Deck Name And Archetype

Survival is a Premodern green-based Survival of the Fittest midrange-combo toolbox deck with blue support for Opposition and Tradewind Rider, graveyard recursion through Genesis and Squee, Goblin Nabob, creature acceleration from Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, and Gaea's Cradle, and high-end creature threats enabled by Natural Order. Main deck count validates as 60 cards, and sideboard count validates as 15 cards.

The registered tags are midrange, combo, toolbox, and graveyard; the duplicate supplied tag string should be normalized to those four labels. The deck is best treated as a hybrid: it can play fair creature-midrange games, assemble soft-lock pressure with Opposition or Tradewind Rider plus expendable creatures, convert creatures into a large threat with Natural Order, and use Survival of the Fittest to turn excess creatures into the exact visible role-player needed.

Stock status is hybrid-stock rather than rogue: Survival of the Fittest, Squee, Goblin Nabob, Genesis, mana creatures, Wall of Roots, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Winter Orb, and Natural Order are recognizable Premodern shells, but the exact mix of Deranged Hermit, Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Ravenous Baloth, Nantuko Vigilante, Sylvan Safekeeper, and sideboard bullets should be piloted as this registered list, not as a generic Survival list.

Legality status is format-intended but should remain engine-validated at runtime. The card pool and deck size are consistent with Premodern construction assumptions, and no card here should be treated as legally available unless the Veles deck parser and rules engine confirm it from the registered 75. Sideboard plans must preserve the exact registered 75: sideboard cards are Blue Elemental Blast, Chill, Gilded Drake, Hydroblast, Masticore, Naturalize, Tormod's Crypt, and Xantid Swarm.

Mana and color concerns are real tactical constraints. The deck is base green with 8 Forest, 3 Gaea's Cradle, 4 Yavimaya Coast, 2 City of Brass, and 3 Island, so early green is mandatory, blue is important for Opposition and Tradewind Rider, and noncreature hands can make Gaea's Cradle weak or unusable. Birds of Paradise is the cleanest color fixer; Wall of Roots, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, and Quirion Ranger mostly support green acceleration and creature count rather than solving all blue requirements.

Role concerns should be decided from visible board state and legal actions, not from archetype autopilot. Survival of the Fittest is the defining engine, but some games require early mana development, Wall of Blossoms stabilization, Winter Orb pressure, or Natural Order before repeated Survival activations. Opposition and Tradewind Rider become stronger when the deck already has multiple creatures and mana-positive board texture; they are weaker when committing them prevents survival against visible pressure.

Opponent information status is unspecified. This guide must assume unknown opposing deck until public information, match labels, sideboarding stage, or Veles matchup context identifies the opponent. Do not infer hidden cards from format stereotypes; use only revealed cards, public zones, logged matchup labels, legal actions, and engine-provided state when selecting mulligans, Survival searches, Natural Order sacrifice lines, Winter Orb timing, combat, and sideboard plans.

Thesis

Survival assembles mana creatures, resilient green bodies, and Survival of the Fittest into a board-driven toolbox engine. The first priority is to create functional green mana and creature count with Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Quirion Ranger, and Gaea's Cradle; the second priority is to convert that board into selection, pressure, or denial through Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, and Winter Orb.

The deck wins by turning expendable creatures into one of three closing structures. It can use Survival of the Fittest to chain Squee, Goblin Nabob and Genesis into repeated creature access, then find Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Ravenous Baloth, Deranged Hermit, Nantuko Vigilante, Sylvan Safekeeper, or Tradewind Rider as the visible game demands. It can use Natural Order to sacrifice a green creature and put a major green threat or stabilizer onto the battlefield. It can also make the opponent's mana and board unusable with Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Winter Orb, and a wide creature base.

Prioritize board texture over abstract card advantage. Survival of the Fittest is strongest when the deck has discardable creatures, green mana, and enough time to turn searches into battlefield impact; Opposition and Tradewind Rider are strongest when multiple creatures are already available; Winter Orb is strongest when the deck can operate through mana creatures, Wall of Roots, Gaea's Cradle, and Quirion Ranger better than the opponent can operate through lands.

Do not pilot this as a pure combo deck that ignores pressure. Natural Order, Survival of the Fittest, and lock pieces are powerful, but the deck often must first block, preserve life total, develop mana, or spend a turn on Wall of Blossoms or Ravenous Baloth before committing. Do not pilot it as a pure control deck either: the list has limited hard removal, so it must eventually turn creature count into a lock, a large threat, or recurring threats.

Respect runtime legality and visible information above all strategic shortcuts. Search choices, Natural Order sacrifice targets, Survival of the Fittest activations, Opposition tap decisions, Tradewind Rider bounces, and Winter Orb timing must be selected from legal Veles actions and current public state, not from assumed hidden cards or generic Premodern heuristics.

Role Package

  • Threats: Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Deranged Hermit, Ravenous Baloth, Tradewind Rider, and creature swarms from mana creatures or tokens are the main ways to end games. Prefer the threat that changes the visible race immediately: Phantom Nishoba for life-total stabilization, Verdant Force or Deranged Hermit for board volume, Ravenous Baloth for a medium body plus life buffer, and Tradewind Rider when repeated bounce can dominate the board.

  • Payoffs: Natural Order converts a green creature into a high-impact green creature, while Opposition and Tradewind Rider convert extra creatures into denial. Winter Orb is a payoff for operating on creatures and Gaea's Cradle instead of normal land untaps; deploy it when the visible board suggests the deck can still cast or activate meaningful actions through the restriction.

  • Engines: Survival of the Fittest is the defining engine because it turns creature cards into the exact creature role needed. Squee, Goblin Nabob supports repeated Survival of the Fittest use, Genesis supports long-game recursion when the graveyard and mana allow it, and Gaea's Cradle can make creature development snowball into multiple actions.

  • Velocity: Wall of Blossoms replaces itself while adding a creature body, Wall of Roots accelerates while defending, Quirion Ranger can reuse a mana creature or manipulate land and creature resources, and the one-of toolbox creatures make Survival of the Fittest searches tactically dense. Treat velocity as board-building velocity, not spell-chain velocity.

  • Interaction: Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Winter Orb, Nantuko Vigilante, Ravenous Baloth, and sideboard Naturalize form the practical interaction suite. The deck answers problems by tapping, bouncing, destroying artifacts or enchantments, gaining life, blocking, or invalidating mana; it rarely wants to trade resources like a spell-heavy removal deck.

  • Protection: Sylvan Safekeeper protects key creatures when legal sacrifices and visible land count make the exchange acceptable. Xantid Swarm is the sideboard protection module for forcing important creature, Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, or threat turns through opposing instant-speed interaction when its trigger and combat legality are available.

  • Recursion: Squee, Goblin Nabob is the repeatable discard resource for Survival of the Fittest, and Genesis is the long-game creature recovery plan. Use recursion to outlast attrition, but do not spend early turns setting it up if visible pressure requires blockers, mana, or a faster Natural Order.

  • Mana: Birds of Paradise fixes colors, Llanowar Elves and Fyndhorn Elves accelerate green starts, Wall of Roots supplies resilient mana, Quirion Ranger can amplify creature mana, and Gaea's Cradle rewards creature density. City of Brass and Yavimaya Coast supply blue for Opposition and Tradewind Rider, while Island supports blue without life loss.

  • Sideboard modules: Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Chill are anti-red tools; Naturalize is artifact and enchantment interaction; Tormod's Crypt is graveyard pressure; Gilded Drake is a creature-theft bullet; Masticore is a repeatable board-control threat with upkeep risk; Xantid Swarm is anti-interaction protection. Use sideboard cards by matchup role and visible problem type, not because they are generically powerful.

Primary Win Conditions

  • Survival engine: Prioritize Survival of the Fittest when you have green mana, at least one discardable creature, and time to convert searches into board impact. Set up by developing Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, or Quirion Ranger, then use Survival of the Fittest to find Squee, Goblin Nabob for repeat activations, Genesis for long-game recursion, or the specific creature that answers the visible board. Execute by turning excess creatures into Verdant Force for inevitability, Phantom Nishoba for racing and life stabilization, Deranged Hermit for wide pressure and Opposition fuel, Ravenous Baloth for a stabilizing body, Nantuko Vigilante for artifact or enchantment pressure, Sylvan Safekeeper for protection, or Tradewind Rider for repeat bounce. Disruption to respect includes removal on Survival of the Fittest, graveyard pressure against Squee, Goblin Nabob or Genesis, and tempo pressure that makes repeated activations too slow; if those risks are visible, search for immediate battlefield impact instead of deeper value.

  • Natural Order threat line: Prioritize Natural Order when sacrificing a green creature produces a threat or stabilizer that is stronger than continuing to develop normally. Set up with expendable green creatures such as Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Quirion Ranger, Wall of Blossoms, Basking Rootwalla, or tokens from Deranged Hermit when available, and avoid sacrificing the only mana creature if the follow-up turn would collapse. Execute by choosing Verdant Force for long-game board dominance, Phantom Nishoba when life total and combat matter, Deranged Hermit when creature count and immediate board width matter, or Ravenous Baloth when a medium body plus life buffer is the safer line. Disruption to respect includes open interaction, sacrifice blowouts if the spell is countered, and board states where the chosen creature does not stabilize; when the opponent is pressuring hard, the best Natural Order line is often the one that changes combat immediately rather than the one with the highest ceiling.

  • Denial lock line: Prioritize Opposition, Tradewind Rider, and Winter Orb when your visible board has more functional mana and creatures than the opponent. Set up by making multiple cheap creatures, preserving Wall of Roots and mana creatures, and using Gaea's Cradle or Quirion Ranger to operate through constrained lands. Execute by using Opposition to tap key lands, attackers, blockers, or artifacts; using Tradewind Rider with spare creatures to bounce the most constraining permanent; and deploying Winter Orb when your mana creatures and Gaea's Cradle let you keep acting while the opponent is slowed. Disruption to respect includes creature removal that turns off Opposition or Tradewind Rider, artifact or enchantment answers to Winter Orb or Opposition, and creature-light boards where lock pieces do not function; do not prioritize this line over a stabilizing creature when behind on board.

Secondary Win Conditions

  • Creature pressure: Use Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Quirion Ranger, Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Roots, Basking Rootwalla, Ravenous Baloth, Deranged Hermit, and tokens as real combat resources once the board is stable. Small attacks matter when Opposition or Winter Orb has reduced opposing development, and Deranged Hermit can turn otherwise defensive bodies into a fast clock. Avoid needless attacks with creatures needed for mana, Survival of the Fittest discard chains, Opposition taps, Tradewind Rider costs, or blocking unless the race math clearly favors pressure.

  • Recursion pressure: Use Genesis and Squee, Goblin Nabob to make attrition games about repeated creature access instead of one-for-one exchanges. Squee, Goblin Nabob is primarily Survival of the Fittest fuel, while Genesis is a recovery engine when the graveyard is available and mana can be spent without losing the board. If graveyard access is blocked or too slow, shift to hard-cast threats, Natural Order, or denial rather than spending turns on a disabled recursion plan.

  • Toolbox answers as win enablers: Treat Nantuko Vigilante, Ravenous Baloth, Sylvan Safekeeper, and Tradewind Rider as cards that turn survival into victory. Nantuko Vigilante can clear a visible artifact or enchantment problem before a lock or attack line matters, Ravenous Baloth can buy the life needed to untap with an engine, Sylvan Safekeeper can protect a decisive creature when land sacrifice is affordable, and Tradewind Rider can remove blockers or mana sources repeatedly. These are not generic value choices; use them when their specific text or legal action changes the current board.

  • No burn or creature-land fallback: This list has no direct burn plan and no creature-land plan in the registered decklist. If the game must end without Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, or Tradewind Rider, win by honest combat from Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Deranged Hermit, Ravenous Baloth, tokens, and accumulated small creatures.

Emergency Lines

  • Behind on life: Stabilize before maximizing engine value. Prefer Wall of Roots and Wall of Blossoms as blockers, Natural Order into Phantom Nishoba or Ravenous Baloth when legal and sufficient, and Survival of the Fittest searches that affect combat immediately. Do not spend life casually with City of Brass or Yavimaya Coast if another legal mana line preserves life without losing the turn.

  • Behind on board: Add bodies before committing fragile denial pieces. Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Deranged Hermit, Ravenous Baloth, Phantom Nishoba, and Verdant Force are the recovery cards; Opposition and Tradewind Rider become strong only after there are enough creatures to tap or bounce while still blocking. If only one creature is available, be cautious with Natural Order sacrifice unless the resulting creature clearly stabilizes.

  • Behind on cards: Lean on Survival of the Fittest only if there is discard fuel and time. Squee, Goblin Nabob and Genesis can rebuild card flow, Wall of Blossoms replaces itself, and high-impact singletons can make each search matter. If hand size is low and Survival of the Fittest is absent, prioritize board-impacting topdecks over speculative setup.

  • Behind on mana: Preserve mana creatures and Wall of Roots, and delay Winter Orb unless it hurts the opponent more than you. Quirion Ranger and Gaea's Cradle can recover tempo when creature count is high, but creature removal can collapse that plan. Avoid sacrificing the only reliable green or blue source unless the legal payoff immediately solves the game.

  • Engine removed or graveyard disabled: Shift from recursion to battlefield pressure and lock pieces. Hard-cast Ravenous Baloth, Deranged Hermit, Tradewind Rider, Opposition, Winter Orb, Verdant Force, or Phantom Nishoba when mana allows, and use Natural Order as the cleanest remaining burst line. Do not keep searching for Squee, Goblin Nabob or Genesis value if visible graveyard pressure makes that plan nonfunctional.

  • Main win conditions answered: Win with the remaining axis instead of rebuilding the answered one. If Survival of the Fittest is gone, use Natural Order or hard-cast threats; if Natural Order is gone, use Survival of the Fittest and denial; if large creatures are removed, use Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Winter Orb, Deranged Hermit tokens, and small-creature attacks to close.

Resource Model

  • Life is a spendable buffer only when the board is stable. City of Brass and Yavimaya Coast can buy perfect colors for Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or sideboard interaction, but repeated pain is dangerous against pressure; choose Forest, Island, Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, or Gaea's Cradle lines when they produce the same legal play without life loss.

  • Hand size converts into selection through Survival of the Fittest. Discard expendable creatures first when a searched creature immediately changes the game, and treat Squee, Goblin Nabob and Genesis as engines that turn later hand or graveyard access into repeated creature quality. Do not discard the only creature that enables Natural Order, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or survival blocking unless the search is a committed stabilizing line.

  • Mana converts into board dominance faster than it converts into raw cards. Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Quirion Ranger, and Gaea's Cradle let the deck make threats, activate Survival of the Fittest, and still interact with Opposition or Tradewind Rider. Preserve these permanents when Winter Orb is involved because the deck wins the asymmetry by using creature mana and Gaea's Cradle while opposing lands stay constrained.

