Strategy Specifications
Deck Name And Archetype
Eshki Dragonclaw is a Temur Duel Commander singleton strategy registered as 100 main-deck cards plus a 10-card Veles policy sideboard. The active validation contract says the list passes the command-zone count model: exactly 100 main-deck cards, singleton outside basic lands, 9 Island, 9 Forest, 9 Mountain, and sideboard size exactly 10. Veles should treat Eshki Dragonclaw as the commander and should not report 60-card constructed size errors for this deck.
Format is Duel Commander, and runtime decisions must respect command-zone legality, commander tax, sideboard policy legality, and the exact legal actions returned by the rules engine. The supplied validation confirms deck-count legality only; it does not prove every card is format-legal, current Oracle text is known, or every card interaction is implemented in the wrapped engine. Card text check required for unfamiliar or recently printed names such as Eshki Dragonclaw, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Pinnacle Monk, Hauntwoods Shrieker, Tam, Mindful First-Year, Studious First-Year, Ornery Tumblewagg, Temur Battlecrier, Bloodbraid Challenger, Spider-Punk, Banishing Betrayal, Iroh's Demonstration, Cunning Coyote, Balustrade Wurm, Ghostfire Slice, Floodpits Drowner, Pawpatch Formation, It'll Quench Ya!, and Sodden Verdure before making text-specific claims.
Archetype classification is rogue-hybrid rather than stock. The tags are combo, control, and tribal, but the registered cards show a flexible Temur tempo-control shell with cheap selection, cheap interaction, early creatures, mana acceleration, and a likely commander-centric or creature-type payoff plan. Pilot the deck as a proactive control-combo deck: build mana and velocity early with Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Preordain, Brainstorm, and Expressive Iteration, then convert a stable board into commander pressure, burst damage, protected combat, or a larger threat such as Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, or Undermountain Adventurer.
Color identity is Temur: blue, red, and green. Mana quality is a major pilot concern because the deck wants green early for Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Cankerbloom, Growth Spiral, and Deeproot Wayfinder; blue early for Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Preordain, Brainstorm, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Unsubstantiate, Unsummon, Brazen Borrower, Frantic Search, Snap, and Prismari Charm; and red early for Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Zurgo Bellstriker, Searslicer Goblin, Loyal Apprentice, Ghostfire Slice, Atarka's Command, Gruul Charm, and Fury. Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, Dreamroot Cascade, Sulfur Falls, Cinder Glade, Hinterland Harbor, Rootbound Crag, Fabled Passage, and Ash Barrens matter disproportionately because the list contains many single-pip spells across all three colors and only one copy of each fixing land.
The role identity is adaptive, not linear. Against fast creature decks, Eshki Dragonclaw should behave like a removal-tempo deck that preserves life, trades early, and stabilizes before committing expensive threats. Against slower control or combo opponents, it should become a pressure-plus-permission deck that deploys a threat, protects it with Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Malevolent Hermit, and Siren Stormtamer, and uses cantrips to avoid flooding or missing interaction. Against graveyard or artifact engines, main-deck Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Cankerbloom, Armored Scrapgorger, and sideboard Grafdigger's Cage, Endurance, Ancient Grudge, Abrade, Force of Vigor, and Pithing Needle define the hate package.
Opponent information status is unknown at guide-load time. Do not assume a metagame seat, hidden hand contents, commander identity, library contents, or sideboard configuration unless the match context, revealed information, game log, or visible rules-engine state provides it. When a policy references opposing archetypes later in the guide, it must remain conditional on observed cards, public commander identity, visible permanents, public graveyards, stack objects, revealed cards, and legal action text.
Thesis
Eshki Dragonclaw assembles cheap mana, cheap card selection, flexible interaction, and a protected creature threat before turning the corner with commander pressure or large Temur finishers. The deck wants to spend the first turns fixing colors with Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, and the correct basic land mix, while using Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Preordain, Brainstorm, Expressive Iteration, and Frantic Search to find the missing piece for the current game state.
Eshki Dragonclaw wins by converting tempo into protected damage, not by ignoring the opponent until a single scripted combo appears. The primary winning pattern is to stick Eshki Dragonclaw or another must-answer creature, keep mana or protection available, and force the opponent to act into Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Unsubstantiate, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Siren Stormtamer, or Malevolent Hermit. The backup winning pattern is to stabilize with removal and bounce, then end the game with Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, Bloodbraid Challenger, Brazen Borrower, Fury, Loyal Apprentice, Searslicer Goblin, Zurgo Bellstriker, or other board pressure.
Prioritize mana quality before clever sequencing because the deck is singleton Temur and color-hungry. Keep green access for ramp and board development, blue access for selection and permission, and red access for damage-based interaction and pressure. Do not spend early cantrips casually when the hand lacks a second land, a key color, or a coherent turn-two play.
Do not pilot this list as a pure draw-go control deck, a pure burn deck, or a deterministic all-in combo deck. It has Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Atarka's Command, Gruul Charm, Prismari Charm, Fury, Unsummon, Snap, and Brazen Borrower for tempo swings, but these cards should normally buy attacks, protect a threat, answer a decisive permanent, or survive a race rather than trade down automatically.
Treat tribal and commander-specific assumptions as conditional until card text is confirmed by the engine. Card text check required for Eshki Dragonclaw and several newer names; if legal actions expose a creature-type payoff, combat trigger, copied spell, discount, or other engine action, prioritize it only when the visible board, mana, and opponent interaction make the payoff better than a normal tempo-control line.
Role Package
-
Threats: Eshki Dragonclaw is the command-zone anchor and should be deployed when the mana, protection, and board state make it likely to matter before it is answered. Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Pinnacle Monk, Floodpits Drowner, Hauntwoods Shrieker, Studious First-Year, Tam, Mindful First-Year, Searslicer Goblin, Loyal Apprentice, Deeproot Wayfinder, Den Protector, Ornery Tumblewagg, Bloodbraid Challenger, Spider-Punk, Temur Battlecrier, Cunning Coyote, Brazen Borrower, Undermountain Adventurer, Tyrranax Rex, and Balustrade Wurm are pressure or board-presence cards, with text-specific lines conditional on engine output.
-
Payoffs: Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, Fury, Atarka's Command, Iroh's Demonstration, Temur Battlecrier, Bloodbraid Challenger, and Eshki Dragonclaw are the cards most likely to convert setup into a decisive swing. Card text check required for Iroh's Demonstration, Temur Battlecrier, Bloodbraid Challenger, and Balustrade Wurm before assuming exact damage, token, cascade-like, or combat-modifier behavior.
-
Engines: Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, Deeproot Wayfinder, Hunter's Talent, Den Protector, Reclaim, and Frantic Search create resource loops or advantage over time. Preserve these when the matchup is slow; cash them in faster when visible pressure threatens life total or commander recasts.
-
Velocity: Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Preordain, Brainstorm, Expressive Iteration, Frantic Search, Growth Spiral, and Prismari Charm should solve immediate constraints first: land count, missing color, interaction window, threat density, or protection. Brainstorm is stronger with Fabled Passage or Ash Barrens available, but do not delay it if the hand cannot function.
-
Interaction: Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, It'll Quench Ya!, Prismari Charm, Unsubstantiate, Unsummon, Snap, Brazen Borrower, Gruul Charm, Cankerbloom, Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, and Banishing Betrayal are the main ways to interrupt the opponent. Card text check required for Ghostfire Slice, It'll Quench Ya!, and Banishing Betrayal before making text-specific target priorities.
-
Protection: Siren Stormtamer, Malevolent Hermit, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Lavaspur Boots, Daze, Spell Pierce, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, and Unsubstantiate protect key threats or tempo leads. Hold these for Eshki Dragonclaw, a lethal attack, a high-impact engine, or a removal spell that would undo multiple turns.
-
Recursion and graveyard utility: Reclaim, Den Protector, Armored Scrapgorger, Soul-Guide Lantern, and Tormod's Crypt define graveyard interaction from different angles. Use Reclaim and Den Protector to rebuy the card that matches the visible problem, not automatically the most expensive card.
-
Mana module: The deck relies on 9 Island, 9 Forest, 9 Mountain, Command Tower, Dreamroot Cascade, Fabled Passage, Sodden Verdure, Sulfur Falls, Cinder Glade, Exotic Orchard, Hinterland Harbor, Rootbound Crag, Ash Barrens, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, and Growth Spiral to cast three-color singleton spells on curve. Card text check required for Sodden Verdure.
-
Sideboard module: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Veil of Summer, Endurance, Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, and Grafdigger's Cage are narrow role cards. Bring them in only through exact legal Sideboard Map plans or matchup-specific rules later in this guide.
Primary Win Conditions
-
Protected commander pressure: Win by resolving Eshki Dragonclaw into a board where attacks, triggers, or card-text-specific engine actions can matter before removal resets the turn cycle. Set up with Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, green ramp, blue selection, and protection from Siren Stormtamer, Malevolent Hermit, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Spell Pierce, Daze, Memory Lapse, Counterspell, or Unsubstantiate. Execute by committing Eshki Dragonclaw when at least one visible protection line, tempo answer, or follow-up threat is available; do not run the commander into open interaction just because it is castable. Prioritize this path against slower opponents, boards without lethal pressure, or hands where commander damage and tribal/combo text are the clearest conversion point. Card text check required for exact Eshki Dragonclaw payoff assumptions.
-
Tempo-creature snowball: Win by turning cheap creatures and bounce/removal into repeated attacks before the opponent stabilizes. Set up with Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Floodpits Drowner, Hauntwoods Shrieker, Studious First-Year, Tam, Mindful First-Year, Searslicer Goblin, Loyal Apprentice, Deeproot Wayfinder, Ornery Tumblewagg, Spider-Punk, Cunning Coyote, or Brazen Borrower, then clear blockers with Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Unsummon, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Prismari Charm, Gruul Charm, or Fury. Execute by spending interaction on blockers or stabilizers that stop multiple attacks, not on low-impact permanents. Prioritize this path when the opening hand has one- and two-mana pressure plus enough mana to double-spell.
-
Large finisher conversion: Win by surviving into Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, Bloodbraid Challenger, Temur Battlecrier, Iroh's Demonstration, Fury, or a protected Brazen Borrower clock. Set up with Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, and cantrips that hit land drops. Execute by forcing the opponent to answer smaller threats first, then deploy the finisher with protection or permission available when possible. Prioritize this path when early pressure is contained, the opponent is trading one-for-one, or the game has reached a resource-heavy board. Card text check required for Balustrade Wurm, Bloodbraid Challenger, Temur Battlecrier, and Iroh's Demonstration before assuming exact payoff behavior.
-
Burn and combat reach: Win by converting a stable board into lethal with Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Atarka's Command, Prismari Charm, Gruul Charm, Fury, or combat-modifier legal actions exposed by the engine. Set up by tracking opponent life, available attackers, blockers, and open mana every priority window. Execute only when visible actions show lethal or a strong two-turn clock; avoid firing reach spells early if they are needed to remove a blocker or protect a race. Prioritize this path when the opponent is low, shields are down, or combat plus one spell ends the game.
Secondary Win Conditions
-
Value recursion wins attrition games by rebuying the exact card that solves the visible position. Use Reclaim or Den Protector for Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Fury, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Brazen Borrower, Prismari Charm, Lightning Bolt, or a missing engine piece according to current pressure. Do not default to the most expensive card; rebuy interaction when dying, a threat when stable, and mana or selection only when the hand cannot function.
-
Soft graveyard containment wins by shrinking the opponent's recursion plan while your creatures keep attacking. Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, Cankerbloom, and sideboarded Endurance or Grafdigger's Cage can buy decisive turns, but the main deck is not a hard prison deck. Use graveyard hate when the opponent's public graveyard, visible legal actions, or known matchup plan makes the graveyard immediately relevant; otherwise keep pressure and mana development ahead of speculative hate.
-
Equipment or protection-backed pressure can turn any surviving creature into a must-answer threat. Lavaspur Boots, Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, Siren Stormtamer, and Malevolent Hermit should protect the creature that represents the fastest clock, the commander engine, or the only stabilizing blocker. Do not spend protection on a replaceable small creature when Tyrranax Rex, Eshki Dragonclaw, Balustrade Wurm, or a lethal attacker is the real win condition.
-
Fallback pressure is valid when the commander is too expensive or repeatedly answered. Continue presenting threats with Loyal Apprentice, Searslicer Goblin, Brazen Borrower, Undermountain Adventurer, Bloodbraid Challenger, Fury, Den Protector, and ordinary creature attacks while holding permission for sweepers or stabilizers. No registered main-deck creature-land plan exists, so do not wait for land-based damage that the decklist cannot provide.
Emergency Lines
-
Behind on life: Spend Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Fury, Unsummon, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Prismari Charm, or blockers to stop the fastest visible clock before pursuing commander setup. Preserve life over marginal card advantage when the opponent can present lethal next turn.
-
Behind on board: Prioritize bounce, removal, and combat trades that reset the opponent's highest-damage attacker or most snowballing permanent. Deploy Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, Fury, or a protected Eshki Dragonclaw only if the resulting blocker or attack swing changes the race.
-
Behind on cards: Use Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Preordain, Brainstorm, Expressive Iteration, Frantic Search, Hunter's Talent, Den Protector, Reclaim, and Prismari Charm to find a stabilizer, not just more velocity. Brainstorm is better with Fabled Passage or Ash Barrens, but cast it earlier if the hand is otherwise stranded.
-
Behind on mana or colors: Search or sequence for green first when ramp is needed, blue when permission or selection is needed, and red when removal or reach is needed. Use Sakura-Tribe Elder, Ash Barrens, Fabled Passage, Growth Spiral, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, and Armored Scrapgorger to repair mana before committing color-intensive lines.
-
Engine removed or commander taxed: Shift to tempo-creature pressure or large finisher conversion instead of forcing repeated commander recasts into the same answer. Protect the next threat that can win by itself, especially Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Brazen Borrower, or Fury.
-
Graveyard or recursion disrupted: Treat Reclaim, Den Protector, Armored Scrapgorger, Soul-Guide Lantern, and Tormod's Crypt as optional tools, not required combo pieces. If the graveyard is blanked, win through hand, battlefield, commander access, and burn reach.
-
Combo or tribal text unavailable: Follow only legal engine output and visible card text from Forge. When Eshki Dragonclaw or newer cards expose no deterministic payoff, pilot the deck as Temur tempo-control with protected threats, permission, removal, and combat math.
Resource Model
-
Life is a tempo resource, not a shield for slow value. Preserve life when visible attackers threaten a short clock, because this deck often wins by stabilizing into Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Fury, Brazen Borrower, or burn reach rather than by absorbing repeated attacks. Spend Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Unsummon, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Prismari Charm, or Fury early when the damage prevented is larger than the card’s later reach value.
-
Hand size is the deck’s flexibility engine. Convert cantrips and filtering from Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Preordain, Brainstorm, Expressive Iteration, Frantic Search, and Prismari Charm into the missing role for the turn: land, color, cheap pressure, permission, protection, or stabilizer. Do not hoard selection when a land drop or answer must be found before the next combat.
-
Mana is both development and protection. Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, and Growth Spiral let the deck jump from cheap interaction into commander or large-threat turns, but overcommitting mana creatures and auras into visible removal can lose tempo. Favor ramp when the hand has expensive follow-up; favor interaction when the opponent already has pressure.
-
Board material should trade only when the exchange changes the race, preserves a key engine, or opens attacks. Small creatures such as Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Searslicer Goblin, Loyal Apprentice, Floodpits Drowner, Deeproot Wayfinder, Ornery Tumblewagg, Spider-Punk, Cunning Coyote, and Brazen Borrower can become pressure, blockers, or protection carriers. Card text check required for newer role assumptions; follow legal actions and visible text at runtime.
-
Graveyard resources are optional leverage, not a required combo core. Reclaim and Den Protector can convert the graveyard into the best visible next card, while Armored Scrapgorger, Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Endurance, and Grafdigger's Cage can deny opposing graveyard plans. Use graveyard hate only when public graveyard contents, matchup context, or legal opponent actions make it relevant; otherwise keep mana and pressure moving.
-
Exile resources matter when the engine exposes castable or temporary-play cards. Expressive Iteration and any other legal exile-permission action should be evaluated by current mana, land drop status, and whether the exiled card must be used now. Do not assume future access unless the rules engine shows it.
-
Lands are the deck’s color base and shuffle tools. Fabled Passage and Ash Barrens can fix colors and improve Brainstorm; Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, Dreamroot Cascade, Sulfur Falls, Cinder Glade, Hinterland Harbor, Rootbound Crag, and Sodden Verdure should be sequenced to maximize untapped colors for the current turn. Card text check required for Sodden Verdure if runtime text is unavailable.
-
Sacrifice fodder is scarce and should be assigned deliberately. Sakura-Tribe Elder can be cashed in for mana, Cankerbloom may trade with artifacts or enchantments when legal, and disposable attackers can trade in combat, but the deck does not have a broad sacrifice engine. Avoid sacrificing a creature that is needed for pressure, blocking, protection, or commander support unless the legal action clearly solves the turn.
-
Information is gained through cantrips, reveal effects, public zones, and opponent timing. Use visible hand reveals, graveyards, exile, mana left open, and prior actions to decide whether to tap out, hold Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Unsubstantiate, Siren Stormtamer, Malevolent Hermit, Lazotep Plating, or Snakeskin Veil. Never infer exact hidden cards without a reveal.
-
Sideboard bullets are singleton precision tools. Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast answer blue pressure or blue interaction, Hydroblast covers red, Abrade and Ancient Grudge fight artifacts, Force of Vigor fights artifact/enchantment density, Veil of Summer protects through black or blue interaction, Endurance and Grafdigger's Cage fight graveyards, and Pithing Needle answers named activated abilities when the threatening permanent or pattern is known.
Mana Guide
-
Keep hands that cast spells on time with at least two functional mana sources or one land plus a credible one-mana accelerator or cantrip. A strong keep usually has access to green for Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, or Cankerbloom; blue for Opt, Consider, Sleight of Hand, Preordain, Brainstorm, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Unsubstantiate, or Brazen Borrower; or red for Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Zurgo Bellstriker, Ghostfire Slice, Atarka's Command, Prismari Charm, or Fury.
-
Mulligan hands that cannot produce an early color used by their cheap cards. A hand with Forest plus green ramp can keep more speculative blue or red cards; a hand with only Island and Mountain needs cheap action and a route to green before it can rely on commander or large-threat development. Do not keep a hand whose first real play is turn three unless the matchup is slow and the hand contains interaction.
-
Sequence green early when ramp is the path to the hand’s strongest line. Utopia Sprawl and Wild Growth are best when attached to a land that will remain available for multiple turns, but do not enchant a land if the legal action would strand required blue or red this turn. Llanowar Elves and Elvish Mystic should usually enter before taplands when they unlock a faster Eshki Dragonclaw or four-mana play.
-
Sequence blue early when the hand is uncertain or reactive. Island, Command Tower, Dreamroot Cascade, Hinterland Harbor, Sulfur Falls, Exotic Orchard, or fetch/fix lines should enable cantrips and permission before committing to a tap-out creature. Hold up Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, or Unsubstantiate when the opponent’s next visible turn is likely to resolve a higher-impact spell than your own routine development.
-
Sequence red early when removal or pressure controls the race. Mountain, Command Tower, Sulfur Falls, Rootbound Crag, Cinder Glade, Exotic Orchard, or other red access should be prioritized when Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Zurgo Bellstriker, Atarka's Command, Prismari Charm, or Fury is needed to remove a blocker, stop a fast attacker, or set up lethal.
-
Treat tapped lands as tempo costs. Dreamroot Cascade, Cinder Glade, Sulfur Falls, Hinterland Harbor, Rootbound Crag, and Sodden Verdure may enter untapped only under their actual rules text; verify through engine output rather than memory. Play a tapped or conditional land early when the turn has no one-mana action; play an untapped basic or Command Tower when interaction or a cantrip must remain available.
-
Use Fabled Passage and Ash Barrens as color repair before using them as value. Fix the missing color for current hand function first, then consider saving a shuffle for Brainstorm. If Brainstorm is already in hand and mana is stable, delay the shuffle until after Brainstorm can put back weak cards; if colors are broken, fix immediately.
-
Do not treat Den Protector as a mana source or land-sequencing fixer. Den Protector is a later recursion/value creature; it should only influence mana planning by reminding Veles to preserve the green access needed to cast it after the deck already has functional Command Tower, basic, fetch, or dual-land colors.
-
Play lands before drawing when the land drop is already obvious and the extra mana changes legal actions this turn. Draw or filter before the land drop when Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Preordain, Brainstorm, Expressive Iteration, Frantic Search, or Growth Spiral can change which land should be played, whether Ash Barrens should be used, or whether a tapland can be tolerated.
-
Preserve exact colors for double-spell turns. Before casting a cantrip, burn spell, or protection spell, check whether the remaining mana still supports Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Prismari Charm, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Spell Pierce, or sideboard blasts. Do not spend the only blue or red source on a low-impact action if visible stack or combat context requires interaction.
Mulligan Guide
-
Strong keeps start with two or more functional mana sources plus a one-mana play. Keep hands like Forest, Island, Utopia Sprawl, Preordain, Lightning Bolt, Counterspell, and any midgame threat because they develop mana, select cards, and still answer a key spell.
-
Strong green keeps accelerate without giving up interaction. Forest plus Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, or Elvish Mystic is a keep when the rest of the hand has blue or red access, a cantrip, or a castable interactive card; prioritize the line that reaches Eshki Dragonclaw or a four-mana play while leaving future colors intact. Card text check required for Eshki Dragonclaw before treating commander deployment as the default payoff.
