Deck Name And Archetype

Zoraline, Cosmos Caller is a 100-card Commander deck with Zoraline, Cosmos Caller as the named commander, 99 listed supporting cards, and no sideboard. The registered main deck count validates to 100 cards: 1 Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, 4 Plains, 14 Swamp, and 81 other single-copy cards. The sideboard count validates to 0 cards, so this guide must not propose executable sideboard swaps unless the registered list changes.

  • Format: Commander.
  • Strategy name: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller.
  • Commander: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller.
  • Registered colors by mana base and card names: primarily black-white, with Plains, Swamp, Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Caves of Koilos, Thriving Moor, Thriving Heath, Path of Ancestry, and other utility lands suggesting Orzhov requirements.
  • Current tags: midrange, tribal.
  • Stock status: rogue or highly customized, not stock. The list mixes named tribal support, life-gain/life-loss engines, artifacts, and singletons with several cards whose exact Oracle text or legality may need runtime or database confirmation.
  • Build identity: hybrid commander midrange/tribal. The deck appears to lean on Bat/Cleric-like creature typing, life total movement, drain payoffs, incremental combat, and artifact/anthem or tribal enablers rather than a single deterministic combo plan.
  • Legality concern: Commander singleton structure is mostly respected outside basic lands, but legality is not certified here. Card text check required for any unfamiliar or newly printed names before relying on color identity, timing, trigger, or type-line assumptions.
  • Mana concern: The deck has a heavy Swamp count and many black-sounding spells, but also enough white cards and white lands that opening hands must prove access to both colors or a credible route to them. Do not keep speculative white-heavy hands on Swamp-only mana unless the legal actions and visible hand show functional black plays.
  • Role concern: The list should be piloted as a board-and-life-resource midrange deck, not as a generic Commander good-stuff pile. The agent should treat Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Maskwood Nexus, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Mirkwood Bats, Regal Bloodlord, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Lunar Convocation, and Bontu's Monument as likely identity cards, while still checking actual legal text before committing to an engine line.
  • Opponent info status: none supplied. Runtime decisions must infer opponent role only from revealed commander, visible lands, public permanents, graveyards, stack objects, known revealed cards, and prior logged actions. Do not assume hidden removal, sweepers, combo pieces, or protection unless revealed or strongly implied by public actions.

Thesis

Zoraline, Cosmos Caller assembles an Orzhov midrange-tribal life engine that should win by turning creature density, life-gain/life-loss triggers, and attrition permanents into repeated pressure. Treat Zoraline, Cosmos Caller as the strategys center, then use Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Path of Ancestry, Three Tree City, and Bontu's Monument as likely tribal infrastructure when their legal text supports the line.

Prioritize stable mana, early board presence, and engine permanents before expensive single-card threats. The deck is not trying to race like a low-curve aggro deck, lock the table with prison pieces, or hold up permission indefinitely; it wants to establish small synergistic creatures, convert life swings into material or damage, and make combat awkward while incremental triggers accumulate.

Win by layering payoffs instead of relying on one deterministic combo. Exquisite Blood plus Sanguine Bond may represent a decisive life-loop if legal text and board state confirm the interaction, but the agent must not assume the loop is available, legal, or protected until the rules engine offers the exact actions and the visible stack shows the pieces resolving. Outside that line, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Lolth, Spider Queen, Regal Bloodlord, Mirkwood Bats, Essence Channeler, Darkstar Augur, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Lifecreed Duo, and Lunar Convocation look like the main cards that turn time, life movement, creatures, and sacrifice or token patterns into advantage. Card text check required for unfamiliar names before treating them as triggers, token makers, bats, clerics, or drain engines.

Protect the plan by spending interaction on cards that stop engines, break life-total leverage, or threaten commander recasts. Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, Starfall Invocation, Repel Calamity, Nameless Inversion, Sonar Strike, Early Winter, and Diresight should be evaluated as interaction or selection only from visible legal actions; do not reserve them for imagined targets or fire them at low-impact permanents when a lethal clock, combo piece, or commander-answering threat is present.

Role Package

  • Threats: Use Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Lolth, Spider Queen, Regal Bloodlord, Emeritus of Woe, Darkstar Augur, Momo, Friendly Flier, Momo, Playful Pet, Wolfbat, Blighted Bat, Deep-Cavern Bat, Flock Impostor, Glidedive Duo, Rooftop Percher, Three Tree Mascot, Moonstone Harbinger, Moonstone Eulogist, Moonrise Cleric, Star Charter, Starseer Mentor, Starscape Cleric, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Wax-Wane Witness, Changeling Wayfinder, and Mirkwood Bats as the creature and planeswalker pressure base. Commit threats in an order that keeps the commander relevant, preserves future tribal payoffs, and does not expose all engines to one visible sweeper or combat blowout.

  • Payoffs: Treat Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Bontu's Monument, Cleric Class, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Mirkwood Bats, Regal Bloodlord, Lunar Convocation, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Angel's Feather, Reaper's Talisman, Rug of Smothering, and Inspiring Leader as the life-swing and scaling payoff package when their text is confirmed. Prioritize payoffs that immediately trigger from available legal actions over payoffs that require a future turn with no current support.

  • Engines: Build around Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Path of Ancestry, Three Tree City, Bontu's Monument, Lunar Convocation, Darkstar Augur, Cleric Class, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, and Lolth, Spider Queen as persistent advantage sources. Sequence engines after enough mana and board presence exist to benefit from them, unless the legal board state shows that the engine itself is the only way to stabilize.

  • Velocity: Use Cruel Tutor, Painful Lesson, Stargaze, Diresight, Hazel's Nocturne, Starfall Invocation, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Fountainport Bell, Bender's Waterskin, Adventurer's Inn, Star Charter, Starseer Mentor, Starlit Soothsayer, and Hidden Grotto as potential card flow, selection, or setup tools. Card text check required for unfamiliar selection cards; choose lines that improve land drops, find engines, or locate interaction before speculative value.

  • Interaction: Spend Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, Repel Calamity, Nameless Inversion, Sonar Strike, Early Winter, Diresight, Deep-Cavern Bat, Blightbeetle, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Starfall Invocation, and Lolth, Spider Queen on visible threats that matter to survival or engine continuity. Prefer interaction that leaves a body, trigger, or life swing when the legal options are otherwise close.

  • Protection: Use Repel Calamity, Early Winter, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, Nameless Inversion, Sonar Strike, Reaper's Talisman, Cleric Class, Essence Channeler, Angel's Feather, and life-gain permanents as conditional protection for life total, combat posture, and key engines. Do not call them protection unless the rules engine exposes a prevention, removal, pump, lifegain, or defensive legal action.

  • Recursion: Treat Witch's Cottage, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Wax-Wane Witness, Emeritus of Woe, Moonstone Eulogist, and any graveyard-facing legal actions as the recursion or attrition module only after text confirmation. Preserve high-impact creatures in graveyard-aware lines when visible future actions can return or reuse them.

  • Mana: Keep Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Gathering Stone, Sinister Monolith, White Lotus Tile, White Auracite, Patchwork Banner, Path of Ancestry, Thriving Moor, Thriving Heath, Caves of Koilos, Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Hidden Grotto, Mudflat Village, Three Tree City, Firdoch Core, Forum of Amity, Lupinflower Village, Great Arashin City, Misty Palms Oasis, Adventurer's Inn, Abandoned Air Temple, Nesting Grounds, Witch's Cottage, Plains, and Swamp focused on casting black-white spells on curve. Prefer black access early unless the opening hand proves white cards are the immediate bottleneck.

  • Sideboard modules: No sideboard cards exist in the registered list. Do not suggest swaps, wish targets, or post-game replacement plans unless a future registration adds a legal sideboard.

Primary Win Conditions

  • Life-loop finish: Prioritize Exquisite Blood plus Sanguine Bond when both permanents can be assembled, protected long enough to matter, and the rules engine exposes a legal life-gain or life-loss event that can start the loop. Setup requires stable black-white mana, enough life to survive a full turn cycle if the table can answer the first piece, and preferably prior information from Deep-Cavern Bat, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, or visible opponent shields before committing the second piece. Execute only through legal actions and visible stack resolution; if the loop is not represented by engine output, treat the cards as separate drain payoffs rather than a deterministic win. Prioritize this path when racing is poor, creature combat is stalled, or a tutor/selection line such as Cruel Tutor, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Stargaze, Diresight, or Hazel's Nocturne can find the missing half. Disruption risk is high from removal, counterplay, and graveyard-independent answers, so do not expose both pieces into obvious open interaction unless waiting is worse.

  • Layered drain-and-lifegain finish: Use Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Mirkwood Bats, Bontu's Monument, Cleric Class, Angel's Feather, Reaper's Talisman, Rug of Smothering, Regal Bloodlord, Lunar Convocation, and Sanguine Bond as the main incremental-pressure shell when their legal text supports life movement, drains, tokens, or scaling threats. Setup by casting cheap creatures and payoff permanents before expensive finishers, then execute by taking legal actions that produce repeatable life swings without sacrificing board survival. Prioritize this line against fair creature decks and slower engines because it wins without needing one exact card pair. Card text check required for unfamiliar Bloomburrow/Universes-specific names before assuming trigger types, creature types, or token production.

  • Tribal board-pressure finish: Build a wide or evasive board with Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Path of Ancestry, Three Tree City, Inspiring Leader, Momo, Friendly Flier, Momo, Playful Pet, Wolfbat, Blighted Bat, Flock Impostor, Glidedive Duo, Rooftop Percher, Three Tree Mascot, Star Charter, Moonstone Harbinger, Moonstone Eulogist, Moonrise Cleric, and Changeling Wayfinder when legal text confirms the creature and tribal payoffs. Execute by attacking only when the visible board supports damage, lifelink, evasion, or favorable trades; hold back enough blockers when life-total leverage is the deck's route to winning. Prioritize this path when Exquisite Blood or Sanguine Bond is absent, opponents are light on sweepers, or Patchwork Banner and Maskwood Nexus make otherwise small bodies matter.

  • Attrition-finisher path: Let Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Lolth, Spider Queen, Darkstar Augur, Emeritus of Woe, Wax-Wane Witness, Witch's Cottage, Moonstone Eulogist, and Painful Lesson convert a long game into material advantage. Setup by trading resources, keeping recursion-relevant creatures identifiable, and preserving enough life for draw or sacrifice costs. Execute by forcing opponents to answer one persistent threat at a time rather than committing every payoff into a sweeper. Prioritize this line when opponents have broken up the drain engine or when visible hands/resources indicate the game will be decided by cards, not speed.

Secondary Win Conditions

  • Commander damage and evasive pressure become the fallback kill when Zoraline, Cosmos Caller or flying creatures can attack safely and life-drain engines are missing. Use Reaper's Talisman, Cleric Class, Essence Channeler, Inspiring Leader, Patchwork Banner, and Maskwood Nexus only as their legal actions support combat growth, lifegain, or tribal sizing. Do not force attacks into visible profitable blocks just to advance damage; the deck can win by making opponents spend removal on medium threats while drain pieces accumulate.

  • Removal-backed tempo wins are available when Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, Nameless Inversion, Sonar Strike, Repel Calamity, Early Winter, Starfall Invocation, and Lolth, Spider Queen clear the one blocker or threat that changes the race. Spend interaction to preserve a clock when the visible opponent board is light, but keep premium answers for commanders, combo engines, lifegain hate, or lethal attackers when behind. Starfall Invocation should be treated as a reset or swing card only if the engine exposes legal text and aftermath that actually improve your battlefield or survival.

  • Value-drain wins come from making every spell or creature replace itself, tax opponents, or trigger small life swings. Bontu's Monument, Rug of Smothering, Angel's Feather, Lunar Convocation, Starseer Mentor, Starscape Cleric, Darkstar Augur, Painful Lesson, Stargaze, Fountainport Bell, Bender's Waterskin, Adventurer's Inn, and Commander's Sphere should be used to keep resources moving when no decisive attack or combo is visible. Prioritize card flow over marginal damage when the hand is thin or land drops are uncertain.

  • Recursion and graveyard pressure can close games after removal-heavy exchanges if Witch's Cottage, Wax-Wane Witness, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Emeritus of Woe, or Moonstone Eulogist expose legal ways to reuse threats. Preserve the best graveyard target when recursion is visible; otherwise do not assume future recursion will exist. Nesting Grounds and other utility lands should be used only according to legal engine actions, not assumed as creature-land or combo pieces.

Emergency Lines

  • Behind on life: Stabilize before engines by using Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, Repel Calamity, Nameless Inversion, Sonar Strike, Early Winter, Starfall Invocation, blockers, and confirmed lifegain actions from Cleric Class, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Angel's Feather, Reaper's Talisman, Starscape Cleric, or Zoraline, Cosmos Caller. Avoid Painful Lesson, Darkstar Augur costs, Caves of Koilos pain, or other life payments unless they find survival or immediately change the race.

  • Behind on board: Trade creatures and spend sweepers/removal to survive the next combat step before casting slow payoffs. Starfall Invocation, Lolth, Spider Queen, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, and Nameless Inversion should answer the threat that creates lethal pressure or invalidates blocks. Do not protect small synergy pieces over life total when visible attacks would end the game.

  • Behind on cards: Shift into velocity and resilient permanents with Painful Lesson, Stargaze, Diresight, Hazel's Nocturne, Cruel Tutor, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Fountainport Bell, Commander's Sphere, Mind Stone, Darkstar Augur, Lolth, Spider Queen, and recursion lines. Choose selection targets that restore mana, removal, or a payoff already supported by board state rather than speculative combo pieces.

  • Behind on mana: Prioritize land drops, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Gathering Stone, Sinister Monolith, White Lotus Tile, White Auracite, Patchwork Banner, and color-fixing lands before expensive threats. Keep black access for removal and drain engines unless visible white spells are the bottleneck. Do not keep mana rocks in hand to conceal information if casting them unlocks future legal actions.

  • Engines removed or combo broken: Rebuild through tribal pressure, commander recast, recursion, and attrition instead of chasing the missing piece blindly. If Exquisite Blood or Sanguine Bond is gone, treat the remaining half as a fair payoff and pivot to Mirkwood Bats, Regal Bloodlord, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Lolth, Spider Queen, creature attacks, and repeated lifegain/drain triggers.

  • Graveyard or recursion denied: Stop valuing graveyard setup and win from battlefield permanence, hand resources, and command-zone access. Use Wax-Wane Witness, Witch's Cottage, Emeritus of Woe, and Moonstone Eulogist only if legal actions still work under the visible hate effect. When uncertain, ask the engine through available legal choices rather than assuming recursion is live.

Resource Model

  • Life is both shield and engine fuel, so spend it only when the legal action stabilizes, finds a needed card, or turns on a decisive drain/lifegain loop. Treat Caves of Koilos, Painful Lesson, Darkstar Augur, and any exposed life-payment text as risky when under pressure; treat Angel's Feather, Cleric Class, Lifecreed Duo, Essence Channeler, Starscape Cleric, Reaper's Talisman, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, and Zoraline, Cosmos Caller as conditional ways to convert life changes into inevitability when the engine confirms their text.

  • Hand size is the deck's main protection against singleton inconsistency, so preserve flexible cards until the board asks a clear question. Use Painful Lesson, Stargaze, Diresight, Hazel's Nocturne, Fountainport Bell, Commander's Sphere, Mind Stone, Darkstar Augur, Lolth, Spider Queen, Cruel Tutor, and Moon-Blessed Cleric to restore velocity or select a missing piece, but do not cash selection into a slow payoff when removal, mana, or survival is the immediate bottleneck.

  • Mana converts directly into pressure because the deck wants to double-spell cheap creatures, hold removal, and still develop engines. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, Gathering Stone, Sinister Monolith, White Lotus Tile, White Auracite, Bender's Waterskin, and Adventurer's Inn should be deployed early when they unlock future black-white sequencing; Card text check required for the nonstandard mana artifacts before assuming color, tapping, or sacrifice details.

  • Board material is a renewable midrange resource, not just damage. Preserve creature density for Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Inspiring Leader, Starseer Mentor, Regal Bloodlord, Mirkwood Bats, and Bontu's Monument when legal text rewards creature type, casting, death, or lifegain triggers. Trade small bodies only when the trade protects life, planeswalkers, or a higher-value engine.

  • Graveyard resources matter only when a visible legal action uses them. Witch's Cottage, Wax-Wane Witness, Moonstone Eulogist, Emeritus of Woe, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, and any recursion-like prompt should target the card that restores the current plan: removal when dying, engine when stable, threat when opponents are empty. Do not mill, discard, or sacrifice material merely because recursion might appear later.

  • Exile is a tracked zone, not a default resource. Use play-from-exile or return-from-exile prompts only when the engine exposes legal actions, and never assume Momo, Friendly Flier, Momo, Playful Pet, Early Winter, or any other card grants access without rules text in the prompt.

  • Sacrifice fodder should be spent only for explicit payoff. Tokens or expendable creatures can feed Lolth, Spider Queen, Consumed by Greed, Mirkwood Bats, Bontu's Monument, or other visible sacrifice/death prompts if the resulting card, removal, drain, or board state beats keeping a blocker. Do not sacrifice the only tribal enabler, lifegain piece, or evasive clock unless survival or lethal requires it.

  • Tempo is gained by sequencing taplands, rocks, and cheap interaction so turns do not pass with unused mana. Against fast boards, favor Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Nameless Inversion, Sonar Strike, Repel Calamity, Early Winter, and Starfall Invocation over slow engines. Against slow boards, spend early turns on mana and engines so later turns can combine removal plus development.

  • Information is strongest when converted into exact choices. Deep-Cavern Bat, Cruel Tutor, Diresight, Hazel's Nocturne, Stargaze, Moon-Blessed Cleric, and any reveal or selection prompt should update the plan using visible cards only. No hidden card should be named as present unless revealed by the engine.

  • Sideboard bullets do not exist for this registered list. Sideboard count is 0, so all matchup adaptation must come from maindeck role shifts, commander recasts, mulligans, and in-game selection rather than sideboard cards.

Mana Guide

  • Keep hands that can produce black and white on time, plus at least two functional mana sources or one land with Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, or another confirmed mana artifact. Ship hands that rely on an unconfirmed utility card for colored mana, cannot cast early black interaction, or cannot reach Zoraline, Cosmos Caller and the midgame engines without drawing multiple lands.

