Strategy Specifications
Deck Name And Archetype
Survival is a Premodern green-based Survival of the Fittest midrange-combo toolbox deck with blue support for Opposition and Tradewind Rider, graveyard recursion through Genesis and Squee, Goblin Nabob, creature acceleration from Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, and Gaea's Cradle, and high-end creature threats enabled by Natural Order. Main deck count validates as 60 cards, and sideboard count validates as 15 cards.
The registered tags are midrange, combo, toolbox, and graveyard; the duplicate supplied tag string should be normalized to those four labels. The deck is best treated as a hybrid: it can play fair creature-midrange games, assemble soft-lock pressure with Opposition or Tradewind Rider plus expendable creatures, convert creatures into a large threat with Natural Order, and use Survival of the Fittest to turn excess creatures into the exact visible role-player needed.
Stock status is hybrid-stock rather than rogue: Survival of the Fittest, Squee, Goblin Nabob, Genesis, mana creatures, Wall of Roots, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Winter Orb, and Natural Order are recognizable Premodern shells, but the exact mix of Deranged Hermit, Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Ravenous Baloth, Nantuko Vigilante, Sylvan Safekeeper, and sideboard bullets should be piloted as this registered list, not as a generic Survival list.
Legality status is format-intended but should remain engine-validated at runtime. The card pool and deck size are consistent with Premodern construction assumptions, and no card here should be treated as legally available unless the Veles deck parser and rules engine confirm it from the registered 75. Sideboard plans must preserve the exact registered 75: sideboard cards are Blue Elemental Blast, Chill, Gilded Drake, Hydroblast, Masticore, Naturalize, Tormod's Crypt, and Xantid Swarm.
Mana and color concerns are real tactical constraints. The deck is base green with 8 Forest, 3 Gaea's Cradle, 4 Yavimaya Coast, 2 City of Brass, and 3 Island, so early green is mandatory, blue is important for Opposition and Tradewind Rider, and noncreature hands can make Gaea's Cradle weak or unusable. Birds of Paradise is the cleanest color fixer; Wall of Roots, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, and Quirion Ranger mostly support green acceleration and creature count rather than solving all blue requirements.
Role concerns should be decided from visible board state and legal actions, not from archetype autopilot. Survival of the Fittest is the defining engine, but some games require early mana development, Wall of Blossoms stabilization, Winter Orb pressure, or Natural Order before repeated Survival activations. Opposition and Tradewind Rider become stronger when the deck already has multiple creatures and mana-positive board texture; they are weaker when committing them prevents survival against visible pressure.
Opponent information status is unspecified. This guide must assume unknown opposing deck until public information, match labels, sideboarding stage, or Veles matchup context identifies the opponent. Do not infer hidden cards from format stereotypes; use only revealed cards, public zones, logged matchup labels, legal actions, and engine-provided state when selecting mulligans, Survival searches, Natural Order sacrifice lines, Winter Orb timing, combat, and sideboard plans.
Thesis
Survival assembles mana creatures, resilient green bodies, and Survival of the Fittest into a board-driven toolbox engine. The first priority is to create functional green mana and creature count with Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Quirion Ranger, and Gaea's Cradle; the second priority is to convert that board into selection, pressure, or denial through Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, and Winter Orb.
The deck wins by turning expendable creatures into one of three closing structures. It can use Survival of the Fittest to chain Squee, Goblin Nabob and Genesis into repeated creature access, then find Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Ravenous Baloth, Deranged Hermit, Nantuko Vigilante, Sylvan Safekeeper, or Tradewind Rider as the visible game demands. It can use Natural Order to sacrifice a green creature and put a major green threat or stabilizer onto the battlefield. It can also make the opponent's mana and board unusable with Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Winter Orb, and a wide creature base.
Prioritize board texture over abstract card advantage. Survival of the Fittest is strongest when the deck has discardable creatures, green mana, and enough time to turn searches into battlefield impact; Opposition and Tradewind Rider are strongest when multiple creatures are already available; Winter Orb is strongest when the deck can operate through mana creatures, Wall of Roots, Gaea's Cradle, and Quirion Ranger better than the opponent can operate through lands.
Do not pilot this as a pure combo deck that ignores pressure. Natural Order, Survival of the Fittest, and lock pieces are powerful, but the deck often must first block, preserve life total, develop mana, or spend a turn on Wall of Blossoms or Ravenous Baloth before committing. Do not pilot it as a pure control deck either: the list has limited hard removal, so it must eventually turn creature count into a lock, a large threat, or recurring threats.
Respect runtime legality and visible information above all strategic shortcuts. Search choices, Natural Order sacrifice targets, Survival of the Fittest activations, Opposition tap decisions, Tradewind Rider bounces, and Winter Orb timing must be selected from legal Veles actions and current public state, not from assumed hidden cards or generic Premodern heuristics.
Role Package

