Strategy Specifications
Deck Name And Archetype
Spider-Man 2099 is a Duel Commander, 100-card singleton Izzet strategy with a 10-card Veles policy sideboard; the registered inventory passes the supplied format-aware validation contract for 100 main-deck cards, singleton nonbasic construction, and exactly 10 sideboard cards. The command-zone card is Spider-Man 2099, and every runtime plan should treat commander access, commander tax, and visible legal actions as first-order constraints rather than assuming normal constructed redundancy.
- Archetype label: combo-control tribal tempo, with aggressive creature pressure, cheap interaction, and spell-trigger or combat-damage payoffs rather than a fully deterministic combo deck from the decklist alone.
- Stock status: rogue/hybrid; the list uses familiar Izzet pressure-and-permission tools such as Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, True-Name Nemesis, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Lightning Bolt, and Expressive Iteration, but the strategic identity is deck-specific because Spider-Man 2099, Sinister Concierge, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, Spider-Sense, Leyline of Resonance, Advanced Reconstruction, and other Marvel-specific cards require exact rules-engine text before being treated as known format staples.
- Color identity and mana posture: blue-red with a heavy Mountain count, enough Island access for blue interaction, and several tapped dual lands or utility lands; hands should be judged by whether they cast early red creatures/removal, hold up blue permission when needed, and still support commander or aura/equipment turns without assuming untapped perfect mana.
- Primary role concern: the deck can look like aggro, tempo, control, or combo depending on opening texture, so Veles should infer role from visible hand, commander availability, board pressure, and matchup context instead of forcing one static plan.
- Legality concern: the deck count and registered-zone validation pass, but exact card legality, command-zone behavior, and Oracle text for newly printed or Universes Beyond cards must be supplied by the rules engine at runtime; if text is absent, use “Card text check required” logic and avoid relying on imagined abilities.
- Commander concern: Spider-Man 2099 is the named strategy and likely a central engine or payoff, but this guide must not assume its text beyond legal actions exposed by Forge/Veles. Cast or protect Spider-Man 2099 only when the board, mana, and open interaction make the commitment better than developing pressure, preserving mana, or answering a threat.
- Tribal concern: the provided tags include tribal, but the creature suite is not safely classifiable from names alone; treat tribal synergies as conditional on visible card text and legal triggers rather than assuming creature types or lord effects.
- Combo concern: the tags include combo, and the deck contains cards that may create explosive turns such as Mercurial Spelldancer, Khenra Spellspear, Leyline of Resonance, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, and cheap spells, but no deterministic kill line is proven from the decklist alone. Require visible legality, mana, targets, and payoff text before committing to a combo turn.
- Control concern: the deck has real permission and bounce density through Counterspell, Mana Leak, Logic Knot, Negate, Spell Pierce, Wash Away, Turn Aside, Repeal, Vapor Snag, Blink of an Eye, Withdraw, Brazen Borrower, and Seal of Removal, so it can pivot into draw-go or protect-the-threat play when ahead on board.
- Removal concern: the deck has efficient red interaction with Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Flame Slash, Roast, Unholy Heat, Lava Dart, Lightning Axe, Fire // Ice, Ghostfire Slice, Pyrokinesis, Fury, and Force of Rage, but Veles must verify target legality and damage math from rules-engine output before assuming a creature dies.
- Protection concern: Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Lazotep Plating, Turn Aside, Spider-Sense, and permission can protect key threats or a commander commitment, but protection should be sequenced around visible mana, equip costs, stack timing, and known removal rather than treated as automatic safety.
- Sideboard status: the registered sideboard is Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Abrade, Vandalblast, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, Brotherhood's End, Dispel, and Aetherize; exact executable sideboard plans belong only in Sideboard Map, while this section flags that the sideboard covers blue mirrors, red threats, artifacts, graveyard/library-cheat effects, activated abilities, sweepable boards, cheap stack fights, and go-wide combat pressure.
- Opponent information status: no specific opponent decklist, commander, metagame target, or matchup label is supplied in this batch. Until Veles receives opponent-visible information, make decisions from legal actions, revealed cards, public zones, commander identity when known, life totals, clock, mana, and sideboard-stage context only.
- Runtime status: this guide is a tactical pilot specification, not a rules substitute. Veles must respect the legal action list, visible board state, public information, known revealed information, and Forge/Veles prompts even when a strategic rule suggests a different line.
Thesis
Spider-Man 2099 assembles a protected Izzet pressure shell: one hard-to-answer threat, enough cheap spells to force damage through, and enough permission or bounce to keep the opponent from stabilizing before commander damage, evasive creature damage, copied-spell pressure, or burn closes the game. Treat Spider-Man 2099 as the named build-around, but do not assume its text; Card text check required before committing mana, protection, or combo sequencing around it.
- Priority: establish an early threat such as Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Loyal Apprentice, Khenra Spellspear, Mercurial Spelldancer, or True-Name Nemesis, then use Lightning Bolt, Vapor Snag, Spell Pierce, Counterspell, Mana Leak, and similar cheap cards to convert tempo into damage.
- Priority: pivot into control when the hand contains Counterspell, Logic Knot, Negate, Wash Away, Mana Leak, Propaganda, bounce, and removal but no reliable fast clock; preserve life and cards until a resilient threat or Spider-Man 2099 can take over.
- Priority: treat combo turns as conditional burst turns, not guaranteed deterministic kills. Leyline of Resonance, Clout of the Dominus, Combat Research, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, Mercurial Spelldancer, Khenra Spellspear, and cheap interaction can create explosive sequences, but Veles must verify legal targets, copied-spell text, combat math, and stack state.
- Priority: protect the threat that is already winning instead of spreading resources across fragile permanents. Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Lazotep Plating, Turn Aside, Spider-Sense, and permission should defend Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or another active engine when that defense preserves the current win line.
- Not the plan: do not play as a pure draw-go control deck when a protected clock is available, do not burn face while a visible creature or planeswalker-equivalent permanent is racing you, and do not assume tribal synergies from the tag unless rules-engine text shows relevant creature types or triggers.
- Not the plan: do not keep hands that only contain tapped lands, expensive threats, and narrow protection. The deck needs early mana, an action before turn three, or cheap interaction that buys time for Spider-Man 2099 and the midgame threats.
Role Package
- Threats: Spider-Man 2099, Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, True-Name Nemesis, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Loyal Apprentice, Khenra Spellspear, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Brazen Borrower, Detective's Phoenix, Broadside Bombardiers, Nova Hellkite, Party Thrasher, Loch Mare, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, Floodpits Drowner, Sinister Concierge, Volatile Stormdrake, Fury, and Grim Lavamancer provide the bodies or repeatable damage sources. Card text check required for Spider-Man 2099, Sinister Concierge, Party Thrasher, Loch Mare, Floodpits Drowner, Nova Hellkite, Detective's Phoenix, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, and Spider-Sense before relying on exact abilities.
- Payoffs: True-Name Nemesis rewards protection and aura/equipment investment; Mercurial Spelldancer and Khenra Spellspear reward dense cheap-spell turns; Laelia, the Blade Reforged rewards continued attacks and exile velocity; Broadside Bombardiers, Grim Lavamancer, Fury, Pyrokinesis, Force of Rage, Ghostfire Slice, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Lava Dart, and Fire // Ice can turn tempo into final reach when life totals are low.
- Engines: Dragon's Rage Channeler, Grim Lavamancer, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Combat Research, Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, Faithless Looting, Occult Epiphany, Advanced Reconstruction, and Leyline of Resonance are the main repeat-value or velocity candidates. Use them when the board is stable enough that card flow beats holding up all mana.
- Velocity: Faithless Looting, Expressive Iteration, Light Up the Stage, Occult Epiphany, Repeal, Blink of an Eye, Fire // Ice, Impractical Joke, and combat-damage draw from Combat Research should smooth land drops, find protection, or locate closing interaction. Do not spend velocity before combat or land decisions if waiting could improve spectacle, trigger, or post-combat mana choices; verify legal timing.
- Interaction: Counterspell, Mana Leak, Logic Knot, Negate, Spell Pierce, Wash Away, Turn Aside, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Flame Slash, Roast, Unholy Heat, Lightning Axe, Lava Dart, Fire // Ice, Ghostfire Slice, Pyrokinesis, Fury, Force of Rage, Repeal, Vapor Snag, Withdraw, Brazen Borrower, Blink of an Eye, Seal of Removal, and Propaganda cover stack, creatures, tempo, and combat pressure. Use removal to preserve the clock or survival, not just because a target exists.
- Protection: Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Lazotep Plating, Turn Aside, Spider-Sense, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Mana Leak, Negate, Logic Knot, Wash Away, Vapor Snag, Blink of an Eye, and Seal of Removal protect key threats directly or indirectly. Prefer protection when the protected permanent already represents repeated damage, card flow, or commander pressure.
- Recursion: Squee, Dubious Monarch, Detective's Phoenix, Lava Dart, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, Faithless Looting, and Advanced Reconstruction are the apparent graveyard or repeat-use package, but exact reuse rules need runtime confirmation for any card whose text is not visible. Treat graveyard resources as spendable only after checking whether Grim Lavamancer, delve-like costs from Logic Knot, flashback-style actions, or Phoenix-style returns compete for the same cards.
- Mana: Command Tower, Shivan Reef, Sulfur Falls, Fabled Passage, Cori Mountain Monastery, Izzet Boilerworks, Molten Tributary, Highland Lake, Izzet Guildgate, Restless Spire, Temple of Epiphany, Wandering Fumarole, Opal Palace, Prismari Campus, Spectacle Summit, Swiftwater Cliffs, Island, and Mountain form a functional but sometimes tapped Izzet base. Prioritize untapped red for early threats/removal and untapped blue for permission turns.
- Sideboard modules: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Dispel strengthen stack fights; Hydroblast fights red pressure; Abrade and Vandalblast answer artifacts; Grafdigger's Cage attacks graveyard or library-cast engines; Pithing Needle targets activated abilities; Brotherhood's End answers small boards or artifacts; Aetherize punishes combat-wide attacks.
Primary Win Conditions
- Tempo-clock win path: establish Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Loyal Apprentice, Khenra Spellspear, Mercurial Spelldancer, or True-Name Nemesis before the opponent stabilizes, then use Lightning Bolt, Unholy Heat, Vapor Snag, Fire // Ice, Spell Pierce, Mana Leak, and Counterspell to keep combat damage flowing. Prioritize this path when the opener has untapped red or blue mana, one cheap threat, and one interaction spell; abandon face-burn sequencing if a visible blocker, lifegain engine, or must-answer permanent will erase the clock.
- Protected-threat win path: make one creature matter more than the rest of the board by pairing Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or Khenra Spellspear with Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Clout of the Dominus, Combat Research, Lazotep Plating, Turn Aside, Spider-Sense, or stack permission. Card text check required for Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Sense; use this line only from legal runtime text, and prioritize it when protecting one active threat beats adding a second fragile threat.
- Burst-spell win path: set up Mercurial Spelldancer, Khenra Spellspear, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Leyline of Resonance, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Lightning Strike, and cheap protection for a turn where spell triggers, copied spells, combat keywords, or pump convert into lethal or near-lethal damage. Execute only after Veles verifies legal targets, copied-spell choices, attack legality, and mana; hold the burst when open mana, known removal, or an unclear stack state makes waiting safer.
- Midgame pressure win path: use Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Broadside Bombardiers, Detective's Phoenix, Brazen Borrower, Party Thrasher, Nova Hellkite, Loch Mare, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, or Spider-Man 2099 to keep damage coming after the first wave trades off. Card text check required for Party Thrasher, Nova Hellkite, Loch Mare, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, Detective's Phoenix, and Spider-Man 2099; prioritize this path when both players have spent early cards and the opponent is trying to win by attrition.
- Reach win path: convert a low opposing life total into a kill with Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Lava Dart, Fire // Ice, Ghostfire Slice, Grim Lavamancer, Fury, Pyrokinesis, Broadside Bombardiers, or Force of Rage after combat forces blocks or taps mana. Prioritize reach when visible life totals and legal actions show an exact or two-step kill; do not spend burn on the opponent if a visible creature will kill you first or blank future attacks.
Secondary Win Conditions
- Creature-land pressure: use Restless Spire or Wandering Fumarole as a post-sweeper clock when the hand is reactive or the opponent has exhausted sorcery-speed answers. Activate only when Veles shows enough mana to still respect critical interaction, unless the attack is required to shorten a lethal clock.
- Control attrition: trade removal and counters for the opponent's highest-impact plays, then win with any surviving threat, commander recast, creature-land, or burn spell. Propaganda, Seal of Removal, Repeal, Withdraw, Blink of an Eye, Vapor Snag, and Brazen Borrower are tempo tools first, but they become control tools when they buy an entire attack step or reset an expensive permanent.
- Graveyard and recursion pressure: use Squee, Dubious Monarch, Detective's Phoenix, Lava Dart, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, Faithless Looting, Advanced Reconstruction, Grim Lavamancer, and Logic Knot as competing graveyard-resource cards, not as independent engines. Card text check required for Detective's Phoenix and Advanced Reconstruction; preserve graveyard cards when a future legal recursion or delve-like payment is more valuable than immediate Grim Lavamancer damage.
- Card-flow fallback: use Expressive Iteration, Light Up the Stage, Faithless Looting, Occult Epiphany, Combat Research, Impractical Joke, Repeal, Blink of an Eye, and Fire // Ice to find lands, threats, or protection when the first plan stalls. Sequence selection after checking land-drop needs, spectacle or combat-damage conditions, and whether holding mana for Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, or Spell Pierce is more important.
- Soft-lock fallback: use Propaganda plus bounce, removal, and counters to slow creature decks until a single evasive or protected threat can end the game. This is a stabilization plan, not a reason to pass indefinitely while the opponent builds a wider board.
Emergency Lines
- Behind on life: prioritize blockers, Propaganda, Aetherize after sideboarding if present, bounce, and removal over card-advantage setup; spend Lightning Bolt, Flame Slash, Roast, Unholy Heat, Lightning Axe, Fire // Ice, Fury, Pyrokinesis, or Brotherhood's End after sideboarding on creatures that shorten the visible clock.
- Behind on board: reset tempo with Withdraw, Repeal, Blink of an Eye, Vapor Snag, Brazen Borrower, Seal of Removal, Fire // Ice, or Propaganda before committing a fragile aura or equipment line. Do not suit up a creature into a losing race unless the resulting attack changes lethal math or draws cards immediately through legal text.
- Behind on cards: protect repeatable engines such as Combat Research, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Squee, Dubious Monarch, or Grim Lavamancer, and use Faithless Looting or Expressive Iteration to convert dead cards into action. Avoid two-for-one exposure from Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, or Mirror Shield if the opponent is representing removal and no protection is available.
- Behind on mana: prioritize untapped lands, cheap interaction, and one-spell turns over speculative burst setups. Use Fabled Passage and tapped dual lands with future color needs in mind, and do not rely on double-spell turns until Veles confirms available mana.
- Engine removed: switch immediately to the next legal pressure source rather than trying to rebuild the same package. If Mercurial Spelldancer dies, pivot to True-Name Nemesis, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, creature-lands, or burn reach; if Spider-Man 2099 is too expensive through commander tax, win with board pressure and preserve counters for threats that beat that plan.
- Graveyard disrupted: stop valuing Lava Dart, Grim Lavamancer, Logic Knot, Detective's Phoenix, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, and Advanced Reconstruction as guaranteed resources, and reassess them only from visible legal actions. Use hand, battlefield, and commander-zone resources as the primary plan until graveyard access is proven again.
Resource Model
- Life: spend life as a tempo buffer, not as a renewable resource. Shivan Reef, early untapped sequencing, and racing choices are acceptable when they let Spider-Man 2099, Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or Khenra Spellspear start pressure while interaction stays available.
- Hand: treat the hand as four lanes: threat, protection, interaction, and velocity. Keep at least one lane advancing every turn; a hand of only Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, and Spider-Sense can lose if it never presents a clock, while a hand of only threats loses if it cannot answer a race-breaker.
- Mana: convert mana into tempo before cards when the opponent is developing faster. Vapor Snag, Repeal, Seal of Removal, Fire // Ice, Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Flame Slash, Unholy Heat, and Lightning Axe are often worth spending early if they preserve attacks or prevent a damaging turn cycle.
- Board: protect one high-leverage permanent when it is already converting resources. Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Clout of the Dominus, Combat Research, Lazotep Plating, Turn Aside, and permission are strongest on a creature that is attacking, drawing, copying, surveilling, or threatening lethal; avoid adding aura or equipment exposure to a creature that will not change the clock.
- Graveyard: count the graveyard as contested fuel for Dragon's Rage Channeler, Grim Lavamancer, Lava Dart, Logic Knot, Faithless Looting, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, Detective's Phoenix, and Advanced Reconstruction. Card text check required for Detective's Phoenix and Advanced Reconstruction; do not consume graveyard cards for small damage or a marginal counter if visible legal actions suggest a stronger flashback, recursion, or threshold-like use later.
- Exile: treat exile from Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or similar legal runtime text as time-sensitive card access. Use temporary exile cards before passing when legal and strategically relevant, but do not tap out for a low-impact exile card if holding Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, Spell Pierce, Wash Away, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Dispel is the survival line.
- Lands: lands are both color access and late pressure. Restless Spire and Wandering Fumarole become win conditions after sweepers or attrition, while Fabled Passage, Temple of Epiphany, Prismari Campus, Izzet Boilerworks, and Opal Palace affect future sequencing more than immediate tempo.
- Sacrifice fodder: treat Gut, True Soul Zealot, Broadside Bombardiers, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Loyal Apprentice, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Detective's Phoenix, and tokens only through visible legal text. Sacrifice or token-conversion lines are good when they create damage, dodge removal, or turn expendable material into pressure; do not sacrifice the only stable blocker under a short clock without a lethal or stabilization reason.
- Information: use revealed cards, visible mana, known graveyards, commander tax, and public sideboard cards to choose whether to race or hold up interaction. Do not infer exact hidden cards; act on archetype clues only when legal actions and visible board state leave multiple plausible lines.
- Sideboard bullets: use Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Abrade, Vandalblast, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, Brotherhood's End, Dispel, and Aetherize as narrow resource converters after sideboarding. Each bullet should answer a visible axis: stack fight, artifact, graveyard, activated ability, wide board, or alpha strike.
Mana Guide
- Keep mana: keep hands with two or more lands, both colors or a clear path to both colors, and at least one early play or interaction spell. One-land hands need an exceptional legal plan with cheap selection such as Faithless Looting or Dragon's Rage Channeler plus castable spells; hands with only tapped lands and no one-mana play are risky against fast decks.
- Color needs: prioritize blue for Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, Spell Pierce, Wash Away, Repeal, Vapor Snag, Blink of an Eye, Brazen Borrower, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Combat Research, and Expressive Iteration. Prioritize red for Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Flame Slash, Unholy Heat, Lightning Axe, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Grim Lavamancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Fury, Pyrokinesis, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, and Broadside Bombardiers.
- Untapped sequencing: play Command Tower, Shivan Reef, Sulfur Falls when untapped, Island, or Mountain early when the turn requires interaction. Use Highland Lake, Izzet Guildgate, Molten Tributary, Swiftwater Cliffs, Temple of Epiphany, Prismari Campus, Spectacle Summit, Cori Mountain Monastery, and Izzet Boilerworks on turns where the lost tempo does not prevent a critical removal, counter, or threat.
- Utility sequencing: use Fabled Passage to fix the missing color or improve future draw quality when no immediate untapped source is required. Use Izzet Boilerworks only when replaying a land will not strand a needed one-mana answer, and prefer picking up a tapped dual or utility land over reducing access to the color needed next turn.
- Play land before draw: play the land first when the hand already has the colors needed for the turn and the legal draw or exile spell is unlikely to change land choice. This protects against missing tempo with Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, Faithless Looting, Repeal, Blink of an Eye, Fire // Ice, or Occult Epiphany when mana is already constrained.
- Draw before land: delay the land drop when Expressive Iteration, Faithless Looting, Light Up the Stage, Temple of Epiphany, Dragon's Rage Channeler, or another legal selection effect can reveal whether the turn needs Island, Mountain, a tapped dual, Restless Spire, Wandering Fumarole, or Fabled Passage. Do not delay if the spell itself requires the land to cast.
- Hold-up rule: leave blue mana open when the opponent can cast a decisive spell into Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, Spell Pierce, Wash Away, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Dispel. Tap out only when the threat, protection, or lethal line is stronger than preserving the answer.
- Creature-land rule: activate Restless Spire or Wandering Fumarole only after checking removal risk, combat math, and whether the activation consumes mana needed for interaction. They are excellent mana sinks in stalled games but poor early attacks if they expose the land to removal or prevent a counterspell.
- Commander tax rule: reserve enough mana for Spider-Man 2099 only when casting or recasting the commander is the best visible pressure or stabilization line. Card text check required for Spider-Man 2099; do not distort the entire turn around commander access if cheaper threats plus protection produce a better board.
Mulligan Guide
- Strong keep: keep two-to-three-land hands with both colors, one cheap threat, and one interactive spell. Examples include Island plus Mountain plus Dragon's Rage Channeler or Delver of Secrets plus Lightning Bolt, Spell Pierce, or Vapor Snag; Command Tower plus any land plus Counterspell or Mana Leak plus a castable threat is also strong.
- Strong keep: keep hands that curve threat into protection when the mana supports it. Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Mercurial Spelldancer, True-Name Nemesis, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Combat Research, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, and Counterspell are best when the hand can pressure while defending one important creature.
- Medium keep: keep slower hands with three lands, Expressive Iteration, Faithless Looting, Light Up the Stage, Occult Epiphany, Fire // Ice, or Repeal when they also contain removal or permission. These hands are acceptable on the play against slower opponents and better on the draw when the extra card improves color and curve reliability.
- Risky keep: treat one-land hands as conditional even with Faithless Looting, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Delver of Secrets, Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, or Spell Pierce. Keep only when the one land casts the early spell, the hand has multiple cheap looks or plays, and missing the second land for one turn is not likely to lose to visible matchup speed.
