Strategy Specifications

Deck Name And Archetype

  • Strategy name: Alela Draw Go is a Dimir Commander draw-go flash deck built around Alela, Cunning Conqueror as the command-zone engine for first-spell-on-opponent-turn Faerie token production and goad pressure.

  • Format validation: Active format is Commander, and the registered build passes the provided format-aware count contract as 100 main-deck cards with singleton construction outside basic lands and a 10 card Veles policy sideboard.

  • Commander identity: Alela, Cunning Conqueror defines a blue-black color identity, and the registered nonland spells, mana rocks, sideboard cards, and lands stay inside Dimir or colorless identity on the supplied list.

  • Registered zones: Alela, Cunning Conqueror is the commander and should be treated as starting in the command zone for runtime planning even though the deck inventory lists it in Main (100); sideboard-only cards are Leyline of the Void, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, Toxic Deluge, Thoughtseize, Duress, Negate, Blue Elemental Blast, Feed the Swarm, and Sheoldred's Edict.

  • Archetype tags: The active tags are draw-go, flash, faerie tokens, goad, end-step priority, edge-case, and draft-only; Veles should classify this as a reactive commander tempo-control deck rather than a tap-out tribal creature deck.

  • Stock / rogue / hybrid status: This is a rogue-hybrid Commander list, combining familiar Dimir interaction such as Counterspell, Force of Will, Mana Drain, Demonic Tutor, Rhystic Study, and The One Ring with a deck-specific Alela, Cunning Conqueror flash-token plan and unusual goad/combat leverage.

  • Primary strategic identity: The deck wins by passing with mana open, casting one high-impact spell on each opponent's turn when possible, converting those casts into Faerie bodies through Alela, Cunning Conqueror, then turning evasive tokens into cards through Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, or Kindred Discovery.

  • Secondary strategic identity: The deck can pivot into prison-tempo play with Propaganda, Opposition, Court of Cunning, Bitterblossom, Scion of Oona, and goad pressure, forcing opponents to spend combat and removal resources away from the Alela pilot while the hand stays stocked.

  • Mana validation concern: The mana base is heavily blue-black and includes fast rocks Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, and Fellwar Stone, but only 3 Island and 1 Swamp are basic lands, so fetchland and Path-style decisions must respect actual registered basic targets and should not assume abundant basics.

  • Role validation concern: The list has many reactive singleton cards with overlapping but not identical jobs, so the guide must preserve exact legal scope: counterspells answer stack objects, Go for the Throat, Reality Shift, Pongify, Snuff Out, and Deadly Rollick answer different permanent classes or costs, and Feed the Swarm is sorcery-speed black interaction.

  • Support validation concern: The import note says to validate current Commander legality and first-spell-on-opponent-turn token/goad replay visibility before publication; this specification should treat deck construction as passing under the supplied Veles contract while still flagging live banlist/card-reference and replay-display checks as required before the strategy is promoted from draft-only.

  • Opponent information status: No specific opponent decklists, commanders, seats, hands, hidden zones, or metagame targets are supplied, so all matchup and policy guidance must rely on visible board state, public stack information, revealed cards, legal actions from the rules engine, and broad archetype cues rather than invented opponent contents.

Thesis

Alela Draw Go assembles Alela, Cunning Conqueror, open blue-black mana, instant-speed interaction, and evasive Faerie pressure so each opponent's turn can become both a control window and a board-development window. The ideal turn cycle is to pass with mana available, answer only the spell or permanent that matters, cast one spell on an opponent's turn when the rules engine presents a legal profitable window, and convert that timing into Faerie tokens, goad pressure, and later card draw from combat-damage engines.

The deck wins by making opponents fight through countermagic while small flyers become a real clock. Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, and Kindred Discovery turn evasive bodies into hand size; Opposition, Propaganda, goad pressure, and selective removal make combat awkward for opponents; Hullbreaker Horror, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Rankle, Master of Pranks, and monarch-style pressure from Court of Cunning give higher-end closing routes when the table stalls.

The deck is not trying to tap out early for generic tribal development or spend interaction on the first legal target. Preserve mana, commander access, and card-flow engines over small tempo wins. If Alela, Cunning Conqueror is too expensive under commander tax or unsafe into visible removal, operate as Dimir draw-go with Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, The One Ring, flash creatures, tutors, and efficient answers until a protected recast window appears.

Prioritize stack discipline over maximum spell volume. Alela rewards the first spell on each opponent's turn, but the pilot should not fire a low-impact spell just to make a token if doing so exposes Counterspell, Mana Drain, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Swan Song, Flusterstorm, Spell Pierce, or An Offer You Can't Refuse at the wrong time. Token creation is a payoff for already-good timing, not permission to waste interaction.

Role Package

  • Threats: Alela, Cunning Conqueror is the command-zone engine and main pressure source; Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Rankle, Master of Pranks, Vendilion Clique, Brazen Borrower, Quickling, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, Glen Elendra Archmage, Sower of Temptation, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, Hullbreaker Horror, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Notion Thief, Orcish Bowmasters, Dauthi Voidwalker, and Opposition Agent are the creature package that pressures life totals, interrupts opponents, or turns draw-go timing into board presence.

  • Payoffs: Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, and Kindred Discovery are the main token-to-cards conversion package, while Skullclamp converts expendable creatures into cards when equipped legally and profitably. Opposition turns Faerie volume into tap pressure, and Court of Cunning rewards staying defended as the monarch rather than racing carelessly.

  • Engines: Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, The One Ring, Kindred Discovery, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, and Faerie Mastermind are the repeatable-resource core. Protect engines that produce multiple future cards or bodies; do not trade them for a one-turn attack unless that attack is lethal or prevents a visible loss.

  • Velocity: Brainstorm, Ponder, Preordain, Fact or Fiction, Dig Through Time, Mystical Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, and Demonic Tutor find land drops, protection, draw engines, sweep recovery, or a finisher. Use tutors to solve the current bottleneck, not to chase a generic strongest card.

  • Interaction: Stack answers are An Offer You Can't Refuse, Swan Song, Flusterstorm, Fierce Guardianship, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Mana Drain, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Spell Pierce, and sometimes Drown in the Loch depending on legal target and graveyard state. Board answers are Go for the Throat, Snuff Out, Deadly Rollick, Reality Shift, Pongify, Cyclonic Rift, Feed the Swarm, Dress Down, Brazen Borrower, Sower of Temptation, Orcish Bowmasters, Dauthi Voidwalker, and Bojuka Bog within their exact rules-engine scopes.

  • Protection: Lightning Greaves, Scion of Oona, Glen Elendra Archmage, free or discounted permission, and careful end-step sequencing protect Alela, Cunning Conqueror and the card engines. Protection decisions should respect visible legal targets and should not assume a counterspell can answer a resolved permanent.

  • Recursion: Takenuma, Abandoned Mire is the registered graveyard recovery tool and should be saved for a meaningful creature or planeswalker return line if card-reference metadata confirms the legal channel text and target set. Dauthi Voidwalker can convert opposing graveyard activity into future access only when the rules engine exposes legal actions.

  • Mana: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, Fellwar Stone, and the Dimir land base support passing with interaction while developing. Fetchlands must respect the registered targets, especially the low basic count of 3 Island and 1 Swamp.

  • Sideboard modules: Leyline of the Void and Grafdigger's Cage are graveyard-prevention tools; Pithing Needle is activated-ability pressure; Toxic Deluge resets creature boards; Thoughtseize and Duress add proactive disruption; Negate and Blue Elemental Blast tune stack interaction; sideboard Feed the Swarm adds another sorcery-speed enchantment or creature answer; Sheoldred's Edict adds sacrifice-based removal against protected or singular threats.

Primary Win Conditions

  • Alela tempo-control is the default win path: set up Alela, Cunning Conqueror, untap with open blue-black mana, then cast one meaningful spell on each opponent's turn to make evasive Faerie tokens and goad opposing creatures. Execute by answering only stack or board actions that threaten the engine, your life total, or a decisive opponent combo, then attack with flyers while opponents are pressured to attack elsewhere. Prioritize this line when Alela can be cast or recast without leaving shields fully down, especially with Lightning Greaves, Scion of Oona, Glen Elendra Archmage, or free permission available.

  • Combat-draw snowball is the cleanest closing engine: combine Faerie tokens, flash creatures, and evasive attackers with Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, or Kindred Discovery. Execute by preserving attackers that can connect, choosing attack targets whose blockers and life totals are exposed, and using Propaganda, goad, removal, or bounce to keep crackback manageable. Disruption to respect includes sweepers, fog-like effects, monarch theft, and removal pointed at the draw enchantment; prioritize this line when at least two evasive bodies can attack safely or when the hand is low and each combat step must refill interaction.

  • Opposition lock pressure wins stalled tables: use Bitterblossom, Alela tokens, and other expendable creatures to fuel Opposition, then tap opposing blockers, mana sources, or key attackers at legal windows. Execute by denying the opponent most able to break the board, not by tapping random permanents; keep enough untapped creatures for defense when your life total is under pressure. Prioritize this line when creature volume is high and the table cannot easily remove Opposition, but avoid committing to it if losing token bodies would shut off combat-draw engines or expose you to a visible lethal attack.

  • High-end finisher control closes when the token plan is contained: deploy Hullbreaker Horror, Oona, Queen of the Fae, or a protected Rankle, Master of Pranks after opponents have spent key interaction or when your permission can defend the turn cycle. Hullbreaker Horror should convert each later spell into tempo only through legal triggered choices; Oona, Queen of the Fae is a mana sink when holding up interaction is no longer enough; Rankle, Master of Pranks should choose only modes that improve the current board. Prioritize these threats when Alela is taxed out, commander damage is irrelevant, or combat-draw engines are removed.

Secondary Win Conditions

  • Faerie chip damage remains valid without Alela: Bitterblossom, Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Vendilion Clique, Quickling, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, and stolen or protected creatures can still reduce life totals in the air. Attack the opponent with the weakest air defense or the combo player closest to winning, and hold back bodies only when they are needed for Opposition, Skullclamp, or blocking a visible lethal line.

  • Resource denial can become a win condition: Notion Thief, Orcish Bowmasters, Opposition Agent, Dauthi Voidwalker, Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, The One Ring, Court of Cunning, and efficient permission can leave opponents unable to progress while small threats finish the game. These cards are not interchangeable; use them at windows where their exact legal text matters, and do not assume hidden draws, searches, or graveyard choices beyond what the rules engine exposes.

  • Court and mill pressure is a fallback clock: Court of Cunning is strongest when Propaganda, goad, flyers, or removal can protect monarch status. Treat monarch defense as part of the win condition; do not take a marginal attack that lets an opponent steal the crown unless that attack produces lethal damage or prevents an immediate loss.

  • Tutor-to-bottleneck lines are secondary closures: Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, and Mystical Tutor should find the missing piece for the current board, such as permission to force a finisher through, Cyclonic Rift to reopen combat, Opposition for a token lock, or a draw engine to recover cards. Do not tutor generically when visible pressure demands a specific answer.

Emergency Lines

  • Behind on life, stabilize before drawing extra cards: prioritize Propaganda, Cyclonic Rift, Pongify, Reality Shift, Go for the Throat, Deadly Rollick, Snuff Out, Brazen Borrower, Sower of Temptation, and legal Dress Down windows over adding another slow engine. The One Ring can buy time only if its protection and burden timing are legal and the next turns are survivable.

  • Behind on board, reset tempo rather than trade one-for-one into a losing battlefield: preserve Cyclonic Rift for the widest legal swing when possible, use spot removal on lethal or engine-enabling creatures, and use goad from Alela triggers to redirect combat away from you. If your own Faeries are the only blockers, do not sacrifice them to Skullclamp or tap them to Opposition before checking visible attacks.

  • Behind on cards, convert safe combat or engines into refill: prioritize Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Fact or Fiction, Dig Through Time, The One Ring, and combat-draw enchantments over low-impact flash bodies. If opponents can immediately remove the engine, hold up permission or choose an instant-speed draw line instead.

  • Behind on mana, stop forcing commander recasts: use Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, and Fellwar Stone to rebuild, and fetch only registered legal targets. If Alela has high commander tax, operate as draw-go with flash threats and tutors until the recast window is protected.

  • Behind to graveyard recursion or combo, answer the enabling zone or stack action before developing pressure: use Bojuka Bog, Dauthi Voidwalker, Counterspell, Mana Drain, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Swan Song, Flusterstorm, Spell Pierce, An Offer You Can't Refuse, or Drown in the Loch only when their exact legal target exists. If primary win conditions are removed, pivot to protected high-end finishers, monarch pressure, or evasive chip damage while conserving interaction for the next deterministic threat.

Resource Model

  • Life is a spendable buffer, not a primary engine: use life to pay Snuff Out, absorb Bitterblossom losses, survive The One Ring burden turns, and take nonlethal combat hits while holding interaction for higher-impact threats. Stop converting life into cards or tempo when visible attacks, commander damage, or direct damage can put you under lethal pressure before the next untap.

  • Hand size is the deck's main shield: convert cards into time through Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Mana Drain, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Swan Song, Flusterstorm, Spell Pierce, An Offer You Can't Refuse, and spot removal only when the opposing spell or permanent changes the game. Convert time back into cards with Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Fact or Fiction, Dig Through Time, The One Ring, and combat-draw engines; do not empty the hand on low-impact flash bodies if Alela is not protected.

  • Mana is strongest when left unused until opponents act: pass with blue and black sources open, then spend mana on flash creatures, tutors, draw, removal, or Alela-triggering interaction at the latest legal window. Sol Ring accelerates generic costs, commander tax, and artifacts, but it does not solve colored requirements for Counterspell, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Notion Thief, Opposition Agent, or black removal.

  • Board presence is both pressure and infrastructure: Faerie tokens, Bitterblossom, flash creatures, and evasive bodies convert into combat damage, cards through Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, and Kindred Discovery, taps through Opposition, and cards through Skullclamp. Do not spend the same body twice; before clamping, tapping, attacking, or championing with Mistbind Clique, check whether that creature is needed to block, keep monarch, carry combat-draw triggers, or maintain a legal board role.

  • Graveyard and exile are tactical zones, not default fuel: Dig Through Time can convert graveyard cards into selection through delve, while Dauthi Voidwalker, Bojuka Bog, and sideboard Leyline of the Void or Grafdigger's Cage pressure opposing graveyard plans. Use Takenuma, Abandoned Mire only when its channel line is legal and the expected return matters more than preserving the land as mana access.

  • Information is a resource to buy before committing: Vendilion Clique, Thoughtseize, Duress, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, and exposed stack choices tell the pilot whether to tap out, hold permission, or tutor. Treat hidden cards as unknown; do not assume opponents lack sweepers, removal, or combo pieces just because no response has been shown.

  • Sideboard bullets are narrow resource converters: Toxic Deluge trades life for a reset, Pithing Needle trades a card for a named activated ability constraint, Negate and Blue Elemental Blast add stack coverage, Feed the Swarm and Sheoldred's Edict add removal angles, and Leyline of the Void, Grafdigger's Cage, Thoughtseize, and Duress alter pregame or early-game interaction density.

Mana Guide

  • Keep hands that produce early blue and black interaction: a strong opener usually has two or more lands, at least one blue source, access to black by turn two or three, and either a draw engine, mana rock, tutor, or cheap interaction. Mulligan hands with only colorless utility, only tapped lands plus no one- or two-mana play, or no path to cast Alela, removal, or permission before opponents develop.

  • Sequence colored sources before utility when shields matter: prioritize Command Tower, Underground Sea, Watery Grave, Morphic Pool, Underground River, Darkslick Shores, Drowned Catacomb, Shipwreck Marsh, Clearwater Pathway, Sunken Hollow, Sunken Ruins, Choked Estuary, River of Tears, and Tainted Isle according to what the rules engine says they can produce now. Save Reliquary Tower, Bojuka Bog, Otawara, Soaring City, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire for their utility value unless they are needed to make land drops or unlock colors.

  • Account for tapped lands before promising interaction: Path of Ancestry, Temple of Deceit, Fetid Pools, and some check-style lands can cost a turn if sequenced poorly. Prefer tapped lands on turns where the hand has no legal instant to hold up, then preserve untapped blue for counterspells and black for Go for the Throat, Drown in the Loch, Feed the Swarm, Deadly Rollick, or hard-cast Snuff Out when life payment is unsafe.

  • Fetch only registered legal targets and fetch with a purpose: Polluted Delta, Flooded Strand, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Scalding Tarn, and Prismatic Vista should fix the missing color, enable untapped interaction, improve Brainstorm, or prepare future double-blue and black turns. Delay fetches before Brainstorm, Ponder, or Preordain when the shuffle or library manipulation matters; fetch first when the current turn requires exact mana.

  • Play lands after draw spells when the land choice can improve: cast Ponder, Preordain, Brainstorm, or instant-speed selection before the land drop if the current mana already supports it and the decision may reveal a better land. Play the land first when it unlocks the spell, preserves a counterspell window, pays for Mystic Remora, or prevents discarding to hand size.

  • Recast Alela only through a protected mana window: commander tax makes colored access and generic acceleration both relevant, so use Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, and Fellwar Stone to pay tax while preserving blue or free permission. If recasting Alela consumes all colored mana and no protection is available, continue draw-go with flash threats until the table gives a safer window.

Mulligan Guide

  • Strong keep: keep two or three lands with early blue, black by turn two or three, and one engine or shield, such as Command Tower plus Watery Grave with Mystic Remora and Counterspell, or Underground Sea plus Darkslick Shores with Rhystic Study and Go for the Throat. Alela starts in the command zone, so the opener needs mana and interaction more than a creature curve.

  • Strong keep with acceleration: keep Sol Ring or Arcane Signet hands when they still produce colored mana for interaction, especially with Faerie Mastermind, Bitterblossom, Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Talion, the Kindly Lord, or The One Ring. Do not keep Sol Ring plus colorless utility alone if the hand cannot cast blue or black spells before opponents commit threats.

  • Medium keep: keep two-land hands with Ponder, Preordain, or Brainstorm only when at least one land makes blue now and the hand has a live follow-up such as Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Arcane Denial, Drown in the Loch, Dimir Signet, or Talisman of Dominance. These hands are better on the draw; on the play, ship them if the second color or second land depends on several unknown draw steps.

  • Risky keep: keep one-land hands only with an untapped blue source, a one-mana selection spell, and a second cheap play that matters if the land is found, such as Ponder plus Mystic Remora or Preordain plus Spell Pierce. Ship one-land hands with Temple of Deceit, Fetid Pools, Bojuka Bog, Reliquary Tower, Otawara, Soaring City, or Takenuma, Abandoned Mire as the only land unless the rules engine shows an immediate legal fixing line.

  • Automatic ship: ship hands with no land, one tapped land and no one-mana selection, no blue source, no black access plus no selection, or only late cards such as Hullbreaker Horror, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Kindred Discovery, Fact or Fiction, and Dig Through Time. Also ship hands that spend the first three turns doing only Reliquary Tower, Bojuka Bog, or tapped-land setup while holding interaction that cannot be cast.

  • Matchup-dependent keep: keep fast Dauthi Voidwalker, Opposition Agent, Notion Thief, Orcish Bowmasters, or Dress Down hands when the known opponent plan exposes graveyard use, searching, extra draws, or creature-text dependence. Against creature swarms, prioritize Propaganda, Bitterblossom, Pongify, Reality Shift, Feed the Swarm, Snuff Out, and Deadly Rollick; against spell combo, prioritize Spell Pierce, Flusterstorm, Swan Song, An Offer You Can't Refuse, Force of Will, Force of Negation, and Fierce Guardianship.

  • Play/draw adjustment: on the play, favor Mystic Remora, Bitterblossom, Rhystic Study, Sol Ring, and untapped interaction because the deck can set a tax or engine before opponents spend mana. On the draw, accept slightly slower two-land selection hands if Brainstorm, Ponder, Preordain, Faerie Mastermind, or Spellstutter Sprite can convert observed opponent actions into cards or tempo.

  • Trap hand: do not keep a hand that looks powerful because it has Force of Will, Force of Negation, or Fierce Guardianship but lacks a blue card to pitch, a commander window, or enough mana to participate after the free spell. Do not keep multiple combat-draw enchantments without bodies; Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, and Kindred Discovery need evasive creatures or Faerie tokens before they are engines.

Turn Arc

  • Turn 1: lead with untapped blue when holding Ponder, Preordain, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Flusterstorm, or An Offer You Can't Refuse; lead with black or blue-black when holding Mystic Remora, Dauthi Voidwalker, Orcish Bowmasters, or Vampiric Tutor. Use Sol Ring first only when it immediately casts Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, Fellwar Stone, Lightning Greaves, Skullclamp, or The One Ring without stranding colored interaction.

  • Turn 1 deviation: play tapped setup lands such as Path of Ancestry, Temple of Deceit, or Fetid Pools when no one-mana spell is legal or when preserving future colored mana matters more than bluffing. Hold fetch lands for Brainstorm when current mana is already functional; fetch immediately when the hand needs Underground Sea, Watery Grave, Island, or Swamp access to cast a live spell.

  • Turn 2: prefer a passive engine or shield over a naked attacker, with Mystic Remora, Bitterblossom, Faerie Mastermind, Dauthi Voidwalker, Orcish Bowmasters, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, and Fellwar Stone as the cleanest development. If opponents threaten a must-answer spell, pass with Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Spellstutter Sprite, Drown in the Loch, Go for the Throat, Pongify, or Reality Shift instead of tapping out.

  • Turn 3: cast Alela, Cunning Conqueror only when the rules engine shows legal mana and the table cannot easily punish a tapped-out commander, or when Lightning Greaves, free permission, or cheap interaction can protect the turn cycle. If the commander window is poor, develop Rhystic Study, Propaganda, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Vendilion Clique, Brazen Borrower, Opposition Agent, Notion Thief, or end-step Nymris, Oona's Trickster lines while keeping priority discipline.

  • Turns 4-5: shift from setup to draw-go pressure by passing with mana open, casting the first spell on each opponent's turn when tactically useful for Alela token/goad production, and turning evasive creatures into cards through Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, or Kindred Discovery. Commit Opposition, Court of Cunning, The One Ring, Mistbind Clique, or Glen Elendra Archmage when they either protect an existing board, break a stalled table, or answer a visible threat better than holding all mana.