  • Prioritize black access because the deck's removal, drain, card flow, and attrition cards are heavily black. Swamp, Thriving Moor, Caves of Koilos, Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Path of Ancestry, Mudflat Village, Hidden Grotto, and color-producing artifacts should be sequenced to keep Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, Nameless Inversion, Painful Lesson, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Mirkwood Bats, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, and Lolth, Spider Queen castable when legal.

  • Preserve white access for commander, support, and removal turns. Plains, Thriving Heath, Caves of Koilos, Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Path of Ancestry, Great Arashin City, Lupinflower Village, Misty Palms Oasis, Forum of Amity, and fixing artifacts should support Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Cleric Class, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Starfall Invocation, Repel Calamity, Sonar Strike, Lifecreed Duo, Essence Channeler, and other white prompts. Card text check required for nonstandard lands before assuming their colors or conditions.

  • Play tapped or conditional lands early when the hand already has a next-turn play. Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Path of Ancestry, Thriving Moor, Thriving Heath, Witch's Cottage, Hidden Grotto, Nesting Grounds, Three Tree City, Mudflat Village, Great Arashin City, Lupinflower Village, Misty Palms Oasis, Abandoned Air Temple, and Firdoch Core should be sequenced by visible tapped status and color needs, not by name recognition.

  • Play the land before drawing when you already know the required land drop and need mana for the current legal sequence. Delay the land until after Painful Lesson, Stargaze, Diresight, Hazel's Nocturne, Fountainport Bell, or a tutor/selection action when the draw or selection can change which color, tapped land, utility land, or basic you should commit.

  • Spend pain or utility mana only when the life or opportunity cost is justified by the current turn. Caves of Koilos damage, utility-land activation, and artifact sacrifice should be avoided when a painless source casts the same spell or when holding the resource enables a stronger next-turn line.

  • Sequence mana rocks before expensive payoffs unless the board demands interaction now. A turn spent casting Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, Gathering Stone, Sinister Monolith, White Lotus Tile, or White Auracite is correct when it turns later Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Starfall Invocation, Maskwood Nexus, or Lolth, Spider Queen into legal two-action turns; it is wrong when lethal pressure requires removal first.

Mulligan Guide

  • Strong keep: keep two or three lands with black and white access plus Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Patchwork Banner, or Commander's Sphere and one early stabilizer such as Deep-Cavern Bat, Starscape Cleric, Lifecreed Duo, Essence Channeler, Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, or Nameless Inversion. This hand develops mana, preserves life, and reaches Zoraline, Cosmos Caller or a midgame engine without needing perfect draws.

  • Strong keep: keep a hand with Swamp, a white source, cheap interaction, and a payoff curve of Bontu's Monument, Starseer Mentor, Moonstone Harbinger, Regal Bloodlord, Maskwood Nexus, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, or Lolth, Spider Queen when the early plays are legal. Card text check required before assuming any nonstandard payoff trigger, but this shell wants early black-white functionality plus one durable engine.

  • Medium keep: keep three lands and a slow engine such as Cleric Class, Maskwood Nexus, Lunar Convocation, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, or Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal only if the hand also casts at least one early creature, tutor, removal spell, or mana rock. A hand that waits until turn four to affect the game is acceptable on the play only against slow visible opposition or unknown pods with low early pressure.

  • Risky keep: treat one-land Sol Ring hands as risky unless the hand has multiple cheap legal plays and a selection piece such as Diresight, Stargaze, Cruel Tutor, Fountainport Bell, or Moon-Blessed Cleric that can find a stabilizing next step. Ship the hand if the only colored source is missing, if white access is required for Zoraline, Cosmos Caller soon, or if the draw must hit two specific lands.

  • Automatic ship: ship hands with no lands, one land and no Sol Ring or confirmed mana rock, all lands and no relevant spell, no black source with black interaction stranded, no white source with commander/support cards stranded, or only expensive cards such as Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Starfall Invocation, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, and Lolth, Spider Queen. Also ship hands that rely on Card text check required lands or artifacts as the only colored source.

  • Matchup-dependent keep: keep removal-heavy hands with Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Repel Calamity, Sonar Strike, Early Winter, Nameless Inversion, or Starfall Invocation against fast creature starts. Keep engine-heavy hands with Deep-Cavern Bat, Cruel Tutor, Diresight, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Maskwood Nexus, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Lunar Convocation, or Lolth, Spider Queen against slower boards where time and information matter more than immediate life total.

  • Play/draw adjustment: on the play, prefer proactive mana plus creature development so Zoraline, Cosmos Caller and tribal engines arrive before opponents are fully shielded. On the draw, value cheap removal, discard-like information, lifegain bodies, and untapped black mana more highly because the first opposing threat may demand an answer before a mana rock or slow enchantment.

  • Trap hand: do not keep a lifegain-payoff hand with Angel's Feather, Cleric Class, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Regal Bloodlord, or Essence Channeler if it lacks early creatures, removal, or enough mana to survive. Do not keep a tribal hand with Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Inspiring Leader, or Three Tree City if it has no early bodies and cannot cast Zoraline, Cosmos Caller.

Turn Arc

  • Turn 1: prioritize untapped black or white access and deploy Sol Ring when legal because it changes the whole curve. If no Sol Ring exists, play tapped fixing such as Scoured Barrens, Path of Ancestry, Thriving Moor, Thriving Heath, Shattered Sanctum, or Witch's Cottage early when it does not block a turn-two play; Card text check required for nonstandard lands before assuming tapped status or colors. Cast Cleric Class, Angel's Feather, Adventurer's Inn, Fountainport Bell, or a cheap selection spell only when the legal text advances mana, life, or setup more than holding interaction.

  • Turn 2: develop fixing with Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Patchwork Banner, Bender's Waterskin, White Lotus Tile, White Auracite, or other confirmed mana artifacts when the board is not threatening. Deviate to Deep-Cavern Bat, Starscape Cleric, Lifecreed Duo, Blighted Bat, Moonrise Cleric, Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Nameless Inversion, or Sonar Strike when an opponent's visible creature, engine, or pressure source must be contained.

  • Turn 3: cast Zoraline, Cosmos Caller when the commander is legal, protected by board context, and likely to create lifegain, recursion, or combat pressure on later turns; Card text check required for exact commander triggers. Deviate to Starseer Mentor, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Darkstar Augur, Diresight, Painful Lesson, Cruel Tutor, or Commander's Sphere when the hand needs cards, a specific engine, or mana before committing the commander.

  • Turns 4-5: commit one major engine only when the current board does not demand removal first. Preferred engines include Maskwood Nexus, Bontu's Monument, Lunar Convocation, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Regal Bloodlord, Mirkwood Bats, Lolth, Spider Queen, or Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal; Card text check required for exact nonstandard triggers. If behind, use Starfall Invocation, Consumed by Greed, Feed the Cycle, Repel Calamity, Early Winter, Nameless Inversion, or Nocturnal Hunger before spending mana on slow value.

  • Late game: convert mana and board material into commander recasts, recursion, selection, and drain pressure rather than empty attacks. Use Witch's Cottage, Wax-Wane Witness, Moonstone Eulogist, Emeritus of Woe, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Cruel Tutor, Stargaze, Diresight, and visible graveyard prompts to recover the exact missing role: removal when dying, engine when stable, threat when opponents are low on resources. Preserve life when Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Cleric Class, Essence Channeler, Regal Bloodlord, and Zoraline, Cosmos Caller make life total part of both offense and survival.

Card Roles

  • Commander anchor: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller is the deck's central pressure, lifegain, and recursion card, so cast it when black-white mana can support follow-up choices and the board is not asking for immediate removal. Use attacks with Bat creatures to turn life gain into resources for recursion and drain engines; Card text check required before assuming exact trigger timing, target limits, or finality-counter behavior.

  • Early Bat package: Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Blighted Bat, Deep-Cavern Bat, Flock Impostor, Moonrise Cleric, Rooftop Percher, Glidedive Duo, Three Tree Mascot, Wolfbat, Moonstone Harbinger, and Momo, Playful Pet give the deck bodies that enable tribal pressure and Zoraline, Cosmos Caller attacks. Prioritize these before slow enchantments when facing early aggression; hold them only when a sweeper, discard effect, or removal target is clearly more important.

  • Lifegain payoffs: Cleric Class, Angel's Feather, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Starscape Cleric, Regal Bloodlord, and Starseer Mentor convert repeated life events into board size, damage, or resilience. Do not keep or sequence these as standalone win conditions unless visible board state shows time to develop; they are strongest when paired with Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, evasive Bats, Exquisite Blood, or Sanguine Bond.

  • Drain and life-loop threats: Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond are high-priority engines, but commit them only when mana, life total, and board state allow a slow enchantment turn. If both are visible or one can be found, evaluate whether opponents have open interaction, lethal pressure, or enchantment removal before tapping out; do not claim a deterministic combo unless the rules engine exposes legal triggers and the visible stack confirms the outcome.

  • Tribal enablers: Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Three Tree City, Path of Ancestry, Inspiring Leader, Changeling Wayfinder, and Bontu's Monument support the creature-type plan. Deploy Maskwood Nexus or Patchwork Banner when the hand has several creatures or Zoraline, Cosmos Caller needs more Bat density; avoid spending a turn on tribal infrastructure when removal or blocking is required to survive.

  • Mana acceleration: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, Bender's Waterskin, White Lotus Tile, White Auracite, Sinister Monolith, Gathering Stone, and Star Charter should be used to reach commander recasts, large engines, and multi-spell turns. Card text check required for nonstandard mana artifacts; never rely on a rock for colored mana unless the legal action text or visible mana summary confirms it.

  • Selection and tutor tools: Cruel Tutor, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Diresight, Stargaze, Fountainport Bell, Star Charter, Adventurer's Inn, and Hidden Grotto should find the missing role, not a generic powerful card. Search for removal when dying, a mana source when constrained, Exquisite Blood or Sanguine Bond when stable, Maskwood Nexus or Patchwork Banner when creature density matters, and a recursion or draw piece when the game is grinding; Card text check required for unfamiliar selection cards before assuming card type, zone, or timing.

  • Removal suite: Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Nameless Inversion, Repel Calamity, Sonar Strike, Early Winter, Consumed by Greed, Starfall Invocation, and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal answer pressure or engines. Spend cheap removal on commanders, combo creatures, evasive threats, and creatures that will invalidate lifegain racing; save Starfall Invocation for boards where multiple opposing creatures matter more than preserving small tribal bodies.

  • Recursion and grind: Witch's Cottage, Wax-Wane Witness, Moonstone Eulogist, Emeritus of Woe, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, and possibly Consumed by Greed let the deck reuse cheap permanents or recover after trades. Choose recursion targets by current need: Deep-Cavern Bat or interaction for disruption, lifegain payoffs for engine turns, and evasive Bats for pressure; Card text check required before assuming exact graveyard access.

  • Card advantage engines: Darkstar Augur, Painful Lesson, Lolth, Spider Queen, Lunar Convocation, Diresight, Stargaze, Commander's Sphere, Mind Stone, and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal help refill. Use draw when stable or when holding answers; against lethal pressure, prefer removal, blockers, or lifegain before spending mana and life on cards.

  • Combat equipment and attack modifiers: Reaper's Talisman, Inspiring Leader, Patchwork Banner, Rug of Smothering, and Cleric Class can make small evasive creatures matter. Put pressure on planeswalkers and low-life opponents with flying Bats, but do not attack away necessary blockers under a short clock; Card text check required for Rug of Smothering and Inspiring Leader before assuming their exact combat effect.

  • Planeswalker and top-end threats: Lolth, Spider Queen and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal are late-game stabilizers or attrition engines. Cast them after forcing opponents to spend removal, after a board wipe, or when visible attackers cannot immediately remove them; do not treat either as protection against an already lethal board unless legal actions show a defensive effect.

  • Utility and unclear role cards: Momo, Friendly Flier, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Emeritus of Woe, Hazel's Nocturne, Early Winter, Star Charter, Adventurer's Inn, Firdoch Core, Forum of Amity, Great Arashin City, Misty Palms Oasis, Lupinflower Village, Mudflat Village, Abandoned Air Temple, and Fountainport Bell require card text verification at runtime before strategic assumptions. Use legal action labels to classify them as mana, selection, removal, creature pressure, or value, then follow the corresponding role rule rather than inventing hidden functionality.

  • Hate and narrow cards: Blightbeetle, Rug of Smothering, Repel Calamity, Feed the Cycle, and possibly Nocturnal Hunger should be evaluated against visible opposing permanents and action text. Do not spend narrow interaction into low-impact targets just to use mana; hold it when opponents present no matching threat and develop a Bat, mana rock, or selection play instead.

  • Land roles: Plains and Swamp provide the cleanest mana, while Caves of Koilos, Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Thriving Moor, Thriving Heath, Path of Ancestry, Witch's Cottage, Nesting Grounds, Three Tree City, Hidden Grotto, Mudflat Village, Lupinflower Village, Great Arashin City, Forum of Amity, Misty Palms Oasis, Abandoned Air Temple, and Firdoch Core supply fixing or utility. Lead with tapped or conditional lands early when doing so preserves turns two and three; Card text check required for utility lands before using them as colored sources or activated abilities.

Card Hover Notes

Zoraline, Cosmos Caller

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, commander and core engine piece.
  • Role type: engine piece; recursion; lifegain/stabilization; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Attack with Bats to gain life, then use Zoraline entering or attacking to pay {W}{B} and 2 life to return a mana value 3 or less nonland permanent from your graveyard.
  • Timing: Cast when she can attack safely, stabilize with vigilance, or immediately threaten a recursion trigger; delay if commander tax consumes removal mana under visible pressure.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}{B}, 2 life, and a graveyard target; produces a battlefield permanent with a finality counter and repeated Bat-attack lifegain.
  • Partners / packages: Recursion targets include Starscape Cleric, Deep-Cavern Bat, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Lunar Convocation, Bontu's Monument, Reaper's Talisman, Patchwork Banner, Mind Stone, and Arcane Signet.
  • Role peers: Moseo, Vein's New Dean and Cleric Class also return creatures; Witch's Cottage and Mudflat Village return cards to hand or library instead of battlefield.
  • Failure modes: Do not return a creature likely to die immediately unless the finality-counter exile is acceptable.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against removal-heavy and attrition decks; weaker when Rest in Peace-like effects or graveyard exile blank the target pool.

Plains

  • Deck role: Main deck, 4 copies, basic mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides clean {W} for Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Cleric Class, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Starfall Invocation, Repel Calamity, Sonar Strike, and sideboard white interaction.
  • Timing: Prioritize early when the hand has white one- and two-mana plays or needs Zoraline by turn three.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for {W}; supplies the Plains condition for Great Arashin City and can be found by Changeling Wayfinder or Fountainport Bell.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Abandoned Air Temple's basic-land check, Great Arashin City's Forest-or-Plains check, and Shattered Sanctum's later untapped sequencing.
  • Role peers: Thriving Heath, Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Caves of Koilos, Path of Ancestry, Forum of Amity, and Misty Palms Oasis provide white with conditions.
  • Failure modes: Plains alone strands black-heavy interaction and drain engines.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Keep hands with Plains only when black access or black fixing is also present.

Swamp

  • Deck role: Main deck, 14 copies, primary basic mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides reliable {B} for the deck's removal, tutors, card flow, Bat creatures, drain engines, and commander costs.
  • Timing: Lead on Swamp when the hand contains Feed the Cycle, Nameless Inversion, Starscape Cleric, Deep-Cavern Bat, Painful Lesson, Diresight, or Cruel Tutor.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for {B}; enables Witch's Cottage to enter untapped when you control three or more other Swamps.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Witch's Cottage recursion, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Lolth, Spider Queen, and sideboard Dauthi Voidwalker.
  • Role peers: Thriving Moor, Caves of Koilos, Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Path of Ancestry, Great Arashin City, Forum of Amity, and Mudflat Village provide black with restrictions or costs.
  • Failure modes: Swamp-heavy hands can fail to cast white support and Zoraline on curve.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Prioritize Swamp against fast creature decks because most cheap removal is black.

Cleric Class

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core lifegain payoff and late recursion engine.
  • Role type: engine payoff; lifegain/stabilization; recursion.
  • Deck-specific job: Adds 1 to each life-gain event, turns repeated lifegain into +1/+1 counters at level 2, and reanimates a creature at level 3.
  • Timing: Cast early when lifegain from Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Lifecreed Duo, Deep-Cavern Bat, Reaper's Talisman, Glidedive Duo, or Lunar Convocation is likely; level only when mana is not needed for removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}, then {3}{W} and {4}{W}; outputs extra life, +1/+1 counters, a returned creature, and life equal to that creature's toughness.
  • Mode map: Level 1 improves lifegain; Level 2 is sorcery-speed setup for counters; Level 3 is a sorcery-speed rebuild tool for a high-impact creature such as Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Regal Bloodlord, or Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal.
  • Partners / packages: Exact lifegain partners include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Lifecreed Duo, Essence Channeler, Starscape Cleric, Reaper's Talisman, Glidedive Duo, and Sanguine Bond.
  • Role peers: Moseo, Vein's New Dean and Zoraline, Cosmos Caller recur creatures or permanents; Essence Channeler also converts lifegain into counters.
  • Failure modes: Leveling while behind can spend a whole turn without answering lethal pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in attrition and lifegain mirrors; slower against combo unless it is already enabling a fast Sanguine Bond line.

Maskwood Nexus

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core tribal infrastructure.
  • Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Makes your creatures, creature spells, and creature cards you own outside the battlefield every creature type, turning non-Bats into Zoraline attack lifegain sources and improving type-based mana and selection.
  • Timing: Cast when you already have or can soon cast multiple creatures; delay if spending four mana leaves you dead to attackers or unable to answer an engine.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes four mana; outputs global creature-type coverage and can spend {3}, {T} to make a 2/2 blue Shapeshifter creature token with changeling.
  • Mode map: Static type-setting enables Zoraline, Path of Ancestry, Gathering Stone, Patchwork Banner, Three Tree City, White Lotus Tile, and Lupinflower Village; activated token creation gives a Bat/Cleric-style attacker or blocker.
  • Partners / packages: Exact payoffs include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Patchwork Banner, Three Tree City, Path of Ancestry, White Lotus Tile, Gathering Stone, and Mirkwood Bats.
  • Role peers: Patchwork Banner, Gathering Stone, Three Tree City, and changeling cards overlap on creature-type support but do not globally rewrite types.
  • Failure modes: A four-mana setup artifact with no board can be too slow.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against fair boards where repeated small fliers and type payoffs matter.

