Deck Name And Archetype
Jeskai Ephemerate is a Pauper Jeskai blink-control deck built around cheap interaction, artifact-bridge mana, blue card selection, and enter-the-battlefield value from Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and Murmuring Mystic. The registered list is 60 main-deck cards and 15 sideboard cards by count from the supplied decklist, so Veles should treat the list as structurally valid before separate card-database, legality, and engine-implementation checks.
-
Format: Pauper.
-
Strategy name: Jeskai Ephemerate.
-
Main deck count: 60.
-
Sideboard count: 15.
-
Current tags: midrange, control, blink, artifact.
-
Strategic status: hybrid stock shell with customized interaction; the core of Cleansing Wildfire plus artifact Bridges, Ephemerate value loops, Counterspell, Skred, Brainstorm, Lorien Revealed, and Mulldrifter is recognizable, while the exact mix of Union of the Third Path, Suplex, Ride's End, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, and sideboard blasts should be treated as tuned rather than generic.
-
Legality concern: Veles must not assume Pauper legality from this guide alone; confirm legality and Forge support for every card before official runs, especially newer or less-stock inclusions such as Suplex, Ride's End, Union of the Third Path, and Thraben Charm. If the runtime card database or rules engine rejects a card, the pilot should treat the deck as unavailable rather than substituting a similar effect.
-
Card text concern: The guide should use known strategic roles only when the legal actions expose those roles at runtime. Card text check required for Suplex and Ride's End before relying on exact tactical timing, target restrictions, cost assumptions, or combat applications.
-
Mana concern: The deck is blue-centered with meaningful red and white requirements, so early sequencing should protect access to Counterspell and Brainstorm while still enabling Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, Ride's End, and sideboard blasts. Rustvale Bridge, Silverbluff Bridge, Glacial Floodplain, Volatile Fjord, Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Mountain, and Snow-Covered Plains make the mana functional but tapland-heavy, so the pilot must value early land drops and avoid optional plays that strand Counterspell or Skred when the opponent is presenting pressure.
-
Role concern: The deck is not a pure draw-go control deck; it often wins by surviving the early turns, turning Mulldrifter or Augur of Bolas into repeated cards with Ephemerate, rebuying key spells with Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist, and converting Murmuring Mystic into a threat while holding interaction. The pilot should not spend early turns only sculpting if the board requires Skred, Suplex, Destroy Evil, Ride's End, Thraben Charm, or Counterspell.
-
Artifact concern: Cleansing Wildfire on Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge is a central acceleration and card-flow plan, but the legal action must actually target an indestructible artifact land or other tactically acceptable land. Do not assume Cleansing Wildfire is safe on a nonindestructible land unless the visible state and matchup pressure justify sacrificing that land.
-
Opponent information status: No specific opposing deck is supplied in this batch, so matchup decisions must begin from visible board state, public graveyards, revealed cards, previous match-game information, and broad Pauper archetype inference only. Do not infer hidden cards as certain; use Pyroblast, Hydroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Blue Elemental Blast, Envelop, Dust to Dust, Stonehorn Dignitary, Destroy Evil, and Breath Weapon sideboard roles only when the opponent’s colors, card types, threats, or game plan are confirmed by public information or matchup metadata.
Thesis
Jeskai Ephemerate assembles a tapland-heavy blue control shell that turns cheap interaction and card selection into a long-game engine through Ephemerate, Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and Murmuring Mystic. The deck wins by surviving the first pressure cycle, making land drops, converting Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge plus Cleansing Wildfire into stable mana and extra cards, then taking over with repeated enter-the-battlefield value, protected flyers, and a growing Murmuring Mystic token board.
The pilot should prioritize mana stability, early threat containment, and preserving blue interaction over forcing a fast clock. Counterspell and Skred are the cleanest main-deck answers when the legal actions expose the right target or spell, while Dispel, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, Ride's End, and Union of the Third Path fill narrower defensive windows that must be chosen from the actual rules-engine prompt. Card text check required for Suplex and Ride's End before using them as anything more specific than visible legal interaction.
The deck is not trying to race from turn one, trade cards carelessly, or cast Ephemerate without a meaningful target. Ephemerate should normally be saved for Mulldrifter, Augur of Bolas, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, or a tactically relevant creature protection line when the stack and visible board make the blink legal and useful. Murmuring Mystic changes the role from pure control to board-building midrange; once it is in play, cheap spells can become both interaction and pressure, but the pilot should still respect removal, combat pressure, and mana constraints.
The default priority is survive, hit land drops, keep blue mana online, answer must-answer threats, and build a recurring card engine. When under pressure, choose Skred, Counterspell, Suplex, Ride's End, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, Union of the Third Path, or Breath Weapon-style sideboard interaction before slow value lines unless the visible board shows the value play also stabilizes. When stable, prefer Brainstorm plus shuffle or search-like effects, Lorien Revealed for land development or late cards, Cleansing Wildfire on an indestructible Bridge, and blink-recursion loops that increase cards without exposing the game to a single unanswered threat.
Role Package
-
Threats: Murmuring Mystic is the main board-converting threat because every instant or sorcery after it can add material while the deck continues playing control. Mulldrifter is both a flyer and a card engine; cast or evoke it according to legal actions, mana, and whether Ephemerate or recursion can multiply the card draw. Augur of Bolas is an early body that buys time, finds spells, and becomes a good Ephemerate target when the deck needs selection rather than raw board pressure.
-
Payoffs: Ephemerate is the highest-leverage payoff when it reuses Mulldrifter, Augur of Bolas, Archaeomancer, or Ardent Elementalist, and it can also protect a creature only if the legal blink timing and target are exposed. Cleansing Wildfire is a mana and card-flow payoff when aimed at Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge, but targeting a nonindestructible land is a separate tactical commitment. Murmuring Mystic rewards every Counterspell, Skred, Brainstorm, Dispel, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, Ride's End, Union of the Third Path, Lorien Revealed, and sideboard instant or sorcery that is actually cast.
-
Engines: Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist are recursion engines for rebuying high-impact instants and sorceries, especially Counterspell, Skred, Ephemerate, Cleansing Wildfire, Brainstorm, Lorien Revealed, Dispel, and matchup-specific sideboard spells. Ephemerate plus Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist can create repeated spell access, but the pilot must confirm the exact legal target each time and avoid looping low-impact spells while dying on board.
-
Velocity: Brainstorm is the primary cheap selection spell and should improve hand quality, protect against flood, or set up known cards rather than be fired for no reason. Lorien Revealed supports early mana development when land drops matter and becomes a late card-advantage spell when mana is abundant. Augur of Bolas and Mulldrifter are velocity creatures that should be sequenced around available mana, pressure, and whether holding Counterspell or Skred is more important than tapping out.
-
Interaction: Counterspell is the broad stack answer and should be conserved for threats, engines, combo pieces, or interaction that materially changes the next turn cycle. Skred is the scalable creature answer tied to snow permanent count, so visible damage math matters before selecting a target. Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Dispel, Union of the Third Path, Suplex, and Ride's End are narrower tools whose exact timing, targets, and defensive use must follow legal action text.
-
Protection: Dispel protects key exchanges against opposing instant interaction and can defend Murmuring Mystic, Ephemerate lines, or a counter war when the opposing spell is legal to counter. Ephemerate can protect creatures only when blinking them preserves or improves the board; do not spend it merely because a target exists. Union of the Third Path can support survival if the rules engine presents a life-gain or defensive action that matters before the opponent's next attack.
-
Recursion: Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist should prioritize returning the spell that best answers the current constraint: Counterspell for stack control, Skred or Destroy Evil for board control, Ephemerate for engine continuation, Brainstorm or Lorien Revealed for resources, and sideboard blasts or Envelop when the matchup makes them decisive.
-
Mana: Snow-Covered Island anchors Counterspell, Brainstorm, Lorien Revealed, Augur of Bolas, Murmuring Mystic, and Mulldrifter. Rustvale Bridge, Silverbluff Bridge, Glacial Floodplain, Snow-Covered Mountain, Snow-Covered Plains, and Volatile Fjord provide Jeskai colors but enter tapped often, so early turns should map whether red removal, white blink or removal, and double-blue Counterspell can coexist.
-
Sideboard modules: Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast pressure blue spells and permanents; Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast answer red pressure or red stack fights; Dust to Dust attacks artifact-heavy boards; Envelop fights sorcery-centric plans; Stonehorn Dignitary adds a combat-stop body for blink shells; Destroy Evil increases access to that effect; Breath Weapon is a sweeper role card for small-creature boards.
Primary Win Conditions
-
Murmuring Mystic spell-pressure path: prioritize this win path when the deck has stable mana, enough life to take one attack if needed, and instant or sorcery density in hand. Setup requires resolving Murmuring Mystic with blue interaction or removal available soon after; execution is to cast Counterspell, Skred, Brainstorm, Ephemerate, Cleansing Wildfire, Lorien Revealed, Dispel, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, or Ride's End only when the legal action also advances board control, card flow, or protection. Disruption to respect includes removal on Murmuring Mystic, sweepers for small flyers, and stack fights over the first Mystic; do not expose Mystic into obvious lethal pressure unless it is the only stabilizing body. Prioritize this path against slow decks, blue mirrors where tokens dodge some counters after Mystic resolves, and board stalls where repeated flying tokens end the game while the pilot keeps answering threats.
-
Mulldrifter value-air path: prioritize this win path when cards matter more than immediate board size or when the opponent cannot punish a slower flyer. Setup is hitting enough mana or legal evoke timing, preferably with Ephemerate, Archaeomancer, or Ardent Elementalist available to multiply the card draw. Execution is to turn Mulldrifter into both resource advantage and evasive pressure; a hard-cast Mulldrifter can close games while Counterspell and Skred keep the battlefield contained. Disruption to respect includes exile removal, counterspells on the first draw creature, and graveyard hate that weakens recursion follow-up; if the opponent is racing, cast Mulldrifter only when the visible board and life total allow the tempo loss or when the legal line also finds survival resources.
-
Ephemerate recursion engine: prioritize this win path when Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist can legally return a high-impact spell and the game is expected to go long. Setup is a meaningful graveyard target such as Counterspell, Skred, Ephemerate, Cleansing Wildfire, Brainstorm, Lorien Revealed, Dispel, or a sideboard spell, plus a creature that survives long enough to be blinked. Execution is to use Ephemerate on Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist to rebuy the best current spell, then use rebound or later blink actions only if the rules engine presents them and the target still matters. Disruption to respect includes graveyard exile, removal in response to Ephemerate, and spending mana on a loop while dying to attackers; prioritize this engine when stable, when out-carding control, or when one recurred Counterspell or Skred changes the next turn cycle.
-
Cleansing Wildfire Bridge ramp path: prioritize this win path when Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge is visible and the deck needs mana, colors, or card flow more than holding interaction. Setup is an indestructible Bridge and a hand that can convert extra lands into Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic plus spells, Counterspell backup, or recursion turns. Execution is to target the Bridge only through legal action text, draw the card, improve mana, and reach the late-game engine ahead of schedule. Disruption to respect includes tapping out against a must-counter spell or dying before the ramp pays off; prioritize this line in slower games and when missing land drops, but defer it against fast pressure if Skred, Counterspell, or life stabilization is required first.
Secondary Win Conditions
-
Creature-chip fallback: use Augur of Bolas, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and incidental Murmuring Mystic tokens to attack only when the damage does not sacrifice needed blockers or engine pieces. This line wins when the opponent is empty or constrained, not because the deck is naturally aggressive.
-
Single-threat protection fallback: protect one resolved Mulldrifter or Murmuring Mystic with Counterspell, Dispel, Ephemerate, Skred, and narrow legal interaction when the opponent has few clean answers. Do not spend Ephemerate on a low-impact blink if saving it would protect the only real clock or rebuy a better enters-the-battlefield effect.
-
Sideboard pressure fallback: after sideboarding, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Envelop, Dust to Dust, Stonehorn Dignitary, Destroy Evil, and Breath Weapon can convert specific matchups into easier win paths by answering the axis that normally beats Jeskai Ephemerate. These cards are not generic finishers; they create time for Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, and recursion to finish.
-
No burn-to-face assumption: do not treat Skred, Thraben Charm, Suplex, Ride's End, Destroy Evil, or Breath Weapon as direct lethal unless the rules engine exposes an exact legal damaging action to the opponent. Card text check required for Suplex and Ride's End before assigning them any deterministic finishing role.
Emergency Lines
-
Behind on life: choose survival before value, using Skred, Counterspell, Suplex, Ride's End, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, Union of the Third Path, or sideboard Breath Weapon only when the legal target or mode is visible. Mulldrifter and Cleansing Wildfire should wait unless they find or enable immediate defense.
-
Behind on board: preserve blockers and answer the permanent or spell that changes combat math most before the next attack. Murmuring Mystic can stabilize only if the pilot can cast follow-up spells; Augur of Bolas is expendable as a blocker when it buys the turn needed for Skred, Breath Weapon, Stonehorn Dignitary, or Mulldrifter.
-
Behind on cards: rebuild with Mulldrifter, Brainstorm, Lorien Revealed, Cleansing Wildfire on a Bridge, Augur of Bolas, and recursion, but do not spend a turn drawing cards if a visible threat will end the game first. Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist should return the spell that solves the current bottleneck, not automatically the highest-card-advantage spell.
-
Behind on mana: prioritize land drops, Lorien Revealed land access when legal, and Cleansing Wildfire on Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge when the opponent cannot punish the tap-out. Keep double-blue Counterspell and red Skred requirements in mind before choosing tapped lands or optional spells.
-
Engine removed or graveyard checked: shift to honest control and flyer pressure with Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, Counterspell, Skred, and hard-cast threats. If Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, or Ephemerate lines are shut off, stop forcing recursion and trade resources toward a stable board.
-
Facing combo or a must-answer stack threat: hold Counterspell, Dispel, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, or Envelop for the visible decisive spell rather than spending mana on routine development. Passing with interaction is correct when tapping out would lose to the known or strongly signaled axis.
Resource Model
-
Life: spend life as a buffer only when the next turn cycle is covered by visible blockers, Skred, Counterspell, Union of the Third Path, or sideboard Stonehorn Dignitary/Breath Weapon lines. Against fast boards, convert cards into life and tempo before trying to maximize Mulldrifter, Cleansing Wildfire, or Archaeomancer value.
-
Hand: treat hand size as the deck's main late-game currency, because Brainstorm, Augur of Bolas, Lorien Revealed, Mulldrifter, Cleansing Wildfire, Archaeomancer, and Ardent Elementalist turn extra looks into specific answers. Do not cash in cards for low-impact actions if holding Counterspell, Dispel, Skred, or Ephemerate protects a better future exchange.
-
Mana: convert early mana into land drops, artifact-land ramp, and double-blue protection before chasing expensive turns. The strongest turns often use five or more mana for Mulldrifter plus interaction, Murmuring Mystic plus a spell, or Archaeomancer/Ardent Elementalist plus Ephemerate.
-
Board: stabilize with Augur of Bolas, Skred, Suplex, Ride's End, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, and expendable tokens before attacking. Card text check required for Suplex and Ride's End, so use their tactical role only when the rules engine exposes a legal target and the action label confirms the relevant effect.
-
Graveyard: treat the graveyard as a toolbox for Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist, not as a guaranteed loop. Rebuy the spell that solves the visible bottleneck: Counterspell for stack control, Skred or Destroy Evil for a threat, Ephemerate for engine continuity, Cleansing Wildfire or Lorien Revealed for mana/cards, or Dispel after sideboard-style stack fights.
-
Exile: respect exile as a real cost when Ephemerate rebounds or when effects move resources out of recursion range. Do not plan to recur a spell or creature unless the visible zone state still contains it and the legal action list exposes the line.
-
Lands: Rustvale Bridge and Silverbluff Bridge are both mana sources and Cleansing Wildfire targets, so preserve at least one indestructible Bridge when a ramp/draw line matters. Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Mountain, Snow-Covered Plains, Glacial Floodplain, and Volatile Fjord also increase Skred count or color access when visible, so avoid sacrificing sequencing quality for a marginal tapland unless the next spell still works.
-
Sacrifice fodder: do not assume dedicated sacrifice value; this list has no primary sacrifice engine. Treat Murmuring Mystic tokens and small creatures as blockers, pressure, or expendable material only when a legal card effect specifically asks for a sacrifice or combat trade.
-
Tempo: spend tempo defensively when behind and greedily when stable. Cleansing Wildfire, hard-cast Mulldrifter, and recursion turns are excellent when the opponent cannot punish the tap-out; against pressure, prioritize cheap interaction, blockers, and Union of the Third Path.
-
Information: use revealed cards, public graveyards, visible mana, and prior game history to assign Counterspell, Dispel, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Envelop, Dust to Dust, Destroy Evil, Breath Weapon, and Stonehorn Dignitary to the right axis. Do not infer hidden exact cards beyond archetype-level risk.
-
Sideboard bullets: convert narrow sideboard cards into time, permission, or permanent answers only in the matchups where their legal targets are visible or strongly expected. Avoid boarding or casting bullets as generic value spells when they do not answer the opponent's main pressure.
Mana Guide
-
Keep rules: keep hands that can cast early blue spells and reach interaction, usually with at least two lands or one land plus Lorien Revealed access when the legal format supports it. Mulligan hands that cannot produce blue early, cannot reach red for Skred/Cleansing Wildfire when those cards are needed, or rely on too many tapped lands against a fast matchup.
-
Color priority: prioritize blue first for Brainstorm, Augur of Bolas, Counterspell, Dispel, Lorien Revealed, Mulldrifter, and Murmuring Mystic. Prioritize red next for Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Breath Weapon, and some removal lines. Prioritize white when the hand needs Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Dust to Dust, or Stonehorn Dignitary.
-
Double-blue planning: sequence lands so Counterspell becomes available as soon as the game demands it. A tapped red-white source may be correct on turn one, but do not lock yourself out of double blue on the decisive turn if Counterspell is the hand's only answer.
-
Bridge sequencing: play Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge early when Cleansing Wildfire is in hand and the opponent is not presenting a must-answer opening. If holding Counterspell or Dispel for a known critical turn, choose untapped or blue-producing sequencing over a greedy Bridge ramp line.
-
Cleansing Wildfire targets: target your own Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge only when the legal action text confirms that target and the turn can afford the mana. The preferred payoff is an extra land plus a card toward Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, Counterspell backup, or recursion.
-
Snow mana: count visible snow permanents before valuing Skred as removal. Snow-Covered Island is the cleanest early land because it improves blue density and Skred; Snow-Covered Mountain and Snow-Covered Plains matter when red or white actions are immediate.
-
Tapland discipline: account for Glacial Floodplain, Volatile Fjord, Rustvale Bridge, and Silverbluff Bridge entering tapped if the rules engine shows that constraint. Against pressure, a turn spent on a tapped land must still leave a playable next-turn defense.
-
Brainstorm timing: cast Brainstorm before the land drop when you need to find a land, a specific color, or a Bridge/Cleansing Wildfire setup. Cast Brainstorm after the land drop when the land decision is already clear and you want to preserve hidden draw information or protect against forced shuffle assumptions.
-
Lorien Revealed timing: use Lorien Revealed as mana access when missing land drops or colors, and as a card-advantage spell only when mana is already stable. Do not hold it as a late spell if doing so strands Counterspell, Skred, Ephemerate, or Union of the Third Path in hand.
-
Play-land-before-draw: play land before drawing when you must hold up Counterspell, Dispel, Skred, or a sideboard blast this turn and the current land is clearly required. Delay the land until after Brainstorm, Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Cleansing Wildfire draw, or Lorien Revealed selection when color needs are unsettled.
-
Optional payments and value turns: pay optional costs or choose expensive lines only after preserving mana for visible stack threats, removal windows, and survival. Ephemerate, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and Mulldrifter value is strongest when the remaining mana still covers the opponent's next meaningful action.
Mulligan Guide
-
Strong keep: keep two or three lands with early blue, one stabilizer, and one card-flow engine, such as Snow-Covered Island, Silverbluff Bridge, Rustvale Bridge, Brainstorm, Skred, Counterspell, and Augur of Bolas. This hand casts spells on time, grows Skred, enables Cleansing Wildfire if drawn, and does not need a fragile Ephemerate setup to function.
-
Strong keep: keep Bridge plus Cleansing Wildfire plus blue access when the opponent is not presenting immediate lethal pressure. Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge into Cleansing Wildfire gives mana and cards for Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, and Counterspell turns, but it is slower on the draw against aggressive starts.
-
Medium keep: keep one land plus Lorien Revealed only when that land produces blue or the matchup is slow enough to spend the early turn fixing. The hand improves if it also has Brainstorm, Skred, or Augur of Bolas; ship it if missing blue and relying on multiple tapped lands.
-
Medium keep: keep Augur of Bolas plus Ephemerate only when the hand already has functional mana and at least one relevant instant or sorcery to find. Do not keep a hand that needs Augur of Bolas to hit perfectly before it can play Magic.
-
Risky keep: keep Counterspell-heavy hands only when double blue is realistic by turn two or three and the matchup revolves around stack fights. A hand with Counterspell, Dispel, and no early board plan can lose to creatures already resolved.
-
Risky keep: keep Mulldrifter or Murmuring Mystic hands only when early lands and interaction are present. These cards are payoff, not early defense, and hands full of five-mana value without Skred, Suplex, Ride's End, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, Augur of Bolas, or Union of the Third Path are too slow.
-
Automatic ship: ship zero-land hands, one-land hands without Lorien Revealed or Brainstorm support, hands without blue mana access, and hands that cannot cast any spell before turn three. Ship hands with only tapped lands and no cheap interaction against fast decks.
-
Matchup-dependent keep: keep removal-dense hands with Skred, Suplex, Ride's End, Destroy Evil, or Thraben Charm against creature decks if colors work. Card text check required for Suplex and Ride's End, so count them as keep reasons only when the rules engine confirms their legal tactical role in the matchup.
-
Play/draw rule: on the play, prefer mana development and Counterspell readiness over speculative value; on the draw, value cheap removal, Augur of Bolas, and Union of the Third Path more because the opponent acts first. Against known control, tolerate slower Lorien Revealed, Mulldrifter, and Murmuring Mystic hands with Counterspell or Dispel.
-
Trap hand: do not keep Ephemerate, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and Mulldrifter with weak mana and no early interaction. The deck wins with value loops, but mulligans should first produce lands, colors, and live answers.
Turn Arc
-
Turn 1 priority: establish blue mana or the best tapped land for the next two turns. Prefer Snow-Covered Island when holding Brainstorm, Augur of Bolas, Counterspell, or Lorien Revealed; prefer Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge when Cleansing Wildfire is in hand and the matchup gives time.
-
Turn 1 deviation: cast Brainstorm before the land drop only when searching for land, color, or a missing early answer. Hold Brainstorm if the hand already curves and you can use later information from Augur of Bolas, Cleansing Wildfire, or opposing plays.
-
Turn 2 priority: cast Augur of Bolas, hold Counterspell, cast Skred, or set up Cleansing Wildfire based on the visible threat. Against pressure, answer the board or block; against slow starts, develop Bridge plus Cleansing Wildfire or leave up Counterspell if the opponent's next spell matters.
-
Turn 2 deviation: hold Dispel only for matchups where a visible or strongly expected instant matters this turn. Do not pass with Dispel as your only action against creature pressure if Augur of Bolas, Skred, or a legal removal action improves survival.
-
Turn 3 priority: convert setup into either mana advantage, stack control, or board stabilization. Cleansing Wildfire on Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge is preferred when safe; Counterspell is preferred when the opponent's critical spell is likely; Augur of Bolas plus cheap interaction is preferred when behind.
-
Turn 3 deviation: cast Ephemerate only when the target produces immediate value or protection from a visible interaction point. Blink Augur of Bolas for selection, Mulldrifter for cards, Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist for a needed spell, or Stonehorn Dignitary after sideboard when the combat step must be stopped.
-
Turns 4-5 priority: land Murmuring Mystic or Mulldrifter when you can survive the opponent's next turn cycle. Prefer Murmuring Mystic with cheap spells available to create blockers; prefer Mulldrifter when cards are needed and the board is not collapsing.
-
Turns 4-5 deviation: stay defensive when the opponent has a wide board, open stack interaction, or a must-answer permanent. Use Skred, Suplex, Ride's End, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, Counterspell, Dispel, and Union of the Third Path before tapping out for slow value.
-
Late-game priority: turn recursion into the exact spell that answers the current bottleneck. Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist should rebuy Counterspell for stack control, Ephemerate for engine continuity, Skred or Destroy Evil for threats, Cleansing Wildfire or Lorien Revealed for cards/mana, or Dispel for instant-speed fights.
-
Late-game deviation: attack only when tokens or creatures can pressure without giving up necessary blockers or blink targets. The default late game is to lock resources with Counterspell, Ephemerate loops, Mulldrifter cards, and Murmuring Mystic tokens, then win once the opponent's board and stack options are contained.
Card Roles
-
Augur of Bolas is the early stabilizer, spell finder, and Ephemerate target that lets the deck interact while hitting land drops. Cast it early against pressure, blink it when a specific instant or sorcery matters, and do not expose it as a low-value blink target when the hand already has the needed answer.
-
Mulldrifter is the main card-advantage creature and a premium Ephemerate target. Evoke it when survival, land drops, or finding interaction matters now; hard-cast it when the board is stable enough that a 2/2 flyer can pressure or block while drawing cards. Avoid saving Mulldrifter forever for a perfect blink line if drawing two immediately prevents falling behind.
-
Archaeomancer is a late-game recursion bridge, not a generic four-drop. Use it to rebuy the exact spell that changes the next turn cycle: Counterspell for stack control, Ephemerate for a loop, Skred or Destroy Evil for a threat, Cleansing Wildfire or Lorien Revealed for resources, or Dispel for an instant fight. Blink it only when the graveyard contains a spell worth spending the blink on.