Threats: Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Deranged Hermit, Ravenous Baloth, Tradewind Rider, and creature swarms from mana creatures or tokens are the main ways to end games. Prefer the threat that changes the visible race immediately: Phantom Nishoba for life-total stabilization, Verdant Force or Deranged Hermit for board volume, Ravenous Baloth for a medium body plus life buffer, and Tradewind Rider when repeated bounce can dominate the board.

Payoffs: Natural Order converts a green creature into a high-impact green creature, while Opposition and Tradewind Rider convert extra creatures into denial. Winter Orb is a payoff for operating on creatures and Gaea's Cradle instead of normal land untaps; deploy it when the visible board suggests the deck can still cast or activate meaningful actions through the restriction.

Engines: Survival of the Fittest is the defining engine because it turns creature cards into the exact creature role needed. Squee, Goblin Nabob supports repeated Survival of the Fittest use, Genesis supports long-game recursion when the graveyard and mana allow it, and Gaea's Cradle can make creature development snowball into multiple actions.

Velocity: Wall of Blossoms replaces itself while adding a creature body, Wall of Roots accelerates while defending, Quirion Ranger can reuse a mana creature or manipulate land and creature resources, and the one-of toolbox creatures make Survival of the Fittest searches tactically dense. Treat velocity as board-building velocity, not spell-chain velocity.

Interaction: Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Winter Orb, Nantuko Vigilante, Ravenous Baloth, and sideboard Naturalize form the practical interaction suite. Recursion: Squee, Goblin Nabob is the repeatable discard resource for Survival of the Fittest, and Genesis is the long-game creature recovery plan. Use recursion to outlast attrition, but do not spend early turns setting it up if visible pressure requires blockers, mana, or a faster Natural Order.

Execute by turning excess creatures into Verdant Force for inevitability, Phantom Nishoba for racing and life stabilization, Deranged Hermit for wide pressure and Opposition fuel, Ravenous Baloth for a stabilizing body, Nantuko Vigilante for artifact or enchantment pressure, Sylvan Safekeeper for protection, or Tradewind Rider for repeat bounce. Disruption to respect includes removal on Survival of the Fittest, graveyard pressure against Squee, Goblin Nabob or Genesis, and tempo pressure that makes repeated activations too slow; if those risks are visible, search for immediate battlefield impact instead of deeper value.

Natural Order threat line: Prioritize Natural Order when sacrificing a green creature produces a threat or stabilizer that is stronger than continuing to develop normally. Set up with expendable green creatures such as Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Quirion Ranger, Wall of Blossoms, Basking Rootwalla, or tokens from Deranged Hermit when available, and avoid sacrificing the only mana creature if the follow-up turn would collapse. Execute by choosing Verdant Force for long-game board dominance, Phantom Nishoba when life total and combat matter, Deranged Hermit when creature count and immediate board width matter, or Ravenous Baloth when a medium body plus life buffer is the safer line. Disruption to respect includes open interaction, sacrifice blowouts if the spell is countered, and board states where the chosen creature does not stabilize; when the opponent is pressuring hard, the best Natural Order line is often the one that changes combat immediately rather than the one with the highest ceiling.