-
Strong blue keeps stabilize uncertain hands. Island plus Opt, Consider, Sleight of Hand, Preordain, Brainstorm, Daze, Spell Pierce, Memory Lapse, or Counterspell can keep a slower hand if the second land or green source is findable and the opponent is not presenting immediate creature pressure.
-
Medium keeps need one fixable weakness. A hand with Command Tower, Mountain, Sleight of Hand, Growth Spiral, Burst Lightning, Prismari Charm, and Den Protector is acceptable if the cantrip can find green or blue on time; a hand with Forest, Cinder Glade, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Cankerbloom, Snakeskin Veil, Brazen Borrower, and Tyrranax Rex is acceptable when early mana makes the expensive cards reachable.
-
Risky keeps require matchup permission. One-land hands are keepable only with a cantrip chain or green accelerator that is already castable; examples include Island with Opt, Consider, Preordain, Brainstorm, Daze, Spell Pierce, and Lightning Bolt, or Forest with Llanowar Elves, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and cheap follow-up. Ship one-land hands that rely on drawing a specific untapped color without selection.
-
Automatic ships cannot play a meaningful game before turn three. Ship hands with only Mountain plus Counterspell and Memory Lapse, hands with only large cards such as Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, and Fury without mana support, and hands whose only interaction is graveyard hate such as Tormod's Crypt or Soul-Guide Lantern against an unknown fast board.
-
Matchup-dependent keeps lean on the right half of the deck. Against fast creatures, keep Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Unsummon, Snap, Brazen Borrower, Fury, Cunning Coyote, Zurgo Bellstriker, or early blockers with stable mana. Against spell-heavy decks, keep Daze, Spell Pierce, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Malevolent Hermit, Siren Stormtamer, and card selection. Against graveyard decks, Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, and Cankerbloom become real keep incentives only when the matchup or public information supports them.
-
Play/draw changes the permission threshold. On the play, prioritize proactive mana and pressure with Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, or Loyal Apprentice. On the draw, require more cheap interaction or selection because Daze, Spell Pierce, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Unsummon, and Snap must cover the opponent’s first meaningful push.
-
Trap hands look powerful but fail color, timing, or role checks. Do not keep Brainstorm without either enough lands, Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, or other shuffle/fix pressure unless the hand already functions. Do not keep Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Cankerbloom, and Force-like answers in place of mana and board presence. Do not keep only protection such as Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Siren Stormtamer, or Malevolent Hermit without a permanent worth protecting.
Turn Arc
-
Turn 1 prioritizes mana, selection, or immediate interaction. Lead Forest into Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, or Elvish Mystic when acceleration is legal and colors remain workable; lead Island into Preordain, Sleight of Hand, Consider, Opt, or Brainstorm when the hand needs land or color repair; lead Mountain into Zurgo Bellstriker only when pressure matters more than holding Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Daze, or Spell Pierce.
-
Turn 1 deviations protect against visible danger. Use Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Unsummon, Tormod's Crypt, or Soul-Guide Lantern only when the engine shows a target or public graveyard that matters now; otherwise spend the turn improving mana or hand quality. Use Fabled Passage or Ash Barrens early when colors are broken, but preserve the shuffle for Brainstorm when mana is already functional.
-
Turn 2 converts the opener into a role. Cast Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, Cankerbloom, Deeproot Wayfinder, Malevolent Hermit, Siren Stormtamer, Searslicer Goblin, Tam, Mindful First-Year, Studious First-Year, or Hunter's Talent when they advance the current board; hold up Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Spell Pierce, Daze, Unsubstantiate, Snap, or removal when the opponent’s next legal play is likely to matter more than your development. Card text check required for newer role cards if runtime text is not exposed.
-
Turn 3 chooses between commander setup, pressure, and shields. Deploy Eshki Dragonclaw only when the legal action is available and the board, mana, and protection make the commander worth exposing; otherwise cast Expressive Iteration, Prismari Charm, Frantic Search, Brazen Borrower, Den Protector, Bloodbraid Challenger, Temur Battlecrier, Iroh's Demonstration, or interaction while preserving the color needed for a response.
-
Turns 4-5 are the commitment window. Tap out for Undermountain Adventurer, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Hauntwoods Shrieker, Pinnacle Monk, or a commander-centered line only when visible pressure, known interaction, and available protection justify it. If behind, use Fury, Ghostfire Slice, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Unsummon, Gruul Charm, Atarka's Command, or Brazen Borrower to regain tempo before adding expensive threats.
-
Late game rewards patience with mana and stack discipline. Use cantrips before land drops when they can change sequencing, hold Counterspell or Memory Lapse for spells that beat your board, and spend Reclaim or Den Protector only on a card whose legal recast or recursion line is visible and timely. Close games by combining protected threats, burn, combat pressure, and commander access rather than firing low-impact spells into open mana.
Card Roles
-
Eshki Dragonclaw is the command-zone identity card, but Card text check required before treating any commander-specific trigger, combat line, or combo loop as deterministic. Cast Eshki Dragonclaw only when legal mana, visible board pressure, and available protection make the commander more valuable than holding interaction.
-
Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, and Growth Spiral are the early acceleration package. Prioritize them when they fix colors or move the deck from two mana to four mana; hold Armored Scrapgorger longer only when graveyard interaction is visibly important or the extra mana is not needed.
-
Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, Dreamroot Cascade, Hinterland Harbor, Sulfur Falls, Rootbound Crag, Cinder Glade, Sodden Verdure, Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Island, Forest, and Mountain are the color plan. Fetch or cycle Ash Barrens and crack Fabled Passage early when a keep lacks a color, but preserve shuffle value with Brainstorm when the hand already casts its next two turns.
-
Preordain, Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Brainstorm, Expressive Iteration, Frantic Search, and Prismari Charm are the selection and velocity core. Use cheap cantrips to hit land drops, repair colors, or find role-specific interaction; avoid Brainstorm without shuffle or a clear need to hide/convert dead cards. Use Expressive Iteration when a land drop or cheap spell can be played from exile this turn.
-
Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, Unsummon, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Gruul Charm, and Prismari Charm are tempo and removal tools. Spend them early against creatures that will snowball, but hold flexible bounce or burn when the opponent has a larger visible threat, stack object, or combat step where tempo is worth more than damage.
-
Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Malevolent Hermit, Siren Stormtamer, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Pawpatch Formation, and Reclaim protect the plan. Use hard permission for spells that beat your board or prevent your next commitment; use soft permission while mana is constrained; save protection for Eshki Dragonclaw, a finisher, or a permanent whose survival changes the race. Card text check required for Pawpatch Formation mode selection.

Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Loyal Apprentice, Searslicer Goblin, Cunning Coyote, Spider-Punk, Bloodbraid Challenger, Temur Battlecrier, Tam, Mindful First-Year, Studious First-Year, Floodpits Drowner, Ornery Tumblewagg, and Deeproot Wayfinder are the early-to-midgame board package. Deploy these when pressure, blocking, or permanent count matters; hold them when the better line is keeping mana open for interaction. Card text check required for Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Searslicer Goblin, Cunning Coyote, Spider-Punk, Bloodbraid Challenger, Tam, Mindful First-Year, Studious First-Year, Floodpits Drowner, and Ornery Tumblewagg before assuming trigger timing or combat math.
-
Cankerbloom, Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, and Armored Scrapgorger are maindeck utility hate. Do not spend them just because legal; use artifact, enchantment, or graveyard interaction when the visible object is enabling a current engine, protecting a combo, or threatening lethal/lock pressure. Soul-Guide Lantern can replace itself when graveyard pressure is absent and the deck needs velocity.
-
Lavaspur Boots, Hunter's Talent, Hauntwoods Shrieker, Pinnacle Monk, Den Protector, Undermountain Adventurer, Tyrranax Rex, and Balustrade Wurm are commitment or payoff cards. Cast them when the deck can gain immediate pressure, resilience, or card advantage; delay them when open mana, visible removal, or an unfavorable board makes tapping out likely to lose tempo. Card text check required for Lavaspur Boots, Hunter's Talent, Hauntwoods Shrieker, Pinnacle Monk, Undermountain Adventurer, and Balustrade Wurm before choosing exact upgrade, target, or adventure-style lines.
-
Atarka's Command, Iroh's Demonstration, Banishing Betrayal, It'll Quench Ya!, and Ghostfire Slice are conditional swing cards. Use them only after checking legal modes, visible targets, and combat math; do not assume reach, pump, prevention, damage, or counter functionality without runtime text. Card text check required for Iroh's Demonstration, Banishing Betrayal, It'll Quench Ya!, and Ghostfire Slice.
-
Reclaim and Den Protector are recovery tools, not automatic value plays. Aim them at Counterspell, Fury, Expressive Iteration, a needed removal spell, a destroyed payoff, or a land/fixer only when the recast window is realistic and the recovered card matters before the opponent’s next decisive turn.
-
Frantic Search, Snap, and Daze are tempo-positive only when the untap or alternate-cost pattern preserves a real follow-up. Use them to keep shields up, force through a commander or payoff turn, or answer a threat while advancing mana; avoid spending them into empty tempo when the hand lacks payoff.
-
Tyrranax Rex and Balustrade Wurm are top-end closers. Commit them when they stabilize combat or end the game through visible defenses; avoid keeping opening hands where they are stranded without acceleration, selection, or enough lands.
-
Fury is both emergency stabilization and a pressure card. Use it to clear multiple small creatures or remove a key attacker when the board demands it; avoid pitching a high-value red card unless survival, a decisive attack, or protecting the commander line justifies the card disadvantage.
-
Brazen Borrower and Unsubstantiate answer problem permanents or stack timing without permanently solving them. Use them to break a lethal attack, remove a blocker for a winning swing, reset a protected permanent, or buy a turn for Eshki Dragonclaw; do not bounce low-impact targets when hard removal or development is available.
-
Siren Stormtamer, Malevolent Hermit, Lazotep Plating, and Snakeskin Veil define protected-commitment turns. Lead with a threat only when one of these can answer the opponent’s visible interaction pattern, and remember that protection may not cover every effect type; check legal targets and text before assuming it stops sacrifice, sweeper, edict, or non-targeted effects.
Card Hover Notes
Eshki Dragonclaw
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, commander and core pressure engine.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine payoff; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Eshki turns Temur double-spell turns into cards and commander-damage pressure: if you have cast both a creature spell and a noncreature spell before beginning of combat, Eshki draws a card and gets two +1/+1 counters.
- Timing: Cast when you can either protect it or immediately set up a creature-plus-noncreature turn; delaying is correct when holding Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Spell Pierce, Daze, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Siren Stormtamer, or Malevolent Hermit beats tapping out.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes four mana in Temur colors plus future commander tax; outputs vigilance/trample pressure, ward {1}, card draw, and permanent +1/+1 counters when the trigger condition is met.
- Partners / packages: Cheap creature half for trigger includes Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Zurgo Bellstriker, Siren Stormtamer, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Cunning Coyote, Loyal Apprentice, and Searslicer Goblin; cheap noncreature half includes Opt, Consider, Brainstorm, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Snakeskin Veil, Spell Pierce, and Sleight of Hand.
- Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Tyrranax Rex and Balustrade Wurm as large protected finishers, and Hunter's Talent as a creature-size payoff.
- Failure modes: Casting into open removal without protection can convert commander tax into a tempo loss; attacking without first checking the creature-plus-noncreature trigger may miss the card-and-counter snowball.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, commit with protection or permission visible; against aggro, cast only if the 4/4 vigilance body stabilizes or a cheaper interaction line does not prevent more damage.
Island
- Deck role: Main, 9 copies, basic mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Island supplies blue for Opt, Consider, Brainstorm, Sleight of Hand, Preordain, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Spell Pierce, Daze, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Banishing Betrayal, Lazotep Plating, Frantic Search, and Eshki Dragonclaw.
- Timing: Prioritize early Island when the hand needs cantrips or stack interaction; keep one Island available when Daze's alternate cost or Counterspell's {U}{U} matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for {U}; can be returned to hand for Daze instead of paying Daze's mana cost.
- Partners / packages: Fetchable by Fabled Passage, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Studious First-Year // Rampant Growth, and Ash Barrens; enables Sulfur Falls and Hinterland Harbor to enter untapped.
- Role peers: Dreamroot Cascade, Command Tower, Sodden Verdure, Sulfur Falls, Exotic Orchard, and Hinterland Harbor also produce blue, with different entry conditions.
- Failure modes: Fetching Island too early can strand green ramp or red removal; returning the only Island to Daze can break Counterspell or Eshki Dragonclaw sequencing.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against spell-heavy decks, Island access is more valuable than early Mountain pressure because blue interaction controls the stack.
Forest
- Deck role: Main, 9 copies, basic mana resource and enchantment-ramp base.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Forest casts Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, Cankerbloom, Hunter's Talent, Snakeskin Veil, and the green part of Eshki Dragonclaw.
- Timing: Fetch or play Forest early when Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, or a one-mana mana creature accelerates a turn-three Eshki or four-mana play.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for {G}; is the legal land subtype for Utopia Sprawl's “Enchant Forest.”
- Partners / packages: Fetchable by Fabled Passage, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Studious First-Year // Rampant Growth, and Ash Barrens; enables Cinder Glade, Hinterland Harbor, and Rootbound Crag entry conditions.
- Role peers: Dreamroot Cascade, Command Tower, Sodden Verdure, Cinder Glade, Exotic Orchard, Hinterland Harbor, Rootbound Crag, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Armored Scrapgorger, and Undermountain Adventurer also supply green.
- Failure modes: Overvaluing Forest can leave Counterspell or red interaction stranded; enchanting a Forest that must stay untapped for Snakeskin Veil can lose a protection window.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against mana denial or fast pressure, Forest plus acceleration is the best path to stabilizing bodies and interaction density.
Mountain
- Deck role: Main, 9 copies, basic mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Mountain casts Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Searslicer Goblin, Cunning Coyote, Ghostfire Slice, Prismari Charm, Atarka's Command, Gruul Charm, Fury, and Eshki Dragonclaw.
- Timing: Prioritize Mountain when immediate damage interaction or early pressure controls the race; otherwise avoid fetching it before blue and green are functional.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for {R}; Mystic Peak also taps for {R}, but Mountain is fetchable by basic-land searches.
- Partners / packages: Fetchable by Fabled Passage, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Studious First-Year // Rampant Growth, and Ash Barrens; enables Sulfur Falls and Rootbound Crag entry conditions.
- Role peers: Command Tower, Sulfur Falls, Cinder Glade, Exotic Orchard, Rootbound Crag, and Mystic Peak also produce red.
- Failure modes: Keeping Mountain-heavy hands with Counterspell, Growth Spiral, or Utopia Sprawl can fail to function; spending the only red source before Burst Lightning or Lightning Bolt changes combat can cost a race.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against red aggro or creature decks, Mountain access turns cheap burn into life-total preservation instead of late reach.
Dreamroot Cascade
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, dual mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Produces {G} or {U} for the deck's ramp, cantrips, permission, and Eshki Dragonclaw while improving hands that need green and blue before red.
- Timing: Play early only if entering tapped does not cost a one-mana spell; after two other lands, it enters untapped and is excellent for holding blue interaction while developing green.
- Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped unless you control two or more other lands; taps for {G} or {U}.
- Partners / packages: Supports Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Growth Spiral, Opt, Consider, Spell Pierce, Counterspell, and Memory Lapse.
- Role peers: Sodden Verdure and Hinterland Harbor are closest {G}/{U} lands; Command Tower and Exotic Orchard can cover both colors with broader conditions.
- Failure modes: Playing it tapped on turn one can strand Opt, Consider, Preordain, Spell Pierce, or Llanowar Elves.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Stronger in slower games where tapped timing is acceptable; weaker against fast starts requiring immediate interaction.
Fabled Passage
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, land-search utility and color fixer.
- Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Finds Island, Forest, or Mountain to repair the exact missing color, and later untaps the searched basic if you control four or more lands.
- Timing: Crack immediately when a color is missing; save when mana already works and Brainstorm needs a shuffle after putting back weak cards.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps and sacrifices itself; searches a basic land card, puts it onto the battlefield tapped, shuffles, then untaps that land if you control four or more lands.
- Mode map: Search target map is Island for blue cantrips/Counterspell/Daze, Forest for Utopia Sprawl/Wild Growth/green ramp/Snakeskin Veil, and Mountain for Lightning Bolt/Burst Lightning/red pressure.
- Partners / packages: Pairs with Brainstorm to clear put-back cards; supports Eshki Dragonclaw color requirements and Delirium setup for Balustrade Wurm by putting a land in the graveyard.
- Role peers: Ash Barrens fixes basics to hand; Sakura-Tribe Elder and Studious First-Year // Rampant Growth put basics onto the battlefield tapped.
- Failure modes: Saving it for Brainstorm while missing a color can make the hand nonfunctional; fetching the wrong basic can strand double-blue Counterspell or red removal.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against tempo, prioritize untapped-color planning over shuffle value.
Command Tower
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, premium three-color mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Produces any color in Eshki Dragonclaw's Temur color identity, making it the cleanest land for hands with mixed green ramp, blue interaction, and red removal.
- Timing: Lead on Command Tower when it enables the most possible turn-one or turn-two lines; preserve it untapped when holding one-mana interaction or protection.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for one mana of any color in your commander's color identity: {G}, {U}, or {R}.
- Partners / packages: Casts Eshki Dragonclaw alongside other lands and supports exact-color pairs for Growth Spiral, Prismari Charm, Atarka's Command, Gruul Charm, Counterspell, and Snakeskin Veil.
- Role peers: Exotic Orchard can mimic colors depending on opponent lands; Dreamroot Cascade, Sulfur Falls, Cinder Glade, Hinterland Harbor, Rootbound Crag, and Sodden Verdure cover two-color pairs.
- Failure modes: Tapping it for a low-impact cantrip can strand Lightning Bolt, Spell Pierce, or Snakeskin Veil in the same turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against unknown opponents, Command Tower keeps role choice open longer than a basic-heavy sequence.
Sodden Verdure
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, typed dual mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Supplies {G} or {U} and counts as both Forest and Island for land-entry checks and Utopia Sprawl's legal “Enchant Forest” targeting.
- Timing: Strong after two basic lands because it can enter untapped; early tapped entry is acceptable only when no one-mana action is being forfeited.
- Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped unless you control two or more basic lands; taps for {G} or {U}.
- Partners / packages: Enables Utopia Sprawl, Hinterland Harbor, Sulfur Falls, and Daze-adjacent Island planning; casts Growth Spiral, Counterspell with another blue, and green ramp.
- Role peers: Dreamroot Cascade and Hinterland Harbor are closest {G}/{U} lands; Forest and Island are safer untapped basics.
- Failure modes: Treating it as untapped before two basics can miss Spell Pierce, Opt, Consider, or Llanowar Elves timing.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in games where basic-heavy development matters; worse when an immediate blue or green spell is necessary.
Sulfur Falls
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, blue-red mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Supplies {U} or {R} for the deck's permission-plus-burn turns, especially Counterspell/Memory Lapse plus Lightning Bolt/Burst Lightning sequencing.
- Timing: Play after Island, Mountain, Sodden Verdure, or Cinder Glade when possible so it enters untapped; avoid relying on it as the first land for one-mana plays.
- Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped unless you control an Island or a Mountain; taps for {U} or {R}.
- Partners / packages: Supports Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Opt, Consider, Spell Pierce, Prismari Charm, Daze, Memory Lapse, and Frantic Search.
- Role peers: Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, and Mystic Peak cover red or blue differently; Dreamroot Cascade and Rootbound Crag cover only one of these colors.
- Failure modes: A tapped Sulfur Falls can lose the window for Spell Pierce or Lightning Bolt on turn one.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against tempo and control where blue-red open mana threatens both stack and board interaction.
Cinder Glade
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, typed green-red mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Supplies {R} or {G} for ramp, red removal, and Atarka's Command/Gruul Charm while counting as Mountain and Forest.
- Timing: Strong after two basic lands; early tapped entry is acceptable when no one-mana green or red spell is needed.
- Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped unless you control two or more basic lands; taps for {R} or {G}.
- Partners / packages: Enables Utopia Sprawl as a Forest, Rootbound Crag and Sulfur Falls entry checks by subtype, and casts Atarka's Command, Gruul Charm, Cankerbloom, Lightning Bolt, and Burst Lightning.
- Role peers: Rootbound Crag and Command Tower are closest green-red lands; Forest and Mountain are safer basics.
- Failure modes: Treating it as untapped too early can strand Llanowar Elves, Utopia Sprawl, Lightning Bolt, or Spell Pierce splash planning.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in midgame creature races where green bodies and red damage must both stay available.
Exotic Orchard
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, opponent-dependent fixing land.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Produces colors only if an opponent's land could produce them, so it can be perfect fixing in multicolor mirrors and unreliable against narrow-color openings.
- Timing: Sequence after seeing opponent mana when possible; do not count on missing colors unless the opponent's lands visibly produce them.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for one mana of any color that a land an opponent controls could produce.
- Partners / packages: Helps cast Eshki Dragonclaw, Prismari Charm, Atarka's Command, Growth Spiral, Counterspell, and Lightning Bolt when opponent lands support the required colors.
- Role peers: Command Tower is reliable Temur fixing; other duals have known two-color outputs and entry conditions.
- Failure modes: Assuming Exotic Orchard produces {G}, {U}, or {R} without visible opponent land support can create illegal or stranded lines.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against multicolor commanders; weaker against mono-color opponents that do not expose the needed color.
Hinterland Harbor
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, green-blue mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Supplies {G} or {U} for ramp-plus-permission sequencing, especially hands that want green development while leaving blue interaction.
- Timing: Play after Forest, Island, Sodden Verdure, Cinder Glade, or other qualifying subtype when possible; avoid as turn-one land if one-mana action matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped unless you control a Forest or an Island; taps for {G} or {U}.