-
Ardent Elementalist fills the second recursion role and should be treated like Archaeomancer with slightly more redundancy pressure. Its best job is turning Ephemerate into repeated spell access, but it is still correct to take a single important Counterspell, Skred, or Cleansing Wildfire when the board state demands action. Do not cast it into an empty or low-value graveyard unless a body is urgently required.
-
Murmuring Mystic is the primary board engine and stabilizing finisher. Cast it when you can either untap with spells, immediately create tokens, or protect the life total from flyers and small attackers. Against removal-heavy or counter-heavy decks, prefer waiting until Counterspell, Dispel, or Pyroblast-style post-board help is available; against creature decks, a timely Mystic plus cheap spells can matter more than holding up perfect stack control.
-
Counterspell is the clean answer to cards that cannot be profitably answered on board. Hold it for engines, payoff creatures, lethal burn, monarch/initiative-style snowball cards, large draw spells, combo pieces, or removal aimed at a critical Murmuring Mystic or recursion engine. Do not counter a minor threat merely because mana is open if Skred, Suplex, Ride's End, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, tokens, or life gain can handle it later.
-
Dispel is narrow protection and stack interaction, so its value depends on visible mana, matchup, and legal instant targets. Prioritize it in fights over Counterspell, removal, burn, opposing card draw, or removal pointed at Murmuring Mystic, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, or Ardent Elementalist. Do not hold a turn open for Dispel alone when the opponent is winning through resolved creatures or permanents.
-
Ephemerate is both protection and value, and the rebound trigger makes timing more important than raw greed. Use it on Augur of Bolas for selection, Mulldrifter for cards, Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist for recursion, and post-board Stonehorn Dignitary when combat prevention is the plan. Avoid blinking without a clear target outcome, and respect that rebound can be stranded if the target dies or the next upkeep has no useful creature.
-
Skred is the efficient creature removal spell whose damage depends on visible snow permanents. Count Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Mountain, Snow-Covered Plains, Glacial Floodplain, and Volatile Fjord before assuming it kills a creature; Rustvale Bridge and Silverbluff Bridge support mana but do not increase Skred unless the engine says otherwise. Use early Skred to protect life total, and save high-count Skred for larger creatures when smaller threats are manageable.
-
Union of the Third Path is the life-buffer and card-flow spell that helps the deck survive burn and racing pressure. Cast it when the life gain changes the opponent's clock, when drawing a card while leaving interaction up is valuable, or when hand size makes the gain meaningful. Do not treat it as a replacement for answering a lethal board unless the rules engine shows life gain alone survives the next attack or burn window.
-
Cleansing Wildfire is the mana-development cantrip, usually strongest on your own Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge because those lands resist destruction while still enabling the search-and-draw line if the rules engine confirms the legal result. Cast it early when time permits, especially to set up double blue and five mana, but avoid tapping out for it when a must-counter spell or lethal attacker is already the problem. Against mana-light opponents, targeting opposing lands is matchup- and rules-text-dependent and should not override the normal Bridge ramp plan without a concrete reason.
-
Lorien Revealed is both early blue fixing through Islandcycling and late-game card advantage. Use Islandcycling aggressively in opening hands that need Snow-Covered Island, Glacial Floodplain, or Volatile Fjord access, especially when Counterspell, Brainstorm, Augur of Bolas, or Skred sequencing depends on land quality. Cast Lorien Revealed as a draw spell only when five mana is available without dying or giving up a critical interaction window.
-
Brainstorm is card selection, land smoothing, and a way to hide or reset bad draws before shuffle effects. Cast it early when searching for lands, colors, or immediate interaction; hold it when the hand already functions and Cleansing Wildfire, Lorien Revealed Islandcycling, or other shuffle effects can improve the card quality later. Avoid firing Brainstorm with no plan and then locking two weak cards on top when the game requires fresh answers.
-
Thraben Charm is a flexible one-of interaction spell, but exact mode use must follow the legal actions the engine exposes. Card text check required for exact mode details if the prompt is ambiguous. Treat it as a tactical answer when it can remove a relevant creature, interact with graveyard-dependent plans, or answer a board object the main removal cannot, and do not spend it on a low-impact target while a known graveyard or creature threat is pending.
-
Destroy Evil is a targeted answer for specific permanent or creature classes, so it should be saved for threats that Skred cannot cleanly answer or that must be removed at instant speed. Card text check required for exact legal target classes in the current engine prompt. Use it over Counterspell when the threat has already resolved and over Skred when Skred count is too low or the target type makes Destroy Evil cleaner.
-
Suplex is a two-copy removal or tempo card whose exact tactical scope depends on current Oracle text and engine prompts. Card text check required. Count it as a keep and sequencing reason only when the visible legal actions show it can answer the relevant creature or combat state; do not assume it kills, bounces, taps, or fights a target unless the rules engine exposes that action.
-
Ride's End is a one-of interaction spell whose exact target limits and effect must be confirmed at runtime. Card text check required. Use it as a situational answer when the legal action text clearly addresses the current threat, and avoid routing strategy around it in hidden-information planning because it is a singleton with uncertain scope.
-
Rustvale Bridge and Silverbluff Bridge are fixing, artifact-land infrastructure, and Cleansing Wildfire targets. Lead with them when the hand has Cleansing Wildfire and time, but remember tapped lands can cost Counterspell or Skred timing. Their main tactical value is making later turns larger, not proving that an early turn can be safely skipped.
-
Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Mountain, Snow-Covered Plains, Glacial Floodplain, and Volatile Fjord define color access and Skred size. Prioritize blue early, red when Skred or Cleansing Wildfire is needed, and white when Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, or sideboard Stonehorn Dignitary matters. Preserve enough snow permanents for Skred math when choosing between a basic, Bridge, or cyclable/fetchable Island source.
Card Hover Notes
Augur of Bolas
- Deck role: main deck, 3 copies, core early stabilizer and spell-selection body.
- Role type: card selection; role glue; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: blocks early attackers while looking at the top three cards for an instant or sorcery such as Counterspell, Ephemerate, Skred, Union of the Third Path, Cleansing Wildfire, Lorien Revealed, Thraben Charm, Dispel, Destroy Evil, Suplex, Brainstorm, or Ride's End.
- Timing: cast early when a blocker or missing interaction matters; delay only when holding Counterspell, Dispel, Skred, or Ephemerate covers a decisive immediate window.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U}; outputs a 1/3 body and may put one revealed instant or sorcery into hand, with the rest placed on the bottom in any order.
- Partners / packages: Ephemerate turns Augur of Bolas into repeated selection; Brainstorm can set up known top cards; Murmuring Mystic rewards the spells Augur finds.
- Role peers: closest role overlap is Brainstorm for selection and Mulldrifter for cards, but Augur of Bolas uniquely adds an early blocker.
- Failure modes: missing on the top three is possible because creatures and lands are not legal hits; blinking Augur without needing a spell can waste Ephemerate.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: stronger against aggro and tempo where a 1/3 body buys time; weaker when the opponent's key threat must be countered immediately on turn two.
Mulldrifter
- Deck role: main deck, 3 copies, core card-advantage threat and premium blink target.
- Role type: engine payoff; threat/clock; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: draws two cards on entry, becomes a 2/2 flying clock when hard-cast, and is the best Ephemerate target when the game is about resources.
- Timing: evoke for {2}{U} when two cards now are worth more than the body; hard-cast for {4}{U} when a flyer can block, pressure, or survive with interaction up.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes five mana for a body or three mana via evoke; outputs two cards and possibly a flying creature. Evoke sacrifices it when it enters unless Ephemerate blinks it before the sacrifice resolves.
- Mode map: hard-cast Mulldrifter when board presence matters; evoke Mulldrifter when digging for Counterspell, Skred, land drops, Ephemerate, or Union of the Third Path is urgent; evoke is a mistake if losing the body exposes you to flyers or if open opposing mana makes Ephemerate too risky.
- Partners / packages: Ephemerate can save evoked Mulldrifter and draw four total cards across entry triggers; Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist can return Ephemerate to repeat the engine.
- Role peers: closest role overlap is Lorien Revealed for raw cards and Murmuring Mystic for a flying-board win path.
- Failure modes: tapping out for Mulldrifter can lose to a must-counter spell or lethal attack; saving it forever for perfect Ephemerate value can strand needed cards.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against removal-heavy and control decks; against burn or swarm decks, cast only when the draw or body changes survival before the next turn cycle.
Archaeomancer
- Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton recursion engine.
- Role type: recursion; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: returns target instant or sorcery from your graveyard to hand, usually Counterspell, Ephemerate, Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Brainstorm, Lorien Revealed, Dispel, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, or Ride's End.
- Timing: cast when the graveyard has a spell that changes the next turn cycle; do not spend four mana for a low-impact body unless blocking is the only survival line.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}{U}; outputs a 1/2 body and one selected instant or sorcery from graveyard to hand.
- Partners / packages: Ephemerate can rebuy Archaeomancer to chain key spells; Ardent Elementalist provides the red redundant recursion body.
- Role peers: Ardent Elementalist is the direct peer, with a different mana cost and a 2/1 body.
- Failure modes: graveyard hate can remove the intended target; returning Brainstorm or Cleansing Wildfire is poor when the board needs Skred, Counterspell, Destroy Evil, Suplex, or Ride's End.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest in slow games, counter wars, and removal exchanges; weaker against fast boards where four mana must answer attackers immediately.
Murmuring Mystic
- Deck role: main deck, 2 copies, core battlefield engine and primary closer.
- Role type: engine payoff; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: converts each cast instant or sorcery into a 1/1 blue Bird Illusion creature token with flying while the deck continues playing Counterspell, Skred, Brainstorm, Ephemerate, Cleansing Wildfire, Lorien Revealed, Dispel, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, and Ride's End.
- Timing: cast when you can untap with spells, immediately cast a follow-up spell, or protect it with Counterspell or Dispel; wait if tapping out lets a visible threat resolve or attack for lethal.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{U}; outputs a 1/5 body and flying tokens from later instant or sorcery casts.
- Partners / packages: cheap spells that immediately trigger it include Brainstorm, Skred, Ephemerate, Dispel, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, and Counterspell.
- Role peers: Mulldrifter is the closest flying win condition, but Murmuring Mystic scales with spell volume instead of drawing cards directly.
- Failure modes: casting Mystic into removal without value can lose tempo; using spells just to make Birds while ignoring decisive targets can still lose the game.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in board stalls and control mirrors after protection is available; against go-wide decks, ensure the first Bird arrives soon enough to affect combat.
Counterspell
- Deck role: main deck, 4 copies, core broad stack interaction.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: counters target spell on the stack, covering threats or engines that Skred, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, Ride's End, or Dust to Dust cannot answer once resolved.
- Timing: hold for decisive spells, protected removal aimed at Murmuring Mystic or Mulldrifter, lethal burn, major card draw, combo pieces, or snowball permanents; spend earlier only when waiting risks an irreversible board or resource loss.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}{U}; trades for one target spell on the stack and preserves battlefield or life-total stability.
- Partners / packages: Dispel protects counter wars involving instants; Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, and Envelop after sideboard let Counterspell stay reserved for broader threats.
- Role peers: Dispel counters only target instant spell; Envelop counters only target sorcery spell; Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Blue Elemental Blast are color-restricted.
- Failure modes: cannot answer resolved permanents; double-blue mana from Snow-Covered Island, Silverbluff Bridge, Glacial Floodplain, and Volatile Fjord must be planned before the key turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: premium against combo, control, big mana, and protection-heavy threats; weaker against low-curve creature swarms already on board.
Ephemerate
- Deck role: main deck, 3 copies, core blink engine and protection spell.
- Role type: engine piece; protection/evasion; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: exiles target creature you control, returns it under its owner's control, and rebounds when cast from hand, multiplying Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and Stonehorn Dignitary after sideboard.
- Timing: cast in response to removal, during end step for value, or on an evoke Mulldrifter before the sacrifice trigger resolves; save it when no target produces cards, recursion, protection, or combat prevention.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {W}; outputs a fresh enters-the-battlefield trigger and, if cast from hand, a next-upkeep rebound cast from exile without paying mana.
- Mode map: first cast from hand targets a creature you control now; rebound at your next upkeep may cast Ephemerate from exile, but only if a useful legal target exists. Rebound is poor when the only target is low impact or blinking removes a needed blocker at the wrong time.
- Partners / packages: best targets are Mulldrifter, Augur of Bolas, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and sideboard Stonehorn Dignitary.
- Role peers: no direct peer; closest role overlap is Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist as ways to extend spell value.
- Failure modes: cannot target opponent creatures or your noncreature permanents; graveyard recursion plans fail if Ephemerate is exiled by rebound and not returned by Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest against removal and midrange; against aggro, use it only if the blinked body or trigger changes combat or survival.
Skred
- Deck role: main deck, 3 copies, core scalable creature removal.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: deals damage to target creature equal to the number of snow permanents you control, using Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Mountain, Snow-Covered Plains, Glacial Floodplain, and Volatile Fjord as the deck's snow count.
- Timing: cast early to stop repeated damage or save it for larger creatures if blockers and life total cover smaller threats; use before combat damage when killing a creature changes attacks or blocks.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {R}; outputs creature damage based on visible snow permanents, not artifact Bridges.
- Partners / packages: Brainstorm and Lorien Revealed help find snow lands; Cleansing Wildfire can find Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Mountain, or Snow-Covered Plains if the controller searches for a basic land.
- Role peers: Suplex deals fixed 3 damage to a creature at sorcery speed; Thraben Charm scales with creatures you control; Destroy Evil and Ride's End use target restrictions rather than damage.
- Failure modes: cannot target players, planeswalkers, artifacts, enchantments, or spells on the stack; damage may fail to kill high-toughness creatures if snow count is low.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against creature tempo and aggro; weaker against noncreature combo, artifact engines without creature targets, and large threats beyond current snow count.
Union of the Third Path
- Deck role: main deck, 2 copies, role-player life buffer and instant-speed card flow.
- Role type: lifegain/stabilization; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: draws a card, then gains life equal to the number of cards in your hand, helping bridge from early pressure to Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, and recursion turns.
- Timing: cast when the life gain changes the opponent's combat or burn clock; avoid spending three mana if Counterspell, Skred, Dispel, or a removal spell must answer the real threat.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{W}; outputs one drawn card and life tied to post-draw hand size.
- Partners / packages: Brainstorm, Mulldrifter, Lorien Revealed, Cleansing Wildfire, Augur of Bolas, Archaeomancer, and Ardent Elementalist keep hand size high enough for meaningful gain.
- Role peers: closest role overlap is Mulldrifter and Lorien Revealed for cards, but Union of the Third Path uniquely converts hand size into life.
- Failure modes: drawing one card does not answer a lethal board by itself; low hand size makes the life gain too small for a three-mana defensive turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: high priority against burn and racing creature decks; low priority against combo unless life total is the combo axis.
Cleansing Wildfire
- Deck role: main deck, 4 copies, core Bridge ramp and cantrip engine.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: destroys target land, lets that land's controller search for a basic land card onto the battlefield tapped, then draws a card; the default deck plan is targeting your own Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge because they are indestructible.
- Timing: cast on a Bridge when the turn can afford sorcery-speed development; defer when holding Counterspell, Skred, Dispel, or white interaction is required for the opponent's next action.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{R}; outputs a card draw and, if targeting your own land, a tapped basic search option for Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Mountain, or Snow-Covered Plains.
- Partners / packages: Rustvale Bridge and Silverbluff Bridge are preferred targets; Brainstorm appreciates the shuffle from the land search; Mulldrifter and Murmuring Mystic benefit from accelerated mana.
- Role peers: Lorien Revealed is the other early land-access card, but it searches an Island card by cycling rather than destroying a land and drawing.
- Failure modes: targeting your own nonindestructible land sacrifices real mana; targeting an opponent land may give them the basic they need unless mana denial is clearly worth it.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in slow games and artifact-land mirrors; risky against fast starts where two mana must remove or counter a threat.
Lorien Revealed
- Deck role: main deck, 4 copies, core early Island access and late card-advantage spell.
- Role type: tutor/search; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: either draws three cards for {3}{U}{U} or Islandcycles for {1} to find a registered Island card: Snow-Covered Island, Glacial Floodplain, or Volatile Fjord.
- Timing: Islandcycle early when missing blue, a land drop, or Brainstorm shuffle value; hard-cast only when five mana is available and shields are not needed for Counterspell, Skred, Dispel, or Ephemerate.
- Inputs / outputs: hard-cast consumes five mana and outputs three drawn cards; Islandcycling consumes {1}, discards Lorien Revealed, searches for an Island card, reveals it, puts it into hand, then shuffles.
- Mode map: Draw-three mode is late-game card advantage. Islandcycling pays {1}, discards Lorien Revealed, searches for Snow-Covered Island, Glacial Floodplain, or Volatile Fjord, reveals the chosen Island card, puts it into hand, then shuffles; Islandcycling does not draw a card. Cycling is a mistake when you can safely cast it soon for three cards; hard-casting is a mistake when missing land or color now.
- Partners / packages: finds Snow-Covered Island for blue and snow count, Glacial Floodplain for white-blue and snow count, or Volatile Fjord for blue-red and snow count; pairs with Brainstorm by shuffling away unwanted top cards.
- Role peers: Cleansing Wildfire also improves mana and cards, but uses red mana and a target land.
- Failure modes: Islandcycling cannot find Rustvale Bridge, Silverbluff Bridge, Snow-Covered Mountain, or Snow-Covered Plains; hard-casting at sorcery speed can lose to pressure.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent in control and big-mana games; against aggro, cycle if land access enables immediate Skred, Augur of Bolas, Counterspell, or Union of the Third Path.
Snow-Covered Island
- Deck role: main deck, 6 copies, core basic snow blue mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: supplies {U}, increases Skred damage as a snow permanent, and is the cleanest Lorien Revealed Islandcycling target when the deck needs untapped blue on a future turn.
- Timing: prioritize early when Brainstorm, Augur of Bolas, Counterspell, Dispel, Lorien Revealed, Mulldrifter, or Murmuring Mystic is in hand; choose other colors only when red or white interaction is urgent.
- Inputs / outputs: taps for {U}; outputs snow count for Skred while staying safe from artifact hate.
- Partners / packages: Counterspell needs two blue sources; Skred counts Snow-Covered Island; Lorien Revealed can search it.
- Role peers: Glacial Floodplain and Volatile Fjord also have Island type and snow count but enter tapped; Silverbluff Bridge makes blue-red but is not snow.
- Failure modes: does not cast Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, Ride's End, Dust to Dust, or red/white blasts by itself.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest when stack interaction matters early; against fast decks, it enables untapped Brainstorm, Dispel, and Counterspell planning better than tapped duals.
Rustvale Bridge
- Deck role: main deck, 4 copies, core artifact-land fixing and Cleansing Wildfire target.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: enters tapped, is indestructible, taps for {R} or {W}, and lets Cleansing Wildfire draw a card and search a basic without actually destroying the Bridge.
- Timing: play early when the hand has Cleansing Wildfire or needs red-white access later; avoid if the tapped land prevents immediate Counterspell, Skred, Brainstorm, or Dispel timing.
- Inputs / outputs: outputs red or white mana after entering tapped; adds artifact count for opposing artifact interactions but not snow count for Skred.
- Partners / packages: Cleansing Wildfire is the main partner; red spells needing Rustvale Bridge include Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Suplex, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Breath Weapon; white spells include Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Ride's End, Dust to Dust, and Stonehorn Dignitary.
- Role peers: Silverbluff Bridge is the other indestructible Bridge target but produces {U} or {R}.
- Failure modes: entering tapped can cost early interaction; artifact hate such as Dust to Dust from an opponent can exile it despite indestructible.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: high value in slow games and when red-white access matters; against fast aggro, count the tempo cost before keeping Bridge-heavy hands.
Silverbluff Bridge
- Deck role: main deck, 4 copies, core artifact-land fixing and Cleansing Wildfire target.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: enters tapped, is indestructible, taps for {U} or {R}, and supports both blue interaction and red removal while being a preferred Cleansing Wildfire target.
- Timing: play early when setting up Counterspell plus Skred or Cleansing Wildfire; avoid when a tapped land prevents an untapped Snow-Covered Island or Snow-Covered Mountain line needed this turn.
- Inputs / outputs: outputs blue or red mana after entering tapped; provides artifact-land infrastructure but not snow count.
- Partners / packages: Cleansing Wildfire turns it into mana development and a card; Counterspell, Brainstorm, Dispel, Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Suplex, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Breath Weapon all use its colors.
- Role peers: Rustvale Bridge is the other indestructible Bridge target but supplies red-white instead of blue-red.
- Failure modes: cannot produce white for Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Ride's End, Dust to Dust, or Stonehorn Dignitary; tapped entry can strand one-mana interaction.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against control when early blue-red fixing matters; vulnerable to artifact-exile effects despite indestructible.
Glacial Floodplain
- Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton snow dual and Islandcycling target.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: enters tapped, taps for {W} or {U}, counts as a snow permanent for Skred, and is searchable by Lorien Revealed because it is a Plains Island.
- Timing: choose when white-blue access and snow count matter more than immediate untapped mana; avoid as a turn where tapped entry prevents Counterspell, Dispel, Skred, or Brainstorm.
- Inputs / outputs: outputs white or blue mana after entering tapped; adds one snow permanent for Skred.
- Partners / packages: Lorien Revealed can find it; Skred counts it; white spells enabled include Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Ride's End, Dust to Dust, and Stonehorn Dignitary.
- Role peers: Volatile Fjord is the other singleton tapped snow Island dual, but it supplies blue-red.
- Failure modes: tapped entry is a real tempo cost; cannot produce red for Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Suplex, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, or Breath Weapon.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: useful in long games where white interaction plus Counterspell mana must coexist; risky as the only early land against aggressive starts.
Snow-Covered Mountain
- Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton basic snow red mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: supplies {R}, increases Skred damage, and is a basic land Cleansing Wildfire can find when red access is missing.
- Timing: fetch or play when Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Suplex, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, or Breath Weapon must be enabled; prioritize blue first if Counterspell or Brainstorm is the current bottleneck.
- Inputs / outputs: taps for {R}; outputs snow count for Skred.
- Partners / packages: Skred both uses red mana and counts Snow-Covered Mountain; Cleansing Wildfire can search it as a basic.
- Role peers: Volatile Fjord and Silverbluff Bridge also supply red, but Volatile Fjord enters tapped and Silverbluff Bridge is not snow.
- Failure modes: Does not help cast Counterspell, Brainstorm, Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Ride's End, Dust to Dust, or Stonehorn Dignitary by itself; singleton status means careless sequencing can strand later Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Breath Weapon, or Suplex.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Especially important against creature decks where Skred must be live and against post-board blue matchups where Pyroblast or Red Elemental Blast needs red mana.
Snow-Covered Plains
- Deck role: main deck, 2 copies, basic snow white mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: supplies {W}, increases Skred damage, and is a Cleansing Wildfire basic target for Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Ride's End, Dust to Dust, and Stonehorn Dignitary.
- Timing: find or play when white interaction or Ephemerate is needed; delay only if early blue or red interaction is more urgent.
- Inputs / outputs: taps for {W}; outputs snow count for Skred.
- Partners / packages: Ephemerate and Union of the Third Path are the main white stabilizing spells; Dust to Dust requires {1}{W}{W} after sideboard.
- Role peers: Glacial Floodplain and Rustvale Bridge also supply white, but Glacial Floodplain enters tapped and Rustvale Bridge is not snow.
- Failure modes: cannot cast Counterspell, Brainstorm, Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Dispel, Suplex, or blasts by itself.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: high value against aggro and artifact matchups where white removal, life gain, Ephemerate, or Dust to Dust matters.
Volatile Fjord
- Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton snow dual and Islandcycling target.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: enters tapped, taps for {U} or {R}, counts as snow for Skred, and is searchable by Lorien Revealed because it is an Island Mountain.
- Timing: choose when blue-red access and snow count are both important; avoid if the tapped entry stops immediate Brainstorm, Counterspell, Dispel, or Skred.
- Inputs / outputs: outputs blue or red mana after entering tapped; adds one snow permanent for Skred.
- Partners / packages: Lorien Revealed can find it; Skred counts it and may use its red mana; Counterspell and Cleansing Wildfire both benefit from its color pair over multiple turns.
- Role peers: Glacial Floodplain is the white-blue snow Island peer; Silverbluff Bridge is the blue-red artifact peer without snow.
- Failure modes: cannot produce white; tapped entry can cost the exact turn needed for interaction.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: useful when red removal and blue permission must both stay available; risky against fast starts if it is the only early colored source.
