Deck Name And Archetype

Wraith | Voltron PDH is a Pauper Commander Azorius commander-damage deck built around Wraith, Vicious Vigilante as the primary threat, with control and tempo tags normalized from the supplied control, tempo, control, tempo metadata. The deck is best classified as a rogue Voltron-control hybrid rather than a stock archetype: it uses a dense package of auras, equipment, pump, evasion, protection, and permission to make one creature matter, but it must still play like a reactive tempo deck because Pauper Commander games punish unsupported all-in attacks.

  • Validation: The active format is Pauper Commander, the registered main deck contains exactly 100 cards, and the registered sideboard contains exactly 10 cards for Veles policy sideboarding. The main deck passes the provided singleton contract outside basic lands, with only Island and Plains appearing in multiples.

  • Commander: Wraith, Vicious Vigilante is the decks named command-zone plan and default carrier for Voltron resources. Runtime decisions should still respect legal actions and visible state; do not cast, equip, enchant, protect, or attack with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante merely because this guide says the deck is a Voltron deck.

  • Color and mana profile: The registered mana base is blue-white with 12 Island, 16 Plains, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, Skybridge Towers, University Campus, North Pole Gates, Abandoned Campground, Forge of Heroes, and Dig Site Inventory. The tactical concern is not total land count alone but color timing: early white enables Spirit Link, Hyena Umbra, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Sentinel's Eyes, Cartouche of Solidarity, and protection such as Karametra's Blessing or Blacksmith's Skill, while early blue enables Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Muddle the Mixture, Dizzy Spell, Drift of Phantasms, Sigil of Sleep, Ophidian Eye, Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Vanishing, and You Come to a River.

  • Role concerns: The deck wants to become the aggressor once a protected evasive attacker is established, but it should begin many games as control-tempo until it can pair a carrier with protection or permission. A hand with only enhancements such as Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Armory of Iroas, Goggles of Night, Greatsword of Tyr, Dúnedain Blade, Kor Halberd, Amorphous Axe, Darksteel Axe, Utility Knife, or Strider Harness needs a legal creature or commander access before it is functional.

  • Protection density: Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Muddle the Mixture, Blacksmith's Skill, Shore Up, Karametra's Blessing, Take Up the Shield, Adamant Will, Eel Umbra, Hyena Umbra, Benevolent Blessing, Vanishing, and Saiba Cryptomancer make the deck resilient when mana is left open. The pilot should treat tap-out Voltron commitment as a strategic gate, not an automatic curve play.

  • Opponent information status: No specific opponent deck, commander, metagame, or hidden information is supplied for this strategy batch. The guide must therefore operate from public information, engine-provided legal actions, visible battlefield texture, revealed cards, known commander identities at runtime, and logged decision context rather than assuming particular removal spells, blockers, sweepers, or combo clocks.

  • Sideboard status: The registered sideboard is exactly Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, Guided Strike, Acrobatic Leap, Flare of Faith, Rebellious Strike, Beaming Defiance, Moment of Triumph, and Bonds of Faith. These cards are legal policy-sideboard inputs only when Veles presents a sideboarding decision; they should not be treated as available maindeck actions during Game 1 or before a sideboard lock.

Thesis

Wraith | Voltron PDH assembles one protected, evasive damage carrier and turns that creature into a commander-damage or combat-damage clock while holding up blue-white tempo interaction. The default carrier is Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, but the deck can start pressure with Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast, Tandem Lookout, Saiba Cryptomancer, or Drift of Phantasms when legal actions and visible board texture make waiting for commander mana too slow.

Prioritize survivability before size when committing auras and equipment. A large Wraith, Vicious Vigilante with no protection is worse than a smaller carrier backed by Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Muddle the Mixture, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Take Up the Shield, Eel Umbra, Hyena Umbra, Benevolent Blessing, Vanishing, or Saiba Cryptomancer. Treat every tap-out enhancement turn as a commitment gate if the opponent has open mana, visible removal pressure, or a faster clock.

Win by stacking efficient combat modifiers and evasion on one creature, then convert each attack into either lethal pressure, life-buffering, cards, treasure, tempo, or combat snowballing. Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Spirit Link, Sigil of Sleep, Ophidian Eye, Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Sentinel's Eyes, Cartouche of Solidarity, Mammoth Umbra, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Armory of Iroas, Greatsword of Tyr, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, and Goggles of Night are not interchangeable; choose the piece that solves the current barrier: damage race, blocking, removal exposure, mana development, or card flow.

Do not play this deck as a generic Azorius control deck that trades one-for-one forever. The permission suite is primarily a shield for a Voltron clock, not a plan to exhaust every opposing resource. Do not play it as pure aggro either; unsupported attacks into larger boards or tapped-out aura piles invite losing both tempo and commander tax.

Role Package

  • Threats: Wraith, Vicious Vigilante is the primary Voltron threat and commander-tax resource sink; Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast, Tandem Lookout, Saiba Cryptomancer, and Drift of Phantasms are alternate carriers or bodies when commander timing is constrained. Use noncommander carriers when they let the deck develop protection, bait interaction, or keep commander recasts affordable.

  • Payoffs: Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Greatsword of Tyr, Armory of Iroas, Mammoth Umbra, Dúnedain Blade, Kor Halberd, Amorphous Axe, Darksteel Axe, Bonesplitter, Bone Saw, Utility Knife, Adventuring Gear, Strider Harness, Lightwheel Enhancements, and Cartouche of Solidarity supply size or combat conversion. Card text check required for Lightwheel Enhancements before assigning it a precise pump, protection, or utility role.

  • Evasion and connection engines: Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Steel of the Godhead, Sigil of Sleep, Goggles of Night, Prying Blade, Goldvein Pick, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, and Hidden Strings reward connecting or help force damage through. Prefer evasion before extra power when blockers can absorb commander damage indefinitely.

  • Velocity and selection: Dizzy Spell, Muddle the Mixture, Drift of Phantasms, Defiant Strike, Crumb and Get It, Last Thoughts, Hidden Strings, Cartouche of Knowledge, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Dig Site Inventory, University Campus, Skybridge Towers, and Path of Ancestry help find action or convert attacks into more resources. Card text check required for Crumb and Get It and Dig Site Inventory before relying on exact card-flow or combat-mode assumptions.

  • Interaction: Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Muddle the Mixture, Dizzy Spell, You Come to a River, Magic Damper, Chains of Custody, Sigil of Sleep, and Battlefield Improvisation are the main ways to stop opposing plans or reset tempo. Card text check required for Magic Damper and Battlefield Improvisation before treating them as a specific counter, tax, or combat trick.

  • Protection: Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Take Up the Shield, Adamant Will, Eel Umbra, Hyena Umbra, Mammoth Umbra, Benevolent Blessing, Vanishing, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Intervene, Keep Safe, Beaming Defiance, Flare of Faith, and Moment of Triumph preserve the carrier through removal or combat. Protection mana is often more valuable than one additional enhancement once the clock is already meaningful.

  • Recursion and resilience: Recommission, Sentinel's Eyes, Mammoth Umbra, Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Vanishing, and command-zone access let the deck rebuild after removal. Use recursion to restore a protected threat plan, not to spend a turn returning a low-impact body while the opponent's board is advancing unchecked.

  • Mana and infrastructure: Island, Plains, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, North Pole Gates, Skybridge Towers, University Campus, Abandoned Campground, Forge of Heroes, Dig Site Inventory, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, and Hidden Strings support color timing and repeated equip/protection turns. Prioritize early white for auras and protection, early blue for permission and evasion, and untapped mana when holding a shield is tactically required.

  • Sideboard modules: Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, Beaming Defiance, Flare of Faith, Moment of Triumph, Guided Strike, Acrobatic Leap, Rebellious Strike, and Bonds of Faith shift the deck toward narrower protection, combat leverage, or creature management after public matchup information is available. Sideboard cards are unavailable in Game 1 unless Veles has already locked a legal sideboard plan.

Primary Win Conditions

  • Voltron commander clock: Build Wraith, Vicious Vigilante into the main damage carrier when mana, protection, and legal enhancement actions line up. Setup requires stable white-blue mana, Wraith, Vicious Vigilante on board or castable from the command zone, and at least one shield or resilience piece such as Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Mammoth Umbra, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Take Up the Shield, Benevolent Blessing, Vanishing, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, or Counterspell. Execute by adding evasion or damage first when blockers matter: Steel of the Godhead, Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Greatsword of Tyr, Armory of Iroas, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, Dúnedain Blade, Kor Halberd, Amorphous Axe, or Adventuring Gear. Prioritize this line when the opponent cannot profitably race, Wraith can attack soon, and the deck can keep at least one answer available after the key commitment.

  • Protected evasive two-turn clock: Choose the highest-pressure aura/equipment stack when the opponent's visible board cannot block flying, unblockable, protected, or otherwise evasive combat. Setup the carrier with Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Steel of the Godhead, or Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae before piling on Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Greatsword of Tyr, Armory of Iroas, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, or Mammoth Umbra. Execute only after checking open mana, known removal, sacrifice effects, bounce, and combat tricks; if disruption is likely, hold up Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Muddle the Mixture, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, or Vanishing instead of adding a redundant pump. Prioritize this line against slower boards, tapped-out opponents, or races where lifegain from Spirit Link or Steel of the Godhead changes the damage math.

  • Early alternate-carrier pressure: Start with Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast, Tandem Lookout, Saiba Cryptomancer, or Drift of Phantasms when waiting for Wraith, Vicious Vigilante gives the opponent too much time. Setup by deploying one cheap body, then attach low-risk enhancements such as Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Utility Knife, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Sentinel's Eyes, Cartouche of Solidarity, Cartouche of Knowledge, or Spectral Flight. Execute as tempo pressure that either deals meaningful damage, baits removal before Wraith, or carries connection engines. Prioritize this line when commander tax is high, the opening hand has bodies plus equipment but no clean Wraith window, or the opponent is stumbling on board.

  • Connection-resource snowball: Win by repeatedly connecting while Sigil of Sleep, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Goggles of Night, Hidden Strings, or Steel of the Godhead converts attacks into cards, mana, bounce pressure, untaps, or life buffer. Card text check required for Goggles of Night before relying on its exact reward. Setup requires evasion or a safely attacking carrier; execution requires protecting the first successful connection more than maximizing raw power. Prioritize this line when the opponent has removal-heavy answers but weak pressure, because extra cards and treasure-equivalent resources help rebuild through one-for-one trades.

Secondary Win Conditions

  • Equipment rebuild plan: Shift to durable equipment pressure after aura blowouts, commander tax, or repeated removal. Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, Bone Saw, Utility Knife, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Greatsword of Tyr, Armory of Iroas, Dúnedain Blade, Kor Halberd, Amorphous Axe, Strider Harness, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, and Adventuring Gear keep value on board when the creature dies. Use any legal body as the next carrier, then recast Wraith, Vicious Vigilante only when protection or mana makes the recast meaningful.

  • Recursion and graveyard recovery: Use Recommission and Sentinel's Eyes to reassemble pressure after the first carrier dies. Recommission should recover a creature or setup piece only when the returned permanent immediately blocks, carries equipment, restores connection pressure, or lets Wraith's recast wait. Sentinel's Eyes is a long-game pressure tool when legal escape or recursion action is available; do not spend graveyard resources if the visible board requires mana for protection, blockers, or interaction first.

  • Tempo-lock fallback: Use Sigil of Sleep, Chains of Custody, You Come to a River, Magic Damper, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Muddle the Mixture, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, and Battlefield Improvisation to prevent the opponent's key turn from stabilizing. Card text check required for Magic Damper and Battlefield Improvisation before assigning exact counter, tax, or combat-trick use. This is not a permanent control plan; convert the delay into attacks, card draw, or a protected Wraith turn.

Emergency Lines

  • Behind on life: Stop racing blindly and make lifegain or prevention the next stabilizing layer. Prioritize Spirit Link, Steel of the Godhead, Take Up the Shield, Moment of Triumph if sideboarded, Flare of Faith if sideboarded, or a protected blocker over extra pump that does not change the opponent's next attack. If legal combat choices show lethal incoming pressure, preserve life before committing new auras.

  • Behind on board: Trade tempo for survival until one carrier can attack safely. Use Chains of Custody, Sigil of Sleep, You Come to a River, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Muddle the Mixture, or visible combat tricks to stop the largest threat, then develop evasion only after the crack-back is survivable. Do not attack with the only relevant blocker unless damage output is lethal or lifegain visibly wins the race.

  • Behind on cards: Turn a safe connection into velocity. Prefer Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, Cartouche of Knowledge, Defiant Strike, Crumb and Get It, Dig Site Inventory, University Campus, or Skybridge Towers when the board is stable enough to spend mana on flow. Card text check required for Crumb and Get It and Dig Site Inventory before relying on exact draw or selection behavior.

  • Behind on mana: Lower the curve of decisions and protect land drops. Prefer Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, North Pole Gates, Skybridge Towers, University Campus, Abandoned Campground, Island, and Plains sequencing that leaves the required colors for protection. Use Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, and Hidden Strings as mana recovery only when the attack is safe enough to connect or untap value.

  • Engine removed or Wraith unavailable: Rebuild with the cheapest legal carrier plus equipment before risking more auras. If Wraith, Vicious Vigilante is too expensive or repeatedly answered, move enhancements onto Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Tandem Lookout, Saiba Cryptomancer, Drift of Phantasms, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, or Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast until command-zone pressure becomes affordable again.

Resource Model

  • Life is a race resource only after a protected carrier is established. Spend early life to preserve mana and cards when Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or an evasive backup can repay it with Spirit Link, Steel of the Godhead, Take Up the Shield, or sideboard lifegain from Moment of Triumph and Flare of Faith; when behind, treat life as the resource that buys one more protected attack or one more draw step.

  • Hand size is the deck's resilience buffer. Do not convert every aura and equipment into board presence just because mana is available; keep one protection spell, counterspell, bounce spell, or rebuild piece when the visible opponent can answer a single large creature. Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, Cartouche of Knowledge, Defiant Strike, University Campus, Skybridge Towers, and Dig Site Inventory should be used to refresh the hand only when the carrier or board state can survive the tempo cost. Card text check required for Dig Site Inventory before relying on exact selection behavior.

  • Mana is both development and shield. The deck wants to deploy Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or an alternate carrier, attach one meaningful enhancement, then keep mana for Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Muddle the Mixture, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Vanishing, or You Come to a River. A turn that adds less damage but preserves protection is often stronger than a tap-out turn that loses the only carrier.

  • Board material is concentrated in one attacker, so every extra permanent must justify exposure. Auras such as Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Sigil of Sleep, Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, and Mammoth Umbra increase ceiling but increase blowout risk; equipment such as Bonesplitter, Bone Saw, Darksteel Axe, Utility Knife, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Greatsword of Tyr, Armory of Iroas, Dúnedain Blade, Kor Halberd, Amorphous Axe, Goldvein Pick, and Prying Blade preserve rebuild equity.

  • Graveyard value is limited but important. Recommission should restore a creature or cheap permanent only when it immediately blocks, carries equipment, restarts connection pressure, or avoids an inefficient commander-tax recast. Sentinel's Eyes should be treated as repeatable pressure only after checking whether graveyard cards or mana are needed for survival and whether the escaped aura exposes the next carrier to a known answer.

  • Exile and adventure-style temporary zones must be tracked by visible legality. Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae and Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast can create split-card or adventure sequencing decisions; use only actions the engine exposes, and do not assume the creature half, adventure half, or exile-cast window is legal unless it appears in the current legal actions.

  • Lands are a color and timing resource, not just count. Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, North Pole Gates, Skybridge Towers, University Campus, Abandoned Campground, Forge of Heroes, Island, and Plains should be sequenced to leave white for protection and auras or blue for interaction depending on the opponent's visible turn.

  • Sacrifice fodder is scarce, so do not treat creatures as disposable. Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Tandem Lookout, Saiba Cryptomancer, Drift of Phantasms, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, and Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast are alternate carriers, blockers, or connection engines before they are expendable material.