  • Turns 4-5 deviation: use Cyclonic Rift, Deadly Rollick, Snuff Out, Feed the Swarm, Dress Down, or Sower of Temptation to prevent a decisive board state, not to tidy up minor permanents. Champion with Mistbind Clique only when a legal Faerie can be risked and the resulting tap effect or evasive body matters more than preserving that Faerie for blocks, draw triggers, Opposition, or Skullclamp.

  • Late game: win by chaining protected flash turns, token pressure, goad disruption, and high-end closers such as Hullbreaker Horror, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Rankle, Master of Pranks, and repeated combat-draw triggers. Recast Alela, Cunning Conqueror through commander tax only when the mana base can still represent interaction; otherwise keep playing draw-go with flash threats, tutors, and engines until a safer recast window appears.

Card Roles

  • Alela, Cunning Conqueror is the deck's command-zone engine: cast her when the table is forced to respect open mana, then use the first spell on each opponent's turn to create Faeries and goad opposing creatures. Recast through commander tax only when the same turn can still hold interaction or immediately convert a flash spell into a token.
  • Flash Faeries are the tempo core: Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Vendilion Clique, Quickling, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, and Nymris, Oona's Trickster let the pilot spend mana after opponents commit. Do not fire them as generic bodies when a later priority window can counter, disrupt a draw/search, protect the board, or trigger Alela.
  • Pressure and theft threats convert stalled boards into wins: Rankle, Master of Pranks, Sower of Temptation, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Hullbreaker Horror, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, and Glen Elendra Archmage are commitment cards, not curve-fillers. Cast them when they either stabilize immediately, punish the table's next action, or protect an existing token engine.
  • Passive engines define keeps and tutor priorities: Bitterblossom, Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Kindred Discovery, Court of Cunning, The One Ring, and Skullclamp should be sequenced before expensive closers when the table is not presenting a must-counter spell. Combat-draw enchantments need bodies first; do not keep or cast multiples into an empty board.
  • Interaction is tiered by what it answers: Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain, Counterspell, Flusterstorm, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Arcane Denial, and An Offer You Can't Refuse protect the draw-go posture; Go for the Throat, Snuff Out, Deadly Rollick, Reality Shift, Pongify, Drown in the Loch, Cyclonic Rift, Feed the Swarm, and Dress Down answer resolved pressure. Spend removal on threats that break Alela, lethal clocks, or engines that ignore goad.
  • Tutors and selection fix context, not vanity: Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, and Mystical Tutor find the missing piece for the current board, while Brainstorm, Ponder, Preordain, Fact or Fiction, and Dig Through Time should preserve interaction density. Use fetch lands with Brainstorm; do not tutor a finisher when survival or mana is the visible bottleneck.
  • Mana artifacts and lands should maximize untapped blue-black access while preserving end-step play: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, and Fellwar Stone accelerate only if they do not strand interaction. Cavern of Souls, Path of Ancestry, and Secluded Courtyard should name/support Faeries or the commander plan when legal; channel lands and utility lands are late-game resources, not early color assumptions.

Card Hover Notes

Alela, Cunning Conqueror

  • Deck role: commander/main inventory, 1 copy, core command-zone engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: turns the first spell you cast during each opponent's turn into a 1/1 black Faerie Rogue with flying, then turns Faerie combat damage into goad on target creature controlled by the damaged player.
  • Timing: cast or recast only when the turn cycle can protect her or immediately use opponent-turn priority; avoid spending all mana into visible removal unless Fierce Guardianship, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Lightning Greaves, or Scion of Oona covers the risk.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes commander mana plus commander tax after deaths; outputs flying tokens, goad targets after Faerie combat damage, and pressure that fuels Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Kindred Discovery, Opposition, and Skullclamp.
  • Partners / packages: first-spell enablers are Spellstutter Sprite, Faerie Mastermind, Vendilion Clique, Quickling, Brazen Borrower, Notion Thief, Opposition Agent, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, Brainstorm, Mystical Tutor, and instant interaction.
  • Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Bitterblossom for repeat Faeries and Nymris, Oona's Trickster for first-spell-on-opponent-turn card selection.
  • Failure modes: recasting through commander tax with no follow-up shield, firing a meaningless opponent-turn spell before a real threat, or forgetting goad requires one or more Faeries you control to deal combat damage to that player.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest when opponents are trying to attack each other or fight on the stack; weaker into repeated sweepers unless you preserve counters and commander-tax mana.
  • Low-skill guidance: default to returning Alela to the command zone when she would go to graveyard or exile, track +2 commander tax, and recast only when protection or an opponent-turn spell window is available.

Faerie Mastermind

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flash Faerie role player.
  • Role type: engine piece; threat/clock; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: gives Alela a cheap opponent-turn spell that makes a token, pressures in the air, and punishes an opponent's second draw each turn by drawing you a card.
  • Timing: usually hold for an opponent's turn, especially before a visible extra-draw spell; activate {3}{U}: Each player draws a card only when the card you draw plus Bowmasters/Notion Thief-style pressure is worth giving cards to opponents.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes two mana to cast or four mana to activate; outputs a flying attacker, Alela trigger timing, and card draw when an opponent draws their second card that turn.
  • Partners / packages: works with Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Orcish Bowmasters, Notion Thief, Talion, the Kindly Lord, and combat-draw enchantments Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, and Coastal Piracy.
  • Role peers: Rhystic Study and Mystic Remora also tax or reward opponent card flow, but Faerie Mastermind is a flash creature and Alela trigger.
  • Failure modes: main-phase casting as a 2/1 when an opponent-turn trigger is likely, activating into opponents with more mana/cards than you, or missing that its draw trigger checks each opponent's second card each turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against wheels, cantrips, and draw engines; less urgent against creature decks that are not drawing extra cards.
  • Low-skill guidance: if unsure, cast it on an opponent's end step or in response to their extra draw, not during your own main phase.

Spellstutter Sprite

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flash Faerie interaction piece.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; mechanic enabler; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target spell with mana value X or less, where X is the number of Faeries you control, while also advancing Alela's opponent-turn token plan.
  • Timing: cast only when a spell on the stack is actually counterable by your current Faerie count, or at end step when the 1/1 flyer body and Alela trigger matter more than holding a counter window.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U} and a stack target; outputs a 1/1 flyer, a possible counter, and another Faerie for future Spellstutter Sprite, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, and combat-draw attacks.
  • Partners / packages: counts Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Alela tokens, Bitterblossom tokens, Faerie Mastermind, Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, Vendilion Clique, Quickling, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, Sower of Temptation, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, and Oona, Queen of the Fae.
  • Role peers: Counterspell and Mana Drain are harder counters; Spellstutter is the creature-based tempo counter.
  • Failure modes: targeting a spell with mana value above Faerie count, casting it after the stack target resolves, or losing the Faerie count before the trigger resolves.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best against cheap commanders, tutors, removal, and setup spells; weaker when opponents present high-mana haymakers.
  • Low-skill guidance: count your Faeries before choosing the target; if the number is too low, save Spellstutter for a later spell or end step.

Obyra, Dreaming Duelist

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core Faerie drain payoff.
  • Role type: mechanic payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: makes each opponent lose 1 life whenever another Faerie you control enters, turning Alela tokens, Bitterblossom tokens, and flash Faeries into table-wide drain.
  • Timing: hold for an opponent's turn when Alela is online if the flash timing creates a token and protects mana; cast earlier against slow pods when repeated Faerie entries will add up before removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}{B}; outputs a flying body and life-loss triggers from later Faerie entries, but does not trigger from itself entering.
  • Partners / packages: strongest with Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, Spellstutter Sprite, Quickling, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, and Oona, Queen of the Fae.
  • Role peers: Talion, the Kindly Lord also drains and draws from opponent actions; Obyra specifically rewards your Faerie entries.
  • Failure modes: casting into a board where no future Faerie entries are likely, exposing it before a sweeper, or assuming it gains you life; it only makes opponents lose life.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: useful against stalled boards and life-total races; less important when survival requires removal or permission.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Obyra when you expect at least two more Faeries soon; do not spend interaction mana just to add a small flyer.

Talion, the Kindly Lord

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core predictive draw/drain threat.
  • Role type: engine piece; threat/clock; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: chooses a number from 1 to 10 as it enters and punishes opponents casting spells with mana value, power, or toughness equal to that number by making that player lose 2 life while you draw a card.
  • Timing: cast when you can name a number that matches visible commanders, common removal, or current board patterns; leave protection if the table can remove it before it triggers.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}{B}; outputs a flying body and repeat draw/drain tied to the chosen number.
  • Partners / packages: pairs with Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Faerie Mastermind, and Orcish Bowmasters to punish spell and draw-heavy turns.
  • Role peers: Faerie Mastermind and Rhystic Study also reward opponent action, but Talion needs a chosen number and adds life loss.
  • Failure modes: choosing a number with no visible or likely matches, tapping out into a must-counter turn, or forgetting power/toughness matches count in addition to mana value.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: choose numbers around known commanders and repeated mana values; against unknown pods, 2 or 3 often catches cheap interaction and utility creatures, but visible cards override heuristics.
  • Low-skill guidance: pick the number that appears on the opponent commander, key visible creature, or most likely cheap spells; protect Talion if it is already drawing cards.

Rankle, Master of Pranks

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton/flex finisher and disruption threat.
  • Role type: threat/clock; modal utility; discard outlet.
  • Deck-specific job: uses flying and haste to connect, then chooses any number of symmetrical combat-damage modes that can strip hands, pressure life totals, draw cards, or force creature sacrifices.
  • Timing: deploy when at least one mode is favorable after combat damage; avoid casting into boards where the sacrifice mode hurts your Alela engine more than opponents.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{B}{B}; outputs a hasty evasive attacker and optional discard, draw/life-loss, and sacrifice effects after it damages a player.
  • Mode map: discard mode makes each player discard a card, best when your worst card is worse than opponents' protected resources; draw/life mode makes each player lose 1 life and draw a card, best when you benefit from extra cards or Bowmasters/Notion Thief context; sacrifice mode makes each player sacrifice a creature of their choice, best when you can lose a token or stolen creature while opponents lose a key body.
  • Partners / packages: disposable bodies from Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, and Oona, Queen of the Fae make sacrifice mode safer; Orcish Bowmasters and Notion Thief punish the draw mode.
  • Role peers: Sower of Temptation and Oona, Queen of the Fae are other closers, but Rankle is the combat-triggered modal one.
  • Failure modes: choosing modes automatically, giving opponents cards when you cannot use them first, or sacrificing a unique engine while opponents sacrifice expendable tokens.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against control hands and creature-light boards; risky against token decks and graveyard decks that welcome discard.
  • Low-skill guidance: after Rankle hits, choose only the modes that hurt opponents more than you right now; selecting no modes is legal if all modes are bad.

Vendilion Clique

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flash information Faerie.
  • Role type: interaction-discard; mechanic enabler; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: flashes in to inspect target player's hand, optionally bottom a nonland card, and give that player a replacement draw while adding a 3/1 flying Faerie.
  • Timing: cast before an opponent's draw step to disrupt a known plan, in response to a tutor/top-card setup when legal, or on an end step to clear removal before your Alela/engine turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U}{U}; outputs hand information, possible nonland-card disruption, a new card for that player, and an evasive Faerie.
  • Partners / packages: supports Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Spellstutter Sprite, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, and combat-draw cards Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, and Coastal Piracy.
  • Role peers: Thoughtseize and Duress are sideboard hand disruption; Vendilion Clique is instant-speed and gives a draw back.
  • Failure modes: targeting the wrong player, bottoming a low-impact card and improving their hand, or casting it as a main-phase attacker without using the information window.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best before combo turns, counter wars, or protected removal; medium against redundant creature boards.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Clique to check the player most likely to win or stop your next engine, and only take a nonland card that matters more than the random card they draw.

Brazen Borrower

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core adventure tempo Faerie.
  • Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Petty Theft buys tempo by returning target nonland permanent an opponent controls to its owner's hand, then Brazen Borrower becomes a flash 3/1 flyer that can block only creatures with flying.
  • Timing: use the Adventure side when a blocker, hate permanent, commander, or combo permanent must be reset; cast the creature later on an opponent's turn or end step to trigger Alela and attack.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U} for the instant Adventure or {1}{U}{U} for the creature; outputs temporary nonland-permanent interaction and an evasive Faerie body.
  • Mode map: Petty Theft targets only a nonland permanent an opponent controls and is best for tempo or clearing attacks; Brazen Borrower is the creature aspect, best when pressure, Alela timing, or combat-draw triggers matter, but it cannot block non-flying creatures.
  • Partners / packages: works with Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Scion of Oona, Mistbind Clique, Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, and Coastal Piracy.
  • Role peers: Cyclonic Rift also bounces nonland permanents you do not control; Brazen Borrower gives a later creature but cannot overload.
  • Failure modes: bouncing a permanent that immediately recasts profitably, forgetting the creature's blocking restriction, or casting the creature before using a high-value Petty Theft window.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against commanders, stax pieces, and blockers that open lethal/combat-draw attacks; weak as a permanent answer without a counter for the recast.
  • Low-skill guidance: prefer Petty Theft first when a nonland permanent is causing trouble; use the creature side later as an opponent-turn flyer.

Quickling

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flash Faerie rescue/flex slot.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; mechanic enabler; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: provides a cheap flash flyer and can save or reuse another creature you control by returning it to its owner's hand, but it sacrifices itself unless you return another creature.
  • Timing: cast in response to removal, after blocks if legal, or at end step when returning a creature is acceptable; avoid casting with no other creature unless sacrificing Quickling is intended.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U} and requires another creature you control to return if you want to keep Quickling; outputs Alela trigger timing, a 2/2 flyer, and reuse of enters effects.
  • Partners / packages: can pick up Spellstutter Sprite, Vendilion Clique, Sower of Temptation, Scion of Oona, Faerie Mastermind, or a threatened Alela, Cunning Conqueror.
  • Role peers: Brazen Borrower and Cyclonic Rift bounce opponent permanents; Quickling is self-bounce and protection.
  • Failure modes: returning the only blocker, undoing Sower of Temptation control, picking up Alela when commander-tax or board pressure makes recast bad, or casting into an empty board.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: valuable against targeted removal and for reusing Spellstutter Sprite; poor against sweepers that do not target.
  • Low-skill guidance: only cast Quickling when you can name the creature you are happy to return; otherwise wait.

Mistbind Clique

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flash Faerie tempo finisher.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: champions a Faerie, then when a Faerie is championed with it, taps all lands target player controls, creating a tempo lock window with a 4/4 flyer.
  • Timing: best during an opponent's upkeep or before a critical main phase when tapping that player's lands denies action; avoid championing a key Faerie unless the land tap is worth the risk.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{U} and a Faerie to exile under champion; outputs a large flyer and a one-player land tap if champion succeeds.
  • Partners / packages: champion low-value Alela or Bitterblossom Faerie tokens first; consider Spellstutter Sprite, Faerie Mastermind, Quickling, or Vendilion Clique only when their role is no longer needed.
  • Role peers: Opposition repeatedly taps artifacts, creatures, or lands; Mistbind Clique is a one-shot land tap attached to a flyer.
  • Failure modes: no Faerie to champion, exiling Alela, Cunning Conqueror or Scion of Oona when the board relies on them, or targeting the wrong player's lands.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong before combo/big-mana turns or to protect your turn from counters; weak against instant-heavy hands that can act before lands tap.
  • Low-skill guidance: champion a token when possible, and use Mistbind on the opponent whose next turn is most dangerous.

Scion of Oona

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flash Faerie protection lord.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; mechanic payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: gives other Faerie creatures you control +1/+1 and gives other Faeries you control shroud, protecting Alela tokens and Faerie engines from targeted spells and abilities while increasing combat damage.
  • Timing: hold for an opponent's targeted removal or combat math swing when possible; main-phase cast only when the anthem immediately enables safe attacks or blocks.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}; outputs a flying body, +1/+1 to other Faerie creatures, and shroud for other Faeries.
  • Partners / packages: protects Alela, Cunning Conqueror only if Alela is a Faerie and is "other" relative to Scion, plus Spellstutter Sprite, Faerie Mastermind, Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, Vendilion Clique, Mistbind Clique, Sower of Temptation, and tokens.
  • Role peers: Lightning Greaves gives one equipped creature shroud/haste; Scion covers other Faeries but not itself.
  • Failure modes: shutting off your own future targeting of other Faeries, casting after the targeted spell has resolved, or forgetting Scion does not protect itself with its own shroud ability.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against targeted removal and small-damage sweep patterns; weaker against sacrifice effects and non-targeting sweepers.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Scion like a surprise shield for your Faeries; do not cast it after the removal already resolved.

Glen Elendra Archmage

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core noncreature-spell protection piece.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: sits on board as repeatable pressure against noncreature spells, sacrificing to counter target noncreature spell and returning once through persist if it had no -1/-1 counter.
  • Timing: cast before committing Alela or engines if the table is likely to fight with sweepers, removal, or combo noncreature spells; activate only for a spell that matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{U} to cast and {U} plus sacrificing itself to counter; outputs a flying Faerie and up to two noncreature counters through persist.
  • Partners / packages: protects Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Rhystic Study, Bitterblossom, Kindred Discovery, Opposition, The One Ring, Hullbreaker Horror, and Oona, Queen of the Fae.
  • Role peers: Fierce Guardianship, Negate, Force of Negation, and An Offer You Can't Refuse also counter noncreature spells; Glen Elendra is visible and repeatable but mana-gated.
  • Failure modes: countering a low-impact noncreature spell, forgetting it cannot counter creature spells, or sacrificing it when the -1/-1 persist return will not happen again.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against control, combo, sweepers, and planeswalkers; less useful against creature-heavy pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: save Glen's sacrifice for sweepers, combo pieces, or removal aimed at your most important engine.

Sower of Temptation

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton creature-theft stabilizer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: steals target creature for as long as Sower remains on the battlefield, turning an opposing attacker/commander into your blocker or pressure source.
  • Timing: cast when the stolen creature changes combat, removes a combo piece from its controller, or protects monarch/engines; avoid tapping out if Sower will immediately die.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}{U} and a target creature; outputs a 2/2 flying Faerie and temporary control of that creature while Sower remains.
  • Partners / packages: protect with Scion of Oona, Lightning Greaves if equip is legal and does not block needed targeting, Counterspell, Fierce Guardianship, and Glen Elendra Archmage.
  • Role peers: Control Magic is not registered; closest current-list alternatives are Pongify, Reality Shift, Deadly Rollick, and Go for the Throat, which remove rather than steal.
  • Failure modes: stealing a creature that can be sacrificed profitably, losing Sower and giving the creature back mid-combat, or targeting a low-impact body while a lethal creature remains.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best against single large creatures and commanders without sacrifice outlets; weaker against token swarms and decks with cheap removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: steal the creature that would most hurt you if it attacked next turn, then protect Sower.

Nymris, Oona's Trickster

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flash first-spell selection engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: rewards the first spell you cast during each opponent's turn by looking at the top two cards of your library, putting one into hand and the other into graveyard.
  • Timing: cast at an opponent's end step or in response to a lower-risk action, then preserve mana on later opponent turns to trigger both Nymris and Alela from one meaningful spell.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{U}{B}; outputs a flying body and repeated card selection/graveyard filling on opponent-turn first spells.
  • Partners / packages: shares trigger discipline with Alela, Cunning Conqueror; fuel from graveyard can support Dig Through Time, while selected cards find Counterspell, Cyclonic Rift, Deadly Rollick, or engines.
  • Role peers: Fact or Fiction and Dig Through Time dig deeper once; Nymris is repeatable but needs opponent-turn spell timing.
  • Failure modes: tapping out before the dangerous turn cycle, casting extra low-impact spells after the first one without need, or putting a card into graveyard that Takenuma, Abandoned Mire cannot recover.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in slower pods where repeated priority cycles occur; weaker when life total demands immediate removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: after Nymris is out, cast one useful spell on each opponent's turn when possible and pick the card that solves the next threat.

Hullbreaker Horror

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton/flex high-end finisher.
  • Role type: engine payoff; reach/finisher; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: provides an uncounterable flash threat that turns each later spell you cast into a bounce trigger for target spell you don't control or target nonland permanent.
  • Timing: flash it in near the last safe end step or when opponents are tapped low; keep cheap spells afterward to protect it or bounce key permanents.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {5}{U}{U}; outputs a 7/8 body and repeated tempo from future spells, with triggers that choose up to one target.
  • Mode map: trigger mode one returns target spell you don't control to its owner's hand, useful in stack fights but not a true counter; trigger mode two returns target nonland permanent to its owner's hand, useful for blockers, hate pieces, and commanders.
  • Partners / packages: cheap follow-up spells Brainstorm, Ponder, Preordain, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, An Offer You Can't Refuse, and Mystical Tutor turn into bounce after Hullbreaker resolves.
  • Role peers: Cyclonic Rift provides broader one-shot bounce; Hullbreaker is repeatable but requires later spells.
  • Failure modes: casting it with no follow-up spells, bouncing a spell that can be recast immediately for value, or tapping out while another opponent can win before your next action.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against control and midrange boards that cannot remove it on the stack; weak if sacrifice edicts or sweepers are already visible.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast Hullbreaker late with mana/cards left, then use cheap spells to bounce the most dangerous stack spell or nonland permanent.

Oona, Queen of the Fae

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton/flex mana-sink finisher.
  • Role type: reach/finisher; engine payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: converts excess Dimir or generic mana through {X}{U/B} into targeted opponent exile and 1/1 blue and black Faerie Rogue tokens for each exiled card of the chosen color.
  • Timing: deploy when you can protect a six-mana flyer or activate soon; use the ability when holding mana no longer needs to answer a more dangerous stack or combat window.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{U/B}{U/B}{U/B} to cast and {X}{U/B} per activation; outputs exile pressure and flying Faerie tokens based on chosen color among cards exiled from target opponent's library.
  • Partners / packages: tokens feed Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, Kindred Discovery, Opposition, Skullclamp, Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, and Coastal Piracy.
  • Role peers: Alela, Cunning Conqueror and Bitterblossom also create Faeries; Oona is the large mana sink and library-pressure closer.
  • Failure modes: choosing a color with little chance to hit, activating into graveyard/exile replacement confusion, or tapping out before preserving a counter for a game-ending spell.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against stalled boards and opponents with known mono-color density; weaker under fast pressure or against decks that can remove Oona before activation.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Oona late, choose the opponent/color most likely to make tokens, and leave interaction mana if another player can win.