Thraben Charm
- Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton flexible interaction spell.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: answers a target creature through damage based on your creature count, destroys target enchantment, or exiles any number of target players' graveyards.
- Timing: use the damage mode when twice your creature count kills a relevant creature; save enchantment mode for a problematic enchantment; use graveyard mode before flashback, delve, escape, threshold, or recursion costs are paid.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{W}; outputs one of creature damage, enchantment destruction, or graveyard exile against targeted players.
- Mode map: damage mode targets a creature and deals damage equal to twice the number of creatures you control; enchantment mode destroys target enchantment; graveyard mode exiles any number of target players' graveyards. Choosing damage with too few creatures or graveyard exile after costs are paid is usually a mistake.
- Partners / packages: Murmuring Mystic Bird Illusion tokens increase the damage mode; Ephemerate, Mulldrifter, Augur of Bolas, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and Stonehorn Dignitary add creature count.
- Role peers: Destroy Evil can destroy enchantments; Skred and Suplex remove creatures; no other registered card exiles graveyards.
- Failure modes: damage mode scales poorly with an empty board; graveyard mode targets players, not individual cards, and does not undo spells already cast with graveyard costs.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against enchantment threats, graveyard engines, and creature boards where Mystic tokens make the damage lethal.
Dispel
- Deck role: main deck, 2 copies, narrow stack interaction and protection.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: counters target instant spell, protecting Counterspell fights, Ephemerate lines, Murmuring Mystic, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, or Union of the Third Path from instant-speed disruption.
- Timing: hold when the opponent represents instant removal, burn, counterspells, or card draw that matters; do not pass with only Dispel if the opponent is winning through creatures, artifacts, enchantments, or sorceries.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}; trades for one target instant spell on the stack.
- Partners / packages: Counterspell covers non-instant spells; Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, and Envelop add color or sorcery-specific stack density after sideboard.
- Role peers: Counterspell is broader but costs {U}{U}; Envelop hits sorcery spells only.
- Failure modes: cannot counter creatures, artifacts, enchantments, sorceries, planeswalkers, abilities, or resolved permanents; holding it too long can waste mana while the board worsens.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: high value against blue mirrors, burn, instant removal, and counter wars; sideboard out more often when the opponent's decisive cards are permanents or sorceries.
Ardent Elementalist
- Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton red recursion body.
- Role type: recursion; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: returns target instant or sorcery from your graveyard to hand, giving the deck a second Archaeomancer-style way to rebuy Counterspell, Ephemerate, Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Brainstorm, Lorien Revealed, Dispel, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, or Ride's End.
- Timing: cast when a specific graveyard spell is worth four mana now; avoid if the only targets are low-impact and the board needs immediate removal.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{R}; outputs a 2/1 body and one selected instant or sorcery from graveyard to hand.
- Partners / packages: Ephemerate can blink Ardent Elementalist for repeated recursion; Skred and Cleansing Wildfire help make red mana relevant before Elementalist appears.
- Role peers: Archaeomancer is the direct peer, trading red cost and 2/1 stats for blue cost and 1/2 stats.
- Failure modes: dies easily in combat and to sweepers; red mana can be strained when Snow-Covered Mountain, Silverbluff Bridge, Rustvale Bridge, or Volatile Fjord is unavailable.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in grindy matchups; trim or delay against fast aggro when four mana must stabilize with removal, life gain, or blockers.
Destroy Evil
- Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, plus sideboard, 1 copy; conditional white removal and sideboard bullet.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
- Deck-specific job: destroys target creature with toughness 4 or greater or destroys target enchantment, giving the deck clean answers where Skred count or damage-based removal is not enough.
- Timing: save for high-toughness creatures, enchantments, or post-board targets that other interaction cannot answer efficiently; spend earlier if the qualifying creature is driving lethal or snowball pressure.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{W}; outputs one destroyed qualifying creature or enchantment.
- Mode map: Creature mode targets only a creature with toughness 4 or greater; enchantment mode targets any enchantment. Do not choose it for creatures with toughness 3 or less, artifacts, spells on the stack, or nonenchantment permanents.
- Partners / packages: Counterspell can prevent nonqualifying threats from resolving; Skred, Suplex, Thraben Charm, and Ride's End cover different creature-removal windows.
- Role peers: Thraben Charm also destroys enchantments; Ride's End exiles a creature or Vehicle; Skred and Suplex handle creatures through damage.
- Failure modes: Dead against wide low-toughness boards without enchantments; cannot hit artifact creatures unless they are also creatures with toughness 4 or greater.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: bring in the sideboard copy against large creatures and enchantment-based engines; avoid overvaluing it against spell combo or artifact-only boards.
Suplex
- Deck role: main deck, 2 copies, sorcery-speed removal and artifact exile role player.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: either deals 3 damage to target creature and exiles it if it would die this turn, or exiles target artifact.
- Timing: cast precombat or main phase when sorcery speed still answers the threat; use artifact mode when a visible artifact is worth a full card and the tempo loss is acceptable.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{R}; outputs either 3 creature damage with a death-exile replacement this turn or exile of one target artifact.
- Mode map: creature mode targets a creature and is best against three-toughness threats, damaged larger creatures, or death-trigger/graveyard creatures; artifact mode targets an artifact and is best against artifact lands or payoff artifacts. Creature mode is poor when 3 damage will not matter; artifact mode is poor on expendable artifacts unless it disrupts mana, clock, or engine.
- Partners / packages: Skred handles scalable creature damage; Dust to Dust after sideboard exiles two artifacts; Cleansing Wildfire can pressure artifact lands through land targeting.
- Role peers: Skred is instant-speed scalable creature removal; Dust to Dust is a stronger but sideboard-only artifact answer; Thraben Charm and Destroy Evil cover other target classes.
- Failure modes: sorcery speed cannot answer attackers after combat begins or spells on the stack; creature mode does not hit players or planeswalkers.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: useful against creature decks with graveyard-relevant threats and artifact decks with meaningful artifacts; weaker against instant-speed combo or large creatures beyond 3 damage.
Brainstorm
- Deck role: main deck, 4 copies, core cheap selection and hand-sculpting spell.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: draws three cards, then puts two cards from hand on top of library, smoothing lands, colors, interaction, and late-game engines.
- Timing: cast before land drop when digging for a land, color, Skred, Counterspell, or Ephemerate; hold when Lorien Revealed Islandcycling or Cleansing Wildfire can later shuffle away unwanted cards.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}; outputs three drawn cards and two cards placed on top in any order, not true card advantage by itself.
- Partners / packages: Lorien Revealed Islandcycling and Cleansing Wildfire searches can shuffle away weak top cards; Augur of Bolas can use known top cards if they include an instant or sorcery.
- Role peers: Augur of Bolas selects from three while adding a body; Lorien Revealed draws three only when hard-cast.
- Failure modes: casting with no shuffle/search plan can trap two bad cards on top; putting away needed lands or interaction can lose the next turn cycle.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in slow games and mana-light hands; against pressure, use it only if it finds immediate defense or fixes the next land sequence.
Ride's End
- Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton exile removal.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: exiles target creature or Vehicle, with a cost reduction of {3} if it targets a tapped permanent.
- Timing: use for a tapped attacker, tapped Vehicle, or other creature that must be exiled; holding it for a tapped target is valuable unless an untapped threat will end the game.
- Inputs / outputs: normally consumes {4}{W}; consumes {1}{W} when targeting a tapped permanent because the spell costs {3} less; outputs exile of the target creature or Vehicle.
- Partners / packages: Skred and Suplex handle damage-based creature removal; Destroy Evil handles toughness-4-plus creatures or enchantments; Counterspell prevents threats before Ride's End is needed.
- Role peers: Destroy Evil is cheaper but narrower; Skred is cheaper but damage-limited; Suplex can exile a creature only if its damaged target would die that turn.
- Failure modes: Cannot target noncreature artifacts unless they are Vehicles, and cannot target enchantments, lands, or spells on the stack; paying five mana can be too slow against wide low-toughness pressure.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strongest against single large attackers, Vehicles, and death-recursion creatures where exile matters; weak against spell combo and wide boards of low-toughness creatures.
Pyroblast
- Deck role: sideboard, 2 copies, blue-facing stack and permanent answer.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
- Deck-specific job: either counters target spell if it's blue or destroys target permanent if it's blue, giving red one-mana leverage in blue matchups.
- Timing: hold for blue spells that matter on the stack or blue permanents that must be removed; spend early only if the target protects the opponent's engine or stops your own engine.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {R}; outputs a counter attempt that checks whether the target spell is blue on resolution or destroys a blue permanent.
- Mode map: counter mode targets any spell but only counters it if it is blue; destroy mode targets a permanent and destroys it if it is blue. Do not confuse this with Red Elemental Blast's stricter target wording.
- Partners / packages: Counterspell and Dispel fight stack wars; Murmuring Mystic, Mulldrifter, Ephemerate, Archaeomancer, and Ardent Elementalist are the engine pieces Pyroblast often protects.
- Role peers: Red Elemental Blast also answers blue, but its counter mode targets only a blue spell and its destroy mode targets only a blue permanent.
- Failure modes: weak if the opponent's decisive cards are nonblue; red mana from Rustvale Bridge, Silverbluff Bridge, Snow-Covered Mountain, or Volatile Fjord must be available.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: bring in against blue control, Faeries-style tempo, blue combo cantrips, and blue card-advantage engines.
Hydroblast
- Deck role: sideboard, 2 copies, red-facing stack and permanent answer.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
- Deck-specific job: either counters target spell if it's red or destroys target permanent if it's red, helping survive red burn, red threats, and red interaction.
- Timing: hold for lethal red spells, red sweepers, red removal aimed at Murmuring Mystic, or red permanents that drive damage; cast lower-value only when life total or tempo requires it.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}; outputs a counter attempt that checks whether the target spell is red on resolution or destroys a red permanent.
- Mode map: counter mode targets any spell but only counters it if it is red; destroy mode targets a permanent and destroys it if it is red. This can legally target broader objects than Blue Elemental Blast, but it only works if the object is red.
- Partners / packages: Union of the Third Path, Augur of Bolas, Skred, and Breath Weapon help stabilize red creature/burn plans while Hydroblast handles red stack or permanent pressure.
- Role peers: Blue Elemental Blast is the direct red-hate peer with stricter target wording.
- Failure modes: dead against nonred threats; cannot answer colorless artifacts or black-green-white creatures.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: bring in against red aggro, burn, red artifact shells, and red removal decks.
Dust to Dust
- Deck role: sideboard, 2 copies, artifact-exile bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal; hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: exiles two target artifacts at sorcery speed, punishing artifact lands, artifact creatures, and artifact engines.
- Timing: cast when two meaningful artifact targets are legal and exiling them changes mana, clock, or engine output; wait if only one low-value artifact is visible and spending three mana exposes you to lethal.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{W}{W}; outputs exile of two target artifacts.
- Partners / packages: Snow-Covered Plains, Rustvale Bridge, and Glacial Floodplain provide white mana; Suplex can exile one artifact; Cleansing Wildfire can pressure artifact lands through land targeting.
- Role peers: Suplex is the closest artifact answer but hits one artifact for {1}{R}; counterspells answer artifact spells only while on the stack.
- Failure modes: requires two legal artifact targets; sorcery speed can be too slow against immediate combat or burn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: bring in against Affinity, artifact lands, Experimental Synthesizer-style artifact engines, and artifact-heavy midrange.
Red Elemental Blast
- Deck role: sideboard, 2 copies, blue-facing stack and permanent answer.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
- Deck-specific job: counters target blue spell or destroys target blue permanent, improving blue matchups and protecting Jeskai Ephemerate's engines.
- Timing: hold for blue spells on the stack, blue removal/counters in engine fights, or resolved blue permanents that outscale your board.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {R}; outputs either a counter on a target blue spell or destruction of a target blue permanent.
- Mode map: counter mode can target only a blue spell; destroy mode can target only a blue permanent. Use Pyroblast differently when targeting flexibility matters.
- Partners / packages: Counterspell, Dispel, Pyroblast, and Envelop form the post-board stack plan against blue decks; Murmuring Mystic and Mulldrifter are the threats this often protects.
- Role peers: Pyroblast is the direct peer with "target spell if it's blue" and "target permanent if it's blue" wording.
- Failure modes: dead against nonblue cards; drawing too many red blasts without red mana can strand interaction.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: bring in against blue control, blue tempo, Terror-style blue threats, and blue combo or card-draw engines.
Blue Elemental Blast
- Deck role: sideboard, 2 copies, red-facing stack and permanent answer.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
- Deck-specific job: counters target red spell or destroys target red permanent, trading efficiently against red aggression, burn, and red removal.
- Timing: hold for red lethal burn, red sweepers, red threats, or red removal aimed at Murmuring Mystic; use earlier if it stops a snowballing red permanent.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}; outputs either a counter on a target red spell or destruction of a target red permanent.
- Mode map: counter mode can target only a red spell; destroy mode can target only a red permanent. Hydroblast has broader target wording but only works if the object is red on resolution.
- Partners / packages: Hydroblast doubles the red-hate density; Union of the Third Path, Skred, Augur of Bolas, and Breath Weapon support the same survival plan.
- Role peers: Hydroblast is the direct peer with "target spell if it's red" and "target permanent if it's red" wording.
- Failure modes: dead against nonred cards; cannot answer colorless artifact pressure unless the artifact is red.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: bring in against red burn, red aggro, red artifact shells, and red removal-heavy decks.
Envelop
- Deck role: sideboard, 2 copies, sorcery-specific stack bullet.
- Role type: interaction-stack; sideboard bullet.
- Deck-specific job: counters target sorcery spell, giving one-mana coverage against sorcery-speed draw, combo, land destruction, sweepers, discard, or graveyard engines.
- Timing: hold when the opponent's decisive action is a sorcery on the stack; do not keep up Envelop against creature, instant, artifact, or enchantment pressure if those are the real threats.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}; trades for one target sorcery spell on the stack.
- Partners / packages: Counterspell covers all spell types at {U}{U}; Dispel covers instant spells; Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Blue Elemental Blast cover color-defined stack fights.
- Role peers: Counterspell is broader; Dispel is similarly cheap but targets only instant spells.
- Failure modes: cannot counter instants, creatures, artifacts, enchantments, planeswalkers, abilities, or resolved permanents.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: bring in against sorcery-heavy combo, blue control with key draw sorceries, land-destruction sorceries, and graveyard plans relying on sorcery spells.
Stonehorn Dignitary
- Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, combat-prevention blink bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; lifegain/stabilization; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: when it enters, target opponent skips their next combat phase, buying a full attack step against combat-centric decks.
- Timing: cast when skipping the opponent's next combat phase prevents lethal, buys time for Mulldrifter or Murmuring Mystic, or sets up Ephemerate; avoid against burn, combo, or noncombat kill plans.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{W}; outputs a 1/4 body and a delayed combat-phase skip for target opponent.
- Partners / packages: Ephemerate can repeat the enter trigger; Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist can return Ephemerate to sustain the lock attempt.
- Role peers: Union of the Third Path buys time with life; Breath Weapon buys time by damaging non-Dragon creatures; Stonehorn Dignitary uniquely skips combat.
- Failure modes: target opponent still gets main phases and noncombat damage; removal after the trigger does not undo the skip, but removal before a planned Ephemerate loop stops repeated prevention.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: bring in against creature combat swarm and large attacker decks; leave out against spell combo, burn-only plans, and removal-heavy control without combat pressure.
Breath Weapon
- Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, small-creature sweeper bullet.
- Role type: interaction-sweeper; sideboard bullet.
- Deck-specific job: deals 2 damage to each non-Dragon creature, clearing low-toughness opposing boards while also hitting your own Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Murmuring Mystic, Ardent Elementalist, Stonehorn Dignitary, and Murmuring Mystic Bird Illusion tokens if they are non-Dragon creatures.
- Timing: cast when the opposing non-Dragon creatures killed or damaged matter more than your own creatures damaged or killed; use before combat if it opens survival or after blocks only if damage math remains favorable.
- Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{R}; outputs 2 damage marked on each non-Dragon creature.
- Partners / packages: Skred and Suplex handle single creatures that survive; Stonehorn Dignitary buys time when sweeping your own board is too costly.
- Role peers: no direct main-deck sweeper; closest role overlap is Skred for one creature and Thraben Charm when your creature count makes one target removable.
- Failure modes: damage is not toughness reduction and will not kill creatures with enough toughness or prevention; it can kill your own Murmuring Mystic tokens and small value creatures.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: bring in against Faeries, tokens, and small go-wide boards; avoid when your own Murmuring Mystic board is the primary win condition unless the opponent's board is more dangerous.
Interaction Priorities
-
Priority: Counterspell must answer cards that beat resolved removal or invalidate the value engine. Counter opposing combo starters, monarch/initiative-style snowball cards if present, large draw spells, graveyard engines before they become insulated, and removal aimed at a critical Murmuring Mystic, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, or Ephemerate chain when losing that piece would collapse the turn.
-
Priority: Skred should kill creatures that create immediate damage, mana, or engine snowball pressure. Count visible snow permanents before choosing the target, and do not assume Skred reaches a large creature unless the engine action and visible snow count support it. Use Skred early against fast attackers; save it against larger midrange threats when tokens, life gain, or blocks cover the small creatures.
-
Priority: Dispel protects the important stack fight, not every possible stack fight. Use Dispel over Counterspell when the legal target is an instant that counters Counterspell, kills Murmuring Mystic, breaks Ephemerate, stops Union of the Third Path, or wins a burn exchange. Ignore Dispel-only open mana when the opponent is advancing with creatures or artifacts that Dispel cannot touch.
-
Priority: Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, Suplex, and Ride's End are conditional answers whose legal target text matters more than role assumptions. Card text check required for exact mode and target limits if the prompt is ambiguous. Spend these on resolved threats that Skred cannot efficiently answer, graveyard lines when Thraben Charm legally interacts, or combat objects when the engine clearly exposes a relevant action.
-
Priority: Cleansing Wildfire is not primary interaction unless the visible matchup and legal target make land disruption materially better than developing your own mana. Default to targeting Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge for ramp and a card; consider opposing land targets only when the opponent is visibly mana-constrained, reliant on a specific nonbasic, or executing a land-dependent engine.
-
Bait: Use Augur of Bolas, Brainstorm, Cleansing Wildfire, or Lorien Revealed Islandcycling to draw out soft permission before committing Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, or a recursion creature. Do not bait with Ephemerate if the blink target is already the card that must survive.
-
Ignore: Do not spend Counterspell on low-power creatures that Skred, Suplex, Ride's End, tokens, or life gain can handle later. Do not spend premium removal on creatures that cannot attack profitably through Murmuring Mystic Birds unless they enable sacrifice, combo, pump, or repeated card advantage.
-
Archetype shift: Against aggro and burn, prioritize life total, cheap removal, Union of the Third Path, and Hydroblast or Blue Elemental Blast after sideboarding. Against blue control, prioritize stack leverage with Counterspell, Dispel, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Blue Elemental Blast, and recursive value. Against artifact decks, prioritize Dust to Dust when the engine exposes legal artifact targets. Against spell combo, prioritize Counterspell, Dispel, Envelop, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and fast pressure from Murmuring Mystic tokens.
Combat And Trading Rules
-
Priority: Preserve Murmuring Mystic when it is producing blockers or a clock; it is often more valuable than a single trade. Attack with Bird tokens freely when they do not reduce survival math, but hold enough back against visible crack-back damage, sacrifice payoffs, or pump mana.
-
Priority: Treat Augur of Bolas as an early stabilizer after its enters-the-battlefield value is gained. Trade Augur of Bolas with real attackers when it saves meaningful life or buys time for Mulldrifter, Union of the Third Path, or Cleansing Wildfire; avoid chump blocking with it when Skred or Suplex can answer the attacker cleanly.
-
Priority: Protect Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, and Ardent Elementalist only when the next blink or recursion loop is actually available or the body matters for survival. If a Mulldrifter has already drawn cards and the game is about life total, blocking is allowed; if Ephemerate can turn it into a large resource swing, prefer preserving it.
-
Priority: Use Ephemerate as protection in combat only when the blinked creature survives, the removed attacker or blocker math improves, and rebound has a likely target. Do not blink a creature merely to avoid a small amount of damage if the opponent can then win through the lost blocker or if a removal spell needs answering instead.
-
Priority: Block early against fast creature decks because this deck wins longer games. Trade Birds, Augur of Bolas, or spent value creatures for attackers that represent repeated damage, prowess pressure, sacrifice fuel, or equipment carriers. Take small damage when preserving a blocker lets Skred scale, Murmuring Mystic create more tokens, or Union of the Third Path swing the race.
-
Priority: Attack only when the damage changes the clock or pressures a planeswalker-like permanent if one is legally present; otherwise keep blockers for stabilization. Murmuring Mystic tokens can become the primary win condition, but losing the ability to block a lethal or near-lethal return attack is worse than dealing chip damage.
-
Life threshold: Below 8 life against red or aggressive decks, require a concrete reason to tap blockers or spend mana on noninteractive value. Below 5 life, prefer lines that survive visible attacks plus likely burn from public information; Union of the Third Path becomes a survival spell, not a luxury draw.
-
Archetype shift: Against control, attack more often with Mulldrifter, Augur of Bolas, and tokens because life total pressure forces action and protects long-game inevitability. Against aggro, block and trade aggressively until Murmuring Mystic or Mulldrifter turns the corner. Against combo, prioritize a fast but safe clock while holding Counterspell, Dispel, Envelop, or blast effects. Against artifact midrange, preserve enough pressure to punish slow artifact setup while saving Dust to Dust-style interaction for legal high-impact targets.
Selection And Tutor Rules
-
Priority: Treat Lorien Revealed as the deck's cleanest early pseudo-tutor when the legal action is Islandcycling. Use it before committing to a shaky hand, before casting Brainstorm that needs a shuffle-like reset, or when a missing blue source would strand Counterspell, Augur of Bolas, or Mulldrifter. Do not hold Lorien Revealed for full casting cost when the current problem is simply making lands and colors.
-
Priority: Use Brainstorm as a setup tool, not a random main-phase cantrip. Prefer casting Brainstorm when a land drop is needed now, when Lorien Revealed Islandcycling or Cleansing Wildfire can change the next draw, when protecting key cards from discard is relevant, or when you can immediately turn extra lands into action. Avoid locking two weak cards on top unless the visible game state is slow enough to tolerate it.
-
Priority: Sequence Lorien Revealed and Cleansing Wildfire around Brainstorm deliberately. If Brainstorm finds unwanted cards and a legal Lorien Revealed Islandcycling action or Cleansing Wildfire-on-your-Bridge line is available, use the shuffle/search effect before drawing more naturally. If the hand already has lands and action, keep Lorien Revealed as a late draw spell only when survival and interaction are covered.
-
Priority: Cast Augur of Bolas when finding Counterspell, Ephemerate, Skred, Brainstorm, Cleansing Wildfire, Dispel, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, or Ride's End matters more than preserving exact instant timing. Augur of Bolas is a selection spell attached to a blocker; use it early against pressure and before Brainstorm only when you need the body or a noncreature spell immediately.
-
Priority: Use Mulldrifter as card advantage when the game is about resources, and use Ephemerate on Mulldrifter when the legal blink line is likely to survive stack interaction. Evoke-plus-Ephemerate lines are powerful, but do not force them into open mana when losing both the creature and Ephemerate would be worse than simply cycling, holding Counterspell, or developing mana.
-
Priority: Use Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist as targeted recursion only after identifying the spell that changes the next turn cycle. Favor Ephemerate for a value engine, Counterspell or Dispel for stack wars, Skred or conditional removal for survival, Cleansing Wildfire or Brainstorm for resources, and Union of the Third Path when life total is the limiting resource. Card text check required for exact Ardent Elementalist return limits if the prompt is ambiguous.
-
Priority: Make land drops before discretionary selection when the legal actions suggest mana bottleneck. Play tapped artifact lands early when interaction is not needed this turn; hold a land only when Brainstorm needs cards to put back, when bluffing or preserving information matters, or when Lorien Revealed Islandcycling can choose the correct typed land first.
-
Bottom or decline: Put redundant tapped lands, late Cleansing Wildfire without a good target, extra expensive draw, or narrow interaction on the bottom or back on top only when they do not solve the visible board. Keep Counterspell, Skred, Ephemerate, and Union of the Third Path higher when the opponent is presenting pressure or stack threats.
Priority And Stack Rules
-
Priority: Pass with purpose when holding Counterspell, Dispel, Skred, Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Suplex, Ride's End, or sideboard blasts. Explain what you are declining to cast and what opposing action you are preserving mana for; do not tap out for value if a visible lethal, combo, or snowball spell is likely and a legal answer can cover it.
-
Priority: Counter the spell that breaks the game, not the first legal spell. Counterspell should answer payoffs, engines, lethal burn, protection over an important threat, or card-advantage spells that outscale your blink engine. Let low-impact creatures or redundant setup resolve when Skred, blockers, Murmuring Mystic tokens, or later removal can handle them.