  • Board presence is both offense and fuel. Small creatures are mana, blockers, Opposition taps, Tradewind Rider support, Natural Order sacrifice material, Gaea's Cradle count, and eventual attackers; avoid trading them away for marginal damage unless the race is already favorable or the creature is no longer needed for an engine.

  • Graveyard resources matter when Genesis or Squee, Goblin Nabob is active. Use the graveyard as a reload zone only when visible graveyard hate is absent or too slow; if Tormod's Crypt or another public effect threatens the graveyard after sideboarding, shift value toward battlefield pressure, Natural Order, and hard-cast threats instead of investing extra actions into recursion.

  • Exile is usually a lost-resource zone for this deck. If a creature is exiled, stop planning Genesis recursion around it and choose future Survival of the Fittest searches from visible library and hand assumptions only as allowed by the engine.

  • Lands are resources, not just mana sources. Sylvan Safekeeper can convert lands into protection, but sacrificing lands is expensive under Winter Orb or when blue/green access is thin; use that protection for decisive creatures such as Tradewind Rider, a Natural Order threat, or a board-lock engine, not for replaceable mana creatures.

  • Sideboard bullets convert narrow matchups into cleaner resource exchanges. Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Chill, Gilded Drake, Masticore, Naturalize, Tormod's Crypt, and Xantid Swarm should be valued by the specific resource they defend or attack: life total, stack fights, creature boards, artifact/enchantment engines, graveyards, or permission windows.

Mana Guide

  • Green mana is the opening priority. Keep hands that can cast Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Survival of the Fittest, or Natural Order on schedule, and be skeptical of hands where blue exists but green development depends on drawing a source.

  • Blue mana becomes critical once the hand contains Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or sideboard permission. Birds of Paradise, City of Brass, Yavimaya Coast, and Island are the main blue access points; do not expose the only blue source to unnecessary land sacrifice or tap constraints when a blue engine card is already visible in hand.

  • Gaea's Cradle is a payoff land, not a safe first-source plan. It becomes excellent after creatures are on the battlefield, especially with Deranged Hermit, Verdant Force, Wall of Roots, and mana creatures, but hands relying on Gaea's Cradle without early creatures should be treated as low-mana hands.

  • City of Brass and Yavimaya Coast should fix colors for high-impact actions. Spend life for Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Natural Order setup, or timely sideboard cards, but choose pain-free mana when casting routine creatures or when the life total is already under pressure.

  • Forest sequencing usually comes before Island sequencing. A first Forest enables the elf package and Wall of Roots, while early Island is correct when the hand already has green from Birds of Paradise or Yavimaya Coast and needs to preserve blue for Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Xantid Swarm sequencing.

  • Quirion Ranger rewards careful land timing. When a legal line can use Quirion Ranger to reuse a mana creature or protect land drops under Winter Orb, consider whether playing the land before activation reduces options; follow the engine's legal actions and avoid assuming a return-land line is available until shown.

  • Wall of Roots is both acceleration and defense. Prefer it over a fragile one-mana creature when blocking matters, and count its mana contribution carefully before committing to Survival of the Fittest activation plus spell cast in the same turn.

  • Winter Orb changes land-use priorities. Deploy it only when creature mana, Gaea's Cradle, Quirion Ranger, or an already developed board lets you keep acting; avoid tapping out into Winter Orb if your next turn depends on untapping multiple lands.

  • Play lands before drawing only when the land drop is needed for a known legal action this turn. If Wall of Blossoms, Survival of the Fittest, or another visible draw/selection action may change the desired land, delay the land drop when legal and tactically safe so the agent can use the new public information.

  • Mulligan mana rules are strict but engine-aware. Keep most hands with green source plus early creature acceleration or Survival of the Fittest, especially with a path to blue; mulligan hands with no green, no early play, or only Gaea's Cradle as functional mana unless the engine-visible context supplies an exceptional reason.

Mulligan Guide

  • Strong keep: Forest or Yavimaya Coast plus Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, or Fyndhorn Elves with Survival of the Fittest is the cleanest opener; keep even with modest payoff because Survival of the Fittest converts any creature into the needed creature chain.

  • Strong keep: green source, Wall of Roots, Survival of the Fittest, and either Squee, Goblin Nabob, Genesis, Natural Order, Opposition, or Tradewind Rider gives development plus engine access; prioritize hands that can make two meaningful plays by turn 3.

  • Strong keep: early creature mana plus Gaea's Cradle plus Opposition or Natural Order is powerful when the first creature is already castable; treat Gaea's Cradle as explosive follow-up mana, not as a replacement for a normal opening source.

  • Medium keep: Forest, Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Roots, and Winter Orb is acceptable when the hand can defend and later use creature mana under Winter Orb; it is weaker without Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, or Tradewind Rider.

  • Medium keep: City of Brass or Yavimaya Coast plus Birds of Paradise and blue payoff is keepable if the pain enables Opposition or Tradewind Rider on schedule; against fast pressure, favor hands with Wall of Roots or Wall of Blossoms to absorb damage.

  • Risky keep: Survival of the Fittest with only one creature is fragile unless that creature is Squee, Goblin Nabob, Genesis, Wall of Blossoms, or a redundant mana creature; do not keep a hand where the only creature must both enable Survival of the Fittest and survive as the whole board plan.

  • Risky keep: Natural Order plus one green creature and no backup is matchup- and board-speed dependent; keep more often on the play with acceleration, and ship more often on the draw into likely removal or pressure unless the hand has Survival of the Fittest or extra creatures.

  • Automatic ship: no green-producing source, only Gaea's Cradle as mana, no castable early creature, or a hand whose first legal play is turn 3 Winter Orb should be mulliganed because the deck needs board presence before its lock and tutor cards matter.

  • Matchup-dependent keep: Winter Orb is a premium keep against slower mana-heavy opponents when paired with creature mana, but it is a liability against low-curve creature decks if the hand cannot block, stabilize, or advance Opposition.

  • Play/draw rule: on the play, prioritize explosive mana plus Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Winter Orb, or Natural Order; on the draw, value Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, and more stable colored mana because the opponent's first threat or disruption arrives first.

  • Trap hand: City of Brass, Island, Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Natural Order, Verdant Force looks powerful but lacks a castable green creature; ship unless the visible mulligan context makes a low-probability draw acceptable.

  • Trap hand: multiple top-end creatures such as Deranged Hermit, Phantom Nishoba, Ravenous Baloth, and Verdant Force without Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, or enough acceleration should not be kept just because the cards are individually strong.

Turn Arc

  • Turn 1 priority: cast Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, or Fyndhorn Elves from Forest, City of Brass, or Yavimaya Coast when legal; acceleration is preferred over holding up nothing because it enables turn 2 Survival of the Fittest, Wall of Roots, Winter Orb setup, or blue engine cards.

  • Turn 1 deviation: cast Quirion Ranger or Basking Rootwalla only when no mana creature is available or when the hand needs a cheap creature for Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or Natural Order; do not treat them as equal to Birds of Paradise when blue mana is needed.

  • Turn 2 priority: cast Survival of the Fittest if the hand has spare creature fuel or a clear need to find Squee, Goblin Nabob, Genesis, Wall of Roots, Quirion Ranger, Tradewind Rider, or a Natural Order target line; otherwise cast Wall of Roots or Wall of Blossoms to build board and preserve life.

  • Turn 2 deviation: cast Winter Orb only when creature mana or Gaea's Cradle already makes the restriction asymmetric; delaying Winter Orb is correct if it would trap the deck away from Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Natural Order, or Survival of the Fittest activations.

  • Turn 3 priority: choose the first commitment gate. If Survival of the Fittest is active, start building the engine with Squee, Goblin Nabob or Genesis when the game is not immediately about survival; if the board is wide, cast Opposition; if the opponent is vulnerable and a green creature is expendable, evaluate Natural Order.

  • Turn 3 deviation: cast Tradewind Rider when at least two other creatures can support future activations or when its body and blue engine role matter more than immediate Opposition; do not deploy it as an unsupported threat into obvious pressure unless the hand has no better stabilizer.

  • Turns 4-5 priority: convert the setup into a lock, tutor chain, or decisive board. Opposition plus multiple creatures should start denying the opponent's best mana, attacker, blocker, or engine permanent according to visible state; Winter Orb should join only when the deck can still function under it.

  • Turns 4-5 Natural Order line: sacrifice a replaceable green creature for the threat that best matches visible needs. Verdant Force pressures long games, Phantom Nishoba stabilizes races, Deranged Hermit expands creature count, and Ravenous Baloth is a stabilizing body when life total and combat matter.

  • Turns 4-5 Survival line: discard expendable creatures to assemble the next exact role rather than the flashiest card. Find Nantuko Vigilante for visible artifact or enchantment problems, Sylvan Safekeeper for protecting a decisive permanent, Ravenous Baloth for stabilization, or Tradewind Rider for repeatable board control.

  • Late-game priority: use Survival of the Fittest, Squee, Goblin Nabob, Genesis, Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, and Tradewind Rider to make every draw step or creature matter. Preserve lands for Sylvan Safekeeper only when protecting the engine or a lethal board is worth the mana loss.

  • Late-game deviation: stop investing in graveyard recursion when public graveyard hate or exile pressure makes Genesis or Squee, Goblin Nabob unreliable; shift to hard-cast threats, Natural Order, Opposition taps, and combat math from visible battlefield resources.

Card Roles

  • Survival of the Fittest: Treat Survival of the Fittest as the deck's main engine, not a generic value enchantment. Cast it early when the hand has spare creatures or a clear missing role, then convert low-impact creatures into Squee, Goblin Nabob, Genesis, Quirion Ranger, Tradewind Rider, Nantuko Vigilante, Ravenous Baloth, or a Natural Order target. Do not discard the only creature needed for Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or Natural Order unless the searched creature immediately replaces that battlefield function.

  • Squee, Goblin Nabob: Use Squee, Goblin Nabob as repeatable Survival of the Fittest fuel once the engine is online. Search for it when the game is not under immediate lethal pressure and when repeated tutoring will beat one-card-per-turn play. Do not overvalue casting it as a creature unless creature count for Opposition, Gaea's Cradle, or combat matters more than hand recursion.

  • Genesis: Use Genesis as the long-game creature recursion package after Survival of the Fittest can put it into the graveyard or when it naturally trades off. Its value rises in attrition games, removal-heavy matchups, and board stalls where recurring Wall of Blossoms, Ravenous Baloth, Tradewind Rider, or Sylvan Safekeeper changes future turns. Its value falls against visible graveyard hate or when mana is constrained by Winter Orb.

  • Birds of Paradise: Prioritize Birds of Paradise as the best one-mana accelerator because it fixes blue for Opposition and Tradewind Rider while also enabling faster Survival of the Fittest, Wall of Roots, Winter Orb, and Natural Order lines. Protect it from unnecessary combat because it is often worth more as mana, Opposition material, and Tradewind Rider support than as a disposable point of damage.

  • Llanowar Elves and Fyndhorn Elves: Use Llanowar Elves and Fyndhorn Elves as redundant green acceleration that makes Gaea's Cradle, Winter Orb, and Natural Order stronger. Lead with them when Birds of Paradise is absent or when colored fixing is already handled. Do not expose every mana creature into sweep-like pressure if one creature plus land drops already supports the next spell; the deck needs bodies, but it also needs reloads.

  • Wall of Roots: Treat Wall of Roots as the bridge between survival and engine turns. Cast it early against pressure, use it to pay for Survival of the Fittest activations or larger spells, and count it as a high-quality body for Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Gaea's Cradle, and Natural Order. Avoid spending its mana casually when the same turn may require interaction through Survival of the Fittest, Nantuko Vigilante setup, or a follow-up creature.

  • Wall of Blossoms: Cast Wall of Blossoms when the hand needs material, defense, or a creature that replaces itself. It is excellent with Genesis recursion, stabilizes early combat, and adds a low-risk body for Opposition, Gaea's Cradle, Tradewind Rider, and Natural Order. Do not block with it automatically if preserving an extra untapped creature unlocks Opposition or Tradewind Rider on the next decision.

  • Quirion Ranger: Use Quirion Ranger as a mana and untap amplifier once the battlefield has Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Tradewind Rider, or Gaea's Cradle pressure. Its tactical job is to turn one land and one creature into multiple actions, preserve functionality under Winter Orb, and create extra activations or mana after a commitment. Do not bounce lands without checking whether the lost land drop or color source prevents Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Survival of the Fittest, or Genesis use.

  • Opposition: Treat Opposition as a board-presence payoff and soft-lock card. Cast it when multiple creatures can immediately deny the opponent's highest-impact mana, attacker, blocker, or engine permanent. Pair it with Winter Orb only when creature mana, Gaea's Cradle, or Quirion Ranger keeps your side functioning. Do not cast Opposition onto a thin board just because it is available; one removal spell or bad attack can turn it into a low-impact enchantment.

  • Tradewind Rider: Use Tradewind Rider as repeatable board control once two other creatures can support activations. It is strongest with Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, tokens, mana creatures, Quirion Ranger, and Genesis recursion because those pieces turn creature count into tempo. Do not deploy it unsupported into a race unless the body matters immediately or the next turn clearly supplies the activation team.

  • Winter Orb: Use Winter Orb as an asymmetry card after creature mana or Gaea's Cradle is established. It is best against slower mana development, expensive spells, or opponents relying on repeated land untaps. It is risky against low-curve creature pressure if it delays your own Wall of Roots, Opposition, Survival of the Fittest activations, or Natural Order. Do not cast it simply on curve when it makes your next two turns worse than the opponent's.

  • Natural Order: Use Natural Order as a commitment gate that converts an expendable green creature into the visible game-winning or stabilizing threat. Sacrifice mana creatures, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Quirion Ranger, Basking Rootwalla, or tokens only after checking whether that body is needed for mana, Opposition, or Tradewind Rider. Against pressure, Phantom Nishoba or Ravenous Baloth-style stabilization can matter more than Verdant Force; against slow decks, Verdant Force or Deranged Hermit can end the game through creature volume.

  • Deranged Hermit: Use Deranged Hermit as a creature-count explosion for Opposition, Gaea's Cradle, Tradewind Rider, and combat. It is a strong Natural Order target when board width matters more than one large body. Card text check required for exact echo and token details at runtime; treat upkeep decisions and combat math as rules-engine dependent.

  • Verdant Force: Use Verdant Force as the long-game Natural Order target or hard-cast finisher when the matchup is about overwhelming removal, board stalls, or mana-heavy attrition. Its value is highest when the opponent cannot immediately remove it and when extra creatures improve Opposition or Tradewind Rider. Do not choose it over life-gain or board-stabilizing options when the visible battlefield shows an urgent race.