  • Tempo is gained by forcing awkward answers and protected attacks. Sigil of Sleep, Chains of Custody, You Come to a River, Magic Damper, Spell Pierce, Counterspell, Muddle the Mixture, and evasive auras should buy attack steps, not merely delay the game. Card text check required for Magic Damper before relying on exact tax or counter behavior.

  • Information should change commitment size. Commit more when the opponent is tapped low, has revealed no answer, or lacks relevant blockers; commit less when open mana, known removal, sacrifice effects, bounce, or combat tricks make a single large carrier fragile.

  • Sideboard bullets convert narrow roles into higher-impact protection, combat, and creature control. Add role cards: Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, Beaming Defiance, Guided Strike, Acrobatic Leap, Flare of Faith, Rebellious Strike, Moment of Triumph, or Bonds of Faith only when their role matches the opponent's visible pressure or interaction profile.

Mana Guide

  • Keep hands that produce both white and blue by the time the first protected carrier matters. A strong opener usually has two or three lands, at least one white source for Wraith, Vicious Vigilante and auras or protection, at least one blue source for Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Muddle the Mixture, Cartouche of Knowledge, Ophidian Eye, or Sigil of Sleep, and a cheap action before turn three.

  • Mulligan hands that cannot cast early white spells or early blue interaction in sequence. One-color hands are risky unless the legal opener already contains an early carrier, a clear enhancement path, and draw or selection that can find the missing color; colorless-equipment hands without a creature should be treated as nonfunctional.

  • Prioritize untapped color access before utility. Island and Plains enable holding up one-mana protection and interaction; Command Tower is the cleanest dual source; Razortide Bridge, North Pole Gates, Skybridge Towers, University Campus, Abandoned Campground, and Path of Ancestry may enter tapped or have timing constraints, so sequence them on turns where passing with protection is not essential. Card text check required for Abandoned Campground and North Pole Gates before relying on exact entry or activation behavior.

  • Use Forge of Heroes only when the commander plan benefits from its exact legal text. Card text check required before relying on counters or commander-specific mana; if the current legal action does not show the relevant ability, treat it as a land with uncertain utility rather than a guaranteed pump source.

  • Play lands before casting spells when the turn requires protection mana. If the chosen line is Wraith, Vicious Vigilante plus Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Turn Aside, Shore Up, or Spell Pierce, make the land drop first when it unlocks the required color or total mana.

  • Delay the land drop before draw or selection only when the drawn card can materially change the land choice. Cartouche of Knowledge, Defiant Strike, Crumb and Get It, University Campus, Skybridge Towers, and Dig Site Inventory can justify waiting if the hand contains multiple land options or if the decision is between untapped interaction and tapped utility; Card text check required for Crumb and Get It and Dig Site Inventory before relying on exact draw timing.

  • Sequence tapped lands on low-risk setup turns. If the opponent cannot present a meaningful stack or combat punish this turn, develop Razortide Bridge, Skybridge Towers, University Campus, Path of Ancestry, North Pole Gates, or Abandoned Campground before committing a carrier. If the opponent is representing removal or a decisive attack, prefer untapped Island or Plains to preserve action.

  • Preserve blue mana when the opponent's next spell matters more than the next aura. Counterspell and Muddle the Mixture require heavier blue commitment than Spell Pierce or Turn Aside, so avoid spending the only blue source on Cartouche of Knowledge, Ophidian Eye, Hidden Strings, or You Come to a River when the visible stack window is the real fight.

  • Preserve white mana when the carrier must survive combat or removal. Karametra's Blessing, Blacksmith's Skill, Take Up the Shield, Adamant Will, Arrester's Zeal, Archon's Glory, and sideboard protection or pump require white sequencing discipline; do not spend the last white on extra development if legal opponent actions or visible combat make protection likely.

  • Treat Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Hidden Strings, and connection rewards as conditional mana recovery. Use them to accelerate only when the carrier can attack safely or connect; do not count their mana toward precombat protection unless the engine already exposes the generated resource as available.

Mulligan Guide

  • Strong keep: Keep two or three lands with both colors, Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or an early carrier, one cheap enhancement, and one protection or interaction spell. Examples include Plains, Island, Command Tower, Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Hyena Umbra, Blacksmith's Skill, and Spell Pierce; or Plains, Island, Razortide Bridge, Akrasan Squire, Ethereal Armor, Turn Aside, and Cartouche of Knowledge.

  • Medium keep: Keep a slower hand when it has mana, a credible carrier, and card flow, even if protection arrives late. A hand with Island, Plains, Skybridge Towers, Drift of Phantasms, Ophidian Eye, Counterspell, and Bonesplitter is playable if the opponent is not visibly fast, but it should prioritize defense and interaction before loading a single body.

  • Risky keep: Treat one-color hands as conditional keeps only when the hand already functions in that color and has a path to the missing color. Plains, Plains, Forge of Heroes, Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Sentinel's Eyes, Karametra's Blessing, and Cartouche of Solidarity is risky but coherent on the play; Island, Island, University Campus, Counterspell, Muddle the Mixture, Sigil of Sleep, and Ophidian Eye is too reactive without a carrier.

  • Automatic ship: Mulligan hands with no lands, one land without cheap action, five or more lands without card flow, no castable creature or commander plan, or only expensive equipment and auras. Hands such as Island, Island, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Muddle the Mixture, and Hindering Light cannot win without pressure; Plains, Plains, Mammoth Umbra, Greatsword of Tyr, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Armory of Iroas, and Last Thoughts is too slow without early board.

  • Matchup-dependent keep: Keep more reactive hands against spell-heavy opponents and more creature-dense hands against removal-light creature decks. Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Muddle the Mixture, and Blacksmith's Skill improve against visible stack interaction; Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Cartouche of Solidarity, Spirit Link, and Chains of Custody improve when stabilizing combat matters.

  • Play/draw adjustment: On the play, prefer a turn-two or turn-three protected Wraith, Vicious Vigilante line over holding several counters. On the draw, value Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Counterspell, You Come to a River, Chains of Custody, and cheap blockers higher because the opponent can force the first tempo exchange.

  • Trap hand: Do not keep hands that look explosive but fold to one answer. Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, All That Glitters, Ethereal Armor, and one creature is a trap without protection or replacement; One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Steel of the Godhead, and Mammoth Umbra are traps if the mana cannot cast Wraith, Vicious Vigilante first and defend it.

Turn Arc

  • Turn 1: Develop untapped color first unless a tapped dual land would otherwise fix the entire hand. Preferred plays are Plains or Island into Bone Saw, Utility Knife if legal, or no spell while preserving Spell Pierce or Turn Aside only when the opponent can act immediately; play Command Tower or Razortide Bridge early when it improves turns two and three.

  • Turn 1 deviation: Lead Path of Ancestry, Skybridge Towers, University Campus, Abandoned Campground, or North Pole Gates on a low-risk opener if it enters tapped or limits immediate interaction. Card text check required for Abandoned Campground and North Pole Gates before relying on exact timing.

  • Turn 2: Establish the first carrier or hold up interaction according to pressure. Cast Akrasan Squire, Aven Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast, or Wraith, Vicious Vigilante if legal and protected; otherwise hold Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Counterspell, or Muddle the Mixture for the first decisive stack fight.

  • Turn 2 deviation: Use Hyena Umbra, Sentinel's Eyes, Cartouche of Solidarity, Bonesplitter, Bone Saw, or Adventuring Gear only when the carrier is unlikely to be removed before combat. Avoid loading Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, or Ophidian Eye into open removal unless protection mana is available.

  • Turn 3: Commit Wraith, Vicious Vigilante with protection mana when possible. The preferred line is commander plus Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Turn Aside, Shore Up, Spell Pierce, or Hindering Light held up; if protection is absent, use Cartouche of Knowledge, Defiant Strike, Crumb and Get It, Dizzy Spell, Drift of Phantasms, or Muddle the Mixture only through legal actions that improve the next protected turn.

  • Turns 4-5: Turn a protected carrier into a clock while keeping one answer available. Add Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Sigil of Sleep, Spirit Link, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Armory of Iroas, or Greatsword of Tyr after checking visible blockers, open mana, and whether Counterspell, Take Up the Shield, Eel Umbra, Vanishing, or Blacksmith's Skill must be held.

  • Turns 4-5 deviation: Choose tempo over size when the opponent is racing. Chains of Custody, You Come to a River, Magic Damper, Hidden Strings, and combat tricks such as Adamant Will, Arrester's Zeal, Archon's Glory, Battlefield Improvisation, or Dúnedain Blade should buy a safe attack or prevent lethal damage; Card text check required for Magic Damper, Battlefield Improvisation, and Dúnedain Blade before relying on exact outcomes.

  • Late game: Rebuild around the safest visible carrier instead of forcing commander recasts into known answers. Recommission, Sentinel's Eyes, Tandem Lookout, Ophidian Eye, Last Thoughts, Dig Site Inventory, Goggles of Night, and equipment already on board can restore pressure, but only move all enhancements onto one creature when protection, evasion, or lethal pressure is visible in the legal actions.

Card Roles

  • Commander role: Wraith, Vicious Vigilante is the default carrier, pressure source, and reason to bias hands toward cheap protection plus one enhancement. Cast Wraith, Vicious Vigilante when the legal action sequence leaves mana for Turn Aside, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Spell Pierce, Hindering Light, or Counterspell, or when waiting would give the opponent too much board time. Do not stack multiple high-value auras onto Wraith, Vicious Vigilante into open interaction unless a protection action is visible.

  • Backup carriers: Akrasan Squire, Aven Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast, Tandem Lookout, Saiba Cryptomancer, and Drift of Phantasms give the deck bodies when commander recasts are taxed or unsafe. Prefer evasive or defensive carriers when the opponent has blockers; prefer cheap carriers when holding up protection is more important than raw size. Card text check required for Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast and Saiba Cryptomancer before relying on exact adventure, flash, or disguise-style timing.

  • Exalted and combat support: Akrasan Squire, Aven Squire, and Ethercaste Knight reward one-creature attacks, which matches the Voltron plan. Keep them back if their attack would expose a needed blocker, but allow their static pressure to make Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or another single attacker lethal faster. Do not trade these support bodies casually against creature decks unless the trade prevents a larger tempo loss.

  • Premium aura pressure: Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, Mammoth Umbra, Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Sentinel's Eyes, Spirit Link, Sigil of Sleep, Ophidian Eye, and Cartouche of Solidarity are the main ways to convert one creature into a game-ending threat. Put the first aura on the safest carrier, then pause for protection or countermagic before adding the second high-value aura. Card text check required for Steel of the Godhead color bonuses and exact lifelink/evasion application before treating it as guaranteed stabilization.

  • Resilience auras: Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Mammoth Umbra, Sentinel's Eyes, Benevolent Blessing, Vanishing, Take Up the Shield, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Adamant Will, Archon's Glory, Arrester's Zeal, Battlefield Improvisation, and Lightwheel Enhancements protect or swing combat, but they do not all answer the same effects. Use protection-like effects against targeted removal, toughness boosts against damage or combat, and totem-armor-style effects against destruction if the rules engine exposes that line. Card text check required for Battlefield Improvisation and Lightwheel Enhancements before assigning them a precise protection role.

  • Equipment pressure: Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, Utility Knife, Amorphous Axe, Kor Halberd, Dúnedain Blade, Strider Harness, Adventuring Gear, Armory of Iroas, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Greatsword of Tyr, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, and Goggles of Night are reusable damage sources that survive creature removal better than auras. Deploy cheap equipment before the carrier when it does not cost protection tempo, but equip only when the legal action sequence still leaves enough mana to answer removal or blockers. Card text check required for Dúnedain Blade, Goggles of Night, Kor Halberd, and Greatsword of Tyr before relying on exact equip restrictions or combat triggers.

  • Treasure and chip engines: Goldvein Pick and Prying Blade matter most when they connect early and help pay commander tax or hold up interaction. Prefer evasion from One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, Steel of the Godhead, or Gift of the Fae before leaning on combat-damage treasure. Do not spend a full turn equipping these into a board where the carrier cannot attack safely.

  • Card-flow attachments: Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, Cartouche of Knowledge, Defiant Strike, Crumb and Get It, Dig Site Inventory, Goggles of Night, and Hidden Strings are the deck's ways to avoid running out after protecting one threat. Prioritize draw effects when the commander is already safe and the opponent is not presenting lethal pressure. Card text check required for Crumb and Get It, Dig Site Inventory, Goggles of Night, and Last Thoughts before choosing exact draw, investigate, cipher, or timing lines.

  • Interaction stack: Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Muddle the Mixture, Dizzy Spell, Magic Damper, You Come to a River, and Chains of Custody are the control-tempo backbone. Spend hard permission on removal that kills the loaded carrier, sweep-like effects that undo the board, or a threat that races through the current clock. Use narrower counters first when their legal action text clearly matches the spell; save Counterspell and Muddle the Mixture for broader stack fights. Card text check required for Magic Damper before treating it as counterspell, tax, or protection.

  • Tutor and transmute package: Dizzy Spell, Muddle the Mixture, and Drift of Phantasms can be spells or selection tools, so decide before committing mana. Use them as interaction when the immediate stack or board demands it; use them as transmute-style setup only when the current turn is safe and the target cost band is visible from legal actions. Do not assume a specific tutor target unless the rules engine exposes the legal search candidates.

  • Tempo removal and bounce: Chains of Custody, You Come to a River, Sigil of Sleep, Hidden Strings, Cartouche of Knowledge, and Magic Damper can create attack windows or break opposing tempo. Use these before adding more damage when the visible blocker or opposing attacker changes the race. Card text check required for Chains of Custody and Hidden Strings before relying on exact tap, detain, bounce, or cipher outcomes.

  • Recursion and rebuild: Recommission and Sentinel's Eyes help recover after the first carrier dies. Hold Recommission until a relevant creature or aura target is actually in the graveyard and the resulting board can be protected; do not fire it merely because mana is unused. Sentinel's Eyes is strongest when the deck needs persistent pressure without risking a premium aura from hand.

  • Combat tricks and pump: Defiant Strike, Adamant Will, Arrester's Zeal, Archon's Glory, Take Up the Shield, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Blacksmith's Skill, You Come to a River, Crumb and Get It, and Battlefield Improvisation should be treated as interaction, not automatic damage. Cast them after blockers or removal when the legal action creates a survival, lethal, or major tempo swing. Avoid precombat pump unless it grants needed evasion or the opponent is tapped out.

  • Mana base roles: Plains and Island are the reliable color sources; Command Tower, Razortide Bridge, Path of Ancestry, University Campus, Skybridge Towers, Abandoned Campground, North Pole Gates, and Forge of Heroes are fixing or utility lands. Sequence untapped lands before protection turns and tapped or conditional lands before the deck needs double-spell turns. Card text check required for Abandoned Campground, North Pole Gates, Forge of Heroes, Path of Ancestry, University Campus, and Skybridge Towers before using nonmana abilities or commander-specific bonuses.

  • Risky role compression: The deck often asks one card to be offense, defense, and protection in the same turn. When a hand contains only one carrier, do not expose that carrier to a speculative aura line; when a hand contains only one protection spell, do not spend it on a low-impact exchange. The preferred pattern is carrier, one enhancement, one open answer, then additional damage after the opponent fails to answer the first threat.

Card Hover Notes

Wraith, Vicious Vigilante

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, commander and core Voltron carrier.
  • Role type: threat/clock; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Wraith, Vicious Vigilante is the default place to concentrate Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Hyena Umbra, Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Greatsword of Tyr, and similar damage pieces because double strike turns each power boost into twice the combat damage and its reference text says Wraith can't be blocked.
  • Timing: Cast when {1}{W}{U} is available and the turn can either keep up Turn Aside, Spell Pierce, Blacksmith's Skill, Shore Up, or Karametra's Blessing, or when waiting lets the opponent build too much pressure.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes commander mana and future commander tax; outputs unblockable commander-damage pressure and a premium target for lifegain, draw-on-damage, Treasure, and combat-trigger equipment.
  • Partners / packages: Best early layers are Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Vanishing, Benevolent Blessing, Blacksmith's Skill, and Karametra's Blessing before premium exposure from Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Ophidian Eye, or Sigil of Sleep.
  • Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Tandem Lookout, and Saiba Cryptomancer as emergency carriers.
  • Failure modes: Recasting through commander tax after an unprotected aura stack dies can strand Mammoth Umbra, Last Thoughts, and equip costs; do not tap out for redundant pump when one open protection spell changes the whole game.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against removal-heavy or tempo opponents, treat Wraith's first protected attack as the key window; against creature boards, unblockable double strike means evasion is solved, so prioritize protection, lifegain, and power.