- Automatic ship: mulligan zero-land, five-plus-land no-action, one-color hands that cannot cast early spells, and hands whose first meaningful play is Nova Hellkite, Fury, Pyrokinesis, Force of Rage, Propaganda, or Spider-Man 2099 without early interaction. Card text check required for Spider-Man 2099, Nova Hellkite, Force of Rage, and several Marvel cards, so do not keep a hand relying on unverified text.
- Automatic ship: mulligan hands with only reactive stack cards and no pressure or card flow against opponents likely to develop permanents. Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, Spell Pierce, Wash Away, and Turn Aside need a clock, a draw engine, or removal support; permission alone can fall behind to resolved creatures or utility permanents.
- Matchup-dependent keep: keep removal-heavy hands with Lightning Bolt, Unholy Heat, Flame Slash, Roast, Lava Dart, Lightning Axe, Fire // Ice, Pyrokinesis, Fury, Seal of Removal, Vapor Snag, Withdraw, or Brazen Borrower against creature decks. Against spell-heavy or control opponents, prefer pressure plus Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, Spell Pierce, Wash Away, Combat Research, Expressive Iteration, or Light Up the Stage.
- Play/draw rule: on the play, prioritize an untapped turn-one play and a turn-two follow-up over speculative value. On the draw, accept a tapped land or slower selection hand more often if it has cheap interaction for the opponent's first threat.
- Trap hand: avoid aura/equipment-heavy hands with Clout of the Dominus, Combat Research, Swiftfoot Boots, or Mirror Shield but no creature that matters. These cards are excellent on a surviving attacker, but they do not recover tempo when the first creature dies or when the opponent starts wider.
- Trap hand: avoid graveyard-resource hands that fight themselves. Grim Lavamancer, Logic Knot, Lava Dart, Faithless Looting, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Detective's Phoenix, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, and Advanced Reconstruction can all want graveyard access; keep only when the hand has enough cards and mana to support the chosen plan.
Turn Arc
- Turn 1: lead with an untapped source for Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Grim Lavamancer, Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Spell Pierce, Vapor Snag, or Faithless Looting when legal. Use Temple of Epiphany, Swiftwater Cliffs, Highland Lake, Izzet Guildgate, Prismari Campus, Molten Tributary, or Spectacle Summit only when the hand lacks a critical one-mana play or the matchup does not punish the tapped land.
- Turn 1 deviation: hold Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Vapor Snag, Spell Pierce, or Wash Away when the opponent's first play can decide the game. Do not cast Faithless Looting merely to use mana if the hand already has land drops and would discard needed interaction or threats.
- Turn 2: develop pressure plus protection when possible. Preferred lines include threat plus Spell Pierce, Lightning Bolt, or Vapor Snag; Expressive Iteration only when land sequencing supports it; or Counterspell/Mana Leak hold-up when the opponent is about to cast a high-impact spell.
- Turn 2 deviation: cast Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, or Reckless Charge only when a creature is present or immediately likely to connect. If the board is behind, choose Flame Slash, Lightning Axe, Fire // Ice, Seal of Removal, Repeal, or Blink of an Eye instead of setup.
- Turn 3: convert the opening into a protected clock or a control posture. True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Gut, True Soul Zealot, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Propaganda, or commander access can be correct when legal text and visible board justify tapping mana; otherwise hold Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, or removal.
- Turn 3 deviation: avoid tapping out into a visible race unless the play changes combat immediately. Bounce with Brazen Borrower, Withdraw, Vapor Snag, Repeal, or Blink of an Eye when tempo wins the next attack step; kill with Unholy Heat, Lightning Strike, Ghostfire Slice, Roast, Pyrokinesis, or Fury when a permanent must not survive.
- Turns 4-5: pick a lane and stop mixing plans loosely. If ahead, protect the best attacker, use Light Up the Stage or Expressive Iteration to reload, and keep blue mana open when possible; if behind, spend removal, Propaganda, Aetherize after sideboarding, or bounce to survive before adding slow value.
- Turns 4-5 deviation: commit Nova Hellkite, Spider-Man 2099, Broadside Bombardiers, Party Thrasher, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, Sinister Concierge, Volatile Stormdrake, Loch Mare, Floodpits Drowner, Impractical Joke, Occult Epiphany, or Advanced Reconstruction only after checking legal text and visible risk. Card text check required for several of these cards; use them conditionally, not as assumed engines.
- Late game: turn excess lands into pressure with Restless Spire and Wandering Fumarole while preserving interaction. Use Prismari Campus, flashback-style legal actions from Faithless Looting, Lava Dart, Maximize Velocity, or Maximize Altitude, and recursive or exile access from visible card text to avoid empty turns.
- Late-game deviation: prioritize lethal math and survival over card advantage. Burn can finish the opponent, bounce can clear the final blocker, and permission can protect the last attack; do not spend Grim Lavamancer, Logic Knot, or graveyard costs if that removes the only resource enabling a stronger visible line next turn.
Card Roles
- Commander role: treat Spider-Man 2099 as the command-zone payoff only after runtime confirms its legal text and the board can support the commitment. Card text check required; do not tap out for it into obvious pressure unless the legal action text shows immediate stabilization, protection, or lethal pressure.
- Pressure one-drops: use Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, and Grim Lavamancer to create early threat density that turns cheap interaction into tempo. Delver of Secrets rewards a spell-heavy hand; Dragon's Rage Channeler improves selection but can compete with graveyard costs; Grim Lavamancer should be saved for repeatable removal or reach when the graveyard is not needed for Logic Knot, Lava Dart, Detective's Phoenix, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, or Advanced Reconstruction.
- Cheap red creatures: use Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Gut, True Soul Zealot, Loyal Apprentice, Khenra Spellspear, and Squee, Dubious Monarch as the main creature-pressure bridge from early turns into midgame. Card text check required for any unfamiliar triggered or token text, but the tactical default is to attack when profitable, protect the best ongoing source, and avoid exposing multiple small bodies to sweepers without a reason.
- Protected attackers: use True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Detective's Phoenix, and Brazen Borrower as evasive or resilient carriers for Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, or Maximize Altitude. Prioritize these cards when the opponent is light on edicts, sweepers, or flyers; hold them when removal plus counter backup is more important than racing.
- Unknown creature package: cast Broadside Bombardiers, Sinister Concierge, Party Thrasher, Volatile Stormdrake, Loch Mare, Floodpits Drowner, Nova Hellkite, and Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon only after checking visible legal text and board role. Card text check required; use them as conditional threat, disruption, or engine pieces rather than assuming card advantage, removal, or combo text.
- Large free interaction creatures/spells: use Fury, Pyrokinesis, and Force of Rage as emergency tempo tools when board position matters more than raw cards. Card text check required for Force of Rage; do not spend pitch-style resources unless it prevents lethal, clears multiple attackers, protects a decisive attack, or converts into immediate pressure.
- Equipment and shields: use Swiftfoot Boots and Mirror Shield to protect a commander, evasive threat, or snowball attacker after the creature is already valuable. Avoid casting them before developing a creature unless the hand has no other play and the matchup clearly rewards pre-positioned protection.
- Aura and combat draw package: use Combat Research and Clout of the Dominus on creatures that are likely to connect or survive. The mistake is enchanting a disposable creature into open removal when holding Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Mana Leak, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, or Spider-Sense would let the deck play a lower-risk tempo turn.
- Pump and graveyard pressure: use Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, and Maximize Altitude to convert small attackers into burst damage or evasive reach. Treat flashback or graveyard-based recasts as a shared resource with Logic Knot, Grim Lavamancer, Lava Dart, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Detective's Phoenix, and Advanced Reconstruction.
- Burn removal: use Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Ghostfire Slice, Fire // Ice, Unholy Heat, Lightning Strike, Flame Slash, Roast, and Lightning Axe to clear blockers, break early engines, or finish the opponent. Save Lightning Bolt and Lightning Strike for reach when the board is stable; spend Flame Slash, Roast, Lightning Axe, or Unholy Heat first on creatures that must die and cannot be handled by bounce.
- Bounce and tempo removal: use Seal of Removal, Vapor Snag, Repeal, Blink of an Eye, Withdraw, Brazen Borrower, and Fire // Ice to steal attacks, reset a blocker, answer tokens, or force the opponent to spend mana again. Prefer bounce over kill when the opponent invested auras, counters, equipment, combat tricks, or commander tax; prefer permanent removal when the same threat will immediately redeploy and beat you.
- Permission suite: use Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, Spell Pierce, Wash Away, Logic Knot, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, and Spider-Sense to protect a clock or stop a decisive opposing play. Card text check required for Spider-Sense; Counterspell is the clean catch-all, Mana Leak and Spell Pierce are tempo-sensitive, Negate is for noncreature haymakers, Wash Away should be checked against commander or cast-from-zone lines, Logic Knot spends graveyard equity, and Turn Aside or Lazotep Plating should usually guard a key permanent rather than a minor exchange.
- Card flow: use Faithless Looting, Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, Occult Epiphany, and Impractical Joke to avoid running out after early interaction. Card text check required for Occult Epiphany and Impractical Joke; Faithless Looting is best when discards are real resources, Light Up the Stage wants damage first, and Expressive Iteration rewards planned land drops and available mana.
- Engines and constraints: use Leyline of Resonance, Advanced Reconstruction, Propaganda, and Combat Research as matchup-dependent engines rather than automatic curve plays. Card text check required for Leyline of Resonance and Advanced Reconstruction; Propaganda is strongest when creature decks need multiple attackers, and weakest when the opponent can win through one large threat, burn, or noncombat pressure.
- Commander-support timing: protect Spider-Man 2099, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, or another current best threat before adding extra material. The deck wins many games by making one protected threat matter while holding burn, bounce, or permission.
- Graveyard management: decide early whether the graveyard is fuel for Grim Lavamancer, Logic Knot, Lava Dart, Faithless Looting, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Detective's Phoenix, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, or Advanced Reconstruction. Do not exile or discard a card casually if another visible legal action depends on the same graveyard stock.
- Land roles: prioritize untapped blue-red access from Command Tower, Shivan Reef, Sulfur Falls, Island, and Mountain when holding one-mana interaction or Counterspell. Use Fabled Passage for color fixing or graveyard enablement when tempo allows; use Izzet Boilerworks only when hand size, land drops, and opposing pressure make the bounce safe.
- Tapped land roles: use Temple of Epiphany, Molten Tributary, Highland Lake, Izzet Guildgate, Prismari Campus, Swiftwater Cliffs, Cori Mountain Monastery, and Spectacle Summit on turns where the lost tempo does not strand a key legal action. Card text check required for Cori Mountain Monastery and Spectacle Summit; do not assume extra abilities unless the engine exposes them.
- Utility land roles: use Restless Spire and Wandering Fumarole as late-game pressure after both players trade resources. Use Opal Palace only according to visible legal action text, especially if commander-color or counter text matters; do not choose it over untapped interaction mana unless the current turn can absorb the tempo cost.
Card Hover Notes
Spider-Man 2099
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, commander and core build-around pressure payoff.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine payoff; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Cast after turn three restriction clears, then convert nonhand plays from Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Advanced Reconstruction, Cori Mountain Monastery, Nova Hellkite warp recast, Faithless Looting flashback, Lava Dart flashback, Reckless Charge flashback, Maximize Altitude jump-start, Maximize Velocity jump-start, or Detective's Phoenix bestow from graveyard into end-step damage equal to Spider-Man 2099's power to any target.
- Timing: Do not tap out for him before protection or tempo is ready unless double strike plus vigilance changes the race; the best turns play or cast from exile/graveyard first, attack, then collect end-step damage.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{R} plus future commander tax; outputs vigilant double-strike damage and repeat any-target damage when the turn includes a land played or spell cast from anywhere other than hand.
- Partners / packages: Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Lazotep Plating, Turn Aside, Counterspell, and Spider-Sense protect or enlarge him; Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Advanced Reconstruction, and Cori Mountain Monastery turn on his trigger.
- Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Laelia, the Blade Reforged as exile-play pressure and True-Name Nemesis as protected clock.
- Failure modes: Cannot be cast during your first, second, or third turns; commander tax can make recasts worse than cheaper threats; end-step trigger fails if no land or spell was played/cast from outside hand that turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against midrange and control when protected; against fast aggro, cast only if vigilance and end-step damage beat holding removal, Propaganda, or Aetherize.
Broadside Bombardiers
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, midgame role player and sacrifice-based reach threat.
- Role type: threat/clock; reach/finisher; engine payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Attack with menace and haste, then use boast after attacking to sacrifice another creature or artifact and deal 2 plus that permanent's mana value to any target. Best sacrifice material is expendable output from Loyal Apprentice, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Gut, True Soul Zealot, Force of Rage, Occult Epiphany, Lazotep Plating, or Detective's Phoenix when the damage matters more than the body.
- Timing: Activate boast only after Broadside Bombardiers has attacked and only once each turn; save sacrifice until lethal, blocker removal, planeswalker removal, or dodging exile/removal on expendable material.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R}, an attack, and another creature or artifact; outputs menace haste pressure plus any-target damage based on sacrificed permanent mana value.
- Partners / packages: Loyal Apprentice creates 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature tokens; Kari Zev, Skyship Raider creates Ragavan until end of combat; Gut, True Soul Zealot creates a 4/1 Skeleton when sacrificing another creature or artifact; Force of Rage creates temporary 3/1 Elementals.
- Role peers: Closest role overlap is Grim Lavamancer for repeatable any-target damage and Lightning Bolt for direct reach.
- Failure modes: Sacrificing True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Spider-Man 2099, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or a Combat Research carrier is usually wrong unless it wins immediately.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent when boards stall or opponent taps low; weaker against instant removal before combat because boast requires this creature to attack.
Sinister Concierge
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tempo disruption creature and singleton flex slot.
- Role type: role glue; interaction-removal; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Trade or sacrifice in combat to trigger death text, optionally exile Sinister Concierge with three time counters and exile up to one target creature with three time counters. This delays a key creature instead of permanently killing it, buying attack steps for Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or Delver of Secrets.
- Timing: Best when a temporary three-upkeep delay wins the race, clears a blocker, or answers a commander long enough for pressure; poor when the opponent benefits from recasting the suspended creature or the delayed creature has a dangerous cast trigger.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U} and usually its death; outputs a 2/1 body and a suspend-style exile delay for itself and up to one target creature.
- Partners / packages: Broadside Bombardiers and Gut, True Soul Zealot can turn its death into value; Counterspell, Mana Leak, and Wash Away can fight the creature when it is later cast from exile.
- Role peers: Closest role overlap is Seal of Removal, Vapor Snag, and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft as temporary creature/permanent interaction.
- Failure modes: The owner may cast the exiled creature without paying its mana cost when the last time counter is removed, and those creature spells have haste; do not use this on a creature whose delayed recast is worse than leaving it now.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against single expensive attackers; weaker against small go-wide boards and creatures with powerful cast or enters triggers.
True-Name Nemesis
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core protected attacker.
- Role type: threat/clock; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Choose the opposing player as it enters in Duel Commander, making True-Name Nemesis protected from that player and ideal for carrying Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Reckless Charge, Maximize Altitude, or Maximize Velocity.
- Timing: Cast when you can name the opponent and start attacking before sweepers or edicts matter; protect aura/equipment investment only if the opponent's answers can legally affect it despite protection.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}{U}; outputs a hard-to-block, hard-to-target 3-power clock against the chosen player.
- Partners / packages: Combat Research draws on combat damage; Clout of the Dominus adds +1/+1 and shroud if blue; Reckless Charge adds burst power and haste; Maximize Altitude adds flying if protection does not already make blocking irrelevant.
- Role peers: Closest role overlap is Mercurial Spelldancer as unblockable pressure and Spider-Man 2099 as a protected-when-supported clock.
- Failure modes: Protection from the chosen player does not stop sweepers, edicts, sacrifice effects, or your own shroud from Clout of the Dominus preventing later friendly targeting.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against spot-removal decks and creature boards; watch for non-targeting sweepers such as Brotherhood's End after sideboarding.
Dragon's Rage Channeler
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana core pressure and graveyard-selection enabler.
- Role type: mechanic enabler; card selection; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Turn Lightning Bolt, Spider-Sense, Lava Dart, Fire // Ice, Repeal, Vapor Snag, Unholy Heat, Blink of an Eye, Faithless Looting, Expressive Iteration, and other noncreature spells into surveil 1, improving draws while filling card types for delirium. With four or more card types among cards in your graveyard, it becomes 3/3, gains flying, and attacks each combat if able.
- Timing: Lead early when you have noncreature follow-ups such as Lightning Bolt, Faithless Looting, Expressive Iteration, Spell Pierce, Lava Dart, Combat Research, or Seal of Removal; delay if forced attacks from delirium will lose it into a larger blocker.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs top-card filtering, graveyard stock, and eventually evasive pressure.
- Partners / packages: Unholy Heat also checks four or more card types among cards in your graveyard; Grim Lavamancer, Logic Knot, Lava Dart, Faithless Looting, Maximize Altitude, Maximize Velocity, Detective's Phoenix, and Advanced Reconstruction compete for graveyard cards.
- Role peers: Delver of Secrets is the closest one-mana evasive pressure peer; Faithless Looting is the closest graveyard-selection peer.
- Failure modes: Surveilling away lands or interaction too aggressively can strand Counterspell, Spider-Man 2099, or removal; exiling graveyard cards to Grim Lavamancer or Logic Knot can turn off delirium.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in tempo mirrors and against control; against aggro, surveil toward removal and avoid forced attacks that give up a needed blocker.
Fury
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, free or hard-cast removal creature.
- Role type: interaction-removal; interaction-sweeper; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Use enters damage to divide 4 damage among any number of target creatures and/or planeswalkers, clearing multiple blockers or attackers. Evoke by exiling a red card from your hand when tempo or survival beats card count.
- Timing: Evoke when the opponent's board threatens lethal, blocks a decisive attack, or contains multiple high-value low-toughness creatures; hard-cast when a 3/3 double strike body also matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{R}{R} or exiles a red card from hand; outputs up to 4 divided damage and possibly a double-strike creature if not evoked.
- Partners / packages: Red cards that can be pitch fuel only when less important include extra Maximize Velocity, Reckless Charge, Light Up the Stage, or redundant burn; do not pitch Lightning Bolt, Pyrokinesis, or Ghostfire Slice when they are the live answer.
- Role peers: Pyrokinesis is the closest free divided-damage peer; Brotherhood's End is the sideboard clustered-board peer.
- Failure modes: Fury cannot target players with its enters trigger; divided damage must actually finish targets based on toughness and damage already marked.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus small creature boards; less efficient versus single large creatures where Lightning Axe, Roast, or Unholy Heat with delirium is cleaner.
Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, adventure tempo spell and evasive threat.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Petty Theft returns target nonland permanent an opponent controls to its owner's hand, opening attacks or resetting expensive development; Brazen Borrower is a flash flying 3/1 that can pressure planeswalkers or carry Combat Research but can block only creatures with flying.
- Timing: Use Petty Theft before combat when it clears the key blocker or after opponent investment in an Aura, Equipment, or commander tax; cast Brazen Borrower when flash pressure or an aerial blocker matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U} for Petty Theft or {1}{U}{U} for Brazen Borrower; outputs tempo, a spell cast for triggers, and later evasive damage if adventure sequencing is available.
- Mode map: Petty Theft bounces only target nonland permanent an opponent controls; Brazen Borrower is the creature side with flash and flying, and its blocking restriction makes it poor ground defense.
- Partners / packages: Works with Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, and Spider-Man 2099's nonhand trigger if cast from adventure exile.
- Role peers: Blink of an Eye, Repeal, Vapor Snag, and Seal of Removal overlap on bounce, but each has different target restrictions.
- Failure modes: Reference Oracle is missing as a combined entry, but face metadata supplies the tactical text; do not target your own permanent or a land with Petty Theft.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus expensive commanders, tokens, equipment, and tempo mirrors; weak if the opponent can cheaply replay the permanent without losing the race.
Party Thrasher
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, exile-cast engine role player.
- Role type: engine piece; discard outlet; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Lets noncreature spells you cast from exile have convoke, making Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration's exiled card, Laelia, the Blade Reforged exiles, Cori Mountain Monastery exiles, and Advanced Reconstruction exiles easier to cast. Its first-main trigger can discard a card to exile the top two cards, choose one, and play that card this turn.
- Timing: Deploy when you have creatures to convoke or graveyard-friendly discards; skip the discard if the hand has no expendable card or if holding interaction is more important than temporary access.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; may consume one discarded card; outputs temporary exile access and convoke on noncreature spells cast from exile.
- Partners / packages: Dragon's Rage Channeler, Lava Dart, Faithless Looting flashback, Maximize Altitude jump-start, Maximize Velocity jump-start, Squee, Dubious Monarch, and Detective's Phoenix can make discarded or graveyard cards useful later.
- Role peers: Laelia, the Blade Reforged and Light Up the Stage are closest exile-access peers; Faithless Looting is the closest discard-selection peer.
- Failure modes: Temporary exile cards can be stranded if mana, convoke creatures, or timing is insufficient; discarding Counterspell, Lightning Bolt, or the only land is costly.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in attrition games with board presence; risky against removal-heavy decks if you need it to survive for convoke value.
Volatile Stormdrake
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, disruptive flying role player.
- Role type: interaction-removal; threat/clock; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Exchange control of Volatile Stormdrake and target creature an opponent controls, then get four energy and sacrifice the stolen creature unless you pay energy equal to its mana value. In this deck, it often functions as a two-mana answer to an opposing creature while leaving the opponent a 3/2 flyer.
- Timing: Use when the opposing creature's mana value is low enough to keep with four energy, or when sacrificing it is still worth giving away the Stormdrake; avoid if the opponent can exploit a 3/2 flyer better than the removed creature mattered.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs flying pressure before exchange, creature theft/sacrifice interaction, and four energy that usually only matters for this card.
- Partners / packages: Bounce such as Vapor Snag, Repeal, Blink of an Eye, Withdraw, and Seal of Removal can later manage the Stormdrake if the opponent receives it.