  • Phantom Nishoba: Use Phantom Nishoba as the stabilizing high-end creature when life total, racing, or creature combat is the key issue. It is often the Natural Order target that buys time rather than simply increasing pressure. Card text check required for exact damage-prevention and life-gain behavior; rely on the rules engine for legal combat outcomes.

  • Ravenous Baloth: Use Ravenous Baloth as a midgame stabilizer and Survival of the Fittest target when life total and combat are under pressure. Its sacrifice ability matters with Beast bodies only when legally available, so do not assume all creatures can be converted into life. It is also a reasonable hard-cast threat when Natural Order is too risky or the board needs a body now.

  • Nantuko Vigilante: Use Nantuko Vigilante as the searchable answer to visible artifact or enchantment problems. With Survival of the Fittest, find it before the problem fully locks the game if mana and timing allow. Card text check required for exact morph timing and target trigger details; do not assume it can answer a permanent unless the rules engine presents the legal action.

  • Sylvan Safekeeper: Use Sylvan Safekeeper to protect a decisive engine creature, Natural Order threat, or lock piece when sacrificing a land is less costly than losing the permanent. It is strongest after the deck already has creature mana, Gaea's Cradle, or a winning board. Do not sacrifice lands reflexively; each land may be needed for Genesis, Survival of the Fittest chains, blue spells, or post-Winter Orb recovery.

  • Basking Rootwalla: Use Basking Rootwalla as cheap creature material that supports Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, and Natural Order. Its discard synergy with Survival of the Fittest can create tempo when legal, but do not assume free casting unless the engine exposes the relevant action. It is mainly a flexible body, not a primary threat.

  • Gaea's Cradle: Treat Gaea's Cradle as payoff mana that depends on creatures already surviving. It enables explosive Survival of the Fittest chains, hard-cast top end, Opposition plus follow-up creatures, and post-Winter Orb development. Do not keep hands where Gaea's Cradle is the only mana source, and do not attack or trade away bodies without recalculating Cradle mana.

  • City of Brass and Yavimaya Coast: Use City of Brass and Yavimaya Coast to unlock blue cards on time, especially Opposition and Tradewind Rider. Their pain matters in races, so prefer Forest or creature mana when blue is not required that turn. Preserve colored flexibility when Survival of the Fittest may need activation plus a cast spell.

  • Forest and Island: Use Forest as the stable foundation for one-mana accelerants, Wall of Roots, Survival of the Fittest, and Natural Order setup. Use Island as clean blue access that avoids pain but does not cast the green early engine alone. Hands with Island-heavy mana must be judged by whether they still cast a turn 1 or turn 2 green creature.

Card Hover Notes

City of Brass

  • Deck role: Main deck, 2 copies; mana resource and color fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Fixes any color for Survival of the Fittest activations, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, sideboard Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Gilded Drake, Chill, and Xantid Swarm when Forest, Island, Birds of Paradise, or Yavimaya Coast do not cover the turn.
  • Timing: Use the pain when it unlocks a high-impact spell or activation this turn; prefer Forest, Island, Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, or Gaea's Cradle when they make the same play without life loss.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for one mana of any color and deals 1 damage to you whenever it becomes tapped.
  • Partners / packages: Enables blue-heavy cards Opposition and Tradewind Rider; enables red Squee, Goblin Nabob only if hard-casting Squee matters; enables sideboard blue cards Blue Elemental Blast, Chill, Gilded Drake, Hydroblast, and Xantid Swarm.
  • Role peers: Yavimaya Coast fixes green or blue with pain; Birds of Paradise fixes any color without land pain but is creature-removal vulnerable.
  • Failure modes: Repeated tapping can lose burn races; sacrificing it to Sylvan Safekeeper can strand Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Chill.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against red pressure, spend City of Brass life only for stabilizing plays such as Ravenous Baloth, Phantom Nishoba through Natural Order, Chill, Blue Elemental Blast, or Hydroblast.

Forest

  • Deck role: Main deck, 8 copies; basic mana resource and Quirion Ranger anchor.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides painless green for Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Naturalize, Xantid Swarm, and Quirion Ranger.
  • Timing: Prioritize early Forest when the hand needs one-mana green acceleration or turn-two Survival of the Fittest; consider holding a Forest land drop if Quirion Ranger returning a Forest creates a stronger same-turn line.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for {G}; can be returned by Quirion Ranger because the card specifically requires a Forest you control.
  • Partners / packages: Quirion Ranger reuses Forest to untap Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, Tradewind Rider, or a blocker; Natural Order needs green creature setup that Forest usually enables.
  • Role peers: Yavimaya Coast produces green with optional pain for colored mana; City of Brass produces any color but always hurts when tapped.
  • Failure modes: Forest does not cast Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Blue Elemental Blast, Chill, Gilded Drake, or Hydroblast alone; bouncing the only Forest can break the next green turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against Winter Orb games, Forest plus Quirion Ranger can preserve development while both players untap only one land.

Gaea's Cradle

  • Deck role: Main deck, 3 copies; legendary payoff land and explosive mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp, engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Converts creature count from Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Deranged Hermit tokens, Verdant Force tokens, and Basking Rootwalla into large green mana turns.
  • Timing: Strong after at least one creature is already on the battlefield; weak as an opener's only mana source. Deploy Winter Orb more confidently when Gaea's Cradle plus creatures still lets you cast or activate meaningful cards.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for {G} for each creature you control; output collapses if creatures die, are bounced, or are tapped only in a way that later changes combat and survival.
  • Partners / packages: Fuels Survival of the Fittest chains, Natural Order setup, hard-cast Deranged Hermit, Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Ravenous Baloth, and multiple Opposition turns.
  • Role peers: Wall of Roots, Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, and Fyndhorn Elves also accelerate, but Gaea's Cradle scales with the entire board.
  • Failure modes: Legendary copies can conflict; creature-light hands make it nearly blank; trading away bodies can unexpectedly reduce available mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against slower decks and board stalls; fragile against removal-heavy opponents that can kill the creatures before the Cradle turn.

Island

  • Deck role: Main deck, 3 copies; basic blue mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides painless blue for Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Blue Elemental Blast, Chill, Gilded Drake, and Hydroblast without relying on City of Brass, Yavimaya Coast, or Birds of Paradise.
  • Timing: Keep Island-heavy hands only when they still cast early green development through Forest, Yavimaya Coast, City of Brass, or Birds of Paradise. Play Island early when Opposition or Tradewind Rider is already in hand and green is covered.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for {U}; does not help cast one-mana green creatures or Survival of the Fittest by itself.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Forest or Yavimaya Coast to support green starts plus blue payoffs; protects life total compared with City of Brass and colored Yavimaya Coast activations.
  • Role peers: Birds of Paradise fixes blue while increasing creature count; City of Brass and Yavimaya Coast provide blue with life costs.
  • Failure modes: Multiple-Island hands can fail to cast Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, Survival of the Fittest, or Natural Order on time.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against burn or red pressure, Island is preferred blue access for Chill, Blue Elemental Blast, and Hydroblast because it does not deal damage to you.

Yavimaya Coast

  • Deck role: Main deck, 4 copies; mana resource and green-blue fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Bridges the deck's green opening cards with blue commitments, casting Birds of Paradise, Survival of the Fittest, Wall of Roots, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Chill, Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Gilded Drake.
  • Timing: Use {C} when colorless generic payment is enough; take 1 damage only when {G} or {U} changes the turn. Preserve it as blue access if Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or sideboard blue interaction is in hand.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for {C} without damage, or taps for {G} or {U} and deals 1 damage to you.
  • Partners / packages: Enables turn-one Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, or Basking Rootwalla; enables turn-two Survival of the Fittest or Chill; helps double-blue Opposition when paired with Island, Birds of Paradise, City of Brass, or another Yavimaya Coast.
  • Role peers: City of Brass fixes every color but always hurts when tapped; Forest and Island are painless but single-color.
  • Failure modes: It does not produce red for Squee, Goblin Nabob without pain-free alternatives, and repeated colored use can matter in races.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against red decks, count each colored Yavimaya Coast activation as real damage before choosing it over Forest, Island, Birds of Paradise, or Wall of Roots.

Basking Rootwalla

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy; singleton flexible body and Survival of the Fittest discard payoff.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler, engine fuel/material, threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Gives Survival of the Fittest a creature that can be discarded and, when the madness action is legal, still become a battlefield body for Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Natural Order, or combat.
  • Timing: Cast normally when the deck needs an early creature count; discard to Survival of the Fittest when the search is valuable and the madness cast is offered without consuming mana needed elsewhere.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {G} normally; madness {0} lets you cast it after discarding it; {1}{G} gives it +2/+2 until end of turn once each turn.
  • Mode map: Normal cast is a cheap creature-count play; madness after discard turns Survival of the Fittest into search plus body; pump is a combat mana sink when two mana changes a trade, damage clock, or survival block.
  • Partners / packages: Feeds Natural Order as a green sacrifice; increases Gaea's Cradle output; supplies a tap body for Opposition and Tradewind Rider.
  • Role peers: Quirion Ranger and Wall of Blossoms are other cheap green Natural Order bodies, but Basking Rootwalla uniquely converts a Survival discard into board presence.
  • Failure modes: Do not spend {1}{G} on pump if that mana is needed for Survival of the Fittest, Genesis, Natural Order, or Opposition sequencing.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against attrition or tempo when one extra body unlocks Gaea's Cradle mana or Tradewind Rider activation.

Birds of Paradise

  • Deck role: Main deck, 4 copies; core mana creature and color fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp, role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: The best turn-one accelerant because it produces any color for Survival of the Fittest chains, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, sideboard Blue Elemental Blast, Chill, Gilded Drake, Hydroblast, and Xantid Swarm.
  • Timing: Lead with Birds of Paradise when blue or sideboard-color timing matters; avoid attacking with it unless one flying damage is more important than mana, Opposition material, Tradewind Rider support, Gaea's Cradle count, or blocking.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {G}; taps for one mana of any color; contributes one creature to Gaea's Cradle and tap-effect counts.
  • Partners / packages: Quirion Ranger can untap Birds of Paradise after returning Forest; Opposition and Tradewind Rider convert Birds into tap or bounce fuel; Winter Orb becomes more asymmetric when Birds keeps producing mana.
  • Role peers: Fyndhorn Elves and Llanowar Elves accelerate green but do not fix blue or sideboard blue cards.
  • Failure modes: Creature removal can cut off blue access; do not sacrifice it to Natural Order if it is the only source for Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Chill unless the Natural Order target stabilizes immediately.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against red removal, protecting Birds matters most when the hand is otherwise missing blue or when Winter Orb is about to constrain lands.

Deranged Hermit

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy; singleton Natural Order target, board-width payoff, and token engine.
  • Role type: engine payoff, threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Creates four 1/1 green Squirrel creature tokens and gives Squirrels +1/+1, immediately expanding Gaea's Cradle mana, Opposition tap fuel, Tradewind Rider helper count, and combat pressure.
  • Timing: Choose with Natural Order when immediate body count is better than one large creature; hard-cast when five mana is available and the board needs width. Plan the next upkeep around echo {3}{G}{G}.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {3}{G}{G}; echo requires {3}{G}{G} at the beginning of your upkeep or Deranged Hermit is sacrificed; entering creates four Squirrel tokens.
  • Partners / packages: Natural Order can put Deranged Hermit directly onto the battlefield; Opposition taps multiple opposing artifacts, creatures, or lands with the Squirrel bodies; Gaea's Cradle scales sharply from five creatures.
  • Role peers: Verdant Force produces tokens over time; Deranged Hermit produces immediate width.
  • Failure modes: Failing or declining echo leaves only the tokens and removes the +1/+1 boost; sweepers or token hate can collapse the plan.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against midrange stalls and lock setups; weaker when the opponent can punish a wide board before Opposition or combat uses it.

Fyndhorn Elves

  • Deck role: Main deck, 2 copies; green mana creature and redundant one-mana acceleration.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp, engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Accelerates green starts, increases Gaea's Cradle output, and supplies a green creature for Natural Order, Opposition, and Tradewind Rider when Birds of Paradise is absent or blue fixing is already covered.
  • Timing: Cast early when the hand needs turn-two Survival of the Fittest, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Winter Orb setup, or faster Natural Order. Preserve it when green mana next turn matters more than one combat damage.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {G}; taps for {G}; adds one creature to Gaea's Cradle count and one possible tap body to Opposition or Tradewind Rider.
  • Partners / packages: Quirion Ranger can untap Fyndhorn Elves by returning Forest; Winter Orb is less symmetrical when Fyndhorn Elves supplies mana through the restriction.
  • Role peers: Llanowar Elves is the exact functional peer; Birds of Paradise is better when blue or off-color mana matters.
  • Failure modes: Does not cast Opposition or Tradewind Rider without blue help; exposing both Fyndhorn Elves and Llanowar Elves into removal can leave the deck creature-light.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against creature pressure, it may need to stay back as mana rather than trade; against control, it helps deploy multiple must-answer permanents quickly.

Genesis

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy; singleton graveyard recursion engine.
  • Role type: recursion, engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Turns Survival of the Fittest discard lines and creature trades into recurring access to key creatures such as Tradewind Rider, Ravenous Baloth, Sylvan Safekeeper, Wall of Blossoms, Nantuko Vigilante, Deranged Hermit, Phantom Nishoba, or Verdant Force.
  • Timing: Put Genesis into the graveyard when the game is attrition-based and {2}{G} during upkeep will not prevent survival or engine development. Hard-cast only when a 4/4 body is the best available use.
  • Inputs / outputs: At the beginning of your upkeep, if Genesis is in your graveyard, you may pay {2}{G}; if you do, return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
  • Partners / packages: Survival of the Fittest can discard Genesis while searching for Squee, Goblin Nabob, Tradewind Rider, Ravenous Baloth, or Nantuko Vigilante; Wall of Blossoms is a strong recursion target because it replaces itself.
  • Role peers: Squee, Goblin Nabob returns itself to hand; Genesis returns other creature cards but costs mana each upkeep.
  • Failure modes: Tormod's Crypt or opposing graveyard exile can remove it before upkeep; Winter Orb can make {2}{G} too expensive.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against removal-heavy midrange; reduce reliance when the opponent shows graveyard hate, fast combo, or burn pressure.