Aven Squire

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, role-player backup carrier and exalted support body.
  • Role type: threat/clock; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Aven Squire gives a cheap flying body when Wraith, Vicious Vigilante is delayed and adds exalted to a single Wraith attack without requiring Aven Squire to attack.
  • Timing: Cast early when the hand needs a body before equipment; hold back from attacking if its exalted trigger makes Wraith's attack better or if it is the only profitable blocker.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs a 1/1 flyer, one exalted trigger for a lone attacker, and an alternate target for Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Sentinel's Eyes, Cartouche of Solidarity, or Cartouche of Knowledge.
  • Partners / packages: Pairs with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Akrasan Squire, and Ethercaste Knight for stacked single-attacker bonuses; carries One With the Wind or Spectral Flight only when Wraith access is poor.
  • Role peers: Akrasan Squire is cheaper exalted without flying; Ethercaste Knight is sturdier and artifact-count relevant for All That Glitters.
  • Failure modes: Trading Aven Squire in combat can remove a recurring exalted bonus that would have made Wraith lethal; do not load premium auras onto it when commander damage is the cleaner route.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better against ground stalls and early chip races; worse against decks showing flyers or pingers that make a 1/1 body fragile.

Counterspell

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, core stack interaction.
  • Role type: interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: Counterspell protects the loaded Wraith, Vicious Vigilante from any targetable spell on the stack and stops race-breaking threats before they resolve.
  • Timing: Hold for spells that remove the current carrier, blank combat damage, create a faster clock, or stop lethal; spend on lower-value spells only when no later turn is likely.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{U} and a card; outputs a hard counter to target spell on the stack.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Ophidian Eye, Sigil of Sleep, Vanishing, and high-equip turns better than narrow counters when the opposing spell type is uncertain.
  • Role peers: Muddle the Mixture only counters instant or sorcery spells; Spell Pierce only counters noncreature spells unless {2} is paid; Hindering Light and Turn Aside require targeting restrictions.
  • Failure modes: Spending Counterspell on a slow permanent can leave Wraith exposed to the actual removal spell; double-blue cost can conflict with casting Cartouche of Knowledge, Ophidian Eye, or You Come to a River.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against combo, sweepers, and removal-heavy control; less urgent against small creature development that Wraith can race.

Spell Pierce

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, cheap role-player permission.
  • Role type: interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: Spell Pierce lets this deck commit Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or a key aura while still holding one blue mana for a noncreature spell on the stack.
  • Timing: Strongest while the opponent is tapped low; use early on removal, counterspells, or noncreature stabilizers before the {2} tax becomes easy to pay.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs a conditional counter for target noncreature spell unless its controller pays {2}.
  • Partners / packages: Shields Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Vanishing, and Ophidian Eye commitment turns where Counterspell mana is unavailable.
  • Role peers: Turn Aside is narrower but unconditional if the spell targets a permanent you control; Dispel only hits instant spells from the sideboard; Counterspell is broader but costs {U}{U}.
  • Failure modes: Cannot counter creature spells, and becomes weak once the opponent keeps two extra mana open; do not hold it as if it answers a resolved permanent.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best versus control, tempo, and combo turns with noncreature stack objects; sideboard out or devalue when the opponent mostly casts creatures.

Hindering Light

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, protective cantrip permission.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Hindering Light counters a spell that targets you or a permanent you control, then draws a card, making it ideal when the opponent points removal at Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or a stacked carrier.
  • Timing: Hold through aura and combat turns if the opponent has open mana; cast only on a legal target spell on the stack, not on untargeted sweepers or edicts.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}{U}; outputs a counter to the targeting spell and replaces itself with one card.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Sigil of Sleep, Chains of Custody, and equipment-bearing creatures from targeted stack interaction.
  • Role peers: Keep Safe is sideboarded and protects permanents you control while drawing; Turn Aside is cheaper without draw; Blacksmith's Skill protects a permanent but does not counter the spell.
  • Failure modes: Does not counter a spell that targets only an opponent's permanent, a spell with no targets, or a creature spell that simply resolves into a blocker.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against spot removal and burn aimed at you; weak against sacrifice, mass -X/-X, or creature-only pressure.

Dizzy Spell

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, flexible one-mana interaction and transmute role player.
  • Role type: tutor/search; interaction-removal; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Dizzy Spell can shrink a creature's power for one combat step or be discarded at sorcery speed to find a mana value 1 card that supplies the missing Voltron role.
  • Timing: Use the instant side to survive combat or reduce a lethal attacker; transmute only when the board is safe enough to spend {1}{U}{U} without affecting combat.
  • Inputs / outputs: Instant side consumes {U} for target creature -3/-0 until end of turn; transmute consumes {1}{U}{U}, discards Dizzy Spell, searches for a card with mana value 1, reveals it, puts it into hand, then shuffles.
  • Mode map: Cast mode buys a combat step against one target creature; Transmute mode finds exact mana value 1 hits such as Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Spirit Link, Hyena Umbra, Bone Saw, Sigil of Sleep, Blacksmith's Skill, Sentinel's Eyes, Vanishing, Bonesplitter, Adventuring Gear, Shore Up, Karametra's Blessing, Magic Damper, Kor Halberd, Darksteel Axe, Akrasan Squire, Arrester's Zeal, Archon's Glory, Utility Knife, or Dig Site Inventory.
  • Partners / packages: Tutor targets most often are Hyena Umbra for destruction insurance, Blacksmith's Skill or Karametra's Blessing for protection, Sigil of Sleep for tempo, and Bone Saw or Bonesplitter for cheap double-strike damage.
  • Role peers: Muddle the Mixture searches mana value 2 cards and counters instant or sorcery spells; Drift of Phantasms searches mana value 3 cards or blocks as a flyer with defender.
  • Failure modes: Transmute is sorcery-speed and cannot answer a live stack; the -3/-0 mode does not remove a blocker or protect from noncombat removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better against creature races when one attacker matters; better as transmute against slow games where a specific one-mana shield or aura is missing.

Turn Aside

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, narrow core protection counter.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Turn Aside counters target spell that targets a permanent you control, making it a one-mana shield for Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, an enchanted backup carrier, a key aura, or an equipment permanent.
  • Timing: Hold during the turn you expose Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Ophidian Eye, or multiple equipment on one creature.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs a counter to the targeting spell on the stack.
  • Partners / packages: Best when defending Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Chains of Custody, Vanishing, Benevolent Blessing, or a creature carrying Golem-Skin Gauntlets and Greatsword of Tyr.
  • Role peers: Hindering Light also covers spells targeting you and draws a card; Keep Safe is sideboarded and draws; Intervene only covers a spell that targets a creature.
  • Failure modes: Does not counter untargeted edicts, sweepers, combat damage, or spells targeting only you; do not hold it as the only answer to a non-targeting board reset.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against spot removal and bounce; weak against creature swarms and sacrifice effects.

Muddle the Mixture

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, stack interaction and transmute tutor.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; tutor/search; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Muddle the Mixture either counters a target instant or sorcery spell on the stack or searches for a mana value 2 card that solves the current Voltron bottleneck.
  • Timing: Keep as interaction when the opponent can cast removal, bounce, or a decisive instant/sorcery; transmute at sorcery speed only when safe and when a two-mana card is more important than holding {U}{U}.
  • Inputs / outputs: Counter mode consumes {U}{U}; transmute consumes {1}{U}{U}, discards Muddle the Mixture, searches for a card with mana value 2, reveals it, puts it into hand, then shuffles.
  • Mode map: Counter mode answers target instant or sorcery spell only; Transmute mode finds mana value 2 cards such as Aven Squire, Goldvein Pick, All That Glitters, Benevolent Blessing, Eel Umbra, Prying Blade, Greatsword of Tyr, Take Up the Shield, Armory of Iroas, Recommission, You Come to a River, Cartouche of Knowledge, Goggles of Night, Hidden Strings, Adamant Will, Saiba Cryptomancer, Battlefield Improvisation, Dúnedain Blade, Ethercaste Knight, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Keep Safe, Guided Strike, Flare of Faith, Rebellious Strike, Beaming Defiance, or Bonds of Faith.
  • Partners / packages: Search priorities are All That Glitters for scaling damage, Benevolent Blessing or Eel Umbra for protection, Cartouche of Knowledge or Spectral Flight for flying, and Recommission after a carrier dies.
  • Role peers: Counterspell counters any target spell; Dizzy Spell searches mana value 1; Drift of Phantasms searches mana value 3.
  • Failure modes: Cannot counter creature, artifact, enchantment, or planeswalker spells unless they are also instant or sorcery, which they normally are not; transmuting discards a premium answer.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against instant/sorcery-heavy control and combo; transmute more often against creature boards where stack targets are scarce.

Drift of Phantasms

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, defensive body and transmute role player.
  • Role type: tutor/search; threat/clock; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Drift of Phantasms blocks flyers and buys time, or searches for a mana value 3 card such as Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or Steel of the Godhead when the commander plan needs a specific piece.
  • Timing: Cast as a 0/5 flying defender when life total or opposing flyers matter; transmute at sorcery speed when protection and board state permit setup.
  • Inputs / outputs: Creature mode consumes {2}{U} for a 0/5 defender with flying; transmute consumes {1}{U}{U}, discards Drift of Phantasms, searches mana value 3, reveals, puts into hand, then shuffles.
  • Mode map: Creature mode cannot attack because it has defender; Transmute mode can find mana value 3 cards including Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Drift of Phantasms, Steel of the Godhead, Chains of Custody, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Strider Harness, and Acrobatic Leap.
  • Partners / packages: Searches Wraith, Vicious Vigilante when commander access is disrupted by zone state, Steel of the Godhead for lifelink plus unblockable on Wraith, and Chains of Custody for a blocker or threat.
  • Role peers: Dizzy Spell and Muddle the Mixture are cheaper transmute cards with smaller cost bands; Aven Squire is an attacking flyer rather than a wall.
  • Failure modes: As a creature it carries equipment poorly because it cannot attack; transmuting may be too slow when the opponent already threatens lethal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against flyers, big ground races with airborne pressure, and slow games where finding Wraith or Steel of the Godhead is decisive.

Skybridge Towers

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, tapped Azorius mana resource with late card draw.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Skybridge Towers fixes both Wraith colors and later converts excess mana into a card after the deck has stabilized a carrier.
  • Timing: Play on a low-risk early turn because it enters tapped; sacrifice for a card only when {2}{W}{U} plus tapping and losing the land does not cut off protection or commander tax.
  • Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped; taps for {W} or {U}; activated draw consumes {2}{W}{U}, tap, and sacrifice Skybridge Towers to draw one card.
  • Partners / packages: Helps cast Counterspell, Muddle the Mixture, Steel of the Godhead, Hindering Light, and Wraith, Vicious Vigilante by providing either color.
  • Role peers: North Pole Gates also enters tapped and can sacrifice to draw; University Campus filters with surveil; Razortide Bridge enters tapped but is indestructible and an artifact for All That Glitters.
  • Failure modes: Playing it on a turn that needed untapped Turn Aside, Spell Pierce, Blacksmith's Skill, or Karametra's Blessing can lose the carrier.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in grindy games; worse against fast pressure where tapped mana delays Wraith or protection.

Abandoned Campground

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, conditional Azorius mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Abandoned Campground gives either Wraith color and becomes untapped only if a player has 13 or less life, which can matter once double-strike pressure or races have lowered life totals.
  • Timing: Sequence early only when the tapped entry will not cost a protection window; later it may enter untapped after any player is at 13 or less.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for {W} or {U}; enters tapped unless a player has 13 or less life.
  • Partners / packages: Casts Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Steel of the Godhead, Hyena Umbra, and Karametra's Blessing depending on color need.
  • Role peers: Command Tower is untapped perfect fixing; Path of Ancestry, Skybridge Towers, University Campus, North Pole Gates, and Razortide Bridge usually cost tempo by entering tapped.
  • Failure modes: Treating it as always untapped can strand one-mana protection in the opening turns; it does not provide any extra utility beyond color fixing.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: More attractive in games where early attacks already pushed a player to 13; risky in hands that need turn-one or turn-two interaction.
  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, lifegain aura role player.
  • Role type: lifegain/stabilization; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Spirit Link turns Wraith, Vicious Vigilante's double-strike damage into a large life swing, and it can also enchant an opposing creature so you gain life when that creature deals damage.
  • Timing: Put on Wraith when racing or stabilizing matters and protection is available; consider enchanting an opposing attacker only when gaining life from its damage is better than building your own clock.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W} and an Aura target; outputs a triggered life gain for Spirit Link's controller whenever enchanted creature deals damage.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, and Greatsword of Tyr because more damage means more life.
  • Role peers: Steel of the Godhead gives lifelink only while the enchanted creature is white; Take Up the Shield gives temporary lifelink; Moment of Triumph is sideboarded one-shot lifegain.
  • Failure modes: Spirit Link does not grant lifelink and does not prevent damage; if placed on an opponent's creature, it does not stop commander damage, poison-like pressure, or noncombat effects.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: High value against burn and creature races; lower value against combo or control if the carrier is not surviving long enough to deal damage.

Hyena Umbra

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, core one-mana resilience aura.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Hyena Umbra gives Wraith, Vicious Vigilante +1/+1, first strike, and umbra armor, making an early loaded carrier much safer against destruction and combat damage.
  • Timing: Cast before premium auras when the opponent can destroy the carrier; also use before combat when first strike changes blocking math.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W} and an Aura target; outputs +1/+1, first strike, and replacement protection if enchanted creature would be destroyed by removing damage and destroying Hyena Umbra instead.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Spirit Link, and Sigil of Sleep because it protects the creature carrying those cards.
  • Role peers: Eel Umbra adds flash and +1/+1; Mammoth Umbra is larger and expensive; Sentinel's Eyes recurs but does not protect from destruction.
  • Failure modes: Umbra armor does not stop exile, bounce, sacrifice, -N/-N, or Auras being removed directly; first strike is less relevant on unblockable Wraith than on backup carriers.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against destroy removal and combat; weaker against edict-heavy or bounce-heavy opponents.

Island

  • Deck role: Main, 12 copies, basic blue mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides untapped blue for Wraith, Vicious Vigilante with white, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Dizzy Spell, Turn Aside, Muddle the Mixture, Drift of Phantasms, Ophidian Eye, Sigil of Sleep, Eel Umbra, Vanishing, Shore Up, You Come to a River, Magic Damper, Cartouche of Knowledge, Hidden Strings, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, Saiba Cryptomancer, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Dispel, Intervene, and Keep Safe.
  • Timing: Play early when blue interaction or Wraith's blue pip is the bottleneck; keep Island untapped when Turn Aside, Spell Pierce, Shore Up, Dispel, Intervene, or Keep Safe can protect the carrier.
  • Inputs / outputs: Uses a land drop and taps for {U}; enters untapped and costs no life.
  • Partners / packages: Pairs with Plains, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, Skybridge Towers, North Pole Gates, University Campus, and Abandoned Campground to assemble Wraith colors.
  • Role peers: Plains supplies the white half of Wraith and protection; Command Tower fixes both colors untapped, while Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, Skybridge Towers, North Pole Gates, and University Campus usually enter tapped.
  • Failure modes: Island-only hands can strand Spirit Link, Hyena Umbra, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead's white side, Benevolent Blessing, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Recommission, Take Up the Shield, and white sideboard tricks.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Highest value against removal and stack-pressure decks where holding blue protection matters; balance with Plains when white Auras or commander recasts decide the clock.