Notion Thief

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flash draw-punishment hate piece.
  • Role type: hate piece; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: replaces opponents' extra draws beyond the first card in their draw steps so they skip those draws and you draw instead.
  • Timing: flash in before an opponent's draw spell or draw trigger resolves, not after cards have already been drawn; keep counter mana if the draw spell is also dangerous.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}{B}; outputs stolen card draw from opponents' non-draw-step-first-card draws.
  • Partners / packages: punishes Faerie Mastermind activation by making opponents skip the draw while you draw; works with Orcish Bowmasters pressure on draw-heavy turns and protects your hand advantage from opposing engines.
  • Role peers: Faerie Mastermind draws when opponents draw their second card; Notion Thief prevents extra opponent draws and gives them to you.
  • Failure modes: casting into no draw event, missing that it affects opponents only, or tapping out for it when a counterspell would stop a win.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: high impact against wheels, big draw spells, and engine decks; lower impact against creature combat decks with few draw effects.
  • Low-skill guidance: wait until an opponent is about to draw extra cards, then flash Notion Thief before that draw resolves.

Orcish Bowmasters

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flash draw-punishment removal piece.
  • Role type: hate piece; interaction-removal; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: enters at instant speed to deal 1 damage to any target and amass Orcs 1, then repeats whenever an opponent draws a card except the first card they draw in each draw step.
  • Timing: flash in to pick off a 1-toughness creature, pressure planeswalkers, or punish an extra draw currently on the stack; save it if a wheel or draw engine is likely.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{B}; outputs damage to any target and an Army token or +1/+1 counter on an Army.
  • Partners / packages: pairs with Faerie Mastermind activation, Rankle, Master of Pranks draw/life mode, opponent draw spells, Mystic Remora, and Rhystic Study games where opponents are forced to draw or pay.
  • Role peers: Go for the Throat, Pongify, and Reality Shift are larger creature answers; Bowmasters is draw-triggered damage and token material.
  • Failure modes: firing at a low-value target before a known draw burst, assuming amass creates Faeries, or missing that normal first draw in draw step does not trigger it.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against cantrips, wheels, and small utility creatures; weaker into large creature boards without extra draws.
  • Low-skill guidance: hold Bowmasters for an extra-draw event or a 1-toughness target that matters.

Dauthi Voidwalker

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core graveyard hate and theft threat.
  • Role type: hate piece; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: replaces opponents' cards going to graveyard from anywhere by exiling them with void counters, then can tap and sacrifice itself to let you play one such exiled card this turn without paying its mana cost.
  • Timing: cast early against graveyard decks or before wheel/mill/discard turns; activate only when the chosen exiled card is worth losing the 3/2 shadow hate piece.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {B}{B}; outputs shadow pressure, graveyard prevention for opponents, and one-shot access to an opponent-owned exiled card with a void counter.
  • Partners / packages: works with Bojuka Bog, Leyline of the Void, Grafdigger's Cage, Thoughtseize, and Duress against graveyard/combo plans.
  • Role peers: Leyline of the Void prevents opponent graveyards more broadly from the opening hand; Dauthi adds a body and theft activation.
  • Failure modes: sacrificing it for a medium card while its static hate is stopping the opponent, or casting it when double black strands needed blue interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best against graveyard recursion, discard, sacrifice, and spell-heavy decks; less urgent against battlefield-only creature swarms.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Dauthi early when graveyards matter, and do not sacrifice it unless the free card changes the game.

Opposition Agent

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flash search-punishment hate piece.
  • Role type: hate piece; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: flashes in while an opponent is searching to let you control that opponent during the search, exile each card they find, and later play those exiled cards with mana as though it were any color.
  • Timing: hold for a fetch land, tutor, ramp search, or library-search trigger; casting it main phase as a 3/2 loses most of its blowout value.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{B}; outputs search denial, stolen exiled cards, and a 3/2 attacker.
  • Partners / packages: protects the draw-go plan alongside Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Flusterstorm, Ashiok-style effects are not registered; current-list overlap is Dauthi Voidwalker for exiled-card access and sideboard discard Thoughtseize/Duress for information.
  • Role peers: Pithing Needle can stop known activated search abilities; Opposition Agent punishes active library searches.
  • Failure modes: casting before an opponent commits to searching, missing that it only matters while an opponent is searching, or using stolen cards when holding mana was required.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against tutors, fetch-heavy decks, and big-mana search; mediocre against decks with few searches.
  • Low-skill guidance: keep three mana open when an opponent is likely to tutor or crack a fetch, then flash Agent in response.

Bitterblossom

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core Faerie token engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: loses 1 life at your upkeep to create a 1/1 black Faerie Rogue with flying, supplying steady attackers, blockers, champion material, Opposition taps, and Skullclamp bodies.
  • Timing: cast early when life total is safe and you can protect against fast pressure; delay or side down when your life is already under heavy attack.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{B} and 1 life each upkeep; outputs repeat flying Faerie tokens.
  • Partners / packages: feeds Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, Spellstutter Sprite, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Kindred Discovery, Opposition, and Skullclamp.
  • Role peers: Alela, Cunning Conqueror and Oona, Queen of the Fae also make Faeries; Bitterblossom does it without spending spells after it resolves.
  • Failure modes: ignoring life loss under red pressure, overvaluing tokens when a sweeper is visible, or clamping/tapping the only blocker.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against control and midrange; risky against fast burn or wide combat without Propaganda.
  • Low-skill guidance: play it early if your life total is stable; stop treating tokens as free if you need them to block.

Reconnaissance Mission

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core combat-draw payoff.
  • Role type: engine payoff; card selection; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: draws a card whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, with cycling {2} when the enchantment is too slow or you need a fresh card.
  • Timing: cast when at least two evasive creatures or repeat token production can attack safely; cycle when behind, missing land/interaction, or lacking attackers.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}{U} as an enchantment or {2} and discard to cycle; outputs combat-damage card draw or one immediate card from cycling.
  • Mode map: enchantment mode rewards any creature you control damaging a player and can snowball with Faeries; cycling mode discards Reconnaissance Mission to draw one card and does not create a permanent engine.
  • Partners / packages: best with Alela tokens, Bitterblossom tokens, Faerie Mastermind, Vendilion Clique, Brazen Borrower, Rankle, Master of Pranks, and Scion of Oona.
  • Role peers: Bident of Thassa and Coastal Piracy are similar combat-draw enchantments; Reconnaissance Mission is the one with cycling.
  • Failure modes: casting into an empty board, attacking into lethal crackback just to draw, or cycling when a protected evasive board is ready.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against low-flyer boards and control; weak when opponents have flying blockers or sweepers ready.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not cast it until your creatures can connect; cycle it if you need land or interaction now.

Bident of Thassa

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core combat-draw artifact/enchantment engine.
  • Role type: engine payoff; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: draws when your creatures deal combat damage to players and can pay {1}{U}, {T} to force opponents' creatures to attack this turn if able.
  • Timing: cast after you have evasive bodies or token production; activate the forced-attack ability when Propaganda, goad, blockers, or opponent shields make attacks hurt opponents more than you.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}{U} to cast or {1}{U} plus tap to activate; outputs combat cards and table-combat pressure.
  • Mode map: static trigger mode draws from your creatures damaging players; activated mode makes creatures your opponents control attack this turn if able, which can expose opponents to each other but may also increase attacks toward you if taxes/blocks do not deter them.
  • Partners / packages: attackers from Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Brazen Borrower, and Rankle, Master of Pranks; defense from Propaganda and Alela goad improves activation safety.
  • Role peers: Reconnaissance Mission and Coastal Piracy also draw from combat; Bident adds forced attacks and is an artifact.
  • Failure modes: activating when opponents can profitably attack you, casting with no attackers, or exposing it to artifact/enchantment hate before drawing.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in board stalls and against creature decks that can be redirected; weaker against creature-light combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Bident for card draw first; only activate the attack-forcing ability when you are safe from the attacks it creates.

Coastal Piracy

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core combat-draw payoff.
  • Role type: engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: draws a card whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to an opponent, turning small flying Faeries into hand refill.
  • Timing: cast when Alela, Bitterblossom, Oona, or existing flyers can connect this turn or next; avoid tapping out when you cannot attack safely.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}{U}; outputs card draw from combat damage to opponents only.
  • Partners / packages: works with Alela tokens, Bitterblossom tokens, Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Vendilion Clique, Brazen Borrower, Quickling, Rankle, Master of Pranks, and Scion of Oona.
  • Role peers: Reconnaissance Mission also draws from creatures damaging players and can cycle; Bident of Thassa adds forced attacks; Kindred Discovery draws on chosen-type entries or attacks.
  • Failure modes: casting into no attackers, attacking into bad blocks for one card, or forgetting it does not trigger from damage to planeswalkers or battles.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against decks without flying defense; side down when combat is locked or opponents win before repeated attacks matter.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast Coastal Piracy only when you already have flyers or a reliable token maker.

Kindred Discovery

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core Faerie draw payoff.
  • Role type: engine payoff; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: choose Faerie as it enters in this deck, then draw whenever a creature you control of the chosen type enters or attacks.
  • Timing: cast when you have Alela, Bitterblossom, Oona, or multiple Faeries ready; avoid committing five mana into a board wipe without protection.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{U}{U}; outputs draw from Faerie entries and Faerie attacks after the chosen type is set.
  • Partners / packages: strongest with Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, Mistbind Clique, and Scion of Oona.
  • Role peers: Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, and Coastal Piracy need combat damage; Kindred Discovery also draws on Faerie entries and attacks.
  • Failure modes: choosing a non-Faerie type without a rare board-specific reason, casting with no Faerie production, or drawing aggressively into hand-size problems without Reliquary Tower.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: backbreaking in slow games; high-risk into open enchantment removal or combo turns where five mana must stay open.
  • Low-skill guidance: name Faerie, then prioritize making or attacking with Faeries while keeping protection up.

Mystic Remora

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core early draw-tax engine.
  • Role type: engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: taxes opponents' noncreature spells by offering you a draw unless that player pays {4}, buying cards while you keep mana open.
  • Timing: strongest on turn one or before spell-heavy turns; pay cumulative upkeep only while expected noncreature spells justify the growing mana cost.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U} and cumulative upkeep {1} per age counter; outputs optional card draw from opponents' noncreature spells unless they pay {4}.
  • Partners / packages: extra cards find Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, An Offer You Can't Refuse, Drown in the Loch, Brainstorm, Ponder, and land drops.
  • Role peers: Rhystic Study taxes all opponent spells for {1} but costs three and has no cumulative upkeep.
  • Failure modes: paying upkeep when it prevents holding key interaction, casting late after opponents have emptied hands, or expecting draws from creature spells.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against artifact ramp, storm, control, and combo; weak against creature-heavy boards that can ignore it.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast early, draw when opponents decline to pay, and stop paying upkeep once it blocks your interaction mana.

Rhystic Study

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core draw-tax engine.
  • Role type: engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: makes every opponent spell ask whether its controller pays {1}; if not, you may draw, steadily refilling permission and flash threats.
  • Timing: cast early when not facing an immediate must-counter; protect it if the table is already constrained by mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}; outputs optional card draw from opponent spells unless their controller pays {1}.
  • Partners / packages: drawn cards fuel Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Counterspell, Alela, Cunning Conqueror, and end-step flash plays.
  • Role peers: Mystic Remora is cheaper and stronger against noncreature spells early; Rhystic Study is broader and persistent.
  • Failure modes: tapping out into a decisive threat, forgetting optional draw, or overprotecting it when a win condition must be countered instead.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in multiplayer pods where opponents chain spells; weaker if opponents can pay or win through combat immediately.
  • Low-skill guidance: play it early when safe, take the draw when offered, and do not counter small spells only to protect Rhystic if a bigger threat is coming.

Court of Cunning

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton/flex monarch mill engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; reach/finisher.
  • Deck-specific job: makes you the monarch on entry, then mills any number of target players for two at your upkeep, or ten each if you are still the monarch.
  • Timing: cast when flyers, Propaganda, removal, or goad can defend monarch; avoid if becoming monarch invites easy attacks you cannot stop.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U}{U}; outputs monarch card draw through the monarch rules and upkeep mill targeting.
  • Partners / packages: defended by Propaganda, Alela goad triggers, Bitterblossom tokens, Pongify, Reality Shift, Go for the Throat, and Cyclonic Rift.
  • Role peers: The One Ring and combat-draw enchantments also draw cards; Court adds monarch and mill pressure.
  • Failure modes: giving the table a monarch to steal, milling graveyard decks without hate, or targeting players without considering who benefits from graveyard cards.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good in stalled control boards; risky against evasive aggro and graveyard recursion unless Dauthi Voidwalker, Bojuka Bog, or Leyline of the Void is active.
  • Low-skill guidance: only cast Court when you can keep attackers away; if graveyards help opponents, be careful with the mill targets.

Propaganda

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core defensive enchantment.
  • Role type: lifegain/stabilization; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: taxes attacks at you by requiring {2} for each creature attacking you, buying time for Alela tokens, draw engines, and goad to redirect combat.
  • Timing: cast before creature decks develop lethal boards or before becoming monarch with Court of Cunning; less urgent against spell-combo tables.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}; outputs attack taxation against you, not against planeswalkers unless attack declarations involve you as the player.
  • Partners / packages: combines with Alela goad, Bident of Thassa forced attacks, Court of Cunning, Opposition, and spot removal Pongify, Reality Shift, Go for the Throat, Snuff Out, and Deadly Rollick.
  • Role peers: Opposition can tap attackers or lands; Propaganda passively taxes each attack.
  • Failure modes: assuming it stops noncombat damage, sacrifice, or attacks at other players; casting it after lethal attackers are already declared.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against go-wide and commander combat; weak against combo, burn, and noncreature engines.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Propaganda early against creature decks so opponents must pay before attacking you.

Opposition

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core token-to-tap engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; protection/evasion; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: turns untapped creatures you control into taps for target artifact, creature, or land, letting Faerie tokens deny mana, blockers, attackers, or activated artifacts.
  • Timing: cast when you already have repeatable creature supply from Alela, Bitterblossom, or Oona; activate in upkeeps to deny mana, before combat to tap attackers/blockers, or before key activated abilities.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}{U} and untapped creatures; outputs tapped target artifacts, creatures, or lands.
  • Partners / packages: fuel from Alela tokens, Bitterblossom, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Faerie Mastermind, and stolen creatures from Sower of Temptation.
  • Role peers: Mistbind Clique taps one player's lands once; Opposition repeatedly taps chosen permanents.
  • Failure modes: tapping creatures needed for lethal attacks, combat-draw triggers, or blocking; targeting permanents that can still act later; overcommitting into sweepers.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against big mana, creature combat, and artifact engines; weaker when opponents rely on spells already in hand and instant-speed mana.
  • Low-skill guidance: use spare tokens first, and never tap your last blocker if an opponent can kill you in combat.

An Offer You Can't Refuse

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core cheap stack interaction.
  • Role type: interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target noncreature spell for {U}, trading the spell for two Treasure tokens for that spell's controller.
  • Timing: use on game-winning noncreature spells, sweepers, removal that breaks Alela, or protected engines; avoid on low-impact spells because two Treasures can fuel the next threat.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U} and a noncreature spell on the stack; outputs a countered spell and two Treasure tokens for its controller.
  • Partners / packages: protects Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Rhystic Study, Kindred Discovery, Opposition, The One Ring, and finisher turns.
  • Role peers: Swan Song is also one mana but hits enchantment, instant, or sorcery spells and gives a Bird; Spell Pierce taxes noncreature spells instead of hard-countering.
  • Failure modes: countering a harmless spell and ramping the opponent, targeting a creature spell illegally, or using it when Counterspell can answer without giving mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against combo, sweepers, planeswalkers, and prison pieces; dangerous against big-mana decks if the Treasure refund enables the payoff.
  • Low-skill guidance: save it for a noncreature spell that matters enough to give the opponent two Treasures.

Swan Song

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core cheap stack interaction.
  • Role type: interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target enchantment, instant, or sorcery spell for {U}, giving that spell's controller a 2/2 blue Bird creature token with flying.
  • Timing: hold for sweepers, tutors, combo spells, removal, or enchantments that beat Alela; spend on lower-value targets only if the 2/2 Bird is safer than the spell.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U} and an enchantment/instant/sorcery spell on the stack; outputs a countered spell and an opposing flying 2/2.
  • Partners / packages: protects Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, Rhystic Study, Opposition, and Kindred Discovery.
  • Role peers: An Offer You Can't Refuse hits any noncreature spell and gives Treasures; Spell Pierce taxes noncreature spells.
  • Failure modes: trying to counter a creature, artifact, or planeswalker spell; ignoring that the Bird can block Faeries or pressure monarch; wasting it when the token matters more than the stopped spell.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: high value against spellslinger and enchantment-based engines; weaker against creature-heavy boards.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Swan Song on the spell that would break your engine or win the game, not the first legal instant.

Flusterstorm

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core stack-fight specialist.
  • Role type: interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target instant or sorcery spell unless its controller pays {1}, then storm copies it for each spell cast before it this turn, helping win stack-heavy turns.
  • Timing: strongest after opponents cast multiple spells or during counter wars; weaker as the first spell against untapped opponents who can pay.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U} and target instant or sorcery spell on the stack; outputs one or more tax-counter copies that may target the same or different instant/sorcery spells.
  • Partners / packages: protects Alela and engines during combo turns alongside Counterspell, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, and Mana Drain.
  • Role peers: Spell Pierce taxes noncreature spells for {2}; Flusterstorm scales with storm count but only hits instant or sorcery spells.
  • Failure modes: targeting non-instant/non-sorcery spells, firing before storm count grows, or splitting copies when one decisive spell needs all taxes.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against storm, counter wars, and tutor chains; poor against resolved permanents and creature spells.
  • Low-skill guidance: wait until the stack gets busy, then aim enough copies at the spell that must not resolve.

Fierce Guardianship

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core free commander-protection counter.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target noncreature spell, and can be cast for no mana if you control your commander.
  • Timing: preserve for sweepers, combo noncreature spells, and removal that would undo Alela or a key engine; free mode is strongest when you tap low for commander or finisher.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U} normally or no mana if you control Alela; outputs a countered noncreature spell.
  • Partners / packages: protects Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Kindred Discovery, Opposition, The One Ring, Hullbreaker Horror, and Oona, Queen of the Fae.
  • Role peers: Force of Negation can also be free off-turn but requires exiling a blue card; Fierce requires commander on battlefield.
  • Failure modes: assuming it is free when Alela is absent, targeting creature spells, or wasting it on a spell that Spell Pierce or Swan Song could handle.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best against control/combo and sweeper-heavy pods; less useful against creature boards.
  • Low-skill guidance: when Alela is on board, treat this as your best shield for a dangerous noncreature spell.

Counterspell

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core hard counter.
  • Role type: interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target spell with no card-type restriction, giving the deck clean stack coverage if {U}{U} is available.
  • Timing: hold for the spell that changes the game: combo payoff, sweeper, commander, removal on Alela, or engine that will outdraw you.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}{U} and a spell on the stack; outputs a countered spell.
  • Partners / packages: protects Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Rhystic Study, Bitterblossom, The One Ring, Opposition, Hullbreaker Horror, and combat-draw engines.
  • Role peers: Mana Drain also hard-counters and adds colorless mana next main phase; Arcane Denial is easier to cast but gives cards.
  • Failure modes: spending double-blue on bait, leaving no blue for later stack fights, or trying to answer a permanent after it has resolved.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: universal against stack-based threats; less useful once a permanent has already resolved.
  • Low-skill guidance: only cast Counterspell while the dangerous card is still a spell on the stack.

Arcane Denial

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core flexible counter.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target spell for {1}{U}, then that spell's controller may draw up to two cards at the next turn's upkeep and you draw one.
  • Timing: use when the spell must be stopped and the extra cards are less dangerous than resolution; prefer later in a turn cycle if opponents cannot immediately use the cards.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U} and a spell on the stack; outputs a countered spell, delayed card(s) for that spell's controller, and delayed card draw for you.
  • Partners / packages: draw downside can be punished by Orcish Bowmasters or Notion Thief if timing lines up.
  • Role peers: Counterspell avoids giving cards but needs {U}{U}; An Offer You Can't Refuse gives Treasures instead of cards and only hits noncreature spells.
  • Failure modes: countering medium spells and refilling the scariest opponent, forgetting the draw occurs at next upkeep, or using it when a narrower counter has lower downside.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good against must-stop haymakers; risky against combo/control opponents that can use the extra cards immediately.
  • Low-skill guidance: Arcane Denial is for spells you cannot let resolve; do not use it just because it is available.

Mana Drain

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core hard counter and ramp swing.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target spell and adds colorless mana equal to that spell's mana value at the beginning of your next main phase.
  • Timing: save for expensive spells when possible, but use on cheaper decisive spells if losing is otherwise likely.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}{U} and a spell on the stack; outputs a counter plus future {C} for generic costs, artifacts, commander tax, The One Ring, Hullbreaker Horror, or Oona, Queen of the Fae activations.
  • Partners / packages: future colorless mana helps cast Alela, Cunning Conqueror through tax, Kindred Discovery, Opposition, The One Ring, Hullbreaker Horror, and Oona, Queen of the Fae.
  • Role peers: Counterspell is the same hard counter without ramp; Force of Will is free at card/life cost.
  • Failure modes: treating colorless mana as blue/black, countering a low-value spell just for mana, or tapping out before using the next-main-phase mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against big mana and commander haymakers; still acceptable against compact combo if the spell must be stopped.
  • Low-skill guidance: counter the most dangerous spell, and remember the extra mana next main phase is colorless only.

Force of Will

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core free hard counter.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target spell while letting you pay 1 life and exile a blue card from hand instead of paying {3}{U}{U}.
  • Timing: reserve for decisive spells when tapped out or when mana must stay open; hard-cast only in long games where five mana is available.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes either {3}{U}{U} or 1 life plus a blue card from hand; outputs a countered spell.
  • Partners / packages: blue pitch candidates include context-dependent excess Brainstorm, Ponder, Preordain, Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Kindred Discovery, Rhystic Study, or flash Faeries, but do not pitch the only answer/engine you need.
  • Role peers: Force of Negation is free only on opponents' turns and only counters noncreature spells; Force of Will is broader.
  • Failure modes: pitching the card that solves the next turn, using it on bait, or paying life under lethal pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest against combo, sweepers, and must-answer commanders; weaker when the hand has no expendable blue card.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Force only when the spell would seriously hurt you or win the game for someone.