Llanowar Elves

  • Deck role: Main deck, 3 copies; green mana creature and core acceleration.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp, engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides turn-one acceleration into Survival of the Fittest, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Winter Orb, Natural Order, and faster green creature deployment while increasing creature count.
  • Timing: Cast on turn one when possible unless Birds of Paradise is needed for blue fixing. Keep it untapped for mana when the next action is more valuable than attacking or trading.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {G}; taps for {G}; contributes a creature to Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, and Natural Order sacrifice calculations.
  • Partners / packages: Quirion Ranger can untap Llanowar Elves by returning Forest; Gaea's Cradle rewards Llanowar Elves staying on the battlefield; Winter Orb becomes stronger when Llanowar Elves provides nonland mana.
  • Role peers: Fyndhorn Elves is the exact functional peer; Birds of Paradise is the fixing upgrade.
  • Failure modes: It cannot provide blue for Opposition or Tradewind Rider; sacrificing it to Natural Order can be wrong if it is the only green source for the following turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against decks with early removal, sequence so losing Llanowar Elves does not strand Survival of the Fittest or Wall of Roots if possible.

Nantuko Vigilante

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy; singleton tutorable artifact/enchantment answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal, tutor/search target, role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Gives Survival of the Fittest access to creature-based artifact or enchantment removal while still adding a body for Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, and Natural Order.
  • Timing: Search for it when a visible artifact or enchantment blocks Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Winter Orb, combat stabilization, graveyard recursion, or mana development. Morph setup is slower than Naturalize, so account for the turn cycle.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {3}{G} normally; can be cast face down as a 2/2 for {3}; turning it face up for morph {1}{G} destroys target artifact or enchantment.
  • Mode map: Hard-cast is a 3/2 creature when removal is not needed; face-down cast hides identity and enables the face-up trigger; turning face up is the interaction mode and needs a legal target artifact or enchantment.
  • Partners / packages: Survival of the Fittest finds Nantuko Vigilante; Genesis can recur it after trades; Naturalize is the sideboard instant-speed peer.
  • Role peers: Naturalize destroys target artifact or enchantment at instant speed but is not a creature or Survival target; Tradewind Rider can return a permanent without destroying it.
  • Failure modes: It cannot destroy creatures or lands; face-down setup can be too slow against immediate lock pieces.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Elevate against artifact or enchantment prison, graveyard-hate permanents, and enchantments that stop creature combat or Survival of the Fittest.

Phantom Nishoba

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy; singleton high-end stabilizer and Natural Order target.
  • Role type: lifegain/stabilization, threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Stabilizes races by attacking or blocking as a trampling seven-counter creature that gains life equal to damage it deals and prevents damage to itself by removing +1/+1 counters.
  • Timing: Prefer as a Natural Order target when life total and combat survival matter more than Verdant Force inevitability or Deranged Hermit width. Hard-cast only when seven mana including {G}{W} is actually available, usually through Birds of Paradise or City of Brass for white.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {5}{G}{W}; enters with seven +1/+1 counters; damage to it is prevented and removes a +1/+1 counter; whenever it deals damage, you gain that much life.
  • Partners / packages: Natural Order can search it because it is a green creature; Sylvan Safekeeper can give it shroud from targeted removal; Ravenous Baloth is the lower-cost life-buffer peer.
  • Role peers: Ravenous Baloth gains life through sacrificing Beasts; Phantom Nishoba gains life through combat damage and resists damage-based combat.
  • Failure modes: Exile, bounce, sacrifice effects, and non-damage removal bypass the damage-prevention counter shield; white mana can be hard for a normal cast.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against aggro, burn-adjacent races, and creature combat; less ideal against control with clean non-damage answers.

Quirion Ranger

  • Deck role: Main deck, 2 copies; one-mana utility creature and untap engine.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler, mana/fixing/ramp, role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Converts Forest plus a creature into extra mana, repeated Tradewind Rider pressure, better Opposition sequencing, or surprise blocking by returning a Forest and untapping target creature.
  • Timing: Use the once-per-turn activation only when the returned Forest and untap create a concrete advantage this turn or protect a key future turn. Delay land drops when doing so preserves a stronger Ranger line.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {G}; returns a Forest you control to its owner's hand as the cost; untaps target creature; activation is only once each turn.
  • Partners / packages: Untaps Birds of Paradise for any color, Fyndhorn Elves or Llanowar Elves for green, Wall of Roots for creature availability, Tradewind Rider for another bounce setup, or a blocker after attacking.
  • Role peers: Wall of Roots provides one green per turn without returning Forest; Birds of Paradise fixes color directly.
  • Failure modes: Returning the only Forest can block next-turn green; the ability cannot return Island, City of Brass, Gaea's Cradle, or Yavimaya Coast unless another effect makes them Forests.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Especially strong under Winter Orb because it lets one Forest and a mana creature function through limited land untaps.

Ravenous Baloth

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy; singleton stabilizing creature and Survival/Natural Order target.
  • Role type: lifegain/stabilization, threat/clock, engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides a 4/4 body and emergency life gain through sacrificing Beast creatures, mainly itself or Phantom Nishoba if sacrificing that Beast is ever better than keeping it.
  • Timing: Search or cast when life total and combat matter now. Activate the sacrifice ability when 4 life prevents lethal, wins a race, or converts a Beast that is already dying into life.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {2}{G}{G}; sacrifice a Beast to gain 4 life. The ability does not sacrifice arbitrary creatures.
  • Partners / packages: Survival of the Fittest finds it as a stabilizer; Natural Order can put it onto the battlefield; Genesis can recur it for repeated stabilizing bodies.
  • Role peers: Phantom Nishoba is the larger life-gain Natural Order target; Wall of Roots and Wall of Blossoms stabilize earlier without life gain.
  • Failure modes: Do not assume Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Deranged Hermit, or Verdant Force can be sacrificed to Ravenous Baloth; they are not Beasts.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against burn and creature pressure; less important against combo or control unless a 4/4 clock is needed.

Squee, Goblin Nabob

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy; singleton recursive Survival of the Fittest fuel.
  • Role type: recursion, engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Lets Survival of the Fittest repeatedly discard the same card, turning each {G} activation into a creature search without spending new hand resources.
  • Timing: Search for Squee when Survival of the Fittest is active, green mana is available over multiple turns, and the game is not demanding an immediate stabilizer such as Wall of Roots, Ravenous Baloth, Phantom Nishoba, or Nantuko Vigilante.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {2}{R} if cast; at the beginning of your upkeep, you may return Squee from your graveyard to your hand.
  • Partners / packages: Survival of the Fittest discards Squee to find Genesis, Tradewind Rider, Ravenous Baloth, Nantuko Vigilante, Deranged Hermit, Phantom Nishoba, or Verdant Force; City of Brass and Birds of Paradise can cast Squee if the 1/1 body matters.
  • Role peers: Genesis provides creature recursion from graveyard to hand but costs {2}{G} each upkeep; Squee returns only himself for free.
  • Failure modes: Graveyard exile stops the loop; casting Squee can be worse than keeping it as repeat discard fuel.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best in attrition and control games; deprioritize against fast pressure or visible Tormod's Crypt-style graveyard hate.

Sylvan Safekeeper

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy; singleton creature protection piece.
  • Role type: protection/evasion, engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Converts expendable lands into shroud for a decisive creature you control, protecting cards such as Tradewind Rider, Phantom Nishoba, Verdant Force, Ravenous Baloth, Deranged Hermit, Birds of Paradise, or a creature needed for Natural Order.
  • Timing: Use in response to targeted removal or an ability targeting your creature when saving that creature is worth losing a land. Do not sacrifice lands just to protect replaceable bodies.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {G}; sacrifice a land to give target creature you control shroud until end of turn. Shroud stops that creature from being targeted by spells or abilities, including your later beneficial targeted abilities.
  • Partners / packages: Survival of the Fittest finds Sylvan Safekeeper before committing a Natural Order payoff; Genesis can recur it after removal-heavy exchanges.
  • Role peers: Xantid Swarm protects key main-phase spells from defending player's spells after attacking; Sylvan Safekeeper protects creatures already on the battlefield from targeting.
  • Failure modes: Sacrificing City of Brass, Yavimaya Coast, Island, Forest, or Gaea's Cradle can strand Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Survival of the Fittest, Genesis, or Natural Order turns.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against targeted removal; weak against sweepers, edicts, sacrifice effects, and non-targeting removal.

Tradewind Rider

  • Deck role: Main deck, 2 copies; blue engine creature and repeatable bounce control.
  • Role type: engine piece, interaction-removal, threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Turns creature count into repeatable answers by returning target permanent to its owner's hand, letting the deck bounce lands under Winter Orb, blockers before attacks, attackers before combat damage, or lock pieces it cannot destroy.
  • Timing: Cast when two other creatures can support future activations or when a 1/4 flyer stabilizes the board. Activate only when tapping Tradewind Rider plus two untapped creatures is worth the tempo.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {3}{U}; activation taps Tradewind Rider and two untapped creatures you control to return target permanent to its owner's hand.
  • Partners / packages: Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Deranged Hermit tokens, and Verdant Force tokens supply helper creatures; Quirion Ranger can untap Tradewind Rider.
  • Role peers: Opposition taps target artifact, creature, or land but does not return permanents; Nantuko Vigilante and Naturalize destroy only artifacts or enchantments.
  • Failure modes: Unsupported Tradewind Rider is just a small flyer; tapping helpers can remove blockers, mana, Natural Order material, or Opposition coverage.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against single large threats, big mana, and prison permanents when repeated bounce matters more than a one-time Naturalize.

Verdant Force

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy; singleton top-end finisher and Natural Order target.
  • Role type: engine payoff, threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Creates a 1/1 green Saproling creature token at the beginning of each upkeep, overwhelming long games while increasing Gaea's Cradle mana, Opposition fuel, Tradewind Rider helpers, and combat bodies.
  • Timing: Choose with Natural Order when the opponent cannot immediately punish a seven-mana-style threat and the game is about inevitability. Hard-cast when Gaea's Cradle or mana creatures make {5}{G}{G}{G} realistic.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {5}{G}{G}{G}; produces one Saproling token at the beginning of each upkeep, including opposing upkeeps while it remains on the battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: Natural Order puts Verdant Force onto the battlefield; Opposition and Tradewind Rider convert tokens into denial; Gaea's Cradle turns each token into more green mana.
  • Role peers: Deranged Hermit creates immediate bodies; Verdant Force produces continuing bodies over multiple upkeeps.
  • Failure modes: Too slow when life total is under immediate pressure; clean removal before the next upkeep can make Natural Order a costly two-for-one.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against control, attrition, and board stalls; choose Phantom Nishoba or Ravenous Baloth instead when racing or life total is the bottleneck.

Wall of Blossoms

  • Deck role: Main deck, 2 copies; defensive cantrip creature and engine material.
  • Role type: card selection, engine fuel/material, lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: Replaces itself while adding a creature for Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Natural Order, and blocking.
  • Timing: Cast before committing to blind Survival of the Fittest or Natural Order lines when the extra card could change the turn and mana allows. Use as an early blocker against creature pressure.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}{G}; enters and draws a card; defender means it cannot attack.
  • Partners / packages: Genesis can recur Wall of Blossoms for repeated draw; Natural Order can sacrifice it because it is green; Opposition and Tradewind Rider can tap it as a creature because defender does not prevent that.
  • Role peers: Wall of Roots blocks larger creatures and produces mana; Wall of Blossoms draws a card but does not produce mana.
  • Failure modes: Do not sacrifice or tap it automatically if its 0/4 body is needed to block this turn; it does not pressure life totals directly.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against aggro, tempo, and attrition; weaker when the matchup demands immediate Winter Orb, Xantid Swarm, or Natural Order speed.

Wall of Roots

  • Deck role: Main deck, 4 copies; core defensive accelerator and creature-count bridge.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp, lifegain/stabilization, engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Blocks early attackers while producing green mana for Survival of the Fittest activations, Natural Order, Wall of Blossoms, Ravenous Baloth, Nantuko Vigilante, and other green development.
  • Timing: Cast early when under pressure or when the next turn needs extra mana. Use its mana once each turn only after checking whether that green is needed later in the turn cycle.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}{G}; put a -0/-1 counter on it to add {G}; activate only once each turn. Each counter reduces toughness by 1 but not power.
  • Partners / packages: Opposition and Tradewind Rider can tap Wall of Roots after it has produced mana; Gaea's Cradle counts it as a creature; Natural Order can sacrifice it as a green creature.
  • Role peers: Wall of Blossoms draws a card; Fyndhorn Elves and Llanowar Elves are faster but much smaller blockers.
  • Failure modes: Too many -0/-1 counters make it worse at blocking; sacrificing it can remove both defense and mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against creature pressure and Winter Orb games because it provides nonland green mana through constrained land untaps.

Natural Order

  • Deck role: Main deck, 2 copies; core sorcery tutor/payoff conversion.
  • Role type: tutor/search, engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Turns an expendable green creature into the best green creature for the visible board: Verdant Force for inevitability, Phantom Nishoba for life and combat, Deranged Hermit for immediate creature count, Ravenous Baloth for stabilizing body and Beast life utility, or Nantuko Vigilante when a creature body is needed and later artifact/enchantment interaction matters.
  • Timing: Cast only when sacrificing the chosen green creature does not collapse mana, blocking, Opposition, or Tradewind Rider unless the searched creature immediately solves that problem.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {2}{G}{G}; additional cost is sacrificing a green creature; searches your library for a green creature card, puts it onto the battlefield, then shuffles.
  • Partners / packages: Sacrifice candidates include Basking Rootwalla, Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Quirion Ranger, Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Roots, Ravenous Baloth, Nantuko Vigilante, Deranged Hermit, Phantom Nishoba, Verdant Force, and tokens if green.
  • Role peers: Survival of the Fittest searches creature to hand; Natural Order puts a green creature directly onto the battlefield at sorcery speed with sacrifice risk.
  • Failure modes: Countermagic or removal on the payoff can turn it into a major resource loss; it cannot search Squee, Goblin Nabob, Tradewind Rider, Gilded Drake, Xantid Swarm, or Masticore because they are not green creature cards.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong when one creature changes the board immediately; weaker into open permission without Xantid Swarm or redundant bodies.

Opposition

  • Deck role: Main deck, 3 copies; core blue soft-lock enchantment.
  • Role type: engine payoff, interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Converts untapped creatures into taps on target artifact, creature, or land, letting the deck deny mana, stop attackers, clear blockers, or suppress artifact activations.
  • Timing: Cast when there are enough creatures to tap opposing resources while still keeping mana, blocks, or Tradewind Rider support. Use on opponent upkeep for land denial, before combat for attackers, and before damage or blocks when combat math changes.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {2}{U}{U}; taps an untapped creature you control to tap target artifact, creature, or land.
  • Partners / packages: Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Deranged Hermit tokens, Verdant Force tokens, and Basking Rootwalla all become tap fuel; Winter Orb magnifies land taps.
  • Role peers: Tradewind Rider returns target permanent but costs three creatures including itself; Opposition needs only one creature per tap but does not remove the permanent.
  • Failure modes: Thin creature boards make it low-impact; tapping mana creatures can strand spells; tapping blockers can expose lethal crackback.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against big mana, creature stalls, and decks relying on key lands or attackers; less effective when the opponent operates on cheap spells already cast.