Ophidian Eye

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, card-flow aura and flash connection engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Ophidian Eye turns Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or another connecting creature into repeatable card draw whenever the enchanted creature deals damage to an opponent.
  • Timing: Use flash to wait until removal shields are clear, or cast before combat when a connection is very likely; do not invest if the carrier cannot deal damage to an opponent.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{U} and an Aura target; outputs optional card draw on each damage event to an opponent by enchanted creature.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante because double strike can create multiple damage events, and with One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, Steel of the Godhead, and You Come to a River's unblockable mode when backup carriers need access.
  • Role peers: Tandem Lookout grants draw through soulbond; Last Thoughts uses cipher; Goggles of Night draws only on combat damage to a player.
  • Failure modes: Three mana is a large tap-out into removal, and drawing cards does not matter if the creature dies before damage; it does nothing against opponents you cannot damage.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in removal-light or tapped-out games; sideboard down against decks that kill the carrier before combat damage.

Bone Saw

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, zero-mana equipment material and damage booster.
  • Role type: threat/clock; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Bone Saw gives Wraith, Vicious Vigilante a free permanent for All That Glitters and a cheap +1/+0 that double strike converts into two extra combat damage.
  • Timing: Cast early when it does not reveal a weak line; equip for {1} before combat when the damage changes the clock or when spare mana would otherwise go unused.
  • Inputs / outputs: Cast cost {0}; equip consumes {1}; outputs +1/+0 and an artifact permanent.
  • Partners / packages: Feeds All That Glitters, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Recommission, Battlefield Improvisation, and Wraith, Vicious Vigilante.
  • Role peers: Bonesplitter and Darksteel Axe give +2/+0 for more cost; Utility Knife attaches on entry; Kor Halberd adds toughness and vigilance.
  • Failure modes: A free cast does not mean free impact; equipping can still consume the mana needed for Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, or Blacksmith's Skill.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in tempo games where cheap pressure matters; poor as a topdeck if no creature is safe to carry it.

Plains

  • Deck role: Main, 16 copies, primary basic white mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides untapped white for Wraith, Vicious Vigilante with blue, Aven Squire, Spirit Link, Hyena Umbra, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead's white side, Benevolent Blessing, Chains of Custody, Greatsword of Tyr, Blacksmith's Skill, Crumb and Get It, Sentinel's Eyes, Cartouche of Solidarity, Take Up the Shield, Defiant Strike, Recommission, Karametra's Blessing, Mammoth Umbra, Kor Halberd, Dig Site Inventory, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, and white sideboard tricks.
  • Timing: Play early when white Aura layering, protection, or Wraith's white pip is the bottleneck; keep Plains untapped when Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Defiant Strike, Guided Strike, Flare of Faith, Beaming Defiance, or Moment of Triumph can swing combat or removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Uses a land drop and taps for {W}; enters untapped and costs no life.
  • Partners / packages: Pairs with Island, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, Skybridge Towers, North Pole Gates, University Campus, and Abandoned Campground to assemble Wraith colors.
  • Role peers: Island supplies blue protection and card flow; Command Tower fixes both colors untapped, while Razortide Bridge adds artifact count and the other Azorius duals trade tempo for fixing or late utility.
  • Failure modes: Plains-only hands can strand Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Muddle the Mixture, Ophidian Eye, Sigil of Sleep, Eel Umbra, Vanishing, Shore Up, You Come to a River, Cartouche of Knowledge, Hidden Strings, Last Thoughts, and blue sideboard protection.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Highest value in races and creature fights where white Auras, lifegain, and protection decide Wraith's first hit; balance with Island against counterspell or instant-removal opponents.

Goldvein Pick

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, equipment role player for damage and Treasure.
  • Role type: engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Goldvein Pick turns safe combat damage from Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or an evasive backup carrier into Treasure that pays for commander tax, equip costs, and holding up protection.
  • Timing: Equip only when the creature can realistically deal combat damage to a player; prioritize evasion or Wraith's unblockable text before spending mana on it.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {2}; equip {1}; outputs +1/+1 and a Treasure token whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Steel of the Godhead, Hidden Strings, and Goggles of Night as connection support.
  • Role peers: Prying Blade makes Treasure with cheaper cast cost but equip {2} and only +1/+0; Strider Harness gives haste; Armory of Iroas grows counters on attack.
  • Failure modes: No Treasure is made without combat damage to a player; equipping into a blocker stall can waste the turn and leave no blue or white shield.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in grindy games with safe attacks; weak against removal-heavy decks that stop the first connection.

Ethereal Armor

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, core scalable aura payoff.
  • Role type: engine payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Ethereal Armor rewards the deck's enchantment density by giving enchanted creature +1/+1 for each enchantment you control plus first strike, making Wraith, Vicious Vigilante lethal much faster.
  • Timing: Cast after the carrier has protection or when it creates an immediate lethal or survival-changing attack; avoid early exposure if the opponent has open removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W} and an Aura target; outputs scaling power/toughness based on enchantments you control and first strike.
  • Partners / packages: Counts itself and grows alongside Spirit Link, Hyena Umbra, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Sigil of Sleep, Eel Umbra, Sentinel's Eyes, Cartouche of Solidarity, Vanishing, Benevolent Blessing, Cartouche of Knowledge, Mammoth Umbra, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Lightwheel Enhancements, and Bonds of Faith if sideboarded.
  • Role peers: All That Glitters also counts artifacts; Mammoth Umbra gives fixed +3/+3 and umbra armor; Bonesplitter gives reusable power without aura risk.
  • Failure modes: Weak when cast as the first enchantment onto an unprotected creature; losing the carrier can lose several enchantments at once.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best when the opponent is tapped out or destroy-only removal is covered by Hyena Umbra or Eel Umbra; risky into bounce and edicts.

All That Glitters

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, core scalable aura payoff.
  • Role type: engine payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: All That Glitters gives the carrier +1/+1 for each artifact and/or enchantment you control, using both equipment and aura buildup to create a fast Wraith damage clock.
  • Timing: Save until at least two artifacts/enchantments are on board or when one big attack changes the game; cast earlier only with protection or urgent clock pressure.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W} and an Aura target; outputs scaling stats from artifacts and enchantments you control.
  • Partners / packages: Counts Bone Saw, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Armory of Iroas, Bonesplitter, Goggles of Night, Kor Halberd, Amorphous Axe, Darksteel Axe, Dúnedain Blade, Strider Harness, Utility Knife, Razortide Bridge, and the deck's Auras that are currently controlled.
  • Role peers: Ethereal Armor is cheaper and gives first strike but counts only enchantments; Golem-Skin Gauntlets scales with Equipment attached to the creature.
  • Failure modes: Does not grant evasion or protection; a large grounded backup carrier can still be chumped unless paired with Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, or Gift of the Fae.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against slower boards; dangerous against instant-speed removal if no Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Blacksmith's Skill, or Karametra's Blessing is available.

Steel of the Godhead

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, premium aura payoff for Wraith.
  • Role type: threat/clock; lifegain/stabilization; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: On Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Steel of the Godhead gives +2/+2 total because Wraith is white and blue, adds lifelink from the white condition, and reinforces unblockability from the blue condition.
  • Timing: Cast when Wraith is on board and protected, or when lifelink immediately stabilizes a race; it is less urgent on non-white or non-blue creatures because they may receive only part of the text.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{W/U} and an Aura target; outputs +1/+1 and lifelink if enchanted creature is white, plus +1/+1 and can't be blocked if enchanted creature is blue.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante; also meaningful on Ethercaste Knight because it is white and blue, and on Saiba Cryptomancer as a blue creature when a backup unblockable carrier is needed.
  • Role peers: Spirit Link supplies lifegain without stats; One With the Wind and Spectral Flight grant flying; Ethereal Armor and All That Glitters scale harder but do not grant lifelink.
  • Failure modes: Casting on Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast, or Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae gives only the white bonus if those creatures are only white; do not assume both halves apply to every carrier.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against races and ground stalls; protect from bounce or exile because losing it is a major tempo swing.

Benevolent Blessing

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, flash aura protection role player.
  • Role type: protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Benevolent Blessing gives the enchanted creature protection from a chosen color while preserving Auras and Equipment you control already attached to it, making it a precise shield for Wraith, Vicious Vigilante.
  • Timing: Use with flash in response to targeted removal, during combat to blank a colored blocker or damage source, or before an attack when one color defines the opponent's interaction.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}, an Aura target, and a color choice as it enters; outputs protection from that color without removing your already attached Auras and Equipment.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith, Vicious Vigilante and large stacks involving Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Sigil of Sleep, and Golem-Skin Gauntlets.
  • Role peers: Blacksmith's Skill gives hexproof and indestructible to a permanent for one turn; Karametra's Blessing protects an enchanted creature with hexproof and indestructible; Vanishing phases out the enchanted creature.
  • Failure modes: Choosing the wrong color can fail to stop removal or blockers; protection may make future targeting by spells or Auras of that chosen color illegal, so check sequencing.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best when the opponent's key removal or blockers share a color; weaker against colorless, sacrifice, or non-targeting effects.

Sigil of Sleep

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, tempo aura engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Sigil of Sleep turns damage to a player into a bounce trigger that returns target creature that player controls to its owner's hand, letting Wraith's unblockable hits erase blockers or attackers.
  • Timing: Cast when the enchanted creature can damage a player this turn or next turn; prioritize before extra pump when a single opposing creature is controlling combat.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U} and an Aura target; outputs repeatable creature bounce tied to damage to a player.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, and Goggles of Night because the same connection produces tempo plus resources.
  • Role peers: You Come to a River bounces one nonland permanent immediately; Chains of Custody exiles a nonland permanent while attached; Hidden Strings can tap blockers.
  • Failure modes: Requires damage to a player, not just attacking; it targets a creature controlled by that damaged player and does not answer noncreature permanents.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: High value against single large blockers or commanders; weaker against go-wide boards where bouncing one creature is not enough.

Eel Umbra

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, flash resilience aura.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Eel Umbra protects the current carrier at instant speed with umbra armor while adding +1/+1, making it a strong response to destruction or combat damage.
  • Timing: Hold as a flash shield instead of tapping out precombat unless the extra power changes a lethal Wraith swing.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U} and an Aura target; outputs +1/+1 and umbra armor, replacing destruction by removing damage and destroying Eel Umbra instead.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Steel of the Godhead, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Ophidian Eye, and Sigil of Sleep stacks.
  • Role peers: Hyena Umbra is cheaper and grants first strike but lacks flash; Mammoth Umbra is larger but costs {4}{W}; Blacksmith's Skill protects any permanent for one turn.
  • Failure modes: Does not stop exile, bounce, sacrifice, or -N/-N effects; holding {1}{U} can conflict with Counterspell and Muddle the Mixture.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against destroy removal and combat tricks; less reliable against blue bounce or edict effects.

Prying Blade

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, Treasure equipment role player.
  • Role type: engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Prying Blade supplies +1/+0 and makes Treasure when the equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, helping pay commander tax and double-spell protection turns.
  • Timing: Cast early if spare mana is available; equip for {2} only when the carrier is likely to connect or when Treasure will materially unlock the next turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}; equip {2}; outputs +1/+0 and a Treasure token on combat damage to a player.
  • Partners / packages: Works best with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, and You Come to a River's unblockable mode.
  • Role peers: Goldvein Pick has cheaper equip and +1/+1 but costs {2}; Bone Saw is cheaper damage with no Treasure; Goggles of Night gives card flow on connection.
  • Failure modes: Spending {2} to equip into blockers or removal is a tempo loss; Treasure does not arrive before combat for the protection spell needed that same attack.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against slow decks where repeated hits happen; weak against fast aggro when the first priority is survival.

Chains of Custody

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, removal aura and carrier ward layer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Chains of Custody enchants a creature you control, exiles target nonland permanent an opponent controls until Chains leaves, and gives the enchanted creature ward {2}.
  • Timing: Use when an opposing nonland permanent blocks Wraith's plan, threatens lethal, or must be removed before a key attack; cast on a creature you can keep alive.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{W}, a creature you control as Aura target, and a target nonland permanent an opponent controls; outputs temporary exile and ward {2} on the enchanted creature.
  • Partners / packages: Best on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or a protected carrier with Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Benevolent Blessing, Blacksmith's Skill, or Karametra's Blessing.
  • Role peers: You Come to a River can bounce a nonland permanent at instant speed; Sigil of Sleep repeatedly bounces creatures after damage; Bonds of Faith sideboards as creature containment.
  • Failure modes: If Chains of Custody leaves the battlefield, the exiled permanent returns; it can only enchant a creature you control, so it needs your board before it can remove anything.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against single blockers, engines, and opposing Voltron pieces; risky against enchantment removal and bounce.

Golem-Skin Gauntlets

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, scaling equipment payoff.
  • Role type: engine payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Golem-Skin Gauntlets rewards stacking Equipment on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante by giving +1/+0 for each Equipment attached to that creature.
  • Timing: Deploy when at least one other Equipment can be attached soon, or when a Battlefield Improvisation attack can move multiple Equipment onto the attacker.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}; equip {2}; outputs scaling power from Equipment attached to the equipped creature.
  • Partners / packages: Scales with Bone Saw, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Greatsword of Tyr, Armory of Iroas, Bonesplitter, Adventuring Gear, Goggles of Night, Kor Halberd, Amorphous Axe, Darksteel Axe, Dúnedain Blade, Strider Harness, and Utility Knife.
  • Role peers: All That Glitters counts artifacts and enchantments you control; Bonesplitter and Darksteel Axe give fixed reusable power.
  • Failure modes: Does nothing special with Auras and is weak as the only Equipment attached; equip {2} can crowd out protection mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in games where equipment survives removal; weaker when the opponent can repeatedly kill or bounce the equipped creature before combat.

Greatsword of Tyr

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, combat-snowball equipment.
  • Role type: threat/clock; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Greatsword of Tyr adds a +1/+1 counter whenever equipped creature attacks and can tap up to one target creature defending player controls, letting Wraith grow while suppressing a blocker or attacker for the next exchange.
  • Timing: Equip before combat when the attack is safe and the tap target changes the combat step; do not cast only for future value if protection must be held.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}{W}; equip {W}; outputs repeated +1/+1 counters on attack and optional tap of up to one target creature defending player controls.
  • Partners / packages: Excellent on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante and with Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Ophidian Eye, and Sigil of Sleep because it improves a connection attack.
  • Role peers: Armory of Iroas also adds counters on attack but does not tap a creature; Dúnedain Blade gives fixed stats and cheap Human equip.
  • Failure modes: The tap trigger happens on attack and cannot remove a blocker if the target is illegal or has vigilance-like relevance later; equip still happens only as a sorcery.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against creature decks with one key blocker; less important when Wraith already cannot be blocked and the opponent is answering on the stack.

Blacksmith's Skill

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, premium one-mana protection.
  • Role type: protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Blacksmith's Skill gives target permanent hexproof and indestructible until end of turn, so it can save Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, an Aura, Equipment, Chains of Custody, or Razortide Bridge from many targeted or destroy effects.
  • Timing: Hold for removal, combat damage, or destroy effects that would cost multiple attached cards; cast proactively only when forcing lethal through visible interaction.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs hexproof and indestructible to target permanent until end of turn, with +2/+2 only if that permanent is an artifact creature.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith, Vicious Vigilante carrying Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Ophidian Eye, Sigil of Sleep, or Golem-Skin Gauntlets.
  • Role peers: Karametra's Blessing gives larger stats and stronger text for enchanted creatures; Shore Up and Magic Damper give hexproof plus untap to creatures; Turn Aside counters the targeting spell instead.
  • Failure modes: Does not stop sacrifice, exile that does not destroy through indestructible, or untargeted effects; Wraith is not an artifact creature, so do not count the +2/+2.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against targeted removal and artifact/enchantment removal aimed at key permanents; weaker against edicts and sweepers that use -N/-N.