Denial lock line: Prioritize Opposition, Tradewind Rider, and Winter Orb when your visible board has more functional mana and creatures than the opponent. Set up by making multiple cheap creatures, preserving Wall of Roots and mana creatures, and using Gaea's Cradle or Quirion Ranger to operate through constrained lands. Creature pressure: Use Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Quirion Ranger, Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Roots, Basking Rootwalla, Ravenous Baloth, Deranged Hermit, and tokens as real combat resources once the board is stable. Small attacks matter when Opposition or Winter Orb has reduced opposing development, and Deranged Hermit can turn otherwise defensive bodies into a fast clock. Avoid needless attacks with creatures needed for mana, Survival of the Fittest discard chains, Opposition taps, Tradewind Rider costs, or blocking unless the race math clearly favors pressure.

Recursion pressure: Use Genesis and Squee, Goblin Nabob to make attrition games about repeated creature access instead of one-for-one exchanges. Squee, Goblin Nabob is primarily Survival of the Fittest fuel, while Genesis is a recovery engine when the graveyard is available and mana can be spent without losing the board. If graveyard access is blocked or too slow, shift to hard-cast threats, Natural Order, or denial rather than spending turns on a disabled recursion plan.

Toolbox answers as win enablers: Treat Nantuko Vigilante, Ravenous Baloth, Sylvan Safekeeper, and Tradewind Rider as cards that turn survival into victory. Nantuko Vigilante can clear a visible artifact or enchantment problem before a lock or attack line matters, Ravenous Baloth can buy the life needed to untap with an engine, Sylvan Safekeeper can protect a decisive creature when land sacrifice is affordable, and Tradewind Rider can remove blockers or mana sources repeatedly. These are not generic value choices; use them when their specific text or legal action changes the current board.

No burn or creature-land fallback: This list has no direct burn plan and no creature-land plan in the registered decklist. If the game must end without Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, or Tradewind Rider, win by honest combat from Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Deranged Hermit, Ravenous Baloth, tokens, and accumulated small creatures.
Emergency Lines

Behind on life: Stabilize before maximizing engine value. Prefer Wall of Roots and Wall of Blossoms as blockers, Natural Order into Phantom Nishoba or Ravenous Baloth when legal and sufficient, and Survival of the Fittest searches that affect combat immediately. Do not spend life casually with City of Brass or Yavimaya Coast if another legal mana line preserves life without losing the turn.

Behind on board: Add bodies before committing fragile denial pieces. Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Deranged Hermit, Ravenous Baloth, Phantom Nishoba, and Verdant Force are the recovery cards; Opposition and Tradewind Rider become strong only after there are enough creatures to tap or bounce while still blocking. If only one creature is available, be cautious with Natural Order sacrifice unless the resulting creature clearly stabilizes.

Life is a spendable buffer only when the board is stable. City of Brass and Yavimaya Coast can buy perfect colors for Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or sideboard interaction, but repeated pain is dangerous against pressure; choose Forest, Island, Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, or Gaea's Cradle lines when they produce the same legal play without life loss.

Hand size converts into selection through Survival of the Fittest. Discard expendable creatures first when a searched creature immediately changes the game, and treat Squee, Goblin Nabob and Genesis as engines that turn later hand or graveyard access into repeated creature quality. Do not discard the only creature that enables Natural Order, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or survival blocking unless the search is a committed stabilizing line.

Mana converts into board dominance faster than it converts into raw cards. Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Quirion Ranger, and Gaea's Cradle let the deck make threats, activate Survival of the Fittest, and still interact with Opposition or Tradewind Rider. Preserve these permanents when Winter Orb is involved because the deck wins the asymmetry by using creature mana and Gaea's Cradle while opposing lands stay constrained.

Board presence is both offense and fuel. Small creatures are mana, blockers, Opposition taps, Tradewind Rider support, Natural Order sacrifice material, Gaea's Cradle count, and eventual attackers; avoid trading them away for marginal damage unless the race is already favorable or the creature is no longer needed for an engine.

Graveyard resources matter when Genesis or Squee, Goblin Nabob is active. Use the graveyard as a reload zone only when visible graveyard hate is absent or too slow; if Tormod's Crypt or another public effect threatens the graveyard after sideboarding, shift value toward battlefield pressure, Natural Order, and hard-cast threats instead of investing extra actions into recursion.

Exile is usually a lost-resource zone for this deck. If a creature is exiled, stop planning Genesis recursion around it and choose future Survival of the Fittest searches from visible library and hand assumptions only as allowed by the engine.