Survival of the Fittest

  • Deck role: Main deck, 4 copies; defining core engine.
  • Role type: engine piece, tutor/search, discard outlet.
  • Deck-specific job: Turns creature cards in hand into exact creature access: Squee, Goblin Nabob for repeat fuel, Genesis for recursion, Ravenous Baloth or Phantom Nishoba for stabilization, Nantuko Vigilante for artifact/enchantment problems, Sylvan Safekeeper for protection, Tradewind Rider for bounce, Deranged Hermit or Verdant Force for closing, and Quirion Ranger or Wall of Roots for mana texture.
  • Timing: Cast early with green mana and discard fuel, but activate only when the searched creature improves the current turn cycle or future plan more than keeping the discarded creature.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}{G}; activation costs {G} and discards a creature card; searches library for a creature card, reveals it, puts it into hand, then shuffles.
  • Partners / packages: Squee, Goblin Nabob returns to hand for repeat discard; Genesis benefits from being in graveyard; Basking Rootwalla may be cast for madness {0} when discarded and the legal action is offered.
  • Role peers: Natural Order searches green creature directly to battlefield but requires sacrificing a green creature and is sorcery speed.
  • Failure modes: Creature-light hands weaken it; graveyard hate weakens Squee and Genesis lines; discarding the only Natural Order body or Opposition fuel can lose tempo.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best in attrition and toolbox games; against fast pressure, search for Wall of Roots, Ravenous Baloth, Phantom Nishoba, or Deranged Hermit impact before long recursion.

Winter Orb

  • Deck role: Main deck, 3 copies; artifact mana-denial payoff.
  • Role type: engine payoff, hate piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Punishes opponents relying on land untaps while this deck uses Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, Gaea's Cradle, Quirion Ranger, Opposition, and existing board presence to keep acting.
  • Timing: Cast after creature mana or Gaea's Cradle is online, or when Opposition can tap opposing lands. Delay if your next turns need multiple land untaps for Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Naturalize.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {2}; as long as Winter Orb is untapped, players cannot untap more than one land during untap steps.
  • Partners / packages: Opposition can tap opposing lands under Winter Orb; Quirion Ranger plus Forest and Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, or Llanowar Elves helps break parity.
  • Role peers: Opposition and Tradewind Rider also deny resources but require creatures each activation; Winter Orb constrains lands continuously while untapped.
  • Failure modes: Can lock you out if creature mana dies or blue-green requirements are unmet; poor against low-curve creature boards that already deployed threats.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control, big mana, and slow combo; reduce against red burn, fast creature swarms, or artifact/enchantment prison where board survival matters first.

Blue Elemental Blast

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 2 copies; anti-red stack and permanent answer.
  • Role type: modal utility, interaction-stack, interaction-removal, sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Protects Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Natural Order payoffs, Ravenous Baloth, Phantom Nishoba, or life total from red spells, and destroys red permanents that already resolved.
  • Timing: Hold for a red spell on the stack or a red permanent whose removal changes the race or protects the engine. Do not spend on a low-impact red spell if a lethal burn spell or red removal on a stabilizer is likely and visible mana suggests it.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {U}; consumes one card and blue mana to counter or destroy a red object matching the chosen mode.
  • Mode map: Counter target red spell answers only a red spell on the stack; destroy target red permanent answers only a red permanent already on the battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: Island, Birds of Paradise, City of Brass, and Yavimaya Coast cast it; Chill taxes red spells while Blue Elemental Blast answers the red spell that still matters.
  • Role peers: Hydroblast can target a spell or permanent and checks whether it is red for the effect; Blue Elemental Blast requires target red spell or target red permanent for its modes.
  • Failure modes: Dead against nonred threats; cannot counter a resolved permanent with the counter mode.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Bring against red burn, red removal, red creatures, and red combo turns.

Chill

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 2 copies; anti-red tax enchantment.
  • Role type: hate piece, sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Makes red spells cost {2} more, buying time for Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Ravenous Baloth, Phantom Nishoba, and Natural Order lines.
  • Timing: Cast early when the opponent's revealed plan needs multiple red spells or red removal tempo. It is less urgent if the immediate problem is a nonred creature already on the battlefield.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}{U}; produces a static tax on red spells, not on red permanents already resolved or nonred abilities.
  • Partners / packages: Blue Elemental Blast and Hydroblast cover key red spells or permanents that get through; Island, Birds of Paradise, City of Brass, and Yavimaya Coast provide blue.
  • Role peers: Blue Elemental Blast and Hydroblast are one-for-one red answers; Chill is a continuous tax with no direct effect on board permanents.
  • Failure modes: Poor against decks splashing only a few red cards or relying on colorless/nonred threats; drawing multiples may not matter if one Chill already taxes the relevant spells enough.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Bring against burn and red creature pressure where slowing several red spells changes the life race.

Gilded Drake

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy; creature-theft bullet and evasive body.
  • Role type: interaction-removal, sideboard bullet, threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Exchanges itself for an opposing creature that dominates combat, races faster than your board, or represents the opponent's core plan.
  • Timing: Cast when the target creature is worth giving the opponent a 3/3 flyer and the exchange immediately stabilizes or turns the game. Avoid against token boards or small utility creatures.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}{U}; enters with a trigger to exchange control of Gilded Drake and up to one target creature an opponent controls; if you do not or cannot make an exchange, sacrifice Gilded Drake. The ability still resolves if its target becomes illegal.
  • Partners / packages: Survival of the Fittest can find Gilded Drake after sideboarding because it is a creature; Tradewind Rider can later bounce permanents, but bouncing Gilded Drake has exchange-risk implications.
  • Role peers: Tradewind Rider temporarily returns any target permanent; Gilded Drake permanently changes control if the exchange succeeds.
  • Failure modes: Giving away a 3/3 flyer is dangerous if the stolen creature is not much better; sacrifice effects or bounce can undo the exchange value.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Bring against single-threat midrange, reanimation-style threats, or large creature decks.

Hydroblast

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy; flexible anti-red instant.
  • Role type: modal utility, interaction-stack, interaction-removal, sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Answers red pressure or red interaction by countering a spell if it is red, or destroying a permanent if it is red, protecting life total and decisive cards such as Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Ravenous Baloth, and Phantom Nishoba.
  • Timing: Hold for a red spell on the stack that threatens lethal, removes a stabilizer, or breaks a key engine; destroy a red permanent when it materially changes combat or lock stability.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {U}; consumes one blue mana and a card for a red-dependent effect.
  • Mode map: Counter target spell if it's red can target a spell and only counters it if it is red on resolution; destroy target permanent if it's red can target a permanent and only destroys it if it is red on resolution.
  • Partners / packages: Island, Birds of Paradise, City of Brass, and Yavimaya Coast cast it; Chill increases the cost of red spells while Hydroblast covers the important one.
  • Role peers: Blue Elemental Blast requires target red spell or red permanent up front; Hydroblast has “if it's red” wording that matters for legal targeting and resolution.
  • Failure modes: Does not answer nonred spells or nonred permanents; cannot destroy a red spell on the stack with the destroy-permanent mode.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Bring against red decks where one critical spell or permanent decides the race.

Masticore

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy; repeatable creature-control threat with upkeep pressure.
  • Role type: interaction-removal, engine piece, threat/clock, sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Controls small and medium creatures through repeatable 1-damage activations while presenting a 4/4 body, but demands a discard every upkeep to remain on the battlefield.
  • Timing: Cast when the hand, Squee, Goblin Nabob, Genesis plan, or excess creatures can support the upkeep and repeat damage will matter more than preserving cards for Survival of the Fittest.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {4}; at upkeep, sacrifice it unless you discard a card; {2} deals 1 damage to target creature; {2} regenerates it.
  • Mode map: Damage activation kills or finishes target creatures based on toughness and damage already marked; regeneration must be activated before a destruction event, then replaces destruction, taps Masticore, removes damage, and removes it from combat.
  • Partners / packages: Squee, Goblin Nabob can supply repeat discard; Genesis can help rebuild creatures after Masticore trades resources; Opposition and Tradewind Rider can contain larger threats while Masticore handles smaller ones.
  • Role peers: Gilded Drake answers one large creature; Masticore repeatedly damages creatures at a mana and card cost.
  • Failure modes: Upkeep discard can consume essential Survival of the Fittest fuel or interaction; 1 damage does not shrink creatures and may be too slow alone.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Bring against creature swarms or attrition boards where repeat damage is decisive.

Naturalize

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 4 copies; instant artifact/enchantment answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal, sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Destroys target artifact or enchantment that stops Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Winter Orb, Tradewind Rider, Gaea's Cradle mana, combat stabilization, or graveyard recursion.
  • Timing: Hold for the artifact or enchantment that actually changes the game unless using it now unlocks a decisive attack, engine turn, or survival line. End-step use is preferred when waiting preserves information without risking lockout.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}{G}; destroys target artifact or enchantment at instant speed.
  • Partners / packages: Forest, Birds of Paradise, City of Brass, Yavimaya Coast, Wall of Roots, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, and Gaea's Cradle provide green; Nantuko Vigilante is the creature-based main-deck counterpart.
  • Role peers: Nantuko Vigilante can be found by Survival of the Fittest but needs morph timing for its destroy trigger; Tradewind Rider can return any target permanent without destroying it.
  • Failure modes: Cannot destroy creatures, lands, planeswalkers, or nonartifact nonenchantment threats; spending it on a minor target can leave no answer for a lock piece.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Bring against artifact/enchantment prison, graveyard-hate permanents, enchantment engines, artifact mana engines, and combat-locking permanents.

Tormod's Crypt

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 2 copies; zero-mana graveyard hate artifact.
  • Role type: hate piece, sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Exiles target player's graveyard to stop opposing recursion, reanimation, flashback-style use, threshold-style payoffs, or graveyard engines that outscale Genesis and Squee, Goblin Nabob.
  • Timing: Play early when free deployment does not cost tempo, but activate only when the targeted graveyard is about to matter or waiting risks losing the window. Exiling after costs are already paid for a graveyard spell usually will not undo that spell.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {0}; taps and sacrifices itself to exile target player's graveyard.
  • Partners / packages: Naturalize can answer artifact or enchantment support around opposing graveyard plans; Survival of the Fittest and Genesis plans may need to reduce graveyard reliance when Crypt mirrors or opposing hate appear.
  • Role peers: No direct main-deck peer; closest role overlap is Nantuko Vigilante or Naturalize against artifact/enchantment graveyard enablers, but neither exiles graveyards.
  • Failure modes: Activating too early may remove irrelevant cards while the opponent rebuilds; it targets a player, so choose the graveyard that matters.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Bring against graveyard combo, recursive threats, reanimation-style threats, flashback-heavy decks, and threshold-style pressure.

Xantid Swarm

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 2 copies; proactive anti-interaction creature.
  • Role type: protection/evasion, sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Attacks to stop the defending player from casting spells for the rest of the turn, opening a protected postcombat main phase for Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, Winter Orb, Tradewind Rider, or a decisive creature.
  • Timing: Cast before the key turn against permission or instant-speed interaction. Attack only when it can legally attack and the trigger enables an important same-turn commitment; do not throw it into a visible blocker for no protected follow-up.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {G}; 0/1 flying creature; when it attacks, defending player cannot cast spells this turn.
  • Partners / packages: Natural Order and Survival of the Fittest benefit from a postcombat window; Opposition or Winter Orb can be committed after the trigger limits defending-player stack interaction.
  • Role peers: Sylvan Safekeeper protects creatures already on the battlefield from targeted spells or abilities; Xantid Swarm protects the turn's spell sequence from the defending player casting spells.
  • Failure modes: Does not stop abilities, already-resolved permanents, or nondefending players; removal before combat can prevent the trigger.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Bring against blue control, stack-interaction combo, and tempo decks where forcing one main phase matters.

Interaction Priorities

  • Remove lock-breaking permanents first when they stop Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Winter Orb, or Gaea's Cradle from functioning. Use Nantuko Vigilante or Naturalize on visible artifacts or enchantments that deny activations, blank creature mana, shut off attacks, or remove the graveyard plan before spending them on low-pressure value pieces. Card text check required for Nantuko Vigilante timing; take the legal action only when Forge exposes it.

  • Bounce the opponent's highest-tempo permanent with Tradewind Rider when the activation protects a lock, denies a critical land under Winter Orb, removes a blocker for lethal pressure, or resets an opposing threat you cannot permanently answer. Prefer bouncing lands against slow decks after Opposition or Winter Orb is established; prefer bouncing attackers, blockers, or engine permanents against creature decks when life total or board control is under pressure.

  • Counter red spells with Blue Elemental Blast or Hydroblast only when the visible red spell or permanent materially changes the game. Protect Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Deranged Hermit, Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Ravenous Baloth, or a lethal combat step before countering a minor burn spell to the face. Against red pressure, preserve counters for removal aimed at the creature that stabilizes the board, a lethal damage spell, or a permanent that invalidates Chill.

  • Exile graveyards with Tormod's Crypt when the opponent's visible graveyard represents immediate recursion, threshold-style pressure, flashback, reanimation, or a known graveyard payoff. Do not fire Tormod's Crypt just because cards are present; wait for a legal window where the exile either stops an announced action, denies a visible next-turn payoff, or protects the Survival of the Fittest and Genesis long game.

  • Use Gilded Drake as a high-impact answer to a creature that is worth exchanging for, not as a routine tempo play. Card text check required for exact exchange behavior; only commit when the rules engine presents the legal action and the visible creature materially outclasses your board or threatens to end the game.

  • Use Masticore as repeatable interaction only when its upkeep and mana demands do not collapse the Survival of the Fittest engine. Card text check required for exact discard, damage, and regeneration actions; prioritize killing small utility creatures, evasive attackers, and blockers that prevent a decisive attack before spending resources on creatures already contained by Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Opposition, or Tradewind Rider.

  • Bait removal with redundant creatures before exposing the permanent that matters. Lead with Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Roots, Basking Rootwalla, or Quirion Ranger when the hand already has enough mana, then commit Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Natural Order, or Sylvan Safekeeper when the opponent's visible mana and prior actions make the risk acceptable.

  • Ignore low-impact permanents when the current plan is already stronger than answering them. Do not spend Naturalize, Nantuko Vigilante, Tradewind Rider activations, Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Tormod's Crypt on a card that neither races you, disrupts your engine, breaks Winter Orb, answers your lock, nor changes combat math this turn cycle.