Force of Negation

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core free off-turn noncreature counter.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target noncreature spell and exiles it if countered this way; on a turn that is not yours, you may exile a blue card from hand rather than pay {1}{U}{U}.
  • Timing: best on opponents' turns against combo, sweepers, tutors, and removal; hard-cast on your turn only when needed and mana supports it.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U}{U} or, off-turn, a blue pitch card; outputs a countered and exiled noncreature spell.
  • Partners / packages: protects Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Opposition, Kindred Discovery, The One Ring, and Hullbreaker Horror commitment turns.
  • Role peers: Fierce Guardianship is free with commander and also hits noncreature spells; Force of Will hits any spell and costs life plus blue card.
  • Failure modes: trying to counter creature spells, assuming free mode works on your own turn, or pitching needed blue card flow.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against graveyard recursion spells because exiling the countered spell can matter; weak against creature-board pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: on opponents' turns, use it for a dangerous noncreature spell if you can spare a blue card.

Spell Pierce

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core cheap tempo counter.
  • Role type: interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target noncreature spell unless its controller pays {2}, trading one blue mana for early protection and tempo.
  • Timing: strongest early or when opponents tap low; weak late if the controller can easily pay.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U} and a noncreature spell on the stack; outputs a tax counter if the controller cannot or will not pay {2}.
  • Partners / packages: protects early Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Mystic Remora, Bitterblossom, Rhystic Study, and The One Ring turns.
  • Role peers: Swan Song and An Offer You Can't Refuse are one-mana counters with resource downsides; Spell Pierce has no token/Treasure downside but can be paid through.
  • Failure modes: using it when the opponent can pay, targeting a creature spell, or waiting until late game with no tax leverage.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against early tutors, removal, ramp artifacts, and planeswalkers; weak in big-mana late games.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Spell Pierce early on important noncreature spells while opponents have little spare mana.

Drown in the Loch

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core graveyard-scaling flexible interaction.
  • Role type: modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: either counters a spell or destroys a creature if its mana value is less than or equal to the number of cards in that object's controller's graveyard.
  • Timing: wait until the relevant opponent's graveyard count supports the target; use graveyard hate carefully because Bojuka Bog, Dauthi Voidwalker, or Leyline of the Void can reduce future Drown legality.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}{B} and graveyard-count conditions; outputs either a countered spell or destroyed creature.
  • Mode map: counter mode targets a spell with mana value no greater than the number of cards in that spell's controller's graveyard; destroy mode targets a creature with mana value no greater than the number of cards in that creature's controller's graveyard.
  • Partners / packages: Court of Cunning and normal game actions can fill opposing graveyards; Bojuka Bog, Dauthi Voidwalker, and Leyline of the Void may conflict with Drown by emptying or replacing graveyard movement.
  • Role peers: Counterspell has no graveyard condition; Go for the Throat destroys nonartifact creatures without graveyard count.
  • Failure modes: targeting above the graveyard threshold, using graveyard hate first, or trying to destroy noncreature permanents.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in longer games and against graveyard-filled opponents; weak early against empty graveyards.
  • Low-skill guidance: count that opponent's graveyard before choosing Drown's mode.

Go for the Throat

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core creature removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target nonartifact creature at instant speed, protecting life total, Alela, and combat-draw attacks.
  • Timing: hold for creatures that threaten lethal, combo, repeated card advantage, or block/race your Faerie pressure; do not spend on creatures that goad, Propaganda, or tokens can contain.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{B} and a nonartifact creature target; outputs destruction.
  • Partners / packages: complements Snuff Out, Deadly Rollick, Reality Shift, Pongify, Drown in the Loch, and Sheoldred's Edict.
  • Role peers: Snuff Out is free with a Swamp but cannot hit black creatures; Deadly Rollick exiles creatures and is free with commander; Pongify hits artifacts but gives an Ape.
  • Failure modes: targeting artifact creatures illegally, spending it on replaceable attackers, or using it where exile from Deadly Rollick/Reality Shift is needed.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best against creature commanders and midrange engines; weaker against artifact-creature decks and creature-light combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: save it for the creature that will kill you, stop your engine, or enable a combo.

Snuff Out

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core free removal with life cost.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target nonblack creature and prevents regeneration, with alternate cost of 4 life if you control a Swamp.
  • Timing: use free mode when mana must stay open or you are tapped out; avoid paying 4 life when red pressure, commander damage, or combat math makes life the bottleneck.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{B} or 4 life if you control a Swamp; outputs destruction of a nonblack creature that cannot be regenerated.
  • Partners / packages: Swamp sources include Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Sunken Hollow, Swamp, and black-producing lands with Swamp type only where listed; fetchlands can find Island/Swamp duals according to their restrictions.
  • Role peers: Go for the Throat costs mana and misses artifact creatures; Snuff Out misses black creatures and costs life when free.
  • Failure modes: targeting black creatures, paying life into lethal pressure, or assuming any black-producing land is a Swamp.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent when protecting tapped-out Alela turns; risky against burn and aggressive combat decks.
  • Low-skill guidance: free Snuff Out is powerful, but do not pay 4 life unless the creature is more dangerous than that life loss.

Deadly Rollick

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core commander-conditioned exile removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: exiles target creature, and can be cast for no mana if you control Alela.
  • Timing: save for commanders, indestructible creatures, graveyard-recursion threats, or creatures that must not die into a graveyard; free mode protects tap-low commander turns.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{B} or no mana if you control your commander; outputs exile of target creature.
  • Partners / packages: complements Go for the Throat, Snuff Out, Reality Shift, Pongify, and sideboard Sheoldred's Edict.
  • Role peers: Reality Shift also exiles target creature but gives a manifested 2/2; Deadly Rollick has no replacement body and is free with commander.
  • Failure modes: assuming free mode works without Alela, using premium exile on a low-impact creature, or trying to target noncreature permanents.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: high value against graveyard commanders, indestructible threats, and single-creature combo; less critical against disposable token boards.
  • Low-skill guidance: if Alela is out, keep Deadly Rollick for the creature that would break your board or kill you.

Reality Shift

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core blue exile removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: exiles target creature, then its controller manifests the top card of their library as a face-down 2/2 creature that may be turned face up if it is a creature card for its mana cost.
  • Timing: use on recursive, indestructible, or must-exile creatures; consider whether the manifested 2/2 matters for combat or can become dangerous later.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U} and a creature target; outputs exile plus a manifested 2/2 for that creature's controller.
  • Partners / packages: clears blockers for Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, and Coastal Piracy; protects Alela from lethal creature pressure.
  • Role peers: Deadly Rollick exiles without manifest if commander is present/free; Pongify destroys and gives a 3/3 Ape.
  • Failure modes: using it on a low-impact creature and giving a relevant blocker, forgetting manifest can become face up if it is a creature card, or targeting noncreatures.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against graveyard recursion and indestructible creatures; worse against decks that can exploit extra bodies.
  • Low-skill guidance: exile creatures that must not come back; do not use Reality Shift just to remove a small attacker.

Pongify

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core one-mana creature removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target creature, prevents regeneration, and gives that creature's controller a 3/3 green Ape creature token.
  • Timing: use when one blue mana must answer a commander/combo creature or when the 3/3 token is less dangerous than the original creature.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U} and a creature target; outputs destruction plus an opposing 3/3 Ape token.
  • Partners / packages: Propaganda, goad from Alela, and flying attackers help ignore the 3/3 ground body; Cyclonic Rift can later clear tokens if needed.
  • Role peers: Reality Shift exiles and gives a manifested 2/2; Go for the Throat destroys nonartifact creatures without a token.
  • Failure modes: giving a lethal attacker, destroying a creature that benefits from dying, or using it where exile is required.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against compact combo creatures and commanders; risky against sacrifice/aristocrat decks.
  • Low-skill guidance: ask whether the 3/3 Ape is safer than the creature; if yes and the creature matters, Pongify it.

Cyclonic Rift

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core bounce reset.
  • Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
  • Deck-specific job: bounces target nonland permanent you don't control for {1}{U}, or overloads for {6}{U} to return each nonland permanent you don't control.
  • Timing: normal mode saves a turn, clears a blocker, or resets a problem permanent; overload should usually wait for a decisive attack, emergency survival, or a turn where opponents cannot rebuild before you capitalize.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U} or overload {6}{U}; outputs temporary nonland-permanent removal.
  • Mode map: normal mode targets one nonland permanent you don't control; overload changes "target" to "each" and returns all nonland permanents you don't control without targeting them.
  • Partners / packages: overload sets up attacks from Alela tokens, Bitterblossom, Rankle, Master of Pranks, Oona, Queen of the Fae, and combat-draw enchantments.
  • Role peers: Brazen Borrower bounces one opposing nonland permanent and later becomes a creature; Cyclonic Rift is the mass reset.
  • Failure modes: bouncing something that recasts profitably, overloading too early, or forgetting lands stay.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: high impact against board stalls, token armies, and prison permanents; weaker if opponents can immediately win on the stack.
  • Low-skill guidance: use normal Rift to survive; save overloaded Rift for a huge swing or emergency.

Feed the Swarm

  • Deck role: main deck 1 copy and sideboard 1 copy, core/sideboard sorcery answer to creatures or enchantments.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target creature or enchantment an opponent controls, giving Dimir a way to answer enchantments that counters missed, at the cost of life equal to that permanent's mana value.
  • Timing: because it is a sorcery, cast in your main phase before combat or before holding up mana would matter; side in the second copy when enchantments or must-kill creatures are a known axis.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{B} and life equal to the destroyed permanent's mana value; outputs destruction of target creature or enchantment an opponent controls.
  • Partners / packages: complements Counterspell, Negate, Cyclonic Rift, Thoughtseize, and Duress against prison/enchantment strategies.
  • Role peers: Go for the Throat, Snuff Out, Deadly Rollick, Reality Shift, and Pongify are instant creature answers but do not answer enchantments.
  • Failure modes: losing too much life, trying to target your own permanent or non-enchantment noncreature, or tapping out main phase into a combo turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: essential against resolved enchantments and creature engines; risky against burn and fast combat.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it main phase on a creature/enchantment that matters, and check your life total before paying the life loss.

Dress Down

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton/flex flash text-reset answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: flashes in, draws a card, makes creatures lose all abilities until end step, then sacrifices itself at the beginning of the end step.
  • Timing: use at the exact window where creature abilities decide combat, combo, enters triggers still relevant by rules timing, or static text; it is poor into an empty board.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U}; outputs one card draw and a temporary ability wipe for creatures.
  • Partners / packages: protects against creature-text combo while preserving stack interaction from Counterspell, Force of Will, and Fierce Guardianship.
  • Role peers: Pongify, Reality Shift, and Deadly Rollick remove one creature; Dress Down temporarily blanks many creatures without killing them.
  • Failure modes: casting after the relevant triggered ability resolved, blanking your own Faeries' flying or Alela's combat-goad text at a bad time, or assuming it stops noncreature abilities.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against creature-combo, combat keyword boards, and protection abilities; weak against noncreature combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast Dress Down only when creature text matters right now, and remember your creatures lose abilities too.

Brainstorm

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core instant card selection.
  • Role type: card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: draws three cards then puts two cards from your hand on top of your library, fixing hands, hiding cards, and setting up shuffle effects.
  • Timing: best with Polluted Delta, Flooded Strand, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Scalding Tarn, or Prismatic Vista available to shuffle away unwanted cards; also use in response to discard or to hit an immediate land/answer.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}; outputs card look depth but not raw card advantage unless paired with shuffle or top-card synergies.
  • Partners / packages: fetches can shuffle away excess finishers, redundant tapped lands, or wrong interaction; Mystical Tutor and Vampiric Tutor can place a card on top before Brainstorm draws it.
  • Role peers: Ponder and Preordain are sorcery-speed one-mana selection; Brainstorm is instant and hand-protective.
  • Failure modes: locking two bad cards on top with no shuffle, casting before deciding land/fetch sequence, or using it when counter mana must remain up.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against discard and for digging to interaction; weaker if used casually with no shuffle or immediate need.
  • Low-skill guidance: if possible, Brainstorm before cracking a fetch, put back bad cards, then shuffle them away.

Ponder

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core sorcery card selection.
  • Role type: card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: looks at the top three cards, lets you put them back in any order, optionally shuffle, then draws a card.
  • Timing: use early to find lands, interaction, or an engine; cast before land drop when current mana already supports it and the top three may change the land decision.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U} at sorcery speed; outputs one drawn card and top-deck control or shuffle.
  • Partners / packages: digs for Command Tower, Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Counterspell, Mystic Remora, Bitterblossom, or Rhystic Study depending on the bottleneck.
  • Role peers: Preordain scries two then draws; Brainstorm is instant and better with fetchlands.
  • Failure modes: keeping a weak top three without shuffle, casting into a turn where holding Spell Pierce matters more, or taking a slow engine when a land/answer is needed.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: important in mulligan-light hands and early turns; lower value once draw engines are active.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Ponder to find the missing land, color, or answer for the next two turns.

Preordain

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core sorcery card selection.
  • Role type: card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: scries 2, then draws a card, smoothing early mana and answer quality without needing a shuffle.
  • Timing: cast early when looking for blue/black sources, a cheap counter, or a setup engine; play land first only if needed to cast Preordain or preserve interaction.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U} at sorcery speed; outputs one card and bottom/top filtering.
  • Partners / packages: digs for early Mystic Remora, Bitterblossom, Dauthi Voidwalker, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, or removal.
  • Role peers: Ponder sees three with shuffle option; Brainstorm is instant but can trap bad cards without shuffle.
  • Failure modes: keeping slow five-plus-mana cards when missing land or interaction, casting it after using all blue mana needed for Spell Pierce, or bottoming the only black source.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good in uncertain openers; still useful late to find a specific answer.
  • Low-skill guidance: bottom cards that do not help the next two turns.

Fact or Fiction

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, singleton/flex instant card-advantage selection.
  • Role type: card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: reveals the top five cards, lets an opponent split them into two piles, then you choose one pile for hand and put the other into graveyard.
  • Timing: cast on the last safe opponent end step after holding up interaction; cast earlier only if you must find an answer before untapping.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{U}; outputs cards in hand and graveyard fuel for Dig Through Time or Takenuma, Abandoned Mire targets.
  • Partners / packages: finds combinations such as Counterspell plus land, Cyclonic Rift plus protection, or Rhystic Study plus interaction.
  • Role peers: Dig Through Time looks seven and chooses two with delve; Fact or Fiction gives opponent pile agency but can net more cards.
  • Failure modes: taking the larger pile over the pile that solves the board, tapping out before a dangerous main phase, or filling graveyard when opponents benefit from your graveyard being stocked.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in control/midrange; slow against fast combat unless it finds immediate removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the pile that fixes the current problem, not automatically the pile with more cards.

Dig Through Time

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core instant deep selection.
  • Role type: card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: uses delve to reduce generic cost by exiling cards from your graveyard, looks at the top seven, puts two into hand, and bottoms the rest.
  • Timing: cast after graveyard naturally fills and you can still hold or find interaction; avoid delving away cards needed for Takenuma, Abandoned Mire unless the two selected cards matter more.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {6}{U}{U} reduced by exiling graveyard cards for generic mana; outputs the best two of seven cards.
  • Partners / packages: finds pairs like Force of Will plus blue card, Cyclonic Rift plus counter, Deadly Rollick plus land, or engine plus protection.
  • Role peers: Fact or Fiction can provide more cards but gives pile choice to an opponent; Dig gives you exact selection.
  • Failure modes: exiling graveyard too aggressively for future Drown in the Loch context or Takenuma, casting into graveyard hate, or choosing value over survival.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent after long stack fights; slow before graveyard has fuel.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast Dig when you can pay with graveyard cards and pick the two cards that answer the next threat.

Mystical Tutor

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core instant/sorcery top-deck tutor.
  • Role type: tutor/search.
  • Deck-specific job: searches your library for an instant or sorcery card, reveals it, shuffles, and puts it on top for your next draw or immediate draw setup.
  • Timing: usually cast at the end step before your turn; cast sooner only if a draw effect will access the tutored answer before a threat resolves.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U} and your next draw; outputs a revealed instant or sorcery on top.
  • Partners / packages: targets include Cyclonic Rift for board reset, Counterspell/Mana Drain/Force of Will/Force of Negation for stack protection, Deadly Rollick/Snuff Out/Reality Shift/Pongify for creatures, Feed the Swarm for enchantments, Fact or Fiction/Dig Through Time for cards, and sideboard Toxic Deluge when boarded.
  • Role peers: Vampiric Tutor can find any card at life cost; Demonic Tutor puts any card into hand but is sorcery speed.
  • Failure modes: tutoring a card you cannot draw in time, revealing a plan opponents can counterplay, or searching a permanent illegally.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best when a specific instant/sorcery answers the next turn; weaker when you need a permanent engine.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it at the last opponent end step for the exact answer you need next.

Vampiric Tutor

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core any-card top-deck tutor.
  • Role type: tutor/search.
  • Deck-specific job: searches for any card, shuffles, puts it on top, and costs 2 life, turning the next draw into the best card for the board.
  • Timing: cast at the end step before your turn unless you can draw immediately or must set up an emergency answer; account for life loss under pressure.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {B}, 2 life, and your next draw; outputs any registered card on top of library.
  • Partners / packages: finds Alela, Cunning Conqueror support like Lightning Greaves, engines Rhystic Study/Mystic Remora/The One Ring, reset Cyclonic Rift, hate Dauthi Voidwalker/Bojuka Bog, or finisher Hullbreaker Horror/Oona, Queen of the Fae.
  • Role peers: Demonic Tutor puts the card into hand without life loss but costs sorcery-speed {1}{B}; Mystical Tutor is narrower but blue.
  • Failure modes: paying 2 life into lethal, tutoring value when survival is at risk, or placing a card on top before an opponent discard/mill effect.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest when the current bottleneck is clear; dangerous against aggressive/red decks if life is low.
  • Low-skill guidance: tutor for the card that fixes the immediate problem, not always the flashiest card.

Demonic Tutor

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core any-card hand tutor.
  • Role type: tutor/search.
  • Deck-specific job: searches your library for any card, puts it into your hand, then shuffles, solving the current bottleneck directly.
  • Timing: cast main phase when you can still use or protect the tutored card; avoid tapping out if opponents can win before you untap.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{B} and sorcery timing; outputs any card into hand.
  • Partners / packages: tutor for mana acceleration/fixing with Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, Fellwar Stone, Command Tower, Watery Grave, or Underground Sea; for board resets with Cyclonic Rift or sideboard Toxic Deluge; for stack protection with Counterspell, Force of Will, Force of Negation, or Fierce Guardianship; for card flow with Rhystic Study, The One Ring, Mystic Remora, or Fact or Fiction; for closing with Hullbreaker Horror or Oona, Queen of the Fae.
  • Role peers: Vampiric Tutor is instant and top-deck at 2 life; Demonic Tutor is sorcery but immediate hand access.
  • Failure modes: tutoring a finisher while dying, casting into open counter mana without Counterspell, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, or Swan Song, or ignoring boarded answers such as Toxic Deluge, Annul, Bitter Triumph, Flusterstorm, Force Spike, Ratchet Bomb, Cry of the Carnarium, Blue Elemental Blast, Red Elemental Blast, Stifle, or Sheoldred's Edict.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: premium in every matchup because it adapts to the axis; use revealed information to choose.
  • Low-skill guidance: name the resource you lack, then Demonic Tutor for the card that supplies it.

Sol Ring

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: accelerates generic costs, commander tax, artifacts, and expensive finishers while leaving colored lands for interaction.
  • Timing: cast early when it enables another rock, The One Ring, Alela with protection, or faster interaction; do not keep hands where Sol Ring is the only mana plan and colored spells are stranded.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}; taps for {C}{C}, which pays generic costs but not {U} or {B} requirements.
  • Partners / packages: helps cast Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, Fellwar Stone, Lightning Greaves, Skullclamp, The One Ring, Hullbreaker Horror, and commander tax on Alela.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, and Fellwar Stone provide colored mana; Sol Ring is fastest but colorless.
  • Failure modes: assuming it casts Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, or Feed the Swarm; tapping out for it when a one-mana counter is needed.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest in openers; still useful for late commander recasts.
  • Low-skill guidance: Sol Ring is acceleration, not color fixing; make sure you still have blue and black.

Arcane Signet

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core colored mana rock.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for one mana of any color in Alela's blue-black color identity, fixing either color while supporting draw-go turns.
  • Timing: cast early when it does not expose you to a must-answer spell; best when it enables Alela plus interaction on following turns.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}; outputs {U} or {B} in this deck.
  • Partners / packages: supports Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Feed the Swarm, Opposition, and commander tax.
  • Role peers: Talisman of Dominance also fixes but may deal 1 damage; Dimir Signet needs {1} to activate; Fellwar Stone depends on opponent lands.
  • Failure modes: casting it instead of holding critical interaction, or assuming it produces colors outside Alela's color identity.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in most openers; less urgent if immediate stack interaction is required.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Arcane Signet early if safe because it fixes both blue and black for later turns.

Dimir Signet

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core colored mana rock.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: filters {1} into {U}{B}, helping cast double-color turns and Alela while using spare colorless/generic mana.
  • Timing: cast on turn two when it sets up Alela or interaction; remember it cannot make mana without another mana to activate.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2} to cast and {1}, {T} to produce {U}{B}.
  • Partners / packages: works well with Sol Ring, Reliquary Tower, Cavern of Souls colorless mode, Secluded Courtyard colorless mode, and generic mana from Mana Drain.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet taps without activation input; Talisman of Dominance taps immediately but may cost life for colored mana.
  • Failure modes: relying on it as your only source with no mana to filter, tapping out before interaction, or forgetting it makes both colors together.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong for commander-tax recasts and double-spell turns; slower against hyper-fast combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: Dimir Signet needs one mana to turn on, so sequence another source beside it.