Crumb and Get It

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, combat pump and conditional indestructible trick.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Crumb and Get It gives target creature you control +2/+2, and if you promised the Food gift, that creature also gains indestructible while the opponent creates a Food token first.
  • Timing: Cast after blockers or in response to damage/removal when +2/+2 or indestructible matters; promise the gift only when indestructible is worth giving the opponent a Food.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; may give an opponent a Food token; outputs +2/+2 to target creature you control and, if gifted, indestructible until end of turn.
  • Mode map: No-gift line is pure +2/+2 for damage or toughness; Gift a Food line gives the opponent a Food token before the effect and adds indestructible for survival or lethal pressure.
  • Partners / packages: Strong on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante because double strike doubles the +2 power; pairs with Spirit Link or Steel of the Godhead when a larger lifegain hit wins the race.
  • Role peers: Adamant Will gives +2/+2 and indestructible without gifting; Take Up the Shield gives a counter, lifelink, and indestructible; Moment of Triumph sideboards as pump plus life.
  • Failure modes: Gifted Food can help the opponent stabilize by gaining 3 life later; indestructible does not stop exile, bounce, sacrifice, or -N/-N.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best in combat races and destroy-removal windows; avoid gifting against slow decks unless saving Wraith is decisive.

Sentinel's Eyes

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, recursive vigilance aura.
  • Role type: recursion; threat/clock; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Sentinel's Eyes gives +1/+1 and vigilance, then can be recast from the graveyard with escape to rebuild Wraith pressure after removal.
  • Timing: Cast early when vigilance lets Wraith attack and still block; escape when spending two other graveyard cards will not weaken Recommission plans or future recovery.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W} and an Aura target; escape consumes {W} and exiles two other cards from your graveyard to cast Sentinel's Eyes from graveyard.
  • Mode map: Normal cast uses a card from hand; Escape cast uses the graveyard and exiles two other graveyard cards, then Sentinel's Eyes resolves as an Aura rather than being exiled on resolution.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Recommission, Dig Site Inventory, and Lightwheel Enhancements as the deck's small graveyard-value cluster.
  • Role peers: Lightwheel Enhancements can be cast from graveyard at max speed; Hyena Umbra protects from destruction but does not recur.
  • Failure modes: Exiling two other graveyard cards can remove Recommission targets or fuel needed for later escape; vigilance does not matter if the opponent is not attacking.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against attrition and aggro races; weaker against graveyard hate or exile removal.

Cartouche of Solidarity

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, aura pressure plus token material.
  • Role type: threat/clock; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Cartouche of Solidarity enchants a creature you control, gives +1/+1 and first strike, and creates a 1/1 white Warrior creature token with vigilance as a backup body or blocker.
  • Timing: Cast when a protected carrier is ready or when the Warrior token matters for blocking; early first strike can make Wraith or a backup carrier safer in combat.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs an Aura, +1/+1, first strike, and one vigilant Warrior token.
  • Partners / packages: Counts for Ethereal Armor and All That Glitters, gives another permanent for All That Glitters, and leaves a body for Bone Saw, Utility Knife, or Recommission pressure if Wraith is delayed.
  • Role peers: Hyena Umbra is one-mana first-strike protection; Sentinel's Eyes gives vigilance and recursion; Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast creates a Royal Role token with ward {1}.
  • Failure modes: The Aura can only enchant a creature you control; the token is small and should not be treated as expendable if it is the only blocker.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better against creature decks where first strike and an extra blocker matter; less urgent when Wraith is already unblockable and protected.

Vanishing

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, reusable phase-out protection aura.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Vanishing enchants Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or another carrier and lets {U}{U} phase the enchanted creature out to dodge removal, combat, and many board events.
  • Timing: Cast when you can keep {U}{U} available on critical turns; activate in response to removal or when survival matters more than staying present for combat.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U} to enchant; activated ability consumes {U}{U}; outputs a phased-out creature that is treated as though it does not exist until it phases in before its controller untaps.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Wraith carrying Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Ophidian Eye, or several Equipment because phasing preserves attached permanents.
  • Role peers: Benevolent Blessing protects from one color; Blacksmith's Skill gives one-turn hexproof/indestructible; Eel Umbra handles destruction.
  • Failure modes: {U}{U} is mana-intensive and can conflict with Counterspell; phasing out removes the carrier from current combat and may skip a lethal attack.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against targeted removal and some sweepers; poor when repeated mana holding prevents developing a clock.

Take Up the Shield

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, permanent counter and lifelink protection trick.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: Take Up the Shield puts a +1/+1 counter on Wraith or another carrier, then gives lifelink and indestructible for the turn, creating both survival and a race swing.
  • Timing: Use in combat after blocks or in response to destroy damage when the counter and lifelink change the turn; cast proactively only for lethal or survival math.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs one permanent +1/+1 counter, lifelink, and indestructible until end of turn on target creature.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante because double strike increases lifegain, and with Greatsword of Tyr or Armory of Iroas because counters compound.
  • Role peers: Adamant Will gives +2/+2 and indestructible for one turn; Crumb and Get It can grant indestructible if gifted; Spirit Link and Steel of the Godhead provide repeatable life gain.
  • Failure modes: Does not grant hexproof, so targeted exile or bounce can still answer the creature; lifelink matters only if damage is dealt.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: High value against burn, aggro, and combat removal; less useful against edicts or counterspell fights.

Armory of Iroas

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, attack-scaling equipment.
  • Role type: engine payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Armory of Iroas puts a +1/+1 counter on the equipped creature whenever it attacks, turning repeated Wraith attacks into a growing permanent clock.
  • Timing: Equip before a safe attack; prefer it when the game will last multiple combat steps rather than when immediate power is required.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {2}; equip {2}; outputs one +1/+1 counter on each equipped-creature attack.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Greatsword of Tyr, Take Up the Shield, Dig Site Inventory, Forge of Heroes, and protection spells that help the counter stack survive.
  • Role peers: Greatsword of Tyr also adds counters and taps a creature; Darksteel Axe and Bonesplitter give immediate power without requiring attacks.
  • Failure modes: No counter is gained if the creature cannot safely attack; equip {2} can use mana needed for Turn Aside, Hindering Light, or Blacksmith's Skill.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in midrange races; slow against combo and instant-removal control.

Bonesplitter

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, efficient reusable damage equipment.
  • Role type: threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Bonesplitter gives +2/+0 for one cast mana and one equip mana, which is four extra damage per Wraith double-strike combat.
  • Timing: Cast early and equip when it changes the clock while leaving at least one protection or interaction window if the opponent can answer.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}; equip {1}; outputs +2/+0 as a reusable artifact.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, All That Glitters, Battlefield Improvisation, and Recommission if it reaches the graveyard.
  • Role peers: Darksteel Axe is indestructible but equip {2}; Bone Saw is free but smaller; Dúnedain Blade gives +2/+1 with cheap Human equip for Wraith.
  • Failure modes: Adds no evasion or protection, so backup carriers can still be blocked; equipping into removal loses tempo even though Bonesplitter remains.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent when Wraith is already unblockable and protected; lower priority when survival or card flow is missing.

Adventuring Gear

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, landfall burst equipment.
  • Role type: threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Adventuring Gear turns each land entering under your control into +2/+2 for the equipped creature until end of turn, creating burst Wraith damage on land-drop turns.
  • Timing: Equip before playing the land if the landfall pump matters; delay land drops before draw only when a drawn land could change the attack.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}; equip {1}; outputs +2/+2 until end of turn whenever a land you control enters.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, Skybridge Towers, North Pole Gates, University Campus, Abandoned Campground, Forge of Heroes, Island, and Plains.
  • Role peers: Bonesplitter gives steady +2/+0; Armory of Iroas gives permanent counters; Dig Site Inventory gives a permanent +1/+1 counter from a spell.
  • Failure modes: Poor when lands are exhausted or when tapped lands must be played after combat for protection sequencing; no landfall means no pump.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in early pressure hands with lands to play; weak in topdeck wars without land drops.

Shore Up

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, one-mana creature protection and untap trick.
  • Role type: protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Shore Up gives target creature you control +1/+1, hexproof, and untaps it, saving Wraith from targeted removal or letting a tapped carrier block.
  • Timing: Hold for removal or surprise blocks; use offensively only when +1/+1 changes lethal or the untap changes crack-back math.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs +1/+1, hexproof until end of turn, and untaps target creature you control.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith, Vicious Vigilante carrying Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Sigil of Sleep, or Ophidian Eye.
  • Role peers: Magic Damper has identical referenced text; Beaming Defiance sideboards a +2/+2 hexproof version; Blacksmith's Skill protects any permanent but does not untap.
  • Failure modes: Does not stop sacrifice, untargeted sweepers, or spells already resolving without targeting; untapping after attacking does not remove Wraith from combat.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus targeted removal and races where holding a blocker matters; less useful against creature spells that simply add board presence.

Defiant Strike

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, cantrip combat trick.
  • Role type: card selection; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Defiant Strike gives target creature +1/+0 until end of turn and draws a card, making a Wraith double-strike hit larger while replacing itself.
  • Timing: Best after blockers or during a safe combat step; cast precombat only when the draw could change a land or protection decision and the target is safe.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs +1/+0 until end of turn and one card drawn.
  • Partners / packages: Strong on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante because +1 power becomes two combat damage, and with Spirit Link or Steel of the Godhead because larger damage increases life gain.
  • Role peers: Guided Strike sideboards first strike plus draw; Rebellious Strike sideboards +3/+0 plus draw; Moment of Triumph adds life instead of drawing.
  • Failure modes: Does not protect from removal unless damage math matters; casting into removal can lose the target before the card draw resolves.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good when pressure and hand flow both matter; less useful when the opponent threatens instant-speed removal and you need true protection.

Recommission

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, graveyard rebuild spell.
  • Role type: recursion.
  • Deck-specific job: Recommission returns a mana value 3 or less artifact or creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield, putting an additional +1/+1 counter on it if a creature enters this way.
  • Timing: Cast after removal when the returned card immediately blocks, carries Equipment, restores Wraith pressure, or recovers an important artifact.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs target artifact or creature card with mana value 3 or less from graveyard to battlefield, with a +1/+1 counter if it is a creature.
  • Partners / packages: Can return Wraith, Vicious Vigilante if in graveyard and legal for the format state, plus Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Tandem Lookout, Saiba Cryptomancer, Drift of Phantasms, Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Armory of Iroas, Goggles of Night, Kor Halberd, Amorphous Axe, Darksteel Axe, Dúnedain Blade, Strider Harness, or Utility Knife.
  • Role peers: Sentinel's Eyes and Lightwheel Enhancements recur themselves under their own conditions; commander recast rebuilds Wraith from command zone instead.
  • Failure modes: Cannot return Auras such as Ethereal Armor or Steel of the Godhead; sorcery timing can be too slow against lethal pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against destroy-heavy attrition; weak against exile removal and graveyard hate.

Karametra's Blessing

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, premium enchanted-creature protection trick.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Karametra's Blessing gives target creature +2/+2, and if it is enchanted or an enchantment creature it also gains hexproof and indestructible until end of turn.
  • Timing: Hold until Wraith or the backup carrier is enchanted, then use it to punish targeted removal, combat, or lethal races.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs +2/+2 to target creature and conditional hexproof plus indestructible if the target is enchanted.
  • Partners / packages: Turns on fully with Wraith carrying Hyena Umbra, Spirit Link, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Sigil of Sleep, Sentinel's Eyes, Vanishing, Cartouche of Knowledge, or Spectral Flight.
  • Role peers: Blacksmith's Skill protects any permanent but has no +2/+2 for Wraith; Shore Up gives hexproof and untap; Adamant Will gives +2/+2 and indestructible without hexproof.
  • Failure modes: On an unenchanted Wraith it is only +2/+2, so do not rely on hexproof or indestructible unless an Aura is attached.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against targeted removal once the first Aura lands; weaker before an enchantment is established.

You Come to a River

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, modal tempo and unblockable trick.
  • Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: You Come to a River either returns target nonland permanent to its owner's hand or gives a target creature +1/+0 and can't be blocked this turn.
  • Timing: Use Fight the Current to remove a blocker, opposing threat, or problematic nonland permanent at instant speed; use Find a Crossing when one unblockable hit triggers lethal, draw, Treasure, or Sigil of Sleep.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs either bounce on target nonland permanent or temporary +1/+0 and unblockable on target creature.
  • Mode map: Fight the Current targets a nonland permanent and returns it to owner's hand; Find a Crossing targets a creature and gives +1/+0 plus can't be blocked this turn.
  • Partners / packages: Find a Crossing is best with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante when extra unblockability is redundant but +1 double-strike damage matters, or with Goggles of Night, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, and Last Thoughts on backup carriers.
  • Role peers: Chains of Custody exiles while attached; Sigil of Sleep bounces creatures after player damage; Acrobatic Leap sideboards flying plus untap instead of unblockable.
  • Failure modes: Bounce is temporary and can replay enter-the-battlefield threats; the unblockable mode does not protect from removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against single blockers and tempo mirrors; less useful against wide boards unless one permanent decides the race.

Magic Damper

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, one-mana creature protection and untap trick.
  • Role type: protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Magic Damper gives target creature you control +1/+1, hexproof, and untaps it, functioning as another Shore Up for Wraith turns.
  • Timing: Hold for targeted removal or when untapping Wraith after attacking prevents a lethal crack-back; cast for damage only when it changes the clock.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs +1/+1, hexproof until end of turn, and untap for target creature you control.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith, Vicious Vigilante and stacks involving Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Sigil of Sleep, Ophidian Eye, or Equipment.
  • Role peers: Shore Up has the same referenced effect; Beaming Defiance is sideboarded +2/+2 plus hexproof; Turn Aside counters the targeting spell rather than protecting the creature directly.
  • Failure modes: Does not protect Auras or Equipment directly, and does not stop edicts, sweepers, or non-targeted combat pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong into spot removal and combat races; low impact against creature-light combo if no target is being threatened.

Cartouche of Knowledge

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, evasion aura and card replacement.
  • Role type: card selection; protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Cartouche of Knowledge enchants a creature you control, draws a card on entry, and gives +1/+1 plus flying so a backup carrier can connect or Wraith can gain size and card flow.
  • Timing: Cast when the target is likely to survive and flying matters, or when replacing the card helps find protection before a bigger commitment.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs one card drawn, an Aura, +1/+1, and flying.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Tandem Lookout, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Ophidian Eye, and Sigil of Sleep.
  • Role peers: One With the Wind and Spectral Flight give +2/+2 flying without drawing; Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae grants temporary flying via adventure; Acrobatic Leap sideboards instant flying.
  • Failure modes: Can only enchant a creature you control; if the creature is removed in response, the Aura fails and the draw does not happen.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against ground stalls; less useful when Wraith already cannot be blocked and protection is the bottleneck.

Mammoth Umbra

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, expensive resilience and size aura.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Mammoth Umbra gives +3/+3, vigilance, and umbra armor, making Wraith or a backup carrier large and destruction-resistant for long races.
  • Timing: Cast only when five mana does not abandon Counterspell, Turn Aside, Blacksmith's Skill, or Karametra's Blessing, or when the immediate attack stabilizes the game.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {4}{W} and an Aura target; outputs +3/+3, vigilance, and umbra armor.
  • Partners / packages: Best on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante with Spirit Link, Steel of the Godhead, Ethereal Armor, and All That Glitters because vigilance and size support both attack and defense.
  • Role peers: Hyena Umbra and Eel Umbra are cheaper umbra armor; Take Up the Shield gives one-turn indestructible and lifelink; Sentinel's Eyes gives cheaper vigilance.
  • Failure modes: Five mana is a severe tempo cost; umbra armor does not stop exile, bounce, sacrifice, or -N/-N.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong when destroy effects and combat dominate; weak against tempo bounce and counterspell decks where tapping out is punished.

Goggles of Night

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, equipment card-flow engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Goggles of Night turns combat damage to a player into scry 1, then draw a card, helping the deck find protection and more pressure after Wraith or an evasive carrier connects.
  • Timing: Equip when a hit is likely and the game is about cards; do not spend {2} equip into a board where the creature cannot connect.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}{U}; equip {2}; outputs scry 1 then draw a card on combat damage to a player by equipped creature.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, You Come to a River, Goldvein Pick, and Prying Blade.
  • Role peers: Ophidian Eye draws from damage to an opponent and has flash; Tandem Lookout draws from damage to an opponent through soulbond; Last Thoughts draws with cipher.
  • Failure modes: No card is gained without combat damage to a player; equip cost can crowd out protection mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in stable attrition games; weak against aggro and removal-heavy decks where survival matters before card flow.