  • Change interaction posture by archetype. Against fast creature decks, tap or bounce attackers and protect life-gain bodies such as Phantom Nishoba and Ravenous Baloth. Against control or combo, prioritize Survival of the Fittest, Winter Orb, Xantid Swarm, and pressure while using Tradewind Rider to deny mana. Against graveyard decks, hold Tormod's Crypt until it stops a real payoff. Against artifact or enchantment decks, conserve Naturalize and Nantuko Vigilante for the permanent that actually blocks the engine or kill.

Combat And Trading Rules

  • Preserve creature count when Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Natural Order, or Winter Orb is the active plan. Do not trade Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Quirion Ranger, Wall of Blossoms, or tokens unless the trade prevents major damage, protects a key permanent, or the creature is no longer needed for mana and activation count.

  • Block early with Wall of Roots and Wall of Blossoms to buy time for Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or Natural Order. Treat these Walls as stabilizers first and expendable Natural Order material second; sacrificing or losing them is correct when the follow-up threat stabilizes better than the Wall would.

  • Attack with mana creatures only when damage matters more than future mana, Opposition taps, Tradewind Rider support, or Gaea's Cradle count. Small attacks are attractive against control with no profitable blocks, but they are usually wrong when racing pressure, setting up Winter Orb asymmetry, or holding up Survival of the Fittest activations.

  • Use Deranged Hermit and Verdant Force to turn board width into attacks after the opponent is constrained. Card text check required for exact token and upkeep details on Deranged Hermit. Attack when blocks either fail to reduce the lock, enable lethal soon, or leave enough untapped creatures for Opposition and Tradewind Rider after combat.

  • Treat Phantom Nishoba as the preferred combat stabilizer when life total is under pressure. Card text check required for exact damage-prevention and life-gain behavior; use the rules engine's combat output rather than assuming combat math. Favor blocks and attacks that gain life or remove pressure without exposing the deck to a crack-back.

  • Use Ravenous Baloth to stabilize races and threaten blocks, but do not assume every creature can become life. Card text check required for exact sacrifice eligibility. Preserve Ravenous Baloth when its body controls combat; sacrifice only when the legal action prevents lethal damage, wins a race, or turns an otherwise dying eligible creature into life.

  • Protect decisive creatures with Sylvan Safekeeper only when the saved creature is worth more than the sacrificed land. Save Survival of the Fittest payoffs, Tradewind Rider, Phantom Nishoba, Verdant Force, or a lethal board from targeted removal; avoid sacrificing lands when you still need colors for Genesis, Survival of the Fittest chains, Opposition, or post-Winter Orb recovery.

  • Decline trades that shrink the engine more than the opponent's battlefield. Trading a token or Basking Rootwalla for a relevant attacker can be correct; trading Quirion Ranger, Birds of Paradise, or a Wall that powers Gaea's Cradle can be wrong even when the exchange looks equal on board.

  • Attack differently by matchup role. Against control, pressure life totals once Survival of the Fittest or Winter Orb is online and keep enough bodies untapped for protection. Against aggro, block first and win later with Phantom Nishoba, Ravenous Baloth, Opposition, or Natural Order. Against combo, attack more aggressively when interaction is limited, but keep Xantid Swarm, Winter Orb, and Survival of the Fittest functionality intact.

Selection And Tutor Rules

  • Use Survival of the Fittest as the main selection engine once green mana and a discardable creature are available. Convert low-impact creatures into the specific creature that solves the visible board: Wall of Blossoms or Wall of Roots for time, Quirion Ranger for mana and tap-engine leverage, Sylvan Safekeeper for protection, Tradewind Rider for repeatable bounce, Ravenous Baloth or Phantom Nishoba for life pressure, Nantuko Vigilante for artifact or enchantment pressure, Genesis for recursion, Squee, Goblin Nabob for repeatable fuel, Deranged Hermit or Verdant Force for board width, and Basking Rootwalla when the engine needs a cheap body.

  • Find Squee, Goblin Nabob early with Survival of the Fittest when the game is not ending immediately and the graveyard is not under visible exile pressure. Squee, Goblin Nabob turns future Survival of the Fittest activations into repeatable selection without spending real hand resources; do not prioritize it over a needed blocker, protection creature, Natural Order target, or immediate answer.

  • Put Genesis into the graveyard through Survival of the Fittest when the game is becoming attrition-based and mana will support future recursion. Card text check required for exact trigger timing and payment, but the tactical use is conditional: prefer Genesis when recurring Tradewind Rider, Sylvan Safekeeper, Ravenous Baloth, Phantom Nishoba, or utility creatures will beat removal and trades.

  • Cast Natural Order only after choosing the payoff from visible needs and available sacrifice material. Sacrifice a green creature that is replaceable relative to the payoff; search for Verdant Force when board width wins, Phantom Nishoba when life stabilization matters, Deranged Hermit when immediate bodies matter, or Ravenous Baloth when a mid-sized stabilizer is enough. Do not sacrifice a key Quirion Ranger, Tradewind Rider support creature, or sole mana source unless the resulting creature clearly changes the game.

  • Sequence Wall of Blossoms before blind tutor commitments when an extra card could change the line. Wall of Blossoms is the deck's cleanest main-deck draw effect; use it before deciding whether to spend Survival of the Fittest, expose Natural Order, or commit Opposition when mana and timing allow.

  • Treat land drops as selection commitments because Quirion Ranger and Gaea's Cradle care about exact land and creature counts. Prefer making required colored land drops before using Quirion Ranger to return Forest, and avoid playing a bounced Forest too early if holding it preserves a later untap, land-drop, or post-Winter Orb recovery line.

  • Use Nantuko Vigilante as toolbox interaction only when the rules engine exposes the relevant action and the target artifact or enchantment matters. Card text check required for exact morph and trigger behavior; do not spend the tutor slot on Nantuko Vigilante if Naturalize, Tradewind Rider, Opposition, or racing already handles the permanent.

Priority And Stack Rules

  • Activate Survival of the Fittest during safe priority windows when the next creature materially improves the current turn cycle. End-step activations are preferred when waiting hides the target choice and preserves mana, but main-phase activation is correct when the searched creature must be cast, discarded, protected, or used for Natural Order before passing.

  • Use Opposition at instant speed to deny the opponent's highest-impact resource before it is used. Tap lands before main-phase mana, tap attackers before combat when legal, tap blockers before attacks when that changes damage, and tap artifacts only when their activated or static role matters. With Winter Orb visible, prioritize tapping the opponent's lands while keeping enough of your own mana and creatures functional.

  • Use Tradewind Rider only when the bounce is worth tapping Tradewind Rider plus two other creatures. Return a permanent that breaks a lock, removes a lethal attacker, rebuys a strong enters-the-battlefield creature, disrupts mana under Winter Orb, or answers an artifact/enchantment/creature that cannot be handled more cheaply.

  • Use Quirion Ranger as a tactical untap effect, not as automatic mana. Untap Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Wall of Roots, Tradewind Rider, or a key blocker only when the returned Forest and once-per-turn limit are acceptable. Preserve the action for combat, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or colored mana if those windows are more important than immediate acceleration.

  • Let low-impact spells resolve when saving priority actions protects the engine. Do not spend Survival of the Fittest mana, Opposition taps, Tradewind Rider activations, Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Naturalize, or Tormod's Crypt on stack or board events that do not threaten Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Winter Orb, lethal damage, a decisive creature, or the opponent's combo turn.

  • Respond to removal with Sylvan Safekeeper only when the protected creature or board state is worth sacrificing a land. Save Tradewind Rider, Phantom Nishoba, Verdant Force, a Natural Order payoff, or the creature enabling a lock; decline protection when land loss prevents future Survival of the Fittest chains, Genesis recursion, or colored mana.

  • Resolve upkeep and optional payments according to the active plan. Card text check required for Deranged Hermit, Genesis, Squee, Goblin Nabob, and sideboard Masticore details; pay or choose optional actions only when the permanent, recursion, or discard cost advances the visible plan more than preserving mana, cards, or board stability.

  • Hold graveyard and artifact/enchantment interaction for the action it stops. Use Tormod's Crypt in response to visible recursion, flashback, reanimation, or threshold-style payoff; use Naturalize on the permanent that blocks Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Winter Orb, combat stabilization, or lethal pressure rather than the first legal target.

Sideboard Map

  • Role cards: Blue Elemental Blast and Hydroblast are red-interaction cards for turns where survival matters more than engine density. Bring them against red removal, red burn, red creature pressure, and red combo turns; hold them for the spell or permanent that threatens Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, a Natural Order payoff, or life total. They are weaker when the opponent has few red cards, when the pressure is mostly colorless, or when the game is about permanent types they cannot answer.

  • Role card: Chill is a red-tax card that changes the race math by making repeated red spells inefficient. Bring it when the opponent needs to cast multiple red spells across a turn cycle or when protecting mana creatures from red removal buys time for Opposition, Survival of the Fittest, or Natural Order. It is bad when the opponent is only splashing red, when a single large nonred threat decides the game, or when drawing multiple Chill would not affect the visible board.

  • Role card: Gilded Drake is a creature-swing card against decks that rely on one large creature, one protected creature, or one Natural Order-style payoff. Use it when taking the opposing threat is better than bouncing it with Tradewind Rider or racing it with Phantom Nishoba. It is bad against token boards, small utility creatures, sacrifice-heavy boards, or any visible board where giving the opponent Gilded Drake creates more pressure than the stolen creature removes.

  • Role card: Masticore is a grind and creature-control card when the opponent attacks with many small or medium creatures and the game will be decided by battlefield attrition. Card text check required for exact upkeep and activation details; use it only when the hand, Survival of the Fittest, Squee, Goblin Nabob, or Genesis can support the discard pressure. It is bad when artifact removal is likely, when the opponent ignores creature combat, or when maintaining it would consume the resources needed for Survival of the Fittest chains.

  • Role card: Naturalize is the broad answer to artifacts and enchantments that beat the creature engine. Bring it when the opponent presents prison pieces, graveyard hate permanents, artifact mana engines, enchantments that stop combat, or permanents that make Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Winter Orb, or Tradewind Rider unreliable. It is bad when the opponent has only incidental artifacts or enchantments and the matchup is decided by creatures, burn, or stack interaction.

  • Role card: Tormod's Crypt is graveyard interaction that should be treated as a held answer, not as a tempo play. Bring it against graveyard combo, recursive threats, flashback-like plans, threshold-style payoffs, or graveyard engines that outscale Genesis. It is bad when the opponent's graveyard does not change legal lines, when the matchup is a pure race, or when using it early only removes low-impact cards.

  • Role card: Xantid Swarm is a proactive protection creature for forcing Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, or a decisive creature through blue or instant-speed interaction. Bring it when a protected main phase matters and the opponent can answer important spells on the stack. It is bad against removal-heavy creature decks, red decks with cheap removal, boards where attacking is unsafe, or matchups where the problem is already on the battlefield.

Red Burn Or Red Creature Pressure Side in: 2 Blue Elemental Blast; 2 Chill; 1 Hydroblast Cut: 1 Genesis; 1 Nantuko Vigilante; 1 Verdant Force; 1 Winter Orb; 1 Natural Order

  • Plan rule: preserve life total and mana creatures first, then assemble Survival of the Fittest or Opposition once Chill or blast coverage slows the opponent. Blue Elemental Blast and Hydroblast should protect the stabilizing creature or stop lethal damage rather than fight low-impact early spells automatically. Natural Order becomes less attractive when sacrificing a creature exposes life total to burn, so the plan keeps enough payoff access while lowering clunky top-end exposure.

Blue Control Or Stack-Interaction Combo Side in: 2 Xantid Swarm; 2 Blue Elemental Blast; 1 Hydroblast Cut: 1 Ravenous Baloth; 1 Phantom Nishoba; 1 Wall of Blossoms; 1 Winter Orb; 1 Natural Order

  • Plan rule: force the first decisive permanent or tutor through rather than trading resources one for one. Xantid Swarm should be deployed before the key turn when possible, then used to clear the main phase for Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, or Natural Order. Blue Elemental Blast and Hydroblast stay only if the opponent has meaningful red cards; if the opponent is not red, use the same shell but Add role cards: Xantid Swarm and Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow creature lifegain and excess top-end.

Artifact Or Enchantment Prison Side in: 4 Naturalize Cut: 1 Ravenous Baloth; 1 Phantom Nishoba; 1 Deranged Hermit; 1 Natural Order

  • Plan rule: answer the permanent that prevents the engine from functioning, not the first legal target. Naturalize should be held for artifact or enchantment hate that stops Survival of the Fittest, locks creatures, denies mana, or makes Opposition/Winter Orb ineffective. Nantuko Vigilante gains value as a redundant tutorable answer, so avoid reducing its importance in these matchups unless the rules engine shows no meaningful artifact or enchantment targets.

Graveyard Combo Or Graveyard Engine Side in: 2 Tormod's Crypt; 2 Naturalize Cut: 1 Squee, Goblin Nabob; 1 Genesis; 1 Verdant Force; 1 Winter Orb

  • Plan rule: accept a lower graveyard-engine ceiling to stop the opponent's graveyard from deciding the game first. Tormod's Crypt should wait for the visible graveyard action that matters, especially a recursion, reanimation, threshold-style, or flashback-like window. Naturalize is included only when the opponent's graveyard plan uses artifact or enchantment support; if no such permanent appears across games, Add role cards: Tormod's Crypt and Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow graveyard recursion.

Large-Creature Midrange Or Reanimation-Style Threats Side in: 1 Gilded Drake; 2 Tormod's Crypt; 1 Naturalize Cut: 1 Basking Rootwalla; 1 Nantuko Vigilante; 1 Winter Orb; 1 Deranged Hermit

  • Plan rule: break the opponent's single-threat plan while keeping enough creature count for Opposition and Gaea's Cradle. Gilded Drake is strongest when the stolen creature immediately stabilizes combat or reverses pressure; do not expose it into a board where the opponent can ignore the exchange. Tormod's Crypt covers graveyard-based access to the same threat class, while Naturalize covers visible artifact or enchantment support.

Creature Swarm Or Attrition Midrange Side in: 1 Masticore; 1 Gilded Drake; 2 Naturalize Cut: 1 Basking Rootwalla; 1 Winter Orb; 1 Verdant Force; 1 Natural Order

  • Plan rule: stabilize the battlefield before trying to lock the game. Masticore is a conditional role upgrade when discard support exists; if the hand cannot sustain it, prioritize Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Opposition, and Tradewind Rider lines instead. Gilded Drake is for a single creature that matters more than the body given away, while Naturalize covers equipment-like, prison-like, or enchantment-based creature enhancers only when visible.

  • Role-change rule: Winter Orb is strongest when this deck has mana creatures, Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, or Tradewind Rider leverage and the opponent relies on lands. Reduce main-deck emphasis on Winter Orb against cheap red decks, creature swarms that operate on low mana, or artifact/enchantment prison decks where answering the lock matters more than adding another constraint.