Talisman of Dominance

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core fast colored mana rock.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {C} safely or {U}/{B} at the cost of 1 damage to you, enabling early interaction and Alela turns.
  • Timing: cast early when colored access matters; use colorless mode when paying generic costs to avoid unnecessary life loss.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}; outputs {C} or {U}/{B} with 1 self-damage.
  • Partners / packages: casts Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, Go for the Throat, Feed the Swarm, Alela, Cunning Conqueror, and Rhystic Study.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet fixes without damage; Dimir Signet needs activation mana; Underground River is a land with similar pain-mana tension.
  • Failure modes: taking damage when colorless would pay the cost, ignoring life pressure from Bitterblossom, Snuff Out, Thoughtseize, Toxic Deluge, or The One Ring.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: efficient against control/combo; manage life carefully against burn and aggro.
  • Low-skill guidance: tap for colorless when you can; only take 1 damage when you need blue or black.

Fellwar Stone

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core conditional mana rock.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for one mana of any color that a land an opponent controls could produce, often fixing blue or black in multiplayer but dependent on visible opponent lands.
  • Timing: cast early if opponent lands already provide useful colors; do not rely on it for Alela or counters if no opponent land can produce the needed color.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}; outputs only colors currently available from opponents' lands.
  • Partners / packages: supports Alela recasts, interaction, and engines when table lands make {U} or {B} available.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet is reliable color fixing; Fellwar Stone can be excellent but table-dependent.
  • Failure modes: assuming it produces blue/black without checking opponent lands, or keeping a hand where Fellwar Stone is the only path to colored mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: better in multiplayer with diverse mana bases; unreliable against mono-color/colorless openings that lack your needed color.
  • Low-skill guidance: before counting Fellwar Stone, check what colors opponents' lands can actually make.

Lightning Greaves

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core equipment protection/haste.
  • Role type: protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: gives equipped creature haste and shroud, protecting Alela or a finisher from targeted spells and enabling immediate attacks/activations where relevant.
  • Timing: cast before Alela when possible; equip after commander resolves if legal, but avoid shroud when you still need to target that creature with your own Quickling, equipment movement, or other effects.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2} to cast and equip {0}; outputs haste and shroud on one equipped creature.
  • Partners / packages: protects Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Hullbreaker Horror, Sower of Temptation, and Rankle, Master of Pranks.
  • Role peers: Scion of Oona protects other Faeries with shroud; Greaves protects one equipped creature and grants haste.
  • Failure modes: moving Greaves off Alela without a reason, forgetting shroud stops your own targeting, or expecting it to stop sweepers/sacrifice effects.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against targeted removal; weak against Toxic Deluge-style sweepers and edicts.
  • Low-skill guidance: put Greaves on Alela or the most important creature, and remember shroud blocks your own targeted help too.

Skullclamp

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core token-to-cards artifact.
  • Role type: engine piece; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: equips a creature for +1/-1 and draws two cards when that equipped creature dies, converting 1/1 Faerie tokens into cards.
  • Timing: equip expendable 1/1 tokens when losing the body will not expose you to lethal attacks or remove your only combat-draw attacker; avoid clamping key Faeries needed for Mistbind Clique, Opposition, or blocks.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1} to cast and {1} to equip; outputs two cards when the equipped creature dies.
  • Partners / packages: fuel from Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, and Oona, Queen of the Fae; extra cards find counters and removal.
  • Role peers: The One Ring draws repeatedly without sacrificing creatures; Skullclamp is cheaper but needs bodies to die.
  • Failure modes: killing essential blockers, clamping Alela or valuable non-token creatures by mistake, or equipping when exile/bounce prevents the death trigger.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent after sweepers or with token flow; risky under immediate combat pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: clamp spare 1/1 tokens, not the creature keeping you alive.

The One Ring

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core artifact draw engine and stabilizer.
  • Role type: engine piece; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: if cast, gives you protection from everything until your next turn, then taps to add burden counters and draw cards equal to burden counters while upkeep life loss grows.
  • Timing: cast to buy a protected turn or refill after stabilizing; manage burden counters so the life loss does not become lethal.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {4}; outputs one-turn protection if cast, repeat card draw, burden counters, and upkeep life loss equal to burden counters.
  • Partners / packages: cards drawn fuel Force of Will, Force of Negation, Counterspell, Cyclonic Rift, Alela, Cunning Conqueror, and finishers.
  • Role peers: Rhystic Study and Mystic Remora draw from opponent actions; The One Ring draws on your activation and costs life over time.
  • Failure modes: activating into lethal burden loss, assuming protection persists beyond your next turn, or casting without enough follow-up to use the protected window.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against combat and burn for one turn; dangerous in long red-pressure games if burden grows.
  • Low-skill guidance: use the protection turn to stabilize, and stop tapping The One Ring if burden life loss will kill you.

Command Tower

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for one mana of any color in Alela's color identity, so it reliably produces {U} or {B} for interaction, commander, and engines.
  • Timing: prioritize early when hands need both colors or untapped interaction.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {U} or {B}.
  • Partners / packages: casts Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, Go for the Throat, Mystic Remora, and tutors.
  • Role peers: Underground Sea, Watery Grave, and Morphic Pool also give untapped Dimir access; Command Tower has no life or opponent condition.
  • Failure modes: using other conditional lands first and stranding colored spells.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best early against any deck where holding blue matters.
  • Low-skill guidance: play it early when you need reliable blue or black.

Exotic Orchard

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, conditional mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for one mana of any color an opponent's land could produce, often giving blue or black in multiplayer but requiring visible opponent land support.
  • Timing: sequence after checking opponent lands; do not rely on it for a turn-one/turn-two color unless that color is already visible.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs only colors opponent lands can currently produce.
  • Partners / packages: supports interaction and Alela when opponents provide {U} or {B} access.
  • Role peers: Fellwar Stone has the same opponent-land color dependency on an artifact; Command Tower is reliable.
  • Failure modes: assuming it makes Dimir colors automatically, or keeping a hand where it is the only colored land against unknown openings.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: better in pods with diverse color identities; weaker against colorless or mono-color starts missing your needed color.
  • Low-skill guidance: check opponent lands before counting Exotic Orchard as blue or black.

Path of Ancestry

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, tapped tribal mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: enters tapped, taps for {U} or {B}, and scries 1 when that mana is spent to cast a creature spell sharing a type with Alela, mainly Faerie creatures.
  • Timing: play on a turn where entering tapped does not cost a live one-mana spell or counter window; use for Faeries when the scry matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop entering tapped; outputs Dimir commander-color mana and occasional scry 1.
  • Partners / packages: scry works when casting Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, Vendilion Clique, Brazen Borrower, Quickling, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, Sower of Temptation, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, Oona, Queen of the Fae, and Alela.
  • Role peers: Temple of Deceit also enters tapped and scries immediately; Path fixes both colors and has tribal scry later.
  • Failure modes: playing it turn one over Mystic Remora, Ponder, Preordain, or one-mana interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: fine in slower games; costly against fast combo/aggro.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Path when you can afford a tapped land, then use it for Faeries to get scry.

Secluded Courtyard

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, tribal mana resource/flex colorless land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: chooses a creature type as it enters, taps for {C}, or taps for one mana of any color only to cast a creature spell of the chosen type or activate an ability of a creature source of that type.
  • Timing: usually choose Faerie; do not count colored mana from it for Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, Feed the Swarm, tutors, or enchantments.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop with creature-type choice; outputs {C} broadly or restricted colored mana for chosen-type creature spells/abilities.
  • Partners / packages: with Faerie named, casts Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, Vendilion Clique, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, Sower of Temptation, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, and Oona, Queen of the Fae.
  • Role peers: Cavern of Souls also chooses a type and can make uncounterable creatures; Courtyard can help creature-source abilities.
  • Failure modes: naming the wrong type, treating restricted colored mana as generic Dimir fixing, or keeping it as the only colored land for noncreature interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good for Faerie-heavy hands; poor for counter/removal-heavy hands without other colored sources.
  • Low-skill guidance: name Faerie, and remember colored mana from Courtyard is for Faerie creature spells/abilities only.

Cavern of Souls

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, tribal mana resource/protection land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: chooses a creature type, taps for {C}, or taps for one mana of any color to cast a creature spell of the chosen type, making that spell uncounterable.
  • Timing: usually choose Faerie when Alela or Faerie spells matter; do not count colored mana from it for noncreature counters, removal, tutors, or enchantments.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop with creature-type choice; outputs {C} or restricted creature mana plus uncounterability.
  • Partners / packages: protects casting Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Vendilion Clique, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, Sower of Temptation, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, and Oona, Queen of the Fae if Faerie is chosen.
  • Role peers: Secluded Courtyard also fixes chosen-type creatures but does not make them uncounterable.
  • Failure modes: relying on Cavern for Counterspell, Cyclonic Rift, or Feed the Swarm; naming a type that strands Alela.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against control; less useful against creature-combat decks where unrestricted colored mana matters more.
  • Low-skill guidance: name Faerie unless a specific visible reason says otherwise, and use other lands for noncreature spells.

Morphic Pool

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core multiplayer Dimir land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {U} or {B} and enters untapped if you have two or more opponents, matching Commander multiplayer needs.
  • Timing: early untapped Dimir source in most pods; in one-on-one or reduced-player states, account for entering tapped if the condition is not met.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {U} or {B}.
  • Partners / packages: casts early Mystic Remora, Dauthi Voidwalker, Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, Go for the Throat, and Alela.
  • Role peers: Watery Grave and Underground Sea are Island Swamp duals; Morphic Pool depends on opponent count.
  • Failure modes: assuming it is untapped with fewer than two opponents, or sequencing tapped into a needed counter window.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in full commander pods; less reliable late if player count changes in edge runtime states.
  • Low-skill guidance: in normal multiplayer, treat it as a strong untapped blue/black land.

Watery Grave

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core Island Swamp mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {U} or {B}, has Island and Swamp types for fetches and Snuff Out, and may enter untapped if you pay 2 life.
  • Timing: pay 2 life when immediate interaction or curve matters; let it enter tapped when life or tempo allows.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {U}/{B}, may cost 2 life to enter untapped.
  • Partners / packages: fetchable by Polluted Delta, Flooded Strand, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, and Scalding Tarn where Island/Swamp restrictions match.
  • Role peers: Underground Sea has the same types without shock life; Sunken Hollow is typed but conditional tapped.
  • Failure modes: paying 2 life unnecessarily under burn pressure, or letting it enter tapped when holding Spell Pierce/Swan Song matters.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: prioritize untapped against combo/control; conserve life against red pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: pay 2 life only when you need the mana this turn.

Underground Sea

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, premium Island Swamp mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: untapped land with Island and Swamp types that taps for {U} or {B}, supporting fetches, check lands, and Snuff Out.
  • Timing: fetch or play early when double-blue, black removal, or Swamp typing matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {U} or {B}.
  • Partners / packages: fetchable by Polluted Delta, Flooded Strand, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, and Scalding Tarn when their Island/Swamp text permits.
  • Role peers: Watery Grave is similar but may cost life; Sunken Hollow is typed but may enter tapped.
  • Failure modes: exposing it to nonbasic hate when a basic Island/Swamp would satisfy the hand, or fetching a typed dual when preserving life/basic count matters.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best for early interaction and enabling Drowned Catacomb, Tainted Isle, and Snuff Out.
  • Low-skill guidance: Underground Sea is your cleanest blue/black source; use it when you need reliable colors.

Polluted Delta

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, core fetchland mana fixer and shuffle resource.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for an Island or Swamp card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle.
  • Timing: fetch when you need exact mana now, hold when Brainstorm, Ponder, or tutor top-deck setup makes shuffle valuable.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land, tap, 1 life, and sacrifice; outputs a registered Island/Swamp target onto battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: registered targets include Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Sunken Hollow, Fetid Pools, Island, and Swamp.
  • Role peers: Flooded Strand, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, and Scalding Tarn have narrower off-color target text; Polluted Delta is best for Dimir.
  • Failure modes: fetching a tapped target when untapped interaction is required, spending the last basic too casually, or cracking before Brainstorm when mana is already fine.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: life loss matters against burn; shuffle matters in control/value games.
  • Low-skill guidance: fetch the color you are missing, and save Delta for Brainstorm if you already have enough mana.

Flooded Strand

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, Island-search fetchland.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for a Plains or Island card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle; this deck has no registered Plains targets, so it is an Island fetch here.
  • Timing: use to find blue access or a Dimir Island dual; hold for Brainstorm shuffle when colors are already covered.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes tap, 1 life, sacrifice; outputs a registered Island target.
  • Partners / packages: registered Island targets are Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Sunken Hollow, Fetid Pools, and Island.
  • Role peers: Polluted Delta can find Island or Swamp; Flooded Strand cannot find basic Swamp in this deck.
  • Failure modes: assuming it finds black-only Swamp, fetching tapped Fetid Pools/Sunken Hollow when interaction requires untapped mana, or cracking before a needed shuffle.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good for blue-heavy hands; life cost matters against red pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: in this list, Flooded Strand finds Island-type cards only.

Marsh Flats

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, Swamp-search fetchland.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for a Plains or Swamp card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle; this deck has no registered Plains targets, so it is a Swamp fetch here.
  • Timing: use to secure black for Dauthi Voidwalker, Go for the Throat, Vampiric Tutor, or Alela; hold for Brainstorm when black is already secure.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes tap, 1 life, sacrifice; outputs a registered Swamp target.
  • Partners / packages: registered Swamp targets are Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Sunken Hollow, Fetid Pools, and Swamp.
  • Role peers: Polluted Delta can find Island or Swamp; Marsh Flats cannot find basic Island in this deck.
  • Failure modes: assuming it finds blue-only Island, using it too late to enable Snuff Out, or fetching a tapped land before a black instant is needed.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: important for black removal/tutors; life cost matters under pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: in this list, Marsh Flats finds Swamp-type cards only.

Misty Rainforest

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, Island-search fetchland.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for a Forest or Island card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle; this deck has no registered Forest targets, so it is an Island fetch here.
  • Timing: use for blue access or a Dimir Island dual; preserve for Brainstorm when mana is already functional.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes tap, 1 life, sacrifice; outputs a registered Island target.
  • Partners / packages: registered Island targets are Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Sunken Hollow, Fetid Pools, and Island.
  • Role peers: Flooded Strand and Scalding Tarn also function as Island-only fetches in this deck.
  • Failure modes: claiming green/Forest access, fetching tapped targets into live counter windows, or using it before top-card manipulation.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong for early blue; life loss matters against aggressive red.
  • Low-skill guidance: treat Misty Rainforest as a blue/Dimir Island fetch, not a green source.

Scalding Tarn

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, Island-search fetchland.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for an Island or Mountain card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle; this deck has no registered Mountain targets, so it is an Island fetch here.
  • Timing: fetch blue/Dimir access when needed; hold for Brainstorm shuffle if colors are secure.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes tap, 1 life, sacrifice; outputs a registered Island target.
  • Partners / packages: registered Island targets are Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Sunken Hollow, Fetid Pools, and Island.
  • Role peers: Flooded Strand and Misty Rainforest are also Island-only fetches in this deck; Polluted Delta is more flexible.
  • Failure modes: assuming red/Mountain access, fetching a tapped land when Swan Song or Spell Pierce must stay live, or cracking too early before Brainstorm.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best for blue starts; life cost matters in burn races.
  • Low-skill guidance: Scalding Tarn does not provide red here; it finds Island-type cards.

Prismatic Vista

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, basic-land fetch and shuffle resource.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle.
  • Timing: use when you need untapped basic Island or Swamp, want to play around nonbasic hate, or need a shuffle after Brainstorm.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes tap, 1 life, sacrifice; outputs basic Island or basic Swamp.
  • Partners / packages: only registered basic targets are Island and Swamp, with 3 Island and 1 Swamp in the list.
  • Role peers: typed fetchlands can find dual Island/Swamp lands; Prismatic Vista finds basics only.
  • Failure modes: trying to fetch duals, spending the only Swamp too early, or cracking before knowing whether blue or black is the bottleneck.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: valuable against nonbasic hate and for clean untapped colors; basic count is limited.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose Island for blue interaction unless black is missing or Snuff Out/black removal is urgent.

Drowned Catacomb

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, conditional Dimir mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {U} or {B}, entering tapped unless you control an Island or a Swamp.
  • Timing: sequence after Underground Sea, Watery Grave, Sunken Hollow, Fetid Pools, Island, or Swamp when possible to keep it untapped.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {U} or {B} if usable.
  • Partners / packages: typed lands from fetches improve Drowned Catacomb sequencing and keep Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, or Go for the Throat live.
  • Role peers: Shipwreck Marsh, Choked Estuary, and Darkslick Shores have different untap conditions.
  • Failure modes: playing it first when it enters tapped and strands a one-mana play, or missing that dual lands with Island/Swamp types satisfy it.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong after a typed first land; clunky in one-land hands.
  • Low-skill guidance: play an Island or Swamp-type land before Drowned Catacomb when you can.

Shipwreck Marsh

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, conditional Dimir mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {U} or {B}, entering tapped unless you control two or more other lands.
  • Timing: better from turn three onward; avoid as the only early land if one- or two-mana interaction matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {U} or {B} after its entry condition.
  • Partners / packages: supports midgame Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, and double-spell turns.
  • Role peers: Darkslick Shores is strongest early and weaker later; Shipwreck Marsh is the inverse.
  • Failure modes: keeping slow hands that rely on it untapped early, or sequencing it before two other lands when interaction must be live.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: fine in slower games; risky against fast combo/aggression.
  • Low-skill guidance: expect Shipwreck Marsh to be tapped before your third land.

Clearwater Pathway

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, modal-faced fixed-color mana resource.
  • Role type: modal utility; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters as either Clearwater Pathway for {U} or Murkwater Pathway for {B}, locking the chosen face as your color source.
  • Timing: choose the face that fixes the next several turns, not only the current spell; blue is often higher priority for counters, black for tutors/removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs either {U} or {B} depending on chosen face.
  • Mode map: Clearwater Pathway face taps for {U}; Murkwater Pathway face taps for {B}. Once played, it does not switch.
  • Partners / packages: blue face supports Counterspell, Mystic Remora, Ponder; black face supports Vampiric Tutor, Dauthi Voidwalker, Go for the Throat, Feed the Swarm.
  • Role peers: River of Tears changes color by land-play status; Clearwater Pathway is stable but one-color only.
  • Failure modes: choosing black and stranding double-blue counters, choosing blue and missing black removal, or assuming it produces both colors.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: blue face often better versus combo/control; black face often better against creature pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: pick the color your hand is missing most; it cannot change later.

Sunken Hollow

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, Island Swamp typed Dimir land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {U} or {B} and has Island/Swamp types, entering tapped unless you control two or more basic lands.
  • Timing: fetch or play when typed dual access matters; expect it to enter tapped early because the deck has only 3 Island and 1 Swamp.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {U} or {B} after entry.
  • Partners / packages: fetchable by Island/Swamp fetches and enables Drowned Catacomb, Tainted Isle, and Snuff Out.
  • Role peers: Watery Grave can enter untapped for 2 life; Underground Sea is untapped typed dual.
  • Failure modes: assuming it enters untapped without two basics, or fetching it when immediate interaction is required.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good in slower games and with basic-heavy starts; clunky in fast early turns.
  • Low-skill guidance: treat Sunken Hollow as a tapped dual early unless two basics are already out.

Underground River

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, pain-land Dimir mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {C} safely or {U}/{B} while dealing 1 damage to you, enabling untapped interaction.
  • Timing: use colored mode when the spell matters; use colorless mode for generic costs to preserve life.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {C} or {U}/{B} with 1 self-damage.
  • Partners / packages: casts early Spell Pierce, Mystic Remora, Vampiric Tutor, Go for the Throat, and Drown in the Loch.
  • Role peers: Talisman of Dominance has the same color-for-life tension; Command Tower fixes without damage.
  • Failure modes: taking unnecessary damage, ignoring cumulative life costs from Bitterblossom, Snuff Out, The One Ring, and Toxic Deluge.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against fast stack decks; manage carefully against burn/aggro.
  • Low-skill guidance: tap for colorless when possible and only take damage for needed blue or black.

Sunken Ruins

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, filter-land mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {C} or filters {U/B} plus tap into {U}{U}, {U}{B}, or {B}{B}, enabling double-color spells.
  • Timing: best when you already have a blue or black mana to filter; do not rely on it alone for colored spells.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {C} alone or two colored mana by consuming a blue/black input.
  • Partners / packages: helps cast Counterspell, Dauthi Voidwalker, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Alela, Cunning Conqueror, and black removal plus blue counters in the same turn.
  • Role peers: Darkwater Catacombs filters generic into {U}{B}; Sunken Ruins can make double-blue or double-black with colored input.
  • Failure modes: keeping it as the only land with colored spells, filtering when colorless would suffice, or misunderstanding generic versus colorless.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in midgame double-spell turns; weak as sole early source.
  • Low-skill guidance: Sunken Ruins needs another blue or black mana to make colored mana pairs.

Choked Estuary

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, conditional Dimir mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: may reveal an Island or Swamp card from your hand as it enters; otherwise it enters tapped, then taps for {U} or {B}.
  • Timing: play when you can reveal Island, Swamp, Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Sunken Hollow, or Fetid Pools, or when tapped entry is acceptable.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop plus optional reveal; outputs {U} or {B}.
  • Partners / packages: typed lands in hand make it untapped and support early counters/removal.
  • Role peers: Drowned Catacomb checks battlefield Island/Swamp; Choked Estuary checks hand reveal.
  • Failure modes: hiding information when untapped mana is critical, revealing a card unnecessarily when tapped entry is fine, or keeping a hand where it is slow with no reveal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: untapped mode matters against fast combo; tapped mode acceptable in slow setup turns.
  • Low-skill guidance: reveal an Island or Swamp card if you need Choked Estuary untapped this turn.

Darkslick Shores

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, early Dimir mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {U} or {B}, entering tapped unless you control two or fewer other lands.
  • Timing: play early to keep one- and two-mana interaction live; avoid relying on it as an untapped late land.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {U} or {B}.
  • Partners / packages: excellent for early Mystic Remora, Ponder, Spell Pierce, Dauthi Voidwalker, Go for the Throat, and Arcane Signet.
  • Role peers: Shipwreck Marsh is better later; Darkslick Shores is better early.
  • Failure modes: holding it too long until it enters tapped, or sequencing a tapped land first when Darkslick would enable interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in openers against fast decks; less valuable late.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Darkslick Shores in the first three land drops when possible.