-
Priority: Use Dispel only when the legal target is an instant that matters. Protect Ephemerate, Murmuring Mystic, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, Union of the Third Path, or Counterspell with Dispel when the stack text supports it; do not spend Dispel on a minor exchange if the opponent can still resolve the actual threat afterward.
-
Priority: Cast Ephemerate at instant speed for protection, enters-the-battlefield value, or combat math that changes survival. Good targets are Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and sometimes a threatened Murmuring Mystic if blinking is legal and beneficial. Do not blink without a target-specific reason, because rebound timing and target availability matter.
-
Priority: Respect rebound and optional windows from Ephemerate. If the rebound trigger offers a legal target, choose the creature that produces the highest immediate value or survival swing from visible text; if no meaningful target exists, do not assume a hidden future target. Letting rebound resolve poorly may still be legal, but the reason should name the visible constraint.
-
Priority: Use Skred before combat damage when killing an attacker or blocker changes damage, saves life, or preserves a key creature. Use it on end step only when tapping mana on your own turn would expose Counterspell or Dispel shields. Count visible snow permanents and do not assume lethal damage beyond rules-engine output.
-
Priority: Use Union of the Third Path as a survival or stabilizing instant when life total is the bottleneck. Cast it in response to burn or before damage only when the legal timing and visible gain/draw outcome improve survival; otherwise preserve mana for Counterspell or removal.
-
Priority: Let your own Cleansing Wildfire resolve on Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge when using it as ramp and card flow. Target opposing lands only when the visible land is central to the opponent's plan or mana denial is materially better than advancing your own resources.
-
Priority: In stack fights, sequence cheap protection before expensive commitment when legal. Lead with Dispel or blast effects on opposing counters when they protect Counterspell or Ephemerate; use Counterspell for the last must-answer object when possible. Do not fight over a spell that can safely resolve if the next object is more dangerous.
-
Priority: During combat trick windows, preserve mana until attackers, blockers, and damage implications are visible. Use removal before damage when it prevents lethal, saves Murmuring Mystic, or converts a block into value; pass when the opponent's action does not change the race and holding interaction covers a larger postcombat threat.
Sideboard Map
-
Map principle: Sideboard by opposing threat axis, then preserve Jeskai Ephemerate's core of mana, cards, and stack control. Keep enough blue sources and cheap interaction for Counterspell, Dispel, Brainstorm, Augur of Bolas, and Lorien Revealed; do not overload on narrow blasts when the opponent's visible threats are mostly permanents outside that color.
-
Pyroblast: Add against blue decks where countering a blue spell or answering a blue permanent is a legal and relevant exchange. It is strongest against Counterspell decks, Faeries, Terror shells, blue combo cantrips, and blue card-advantage engines. Weak when the opponent only splashes blue lightly or wins through nonblue creatures, artifacts, lands, or graveyard pressure.
-
Red Elemental Blast: Add for the same blue-facing role as Pyroblast, with emphasis on stack fights over Murmuring Mystic, Mulldrifter, Ephemerate, Counterspell, and sideboard haymakers. It is best when protecting your own value engine matters as much as stopping theirs. Weak when your mana will be constrained by red sources or when blue targets are too sparse.
-
Hydroblast: Add against red decks where preventing burn, red sweepers, red combo pieces, or red tempo threats matters. It is strongest against fast red aggro, Kuldotha-style artifact pressure, red removal aimed at Murmuring Mystic, and red reach that can finish through stabilized boards. Weak when the opponent's red cards are only support spells and their real threats are black, green, white, artifacts, or lands.
-
Blue Elemental Blast: Add beside Hydroblast when the red matchup is about survival and stack control. Use it to fight lethal burn, protect life-total stabilization from Union of the Third Path, or stop a red permanent if the rules engine offers that legal target. Weak when it leaves too few proactive cards or when the opponent can ignore one-for-one red interaction.
-
Dust to Dust: Add against artifact-centric decks, artifact lands, Affinity, Experimental Synthesizer shells, and decks whose mana or payoff permanents are artifacts. It is strongest when exiling two legal artifacts changes both tempo and resource count. Weak when the opponent has few artifacts, when spending three mana at sorcery speed exposes you to lethal, or when only low-value artifact targets are visible.
-
Envelop: Add against sorcery-heavy plans: land destruction, sweepers, discard sorceries, large draw sorceries, combo sorceries, and recursive graveyard engines that rely on a sorcery. It is strongest when Counterspell is too expensive to cover every key sorcery or when you need cheap stack density after tapping low. Weak against creature decks, instant-speed decks, artifact engines, and board states where the important legal spells are not sorceries.
-
Stonehorn Dignitary: Add against combat-centric creature decks where one skipped combat step can buy the turn needed for Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, Union of the Third Path, Skred, or Ephemerate. It becomes much stronger when Ephemerate can blink it and the opponent cannot easily remove it before the trigger matters. Weak against burn, combo, noncombat drain, heavy removal, and decks that can win without attacking.
-
Destroy Evil: Add against large-creature decks and enchantment-based threats when the rules engine shows legal targets that match the card. It complements the main-deck Destroy Evil by increasing clean answers to oversized creatures that Skred may not yet kill and to problematic enchantments. Weak against small go-wide boards, spell combo, artifact engines, or matchups where legal targets rarely appear.
-
Breath Weapon: Add against small-creature boards, token decks, Faeries, red swarm mirrors, and opponents that rely on many non-Dragon creatures with low toughness. Card text check required for exact damage and exclusions; use only according to legal engine output. Weak when your own Augur of Bolas, Murmuring Mystic tokens, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, or Stonehorn Dignitary are more important than the opposing creatures it would remove.
-
Balanced explicit plan versus blue tempo/control: Side in: 2 Pyroblast, 2 Red Elemental Blast, 2 Envelop Cut: 2 Suplex, 1 Ride's End, 1 Destroy Evil, 2 Skred
-
Plan note: Use this blue plan when the opponent presents Counterspell, blue card draw, Terror-style threats backed by permission, or Faeries-style flash interaction. Keep some Skred if the visible games showed many creatures that must die on board; reduce Cleansing Wildfire emphasis only if their mana is resilient and the game is not about reaching Mulldrifter plus Ephemerate mana.
-
Balanced explicit plan versus red aggro or red burn pressure: Side in: 2 Hydroblast, 2 Blue Elemental Blast, 1 Breath Weapon Cut: 2 Dispel, 1 Ride's End, 1 Destroy Evil, 1 Archaeomancer
-
Plan note: Use this red plan when life total and early board stabilization matter more than long recursion. Preserve Union of the Third Path, Skred, Augur of Bolas, and cheap blue cantrips because they bridge to the turns where Mulldrifter and Murmuring Mystic take over.
-
Balanced explicit plan versus artifact-heavy Affinity: Side in: 2 Dust to Dust, 1 Destroy Evil, 2 Hydroblast Cut: 2 Dispel, 1 Ride's End, 1 Archaeomancer, 1 Union of the Third Path
-
Plan note: Use this artifact plan when the opponent's mana, threats, or card engines expose legal artifact targets. Hydroblast is included only when the opponent's red cards or red interaction matter; if the visible build is not meaningfully red, Add role cards: 2 Dust to Dust, 1 Destroy Evil, and Reduce main-deck emphasis: narrow stack interaction and slow recursion.
-
Balanced explicit plan versus creature combat swarm: Side in: 1 Stonehorn Dignitary, 1 Breath Weapon, 1 Destroy Evil Cut: 2 Dispel, 1 Ride's End
-
Plan note: Use this creature plan when attacks are the primary loss path. Stonehorn Dignitary is a time-buying permanent, not a win condition by itself; prioritize Ephemerate on it only when skipping another combat step is worth more than blinking Mulldrifter, Augur of Bolas, Archaeomancer, or Ardent Elementalist.
-
Archetype rule: Against combo, Add role cards: Envelop, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Blue Elemental Blast according to the combo's visible spell colors and card types. Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature removal that has no legal targets, slow sorcery-speed value, and life-gain-only lines that do not stop the combo turn.
-
Archetype rule: Against graveyard or black midrange decks without clear sideboard bullets here, avoid diluting the core engine. Add role cards only when Destroy Evil, Envelop, or blasts match visible threats; otherwise keep Counterspell, Mulldrifter, Ephemerate, Skred, and Cleansing Wildfire as the honest plan.
-
Role-change rule: On the play, sideboard cards that protect tempo and stop setup spells gain value because Counterspell shields are online sooner. On the draw, cheap blasts, Breath Weapon, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, and Stonehorn Dignitary gain value when they prevent early snowballing before the blink engine is active.
Matchup Guidance
-
Aggro: Stabilize first with Augur of Bolas, Skred, Suplex, Union of the Third Path, and cheap interaction before chasing extra Mulldrifter value. Keep early hands that cast blue spells and interact by turn two; hands that only develop tapped Bridges and Lorien Revealed are risky against fast creature starts. Add role cards: Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Breath Weapon, Stonehorn Dignitary, and the extra Destroy Evil when visible threats match. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow recursion from Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist and narrow stack interaction when the opponent is mostly permanents.
-
Control: Prioritize land drops, card count, and protected engines over early damage. Cleansing Wildfire on Rustvale Bridge or Silverbluff Bridge is a clean way to pull ahead on mana while preserving material, and Brainstorm plus Lorien Revealed should be used to avoid missing lands. Fight over spells that change the resource axis: opposing draw engines, sweepers that erase Murmuring Mystic, and threats that invalidate Skred. Add role cards: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Envelop, and sometimes Dispel. Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature removal with few legal targets and life-gain lines that do not affect cards or board.
-
Combo: Identify the combo turn and keep mana untapped when the opponent can convert resources into a win. Counterspell is the default shield, Dispel covers instant-speed protection or payoff fights, and Envelop is valuable when the visible combo relies on sorceries. Use Cleansing Wildfire only when it advances your mana while leaving a relevant interaction window or when damaging their mana is more important than holding two blue. Add role cards: Envelop plus color blasts matching the visible combo pieces. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Skred, Suplex, Destroy Evil, Ride's End, and Union of the Third Path unless the engine shows legal targets or life total is the combo axis. Card text check required for Ride's End before relying on a matchup-specific role.
-
Tempo: Protect mana development and do not let a small threat plus permission lock you under your own tapped lands. Augur of Bolas is important because it blocks while finding Counterspell, Skred, Brainstorm, Dispel, or Ephemerate. Skred should answer the threat that makes their soft-control posture lethal; do not spend it on a low-pressure creature if Murmuring Mystic or Mulldrifter can overtake the board next turn. Add role cards: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, and Envelop according to colors and spell types. Reduce main-deck emphasis: expensive sorcery-speed lines when the opponent is representing cheap interaction.
-
Midrange: Become the stronger card-advantage deck by trading one-for-one early and then blinking Mulldrifter, Augur of Bolas, Archaeomancer, or Ardent Elementalist. Counterspell should stop haymakers, engines, and removal aimed at Murmuring Mystic when Mystic is your best board plan. Cleansing Wildfire is excellent when the game is about reaching six or more mana for double-spell turns. Add role cards: Destroy Evil for large creatures or enchantments, Dust to Dust for artifact midrange, and blasts when their most important threats or answers are red or blue. Reduce main-deck emphasis: narrow answers that miss their shown permanents.
-
Big mana: Attack their development only when Cleansing Wildfire has a real mana-denial or acceleration role; otherwise save counters for payoff spells. Lorien Revealed is strong because big mana games reward land drops and late-game cards, but cycling-like setup must not expose you to an unanswered payoff turn. Murmuring Mystic is a clock that also protects life total, so commit it when you can either protect it or when waiting gives the opponent too much time. Add role cards: Envelop against sorcery payoffs, Pyroblast or Red Elemental Blast against blue draw or permission, and Destroy Evil when large creatures or enchantments are visible. Reduce main-deck emphasis: small creature removal when their threats are oversized or noncreature.
-
Graveyard: Respect graveyard payoffs with Counterspell timing because this registered sideboard has no dedicated graveyard hate. Use Skred, Suplex, Destroy Evil, and Ride's End only on legal battlefield threats that actually matter; do not assume removing one creature stops recursion unless the rules engine confirms the effect. Ephemerate on Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist can rebuy Counterspell or removal to keep pace with recursive engines. Add role cards: Envelop when key graveyard actions are sorceries, blasts when the payoff colors match, and Destroy Evil only for visible legal targets. Reduce main-deck emphasis: life gain and slow value that does not interrupt the graveyard turn.
-
Artifact/enchantment: Use Dust to Dust as a tempo-and-resource swing when two meaningful artifact targets are legal, especially artifact lands or payoff artifacts. Cleansing Wildfire can punish artifact-land mana while replacing itself, but do not assume it destroys Bridges in a beneficial way unless the legal action and target are shown by the engine. Destroy Evil handles qualifying enchantments or large creatures, while Counterspell should cover artifact payoffs that are more dangerous than the current board. Add role cards: Dust to Dust, Destroy Evil, and Hydroblast or Blue Elemental Blast when red artifact shells are present. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Dispel and creature-only interaction when the opponent is permanent-engine heavy.
-
Go-wide: Preserve life total and board parity until Breath Weapon, Skred, Stonehorn Dignitary, or Murmuring Mystic tokens can reset the race. Card text check required for Breath Weapon exact damage and exclusions; choose it only from legal actions and account for your own Augur of Bolas, Murmuring Mystic tokens, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and Stonehorn Dignitary. Union of the Third Path is best after stabilizing or when life gain prevents lethal next turn. Add role cards: Breath Weapon, Stonehorn Dignitary, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, and Destroy Evil when a large anthem-like or creature threat is legal. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow recursion and narrow counters if the board is the immediate problem.
-
Single-threat: Trade resources to answer the one threat cleanly, then win with card advantage. Counterspell is strongest before the threat resolves; Skred scales with Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Mountain, Snow-Covered Plains, Glacial Floodplain, and Volatile Fjord for later removal; Destroy Evil and Suplex should be held for creatures they legally answer. Ephemerate can protect or rebuy value creatures after the threat is handled, but do not tap below interaction if the opponent can deploy a second must-answer permanent. Add role cards: Destroy Evil, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Blue Elemental Blast when they line up with the threat. Reduce main-deck emphasis: sweep-style or life-gain-only cards.
-
Burn: Treat life total as the central resource and stop damage before maximizing cards. Union of the Third Path is a high-priority stabilizer when it resolves for meaningful life, and Augur of Bolas is valuable because it blocks while finding Counterspell, Dispel, Skred, or Brainstorm. Do not shock yourself through sequencing assumptions; use tapped lands and basics according to legal mana needs. Add role cards: Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, and sometimes Dispel or Breath Weapon if creatures are part of the burn plan. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist loops and expensive value spells when shields are down.
-
Removal-heavy: Make the opponent spend removal on low-value bodies before committing Murmuring Mystic, or commit Mystic when you can immediately generate value or protect it with Counterspell, Dispel, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Blue Elemental Blast as appropriate. Ephemerate should save a creature or rebuy an enter-the-battlefield effect only when the target is legal and the resulting card or tempo gain matters. Mulldrifter is the cleanest path through removal because it leaves cards even when answered. Add role cards: color blasts matching their removal and Envelop when their strongest removal or sweepers are sorceries. Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature combat tricks and removal that lacks targets.
Specific Matchup Notes
-
General/archetype-only: Treat these notes as matchup heuristics until revealed cards, public zones, and legal actions identify the opponent's real plan. Revealed cards override assumptions, and Veles must choose only from the engine-provided action list.
-
Blue control: Protect the long game by making land drops with Lorien Revealed and Cleansing Wildfire, then win through Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, Archaeomancer, or Ardent Elementalist recursion. Priority targets are opposing card draw, protected finishers, and counters aimed at Murmuring Mystic or Ephemerate value chains. Add role cards: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Dispel, and Envelop when legal targets are blue instants, blue spells, or sorceries. Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature removal that has no visible targets.
-
Red aggro or burn: Preserve life before maximizing cards, because Union of the Third Path, Augur of Bolas, Skred, Hydroblast, and Blue Elemental Blast can buy the turn cycle needed for Mulldrifter or Murmuring Mystic to take over. Priority targets are high-damage burn spells, haste creatures, and threats that invalidate blocking. Add role cards: Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Breath Weapon, and Stonehorn Dignitary when go-wide pressure is shown. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist loops while life total is under immediate pressure.
-
Artifact decks: Use Dust to Dust when two meaningful artifact targets are legal and the play changes the opponent's mana, clock, or engine. Priority targets are artifact lands, payoff artifacts, and threats that survive Skred or Suplex. Cleansing Wildfire can pressure artifact-land mana only when the rules engine offers the target and the exchange is favorable from visible state. Add role cards: Dust to Dust, Destroy Evil, Hydroblast, and Blue Elemental Blast when red artifact threats or enchantment/large-creature targets are visible. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Dispel when their key plays are permanents.
-
Creature midrange: Trade early with Skred, Suplex, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, and Ride's End only on legal targets that matter, then pull ahead with Ephemerate plus Mulldrifter, Augur of Bolas, Archaeomancer, or Ardent Elementalist. Card text check required for Suplex, Ride's End, and Thraben Charm exact modes; follow legal action text and visible targets. Priority targets are creatures that race Murmuring Mystic tokens, remove your value creatures, or stop your blockers from stabilizing. Add role cards: Destroy Evil, Breath Weapon, and Stonehorn Dignitary when shown creatures justify them.
-
Graveyard or recursion decks: Counter the engine turn when possible because this sideboard has no dedicated graveyard hate. Priority targets are enablers or payoffs that the rules engine shows as spells, abilities, or battlefield threats; do not assume graveyard contents are stopped unless a legal action explicitly does it. Add role cards: Envelop for sorcery engines, Pyroblast or Red Elemental Blast for blue graveyard spells, Hydroblast or Blue Elemental Blast for red payoffs, and Destroy Evil only for qualifying visible targets.
Risk Summary
-
Mana risk: The deck needs blue early for Brainstorm, Counterspell, Augur of Bolas, Dispel, Lorien Revealed, and Mulldrifter, but also needs red for Skred and white for Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Destroy Evil, and sideboard cards. Rustvale Bridge, Silverbluff Bridge, Glacial Floodplain, Volatile Fjord, Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Mountain, and Snow-Covered Plains sequencing must preserve the next legal interaction window, not merely maximize tapped-land efficiency.
-
Matchup risk: The deck can be too slow against fast creature or burn starts if it spends early turns on Cleansing Wildfire, Lorien Revealed, or Brainstorm without affecting the board. Stabilize first when life total, attackers, or stack damage make the next turn cycle unsafe.
-
Draw risk: Brainstorm without a shuffle, fetch, or useful follow-up can trap weak cards; Lorien Revealed as setup can be correct only when the visible board allows the tempo loss. Do not turn a keepable hand into a passive hand by over-filtering instead of casting Augur of Bolas, Skred, or Counterspell.
-
Over-sideboarding risk: Do not dilute the Ephemerate, Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, Counterspell, and card-selection core for narrow answers. Add role cards only when the opponent's revealed cards prove Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Envelop, Dust to Dust, Stonehorn Dignitary, Destroy Evil, or Breath Weapon line up.
-
Graveyard risk: Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist are value engines but expose the deck to graveyard disruption and tempo loss. Use recursion when the returned Counterspell, Ephemerate, Skred, or draw spell changes the game before the opponent's next major action.
-
Sweeper/removal risk: Breath Weapon and removal can hit your own board or leave you without a closer if used carelessly. Card text check required for Breath Weapon exact damage and exclusions; account for Augur of Bolas, Murmuring Mystic tokens, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, and Stonehorn Dignitary before selecting it.
-
Closer risk: Murmuring Mystic is the main battlefield closer, but tapping out for it into removal or a faster payoff can lose tempo. Commit Murmuring Mystic when it can produce value soon, be protected by Counterspell or Dispel, or when waiting gives the opponent a stronger window.
-
Interaction risk: Counterspell and Dispel are strongest when held for decisive spells, but passing forever lets the opponent exploit your unused mana. Spend interaction when the visible threat, stack object, or protected engine matters more than the future unknown.
-
Sequencing risk: Ephemerate can save or rebuy creatures, but using it on low-impact targets can strand mana and weaken later Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, or Ardent Elementalist turns. Choose blink targets from legal visible actions and prefer the target whose enter-the-battlefield value or protection changes the next turn cycle.
Test Feedback Checklist
-
Deciding factor: Identify whether the game turned on mana development, early survival, Counterspell timing, Ephemerate value, Murmuring Mystic pressure, Mulldrifter cards, or failure to close after stabilizing.
-
Mulligans: Record whether kept hands had early blue mana, at least one credible early action, and a plan for Rustvale Bridge, Silverbluff Bridge, Glacial Floodplain, Volatile Fjord, Snow-Covered Island, Snow-Covered Mountain, or Snow-Covered Plains sequencing.
-
Mana: Note every game where Counterspell, Skred, Ephemerate, Union of the Third Path, Destroy Evil, or sideboard blasts were stranded by color, tapped lands, or Cleansing Wildfire timing.
-
Velocity: Check whether Brainstorm, Lorien Revealed, Cleansing Wildfire, and Augur of Bolas improved the next turn cycle or merely spent mana while the opponent advanced a clock or engine.
-
Engine: Track whether Ephemerate targeted Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, Murmuring Mystic protection, or a low-impact creature, and whether the rebound mattered before the opponent’s next major action.
-
Removal: Record whether Skred, Suplex, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, Ride's End, and Breath Weapon hit threats that actually changed survival, pressure, or engine access. Card text check required for Suplex, Thraben Charm, Ride's End, and Breath Weapon exact modes before treating any unclear line as proven.
-
Countermagic: Review each Counterspell, Dispel, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, and Envelop decision for whether it answered a decisive spell or was held too long while a permanent-based threat won the game.
-
Sideboard: After each post-board game, confirm whether Dust to Dust, Stonehorn Dignitary, Destroy Evil, Breath Weapon, Envelop, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Blue Elemental Blast had visible legal targets often enough to justify their role.
-
Closing: Record whether Murmuring Mystic tokens, Mulldrifter attacks, and value-creature pressure converted stabilization into a win, or whether the deck gave the opponent too many draw steps after gaining control.
-
Role: Ask whether the pilot correctly shifted between control, stabilizing midrange, and proactive pressure, especially after resolving Murmuring Mystic or when the opponent stopped presenting immediate threats.
-
Mistakes: Flag passes with unused interaction, missed land-development windows, Brainstorm without a useful follow-up, Ephemerate on a marginal target, and removal spent on creatures that did not affect the race or engine.
-
Stranded cards: List every repeated hand card that stayed uncast because of color, timing, target restrictions, opposing archetype, or rules-engine legality; separate mana problems from low matchup relevance.
-
Overperformers and underperformers: Compare actual game impact for Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, Counterspell, Ephemerate, Skred, Cleansing Wildfire, Lorien Revealed, Brainstorm, Union of the Third Path, and each sideboard card.
First Tuning Questions
-
Card quantities: Should Murmuring Mystic remain at 2 copies if games show frequent stabilization without a timely closer, or does the deck need more closing density without weakening interaction and card flow?
-
Card quantities: Should Union of the Third Path stay at 2 copies if red aggro and burn games hinge on life total, or is it too slow when the opponent pressures before card count is high?
-
Card quantities: Should Ephemerate remain at 3 copies if blink targets are often absent or low-impact, or should the creature package around Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, and Ardent Elementalist be adjusted first?
-
Mana: Should the artifact dual land count or snow basic mix change if Counterspell plus Skred plus white spells repeatedly conflict in the first four turns?
-
Mana: Should Cleansing Wildfire remain at 4 copies if the deck often cannot afford the early tempo cost, or is the mana acceleration and artifact-land pressure essential in slower matchups?
-
Aggro plan: Does the main deck need more early stabilizers if Skred, Suplex, Thraben Charm, Destroy Evil, Ride's End, and Union of the Third Path cannot reliably bridge to Mulldrifter and Murmuring Mystic?
-
Control plan: Does the sideboard have the right mix of Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Dispel, Envelop, Hydroblast, and Blue Elemental Blast, or are too many reactive cards competing for the same stack windows?
-
Artifact plan: Are 2 Dust to Dust enough against artifact-heavy decks, or do results show that artifact mana and threats remain ahead despite Cleansing Wildfire and removal?
-
Closer plan: Does the deck need an additional resilient win condition if Murmuring Mystic is removed, countered, or too slow, or do Mulldrifter plus recursion loops close adequately in real logs?
-
Sideboard slots: Is Stonehorn Dignitary a high-impact singleton against combat decks when paired with Ephemerate, or is the slot too narrow without consistent access and blink protection?
-
Sideboard slots: Is Breath Weapon covering the go-wide matchups without damaging the deck’s own board plan, or should the sweeper role be reconsidered after exact card-text verification?
-
Role conflicts: Is the deck losing games because it tries to be control while needing to pressure, or because it commits Murmuring Mystic and Mulldrifter before protecting the stack and battlefield state?
-
Selection package: Are Brainstorm and Lorien Revealed improving hand quality enough without fetchlands beyond landcycling and Cleansing Wildfire shuffle effects, or are weak cards being locked in too often?
-
Recursion package: Are Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist returning decisive spells often enough, or do they create slow hands that depend too heavily on graveyard access and Ephemerate?
Veles Tactical Policy
Policy: Keep Functional Blue Interaction Hands
- Priority: High
- Decision families: mulligan, pregame
- Cards: Counterspell, Brainstorm, Lorien Revealed, Augur of Bolas, Skred, Ephemerate, Cleansing Wildfire
- Phase windows: opening hand, mulligan, London bottom
- Runtime cues: prompt:mulligan, action:keep, action:mulligan, action:bottom
- Use when: judge whether the hand can produce blue mana, make an early play, and either interact or develop before the opponent's second meaningful turn.
- Avoid when: the hand has no blue source, no landcycling route, only tapped mana with no early action against pressure, or spells that require colors the visible lands cannot supply.
- Instructions: keep slower hands only when Lorien Revealed, Brainstorm, or Cleansing Wildfire visibly fixes the next two turns and the matchup is not presenting immediate lethal pressure.

- Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Bottom Redundant Expensive Cards After Mulligan
- Priority: Medium
- Decision families: mulligan, selection
- Cards: Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, Lorien Revealed
- Phase windows: London bottom prompt
- Runtime cues: action:bottom
- Use when: bottoming decisions require preserving early mana, interaction, and one card-flow plan.
- Avoid when: the expensive card is the only visible route to cards or victory in a slow matchup.
- Instructions: keep the first credible stabilizer or card engine; bottom duplicate five-mana cards, recursion without targets, and color-stranded spells before cutting lands needed for Counterspell or Skred.

Policy: Establish Blue And Snow Mana Before Greed
- Priority: Medium
- Decision families: mana, selection
- Cards: Snow-Covered Island, Silverbluff Bridge, Rustvale Bridge, Glacial Floodplain, Volatile Fjord, Snow-Covered Mountain, Snow-Covered Plains, Counterspell, Skred
- Phase windows: land play, early main phases
- Runtime cues: action:play
- Use when: selecting land drops or sequencing tapped artifact lands affects Counterspell, Skred scaling, white interaction, or future Cleansing Wildfire.
- Avoid when: a legal immediate answer is required before developing a tapped land.
- Instructions: prioritize untapped or cycling-access blue for Counterspell and Brainstorm, preserve snow count for Skred, and sequence artifact bridges so Cleansing Wildfire can convert tempo into mana without cutting off interaction.