- Role peers: Sinister Concierge and Floodpits Drowner are closest creature-tempo peers; Lightning Axe is the clean large-creature removal peer.
- Failure modes: Targets only target creature an opponent controls; hexproof from activated and triggered abilities does not stop spells; if the exchanged creature has mana value above available energy, you sacrifice it.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against single creatures whose text beats your pressure; poor against go-wide boards and decks happy to attack with a free flyer.
Grim Lavamancer
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana repeatable damage engine.
- Role type: engine piece; reach/finisher; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Turns graveyard surplus into 2 damage to any target with {R}, tap, and exiling two cards from your graveyard, picking off low-toughness creatures or finishing low-life opponents.
- Timing: Cast early if you expect trades and cheap spells to fill the graveyard; activate only when the 2 damage matters more than preserving cards for Logic Knot, Lava Dart, Unholy Heat delirium, Detective's Phoenix bestow, Maximize Altitude jump-start, Maximize Velocity jump-start, Squee, Dubious Monarch, or Advanced Reconstruction.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R} to cast, then {R}, tap, and two graveyard cards per activation; outputs repeatable any-target damage.
- Partners / packages: Faithless Looting, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Occult Epiphany, and cheap interaction fill the graveyard; Lightning Bolt and Lightning Strike combine for reach math.
- Role peers: Lava Dart is the closest one-damage graveyard-use peer; Broadside Bombardiers is the closest repeatable sacrifice reach peer.
- Failure modes: Overusing it can turn off four-card-type delirium for Dragon's Rage Channeler and Unholy Heat or shrink Logic Knot.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against x/1 and x/2 creature decks; against graveyard hate, value it as a fragile 1/1 unless activations are immediately legal.
Loch Mare
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, card-draw and stun utility creature.
- Role type: engine piece; interaction-removal; lifegain/stabilization.
- Deck-specific job: Enters as a 1/2 after three -1/-1 counters, then spends counters to draw cards or tap and stun a target creature. It gives the deck a mana sink that can either reload or lock down a blocker/attacker.
- Timing: Draw with {1}{U} and one counter when you need cards and the body is not under pressure; use {2}{U} and two counters to tap target creature and put a stun counter on it when stopping an attack or opening a key combat step matters more.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; later consumes blue mana and its counters; outputs cards or tempo by tapping and stunning a target creature.
- Mode map: One-counter activated mode draws a card; two-counter activated mode taps target creature and gives it a stun counter, delaying its next untap.
- Partners / packages: Floodpits Drowner can shuffle itself and target creature with a stun counter into libraries; Propaganda makes one stunned creature plus attack taxes harder to overcome.
- Role peers: Floodpits Drowner overlaps on stun tempo; Occult Epiphany and Combat Research overlap on card draw.
- Failure modes: Removing counters increases size but exhausts future activations; it starts small and can be killed before producing mana-sink value.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in midrange stalls; slow against combo or fast burn where spending mana on counters may not affect the decisive axis.
Squee, Dubious Monarch
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, recursive midgame pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; recursion; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks immediately, creates a tapped and attacking 1/1 red Goblin token, and can be cast from graveyard for {3}{R} by exiling four other cards from your graveyard. It sustains pressure after removal and provides bodies for Broadside Bombardiers or Gut, True Soul Zealot.
- Timing: Attack when the Goblin token damage or sacrifice material matters; recast from graveyard only when four other graveyard cards are less valuable than a hasty threat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R}, or {3}{R} plus exiling four other graveyard cards from graveyard; outputs hasty attacks and a temporary combat token each attack.
- Partners / packages: Broadside Bombardiers can sacrifice other creatures; Gut, True Soul Zealot can sacrifice another creature or artifact; Dragon's Rage Channeler, Faithless Looting, and Occult Epiphany help stock the graveyard.
- Role peers: Detective's Phoenix is the closest recursive pressure peer; Laelia, the Blade Reforged is the closest hasty three-mana pressure peer.
- Failure modes: Graveyard recast competes directly with Logic Knot, Grim Lavamancer, Lava Dart, Unholy Heat delirium, Maximize Altitude, Maximize Velocity, and Detective's Phoenix.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against spot removal and attrition; weaker against exile-based graveyard hate and large blockers that make attacks unprofitable.
Floodpits Drowner
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash tempo creature and stun remover.
- Role type: interaction-removal; protection/evasion; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Flash in to tap target creature an opponent controls and put a stun counter on it, buying a turn against attackers or clearing a blocker. Later, {1}{U}, tap can shuffle Floodpits Drowner and target creature with a stun counter into their owners' libraries.
- Timing: Use flash on the opponent's combat step to prevent damage or on your turn before attacks to open a path; save the shuffle activation for a creature with a stun counter that will otherwise take over.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs a vigilant 2/1, tap/stun tempo, and potential library-shuffle removal.
- Partners / packages: Loch Mare can put a stun counter on target creature; Propaganda plus stun effects makes attacking expensive and delayed.
- Role peers: Loch Mare overlaps on stun; Withdraw, Vapor Snag, and Seal of Removal overlap on creature tempo.
- Failure modes: The shuffle activation requires target creature with a stun counter and taps Floodpits Drowner; do not assume it removes an unstunned creature.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against single large attackers and aura/equipment carriers; less impressive against wide boards unless it buys a lethal counterattack.
Mercurial Spelldancer
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core unblockable spell payoff.
- Role type: mechanic payoff; threat/clock; engine payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Accumulates oil counters whenever you cast noncreature spells, connects because it can't be blocked, then can remove two oil counters after combat damage to copy the next instant or sorcery you cast that turn.
- Timing: Deploy before a cheap-spell turn if you can protect it; attack first when it has two oil counters and cast the spell to copy after its combat-damage trigger resolves.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs unblockable damage, oil counters, and copied instants/sorceries after combat damage.
- Partners / packages: Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Ghostfire Slice, Fire // Ice, Unholy Heat, Expressive Iteration, Light Up the Stage, Reckless Charge, Maximize Altitude, Maximize Velocity, and protection such as Turn Aside or Lazotep Plating are high-value follow-ups.
- Role peers: Khenra Spellspear overlaps as a cheap-spell payoff; Leyline of Resonance overlaps on copying single-creature-targeting instants or sorceries.
- Failure modes: The copy setup requires combat damage to a player and removing two oil counters; casting the desired instant or sorcery before combat misses that copy window.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against blockers and control if protected; vulnerable to cheap instant removal before oil counters convert into value.
Nova Hellkite
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, top-end hasty evasive threat and warp card.
- Role type: threat/clock; interaction-removal; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Hard-cast as a flying hasty 4/5 that pings target creature an opponent controls for 1, or warp for {2}{R} to attack now, exile at the next end step, and cast from exile on a later turn. The later exile cast can turn on Spider-Man 2099 and Laelia, the Blade Reforged synergies.
- Timing: Warp when immediate pressure or one damage to a blocker matters and you can plan for the future cast; hard-cast when you need the body to remain through the end step.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{R}{R} or warp {2}{R}; outputs flying haste damage, 1 damage to target creature an opponent controls, and delayed exile access when warped.
- Mode map: Normal cast keeps the creature; warp cast gives a cheaper temporary creature, exiles it at the next end step, then permits casting it from exile later.
- Partners / packages: Spider-Man 2099 rewards the later exile cast; Party Thrasher can convoke noncreature exile spells but not Nova Hellkite; Laelia gets a counter when cards leave exile from library/graveyard, not from hand-warp exile unless engine exposes that condition.
- Role peers: Detective's Phoenix and Brazen Borrower are closest evasive threat peers; Ghostfire Slice is the closest four-damage reach peer.
- Failure modes: The enters damage only hits target creature an opponent controls, not players or planeswalkers.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against planeswalker pressure and stalled skies; weaker when five-mana plays are punished by counters or bounce.
Detective's Phoenix
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, recursive evasive threat and bestow payoff.
- Role type: threat/clock; recursion; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Attack as a flying haste 2/2, or from graveyard use bestow for {R} and collect evidence 6 to enchant a creature with +2/+2, flying, and haste. Bestow turns Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or Khenra Spellspear into a fast evasive clock.
- Timing: Cast as a creature when pressure is needed now; bestow from graveyard when you have cards with total mana value 6 or greater to exile and a creature that safely benefits from flying/haste.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R}, or {R} plus exiling graveyard cards with total mana value 6 or greater for collect evidence 6; outputs evasive haste or an Aura-like power/evasion boost.
- Mode map: Creature cast gives a 2/2 flying haste enchantment creature; bestow from graveyard enchants a creature and grants +2/+2, flying, and haste.
- Partners / packages: Faithless Looting, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Occult Epiphany, and combat trades fill the graveyard; Combat Research becomes easier to trigger on the enchanted creature.
- Role peers: Squee, Dubious Monarch is the closest recursive pressure peer; Maximize Altitude is the closest temporary flying peer.
- Failure modes: Collect evidence competes with Logic Knot, Grim Lavamancer, Lava Dart, Unholy Heat delirium, Squee, and Advanced Reconstruction.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent after removal trades; weaker against graveyard hate and exile removal.
Laelia, the Blade Reforged
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core hasty exile-pressure engine.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine piece; mechanic payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Attack to exile the top card of your library and play it this turn, while growing whenever one or more cards are put into exile from your library and/or graveyard. She pressures life totals and supplies nonhand plays for Spider-Man 2099.
- Timing: Cast when she can attack immediately or when protection is available; sequence post-attack mana so the exiled card can be played before the turn ends.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R}; outputs haste damage, temporary exile access, and +1/+1 counters from exile events involving your library and/or graveyard.
- Partners / packages: Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, Advanced Reconstruction, Cori Mountain Monastery, Logic Knot, Grim Lavamancer, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Detective's Phoenix, and Lava Dart can involve exiling cards from library and/or graveyard depending on exact action.
- Role peers: Spider-Man 2099 is the closest exile-play payoff; Party Thrasher is the closest temporary exile-access peer.
- Failure modes: Exiled cards are time-sensitive; attacking into profitable blocks before she grows wastes the engine.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against midrange and control if unanswered; against aggro, cast only if haste plus possible card access beats spending mana on removal or Propaganda.
Delver of Secrets
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana pressure core piece.
- Role type: threat/clock; mechanic payoff; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Starts early pressure and transforms at upkeep if you look at the top card and may reveal an instant or sorcery card. The deck has many instant/sorcery hits, including Lightning Bolt, Counterspell, Expressive Iteration, Faithless Looting, Fire // Ice, and Vapor Snag.
- Timing: Best on turn one from Island, Command Tower, Shivan Reef, or other untapped blue source; use Temple of Epiphany, Dragon's Rage Channeler surveil, or Spectacle Summit surveil to improve the top card when possible.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs early damage and, if transformed, a 3/2 flyer.
- Mode map: Front face Delver of Secrets is a 1/1 with upkeep look/may reveal transform text; back face Insectile Aberration is a 3/2 flying creature.
- Partners / packages: Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Mana Leak, Vapor Snag, Lightning Bolt, and Unholy Heat protect its tempo lead.
- Role peers: Dragon's Rage Channeler is the closest one-mana threat; Detective's Phoenix is the closest evasive haste pressure.
- Failure modes: Reference Oracle is missing as a combined entry, but face metadata supplies transform text; revealing a non-instant/sorcery does not transform it, and it is fragile before transforming.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against control and combo as early clock; against aggro, may need to block or wait behind removal.
Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, blue spell payoff and temporary mana resource.
- Role type: threat/clock; mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Grows until end of turn whenever you cast a blue spell while he is a creature, then at your end step untaps and becomes a land with "{T}: Add {U}" until your next turn. This lets the deck pressure on your turn and hold blue interaction on the opponent's turn.
- Timing: Cast when double blue is available and you can chain blue spells such as Spell Pierce, Vapor Snag, Repeal, Counterspell, Combat Research, Expressive Iteration, or Spider-Sense; remember he is not a creature during the opponent's turn after the end-step trigger.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{U}; outputs temporary power boosts from blue spells and blue mana while land-mode lasts.
- Partners / packages: Combat Research and Clout of the Dominus are strong while he is a creature; Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, Turn Aside, and Lazotep Plating benefit from extra blue mana on the opponent's turn.
- Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Restless Spire and Wandering Fumarole as land/creature role-shifters.
- Failure modes: Auras and equipment timing can be awkward because he stops being a creature until your next turn; he only pumps from blue spells while he is a creature.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in tempo mirrors where holding blue mana matters; less reliable against sorcery-speed removal on your turn.
Kari Zev, Skyship Raider
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, early evasive-ish pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks through some boards with first strike and menace, creating Ragavan, a legendary 2/1 red Monkey token tapped and attacking that is exiled at end of combat. The temporary token adds damage and can be sacrificed before exile if a legal Broadside Bombardiers or Gut, True Soul Zealot line exists.
- Timing: Cast on turn two when attacking next turn is likely; avoid attacks into boards that can block both Kari Zev and token profitably without advancing damage.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs repeat attacking material and pressure without spending more cards.
- Partners / packages: Broadside Bombardiers can sacrifice another creature after attacking; Gut, True Soul Zealot can sacrifice another creature or artifact when you attack; Combat Research on Kari Zev is possible but needs combat-damage confidence.
- Role peers: Loyal Apprentice is the closest repeat-token peer; Squee, Dubious Monarch is the closest hasty token-attacker peer.
- Failure modes: Ragavan is exiled at end of combat, so do not plan to keep it for blocking; Kari Zev's 1 power can be slow without support.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control and slower decks; weaker against cheap first strike blockers, large boards, or sweepers.
Gut, True Soul Zealot
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, sacrifice-conversion attacker and pressure role player.
- Role type: engine payoff; engine fuel/material; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Whenever you attack, you may sacrifice another creature or artifact to create a tapped and attacking 4/1 black Skeleton creature token with menace. It upgrades expendable tokens or artifacts into immediate combat pressure.
- Timing: Use the trigger when sacrificing the material improves damage, dodges removal, or converts a temporary token before it disappears; decline when the sacrificed permanent is needed as a blocker, engine, or protected carrier.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R}; optional attack trigger consumes another creature or artifact; outputs a 4/1 menace tapped-and-attacking Skeleton.
- Partners / packages: Loyal Apprentice Thopter tokens, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider's Ragavan token, Force of Rage Elemental tokens, Lazotep Plating Zombie Army, Occult Epiphany Spirit tokens, and expendable equipment only when truly expendable can feed it.
- Role peers: Broadside Bombardiers is the closest sacrifice payoff; Squee, Dubious Monarch is the closest attacking-token pressure peer.
- Failure modes: Sacrificing a key blocker or Combat Research carrier can lose the race; Choose a Background text has no registered Background partner in this deck.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong when racing or punishing planeswalkers; weaker against instant-speed removal before combat and boards that can absorb a 4/1 menace token.
Loyal Apprentice
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, commander-dependent token pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: With Spider-Man 2099 under your control, creates a 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature token with flying and haste at the beginning of combat on your turn. Those tokens add aerial damage and provide artifact creature material for Broadside Bombardiers or Gut, True Soul Zealot.
- Timing: Cast early if you expect to play Spider-Man 2099 on schedule; if commander tax or removal makes the commander unlikely, value it as a hasty 2/1 rather than an engine.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs a hasty body and, with commander present, recurring flying artifact creature tokens.
- Partners / packages: Spider-Man 2099 enables lieutenant; Broadside Bombardiers and Gut, True Soul Zealot can consume Thopters; Combat Research can turn flyers into cards if attached safely.
- Role peers: Kari Zev, Skyship Raider and Squee, Dubious Monarch are closest repeat-token pressure peers.
- Failure modes: Lieutenant trigger requires controlling your commander at the beginning of combat; do not overcommit tokens into Brotherhood's End or other sweepers.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control if commander sticks; against aggro, use tokens as blockers or sacrifice material only when life math supports it.
Khenra Spellspear
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap spell payoff and transform threat.
- Role type: mechanic payoff; threat/clock; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Uses trample and prowess to turn cheap noncreature spells into combat damage, then can transform at sorcery speed for {3}{U/P} into Gitaxian Spellstalker, a 3/3 with trample, ward {2}, and two prowess instances.
- Timing: Deploy before a spell-heavy turn; transform only when sorcery-speed mana or 2 life for Phyrexian blue is worth upgrading the threat and still leaves enough interaction or pump.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; each noncreature spell adds prowess; transform consumes {3}{U/P}; output is a scaling trampler with ward after transformation.
- Mode map: Front face Khenra Spellspear has trample and one prowess; activated transform is sorcery-speed and can use {U} or 2 life; back face Gitaxian Spellstalker has trample, ward {2}, and prowess twice.
- Partners / packages: Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, Maximize Altitude, Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Spell Pierce, Combat Research, and Leyline of Resonance can create burst turns.
- Role peers: Mercurial Spelldancer is the closest cheap-spell payoff; Dragon's Rage Channeler is the closest one-mana pressure enabler.
- Failure modes: Reference Oracle is missing as a combined entry, but face metadata supplies transform text; paying 2 life for {U/P} is dangerous against burn or aggro.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus decks with few blockers; ward matters against targeted removal but not sweepers or edicts.
Swiftfoot Boots
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, protective Equipment role player.
- Role type: protection/evasion; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Gives equipped creature hexproof and haste, letting Spider-Man 2099, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Khenra Spellspear, or Nova Hellkite attack or survive targeted opposing spells and abilities.
- Timing: Cast or equip when a specific creature is worth protecting; avoid spending turn two on Boots if you need to deploy Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Counterspell, or removal.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2} to cast and {1} to equip at sorcery speed to target creature you control; outputs hexproof and haste while equipped.
- Partners / packages: Combat Research and Clout of the Dominus can stack with Boots, but shroud from Clout of the Dominus may later interfere with equip or friendly target spells.
- Role peers: Mirror Shield is the closest Equipment peer; Lazotep Plating and Turn Aside are instant protection peers.
- Failure modes: Hexproof does not stop sweepers, edicts, combat damage, or your own need to target the creature before equipping; equip only as a sorcery.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against spot-removal decks; weaker when opponent uses non-targeting sweepers or sacrifice effects.
Mirror Shield
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, protective Equipment and anti-deathtouch role player.
- Role type: protection/evasion; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Gives +0/+2, hexproof, and a deathtouch-blocker punishment trigger, making key attackers harder to target and safer in combat against deathtouch creatures. Best on Spider-Man 2099, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Khenra Spellspear, or Combat Research carriers.
- Timing: Equip when the +0/+2 or hexproof changes removal/combat math; avoid spending {2} equip mana when holding Counterspell, Mana Leak, or Lightning Bolt is more urgent.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2} to cast and {2} to equip at sorcery speed to target creature you control; outputs toughness, hexproof, and deathtouch combat insurance.
- Partners / packages: True-Name Nemesis rarely needs hexproof from the chosen opponent but may value +0/+2; Combat Research carriers value durability.
- Role peers: Swiftfoot Boots is the closest Equipment peer; Lazotep Plating is the closest broad hexproof peer.
- Failure modes: Equip only as a sorcery; hexproof does not answer sweepers or edicts; deathtouch trigger matters only when a creature with deathtouch blocks or becomes blocked by equipped creature.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus targeted removal and deathtouch blockers; low value versus combo or decks with non-targeting answers.
Pyrokinesis
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, free tempo removal spell.
- Role type: interaction-removal; interaction-sweeper.
- Deck-specific job: Exile a red card from hand instead of paying {4}{R}{R} to divide 4 damage among any number of target creatures, clearing small boards, blockers, or lethal attackers without tapping mana.
- Timing: Use the alternate cost when preserving mana for Counterspell, Spider-Sense, or a tempo turn matters more than the pitched red card; hard-cast only in long games with excess mana.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes either {4}{R}{R} or a red card from hand; outputs 4 divided damage to target creatures only.
- Partners / packages: Fury overlaps on free divided damage; Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Fire // Ice, and Brotherhood's End can combine damage on larger boards.
- Role peers: Fury is the closest free multi-target removal peer; Fire // Ice is the smaller flexible split-damage peer.
- Failure modes: Cannot hit players or planeswalkers; pitching the only red card or a key reach spell can cost lethal later.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against go-wide creature starts; poor against spell combo, control, and single large threats outside 4 total damage.
Counterspell
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core hard permission.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Counter target spell on the stack with no tax condition, protecting the current clock or stopping the opponent's decisive play.
- Timing: Hold for sweepers, commanders, combo payoffs, removal aimed at Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis support, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or a Combat Research carrier; do not spend on low-impact setup if removal handles the board.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{U}; outputs a clean one-for-one answer to a spell on the stack.
- Partners / packages: Mana Leak, Spell Pierce, Negate, Logic Knot, Wash Away, Turn Aside, Spider-Sense, Dispel, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Hydroblast form the permission suite with different restrictions.
- Role peers: Logic Knot is closest as broad counter with graveyard fuel; Mana Leak is broad but tax-based.
- Failure modes: Requires double blue; cannot answer a resolved permanent; tapping out for double-blue protection can slow pressure.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against combo, control, sweepers, and high-impact commanders; against low-curve creature decks, compare to spending mana on burn or Propaganda.
Spell Pierce
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap tempo permission.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target noncreature spell unless its controller pays {2}, protecting early threats from removal, stopping early planeswalkers/enchantments/artifacts on the stack, or winning cheap counter fights.
- Timing: Highest value turns one through four or when opponent taps low; use proactively to defend Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Mercurial Spelldancer, Combat Research, or Spider-Man 2099.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs a tax counter for a noncreature spell on the stack.
- Partners / packages: Pairs well with early pressure from Delver of Secrets, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Loyal Apprentice, and True-Name Nemesis.
- Role peers: Mana Leak is broader but costs {1}{U}; Negate is noncreature hard permission but costs {1}{U}.
- Failure modes: Cannot target creature spells; loses value when opponent has spare {2}; cannot answer resolved permanents.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against control and combo while ahead; sideboard out more often against creature-heavy decks with excess mana.