Kor Halberd

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, cheap vigilance equipment.
  • Role type: threat/clock; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: Kor Halberd gives +1/+1 and vigilance, letting Wraith attack while staying available to block and adding two double-strike damage.
  • Timing: Cast and equip on turns where the vigilance changes crack-back math or the power changes the clock without spending shield mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {W}; equip {1}; outputs +1/+1 and vigilance.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, All That Glitters, Battlefield Improvisation, and Greatsword of Tyr.
  • Role peers: Sentinel's Eyes gives the same stat/vigilance profile as an Aura with escape; Utility Knife auto-attaches on entry; Bone Saw is cheaper to cast but no vigilance.
  • Failure modes: Does not grant protection or evasion; equip {1} still matters when one mana must stay open for Blacksmith's Skill or Karametra's Blessing.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better against creature races where blocking after attacking matters; less important against control.

Amorphous Axe

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, high-power equipment role player.
  • Role type: threat/clock; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Amorphous Axe gives +3/+0 and makes the equipped creature every creature type, primarily converting Wraith's double strike into six extra damage.
  • Timing: Equip only when the attack is safe and {3} equip does not strand protection; deploy before the carrier when expecting removal so the artifact remains after a creature dies.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {2}; equip {3}; outputs +3/+0 and every creature type on the equipped creature.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, All That Glitters, and Battlefield Improvisation.
  • Role peers: Bonesplitter and Darksteel Axe give +2/+0 with cheaper or sturdier profiles; Dúnedain Blade gives +2/+1 and cheap Human equip for Wraith.
  • Failure modes: Equip {3} is clunky and provides no toughness, evasion, or protection; creature-type text rarely matters here except for unusual runtime effects.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good when one huge hit ends the game; poor when mana must remain open every turn.

Darksteel Axe

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, durable power equipment.
  • Role type: threat/clock; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Darksteel Axe gives +2/+0 and is indestructible, providing reusable power that survives most destroy effects and keeps All That Glitters artifact count stable.
  • Timing: Cast early into removal-heavy games; equip when Wraith can attack or when a backup carrier must trade up.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}; equip {2}; outputs +2/+0 and an indestructible artifact permanent.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, All That Glitters, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Battlefield Improvisation, and Recommission if it somehow reaches the graveyard.
  • Role peers: Bonesplitter gives the same power with cheaper equip but lacks indestructible; Bone Saw is faster but smaller; Utility Knife auto-attaches once.
  • Failure modes: Indestructible protects the Equipment, not the creature; equip {2} can still lose tempo into creature removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against artifact destruction that says destroy and creature removal attrition; less relevant against exile, bounce, or sacrifice.

Lightwheel Enhancements

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, recursive vigilance aura with speed condition.
  • Role type: recursion; threat/clock; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Lightwheel Enhancements starts your engines, gives enchanted creature or Vehicle +1/+1 and vigilance, and can be cast from graveyard once max speed is reached.
  • Timing: Cast early when vigilance matters and repeated opponent life loss is likely; graveyard casting only matters after speed reaches 4.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W} and target creature or Vehicle; outputs speed start if you have no speed, +1/+1, vigilance, and a future graveyard-cast permission at max speed.
  • Mode map: Normal cast uses hand and starts speed; max-speed graveyard access lets you cast Lightwheel Enhancements from graveyard, but only after your speed is 4.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante because unblockable double strike can make an opponent lose life on your turns to raise speed; also counts for Ethereal Armor and All That Glitters.
  • Role peers: Sentinel's Eyes gives +1/+1 vigilance with escape; Kor Halberd gives reusable equipment vigilance; Dig Site Inventory gives a counter and temporary vigilance.
  • Failure modes: If you stop damaging opponents on your turns, speed progress stalls; graveyard recursion is unavailable before max speed.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in games where Wraith connects repeatedly; weaker when removal prevents steady life loss.

Forge of Heroes

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, colorless utility land for commander counters.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Forge of Heroes adds {C} or puts a +1/+1 counter on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante if Wraith entered this turn and is a creature.
  • Timing: Use the counter ability the turn Wraith enters if it does not cost needed colored mana; otherwise treat Forge as colorless mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for {C}; or taps to choose target commander that entered this turn and put a +1/+1 counter on it if it is a creature.
  • Partners / packages: Counter stacks with Greatsword of Tyr, Armory of Iroas, Take Up the Shield, Dig Site Inventory, and Wraith's double strike.
  • Role peers: Dig Site Inventory also puts a +1/+1 counter on a creature; Path of Ancestry and Command Tower provide colored commander identity mana.
  • Failure modes: Does not cast Wraith by itself because Wraith needs {W}{U}; counter ability only targets a commander that entered this turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong when commander tax makes each Wraith recast a major investment; weak in color-tight openers.

Hidden Strings

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, cipher tempo and mana-recovery spell.
  • Role type: engine piece; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Hidden Strings taps or untaps up to two target permanents, then can encode on Wraith or another creature so future combat damage repeats the tap/untap effect.
  • Timing: Cast precombat to tap blockers or untap mana sources for protection; encode only on a creature likely to deal combat damage to a player.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs tap/untap choices for one or two target permanents, then may exile itself encoded on a creature you control.
  • Mode map: Immediate spell taps or untaps target permanent, then may tap or untap another target permanent; Cipher exiles Hidden Strings encoded on a creature so that creature's combat damage to a player lets its controller cast a copy for no mana.
  • Partners / packages: Best encoded on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante; can untap Island, Plains, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, Skybridge Towers, North Pole Gates, University Campus, Abandoned Campground, or Forge of Heroes after combat.
  • Role peers: You Come to a River removes or bypasses blockers once; Greatsword of Tyr taps a defending creature on attack; Last Thoughts uses cipher for cards instead of mana/tempo.
  • Failure modes: Cipher does nothing if the encoded creature stops connecting; targeting your lands before combat can be weaker than holding open natural protection.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in tempo races and board stalls; weaker against instant-speed removal that kills the encoded carrier.

Tandem Lookout

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, card-draw creature and backup carrier.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Tandem Lookout can pair with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante so each paired creature has a damage-to-opponent draw trigger, turning Wraith's hits into card advantage.
  • Timing: Cast when Wraith or another unpaired creature is present or soon available; avoid exposing it in combat unless the draw engine is already online or blocking is necessary.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{U}; outputs a 2/1 body with soulbond and damage-to-opponent draw ability while paired.
  • Partners / packages: Best paired with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante; also works with Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Aven Squire, Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, or Spectral Flight when a backup creature can connect.
  • Role peers: Ophidian Eye gives a similar draw trigger as an Aura; Goggles of Night draws on combat damage; Last Thoughts uses cipher.
  • Failure modes: Soulbond needs another unpaired creature, and the 2/1 body is fragile; no card is drawn unless a paired creature damages an opponent.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in slower games with safe connections; sideboard down or preserve as a blocker against fast removal-heavy pressure.

Last Thoughts

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, cipher card-flow spell.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Last Thoughts draws a card once, then can encode on Wraith or another connector to draw more cards after combat damage to a player.
  • Timing: Cast when four mana is available without giving up needed protection and the encoded creature is likely to connect.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {3}{U}; outputs one card drawn and optional cipher encoding on a creature you control.
  • Mode map: Cast mode draws one card; Cipher mode exiles Last Thoughts encoded on a creature, and that creature's combat damage to a player lets its controller cast a copy without paying its mana cost.
  • Partners / packages: Best on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante because Wraith can't be blocked; also needs One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, or You Come to a River on backup carriers.
  • Role peers: Ophidian Eye and Tandem Lookout are cheaper repeatable draw engines; Goggles of Night adds scry then draw through Equipment.
  • Failure modes: Four mana sorcery-speed setup is slow, and losing the encoded creature ends the future value.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in grindy games after Wraith is protected; poor against aggro or removal decks where four mana must protect or stabilize.

Adamant Will

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, combat and destroy-protection trick.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Adamant Will gives target creature +2/+2 and indestructible until end of turn, letting Wraith survive destroy effects or win combat while increasing double-strike damage.
  • Timing: Use in response to destruction, after blockers, or for lethal math; avoid precombat use unless the opponent is tapped out or lethal is certain.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs +2/+2 and indestructible until end of turn.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Spirit Link, Steel of the Godhead, Ethereal Armor, and All That Glitters.
  • Role peers: Take Up the Shield adds a permanent counter and lifelink; Crumb and Get It can grant indestructible if gifted; Karametra's Blessing may add hexproof when the creature is enchanted.
  • Failure modes: Does not grant hexproof, so targeted exile or bounce can still work; indestructible does not stop sacrifice or -N/-N.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against combat and destroy removal; weaker against control decks relying on bounce or exile.

Saiba Cryptomancer

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, flash protection body and emergency carrier.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Saiba Cryptomancer can flash in, use backup 1 to put a +1/+1 counter on Wraith or another creature, and if it targets another creature, that creature gains hexproof until end of turn.
  • Timing: Hold for a removal window or surprise combat math; cast as a body only when a carrier or blocker is needed and protection timing is not likely.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs a 0/1 flash creature with hexproof, a +1/+1 counter from backup 1, and temporary hexproof to another backed-up creature.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith, Vicious Vigilante and works with Armory of Iroas, Greatsword of Tyr, Take Up the Shield, Dig Site Inventory, and Forge of Heroes as counter support.
  • Role peers: Shore Up and Magic Damper give one-mana hexproof plus untap; Beaming Defiance sideboards +2/+2 and hexproof; Blacksmith's Skill protects any permanent.
  • Failure modes: Backup targets a creature as the trigger resolves; if no meaningful creature is present, Saiba is only a small hexproof body.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against targeted removal and ambush combat; weak against edicts and sweepers that ignore hexproof.

Battlefield Improvisation

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, attacking-creature pump and equipment reposition trick.
  • Role type: threat/clock; modal utility; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Battlefield Improvisation gives target creature +2/+2 and, if that creature is attacking, may attach any number of Equipment you control to it for a surprise Wraith burst.
  • Timing: Best after attackers are declared when Wraith attacks and unattached Equipment such as Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, or Golem-Skin Gauntlets can move without equip costs.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs +2/+2 and conditional attachment of any number of Equipment you control to the attacking target.
  • Mode map: Nonattacking use is only +2/+2; attacking use adds the option to attach Equipment you control to that creature.
  • Partners / packages: High ceiling with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante plus Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Greatsword of Tyr, Armory of Iroas, Goggles of Night, Kor Halberd, Amorphous Axe, Darksteel Axe, Dúnedain Blade, Strider Harness, and Utility Knife.
  • Role peers: Dúnedain Blade and Utility Knife reduce equip friction in other ways; Arrester's Zeal and Archon's Glory are pump tricks with evasion or lifelink conditions.
  • Failure modes: Does not protect from removal unless +2/+2 saves from damage; if the creature is removed in response, the equipment move fails.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong for surprise lethal and mana-efficient re-equipping after removal; weaker against open instant-speed removal.

Dúnedain Blade

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, Human-efficient equipment.
  • Role type: threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Dúnedain Blade gives +2/+1 and equips Humans for {1}, making Wraith, Vicious Vigilante cheaper to suit up because Wraith is a Human.
  • Timing: Prefer equipping Wraith for {1}; use regular equip {3} on non-Human backup carriers only when the damage matters and mana is available.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}{W}; equip Human {1}; equip {3}; outputs +2/+1.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Tandem Lookout, Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast, Ethercaste Knight, Akrasan Squire, and Golem-Skin Gauntlets.
  • Role peers: Bonesplitter gives +2/+0 with equip {1} to anyone; Kor Halberd gives +1/+1 vigilance; Amorphous Axe gives +3/+0 with expensive equip.
  • Failure modes: Non-Human equip {3} is slow; the card gives no evasion or protection.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in Wraith-centric games; less efficient when the only available carrier is Aven Squire, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, or Saiba Cryptomancer.

Akrasan Squire

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, one-mana exalted support and backup carrier.
  • Role type: role glue; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Akrasan Squire adds exalted to Wraith's lone attacks and gives the deck a one-mana Human Soldier carrier for early equipment when commander timing is delayed.
  • Timing: Cast early when the hand needs a creature; keep it back if its exalted trigger is worth more than one point of chip damage.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs a 1/1 Human Soldier with exalted.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Wraith, Vicious Vigilante as the primary lone attacker; Aven Squire and Ethercaste Knight are the other exalted-style support bodies; Dúnedain Blade, Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, and Cartouche of Solidarity turn the cheap Human body into an emergency carrier when Wraith is delayed.
  • Role peers: Aven Squire costs more but flies; Ethercaste Knight costs {W}{U}, blocks better, and is an artifact.
  • Failure modes: Small body dies easily and should not carry premium auras unless Wraith is unavailable or commander tax is prohibitive.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in hands that need turn-one pressure; weaker against sweepers or pingers.

Ethercaste Knight

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, artifact exalted support and defensive backup carrier.
  • Role type: role glue; threat/clock; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Ethercaste Knight adds exalted for Wraith's lone attacks, blocks as a 1/3, and counts as an artifact for All That Glitters.
  • Timing: Cast when both colors are available and the deck wants a sturdier support body; avoid delaying Wraith if commander pressure is already protected.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}{U}; outputs a 1/3 artifact Human Knight with exalted.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Akrasan Squire, Aven Squire, All That Glitters, Dúnedain Blade, and Path of Ancestry if its creature type overlaps with Wraith's Human type when casting.
  • Role peers: Akrasan Squire is cheaper; Aven Squire flies; Tandem Lookout gives card draw instead of exalted.
  • Failure modes: Requires both colors on turn two, which can conflict with Counterspell or white protection; low power makes it a poor standalone clock.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against small attackers and artifact-count scaling; less ideal against fast combo where pressure must be faster.

Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, adventure evasion trick and small flyer.
  • Role type: modal utility; protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Gift of the Fae can give Wraith or a backup carrier +2/+1 and flying for a turn, then Faerie Guidemother can later be cast from exile as a 1/1 flying body.
  • Timing: Use the adventure when temporary flying changes a hit, trigger, or lethal; cast Faerie Guidemother first only when the deck needs a cheap evasive body more than the pump spell.
  • Inputs / outputs: Creature side consumes {W} for a 1/1 flyer; adventure side consumes {1}{W}, targets a creature, gives +2/+1 and flying until end of turn, then exiles the card for later creature casting.
  • Mode map: Faerie Guidemother is a small flying creature; Gift of the Fae is a sorcery Adventure that temporarily pumps and grants flying, then enables later creature casting from exile.
  • Partners / packages: Adventure mode helps Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Goggles of Night, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, and Sigil of Sleep connect on non-Wraith carriers.
  • Role peers: One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, and Cartouche of Knowledge provide permanent flying; Acrobatic Leap sideboards instant flying and untap.
  • Failure modes: Gift of the Fae is sorcery-speed, so it cannot surprise blockers; Wraith already cannot be blocked, making flying often redundant there.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against ground stalls with backup carriers; less important when Wraith is active and unblockable.

Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, adventure Role-token support and backup body.
  • Role type: modal utility; protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Betroth the Beast is the efficient side here: for {W}, it makes Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or a backup carrier larger and harder to target before the deck commits premium auras or equipment. Besotted Knight is the later 3/3 Human Knight body for games where Wraith is taxed, answered, or the deck needs another Human to carry Dúnedain Blade and combat enhancements.
  • Timing: Cast Betroth the Beast before the important attack when ward {1} taxes the opponent's visible removal mana or when +1/+1 changes the clock. Cast Besotted Knight after the Adventure, or straight as a 3/3 body, only when board material is worth more than immediately improving the active carrier.
  • Inputs / outputs: Betroth the Beast consumes {W}, targets a creature you control, and outputs a Royal Role Aura token with +1/+1 and ward {1}. Besotted Knight consumes {3}{W} and outputs a 3/3 Human Knight body that can use Dúnedain Blade's Human equip discount.
  • Mode map: Adventure mode is the protection/clock mode for Wraith, Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Tandem Lookout, or another current carrier. Creature mode is the backup-threat mode when commander tax or removal means the deck needs another body rather than another Aura on the same creature.
  • Partners / packages: Royal Role works best on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante before Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, or Ophidian Eye commitments.
  • Role peers: Cartouche of Solidarity creates an Aura plus token; Chains of Custody grants ward {2} while removing a nonland permanent; Benevolent Blessing gives protection from a chosen color.
  • Failure modes: Spending the Adventure on a replaceable body before Wraith is ready can waste the ward shield; casting the 3/3 creature side into open removal can strand the better Adventure line in exile timing. Do not treat the Role token as protection against sweepers, edicts, or blockers.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Ward {1} matters against targeted interaction with tight mana; less relevant against sweepers, edicts, or opponents with excess mana.