Policy: Execute Lorien Revealed Landcycling For Blue Source
- Priority: Low
- Decision families: mana, selection
- Cards: Lorien Revealed, Snow-Covered Island
- Phase windows: early turns, upkeep, main phase, end step
- Runtime cues: action:cycle Lorien Revealed
- Use when: the visible hand lacks a blue-producing land and the legal action text offers landcycling for Lorien Revealed.
- Avoid when: the visible hand already has enough lands for the next two turns and casting Lorien Revealed is a realistic near-term card-advantage plan.
- Instructions: choose landcycling to make the deck function; this is deterministic only when the issue is missing blue mana and the engine exposes the landcycling action.

Policy: Use Cleansing Wildfire As Mana Engine, Not Tempo Default
- Priority: Medium
- Decision families: mana, priority, selection
- Cards: Cleansing Wildfire, Rustvale Bridge, Silverbluff Bridge
- Phase windows: main phase with sorcery-speed action
- Runtime cues: action:cast Cleansing Wildfire, action:target Rustvale Bridge, action:target Silverbluff Bridge
- Use when: casting Cleansing Wildfire improves future mana or card flow without leaving a visible threat unanswered.
- Avoid when: spending two mana sorcery speed allows a threatening board, stack, or combat step to overrun available Skred, Suplex, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, Ride's End, Counterspell, or Dispel.
- Instructions: target your indestructible artifact land when legal and tactically selected; target opponent lands only when the visible game state makes mana denial materially stronger than development.