Occult Epiphany
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, scalable card-flow and token-maker flex slot.
- Role type: card selection; discard outlet; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: Draw X cards, discard X cards, then create a 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying for each card type among cards discarded this way. It reloads while producing evasive material for Combat Research, Broadside Bombardiers, or Gut, True Soul Zealot.
- Timing: Cast at instant speed when holding up permission was unnecessary or at end step after the opponent passes; choose X based on available mana and how many cards can be profitably discarded.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {X}{U} and discarded cards; outputs new cards, graveyard fuel, and flying Spirit tokens counted by card type among discarded cards.
- Partners / packages: Discarded Lava Dart, Faithless Looting, Maximize Altitude, Maximize Velocity, Squee, Dubious Monarch, and Detective's Phoenix may retain later utility; tokens work with Combat Research, Broadside Bombardiers, and Gut, True Soul Zealot.
- Role peers: Faithless Looting is cheaper draw-discard; Light Up the Stage and Expressive Iteration are lower-mana velocity peers.
- Failure modes: X=0 does nothing meaningful; discarding needed lands, counters, or removal for token count can lose the next turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in slower games; against aggro, cast only after survival is secured with removal, Propaganda, or Aetherize.
Lightning Bolt
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core one-mana removal and reach.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 3 damage to any target, killing early creatures, finishing planeswalkers, or closing the opponent after combat.
- Timing: Spend on creatures that stop your clock or threaten life; hold for face only when visible damage math makes it lethal or forces lethal next turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs 3 damage to any target and a cheap noncreature spell trigger for Dragon's Rage Channeler, Khenra Spellspear, Mercurial Spelldancer, and Leyline of Resonance only if it targets a single creature you control, which Bolt usually does not.
- Partners / packages: Lava Dart, Lightning Strike, Ghostfire Slice, Grim Lavamancer, Fire // Ice, and Broadside Bombardiers combine for reach.
- Role peers: Lightning Strike is the closest three-damage any-target peer at {1}{R}; Ghostfire Slice is the bigger four-damage peer.
- Failure modes: Pointing Bolt at the opponent while a must-kill creature wins the race is a common punt; damage does not shrink power/toughness.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium versus aggro and planeswalkers; against control, preserve as reach unless a threat must die.
Spider-Sense
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, specialized stack interaction and commander-flavored protection.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target instant spell, sorcery spell, or triggered ability. Web-slinging lets you cast it for {U} if you also return a tapped creature you control to its owner's hand, potentially saving a tapped attacker while countering a key spell or trigger.
- Timing: Hold for removal, sweepers that are instant/sorcery spells, lethal burn, or triggered abilities that would break your board; web-sling when bouncing the tapped creature is beneficial or acceptable.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}, or {U} plus returning a tapped creature you control for web-slinging; outputs a counter to a restricted spell/ability class.
- Mode map: Normal cast pays {1}{U}; web-slinging pays {U} and returns a tapped creature you control as part of the alternate access condition.
- Partners / packages: Protects Spider-Man 2099, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Mercurial Spelldancer, True-Name Nemesis support pieces, and Combat Research carriers from eligible stack actions.
- Role peers: Turn Aside protects permanents from targeted spells; Counterspell counters any target spell; Stifle-like triggered ability coverage has no direct peer.
- Failure modes: Does not counter creature spells, artifact spells, enchantment spells, planeswalker spells, or activated abilities unless they are also covered by legal text.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus instant/sorcery removal and dangerous triggers; weaker against permanent-based threats.
Lava Dart
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap ping, flashback reach, and graveyard resource.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 1 damage to any target, then can be flashed back from graveyard by sacrificing a Mountain you control; useful for x/1 creatures, finishing damaged creatures, triggering noncreature-spell payoffs twice, and enabling Spider-Man 2099 from graveyard.
- Timing: Save for combat math, lethal reach, or a must-kill x/1; flash back only when sacrificing Mountain is better than future red mana.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; flashback consumes sacrificing a Mountain you control and exiles Lava Dart after resolution; outputs 1 damage per cast.
- Mode map: Hand cast pays {R}; flashback casts from graveyard by sacrificing a Mountain you control, then exiles Lava Dart.
- Partners / packages: Mountain, Molten Tributary, and any land with Basic Land — Mountain type if present are relevant to flashback; Dragon's Rage Channeler, Khenra Spellspear, Mercurial Spelldancer, and Leyline of Resonance care about cheap spells.
- Role peers: Grim Lavamancer is the repeatable small-damage peer; Lightning Bolt is the efficient larger-damage peer.
- Failure modes: Do not sacrifice the only Mountain needed for red spells or future land count; one damage does not kill larger creatures without marked damage.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus mana dorks and tokens; weak against large creatures unless combined with other damage.
Lazotep Plating
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, broad instant protection and token material.
- Role type: protection/evasion; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: Gives you and permanents you control hexproof until end of turn while amassing Zombies 1, protecting Spider-Man 2099, Combat Research carriers, equipment, Leyline of Resonance, or lands from targeted opposing spells/abilities.
- Timing: Hold for a targeted removal spell, discard spell targeting you, burn to face, or ability targeting a key permanent; casting just for a Zombie Army is usually too low-impact.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs hexproof for you and permanents you control plus a 0/0 Army with a +1/+1 counter if you do not already control an Army.
- Partners / packages: Turn Aside, Counterspell, Spider-Sense, Swiftfoot Boots, and Mirror Shield are other protection pieces; the Army can feed Broadside Bombardiers or Gut, True Soul Zealot later.
- Role peers: Turn Aside is cheaper but only counters a spell targeting a permanent you control; Swiftfoot Boots and Mirror Shield are permanent hexproof sources.
- Failure modes: Hexproof does not stop sweepers, edicts, combat damage, or non-targeting effects; it does not counter spells already targeting only opponent-controlled objects.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against targeted removal, burn, discard, and ability-heavy decks; weaker against creature swarms and sweepers.
Wash Away
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana anti-nonhand counter with cleave flexibility.
- Role type: interaction-stack; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: For {U}, counters target spell that wasn't cast from its owner's hand, covering commanders, flashback, adventure-from-exile, cascade-like, graveyard, and other nonhand casts. With cleave {1}{U}{U}, it counters target spell without that restriction.
- Timing: Hold one blue against commanders or graveyard/exile cast decks; cleave only when the spell is worth a three-mana hard counter and double blue is available.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U} restricted or {1}{U}{U} cleaved; outputs a counter to a spell on the stack.
- Mode map: Normal cast targets only a spell that wasn't cast from its owner's hand; cleave removes that restriction and targets any spell.
- Partners / packages: Counterspell and Logic Knot cover broader stack fights; Grafdigger's Cage after sideboard attacks graveyard/library casting from a permanent angle.
- Role peers: Counterspell is the clean hard-counter peer; Spell Pierce and Mana Leak are cheaper/tax peers.
- Failure modes: Normal mode cannot counter a spell cast from hand; cleave asks for double blue and three mana.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium in Commander because opposing commanders are usually cast from command zone; also good versus flashback and graveyard decks.
Ghostfire Slice
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, large flexible burn role player.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 4 damage to any target and costs {2} less if an opponent controls a multicolored permanent. Devoid means the card has no color even though its cost includes red.
- Timing: Use discounted one-red mode when opponent's multicolored permanent is visible; otherwise reserve three mana for creatures, planeswalkers, or lethal reach where 4 damage is uniquely important.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R} or {R} with the opponent multicolored-permanent discount; outputs 4 damage to any target.
- Partners / packages: Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Lava Dart, Fire // Ice, Grim Lavamancer, and Broadside Bombardiers combine for lethal math.
- Role peers: Lightning Strike is cheaper but 3 damage; Flame Slash and Roast are creature-only sorcery peers with higher creature damage.
- Failure modes: Devoid means it cannot be exiled to pay Fury, Pyrokinesis, or Force of Rage alternate costs as a red card; discount requires an opponent to control a multicolored permanent.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against multicolored commanders and midrange bodies; against mono-color low-curve decks it may be clunky.
Fire // Ice
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, split-card removal, tap tempo, and cantrip.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Fire deals 2 damage divided as you choose among one or two targets; Ice taps target permanent and draws a card. Fire cleans x/1 or x/2 creatures or finishes damaged targets, while Ice buys tempo against a blocker, attacker, Restless Spire, Wandering Fumarole, or utility permanent and replaces itself.
- Timing: Use Fire before combat to clear blockers or during combat to punish blocks; use Ice on upkeep/combat to tap the most relevant permanent when a card redraw is worth two mana.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R} for Fire or {1}{U} for Ice; outputs damage or tap plus one draw.
- Mode map: Fire is split damage among one or two targets; Ice taps target permanent and draws a card.
- Partners / packages: Dragon's Rage Channeler, Khenra Spellspear, Mercurial Spelldancer, and Leyline of Resonance like cheap instants; Lightning Bolt and Lava Dart combine with Fire damage.
- Role peers: Lava Dart is the small damage peer; Repeal and Blink of an Eye are tempo-cantrip peers with different target restrictions.
- Failure modes: Reference Oracle is missing as a combined entry, but face metadata supplies mode text; Fire's 2 damage total cannot kill larger creatures without help.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against x/1 and x/2 boards or single key blockers; Ice is useful against big mana by tapping a land at the right window.
Force of Rage
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, free defensive or surprise pressure spell.
- Role type: threat/clock; interaction-sweeper; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: Creates two 3/1 red Elemental creature tokens with trample and haste, sacrificed at the beginning of your next upkeep. If it is not your turn, you may exile a red card from hand rather than pay {1}{R}{R}.
- Timing: Cast on opponent's turn for free when surprise blockers, lethal crackback, sacrifice fodder, or pressure matters more than the pitched red card; on your turn it is a three-mana burst spell.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}{R} or exiles a red card from hand off-turn; outputs two temporary trampling hasty 3/1 tokens.
- Partners / packages: Broadside Bombardiers and Gut, True Soul Zealot can use temporary Elementals before they are sacrificed; Combat Research is usually poor because tokens disappear.
- Role peers: Pyrokinesis and Fury are pitch tempo peers; Squee, Dubious Monarch and Kari Zev, Skyship Raider are repeat combat-material peers.
- Failure modes: Tokens are sacrificed at the beginning of your next upkeep, not kept for long-term board; pitching a red answer can lose the next exchange.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in races and surprise combat; weak against sweepers, fogs, and decks that ignore creature combat.
Repeal
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, scalable bounce-cantrip.
- Role type: interaction-removal; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Returns target nonland permanent with mana value X to its owner's hand and draws a card, letting the deck reset tokens, cheap blockers, equipment carriers, or expensive permanents if enough mana is available.
- Timing: Use when bounce changes combat, saves life, or undoes a high-investment permanent; avoid spending mana just to cycle unless the target is low mana value and the hand needs velocity.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {X}{U}; outputs a bounced nonland permanent with mana value exactly X and one drawn card.
- Partners / packages: Spider-Man 2099 benefits if Repeal helps enable a nonhand play later; Dragon's Rage Channeler, Khenra Spellspear, and Mercurial Spelldancer trigger from casting it.
- Role peers: Blink of an Eye is broader on mana value but only draws if kicked; Vapor Snag is cheaper but creature-only.
- Failure modes: Cannot target lands; X must match the target's mana value; high-value targets demand lots of mana.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against tokens and expensive suited-up threats; weaker against cheap enters-trigger creatures.
Vapor Snag
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana creature tempo and reach.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Returns target creature to its owner's hand and makes its controller lose 1 life, clearing blockers, resetting commanders, saving your own creature in emergencies, or adding lethal reach.
- Timing: Use before combat to open attacks, after opponent invests pump/equipment/aura, or defensively before damage; target your own creature only when saving it is worth losing your tempo.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs creature bounce and 1 life loss to that creature's controller.
- Partners / packages: Delver of Secrets, True-Name Nemesis, Spider-Man 2099, Mercurial Spelldancer, and Laelia, the Blade Reforged convert the tempo into damage.
- Role peers: Seal of Removal is pre-positioned creature bounce; Withdraw can bounce two creatures; Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft hits nonland permanents an opponent controls.
- Failure modes: Creature returns to hand, so cheap creatures may be replayed; life loss hits the controller, so targeting your own creature costs you 1 life.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus commanders, tokens, and aura/equipment creatures; less effective against cheap value creatures.
Unholy Heat
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, efficient creature/planeswalker removal.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 2 damage to target creature or planeswalker, or 6 damage instead if there are four or more card types among cards in your graveyard. It is a premium answer once Dragon's Rage Channeler, Faithless Looting, fetches, artifacts, enchantments, creatures, instants, and sorceries stock types.
- Timing: Use early for small must-kill creatures; preserve for larger commanders or planeswalkers if delirium is nearly active.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs 2 or 6 damage to target creature or planeswalker based on four-card-type graveyard condition.
- Partners / packages: Dragon's Rage Channeler surveil, Faithless Looting, Fabled Passage, Seal of Removal, Combat Research, Swiftfoot Boots, and creature trades add different card types; Grim Lavamancer and Logic Knot can remove needed types.
- Role peers: Flame Slash and Roast are sorcery creature-removal peers; Lightning Axe is a five-damage instant creature peer with discard/pay cost.
- Failure modes: Cannot target players; damage amount falls back to 2 if graveyard types drop below four before resolution.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus midrange commanders and planeswalkers; against graveyard hate, treat as two-damage removal.
Blink of an Eye
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flexible bounce spell with kicker card draw.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Returns target nonland permanent to its owner's hand; if kicked for {1}{U}, draws a card. It clears blockers, resets expensive permanents, saves your own permanent, or buys time against resolved nonland threats.
- Timing: Cast unkicked when tempo or mana efficiency matters; kick when you can still hold needed interaction or when replacing the card is worth the extra two mana.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}, plus optional kicker {1}{U}; outputs nonland permanent bounce and, if kicked, one draw.
- Mode map: Unkicked mode is pure bounce; kicked mode is bounce plus draw.
- Partners / packages: Dragon's Rage Channeler, Khenra Spellspear, Mercurial Spelldancer, and Leyline of Resonance care that it is an instant, though Leyline copies only if it targets only a single creature you control.
- Role peers: Repeal draws without kicker but needs X equal to mana value; Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft hits only opponent nonland permanents.
- Failure modes: Returning a low-mana permanent can be low value if opponent recasts it immediately; kicked line can tap you out.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus expensive commanders, tokens, and suited-up permanents; weaker against enters-trigger creatures.
Lightning Axe
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, large instant creature removal and discard outlet.
- Role type: interaction-removal; discard outlet.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 5 damage to target creature for {R}, with additional cost to discard a card or pay {5}. It removes large blockers/attackers while putting graveyard-use cards into the graveyard.
- Timing: Cast when a creature must die and the discarded card has low immediate value or later graveyard value; pay {5} only in long games where every card in hand matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R} plus discard or {5}; outputs 5 damage to target creature.
- Partners / packages: Good discards can include Lava Dart, Faithless Looting, Maximize Altitude, Maximize Velocity, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Detective's Phoenix, or excess lands; do not discard Counterspell or a needed land casually.
- Role peers: Roast is sorcery five-damage nonflyer removal; Flame Slash is sorcery four-damage creature removal; Unholy Heat can reach 6 with delirium.
- Failure modes: Cannot target players or planeswalkers; discard is an additional cost, so a countered Axe still costs the card.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against big creature decks; less useful versus creature-light control or token swarms.
Lightning Strike
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flexible burn role player.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 3 damage to any target, serving as a second Lightning Bolt-style effect for creature removal, planeswalker pressure, or lethal reach.
- Timing: Use on creatures when they block your protected attacker or threaten a short clock; save for opponent life total when the board is stable and three damage closes or forces lethal.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs 3 damage to any target.
- Partners / packages: Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Ghostfire Slice, Fire // Ice, Grim Lavamancer, and Broadside Bombardiers combine for burn math.
- Role peers: Lightning Bolt is the cheaper direct peer; Ghostfire Slice is larger but often costs more.
- Failure modes: Two mana is a real cost in counterspell turns; damage does not reduce power/toughness, so account for marked damage and toughness.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Flexible in nearly every matchup; against control, hold for end-step pressure or lethal rather than medium creatures unless necessary.
Logic Knot
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, graveyard-powered permission.
- Role type: interaction-stack; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell unless its controller pays {X}, with delve letting you exile cards from your graveyard to pay generic mana. It turns graveyard stock into a scalable counter.
- Timing: Use when a decisive spell must be stopped and the opponent cannot pay the chosen X; preserve graveyard if future Lava Dart, Grim Lavamancer, Unholy Heat delirium, Detective's Phoenix, Squee, or Advanced Reconstruction is stronger.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {X}{U}{U} reduced by exiling graveyard cards for {1} each via delve; outputs tax-based counter to a spell on the stack.
- Partners / packages: Faithless Looting, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Fabled Passage, Occult Epiphany, and cheap trades fuel delve.
- Role peers: Counterspell is the hard-counter peer; Mana Leak is the fixed tax peer.
- Failure modes: Exiling too many or wrong card types can turn off Dragon's Rage Channeler, Unholy Heat, Grim Lavamancer, Squee, Detective's Phoenix, and Advanced Reconstruction.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in long games and against big spells when graveyard is stocked; weaker early without double blue or fuel.
Mana Leak
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, broad tempo permission.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell unless its controller pays {3}, covering any spell type early while your threats pressure life.
- Timing: Best while the opponent is mana-constrained or tapping out; use on early commanders, sweepers, planeswalkers, or removal that breaks your current clock.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs a {3} tax counter on a spell on the stack.
- Partners / packages: Early threats such as Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Loyal Apprentice, Mercurial Spelldancer, and True-Name Nemesis make the tempo trade matter.
- Role peers: Spell Pierce is cheaper but noncreature only and taxes {2}; Logic Knot is scalable but spends graveyard.
- Failure modes: Falls off when opponent has spare mana; cannot answer resolved permanents.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus curve-out decks, control, and commander recasts early; board out or deprioritize against big mana once they can pay.
Negate
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, noncreature hard permission.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target noncreature spell, protecting your threat from removal, stopping sweepers, planeswalkers, artifacts, enchantments, tutors, and combo pieces on the stack.
- Timing: Hold for noncreature spells that beat your current board or win the game; do not use on low-impact card selection if the opponent has a bigger noncreature payoff coming.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs a hard counter to a noncreature spell on the stack.
- Partners / packages: Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, Spell Pierce, Counterspell, Mana Leak, and Dispel cover related protection windows with different restrictions.
- Role peers: Spell Pierce is cheaper but tax-based; Counterspell is broader but double blue.
- Failure modes: Cannot counter creature spells and cannot answer a resolved permanent.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus control, combo, sweepers, and removal-heavy decks; weaker against creature swarms where burn and bounce matter more.
Turn Aside
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, narrow one-mana protection.
- Role type: protection/evasion; interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell that targets a permanent you control, protecting Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis support pieces, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, or lands from targeted spells.
- Timing: Hold when your current permanent is winning or when losing it collapses the turn; do not spend on a replaceable creature if Counterspell or removal is needed for the actual threat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs a counter to a spell on the stack only if that spell targets a permanent you control.
- Partners / packages: Combat Research and Clout of the Dominus increase the need for protection; Lazotep Plating protects more broadly but costs {1}{U}.
- Role peers: Lazotep Plating is broader against targeting but does not counter; Spider-Sense handles instant/sorcery spells or triggered abilities.
- Failure modes: Does not counter abilities, non-targeting spells, edicts, sweepers, or spells targeting you rather than a permanent.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against spot removal and bounce; weak against creature decks with few targeted answers.
Withdraw
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, two-creature tempo interaction.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Returns target creature to its owner's hand, then returns another target creature to its owner's hand unless its controller pays {1}. It can clear two blockers, save one of your creatures while bouncing theirs, or punish tapped-out opponents.
- Timing: Cast when the second target's controller cannot or should not pay {1}, or when the guaranteed first bounce is already worth {U}{U}.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{U}; outputs one guaranteed creature bounce plus a second conditional creature bounce.
- Partners / packages: Works with Delver of Secrets, Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, and Laelia, the Blade Reforged by opening attacks.
- Role peers: Vapor Snag is cheaper single-creature bounce; Seal of Removal is pre-positioned; Aetherize after sideboard punishes all attacking creatures.
- Failure modes: Requires two targets if the engine presents it that way; double blue can strain mana; second bounce can be stopped by {1} payment.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus creature tempo and aura/equipment boards; weaker versus creature-light decks and enters-trigger value creatures.
Faithless Looting
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap card selection and graveyard setup.
- Role type: card selection; discard outlet; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Draw two cards, then discard two cards, smoothing early hands and placing Lava Dart, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Detective's Phoenix, Reckless Charge, Maximize Altitude, Maximize Velocity, or excess lands into graveyard when those cards have later use.
- Timing: Cast when you need land/action selection or have discard value; avoid casting just to spend mana if every card in hand is needed. Flashback for {2}{R} later when the graveyard card is worth exiling after resolution.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; flashback consumes {2}{R} from graveyard and exiles Faithless Looting after resolution; outputs two draws and two discards.
- Mode map: Hand cast is cheap selection; flashback is the same effect from graveyard for {2}{R}, then exile.
- Partners / packages: Dragon's Rage Channeler, Unholy Heat, Grim Lavamancer, Logic Knot, Detective's Phoenix, Squee, Lava Dart, Advanced Reconstruction, Maximize Altitude, and Maximize Velocity all care about graveyard state.
- Role peers: Occult Epiphany is scalable draw-discard; Expressive Iteration is card selection without discard.
- Failure modes: Drawing then discarding means it does not discard a card before those two cards are drawn; discarding interaction or lands can lose tempo.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in grindy games; against burn or aggro, do not spend mana and cards if removal/blockers are needed.
Light Up the Stage
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, exile-card velocity role player.
- Role type: card selection; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: After opponent lost life this turn, spectacle casts for {R} to exile the top two cards and let you play them until the end of your next turn. Those nonhand plays can trigger Spider-Man 2099 and support Laelia-style exile pressure.