- Partners / packages: Casts Growth Spiral, Utopia Sprawl follow-ups, Counterspell with another blue, Memory Lapse, Armored Scrapgorger, and Snakeskin Veil.
- Role peers: Dreamroot Cascade and Sodden Verdure are closest {G}/{U} lands; Command Tower is broader.
- Failure modes: Tapped entry can cost turn-one Preordain, Opt, Consider, Brainstorm, Utopia Sprawl, or Llanowar Elves.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against control and combo because it enables development while keeping blue mana credible.
Lightning Bolt
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, core cheap interaction and reach.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 3 damage to any target, letting this deck kill early creatures, pressure planeswalkers, finish opponents, or clear a blocker for Eshki Dragonclaw and other attackers.
- Timing: Use early when it prevents more than 3 damage or stops a snowball permanent; save when opponent life plus combat makes Bolt a lethal or two-turn-clock card.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs 3 damage to any target.
- Partners / packages: Works with Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, Prismari Charm, and Atarka's Command to convert tempo into lethal.
- Role peers: Burst Lightning is cheaper but starts at 2 damage unless kicked; Ghostfire Slice deals 4; Fury divides 4 among creatures and/or planeswalkers.
- Failure modes: Firing at face while a creature will deal repeated damage or block Eshki can lose the race; holding it too long against aggro can waste life.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, point at opponent or planeswalker when it shortens the clock; against aggro, prioritize haste attackers and must-kill engines.
Utopia Sprawl
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, core enchant-land acceleration and fixing.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a Forest and adds one chosen color whenever that Forest is tapped for mana, accelerating Eshki Dragonclaw and enabling double-spell turns.
- Timing: Best on turn one with a Forest that will be used repeatedly; choose the color that unlocks the next two turns, not the color that looks abstractly scarce.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G} and a legal Forest target; outputs an extra chosen-color mana each time the enchanted Forest is tapped for mana.
- Mode map: As this Aura enters, choose {G}, {U}, or {R} based on current hand: {U} for Counterspell/Memory Lapse/cantrips, {R} for Lightning Bolt/Burst Lightning/Prismari Charm, {G} for green-heavy ramp or Tyrranax Rex/Balustrade Wurm.
- Partners / packages: Legal Forest targets include Forest, Sodden Verdure, and Cinder Glade; pairs with Frantic Search and Snap because untapping enchanted lands can create extra mana.
- Role peers: Wild Growth also enchants a land and adds {G}; Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, and Undermountain Adventurer also accelerate.
- Failure modes: Enchanting a land that enters tapped or must remain untapped can cost interaction; choosing the wrong color can strand Eshki Dragonclaw or Counterspell.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against removal-light decks, it is the cleanest acceleration; against land-destruction or bounce pressure, avoid overloading one land if alternate development is available.
Kellan, Planar Trailblazer
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, early pressure and scaling card-advantage threat.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Starts as a one-mana 2/1, then can spend red mana over later turns to become a Detective that exiles playable top cards on combat damage, and then a 3/2 Rogue with double strike.
- Timing: Cast early when pressure is valuable; activate {1}{R} before attacks only when you expect Kellan to connect or force a trade, and activate {2}{R} when double strike meaningfully changes damage or exile-card access.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R} to cast, then {1}{R} and {2}{R} for staged upgrades; outputs combat damage pressure and temporary card access after the first upgrade connects.
- Mode map: Scout form is cheap pressure; Detective form rewards combat damage with exile-and-play access this turn; Rogue form adds double strike after Kellan is already a Detective.
- Partners / packages: Lavaspur Boots, Cunning Coyote, Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, Tam, Mindful First-Year, Unsummon, Snap, and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft help Kellan attack safely.
- Role peers: Zurgo Bellstriker is the closest one-mana red attacker; Deeproot Wayfinder and Loyal Apprentice are closest attack-based value threats.
- Failure modes: Spending red mana on upgrades while holding Lightning Bolt or Burst Lightning for survival can lose tempo; upgrading into a board where Kellan cannot connect wastes mana.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against slow opponents without blockers; weaker against creature decks where a 2/1 trades down or cannot attack.
Pinnacle Monk
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, MDFC red land or late recursion creature.
- Role type: modal utility; recursion; mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Mystic Peak is a red land when mana is the bottleneck; Pinnacle Monk is a five-mana prowess creature that returns target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard to your hand.
- Timing: Play as Mystic Peak early when red access or land count matters; save as Pinnacle Monk when you can recur Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Frantic Search, Snap, Prismari Charm, Atarka's Command, or Expressive Iteration and still affect the game.
- Inputs / outputs: Land side may cost 3 life to enter untapped and taps for {R}; creature side consumes {3}{R}{R}, produces a 2/2 prowess body and one instant-or-sorcery return.
- Mode map: Normal cast Pinnacle Monk returns target instant or sorcery card from graveyard to hand and adds prowess pressure; Mystic Peak is the land face, enters tapped unless you pay 3 life, and then taps for {R}. Use land side for function, creature side for late resource conversion.
- Partners / packages: Recursion targets include Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Snap, Frantic Search, Expressive Iteration, Prismari Charm, Atarka's Command, and Ghostfire Slice.
- Role peers: Den Protector and Reclaim recover broader card types; Mystic Peak overlaps with Mountain as red mana.
- Failure modes: Holding it as a five-mana creature while missing land drops can strand the hand; paying 3 life against burn may be worse than accepting tapped entry.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, creature side rebuying permission or burn is valuable; against aggro, land side often matters more than slow recursion.
Zurgo Bellstriker
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, one-mana pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Provides early red damage and can dash later for haste pressure without staying exposed through the opponent's sorcery-speed turn.
- Timing: Cast on turn one against slow decks; use dash {1}{R} when haste damage matters or when you want Zurgo back in hand at end step.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R} normally or {1}{R} for dash; outputs a 2/2 attacker that cannot block creatures with power 2 or greater.
- Mode map: Normal cast builds board presence; dash gives haste and returns Zurgo to owner's hand at the beginning of the next end step, useful into sorcery-speed sweepers or for immediate damage.
- Partners / packages: Works with Atarka's Command, Gruul Charm, Lavaspur Boots, Cunning Coyote, Unsummon, Snap, and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft to push early attacks.
- Role peers: Kellan, Planar Trailblazer is the closest one-mana red attacker; Cunning Coyote and Searslicer Goblin are two-mana red pressure.
- Failure modes: Cannot block power 2 or greater creatures, so treating Zurgo as defense against aggro is a mistake.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against control and combo as early clock; cuttable against red aggro or artifact-engine matchups where body size and blocking text are poor.
Frantic Search
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, instant-speed velocity and mana-tempo tool.
- Role type: card selection; discard outlet; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Draws two, discards two, then untaps up to three lands, letting this deck filter toward interaction while potentially keeping mana open for permission or protection.
- Timing: Cast when the discard improves the hand and untapping lands enables another meaningful action; avoid using it merely to churn when shields must stay up.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{U}; draws two, discards two, and untaps up to three lands, with extra upside when untapping lands enchanted by Utopia Sprawl or Wild Growth.
- Partners / packages: Discard candidates include excess lands after colors are stable, stranded Tyrranax Rex or Balustrade Wurm under pressure, dead Tormod's Crypt or Soul-Guide Lantern against non-graveyard decks, and recursion targets for Reclaim, Den Protector, Pinnacle Monk, or Balustrade Wurm delirium.
- Role peers: Prismari Charm can surveil 2 then draw; Brainstorm, Preordain, Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, and Expressive Iteration are other selection tools.
- Failure modes: Discarding the only answer or only land source for a required color can lose immediately; untapping lands does not help if those lands cannot produce the colors needed.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in control games to sculpt with mana up; risky against aggro if spending three mana does not answer the board.
Snap
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, tempo bounce and mana-positive interaction.
- Role type: interaction-removal; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Returns target creature to its owner's hand and untaps up to two lands, creating tempo while preserving mana for Eshki, protection, or another interaction spell.
- Timing: Best during combat to remove a blocker or attacker, or after the opponent invests mana/attachments; use earlier only when preventing a trigger or lethal pressure matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs target creature bounce and untaps up to two lands, with Utopia Sprawl or Wild Growth making untaps more valuable.
- Partners / packages: Combines with Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, and Prismari Charm to manage blockers and attackers.
- Role peers: Unsummon is cheaper but untaps no lands; Unsubstantiate can also hit a spell; Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft hits opposing nonland permanents.
- Failure modes: Bouncing a cheap creature with a strong enters ability can help the opponent; casting before attacks may let them replay or change blocks.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against expensive threats, tokens, equipped creatures, and tempo mirrors where untapping lands keeps Spell Pierce or Counterspell available.
Tormod's Crypt
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, zero-mana graveyard hate role player.
- Role type: hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Threatens to exile target player's entire graveyard without mana investment, protecting tempo while attacking recursion, flashback, delve, escape, reanimation, or graveyard-combo setups.
- Timing: Deploy when mana would otherwise be unused or graveyard dependence is public; activate when the opponent commits to using the graveyard or when waiting loses the window.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs {0}; taps and sacrifices itself to exile target player's graveyard.
- Partners / packages: Layers with Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, Endurance, and Grafdigger's Cage against graveyard decks; can fuel Balustrade Wurm delirium only by becoming an artifact in graveyard after sacrifice, but that is secondary to hate timing.
- Role peers: Soul-Guide Lantern can exile one card on entry or each opponent's graveyard later; Endurance shuffles a graveyard into library; Grafdigger's Cage prevents specific graveyard/library access.
- Failure modes: Firing it at a merely full graveyard before the opponent commits can let them rebuild; targeting yourself without a clear reason usually gives up a hate piece.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High priority versus visible reanimation, escape, flashback, delve, threshold, or graveyard loops; low priority against fair creature decks with no graveyard text.
Hauntwoods Shrieker
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, attack engine and face-down material maker.
- Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Attacking manifests dread, giving the deck a 2/2 face-down creature while selecting one of the top two cards for battlefield and one for graveyard.
- Timing: Cast when you can attack safely or when the graveyard/battlefield split helps future pressure; wait if a 3/3 for {1}{G}{G} cannot survive or attack.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{G}{G}; outputs a 3/3 attacker, repeated manifest dread on attacks, graveyard filling, and optional {1}{G} face-down reveal/turn-up support.
- Mode map: Attack trigger looks at top two cards, puts one face down as a 2/2 and the other into graveyard; activated ability reveals target face-down permanent and may turn it face up if it is a creature card.
- Partners / packages: Face-down creatures can help saddle Ornery Tumblewagg, trigger Eshki as creature material on later turns if cast normally instead, and feed Balustrade Wurm delirium through graveyard card types.
- Role peers: Deeproot Wayfinder also fills graveyard while attacking; Searslicer Goblin and Loyal Apprentice also create combat-linked material.
- Failure modes: Manifesting a key instant or sorcery face down can delay access; attacking into profitable blocks just to trigger manifest dread can waste the engine.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against slow midrange; weaker when opponent can kill or block a 3/3 before it attacks.
Ghostfire Slice
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, efficient damage interaction and reach.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 4 damage to any target, and costs {2} less if an opponent controls a multicolored permanent; devoid makes the spell colorless, not red, after it is cast.
- Timing: Hold for a 4-toughness creature, planeswalker, lethal opponent damage, or an efficient one-mana swing when the opponent has a multicolored permanent.
- Inputs / outputs: Normally consumes {2}{R}; may cost {R} if an opponent controls a multicolored permanent; outputs 4 damage to any target.
- Partners / packages: Pairs with Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Prismari Charm, Fury, Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, and Atarka's Command for removal-plus-reach math.
- Role peers: Lightning Bolt deals 3 for {R}; Burst Lightning deals 2 or 4 if kicked; Fury divides 4 among creatures and/or planeswalkers.
- Failure modes: Devoid means it is not a red card to exile for Fury; spending it at face before a 4-toughness threat appears can lose board control.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against multicolored commanders or permanents because cost reduction turns it into premium tempo.
Tam, Mindful First-Year
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, creature-protection support and color-enabler body.
- Role type: protection/evasion; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Gives each other creature you control hexproof from each of its colors, then can tap to make target creature you control all colors until end of turn so that creature gains broader color-based hexproof from Tam's static ability.
- Timing: Cast before committing Eshki Dragonclaw or other important creatures when color-targeted removal is likely; activate before the opponent's likely removal window only if losing Tam's tap as blocker/attacker is acceptable.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{G/U}; outputs a 2/2 body, color-based hexproof for other creatures, and a tap ability that changes one of your creatures to all colors until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Protects Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Loyal Apprentice, Deeproot Wayfinder, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, and Cunning Coyote from opposing targeted spells or abilities sharing the relevant colors.
- Role peers: Snakeskin Veil grants full hexproof to one creature for a turn; Lazotep Plating grants you and permanents hexproof for a turn; Siren Stormtamer counters a targeting spell or ability.
- Failure modes: Tam does not protect itself with its static ability because it says each other creature; colorless effects and non-targeted sweepers/edicts are not stopped.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against color-based spot removal; weaker against sweepers, sacrifice effects, and colorless removal.
Floodpits Drowner
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, flash tempo creature and stun-counter utility.
- Role type: interaction-removal; threat/clock; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Flashes in to tap an opposing creature and put a stun counter on it, then can later shuffle itself and that stunned creature into libraries.
- Timing: Use at end step or combat to blank an attacker/blocker; activate {1}{U}, {T} only when removing the stunned creature is worth losing Floodpits Drowner.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs a 2/1 vigilance body, a temporary tap/stun effect, and a later shuffle-removal line for itself plus target creature with a stun counter.
- Mode map: Flash creature mode is tempo and board presence; activated ability shuffles Floodpits Drowner and target creature with a stun counter on it into owners' libraries.
- Partners / packages: Works with Unsummon, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, Lightning Bolt, and Burst Lightning to manipulate combat.
- Role peers: Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft and Unsubstantiate also answer nonland permanent/creature temporarily; Unsummon and Snap are cheaper pure bounce.
- Failure modes: Activating after the stun counter is gone may be illegal; shuffling your own creature away can cost pressure if the opposing creature was not central.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against single large attackers and commanders; less effective against go-wide boards where one tap/stun does not change lethal math.
Sleight of Hand
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, cheap sorcery-speed card selection.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Looks at the top two cards, puts one into hand and the other on bottom, helping find land, missing color, cheap interaction, or a creature/noncreature half for Eshki.
- Timing: Cast before land drop when the choice can change which land to play; hold if leaving up Spell Pierce, Opt, Consider, or Lightning Bolt is more important this turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs one selected card to hand and one unwanted card to bottom.
- Partners / packages: Digs for Command Tower, Forest, Island, Mountain, Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Counterspell, Lightning Bolt, Snakeskin Veil, and Eshki Dragonclaw.
- Role peers: Preordain sees two with scry 2 then draw; Opt and Consider are instant-speed one-card selection; Brainstorm sees three but needs shuffle discipline.
- Failure modes: Sorcery speed can tap blue before an opponent's important stack window; taking a powerful off-curve card over required mana can strand the hand.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against aggro, prioritize land and removal; against control/combo, prioritize permission and protected threat setup.
Reclaim
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, instant-speed topdeck recursion.
- Role type: recursion; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Puts target card from your graveyard on top of your library, turning the next draw into the exact answer, threat, land, or protection spell needed.
- Timing: Best on opponent end step before your draw, or in response to graveyard exile when the target card matters more than immediate hand access.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; consumes the next draw step unless paired with instant draw; outputs a chosen graveyard card on top of library.
- Partners / packages: High-priority targets include Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Fury, Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, and Fabled Passage if mana is failing.
- Role peers: Den Protector returns target card to hand when turned face up; Pinnacle Monk returns an instant or sorcery to hand.
- Failure modes: Reclaiming a card that cannot be cast before the opponent's decisive turn wastes the draw; putting a card on top before an opponent shuffle/mill effect can lose it.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, rebuy permission or a finisher; against aggro, rebuy removal or stabilizing threat.
Studious First-Year
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, prepared creature or Rampant Growth access.
- Role type: modal utility; mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Can be a one-mana 1/1 that enters prepared, or use its prepared Rampant Growth copy to search Island, Forest, or Mountain onto the battlefield tapped.
- Timing: Use the Rampant Growth aspect early when colors or land count matter; leave as creature material when Eshki needs a creature spell or combat/saddle material matters more than ramp.
- Inputs / outputs: Creature side consumes {G} and outputs a prepared 1/1; Rampant Growth copy consumes {1}{G} through prepared access and searches a basic land card onto battlefield tapped.
- Mode map: Studious First-Year is cheap creature board presence; Rampant Growth searches Island, Forest, or Mountain, puts it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffles.
- Partners / packages: Finds Island for Counterspell/cantrips, Forest for green ramp/Snakeskin Veil, Mountain for Lightning Bolt/Burst Lightning; creature body can help Ornery Tumblewagg saddle and Eshki trigger setup.
- Role peers: Sakura-Tribe Elder and Fabled Passage also put basics onto the battlefield; Ash Barrens puts a basic into hand.
- Failure modes: Spending the prepared spell too late can miss the ramp window; treating the 1/1 as pressure when mana is broken is usually wrong.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in color-stressed hands; weak as a combat card against decks with early blockers or sweepers.
Opt
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, instant-speed cantrip.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Scry 1 then draw a card, letting the deck hold up interaction and still improve hand quality if no response is needed.
- Timing: Cast on opponent end step when holding mana for Spell Pierce, Daze, Lightning Bolt, Unsummon, or Snakeskin Veil; cast main phase before land drop only if the draw can change land sequencing.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs scry 1 and one card drawn.
- Partners / packages: Finds lands, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Eshki Dragonclaw, Snakeskin Veil, or missing creature/noncreature halves for Eshki.
- Role peers: Consider surveils instead of scrying; Preordain and Sleight of Hand are stronger sorcery-speed selection; Brainstorm sees more cards.
- Failure modes: Bottoming a card needed for a known matchup because it is not generally powerful can lose role discipline.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against unknown opponents, Opt preserves information and mana better than main-phase sorcery selection.
Consider
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, instant-speed surveil cantrip.
- Role type: card selection; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Surveil 1 then draw, improving draws while placing unneeded cards or recursion targets into the graveyard for Den Protector, Reclaim, Pinnacle Monk, Bloodbraid Challenger escape, and Balustrade Wurm delirium.
- Timing: Prefer end step if interaction might be needed; main-phase only when the draw affects land drop or immediate double-spell planning.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs surveil 1 and one card drawn, with possible graveyard card type added.
- Partners / packages: Graveyard partners are Reclaim, Den Protector, Pinnacle Monk, Bloodbraid Challenger, and Balustrade Wurm; selection targets include land, Lightning Bolt, Counterspell, and Snakeskin Veil.
- Role peers: Opt scries instead of filling graveyard; Preordain sees more cards at sorcery speed; Prismari Charm surveils 2 then draws.
- Failure modes: Milling a card you cannot recover and need soon is a real cost; graveyard filling into opposing hate may expose Bloodbraid Challenger or Balustrade Wurm plans.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in attrition games; against graveyard hate, treat surveil-to-graveyard as lower value.
Hunter's Talent
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, fight-style entry interaction and scaling Class engine.
- Role type: engine piece; interaction-removal; engine payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Enters with your creature dealing damage equal to its power to a creature you don't control, then later turns attacks into trample pressure and end-step card draw if you control a power-4-or-greater creature.
- Timing: Cast when your creature survives or trades profitably through the entry damage; level only as a sorcery when mana is not needed for interaction and the next attack/end step benefits.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{G}, then {1}{G} for Level 2 and {3}{G} for Level 3; outputs removal, attack pump/trample, and end-step draw with a power 4+ creature.
- Mode map: Level 1 entry makes target creature you control deal damage to target creature you don't control; Level 2 gives an attacking creature +1/+0 and trample each attack; Level 3 draws at end step if you control power 4 or greater.
- Partners / packages: Best damage sources include Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Bloodbraid Challenger, Temur Battlecrier, Undermountain Adventurer, Hauntwoods Shrieker, Cankerbloom, and Fury.
- Role peers: Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, and Iroh's Demonstration remove creatures more directly; Eshki Dragonclaw and Deeproot Wayfinder are other advantage engines.
- Failure modes: Targeting a small creature into a larger blocker can waste the spell; leveling while behind can forfeit Counterspell, Memory Lapse, or removal mana.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in creature midrange; risky against instant-speed removal that can kill your chosen creature before the damage action resolves.
Searslicer Goblin
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, raid token pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: Rewards attacking by creating a 1/1 red Goblin token at your end step, increasing board material for pressure, blocking, and saddle costs.
- Timing: Cast before a turn where you can attack safely; avoid playing it into boards where no attack is profitable and a 2/1 body will not matter.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs a 2/1 and, if you attacked this turn, a 1/1 red Goblin creature token at end step.
- Partners / packages: Works with Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Cunning Coyote, Loyal Apprentice, Lavaspur Boots, Atarka's Command, Gruul Charm, and Ornery Tumblewagg.
- Role peers: Loyal Apprentice also makes attack-ready flying tokens with commander present; Hauntwoods Shrieker makes face-down 2/2s through attacks.
- Failure modes: Attacking a key creature into a bad block just to turn on raid can lose material; the token does not appear if you did not attack.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against control when repeated small bodies tax removal; weaker against sweepers and large blockers.
Lavaspur Boots
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, haste and ward Equipment role player.
- Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Gives equipped creature +1/+0, haste, and ward {1}, letting Eshki Dragonclaw, Kellan, Deeproot Wayfinder, or a finisher attack sooner and become harder to target.