Darkwater Catacombs

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, filter mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: pays {1} and taps to add {U}{B}, converting generic or colorless mana into both Dimir colors.
  • Timing: best alongside Sol Ring, Reliquary Tower, or excess generic mana; not a standalone colored source.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop plus {1}, {T}; outputs {U}{B}.
  • Partners / packages: helps convert Sol Ring mana into Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Drown in the Loch, Talion, the Kindly Lord, and double-spell interaction turns.
  • Role peers: Dimir Signet has similar filtering on an artifact; Sunken Ruins can make different colored pairs with colored input.
  • Failure modes: keeping it as only land, forgetting it cannot tap for mana without paying {1}, or using it when a simple colored land is needed.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: useful in artifact-ramp hands; poor in low-mana openers.
  • Low-skill guidance: Darkwater Catacombs needs another mana to make {U}{B}.

River of Tears

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, timing-sensitive mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {U}, but if you played a land this turn it adds {B} instead.
  • Timing: use before playing a land when you need blue; play land first when black is needed for removal/tutors.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {U} or {B} based on whether you played a land this turn.
  • Partners / packages: blue mode supports Spell Pierce, Counterspell, and cantrips; black mode supports Vampiric Tutor, Go for the Throat, Feed the Swarm, and Dauthi Voidwalker.
  • Role peers: Clearwater Pathway locks one color; River changes by turn sequencing.
  • Failure modes: playing a land and losing blue for a counter, or needing black before land drop and forgetting the sequencing.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong with careful sequencing; punishing under complex priority turns.
  • Low-skill guidance: decide whether you need blue or black before playing your land for turn.

Tainted Isle

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, conditional Dimir mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {C}, or for {U}/{B} only if you control a Swamp.
  • Timing: sequence after Swamp, Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Sunken Hollow, or Fetid Pools when you need colored mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs {C} always or {U}/{B} with Swamp condition.
  • Partners / packages: typed Swamp duals from fetchlands turn on Tainted Isle and support Snuff Out.
  • Role peers: Drowned Catacomb also rewards Island/Swamp presence but can enter tapped; Tainted Isle always enters untapped but may be colorless.
  • Failure modes: keeping it as your only colored source, assuming black-producing non-Swamp lands turn it on, or stranding Counterspell.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: solid when fetches find Swamp duals; risky in one-land openers.
  • Low-skill guidance: make sure you control an actual Swamp-type land before counting Tainted Isle as blue/black.

Temple of Deceit

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, tapped selection mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: enters tapped, scries 1, then taps for {U} or {B}, smoothing draws at the cost of tempo.
  • Timing: play when no one-mana spell or counter must be held; avoid as turn-one land with Mystic Remora, Ponder, Preordain, or Spell Pierce in hand.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop entering tapped; outputs scry 1 and later Dimir mana.
  • Partners / packages: scry can find land drops, Sol Ring, early engines, or interaction.
  • Role peers: Path of Ancestry also enters tapped and can scry later on Faerie casts; Temple scries immediately.
  • Failure modes: costing a live interaction window, keeping a slow hand because scry looks appealing, or bottoming needed color sources.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: acceptable in slow pods; dangerous against fast combo/aggro.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Temple on a quiet turn, and scry toward land or interaction.

Fetid Pools

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, tapped Island Swamp/cycling mana resource.
  • Role type: modal utility; mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: enters tapped as an Island Swamp that taps for {U} or {B}, or cycles for {2} to discard it and draw a card.
  • Timing: play when typed Dimir mana matters and tapped entry is acceptable; cycle late when land drops are covered and a fresh card is worth more.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop entering tapped, or {2} plus discard for one card; outputs typed Dimir mana or a replacement draw.
  • Mode map: land mode provides Island/Swamp types for fetches, Drowned Catacomb, Tainted Isle, and Snuff Out; cycling mode discards Fetid Pools and draws a card, but does not produce mana.
  • Partners / packages: fetchable by Island/Swamp fetchlands; cycling fills graveyard for Dig Through Time.
  • Role peers: Sunken Hollow is typed and sometimes untapped; Fetid Pools is always tapped but has cycling.
  • Failure modes: cycling when you still need land count, playing tapped into a counter window, or counting cycling as mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good in grindy games; slow against fast starts.
  • Low-skill guidance: play it early if you need mana; cycle it late if lands are no longer the issue.

Otawara, Soaring City

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, utility blue land/channel answer.
  • Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {U}, or channels for {3}{U} minus {1} for each legendary creature you control to return target artifact, creature, enchantment, or planeswalker to its owner's hand.
  • Timing: use as land early if blue is needed; save channel when a bounce effect is worth discarding a land and cannot be countered as a spell by normal spell counters.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop for {U}, or discard plus channel cost for bounce; cost is reduced by legendary creatures such as Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Rankle, Master of Pranks, Vendilion Clique, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, Oona, Queen of the Fae.
  • Mode map: land mode produces blue; channel mode discards Otawara to return target artifact, creature, enchantment, or planeswalker to its owner's hand.
  • Partners / packages: complements Cyclonic Rift and Brazen Borrower for tempo; protects against resolved hate or blockers.
  • Role peers: Takenuma, Abandoned Mire is the black channel utility land for recursion, not bounce.
  • Failure modes: discarding needed blue mana, bouncing a low-value permanent, or assuming channel is a spell cast for Alela triggers.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against uncounterable/resolved permanents; keep as land when mana is tight.
  • Low-skill guidance: if you need blue mana, play it; if mana is stable, save it to bounce a major permanent.

Takenuma, Abandoned Mire

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, utility black land/channel recursion.
  • Role type: modal utility; recursion; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {B}, or channels for {3}{B} minus {1} for each legendary creature you control to mill three cards, then return a creature or planeswalker card from your graveyard to your hand.
  • Timing: use as land when black is needed; save channel for returning Alela alternatives or key creatures after removal when the returned card matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop for {B}, or discard plus channel cost; outputs mill three and a creature/planeswalker card from your graveyard to hand.
  • Mode map: land mode produces black; channel mode discards Takenuma, mills three, then returns a creature or planeswalker card from your graveyard to your hand.
  • Partners / packages: returns Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Glen Elendra Archmage, Hullbreaker Horror, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Notion Thief, Opposition Agent, or other important creatures.
  • Role peers: no main-deck creature recursion peer; Dauthi Voidwalker plays opponent exiled cards but does not recur your cards.
  • Failure modes: channeling when graveyard has no meaningful target, milling cards that matter more than the return, or losing a needed black source.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in removal-heavy games; risky against graveyard hate or when mana development is behind.
  • Low-skill guidance: keep it as a black land until a valuable creature is in your graveyard.

Bojuka Bog

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, graveyard-hate land.
  • Role type: hate piece; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters tapped, exiles target player's graveyard on entry, then taps for {B}.
  • Timing: play before an opponent uses graveyard resources, not after flashback/delve/escape costs are paid; delay only if the graveyard target will become much more valuable and tempo allows.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop entering tapped; outputs one target player's graveyard exile and later black mana.
  • Partners / packages: overlaps with Dauthi Voidwalker, Leyline of the Void, and Grafdigger's Cage; can weaken your own Drown in the Loch thresholds against that player.
  • Role peers: Leyline of the Void and Dauthi Voidwalker prevent future opponent graveyards; Bojuka Bog is a one-shot land trigger.
  • Failure modes: playing it with no graveyard target when black mana is not urgent, using it after the graveyard spell is already cast, or treating it as untapped mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against recursion, escape, delve, flashback, and reanimator; slow against non-graveyard aggro.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Bog when an opponent's graveyard has cards they are about to use.

Reliquary Tower

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, utility colorless hand-size land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: removes your maximum hand size and taps for {C}, supporting huge draw turns from The One Ring, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, and combat-draw engines.
  • Timing: play when colored mana is already secure or hand size is about to matter; avoid as an early color source in interaction-heavy hands.
  • Inputs / outputs: land drop; outputs no maximum hand size and {C}.
  • Partners / packages: protects cards drawn by The One Ring, Kindred Discovery, Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Fact or Fiction, and Dig Through Time.
  • Role peers: no direct hand-size peer; Sol Ring and utility lands also provide colorless but not hand-size protection.
  • Failure modes: keeping hands where Reliquary Tower is the only land, playing it over blue/black when counters/removal must be live, or valuing hand size before drawing extra cards.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good in grindy control games; weak in fast games where colored mana matters.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not play Tower early if it stops you casting blue or black spells.

Island

  • Deck role: main deck, 3 copies, strategically important basic mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: provides untapped {U} for one-mana selection, counterspells, flash creatures, and fetchable basic resilience.
  • Timing: fetch or play early when blue interaction matters or when avoiding nonbasic/tapped-land issues; preserve enough black access elsewhere.
  • Inputs / outputs: basic land drop; outputs {U}.
  • Partners / packages: searched by Polluted Delta, Flooded Strand, Misty Rainforest, Scalding Tarn, and Prismatic Vista; casts Mystic Remora, Ponder, Preordain, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, and Counterspell.
  • Role peers: blue duals Underground Sea, Watery Grave, Sunken Hollow, and Fetid Pools add black but are nonbasic or tapped/life-conditioned.
  • Failure modes: fetching too many Islands and missing black, or ignoring that only three registered copies exist.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against nonbasic hate and early stack fights.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose Island when you need blue now and already have a path to black.

Swamp

  • Deck role: main deck, 1 copy, strategically important basic mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: provides untapped {B}, turns on Snuff Out alternate cost as a Swamp, and gives fetchable basic black access.
  • Timing: fetch when black is missing, Snuff Out free mode matters, or nonbasic hate is a concern; remember there is only one registered basic Swamp.
  • Inputs / outputs: basic land drop; outputs {B}.
  • Partners / packages: searched by Polluted Delta, Marsh Flats, and Prismatic Vista; supports Vampiric Tutor, Dauthi Voidwalker, Go for the Throat, Feed the Swarm, and Alela.
  • Role peers: Underground Sea, Watery Grave, Sunken Hollow, and Fetid Pools are Swamp-typed duals; basic Swamp avoids nonbasic issues.
  • Failure modes: spending the only basic Swamp when later Prismatic Vista/fetch decisions need it, or choosing Swamp while blue interaction is stranded.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: valuable against Blood Moon-style nonbasic pressure if present; black access matters against creature decks.
  • Low-skill guidance: fetch Swamp when black removal/tutors are missing, but do not cut yourself off blue.

Leyline of the Void

  • Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, graveyard-hate bullet.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: if in opening hand, may begin on the battlefield; replaces opponents' cards going to graveyard from anywhere by exiling them instead.
  • Timing: bring in against graveyard recursion, escape, flashback, reanimator, and graveyard combo; strongest in opening hand before opponents stock graveyards.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes sideboard slot and {2}{B}{B} if cast normally; outputs continuous opponent graveyard replacement.
  • Partners / packages: overlaps with Dauthi Voidwalker, Bojuka Bog, Grafdigger's Cage, Thoughtseize, Duress, and Negate against graveyard/combo axes.
  • Role peers: Dauthi Voidwalker is main-deck replacement hate with a body and theft activation; Leyline is pregame/static and harder to time wrong.
  • Failure modes: boarding it against decks that do not use graveyards, drawing it late when casting four mana is too slow, or weakening Drown in the Loch thresholds.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: prioritize against graveyard commanders and recursion engines; avoid against fair creature decks without graveyard use.
  • Low-skill guidance: if it is in your opening hand after sideboarding for graveyards, start with it on the battlefield.

Grafdigger's Cage

  • Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, graveyard/library-cast hate bullet.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: stops creature cards in graveyards and libraries from entering the battlefield, and stops players from casting spells from graveyards or libraries.
  • Timing: board in against reanimation, creature-library cheat, flashback-style casting, and library-cast combo; deploy early before the opponent uses those zones.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}; outputs static restrictions on graveyard/library creature entry and graveyard/library spell casting.
  • Partners / packages: pairs with Leyline of the Void, Dauthi Voidwalker, Bojuka Bog, Thoughtseize, Duress, and Negate.
  • Role peers: Leyline of the Void exiles opponent graveyard movement; Cage stops specific graveyard/library access but does not exile cards.
  • Failure modes: boarding it against delve/threshold-only decks where it may not stop costs/counting, or assuming it stops cards cast from hand.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against reanimator and library-to-battlefield commanders; weak against fair graveyard-count decks.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Cage when the opponent casts from graveyard/library or puts creatures from those zones onto the battlefield.

Pithing Needle

  • Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, activated-ability hate bullet.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: as it enters, choose a card name; activated abilities of sources with that name cannot be activated unless they are mana abilities.
  • Timing: board in when a known commander, planeswalker, artifact, land, or creature activated ability drives the matchup; name from visible commander/revealed/public information.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1} and a card-name choice; outputs a static shutoff for non-mana activated abilities of sources with that name.
  • Partners / packages: complements Thoughtseize and Duress for information, Opposition Agent against search abilities, and counters for non-activated threats.
  • Role peers: Sheoldred's Edict can answer planeswalkers or creatures; Pithing Needle leaves the permanent in play but stops activated abilities.
  • Failure modes: guessing hidden cards, naming a card with only triggered/static abilities, or expecting it to stop mana abilities.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against commander ability engines, planeswalkers, equipment, and utility lands with non-mana activations.
  • Low-skill guidance: only bring it in and name a card when you know which activated ability matters.

Toxic Deluge

  • Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, creature-sweeper bullet.
  • Role type: interaction-sweeper; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: as an additional cost, pays X life so all creatures get -X/-X until end of turn, clearing boards through indestructible-style protection that does not stop -X/-X.
  • Timing: board in against go-wide/tall creature pressure; cast when X kills the creatures that matter and the life payment leaves you alive.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{B} plus X life; outputs -X/-X to your creatures and opponents' creatures until end of turn.
  • Partners / packages: after Deluge, rebuild with Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, The One Ring, Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Brazen Borrower, or Vendilion Clique; protect the sweeper on the stack with Counterspell, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Swan Song, Mana Drain, Arcane Denial, or Flusterstorm when opponents can respond.
  • Role peers: Cyclonic Rift resets opponents only but costs seven to overload; Toxic Deluge is cheaper but hits your board and life total.
  • Failure modes: overpaying life, wiping Alela/tokens when not necessary, or casting against decks with few creatures.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against creature swarms and hexproof/indestructible bodies; bad against spell combo/control.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the smallest X that kills the dangerous creatures and keeps you alive.

Thoughtseize

  • Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, proactive discard bullet.
  • Role type: interaction-discard; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: target player reveals their hand, you choose a nonland card from it, that player discards it, and you lose 2 life.
  • Timing: board in against combo/control or protected single-card plans; cast before committing Alela, Opposition, Kindred Discovery, Hullbreaker Horror, or Oona, Queen of the Fae.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {B} and 2 life; outputs hand information and discard of your chosen nonland card.
  • Partners / packages: clears the way for Rhystic Study, The One Ring, Alela, Cunning Conqueror, and finisher turns; pairs with Duress and Negate.
  • Role peers: Duress is painless but cannot take creatures; Thoughtseize can take creature and noncreature nonlands.
  • Failure modes: taking a medium card while a combo piece remains, losing 2 life under burn pressure, or targeting the wrong player in multiplayer.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong before combo turns and counter wars; weaker in topdeck creature swarms.
  • Low-skill guidance: take the card that would beat your next plan or win the game soon.

Duress

  • Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, proactive noncreature discard bullet.
  • Role type: interaction-discard; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: target opponent reveals their hand, you choose a noncreature, nonland card from it, and that player discards it.
  • Timing: board in against spell combo, control, sweepers, prison pieces, and protected noncreature engines; cast before tapping out for engines or finishers.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {B}; outputs information and discard of a noncreature nonland card from target opponent.
  • Partners / packages: supports Negate, Thoughtseize, Counterspell, Fierce Guardianship, and safe deployment of Alela, Cunning Conqueror.
  • Role peers: Thoughtseize can take creatures too but costs 2 life; Duress is narrower and painless.
  • Failure modes: boarding against creature-heavy decks, targeting an opponent whose hand cannot contain the relevant answer, or forgetting it cannot take creatures.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against sweepers, combo spells, planeswalkers, and counterspells; weak against creature combat.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Duress to remove the noncreature card that stops your engine or enables their combo.

Negate

  • Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, extra noncreature stack bullet.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target noncreature spell, increasing density against sweepers, combo, planeswalkers, artifacts, enchantments, and opposing counters.
  • Timing: board in when noncreature spells decide the matchup; hold for decisive stack objects, not routine setup.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U} and a noncreature spell on the stack; outputs a countered spell.
  • Partners / packages: joins Fierce Guardianship, Force of Negation, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, An Offer You Can't Refuse, and Counterspell in control/combo plans.
  • Role peers: Fierce Guardianship can be free with commander; An Offer You Can't Refuse is cheaper but gives Treasures.
  • Failure modes: bringing it against creature-heavy decks, trying to counter creature spells, or spending it before the real payoff.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against control, combo, prison, and sweeper decks; weak against creature swarms.
  • Low-skill guidance: after sideboarding, save Negate for the noncreature spell that matters most.

Blue Elemental Blast

  • Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, red-specific interaction bullet.
  • Role type: modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: chooses one mode to counter target red spell or destroy target red permanent, giving one-mana coverage only when red targets exist.
  • Timing: board in only against red-heavy decks or known red must-answer cards; hold for red sweepers, red commanders, red damage engines, or red removal aimed at Alela/engines.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}; outputs either a countered red spell or destroyed red permanent.
  • Mode map: counter mode targets a red spell on the stack; destroy mode targets a red permanent already on the battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: protects Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, Rhystic Study, and combat-draw engines from red damage/removal.
  • Role peers: Swan Song and Spell Pierce cover some red spells on the stack; Blue Elemental Blast uniquely destroys resolved red permanents.
  • Failure modes: boarding it without red targets, trying to hit nonred cards, or using it on a low-impact red permanent while a red sweeper is likely.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against red commanders, red sweepers, and burn; blank against nonred decks.
  • Low-skill guidance: only bring it in when you have seen red cards or a red commander, and target red spells/permanents only.

Sheoldred's Edict

  • Deck role: sideboard, 1 copy, sacrifice-removal bullet.
  • Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: chooses one instruction causing each opponent to sacrifice a nontoken creature, creature token, or planeswalker of their choice.
  • Timing: board in against single large threats, protected/hexproof-style creatures, planeswalkers, or boards where the chosen class has few expendable options.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{B}; outputs opponent-choice sacrifice across each opponent for the selected class.
  • Mode map: nontoken creature mode pressures commanders and tall threats but opponent chooses; creature token mode clears token reliance; planeswalker mode answers planeswalkers without targeting.
  • Partners / packages: complements targeted removal Go for the Throat, Snuff Out, Deadly Rollick, Reality Shift, and Pongify when targeting is poor.
  • Role peers: Toxic Deluge sweeps creatures broadly; Sheoldred's Edict is instant and can answer protected single threats but gives choice.
  • Failure modes: expecting it to hit a specific creature when expendable choices exist, choosing token mode against nontoken threats, or boarding it into aristocrat decks that want sacrifice.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against voltron, planeswalkers, and single-threat commanders; weak against wide token boards unless token mode is the plan.
  • Low-skill guidance: pick the mode where the opponent has the fewest harmless sacrifices.

Interaction Priorities

  • Priority: stop effects that invalidate draw-go before answering ordinary damage. Counter or remove resolved engines that shut off casting on opponents' turns, prevent attacks, erase Faerie tokens, break graveyards for Drown in the Loch or Dig Through Time, or make Alela too expensive to recast; do not spend Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain, or Counterspell on replaceable setup unless the rules-engine stack shows the setup immediately creates a winning or locking position.

  • Priority: protect Alela, Cunning Conqueror and the first-spell-on-opponent-turn engine over marginal card advantage. Hold Swan Song, An Offer You Can't Refuse, Spell Pierce, Flusterstorm, and Arcane Denial for removal, sweepers, combo pieces, or engine-breaking permanents; accept that Arcane Denial, Swan Song, and An Offer You Can't Refuse give resources when the stopped spell is more dangerous than the resource granted.

  • Priority: remove creatures that stop evasive pressure, threaten lethal commander damage or combo, or punish token swarms. Use Go for the Throat, Snuff Out, Deadly Rollick, Reality Shift, Pongify, and Drown in the Loch on commanders, snowball creatures, and blockers that keep Faeries from connecting; avoid spending premium exile on a creature that can be ignored, goaded, bounced later, or raced through the air.

  • Priority: bounce or reset only when tempo matters. Use Cyclonic Rift as a normal bounce spell to reopen combat, save a key turn, or break a protected permanent long enough to counter it on recast; treat overload as a commitment gate, best saved for a decisive attack turn, a failed opponent combo turn, or a board where your Faerie engines survive and opponents lose shields.

  • Priority: use text-changing interaction at the exact visible window. Dress Down is strongest when the rules-engine stack or combat step shows creature text is currently deciding survival, triggers, or combat math; do not fire it into an empty board or after the relevant triggered ability, static ability, or damage assignment point has passed.

  • Priority: answer enchantments and noncreature permanents deliberately. Feed the Swarm is sorcery-speed and costs life, so cast it in a main phase only when the target is more dangerous than the tempo and life loss; postboard, the second Feed the Swarm, Negate, Duress, Thoughtseize, Pithing Needle, and Toxic Deluge change the axis from pure draw-go to preemptive disruption when the opposing deck presents known hate, combo, activated abilities, or creature swarms.

  • Priority: treat graveyard and library manipulation as matchup-specific interaction. Bojuka Bog and sideboard Leyline of the Void or Grafdigger's Cage matter against graveyard-dependent decks; use Bojuka Bog before an opponent can pay flashback, delve, escape, or recursion costs, because it does not undo an already-cast spell unless the rules-engine action still depends on graveyard contents.

  • Bait rule: let low-impact draw, ramp, and nonlethal combat tricks resolve when holding only one hard answer. This deck wins by making every opponent's turn a decision point, so preserve Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Counterspell, Mana Drain, and Drown in the Loch for spells that break the commander, sweep the board, combo, or remove multiple engines.

  • Ignore rule: do not fight every attacker. Propaganda, goad from Faerie combat damage, disposable tokens, and high life totals let the pilot ignore isolated ground pressure while building card flow with Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Reconnaissance Mission, Kindred Discovery, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Court of Cunning, and The One Ring.

Combat And Trading Rules

  • Attack rule: attack with evasive Faeries when the attack safely enables Alela goad pressure or combat-draw engines. Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Reconnaissance Mission, and Kindred Discovery make small flying attacks high value, but the agent must still keep enough blockers or interaction for visible crackback and must not attack into a known flash blocker or reach effect unless the rules-engine legal blocks and damage math support it.