- Timing: Cast after combat damage, Lava Dart, Lightning Bolt, Vapor Snag life loss, or other damage enables spectacle; only cast when enough mana or next-turn planning can use the exiled cards.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R} or spectacle {R}; outputs temporary access to two exiled cards, including possible land plays.
- Mode map: Normal cost is {2}{R}; spectacle cost {R} is available if an opponent lost life this turn.
- Partners / packages: Spider-Man 2099, Party Thrasher, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Cori Mountain Monastery, and Advanced Reconstruction share nonhand/exile-play themes.
- Role peers: Expressive Iteration is the closest two-card selection peer; Laelia is repeatable attack-based exile access.
- Failure modes: Exiled cards are lost after the next turn's window if unplayed; casting before land sequencing can strand a land or spell.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong when ahead or trading damage; weak when behind on board and unable to spend mana on exiled cards.
Expressive Iteration
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premium card selection and exile-play enabler.
- Role type: card selection; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Looks at top three cards, puts one into hand, one on bottom, and one into exile to play this turn. It smooths land drops, finds interaction, and supplies a nonhand play for Spider-Man 2099.
- Timing: Usually cast before land drop when you can play an exiled land; delay if holding mana for Counterspell or removal is more important.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{R}; outputs one card to hand, one bottomed card, and one temporary exiled playable card this turn.
- Partners / packages: Spider-Man 2099 rewards playing/casting from exile; Party Thrasher can help convoke noncreature spells cast from exile; Laelia, the Blade Reforged shares exile pressure.
- Role peers: Light Up the Stage is the closest exile-access peer; Faithless Looting is the cheap selection peer.
- Failure modes: Exiled card must be played this turn; putting the wrong land or interaction in exile can strand it.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong across matchups when mana supports it; against aggro, do not cast if it prevents immediate removal or blocker deployment.
Impractical Joke
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, sorcery-speed damage-prevention breaker and removal.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Makes damage unable to be prevented this turn, then deals 3 damage to up to one target creature or planeswalker. It removes a creature/planeswalker while enabling other damage from Lightning Bolt, combat, Lava Dart, Ghostfire Slice, or Broadside Bombardiers to punch through prevention.
- Timing: Cast before the damage sequence that matters; use with no target only when preventing damage prevention enables lethal or a decisive combat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs a turn-wide anti-prevention effect and optional 3 damage to up to one target creature or planeswalker.
- Partners / packages: Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Lava Dart, Fire // Ice, Ghostfire Slice, Spider-Man 2099 end-step damage, and combat damage benefit when prevention is relevant.
- Role peers: Flame Slash is the closest one-mana sorcery creature removal peer; Lightning Bolt is instant any-target damage.
- Failure modes: Sorcery speed; cannot target players; do not treat anti-prevention text as removal if no prevention effect is present.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High value versus prevention, fog, protection-adjacent prevention, and planeswalkers; otherwise a narrow three-damage sorcery.
Reckless Charge
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, burst pump and flashback pressure spell.
- Role type: mechanic enabler; threat/clock; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Gives target creature +3/+0 and haste until end of turn, enabling surprise damage from Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Khenra Spellspear, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or Detective's Phoenix. Flashback gives a second pump from graveyard.
- Timing: Cast when the target can attack profitably or lethal math is real; flashback for {2}{R} when the graveyard resource is worth exiling after resolution.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; flashback consumes {2}{R} from graveyard and exiles Reckless Charge; outputs +3/+0 and haste.
- Mode map: Hand cast is cheap pump; flashback repeats the same target-creature pump from graveyard, then exile.
- Partners / packages: Leyline of Resonance can copy it if it targets only a single creature you control; Mercurial Spelldancer can copy a later instant/sorcery after combat setup, but this sorcery must be timed before combat.
- Role peers: Maximize Velocity gives smaller haste with jump-start; Maximize Altitude gives flying instead of large power.
- Failure modes: Sorcery speed exposes the creature before combat; targeting a creature that cannot connect wastes the pump.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against low-blocker control and combo; risky against open instant removal.
Flame Slash
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, efficient sorcery creature removal.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 4 damage to target creature, clearing blockers and attackers that Lightning Bolt cannot kill.
- Timing: Use during your main phase before combat to clear the creature that blocks or races your best attacker; do not hold for stack interaction because it is a sorcery.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs 4 damage to target creature.
- Partners / packages: Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Fire // Ice, Fury, and Pyrokinesis can combine damage if one spell is short.
- Role peers: Roast deals 5 to nonflying creatures; Lightning Axe deals 5 at instant speed with discard/pay cost; Unholy Heat can deal 6 with delirium.
- Failure modes: Cannot hit players, planeswalkers, or flying-only restrictions do not apply here; sorcery speed means it cannot answer surprise attackers midcombat.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus creature decks with four-toughness threats; weak against control, combo, and creatures that require instant-speed answers.
Maximize Altitude
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, evasive pump and jump-start role player.
- Role type: protection/evasion; discard outlet; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Gives target creature +1/+1 and flying until end of turn, turning Khenra Spellspear, Spider-Man 2099, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Grim Lavamancer, or a token into evasive damage. Jump-start lets it be cast from graveyard by discarding a card in addition to paying costs.
- Timing: Use before combat when flying changes blocks or creates lethal; jump-start only when discarding a card is better than preserving hand quality.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; jump-start consumes {U} plus discarding a card from hand and exiles Maximize Altitude after resolution; outputs temporary +1/+1 and flying.
- Mode map: Hand cast is normal pump/evasion; jump-start recasts from graveyard by discarding a card, then exile.
- Partners / packages: Leyline of Resonance copies it if it targets only a single creature you control; Khenra Spellspear and Mercurial Spelldancer reward cheap spells.
- Role peers: Maximize Velocity gives haste instead of flying; Reckless Charge gives larger power and haste.
- Failure modes: Sorcery speed; flying is wasted on already evasive or unblockable creatures unless +1/+1 matters.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against ground stalls; weak against removal-heavy decks if cast into open mana without protection.
Maximize Velocity
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, haste pump and jump-start role player.
- Role type: mechanic enabler; discard outlet; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Gives target creature +1/+1 and haste until end of turn, enabling immediate attacks from Spider-Man 2099 after legal cast, Mercurial Spelldancer, Khenra Spellspear, True-Name Nemesis, or a late creature. Jump-start provides a second use from graveyard.
- Timing: Use before combat when haste changes damage or planeswalker pressure; jump-start when the discard fuels graveyard plans or is expendable.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; jump-start consumes {R} plus discarding a card and exiles Maximize Velocity after resolution; outputs temporary +1/+1 and haste.
- Mode map: Hand cast is normal pump/haste; jump-start recasts from graveyard by discarding a card, then exile.
- Partners / packages: Leyline of Resonance copies it if it targets only a single creature you control; Reckless Charge is bigger haste pump; Detective's Phoenix bestow supplies flying and haste from graveyard.
- Role peers: Reckless Charge is the high-damage haste peer; Maximize Altitude is the evasive peer.
- Failure modes: Sorcery speed; haste is wasted on a creature already able to attack unless +1/+1 or spell triggers matter.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong for surprise kills against control/combo; against aggro, do not spend it instead of needed removal.
Roast
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, large grounded-creature removal.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 5 damage to target creature without flying, answering large ground blockers or attackers that smaller burn misses.
- Timing: Cast precombat when the target blocks your key threat or postcombat only if damage math requires waiting; as a sorcery, it cannot answer attackers after they are declared.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs 5 damage to target creature without flying.
- Partners / packages: Flame Slash, Lightning Axe, Unholy Heat, and Fury cover overlapping creature sizes with different timing/restrictions.
- Role peers: Lightning Axe is instant speed and can hit flyers but needs discard/pay; Flame Slash is cheaper but 4 damage; Unholy Heat can hit planeswalkers and 6 damage with delirium.
- Failure modes: Cannot target creatures with flying, players, or planeswalkers; poor against spell-based decks.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against big ground commanders and midrange threats; sideboard out often versus flyers, control, and combo.
Propaganda
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, combat tax stabilization enchantment.
- Role type: lifegain/stabilization; hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Forces opponents' creatures to pay {2} for each creature attacking you, buying time for a single evasive/protected threat, burn reach, or card-flow recovery.
- Timing: Cast when multiple attackers are the problem and the opponent cannot easily pay through it; avoid if one large creature, noncombat damage, or combo is the real threat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{U}; outputs an attack tax against creatures attacking you.
- Partners / packages: Aetherize after sideboarding punishes attacks that pay through Propaganda; Floodpits Drowner, Loch Mare, Seal of Removal, Vapor Snag, and Fire // Ice reduce the number of meaningful attackers.
- Role peers: Aetherize is the sideboard combat-reset peer; Brotherhood's End is the sideboard small-board sweeper peer.
- Failure modes: Does not stop attacks at planeswalkers if relevant, does not affect noncombat damage, and does not remove existing creatures.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus go-wide creature decks; weak against control, combo, burn, and single huge attackers with spare mana.
Clout of the Dominus
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, Aura protection/pump burst slot.
- Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a creature; if enchanted creature is blue it gets +1/+1 and shroud, and if red it gets +1/+1 and haste. On blue-red creatures such as Spider-Man 2099, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon while creature, Restless Spire while animated, and Wandering Fumarole while animated, it grants both bonuses.
- Timing: Cast only when the creature can immediately pressure or survive and when shroud will not block your own needed targeting later.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U/R}; outputs color-conditional pump, shroud, and/or haste.
- Partners / packages: Combat Research, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Reckless Charge, Maximize Altitude, and Maximize Velocity can conflict with shroud if you need to target after Clout resolves.
- Role peers: Combat Research is the other Aura; Swiftfoot Boots and Mirror Shield provide repeatable protection without shroud.
- Failure modes: Enchant creature can target your creature or an opposing creature, but shroud then stops all players from targeting it; do not put it on a creature you still need to equip or pump.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against targeted removal if sequenced last; risky into bounce, edicts, and sweepers.
Combat Research
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, Aura card-draw engine.
- Role type: engine piece; mechanic payoff; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a creature and gives it a combat-damage-to-player draw trigger. If the enchanted creature is legendary, it also gets +1/+1 and ward {1}; strong carriers include Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Squee, Dubious Monarch, and Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon while creature.
- Timing: Cast when the creature is likely to connect now or is hard to remove; avoid into open removal unless Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, Spell Pierce, or Counterspell covers the exchange.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs repeat card draw on combat damage and legendary bonus protection/pump when applicable.
- Partners / packages: Maximize Altitude, Detective's Phoenix, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, and Mirror Shield help carriers connect or survive.
- Role peers: Occult Epiphany and Expressive Iteration are non-Aura card-flow peers; Clout of the Dominus is the other one-mana Aura.
- Failure modes: Enchanting a creature exposes you to two-for-one removal; ward {1} only applies if the enchanted creature is legendary.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against creature-light control and midrange; sideboard out more often versus red aggro or decks with abundant cheap removal.
Leyline of Resonance
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, opening-hand engine and spell-copy payoff.
- Role type: engine payoff; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: If in opening hand, may begin on battlefield. It copies instant or sorcery spells you cast that target only a single creature you control, boosting pump/protection lines with Reckless Charge, Maximize Altitude, Maximize Velocity, and some self-targeted interaction if legal.
- Timing: Free opening deployment is strong when hand contains a creature plus target spell; hard-cast for {2}{R}{R} only when you can immediately leverage copies or no longer need to hold interaction.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes opening-hand slot or {2}{R}{R}; outputs copied single-friendly-creature-targeting instants/sorceries with optional new targets.
- Partners / packages: Reckless Charge, Maximize Altitude, Maximize Velocity, and potentially Blink of an Eye or Vapor Snag only when targeting a single creature you control are the current-list spell targets that can satisfy the trigger.
- Role peers: Mercurial Spelldancer copies later instant/sorcery spells after combat damage; Khenra Spellspear rewards spell volume rather than copying.
- Failure modes: Does not copy Auras, Equipment, abilities, or spells targeting opponent creatures/players; hard-casting can be too slow.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against decks light on instant removal; weak versus aggro if it does not affect board immediately.
Advanced Reconstruction
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, graveyard/exile class engine.
- Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Level 1 mills a card at your first main phase, randomly exiles a card from your graveyard, and lets you play it this turn. Level 2 deals 2 damage to each opponent whenever one or more cards leave your graveyard. Level 3 makes spells cast from anywhere other than your hand cost {2} less.
- Timing: Cast when the game is slow enough to profit from repeated nonhand access; level up as a sorcery when extra mana will not cost a critical counter/removal window.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{R}, then {1}{R} for Level 2 and {1}{R} for Level 3; consumes graveyard cards at random; outputs playable exile cards, opponent damage, and nonhand cost reduction.
- Mode map: Class Level 1 is mill/random graveyard exile/play access; Level 2 adds leave-graveyard damage; Level 3 discounts spells cast from anywhere other than hand.
- Partners / packages: Spider-Man 2099, Laelia, Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, Lava Dart, Faithless Looting, Maximize Altitude, Maximize Velocity, Squee, and Detective's Phoenix interact with nonhand/graveyard resources.
- Role peers: Party Thrasher is the closest exile-play engine; Grim Lavamancer is the closest graveyard-exile damage engine.
- Failure modes: Random exile can remove the exact graveyard card you wanted; slow four-mana enchantment can lose tempo.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in attrition; risky versus fast aggro, graveyard hate, and counterspell-heavy control.
Seal of Removal
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, pre-positioned creature bounce enchantment.
- Role type: interaction-removal; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Sits on battlefield and sacrifices to return target creature to its owner's hand, threatening to clear a blocker, save your own key creature, or reset a commander.
- Timing: Cast early when you can spare {U}; sacrifice only when the bounce changes combat, protects a key permanent from removal/combat, or forces a costly recast.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; later consumes sacrificing the enchantment; outputs creature bounce at instant speed once on board.
- Partners / packages: True-Name Nemesis, Delver of Secrets, Spider-Man 2099, Mercurial Spelldancer, and Laelia, the Blade Reforged benefit from cleared blockers; it adds enchantment card type for delirium after sacrifice.
- Role peers: Vapor Snag is cheaper instant bounce with life loss; Withdraw can hit two creatures; Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft hits nonland permanents an opponent controls.
- Failure modes: Only targets creatures; visible on board so opponents can play around it; sacrificing removes an enchantment type from battlefield but adds it to graveyard.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against commanders and aura/equipment creatures; weak against creature-light combo/control.
Fabled Passage
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, land-search utility and fixing resource.
- Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Taps and sacrifices to search for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle; if you control four or more lands, untap that land. Current registered targets are Island and Mountain.
- Timing: Use early for missing color; wait if shuffle timing after surveil/scry matters, but do not delay if blue or red is needed now.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and sacrifice; outputs Island or Mountain, shuffle, graveyard land card type, and untapped basic only at four or more lands.
- Partners / packages: Island supports Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Vapor Snag, Repeal, and Spider-Sense; Mountain supports Lightning Bolt, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Faithless Looting, Lava Dart flashback, and red removal.
- Role peers: Command Tower, Shivan Reef, Sulfur Falls, and Molten Tributary are color-fixing peers; no other main-deck card searches lands.
- Failure modes: Does not find nonbasic lands, Restless Spire, or duals; fetched land enters tapped before four lands.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against tempo decks, weigh tapped basic against holding one-mana interaction; against long games, use it to fix double blue or red density.
Cori Mountain Monastery
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, red source and late exile-card utility land.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Enters tapped unless you control a Plains or an Island, taps for {R}, and later pays {3}{R}, tap to exile the top card of your library and let you play it until the end of your next turn. This supports red spells and Spider-Man 2099's nonhand trigger.
- Timing: Play after Island when possible to avoid tapped tempo; activate late when you can still play the exiled card or when holding mana is less important.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes a land drop; outputs red mana and late temporary exile access.
- Partners / packages: Island enables untapped entry; Spider-Man 2099, Laelia, Party Thrasher, Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, and Advanced Reconstruction share exile-play incentives.
- Role peers: Prismari Campus and Spectacle Summit are utility tapped dual peers; Temple of Epiphany is the scry-entry peer.
- Failure modes: Does not add blue; activation costs four mana including red and tapping the land, so it can strand counters.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in grindy games; awkward in fast games without Island.
Shivan Reef
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, untapped Izzet pain-land mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Provides untapped {C}, or {U}/{R} at the cost of 1 damage to you, enabling early Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Spell Pierce, Lightning Bolt, Faithless Looting, Vapor Snag, and Counterspell sequencing.
- Timing: Use colored pain when tempo or interaction matters; choose {C} or another land when life total is under burn pressure and color is not required.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs colorless without pain or blue/red with 1 self-damage.
- Partners / packages: Supports both halves of Expressive Iteration, Spider-Man 2099, Fire // Ice, and blue-red interaction turns.
- Role peers: Command Tower is painless perfect fixing; Sulfur Falls and Molten Tributary are painless but may enter tapped.
- Failure modes: Repeated self-damage is dangerous against red aggro and burn; colorless does not pay colored costs.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent for tempo starts; against burn, prioritize painless alternatives when available.
Sulfur Falls
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, dual-color mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Taps for {U} or {R} and enters untapped if you control an Island or Mountain, supporting the deck's one- and two-mana tempo plan.
- Timing: Sequence after Island, Mountain, or Molten Tributary when possible; if it enters tapped, play on a turn without critical one-mana interaction.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs blue or red mana.
- Partners / packages: Island, Mountain, and Molten Tributary enable untapped entry because Molten Tributary has land types Island Mountain.
- Role peers: Command Tower and Shivan Reef are untapped fixing peers; Highland Lake and Izzet Guildgate are tapped dual peers.
- Failure modes: First land Sulfur Falls enters tapped and can strand Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Lightning Bolt, Spell Pierce, or Vapor Snag.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong when sequenced with basics; risky as sole opener versus fast decks.
Command Tower
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premium commander-color mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Adds one mana of any color in Spider-Man 2099's color identity, meaning {U} or {R}, with no life loss or entry tapped condition.
- Timing: Prioritize early when hand needs both colors or when holding up one-mana interaction; use to cast Spider-Man 2099, Expressive Iteration, Counterspell support, or red removal.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs painless blue or red mana.
- Partners / packages: Supports all blue and red spells, especially mixed-color turns with Lightning Bolt plus Spell Pierce or Expressive Iteration.
- Role peers: Shivan Reef, Sulfur Falls, and Molten Tributary are fixing peers with pain or tempo costs.
- Failure modes: Color identity only supplies blue/red here; does not produce colorless separately for effects that specifically require {C}, though this list has few.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best land in most openers because it preserves tempo without life loss.
Izzet Boilerworks
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, bounce-land mana resource and card-advantage land drop.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Enters tapped, returns a land you control to hand, and taps for {U}{R}. It helps hit land drops and supports double-spell turns but costs major tempo.
- Timing: Play when returning a tapped land, Fabled Passage after use, Temple of Epiphany for another scry later if legal, or a land not needed for immediate interaction; avoid when you must hold Spell Pierce, Lightning Bolt, or Vapor Snag.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and bounces a land you control; outputs two mana, one blue and one red, on later turns.
- Partners / packages: Works with tapped duals such as Highland Lake, Izzet Guildgate, Swiftwater Cliffs, Temple of Epiphany, Prismari Campus, Spectacle Summit, and Molten Tributary when tempo allows.
- Role peers: Opal Palace and Prismari Campus are slower utility lands; Command Tower is the tempo-fixing contrast.
- Failure modes: Land destruction or bounce after playing it can set you far behind; entering tapped can lose against aggro.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in slower games; mulligan-risk in hands that need turn-one action.
Molten Tributary
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, typed tapped Izzet dual mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: As Land — Island Mountain, taps for {U} or {R} but enters tapped. Its basic land types help Sulfur Falls and allow it to count as Island/Mountain for effects that check land types.
- Timing: Play on turns where tapped entry does not strand a one-mana spell or counter; value its types when Sulfur Falls or Cori Mountain Monastery sequencing matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and a tempo delay; outputs blue or red mana on later turns.
- Partners / packages: Supports Sulfur Falls untapped entry and Cori Mountain Monastery untapped entry because it is an Island; it is a Mountain for Lava Dart flashback's "sacrifice a Mountain" if sacrificing this land is worth it.
- Role peers: Highland Lake, Izzet Guildgate, and Swiftwater Cliffs are tapped dual peers without both basic land types.
- Failure modes: Cannot support turn-one one-mana plays because it enters tapped.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Fine against slower decks; dangerous in openers against aggro or tempo without other untapped mana.
Restless Spire
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped dual and creature-land threat.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Taps for {U} or {R}, and for {U}{R} becomes a 2/1 blue and red Elemental creature until end of turn with first strike during your turn; whenever it attacks, scry 1.
- Timing: Use as a land early only if tapped entry is acceptable; animate after sweepers or in stalls when you can still respect removal and interaction.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and enters tapped; activation consumes {U}{R}; outputs creature pressure and attack scry.
- Mode map: Mana mode produces blue/red; creature mode turns it into a 2/1 blue-red Elemental with your-turn first strike and attack scry 1.
- Partners / packages: Combat Research can enchant it while it is a creature but falls off if illegal after turn state changes; Clout of the Dominus grants both color bonuses while animated.
- Role peers: Wandering Fumarole is the other creature-land; Spectacle Summit is the surveil utility land peer.
- Failure modes: Creature-land removal can cost a land; do not animate if mana is needed for Counterspell, Lightning Bolt, or Vapor Snag.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus sweepers and control; risky versus instant removal and wide aggro.
Temple of Epiphany
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped dual and entry scry mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Enters tapped, scries 1, and taps for {U} or {R}, smoothing early draws and helping Delver of Secrets, land drops, or interaction sequencing.
- Timing: Best on turn one when you lack a one-mana play or in slower hands; avoid if it strands Lightning Bolt, Spell Pierce, Vapor Snag, Delver of Secrets, or Dragon's Rage Channeler.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and tempo; outputs blue/red mana later and one scry on entry.