Policy: Cast Augur Of Bolas To Bridge Early Turns
- Priority: Medium
- Decision families: priority, selection, combat
- Cards: Augur of Bolas, Brainstorm, Counterspell, Skred, Ephemerate, Cleansing Wildfire
- Phase windows: early main phase, precombat main phase
- Runtime cues: action:cast Augur of Bolas
- Use when: the deck needs a blocker, spell selection, or a body to blink later.
- Avoid when: holding mana for Counterspell, Skred, Dispel, or sideboard blasts answers a visible decisive spell or attack more cleanly.
- Instructions: treat Augur of Bolas as stabilization first and card selection second; after Brainstorm, use it to convert known top cards into a spell when the legal action exists.

Policy: Commit Murmuring Mystic Only Through A Gate
- Priority: High
- Decision families: priority, interaction, combat
- Cards: Murmuring Mystic, Counterspell, Dispel, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Envelop
- Phase windows: main phase, protected tap-out turn, post-stabilization
- Runtime cues: action:cast Murmuring Mystic
- Use when: deciding whether to tap out for the primary token engine or wait with interaction.
- Avoid when: the opponent has visible pressure, open interaction, or a stack window where holding permission prevents a larger loss.
- Instructions: cast Murmuring Mystic when it can survive or immediately convert future instants and sorceries into pressure; delay it when the current role is survival or stack control.