Arrester's Zeal

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, one-mana pump with main-phase evasion option.
  • Role type: modal utility; threat/clock; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Arrester's Zeal gives +2/+2, and if cast during your main phase, also gives flying, letting a backup carrier connect or Wraith hit harder.
  • Timing: Cast during main phase only when flying is needed and removal risk is acceptable; otherwise hold as an instant pump after blockers.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs +2/+2 until end of turn, plus flying if cast during your main phase.
  • Mode map: Non-main-phase cast is surprise +2/+2; main-phase addendum cast adds flying but gives the opponent more information before combat.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante for double-strike damage or with Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Goggles of Night, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, and Last Thoughts on a backup carrier needing flying.
  • Role peers: Archon's Glory can add flying and lifelink if bargained; Acrobatic Leap sideboards flying plus untap; Defiant Strike draws instead of granting flying.
  • Failure modes: Main-phase casting walks into removal; flying is redundant on Wraith if unblockable is already enough.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Useful against ground stalls and lethal races; poor against instant-removal decks without protection backup.

Strider Harness

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, haste and stat equipment.
  • Role type: threat/clock; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Strider Harness gives +1/+1 and haste, letting a newly cast Wraith or backup carrier attack immediately when the equip line is legal.
  • Timing: Deploy before a commander recast if haste will matter; equip for {1} on the turn Wraith enters when immediate pressure outweighs holding protection mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {3}; equip {1}; outputs +1/+1 and haste.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante after commander tax, Recommissioned creatures, and Golem-Skin Gauntlets as another attached Equipment.
  • Role peers: Utility Knife attaches on entry but lacks haste; Kor Halberd gives +1/+1 vigilance; Greatsword of Tyr adds counters on attacks.
  • Failure modes: Three-mana setup is slow, and haste does not matter if the creature is already able to attack or cannot safely attack.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better against slow decks where surprise commander pressure matters; weaker in removal-heavy games that punish tapping out.

Archon's Glory

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, bargain pump and race trick.
  • Role type: modal utility; threat/clock; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: Archon's Glory gives +2/+2, and if bargained by sacrificing an artifact, enchantment, or token as you cast it, also gives flying and lifelink.
  • Timing: Use without bargain for simple combat math; bargain only when sacrificing a low-value artifact, enchantment, or token is worth flying plus lifelink this turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; optional bargain consumes an artifact, enchantment, or token; outputs +2/+2, plus flying and lifelink if bargained.
  • Mode map: No-bargain line is cheap pump; bargained line trades material for evasion and lifegain.
  • Partners / packages: Sacrifice candidates can include the Warrior token from Cartouche of Solidarity, Treasure from Goldvein Pick or Prying Blade, Food gifted by opponent effects if you control one, or low-impact attached/unattached permanents when legal and expendable.
  • Role peers: Arrester's Zeal grants flying if cast in main phase; Take Up the Shield grants lifelink and indestructible; Moment of Triumph sideboards pump plus life.
  • Failure modes: Sacrificing an Aura or Equipment can shrink Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, or Golem-Skin Gauntlets; do not bargain away key protection or scaling material.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in races where one lifelink hit matters; risky against removal if the opponent can answer after the bargain cost is paid.

One With the Wind

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, permanent flying aura.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: One With the Wind gives +2/+2 and flying, turning non-Wraith carriers into real threats and adding efficient size to Wraith.
  • Timing: Cast when the target can be protected or when flying creates an immediate connection; avoid using it as a naked aura into open removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U} and an Aura target; outputs +2/+2 and flying.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Tandem Lookout, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Ophidian Eye, Last Thoughts, and Sigil of Sleep when Wraith is unavailable.
  • Role peers: Spectral Flight has the same referenced effect; Cartouche of Knowledge gives smaller stats but draws; Gift of the Fae gives temporary flying.
  • Failure modes: Flying is redundant on Wraith if unblockability already handles blockers; provides no protection from removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against ground stalls; weaker against removal-heavy decks without Turn Aside, Hindering Light, or Karametra's Blessing.

Utility Knife

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, auto-attach equipment.
  • Role type: threat/clock; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Utility Knife attaches to target creature you control when it enters, giving an immediate +1/+1 without paying equip that turn.
  • Timing: Cast after Wraith or a backup carrier is present; later equip {3} is expensive and should be used only when the boost changes combat.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {1}; enter trigger attaches to target creature you control; equip {3}; outputs +1/+1.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, All That Glitters, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Battlefield Improvisation, and Recommission.
  • Role peers: Bone Saw costs {0} but needs equip {1}; Kor Halberd costs {W} and gives vigilance; Strider Harness gives haste.
  • Failure modes: If no creature is available, the auto-attach value is lost; equip {3} is inefficient later.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in creature-first hands; poor in hands with no safe carrier.

Spectral Flight

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, permanent flying aura.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Spectral Flight gives +2/+2 and flying, acting as another One With the Wind for backup carriers or efficient Wraith size.
  • Timing: Cast when flying opens a connection or when Wraith needs faster commander-damage math and protection is available.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U} and an Aura target; outputs +2/+2 and flying.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Tandem Lookout, Ophidian Eye, Last Thoughts, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Goggles of Night, and Sigil of Sleep on creatures that need combat damage.
  • Role peers: One With the Wind has the same referenced effect; Cartouche of Knowledge draws a card for smaller stats; Steel of the Godhead gives Wraith unblockable plus lifelink.
  • Failure modes: No protection text; casting into open removal can lose both creature and Aura.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best against ground boards and low-removal opponents; less valuable when Wraith's built-in unblockability already solves blocking.

Razortide Bridge

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, tapped indestructible artifact dual land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Razortide Bridge fixes {W}/{U}, counts as an artifact for All That Glitters, and survives destroy effects because it is indestructible.
  • Timing: Play early on turns where entering tapped does not cost Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Blacksmith's Skill, or Wraith timing.
  • Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped; taps for {W} or {U}; provides an indestructible artifact land permanent.
  • Partners / packages: Supports All That Glitters, Recommission cannot target it because it is a land card, and it casts Counterspell, Steel of the Godhead, Hindering Light, and Wraith.
  • Role peers: Command Tower is untapped fixing; Skybridge Towers and North Pole Gates draw later; University Campus surveils.
  • Failure modes: Tapped entry can lose tempo; artifact status can expose it to artifact exile or bounce even though destroy effects fail.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in slower games where permanent count matters; awkward in fast hands needing untapped colored mana.

Command Tower

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, untapped perfect commander-color mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Command Tower taps for one mana of any color in Wraith's color identity, giving untapped access to {W} or {U}.
  • Timing: Prioritize early when the hand needs both white protection and blue interaction; preserve it as the flexible source when paying mixed costs.
  • Inputs / outputs: Taps for {W} or {U} in this Wraith deck.
  • Partners / packages: Casts Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Counterspell support turns, Hindering Light, Steel of the Godhead, Karametra's Blessing, and Spell Pierce.
  • Role peers: Path of Ancestry fixes but enters tapped and can scry on shared creature type; Razortide Bridge fixes but enters tapped; Abandoned Campground may enter tapped.
  • Failure modes: Tapping it too early can strand either Turn Aside or Blacksmith's Skill depending on the remaining lands.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Important in every matchup, especially removal-heavy turns requiring mixed-color double-spell sequencing.

Path of Ancestry

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, tapped fixing land with occasional scry.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Path of Ancestry fixes Wraith colors and scries 1 when its mana is spent to cast a creature spell sharing a creature type with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante.
  • Timing: Play early on low-risk turns because it enters tapped; use its mana for Human creatures when possible if the scry matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped; taps for {W} or {U}; if that mana casts a creature sharing a type with Wraith, scry 1.
  • Partners / packages: Shared Human casts include Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Tandem Lookout, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, and Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast; Detective or Hero sharing depends on visible card types from current list and Wraith is the main relevant one.
  • Role peers: Command Tower is untapped without scry; University Campus surveils for {4}; Skybridge Towers and North Pole Gates can draw later.
  • Failure modes: Tapped entry can block one-mana protection; scry does not trigger for Aven Squire, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Drift of Phantasms, or Saiba Cryptomancer if they share no listed type with Wraith.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in slower games where scry improves draw quality; risky against fast starts.

University Campus

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, tapped dual land with late surveil.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: University Campus fixes {W}/{U} and later surveils 1 to filter toward protection, evasion, or action.
  • Timing: Play on low-pressure turns; activate surveil only when {4} and tapping the land will not cost protection or interaction.
  • Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped; taps for {W} or {U}; activated ability consumes {4} and tap to surveil 1, looking at the top card and optionally putting it into graveyard.
  • Partners / packages: Helps cast Wraith, Counterspell, Muddle the Mixture, Steel of the Godhead, and Karametra's Blessing; surveil can place Sentinel's Eyes or Lightwheel Enhancements in the graveyard if their recast conditions matter.
  • Role peers: Skybridge Towers and North Pole Gates draw by sacrificing; Path of Ancestry scries on shared creature casts.
  • Failure modes: Surveil is not card draw and can be too slow; placing a card in graveyard may remove a needed land drop or action if judged poorly.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in attrition games; poor when tapped mana slows early survival.

North Pole Gates

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, tapped Azorius mana resource with late draw.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: North Pole Gates fixes {W}/{U} and can be sacrificed later for a card when land count is high enough.
  • Timing: Play early only if tapped entry is acceptable; sacrifice for a card when losing the land will not prevent Wraith recast, equip, or protection.
  • Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped; taps for {W} or {U}; activated ability consumes {4}, tap, and sacrifice North Pole Gates to draw a card.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Counterspell, Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Steel of the Godhead, Hindering Light, and You Come to a River.
  • Role peers: Skybridge Towers draws for {2}{W}{U} plus sacrifice; University Campus surveils without sacrificing; Razortide Bridge adds artifact count.
  • Failure modes: Tapped entry can cost early tempo; sacrifice draw can reduce colored source count in commander-tax games.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in slow matches where extra cards matter; risky against aggro if it delays early plays.

Dig Site Inventory

  • Deck role: Main, 1 copy, counter spell with flashback.
  • Role type: recursion; threat/clock; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Dig Site Inventory puts a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control and gives vigilance until end of turn, then can be flashed back for the same effect.
  • Timing: Use before combat when the permanent counter changes Wraith's clock or vigilance changes defense; flash back when graveyard access and mana are available without exposing the carrier.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs a +1/+1 counter and temporary vigilance; flashback consumes {W} from graveyard, then exiles Dig Site Inventory.
  • Mode map: Hand cast uses a card from hand; flashback casts from graveyard for {W} and exiles the spell after resolution.
  • Partners / packages: Stacks counters with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Greatsword of Tyr, Armory of Iroas, Take Up the Shield, Forge of Heroes, and Saiba Cryptomancer.
  • Role peers: Sentinel's Eyes gives vigilance and recurs as an Aura; Lightwheel Enhancements gives vigilance and can recur at max speed.
  • Failure modes: Sorcery timing means it cannot answer removal in combat; flashback exiles it after use.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in attrition and creature races; lower priority when stack protection is required immediately.

Dispel

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, narrow instant-counter bullet.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: Dispel counters target instant spell, giving Wraith a cheap answer to instant-speed removal, bounce, burn, or counter wars after sideboarding.
  • Timing: Bring in when the opponent showed important instants; hold for the instant spell on the stack that kills the carrier, stops lethal, or wins a counter fight.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs a counter to target instant spell only.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith, Vicious Vigilante while committing Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Ophidian Eye, or Vanishing.
  • Role peers: Spell Pierce hits noncreature spells with a tax; Counterspell hits any spell; Intervene and Keep Safe protect through targeting restrictions.
  • Failure modes: Cannot counter sorceries, creatures, artifacts, enchantments, or abilities; dead against opponents whose interaction is mostly permanents or combat.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Add against instant-heavy control, burn, and tempo; avoid against creature swarms.

Intervene

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, creature-target protection bullet.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Intervene counters target spell that targets a creature, making it a one-mana sideboard shield for Wraith or another suited creature.
  • Timing: Bring in when the opponent's removal targets creatures; hold for the spell on the stack that targets Wraith or the current carrier.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs a counter to target spell that targets a creature.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith carrying Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Ophidian Eye, Sigil of Sleep, or Equipment.
  • Role peers: Turn Aside counters a spell targeting any permanent you control; Keep Safe protects a permanent you control and draws; Beaming Defiance gives hexproof instead of countering.
  • Failure modes: Does not counter spells targeting only an Aura, Equipment, player, or noncreature permanent; does not stop edicts or sweepers.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against spot-removal decks; poor against untargeted sacrifice and board wipes.

Keep Safe

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, protective cantrip counter bullet.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-stack; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Keep Safe counters target spell that targets a permanent you control and draws a card, trading two mana for protection plus hand stability.
  • Timing: Side in against spot removal or bounce; hold during key Wraith commitment turns when replacing the shield matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; outputs a counter to the targeting spell and draws one card.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith, Chains of Custody, Vanishing, Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, and equipment permanents if they are targeted.
  • Role peers: Hindering Light also draws but covers spells targeting you or your permanent and costs {W}{U}; Turn Aside is cheaper with no draw.
  • Failure modes: Two mana can be too slow on early turns; cannot answer untargeted effects or spells that target only creatures you do not control.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in attrition control matchups; weaker against aggro where mana must affect combat immediately.

Guided Strike

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, cantrip first-strike combat bullet.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; threat/clock; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Guided Strike gives target creature +1/+0 and first strike until end of turn, then draws a card, improving combat while replacing itself.
  • Timing: Bring in for creature mirrors; cast after blockers when first strike changes survival or trade math.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs +1/+0, first strike, and one card drawn.
  • Partners / packages: Strong on Wraith, Vicious Vigilante if first strike matters through damage assignment, and on backup carriers with Bonesplitter, Dúnedain Blade, or Ethereal Armor.
  • Role peers: Defiant Strike is cheaper and draws but lacks first strike; Rebellious Strike gives +3/+0 and draws; Moment of Triumph gives life instead of draw.
  • Failure modes: First strike is redundant if the creature already has first strike from Hyena Umbra, Ethereal Armor, or Cartouche of Solidarity; does not protect from noncombat removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Add against blocker-heavy combat decks; avoid against creature-light control.

Acrobatic Leap

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, instant flying and untap race bullet.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Acrobatic Leap gives target creature +1/+3, flying, and untaps it, helping a carrier connect or block after attacking.
  • Timing: Bring in against ground stalls and races; cast after attackers or before damage when flying or untap changes the combat step.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs +1/+3, flying, and untap for target creature.
  • Partners / packages: Helps Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Goggles of Night, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, and Sigil of Sleep connect on non-Wraith carriers.
  • Role peers: Arrester's Zeal can grant main-phase flying; Gift of the Fae grants sorcery-speed flying; Shore Up untaps and gives hexproof instead.
  • Failure modes: Flying may be redundant on Wraith because Wraith can't be blocked; does not grant hexproof or indestructible.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Add against ground creature boards; avoid against flyers, reach-heavy boards, or removal-heavy control.