Witch's Cottage

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, utility Swamp and delayed recursion slot.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; recursion.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {B}, and if it enters untapped while you control three or more other Swamps, it can put a target creature card from your graveyard on top of your library.
  • Timing: Do not play early if you can wait to satisfy the three-other-Swamps condition and have a valuable creature in the graveyard.
  • Inputs / outputs: Produces {B}; consumes the land drop and the next draw step if you choose the graveyard creature.
  • Mode map: Early mode is a tapped/untapped black land; recursion mode sets up the next draw for Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Deep-Cavern Bat, Regal Bloodlord, Mirkwood Bats, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, or another needed creature.
  • Partners / packages: Exact high-value top targets include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Deep-Cavern Bat, Essence Channeler, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Regal Bloodlord, and Mirkwood Bats.
  • Role peers: Mudflat Village returns Bat/Lizard/Rat/Squirrel cards to hand; Hazel's Nocturne returns up to two creature cards to hand.
  • Failure modes: Playing it before the condition is met loses the recursion trigger.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in grindy games; weak into graveyard exile or when you need untapped mana immediately.

Starscape Cleric

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core drain payoff and evasive Bat body.
  • Role type: mechanic payoff; lifegain/stabilization; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Turns every life-gain event into each opponent losing 1 life while also attacking as a flying Bat for Zoraline.
  • Timing: Cast early when lifegain triggers are already present or likely; pay Offspring {2}{B} when extra drain bodies are better than holding removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B}, optionally {2}{B}; outputs flying pressure and drain from life gain.
  • Mode map: Normal cast is the efficient engine piece; Offspring creates a 1/1 token copy when you can afford the extra mana and want redundant drain.
  • Partners / packages: Exact lifegain sources include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Cleric Class, Lifecreed Duo, Angel's Feather, Reaper's Talisman, Glidedive Duo, Lunar Convocation, and Exquisite Blood.
  • Role peers: Sanguine Bond drains from life gain at larger scale; Starseer Mentor and Lunar Convocation also punish opponents after life changes.
  • Failure modes: This creature can't block, so it does not stabilize combat by itself.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against slow pods and stalled boards; risky against fast attackers if you need blockers.

Starseer Mentor

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, midgame Bat pressure and attrition payoff.
  • Role type: threat/clock; mechanic payoff; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides a 3/5 flying vigilance body and pressures a target opponent at end step if you gained or lost life that turn.
  • Timing: Cast after mana is stable; it is strongest when Zoraline, Caves of Koilos, Lunar Convocation, Painful Lesson, or combat lifegain can guarantee the end-step trigger.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{W}{B}; outputs evasive vigilance pressure and a target-opponent choice between losing 3 life, sacrificing a nonland permanent of their choice, or discarding a card.
  • Partners / packages: Exact life-change enablers include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Cleric Class, Deep-Cavern Bat, Reaper's Talisman, Lunar Convocation, Caves of Koilos, and Sinister Monolith.
  • Role peers: Lunar Convocation and Starlit Soothsayer also care about gained or lost life this turn; Regal Bloodlord cares about gaining life.
  • Failure modes: The opponent chooses sacrifice or discard if they prefer it, so do not assume it is always 3 damage.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus low-resource opponents; less reliable against token decks with expendable nonland permanents.

Angel's Feather

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, low-cost lifegain trigger artifact.
  • Role type: lifegain/stabilization; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Gains 1 life whenever any player casts a white spell, feeding Cleric Class, Essence Channeler, Starscape Cleric, Sanguine Bond, and Lunar Convocation.
  • Timing: Play early against white-heavy tables or when your hand contains multiple white spells; deprioritize if no white spells are visible and board presence matters more.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes two mana; outputs optional 1-life increments from white spells.
  • Partners / packages: Your exact white trigger sources include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Cleric Class, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Repel Calamity, Sonar Strike, Starfall Invocation, and White Auracite.
  • Role peers: Lifecreed Duo, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Reaper's Talisman, and Glidedive Duo also provide repeatable or immediate lifegain.
  • Failure modes: Does nothing if neither you nor opponents cast white spells; do not keep a weak hand just because this is cheap.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in white mirrors and burn races; easy cut when sideboarding for graveyard or fast combo pressure.

Adventurer's Inn

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, utility land and small lifegain resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: Enters to gain 2 life and then taps for {C}, giving a life-change event without costing a spell slot.
  • Timing: Play when the life gain turns on Lunar Convocation, Starseer Mentor, Starlit Soothsayer, Wax-Wane Witness, Moonstone Harbinger, or Regal Bloodlord; avoid relying on it for colored costs.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes a land drop; outputs 2 life and colorless mana.
  • Partners / packages: Exact life-change payoffs include Lunar Convocation, Starseer Mentor, Starlit Soothsayer, Wax-Wane Witness, Moonstone Harbinger, Regal Bloodlord, Essence Channeler, and Sanguine Bond.
  • Role peers: Scoured Barrens and Glidedive Duo also create immediate lifegain; Hidden Grotto and Nesting Grounds are utility lands with different outputs.
  • Failure modes: It does not provide {W} or {B}, so color-heavy hands can stumble.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Useful against burn and aggro when a small life bump changes the race.

Exquisite Blood

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core drain engine and combo half.
  • Role type: combo enabler; combo finisher; lifegain/stabilization; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Whenever an opponent loses life, you gain that much life, converting attacks and drain triggers into lifegain triggers.
  • Timing: Cast when you can survive the tempo loss or when Sanguine Bond, Starscape Cleric, Mirkwood Bats, Sinister Monolith, Glidedive Duo, or combat damage can immediately start life movement.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {4}{B}; outputs lifegain equal to opponent life loss.
  • Partners / packages: True combo with Sanguine Bond: opponent loses life, Exquisite Blood gains you life, Sanguine Bond makes target opponent lose that much life, repeating while triggers resolve legally.
  • Role peers: Cleric Class, Angel's Feather, Lifecreed Duo, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, and Reaper's Talisman are fair lifegain sources; Sanguine Bond is the direct combo peer.
  • Failure modes: Does not do anything until an opponent loses life; vulnerable to enchantment removal before the first trigger.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Prioritize in stalled creature games and life races; delay against open control mana unless immediate triggers are ready.

Darkstar Augur

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, Bat card-advantage engine and flying threat.
  • Role type: engine piece; threat/clock; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Draws extra material each upkeep by revealing the top card and putting it into hand, while losing life equal to its mana value.
  • Timing: Cast when your life total can absorb variable losses or when top-card control from Starlit Soothsayer, Diresight, Hidden Grotto, or Path of Ancestry can reduce risk.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{B}, optionally {B} for Offspring; outputs cards to hand, life loss, and flying Bat bodies.
  • Mode map: Normal cast gives one upkeep trigger; Offspring creates a 1/1 token copy for extra flying pressure and extra upkeep risk.
  • Partners / packages: Exact top-card setup includes Starlit Soothsayer, Diresight, Hidden Grotto, Forum of Amity, Path of Ancestry, and Fountainport Bell.
  • Role peers: Painful Lesson, Diresight, Stargaze, Lolth, Spider Queen, Lunar Convocation, Mind Stone, and Commander's Sphere also provide cards with different costs.
  • Failure modes: Revealing expensive cards such as Starfall Invocation, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Exquisite Blood, or Sanguine Bond can punish low life totals.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control and attrition; dangerous against burn or fast evasive damage.

Diresight

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, card-flow and graveyard setup spell.
  • Role type: card selection; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Surveil 2, then draw two cards and lose 2 life, smoothing draws while stocking graveyard targets for Zoraline and other recursion.
  • Timing: Cast before land drop when it can find a needed source; delay if paying three mana and 2 life leaves you unable to answer lethal pressure.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{B} and 2 life; outputs two drawn cards and chosen graveyard/top-library placement from surveil.
  • Partners / packages: Exact graveyard users include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Hazel's Nocturne, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Mudflat Village, Witch's Cottage, Wolfbat, and Feed the Cycle.
  • Role peers: Stargaze looks deeper but puts cards into hand rather than drawing; Painful Lesson draws two without surveil; Starlit Soothsayer surveils more slowly.
  • Failure modes: Do not mill a needed land, removal spell, or combo half unless a recursion line is already visible.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in slow games; risky when life total and board are already under attack.

Emeritus of Woe

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, prepared tutor creature and large attrition body.
  • Role type: tutor/search; threat/clock; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Enters prepared, letting you cast a copy of its Demonic Tutor spell to search your library for any card, put it into hand, then shuffle.
  • Timing: Use the tutor copy when the missing card changes the next turn cycle; hold only if the current board already demands immediate blocking or removal mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{B} for a 5/4 body or prepared access to a {1}{B} Demonic Tutor copy; outputs any chosen card to hand.
  • Mode map: Creature aspect is a 5/4 prepared threat; Demonic Tutor aspect finds the exact missing card; end-step reprepare requires two or more creatures to have died that turn.
  • Partners / packages: Tutor targets include Starfall Invocation for wide boards, Feed the Cycle or Nocturnal Hunger for one threat, Exquisite Blood or Sanguine Bond for combo, and Sol Ring or Shattered Sanctum if mana is failing.
  • Role peers: Cruel Tutor finds any card but puts it on top and costs 2 life; Moon-Blessed Cleric finds only enchantments.
  • Failure modes: Card Reference lacks a single combined Oracle line, so rely on the provided face text and do not infer extra prepared rules beyond it.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in singleton Commander when one answer or engine decides the game.

Lolth, Spider Queen

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, planeswalker card engine and token stabilizer.
  • Role type: engine piece; engine payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Converts creature deaths into loyalty, draws cards for 1 life, makes two menace/reach Spider tokens, and threatens an emblem that turns combat damage into large life loss.
  • Timing: Cast after combat is stable or when the -3 Spider tokens protect you immediately.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{B}{B}; outputs cards, life loss, Spider tokens, loyalty, and a combat-damage emblem if it reaches -8.
  • Mode map: 0 draws a card and loses 1 life; -3 creates two 2/1 black Spiders with menace and reach; -8 gives the combat-damage emblem.
  • Partners / packages: Exact death/token partners include Mirkwood Bats, Inspiring Leader, Starfall Invocation, Lifecreed Duo, and Regal Bloodlord.
  • Role peers: Darkstar Augur and Painful Lesson draw cards; Regal Bloodlord and Lunar Convocation make flying Bat tokens instead.
  • Failure modes: Do not cast into attackers that can remove Lolth before it generates value unless the Spider tokens change combat.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against midrange and removal-heavy boards; slower against combo.

Mind Stone

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, early ramp and late card conversion.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Accelerates from two mana to four and later sacrifices to draw when mana is no longer the bottleneck.
  • Timing: Cast early unless immediate removal or a lifegain body is needed; cash in only when the card is worth more than the mana source.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for {C}; {1}, {T}, sacrifice draws a card.
  • Mode map: Mana mode ramps colorless costs such as Maskwood Nexus, Sol Ring follow-ups, Reaper's Talisman equip, and Starfall Invocation generic costs; draw mode fuels Wolfbat's second-card trigger and refills after sweepers.
  • Partners / packages: Exact sacrifice/artifact partners include Moonstone Eulogist, Mirkwood Bats only if sacrificing a token is involved elsewhere, and Zoraline can return Mind Stone because its mana value is 2.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet and Commander's Sphere fix colors; Fountainport Bell also turns into a draw.
  • Failure modes: It does not make {W} or {B}.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Keep against big-mana and control; weaker when fast aggro demands colored interaction.

Thriving Moor

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped black fixing land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Enters tapped, chooses a color other than black, and then taps for {B} or the chosen color; in this deck the usual chosen color is white.
  • Timing: Play early when a tapped land does not block turn-two interaction or turn-three Zoraline.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes a land drop and tempo; outputs black or chosen-color mana.
  • Mode map: Choose white when the hand needs Zoraline, Cleric Class, Essence Channeler, or Starfall Invocation; choose another color only if a rules prompt or unusual sideboard requirement actually justifies it.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Sanguine Bond, Feed the Cycle, and sideboard Anguished Unmaking when white is chosen.
  • Role peers: Thriving Heath mirrors the choice from white; Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Caves of Koilos, Path of Ancestry, and Forum of Amity provide both Orzhov colors.
  • Failure modes: The tapped entry can cost a critical removal window.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in opening hands with early black plays already covered.

Early Winter

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flexible instant answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Either exiles target creature or makes target opponent exile an enchantment they control.
  • Timing: Hold for a commander, lifelink/evasive threat, combo creature, or high-impact enchantment; use earlier only if waiting risks lethal or engine collapse.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {4}{B}; outputs creature exile or an opponent-chosen enchantment exile from the targeted opponent.
  • Mode map: Creature mode targets and exiles a creature; enchantment mode targets an opponent, and that opponent exiles an enchantment they control, so it is weaker when they have expendable enchantments.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Nameless Inversion, Repel Calamity, Sonar Strike, Vindicate, and Anguished Unmaking.
  • Role peers: Anguished Unmaking is cheaper post-board for nonland permanents but costs 3 life; Vindicate is broader but sorcery speed.
  • Failure modes: Five mana is expensive, and the enchantment mode does not let you choose the exact enchantment.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against indestructible or graveyard-recursive creatures because exile matters.

Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, top-end Bat threat and discard engine.
  • Role type: threat/clock; lifegain/stabilization; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Attacks as a flying lifelink 4/4, makes each opponent discard on attack, draws cards from opponents who cannot discard, and can return transformed as Temple of the Dead after dying.
  • Timing: Cast when you can pressure hands or stabilize life; transform Temple only as a sorcery when a player has one or fewer cards in hand.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{B}{B}; outputs flying lifelink damage, discard pressure, possible Bat tokens from discarded land cards, and later black mana from Temple of the Dead.
  • Mode map: Creature side pressures and drains hands; Temple of the Dead taps for {B} and can pay {2}{B}, {T} to transform only if a player has one or fewer cards in hand and only as a sorcery.
  • Partners / packages: Exact partners include Sanguine Bond, Exquisite Blood, Regal Bloodlord, Starscape Cleric, and Zoraline, Cosmos Caller.
  • Role peers: Starseer Mentor also pressures opponent resources after life changes; Lolth, Spider Queen is the other top-end attrition threat.
  • Failure modes: Card Reference lacks a single combined Oracle line, so use the face text and do not infer extra transform timing.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control and low-hand opponents; slower against exile removal.

Sinister Monolith

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, drain artifact and sorcery-speed card conversion.
  • Role type: engine piece; lifegain/stabilization; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: At combat on your turn, drains each opponent for 1 and gains you 1 life, then can be sacrificed at sorcery speed to draw two.
  • Timing: Cast before combat if the immediate drain matters; sacrifice only when two cards beat keeping the recurring combat trigger.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{B}; outputs each-opponent life loss, your lifegain, and optional {T}, pay 2 life, sacrifice to draw two as a sorcery.
  • Mode map: Combat-trigger mode feeds Starscape Cleric, Sanguine Bond, Exquisite Blood, Regal Bloodlord, and Lunar Convocation; sacrifice mode refills but costs 2 life and the artifact.
  • Partners / packages: Exact partners include Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Starscape Cleric, Lunar Convocation, Moonstone Eulogist, and Mirkwood Bats if token sacrifice lines are also present.
  • Role peers: Bontu's Monument and Rug of Smothering also tax life totals; Painful Lesson draws without sacrificing a permanent.
  • Failure modes: It is not a mana rock despite the name.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in multiplayer drain races; weak if you need immediate board removal.

Hazel's Nocturne

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant creature recursion and drain burst.
  • Role type: recursion; lifegain/stabilization; reach/finisher.
  • Deck-specific job: Returns up to two target creature cards from your graveyard to your hand while each opponent loses 2 life and you gain 2 life.
  • Timing: Cast after trading or before your turn when the returned creatures can be replayed; fire as reach when the 2 life loss matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{B}; outputs up to two creature cards to hand, each-opponent life loss, and your lifegain.
  • Partners / packages: Exact high-value returns include Deep-Cavern Bat, Starscape Cleric, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Regal Bloodlord, Mirkwood Bats, and Zoraline, Cosmos Caller.
  • Role peers: Witch's Cottage puts one creature on top; Mudflat Village returns Bat/Lizard/Rat/Squirrel cards; Cleric Class and Moseo return creatures to the battlefield.
  • Failure modes: Do not exile or surveil away creatures for Feed the Cycle if this recursion is the better plan.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong after sweepers and in grindy mirrors; weaker into Rest in Peace effects.

Shattered Sanctum

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premium Orzhov fixing land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {W} or {B} and enters untapped once you control two or more other lands.
  • Timing: On early turns, sequence it so it enters untapped when possible; later it cleanly casts Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Kaya's Guile, Swords to Plowshares, and Dawn's Truce.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes a land drop; outputs white or black mana.
  • Partners / packages: Casts Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Sanguine Bond, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Kaya's Guile, and other Orzhov costs.
  • Role peers: Caves of Koilos is untapped but can deal 1 damage; Scoured Barrens gains life but always enters tapped.
  • Failure modes: Can enter tapped on turns one or two and disrupt a cheap interaction turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong keep signal when paired with an untapped early land.

Star Charter

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flying Bat selector and pressure body.
  • Role type: card selection; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: If you gained or lost life this turn, it looks at the top four at end step and may reveal a creature card with power 3 or less to put into hand.
  • Timing: Cast when life-change triggers are easy to enable and you need creature flow more than immediate removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{W}; outputs a flying 3/1 and conditional creature selection.
  • Partners / packages: Important hits include Starscape Cleric, Deep-Cavern Bat, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Mirkwood Bats, Starseer Mentor, Regal Bloodlord, Starlit Soothsayer, Flock Impostor, and Three Tree Mascot.
  • Role peers: Lupinflower Village finds Bat, Bird, Mouse, or Rabbit cards; Gathering Stone checks the top card for a chosen creature type.
  • Failure modes: It cannot find Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Moonstone Eulogist, Emeritus of Woe, or Lolth, Spider Queen.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in grindy creature mirrors; weak when a 3/1 flyer is too fragile to matter.

Scoured Barrens

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped Orzhov land and lifegain trigger.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: Enters tapped, gains 1 life, and taps for {W} or {B}.
  • Timing: Play early when the tapped entry will not prevent a necessary spell; later use the 1 life to trigger end-step payoffs.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes tempo; outputs one life and either Orzhov color.
  • Partners / packages: Triggers Regal Bloodlord, Starseer Mentor, Starlit Soothsayer, Lunar Convocation, Wax-Wane Witness, Moonstone Harbinger, Essence Channeler, and Sanguine Bond.
  • Role peers: Adventurer's Inn gains 2 but only makes {C}; Shattered Sanctum and Caves of Koilos provide better untapped fixing.
  • Failure modes: Does not support turn-one untapped one-mana plays.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in slower hands and lifegain races; risky against tempo openings.