Lands are resources, not just mana sources. Sylvan Safekeeper can convert lands into protection, but sacrificing lands is expensive under Winter Orb or when blue/green access is thin; use that protection for decisive creatures such as Tradewind Rider, a Natural Order threat, or a board-lock engine, not for replaceable mana creatures.

Sideboard bullets convert narrow matchups into cleaner resource exchanges. Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Chill, Gilded Drake, Masticore, Naturalize, Tormod's Crypt, and Xantid Swarm should be valued by the specific resource they defend or attack: life total, stack fights, creature boards, artifact/enchantment engines, graveyards, or permission windows.
Mana Guide

Green mana is the opening priority. Keep hands that can cast Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Survival of the Fittest, or Natural Order on schedule, and be skeptical of hands where blue exists but green development depends on drawing a source.

Blue mana becomes critical once the hand contains Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or sideboard permission. Birds of Paradise, City of Brass, Yavimaya Coast, and Island are the main blue access points; do not expose the only blue source to unnecessary land sacrifice or tap constraints when a blue engine card is already visible in hand.

Gaea's Cradle is a payoff land, not a safe first-source plan. It becomes excellent after creatures are on the battlefield, especially with Deranged Hermit, Verdant Force, Wall of Roots, and mana creatures, but hands relying on Gaea's Cradle without early creatures should be treated as low-mana hands.

City of Brass and Yavimaya Coast should fix colors for high-impact actions. Spend life for Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Natural Order setup, or timely sideboard cards, but choose pain-free mana when casting routine creatures or when the life total is already under pressure.

Forest sequencing usually comes before Island sequencing. A first Forest enables the elf package and Wall of Roots, while early Island is correct when the hand already has green from Birds of Paradise or Yavimaya Coast and needs to preserve blue for Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Xantid Swarm sequencing.

Quirion Ranger rewards careful land timing. When a legal line can use Quirion Ranger to reuse a mana creature or protect land drops under Winter Orb, consider whether playing the land before activation reduces options; follow the engine's legal actions and avoid assuming a return-land line is available until shown.

Wall of Roots is both acceleration and defense. Prefer it over a fragile one-mana creature when blocking matters, and count its mana contribution carefully before committing to Survival of the Fittest activation plus spell cast in the same turn.

Winter Orb changes land-use priorities. Deploy it only when creature mana, Gaea's Cradle, Quirion Ranger, or an already developed board lets you keep acting; avoid tapping out into Winter Orb if your next turn depends on untapping multiple lands.

Play lands before drawing only when the land drop is needed for a known legal action this turn. If Wall of Blossoms, Survival of the Fittest, or another visible draw/selection action may change the desired land, delay the land drop when legal and tactically safe so the agent can use the new public information.

Mulligan mana rules are strict but engine-aware. Keep most hands with green source plus early creature acceleration or Survival of the Fittest, especially with a path to blue; mulligan hands with no green, no early play, or only Gaea's Cradle as functional mana unless the engine-visible context supplies an exceptional reason.

Strong keep: Forest or Yavimaya Coast plus Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, or Fyndhorn Elves with Survival of the Fittest is the cleanest opener; keep even with modest payoff because Survival of the Fittest converts any creature into the needed creature chain.

Risky keep: Natural Order plus one green creature and no backup is matchup- and board-speed dependent; keep more often on the play with acceleration, and ship more often on the draw into likely removal or pressure unless the hand has Survival of the Fittest or extra creatures.

Automatic ship: no green-producing source, only Gaea's Cradle as mana, no castable early creature, or a hand whose first legal play is turn 3 Winter Orb should be mulliganed because the deck needs board presence before its lock and tutor cards matter.

Matchup-dependent keep: Winter Orb is a premium keep against slower mana-heavy opponents when paired with creature mana, but it is a liability against low-curve creature decks if the hand cannot block, stabilize, or advance Opposition.

Turn Arc

Turn 1 priority: cast Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, or Fyndhorn Elves from Forest, City of Brass, or Yavimaya Coast when legal; acceleration is preferred over holding up nothing because it enables turn 2 Survival of the Fittest, Wall of Roots, Winter Orb setup, or blue engine cards.