  • Commander rule: keep Alela, Cunning Conqueror alive unless attacking is clearly safe or lethal. Alela is the engine that turns opponent-turn spells into Faeries, so do not trade her in combat, expose her to obvious blocks, or move Lightning Greaves away from her without a stronger legal reason; if she dies, recast timing should account for commander tax and available protection.

  • Token rule: Faerie tokens are pressure first and expendable only after engine needs are covered. Trade or sacrifice tokens to preserve life, monarch-like status, or key planes of combat, and use Skullclamp on expendable tokens when losing the body does not open a lethal attack or remove the only safe attacker for combat-draw triggers.

  • Block rule: block to prevent lethal, commander-damage snowballs, or loss of critical status; otherwise prefer racing through the air. Do not trade Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Obyra, Dreaming Duelist, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Scion of Oona, Glen Elendra Archmage, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, Notion Thief, Opposition Agent, or Orcish Bowmasters for ordinary damage unless the life-total or board-state threshold makes the trade necessary.

  • Life threshold: above roughly 25 life in multiplayer Commander, preserve cards and mana over small damage; from 15 to 24, start valuing blocks that protect engines and prevent a two-turn lethal clock; below 15, prioritize survival, hold up removal, and stop optional attacks that tap essential blockers unless the attack creates lethal or a decisive goad lock.

  • Trade rule: trade disposable tokens and stolen or temporary-value creatures before trading unique engines. Sower of Temptation should not be risked casually while its control effect is carrying the board; Mistbind Clique, Rankle, Master of Pranks, Vendilion Clique, Brazen Borrower, and Quickling need context from visible legal actions before they become combat material.

  • Protection rule: use Scion of Oona, Glen Elendra Archmage, free counters, and instant-speed interaction to preserve the board when a sweeper or targeted answer would undo multiple turns. Do not spend protection on a single replaceable Faerie if the same card is needed for a combo stop, commander protection, or a larger engine.

  • Archetype shift: against creature swarms, become a defensive flash-control deck and value Propaganda, Opposition, Toxic Deluge, Cyclonic Rift, and token blocks. Against spell-combo, minimize tapped-out attacks and hold stack interaction. Against control, attack steadily with low-commitment flyers, bait counters with nonessential engines, and keep Hullbreaker Horror or Oona, Queen of the Fae for windows where opponents are low on mana or shields.

Selection And Tutor Rules

  • Priority: use cheap selection to make land drops before protecting luxury engines. Ponder and Preordain should find the next untapped blue or black source, early ramp such as Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, or a one-mana answer when the visible table already threatens a fast commander, combo piece, or hate permanent.

  • Brainstorm rule: cast Brainstorm with a shuffle effect available when possible. Polluted Delta, Flooded Strand, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Scalding Tarn, and Prismatic Vista let the pilot put back dead situational cards, excess expensive finishers, or matchup-wrong interaction before shuffling; without a shuffle, Brainstorm is still acceptable to hide key cards from discard, hit an immediate land drop, or set up a known top-card tutor line.

  • Cantrip bottom rule: bottom or shuffle cards that do not match the next two turns. Early hands usually keep untapped mana, Alela, Cunning Conqueror access, cheap flash interaction, and at least one draw engine; bottom extra seven-mana finishers, redundant tapped lands, sorcery-speed cards that cannot be cast soon, and sideboard-style answers with no visible target.

  • Tutor rule: use Demonic Tutor for the card that changes the current axis, not a generic best card. Find Bitterblossom, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, or The One Ring when the table is slow; find Counterspell, Mana Drain, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, or Cyclonic Rift when a protected combo or sweeper window is imminent; find Opposition, Hullbreaker Horror, or Oona, Queen of the Fae only when mana and shields already support a finisher commitment.

  • Instant tutor rule: aim Vampiric Tutor and Mystical Tutor at the end step before your turn unless the stack requires an immediate answer setup. Vampiric Tutor can find any card at the cost of life and a future draw; Mystical Tutor is limited to an instant or sorcery, reveals the card, and is best for Cyclonic Rift, Dig Through Time, Fact or Fiction, a counterspell, Deadly Rollick, Snuff Out, Reality Shift, Pongify, or Feed the Swarm when those legal lines matter.

  • Dig rule: cast Dig Through Time when the graveyard discount is real and the deck needs a specific answer pair. Prefer combinations such as one hard counter plus one draw engine, one removal spell plus one land, or Cyclonic Rift plus protection; do not exile cards needed for Drown in the Loch context or recursion with Takenuma, Abandoned Mire unless the immediate selection is more important.

  • Fact split rule: choose the Fact or Fiction pile that solves the board, not the pile with the most cards. Prioritize live mana plus interaction when behind, interaction plus engine when stable, and finisher plus protection when opponents are low on cards or shields.

Priority And Stack Rules

  • Core priority rule: keep mana open through opponents' turns because the first spell cast on each opponent turn is the commander engine. With Alela, Cunning Conqueror on the battlefield, prefer casting Spellstutter Sprite, Faerie Mastermind, Quickling, Vendilion Clique, Brazen Borrower, Scion of Oona, Notion Thief, Opposition Agent, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, or instant interaction on an opponent turn when the legal action also matters; do not burn a first-spell trigger on a meaningless spell if a real stack point is likely.

  • Let-resolve rule: let low-impact ramp, small creatures, and nonlethal value spells resolve when holding only one hard counter. Spend Swan Song, An Offer You Can't Refuse, Flusterstorm, Spell Pierce, Arcane Denial, Counterspell, Mana Drain, Force of Will, Force of Negation, and Fierce Guardianship on sweepers, combo pieces, commander-breaking removal, extra-turn style threats, and spells that shut off Faerie combat or card flow.

  • Trigger rule: stack and respond to draw-tax engines according to mana and threat. Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Faerie Mastermind, Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Kindred Discovery, and Court of Cunning are value engines, but the pilot should still preserve priority for lethal prevention, stack interaction, and commander protection before maximizing optional draw.

  • Flash creature rule: cast flash creatures for timing value, not just board count. Spellstutter Sprite needs a legal spell and enough Faerie context to matter; Vendilion Clique is best before a draw step or before a player can use a known key card; Quickling should save or reuse a creature only when returning that creature does not collapse blockers or engine pressure.

  • Replacement and protection rule: protect Alela, Cunning Conqueror at the stack point where removal, sweeper text, or combat damage actually threatens her. Use Scion of Oona, Glen Elendra Archmage, free counters, Lightning Greaves timing, or bounce only when the rules-engine action shows a legal protective line; account for commander tax before accepting a death-and-recast plan.

  • Activated ability rule: activate Faerie Mastermind, Skullclamp, The One Ring, Opposition, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Otawara, Soaring City, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire only when the resource exchange is visible and timely. Do not tap Faeries with Opposition if they are needed for lethal blocks or combat-draw attacks; do not channel utility lands if the mana source is required for stack protection.

  • Graveyard timing rule: fire Bojuka Bog before an opponent pays graveyard-based costs or resolves recursion. It is a preemptive graveyard answer, not a way to undo a spell that has already been legally cast unless the engine still exposes a legal dependency on graveyard contents.

  • End-step rule: spend unused mana on the opponent's end step after the last meaningful threat window. This is the preferred window for Fact or Fiction, Dig Through Time, flash threats, and top-card tutors, because it converts unused shields into pressure while preserving responses through the dangerous main phases.

Sideboard Map

  • Graveyard engines: add Leyline of the Void and Grafdigger's Cage when opposing decks depend on graveyard recursion, library-to-battlefield creature lines, flashback-like casting from graveyard, or repeat commander loops from graveyard. Leyline of the Void is strongest in an opener because it can begin on the battlefield and changes every opponent graveyard exchange into exile; it is weaker when drawn late after graveyard resources already became board presence. Grafdigger's Cage is strongest when the opposing plan needs creature cards entering from graveyards or libraries, or spells cast from graveyards or libraries; it is weaker against graveyard decks that only use the graveyard as count, cost fuel, or hand-recursion value. Reduce main-deck emphasis on slower combat engines when the table can win before Faerie attacks matter.

  • Activated-ability and named-card pressure: add Pithing Needle when a visible commander, planeswalker, artifact, land, or repeat activated ability is the table's main engine. Name only a card the game state, known commander, revealed card, or prior game information makes strategically credible; do not guess a hidden hand card just to spend the artifact. Pithing Needle is bad when the opposing threat is static, triggered, combat-only, or spell-stack based. Its role changes from early lock piece to late precision answer once opponents have exposed the permanent or commander ability that matters.

  • Creature-board resets: add Toxic Deluge against creature-heavy pods, go-wide boards that race Faerie tokens, commander damage boards, and tables where Propaganda alone does not stop attackers. Pay the smallest life amount that kills the relevant attackers or combo creatures; do not self-sweep Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom tokens, and flash creatures unless survival or a winning reset is worth the exchange. Toxic Deluge is bad against spell combo, control mirrors, and low-creature pods where the life payment trades down.

  • Hand disruption: add Thoughtseize and Duress when the matchup turns on one protected noncreature spell, sweeper, combo piece, or counter-war card. Thoughtseize can take creature or noncreature threats at the cost of life, so it is preferred when the unknown problem could be a commander-support creature or hate creature. Duress is narrower but painless, so it is better when the target class is known to be noncreature nonland. Both are worse in multiplayer topdeck wars and against redundant creature-board decks; their role changes from proactive setup on turn one to protection check before committing Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Opposition, Kindred Discovery, Hullbreaker Horror, or Oona, Queen of the Fae.

  • Extra stack permission: add Negate when noncreature spells decide the game: sweepers, planeswalkers, combo engines, opposing counterspells, mass removal, and prison pieces. Negate is bad when the opposing deck mainly presents creatures or activated abilities already on board. Its role changes from generic shield in control pods to commitment cover for a tap-low finisher turn.

  • Red-specific stack and permanent pressure: add Blue Elemental Blast only against red-heavy decks where a red spell must be countered or a red permanent must be destroyed. It is excellent against red sweepers, red commanders, and red noncreature engines, but it is a blank against decks without red legal targets. Do not board it as generic removal; require visible commander color identity, repeated red threats, or a known red-heavy list.

  • Extra enchantment or creature answer: add the sideboard Feed the Swarm when resolved enchantments or must-kill creatures are expected and stack permission alone is unreliable. It is a sorcery, so use it in your main phase before combat or before holding up interaction would matter; account for life loss if the permanent's mana value is high. It is bad against instant-speed combo and boards where sorcery-speed removal leaves shields down.

  • Edict pressure: add Sheoldred's Edict against single-large-threat commanders, hexproof-style creature threats, planeswalkers, and boards that do not flood disposable creatures. Preserve that the opponent chooses within the selected instruction's legal class; do not expect it to remove a specific creature if they control expendable material. It is bad against token boards and aristocrat shells where sacrifice is useful to the opponent.

Graveyard Combo / Recursion Plan Side in: Leyline of the Void; Grafdigger's Cage; Thoughtseize; Duress; Negate Cut: Bident of Thassa; Coastal Piracy; Court of Cunning; Oona, Queen of the Fae; Sower of Temptation

  • Plan logic: this configuration lowers slow combat-draw exposure and raises pregame graveyard pressure, early discard, and stack coverage. Keep Dauthi Voidwalker, Bojuka Bog, Drown in the Loch, and Opposition Agent because they attack the same axis from main deck without spending sideboard slots. Leyline of the Void can weaken opposing graveyard plans before priority starts, while Grafdigger's Cage covers creature and spell access patterns that exile-only pressure may not fully answer.

Creature Swarm / Commander Combat Plan Side in: Toxic Deluge; Sheoldred's Edict; Feed the Swarm; Pithing Needle Cut: Mystic Remora; Court of Cunning; Fact or Fiction; Oona, Queen of the Fae

  • Plan logic: this configuration trades slow draw and expensive finishing for life-preserving board control. Toxic Deluge is the reset, Sheoldred's Edict handles tall single-threat positions, Feed the Swarm clears a creature or enchantment at sorcery speed, and Pithing Needle turns off the commander or permanent ability that keeps rebuilding pressure. Keep Propaganda, Opposition, Bitterblossom, Cyclonic Rift, Pongify, Reality Shift, Go for the Throat, Snuff Out, and Deadly Rollick because they are the main-deck defensive core.

Spell Combo / Control Plan Side in: Thoughtseize; Duress; Negate; Pithing Needle Cut: Sower of Temptation; Go for the Throat; Pongify; Bident of Thassa

  • Plan logic: this configuration removes creature-only interaction and a slow combat engine for proactive information and additional stack coverage. Thoughtseize and Duress should clear the way before committing a draw engine or finisher; Negate increases counter density; Pithing Needle covers a known activated commander, planeswalker, artifact, or land engine if one is present. Keep instant-speed card flow and free counters because the draw-go plan wins by passing with mana open.

Red Pressure / Red Spells Plan Side in: Blue Elemental Blast; Toxic Deluge; Sheoldred's Edict Cut: Court of Cunning; Fact or Fiction; Oona, Queen of the Fae

  • Plan logic: this configuration respects red damage pressure by lowering expensive late-game cards and adding one-mana red-specific interaction plus board control. Blue Elemental Blast should be held for a red spell or red permanent that changes the race, not spent on the first legal target if Alela, Cunning Conqueror or a draw engine is about to be exposed. Toxic Deluge and Sheoldred's Edict cover creature-heavy red starts when counters are insufficient.

Enchantments / Prison Permanents Plan Side in: Feed the Swarm; Thoughtseize; Duress; Negate Cut: Go for the Throat; Pongify; Snuff Out; Sower of Temptation

  • Plan logic: this configuration removes creature-only answers when the opposing axis is noncreature permanents and protective spells. Feed the Swarm is the clean sideboard answer to resolved enchantments but costs a main-phase window and life, so lead with Thoughtseize, Duress, or Negate when preventing the permanent is safer than removing it later. Keep Cyclonic Rift as a reset and Counterspell, Mana Drain, Force of Will, Force of Negation, and Fierce Guardianship as primary prevention.

Matchup Guidance

  • Aggro: preserve life first and convert the table into a stalled air race. Keep hands with two or more early mana sources, at least one cheap interaction piece, and a realistic path to Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, Propaganda, Pongify, Reality Shift, Go for the Throat, Snuff Out, or Deadly Rollick. Use Alela, Cunning Conqueror at the last safe end step so the first spell on each opponent's turn begins producing Faerie blockers and future goad triggers. Add role cards: Toxic Deluge, Sheoldred's Edict, Pithing Needle, sideboard Feed the Swarm. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow tap-out engines such as Court of Cunning, Fact or Fiction, and Oona, Queen of the Fae when life total is the bottleneck.

  • Go-wide creature decks: treat the first mass reset as a survival resource, not a value play. Toxic Deluge should be sized to clear the creatures that actually threaten lethal or break through flying blockers; do not overpay life merely to remove low-impact bodies. Propaganda taxes attacks, Opposition can tap key attackers before combat, Cyclonic Rift buys a full tempo reset, and Bitterblossom or Alela-generated Faeries can block flyers while goading damaged players' creatures away from you. Sheoldred's Edict is weaker when opponents control expendable creatures, so prefer it only after the board is narrowed or when the legal instruction attacks a planeswalker or single tall threat.

  • Single-threat decks: answer the threat at the cheapest legal point and avoid spending counters on support spells that do not change the clock. Pongify, Reality Shift, Go for the Throat, Deadly Rollick, Snuff Out, Drown in the Loch, Sower of Temptation, and Sheoldred's Edict are the main tactical tools. Pithing Needle is strong when the threat is a commander, planeswalker, land, artifact, or other permanent whose activated ability is the real engine. Hold Cyclonic Rift for protected or repeated threats when one-for-one removal is unlikely to stick.

  • Burn and red pressure: keep mana efficient and do not voluntarily spend life unless the exchange prevents more damage than it costs. Blue Elemental Blast should be reserved for a red spell or red permanent that threatens the commander, a draw engine, a lethal race swing, or a sweeper window. Snuff Out, Toxic Deluge, Thoughtseize, Feed the Swarm, Watery Grave, and Underground River all carry life-cost pressure, so use them only when the board or stack justifies it. The One Ring can buy protection and cards, but monitor burden counters and avoid turning a stable race into self-inflicted lethal.

  • Tempo decks: protect mana efficiency and win counter exchanges by forcing them to act into your open turns. Do not tap out for Kindred Discovery, The One Ring, Bident of Thassa, or Coastal Piracy into open mana unless the tempo opponent is already low on cards or shields are available. Spell Pierce, Flusterstorm, Swan Song, An Offer You Can't Refuse, Counterspell, Mana Drain, and Arcane Denial should fight the spell that creates the tempo snowball, not every cantrip. Quickling, Brazen Borrower, Vendilion Clique, Spellstutter Sprite, and Faerie Mastermind are especially important because they let you affect the game while preserving draw-go posture.

  • Control decks: win by making end-step threats and forcing them to answer on the wrong turn. Prioritize Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Faerie Mastermind, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, The One Ring, and protected Alela, Cunning Conqueror over early combat-only engines. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Duress, Negate, Pithing Needle when a known activated permanent matters. Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature-only removal such as Go for the Throat, Pongify, or Sower of Temptation when targets are scarce. Save free counters for sweepers, hard draw engines, and game-ending noncreature spells.

  • Combo decks: identify whether the combo uses the stack, graveyard, activated abilities, combat, or a resolved permanent, then assign the narrow answer before spending flexible counters. Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain, Counterspell, Flusterstorm, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, An Offer You Can't Refuse, Arcane Denial, Drown in the Loch, Opposition Agent, Notion Thief, and Orcish Bowmasters are the primary interactive cards. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Duress, Negate, Pithing Needle, Leyline of the Void, Grafdigger's Cage according to the combo axis. Do not spend Mystical Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, or Demonic Tutor on value when a specific answer is needed before the next priority cycle.

  • Graveyard decks: attack the graveyard before costs are paid or recursion windows open. Dauthi Voidwalker, Bojuka Bog, Drown in the Loch, Opposition Agent, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire shape the main-deck plan, while Leyline of the Void and Grafdigger's Cage add pregame or static pressure. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Duress, and Negate when the graveyard deck depends on a noncreature payoff spell. Do not describe graveyard hate as responding to an already-cast spell unless the legal action actually affects that spell on the stack; most graveyard denial must happen before the opponent uses the graveyard as a resource.

  • Artifact and enchantment decks: prevent the permanent when possible and remove only the piece that changes the game if prevention fails. Counterspell, Mana Drain, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Negate, Spell Pierce, and Swan Song are preferred before the problem resolves. Feed the Swarm is the sorcery-speed answer to creatures or enchantments, including the sideboard copy when more coverage is needed; account for its life loss and main-phase timing. Cyclonic Rift resets artifacts and enchantments temporarily, while Pithing Needle covers activated abilities from relevant nonland or land permanents but does not answer static abilities.

  • Midrange decks: trade one-for-one early, then land a draw engine after they spend removal. Bitterblossom, Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, Kindred Discovery, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Talion, the Kindly Lord, and The One Ring outscale fair exchanges if protected. Rankle, Master of Pranks, Mistbind Clique, Scion of Oona, Glen Elendra Archmage, and Hullbreaker Horror are pressure-plus-disruption cards, not just bodies. Avoid overcommitting Faeries into a visible sweeper if Alela, Cunning Conqueror can rebuild by casting one spell on each opponent's turn.

  • Big mana decks: counter the payoff, not every ramp-like setup spell, unless the setup spell is the only observable bridge to a near-term game-ending turn. Mana Drain is highest leverage on expensive threats, while Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Counterspell, and Arcane Denial protect the critical window. Opposition Agent punishes search effects when legally flashable, and Vendilion Clique can disrupt a known payoff before the big turn. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Duress, Negate, Pithing Needle for activated mana engines or commander abilities.

  • Removal-heavy decks: make them answer flash threats one at a time and keep commander recast timing disciplined. Lightning Greaves protects haste/equip lines only when legal and equipped; it does not protect through sweepers or sacrifice effects. Scion of Oona, Glen Elendra Archmage, Fierce Guardianship, Force of Will, Force of Negation, and Deadly Rollick help protect or punish removal windows while Skullclamp converts dying Faeries into cards. Recast Alela, Cunning Conqueror when you can still cast a first spell on an opponent's turn soon after, because commander tax without immediate token production can strand the deck in a low-pressure posture.

Specific Matchup Notes

  • General/archetype-only note: no exact opponent list is supplied, so revealed cards, commanders, companions, public zones, and rules-engine legal actions override these assumptions. Treat the first visible payoff, search effect, graveyard enabler, or sweeper as stronger evidence than archetype labels inferred from colors.

  • Fast creature pressure: preserve life total and prevent snowball attacks before building slow draw engines. Priority targets are evasive attackers, anthem effects, combat-damage draw engines, and commanders that scale combat. Add role cards: Toxic Deluge, Sheoldred's Edict, Feed the Swarm, and Blue Elemental Blast only when red threats or red removal are visible. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow tap-out engines such as Kindred Discovery, Bident of Thassa, and Coastal Piracy when you cannot safely attack.

  • Graveyard combo or recursion: use Dauthi Voidwalker, Bojuka Bog, Leyline of the Void, and Grafdigger's Cage before the opponent pays graveyard-dependent costs or reaches the recursion priority window. Priority targets are discard outlets, graveyard tutors, recursion engines, and payoff spells that convert the graveyard into a win. Add role cards: Leyline of the Void, Grafdigger's Cage, Thoughtseize, Duress, and Negate. Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature theft or creature-only removal when the opponent wins from the graveyard rather than the battlefield.

  • Stack-based combo and storm-like turns: keep open mana and assign narrow counters before spending flexible free interaction. Priority targets are the spell that generates the decisive resource jump, the tutor that finds the kill, or the payoff that ends the game. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Duress, and Negate; add Pithing Needle only when a revealed activated ability is part of the combo. Reduce main-deck emphasis: combat-only draw engines when the game is unlikely to hinge on repeated attacks.

  • Control mirrors: win by forcing action at end step and making the opponent answer flash threats on their own turn. Priority targets are sweepers, protected draw engines, and haymakers that beat Alela, Cunning Conqueror plus token pressure. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Duress, Negate, and Pithing Needle for a known activated permanent. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Pongify, Go for the Throat, Sower of Temptation, and Snuff Out when there are few creature targets.