Arcane Signet

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core two-mana Orzhov commander fixing.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for one mana of Zoraline's white-black color identity, bridging early hands into Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Starseer Mentor, Sanguine Bond, Exquisite Blood, and double-spell removal turns.
  • Timing: Cast on turn two when it accelerates the commander or fixes an otherwise one-color hand; preserve untapped land mana instead if Swords to Plowshares, Repel Calamity, or Anguished Unmaking must answer a visible threat before your next main phase.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes two generic mana; outputs one white or black mana each turn without life loss, which matters beside Caves of Koilos, Ancient Tomb, Lunar Convocation, and Zoraline life-payment turns.
  • Partners / packages: Helps cast exact high-priority white/black costs: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Consumed by Greed, Starfall Invocation, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Kaya's Guile, Exquisite Blood, and Sanguine Bond.
  • Role peers: Commander's Sphere also fixes but costs three and can cash in for a card; Patchwork Banner fixes while pumping Bats/Clerics/Vampires; Mind Stone ramps but cannot produce white or black.
  • Failure modes: Weak topdeck after mana is solved; do not keep a slow hand on Signet alone if it lacks early lifegain, removal, or a Zoraline recursion target.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong keep signal against control and midrange because commander tax and double-spell turns matter; less urgent against fast aggro when a tapped/no-action turn two exposes your life total.

Bontu's Monument

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, black-creature cost reducer and drain engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; lifegain/stabilization; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Reduces black creature spells by {1} and drains each opponent for 1 whenever you cast a creature spell.
  • Timing: Cast before a creature-heavy turn; delay if the board demands removal this turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes three mana; outputs cost reduction on black creature spells and cast-trigger life swing from any creature spell.
  • Partners / packages: High-priority reduced spells include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Starscape Cleric, Darkstar Augur, Deep-Cavern Bat, Moonrise Cleric, Mirkwood Bats, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, and Starseer Mentor.
  • Role peers: Starscape Cleric and Sanguine Bond also convert lifegain to opponent life loss; Rug of Smothering taxes spell casting but hits you too.
  • Failure modes: Does not reduce nonblack creatures such as Moon-Blessed Cleric or Lifecreed Duo.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in long multiplayer games; weaker when you have few creatures in hand.

Moon-Blessed Cleric

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, enchantment tutor body.
  • Role type: tutor/search; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Searches your library for an enchantment, reveals it, shuffles, and puts it on top.
  • Timing: Cast when the top-decked enchantment is worth your next draw or when you can draw it immediately with another effect.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{W}; outputs a 3/2 body and a known enchantment on top of your library.
  • Partners / packages: Main-deck targets are Cleric Class, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Lunar Convocation, and Inspiring Leader; sideboard targets after swaps are Rest in Peace and Deafening Silence.
  • Role peers: Cruel Tutor finds any card but costs life and also puts it on top; Emeritus of Woe's Demonic Tutor copy puts any card directly into hand.
  • Failure modes: Tutoring to top is slow into discard, mill, or lethal pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Find Rest in Peace against graveyard engines after sideboarding; find Exquisite Blood or Sanguine Bond only when stable.

Blighted Bat

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap evasive Bat and haste mana sink.
  • Role type: threat/clock; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: Attacks in the air, triggers Zoraline's Bat-attack lifegain, and can gain haste for {1}.
  • Timing: Cast early for pressure or hold until a same-turn hasty attack matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{B}, then optional {1}; outputs flying damage and a Bat attack trigger.
  • Mode map: Normal mode is a flying 2/1; haste activation lets it pressure planeswalkers, enable Zoraline lifegain immediately, or surprise a low-life opponent.
  • Partners / packages: Exact attack payoffs include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Reaper's Talisman, Moonstone Harbinger, Patchwork Banner, and Three Tree City.
  • Role peers: Wolfbat, Moonrise Cleric, Deep-Cavern Bat, and Momo, Playful Pet are other small evasive bodies.
  • Failure modes: Low toughness makes it poor against reach, pingers, and sweepers.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better against planeswalkers and slow decks; weaker when blocking is required.

Bender's Waterskin

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, multiplayer mana artifact.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for one mana of any color and untaps during each other player's untap step, letting you represent instant-speed actions around the table.
  • Timing: Cast when future turns need flexible mana for removal, Zoraline triggers, or exact boarded cards such as Swords to Plowshares, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Kaya's Guile, and Dawn's Truce.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes three mana; outputs one mana of any color on your turn and potentially on opponents' turns if you have legal instant-speed uses.
  • Partners / packages: Holds up Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, Nameless Inversion, Sonar Strike, Repel Calamity, Early Winter, Anguished Unmaking, and Kaya's Guile.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet is cheaper; Commander's Sphere sacrifices for a card; White Lotus Tile scales with creature type counts.
  • Failure modes: Mana is wasted if you have no instant-speed actions or activated abilities to use on opponents' turns.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in multiplayer interactive pods; slower against fast aggro.

Wolfbat

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, recursive Bat threat.
  • Role type: threat/clock; recursion; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Flies early, triggers Zoraline's Bat-attack lifegain, and can return from graveyard when you draw your second card each turn by paying {B}.
  • Timing: Trade or mill it only when second-card draw sources are available; preserve {B} on turns with Diresight, Painful Lesson, Mind Stone, Fountainport Bell, Lunar Convocation, Lolth, or Commander's Sphere.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{B}; recursion consumes {B} and a second-card-drawn trigger, outputs Wolfbat with a finality counter.
  • Partners / packages: Exact second-card sources include Diresight, Painful Lesson, Mind Stone, Fountainport Bell, Commander's Sphere, Lunar Convocation, Lolth, Spider Queen, and Kaya's Guile only if another draw already occurred.
  • Role peers: Zoraline and Moseo also return creatures to battlefield; Hazel's Nocturne returns creatures to hand.
  • Failure modes: If it dies with a finality counter, it is exiled.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against one-for-one removal; weak into graveyard hate.

Reaper's Talisman

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, combat equipment and lifegain-drain tool.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; lifegain/stabilization; reach/finisher.
  • Deck-specific job: Gives an attacking equipped creature deathtouch and, if it attacks alone, drains the defending player for 2 while you gain 2.
  • Timing: Equip before attacking when one evasive or vigilant attacker can safely carry the effect; do not spend equip mana over removal under pressure.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {B} to cast and {2} to equip at sorcery speed; outputs deathtouch, life loss, and lifegain.
  • Mode map: Wide-attack mode only grants deathtouch to the equipped attacker; lone-attack mode also drains defending player for 2 and gains you 2.
  • Partners / packages: Best carriers include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Deep-Cavern Bat, Momo, Playful Pet, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, and Moonstone Harbinger.
  • Role peers: Sonar Strike and Repel Calamity handle combat threats; Cleric Class and Sanguine Bond reward the lifegain.
  • Failure modes: Attacking alone may reduce pressure or expose the equipped creature.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in races and against large blockers; less useful against token chump boards.

Feed the Cycle

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, efficient creature or planeswalker removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Destroys target creature or planeswalker after you either forage or pay {B}.
  • Timing: Hold for commanders, combo creatures, planeswalkers, evasive clocks, or lethal attackers; use early if waiting lets the threat snowball.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B} plus either {B}, exiling three graveyard cards, or sacrificing a Food; outputs destruction of target creature or planeswalker.
  • Mode map: Pay-{B} mode preserves graveyard recursion; forage mode spends three graveyard cards or a Food when mana is constrained or graveyard cards are expendable.
  • Partners / packages: Graveyard tension cards include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Wolfbat, Hazel's Nocturne, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Witch's Cottage, Mudflat Village, and Great Arashin City.
  • Role peers: Nocturnal Hunger kills creatures; Repel Calamity has size restriction; Anguished Unmaking and Vindicate are broader after sideboard.
  • Failure modes: Foraging away key creatures can blank later recursion.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against creature commanders and planeswalkers.

Nocturnal Hunger

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant creature removal with Gift choice.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Destroys target creature; if you do not promise a Food gift, you lose 2 life.
  • Timing: Use without gift when opponent Food would matter more than your 2 life; promise the gift when your life total is the limiting resource and the Food is low impact.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{B}; outputs destruction of target creature, with either your 2 life loss or an opponent-created Food token before effects.
  • Mode map: No-gift mode preserves opponent resources but costs you 2 life; Gift-a-Food mode avoids your life loss but gives an opponent a Food token.
  • Partners / packages: Life-loss payoffs include Lunar Convocation, Starseer Mentor, Starlit Soothsayer, Wax-Wane Witness, and Moonstone Harbinger.
  • Role peers: Feed the Cycle also kills creatures and planeswalkers; Sonar Strike is conditional combat damage; Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshares exile after sideboard.
  • Failure modes: Giving Food can help opposing artifact, sacrifice, or lifegain plans.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Important against voltron and creature combo.

Nesting Grounds

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, colorless utility land for counters.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {C} and can move a counter from one permanent you control to a second target permanent at sorcery speed.
  • Timing: Use counter movement only when it materially preserves a key creature or improves combat; otherwise keep it as mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: Produces {C}; activated ability consumes {1}, {T}, and two target permanents you control.
  • Mode map: Mana mode pays generic costs; counter-move mode can relocate +1/+1 counters from Essence Channeler, Cleric Class, Moonstone Eulogist, Momo, Playful Pet, or Abandoned Air Temple, or move a finality counter from a Zoraline-returned creature.
  • Partners / packages: Exact counter sources include Essence Channeler, Cleric Class, Momo, Playful Pet, Moonstone Eulogist, Abandoned Air Temple, and Zoraline-returned permanents with finality counters.
  • Role peers: Abandoned Air Temple adds counters broadly; Cleric Class and Essence Channeler generate counters through lifegain.
  • Failure modes: It does not make colored mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Useful in attrition games where finality counters or +1/+1 counters matter.

Moonstone Eulogist

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flying Bat engine around opposing deaths and artifact sacrifice.
  • Role type: engine piece; lifegain/stabilization; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Makes Blood tokens when opposing creatures die and grows whenever you sacrifice an artifact, gaining 1 life.
  • Timing: Cast before removal or combat trades when opposing creatures are likely to die; preserve artifacts if the +1/+1 counter and lifegain matter.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{B}{B}; outputs Blood tokens, +1/+1 counters, lifegain, and flying pressure.
  • Partners / packages: Exact artifact sacrifice sources include Blood tokens from Moonstone Eulogist, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Fountainport Bell, Sinister Monolith, and Food from Momo, Playful Pet.
  • Role peers: Mirkwood Bats also rewards token creation or sacrifice; Regal Bloodlord creates Bat tokens from lifegain.
  • Failure modes: It needs opposing creatures to die or artifacts to be sacrificed before it snowballs.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against creature decks; weaker against spell-combo decks with few creatures.

Deep-Cavern Bat

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, early evasive disruption and lifelink body.
  • Role type: interaction-discard; lifegain/stabilization; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Looks at target opponent's hand and may exile a nonland card until Deep-Cavern Bat leaves the battlefield.
  • Timing: Cast early before committing Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Zoraline, or Starfall Invocation, especially when you need to clear removal or identify a combo piece.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B}; outputs hand information, temporary nonland-card exile, flying pressure, and lifelink.
  • Partners / packages: Protects setup turns for Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Maskwood Nexus, Starfall Invocation, and Lolth, Spider Queen.
  • Role peers: Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal attacks hands later; Thoughtseize-style effects are not registered.
  • Failure modes: The exiled card returns when Deep-Cavern Bat leaves, so avoid using Flock Impostor on it unless resetting the choice is worth returning the card.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against combo and control; fragile against cheap removal.

Flock Impostor

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash changeling Bat and ETB rebuy tool.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; role glue; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: As a flying changeling with flash, it can surprise block/attack lines and return up to one other target creature you control to its owner's hand.
  • Timing: Hold up when you can save a key creature from removal or rebuy a high-value enters trigger; cast proactively only if pressure matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{W}; outputs a flying every-creature-type body and optional bounce of your other creature.
  • Mode map: Flash-protection aspect saves or reuses a creature; proactive creature aspect adds a Bat for Zoraline and type payoffs.
  • Partners / packages: Exact bounce targets include Moon-Blessed Cleric, Changeling Wayfinder, Rooftop Percher, Glidedive Duo, Momo, Playful Pet, and Deep-Cavern Bat when returning the exiled card is acceptable.
  • Role peers: Maskwood Nexus provides broad type support; Zoraline and Moseo reuse permanents from graveyard instead of hand.
  • Failure modes: Bouncing Deep-Cavern Bat gives the exiled card back.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against removal and combat tricks; weaker against sweepers that do not target.

Moonrise Cleric

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, evasive Bat lifegain attacker.
  • Role type: lifegain/stabilization; threat/clock; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: Attacks as a flying Bat and gains 1 life whenever it attacks, feeding the deck's life-change payoffs.
  • Timing: Cast early when you need a steady Zoraline trigger and lifegain source; keep back only when its body is needed to preserve life.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W/B}{W/B}; outputs flying pressure and attack-trigger lifegain.
  • Partners / packages: Exact payoffs include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Starscape Cleric, Essence Channeler, Cleric Class, Sanguine Bond, Regal Bloodlord, and Lunar Convocation.
  • Role peers: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller gains life from Bat attacks; Reaper's Talisman gains life when equipped creature attacks alone.
  • Failure modes: It must attack to gain life, so removal or unfavorable combat can stop the engine.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against slow decks and planeswalkers; less reliable when opponents have reach or flying blockers.

Essence Channeler

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap lifegain-scaling Bat Cleric.
  • Role type: mechanic payoff; lifegain/stabilization; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Grows with +1/+1 counters whenever you gain life, gains flying and vigilance if you lost life this turn, and moves its counters to another creature when it dies.
  • Timing: Cast before repeated lifegain sources; sequence Caves of Koilos, Painful Lesson, Lunar Convocation, or Zoraline payments if flying/vigilance matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs counters, conditional evasion/vigilance, and death-counter transfer.
  • Partners / packages: Exact lifegain sources include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Lifecreed Duo, Cleric Class, Angel's Feather, Reaper's Talisman, Glidedive Duo, Scoured Barrens, and Exquisite Blood.
  • Role peers: Cleric Class also turns lifegain into counters; Moonstone Harbinger turns life movement into Bat combat bonuses.
  • Failure modes: Without lifegain, it is only a 2/1 and vulnerable to cheap damage.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in races and with repeated small lifegain; weaker into exile removal that prevents counter transfer.

Abandoned Air Temple

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, white utility land and late team pump.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {W} and can put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control in the late game.
  • Timing: Play after a basic land when possible so it enters untapped; activate the pump when you have multiple creatures and no better use for four mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes a land drop; outputs {W}; activated ability consumes {3}{W}, {T} and creates +1/+1 counters.
  • Mode map: Mana mode casts white spells and Zoraline; pump mode turns Bat tokens and small fliers into real attackers.
  • Partners / packages: Exact counter payoffs include Essence Channeler, Nesting Grounds, Momo, Playful Pet, Regal Bloodlord tokens, Lunar Convocation tokens, and Maskwood Nexus tokens.
  • Role peers: Patchwork Banner pumps a chosen type; Cleric Class adds counters one life-gain trigger at a time.
  • Failure modes: Enters tapped without a basic land.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in board stalls; poor in hands short on black mana.

Lifecreed Duo

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap flying lifegain engine.
  • Role type: lifegain/stabilization; mechanic enabler; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Gains 1 life whenever another creature you control enters, turning every creature spell or token into life movement.
  • Timing: Cast before creature deployment or token creation; preserve it when lifegain triggers are your path to stabilizing.

Mudflat Village

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, restricted black creature mana and Bat recursion land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; recursion.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {C}, taps for {B} only to cast creature spells, and can sacrifice to return a target Bat, Lizard, Rat, or Squirrel card from graveyard to hand.
  • Timing: Use as a creature-mana source early; sacrifice only when the returned card is worth losing the land.
  • Inputs / outputs: Produces colorless or restricted black; recursion consumes {1}{B}, {T}, and the land.
  • Mode map: Mana mode casts black creatures; recursion mode returns exact high-value Bat/Lizard/Squirrel/Rat cards such as Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Starscape Cleric, Deep-Cavern Bat, Mirkwood Bats, Glidedive Duo, Wolfbat, or changeling cards like Flock Impostor and Three Tree Mascot.
  • Partners / packages: Exact recursion peers include Witch's Cottage, Hazel's Nocturne, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, and Moseo, Vein's New Dean.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in removal-heavy games; risky when land count is low.

Consumed by Greed

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, edict-style instant with optional recursion.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; recursion; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Makes target opponent sacrifice a creature with the greatest power among creatures they control; if you promised a card gift, you return a target creature card from your graveyard to hand.
  • Timing: Best against one large creature or when the opponent has only one greatest-power creature; promise the gift only when the recursion target is worth giving a card.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B}{B}; optional gift lets an opponent draw before effects; outputs sacrifice removal and possibly creature return.
  • Mode map: No-gift mode is cleaner removal; Gift-a-card mode adds recursion but gives the opponent a card.
  • Partners / packages: Recursion targets include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Deep-Cavern Bat, Starscape Cleric, Mirkwood Bats, Regal Bloodlord, and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal.

  • Inputs / outputs: Outputs colorless or colored mana; colored mode causes you 1 damage, which counts as life loss.
  • Mode map: Colorless mode pays generic costs without pain; colored mode fixes white/black while enabling lost-life checks for Lunar Convocation, Starseer Mentor, Starlit Soothsayer, Wax-Wane Witness, and Moonstone Harbinger.
  • Partners / packages: Casts Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Feed the Cycle, Repel Calamity, Sanguine Bond, Swords to Plowshares, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Kaya's Guile, and Dawn's Truce.

  • Role type: combo finisher; engine payoff; reach/finisher.
  • Deck-specific job: Whenever you gain life, target opponent loses that much life.
  • Timing: Cast when a lifegain event is ready or when Exquisite Blood is present/soon available; avoid tapping out if the table can remove it before it triggers.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{B}{B}; converts your lifegain into targeted opponent life loss.
  • Partners / packages: True combo with Exquisite Blood; immediate triggers can come from Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Scoured Barrens, Glidedive Duo, Hazel's Nocturne, Reaper's Talisman, Cleric Class, and Lifecreed Duo.
  • Role peers: Starscape Cleric drains each opponent for 1 per lifegain event; Starseer Mentor pressures one opponent at end step after life movement.