- Timing: Cast early when you have a creature curve; equip before combat when haste or extra damage matters, but leave mana for Snakeskin Veil, Spell Pierce, or Lightning Bolt if protection is more important.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}; equip costs {1}; outputs +1/+0, haste, and ward {1} on the equipped creature.
- Partners / packages: Strong carriers are Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Deeproot Wayfinder, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Cunning Coyote, Den Protector, and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft.
- Role peers: Cunning Coyote grants haste to another target creature for one turn; Snakeskin Veil and Lazotep Plating protect without increasing damage.
- Failure modes: Ward {1} does not stop sweepers, edicts, or removal when the opponent can pay; equipping a replaceable creature can waste tempo.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against spot removal and control; weaker against go-wide aggro where blocking and immediate removal matter more.
Armored Scrapgorger
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, mana creature with incidental graveyard hate.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; hate piece; engine payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Taps for one mana of any color and exiles a target card from a graveyard when it becomes tapped, slowly growing toward a 3/3 attacker after three oil counters.
- Timing: Cast early for fixing; tap proactively when mana is useful and a graveyard card is worth exiling, but preserve as blocker against pressure if mana is not needed.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{G}; taps for one mana of any color; each tap exiles target card from a graveyard and adds an oil counter; gets +3/+0 at three or more oil counters.
- Partners / packages: Supports Eshki Dragonclaw colors, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Counterspell, Prismari Charm, Atarka's Command, and sideboard Force of Vigor pitch planning by improving mana.
- Role peers: Llanowar Elves and Elvish Mystic are cheaper green-only mana creatures; Sakura-Tribe Elder and Studious First-Year // Rampant Growth are land-based ramp.
- Failure modes: Exiling your own future Reclaim, Den Protector, Pinnacle Monk, Bloodbraid Challenger, or Balustrade Wurm resource can backfire; summoning sickness delays mana output.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against graveyard decks and color-stressed hands; vulnerable to cheap removal before it produces mana.
Sakura-Tribe Elder
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, land-ramp and defensive speed-bump.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Blocks or sits in play, then sacrifices to find Island, Forest, or Mountain onto the battlefield tapped, fixing Eshki's three-color curve.
- Timing: Cast early when land count or colors matter; sacrifice before damage if blocking, or end step if waiting preserves information.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{G}; sacrifices itself to search a basic land card, put it onto battlefield tapped, then shuffle.
- Partners / packages: Finds Island for Counterspell/cantrips, Forest for green-heavy curves and Utopia Sprawl targets, Mountain for Lightning Bolt/Burst Lightning/red threats; shuffles after Brainstorm.
- Role peers: Fabled Passage and Studious First-Year // Rampant Growth also put basics onto battlefield; Ash Barrens finds basics to hand.
- Failure modes: Sacrificing too early can lose a needed blocker; waiting too long can miss a color for Eshki Dragonclaw or Counterspell.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against aggro as a blocker plus ramp; against control, use it to hit land drops and shuffle Brainstorm cards.
Siren Stormtamer
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, one-mana protection creature and evasive chip threat.
- Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock; interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Flies for early damage and can sacrifice for {U} to counter target spell or ability that targets you or a creature you control.
- Timing: Deploy before Eshki Dragonclaw or another important creature when spot removal is likely; hold activation for removal, burn, bounce, or ability targets that matter.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs a 1/1 flying body and a protection counter by paying {U} and sacrificing itself.
- Partners / packages: Protects Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Deeproot Wayfinder, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, and Hunter's Talent target creatures.
- Role peers: Malevolent Hermit counters noncreature spells unless {3}; Lazotep Plating gives you and permanents hexproof; Snakeskin Veil protects one creature with a counter.
- Failure modes: Does not counter sweepers or edicts that do not target you or your creature; sacrificing it for a low-impact spell can expose the real threat later.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against removal-heavy and burn decks; less relevant when opponent uses non-targeted sweepers or combat-only pressure.
Cankerbloom
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, maindeck artifact/enchantment answer with body.
- Role type: interaction-removal; hate piece; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Provides a 3/2 body that can sacrifice for {1} to destroy target artifact, destroy target enchantment, or proliferate existing counters.
- Timing: Cast as board presence when pressure matters; hold or preserve when a visible artifact/enchantment engine is likely to matter before combat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{G}; outputs a 3/2 creature, or later consumes {1} plus sacrifice for one chosen effect.
- Mode map: Destroy target artifact for equipment, mana rocks, artifact engines, or Grafdigger's Cage-type hate; destroy target enchantment for lock pieces or Auras; proliferate when +1/+1 counters on Eshki Dragonclaw, Ornery Tumblewagg counters, stun counters, or oil counters matter more than removal.
- Partners / packages: Counter synergies include Eshki Dragonclaw, Ornery Tumblewagg, Snakeskin Veil, Hunter's Talent, Armored Scrapgorger, and Floodpits Drowner's stun counters.
- Role peers: Force of Vigor, Abrade, and Ancient Grudge are sideboard artifact/enchantment answers; Prismari Charm and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft can temporarily answer nonland permanents.
- Failure modes: Sacrificing it for a low-value target can leave you without an answer to a real engine; proliferate is poor without meaningful counters.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High priority against equipment, prison, artifact mana, and enchantment engines; ordinary 3/2 pressure against decks with no targets.
Brainstorm
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, high-ceiling instant card selection.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Draws three then puts two cards from hand on top, letting this deck find Counterspell, Lightning Bolt, Snakeskin Veil, Eshki Dragonclaw, Island, Mountain, Forest, or Cinder Glade while setting up shuffle effects.
- Timing: Best with Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Studious First-Year // Rampant Growth, or other shuffle access; cast without shuffle only when you need an immediate answer or land.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; draws three, then puts two cards from hand on top in any order.
- Partners / packages: Shuffle partners are Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and Studious First-Year // Rampant Growth; finds Counterspell, Lightning Bolt, Snakeskin Veil, Eshki Dragonclaw, Utopia Sprawl, Island, Mountain, Forest, Cinder Glade, and Command Tower.
- Role peers: Preordain, Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Expressive Iteration, Frantic Search, and Prismari Charm provide selection with different timing and card-flow patterns.
- Failure modes: Brainstorm-locking with two uncastable cards on top can lose multiple draw steps; using it after land drop can miss a land that would have changed the turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against discard or removal-light control, can hide key cards on top; against aggro, use earlier if the hand needs Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Unsummon, Snap, Island, Forest, Mountain, Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, or Command Tower.
Wild Growth
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, core enchant-land acceleration.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants any land and adds an extra {G} whenever that land is tapped for mana, powering early Eshki Dragonclaw, Hunter's Talent levels, and green finishers.
- Timing: Cast early when the enchanted land will be used repeatedly; avoid tapping off blue or red interaction if the opponent's next play matters more.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G} and a land target; outputs extra {G} whenever enchanted land is tapped for mana.
- Partners / packages: Strong with Frantic Search and Snap because untapping enchanted lands creates extra mana; supports Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Cankerbloom, Hunter's Talent, and Eshki Dragonclaw.
- Role peers: Utopia Sprawl fixes chosen colors but only enchants Forest; Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, and Undermountain Adventurer also ramp.
- Failure modes: Adds only {G}, so it cannot directly solve blue Counterspell or red Lightning Bolt needs; enchanting a land vulnerable to bounce or tapping constraints can cost tempo.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best in slower games and hands with green-heavy top end; against fast decks, cast only if it does not delay removal.
Pawpatch Formation
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, flexible instant utility.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; card selection; lifegain/stabilization.
- Deck-specific job: Answers a flyer, destroys an enchantment, or cycles into a card plus Food token for later life.
- Timing: Hold when opponent has flying pressure or an enchantment engine; use draw-plus-Food when no target matters and you need velocity or life buffering.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{G}; outputs one chosen effect, with Food later costing {2}, {T}, sacrifice to gain 3 life.
- Mode map: Destroy target creature with flying for evasive attackers/blockers; destroy target enchantment for locks, Auras, or engines; draw a card and create a Food token when interaction text is not live or life total matters.
- Partners / packages: Removal overlaps with Gruul Charm's flying-creature damage mode, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Fury, and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft; Food helps racing alongside blockers like Sakura-Tribe Elder and Armored Scrapgorger.
- Role peers: Cankerbloom destroys enchantments; Gruul Charm damages each creature with flying; Soul-Guide Lantern can sacrifice to draw when graveyard hate is low-value.
- Failure modes: Drawing a card instead of killing a flying attacker can lose the race; Food is an artifact token but this deck has no broad artifact-sacrifice engine.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High value against flyers, Bogles-style enchantments, and red races; low value as enchantment removal against decks with no enchantments.
Ornery Tumblewagg
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, counter-scaling combat role player.
- Role type: engine piece; protection/evasion; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Puts a +1/+1 counter on target creature at beginning of combat and can double +1/+1 counters on target creature when it attacks while saddled.
- Timing: Cast when you have creatures to receive counters or saddle; saddle only as a sorcery when tapping other creatures will not expose you to a losing attack.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{G}; outputs repeat +1/+1 counters and, if saddled, counter-doubling on attack; saddle 2 taps other creatures with total power 2 or more.
- Mode map: Beginning-combat trigger adds one +1/+1 counter to target creature; saddle 2 turns on attack trigger that doubles +1/+1 counters on target creature.
- Partners / packages: Best counter targets are Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Den Protector after megamorph, Armored Scrapgorger, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft; saddle material includes Searslicer Goblin tokens, Loyal Apprentice Thopters, Studious First-Year, and manifest dread creatures from Hauntwoods Shrieker.
- Role peers: Hunter's Talent boosts attacking creatures and draws from power 4+; Snakeskin Veil also adds a +1/+1 counter.
- Failure modes: Saddling with needed blockers can lose to crackback; counters on a creature about to be bounced or exiled are poor investment.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in stalled boards and against midrange; risky against instant-speed removal and go-wide aggro.
Growth Spiral
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, instant-speed ramp cantrip.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Draws a card and may put a land card from hand onto the battlefield, helping the deck hit Eshki Dragonclaw and hold up blue interaction.
- Timing: Cast before land drop if drawing might change the land choice; cast on opponent end step if holding up interaction is more important.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}{U}; outputs one card drawn and optional extra land from hand to battlefield.
- Partners / packages: Extra lands include Island, Forest, Mountain, Command Tower, Dreamroot Cascade, Fabled Passage, Sodden Verdure, Sulfur Falls, Cinder Glade, Exotic Orchard, Hinterland Harbor, Rootbound Crag, Ash Barrens, and Mystic Peak.
- Role peers: Sakura-Tribe Elder and Studious First-Year // Rampant Growth put basics onto battlefield; Utopia Sprawl and Wild Growth ramp through enchantments.
- Failure modes: Casting with no land in hand reduces it to an expensive cantrip; putting a tapped conditional land in at the wrong time can still leave interaction unavailable.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control and midrange for land velocity; against aggro, ensure the mana spent does not skip removal.
Preordain
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, premium sorcery-speed selection.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Scry 2 then draw, finding the exact missing land, color, cheap interaction, or threat/protection piece.
- Timing: Cast before land drop when it can change the land; hold only when blue mana must represent instant interaction.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; looks at top two, puts any number on bottom and rest on top in any order, then draws.
- Partners / packages: Digs for Forest plus Utopia Sprawl, Island plus Counterspell, Mountain plus Lightning Bolt, Eshki Dragonclaw, Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Veil of Summer, Endurance, Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, and Grafdigger's Cage after boarding.
- Role peers: Sleight of Hand chooses one of two; Opt and Consider are instant speed; Brainstorm has higher ceiling with shuffle.
- Failure modes: Keeping an expensive payoff on top while missing a land or interaction can lose tempo; sorcery timing can expose a Spell Pierce window.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against fast decks, bottom slow cards for removal/lands; against control, keep permission and resilient threats.
Llanowar Elves
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, core one-mana green acceleration.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Turns one green mana into repeat {G}, accelerating Eshki Dragonclaw, Hunter's Talent, Cankerbloom, and top-end green threats.
- Timing: Play turn one when possible unless holding interaction is urgently required; avoid attacking or trading if the next turn needs extra mana.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; taps for {G} after summoning sickness.
- Partners / packages: Accelerates Eshki Dragonclaw, Undermountain Adventurer, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Hunter's Talent levels, Cankerbloom activations, and Force of Vigor hard casts.
- Role peers: Elvish Mystic is identical in role; Armored Scrapgorger fixes any color but costs two; Sakura-Tribe Elder provides land ramp.
- Failure modes: Dies to cheap removal and sweepers; treating it as a disposable attacker can delay the commander or Counterspell-plus-threat turns.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in openers against slower decks; against red removal-heavy decks, consider whether a land-ramp line is more resilient.
Atarka's Command
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, combat/reach modal swing spell.
- Role type: modal utility; reach/finisher; interaction-removal; mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Chooses two effects that can stop life gain, deal 3 to the opponent, put a land onto battlefield, or pump the team with reach for a combat swing.
- Timing: Save for lethal or a decisive combat when possible; use land mode early only when the extra land changes the next turn more than holding reach.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}{G}; outputs two selected effects.
- Mode map: Opponents can't gain life stops life-swing turns; 3 damage to each opponent provides reach; put a land card from hand onto battlefield ramps/fixes; creatures you control get +1/+1 and gain reach for attacks, blocks, or anti-flyer combat.
- Partners / packages: Strong with Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Searslicer Goblin tokens, Loyal Apprentice Thopters, Eshki Dragonclaw, Cunning Coyote, and Bloodbraid Challenger.
- Role peers: Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, and Ghostfire Slice provide single-target reach; Gruul Charm also changes combat; Growth Spiral also puts lands onto battlefield while drawing.
- Failure modes: Choosing pump without enough attackers wastes a mode; choosing land mode when a lethal 3-damage line exists can miss a win.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against lifegain and go-wide combat boards; less valuable when you have no creatures and opponent life is high.
Temur Battlecrier
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, power-4 cost-reduction payoff body.
- Role type: engine payoff; mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: During your turn, reduces your spell costs by {1} for each creature you control with power 4 or greater, turning big creatures and pumped Eshki into mana advantage.
- Timing: Cast when you already have or can soon create power-4 creatures; do not tap out for it if no discount will matter before it dies.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}{U}{R}; outputs a 4/3 body and turn-only generic cost reduction tied to your power-4-or-greater creatures.
- Partners / packages: Enables discounts with Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Bloodbraid Challenger, Undermountain Adventurer after pump, Hunter's Talent Level 3 board, Ornery Tumblewagg counters, and Snakeskin Veil counters.
- Role peers: Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Armored Scrapgorger, and Undermountain Adventurer provide more direct mana.
- Failure modes: Reduces generic costs only, not colored pips; playing it into removal before using the discount loses tempo.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in midrange boards with large creatures; weak when behind and lacking a power-4 creature.
Soul-Guide Lantern
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, graveyard hate artifact with card-draw fallback.
- Role type: hate piece; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Exiles one target card from a graveyard on entry, then can sacrifice to exile each opponent's graveyard or pay {1} to draw a card.
- Timing: Cast when an important graveyard card is present or mana is spare; hold sacrifice until the opponent commits to a graveyard line unless drawing is more important.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}; entry exiles target card from a graveyard; tap-sacrifice exiles each opponent's graveyard; {1}, tap, sacrifice draws a card.
- Mode map: Entry targets one card; graveyard-hate sacrifice clears each opponent's graveyard; draw sacrifice replaces itself when graveyard hate is low-value.
- Partners / packages: Layers with Tormod's Crypt, Armored Scrapgorger, Endurance, and Grafdigger's Cage; artifact card type can matter for Balustrade Wurm delirium if it goes to graveyard.
- Role peers: Tormod's Crypt is zero-mana full-graveyard exile for one target player; Endurance puts graveyards into libraries; Grafdigger's Cage prevents graveyard/library casting and creature entry.
- Failure modes: Exiling a minor card on entry while a key target will appear soon can lose value; drawing too early can remove your graveyard shield.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High priority versus recursion and escape; low priority against decks with no graveyard use.
Counterspell
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, core hard stack interaction.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell on the stack, protecting Eshki Dragonclaw and stopping the opponent's highest-impact payoff, sweeper, combo piece, or removal spell.
- Timing: Hold for spells that change the game; spend earlier only when tempo or survival demands it.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{U}; outputs unconditional countering of target spell.
- Partners / packages: Protected-threat partners include Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Hunter's Talent, Loyal Apprentice, and Deeproot Wayfinder; other stack tools are Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, It'll Quench Ya!, Malevolent Hermit, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Hydroblast.
- Role peers: Memory Lapse delays any spell; Daze, Spell Pierce, It'll Quench Ya!, and Malevolent Hermit tax narrower spell classes.
- Failure modes: Countering a low-impact spell can leave you dead to the real payoff; tapping double blue carelessly can strand Snap, Unsubstantiate, or Lazotep Plating.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against combo and control; against creature swarms, use only on the threat that removal/bounce cannot handle.
It'll Quench Ya!
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, soft counterspell role player.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell unless its controller pays {2}, giving the deck another early stack-tax effect for tempo and protected commitment turns.
- Timing: Use while the opponent is tapped low or the tax will force them off a follow-up; avoid holding until they can easily pay {2}.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; targets a spell on the stack; counters unless its controller pays {2}.
- Partners / packages: Works with Daze, Spell Pierce, Memory Lapse, Counterspell, Malevolent Hermit, and pressure from Eshki Dragonclaw, Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft.
- Role peers: Spell Pierce costs {U} but only hits noncreature spells; Daze can be free but taxes {1}; Memory Lapse counters and puts on top.
- Failure modes: Pointing it at a spell when the opponent can pay {2} and still execute their turn wastes mana; it does not answer resolved permanents.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against tempo, control, and combo during early turns; weaker in late topdeck games with abundant mana.
Loyal Apprentice
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, commander-linked token pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine piece; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: With Eshki Dragonclaw under your control at beginning of combat, creates a hasty 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature token with flying each turn.
- Timing: Cast before or after Eshki depending on removal risk; strongest when Eshki is already in play and combat starts immediately.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs a 2/1 haste body and repeat flying artifact tokens if commander condition is met.
- Partners / packages: Works with Eshki Dragonclaw, Atarka's Command, Ornery Tumblewagg saddle, Hunter's Talent, Gruul Charm, Lavaspur Boots, and Snakeskin Veil.
- Role peers: Searslicer Goblin makes 1/1 Goblin tokens after attacks; Hauntwoods Shrieker manifests dread on attacks.
- Failure modes: Without Eshki, it is mostly a fragile 2/1 haste creature; overcommitting token pressure into sweepers can lose material.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against control when Eshki sticks; against flyers or sweepers, evaluate whether the token engine will survive.
Malevolent Hermit
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, anti-noncreature stack creature with graveyard second face.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Sacrifices for {U} to counter target noncreature spell unless its controller pays {3}; from graveyard, disturb casts Benevolent Geist to make your noncreature spells uncounterable.
- Timing: Deploy before critical Eshki or finisher turns; sacrifice only for a noncreature spell that matters; disturb when a 2/2 flyer and uncounterable noncreature spells improve a stack fight.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; activation consumes {U} and Malevolent Hermit; disturb consumes {2}{U} from graveyard and exiles it if Benevolent Geist would go to a graveyard.
- Mode map: Malevolent Hermit is a 2/1 with a noncreature-spell tax counter; Benevolent Geist is a 2/2 flying Spirit that makes your noncreature spells unable to be countered.
- Partners / packages: Protects Eshki Dragonclaw by countering removal or sweepers that are noncreature spells; supports Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Lightning Bolt, Expressive Iteration, Hunter's Talent, and Atarka's Command after disturbing.
- Role peers: Siren Stormtamer protects targets; Spell Pierce taxes noncreature spells; Veil of Summer protects against blue/black and prevents your spells from being countered that turn.
- Failure modes: Cannot counter creature spells; sacrificing it too early can lose the disturb plan or a blocker.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control, combo, and sweeper decks; weaker against creature-heavy boards.
Prismari Charm
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, flexible instant selection, ping, or bounce.
- Role type: modal utility; card selection; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Chooses between surveil-plus-draw, split small damage, or bouncing a nonland permanent to reset tempo or clear attacks.
- Timing: Use selection when digging is better than interaction; hold for combat when one damage to one or two targets or nonland bounce changes the race.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{R}; outputs one chosen mode.
- Mode map: Surveil 2 then draw digs and fills graveyard; deal 1 damage to each of one or two targets kills one-toughness creatures, chips planeswalkers, or finishes damaged targets; return target nonland permanent to owner's hand buys tempo against blockers, engines, tokens, or hate.
- Partners / packages: Selection supports Reclaim, Den Protector, Pinnacle Monk, Bloodbraid Challenger, and Balustrade Wurm; interaction overlaps with Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, and Fury.
- Role peers: Expressive Iteration is stronger sorcery selection; Banishing Betrayal bounces nonland permanent and surveils 1; Fury handles larger creature boards.
- Failure modes: One damage is not removal against most creatures without prior damage; bouncing a cheap enters-effect permanent can help the opponent.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High flexibility against unknown opponents; mode choice should follow visible target and hand bottleneck.
Memory Lapse
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, tempo counterspell role player.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell on the stack and puts it on top of its owner's library, buying a turn while disrupting the opponent's next draw.
- Timing: Use on expensive spells, commanders, sweepers, or combo pieces when the tempo swing matters; less ideal if the opponent can immediately redraw and recast profitably.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs countering target spell and topdecking it if countered this way.
- Partners / packages: Pairs with pressure from Eshki Dragonclaw, Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Loyal Apprentice, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, Tyrranax Rex, and Balustrade Wurm.