- Partners / packages: Delver of Secrets appreciates top-card setup; Dragon's Rage Channeler and Spectacle Summit provide additional top-card filtering.
- Role peers: Prismari Campus and Spectacle Summit are tapped dual utility peers; Swiftwater Cliffs is the life-gain tapped peer.
- Failure modes: Does not support turn-one interaction because it enters tapped; scry decisions must prioritize missing land/color/action, not abstract value.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in slower/control games; risky versus fast aggro or combo when early mana must stay untapped.
Wandering Fumarole
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped dual and late creature-land finisher.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Taps for {U} or {R}; for {2}{U}{R} becomes a 1/4 blue and red Elemental with "{0}: Switch this creature's power and toughness until end of turn." It can attack as 4/1 or block as 1/4 depending on timing.
- Timing: Play tapped when tempo allows; animate late after removal trades or when holding up less interaction is acceptable.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; activation consumes {2}{U}{R}; outputs a flexible creature body until end of turn.
- Mode map: Mana mode produces blue/red; creature mode creates a 1/4 that can switch to 4/1 for damage or remain 1/4 for defense.
- Partners / packages: Clout of the Dominus gives both blue and red bonuses while animated; Combat Research can draw if it connects while enchanted legally.
- Role peers: Restless Spire is the cheaper creature-land peer with scry; Nova Hellkite is the top-end evasive creature finisher.
- Failure modes: Four-mana activation is expensive and exposes a land to creature removal; switching power/toughness at the wrong time can kill it in combat.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in control attrition; too slow against fast creature pressure unless blocking matters.
Highland Lake
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped Izzet dual mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Enters tapped and taps for {U} or {R}, providing color consistency at a tempo cost.
- Timing: Play when the turn has no urgent one-mana spell or when future double-blue/red sequencing matters more than immediate action.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and one turn of tempo; outputs blue or red mana later.
- Partners / packages: Supports Counterspell, Mana Leak, Spider-Man 2099, Lightning Bolt, and Expressive Iteration once untapped.
- Role peers: Izzet Guildgate, Swiftwater Cliffs, Prismari Campus, and Spectacle Summit are tapped dual peers with different small upsides.
- Failure modes: Cannot support turn-one Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Spell Pierce, Lightning Bolt, or Faithless Looting.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Acceptable against slower decks; poor in fast matchups if opener lacks another untapped source.
Izzet Guildgate
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped Gate dual mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Enters tapped and taps for {U} or {R}; it fixes color but adds no other current-list synergy beyond being a Gate.
- Timing: Use on low-pressure turns or as the first land only when no one-mana play is needed.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and tempo; outputs blue or red mana after untapping.
- Partners / packages: Helps cast Spider-Man 2099, Expressive Iteration, Counterspell support, and red removal once active.
- Role peers: Highland Lake is the closest exact peer; Swiftwater Cliffs adds 1 life; Prismari Campus and Spectacle Summit add late utility.
- Failure modes: Tapped entry can lose tempo; Gate subtype has no payoff in this registered deck.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Fine versus slow decks; likely weakest land against aggro or tempo starts.
Opal Palace
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, commander-scaling utility land.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Taps for {C}, or pays {1}, tap to add one mana of Spider-Man 2099's color identity. If that mana casts Spider-Man 2099 from command zone, he enters with additional +1/+1 counters equal to times cast from command zone this game.
- Timing: Use for commander recast turns where extra counters matter; avoid relying on it for colored one-mana interaction because the colored ability effectively costs {1} and tap.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs colorless, or filtered blue/red for commander-color spells, with commander counter upside only when spent on Spider-Man 2099.
- Partners / packages: Spider-Man 2099's double strike and end-step damage scale with power, making counters valuable on recasts.
- Role peers: Command Tower is the painless color peer; Fabled Passage fixes basics without commander-scaling.
- Failure modes: Colorless mode does not cast colored spells; colored mode is mana-inefficient for noncommander spells.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in grindy commander-tax games; awkward in fast starts needing untapped blue/red.
Prismari Campus
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped Izzet dual with late scry utility.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Enters tapped, taps for {U} or {R}, and later pays {4}, tap to scry 1, turning excess mana into top-card control.
- Timing: Play tapped when immediate interaction is not needed; activate scry at end step or stalled turns when holding up four mana is not required.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and tempo; outputs blue/red mana and late scry.
- Partners / packages: Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Restless Spire, Temple of Epiphany, and Spectacle Summit all interact with top-card quality.
- Role peers: Temple of Epiphany scries on entry; Spectacle Summit surveils late; Cori Mountain Monastery exiles cards late.
- Failure modes: Four-mana scry activation is low priority when Counterspell, Lightning Bolt, or creature-land activation matters.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in long games; poor as early tapped land against aggro.
Spectacle Summit
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped Izzet dual with late surveil utility.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Enters tapped, taps for {U} or {R}, and later pays {2}{U}{R}, tap to surveil 1, looking at the top card and optionally putting it into your graveyard.
- Timing: Play when tapped entry is acceptable; use surveil when excess mana can improve draws or stock graveyard without weakening needed interaction.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and tempo; outputs blue/red mana and late graveyard/top-card filtering.
- Partners / packages: Dragon's Rage Channeler, Unholy Heat, Grim Lavamancer, Logic Knot, Lava Dart, Squee, Detective's Phoenix, and Advanced Reconstruction care about graveyard quality.
- Role peers: Prismari Campus is late scry; Temple of Epiphany is entry scry.
- Failure modes: Surveilling a needed card into graveyard can be costly if graveyard hate or exile costs remove it; activation is expensive.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in attrition; too slow against decks pressuring mana every turn.
Swiftwater Cliffs
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped Izzet dual with life buffer.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; lifegain/stabilization.
- Deck-specific job: Enters tapped, gains 1 life, and taps for {U} or {R}. The life matters in burn and aggro races where Shivan Reef damage and early attacks add up.
- Timing: Play when tapped entry does not strand a one-mana answer; prioritize over other tapped duals when one life changes burn math.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and tempo; outputs 1 life on entry and blue/red mana later.
- Partners / packages: Supports Hydroblast, Lightning Bolt, Spell Pierce, Vapor Snag, and Counterspell turns after untapping.
- Role peers: Highland Lake and Izzet Guildgate are tapped dual peers without life; Temple of Epiphany trades life for scry.
- Failure modes: Life gain does not offset losing a turn to an unanswered threat; cannot support turn-one spells.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Better versus burn/red aggro; worse versus combo/control where tempo and card selection matter more.
Pyroblast
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, blue-hate stack/permanent bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Choose either counter target spell if it's blue or destroy target permanent if it's blue. It protects Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis support, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or Combat Research carriers from blue interaction and removes blue blockers/engines.
- Timing: Bring in when blue spells or blue permanents decide the matchup; hold for the blue spell on the stack or blue permanent that affects the current win line.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs conditional counter or conditional destruction based on blue color.
- Mode map: Counter mode targets a spell and counters it if it is blue on resolution; destroy mode targets a permanent and destroys it if it is blue.
- Partners / packages: Red Elemental Blast and Dispel join it in blue/control stack fights; Counterspell and Spell Pierce protect different spell classes.
- Role peers: Red Elemental Blast is the closest peer with stricter blue target wording; Hydroblast is the red-hate mirror.
- Failure modes: Low value against nonblue decks; if the target is not blue when the spell resolves, Pyroblast's condition matters.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Side in versus blue tempo, control, and combo; do not keep just because opponent has Islands if no blue target matters.
Red Elemental Blast
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, blue-hate stack/permanent bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Choose either counter target blue spell or destroy target blue permanent. Compared with Pyroblast, the target must be blue up front, so it is cleaner when blue status is visible.
- Timing: Bring in versus blue control, tempo, combo, or blue commanders; hold for the blue counter/removal/payoff spell or blue permanent that blocks pressure.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs counter to target blue spell or destruction of target blue permanent.
- Mode map: Counter mode legally targets a blue spell; destroy mode legally targets a blue permanent.
- Partners / packages: Pyroblast, Dispel, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, and Negate form the blue-matchup stack package.
- Role peers: Pyroblast is closest but can target a spell/permanent with color checked by effect wording; Hydroblast is the red-color mirror.
- Failure modes: Dead against nonblue cards; cannot counter nonblue spells even if they are important.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus blue decks that fight on stack; poor against creature-heavy nonblue aggro.
Hydroblast
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, red-hate stack/permanent bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Choose either counter target spell if it's red or destroy target permanent if it's red. It stops lethal burn, red commanders, red removal aimed at a key threat, or red permanents racing your board.
- Timing: Bring in versus red aggro, burn, red tempo, and red combo pieces; hold for the red spell/permanent that changes life total, removes your carrier, or wins combat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs conditional counter or conditional destruction based on red color.
- Mode map: Counter mode targets a spell and counters it if it is red on resolution; destroy mode targets a permanent and destroys it if it is red.
- Partners / packages: Dispel, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, and Lazotep Plating can also protect against burn/removal; Swiftwater Cliffs helps race red decks.
- Role peers: Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast are blue-hate color mirrors.
- Failure modes: Low value against nonred decks; does not answer colorless artifacts or nonred creatures.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium versus red burn and haste threats; avoid overboarding into red-light midrange.
Abrade
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, flexible creature/artifact interaction.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Choose either deal 3 damage to target creature or destroy target artifact. It covers early creatures while also answering equipment, mana artifacts, artifact creatures, or prison artifacts.
- Timing: Bring in when both creature pressure and artifact targets are plausible; choose mode based on the permanent that most affects survival or the current attack.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs 3 creature damage or artifact destruction.
- Mode map: Damage mode targets a creature; artifact mode targets an artifact and destroys it.
- Partners / packages: Vandalblast and Brotherhood's End expand artifact answers; Lightning Bolt, Flame Slash, and Unholy Heat overlap on creature removal.
- Role peers: Vandalblast is artifact-only with overload; Lightning Strike hits any target but cannot destroy artifacts.
- Failure modes: Three damage may miss larger creatures; artifact mode does not hit nonartifact enchantments or creatures unless they are artifacts.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus equipment, artifact mana, and red/creature decks; weak versus spell combo without artifacts or creatures.
Vandalblast
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, dedicated artifact sweeper/removal bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Destroys target artifact you do not control for {R}; overloaded for {4}{R}, changes "target" to "each" and destroys each artifact you do not control.
- Timing: Bring in only when artifacts are central; cast single-target mode for an early artifact that matters, or overload when multiple opposing artifacts justify a full turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R} or overload {4}{R}; outputs artifact destruction.
- Mode map: Normal mode targets one artifact you do not control; overload mode does not target and affects each artifact you do not control.
- Partners / packages: Abrade and Brotherhood's End provide additional artifact coverage; Pithing Needle can shut activated artifact abilities when destruction is not enough.
- Role peers: Abrade is flexible single-artifact removal; Brotherhood's End destroys each artifact with mana value 3 or less.
- Failure modes: Sorcery speed; cannot hit your own artifact, nonartifact enchantments, or artifacts protected from destruction.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against artifact mana/equipment/prison boards; poor against decks with only incidental artifacts.
Grafdigger's Cage
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, graveyard/library-cast hate artifact.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Stops creature cards in graveyards and libraries from entering the battlefield and stops players from casting spells from graveyards or libraries. It attacks graveyard recursion, library-cast engines, and some creature-cheat lines.
- Timing: Bring in when opponent's revealed plan uses graveyard casting, library casting, or creature cards entering from graveyard/library; deploy before they spend setup resources.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}; outputs static hate that affects both players.
- Partners / packages: Pithing Needle can stop activated graveyard engines; Dispel can protect Cage from instant-speed answers.
- Role peers: No main-deck hate peer; Pithing Needle is the closest boarded permanent hate piece.
- Failure modes: It also conflicts with your Faithless Looting flashback, Lava Dart flashback, Reckless Charge flashback, Maximize Altitude jump-start, Maximize Velocity jump-start, Detective's Phoenix bestow from graveyard, and some Advanced Reconstruction lines; it does not stop graveyard cards used only as cost/counting fuel such as delve or delirium.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus graveyard/library-cast combo; weak versus ordinary reanimation that bypasses Cage wording only if legal engine text shows a different axis.
Pithing Needle
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, named activated-ability hate bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: As it enters, choose a card name; activated abilities of sources with that name cannot be activated unless they are mana abilities. Use on visible commanders, planeswalkers, equipment, creature-lands, artifacts, or graveyard engines whose activated ability dominates the game.
- Timing: Bring in when a specific activated ability is known from Game 1 or public information; cast after enough information to name correctly unless an obvious commander target exists.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}; outputs static suppression of nonmana activated abilities from the chosen name.
- Partners / packages: Counterspell, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Dispel protect it from answers; Abrade/Vandalblast/Brotherhood's End handle artifacts when Needle only stops abilities.
- Role peers: Grafdigger's Cage is the other one-mana artifact hate piece; Pithing Needle is narrower but more flexible by card name.
- Failure modes: Does not stop mana abilities, triggered abilities, static abilities, attacks, or spells being cast; guessing hidden names is low value.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against activated commanders, planeswalkers, equipment, creature-lands, and artifact engines; weak against spell-based combo and ordinary creatures.
Brotherhood's End
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, small-board or small-artifact sweeper bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-sweeper; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Choose one: deal 3 damage to each creature and each planeswalker, or destroy each artifact with mana value 3 or less. It resets go-wide boards or low-cost artifact boards.
- Timing: Bring in against low-toughness creatures, tokens, planeswalkers with low loyalty, artifact swarms, or artifact mana; cast when the exchange preserves more life/material than your own board loses.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}{R}; outputs symmetrical creature/planeswalker damage or artifact destruction by mana value.
- Mode map: Damage mode hits each creature and each planeswalker for 3; artifact mode destroys each artifact with mana value 3 or less.
- Partners / packages: Propaganda and Aetherize buy time to set up sweep; Fury and Pyrokinesis cover smaller tactical removals.
- Role peers: Aetherize resets attacking creatures without damaging your board; Pyrokinesis and Fury are selective damage peers.
- Failure modes: Damage mode kills your Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Grim Lavamancer, Loyal Apprentice, Mercurial Spelldancer, and many tokens; artifact mode can destroy your Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Grafdigger's Cage, and Pithing Needle if controlled by you.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus go-wide aggro and artifact boards; weak versus big creatures and spell combo.
Dispel
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, one-mana instant-only stack bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target instant spell, winning counter wars, stopping instant removal, burn, bounce, or combo protection.
- Timing: Bring in when instant-speed interaction decides games; hold for the instant that protects the opponent's win or removes your key threat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs hard counter to target instant spell on the stack.
- Partners / packages: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, and Negate cover broader or color-specific stack fights.
- Role peers: Spell Pierce is broader for noncreature spells but tax-based; Turn Aside is protection-only for spells targeting your permanent.
- Failure modes: Cannot counter sorceries, creatures, artifacts, enchantments, planeswalkers, or activated/triggered abilities.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control, tempo, burn, and instant-heavy combo; poor versus creature-heavy or sorcery-speed decks.
Aetherize
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, attacking-creature reset bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal; lifegain/stabilization.
- Deck-specific job: Returns all attacking creatures to their owners' hands, punishing alpha strikes, token swarms, and opponents who pay through Propaganda.
- Timing: Bring in when combat volume decides the game; leave four mana open and encourage attacks when the bounce creates a lethal counterattack or prevents lethal.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{U}; outputs mass bounce of attacking creatures only.
- Partners / packages: Propaganda taxes attacks before Aetherize; Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Delver of Secrets, Mercurial Spelldancer, and burn convert the tempo reset into a clock.
- Role peers: Withdraw is smaller two-creature bounce; Brotherhood's End is the sweeper alternative; Vapor Snag handles one creature cheaply.
- Failure modes: Does nothing before attackers are declared, against nonattacking creatures, or against noncombat combo; returned creatures can be recast.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus go-wide creature decks and all-in attacks; weak against one big creature with strong enters triggers or spell-based decks.
Island
- Deck role: Main deck, 8 copies, basic blue mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Provides stable {U} for Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Vapor Snag, Repeal, Wash Away, Spider-Sense, Combat Research, Mercurial Spelldancer, True-Name Nemesis, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, and Spider-Man 2099.
- Timing: Prioritize early when hand has one-mana blue interaction or double-blue costs; fetch with Fabled Passage when blue is missing or Counterspell is approaching.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs blue mana and enables Sulfur Falls and Cori Mountain Monastery untapped entry.
- Partners / packages: Fabled Passage can find Island; Sulfur Falls and Cori Mountain Monastery care about controlling Island.
- Role peers: Command Tower and Shivan Reef provide untapped blue/red flexibility; Molten Tributary is a tapped Island Mountain.
- Failure modes: Too many Islands can strand red one-mana plays such as Lightning Bolt, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Faithless Looting, Lava Dart, and Flame Slash.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Most important against control/combo where holding blue permission decides the game.
Mountain
- Deck role: Main deck, 13 copies, basic red mana resource and Lava Dart fuel.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Provides stable {R} for Dragon's Rage Channeler, Lightning Bolt, Faithless Looting, Lava Dart, Flame Slash, Unholy Heat, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, Broadside Bombardiers, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and sideboard red interaction. It can be sacrificed from battlefield to flash back Lava Dart.
- Timing: Prioritize early when red removal or one-drop pressure is needed; fetch with Fabled Passage when red is missing or Lava Dart flashback is part of the plan.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs red mana; may be sacrificed as Lava Dart flashback cost.
- Partners / packages: Fabled Passage finds Mountain; Sulfur Falls checks for Mountain; Lava Dart requires sacrificing a Mountain you control for flashback.
- Role peers: Command Tower, Shivan Reef, and Molten Tributary are red-source peers.
- Failure modes: Sacrificing Mountain can shrink future red access or land count; too many Mountains can strand Counterspell and blue interaction.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Most important versus aggro, where red removal and Lava Dart tempo matter early.
Interaction Priorities
-
Priority: answer the permanent or spell that invalidates the current protected-threat plan before trading for generic value. Kill, counter, or bounce the card that prevents Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Mercurial Spelldancer, Delver of Secrets, Detective's Phoenix, or another active carrier from connecting, surviving, or converting Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, or Maximize Altitude into pressure.
-
Remove first: spend Flame Slash, Roast, Lightning Axe, Unholy Heat, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Lava Dart, Fire // Ice, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, or Pyrokinesis on creatures that create repeatable mana, cards, sacrifice value, combat lockouts, or a clock faster than the deck's evasive threat. Preserve Lightning Bolt and Lightning Strike as reach when the opponent is already under pressure; spend Flame Slash, Roast, Lightning Axe, or Unholy Heat first when a blocker or attacker must be cleared and life-total reach still matters.
-
Counter first: use Counterspell, Mana Leak, Spell Pierce, Negate, Wash Away, Logic Knot, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, and Spider-Sense to stop sweepers, decisive removal, stack-based combo pieces, commander-breaking tempo plays, or effects that blank a single protected attacker. Card text check required for Spider-Sense; do not treat it as a universal counter unless legal action text confirms the protection mode. Prefer Turn Aside and Lazotep Plating for protecting a developed permanent rather than fighting over a low-impact exchange.
-
Bounce first: use Seal of Removal, Vapor Snag, Repeal, Blink of an Eye, Withdraw, Brazen Borrower, or Fire // Ice when tempo beats permanence. Bounce a commander, enchanted creature, equipped blocker, large token, or expensive tapped threat when forcing a recast opens an attack or protects life; avoid bouncing cheap enters-the-battlefield value creatures unless the tempo window wins this turn cycle.
-
Bait policy: lead with lower-stakes threats or card-flow spells when the hand contains both a must-protect threat and permission. Let Dragon's Rage Channeler, Delver of Secrets, Faithless Looting, Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, or a modest burn spell test the opponent's response before committing Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or Spider-Man 2099 into open mana.
-
Ignore policy: do not spend premium interaction on blockers that cannot block the current evasive or protected attacker, life-gain that does not change the combat clock, small creatures held back under Propaganda, or noncombat engines that are slower than lethal pressure. Reassess if the engine starts producing removal, sacrifice fodder, graveyard hate, or enough blockers to stop the attack plan.
-
Archetype shift: against creature swarms, trade cards for tempo and life before protecting a slow engine; Propaganda, Fire // Ice, Lava Dart, Pyrokinesis, Fury, Withdraw, and Aetherize-style effects after sideboarding become more important. Against control or combo, hold permission for decisive noncreature spells, protect a single threat, and avoid tapping out for marginal extra pressure. Against graveyard decks, value exile or graveyard-pressure decisions only when the visible graveyard or legal action text makes the target relevant; do not weaken your own Logic Knot, Grim Lavamancer, Lava Dart, Faithless Looting, Detective's Phoenix, or Advanced Reconstruction plan without a clear payoff.
Combat And Trading Rules
-
Attack rule: attack when the resulting damage, card draw, impulse access, commander pressure, or planeswalker pressure is worth the exposed creature. Favor attacks with True-Name Nemesis, Delver of Secrets, Detective's Phoenix, Brazen Borrower, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Mercurial Spelldancer, Restless Spire, or Wandering Fumarole when blocks are poor or protection is available.
-
Carrier rule: preserve the creature carrying Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, or Maximize Altitude unless combat damage is lethal or the exchange removes a more important opposing engine. Do not attack a key carrier into an obvious double-block or open removal line unless Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Mana Leak, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, Spider-Sense, Seal of Removal, Vapor Snag, or Lightning Bolt covers the relevant legal response.
-
Trade rule: trade small creatures for board stability when behind, but keep pressure creatures when racing. Dragon's Rage Channeler, Grim Lavamancer, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Gut, True Soul Zealot, Loyal Apprentice, Khenra Spellspear, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Floodpits Drowner, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, Sinister Concierge, Party Thrasher, Volatile Stormdrake, Loch Mare, Broadside Bombardiers, and Nova Hellkite require visible card-text checks before assigning special combat value; do not assume sacrifice, token, evasion, or trigger text unless Veles exposes it.