Starfall Invocation

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, primary sweeper with Gift upside.
  • Role type: interaction-sweeper; recursion; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Destroys creatures across the table, and if you promised a card gift, returns a creature card put into your graveyard this way to the battlefield under your control.
  • Timing: Cast when multiple opposing creatures matter more than preserving your board; Gift when one of your dying creatures is worth returning and the opponent card is acceptable.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{W}{W}; optional gift lets an opponent draw before effects; outputs a full creature reset and possible creature return.
  • Mode map: No-gift mode is clean mass removal; Gift-a-card mode converts one of your destroyed creatures into an immediate rebuild.
  • Partners / packages: Best return candidates include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Regal Bloodlord, Mirkwood Bats, Moonstone Eulogist, and Starseer Mentor.
  • Role peers: Kaya's Guile can force sacrifice but is not a sweeper; spot removal includes Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Repel Calamity, and Sonar Strike.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against go-wide boards and creature-combo pressure.

Cruel Tutor

  • Role type: tutor/search.

  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes four mana; outputs cost reduction, possible card-to-hand, or graveyard setup from top-card checks.
  • Mode map: Cost-reduction mode supports chosen-type spells; upkeep selection mode may reveal and draw a matching card or put an unwanted top card into graveyard.

  • Partners / packages: Exact Bat/changeling attackers include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Starscape Cleric, Deep-Cavern Bat, Wolfbat, Moonrise Cleric, Momo, Playful Pet, Flock Impostor, Three Tree Mascot, and Maskwood Nexus tokens.
  • Role peers: Patchwork Banner provides static type pump; Reaper's Talisman gives deathtouch to one equipped attacker.
  • Failure modes: Trigger only happens once each turn and only from life movement during your turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against creature boards where deathtouch changes blocks.

Regal Bloodlord

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, lifegain token engine and flying payoff.
  • Role type: engine payoff; threat/clock; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: At each end step, if you gained life that turn, creates a 1/1 black Bat creature token with flying.

  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{W}{B}; outputs flying body and conditional Bat tokens.
  • Partners / packages: Exact lifegain sources include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Lifecreed Duo, Cleric Class, Angel's Feather, Reaper's Talisman, Scoured Barrens, Glidedive Duo, Sinister Monolith, and Kaya's Guile.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against fair creature decks and control if it survives a turn cycle.

Momo, Friendly Flier

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap flying cost reducer and pressure piece.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: Reduces the first non-Lemur creature spell with flying you cast each turn by {1} and grows temporarily when another flying creature enters.

  • Partners / packages: Discount targets include Starscape Cleric, Deep-Cavern Bat, Moonrise Cleric, Wolfbat, Starseer Mentor, Darkstar Augur, Mirkwood Bats, Regal Bloodlord, Glidedive Duo, and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in tempo starts with multiple fliers; weak as a late 1/1 without follow-up.

Stargaze

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, scalable selection and graveyard setup.
  • Role type: card selection; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Looks at twice X cards, puts X of them into your hand, puts the rest into your graveyard, and makes you lose X life.
  • Timing: Use larger X when stable and looking for engines; use small X when digging for land or removal without overpaying life.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {X}{B}{B} and X life; outputs X selected cards to hand and graveyard fuel.
  • Partners / packages: Finds or stocks Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Starfall Invocation, Feed the Cycle, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Hazel's Nocturne, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, and Witch's Cottage targets.
  • Role peers: Diresight draws two after surveil; Cruel Tutor finds one card; Painful Lesson draws two with fixed life loss.
  • Failure modes: It puts cards into hand rather than drawing them, so it does not by itself trigger Wolfbat's second-card-drawn ability.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in attrition; risky against burn or lethal board pressure.

Starlit Soothsayer

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, Bat surveil engine and evasive body.
  • Role type: card selection; engine fuel/material; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: At end step, if you gained or lost life this turn, surveils 1 to improve draws or stock graveyard.

  • Partners / packages: Exact life-change enablers include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Scoured Barrens, Caves of Koilos, Painful Lesson, Lunar Convocation, Reaper's Talisman, and Glidedive Duo.
  • Role peers: Hidden Grotto surveils once on entry; Forum of Amity surveils through an activated land ability; Diresight surveils 2 immediately.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best in slow games where top-card quality matters.

Repel Calamity

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap conditional creature removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.

  • Partners / packages: Exact payoffs include Sanguine Bond, Exquisite Blood, Starscape Cleric, Cleric Class, Lunar Convocation, Regal Bloodlord, and Zoraline, Cosmos Caller.
  • Role peers: Hazel's Nocturne also drains each opponent for 2 and gains 2; Sinister Monolith drains at combat each turn.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in multiplayer drain races and against planeswalker boards.

Forum of Amity

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped Orzhov land with surveil sink.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Adds {W} or {B} and later pays {2}{W}{B}, {T} to surveil 1.
  • Timing: Play early when tapped entry does not disrupt; activate surveil when holding mana is unnecessary.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes a land drop and tempo; outputs Orzhov mana or late-game card filtering.
  • Mode map: Mana mode fixes colors; surveil mode looks at the top card and may put it into graveyard.
  • Partners / packages: Surveil supports Darkstar Augur top-card control and graveyard users Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Hazel's Nocturne, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Witch's Cottage, and Mudflat Village.
  • Role peers: Hidden Grotto surveils on entry; Starlit Soothsayer surveils after life changes; Path of Ancestry scries on shared-type creature casts.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in slow games; tapped entry is costly against tempo.

Blightbeetle

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, narrow hate creature.
  • Role type: hate piece; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Has protection from green and stops creatures your opponents control from having +1/+1 counters put on them.
  • Timing: Cast when opponent growth counters, modified creatures, or green blockers matter; otherwise prioritize stronger synergy bodies.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B}; outputs a small protected body and anti-counter static hate.
  • Partners / packages: Works beside removal spells Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Nameless Inversion, Repel Calamity, and Sonar Strike by preventing future sizing.
  • Role peers: Pithing Needle, Deafening Silence, Drannith Magistrate, Rest in Peace, and Dauthi Voidwalker are sideboard hate pieces for different axes.

Great Arashin City

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, black utility land and Spirit maker.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {B}, enters tapped unless you control a Forest or Plains, and can exile a creature card from your graveyard to make a 1/1 white Spirit token.
  • Timing: Play after Plains when possible; activate token mode only when the exiled creature is less valuable than the body.
  • Inputs / outputs: Produces {B}; token ability consumes {1}{B}, {T}, and a creature card from your graveyard.
  • Mode map: Mana mode is black only; token mode creates a Spirit for blocking, attacking, Lifecreed Duo, Mirkwood Bats, or Inspiring Leader.
  • Partners / packages: Graveyard tension includes Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Hazel's Nocturne, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Witch's Cottage, and Mudflat Village.

  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes tempo; outputs white or chosen-color mana.
  • Mode map: Choose black to cast Zoraline, Feed the Cycle, Starscape Cleric, Sanguine Bond, and sideboard Dauthi Voidwalker; choose another color only if a legal game effect truly requires it.

  • Timing: Choose Bat most often; activate when it produces at least three mana or enables a decisive multi-spell turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes a land slot and activation mana; outputs colorless or burst colored mana.
  • Mode map: Colorless mode is baseline; chosen-type burst mode scales with exact Bats and changelings such as Zoraline, Starscape Cleric, Deep-Cavern Bat, Mirkwood Bats, Regal Bloodlord tokens, Flock Impostor, and Three Tree Mascot.
  • Partners / packages: Maskwood Nexus makes your creatures every type, greatly improving the count.

  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.

  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{B}; target player draws two and loses 2 life.
  • Partners / packages: Self-target can trigger Wolfbat if it is your second card drawn this turn; life loss enables Lunar Convocation, Starseer Mentor, Starlit Soothsayer, Wax-Wane Witness, and Moonstone Harbinger.

  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B}; outputs temporary +3/-3 and type removal on target creature.
  • Mode map: Removal mode kills creatures with 3 or less toughness after modifiers; pump mode increases power at the cost of toughness and creature types.

  • Role peers: Sonar Strike handles attacking/blocking/tapped creatures; Repel Calamity handles power/toughness 4+ creatures.

Three Tree Mascot

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap changeling body and once-per-turn fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Counts as every creature type, attacks or blocks as a 2/1, and can pay {1} to add one mana of any color once each turn.
  • Timing: Cast early when it fixes a future Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Kaya's Guile, Dawn's Truce, or Swords to Plowshares; attack only when not needed as mana support or blocker.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes two mana; activated ability consumes {1} and outputs one mana of any color once each turn.
  • Mode map: Creature mode supports Bat/Cleric type payoffs; mana mode fixes colors without tapping.
  • Partners / packages: Exact type partners include Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Patchwork Banner, Path of Ancestry, Three Tree City, Gathering Stone, and Lupinflower Village.
  • Role peers: Firdoch Core also has changeling and fixes mana; Arcane Signet fixes more efficiently but is not a creature.
  • Failure modes: Paying {1} to make one mana is fixing, not acceleration unless color is the issue.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Useful in color-awkward hands and tribal-board plans.

Commander's Sphere

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, commander-color mana rock and free card conversion.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {W} or {B} and can be sacrificed to draw a card.
  • Timing: Cast when three-mana fixing unlocks top-end spells; sacrifice when mana is plentiful or you need a card at instant speed.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes three mana; outputs commander-color mana or a sacrificed draw.
  • Mode map: Mana mode fixes Orzhov costs; sacrifice mode draws a card and can help trigger Wolfbat if it is the second card drawn this turn.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Starfall Invocation, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Sanguine Bond, Exquisite Blood, and Anguished Unmaking.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet is cheaper; Mind Stone is colorless; Fountainport Bell also sacrifices for a card.
  • Failure modes: Sacrificing it can strand double-black or double-white spells.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in control and midrange; slower against aggro.

White Auracite

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, temporary nonland permanent answer and white mana artifact.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Exiles target nonland permanent an opponent controls until White Auracite leaves the battlefield, then taps for {W}.
  • Timing: Use on a problem nonland permanent when temporary exile is enough or when white mana afterward matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{W}{W}; outputs temporary exile and ongoing {W}.
  • Mode map: Removal mode answers target opponent nonland permanent until this artifact leaves; mana mode produces {W}.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Vindicate, Anguished Unmaking, Early Winter, Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, and Starfall Invocation.
  • Role peers: Anguished Unmaking exiles nonland permanents permanently at instant speed but costs 3 life; Vindicate destroys any permanent at sorcery speed.
  • Failure modes: If White Auracite leaves, the exiled card returns.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against commanders, planeswalkers, artifacts, enchantments, and large creatures when permanent removal is scarce.

Hidden Grotto

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, surveil utility land and slow fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Surveils 1 on entry, taps for {C}, or pays {1}, {T} to add one mana of any color.
  • Timing: Play before draw-sensitive turns when surveil can improve the next card; use fixing mode when color is more important than tempo.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes a land drop; outputs surveil, colorless mana, or filtered colored mana.
  • Mode map: Entry surveil looks at the top card and may put it into graveyard; colorless mode is efficient mana; fixing mode costs an extra {1} to make any color.
  • Partners / packages: Surveil supports Darkstar Augur, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Hazel's Nocturne, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Witch's Cottage, and Feed the Cycle.
  • Role peers: Forum of Amity surveils repeatedly for more mana; Path of Ancestry scries through creature casts.
  • Failure modes: Fixing mode is mana-inefficient.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in slow hands; weak when untapped colored mana is needed immediately.

Rest in Peace

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, hard graveyard hate bullet.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Exiles all graveyards on entry and replaces future cards or tokens going to graveyards with exile.
  • Timing: Bring in when the opponent uses graveyard recursion, reanimation, escape, flashback, delve, death loops, or graveyard commander value as a central plan.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs symmetric graveyard shutdown.
  • Partners / packages: Can be found by Moon-Blessed Cleric after sideboarding; pairs with pressure from Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Deep-Cavern Bat, and evasive Bats.
  • Role peers: Dauthi Voidwalker attacks opponent graveyards asymmetrically; Kaya's Guile exiles opponents' graveyards once; Rooftop Percher exiles up to two cards.
  • Failure modes: Hurts your Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Witch's Cottage, Wolfbat, Hazel's Nocturne, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Mudflat Village, Great Arashin City, and Feed the Cycle plans.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against graveyard decks; avoid when opponent graveyard use is incidental.

Path to Exile

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, efficient creature exile.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Exiles target creature, then its controller may search for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.
  • Timing: Use on commanders, combo creatures, voltron threats, or lethal attackers where the basic land is less important than removing the creature.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs creature exile and may ramp that creature's controller.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Swords to Plowshares, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, and Repel Calamity.
  • Role peers: Swords to Plowshares gives life instead of land; Anguished Unmaking hits nonland permanents but costs 3 life.
  • Failure modes: Ramping a big-mana opponent can be costly.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against commander-damage, combo-creature, and single-threat decks.

Swords to Plowshares

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, one-mana creature exile.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Exiles target creature and its controller gains life equal to its power.
  • Timing: Use on creatures whose continued presence is worse than the life gain, especially commanders and combo creatures.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs creature exile and opponent lifegain.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Path to Exile, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, and Starfall Invocation.
  • Role peers: Path to Exile gives a tapped basic land; Repel Calamity destroys only large creatures.
  • Failure modes: Life gain can delay your drain finish if used on a large creature unnecessarily.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against voltron, reanimator targets, and creature combo.

Vindicate

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, broad sorcery-speed permanent answer.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Destroys target permanent.
  • Timing: Bring in for planeswalkers, lands, artifacts, enchantments, commanders, or lock pieces that maindeck removal cannot cleanly answer.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}{B}; outputs destruction of any target permanent at sorcery speed.
  • Partners / packages: Covers problem permanents alongside Anguished Unmaking, White Auracite, Early Winter, and Pithing Needle.
  • Role peers: Anguished Unmaking is instant and exiles nonland permanents but costs 3 life; Pithing Needle stops activated abilities without removing the permanent.
  • Failure modes: Sorcery speed cannot answer a combo piece on the stack or during an opponent's turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against permanent-engine control, big mana utility lands, planeswalkers, and artifact/enchantment locks.

Anguished Unmaking

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, instant broad exile answer.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Exiles target nonland permanent and makes you lose 3 life.
  • Timing: Hold for a nonland permanent that will win, lock you out, or invalidate lifegain if left in play.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}{B} and 3 life; outputs instant-speed exile.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Vindicate, White Auracite, Early Winter, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, and Pithing Needle.
  • Role peers: Vindicate hits lands but is sorcery speed; White Auracite temporarily exiles and then taps for {W}.
  • Failure modes: The 3 life loss can be dangerous against burn or lethal combat.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against noncreature engines, commanders, planeswalkers, and indestructible threats.

Kaya's Guile

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, flexible instant interaction and stabilization.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; modal utility; hate piece; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: Chooses two effects, or all four if entwined: each opponent sacrifices a creature of their choice, exile all opponents' graveyards, create a 1/1 flying Spirit, and gain 4 life.
  • Timing: Cast when at least two modes matter; pay Entwine {3} when all four modes change the game.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}{B}, optionally {3}; outputs sacrifice pressure, graveyard exile, a Spirit token, and/or 4 life.
  • Mode map: Sacrifice mode pressures creatures without targeting; graveyard mode hits only opponents' graveyards; token mode creates a flying Spirit; lifegain mode stabilizes and triggers payoffs; entwine chooses all.
  • Partners / packages: Exact payoffs include Sanguine Bond, Cleric Class, Starscape Cleric, Mirkwood Bats, Lifecreed Duo, and Regal Bloodlord.
  • Role peers: Consumed by Greed is a single-opponent edict; Rest in Peace is stronger graveyard hate.
  • Failure modes: Opponents choose sacrificed creatures, so tokens can absorb the effect.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against graveyard, go-wide, voltron, and race situations.

Dauthi Voidwalker

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, graveyard hate threat and stolen-card payoff.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Gives opposing graveyard cards void counters in exile instead, attacks with shadow, and can tap/sacrifice to play an opponent-owned exiled card with a void counter this turn without paying its mana cost.
  • Timing: Deploy early against graveyard decks or spell-heavy decks where exiled cards will matter.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {B}{B}; outputs replacement graveyard hate, evasive pressure, and one sacrificed stolen-card cast.
  • Mode map: Static hate mode exiles opponent graveyard cards with void counters; activated mode sacrifices Dauthi Voidwalker to play one chosen exiled card this turn for free.
  • Partners / packages: Pairs with pressure from Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Deep-Cavern Bat, Momo, Friendly Flier, and Starscape Cleric.
  • Role peers: Rest in Peace is broader and symmetric; Kaya's Guile is one-shot opponent graveyard exile.
  • Failure modes: Double black can be hard after sideboarding, and creature removal can answer it before activation.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against graveyard, cascade/exile-value, and spell-heavy decks.

Drannith Magistrate

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, commander and outside-hand casting hate.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Prevents opponents from casting spells from anywhere other than their hands.
  • Timing: Bring in when the opponent relies on commanders, cascade-like casting, exile casting, graveyard casting, suspend-style access, or adventure/foretell-like zones.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs a 1/3 body and static casting restriction for opponents.
  • Partners / packages: Protects pressure from Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Deep-Cavern Bat, Starscape Cleric, and Mirkwood Bats by buying time.
  • Role peers: Deafening Silence constrains noncreature spell volume; Pithing Needle stops activated abilities; Rest in Peace attacks graveyard access.
  • Failure modes: Does not stop spells cast from hand or activated/triggered abilities.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against commander-centric and cast-from-exile plans; low impact against ordinary creature combat.

Deafening Silence

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, noncreature spell-chain hate.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Each player cannot cast more than one noncreature spell each turn.
  • Timing: Bring in against storm-like, artifact-chain, control-chain, or combo decks that need multiple noncreature spells in one turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs a symmetrical noncreature spell limit.
  • Partners / packages: Your creature-heavy pressure from Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Starscape Cleric, Deep-Cavern Bat, Mirkwood Bats, Regal Bloodlord, and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal can operate under it.
  • Role peers: Rug of Smothering punishes spell volume with life loss; Drannith Magistrate stops outside-hand casting.
  • Failure modes: It restricts your own noncreature sequencing, including tutors, removal, mana rocks, and enchantments.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against combo; avoid against creature decks where it slows you more than them.