- Role peers: Counterspell permanently counters; Daze, Spell Pierce, It'll Quench Ya!, and Malevolent Hermit tax mana.
- Failure modes: Topdecking a cheap spell can be low impact; using it where a permanent answer is needed next turn may only delay the loss.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against big mana and tap-out control; weaker in grindy games where the opponent wants the same spell next turn.
Deeproot Wayfinder
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, attack-based land recursion and graveyard setup.
- Role type: engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: When it deals combat damage to a player or battle, surveils 1 and may return a land card from your graveyard to battlefield tapped.
- Timing: Cast when you can clear a path or opponent lacks profitable blocks; prioritize attacks when Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Mystic Peak, or fetch/sacrificed lands are in graveyard.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{G}; outputs 2/3 body, surveil 1 on combat damage, and possible tapped land return.
- Partners / packages: Land-return targets include Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Mystic Peak, Island, Forest, Mountain, and lands milled by Consider, Prismari Charm, or Hauntwoods Shrieker; evasion/clearance comes from Unsummon, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, Lightning Bolt, and Lavaspur Boots.
- Role peers: Growth Spiral puts lands from hand onto battlefield; Sakura-Tribe Elder finds basics; Reclaim can put lands on top but not battlefield.
- Failure modes: Attacking into a trade when the land return is not ready can waste the engine; surveil can put nonland cards in graveyard but does not guarantee a land.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in attrition and mana-denial games; weaker against large blockers and graveyard hate.
Gruul Charm
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, combat evasion or anti-flyer modal instant.
- Role type: modal utility; protection/evasion; interaction-sweeper.
- Deck-specific job: Can make creatures without flying unable to block this turn, regain permanents you own, or deal 3 damage to each creature with flying.
- Timing: Use first mode for lethal or a major attack; use flying damage before combat when flyers threaten racing or blocking; ownership mode only when opponent controls permanents you own.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}{G}; outputs one chosen mode.
- Mode map: Nonflying creatures can't block this turn opens ground attacks for Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Bloodbraid Challenger, and Zurgo Bellstriker; gain control of all permanents you own answers theft effects; 3 damage to each creature with flying damages your flyers too, including Siren Stormtamer, Loyal Apprentice Thopters, Brazen Borrower, and Benevolent Geist.
- Partners / packages: Ground attackers include Eshki Dragonclaw, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Zurgo Bellstriker, Cunning Coyote, Bloodbraid Challenger, Tyrranax Rex, and Balustrade Wurm.
- Role peers: Atarka's Command pumps and grants reach; Pawpatch Formation destroys one flying creature; Fury handles creatures/planeswalkers with divided damage.
- Failure modes: The flying-damage mode can kill your own Siren Stormtamer, Thopter tokens, Brazen Borrower, or Benevolent Geist; first mode does not stop flying creatures from blocking.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus ground stalls and flyer boards; narrow against noncombat combo/control.
Unsubstantiate
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, flexible spell-or-creature tempo answer.
- Role type: interaction-removal; interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Returns target spell or creature to its owner's hand, delaying a spell on the stack or resetting a creature without permanently answering it.
- Timing: Use on expensive spells/creatures, lethal attackers, protected blockers, or stack objects your other counters cannot handle profitably.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs bounce of target spell on the stack or target creature.
- Mode map: Spell bounce delays any target spell without countering it; creature bounce removes an attacker/blocker or saves your own creature when legal.
- Partners / packages: Works with Eshki Dragonclaw pressure, Memory Lapse tempo, Snap, Unsummon, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, and Counterspell.
- Role peers: Unsummon only hits creatures; Snap hits creatures and untaps lands; Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft hits opposing nonland permanents; Memory Lapse counters a spell to top of library.
- Failure modes: Opponent can recast the spell or creature; using it on a cheap spell may not gain enough tempo.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against expensive commanders, delve/escape spells already cast, and combat blowouts; less effective against cheap value creatures.
Lazotep Plating
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, board-wide targeted-protection instant.
- Role type: protection/evasion; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: Gives you and permanents you control hexproof until end of turn and amasses Zombies 1, creating or growing a Zombie Army with a +1/+1 counter.
- Timing: Hold for targeted removal, burn, discard targeting you, bounce, or ability windows that threaten Eshki Dragonclaw, a finisher, Hunter's Talent target, or lethal attacker.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs hexproof for you and your permanents until end of turn plus a Zombie Army token or counter.
- Partners / packages: Protects Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Hunter's Talent, Loyal Apprentice, Ornery Tumblewagg counters, and a lethal combat board.
- Role peers: Snakeskin Veil protects one creature and adds a counter; Siren Stormtamer counters one targeting spell/ability; Veil of Summer protects from blue/black and draws conditionally.
- Failure modes: Does not stop non-targeted sweepers, edicts, combat damage, or spells already resolving without targets; amass token is secondary and should not drive timing.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against spot-removal decks and discard targeting you; weaker against sacrifice and sweeper-heavy decks.
Den Protector
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, recursion creature and evasive pressure role player.
- Role type: recursion; threat/clock; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Can be cast normally as a 2/1 with evasion against lower-power blockers, or face down and turned face up with megamorph to return target card from graveyard to hand.
- Timing: Cast face down when you can safely invest {3} plus {1}{G}; cast normally when early board presence matters more than recursion.
- Inputs / outputs: Normal cast consumes {1}{G}; face-down cast consumes {3}; megamorph consumes {1}{G}, adds a +1/+1 counter, and returns target card from graveyard to hand.
- Mode map: Normal Den Protector attacks through creatures with lower power; megamorph line is a delayed recursion spell attached to a larger creature.
- Partners / packages: Recursion targets include Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Lightning Bolt, Fury, Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, Utopia Sprawl, Hunter's Talent, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Veil of Summer, Endurance, Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, and Grafdigger's Cage.
- Role peers: Reclaim puts any graveyard card on top; Pinnacle Monk returns only instant or sorcery cards to hand.
- Failure modes: Face-down investment is slow against aggro; returning a card without mana or time to cast it wastes the turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in attrition and control; against fast decks, prioritize immediate blockers/removal over setup.
Tyrranax Rex
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, top-end resilient finisher.
- Role type: threat/clock; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: An uncounterable 8/8 with trample, ward {4}, haste, and toxic 4 that can immediately pressure life total and poison while stabilizing combat.
- Timing: Cast when seven mana is available and the shields-down turn will not lose to a visible combo or lethal board; haste makes same-turn attacks relevant.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {4}{G}{G}{G}; outputs uncounterable large trample haste body with ward {4} and toxic 4.
- Partners / packages: Supported by Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, Undermountain Adventurer, Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, Lavaspur Boots, and Hunter's Talent.
- Role peers: Balustrade Wurm is another hasty trampler with graveyard recursion; Eshki Dragonclaw scales through counters and draw; Bloodbraid Challenger is smaller but cascades/escapes.
- Failure modes: Ward {4} taxes targeted answers but does not stop sweepers, edicts, or sacrifice effects; triple green can be stranded in poor mana hands.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against control and midrange; against combo, only commit if the clock plus available disruption beats their next turn.
Fury
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, emergency multi-target removal and double-strike body.
- Role type: interaction-removal; interaction-sweeper; threat/clock; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Either casts as a 3/3 double striker that divides 4 damage among target creatures and/or planeswalkers, or evokes by exiling a red card for a tempo removal burst.
- Timing: Evoke when survival, a decisive attack, or clearing multiple creatures outweighs card disadvantage; hard-cast when a double-strike body matters after stabilizing.
- Inputs / outputs: Hard cast consumes {3}{R}{R}; evoke consumes exile of a red card from hand; outputs 4 divided damage among chosen creature/planeswalker targets and a 3/3 double strike body only if not sacrificed through evoke.
- Mode map: Hard-cast mode is removal plus persistent threat; evoke mode is pitch removal and no lasting body unless another effect changes the sacrifice outcome.
- Partners / packages: Red cards that can be pitched only when expendable include Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Searslicer Goblin, Ghostfire Slice, Atarka's Command, Prismari Charm, Gruul Charm, Cunning Coyote, and Bloodbraid Challenger.
- Role peers: Iroh's Demonstration deals 1 to each opposing creature or 4 to target creature; Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, and Ghostfire Slice are cheaper single-target damage.
- Failure modes: Fury cannot target players; pitching the only red interaction or key threat can lose the follow-up game.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against small-creature boards and planeswalkers; less useful against large single threats outside 4 damage range.
Snakeskin Veil
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, one-mana creature protection and counter trick.
- Role type: protection/evasion; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Puts a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control and gives it hexproof until end of turn, protecting key threats while increasing future damage.
- Timing: Hold for targeted removal or combat where the counter changes survival/lethal; cast proactively only when the counter unlocks Eshki, Hunter's Talent, or Ornery Tumblewagg math.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; targets your creature; outputs one +1/+1 counter and hexproof until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Best targets are Eshki Dragonclaw, Deeproot Wayfinder, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, Balustrade Wurm, Tyrranax Rex, and creatures involved in Hunter's Talent.
- Role peers: Lazotep Plating gives broader hexproof but no counter; Siren Stormtamer counters targeting spells/abilities; Tam, Mindful First-Year gives color-based hexproof to other creatures.
- Failure modes: Does not stop sweepers, edicts, or damage that does not target; targeting a low-impact creature may leave the real threat exposed.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High value against spot removal and combat tricks; lower value against non-targeting control.
Burst Lightning
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, cheap damage interaction with kicker reach.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 2 damage to any target for {R}, or 4 damage if kicked for an additional {4}.
- Timing: Use unkicked early for one- or two-toughness creatures, damaged creatures, or planeswalkers; save kicked mode when five mana converts it into a large removal spell or lethal reach.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}, plus optional kicker {4}; outputs 2 damage to any target, or 4 if kicked.
- Mode map: Unkicked mode is efficient early interaction or reach; kicked mode is late-game 4 damage when five mana is available.
- Partners / packages: Combines with Lightning Bolt, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, Prismari Charm, Atarka's Command, Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft.
- Role peers: Lightning Bolt always deals 3 for {R}; Ghostfire Slice deals 4 for {2}{R} or less with opponent multicolored permanent.
- Failure modes: Waiting for kicker can let a two-toughness threat deal too much damage; spending it for 2 at face may lose a removal window.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against aggro, unkicked mode is often correct on early attackers or utility creatures; against control, kicked mode and face damage become more relevant.
Brazen Borrower
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, adventure bounce plus flash flying threat.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Petty Theft bounces target nonland permanent an opponent controls, then Brazen Borrower provides flash flying pressure that blocks only creatures with flying.
- Timing: Use Petty Theft for tempo before committing the creature when possible; flash in Brazen Borrower end step or as a flying blocker only when its blocking restriction is relevant.
- Inputs / outputs: Petty Theft consumes {1}{U}; creature consumes {1}{U}{U}; outputs nonland permanent bounce and later 3/1 flash flying body.
- Mode map: Petty Theft returns target nonland permanent an opponent controls to its owner's hand; Brazen Borrower is a 3/1 flash flyer that can block only creatures with flying.
- Partners / packages: Bounce supports attacks from Eshki Dragonclaw, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Zurgo Bellstriker, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, and Bloodbraid Challenger; flash body pairs with Counterspell and Memory Lapse draw-go turns.
- Role peers: Unsubstantiate hits spells or creatures; Snap and Unsummon hit creatures; Banishing Betrayal bounces nonland permanent and surveils 1.
- Failure modes: Petty Theft cannot target your own permanent or lands; Brazen Borrower cannot block nonflying attackers.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus tokens, equipment, planeswalkers, and temporary tempo; weak as permanent removal against cheap recast threats.
Rootbound Crag
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, red-green mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Supplies {R} or {G} for red removal and green ramp/threats, supporting Atarka's Command and Gruul Charm.
- Timing: Play after Mountain, Forest, Cinder Glade, or Sodden Verdure when possible so it enters untapped; avoid relying on it as turn-one untapped mana.
- Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped unless you control a Mountain or a Forest; taps for {R} or {G}.
- Partners / packages: Casts Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Utopia Sprawl follow-ups, Snakeskin Veil, Cankerbloom, Atarka's Command, Gruul Charm, and Bloodbraid Challenger.
- Role peers: Cinder Glade is typed {R}/{G}; Command Tower and Exotic Orchard can produce both with broader conditions.
- Failure modes: Tapped entry can miss one-mana interaction or ramp; cannot produce blue for Counterspell or Eshki's blue pip.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in creature races where red removal and green bodies matter; weaker in blue-heavy permission hands.
Expressive Iteration
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, sorcery card advantage and selection.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Looks at top three, puts one in hand, one on bottom, and one in exile that may be played this turn, helping convert two mana into a land drop plus spell.
- Timing: Best before land drop with enough mana to use the exiled card; avoid casting when the exile card is likely to be wasted.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{R}; outputs one card to hand, one card to bottom, one temporary-play exile card.
- Partners / packages: High-value hits include lands before land drop, one-mana spells such as Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Opt, Consider, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, Snakeskin Veil, and cheap creatures such as Zurgo Bellstriker, Siren Stormtamer, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, and Kellan, Planar Trailblazer.
- Role peers: Frantic Search filters at instant speed; Prismari Charm surveils/draws; Preordain and Sleight of Hand are cheaper setup.
- Failure modes: Exiling an uncastable expensive card or a land after land drop wastes part of the spell; tapping {U}{R} can remove interaction mana.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in slower games; against aggro, cast only when it finds or plays immediate interaction.
Bloodbraid Challenger
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, hasty cascade threat with graveyard recast.
- Role type: threat/clock; card selection; recursion; mechanic payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Casts as a 4/3 haste with cascade, and later escapes from graveyard by paying {3}{R}{G} and exiling three other graveyard cards.
- Timing: Cast when cascade can swing tempo and haste damage matters; escape only when exiling three other cards does not undercut Reclaim, Den Protector, Pinnacle Monk, or Balustrade Wurm needs.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{R}{G}; outputs cascade, 4/3 haste body, and possible graveyard recast for {3}{R}{G} plus exiling three other cards.
- Mode map: Normal cast cascades into a cheaper spell and attacks immediately; escape casts from graveyard for the same mana cost plus exiling three other graveyard cards.
- Partners / packages: Cascade can hit many cheap spells including Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Opt, Consider, Sleight of Hand, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Spell Pierce, Snakeskin Veil, Cankerbloom, Growth Spiral, and Prismari Charm.
- Role peers: Balustrade Wurm is another graveyard-recurring haste threat; Fury and Tyrranax Rex are other high-impact threats.
- Failure modes: Cascade may reveal a situational spell with no good target; escape can consume graveyard resources needed for Balustrade Wurm delirium or recursion.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against midrange/control; risky against graveyard hate or boards where 4/3 haste cannot attack profitably.
Spider-Punk
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, disruptive red pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; protection/evasion; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Enters with riot, makes spells and abilities unable to be countered, and prevents damage prevention, giving the deck a way to force key exchanges through counters/prevention.
- Timing: Cast before a critical noncreature or combat sequence when counter-prevention text matters; choose riot mode based on whether immediate haste damage or a lasting +1/+1 counter is better.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs a 2/1 that enters with either haste or a +1/+1 counter, plus static “spells and abilities can't be countered” and “damage can't be prevented.”
- Mode map: Riot haste mode attacks immediately; riot +1/+1 counter mode creates a larger permanent body for future attacks and Hunter's Talent/Ornery Tumblewagg math.
- Partners / packages: Helps Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, Atarka's Command, Hunter's Talent, Eshki Dragonclaw triggers, and key activated/triggered abilities resolve through counter effects.
- Role peers: Benevolent Geist also makes your noncreature spells unable to be countered; Veil of Summer stops your spells from being countered for a turn against blue/black context.
- Failure modes: Static effect is symmetrical if the opponent benefits from uncounterable spells/abilities; choosing haste into a bad attack wastes riot value.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against blue permission and prevention effects; weaker against creature boards where a 2/1 or 3/2 does not profitably attack.
Elvish Mystic
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, core one-mana green acceleration.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Taps for {G}, accelerating Eshki Dragonclaw, green interaction, and top-end threats.
- Timing: Play turn one when possible unless the matchup requires holding immediate interaction; preserve it when next-turn mana matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; taps for {G} after summoning sickness.
- Partners / packages: Accelerates Eshki Dragonclaw, Hunter's Talent, Cankerbloom, Undermountain Adventurer, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, and Force of Vigor hard casts.
- Role peers: Llanowar Elves is identical in function; Armored Scrapgorger fixes any color at two mana; Sakura-Tribe Elder ramps a land.
- Failure modes: Attacking or trading away Elvish Mystic can strand four- and five-mana plays; dies to small sweepers and ping effects.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best in openers with expensive follow-up; against removal-heavy red decks, consider whether land ramp is safer.
Daze
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, free/soft stack interaction.
- Role type: interaction-stack; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell unless its controller pays {1}, with the option to return an Island you control to hand instead of paying mana.
- Timing: Use early while the opponent is mana-constrained or to protect a tapped-out Eshki/finisher turn; loses value as opponent mana grows.
- Inputs / outputs: Either consumes {1}{U} or returns an Island you control to hand; outputs a {1} tax counter attempt on target spell.
- Mode map: Normal cast preserves land development but costs mana; alternate cost protects shields-down turns by returning Island, Sodden Verdure, or another land with Island subtype if you control one.
- Partners / packages: Protects Eshki Dragonclaw, Hunter's Talent, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Bloodbraid Challenger, and early pressure from Zurgo Bellstriker or Kellan, Planar Trailblazer.
- Role peers: Spell Pierce taxes noncreature spells for {2}; It'll Quench Ya! taxes any spell for {2}; Counterspell hard-counters.
- Failure modes: Returning the only blue source can break Counterspell, Memory Lapse, or cantrip sequencing; late Daze may be uncastable as interaction if opponent can pay.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against tempo/combo on early turns; weaker against big mana once they can pay.
Ash Barrens
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, colorless land and basic landcycling fixer.
- Role type: modal utility; tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Either taps for {C} or basic landcycles to find Island, Forest, or Mountain, revealing it and putting it into hand.
- Timing: Basic landcycle early when colors are missing; play as land when colorless mana is acceptable and land count matters more than color.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for {C}; basic landcycling costs {1} and discards Ash Barrens to search for a basic land card, reveal it, put it into hand, then shuffle.
- Mode map: Land mode provides colorless mana for generic costs; basic landcycling mode discards Ash Barrens, searches Island, Forest, or Mountain, reveals it, puts it into hand, then shuffles.
- Partners / packages: Finds Island for Counterspell/cantrips, Forest for Utopia Sprawl/Wild Growth/green ramp, Mountain for Lightning Bolt/Burst Lightning; shuffles after Brainstorm and puts a land in graveyard for Deeproot Wayfinder or Balustrade Wurm delirium.
- Role peers: Fabled Passage fixes onto battlefield; Sakura-Tribe Elder and Studious First-Year // Rampant Growth find basics onto battlefield tapped.
- Failure modes: Keeping Ash Barrens as colorless land can strand colored spells; cycling does not put the basic onto battlefield or draw a card.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against tempo, fixing immediately is usually better than preserving colorless land utility.
Banishing Betrayal
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, bounce plus surveil tempo spell.
- Role type: interaction-removal; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Returns target nonland permanent to its owner's hand and surveils 1, buying tempo while improving the next draw or graveyard setup.
- Timing: Use on a blocker before a meaningful attack, on an engine permanent before it generates value, or defensively against a lethal permanent.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs nonland permanent bounce and surveil 1.
- Partners / packages: Bounce supports Eshki Dragonclaw, Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Bloodbraid Challenger, and Deeproot Wayfinder attacks; surveil supports Reclaim, Den Protector, Pinnacle Monk, Bloodbraid Challenger, and Balustrade Wurm.
- Role peers: Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft hits opposing nonland permanents and leaves a creature adventure; Prismari Charm can bounce target nonland permanent; Unsubstantiate hits spells or creatures.
- Failure modes: Cannot target lands; bouncing cheap enters-effect permanents may give the opponent another trigger.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against tokens, planeswalkers, equipment carriers, and temporary locks; weaker against low-cost value creatures.
Iroh's Demonstration
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, sorcery-speed damage modal removal.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; interaction-sweeper.
- Deck-specific job: Chooses between dealing 1 damage to each creature your opponents control or 4 damage to target creature.
- Timing: Because it is a sorcery, use before combat to clear blockers or stabilize; cannot be held as instant-speed protection during opponent combat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs one chosen damage effect.
- Mode map: One-damage mode hits each creature your opponents control and leaves your creatures unharmed; four-damage mode targets one creature for larger removal.
- Partners / packages: Sets up attacks from Eshki Dragonclaw, Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Bloodbraid Challenger, and Balustrade Wurm; complements Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, and Gruul Charm.
- Role peers: Fury divides 4 among creatures/planeswalkers at creature speed; Lightning Bolt and Ghostfire Slice are instant-speed any-target damage; Gruul Charm hits each creature with flying for 3.
- Failure modes: Sorcery timing means it cannot answer a hasty attacker on opponent turn; one-damage mode may fail against larger boards.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against small go-wide boards; four-damage mode is valuable against single must-kill creatures.
Undermountain Adventurer
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, initiative threat and green ramp body.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Takes the initiative on entry and taps for {G}{G}, or six {G} if you have completed a dungeon, giving the deck a body plus ongoing mana.
- Timing: Cast when a 3/4 vigilance body can defend initiative or when extra green mana enables a follow-up; avoid if losing initiative immediately gives opponent more value than you gain.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{G}; outputs initiative, a 3/4 vigilance body, and a tap ability for {G}{G} or six {G} after dungeon completion.