-
Block rule: block to preserve life when the opponent can kill in the next one or two attacks, when Propaganda is not enough to slow them, or when a creature has already delivered its value. Avoid chump-blocking with the only threat unless the life total is below the visible attack power plus burn-risk estimate or the next turn has no credible race.
-
Trick rule: hold burn and bounce through combat when the opponent's blocks or pump choices can be punished. Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Lava Dart, Fire // Ice, Unholy Heat, Vapor Snag, Seal of Removal, Repeal, Blink of an Eye, Withdraw, and Brazen Borrower can turn blocks into tempo wins, but choose only legal targets and do not assume damage math beyond engine output.
-
Life threshold: above roughly 12 life, prioritize maintaining pressure and mana efficiency unless the visible board presents a two-turn clock. Between 7 and 12, favor removing attackers over adding slow engines. At 6 or less, treat any legal line that prevents immediate lethal as higher priority than card advantage, Combat Research setup, or speculative graveyard value.
-
Archetype difference: against aggro, block and trade earlier, use burn on creatures, and make Propaganda tax multiple attackers. Against midrange, protect one evasive or recursive threat and bounce expensive blockers. Against control, avoid unnecessary trades, keep mana for permission, and force them to answer repeated small attacks. Against combo, attack aggressively while holding Counterspell, Mana Leak, Spell Pierce, Negate, Wash Away, or Logic Knot for the decisive spell rather than spending combat tricks for minor damage.
Selection And Tutor Rules
-
Treat this deck as pseudo-selection, not a tutor deck. Fabled Passage is the only registered card that clearly searches the library without a card-text check, and it should usually find the missing color first, then the basic that lets Counterspell, Expressive Iteration, Lightning Bolt, or commander recast sequencing stay live.
-
Sequence selection before land drops when the legal action can change the land choice. Cast Expressive Iteration or Light Up the Stage before playing a land when mana is already available and an exiled land can still be played; play the land first when the spell needs that mana or when missing a color would strand the turn.
-
Use Faithless Looting to convert excess lands, redundant protection, late cheap creatures, or flashback-recoupable resources into action. Do not discard the only red or blue source, the only answer to a visible threat, or a protected threat package unless the hand already has a better line.
-
Use Dragon's Rage Channeler-style filtering only according to visible engine text. If surveil or graveyard selection is exposed, keep cheap interaction, pressure, and missing lands; put low-impact duplicates, overcosted threats, or matchup-dead reactive cards into the graveyard when Logic Knot, Grim Lavamancer, Lava Dart, Detective's Phoenix, or Advanced Reconstruction can plausibly use graveyard material.
-
Preserve graveyard fuel unless the payoff is immediate. Logic Knot, Grim Lavamancer, Lava Dart, Faithless Looting, Detective's Phoenix, Unholy Heat, and Advanced Reconstruction all make the graveyard a resource; exile or discard cards only after checking whether the next likely turn needs them for cost, threshold, recursion, or reach.
-
Bottom or discard narrow cards when the current matchup invalidates them. Creature-only removal is weaker against spell combo or control; soft counters are weaker when the opponent has excess mana; pump and carrier auras are weaker without a stable creature; Propaganda is weaker against one large attacker.
-
Keep protection plus a carrier together when possible. Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, and Maximize Altitude are stronger when paired with True-Name Nemesis, Delver of Secrets, Detective's Phoenix, Brazen Borrower, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Spider-Man 2099, or another legal evasive threat.
-
Use cantrip-like bounce for tempo plus replacement only when the target matters. Repeal and Blink of an Eye should hit tokens, equipped threats, expensive blockers, commanders, or permanents blocking a decisive attack; avoid spending them on harmless permanents just to draw unless the hand is stalled.
-
Card text check required for Occult Epiphany, Impractical Joke, Advanced Reconstruction, Sinister Concierge, Party Thrasher, Loch Mare, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, Nova Hellkite, Leyline of Resonance, and Spider-Man 2099. Choose selection modes from these cards only when Veles exposes the exact legal options and the visible result advances mana, pressure, protection, or survival.
Priority And Stack Rules
-
Hold priority discipline around the deck's protected-threat plan. When a threat is carrying Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, or Maximize Altitude, keep Counterspell, Mana Leak, Spell Pierce, Negate, Wash Away, Logic Knot, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, Spider-Sense, Vapor Snag, or Seal of Removal available when possible.
-
Counter the spell that changes the game, not the first spell. Use Counterspell, Logic Knot, Mana Leak, Spell Pierce, Negate, and Wash Away on sweepers, commander-breaking removal, combo payoffs, prison pieces, lethal burn, or effects that invalidate your board; let low-impact setup resolve when the current clock is favorable.
-
Spend narrow protection only on important permanents. Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, Spider-Sense, Swiftfoot Boots, and Mirror Shield should protect Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, a card-draw carrier, or a lethal attacker; do not protect a replaceable creature unless losing it breaks the turn.
-
Use instant-speed burn and bounce after the opponent commits resources. Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Lava Dart, Fire // Ice, Unholy Heat, Pyrokinesis, Fury, Vapor Snag, Repeal, Blink of an Eye, Withdraw, Brazen Borrower, and Seal of Removal gain value after attacks, blocks, equipment, auras, pump, or commander tax commitments are visible.
-
Let creatures resolve when removal answers them more efficiently. Save permission for noncreature engines or protection fights if Flame Slash, Roast, Lightning Axe, Lightning Bolt, Unholy Heat, Fire // Ice, Lava Dart, Pyrokinesis, Fury, Vapor Snag, or Withdraw can handle the creature at a lower strategic cost.
-
Fight on the stack before combat damage when the exchange protects lethal or prevents lethal. Remove blockers before damage when trample, double blocks, or a protected attacker matters; remove attackers before damage when life total is under visible pressure; bounce your own creature only when the legal action saves a key aura, equipment investment, or commander tax position.
-
Use optional payments and triggers only when mana remains for the real fight. Do not spend mana on low-impact optional value if Counterspell, Mana Leak, Spell Pierce, Negate, Logic Knot, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, Spider-Sense, or a removal spell is needed against an exposed stack or combat threat.
-
Respect graveyard timing. Activate or cast Lava Dart, Grim Lavamancer, Faithless Looting, Detective's Phoenix, Logic Knot, or Advanced Reconstruction lines only when the legal action text confirms the cost and target, and avoid consuming the graveyard before checking visible follow-up actions.
-
Pass priority deliberately when shields are down. If tapped out or nearly tapped out, favor proactive plays only when the opponent lacks visible pressure or the play creates a faster clock; if holding interaction, pass with mana open when the opponent's next spell is more important than adding marginal damage.
-
Card text check required for Spider-Sense, Force of Rage, Leyline of Resonance, Volatile Stormdrake, Sinister Concierge, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, Party Thrasher, Loch Mare, Nova Hellkite, and Spider-Man 2099. Do not assume replacement, copy, protection, trigger, or activated-ability timing unless Veles exposes the exact prompt.
Sideboard Map
-
Treat the sideboard as role compression rather than a new deck. Spider-Man 2099 wants to keep a cheap threat plus tempo-control core after sideboarding; bring in narrow answers only when they answer visible archetype pressure better than flexible main-deck cards.
-
Preserve the protected-threat package unless the matchup makes creature investment unsafe. True-Name Nemesis, Spider-Man 2099, Delver of Secrets, Detective's Phoenix, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Reckless Charge, Maximize Velocity, and Maximize Altitude are the pressure engine; reduce emphasis only when sweepers, edicts, or faster combo make aura/pump commitments unreliable.
Blue Control / Countermagic Mirror Side in: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Dispel; Pithing Needle Cut: Roast; Flame Slash; Propaganda; Force of Rage
-
Pyroblast is best against blue permission, blue card draw, blue commanders, and blue tempo threats. Use it as stack interaction first, then as removal only when a visible blue permanent blocks the winning line.
-
Red Elemental Blast mirrors Pyroblast as a second one-mana blue fight card. Prioritize it for protecting Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or a Combat Research carrier from blue interaction.
-
Dispel is strongest when the opponent trades on instants. Use it to win counter wars, protect a threat from instant-speed removal, or stop instant draw/bounce that would undo a large tempo turn.
-
Pithing Needle enters when a commander, planeswalker, equipment, artifact, land, or activated engine is a repeatable problem. Name only from public information or from a card Veles exposes as legally nameable; do not guess hidden cards.
-
Bad when: Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast lose value against nonblue decks; Dispel is weak against creature-heavy and sorcery-heavy pressure; Pithing Needle is poor when the opponent has no visible activated card that matters.
Red Aggro / Burn / Small Creatures Side in: Hydroblast; Abrade; Brotherhood's End; Aetherize Cut: Spell Pierce; Wash Away; Occult Epiphany; Combat Research
-
Hydroblast is the premium red safety valve. Use it on lethal burn, red commanders, red haste threats, or red removal aimed at the one threat carrying the game.
-
Abrade improves the early-board exchange when the opponent presents creatures or artifacts. Choose the creature-removal mode against damage pressure and the artifact mode only when the artifact is more important than life-total stabilization.
-
Brotherhood's End is a reset tool for creature swarms and artifact boards. Cast it when the visible exchange preserves more life and future material than your own creatures would provide; avoid it when your protected threat is already racing successfully.
-
Aetherize punishes wide attacks and all-in combat turns. Hold it when the opponent can be induced to attack with multiple creatures, especially when Propaganda taxes attacks or when bounce creates a lethal counterattack.
-
Bad when: Hydroblast is narrow against nonred decks; Aetherize is weak against one large attacker or noncombat combo; Brotherhood's End is poor when your own board is the only meaningful board; Abrade is medium when no artifact and no small creature matter.
Artifacts / Equipment / Prison Permanents Side in: Abrade; Vandalblast; Pithing Needle; Brotherhood's End Cut: Lava Dart; Roast; Reckless Charge; Maximize Altitude
-
Vandalblast is the dedicated artifact answer. Use it early on a single artifact that blocks mana, combat, or protection, and consider the larger mode only when Veles exposes enough mana and the visible artifact count justifies spending the full turn.
-
Abrade is the flexible bridge card in artifact matchups. Prefer Abrade over pure burn when the opponent can present either a creature or a key artifact and the main deck needs live interaction across more draw steps.
-
Pithing Needle changes role here from control tool to artifact-engine containment. It is strongest against activated artifacts, equipment that must activate, artifact lands with abilities, or a commander whose activated ability dominates combat.
-
Brotherhood's End changes role here from creature sweeper to artifact sweeper. Choose the mode according to visible permanents; do not assume it answers a card type unless the legal action text confirms the mode.
-
Bad when: Vandalblast is low impact against decks with only incidental artifacts; Pithing Needle is low impact against static abilities; Brotherhood's End may damage your own board; Abrade is merely fair if the opponent’s threats exceed its damage range.
Graveyard Combo / Creature Recursion Side in: Grafdigger's Cage; Dispel; Pithing Needle Cut: Lava Dart; Maximize Velocity; Propaganda
-
Grafdigger's Cage is the graveyard and library-permission hate card. Deploy it before committing graveyard-reliant plans of your own, and re-check legal text before relying on it against any specific recursion or cast-from-zone effect.
-
Dispel supports Grafdigger's Cage by fighting instant-speed removal or combo protection. Hold Dispel when the opponent must answer the hate card before continuing.
-
Pithing Needle is the backup hate card against activated graveyard engines or commanders. Name only visible or previously revealed cards when the prompt permits that name.
-
Role change: Faithless Looting, Lava Dart, Logic Knot, Grim Lavamancer, Detective's Phoenix, Unholy Heat, and Advanced Reconstruction may lose some internal synergy when Grafdigger's Cage is active. Keep the hate card when it hurts the opponent more than it slows your own graveyard use.
-
Bad when: Grafdigger's Cage is poor against graveyard decks that only use the graveyard as a counting resource; Dispel misses permanent-based engines; Pithing Needle misses triggered and static effects.
Wide Creature Boards / Token Pressure Side in: Brotherhood's End; Aetherize; Abrade; Hydroblast Cut: Spell Pierce; Mana Leak; Occult Epiphany; Leyline of Resonance
-
Brotherhood's End is the first role card against wide boards when your life total is under pressure. Use it before the opponent’s board grows beyond the relevant damage mode, unless keeping your own board wins faster.
-
Aetherize is the best catch-up card when the opponent must attack to win. Favor lines that leave mana open and invite an attack rather than tapping down for low-impact pressure.
-
Abrade handles the single creature that survives or matters most before a sweeper turn. Use it to keep life high enough for Spider-Man 2099 or an evasive creature to stabilize the race.
-
Hydroblast enters here only when the wide-board deck is red. Its role is to stop the highest-damage red spell or creature, not to trade down on minor setup.
-
Bad when: Aetherize is weak against static board engines; Brotherhood's End can be awkward behind your own creatures; Hydroblast is narrow outside red pressure; Abrade may be too small against large creatures.
Spell Combo / Stack-Centric Combo Side in: Dispel; Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Grafdigger's Cage Cut: Flame Slash; Roast; Propaganda; Mirror Shield
-
Dispel is the cleanest stack card against instant-heavy combo. Keep mana open when the opponent is near a visible combo turn, even if a proactive creature is legal.
-
Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast enter only when the combo deck uses blue spells or blue protection. Their role is to stop the payoff, the protection spell, or the card-selection spell that makes waiting worse.
-
Grafdigger's Cage enters when the combo uses graveyard or library casting. If the legal game state does not show that axis, treat it as conditional and avoid keeping a weak hand just because Cage is present.
-
Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature-only removal, Propaganda, and equipment protection that does not interact with the combo turn.
-
Bad when: blast effects do nothing against nonblue combo; Grafdigger's Cage can be irrelevant against hand-and-stack combo; Dispel misses sorcery-speed payoff cards.
Big Creatures / Midrange Commanders Side in: Abrade; Aetherize; Pithing Needle Cut: Lava Dart; Spell Pierce; Light Up the Stage
-
Abrade is a flexible answer to utility creatures and artifact support, but do not overvalue it against creatures larger than its damage mode. Pair it with bounce, burn, or combat only when Veles shows a legal combined line.
-
Aetherize is a tempo reset against expensive attackers. Use it when returning the attack force buys a full turn for evasive damage, commander pressure, or a protected Combat Research carrier.
-
Pithing Needle is strongest against commanders or permanents whose activated abilities dominate combat, removal, or card advantage. It is not a substitute for removal when the problem is only power and toughness.
-
Add role cards: efficient creature/artifact answers, combat reset effects, and activated-ability containment.
-
Reduce main-deck emphasis: one-damage effects, soft permission on the draw, and slow card-advantage spells when the board is already dangerous.
-
Bad when: Aetherize can strand mana against noncombat threats; Pithing Needle can miss if the threat is triggered or static; Abrade may not kill the main threat.
General Sideboard Rules
-
Add Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast only when blue cards are central to the opponent’s plan. Keep them as protection for your best threat unless a blue payoff must be stopped immediately.
-
Add Hydroblast only when red threats, red removal, or red burn decide the game. Use it defensively at low life and offensively when it clears the final blocker or protects lethal pressure.
-
Add Abrade when both creature pressure and artifact pressure are plausible. Its value is flexibility; do not bring it for a matchup where neither mode has a high-value target.
-
Add Vandalblast when artifacts are a primary resource or lock piece. It is not for decks with only a stray mana artifact unless that card is visibly decisive.
-
Add Grafdigger's Cage when graveyard or library-cast lines are central. Reassess your own graveyard cards before keeping slow hands that rely on Faithless Looting, Lava Dart, Grim Lavamancer, Logic Knot, Detective's Phoenix, or Advanced Reconstruction.
-
Add Pithing Needle when a named activated ability is a repeatable problem. Prefer public, visible, or revealed names; avoid speculative naming if another interactive card answers the current board.
-
Add Brotherhood's End when small creatures or artifacts are expected in clusters. Keep your own board light until the sweeper decision is resolved.
-
Add Dispel when the deciding fight is instant-speed. It is a protection card, counter-war card, and combo-interruption card, not a general answer to permanents.
-
Add Aetherize when combat volume decides the race. It is strongest when the opponent must attack with several creatures and weakest when the opponent can win without attacking.
Matchup Guidance
-
Aggro: Prioritize life total, board parity, and one-for-one removal before speculative pressure. Keep hands with early red removal such as Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, Unholy Heat, Lightning Strike, Flame Slash, Fire // Ice, or Vapor Snag plus enough mana to double-spell by turn three; mulligan slow hands that only contain Occult Epiphany, Propaganda, Leyline of Resonance, or expensive threats without early interaction. Spider-Man 2099 should enter only when the legal line stabilizes or races immediately; Card text check required for exact commander combat and trigger incentives. Sideboard toward Brotherhood's End, Hydroblast against red, Abrade when creatures or artifacts overlap, and Aetherize when attacks are the opponent's primary damage source.
-
Control: Force the opponent to answer cheap, resilient, or evasive threats while preserving stack interaction for their swing turns. Lead with Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Loyal Apprentice, True-Name Nemesis, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or Detective's Phoenix when Veles shows a clean curve, then protect the highest-pressure permanent with Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Mana Leak, Negate, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, or Dispel. Do not tap out for slow card advantage unless the opponent is shields-down or the board already demands an answer. Combat Research and Clout of the Dominus belong on creatures that can keep connecting or are protected from visible removal; Mirror Shield and Swiftfoot Boots matter when one protected threat can invalidate spot removal.
-
Combo: Identify whether the combo is stack-based, graveyard-based, artifact-based, commander-based, or creature-board based before spending interaction. Hold Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, Spell Pierce, Wash Away, Logic Knot, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Dispel, or Hydroblast for the card that wins or protects the win, not for routine setup, unless the opponent’s visible resources make waiting worse. Grafdigger's Cage enters only when graveyard or library-cast text is relevant; Pithing Needle enters only when a visible or revealed activated ability is a repeatable combo component. Pressure still matters: Delver of Secrets, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and Spider-Man 2099 shorten the window so counters can trade for fewer turns.
-
Tempo: Fight for mana efficiency and avoid exposing a single expensive play to cheap bounce or counters. Sequence one-mana interaction and cheap threats first, use Repeal, Vapor Snag, Blink of an Eye, Withdraw, and Seal of Removal to preserve attacks or reset opposing tempo threats, and cast Expressive Iteration or Light Up the Stage only when the land drop and follow-up spell can be used. Against blue tempo, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Dispel are premium; against red tempo, Hydroblast protects life and key threats. Avoid equipment-heavy starts with Swiftfoot Boots or Mirror Shield if they consume a full turn without improving the current legal attack or block.
-
Midrange: Make every exchange either preserve a threat that snowballs or answer the permanent that blocks your pressure. Use Lightning Axe, Roast, Flame Slash, Unholy Heat, Fury, Pyrokinesis, Abrade, and Brotherhood's End according to visible toughness and board size; do not spend premium removal on creatures that Propaganda, bounce, or racing already contains. True-Name Nemesis, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Detective's Phoenix, and Spider-Man 2099 are the pressure cards that can outlast removal-heavy exchanges if protected. Card text check required for Sinister Concierge, Party Thrasher, Loch Mare, Floodpits Drowner, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, and Nova Hellkite; treat their use as conditional on legal text and board role shown by the engine.
-
Big mana: Punish setup turns and save counters for payoffs, not every ramp-like action. Keep fast pressure plus interaction over slow reactive hands, because soft permission such as Spell Pierce and Mana Leak loses value once the opponent has excess mana. Use Pithing Needle when the big-mana plan relies on an activated commander, land, or artifact visible to Veles; use Vandalblast or Abrade when artifacts are the resource engine; use Aetherize when the payoff is a large attacking board. Wash Away is high-value against command-zone or cast-from-nonhand lines only when legal text confirms the target.
-
Graveyard: Separate graveyard-as-resource from graveyard-as-engine before boarding or targeting. Grafdigger's Cage is strongest when the opponent must cast from the graveyard or library, but it can conflict with your own Faithless Looting, Lava Dart, Grim Lavamancer, Logic Knot, Detective's Phoenix, Unholy Heat, and Advanced Reconstruction lines; keep it only when opponent disruption is worth that cost. Grim Lavamancer and Dragon's Rage Channeler are useful when they convert graveyard density into damage or selection, but do not exile cards needed for Logic Knot, Unholy Heat thresholds, or Detective's Phoenix recursion unless the immediate legal action stabilizes or wins. Pithing Needle can supplement Cage against activated graveyard engines.
-
Artifact/enchantment: Use the sideboard flexibly because the main deck has more bounce and burn than permanent destruction. Abrade is the first answer when the opponent presents artifacts alongside creatures; Vandalblast is for artifact density or a single artifact that defines their engine; Brotherhood's End is for clustered small artifacts or artifact creatures. Repeal, Blink of an Eye, Withdraw, Brazen Borrower, and Seal of Removal buy tempo against noncreature permanents only when Veles shows a legal target and the return meaningfully changes the current turn. Against enchantment-heavy decks, lean on pressure, counters, and bounce because this sideboard has no dedicated enchantment removal.
-
Go-wide: Shift from racing to containment unless your evasive lethal clock is already clear. Propaganda is a main-deck stabilizer when attacks are the route to victory, while Brotherhood's End and Aetherize are the sideboard cards that punish commitment. Fury, Pyrokinesis, Fire // Ice, Lava Dart, and Force of Rage can manage small creatures, but verify legal targets and costs before assuming a multi-kill. Avoid overcommitting Delver of Secrets, Loyal Apprentice tokens, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider material, or Gut, True Soul Zealot fodder into your own Brotherhood's End unless the damage race demands it.
-
Single-threat: Answer or race the one permanent according to whether it can be targeted, blocked, bounced, or countered. Vapor Snag, Repeal, Blink of an Eye, Brazen Borrower, Seal of Removal, Aetherize, and Withdraw are high-tempo answers to large or protected attackers, while Lightning Axe, Roast, Flame Slash, Unholy Heat, Abrade, and Lightning Bolt apply when visible toughness and restrictions allow. Pithing Needle is correct only if the threat’s activated ability, not its body or static text, is the problem. True-Name Nemesis, Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, and Mirror Shield help win single-threat races when your protected carrier connects repeatedly.