Policy: Resolve Mulldrifter As Card Advantage Or Stabilizer
- Priority: Medium
- Decision families: priority, selection, combat
- Cards: Mulldrifter, Ephemerate, Counterspell, Dispel
- Phase windows: main phase, evoke window, blink window
- Runtime cues: action:cast Mulldrifter, action:evoke Mulldrifter
- Use when: choosing between drawing cards now, developing a flyer, or preserving mana for interaction.
- Avoid when: tapping out loses to a visible stack threat, lethal combat, or a permanent that current interaction must answer.
- Instructions: evoke when two cards and possible Ephemerate matter more than a body; hard-cast when a flyer blocks, pressures planes of attack, or gives the deck time to leverage cards.

Policy: Route Ephemerate Targets Through Tactical Evaluation
- Priority: High
- Decision families: priority, interaction, selection
- Cards: Ephemerate, Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, Murmuring Mystic, Stonehorn Dignitary
- Phase windows: removal response, end step, rebound, combat prevention setup
- Runtime cues: action:cast Ephemerate, action:target
- Use when: the legal target choice changes cards drawn, spell recursion, protection, combat prevention, or clock.
- Avoid when: blinking a creature has no visible payoff, exposes rebound to poor timing, or consumes white mana needed for survival.
- Instructions: choose the target by next-turn-cycle impact; protect a key creature from removal, rebuy Mulldrifter or Augur of Bolas for cards, recur decisive interaction with Archaeomancer or Ardent Elementalist, and use Stonehorn Dignitary only when its exact legal effect is relevant.

Policy: Take Deterministic Ephemerate Rebound On Same Named Engine Target
- Priority: Low
- Decision families: priority, selection
- Cards: Ephemerate, Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, Augur of Bolas
- Phase windows: upkeep rebound prompt
- Runtime cues: action:cast Ephemerate without paying its mana cost
- Use when: the only legal Ephemerate target is Mulldrifter, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist, or Augur of Bolas and no optional target alternatives appear.
- Avoid when: multiple legal targets are listed or the rules engine asks a new target choice with changed public information.
- Instructions: execute the rebound when the legal text exposes exactly one target among these named engine creatures.
- Pilot skill floor: no-api

Policy: Spend Counterspell On Decisive Windows
- Priority: High
- Decision families: interaction, priority
- Cards: Counterspell, Dispel, Envelop, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast
- Phase windows: opponent spell on stack, protected engine turn, lethal prevention
- Runtime cues: action:cast Counterspell, action:cast Dispel, action:cast Envelop, action:cast Pyroblast, action:cast Red Elemental Blast, action:cast Hydroblast, action:cast Blue Elemental Blast
- Use when: countering changes a decisive threat, protects Murmuring Mystic or Mulldrifter value, stops lethal, or prevents an opposing engine from resolving.
- Avoid when: the spell is low impact, the opponent's battlefield already demands removal, or a narrower counter can answer the same stack object.
- Instructions: use narrow counters first when their legal target matches; preserve Counterspell for broad threats and protect key turns rather than trading it for replaceable setup spells.

Policy: Use Removal By Threat Function
- Priority: High
- Decision families: interaction, combat, priority
- Cards: Skred, Suplex, Destroy Evil, Thraben Charm, Ride's End, Breath Weapon
- Phase windows: precombat, declare attackers, declare blockers, end step, stack response when legal
- Runtime cues: action:cast Skred, action:cast Suplex, action:cast Destroy Evil, action:cast Thraben Charm, action:cast Ride's End, action:cast Breath Weapon
- Use when: removing a creature or permanent changes lethal math, protects an engine, stops a snowballing threat, or opens a controlled attack.
- Avoid when: the target is replaceable and the deck can stabilize with blocks, life gain, or a later sweeper. Card text check required for Suplex, Thraben Charm, Ride's End, and Breath Weapon exact modes.
- Instructions: prefer Skred for scalable creature removal, save Destroy Evil for legal high-impact targets, and choose uncertain modal cards only from rules-engine legal text.

Policy: Use Union Of The Third Path For Survival Swing
- Priority: Medium
- Decision families: priority, interaction
- Cards: Union of the Third Path, Brainstorm, Lorien Revealed, Mulldrifter
- Phase windows: main phase or instant-speed window when legal
- Runtime cues: action:cast Union of the Third Path
- Use when: life total is under pressure and the visible hand size or card count makes the life gain meaningful before the next combat or burn window.
- Avoid when: spending mana on Union of the Third Path prevents Counterspell, Skred, Dispel, or a required blocker from addressing the actual threat.
- Instructions: treat it as a stabilizing spell, not a cantrip; cast it when life buys enough time for card advantage or Murmuring Mystic to take over.

Policy: Attack Only After Stabilization Or Evasion Advantage
- Priority: Medium
- Decision families: combat
- Cards: Murmuring Mystic, Mulldrifter, Augur of Bolas, Archaeomancer, Ardent Elementalist
- Phase windows: beginning of combat, declare attackers
- Runtime cues: action:attack
- Use when: attacks do not sacrifice necessary blockers and advance a real clock with flyers, tokens, or expendable bodies.
- Avoid when: holding creatures back prevents lethal, protects life total, or keeps Ephemerate and recursion targets available.
- Instructions: pressure once control is established; before then, preserve blockers and engine creatures unless the legal attack clearly ends the game or forces a favorable race.
- Pilot skill floor: light-model

Policy: Block To Convert Time Into Cards
- Priority: High
- Decision families: combat, interaction
- Cards: Augur of Bolas, Mulldrifter, Murmuring Mystic, Stonehorn Dignitary, Ephemerate, Skred
- Phase windows: declare blockers, combat trick windows
- Runtime cues: action:block
- Use when: blocking prevents lethal, protects a future card-advantage turn, or sets up a legal Ephemerate or removal line.
- Avoid when: blocking loses Murmuring Mystic or a recursion creature without changing the race or survival.
- Instructions: trade small creatures for time against aggression; preserve engine pieces unless the current combat step threatens a decisive life-total collapse.
- Pilot skill floor: light-model

Policy: Sideboard By Opponent Axis
- Priority: High
- Decision families: sideboard, pregame
- Cards: Pyroblast, Hydroblast, Dust to Dust, Red Elemental Blast, Blue Elemental Blast, Envelop, Stonehorn Dignitary, Destroy Evil, Breath Weapon, Dispel, Union of the Third Path, Cleansing Wildfire, Suplex
- Phase windows: sideboarding after game 1, sideboarding after game 2
- Runtime cues: prompt:sideboard, action:submit sideboard
- Use when: choosing legal sideboard plans against blue stack decks, red aggression, artifact decks, combat decks, go-wide decks, or spell-combo decks.
- Avoid when: a card's color, target, or timing has not appeared and the main-deck role it replaces is still essential.
- Instructions: add blasts and Envelop for stack fights, Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast for red pressure, Dust to Dust for artifact-heavy boards, Stonehorn Dignitary for combat lock attempts, Destroy Evil for legal large/enchantment threats, and Breath Weapon only after exact text and board impact are verified.

Policy: Pass With Interaction Only For A Named Purpose
- Priority: Medium
- Decision families: priority, interaction, mana
- Cards: Counterspell, Dispel, Skred, Ephemerate, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Envelop
- Phase windows: opponent turn, end step, combat trick window, empty stack priority
- Runtime cues: action:pass
- Use when: passing preserves mana for a visible or strongly represented interaction window and no sorcery-speed development changes the next turn cycle more.
- Avoid when: passing wastes mana while behind on board, misses a required land-development play, or leaves Murmuring Mystic pressure undeployed in a stable game.
- Instructions: explain the card or class of legal response being held up; if no response matters, advance mana, cards, or board instead.

Policy: Execute Exact Lethal Attack When Only One Legal Attack Exists
- Priority: High
- Decision families: combat
- Cards: Murmuring Mystic, Mulldrifter
- Phase windows: declare attackers
- Runtime cues: action:attack with all creatures
- Use when: the opponent's visible life total is less than or equal to the listed unblocked attacking power and the rules engine offers exactly one attack action.
- Avoid when: blockers, prevention, removal, or multiple attack configurations are visible in legal actions.
- Instructions: take the lethal attack only when the visible legal action text and public life total make the attack deterministic.