- Partners / packages: Ramps into Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Hunter's Talent levels, Force of Vigor hard cast, Bloodbraid Challenger escape, and commander tax recasts.
- Role peers: Armored Scrapgorger fixes any color but smaller; Llanowar Elves and Elvish Mystic are cheaper; Temur Battlecrier reduces generic costs with power-4 creatures.
- Failure modes: Only makes green mana, so it may not solve blue Counterspell or red burn needs; initiative can be lost in combat.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in midrange/ramp games; against evasive aggro, ensure you can defend initiative.
Cunning Coyote
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, haste enabler and plotted pressure role player.
- Role type: modal utility; threat/clock; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Hasty 2/2 that gives another target creature you control +1/+1 and haste until end of turn, with plot for delayed free sorcery-speed casting.
- Timing: Cast when immediate haste changes combat; plot on a setup turn when paying {1}{R} now creates a stronger future double-spell or surprise haste turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Normal cast consumes {1}{R}; plot consumes {1}{R} and exiles it from hand, then later casts it as a sorcery without paying mana.
- Mode map: Normal cast gives immediate body and haste/pump to another creature; plot is alternate timing that banks the spell for a later sorcery-speed turn without mana payment.
- Partners / packages: Haste targets include Eshki Dragonclaw, Deeproot Wayfinder, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Balustrade Wurm if recurred without haste concern less relevant, Den Protector, and Bloodbraid Challenger if sequencing needs extra damage.
- Role peers: Lavaspur Boots gives repeat haste and ward; Zurgo Bellstriker and Bloodbraid Challenger have their own haste/dash patterns.
- Failure modes: The target must be another creature you control, so Cunning Coyote cannot pump itself; plotting delays board impact and can be too slow under pressure.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong for surprise commander or value-creature attacks; weak when blockers make haste irrelevant.
Balustrade Wurm
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, hasty trampling finisher with delirium recursion.
- Role type: threat/clock; recursion; mechanic payoff.
- Deck-specific job: A 5/5 uncounterable trample haste threat that can return from graveyard to battlefield with a finality counter if delirium is active.
- Timing: Cast when five mana and haste pressure matter; activate graveyard return only as a sorcery when four or more card types are in your graveyard and losing the finality-counter creature later is acceptable.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{G}{G}; graveyard ability consumes {2}{G}{G}; outputs uncounterable hasty trample body and possible battlefield recursion with a finality counter.
- Mode map: Cast mode is uncounterable immediate pressure; delirium ability returns this card from graveyard to battlefield with a finality counter, only if four or more card types are among cards in your graveyard and only as a sorcery.
- Partners / packages: Delirium card types are supported by Fabled Passage/Ash Barrens lands, Tormod's Crypt/Soul-Guide Lantern artifacts, Utopia Sprawl/Wild Growth/Hunter's Talent enchantments, creatures, instants, and sorceries from normal trades/cantrips.
- Role peers: Tyrranax Rex is larger and harder to target; Bloodbraid Challenger also recasts from graveyard through escape.
- Failure modes: Graveyard hate can blank recursion; finality counter means it is exiled if it would die.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against counters and midrange; against graveyard decks with hate, treat as normal cast threat first.
Unsummon
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, one-mana creature tempo interaction.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Returns target creature to its owner's hand, buying tempo, saving life, clearing a blocker, or rescuing your own creature when legal.
- Timing: Use at the latest profitable window, often after attacks/blocks are declared or after opponent invests mana in a creature.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs target creature bounce.
- Partners / packages: Clears attacks for Eshki Dragonclaw, Deeproot Wayfinder, Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Bloodbraid Challenger, Tyrranax Rex, and Balustrade Wurm; combines with Lightning Bolt and Burst Lightning to handle recast timing.
- Role peers: Snap costs more but untaps lands; Unsubstantiate can hit a spell or creature; Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft hits opposing nonland permanents.
- Failure modes: Bouncing an enters-effect creature can give opponent value; it does not answer noncreature permanents or spells on the stack.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against tokens, auras/equipment tempo, and expensive creatures; weaker against cheap value creatures.
Spell Pierce
- Deck role: Main, 1 copy, one-mana noncreature spell tax counter.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target noncreature spell unless its controller pays {2}, protecting threats and stopping early combo, removal, sweepers, and planeswalkers.
- Timing: Use while opponent mana is constrained; keep up on turns where Eshki Dragonclaw or another key permanent is exposed.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; targets a noncreature spell on the stack; counters unless controller pays {2}.
- Partners / packages: Protects Eshki Dragonclaw, Hunter's Talent, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Loyal Apprentice, and combat-lethal turns; pairs with Daze, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, It'll Quench Ya!, and Malevolent Hermit.
- Role peers: Daze taxes any spell for {1}; It'll Quench Ya! taxes any spell for {2}; Counterspell hard-counters any spell.
- Failure modes: Cannot target creature spells; late-game opponents may pay {2}; holding it too long can turn it into dead cardboard.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against control, combo, and removal-heavy decks; weaker against creature swarms.
Pyroblast
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, blue-specific stack/permanent bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: One-mana answer for blue fights, either countering a spell if it is blue or destroying a permanent if it is blue.
- Timing: Bring in against blue control, blue tempo, blue combo, or blue commanders; hold for the blue spell/permanent that decides Eshki or finisher survival.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs one chosen blue-specific effect.
- Mode map: Counter mode targets a spell and counters it if it is blue; destroy mode targets a permanent and destroys it if it is blue.
- Partners / packages: Protects Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Hunter's Talent, Bloodbraid Challenger, and Counterspell fights against blue interaction.
- Role peers: Red Elemental Blast requires target blue spell/permanent up front; Veil of Summer protects against blue/black for a turn; Counterspell answers any spell for {U}{U}.
- Failure modes: Pyroblast can target nonblue objects but only works if they are blue when resolving; do not board in without enough blue targets.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium versus visible blue commanders, counters, bounce, and blue permanents; poor against nonblue aggro.
Red Elemental Blast
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, blue-specific stack/permanent bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target blue spell or destroys target blue permanent, giving clean one-mana interaction against blue decks.
- Timing: Bring in when the opponent's public colors or game-one actions show blue spells/permanents that matter; hold for counter wars or decisive blue permanents.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; requires a blue spell for counter mode or blue permanent for destroy mode.
- Mode map: Counter target blue spell on the stack; destroy target blue permanent already on battlefield.
- Partners / packages: Protects Eshki Dragonclaw, Hunter's Talent, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, and stack fights involving Counterspell or Memory Lapse.
- Role peers: Pyroblast is similar but its wording can target a spell/permanent and check blue on resolution; Veil of Summer protects against blue/black but does not destroy permanents.
- Failure modes: Cannot legally target nonblue objects; spending it on a minor blue cantrip may lose to a later counterspell or finisher.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High value against blue control/tempo/combo; leave out against decks with few or no blue objects.
Hydroblast
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, red-specific stack/permanent bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Answers red spells or permanents for one blue mana, stabilizing against burn, red aggro, red commanders, and red removal.
- Timing: Bring in against red pressure or red stack threats; hold for lethal burn, a must-answer red permanent, or red removal aimed at Eshki or a finisher.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs one red-specific effect.
- Mode map: Counter mode targets a spell and counters it if it is red; destroy mode targets a permanent and destroys it if it is red.
- Partners / packages: Protects Eshki Dragonclaw, Siren Stormtamer, Loyal Apprentice, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, and life total alongside Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Snap, Unsummon, and Fury.
- Role peers: Lightning Bolt and Burst Lightning remove small red creatures but cannot counter burn; Counterspell answers any spell for {U}{U}.
- Failure modes: Hydroblast can target nonred objects but only works if they are red on resolution; do not bring it against decks whose red cards are incidental.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium versus burn and red commanders; poor versus nonred control or graveyard combo.
Abrade
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, flexible artifact or creature answer.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; modal utility; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Either deals 3 damage to target creature or destroys target artifact, bridging creature defense and artifact hate.
- Timing: Bring in against artifact decks, equipment, small-creature rushes, and artifact commanders; choose creature mode only when 3 damage changes the board more than artifact destruction.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs one chosen effect.
- Mode map: Creature mode deals 3 damage to target creature; artifact mode destroys target artifact.
- Partners / packages: Complements Cankerbloom, Ancient Grudge, Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Fury, and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft.
- Role peers: Ancient Grudge is stronger against repeated artifacts; Force of Vigor hits up to two artifacts/enchantments; Lightning Bolt hits any target but not artifacts directly.
- Failure modes: Cannot hit enchantments or planeswalkers; three damage may fail against larger creatures.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High priority versus equipment and artifact engines; medium versus creature aggro; low versus spell combo with no targets.
Ancient Grudge
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, artifact attrition bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal; recursion.
- Deck-specific job: Destroys target artifact, then can be flashed back from graveyard for {G} and exiled, giving two artifact answers across turns.
- Timing: Bring in when artifacts are central to mana, combat, prison, or combo; use first cast on the artifact that matters now and save flashback for the next must-answer artifact.
- Inputs / outputs: First cast consumes {1}{R}; flashback consumes {G} from graveyard and exiles the spell after it resolves; each cast destroys target artifact.
- Mode map: Hand cast is red artifact removal; flashback is green graveyard-cast artifact removal, vulnerable to graveyard hate and Grafdigger's Cage-style restrictions.
- Partners / packages: Works with Cankerbloom, Abrade, Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, Prismari Charm, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, and Counterspell for artifact-engine matchups.
- Role peers: Abrade hits one artifact or a creature; Force of Vigor can hit up to two artifacts/enchantments; Cankerbloom is a creature-based artifact/enchantment answer.
- Failure modes: Cannot hit enchantments or creatures unless they are artifacts; graveyard exile can remove flashback access.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus equipment, mana artifacts, artifact creatures, and prison artifacts; poor against low-artifact decks.
Veil of Summer
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, blue/black protection and anti-counter bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; protection/evasion; interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Protects you and permanents from blue and black targeting, makes your spells uncounterable for the turn, and draws a card if an opponent has cast a blue or black spell this turn.
- Timing: Bring in against blue counters, black discard/removal, or blue-black interaction; cast in response to the exchange that decides a protected threat or key spell.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; may draw a card if an opponent has cast blue or black spell this turn; outputs anti-counter shield and hexproof from blue/black for you and permanents.
- Partners / packages: Protects Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Hunter's Talent, Counterspell fights, Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, and high-impact noncreature spells.
- Role peers: Lazotep Plating gives broad hexproof but no anti-counter text; Snakeskin Veil protects one creature; Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast fight blue directly.
- Failure modes: Does not protect from red, white, green, colorless, sweepers, edicts, or non-targeted effects; casting for a card without a blue/black spell this turn will not draw.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against blue/black control and discard; low value against red aggro unless paired with black or blue interaction.
Endurance
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, flash graveyard hate creature.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece; threat/clock; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Flashes in as a 3/4 reach body and puts up to one target player's graveyard on the bottom of their library in random order; can evoke by exiling a green card.
- Timing: Bring in against graveyard combo, recursion, delve, escape, and self-mill; cast or evoke in response to the graveyard becoming a live resource before costs or targets lock you out.
- Inputs / outputs: Hard cast consumes {1}{G}{G}; evoke consumes exile of a green card from hand; outputs graveyard tuck plus a 3/4 reach body only if not sacrificed through evoke.
- Mode map: Hard cast is body plus graveyard interaction; evoke is pitch interaction when mana is unavailable or speed matters.
- Partners / packages: Layers with Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, Grafdigger's Cage, Counterspell, and Memory Lapse.
- Role peers: Tormod's Crypt and Soul-Guide Lantern exile graveyards; Grafdigger's Cage prevents some graveyard/library use but does not clear graveyards.
- Failure modes: Target player chooses no cards? Card says up to one target player puts all cards from their graveyard on bottom; if no target is chosen, no graveyard changes. Evoking away a key green card can damage your own plan.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against graveyard and library recursion; also stabilizes against flyers with reach.
Force of Vigor
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, free-turn artifact/enchantment answer.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Destroys up to two target artifacts and/or enchantments, with an alternate cost on opponents' turns by exiling a green card.
- Timing: Bring in against artifact/enchantment engines, prison pieces, equipment clusters, or combo permanents; use alternate cost when tapping mana would lose tempo or shields.
- Inputs / outputs: Hard cast consumes {2}{G}{G}; if it is not your turn, may exile a green card from hand instead; outputs destruction of up to two target artifacts and/or enchantments.
- Mode map: Hard-cast mode preserves cards but costs four mana; alternate-cost mode preserves mana on non-your turns but spends a green card from hand.
- Partners / packages: Complements Cankerbloom, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Pithing Needle, Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft, Prismari Charm, and Counterspell.
- Role peers: Cankerbloom hits one artifact/enchantment from board; Abrade hits artifact or creature; Ancient Grudge handles artifacts twice.
- Failure modes: Pitching Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Growth Spiral, Cankerbloom, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, or Endurance can cost your own mana/threat plan.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against prison, equipment, and permanent combo; weak against creature or stack decks with few artifacts/enchantments.
Pithing Needle
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, named activated-ability hate bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: As it enters, choose a card name; activated abilities of sources with the chosen name cannot be activated unless they are mana abilities.
- Timing: Bring in when public commander, planeswalker, equipment, artifact engine, sacrifice outlet, land, or combo permanent has a relevant activated ability; choose names from public information or high-confidence matchup reads.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}; outputs a named static restriction on non-mana activated abilities.
- Partners / packages: Supports Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Force of Vigor, Cankerbloom, and Brazen Borrower // Petty Theft by locking abilities while other answers handle spells/permanents.
- Role peers: Cankerbloom, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, and Force of Vigor remove certain permanents; Pithing Needle leaves the permanent in play but stops named activated abilities.
- Failure modes: Naming a card without relevant non-mana activated abilities wastes the card; it does not stop triggered abilities, static abilities, mana abilities, or spells being cast.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High value against activated commanders and planeswalkers; poor against spell-only combo or static/triggered engines.
Grafdigger's Cage
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, graveyard/library access hate bullet.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Prevents creature cards in graveyards and libraries from entering the battlefield and stops players from casting spells from graveyards or libraries.
- Timing: Bring in and deploy early against reanimation, graveyard casting, library casting, or creature-cheat engines; avoid when it only incidentally annoys the opponent and dilutes your plan.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}; outputs a static restriction on creature entry from graveyards/libraries and spell casting from graveyards/libraries.
- Partners / packages: Layers with Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, Endurance, Counterspell, and Memory Lapse.
- Role peers: Tormod's Crypt and Soul-Guide Lantern clear graveyards; Endurance tucks graveyards; Grafdigger's Cage prevents covered access while staying on battlefield.
- Failure modes: It can interfere with your own Bloodbraid Challenger escape from graveyard, Ancient Grudge flashback after sideboarding, and some library-cast effects from cascade if applicable; it does not stop cards moving from hand or normal graveyard-to-hand recursion.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium versus reanimator, flashback/escape-style casting, and library-cast engines; poor against fair aggro or control without covered zone access.
Interaction Priorities
-
Remove snowballing board engines first with Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Fury, Ghostfire Slice, Prismari Charm, or Brazen Borrower before spending them on face damage. Prioritize visible creatures or permanents that generate repeated cards, mana, sacrifice value, combat scaling, or lethal pressure; ignore low-power attackers when your next turn produces a better blocker, Eshki Dragonclaw, or a decisive tempo swing. Card text check required for Ghostfire Slice before assuming damage amount or target class.
-
Counter game-ending or plan-breaking spells first with Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, or Malevolent Hermit. Spend hard permission on sweepers, combo payoffs, protected finishers, must-answer prison pieces, and removal aimed at Eshki Dragonclaw or a committed payoff; spend soft permission early while the opponent is tapped low, not after they can pay. Let fair midrange creatures resolve when Fury, Brazen Borrower, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Unsummon, or combat can handle them.
-
Bounce tempo targets when the returned card loses mana, timing, counters, attachments, or lethal-combat relevance. Use Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, and Brazen Borrower on a blocker only when the attack meaningfully changes the clock or commander damage race; use them defensively when they undo an equipped attacker, reset a token, interrupt a stack object, or buy the turn needed for Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, or Eshki Dragonclaw.
-
Exile graveyards only when the graveyard is a live resource, not merely populated. Use Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, and Armored Scrapgorger against visible recursion, flashback, escape-like, delve-like, reanimation, threshold, or combo pressure; preserve Soul-Guide Lantern as a cantrip when graveyards are irrelevant and the hand needs velocity. Against graveyard decks, shift from tempo-first to containment-first and protect the hate piece if the opponent is forced to answer it.
-
Destroy artifacts or enchantments only when they are actively enabling the opponent’s plan. Use Cankerbloom, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Force of Vigor, or Gruul Charm on mana engines, equipment changing combat math, hate pieces stopping your commander or graveyard plan, and lock pieces; ignore decorative value permanents if racing or holding interaction wins sooner. Card text check required for Gruul Charm mode selection.
-
Bait interaction with replaceable pressure before committing fragile payoffs. Zurgo Bellstriker, Loyal Apprentice, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Searslicer Goblin, Cunning Coyote, Spider-Punk, or a cantrip turn can draw removal or counters; commit Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, or Hunter's Talent after the opponent spends mana or when Siren Stormtamer, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Pawpatch Formation, Spell Pierce, Daze, or Counterspell is available. Card text check required for several named newer cards before relying on exact triggers.
-
Do not invent discard lines. This registered list has no confirmed discard spell from known text in the provided context; if Banishing Betrayal or another legal action presents discard or exile text at runtime, choose the opponent’s highest-impact visible or revealed card according to current role, but otherwise treat hand disruption as unavailable.
Combat And Trading Rules
-
Attack when pressure advances a protected clock without exposing essential engines. Send Zurgo Bellstriker, Loyal Apprentice tokens, Searslicer Goblin, Cunning Coyote, Spider-Punk, Deeproot Wayfinder, Bloodbraid Challenger, Temur Battlecrier, or Eshki Dragonclaw when blocks are unfavorable for the opponent or protection is available; hold back when the creature is your only mana, protection, or engine-adjacent permanent.
-
Trade early against aggressive decks and preserve material against control or combo. Against creature pressure, trade small attackers and mana-neutral creatures to keep life above burn or alpha-strike range; against slow decks, prefer chip damage plus open mana over trading away pressure into a stable board. Do not trade Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, or Cankerbloom if their mana or utility is needed for the next commitment.
-
Protect Eshki Dragonclaw and payoff creatures before protecting incidental attackers. Use Siren Stormtamer, Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, Pawpatch Formation, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Daze, or Malevolent Hermit when the protected permanent determines the race, unlocks future attacks, or survives a removal-heavy turn; let a replaceable early creature die if saving it prevents casting a stronger follow-up.
-
Block to preserve life when the opponent can present lethal or a two-turn clock. Chump with tokens or low-impact creatures before falling into burn range; use Fury, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, or Prismari Charm before damage if removing or bouncing the attacker saves more life than developing. Avoid blocks that lose a key creature to a visible pump line unless the life total demands it.
-
Treat Tyrranax Rex and Balustrade Wurm as stabilization or closing tools, not routine curve fillers. Attack with them when the opponent cannot profitably double-block or when protection/tempo clears a blocker; leave them back if they are the only way to survive the next attack. Card text check required for Balustrade Wurm before assuming evasion, recursion, or cast triggers.
-
Use Atarka's Command, Iroh's Demonstration, Temur Battlecrier, Hunter's Talent, Lavaspur Boots, and Ornery Tumblewagg only after checking legal text and combat math. These cards may change attack incentives, but do not assume pump, haste, counters, prevention, or damage modes unless the rules engine exposes those legal actions. Card text check required for Iroh's Demonstration, Hunter's Talent, Lavaspur Boots, and Ornery Tumblewagg.
-
Shift combat posture by archetype. Race combo when interaction is already held; defend first against aggro until Fury or larger creatures stabilize; pressure control while leaving mana for protection; against artifact, enchantment, or graveyard engines, attack only after preserving Cankerbloom, Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, or sideboard hate needed to keep the opponent from rebuilding.
Selection And Tutor Rules
-
Sequence selection before commitment when the choice can change land, protection, or interaction plans. Use Sleight of Hand, Preordain, Opt, Consider, Brainstorm, Expressive Iteration, and Frantic Search to find missing colors, a cheap threat, protection for Eshki Dragonclaw, or stack interaction before tapping out for a payoff.
-
Delay the land drop when legal selection can reveal a better land decision. Cast Preordain, Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Brainstorm, or Expressive Iteration before playing a land if the hand has multiple possible lands, needs a specific color, or might use Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Growth Spiral, Utopia Sprawl, or Wild Growth differently after seeing cards.
-
Make Brainstorm a setup spell only when the hand has cards worth hiding, a shuffle effect, or urgent protection needs. Pair Brainstorm with Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Sakura-Tribe Elder, or another legal shuffle-like action when available; without a shuffle, put back expensive duplicates, off-curve payoffs, or colors that cannot be cast soon.
-
Prioritize mana smoothing over speculative power in opening turns. Keep or select Command Tower, Dreamroot Cascade, Sulfur Falls, Cinder Glade, Exotic Orchard, Hinterland Harbor, Rootbound Crag, Sodden Verdure, Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Island, Forest, or Mountain according to visible color needs; choose green early when it enables Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, or Growth Spiral.
-
Treat Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, and Sakura-Tribe Elder as pseudo-tutors for color, not generic thinning. Find the basic that unlocks the next two turns, protects Counterspell or Memory Lapse mana, or enables Eshki Dragonclaw colors; do not fetch a decorative color if the hand already lacks the color for a legal high-impact spell.
-
Use Expressive Iteration only after checking land-drop timing and playable exile options. Prefer a line where the exiled card can be used this turn; if a land can be played from exile and land drop is still available, preserve the land drop until after resolution when legal actions permit it.