  • Role-change rule: Natural Order is strongest when a single payoff changes the visible board immediately. Reduce main-deck emphasis on Natural Order when removal, counterplay, or sacrifice risk makes the setup fragile; keep it when Phantom Nishoba, Verdant Force, Deranged Hermit, or Ravenous Baloth is the cleanest stabilizer.

  • Role-change rule: Genesis and Squee, Goblin Nabob are powerful in long games but become liabilities under graveyard pressure or fast clocks. Against graveyard hate or pure speed, the deck should lean more on castable creatures, Survival of the Fittest selection, and sideboard interaction rather than assuming recursive value will be available.

  • Runtime rule: exact plans are starting configurations, not permission to ignore visible information. If the opponent's revealed cards contradict the expected archetype, prefer Add role cards and Reduce main-deck emphasis guidance over forcing a listed plan.

Matchup Guidance

  • Aggro: stabilize with Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, and Quirion Ranger before trying to spend a full turn on a slow engine. Survival of the Fittest should find the creature that changes the visible board first, not the fanciest chain; Ravenous Baloth, Phantom Nishoba, Deranged Hermit, and Tradewind Rider are the main stabilizing endpoints depending on mana and board texture. Add role cards: Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Chill, Masticore when the opponent is red or creature-dense. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Genesis, Verdant Force, excess Winter Orb, and fragile Natural Order lines when life total is already under pressure.

  • Burn: preserve life total over engine greed, because Survival of the Fittest activations and Natural Order setups do not matter if the opponent can finish with visible direct damage. Chill is a high-impact role card when legal and should be deployed before lower-impact development if it materially changes the opponent's mana math. Blue Elemental Blast and Hydroblast should be saved for lethal or swingy red spells, a removal spell aimed at the only stabilizing creature, or a stack fight over Chill, not spent automatically on the first legal target. Ravenous Baloth and Phantom Nishoba are premium stabilizers, but Natural Order for them must account for visible sacrifice cost, open mana, and whether the sacrificed creature was needed for blocking.

  • Go-wide creature decks: prioritize Opposition, Deranged Hermit, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, and Gaea's Cradle lines that convert creature count into board control. Opposition is often stronger than racing when the opponent needs multiple creatures to attack profitably; tap attackers before combat, tap key blockers before attacks, or tap lands during upkeep only when that line is supported by the current board. Masticore is a role card when the hand and Squee, Goblin Nabob or Genesis can support the upkeep; without discard fuel, treat it as conditional removal rather than a guaranteed engine. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Winter Orb when the opponent can function on cheap creatures and when this deck lacks mana-creature leverage.

  • Single-threat decks: answer or steal the one permanent that matters instead of diluting resources across small threats. Gilded Drake is strongest when the opponent's visible creature is larger than the donated body, immediately stabilizes combat, or represents the opponent's core plan. Tradewind Rider plus expendable creatures can turn a single threat into a recurring tempo liability if the board supports enough untapped creatures. Survival of the Fittest should search for Gilded Drake after sideboarding, Nantuko Vigilante only for visible artifact or enchantment support, or Phantom Nishoba/Ravenous Baloth when the legal path is to outsize the threat rather than exchange for it.

  • Control: lead with resilient pressure and mana that can force repeated must-answer permanents. Survival of the Fittest is the best long-game engine when it resolves, because Squee, Goblin Nabob and Genesis turn creature cards into recurring decisions, but do not expose the entire turn to a known counterspell if Xantid Swarm or redundant threats can change the exchange. Winter Orb is strong when this deck already has Birds of Paradise, Wall of Roots, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Quirion Ranger, Gaea's Cradle, or Opposition leverage; it is weak when it strands this deck's own follow-up. Add role cards: Xantid Swarm against stack interaction, Blue Elemental Blast and Hydroblast only when red spells matter, Naturalize when the control deck's lock piece is artifact or enchantment based.

  • Tempo: protect mana development and avoid falling behind to cheap interaction plus pressure. Wall of Roots and Wall of Blossoms are better than speculative Survival of the Fittest activations when the opponent can punish a slow turn. Quirion Ranger can protect mana sequencing, reuse a land drop pattern, or support Tradewind Rider and Opposition, but only when returning a Forest does not make the next legal spell impossible. Xantid Swarm is useful against tempo decks only when it can attack safely and force through the decisive spell; otherwise, it may trade down into removal. Reduce main-deck emphasis: expensive Natural Order payoffs when the opponent's visible plan is to disrupt mana and win before top-end matters.

  • Combo: identify whether the opponent is faster than the Survival of the Fittest engine and choose between disruption, lock, or race. Winter Orb and Opposition are the main proactive disruption tools when the combo relies on lands, while Tormod's Crypt is the cleanest role card when the combo uses the graveyard. Xantid Swarm belongs in games where the combo fight is decided on the stack or when forcing Natural Order, Survival of the Fittest, or Opposition through interaction matters. Do not assume Nantuko Vigilante or Naturalize is relevant unless the rules engine shows artifact or enchantment pieces; when it does, hold Naturalize for the permanent that enables the combo rather than a replaceable setup card.

  • Graveyard decks: use Tormod's Crypt at the first visible graveyard window that would materially advance the opponent's plan, not merely because cards are present. Survival of the Fittest can rely less on Genesis and Squee, Goblin Nabob when opposing graveyard hate or speed makes the graveyard unreliable. Naturalize is a role card only when the opponent's graveyard plan uses a visible artifact or enchantment, such as a lock, engine, or enabler; otherwise preserve deck space and decisions for board development and Tormod's Crypt timing. If both players are using the graveyard, prioritize stopping the opponent's decisive recursion over protecting incremental Genesis value.

  • Artifact and enchantment decks: preserve Naturalize and Nantuko Vigilante for permanents that stop Survival of the Fittest, invalidate Opposition, disable creature mana, or lock combat. Nantuko Vigilante is valuable because Survival of the Fittest can find it, but Card text check required before assuming morph or timing details in a specific legal action. Naturalize should not be spent on a low-impact permanent if the opponent's deck is likely to present a more important artifact or enchantment and the current board is stable. Winter Orb can be poor into prison mirrors unless this deck already has mana creatures and the opponent is more land-dependent.

  • Midrange: become the better engine deck, not the smaller creature deck. Survival of the Fittest should convert spare creatures into the card that answers the current board: Ravenous Baloth against damage races, Deranged Hermit for bodies, Tradewind Rider for repeatable tempo, Genesis for attrition, and Nantuko Vigilante for visible artifacts or enchantments. Opposition becomes decisive when both sides have creatures but this deck has more expendable bodies. Masticore and Gilded Drake are role cards for creature boards where either repeatable damage or a single exchange changes combat. Avoid Natural Order into obvious removal if the sacrificed creature was needed to maintain creature count for Opposition or Gaea's Cradle.

  • Big mana: constrain mana before the opponent's expensive cards dominate the board. Winter Orb is strongest here when this deck has mana creatures, Gaea's Cradle, Wall of Roots, or Quirion Ranger to keep operating while the opponent is limited by lands. Opposition can function as a soft mana lock if enough creatures are available to tap lands on upkeep or tap payoff creatures before combat. Survival of the Fittest should find Tradewind Rider when repeated bounce is realistic, or Natural Order payoffs when a fast clock is required. Naturalize matters only against visible artifact or enchantment acceleration, prison, or payoff pieces.

  • Removal-heavy decks: diversify threats and avoid converting one removal spell into a two-for-one against Natural Order. Survival of the Fittest plus Squee, Goblin Nabob or Genesis is the preferred attrition plan if graveyards are safe. Sylvan Safekeeper is a protection piece when the legal action text supports protecting a decisive creature, but do not sacrifice lands casually if the current hand needs mana to rebuild. Xantid Swarm protects spells from stack interaction, not battlefield removal after resolution, so use it only when the opponent's disruption profile makes that relevant. Reduce main-deck emphasis: fragile all-in creature commitments when the visible board and public history show repeated removal.

  • Runtime override: let visible information beat archetype labels. If the opponent shows red damage, use burn rules even if the label says tempo; if the opponent shows graveyard recursion, use graveyard rules even if the label says midrange; if the opponent shows artifact or enchantment lock pieces, elevate Naturalize and Nantuko Vigilante decisions immediately. Legal actions from the rules engine define what can be chosen, and this guide should only rank the available choices rather than invent missing lines.

Specific Matchup Notes

  • General/archetype-only note: no exact opponent decklists are supplied for this batch, so revealed cards and rules-engine actions override these assumptions. Treat the opponent's first public cards as the live matchup label: red damage elevates Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Chill; visible graveyard dependency elevates Tormod's Crypt; artifact or enchantment engines elevate Naturalize and Nantuko Vigilante; stack interaction elevates Xantid Swarm.

  • Red aggressive or burn decks: stabilize life total before maximizing Survival of the Fittest value. Ravenous Baloth, Wall of Roots, Wall of Blossoms, and Phantom Nishoba are priority stabilizers when legal and visible pressure is high; Opposition is strong only after enough bodies exist to reduce attacks or mana. Add role cards: Blue Elemental Blast; Hydroblast; Chill. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow Winter Orb lines that do not affect the current damage race, and expensive Natural Order lines when sacrificing the only stabilizing creature exposes lethal pressure.

  • Blue control or permission decks: force the engine through only when the payoff justifies exposing a key spell. Survival of the Fittest is the best long-game threat if it resolves, while Squee, Goblin Nabob and Genesis convert later creatures into attrition decisions when graveyards are safe. Add role cards: Xantid Swarm. Reduce main-deck emphasis: low-impact creature deployment into visible sweepers or removal if holding creatures preserves Survival of the Fittest reloads.

  • Creature midrange decks: build a board that makes Opposition, Gaea's Cradle, and Tradewind Rider better than one-for-one combat. Deranged Hermit and Verdant Force are closer choices when the opponent cannot immediately punish a wide battlefield; Ravenous Baloth is preferred when life pressure matters; Gilded Drake and Masticore are likely role cards when a single creature or repeatable damage changes combat. Add role cards: Gilded Drake; Masticore. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Winter Orb when both players are creature-heavy and the opponent is not relying on lands to break parity.

  • Artifact or enchantment decks: hold answers for the permanent that blocks the engine or enables the opponent's engine. Naturalize is the clean sideboard role card, while Nantuko Vigilante is the searchable main-deck answer if Survival of the Fittest can find it and the legal action supports the timing. Add role cards: Naturalize. Reduce main-deck emphasis: blind Natural Order racing if a visible artifact or enchantment will invalidate the payoff.

  • Graveyard decks: use Tormod's Crypt for a decisive public graveyard moment, not for cosmetic cleanup. Survival of the Fittest can still function without leaning fully on Genesis or Squee, Goblin Nabob if opposing graveyard pressure or graveyard hate makes recursion unreliable. Add role cards: Tormod's Crypt. Reduce main-deck emphasis: graveyard-dependent loops when the opponent can punish the delay or interact with the graveyard.

Risk Summary

  • Mana risk: the deck has powerful but uneven mana, so early hands without Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, or functional lands can fail before the engine matters. Gaea's Cradle is explosive with creatures but weak as an early standalone land, and City of Brass or Yavimaya Coast can matter in damage races.

  • Matchup risk: fast decks can punish slow Survival of the Fittest activation turns before Ravenous Baloth, Wall of Roots, Opposition, or Natural Order stabilizes. Big mana and control decks can punish underdeveloped boards if Winter Orb or Opposition arrives without enough creature support.

  • Draw risk: creature-light draws weaken Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, Gaea's Cradle, and Tradewind Rider at the same time. Hands with several engines but too few bodies should be treated cautiously, especially on the draw.

  • Over-sideboarding risk: adding too many narrow sideboard cards can lower creature count and make the core engines worse. Preserve enough creatures for Survival of the Fittest chains, Natural Order sacrifice costs, Opposition tapping, and Gaea's Cradle mana.

  • Graveyard risk: Genesis and Squee, Goblin Nabob are strong only when the graveyard is not being attacked or raced. If Tormod's Crypt or other visible graveyard pressure is present, prioritize board-affecting creatures and do not spend turns setting up recursion that may disappear.

  • Sweeper/removal risk: Natural Order can become a major liability if the sacrificed creature was essential to mana, Opposition, or survival and the payoff is answered. Sylvan Safekeeper can protect a decisive creature only when the legal action exists and land sacrifice does not strand the hand.

  • Closer risk: Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Deranged Hermit, and Tradewind Rider win different games, and choosing the wrong closer can lose tempo. Pick the closer that answers the visible problem: life race, board width, repeated bounce, or raw inevitability.

  • Interaction risk: Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Naturalize, Tormod's Crypt, and Xantid Swarm are narrow if the revealed opponent plan does not match them. Do not preserve a narrow answer forever when the current legal play advances a winning board and no matching threat is visible.

  • Sequencing risk: Winter Orb, Opposition, Quirion Ranger, and Gaea's Cradle reward exact ordering. Avoid locking your own mana, returning the wrong Forest, tapping creatures needed for mana or blocking, or activating Survival of the Fittest before confirming that the remaining mana and creature count support the chosen line.

Test Feedback Checklist

  • Deciding factor: after each game, identify whether the result was driven by early mana, resolved Survival of the Fittest, resolved Opposition, Winter Orb pressure, Natural Order payoff, combat stabilization, sideboard card impact, or opponent speed. Record the first turn where the winning plan became visible from public information.

  • Mulligans: review every keep that lacked Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wall of Roots, or a functional two-land start. Ask whether the hand actually cast its spells on time, whether Gaea's Cradle was a real mana source or a liability, and whether City of Brass or Yavimaya Coast damage changed a race.

  • Mana: check whether Quirion Ranger, Wall of Roots, Gaea's Cradle, and Winter Orb sequencing created extra mana or stranded spells. Flag any turn where a Forest bounce, creature tap, or Winter Orb commitment prevented casting Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Natural Order, or a stabilizing creature.

  • Velocity: count how often the deck spent turns adding bodies versus activating Survival of the Fittest. Ask whether Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Roots, and mana creatures produced enough material for Opposition, Tradewind Rider, and Gaea's Cradle before the opponents pressure mattered.

  • Engines: record whether Survival of the Fittest found Squee, Goblin Nabob, Genesis, Nantuko Vigilante, Ravenous Baloth, Deranged Hermit, Verdant Force, or Phantom Nishoba at the right moment. Note any game where the engine was active but the chosen creature did not answer the visible battlefield.

  • Removal and interaction: review whether Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Naturalize, Tormod's Crypt, Gilded Drake, Masticore, or Nantuko Vigilante had a visible target or sat stranded. Ask whether holding the answer preserved a decisive resource or merely delayed board development.