  • Artifact/enchantment engines: counter the permanent when possible, then use sorcery-speed or temporary answers with a clear follow-up. Priority targets are the permanent that creates mana, cards, a lock, or a lethal clock. Add role cards: Feed the Swarm, Negate, Thoughtseize, Duress, and Pithing Needle for activated abilities. Reduce main-deck emphasis: narrow creature interaction if the opponent's board is mostly noncreature permanents.

  • Big mana and commander-centric decks: let low-impact setup resolve unless it directly enables a near-term payoff. Priority targets are the commander, expensive payoff, extra-turn effect, or activated engine that converts mana into inevitability. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Duress, Negate, and Pithing Needle. Keep Mana Drain, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, and Counterspell for the payoff window rather than the first acceleration spell.

Risk Summary

  • Mana risk: the deck needs early blue and black while also supporting colorless utility lands. Cavern of Souls, Secluded Courtyard, Path of Ancestry, Reliquary Tower, and Bojuka Bog can constrain noncreature interaction, so do not keep hands that cast Faeries but cannot represent Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, Go for the Throat, or Feed the Swarm on time.

  • Matchup risk: creature-light combo and control can ignore combat-damage draw engines. In those games, Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, and Kindred Discovery are weaker unless Alela, Cunning Conqueror, Bitterblossom, or multiple flash creatures already provide reliable attackers.

  • Draw risk: Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, The One Ring, Talion, the Kindly Lord, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, and attack-trigger engines can overload the hand, but they do not replace survival. Do not tap out for cards when a revealed lethal line or commander snowball requires interaction now.

  • Over-sideboarding risk: adding too many narrow sideboard cards can dilute flash density, token production, and threat count. Keep the draw-go shell intact unless the opponent's revealed plan demands Leyline of the Void, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, discard, or extra removal.

  • Graveyard risk: Bojuka Bog is timing-sensitive and Dauthi Voidwalker can be removed before it matters. Graveyard hate should be deployed or held according to visible recursion windows, not after the opponent has already legally cast the graveyard spell.

  • Sweeper/removal risk: Faerie tokens and small flash creatures are vulnerable to mass removal. Avoid committing extra creatures when Alela, Cunning Conqueror can rebuild from first spells on opponents' turns, and value Skullclamp, Glen Elendra Archmage, Scion of Oona, and free counters around sweeper windows.

  • Closer risk: the deck can draw cards without ending the game quickly. Use Oona, Queen of the Fae, Hullbreaker Horror, Rankle, Master of Pranks, Opposition, and sustained Faerie attacks as closing plans once shields are available.

  • Interaction risk: free counters and cheap counters are powerful but easy to spend on the wrong object. Preserve Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain, and Counterspell for spells that change the game, not routine setup.

  • Sequencing risk: casting on your own turn can miss Alela, Cunning Conqueror triggers and weaken draw-go posture. Prefer flash threats, end-step tutors, and opponent-turn interaction unless main-phase action is required by sorcery speed, mana development, or immediate survival.

Test Feedback Checklist

  • Deciding factor: Which resource actually decided the game: early Alela, Cunning Conqueror, protected draw from Rhystic Study or The One Ring, attack-trigger cards from Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, or Kindred Discovery, a lock from Opposition, or a single protected finisher such as Hullbreaker Horror or Oona, Queen of the Fae?

  • Mulligans: Did the opener produce both blue and black access, early interaction, and a credible turn sequence, or did hands with Cavern of Souls, Secluded Courtyard, Reliquary Tower, Bojuka Bog, or taplands strand Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, Go for the Throat, or Feed the Swarm?

  • Mana: Did Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, or Fellwar Stone accelerate into a protected commander or engine, or did early rocks expose the deck by tapping out before a relevant stack window?

  • Velocity: Did Brainstorm, Ponder, Preordain, Fact or Fiction, Dig Through Time, Mystical Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, or Demonic Tutor find the needed class of card, or did selection spend mana without fixing the actual pressure point?

  • Engine quality: Did Alela, Cunning Conqueror reliably create Faerie tokens from first spells on opponents' turns, and were token/goad triggers visible and correctly sequenced in replay?

  • Removal discipline: Were Go for the Throat, Snuff Out, Deadly Rollick, Reality Shift, Pongify, Drown in the Loch, Cyclonic Rift, and Feed the Swarm held for board states that mattered, or spent on threats that Faerie tokens, goad, Propaganda, or life total could absorb?

  • Counterspell discipline: Did An Offer You Can't Refuse, Swan Song, Flusterstorm, Fierce Guardianship, Arcane Denial, Mana Drain, Force of Will, Force of Negation, Spell Pierce, and Counterspell answer decisive spells, or did the pilot counter setup while losing to the payoff?

  • Sideboard impact: After boarding, did Leyline of the Void, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, Toxic Deluge, Thoughtseize, Duress, Negate, Blue Elemental Blast, sideboard Feed the Swarm, or Sheoldred's Edict line up with visible opposing cards, or dilute flash density and threat count?

  • Closing: Did the deck convert card advantage into lethal pressure through Faerie attacks, Rankle, Master of Pranks, Opposition, Hullbreaker Horror, or Oona, Queen of the Fae, or did it draw cards while allowing the opponent to reset?

  • Role: Did the pilot correctly play draw-go control when ahead on interaction, tempo when Alela, Cunning Conqueror plus tokens pressured life totals, and survival when fast combat or graveyard engines required immediate answers?

  • Mistakes: Did the pilot cast avoidable main-phase spells that missed Alela, Cunning Conqueror trigger windows, overcommit into sweepers, fail to use end-step priority, or expose Alela, Cunning Conqueror to commander tax without a recast plan?

  • Stranded and standout cards: Which cards were repeatedly uncastable, too slow, or low impact, and which overperformed beyond expectation: Bitterblossom, Mystic Remora, Court of Cunning, Propaganda, Scion of Oona, Glen Elendra Archmage, Notion Thief, Orcish Bowmasters, Dauthi Voidwalker, Opposition Agent, Sower of Temptation, Nymris, Oona's Trickster, or Talion, the Kindly Lord?

First Tuning Questions

  • Card quantities: Does the singleton shell need more cheap flash bodies or token support if Alela, Cunning Conqueror is answered repeatedly, or are Bitterblossom, Faerie Mastermind, Spellstutter Sprite, Quickling, Vendilion Clique, Scion of Oona, and Mistbind Clique enough pressure?

  • Mana base: Are colorless or conditional lands causing too many noncreature-spell failures, especially Cavern of Souls, Secluded Courtyard, Reliquary Tower, Bojuka Bog, River of Tears, Tainted Isle, Temple of Deceit, and Fetid Pools, or does their utility justify the speed loss?

  • Aggro plan: Is Propaganda plus spot removal enough against fast creature decks, or does the sideboard need a different mix around Toxic Deluge, Sheoldred's Edict, sideboard Feed the Swarm, and Blue Elemental Blast?

  • Control plan: Are Thoughtseize, Duress, and Negate enough after sideboarding for control and combo mirrors, or do slow combat engines such as Coastal Piracy, Bident of Thassa, and Kindred Discovery underperform too often when opponents avoid combat?

  • Graveyard plan: Do Dauthi Voidwalker, Bojuka Bog, Leyline of the Void, and Grafdigger's Cage cover graveyard decks without weakening proactive pressure, or does the deck need a clearer pregame commitment to hate pieces?

  • Closer density: Does the deck end games promptly with Oona, Queen of the Fae, Hullbreaker Horror, Rankle, Master of Pranks, Opposition, and token attacks, or should slow card engines be reduced for more decisive finishers?

  • Role conflicts: Are Lightning Greaves, Skullclamp, The One Ring, attack-draw enchantments, and tutors pulling the deck toward tap-out value instead of opponent-turn casting, or are they necessary to recover from removal-heavy games?

  • Sideboard slots: Which sideboard card most often had no target: Pithing Needle, Blue Elemental Blast, Grafdigger's Cage, Leyline of the Void, Toxic Deluge, or Sheoldred's Edict, and which matchup demanded an answer the current 10-card policy sideboard could not provide?

Veles Tactical Policy

Policy: Opening Hand Gate

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: mulligan
  • Cards: Alela, Cunning Conqueror; Sol Ring; Arcane Signet; Dimir Signet; Talisman of Dominance; Fellwar Stone; Counterspell; Spell Pierce; Brainstorm; Ponder; Preordain
  • Phase windows: pregame, opening hand, mulligan decisions
  • Runtime cues: opening_hand; commander:Alela, Cunning Conqueror; visible lands and mana rocks
  • Use when: choosing keep or mulligan before the first turn.
  • Avoid when: the engine provides a forced keep or no mulligan action.
  • Instructions: Keep hands with blue access, black access or a clear route to it, at least two mana sources, and either early interaction, selection, or acceleration into protected Alela, Cunning Conqueror. Ship hands that rely on only colorless or tribal-only mana for noncreature spells, lack early blue interaction, or cannot cast spells on opponents' turns.

Policy: Early Mana Development

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: mana
  • Cards: Command Tower; Underground Sea; Watery Grave; Morphic Pool; Polluted Delta; Sol Ring; Arcane Signet; Dimir Signet; Talisman of Dominance; Fellwar Stone; Cavern of Souls; Secluded Courtyard
  • Phase windows: turns 1-3 main phases, fetch decisions, rock-cast decisions
  • Runtime cues: land_play_available; action:cast Sol Ring; action:cast Arcane Signet; action:play Cavern of Souls
  • Use when: sequencing lands and mana artifacts before the commander is online.
  • Avoid when: holding mana is required to answer an immediately lethal or game-winning visible spell.
  • Instructions: Prioritize untapped blue mana, then black mana, then acceleration. Use Cavern of Souls and Secluded Courtyard to support Faerie creatures, but do not count them as fixing Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, Feed the Swarm, or tutors unless the legal action text proves the payment works.

Policy: First Engine Commitment

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: priority
  • Cards: Alela, Cunning Conqueror; Bitterblossom; Mystic Remora; Rhystic Study; The One Ring; Reconnaissance Mission; Bident of Thassa; Coastal Piracy; Kindred Discovery
  • Phase windows: main phase before shields down, opponent end step, post-interaction windows
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Alela, Cunning Conqueror; action:cast Rhystic Study; action:cast The One Ring
  • Use when: deciding whether to tap out for the commander or a card-advantage engine.
  • Avoid when: an opponent has a visible stack spell or combat line that must be answered this turn.
  • Instructions: Commit Alela, Cunning Conqueror or an engine when the mana left after casting still covers relevant interaction, when opponents are unlikely to punish a tap-out, or when falling behind by waiting is worse. Prefer engines that generate value before combat-dependent cards when the board is empty.

Policy: Opponent-Turn First Spell Discipline

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: priority
  • Cards: Alela, Cunning Conqueror; Faerie Mastermind; Spellstutter Sprite; Vendilion Clique; Quickling; Brazen Borrower; Notion Thief; Opposition Agent; Nymris, Oona's Trickster
  • Phase windows: each opponent turn, upkeep through end step, stack windows
  • Runtime cues: commander_on_battlefield:Alela, Cunning Conqueror; first_spell_this_opponent_turn:false; action:cast
  • Use when: selecting the first spell to cast during an opponent's turn while Alela, Cunning Conqueror is on the battlefield.
  • Avoid when: no legal opponent-turn spell exists or immediate survival requires a different legal action.
  • Instructions: Treat the first opponent-turn spell as a token and goad trigger resource. Prefer flash threats, stack interaction, or end-step selection that advances the board while preserving mana; avoid spending the first-spell trigger on low-impact actions before seeing the opponent's relevant play.

Policy: End-Step Tutor And Selection Window

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: selection; priority
  • Cards: Mystical Tutor; Vampiric Tutor; Demonic Tutor; Brainstorm; Ponder; Preordain; Fact or Fiction; Dig Through Time
  • Phase windows: opponent end step, own main phase when sorcery speed is required
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Mystical Tutor; action:cast Vampiric Tutor; action:cast Demonic Tutor; action:cast Dig Through Time
  • Use when: choosing whether selection should happen now or wait.
  • Avoid when: the selected card is needed before the next priority pass or the tutor is sorcery-speed.
  • Instructions: Prefer instant-speed tutors and deep selection at the last safe opponent end step. Use Demonic Tutor on your main phase only when mana remains for protection or the target class immediately fixes survival, mana, or a win attempt.

Policy: Counterspell Commitment Gate

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: interaction
  • Cards: An Offer You Can't Refuse; Swan Song; Flusterstorm; Fierce Guardianship; Counterspell; Arcane Denial; Mana Drain; Force of Will; Force of Negation; Spell Pierce; Drown in the Loch; Glen Elendra Archmage
  • Phase windows: stack only
  • Runtime cues: stack_spell_present; action:counter; action:cast Counterspell
  • Use when: a legal counterspell can answer a spell on the stack.
  • Avoid when: the opposing spell is low impact and using permission exposes the deck to a known higher-impact threat.
  • Instructions: Spend permission on sweepers, commanders, combo pieces, engines that outdraw this deck, removal that breaks the protected commander plan, and spells that immediately beat Propaganda or token pressure. Do not counter routine setup merely because mana is open.

Policy: Free Permission Pitch Discipline

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: interaction
  • Cards: Force of Will; Force of Negation; Fierce Guardianship
  • Phase windows: stack only, tapped-out shields
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Force of Will; action:cast Force of Negation; action:cast Fierce Guardianship; alternate_cost_available
  • Use when: a free counterspell is legal while mana is insufficient or should remain available.
  • Avoid when: the pitch card is the only route to pressure, commander protection, or rebuilding after a wipe.
  • Instructions: Use free permission to stop decisive spells, not to trade down on mana-neutral plays. If Alela, Cunning Conqueror is present, value Fierce Guardianship as the cleanest shield and preserve it for stack actions that would undo the engine.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3
  • No-API allowed: no

Policy: Removal Target Gate

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: interaction
  • Cards: Go for the Throat; Snuff Out; Deadly Rollick; Reality Shift; Pongify; Feed the Swarm; Cyclonic Rift; Drown in the Loch
  • Phase windows: combat, end step, stack-adjacent priority after permanents resolve, own main phase for sorcery-speed actions
  • Runtime cues: action:target; action:cast Go for the Throat; action:cast Feed the Swarm; action:cast Cyclonic Rift
  • Use when: choosing whether to remove a visible permanent.
  • Avoid when: tokens, goad, Propaganda, or life total absorb the threat and a more dangerous permanent or spell is expected.
  • Instructions: Remove permanents that stop token attacks, threaten lethal, shut off card engines, or invalidate permission. Respect card-type restrictions from legal action text; Feed the Swarm is sorcery-speed, so account for precombat exposure and life loss.

Policy: Deterministic Commander Tax Return

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: priority
  • Cards: Alela, Cunning Conqueror
  • Phase windows: commander zone replacement or state-based commander-zone prompt
  • Runtime cues: action:commander_zone:yes Alela, Cunning Conqueror
  • Use when: Alela, Cunning Conqueror would move from battlefield to graveyard or exile and the legal action text offers returning it to the command zone.
  • Avoid when: the strategy has a visible legal graveyard-recursion line for Alela, Cunning Conqueror this turn.
  • Instructions: Choose the command-zone return and accept future commander tax unless a visible, legal, immediate recursion line is already selected. Record that recast cost rises by commander tax.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 1
  • No-API allowed: yes

Policy: Commander Recast Timing

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: mana; priority
  • Cards: Alela, Cunning Conqueror; Lightning Greaves; Cavern of Souls; Sol Ring; Arcane Signet; Dimir Signet; Talisman of Dominance
  • Phase windows: own main phase after removal, post-wipe rebuild, protected tap-out windows
  • Runtime cues: commander_in_command_zone:Alela, Cunning Conqueror; commander_tax_visible; action:cast Alela, Cunning Conqueror
  • Use when: the commander is available with tax and mana can pay the legal cost.
  • Avoid when: recasting walks into known removal without protection or consumes mana needed for survival.
  • Instructions: Recast when the next opponent-turn spell trigger matters and at least one shield, haste/equip line, or interaction window remains. Delay when tax would consume the entire turn and a draw engine or removal line stabilizes better.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2
  • No-API allowed: no

Policy: Faerie Combat Pressure

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: combat
  • Cards: Alela, Cunning Conqueror; Reconnaissance Mission; Bident of Thassa; Coastal Piracy; Kindred Discovery; Scion of Oona; Obyra, Dreaming Duelist; Rankle, Master of Pranks
  • Phase windows: beginning of combat, declare attackers, combat damage
  • Runtime cues: action:attack; faerie_tokens_present; attack_trigger_present
  • Use when: deciding attacks with Faeries or evasive creatures.
  • Avoid when: attacking taps blockers needed to survive a visible crackback or trades away the only engine protection.
  • Instructions: Attack opponents who cannot profitably block flyers and who are pressured by goad or card-draw triggers. Prioritize connecting with multiple small attackers when attack-draw engines are active; keep back blockers only when visible combat math demands it.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2

Policy: Mistbind Clique Champion Choice

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: priority; interaction
  • Cards: Mistbind Clique; Alela, Cunning Conqueror; Bitterblossom; Spellstutter Sprite; Faerie Mastermind; Quickling; Vendilion Clique; Scion of Oona
  • Phase windows: flash windows, champion trigger resolution, opponent upkeep if legal
  • Runtime cues: action:target Mistbind Clique; trigger:champion; faerie_permanent_present
  • Use when: Mistbind Clique requires a champion choice.
  • Avoid when: championing the only commander or engine body exposes a higher-value permanent without a clear payoff.
  • Instructions: Prefer expendable Faerie tokens or low-impact Faeries as champion material. Use upkeep timing to constrain an opponent only when the legal flash window and visible mana make the tap effect relevant.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Board Theft And Bounce Commitment

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: interaction; priority
  • Cards: Sower of Temptation; Hullbreaker Horror; Brazen Borrower; Cyclonic Rift; Quickling
  • Phase windows: opponent end step, combat disruption, own main phase after shields
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Sower of Temptation; action:cast Cyclonic Rift; action:cast Brazen Borrower; action:target
  • Use when: selecting bounce, theft, or tempo interaction.
  • Avoid when: the line returns or steals a low-impact object while a decisive stack or combat threat remains unresolved.
  • Instructions: Use bounce and theft to clear blockers, break combo permanents, reset commanders, or protect your own engines. Route Hullbreaker Horror trigger sequencing through model reasoning because spell order and target choice depend on visible stack and permanents.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3

Policy: Graveyard And Replacement Hate

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: interaction; pregame
  • Cards: Dauthi Voidwalker; Bojuka Bog; Leyline of the Void; Grafdigger's Cage
  • Phase windows: pregame, land play, priority before graveyard costs, sideboard games
  • Runtime cues: opponent_graveyard_nonempty; action:play Bojuka Bog; opening_hand:Leyline of the Void
  • Use when: opposing graveyard cards, cast-from-graveyard lines, or library-to-battlefield lines are visible.
  • Avoid when: hate deployment costs the only colored source or delays a stronger survival answer.
  • Instructions: Deploy preemptive hate before opponents pay flashback, delve, escape, or reanimation costs; do not treat hate as a response to a spell already cast unless the legal action text allows it. Bojuka Bog timing must account for entering tapped.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Wheel And Draw Punish Timing

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: interaction; priority
  • Cards: Notion Thief; Orcish Bowmasters; Faerie Mastermind; Talion, the Kindly Lord
  • Phase windows: opponent draw steps, stack windows around draw spells, end step flash windows
  • Runtime cues: opponent_draw_spell_on_stack; action:cast Notion Thief; action:cast Orcish Bowmasters; action:activate Faerie Mastermind
  • Use when: an opponent is about to draw extra cards or cast a spell matching a visible chosen number for Talion, the Kindly Lord.
  • Avoid when: flashing the card exposes it before the draw event or uses mana needed for a decisive counterspell.
  • Instructions: Time punish cards so the replacement, trigger, or activation actually sees the draw event under rules-engine output. Do not assume hidden hand contents or future spells; act from stack text and public triggers.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Opposition Lock Commitment

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: priority; combat
  • Cards: Opposition; Bitterblossom; Alela, Cunning Conqueror; Oona, Queen of the Fae
  • Phase windows: own main phase to cast, opponent upkeep and combat priority to tap
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Opposition; action:activate Opposition; token_count_visible
  • Use when: deciding whether to commit or activate Opposition with token resources.
  • Avoid when: tapping creatures prevents lethal pressure or leaves the deck dead to visible attackers.
  • Instructions: Commit Opposition when the board has repeatable tokens or enough creatures to deny key mana, attackers, or blockers. Activation targets require light-model reasoning because the best permanent depends on opponent mana, combat, and stack threats.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3
  • No-API allowed: no

Policy: Finisher Tap-Out Gate

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: mana; priority
  • Cards: Hullbreaker Horror; Oona, Queen of the Fae; Rankle, Master of Pranks; The One Ring
  • Phase windows: opponent end step for flash, own main phase when mana remains, late-game shields
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Hullbreaker Horror; action:cast Oona, Queen of the Fae; action:activate Oona, Queen of the Fae
  • Use when: moving from control posture to a closing line.
  • Avoid when: tapping out lets a visible opponent win before the finisher generates value.
  • Instructions: Start closing when card advantage is converted into a protected threat or mana sink. Prefer Hullbreaker Horror at instant speed with follow-up spells; use Oona, Queen of the Fae when excess mana can create blockers or lethal pressure over turns.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3
  • No-API allowed: no

Policy: Sideboard Role Alignment

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: sideboard
  • Cards: Leyline of the Void; Grafdigger's Cage; Pithing Needle; Toxic Deluge; Thoughtseize; Duress; Negate; Blue Elemental Blast; Feed the Swarm; Sheoldred's Edict
  • Phase windows: sideboarding, pregame for Leyline decisions
  • Runtime cues: sideboard_available; matchup_tags; revealed_opponent_cards
  • Use when: choosing a postgame configuration from the 10-card policy sideboard.
  • Avoid when: adding narrow cards without visible or matchup-supported targets.
  • Instructions: Add graveyard hate for graveyard engines, discard and Negate for stack-based combo/control, Toxic Deluge and Sheoldred's Edict for creature pressure or untargetable threats, Blue Elemental Blast for red spells or red permanents, and sideboard Feed the Swarm for enchantments. Preserve enough flash threats, permission, and card engines to keep the draw-go plan functional.