-
Use Frantic Search as a tempo-positive filter when untapped lands or protection windows matter. Discard excess lands after color stability, expensive cards stranded by mana, redundant graveyard hate in dead matchups, or low-impact creatures when the current role demands interaction; do not discard the only answer to a visible threat.
-
Use Reclaim and Den Protector as recursion selection, not automatic value. Return or recover Counterspell, Lightning Bolt, Fury, protection, a threat, or a sideboard hate card only when that card has a visible next-turn use or prevents a loss. Card text check required before assuming Den Protector timing, evasion, or face-down rules.
-
Bottom or pass cards that do not affect the current role. Against pressure, prefer Fury, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Snap, Unsummon, blockers, or lands over slow payoffs; against control, prefer threats, protection, and permission; against combo, prefer Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Daze, Memory Lapse, Malevolent Hermit, Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, or pressure.
-
Treat Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Hauntwoods Shrieker, Tam, Mindful First-Year, Studious First-Year, Hunter's Talent, Bloodbraid Challenger, Iroh's Demonstration, and Banishing Betrayal as runtime-text-dependent selection cards if legal actions expose choices. Card text check required before assuming tutor, impulse, discover, learn, plot, adventure, or card-advantage behavior.
Priority And Stack Rules
-
Hold priority mana when the opponent can present a decisive spell or removal window. Keep Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Malevolent Hermit, Siren Stormtamer, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, or Pawpatch Formation available when Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, Hunter's Talent, or a protected attack is the plan. Card text check required for Pawpatch Formation before relying on protection or prevention.
-
Counter the spell that changes the game, not the first spell on the stack. Use Counterspell on sweepers, combo payoffs, prison pieces, protected finishers, or removal aimed at the central threat; use Daze, Spell Pierce, Memory Lapse, and Malevolent Hermit while the opponent is constrained on mana or tempo. Let replaceable creatures and low-impact cantrips resolve when a later threat is more dangerous.
-
Respond to removal according to permanent importance. Protect Eshki Dragonclaw or a committed payoff with Siren Stormtamer, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Daze, or Malevolent Hermit; let Zurgo Bellstriker, Searslicer Goblin, Cunning Coyote, Spider-Punk, or a mana creature die when spending protection would leave the decisive turn undefended.
-
Use bounce at the latest profitable legal window. Cast Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, or Brazen Borrower before combat damage to save life, remove a blocker, break an aura/equipment line, or reset a stack object; avoid bouncing a cheap creature in main phase if waiting can force the opponent to spend mana first.
-
Fire burn when it changes combat, planeswalker pressure, lethal math, or stack survival. Use Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Fury, Prismari Charm, Ghostfire Slice, or It'll Quench Ya! on must-kill creatures and lethal targets; do not spend reach into open prevention or protection unless forcing that response benefits the next spell. Card text check required for Ghostfire Slice and It'll Quench Ya!.
-
Activate graveyard hate in response to the graveyard use, not merely at end step. Use Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, and Armored Scrapgorger when the opponent targets, flashes back, reanimates, delves, escapes, or otherwise makes graveyard resources live; use Soul-Guide Lantern for cards only when graveyard pressure is absent.
-
Choose modal and optional stack actions from visible text, not assumptions. Atarka's Command, Prismari Charm, Gruul Charm, Iroh's Demonstration, Banishing Betrayal, Cankerbloom, Force of Vigor, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Hydroblast, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Veil of Summer, and Endurance require runtime mode, target, and timing checks; choose the mode that answers the visible threat or advances the committed line.
-
Preserve combat-trick windows when attacking or blocking matters. After attackers, after blockers, before damage, and after first-strike-like windows if exposed, reassess Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Atarka's Command, Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, Pawpatch Formation, and Prismari Charm against current legal actions and damage math.
-
Pay optional costs only when they protect the main plan or improve the current exchange. If runtime presents optional payments, kicker-like costs, ward/tax payments, or commander-related choices, preserve mana first for Counterspell, protection, removal, or lethal; decline optional value when paying would make the important response illegal.
Sideboard Map
-
Version note: Policy-Compiled Guide 2026-06-17.
-
Add role cards by pressure axis, not by generic card quality. This deck wants to keep functional Temur mana, cheap velocity, permission, protection, and enough threats for Eshki Dragonclaw turns; sideboarding should change which narrow cards matter, not turn the deck into a pile of reactive one-for-ones. Because this is a Commander-family deck with a 100-card main deck and 10-card registered sideboard, every swap must preserve exact registered names and avoid shaving too much mana, velocity, or threat density.
-
Add role cards: Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast against blue control, blue tempo, counter-heavy combo, and blue commanders whose presence makes protecting Eshki Dragonclaw or a finisher difficult. Use them as stack interaction first and permanent interaction second, because spending one red mana to force through Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, or a protected combat step is often worth more than answering a replaceable blue permanent. When bad: leave them low priority against creature decks with few blue cards, artifact decks with no blue stack fights, and red or green aggro where they may have no legal target.
-
Add role cards: Hydroblast against red aggro, burn-heavy tempo, red commanders, and red removal decks that pressure small creatures and punish tapped-out Eshki Dragonclaw turns. Use Hydroblast to stop the red spell that changes combat or life total math, not the first red spell available; preserve it for lethal burn, a must-answer red permanent, or a removal spell aimed at Eshki Dragonclaw or a committed payoff. When bad: reduce priority against nonred control, graveyard combo, artifact engines without red threats, or blue decks where Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast are the cleaner fight.
-
Add role cards: Abrade against artifact decks, equipment-centric pressure, small creature rushes, and commanders backed by cheap artifact utility. Use Abrade as flexible bridge interaction when Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Fury, Snap, Unsummon, and Unsubstantiate are not enough to contain the board. When bad: reduce priority against spell-combo, draw-go control with few targets, and creature decks whose key bodies are too large for the visible legal mode.
-
Add role cards: Ancient Grudge against artifact engines, equipment, mana artifacts, artifact creatures, and decks where a single artifact answer is not enough. Treat Ancient Grudge as a resource advantage card if the graveyard half is legally available, but do not assume flashback timing or target legality unless the rules engine exposes the action. When bad: reduce priority against low-artifact creature decks, graveyard-hate mirrors where the flashback half is unreliable, and blue control where stack interaction matters more than artifact attrition.
-
Add role cards: Force of Vigor against artifact/enchantment engines, prison pieces, equipment clusters, and permanent-based combo. Use Force of Vigor when tapping mana would lose tempo or shields, but treat the pitch cost as a real strategic payment because green cards such as Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Growth Spiral, Armored Scrapgorger, Cankerbloom, Den Protector, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, and Undermountain Adventurer can be part of the deck's mana and threat plan. When bad: reduce priority when there are few visible artifacts or enchantments, when the hand cannot spare green cards, or when the matchup is decided mostly on the stack.
-
Add role cards: Veil of Summer against blue or black interaction, discard, counterspell-heavy decks, and removal that threatens a protected Eshki Dragonclaw or finisher turn. Use Veil of Summer as a commitment shield when pushing through Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Hunter's Talent, or a multi-spell sequence; do not spend it for minor card flow if the opponent can still answer the decisive spell. When bad: reduce priority against red creature decks, artifact prison without blue or black interaction, and green creature mirrors where it has no exposed legal function.
-
Add role cards: Endurance against graveyard combo, recursion engines, self-mill, reanimator, delve-like resource plans, and control decks that rely on graveyard loops. Use Endurance as either interaction or a body according to legal actions and visible pressure; prioritize stopping the graveyard event that would win or bury the game over simply lowering an opponent's graveyard count. When bad: reduce priority against decks with empty graveyards, low recursion, or exile-based threats where Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, and Armored Scrapgorger already cover the visible axis.
-
Add role cards: Grafdigger's Cage against graveyard-casting, reanimation, library-casting, and creature-cheating plans when the rules text applies to the opponent's visible engine. Use it early when the opponent's deck needs the restricted zone access before combat matters; avoid bringing it in just because graveyards exist if the opposing plan does not use the covered zone movement. When bad: reduce priority against fair aggro, spell control without graveyard casting, and artifact-removal-heavy opponents where Soul-Guide Lantern or Tormod's Crypt is lower exposure.
-
Add role cards: Pithing Needle against commanders, planeswalkers, equipment, artifact engines, sacrifice outlets, lands, or combo permanents with visible activated abilities. Name only from public information or an archetype read that the pilot guide has explicitly endorsed; if the engine requires a name before the relevant permanent is visible, prefer a high-certainty commander or known engine card only when matchup context supports it. When bad: reduce priority against mostly triggered/static decks, spell combo without activated permanents, and creature decks where drawing a blocker or removal spell matters more.
-
Reduce main-deck emphasis: Tormod's Crypt and Soul-Guide Lantern when the opposing deck does not use graveyards and sideboard cards must answer artifacts, red pressure, blue permission, or permanent engines instead. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Zurgo Bellstriker, Searslicer Goblin, Cunning Coyote, Spider-Punk, or other low-impact pressure when the matchup turns into a long stack fight and sideboard interaction is needed. Reduce main-deck emphasis: expensive or text-dependent cards such as Balustrade Wurm, Tyrranax Rex, Iroh's Demonstration, Banishing Betrayal, or Hunter's Talent only when the matchup punishes tapping out or when card text checks show they are too slow.

-
Against blue interactive decks, sideboard into a protected threat-and-stack posture. Add role cards: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Veil of Summer. Reduce main-deck emphasis on narrow graveyard hate and one-mana attackers that do not survive or scale. Keep Counterspell, Daze, Spell Pierce, Memory Lapse, Malevolent Hermit, Siren Stormtamer, Lazotep Plating, and Snakeskin Veil because the game is decided by who resolves and protects the central spell.
-
Against red pressure, sideboard into survival first and commander second. Add role cards: Hydroblast and Abrade, with Veil of Summer only when red is paired with black or blue interaction. Reduce main-deck emphasis on slow card selection and graveyard hate that does not affect life total. Keep cheap blockers, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Fury, Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, and mana creatures when they change damage races.
-
Against artifacts or enchantments, sideboard into high-density permanent answers without abandoning tempo. Add role cards: Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Force of Vigor, and Pithing Needle. Reduce main-deck emphasis on burn that cannot hit the relevant permanent, bounce that only delays a cheap recast, and low-impact attackers. Keep Cankerbloom because it overlaps with this axis, and use Force of Vigor only when the pitch cost is justified by the visible board or stack.
-
Against graveyard decks, sideboard into timed hate plus pressure. Add role cards: Endurance and Grafdigger's Cage, with Veil of Summer when the opponent protects the graveyard line through blue or black interaction. Reduce main-deck emphasis on small attackers that do not speed the clock enough and removal with no visible targets. Coordinate Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, Endurance, and Grafdigger's Cage so one hate card forces awkward play and the next answers the commitment.
-
Against unknown opponents, prefer flexible sideboard cards only when the revealed commander or early permanents justify them. Abrade, Veil of Summer, Pithing Needle, and Endurance can be high-ceiling but should not enter blindly over functional mana, cantrips, or cheap interaction unless public information points to their axis.
Matchup Guidance
-
Aggro: Prioritize survival mana and board contact before speculative velocity. Keep hands with at least two usable mana sources or one land plus Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Sakura-Tribe Elder, or Armored Scrapgorger, then spend Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Unsummon, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Fury, and cheap creatures to reduce immediate damage. Add role cards: Hydroblast against red pressure, Abrade when artifacts or small creatures matter, and Force of Vigor only when an artifact or enchantment engine is what makes combat unwinnable. Reduce main-deck emphasis on Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, and slow selection when the opponent is attacking life total instead of graveyard or stack. Card text check required for Cunning Coyote, Searslicer Goblin, Spider-Punk, Hauntwoods Shrieker, and Ornery Tumblewagg before treating them as combat stabilizers rather than pressure pieces.
-
Burn: Treat life total as the central resource and decline cute tap-out lines that do not reduce lethal reach. Use Counterspell, Daze, Spell Pierce, Memory Lapse, Lazotep Plating, Siren Stormtamer, Malevolent Hermit, Hydroblast, and Veil of Summer only when they counter or blank damage, discard, or removal that changes the race. Add role cards: Hydroblast first, Abrade for red artifact pressure or small creatures, and Veil of Summer only when black or blue interaction is part of the burn shell. Reduce main-deck emphasis on Expressive Iteration and Frantic Search when tapping mana for card flow exposes a lethal window.
-
Control: Shift from creature chip damage into protected threat commitment. Use Brainstorm, Preordain, Opt, Consider, Sleight of Hand, Expressive Iteration, Growth Spiral, and Frantic Search to hit land drops and sculpt a turn where Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, Hunter's Talent, or a multi-spell burst can be backed by permission or protection. Add role cards: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Veil of Summer against blue or black interaction. Reduce main-deck emphasis on Tormod's Crypt and Soul-Guide Lantern unless the control deck visibly uses graveyard recursion. Do not run Eshki Dragonclaw into open interaction just because commander tax is still low; wait when legal mana plus Counterspell, Daze, Spell Pierce, Memory Lapse, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Siren Stormtamer, Malevolent Hermit, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, or Veil of Summer can protect the commitment.
-
Tempo: Win the mana exchange instead of chasing every threat. Respect a low land count from the opponent by using Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Memory Lapse, Daze, and Spell Pierce to turn their tapped mana into lost turns. Add role cards: Pyroblast or Red Elemental Blast against blue tempo, Hydroblast against red tempo, and Veil of Summer against blue-black disruption. Reduce main-deck emphasis on expensive threats that cannot be protected on the same turn. Prefer playing a land before cantrips when the available legal line needs exact blue or green mana for interaction.
-
Midrange: Preserve cards that create two-for-one pressure and avoid trading premium interaction for low-impact bodies. Use Deeproot Wayfinder, Den Protector, Bloodbraid Challenger, Undermountain Adventurer, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, and Eshki Dragonclaw as conditional card-advantage or closing tools only after visible removal and combat pressure are checked. Card text check required for Deeproot Wayfinder, Den Protector, Bloodbraid Challenger, Undermountain Adventurer, Balustrade Wurm, and Eshki Dragonclaw before assuming recursion, cascade, initiative, or payoff details. Add role cards: Veil of Summer against black removal/discard, Endurance against graveyard value, Abrade against artifact creatures or equipment, Force of Vigor against permanent engines, and Pithing Needle against activated engines.
-
Combo: Keep disruption plus a clock, not disruption alone. Prioritize hands with early blue interaction, fast mana, and either Eshki Dragonclaw pressure or cheap threats such as Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Loyal Apprentice, Searslicer Goblin, Cunning Coyote, Spider-Punk, or Brazen Borrower. Use Counterspell, Daze, Spell Pierce, Memory Lapse, Unsubstantiate, Prismari Charm, Gruul Charm, Atarka's Command, Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, and Cankerbloom according to the visible combo axis. Add role cards: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Veil of Summer, Endurance, Grafdigger's Cage, Force of Vigor, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, or Pithing Needle only when public information identifies the matching stack, graveyard, artifact, enchantment, or activated-ability dependency.
-
Big mana: Punish setup turns and save counters for payoff spells, not every ramp action. Pressure early with one- and two-mana creatures while holding Memory Lapse, Counterspell, Daze, Spell Pierce, Unsubstantiate, or Brazen Borrower for the first threat that invalidates combat. Use Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Growth Spiral, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Armored Scrapgorger, and land sequencing to keep pace without giving up stack coverage. Add role cards: Pithing Needle for activated mana engines or lands when legally nameable from public information, Force of Vigor or Ancient Grudge for artifact acceleration, and Veil of Summer when their payoff interaction is black or blue dependent.
-
Graveyard: Time hate for the commitment, not for cosmetic graveyard reduction. Use Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, Cankerbloom when relevant, Reclaim when recovering your own key resource, and Endurance or Grafdigger's Cage after sideboarding to interrupt the exact visible recursion, casting, or reanimation line. Add role cards: Endurance and Grafdigger's Cage, with Veil of Summer if the opponent protects the graveyard line through blue or black interaction. Reduce main-deck emphasis on small attackers and burn with no relevant targets when the graveyard line is faster than combat. Do not activate Tormod's Crypt or Soul-Guide Lantern before the opponent commits a target, cost, or stack object unless the rules engine shows that waiting loses the window.
-
Artifact/enchantment: Identify whether the permanent is a lock piece, mana source, equipment, combo engine, or value engine before spending removal. Main-deck answers include Cankerbloom, Prismari Charm if legal, Gruul Charm if legal, Brazen Borrower, Unsubstantiate, Unsummon, Snap, and counterspells before resolution. Add role cards: Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Force of Vigor, and Pithing Needle. Reduce main-deck emphasis on Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, and Ghostfire Slice when they cannot answer the permanent that matters. Card text check required for Ghostfire Slice, It'll Quench Ya!, Banishing Betrayal, Iroh's Demonstration, and Pawpatch Formation before assigning them artifact, enchantment, or removal duties.
-
Go-wide: Defend life total by narrowing combat, then turn the corner with larger bodies or evasive pressure. Use Fury, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Gruul Charm if legal, and blockers from Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Cankerbloom, Loyal Apprentice, Den Protector, and Undermountain Adventurer to prevent snowball damage. Add role cards: Abrade against token-support artifacts or small creatures and Force of Vigor against anthem artifacts/enchantments. Avoid attacking with the only needed blocker under a short clock unless the legal attack creates lethal or removes a higher-pressure threat.
-
Single-threat: Answer the threat cleanly or race with protection held up. Use Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Unsummon, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Prismari Charm if legal, and Snakeskin Veil or Lazotep Plating to protect your counter-threat. Add role cards: Pithing Needle for commanders or permanents with activated abilities, Hydroblast against red threats, Pyroblast or Red Elemental Blast against blue threats, and Veil of Summer against black or blue removal. Do not spend bounce on a commander if commander tax or tempo will not matter and a later counterspell is required.
-
Removal-heavy: Sequence redundant bodies before the decisive engine and force the opponent to answer the wrong threat. Lead with Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Loyal Apprentice, Deeproot Wayfinder, Searslicer Goblin, Spider-Punk, or Cunning Coyote when they tax spot removal, then commit Eshki Dragonclaw, Hunter's Talent, Tyrranax Rex, or Balustrade Wurm with Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, Siren Stormtamer, Malevolent Hermit, Counterspell, Daze, Spell Pierce, Memory Lapse, or Veil of Summer available. Add role cards: Veil of Summer and Endurance when removal decks lean on black disruption or graveyard attrition. Reduce main-deck emphasis on fragile low-impact creatures only when they no longer trade for cards or damage.
Specific Matchup Notes
-
General/archetype-only: Exact opponents are absent, so revealed cards, legal actions, commander identity, and public board state override every archetype assumption. Treat these notes as routing cues for sideboard roles and priority targets, not as certainty about hidden hands or deck contents. In Commander-family games, commander identity is a public strategic signal, but do not let it override visible mana, board pressure, or the rules engine's legal action set.
-
Blue control or tempo: Force the opponent to answer cheap pressure before committing Eshki Dragonclaw or a larger closer. Add role cards: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Veil of Summer when blue or black stack interaction is public or strongly implied by revealed cards. Priority targets are card-advantage spells, counter wars over Eshki Dragonclaw, and bounce or removal aimed at the one protected threat. Preserve Spell Pierce, Daze, Memory Lapse, and Counterspell for spells that change the race or stop the deck from establishing pressure.
-
Red aggro or burn: Protect life total before sculpting a perfect hand. Add role cards: Hydroblast and Abrade when red creatures, burn, artifacts, or equipment are visible. Priority targets are haste attackers, repeatable damage sources, and lethal burn on the stack. Use Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Unsummon, Snap, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Fury, and blockers to buy time, then close with Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Eshki Dragonclaw, or protected creature pressure. Card text check required for Ghostfire Slice, It'll Quench Ya!, and Pawpatch Formation before assigning them removal or prevention roles.
-
Graveyard combo or recursion: Hold graveyard hate until the opponent commits a target, cost, stack object, or recursion action unless waiting clearly loses the window. Add role cards: Endurance and Grafdigger's Cage; add Veil of Summer when blue or black protection is visible. Priority targets are reanimation spells, graveyard-cast permissions, and sacrifice-recursion engines. Use Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, Cankerbloom if legal, and Counterspell effects as layered disruption.
-
Artifact or enchantment engines: Identify the permanent type and engine role before spending the narrow answer. Add role cards: Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Force of Vigor, and Pithing Needle. Priority targets are mana engines, lock pieces, equipment that changes combat math, and activated abilities that repeatedly generate material. Use Cankerbloom, Prismari Charm if legal, Gruul Charm if legal, Brazen Borrower, Unsubstantiate, Unsummon, Snap, and counters before resolution.
-
Big mana or tap-out midrange: Attack setup turns while reserving stack interaction for payoff spells. Add role cards: Pithing Needle for public activated engines, Ancient Grudge or Force of Vigor for artifact acceleration, and Veil of Summer against black or blue disruption. Priority targets are payoff creatures, planeswalkers, sweepers, and mana engines that let them skip beyond Counterspell or Memory Lapse windows.
-
Creature midrange: Trade tempo for board position only when the exchange preserves a protected follow-up. Add role cards: Veil of Summer against black removal or discard, Endurance against graveyard value, Abrade against artifact creatures or equipment, and Pithing Needle against a public activated engine. Priority targets are cards that convert combat into repeated value rather than ordinary bodies. Keep enough cheap interaction and blockers that Eshki Dragonclaw does not enter a board where it immediately has to rescue a lost race.