  • Sideboard: after each match, compare sideboard cards drawn with the opponents revealed plan. Ask whether Chill, Xantid Swarm, Naturalize, Tormod's Crypt, Gilded Drake, Masticore, Blue Elemental Blast, and Hydroblast matched the actual public threats and whether adding them weakened creature density too much.

  • Closing: identify which closer actually ended or stabilized the game: Deranged Hermit, Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, Tradewind Rider, Opposition lock, Winter Orb pressure, or Natural Order. Ask whether a different visible closer would have ended the game sooner or survived interaction better.

  • Role: mark whether the pilot correctly played control, engine midrange, prison, or race. Flag games where the deck tried to maximize Survival of the Fittest value while dying to pressure, or committed Winter Orb before having the creatures to break parity.

  • Mistakes: review every pass with unused mana, every Natural Order sacrifice, every Sylvan Safekeeper protection choice, every Opposition tap, and every Tradewind Rider activation. Ask whether the legal action chosen matched the visible clock, available blockers, and known public threats.

  • Stranded cards: list any cards stuck in hand for multiple turns, especially Opposition, Natural Order, Winter Orb, Verdant Force, Phantom Nishoba, and sideboard cards. Identify whether the failure was mana, missing creatures, wrong role, or opponent interaction.

  • Overperformers and underperformers: record card names with evidence, not impressions. Tie each note to visible board state, legal actions, matchup role, and whether the card changed a race, engine turn, lock turn, or closing turn.

First Tuning Questions

  • Card quantities: if Survival of the Fittest was absent too often, should the build stay at four copies and tune around protecting it, or were losses caused more by creature-light hands that failed to feed it? If Survival resolved but did not win, examine creature package choices before changing the engine count.

  • Mana base: if Gaea's Cradle was weak in openers, should the land mix favor more stable colored mana, or did poor creature sequencing make Gaea's Cradle look worse than it is? If City of Brass and Yavimaya Coast damage mattered often, ask whether the deck needs more stabilization or fewer painful starts.

  • Mana creatures: if Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, and Wall of Roots died before engines came online, ask whether the deck needs more low-cost bodies, different protection priorities, or more conservative mulligans. If they flooded without payoff, examine whether engine density is already correct.

  • Aggro plan: if red or creature decks consistently won before engines mattered, question whether Ravenous Baloth, Phantom Nishoba, Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Roots, Chill, Blue Elemental Blast, and Hydroblast are enough. Decide whether losses came from sideboard access, early sequencing, or insufficient life-gain bodies.

  • Control plan: if blue or removal-heavy decks answered Survival of the Fittest and Natural Order, ask whether Xantid Swarm, Squee, Goblin Nabob, Genesis, Winter Orb, and Tradewind Rider gave enough resilience. If not, identify whether the problem was threat timing, protection, or too few independent engines.

  • Closer package: if Verdant Force was too slow, Deranged Hermit too fragile, or Phantom Nishoba too narrow, review which visible boards each failed to solve. Do not change closers until logs show whether Natural Order targets lost to tempo, removal, blockers, or life-total pressure.

  • Sideboard slots: if Naturalize, Tormod's Crypt, Gilded Drake, Masticore, Chill, Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Xantid Swarm were frequently stranded, ask whether the metagame labels were wrong or the sideboard is too narrow. Preserve enough creature count for Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Natural Order, and Gaea's Cradle.

  • Role conflicts: if Winter Orb slowed the pilot more than the opponent, ask whether the deck should commit to Opposition/creature mana first or reduce reliance on prison lines in creature mirrors. If Natural Order sacrificed essential mana or blockers, ask whether the pilot needs stricter commitment gates rather than card changes.

  • Toolbox coverage: if Nantuko Vigilante, Ravenous Baloth, Genesis, Squee, Goblin Nabob, Sylvan Safekeeper, or Quirion Ranger was selected at the wrong time, tune the guide before tuning the list. The first fix may be better target ranking from visible state, not different card quantities.

Veles Tactical Policy

Policy: Keep Functional Engine Openers

Priority: High Decision families: mulligan Cards: Birds of Paradise; Fyndhorn Elves; Llanowar Elves; Wall of Roots; Survival of the Fittest; Yavimaya Coast; City of Brass; Forest; Island; Gaea's Cradle Phase windows: pregame mulligan Runtime cues: prompt:mulligan; opening hand visible Use when: deciding whether the opener can cast a mana creature or Wall of Roots and then reach Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Natural Order, or Tradewind Rider. Avoid when: the hand relies on Gaea's Cradle without creatures, lacks green mana, or cannot deploy a first body before turn two. Instructions: keep hands with green source plus early creature plus engine/payoff; mulligan creature-light hands even with powerful threes; count City of Brass and Yavimaya Coast damage against fast pressure. Policy: First Body Setup

Priority: Medium Decision families: mana; priority Cards: Birds of Paradise; Fyndhorn Elves; Llanowar Elves; Wall of Roots; Quirion Ranger; Gaea's Cradle Phase windows: main phases turns 1-3 Runtime cues: action:cast Birds of Paradise; action:cast Fyndhorn Elves; action:cast Llanowar Elves; action:cast Wall of Roots Use when: choosing the first permanent that turns on Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, Survival activations, or Natural Order fodder. Avoid when: casting the body leaves Survival of the Fittest or a required colored source unusable this turn. Instructions: prefer Birds of Paradise when blue or off-color mana matters; prefer Wall of Roots under creature pressure; preserve Quirion Ranger lines when a Forest can be replayed or untapped creature mana changes the turn. Policy: Survival Commitment Gate

Priority: High Decision families: priority; selection Cards: Survival of the Fittest; Squee, Goblin Nabob; Genesis; Basking Rootwalla; Nantuko Vigilante; Ravenous Baloth; Deranged Hermit; Phantom Nishoba; Verdant Force Phase windows: main phases and opponent end step Runtime cues: action:activate Survival of the Fittest; action:cast Survival of the Fittest Use when: deciding whether to spend mana, discard a creature, or expose the engine this turn. Avoid when: the visible board demands blockers, a lock piece, or immediate life stabilization more than a toolbox chain. Instructions: start with Squee, Goblin Nabob for repeat fuel when time allows; find Ravenous Baloth or Wall bodies under pressure; find Nantuko Vigilante or Natural Order targets only when the visible problem or closing window is concrete. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Basking Rootwalla Free Execution

Priority: Low Decision families: selection; priority Cards: Basking Rootwalla; Survival of the Fittest Phase windows: any Survival discard resolution where a madness-style cast is offered Runtime cues: action:cast Basking Rootwalla Use when: Basking Rootwalla is the only zero-mana creature-cast action offered after it was discarded and the stack is otherwise empty. Avoid when: another legal action with Basking Rootwalla offers a paid mode or requires spending mana needed for the selected line. Instructions: accept the exact cast action to add a creature for Gaea's Cradle, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, combat, or Natural Order material. Policy: Natural Order Commitment Gate

Priority: High Decision families: priority; selection; mana Cards: Natural Order; Verdant Force; Phantom Nishoba; Deranged Hermit; Ravenous Baloth; Wall of Roots; Birds of Paradise; Llanowar Elves; Fyndhorn Elves Phase windows: own main phase Runtime cues: action:cast Natural Order; prompt:choose creature to sacrifice; prompt:search library Use when: deciding whether sacrificing a green creature converts the current board into a win, stabilization, or lock-breaking threat. Avoid when: the sacrifice removes the only colored mana, only blocker, or only Opposition/Tradewind Rider enabler and the payoff does not answer the visible clock. Instructions: choose Verdant Force for long-board inevitability, Phantom Nishoba for racing and life pressure, Deranged Hermit for immediate body count, and Ravenous Baloth only when life or sacrifice utility is the visible need. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Opposition Lock Commitment

Priority: High Decision families: priority; mana; interaction Cards: Opposition; Winter Orb; Birds of Paradise; Fyndhorn Elves; Llanowar Elves; Wall of Roots; Deranged Hermit; Verdant Force Phase windows: own main phase, opponent upkeep, combat steps Runtime cues: action:cast Opposition; action:activate Opposition; action:cast Winter Orb Use when: deciding whether the creature count can tap opposing mana, attackers, or blockers while still advancing the board. Avoid when: Winter Orb or Opposition strands the pilots own lands without creature mana or fails to stop the opponents visible attack. Instructions: cast Opposition before Winter Orb when possible; tap opponent lands before their main phase if mana denial is the plan; tap attackers before combat or blockers before lethal only when the engine output is visible. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Exact Opposition Tap

Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction; combat; priority Cards: Opposition Phase windows: opponent upkeep, beginning of combat, declare blockers, end step Runtime cues: action:activate Opposition targeting Use when: exactly one Opposition activation is legal and the action text names the permanent already selected by a prior light-model policy. Avoid when: multiple target permanents are legal or the target identity has not been selected in the current decision context. Instructions: submit the matching target action only; do not infer a new tap target from board texture. Pilot skill floor: no-api No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes

Avoid when: the pilot needs multiple land untaps next turn to cast Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or sideboard interaction. Instructions: commit Winter Orb after building creature mana or Opposition pressure; delay it when it protects the opponents current board more than it limits their future mana. Avoid when: tapping creatures removes lethal pressure, necessary blockers, Opposition coverage, or Natural Order material without stopping a concrete threat. Instructions: use upkeep bounce for mana denial, combat bounce for attackers or blockers, and end-step bounce for slow permanents; choose tapped helper creatures when possible. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Quirion Ranger Resource Loop

Priority: Medium Decision families: mana; priority Cards: Quirion Ranger; Forest; Birds of Paradise; Fyndhorn Elves; Llanowar Elves; Gaea's Cradle; Wall of Roots Phase windows: own main phase, combat when untap action is legal Runtime cues: action:activate Quirion Ranger Use when: deciding whether returning Forest creates an extra creature activation, colored mana, blocker, or Opposition/Tradewind Rider tap. Avoid when: returning Forest prevents land development, removes the only green source for the next turn, or adds no same-turn resource. Instructions: use Quirion Ranger to reuse Birds of Paradise for color, untap a key creature after attacking, or rebuild under Winter Orb; verify the returned land is exactly Forest when rules output requires it. Avoid when: a broad attack sacrifices mana, Opposition taps, Tradewind Rider fuel, or Natural Order fodder for damage that does not change the race. Instructions: block aggressively with Wall of Blossoms and Wall of Roots against short clocks; preserve Birds of Paradise and mana elves when their mana unlocks a higher-impact next turn; attack with large closers when the visible crackback is covered. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Sacrifice And Protection Gate

Priority: High Decision families: interaction; combat; priority Cards: Sylvan Safekeeper; Ravenous Baloth; Deranged Hermit; Phantom Nishoba; Verdant Force; Tradewind Rider; Survival of the Fittest Phase windows: removal on stack, combat damage, lethal race turns Runtime cues: action:activate Sylvan Safekeeper; action:activate Ravenous Baloth Use when: deciding whether sacrificing a land or creature preserves a decisive engine, prevents lethal, or converts a dying creature into life. Avoid when: the sacrifice destroys the mana base or board material needed for the next selected line and the protected object is not central to the visible game. Instructions: protect Survival-enabled closers and active lock pieces before replaceable mana creatures; use Ravenous Baloth life gain when visible damage or combat math makes life total the bottleneck. Policy: Artifact And Enchantment Answer Targeting

Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction; selection Cards: Naturalize; Nantuko Vigilante; Survival of the Fittest Phase windows: opponent end step, own main phase, stack interaction when legal Runtime cues: action:cast Naturalize; action:target Naturalize; action:target Nantuko Vigilante Use when: selecting whether to answer a visible artifact or enchantment with Naturalize or Nantuko Vigilante. Avoid when: the target is low-impact and the mana or creature body is needed for engine development this turn. Instructions: prioritize permanents that stop Survival of the Fittest, Opposition, Natural Order, combat stabilization, or graveyard recursion; use Nantuko Vigilante when a creature body matters and timing is legal. Policy: Graveyard Hate Timing

Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Tormod's Crypt Phase windows: opponent graveyard-action windows, opponent end step, own main phase before lethal setup Runtime cues: action:activate Tormod's Crypt Use when: the opponents graveyard visibly enables the next spell, recursion, threshold, flashback, or combo step. Avoid when: activation only removes irrelevant cards and the opponent has not committed the graveyard-dependent action or public setup. Instructions: wait for maximum visible dependency unless immediate activation prevents a known legal line; do not treat hidden hand contents as proof. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Gilded Drake And Masticore Sideboard Deployment

Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction; priority; combat Cards: Gilded Drake; Masticore Phase windows: own main phase, combat stabilization turns Runtime cues: action:cast Gilded Drake; action:cast Masticore; prompt:target Gilded Drake Use when: Gilded Drake can exchange for a visible creature that dominates combat or Masticore can control small creatures while the hand supports its upkeep. Avoid when: Gilded Drake has no opposing creature worth exchanging by visible text, or Masticore upkeep would discard essential engine cards without stabilizing. Instructions: route Gilded Drake target choice through light-model; use Masticore when repeat damage and body size matter more than Survival discard resources. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Xantid Swarm Protection Gate

Priority: Medium Decision families: combat; interaction; priority Cards: Xantid Swarm; Natural Order; Survival of the Fittest; Opposition Phase windows: own combat before committing key spells, own main phase after attack trigger resolution Runtime cues: action:attack with Xantid Swarm; action:cast Xantid Swarm Use when: deciding whether attacking with Xantid Swarm opens a protected main phase for Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, or Winter Orb. Avoid when: attacking loses Xantid Swarm to visible blockers without enabling a same-turn protected commitment. Instructions: cast Xantid Swarm early against interaction-heavy opponents; attack before key main-phase commitments when the rules engine offers the attack and postcombat spell line. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Sideboard Plan Selection

Priority: High Decision families: sideboard Cards: Blue Elemental Blast; Chill; Gilded Drake; Hydroblast; Masticore; Naturalize; Tormod's Crypt; Xantid Swarm; Winter Orb; Natural Order; Opposition; Wall of Blossoms; Wall of Roots; Basking Rootwalla; Squee, Goblin Nabob Phase windows: between games Runtime cues: prompt:sideboard; match stage post-game Use when: choosing legal sideboard swaps after seeing public opponent archetype, revealed cards, and game result. Avoid when: a plan cuts too many creatures for Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Opposition, Tradewind Rider, or Gaea's Cradle to function. Instructions: add Blue Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Chill against red pressure; add Naturalize against artifact/enchantment engines; add Tormod's Crypt against graveyard reliance; add Xantid Swarm against permission; add Gilded Drake or Masticore against creature boards. Reduce slow or narrow main-deck emphasis without breaking mana and creature density. Pilot skill floor: light-model No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