Pithing Needle

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, named activated-ability hate.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece.
  • Deck-specific job: As it enters, choose a card name; activated abilities of sources with that name cannot be activated unless they are mana abilities.
  • Timing: Bring in only when an opposing commander, planeswalker, equipment, artifact, land, or engine has a known activated ability worth stopping.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}; outputs a static shutdown of nonmana activated abilities from the chosen name.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Vindicate, Anguished Unmaking, Drannith Magistrate, Deafening Silence, and Rest in Peace by attacking a different axis.
  • Role peers: Vindicate removes the permanent; Anguished Unmaking exiles nonland permanents; Drannith Magistrate stops casting from outside hand.
  • Failure modes: Does not stop triggered abilities, static abilities, mana abilities, or spell casting.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against activated commanders, planeswalkers, equipment, sacrifice outlets, and utility permanents with public names.

Interaction Priorities

  • Remove snowball engines before rate creatures: spend Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Nameless Inversion, Repel Calamity, Sonar Strike, Early Winter, Consumed by Greed, or Starfall Invocation on commanders, combo creatures, repeatable draw engines, sacrifice outlets, anthem engines, and evasive threats that beat lifegain racing. Card text check required for unfamiliar removal labels; follow the rules-engine target list over assumed card text.

  • Disrupt the card that changes the next turn cycle first: use Deep-Cavern Bat, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, and any legal discard/exile mode from Diresight, Hazel's Nocturne, or Consumed by Greed only when the visible prompt confirms the zone and candidates. Take interaction that stops Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Maskwood Nexus, or Starfall Invocation when preparing an engine turn; take a payoff or commander when the opponent's board is already contained.

  • Exile graveyard or recursion pieces before expendable attackers: if Feed the Cycle or another legal action offers exile, prioritize visible graveyard engines, escape/flashback-style resources, reanimation targets, or commanders that can be denied by exile. Do not spend exile effects on a normal creature in graveyard when the battlefield is the urgent problem.

  • Counterspell and bounce planning is defensive sequencing, not card selection: this list has no registered hard counterspell or obvious bounce package, so do not hold mana pretending to represent one unless a legal action from a permanent specifically offers it. Against opponents with open interaction, bait with Angel's Feather, Cleric Class, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, Blighted Bat, Wolfbat, Rooftop Percher, or Three Tree Mascot before committing Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Maskwood Nexus, Lolth, Spider Queen, or Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal.

  • Ignore low-impact bodies when life engines are online: do not remove a small ground creature that cannot profitably attack through lifegain, blockers, or flying pressure if an opposing engine, commander, planeswalker, sacrifice outlet, or evasive clock is visible. Against go-wide creature decks, change this rule and preserve Starfall Invocation or mass-effect legal actions for the turn when multiple attackers would overwhelm Zoraline, Cosmos Caller recursion or lifegain.

  • Preserve engine permanents by sequencing them after shields are down: cast Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Maskwood Nexus, Lunar Convocation, Darkstar Augur, or Bontu's Monument when opponents are tapped low, have spent removal, or when waiting risks death. Do not expose both Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond into obvious open removal unless legal actions and visible state show that immediate resolution or trigger sequencing is decisive.

  • Change interaction priorities by archetype: against aggro, remove haste, anthem, evasive, and double-spell pressure before value engines; against control, pressure hands and mana with Deep-Cavern Bat, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, and cheap threats before committing slow enchantments; against combo, discard or exile the visible enabler over combat creatures; against graveyard decks, value exile and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal higher than normal damage removal.

Combat And Trading Rules

  • Attack with evasive Bats when blockers do not matter: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Blighted Bat, Deep-Cavern Bat, Mirkwood Bats, Moonstone Harbinger, Moonstone Eulogist, Rooftop Percher, Wolfbat, and changeling or token creatures should pressure life totals and planeswalkers when legal actions show favorable attacks. Card text check required for each unfamiliar creature's flying, lifelink, vigilance, or attack trigger before assuming evasion.

  • Keep lifegain engines alive over chip damage: do not attack with Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Regal Bloodlord, Moonrise Cleric, or Moon-Blessed Cleric into trades unless the trade removes a more important opposing threat or enables a decisive Zoraline, Cosmos Caller recursion line. Preserve creatures that create repeated life gain, drain, tokens, or selection when the board is stable.

  • Trade early against fast pressure at 25 life or lower: in Commander, this deck can recover through lifegain, but it should not let early attackers compound into lethal commander or evasive damage. Block with expendable creatures such as Three Tree Mascot, Flock Impostor, Changeling Wayfinder, Blightbeetle, Blighted Bat, Wolfbat, or Momo, Playful Pet when the exchange saves meaningful life and does not break a visible engine.

  • Protect planeswalkers only when they will matter next turn: block for Lolth, Spider Queen if a loyalty activation, token production, or card-advantage line is visible and likely to survive. Let Lolth, Spider Queen absorb damage instead of sacrificing a key engine creature when the planeswalker is no longer central to the current plan.

  • Race with lifegain only when triggers are already present: Angel's Feather, Cleric Class, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Regal Bloodlord, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, and Mirkwood Bats can justify attacking instead of blocking if visible triggers or legal actions show life swings. Do not assume a race is safe from card names alone; check current life totals, opposing attack power, and available removal.

  • Trade commanders carefully: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller is a primary engine, so avoid commander combat trades unless commander tax is affordable, a recursion target is essential, or the trade prevents a lethal or snowballing attack. Against removal-heavy decks, forcing opponents to spend removal on Zoraline, Cosmos Caller can be acceptable if the hand contains other engines such as Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, or Lolth, Spider Queen.

  • Attack planeswalkers and combo players before slow value players: send flying pressure at exposed planeswalkers, low-life combo pilots, or opponents representing imminent wins. In multiplayer, avoid unnecessary attacks into a player whose blockers punish the board unless the damage advances lethal, commander pressure, or a specific engine trigger.

  • Use sweepers before chump chains collapse: choose Starfall Invocation or another legal mass-removal action when multiple opposing attackers would require sacrificing engine creatures over several turns. If your board is mostly small Bats, Clerics, or tokens, accept losing expendable bodies when the wipe protects Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, or a future commander recast.

Selection And Tutor Rules

  • Select before the land drop only when selection can change the land: use Diresight, Stargaze, Starlit Soothsayer, Star Charter, Hidden Grotto, Path of Ancestry, Fountainport Bell, Adventurer's Inn, or similar legal selection before playing a land if the hand lacks the next color, misses a third or fourth land, or must decide between an untapped source and a utility land. Play the land first when the selection spell or ability needs that mana to resolve or when the land choice is already forced by available colors.

  • Use Cruel Tutor for the card that solves the next full turn cycle: find Starfall Invocation when multiple opposing boards will outgrow spot removal, find Consumed by Greed, Feed the Cycle, Nameless Inversion, Nocturnal Hunger, Repel Calamity, or Sonar Strike when one visible threat must die, and find Exquisite Blood or Sanguine Bond only when the missing half can be protected or immediately threatens a decisive life-swing loop. Card text check required for timing, life payment, and top-of-library placement; do not assume the tutored card is drawn this turn unless a legal draw action is also available.

  • Use Moon-Blessed Cleric as an enchantment setup card, not a generic body: prioritize Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Cleric Class, Lunar Convocation, or another legal enchantment candidate shown by the engine. Choose defense first when behind, choose the missing drain/lifegain engine when stable, and choose Cleric Class only when repeated lifegain is already likely or leveling is visible and affordable.

  • Treat Witch's Cottage as delayed recursion when the engine confirms the condition: return a key creature to the top only when the next draw is worth spending on that creature. Favor Zoraline, Cosmos Caller support pieces, Essence Channeler, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Moonstone Eulogist, Moonstone Harbinger, Deep-Cavern Bat, Regal Bloodlord, or Mirkwood Bats over expendable bodies when the board is stable; choose a blocker or removal-linked creature only when survival is urgent.

  • Bottom redundant setup once engines are online: scry or filter away extra mana rocks, slow tribal support, and low-impact creatures when Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Maskwood Nexus, Lunar Convocation, Lolth, Spider Queen, or Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal is already active and the deck needs interaction. Keep Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, Bontu's Monument, or lands early if they let Zoraline, Cosmos Caller or a four-plus-mana engine arrive on curve.

  • Prioritize selection by board role: behind on creatures, look for Starfall Invocation, blockers, or efficient removal; behind on cards, look for Painful Lesson, Diresight, Stargaze, Darkstar Augur, Starlit Soothsayer, or Lolth, Spider Queen; ahead on board, look for Sanguine Bond, Exquisite Blood, Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Regal Bloodlord, or protection-by-sequencing pieces. Card text check required for unfamiliar draw/filter cards before assuming card quantity or selection depth.

  • Avoid tutoring into known discard or mill pressure unless the payoff is immediate: if an opponent has visible hand attack, top-card disruption, or forced draw manipulation, prefer cards that can be cast this turn or choose a resilient noncritical setup card. In multiplayer, do not reveal a slow deterministic plan with Cruel Tutor or Moon-Blessed Cleric unless the table already must answer a stronger threat or waiting risks losing.

Priority And Stack Rules

  • Pass priority aggressively when no legal instant-speed action improves the exchange: this deck is mostly permanent-based midrange, so do not spend mana just because a prompt appears. Hold up removal only when a visible commander, combo piece, lethal attacker, planeswalker ultimate, or graveyard engine is likely to matter before your next main phase.

  • Respond to removal on engine permanents only with legal actions that actually change the result: if Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Maskwood Nexus, Lunar Convocation, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Lolth, Spider Queen, or Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal is targeted, check for activated abilities, sacrifice outlets, protection effects, or instant-speed value before passing. Do not invent protection from card names; if no legal response preserves value, let the spell resolve.

  • Use instant-speed removal before combat damage when it changes deaths or lethal math: cast Nameless Inversion, Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Repel Calamity, Sonar Strike, Consumed by Greed, or Early Winter on attackers or blockers when the legal target and timing are confirmed. Remove evasive, trampling, lifelinking, double-striking, or commander-damage threats before ordinary ground creatures unless a smaller target enables a decisive block.

  • Let harmless spells resolve to preserve mana for the real fight: do not answer cantrips, ramp, or low-impact creatures when the visible table state points to a later commander, combo enabler, sweeper, or attack step. Save interaction for effects that attack your life total, remove your engines, blank your graveyard plan, or stop Zoraline, Cosmos Caller from stabilizing.

  • Sequence optional payments by current mana duty: pay life-drain, lifegain, class, monument, or other optional costs only when the payment leaves enough mana for visible removal, commander recast tax, or planned postcombat plays. Card text check required for Cleric Class, Bontu's Monument, Angel's Feather, Rug of Smothering, Reaper's Talisman, and all newer named permanents before assuming optional triggers, trigger timing, or payment amounts.

  • Put stack-trigger value behind survival: if multiple triggers or activated abilities are legal, choose lifegain, removal, or draw that prevents immediate damage before slow drain or token growth. With Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond both involved, follow the engine's legal trigger order exactly and stop if the rules engine asks for a choice that affects loop continuation, target, or mandatory draw.

  • Activate mana rocks and utility lands only when the action has a declared purpose: use Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, White Lotus Tile, Gathering Stone, Sinister Monolith, Bender's Waterskin, Fountainport Bell, Three Tree City, Nesting Grounds, Mudflat Village, Forum of Amity, Abandoned Air Temple, Great Arashin City, Misty Palms Oasis, or Firdoch Core according to visible legal text and current costs. Card text check required for unfamiliar utility lands and artifacts; do not assume they make mana, draw cards, move counters, or create tokens unless the engine exposes that action.

  • Use graveyard timing before the opponent converts value: fire Feed the Cycle or other legal exile effects in response to reanimation, flashback-style casting, death triggers, or recursion targeting when the target is visible. Do not exile a marginal graveyard card at end step if a stronger graveyard action is likely before your next priority window.

  • Treat commander recast windows as commitment gates: cast Zoraline, Cosmos Caller into open mana only when the board needs the lifegain/tribal engine now, opponents have spent interaction, or waiting risks losing tempo. If a legal end-step action builds mana, selection, or removal instead, prefer that setup before tapping out for a fragile commander.

Sideboard Map

  • Registration rule: this Commander-family registration has exactly 100 main-deck cards and exactly 10 sideboard cards. Veles may submit between-game changes only by moving exact registered sideboard names into the deck and removing the same number of exact registered main-deck names. Zoraline, Cosmos Caller remains the commander and must not be removed from the commander role.

  • Sideboard roles: Rest in Peace is the hard graveyard shutdown for recursion, reanimator, escape, flashback, and graveyard-as-resource decks; avoid it when the opponent's graveyard is incidental and your own Witch's Cottage, Moonstone Eulogist, Moonstone Harbinger, Hazel's Nocturne, or Wax-Wane Witness value matters more. Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshares are efficient creature answers for commanders, voltron threats, combo creatures, and evasive closers. Vindicate answers problem permanents, planeswalkers, lands, and lock pieces at sorcery speed. Anguished Unmaking is the broad instant-speed permanent answer when life loss is acceptable. Kaya's Guile is flexible against graveyards, sacrifice-resistant creatures, wide boards, and races where lifegain changes combat math. Dauthi Voidwalker is graveyard pressure plus a disruptive body; avoid it when Rest in Peace is already the cleaner plan and creature removal is expected to blank it. Drannith Magistrate is for commander-centric, cascade-like, suspend, exile-cast, and outside-hand casting plans; avoid it against ordinary creature combat decks. Deafening Silence is for spell-chain combo and storm-like turns; avoid it when your own turn needs multiple cheap spells to stabilize. Pithing Needle is for known activated engines, planeswalkers, equipment, commander abilities, and utility permanents; avoid blind use unless the opponent's commander or public board presents a named activation that matters.

  • Anti-graveyard recursion plan: Side in: Rest in Peace; Dauthi Voidwalker; Kaya's Guile Cut: Angel's Feather; Painful Lesson; Reaper's Talisman Use when the opponent's graveyard is a second hand, a combo zone, or the center of their commander plan. Keep Zoraline, Cosmos Caller pressure and cheap interaction; do not over-sideboard into graveyard hate when visible threats are actually on the battlefield.

  • Fast creature and voltron plan: Side in: Path to Exile; Swords to Plowshares; Anguished Unmaking; Kaya's Guile Cut: Painful Lesson; Diresight; Exquisite Blood; Sanguine Bond Use when the opponent is winning through one commander, one large attacker, or fast combat pressure. Keep cheap lifegain creatures and blockers, and treat the sideboard removal as protection for life total and commander-damage math rather than generic value.

  • Spell-combo and cast-from-outside plan: Side in: Deafening Silence; Drannith Magistrate; Dauthi Voidwalker; Pithing Needle Cut: Angel's Feather; Reaper's Talisman; Nocturnal Hunger; Sonar Strike Use when the opponent needs multiple spells in one turn, casts from exile or command-zone-adjacent permissions, uses graveyard loops, or depends on a specific activated engine. Maintain a clock with Zoraline, Cosmos Caller and evasive bodies because hate permanents only buy time.

  • Permanent-engine control plan: Side in: Vindicate; Anguished Unmaking; Pithing Needle Cut: Angel's Feather; Blighted Bat; Nocturnal Hunger Use against planeswalkers, artifact engines, enchantment locks, activated commanders, and noncreature permanents that the maindeck cannot reliably answer. Do not bring Pithing Needle without a clear opposing activated ability from commander identity, revealed information, or public board state.

  • Big-mana commander plan: Side in: Drannith Magistrate; Pithing Needle; Vindicate; Anguished Unmaking Cut: Angel's Feather; Reaper's Talisman; Painful Lesson; Diresight Use when the opponent's late game depends on commander recasts, planeswalkers, utility lands, mana engines, or activated inevitability. Keep acceleration from Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, and Bontu's Monument so hate plus pressure happens before the big-mana deck goes over the top.

  • Go-wide attrition plan: Side in: Kaya's Guile; Swords to Plowshares; Path to Exile Cut: Painful Lesson; Reaper's Talisman; Diresight Use when the opponent floods the board but still has a key anthem, commander, sacrifice outlet, or graveyard component. Preserve Starfall Invocation and lifegain bodies; one-for-one sideboard removal should answer the permanent that turns a wide board into lethal damage, not the least important token.

  • Low-change default: when no sideboard card clearly attacks the opponent's revealed plan, submit no changes and preserve the maindeck's tribal lifegain identity. The most common mistake is replacing too many synergy pieces with narrow answers; Commander-family games still require threat development, mana, and a plan that wins after the first answer resolves.

Matchup Guidance

  • Aggro: prioritize survival before engine assembly, because this deck wins longer games only after life total and blockers stabilize. Keep hands with early black or white mana, one cheap creature such as Deep-Cavern Bat, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Moonrise Cleric, Blighted Bat, Lifecreed Duo, or Essence Channeler, and at least one removal or lifegain line from Nameless Inversion, Nocturnal Hunger, Repel Calamity, Sonar Strike, Feed the Cycle, Consumed by Greed, Cleric Class, Angel's Feather, or Zoraline, Cosmos Caller. Post-board, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Kaya's Guile, and Anguished Unmaking are premium role cards against fast starts, but do not dilute the lifegain shell so far that Zoraline, Cosmos Caller stops stabilizing combat. Delay Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Maskwood Nexus, and Lolth, Spider Queen when the visible attack step can punish a nonblocking turn. Use Starfall Invocation only when the engine presents a legal sweep or reset that improves the next combat math; do not fire it into one expendable attacker unless life total is collapsing.

  • Control: make every commitment force a distinct answer, and avoid putting Exquisite Blood plus Sanguine Bond into visible open interaction unless the legal line immediately threatens a win or waiting gives the control deck more time. Deep-Cavern Bat is a priority early play when legal because it converts hidden-risk pressure into visible information and may clear the way for Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Darkstar Augur, Lolth, Spider Queen, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, or a tutor line. Prefer card-flow actions from Diresight, Painful Lesson, Stargaze, Starlit Soothsayer, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, and Cruel Tutor when the board is stable. Post-board, Vindicate and Anguished Unmaking answer planeswalkers, lock pieces, and problem permanents; Deafening Silence is only worth using when the control deck relies on chaining multiple spells rather than single high-impact answers. Commit Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Bontu's Monument, and Lunar Convocation only when the visible board can still defend after a sweeper or removal exchange.