-
Combo with stack dependency: Keep a clock and use one-mana permission to compress the opponent's turn. Add role cards: Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast for blue cantrips, counters, and commanders; Veil of Summer for blue or black protection; and Pithing Needle only when the combo is built around a visible activated permanent. Priority targets are tutors, payoff spells, and protection spells, not every setup cantrip unless mana efficiency makes the trade decisive.
-
Combo with permanent dependency: Pressure life total while holding answers for the permanent that actually enables the win. Add role cards: Force of Vigor, Ancient Grudge, Abrade, Pithing Needle, Grafdigger's Cage, or Endurance according to whether the engine uses artifacts, enchantments, activated abilities, graveyards, or library access. Priority targets are lock pieces, mana engines, sacrifice outlets, and restricted-zone enablers. Do not over-sideboard into narrow answers if the opponent can simply pivot into fair combat.
-
Go-wide boards: Respect combat math first. Add role cards: Abrade against small artifact creatures or equipment, Force of Vigor against anthem artifacts or enchantments, and Hydroblast when red attackers or burn define the race. Priority targets are effects that multiply damage or invalidate blockers. Avoid attacking with Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Cankerbloom, or other needed blockers when the opponent's next attack would force a losing race.
-
Single commander threat: Determine whether the opposing commander is best answered by stack interaction, bounce, combat, or Pithing Needle. Add role cards: Pithing Needle for activated abilities, Hydroblast for red commanders, Pyroblast or Red Elemental Blast for blue commanders, and Veil of Summer when black or blue removal protects the commander plan. Priority targets are the commander spell on the stack, equipment or auras that change combat math, and activated abilities that generate repeatable advantage.
Risk Summary
-
Mana risk: Three colors plus singleton lands make early sequencing fragile. Prioritize hands with blue for interaction, green for Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Growth Spiral, and red for Lightning Bolt or Burst Lightning only when the matchup requires immediate removal.
-
Matchup risk: The deck can draw the wrong half against linear opponents. Do not keep hands that are only cantrips and closers against aggro, only removal against control, or only pressure against combo unless the visible matchup context makes that plan sufficient.
-
Draw risk: Brainstorm, Preordain, Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Frantic Search, Expressive Iteration, and Growth Spiral improve texture but do not replace missing colors or board presence by themselves. Use selection to fix the current bottleneck, not to chase abstract value.
-
Over-sideboarding risk: Sideboard cards are powerful but narrow. Add Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Veil of Summer, Endurance, Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, or Grafdigger's Cage only when public information identifies the axis they answer.
-
Graveyard risk: Tormod's Crypt and Soul-Guide Lantern can be fired too early. Wait for the rules engine to expose a relevant graveyard decision, stack object, or target unless an immediate activation is the only legal survival line.
-
Sweeper/removal risk: Committing Eshki Dragonclaw, Loyal Apprentice, Searslicer Goblin, Cunning Coyote, Spider-Punk, and utility creatures into open removal can strand the deck without pressure. Sequence redundant threats first and hold Snakeskin Veil, Lazotep Plating, Siren Stormtamer, Malevolent Hermit, or stack interaction for the threat that actually wins.
-
Closer risk: Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, and Eshki Dragonclaw must be timed around tempo loss and visible answers. Card text check required before assuming exact resilience, initiative, recursion, or combat payoff details.
-
Interaction risk: Cheap counters lose value if held too long. Spend Daze and Spell Pierce while they still constrain mana; save Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Unsubstantiate, and Brazen Borrower for spells or permanents that alter lethal, combo, or lock timing.
-
Sequencing risk: Cantrips, fetch effects, enchant-land mana, and commander deployment create many order traps. Resolve land drops, Utopia Sprawl or Wild Growth targets, Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, and protection mana before taking a line that taps off the required color.
Test Feedback Checklist
-
Deciding factor: Record whether the game was decided by early pressure, protected Eshki Dragonclaw, a resolved closer, graveyard disruption, stack interaction, mana failure, or a stranded hand. Name the exact cards that produced the turning point, especially Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, Hunter's Talent, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Lightning Bolt, or Burst Lightning.
-
Mulligans: Note whether the keep had functional green, blue, and red sequencing for the actual matchup. Flag hands that relied on Brainstorm, Preordain, Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, Expressive Iteration, or Frantic Search to fix missing mana without enough time.
-
Mana: Track whether Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Armored Scrapgorger, Growth Spiral, Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, Command Tower, Dreamroot Cascade, Sulfur Falls, Cinder Glade, Hinterland Harbor, Rootbound Crag, Exotic Orchard, or Sodden Verdure supported the needed colors on time. Mark every game where a protection spell, counterspell, or removal spell was stranded by color.
-
Velocity: Check whether cantrips found the current bottleneck rather than abstract card quality. Ask whether Brainstorm was paired with Fabled Passage or Ash Barrens, whether Expressive Iteration was cast with enough mana to use the exiled card, and whether Frantic Search improved a real turn plan.
-
Engines: Record whether Eshki Dragonclaw, Hunter's Talent, Loyal Apprentice, Searslicer Goblin, Deeproot Wayfinder, Tam, Mindful First-Year, Studious First-Year, Hauntwoods Shrieker, or Ornery Tumblewagg generated material before dying. Card text check required for exact engine claims involving newer or unfamiliar cards.
-
Removal and interaction: Identify whether Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Fury, Prismari Charm, Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Gruul Charm, Ghostfire Slice, It'll Quench Ya!, Pawpatch Formation, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Malevolent Hermit, Siren Stormtamer, Lazotep Plating, or Snakeskin Veil answered the right threat at the right window.
-
Sideboard: Record whether Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Veil of Summer, Endurance, Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, and Grafdigger's Cage had visible targets or stack windows. Flag every narrow sideboard card that sat in hand without a public axis to answer.
-
Closing: Ask whether the deck converted stabilization into a win quickly enough. Track missed lethal, delayed attacks with Eshki Dragonclaw or utility creatures, and games where Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Bloodbraid Challenger, Spider-Punk, Cunning Coyote, Temur Battlecrier, or Zurgo Bellstriker could have shortened the clock.
-
Role and mistakes: Record the role chosen each game, then mark whether later actions followed it. Flag over-defensive play against combo, over-aggressive play into removal, early graveyard-hate activations with Tormod's Crypt or Soul-Guide Lantern, and protection held for a creature that did not matter.
First Tuning Questions
-
Mana slots: Did the deck lose more games to color access than to card quality? If yes, ask whether the land mix and early green package need more untapped green/blue consistency before adding more expensive threats.
-
One-mana pressure: Did Zurgo Bellstriker, Kellan, Planar Trailblazer, Siren Stormtamer, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Sleight of Hand, Opt, Consider, and Lightning Bolt create enough turn-one agency, or did the deck often start behind?
-
Aggro plan: Did Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Fury, Snap, Unsummon, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and early creatures stabilize red or creature matchups, or should main-deck emphasis move toward more cheap removal and blockers?
-
Control plan: Did Daze, Spell Pierce, Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Malevolent Hermit, Siren Stormtamer, Lazotep Plating, Snakeskin Veil, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Veil of Summer protect the right threat, or did the deck need more resilient closers and fewer fragile setup cards?
-
Graveyard plan: Did Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Armored Scrapgorger, Cankerbloom, Endurance, and Grafdigger's Cage cover graveyard opponents without diluting pressure? If not, decide whether the issue was timing, sideboard density, or lack of closing speed after disruption.
-
Artifact/enchantment plan: Did Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Force of Vigor, Cankerbloom, Prismari Charm, Gruul Charm, Brazen Borrower, Unsubstantiate, and Pithing Needle line up against public engines, or were answers too narrow for the field?
-
Closer mix: Did Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, Eshki Dragonclaw, Hunter's Talent, Bloodbraid Challenger, and Spider-Punk end games, or did they strand in hand while the opponent recovered?
-
Role conflict: Did cheap attackers such as Zurgo Bellstriker, Cunning Coyote, Searslicer Goblin, Loyal Apprentice, and Temur Battlecrier support the control plan, or did they pull the deck into races it could not finish?
-
Card-text uncertainty: Which games hinged on Ghostfire Slice, It'll Quench Ya!, Pawpatch Formation, Hauntwoods Shrieker, Tam, Mindful First-Year, Studious First-Year, Pinnacle Monk, or Banishing Betrayal? Prioritize exact text validation for any card that affected mulligans, interaction windows, or lethal math.
Veles Tactical Policy
Policy: Opening Hand Role Gate
Priority: High Decision families: mulligan Cards: Eshki Dragonclaw; Utopia Sprawl; Wild Growth; Llanowar Elves; Elvish Mystic; Sakura-Tribe Elder; Counterspell; Lightning Bolt; Preordain; Brainstorm; Opt; Consider Phase windows: pregame, opening hand, mulligan bottoming Runtime cues: prompt:mulligan; hand; visible commander Use when: deciding keep, mulligan, or bottom cards from a hand with known card identities. Avoid when: Forge presents only deterministic post-mulligan bottom counts with no strategic choice. Instructions: Keep hands with two or more mana sources and a turn-one or turn-two action; prioritize green source plus acceleration, blue source plus selection/permission, or red source plus removal against creature pressure. Ship one-land hands without cantrip plus green/blue access, slow hands with only expensive cards, and hands that cannot cast any nonland before turn three. Bottom redundant expensive threats before bottoming cheap mana, cantrips, or one piece of interaction. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Early Mana Enchantment Setup

Instructions: Put Utopia Sprawl or Wild Growth on a land that remains available across future turns, then choose the color missing from the visible hand’s next two turns. Favor blue when Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Frantic Search, Expressive Iteration, or Eshki Dragonclaw sequencing requires it; favor red when removal or pressure is stranded; favor green when Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Cankerbloom, Hunter's Talent, or commander tax is the bottleneck. Avoid when: visible opponent pressure demands Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Unsummon, or Spell Pierce be held up instead. Instructions: Lead on mana creatures when the hand contains three-plus mana plays or Eshki Dragonclaw acceleration; lead on Siren Stormtamer when protecting a future commander or engine matters; lead on Zurgo Bellstriker when the opponent is slow and life-total pressure is the clearest plan. Do not deploy Tormod's Crypt or Soul-Guide Lantern early unless graveyard text is already public or mana would otherwise go unused. Delay commander deployment when leaving up Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Daze, Spell Pierce, Siren Stormtamer, Lazotep Plating, or Snakeskin Veil is worth more than adding a creature. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Permission Spend Gate
Priority: High Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Counterspell; Memory Lapse; Daze; Spell Pierce; Malevolent Hermit; Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Hydroblast; Veil of Summer Phase windows: opponent spell on stack, own threat on stack, end step Runtime cues: action:cast Counterspell; action:cast Memory Lapse; action:cast Daze; action:cast Spell Pierce Use when: a counter, blast, or protection response is legal against a visible stack object. Avoid when: the stack object is low impact, cannot resolve before the opponent’s next decisive turn, or spending interaction exposes a stronger visible threat. Instructions: Counter cards that stop Eshki Dragonclaw, remove the protected threat, assemble a combo, lock mana, or create lethal pressure. Spend Daze and Spell Pierce early while they tax mana; save Counterspell and Memory Lapse for high-impact spells unless tempo loss will decide the race. Use Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast only on blue objects or legal blue targets, and use Hydroblast only on red objects or legal red targets. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Removal And Bounce Triage
Priority: High Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Lightning Bolt; Burst Lightning; Fury; Snap; Unsummon; Unsubstantiate; Brazen Borrower; Prismari Charm; Gruul Charm; Abrade; Ancient Grudge; Force of Vigor; Cankerbloom Phase windows: combat, opponent main phase, end step, own main phase before attacks Runtime cues: action:cast Lightning Bolt; action:cast Burst Lightning; action:cast Snap; action:cast Unsummon; action:cast Brazen Borrower Use when: a damage, bounce, artifact, or enchantment answer is legal. Avoid when: the target does not change lethal math, engine access, commander safety, or next-turn mana. Instructions: Remove creatures that kill this turn, block the key attack, carry equipment or counters, or generate repeatable advantage. Bounce expensive permanents when the opponent cannot replay them efficiently. Use Abrade, Ancient Grudge, Force of Vigor, Cankerbloom, Prismari Charm, or Gruul Charm on artifacts/enchantments only when the public permanent matters now or before the next untap. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Deterministic Bolt Finish
Priority: High Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Lightning Bolt; Burst Lightning Phase windows: any legal instant-speed window, own main phase with lethal available Runtime cues: action:target opponent Lightning Bolt; action:target opponent Burst Lightning Use when: the legal action text targets opponent, opponent life is at or below the visible damage amount, and no required additional target or cost choice remains hidden. Avoid when: a visible prevention, replacement, protection, or tax prompt is pending. Instructions: Choose the opponent-targeting lethal action and submit required visible mana payments that preserve no further choices. If multiple lethal burn actions are legal, use the lowest mana line first. Pilot skill floor: low No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Cantrip And Velocity Sequencing
Priority: Medium Decision families: selection; mana Cards: Brainstorm; Preordain; Sleight of Hand; Opt; Consider; Expressive Iteration; Frantic Search; Growth Spiral Phase windows: main phase before land drop, end step, postcombat Runtime cues: action:cast Brainstorm; action:cast Preordain; action:cast Expressive Iteration; action:cast Frantic Search Use when: a selection spell is legal and card order, land drop, or mana use can change the turn. Avoid when: casting selection removes interaction mana before an opponent’s decisive stack window. Instructions: Use cheap selection before land drop when it can find missing colors, land, or one-mana interaction. Pair Brainstorm with Fabled Passage or Ash Barrens when possible. Cast Expressive Iteration only when the exiled card can be played this turn or the mana and land-drop context supports it. Treat Frantic Search as a tempo spell only when untapping lands enables another legal action. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Reclaim And Graveyard Selection Gate
Priority: Medium Decision families: selection; priority Cards: Reclaim; Den Protector; Endurance; Soul-Guide Lantern; Tormod's Crypt; Armored Scrapgorger; Grafdigger's Cage Phase windows: end step, upkeep, main phase, graveyard interaction window Runtime cues: action:cast Reclaim; action:activate Soul-Guide Lantern; action:activate Tormod's Crypt; action:cast Endurance Use when: a graveyard card, graveyard hate action, or recursion action is legal. Avoid when: graveyard contents do not show a public target relevant to the current race, combo, or resource bottleneck. Instructions: Use Reclaim on the exact card needed for the next draw step, such as a lethal spell, protection spell, land, or counter. Hold Tormod's Crypt and Soul-Guide Lantern until the opponent commits graveyard resources or a trigger/permission window makes exiling necessary. Card text check required for Den Protector and Armored Scrapgorger choices; route target and activation choices through reasoning. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Combat Pressure And Trades
Priority: Medium Decision families: combat Cards: Eshki Dragonclaw; Zurgo Bellstriker; Loyal Apprentice; Searslicer Goblin; Cunning Coyote; Spider-Punk; Temur Battlecrier; Tyrranax Rex; Balustrade Wurm; Undermountain Adventurer Phase windows: beginning of combat, declare attackers, declare blockers, combat damage Runtime cues: prompt:declare attackers; prompt:declare blockers; visible attackers; visible blockers Use when: attacks or blocks require choosing among multiple legal combat actions. Avoid when: exactly one legal no-attack or no-block action is presented and no instant-speed trick is available. Instructions: Attack when the swing advances lethal pressure without giving up a required blocker or engine. Block to preserve life against short clocks, especially when a bounce, burn, or protection spell can change damage math. Do not trade Eshki Dragonclaw, mana creatures, or protection creatures for low-impact attackers unless survival requires it. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Protection Response Gate
Priority: High Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Siren Stormtamer; Lazotep Plating; Snakeskin Veil; Veil of Summer; Daze; Spell Pierce; Counterspell; Memory Lapse Phase windows: opponent targets own permanent, own spell is contested, removal on stack Runtime cues: action:activate Siren Stormtamer; action:cast Lazotep Plating; action:cast Snakeskin Veil; action:cast Veil of Summer Use when: a visible spell or ability threatens Eshki Dragonclaw, a closing threat, or a protected engine. Avoid when: the threatened permanent is replaceable and interaction is needed for a known stronger stack object. Instructions: Protect Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Hunter's Talent, or a lethal attacker before protecting incidental pressure. Use Veil of Summer only when the legal action text and stack colors make it applicable. Prefer cheap protection over hard counters when it leaves mana for the same turn. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Tapout Finisher Gate
Priority: High Decision families: priority; mana; combat Cards: Tyrranax Rex; Balustrade Wurm; Undermountain Adventurer; Hunter's Talent; Bloodbraid Challenger; Spider-Punk Phase windows: main phase after land drop, postcombat main phase Runtime cues: action:cast Tyrranax Rex; action:cast Balustrade Wurm; action:cast Undermountain Adventurer; action:cast Hunter's Talent Use when: an expensive threat, engine, or closer is legal and spending most mana is required. Avoid when: holding Counterspell, Memory Lapse, Unsubstantiate, Brazen Borrower, or removal prevents an immediate loss or stops a visible combo. Instructions: Tap out for a closer when the opponent’s visible board cannot punish the shields-down turn and the threat shortens the clock more than passing with interaction. Prefer postcombat deployment when attacks are already safe and the new permanent is not needed for combat. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Sideboard Axis Selection
Priority: High Decision families: sideboard; plan_selection Cards: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Hydroblast; Abrade; Ancient Grudge; Veil of Summer; Endurance; Force of Vigor; Pithing Needle; Grafdigger's Cage Phase windows: sideboard lock, between games Runtime cues: sideboard; match stage; revealed commander; opponent colors; public permanents; previous game log Use when: choosing a legal post-game configuration from registered sideboard cards and main-deck cuts. Avoid when: the opponent's public information does not identify a stack, color, graveyard, artifact, enchantment, or activated-ability axis strongly enough to justify dilution. Instructions: Choose sideboard cards by the opponent's demonstrated axis. Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast answer blue stack fights. Hydroblast answers red pressure and burn. Veil of Summer protects against blue or black interaction. Abrade, Ancient Grudge, and Force of Vigor answer artifact or enchantment engines. Endurance and Grafdigger's Cage answer graveyard or library-access engines. Pithing Needle requires a high-confidence activated ability from public information or an explicitly endorsed commander read. Preserve Temur mana, cheap velocity, permission, protection, and enough threats for Eshki Dragonclaw turns. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Sideboard Lock Integrity
Priority: High Decision families: sideboard; validation; lock_submission Cards: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Hydroblast; Abrade; Ancient Grudge; Veil of Summer; Endurance; Force of Vigor; Pithing Needle; Grafdigger's Cage Phase windows: sideboard lock Runtime cues: submit_sideboard; validation_error; registered_100_plus_10; exact_card_names Use when: submitting or auditing a between-game sideboard configuration. Avoid when: any proposed added card is absent from the registered sideboard or any proposed removed card is absent from the registered main deck. Instructions: Submit only exact registered card names. The main deck must remain exactly 100 cards and the sideboard must remain exactly 10 cards after the exchange. Do not submit invented placeholders, nickname fragments, strategic categories, or unregistered cards. If validation fails, revert to the closest legal axis plan that preserves the registered deck contract and keeps mana, cantrips, interaction, and threat count functional. Pilot skill floor: low No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Narrow Hate Deployment
Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction; timing; hate_piece_deployment Cards: Tormod's Crypt; Soul-Guide Lantern; Armored Scrapgorger; Cankerbloom; Endurance; Grafdigger's Cage; Abrade; Ancient Grudge; Force of Vigor; Pithing Needle Phase windows: opening hand, main phase, opponent graveyard window, stack window, combat setup, sideboarded games Runtime cues: action:cast Endurance; action:cast Grafdigger's Cage; action:cast Pithing Needle; action:cast Abrade; action:cast Ancient Grudge; action:cast Force of Vigor; action:activate Tormod's Crypt; action:activate Soul-Guide Lantern Use when: a narrow hate card interacts with a visible graveyard, artifact, enchantment, equipment, prison, activated-ability, or recursion engine. Avoid when: the card only reduces a noncritical resource, fails to answer the current pressure axis, or consumes mana or green pitch material needed to protect Eshki Dragonclaw or a decisive threat. Instructions: Time graveyard hate for a committed target, cost, stack object, or recursion action unless the engine shows that waiting loses the window. Deploy Grafdigger's Cage early when the opponent depends on the restricted zone movement. Use Abrade, Ancient Grudge, and Force of Vigor on the permanent that changes combat, mana, prison, or combo math, not on a replaceable artifact. Use Pithing Needle only with a known activated-ability object from public information or a commander-specific read supported by the matchup context. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
Policy: Color Interaction Discipline
Priority: Medium Decision families: sideboard; stack_interaction; protection Cards: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Hydroblast; Veil of Summer; Counterspell; Daze; Spell Pierce; Memory Lapse; Lazotep Plating; Snakeskin Veil Phase windows: sideboard lock, stack windows, protected threat turn, lethal burn window Runtime cues: action:cast Pyroblast; action:cast Red Elemental Blast; action:cast Hydroblast; action:cast Veil of Summer; opponent color identity; spell on stack Use when: a color-specific interaction card has a legal opposing spell, permanent, or interaction pattern that matters to the current race or protected commitment. Avoid when: the color-specific card is not live against public information, or when spending it on a minor exchange leaves Eshki Dragonclaw, Tyrranax Rex, Balustrade Wurm, Undermountain Adventurer, or a lethal combat step exposed. Instructions: Treat Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast as premium one-mana tools for blue stack fights and decisive blue permanents. Treat Hydroblast as a life-total and combat-math stabilizer against red spells or permanents. Treat Veil of Summer as a commitment shield against blue or black disruption, not as a low-value cantrip. In sideboarded games, hold color interaction for the exchange that decides whether the deck stabilizes, resolves a payoff, or survives lethal pressure. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