-
Burn: Treat life total as the main resource and make the opponent spend damage on creatures. Hydroblast, Dispel, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Mana Leak, Negate, Lazotep Plating, and Turn Aside protect against the high-impact burn turn, while Swiftwater Cliffs and other tapped lands are acceptable only if the tempo loss does not expose lethal. Avoid unnecessary Shivan Reef damage when alternate mana exists. Do not cast Faithless Looting, Light Up the Stage, or Expressive Iteration in a way that skips needed blockers or mana for interaction.
-
Removal-heavy decks: Diversify threats and hold protection until it preserves a clock or card-advantage carrier. Lead with recursive or low-investment threats before committing Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, or Leyline of Resonance. Lazotep Plating and Turn Aside should protect Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis support pieces, Mercurial Spelldancer, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or a lethal attacker rather than a replaceable creature. Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Dispel, and Hydroblast enter when the removal colors and card types match the opponent’s revealed plan.
Specific Matchup Notes
-
General/archetype-only: Treat every note here as a starting profile because no exact opponent decklists are supplied; revealed cards, legal actions, and engine prompts override archetype assumptions. Add role cards according to the revealed plan rather than the label alone, and use priority decisions to protect Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Mercurial Spelldancer, or a live Combat Research carrier only when that permanent is actually advancing the current game.
-
Blue tempo/control: Add role cards: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Dispel, and Pithing Needle when a visible activated ability is central. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow equipment turns with Swiftfoot Boots or Mirror Shield, expensive burn pointed at low-impact creatures, and tapout draw that cannot use Expressive Iteration or Light Up the Stage efficiently. Priority targets are opposing counters on your key threat, bounce aimed at your enchanted or equipped creature, and commanders or engines that make soft permission weak later.
-
Red aggro/burn: Add role cards: Hydroblast, Abrade when artifacts or creatures matter, and Brotherhood's End only when small-board density is visible. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Shivan Reef damage, slow tapped-land sequences, Faithless Looting lines that lose a blocker, and Light Up the Stage turns that spend mana needed for Lightning Bolt, Fire // Ice, Vapor Snag, or Counterspell. Priority targets are haste attackers, lethal burn windows, and any combat step where Propaganda or Aetherize changes the race.
-
Creature midrange: Add role cards: Abrade, Aetherize, Brotherhood's End, and Pithing Needle for activated commanders or value permanents. Reduce main-deck emphasis: narrow counters after the opponent has mana advantage, low-pressure cantrip turns, and protection on replaceable bodies. Use Flame Slash, Roast, Lightning Axe, Unholy Heat, Fury, Pyrokinesis, and Ghostfire Slice only after checking visible toughness, damage marked, and target restrictions.
-
Artifact-centric decks: Add role cards: Vandalblast, Abrade, Brotherhood's End, and Pithing Needle. Reduce main-deck emphasis: bounce-only answers if the permanent will immediately replay and still block your plan. Priority targets are artifact mana that jumps the opponent past Mana Leak, artifact creatures that pressure life, and activated artifacts that invalidate your tempo plan.
-
Graveyard engines: Add role cards: Grafdigger's Cage and Pithing Needle when the opponent’s revealed plan depends on graveyard, library, or activated recursion. Reduce main-deck emphasis: graveyard self-use that conflicts with Grafdigger's Cage, including Faithless Looting flashback, Lava Dart flashback, Grim Lavamancer fuel, Logic Knot fuel, Detective's Phoenix recursion, and Unholy Heat threshold. Prioritize stopping the engine over a single medium creature unless the creature presents lethal.
-
Go-wide combat: Add role cards: Brotherhood's End and Aetherize. Reduce main-deck emphasis: single-target burn on nonessential attackers and creature deployment that walks into your own sweep. Propaganda is a key stabilizer, while Force of Rage, Fire // Ice, Lava Dart, Fury, and Pyrokinesis handle small bodies if Veles exposes legal targets and costs.
Risk Summary
-
Mana risk: This Izzet singleton manabase has many tapped lands and color requirements, so keep decisions must verify early blue for Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, Spell Pierce, Repeal, Vapor Snag, and Expressive Iteration while preserving red for Lightning Bolt, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Faithless Looting, and removal.
-
Matchup risk: The deck can mis-role itself by playing control against a bigger late game or racing into a faster deck, so reassess role after each revealed threat, commander, and sideboard card.
-
Draw risk: Faithless Looting, Light Up the Stage, Expressive Iteration, Occult Epiphany, and Dragon's Rage Channeler can improve velocity, but they are poor when they consume mana needed for a blocker, counter, removal spell, or commander protection.
-
Over-sideboarding risk: Adding Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Abrade, Vandalblast, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, Brotherhood's End, Dispel, or Aetherize without a revealed target profile can dilute the pressure package and leave Spider-Man 2099 without a clock.
-
Graveyard risk: Grim Lavamancer, Lava Dart, Logic Knot, Unholy Heat, Faithless Looting, Detective's Phoenix, Dragon's Rage Channeler, and Advanced Reconstruction compete for graveyard resources, so exile and flashback choices must check future thresholds before spending cards.
-
Sweeper/removal risk: Brotherhood's End, Fury, Pyrokinesis, Fire // Ice, Force of Rage, and Lava Dart can damage your own board plan, especially Delver of Secrets, Loyal Apprentice material, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider tokens, Gut, True Soul Zealot fodder, and Combat Research carriers.
-
Closer risk: True-Name Nemesis, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Detective's Phoenix, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Nova Hellkite, and Spider-Man 2099 must actually end the game; do not protect a threat that is not connecting, scaling, or forcing meaningful blocks. Card text check required for Spider-Man 2099, Sinister Concierge, Party Thrasher, Loch Mare, Floodpits Drowner, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, and Nova Hellkite.
-
Interaction risk: Soft counters lose value as mana grows, so Spell Pierce and Mana Leak should answer early haymakers or protection windows rather than low-impact setup. Harder interaction such as Counterspell, Negate, Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Dispel should align with the spell type Veles shows.
-
Sequencing risk: Aura/equipment turns with Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, and Mirror Shield are punished by instant removal or bounce unless protection mana, opponent shields-down status, or immediate damage is visible.
Test Feedback Checklist
-
Deciding factor: Identify the exact turn, visible threat, stack exchange, or combat step that decided the game, and record whether Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Mercurial Spelldancer, Combat Research, or a burn finish was the actual path to victory or the abandoned plan.
-
Mulligans: Record whether the opener had both functional colors and an early role card, especially Island or Command Tower for Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Vapor Snag, Expressive Iteration, and Repeal, or Mountain for Dragon's Rage Channeler, Faithless Looting, Lightning Bolt, Lava Dart, and Flame Slash.
-
Mana: Note every loss or stutter caused by tapped lands, Shivan Reef damage, Izzet Boilerworks tempo, missing blue interaction, missing red removal, or failing to sequence Fabled Passage before a surveil, draw, or exile-to-play effect.
-
Velocity: Track whether Faithless Looting, Expressive Iteration, Light Up the Stage, Occult Epiphany, Dragon's Rage Channeler, and Laelia, the Blade Reforged created usable cards or stranded spells that could not be cast before the timing window closed.
-
Engines: Record whether Combat Research, Clout of the Dominus, Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Leyline of Resonance, Advanced Reconstruction, Grim Lavamancer, Detective's Phoenix, and Squee, Dubious Monarch advanced the board or consumed mana better held for interaction.
-
Removal: Check whether Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, Ghostfire Slice, Unholy Heat, Flame Slash, Roast, Lightning Axe, Fire // Ice, Fury, Pyrokinesis, Force of Rage, Vapor Snag, Repeal, Withdraw, and Seal of Removal answered the highest-pressure visible permanent.
-
Protection: Record whether Turn Aside, Lazotep Plating, Spell Pierce, Mana Leak, Negate, Counterspell, Wash Away, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Dispel were held for decisive windows or spent on low-impact spells.
-
Sideboard: Record whether Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Abrade, Vandalblast, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, Brotherhood's End, Dispel, and Aetherize had visible targets after boarding, and whether any sideboard card conflicted with the active game plan.
-
Closing: Note whether the deck failed to convert early damage into lethal, especially with Delver of Secrets, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Loyal Apprentice, Gut, True Soul Zealot, Detective's Phoenix, True-Name Nemesis, Nova Hellkite, or commander pressure.
-
Role: Record each turn where the pilot should have switched from tempo to control, control to race, or setup to closing, and name the visible board state that justified the role change.
-
Mistakes: Flag any legal-action choice that ignored known information, including attacking with a needed blocker, passing with removal up under a short clock, tapping out before a key opposing turn, or protecting a creature that was not winning.
-
Stranded cards: List every card stuck in hand for two or more turns because of mana, timing, target restrictions, graveyard shortage, opponent shields, or unsuitable board state.
-
Overperformers and underperformers: Record which exact cards changed win probability, and separate true card strength from matchup-specific context or pilot error.
First Tuning Questions
-
Mana base: Are Cori Mountain Monastery, Highland Lake, Izzet Guildgate, Molten Tributary, Prismari Campus, Spectacle Summit, Swiftwater Cliffs, Temple of Epiphany, Izzet Boilerworks, Restless Spire, and Wandering Fumarole creating too many tapped-land turns for a deck that needs cheap pressure plus protection?
-
Color balance: Does the deck miss double blue for Counterspell and blue interaction more often than it misses red for early removal, or does Shivan Reef life loss matter enough against red aggro to reconsider pain-land reliance?
-
Aggro plan: Are Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, Loyal Apprentice, Gut, True Soul Zealot, Khenra Spellspear, Detective's Phoenix, and Laelia, the Blade Reforged enough early pressure without diluting Counterspell, Mana Leak, Negate, and removal density?
-
Control plan: Does Propaganda plus bounce, burn, and permission stabilize against creature decks, or are Brotherhood's End and Aetherize needed more often than the maindeck currently anticipates?
-
Closer package: Are True-Name Nemesis, Spider-Man 2099, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Detective's Phoenix, Squee, Dubious Monarch, Nova Hellkite, Restless Spire, and Wandering Fumarole actually ending games before soft counters expire?
-
Protection package: Are Swiftfoot Boots, Mirror Shield, Clout of the Dominus, Combat Research, Lazotep Plating, Turn Aside, and Spider-Sense too many cards pointed at protecting threats, or does the commander plan need that density?
-
Graveyard pressure: Do Grim Lavamancer, Lava Dart, Logic Knot, Unholy Heat, Faithless Looting, Detective's Phoenix, Dragon's Rage Channeler, and Advanced Reconstruction compete for the same graveyard resources often enough to weaken each other?
-
Removal mix: Are Flame Slash, Roast, Lightning Axe, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, Pyrokinesis, and Force of Rage correctly sized for the creatures actually faced, or does the deck need more stack interaction and fewer sorcery-speed creature answers?
-
Sideboard slots: Are Grafdigger's Cage and Pithing Needle solving enough matchups to justify their slots, and are Abrade plus Vandalblast both needed when artifact decks are not a major share of the field?
-
Blast package: Are Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Dispel winning stack fights often enough, or are they too narrow when opponents present permanents that must be answered on board?
-
Role conflict: Is the list losing because it draws tempo threats in control games or reactive cards in race games, and which exact cards most often appear in the wrong role?
-
Card text checks: Do Spider-Man 2099, Sinister Concierge, Party Thrasher, Loch Mare, Floodpits Drowner, Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon, Nova Hellkite, Spider-Sense, Leyline of Resonance, Advanced Reconstruction, Impractical Joke, and Ghostfire Slice perform as assumed after rules-engine verification?

Avoid when: opponent has a visible must-answer permanent, lethal pressure, or mana must stay open for a known high-impact stack fight. Instructions: Lead with one-mana pressure before two-mana pressure when both are legal. Attach Combat Research only to a creature that can legally attack or is hard to block from visible state; do not spend the aura into open removal when another threat plus protection is available. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Tapped-Land And Bounce-Land Sequencing
Priority: Medium Decision families: mana Cards: Izzet Boilerworks; Temple of Epiphany; Prismari Campus; Highland Lake; Izzet Guildgate; Molten Tributary; Swiftwater Cliffs; Cori Mountain Monastery; Spectacle Summit; Restless Spire; Wandering Fumarole; Fabled Passage Phase windows: main phases before land play Runtime cues: action:play Izzet Boilerworks; action:play Temple of Epiphany; action:play Fabled Passage Use when: multiple land plays are legal. Avoid when: the rules engine exposes only one legal land action. Instructions: Play tapped lands on turns where no one-mana interaction is needed. Delay Izzet Boilerworks until returning a tapped land or when the lost tempo does not expose life total or commander setup. Use Fabled Passage before surveil, scry, or exile-to-play actions when the shuffle can matter. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Exact Fetch Execution
Priority: Low Decision families: mana Cards: Fabled Passage; Island; Mountain Phase windows: main phases, opponent end step when legal Runtime cues: action:activate Fabled Passage Use when: Fabled Passage activation is the selected line and the legal choices include Island or Mountain. Avoid when: both colors are already available and a future shuffle is tactically relevant. Instructions: Choose Island when double-blue interaction is missing from available mana; choose Mountain when red removal or red pressure is stranded. If both colors are present, prefer the color with more uncast spells visible in hand. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Permission Commitment Gate
Priority: High Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Counterspell; Mana Leak; Spell Pierce; Negate; Wash Away; Logic Knot; Dispel; Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Hydroblast Phase windows: any stack window Runtime cues: action:cast Counterspell; action:cast Mana Leak; action:cast Spell Pierce; action:cast Negate; action:cast Wash Away; action:cast Logic Knot Use when: deciding whether to spend permission on a visible spell or ability. Avoid when: the spell is already uncounterable according to engine output or no permission action is legal. Instructions: Counter spells that remove the current win condition, resolve a sweeper, produce a faster clock than your board, or shut off graveyard/tempo engines. Decline to counter low-impact setup when holding removal for board threats and the opponent is not near a decisive turn. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Protection Commitment Gate
Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Turn Aside; Lazotep Plating; Spider-Sense; Swiftfoot Boots; Mirror Shield; Clout of the Dominus Phase windows: stack windows and main phases before committing protection Runtime cues: action:cast Turn Aside; action:cast Lazotep Plating; action:equip Swiftfoot Boots; action:cast Clout of the Dominus Use when: protecting Spider-Man 2099, True-Name Nemesis, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Mercurial Spelldancer, or a creature carrying Combat Research. Avoid when: the protected permanent is not advancing damage, cards, or survival in visible state. Instructions: Spend protection on threats that are already winning or that unlock a decisive next-turn attack. Do not protect a replaceable one-drop if the same mana is needed for Counterspell, Mana Leak, Lightning Bolt, or Vapor Snag against a larger threat. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Commander And Fragile Engine Tap-Out Gate
Priority: High Decision families: priority; mana Cards: Spider-Man 2099; Leyline of Resonance; Advanced Reconstruction; Propaganda; Nova Hellkite; Laelia, the Blade Reforged Phase windows: own main phases with stack empty Runtime cues: action:cast Spider-Man 2099; action:cast Leyline of Resonance; action:cast Advanced Reconstruction; action:cast Nova Hellkite Use when: casting the commander, a fragile engine, or a high-mana finisher would use most available mana. Avoid when: opponent has visible lethal next turn, a known answer from revealed information, or a cheaper line preserves needed interaction. Instructions: Commit only when the permanent changes the current race, stabilizes the board, or threatens a two-turn close. Prefer holding up interaction when already ahead on board unless the legal action text shows immediate protection or a decisive trigger. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Burn And Bounce Target Selection
Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction; selection Cards: Lightning Bolt; Lightning Strike; Ghostfire Slice; Unholy Heat; Flame Slash; Roast; Lightning Axe; Fire // Ice; Vapor Snag; Repeal; Blink of an Eye; Withdraw; Seal of Removal Phase windows: main phases, combat, and stack windows Runtime cues: action:target; action:cast Lightning Bolt; action:cast Vapor Snag; action:cast Repeal Use when: selecting a target for removal, burn, or bounce. Avoid when: the target is protected, illegal, or a spell on stack demands permission first. Instructions: Remove creatures that threaten lethal, stop attacks from True-Name Nemesis or commander damage, invalidate Combat Research, or generate repeated cards. Point burn at the opponent only when visible damage plus legal follow-up damage reaches lethal or forces lethal next turn through known blockers. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Deterministic Lethal Burn Execution
Priority: High Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Lightning Bolt; Lightning Strike; Lava Dart; Fire // Ice Phase windows: any legal burn window Runtime cues: action:target opponent Lightning Bolt; action:target opponent Lightning Strike; action:target opponent Lava Dart Use when: visible opponent life is less than or equal to the selected spell's engine-reported damage and the legal action text targets the opponent. Avoid when: prevention, redirection, ward, tax, or counter action is visible on stack or battlefield. Instructions: Choose the legal target-opponent burn action that immediately reduces opponent life to zero according to visible engine output. If multiple lethal actions exist, use the lowest mana action first. Pilot skill floor: no-api No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Combat Attack Gate
Priority: Medium Decision families: combat Cards: True-Name Nemesis; Kari Zev, Skyship Raider; Loyal Apprentice; Gut, True Soul Zealot; Detective's Phoenix; Squee, Dubious Monarch; Laelia, the Blade Reforged; Restless Spire; Wandering Fumarole Phase windows: declare attackers Runtime cues: prompt:attackers; action:attack Use when: choosing attackers with at least two legal attack configurations. Avoid when: exactly one attack action is legal and it does not change blocker needs. Instructions: Attack when damage advances a two-turn clock, triggers card or token advantage, or pressures planeswalker-like permanents exposed by the engine. Hold back creatures needed to block lethal, protect life under a short clock, or preserve a sacrifice body for Broadside Bombardiers or Gut, True Soul Zealot when visible text supports that use. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Block And Trick Window Gate
Priority: High Decision families: combat; interaction Cards: Broadside Bombardiers; Pyrokinesis; Force of Rage; Fury; Aetherize; Spider-Sense; Vapor Snag; Lightning Bolt; Lava Dart Phase windows: declare blockers, post-block priority, before combat damage Runtime cues: prompt:blockers; action:cast Aetherize; action:cast Pyrokinesis; action:cast Vapor Snag Use when: blocking or using instant-speed interaction can prevent lethal, preserve a key threat, or convert a dying creature into damage. Avoid when: the engine shows no legal block or no relevant instant action. Instructions: Prevent lethal before preserving tempo. After blocks, use sacrifice, burn, bounce, or prevention only when the creature would die anyway, the exchange kills a more important attacker, or Aetherize changes the entire combat outcome. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Card-Flow Timing
Priority: Medium Decision families: selection; priority Cards: Faithless Looting; Expressive Iteration; Light Up the Stage; Occult Epiphany; Impractical Joke; Dragon's Rage Channeler; Laelia, the Blade Reforged Phase windows: own main phases, attack triggers, surveil or selection prompts Runtime cues: action:cast Faithless Looting; action:cast Expressive Iteration; action:cast Light Up the Stage; prompt:select Use when: choosing between card-flow and board interaction. Avoid when: opponent presents lethal or a must-answer permanent and interaction is legal. Instructions: Cast selection before land drop when it can find the correct land. Cast exile-to-play effects only when enough mana and timing remain to use the exiled card. Discard redundant lands, dead narrow answers, or graveyard-synergy cards only after checking Grim Lavamancer, Logic Knot, Unholy Heat, Lava Dart, Detective's Phoenix, and Advanced Reconstruction resource pressure. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Exact Self-Target Pump Or Recast Execution
Priority: Low Decision families: selection; priority Cards: Reckless Charge; Maximize Altitude; Maximize Velocity; Khenra Spellspear; Mercurial Spelldancer Phase windows: own main phase or combat when legal Runtime cues: action:target self Reckless Charge; action:target self Maximize Velocity; action:target self Maximize Altitude Use when: the selected line is to target a creature you control and the legal action text names that spell and target-self choice. Avoid when: blockers, removal, or taxes require a new combat decision. Instructions: Execute the exact target-self action after the light-model has selected the creature and timing. Do not reinterpret the target if the legal action list changes. Pilot skill floor: no-api No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Unknown Or New-Card Text Check
Priority: Medium Decision families: priority; selection; interaction Cards: Spider-Man 2099; Sinister Concierge; Party Thrasher; Loch Mare; Floodpits Drowner; Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon; Nova Hellkite; Spider-Sense; Leyline of Resonance; Advanced Reconstruction; Impractical Joke; Ghostfire Slice Phase windows: any prompt involving listed card text Runtime cues: action:cast Spider-Man 2099; action:activate; prompt:choose Use when: the decision depends on exact text, timing, target restrictions, replacement effects, or trigger rules for a listed card. Avoid when: the engine exposes a single mandatory legal action with no choices. Instructions: Card text check required. Follow legal action labels exactly and avoid assuming hidden abilities, damage amounts, protection, copying, recursion, or tribal bonuses beyond runtime output. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Sideboard Plan Selection
Priority: High Decision families: sideboard Cards: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Hydroblast; Abrade; Vandalblast; Grafdigger's Cage; Pithing Needle; Brotherhood's End; Dispel; Aetherize Phase windows: between games Runtime cues: prompt:sideboard; action:submit sideboard Use when: choosing a legal 10-card sideboard configuration after Game 1 or Game 2. Avoid when: no sideboard action is legal or the registered 100 plus 10 preservation check fails. Instructions: Add blasts and Dispel against blue stack decks, Hydroblast against red pressure, Abrade and Vandalblast against artifacts, Grafdigger's Cage against graveyard or library-cast engines, Pithing Needle against visible activated-card reliance, Brotherhood's End against small creatures or artifacts, and Aetherize against combat swarms. Cut cards whose targets or timing were poor in the previous game, never cards outside the registered main deck. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