  • Combo: apply clock plus disruption, because slow tribal value gives combo opponents time to assemble a deterministic line. Mulligan hands that only contain Angel's Feather, Cleric Class, and expensive top end unless they also have acceleration from Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, or a disruptive play. Use Deep-Cavern Bat, Cruel Tutor, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Nameless Inversion, Feed the Cycle, Consumed by Greed, Rug of Smothering, and pressure creatures to force the opponent to act through visible friction. Post-board, Deafening Silence, Drannith Magistrate, Dauthi Voidwalker, Pithing Needle, Rest in Peace, Vindicate, and Anguished Unmaking are role cards, but choose them based on the opponent's actual engine: spell-chain combo wants Deafening Silence, commander or cast-from-outside plans want Drannith Magistrate, graveyard combo wants Rest in Peace or Dauthi Voidwalker, and activated engines want Pithing Needle. Search lines should favor the fastest legal threat, disruption piece, or Exquisite Blood/Sanguine Bond half only when the other half, a life-change trigger, or enough mana is already realistically available.

  • Tempo: protect mana efficiency and avoid tap-out turns that lose to a bounced commander or a single evasive counterattack. Keep two- or three-land hands with an early play and a cheap answer over slow hands full of payoff permanents. Cast Zoraline, Cosmos Caller when the legal board state lets it attack, block, or generate value without losing the only relevant turn to a tempo answer. Post-board, Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshares improve the one-mana interaction profile, while Drannith Magistrate can punish commander-recast or adventure-style tempo plans. Use Nameless Inversion, Nocturnal Hunger, Sonar Strike, Repel Calamity, Deep-Cavern Bat, Path to Exile, and Swords to Plowshares on threats that are actively converting tempo into damage or denial; do not spend removal on a marginal creature while a flyer or protected attacker is ending the game.

  • Midrange: trade resources when your follow-up engine is stronger, and preserve unique engines when the opponent is only offering parity. Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Cleric Class, Starseer Mentor, Essence Channeler, Lunar Convocation, Darkstar Augur, Lolth, Spider Queen, Regal Bloodlord, and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal are the cards most likely to break stalled boards if their text and legal actions support the visible line. Post-board, Kaya's Guile, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Path to Exile, and Swords to Plowshares add flexible interaction, but avoid replacing too many synergistic creatures with answers unless the opposing commander or permanent engine demands it. Use Witch's Cottage, Moonstone Eulogist, Moonstone Harbinger, Hazel's Nocturne, and Wax-Wane Witness only through legal engine prompts; Card text check required for exact recursion timing on those cards. In grindy mirrors, Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond are high-threat commitments but should be timed after the table has spent interaction or when one piece can immediately affect life totals.

  • Big mana: pressure before inevitability, because one-for-one trading is poor if the opponent's late game outscales tribal lifegain. Keep acceleration from Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Bontu's Monument, Patchwork Banner, and functional lands such as Caves of Koilos, Shattered Sanctum, Path of Ancestry, Thriving Moor, Thriving Heath, Scoured Barrens, Hidden Grotto, Witch's Cottage, Three Tree City, or Mudflat Village. Post-board, Vindicate, Anguished Unmaking, Pithing Needle, and Drannith Magistrate matter when the opponent's inevitability is tied to a commander, planeswalker, land-like engine, or activated permanent. Deep-Cavern Bat should take the visible payoff or stabilizer only when the engine exposes that choice; otherwise use pressure and tutor lines to shorten the game. Do not overcommit small creatures into an obvious reset unless Maskwood Nexus, Lolth, Spider Queen, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, or a draw engine provides recovery.

  • Graveyard: respect graveyard engines when the rules engine shows legal targets, pending triggers, or visible recursion pressure. Post-board, Rest in Peace is the cleanest shutdown, Dauthi Voidwalker pressures graveyard use while advancing the board, and Kaya's Guile can answer graveyards without fully blanking your own recursion. Feed the Cycle, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Witch's Cottage, Moonstone Eulogist, Moonstone Harbinger, Hazel's Nocturne, and Wax-Wane Witness may matter, but Card text check required for exact graveyard interaction on the less familiar cards. Do not trade away important tribal creatures into an opponent recursion plan unless the trade prevents lethal, protects Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, or unlocks a stronger follow-up. If the opponent is using the graveyard as a second hand, prefer exile/removal/tutor decisions that break the engine over incremental lifegain.

  • Artifact/enchantment: identify whether the permanent is a mana engine, combo piece, or defensive lock before spending limited interaction. Post-board, Vindicate and Anguished Unmaking are the primary broad answers, Pithing Needle handles activated engines when the exact permanent is known, and Deafening Silence can slow spell-chain artifact or enchantment turns. Main-deck legal actions from Deep-Cavern Bat, Cruel Tutor, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Consumed by Greed, Feed the Cycle, Starfall Invocation, Rug of Smothering, and pressure still matter. If the opponent's artifact or enchantment engine is not currently beatable by interaction text shown in legal actions, pivot to faster damage, drain, or the Exquisite Blood plus Sanguine Bond threat. Do not hold creature removal for nonexistent artifact targets when the opponent is also attacking.

  • Go-wide: value sweepers, lifegain blockers, and board-size payoffs over one-for-one removal. Preserve Starfall Invocation for a turn where it changes the visible battlefield enough to survive or take over, and use Lolth, Spider Queen, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Regal Bloodlord, Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Momo, Friendly Flier, Momo, Playful Pet, Three Tree Mascot, and Lunar Convocation as board-presence tools when legal. Post-board, Kaya's Guile is useful when its modes line up with sacrifice, tokens, or graveyards, while Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshares should be reserved for the anthem, commander, or evasive creature that makes the wide board lethal. Block early with replaceable bodies if life total is becoming the losing resource. Avoid attacks that leave no blockers unless the crack-back is accounted for by lifegain, removal, or a lethal return line.

  • Single-threat: hold interaction for the card that matters and do not dilute answers across support creatures. Nameless Inversion, Nocturnal Hunger, Repel Calamity, Sonar Strike, Consumed by Greed, Feed the Cycle, Deep-Cavern Bat, Early Winter, and Reaper's Talisman should be aimed at the commander, voltron creature, large evasive attacker, or engine creature when legal action text supports the target. Post-board, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Drannith Magistrate, and Pithing Needle are high-priority role cards against commander-damage, activated-commander, and single-engine strategies. If removal is unavailable, race only after counting actual blockers, lifegain, and commander-damage risk. Zoraline, Cosmos Caller and evasive bodies can pressure planeswalkers or players, but survival against the one threat comes first.

  • Burn: treat life total as the primary resource and make lifegain engines matter before expensive setup. Keep hands with cheap plays, white/black sources, and lifegain or stabilization from Cleric Class, Angel's Feather, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Exquisite Blood, Nocturnal Hunger, or Consumed by Greed. Post-board, Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile are efficient answers to high-damage creatures, while Kaya's Guile can buy time if its lifegain or sacrifice modes are legal and relevant. Avoid Painful Lesson, Darkstar Augur, and painful Caves of Koilos use when the life payment is not buying immediate stabilization or a decisive line. Deploy Sanguine Bond only when a lifegain trigger is ready or the opponent cannot punish the tap-out.

  • Removal-heavy: diversify threats and preserve card advantage rather than stacking all value onto one creature. Lead with lower-value bodies when a must-answer permanent can follow, unless Deep-Cavern Bat is needed to reveal and disrupt removal. Zoraline, Cosmos Caller should be cast when commander tax remains manageable and the board can benefit from immediate legal actions; repeatedly casting into removal without gaining material is a losing exchange. Post-board, Dauthi Voidwalker and Drannith Magistrate are useful only if their text pressures the opponent's actual plan; otherwise favor resilient or noncreature engines such as Cleric Class, Maskwood Nexus, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Darkstar Augur, Lolth, Spider Queen, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, and Bontu's Monument when the opponent is trading one-for-one.

Specific Matchup Notes

  • General/archetype-only: revealed cards, legal actions, and public zones override every assumption in this section. The post-board posture can change because the registered 10-card sideboard contains real interaction, but the deck is still a Zoraline, Cosmos Caller lifegain and tribal-value strategy rather than a pure hate deck. Priority targets are the opponent permanents or spells that either shorten the clock faster than lifegain can recover, stop Zoraline, Cosmos Caller from generating value, break through the Exquisite Blood plus Sanguine Bond endgame, or invalidate combat with a commander-centric engine.

  • Fast creature starts: stabilize first with cheap blockers, lifegain, and removal before committing slow engines. Keep Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, Nameless Inversion, Sonar Strike, and Repel Calamity high in runtime evaluation when the opponent is presenting early attackers. Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Anguished Unmaking, and Kaya's Guile are the sideboard cards most likely to matter, especially when the opponent's commander or evasive threat makes ordinary blocking unreliable. Preserve Starfall Invocation for a board that cannot be handled by one-for-one plays, and avoid Painful Lesson or Darkstar Augur life pressure unless the drawn cards immediately change survival math.

  • Control and removal-heavy tables: diversify threats across creatures, artifacts, enchantments, and planeswalkers instead of exposing the whole plan to one answer. Lead with expendable pressure or mana artifacts when the opponent is holding open interaction, then commit Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Cleric Class, Darkstar Augur, Lolth, Spider Queen, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, or Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal when the visible shields are lower or the payoff starts immediately. Deep-Cavern Bat should prioritize visible sweepers, removal, or card-advantage engines when the rules engine exposes a legal choice. Vindicate and Anguished Unmaking are important against planeswalkers, locks, and noncreature engines; Deafening Silence and Drannith Magistrate are only for control variants that rely on multiple spells per turn or casting outside normal hand timing.

  • Big-mana and slower engine decks: pressure the opponent before their mana advantage turns every one-for-one trade into a losing exchange. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, Path of Ancestry, Three Tree City, Caves of Koilos, Shattered Sanctum, Thriving Moor, Thriving Heath, and Scoured Barrens matter more in opening hands because the deck needs to deploy threat plus interaction quickly. Drannith Magistrate, Pithing Needle, Vindicate, and Anguished Unmaking should be considered when the opposing commander, utility permanent, planeswalker, or activated mana engine is the source of inevitability. Cruel Tutor and Moon-Blessed Cleric should search for the card that changes the visible race or locks in a near-term engine; Card text check required for exact tutor legality and destination.

  • Graveyard or recursion pressure: act only on revealed targets and legal prompts, but do not ignore public graveyards that are becoming a second hand. Rest in Peace is the highest-impact sideboard answer when the opponent's deck is structurally graveyard-dependent, Dauthi Voidwalker is better when you still want a body and asymmetric pressure, and Kaya's Guile is best when flexibility matters. Witch's Cottage, Moonstone Eulogist, Moonstone Harbinger, Hazel's Nocturne, Wax-Wane Witness, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, and Feed the Cycle may interact with graveyards or death patterns; Card text check required for exact timing on less familiar cards. If the opponent's graveyard engine is visible, prioritize exile-like, discard-like, or tutor lines that interrupt the engine over marginal lifegain.

  • Combo or single-card engine opponents: use discard, tutor, hate permanents, and pressure to shorten the window before the opponent assembles inevitability. Deep-Cavern Bat is the cleanest visible-information disruption when legal choices are exposed, while Cruel Tutor, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Maskwood Nexus, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, and Lunar Convocation should be evaluated as ways to force the opponent to answer your plan. Deafening Silence, Drannith Magistrate, Dauthi Voidwalker, Rest in Peace, Pithing Needle, Vindicate, and Anguished Unmaking are matchup-dependent sideboard tools, not automatic inclusions together. Do not spend Nameless Inversion, Nocturnal Hunger, Sonar Strike, or Repel Calamity on low-impact bodies when a known engine creature, commander, activated permanent, or evasive closer is the real threat.

  • Artifact, enchantment, and planeswalker engines: make the first question whether the opposing permanent wins by mana, cards, combat prevention, activated abilities, or combo assembly. Vindicate and Anguished Unmaking are the broad sideboard answers, while Pithing Needle is strongest against a visible activated ability that the opponent cannot ignore. Deafening Silence can slow turns built around multiple noncreature spells, but it should not replace a clean permanent answer when one specific artifact, enchantment, or planeswalker is the real problem. If no answer is available, pivot toward pressure, drain, or Exquisite Blood plus Sanguine Bond rather than spending creature removal into an empty target class.

  • Go-wide and token tables: do not confuse many small creatures with the actual threat if an anthem, commander, sacrifice outlet, or graveyard loop is what makes them lethal. Starfall Invocation, lifegain bodies, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Lolth, Spider Queen, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Regal Bloodlord, Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, and Lunar Convocation remain core tools. Kaya's Guile can be valuable when multiple modes matter, and Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares should answer the commander or payoff that turns the board into a lethal attack. Avoid cutting too many creatures and lifegain pieces for spot answers, because the deck still needs board presence to survive multiplayer crack-backs.

  • Voltron, commander-damage, and single-threat pressure: treat commander damage and evasive clocks as urgent even when life total looks healthy. Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Anguished Unmaking, Vindicate, Pithing Needle, and Drannith Magistrate are the clean sideboard role cards depending on whether the threat is a creature, an activated ability, an equipment-like engine, or repeated commander recasting. Keep mana open when the visible board suggests a protection spell or lethal attack step. Zoraline, Cosmos Caller can help race and stabilize, but removal discipline comes first against one threat that can end the game through lifegain.

  • Lifegain mirror and attrition mirrors: value engines matter more than small life swings because both decks may invalidate chip damage. Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Cleric Class, Essence Channeler, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Lifecreed Duo, Regal Bloodlord, Darkstar Augur, Painful Lesson, Lolth, Spider Queen, and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal should stay central. Do not bring Rest in Peace, Deafening Silence, or Drannith Magistrate just because they are sideboard cards; use Vindicate, Anguished Unmaking, or Pithing Needle only when the opponent's permanent engine is actually stronger than your own. Early attacks that trade away tribal bodies are usually worse than preserving board texture for Zoraline, Cosmos Caller and future lifegain triggers.

Risk Summary

  • Mana risk: the deck is two-color but contains many named utility lands and artifacts, so opening hands with only colorless or delayed colored access can fail despite high card quality. Prioritize black and white access before keeping hands with Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Deep-Cavern Bat, Nameless Inversion, Cleric Class, Exquisite Blood, or Sanguine Bond.

  • Draw risk: Painful Lesson, Darkstar Augur, and other card-flow engines can become liabilities when life total is already under pressure. Spend life or tempo on cards only when the next legal actions stabilize, answer a threat, or assemble a clear closer.

  • Matchup risk: no sideboard means hostile archetypes must be handled with main-deck pivots rather than new cards. Add role cards is unavailable after game one; Reduce main-deck emphasis must mean changing sequencing, mulligans, tutor targets, and removal priorities only.

  • Over-sideboarding risk: the registered sideboard is empty, so any proposed sideboard action is illegal. Reject generated plans that try to add, cut, or transform the 100-card registration.

  • Graveyard risk: recursion assumptions are unsafe unless the rules engine exposes legal targets or public card text is known. Mark Witch's Cottage, Moonstone Eulogist, Moonstone Harbinger, Hazel's Nocturne, and Wax-Wane Witness lines as conditional when exact text is not confirmed.

  • Sweeper/removal risk: committing Zoraline, Cosmos Caller plus multiple tribal bodies into an obvious reset can lose the engine and the clock at once. Hold back redundant creatures when Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Lolth, Spider Queen, Exquisite Blood, or Sanguine Bond can preserve pressure through noncreature permanents.

  • Closer risk: Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond are powerful but slow if deployed without immediate life movement or protection from tempo loss. Commit them when the board is stable, a lifegain/drain trigger is ready, or waiting gives the opponent a better clock.

  • Interaction risk: removal is finite and must answer the permanent that is actually winning. Spend Nameless Inversion, Nocturnal Hunger, Sonar Strike, Repel Calamity, Consumed by Greed, and Feed the Cycle on lethal pressure, commanders, evasive closers, or engines before support creatures.

  • Sequencing risk: tutor, draw, and tapped-land choices can lock the turn into the wrong line. Check legal land drops, available mana, visible stack pressure, and whether Deep-Cavern Bat information should come before committing Cruel Tutor, Moon-Blessed Cleric, Starfall Invocation, Exquisite Blood, or Sanguine Bond.

Test Feedback Checklist

  • Deciding factor: record whether the game was decided by commander access, lifegain/drain inevitability, tribal board pressure, removal timing, mana failure, card velocity, or an unanswered opposing engine. Name the exact Veles-visible cards that mattered, especially Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Maskwood Nexus, Patchwork Banner, Lolth, Spider Queen, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, or Starfall Invocation.

  • Mulligans: identify whether each keep had black mana, white mana, an early play, and a route to either pressure or stabilization. Flag hands that kept Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, or utility lands without enough colored follow-through.

  • Mana: log whether Plains, Swamp, Caves of Koilos, Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Thriving Moor, Thriving Heath, Path of Ancestry, Mudflat Village, Three Tree City, or Hidden Grotto entered at a tempo that supported the chosen line. Note turns where a tapped land, colorless source, or commander tax changed the best legal action.

  • Velocity: ask whether Painful Lesson, Darkstar Augur, Diresight, Stargaze, Star Charter, Lunar Convocation, or Cruel Tutor converted into relevant action before the opponents clock or engine took over. Mark any draw or tutor line that produced cards but failed to stabilize, pressure, or close.

  • Engines: check whether Cleric Class, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Lunar Convocation, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Bontu's Monument, Angel's Feather, Maskwood Nexus, and Patchwork Banner were cast before they affected combat, life totals, or card flow. Record if engines were stranded because the board demanded removal first.

  • Removal: review every use of Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, Nameless Inversion, Sonar Strike, Repel Calamity, and Starfall Invocation. Mark whether the answer hit lethal pressure, a commander, an evasive closer, or an engine, or whether it was spent on a replaceable creature.

  • Sideboard: confirm that no sideboard action was attempted because the registered sideboard is 0 cards. Record matchups where the absence of sideboard cards forced a main-deck-only pivot through mulligan, tutor, removal, or threat sequencing.

  • Closing: ask whether the deck actually ended the game after stabilizing. Track missed opportunities to combine life gain, drain triggers, evasive pressure from bats or fliers, Lolth, Spider Queen pressure, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal pressure, or Exquisite Blood plus Sanguine Bond.

  • Role: identify whether the pilot correctly played as stabilizing midrange, proactive tribal pressure, attrition control, or combo-adjacent drain deck. Flag games where the pilot chased a slow engine while dying, or overtraded while ahead with a closing line available.

  • Mistakes: record legal-action mistakes separately from strategic mistakes. Note if Veles offered a better visible action, if hidden information was assumed, if a tutor target was selected without a clear next-turn plan, or if priority was passed with relevant interaction available.

  • Stranded cards: list cards that stayed in hand because of mana, timing, board state, target requirements, or risk. Pay special attention to Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Starfall Invocation, Cruel Tutor, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Maskwood Nexus, Lunar Convocation, and expensive or conditional removal.

  • Overperformers and underperformers: compare cards by game state changed, not by whether they looked powerful. Record whether Deep-Cavern Bat, Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Mirkwood Bats, Regal Bloodlord, Moon-Blessed Cleric, and Patchwork Banner advanced the decks actual winning turns.

First Tuning Questions

  • Mana base question: does the deck need more reliable untapped black and white access, or did Caves of Koilos, Shattered Sanctum, Scoured Barrens, Thriving Moor, Thriving Heath, Path of Ancestry, and basics support early double-spell turns often enough? Use games with stranded Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, removal, or enchantments as the evidence.

  • Ramp density question: did Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere, Patchwork Banner, Gathering Stone, Fountainport Bell, and White Lotus Tile accelerate decisive plays, or did too many mana objects dilute creature, lifegain, and interaction density? Card text check required for less familiar mana pieces before final slot judgments.

  • Aggro plan question: did early creatures and lifegain bodies stabilize fast starts, or does the list need more low-cost board presence around Starscape Cleric, Starseer Mentor, Deep-Cavern Bat, Moonrise Cleric, Essence Channeler, Lifecreed Duo, Blighted Bat, and Glidedive Duo? Tune only after confirming whether losses were from speed, removal scarcity, or mana.

  • Control plan question: did the deck have enough resilient noncreature threats against sweepers and removal, or were Maskwood Nexus, Cleric Class, Lolth, Spider Queen, Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Lunar Convocation, and Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal too slow without protection-like sequencing? Separate card-power issues from pilot overcommitment.

  • Closer question: did Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Regal Bloodlord, Mirkwood Bats, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Lolth, Spider Queen, and evasive creatures close after stabilization, or did games stall until opponents recovered? If closing failed, decide whether the problem was payoff density, tutor priority, or committing closers at the wrong time.

  • Interaction quantity question: did Feed the Cycle, Nocturnal Hunger, Consumed by Greed, Nameless Inversion, Sonar Strike, Repel Calamity, and Starfall Invocation cover the threats that actually mattered? Increase removal emphasis only if losses show unanswered visible threats rather than poor target discipline.

  • Velocity question: did Painful Lesson, Darkstar Augur, Diresight, Stargaze, Star Charter, Cruel Tutor, and Moon-Blessed Cleric find the correct resource at the correct time? If they underperformed, determine whether the issue was life cost, tempo loss, tutor destination, or insufficient payoff density.

  • Sideboard question: is the 0-card sideboard intentional for this Commander profile, or did testing reveal a need for a companion-style, wish-style, or event-specific sideboard plan supported by actual format rules? Do not add sideboard assumptions unless the registration changes.

  • Role-conflict question: are tribal pressure, lifegain/drain engines, commander recursion/value, and artifact ramp pulling opening hands in different directions? Tune by identifying which package won games, which package caused stranded cards, and which package demanded the most unsupported sequencing.

Veles Tactical Policy

Policy: Opening Hand Role Gate

Priority: High Decision families: mulligan; pregame Cards: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller; Sol Ring; Arcane Signet; Mind Stone; Starscape Cleric; Starseer Mentor; Deep-Cavern Bat; Essence Channeler; Lifecreed Duo Phase windows: opening hand; mulligan decisions Runtime cues: hand; commander available; land count; early legal plays Use when: evaluating keep, mulligan, or London bottom choices before the first turn. Avoid when: the rules engine has already advanced past the mulligan decision. Instructions: Keep hands with two or more mana sources, access to black and white by turn three, and either early board presence, ramp, or interaction. Mulligan hands with no early legal action, one-land hands without Sol Ring or Arcane Signet, and hands containing only slow engines such as Exquisite Blood, Sanguine Bond, Lolth, Spider Queen, or Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal. Bottom the card least connected to the hand's first three turns. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Early Tribal Setup

Priority: Medium Decision families: mana; priority Cards: Starscape Cleric; Starseer Mentor; Essence Channeler; Lifecreed Duo; Deep-Cavern Bat; Moonrise Cleric; Patchwork Banner; Maskwood Nexus Phase windows: turns one through four; main phase with priority Runtime cues: legal cast actions; available mana; visible battlefield Use when: choosing the first creature, tribal enabler, or mana enabler to commit. Avoid when: an opponent presents lethal pressure or a must-answer permanent. Instructions: Establish a low-cost creature or mana piece before slow payoff engines when the board is empty. Prefer Deep-Cavern Bat when visible hand-information or disruption is legal. Prefer Patchwork Banner or Maskwood Nexus when the hand needs tribal smoothing and the board is not under immediate pressure. Card text check required for less familiar creatures before relying on triggered abilities. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Mana Development And Color Discipline

Priority: Medium Decision families: mana Cards: Plains; Swamp; Caves of Koilos; Shattered Sanctum; Scoured Barrens; Thriving Moor; Thriving Heath; Path of Ancestry; Mudflat Village; Three Tree City; Hidden Grotto; Sol Ring; Arcane Signet; Mind Stone; Commander's Sphere Phase windows: precombat main; postcombat main; land-play prompts; mana-payment prompts Runtime cues: legal land play; legal mana ability; spell costs; commander tax Use when: choosing lands, mana rocks, and payment sources. Avoid when: Veles shows a mandatory payment with only one legal source combination. Instructions: Preserve black and white access before colorless acceleration unless the acceleration enables a same-turn relevant spell. Use tapped lands early when they do not block a legal cast. Avoid spending Caves of Koilos life when an equivalent source pays the cost and life total is under pressure. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Deterministic Single Mana Payment

Priority: Low Decision families: mana Cards: none Phase windows: any mana-payment prompt Runtime cues: action:pay Use when: exactly one legal payment action is shown and its text pays the pending cost. Avoid when: two or more legal payment actions are shown, or payment choice changes future colored mana. Instructions: Select the sole visible payment action for the pending spell or ability. Pilot skill floor: low No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Commander Commitment Gate

Priority: High Decision families: priority; mana Cards: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller Phase windows: main phase with priority; commander cast prompts Runtime cues: legal cast action for Zoraline, Cosmos Caller; available mana; visible opposing board Use when: deciding whether to cast or recast the commander. Avoid when: the commander is not a legal action. Instructions: Cast Zoraline, Cosmos Caller when she advances stabilization, pressure, or recursion more than holding mana for interaction. Delay commander recast if commander tax consumes the whole turn while visible attackers, engines, or stack threats require an answer. Do not assume commander text beyond current rules-engine actions. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Drain Engine Commitment Gate

Priority: High Decision families: priority; mana Cards: Exquisite Blood; Sanguine Bond; Starscape Cleric; Lifecreed Duo; Essence Channeler; Bontu's Monument; Angel's Feather Phase windows: main phase with priority; stack response windows Runtime cues: legal cast action; life totals; available mana; visible pressure Use when: deciding whether to commit lifegain or drain engine pieces. Avoid when: a visible threat requires immediate removal or a legal stabilizing blocker prevents lethal damage. Instructions: Commit Exquisite Blood or Sanguine Bond only when the turn can survive the tempo loss or when pairing with existing life-change triggers threatens a decisive swing. Deploy cheaper lifegain bodies first against pressure. Treat the two enchantments as fragile engine commitments, not automatic casts. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Tutor And Selection Commitment

Priority: Medium Decision families: selection; priority Cards: Cruel Tutor; Moon-Blessed Cleric; Star Charter; Stargaze; Diresight; Painful Lesson Phase windows: main phase; selection prompts; draw or tutor resolution Runtime cues: legal cast action; search or choose-card prompt; hand and battlefield context Use when: choosing whether to spend tempo or life on card access. Avoid when: the current board demands a legal removal spell, blocker, or lethal attack. Instructions: Tutor or select for the missing role: mana when stuck, removal when behind, Exquisite Blood or Sanguine Bond when stable and close to a drain finish, or a threat when the table is depleted. Do not choose a card name or target from hidden zones unless Forge exposes it legally. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Removal Target Gate

Priority: High Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Feed the Cycle; Nocturnal Hunger; Consumed by Greed; Nameless Inversion; Sonar Strike; Repel Calamity; Starfall Invocation Phase windows: main phase; combat; opponent priority; stack response windows Runtime cues: legal removal action; target prompts; visible attackers; visible engines Use when: deciding whether to spend interaction or choose a removal target. Avoid when: the target is replaceable and no immediate clock, commander, combo, or engine pressure is visible. Instructions: Spend removal first on lethal attackers, evasive clocks, commanders, combo engines, and permanents that invalidate the lifegain plan. Save Starfall Invocation for boards where a single-target answer cannot stabilize. Card text check required before using conditional removal against unusual permanent types. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Deterministic Target Opponent Drain

Priority: Low Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Sanguine Bond; Starscape Cleric; Mirkwood Bats Phase windows: triggered ability target prompts Runtime cues: action:target opponent Use when: a visible legal action targets an opponent for a drain, life-loss, or damage trigger from Sanguine Bond, Starscape Cleric, or Mirkwood Bats, and no other target class is legal. Avoid when: multiple opponents are present and target choice changes threat assessment. Instructions: Select the visible opponent-target action only when the prompt offers no strategic target distinction beyond targeting an opponent. Pilot skill floor: low No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Combat Pressure And Preservation

Priority: Medium Decision families: combat Cards: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller; Deep-Cavern Bat; Blighted Bat; Wolfbat; Momo, Friendly Flier; Momo, Playful Pet; Glidedive Duo; Rooftop Percher; Regal Bloodlord; Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal Phase windows: declare attackers; declare blockers; combat trick windows Runtime cues: legal attack or block actions; life totals; visible blockers; tapped status Use when: choosing attacks, blocks, or whether to hold creatures back. Avoid when: exactly one legal no-block action is procedural and no combat damage changes survival. Instructions: Attack with evasive creatures when the race favors life-drain pressure or planeswalker pressure. Hold lifegain, tribal, or commander-synergy bodies back when blocking preserves enough life to reach engine turns. Do not trade Zoraline, Cosmos Caller or key engine creatures for low-impact damage unless the attack is lethal or prevents a worse counterattack. Policy: Deterministic No Block

Priority: Low Decision families: combat Cards: none Phase windows: declare blockers Runtime cues: action:no blocks Use when: exactly one legal action contains no blocks, and Veles shows no legal block assignment. Avoid when: any legal block action is also listed. Instructions: Select the sole no-block action. Pilot skill floor: low No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Sweeper And Overcommitment Gate

Priority: Medium Decision families: priority; interaction Cards: Starfall Invocation; Lolth, Spider Queen; Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal; Maskwood Nexus; Lunar Convocation Phase windows: main phase; opponent end step; stack response windows Runtime cues: board size; legal cast actions; creature counts; visible pressure Use when: deciding whether to add permanents or reset the battlefield. Avoid when: one additional creature creates lethal or prevents lethal by blocking. Instructions: Avoid adding redundant creatures into an already sufficient board unless it closes the game or insulates against removal. Use Starfall Invocation when the opponents visible board will outscale blockers or kill before engines matter. After a reset, prioritize resilient threats and engines over small unsupported bodies. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Life As A Spendable Resource

Priority: Medium Decision families: mana; selection; priority Cards: Caves of Koilos; Painful Lesson; Darkstar Augur; Cruel Tutor; Cleric Class; Exquisite Blood; Sanguine Bond Phase windows: mana payment; draw spell decisions; main phase Runtime cues: life totals; visible attack power; legal pay-life or damage-to-self actions Use when: a legal line costs life or delays lifegain. Avoid when: visible attackers or burn-like stack items threaten lethal before the next lifegain opportunity. Instructions: Spend life for cards or color fixing when the gained action changes the next turn cycle. Refuse unnecessary life loss when already racing, especially before blockers or lifegain triggers are established. Prefer lifegain setup before Painful Lesson when the hand can already function. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Stack And Priority Discipline

Priority: High Decision families: priority; interaction Cards: Feed the Cycle; Nocturnal Hunger; Consumed by Greed; Nameless Inversion; Sonar Strike; Repel Calamity Phase windows: opponent main phase; combat; end step; stack response windows Runtime cues: legal instant-speed action; visible stack; available mana Use when: deciding whether to pass priority or answer a spell, attack, or activated ability. Avoid when: no relevant legal instant-speed action is listed. Instructions: Pass only after checking whether a visible stack object, attacker, or end-step window justifies interaction. Use instant-speed removal before combat damage when it prevents damage, removes a key attacker, or denies a combat trigger. Do not fire interaction into unclear stack text without confirming the target and effect from legal actions. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Artifact Ramp Versus Board Presence

Priority: Low Decision families: mana; priority Cards: Sol Ring; Arcane Signet; Mind Stone; Commander's Sphere; Gathering Stone; Fountainport Bell; White Lotus Tile; Sinister Monolith; Patchwork Banner Phase windows: early main phases; postcombat main Runtime cues: legal cast action for artifact; hand curve; visible pressure Use when: choosing between a mana artifact and a creature or interaction spell. Avoid when: the opponent has lethal pressure or the artifact text is unverified and the line depends on that text. Instructions: Cast Sol Ring or Arcane Signet early when it unlocks multi-spell turns or commander recasts. Prefer creature presence over slower artifacts when under attack. Card text check required for Gathering Stone, Fountainport Bell, White Lotus Tile, and Sinister Monolith before relying on non-mana utility. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Late-Game Closing Gate

Priority: High Decision families: priority; combat; selection Cards: Exquisite Blood; Sanguine Bond; Regal Bloodlord; Mirkwood Bats; Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal; Lolth, Spider Queen; Zoraline, Cosmos Caller Phase windows: main phase; combat; end step; selection prompts Runtime cues: opponent life total; visible attackers; legal cast actions; life-change engines Use when: the deck has stabilized and must convert advantage into a win. Avoid when: survival is not secure against visible crack-back damage or stack pressure. Instructions: Shift from trading to closing once life total, blockers, and engines are stable. Prioritize drain engines, evasive attacks, planeswalker pressure, and large threats over additional setup. Use selection effects to find a finisher when removal is no longer the limiting resource. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Registered Sideboard Plan Selection

Priority: High Decision families: sideboard; matchup_role_assignment Cards: Rest in Peace; Path to Exile; Swords to Plowshares; Vindicate; Anguished Unmaking; Kaya's Guile; Dauthi Voidwalker; Drannith Magistrate; Deafening Silence; Pithing Needle Phase windows: sideboarding; between games Runtime cues: opponent commander identity; revealed win condition; graveyard dependency; activated engine; spell-chain combo; voltron pressure; artifact or enchantment lock; planeswalker engine Use when: Veles asks for a between-game sideboard plan and the opponent's plan is known well enough to choose exact swaps. Avoid when: the opponent's axis is unclear, the proposed answer is narrow, or the swap would remove too much lifegain, creature density, mana, or Zoraline, Cosmos Caller synergy. Instructions: Select the smallest legal swap set that attacks the opponent's actual axis. Every incoming card must be one of the registered 10 sideboard cards, every outgoing card must be an exact main-deck card name, and the plan must preserve the 100-card deck plus commander structure. Prefer no changes over speculative hate. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Sideboard Lock Submission

Priority: High Decision families: sideboard; deck_registration_validation Cards: Zoraline, Cosmos Caller; Rest in Peace; Path to Exile; Swords to Plowshares; Vindicate; Anguished Unmaking; Kaya's Guile; Dauthi Voidwalker; Drannith Magistrate; Deafening Silence; Pithing Needle Phase windows: sideboarding; post-game lock; pre-game deck validation Runtime cues: candidate swap plan exists; Veles requests sideboard lock; validation pending; registered 100 plus 10 contract active Use when: a selected plan is ready to submit to the rules engine. Avoid when: any incoming name is absent from the registered sideboard, any outgoing name is absent from the main deck, counts are mismatched, or Zoraline, Cosmos Caller would stop being available as commander. Instructions: Validate exact spelling, equal exchange counts, and registered-card preservation before lock. If validation fails, return the unchanged configuration with a reason. Do not invent flexible slots, wish access, or off-registration cards. Pilot skill floor: low No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Narrow Hate Deployment Discipline

Priority: Medium Decision families: sideboard; tactical_play; threat_assessment Cards: Rest in Peace; Dauthi Voidwalker; Drannith Magistrate; Deafening Silence; Pithing Needle Phase windows: sideboarding; main phase; priority with legal permanent casts; pre-combo pressure windows Runtime cues: opponent graveyard count; visible recursion; commander cast dependency; spell-chain turn expected; named activated ability; public planeswalker or equipment; revealed combo engine Use when: a narrow sideboard permanent directly constrains the opponent's known plan and can be deployed without losing the board. Avoid when: the hate card is only generally annoying, conflicts with your stronger current line, or delays needed removal, lifegain, blockers, or commander development against visible pressure. Instructions: Deploy narrow hate when it changes the opponent's next meaningful turn. Choose Pithing Needle only with a concrete activated ability in mind. Treat Rest in Peace as high-impact but symmetrical; if your own recursion is central and the opponent is not graveyard-dependent, prefer pressure or flexible interaction instead. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Flexible Removal Allocation After Boarding

Priority: Medium Decision families: sideboard; removal_targeting; combat_survival Cards: Path to Exile; Swords to Plowshares; Vindicate; Anguished Unmaking; Kaya's Guile Phase windows: sideboarding; combat; opponent main phase; end step; stack response windows Runtime cues: commander-damage clock; combo creature; planeswalker ultimate pressure; artifact or enchantment lock; lethal attacker; sacrifice-resistant board; life total under pressure Use when: sideboard interaction has been brought in and Veles must choose whether to spend it now or preserve it for a higher-impact permanent. Avoid when: a maindeck answer handles the same threat cleanly, the sideboard answer is needed for a known commander or engine, or the life loss from Anguished Unmaking would make the race worse without solving the real problem. Instructions: Spend one-mana exile removal on creatures that are converting into lethal, commander damage, combo, or snowballing value. Use Vindicate and Anguished Unmaking for noncreature permanents or creatures that maindeck removal cannot answer profitably. Use Kaya's Guile when its legal modes produce multiple relevant effects rather than as a low-impact filler play. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