Flare of Faith

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, Human-sensitive pump/protection bullet.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Flare of Faith gives target creature +2/+2, or if it is a Human, +3/+3 and indestructible until end of turn; Wraith is a Human.
  • Timing: Bring in for combat races and destroy-removal matchups; hold for Wraith survival or lethal double-strike damage.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs +2/+2, upgraded to +3/+3 and indestructible for Human targets.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Tandem Lookout, and Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast if its creature face is on board as a Human.
  • Role peers: Adamant Will gives +2/+2 and indestructible to any creature; Karametra's Blessing can give hexproof and indestructible to enchanted creatures.
  • Failure modes: Non-Human carriers such as Aven Squire, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Drift of Phantasms, or Saiba Cryptomancer receive only +2/+2.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Add when Wraith combat and destroy effects decide games; weak against exile, bounce, and edicts.

Rebellious Strike

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, cantrip burst-damage bullet.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; threat/clock; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Rebellious Strike gives target creature +3/+0 until end of turn and draws a card, turning Wraith's double strike into six extra damage while replacing itself.
  • Timing: Bring in when racing or shortening the clock matters; cast after blockers or in a protected lethal window.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs +3/+0 and one card drawn.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Spirit Link, Steel of the Godhead, and unblockable or flying backup carriers.
  • Role peers: Defiant Strike is cheaper but only +1/+0; Guided Strike adds first strike; Moment of Triumph adds life.
  • Failure modes: Adds no toughness, evasion, or protection; casting into open removal can lose the target before damage matters.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Add against races where one turn matters; avoid when the matchup is about protecting the carrier from removal.

Beaming Defiance

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, hexproof pump bullet.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Beaming Defiance gives target creature you control +2/+2 and hexproof until end of turn, protecting Wraith from targeted spells or abilities while increasing combat damage.
  • Timing: Bring in against targeted removal and bounce; hold for the stack window or combat step where losing the carrier would cost multiple attachments.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; outputs +2/+2 and hexproof until end of turn to target creature you control.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Wraith carrying Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Sigil of Sleep, Ophidian Eye, or Equipment.
  • Role peers: Shore Up and Magic Damper cost {U}, give +1/+1, hexproof, and untap; Karametra's Blessing can add indestructible for enchanted creatures.
  • Failure modes: Does not protect Auras or Equipment directly and does not stop sacrifice, sweepers, or non-targeted effects.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against spot removal; less useful against go-wide creature pressure without targeting.

Moment of Triumph

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, pump and life-race bullet.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; lifegain/stabilization; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Moment of Triumph gives target creature +2/+2 and gains you 2 life, helping Wraith win damage races without requiring an Aura.
  • Timing: Bring in against burn or aggro; cast after blockers or before damage when the pump and 2 life change survival or lethal math.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs +2/+2 to target creature until end of turn and 2 life to you.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, Spirit Link, Steel of the Godhead, and Take Up the Shield in race-focused games.
  • Role peers: Defiant Strike draws instead of gaining life; Archon's Glory can add lifelink if bargained; Take Up the Shield gives lifelink plus indestructible.
  • Failure modes: Does not protect from targeted removal unless toughness matters; 2 life may be irrelevant against commander damage or combo.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Add against burn and creature races; avoid against slow control if life total is not pressured.

Bonds of Faith

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, Human pump or non-Human containment Aura.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; modal utility; interaction-removal; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Bonds of Faith enchants a creature; if that creature is Human it gets +2/+2, otherwise it cannot attack or block.
  • Timing: Bring in against single large creatures or when Wraith needs another efficient Human pump; cast on opposing non-Humans to contain combat or on Wraith for damage.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W} and an Aura target; outputs either +2/+2 for a Human enchanted creature or attack/block restriction for a non-Human enchanted creature.
  • Mode map: Human line pumps Wraith, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Tandem Lookout, or Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast's creature face if present; non-Human line prevents the enchanted creature from attacking or blocking.
  • Partners / packages: On Wraith it adds four double-strike damage and counts for Ethereal Armor and All That Glitters; on opposing non-Human commanders it buys time for Wraith attacks.
  • Role peers: Chains of Custody answers any target nonland permanent temporarily; You Come to a River bounces a nonland permanent; Steel of the Godhead is a stronger Wraith aura but not removal.
  • Failure modes: Pumping an opposing Human is a disaster, and enchanting a non-Human does not stop abilities; Aura removal restores the creature.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Add against non-Human single-threat decks and Voltron mirrors; avoid against go-wide boards where one contained creature is not enough.

Interaction Priorities

  • Counter threats that invalidate the loaded carrier before fighting ordinary value. Use Counterspell, Muddle the Mixture, Spell Pierce, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Dizzy Spell, and Magic Damper first on spells or abilities that kill Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, remove the current aura stack, prevent combat damage, or create an unblockable race. Card text check required for Magic Damper and Dizzy Spell before treating either as exact permission in a given prompt.

  • Protect Wraith, Vicious Vigilante before protecting replaceable support creatures. Spend Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Take Up the Shield, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Benevolent Blessing, Eel Umbra, Hyena Umbra, Vanishing, or Adamant Will when the current carrier is carrying Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Ophidian Eye, Sigil of Sleep, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, or multiple equipment. Let Akrasan Squire, Aven Squire, Ethercaste Knight, Tandem Lookout, Drift of Phantasms, or Saiba Cryptomancer die if saving them consumes the only answer for the commander turn.

  • Bounce or neutralize blockers when they change the clock. Use You Come to a River, Chains of Custody, Sigil of Sleep, Hidden Strings, or Cartouche of Knowledge to clear a large blocker, tap down a key defender, or force damage through with Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, or Last Thoughts online. Card text check required for Chains of Custody, Hidden Strings, and Last Thoughts before relying on exact tap, exile, detain, cipher, or draw outcomes.

  • Ignore low-impact permanents when the race is already favorable. Do not spend Counterspell or a premium protection spell on small ground creatures, slow draw engines, or mana development if Wraith, Vicious Vigilante is evasive, lifelinking, or two attacks from lethal. Use tempo interaction on those cards only when they block the carrier, threaten commander tax, or enable a visible lethal swing.

  • Bait removal with equipment before committing premium auras. Cast Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, Utility Knife, Amorphous Axe, Dúnedain Blade, Kor Halberd, Adventuring Gear, or Strider Harness first when the opponent has open mana and no must-answer threat is on the stack. Commit Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Mammoth Umbra, or Ophidian Eye after the opponent taps down, after protection is available, or when waiting makes the race worse.

  • Change interaction posture by archetype pressure. Against creature swarms, prioritize Chains of Custody, You Come to a River, Cartouche of Knowledge, Sigil of Sleep, first-strike or toughness tricks, and lifegain from Spirit Link or Steel of the Godhead if legal. Against control or tempo, hold up Counterspell, Muddle the Mixture, Spell Pierce, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Blacksmith's Skill, and Karametra's Blessing before adding another aura. Against combo, counter setup pieces that win before combat matters and race with cheap equipment plus evasion instead of spending turns on slow value.

  • Treat discard and exile as matchup facts, not deck tools. This list has no main-deck discard plan, so do not search for discard actions unless the rules engine exposes one from an opponent effect. Use Chains of Custody or any exposed exile-like legal action only when it answers a blocker, attacker, or engine permanent that materially changes the next combat.

Combat And Trading Rules

  • Attack when the carrier advances the clock without losing the protection plan. Send Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or another enhanced creature when evasion from One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, Steel of the Godhead, Gift of the Fae, or a tap/bounce effect makes damage likely. Hold back when attacking exposes the only creature to a profitable block and no Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Mammoth Umbra, Blacksmith's Skill, Shore Up, Take Up the Shield, Karametra's Blessing, or Adamant Will is available.

  • Preserve the primary carrier over marginal damage. Do not trade Wraith, Vicious Vigilante for an opposing creature unless the exchange prevents lethal, removes a must-answer commander-equivalent threat, or is protected by totem armor, indestructible, protection, or a visible legal replacement effect. Trading an equipped Akrasan Squire, Aven Squire, Ethercaste Knight, or Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae is acceptable when Wraith can be recast and equipped next turn.

  • Use exalted-style support as damage, not as blockers, when racing. Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, and Ethercaste Knight are best when a single evasive attacker is already the plan; avoid throwing them into trades unless the life total is under immediate pressure or commander tax makes rebuilding too slow. Card text check required for exact exalted or bonus wording before counting lethal.

  • Block early only when the life swing matters more than material. Above 15 life, prefer taking small attacks if blocking would lose the only carrier, equipment holder, or Tandem Lookout/Ophidian Eye partner. Between 8 and 14 life, trade support creatures for attackers that shorten the clock or force awkward protection use. At 7 life or less, prioritize survival blocks and lifegain lines over preserving chip-damage engines.

  • Cast combat tricks after blockers whenever possible. Use Defiant Strike, Arrester's Zeal, Archon's Glory, Adamant Will, Take Up the Shield, Shore Up, Karametra's Blessing, Blacksmith's Skill, You Come to a River, Crumb and Get It, Battlefield Improvisation, or Lightwheel Enhancements after the opponent commits blocks or removal, not precombat, unless the legal action grants required evasion or immediate lethal. Card text check required for Crumb and Get It, Battlefield Improvisation, and Lightwheel Enhancements before assigning exact pump or protection value.

  • Make lifelink races explicit before spending protection. Spirit Link and Steel of the Godhead can justify attacking into damage races when the rules engine shows lifegain will resolve or remain attached. Do not assume lifegain beats commander damage, poison-like clocks, sacrifice effects, or noncombat combo pressure without visible proof.

  • Keep engine creatures out of combat unless the payoff is immediate. Tandem Lookout, Saiba Cryptomancer, Drift of Phantasms, and Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast should not be offered in combat if their body, adventure, or utility role is needed for future protection, draw, or blocking. Use them as attackers only when enhanced, evasive, or when the opponent cannot block profitably.

  • Rebuild after a failed attack by switching to reusable pressure. If the main aura stack dies, prioritize Recommission, Sentinel's Eyes, cheap equipment, and commander recast sequencing before committing another premium aura. If the opponent proves heavy on removal, win with smaller protected hits, treasure from Goldvein Pick or Prying Blade, and counters held up rather than all-in aura stacking.

Selection And Tutor Rules

  • Use transmute as a strategic tutor only when the turn can afford sorcery-speed setup. Dizzy Spell, Muddle the Mixture, and Drift of Phantasms can convert into cards with matching mana value if the rules engine exposes the legal transmute action; do not discard them when their body or counterspell role is needed for the current stack. Prioritize finding protection, evasion, or the missing carrier piece over generic card quantity.

  • Find the missing commander-plan component before extra damage. With a safe Wraith, Vicious Vigilante already available, selection should look for evasion, protection, or card-draw attachment before another power boost. With no safe carrier, prefer a playable creature or protection spell over Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Mammoth Umbra, or other high-commitment auras.

  • Sequence draw before land drop when the drawn card can change the land decision. Defiant Strike, Cartouche of Knowledge, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, Skybridge Towers cycling, University Campus, and Dig Site Inventory should be used before playing a land only when the legal action could reveal whether Island, Plains, Command Tower, Razortide Bridge, Path of Ancestry, North Pole Gates, Skybridge Towers, Abandoned Campground, or Forge of Heroes is needed this turn. Card text check required for Dig Site Inventory, Last Thoughts, North Pole Gates, and Abandoned Campground.

  • Treat combat-damage draw as a reason to clear blockers first. Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, Goldvein Pick, and Prying Blade become selection or resource engines only if damage connects, so use You Come to a River, Sigil of Sleep, Cartouche of Knowledge, Chains of Custody, Hidden Strings, or evasion auras before damage when the legal action improves connection. Card text check required for Chains of Custody and Hidden Strings before relying on exact tap, detain, exile, or cipher outcomes.

  • Bottom or decline low-impact selection when protection is missing. If a scry, surveil, or campus-style selection action appears, keep Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Muddle the Mixture, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Blacksmith's Skill, Shore Up, Karametra's Blessing, Take Up the Shield, Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Mammoth Umbra, or Benevolent Blessing above redundant equipment. Keep lands when commander tax, double-spell turns, or protection plus aura sequencing requires them.

  • Do not tutor for an aura when the opponent is representing removal and no protection is available. In that state, prefer Muddle the Mixture as interaction, Drift of Phantasms as a blocker, or Dizzy Spell as a cheap utility line if legal. Commit tutor resources to Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, or Ophidian Eye only when the stack is stable or waiting gives the opponent a faster clock.

Priority And Stack Rules

  • Hold priority interaction for spells that answer the carrier, break the race, or win before combat matters. Counterspell is the clean answer to any must-stop spell; Spell Pierce is strongest while the opponent is tapped low; Muddle the Mixture should counter an instant or sorcery that removes Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, stops lethal, or invalidates the main stack. Do not counter a slow permanent if the current board already presents a protected two-turn clock.

  • Use protection at the last legal window that still saves the target. Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Take Up the Shield, Adamant Will, Eel Umbra, Hyena Umbra, Mammoth Umbra, Vanishing, Benevolent Blessing, and Saiba Cryptomancer should answer visible removal, combat damage, bounce, or control effects targeting the carrier. Card text check required for exact protection, phase-out, hexproof, indestructible, and totem-armor outcomes.

  • Let harmless spells resolve when mana must protect the commander turn. Passing is correct when the stack contains a small creature, tapped land, or slow draw spell and the hand contains a premium answer for the opponent's likely removal. Spend Spell Pierce or Counterspell only if the spell changes the next combat, removes evasion, creates lethal pressure, or makes Wraith, Vicious Vigilante too expensive to rebuild.

  • Cast auras and equipment into open mana only with a plan for the response. Prefer Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, Utility Knife, Amorphous Axe, Dúnedain Blade, Kor Halberd, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, or Strider Harness before Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Ophidian Eye, Spirit Link, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, or Mammoth Umbra when the opponent can answer an aura stack. If protection is available, leave the needed mana open before adding the premium enchantment.

  • Use combat tricks after blockers or removal are declared unless the action grants required evasion. Defiant Strike, Arrester's Zeal, Archon's Glory, Adamant Will, Take Up the Shield, Shore Up, Karametra's Blessing, Blacksmith's Skill, You Come to a River, Crumb and Get It, Battlefield Improvisation, and Lightwheel Enhancements should normally wait for a committed block, targeted spell, or lethal calculation. Card text check required for Crumb and Get It, Battlefield Improvisation, and Lightwheel Enhancements.

  • Evaluate optional costs and triggers by mana left for protection. Pay extort-like, ward-like, equip-like, or pump-like optional costs only when the rules engine exposes them and paying does not strand Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Muddle the Mixture, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Blacksmith's Skill, or Karametra's Blessing. Decline value payments that prevent saving Wraith, Vicious Vigilante from a visible or likely response.

  • Use graveyard timing to rebuild without walking into open-stack punishment. Recommission and Sentinel's Eyes are recovery tools after the first carrier dies; cast them when the opponent is tapped down, when protection is available, or when waiting means losing the race. Do not spend stack interaction protecting a minor recursion target unless it immediately restores the commander clock or prevents lethal.

Sideboard Map

  • Sideboard posture: use the ten-card sideboard as a narrow role-tuning kit, not as a new deck. Wraith, Vicious Vigilante still wants a protected evasive carrier, a low-curve shield package, and enough pressure to make commander damage or repeated combat damage matter. Add sideboard cards when they strengthen that plan against the opponent's visible axis; reduce main-deck emphasis on slower equipment, uncertain text cards, or redundant pump when the matchup punishes tempo loss.

  • Dispel: add against instant-heavy control, instant-speed removal, counter wars, and decks that try to answer a stacked Wraith, Vicious Vigilante during aura, equip, or combat windows. It is weak against creature swarms, sorcery-speed edicts, enchantment removal, artifact removal, and board states where the opponent is tapping mostly for permanents. Its role changes from generic permission to stack-fight protection when Wraith, Vicious Vigilante already has Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Ophidian Eye, or a high-value equipment attached.

  • Intervene: add against decks where the primary danger is a spell targeting Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or another suited creature. It is poor against edicts, sweepers, sacrifice effects, untargeted combat pressure, and removal aimed at auras or equipment rather than creatures. Card text check required for exact target restriction before relying on it to protect noncreature permanents; treat it as creature-target protection until the rules engine exposes legal actions.

  • Keep Safe: add against spot-removal decks, bounce decks, and counterspell mirrors where protecting a permanent while drawing a card is worth two mana. It is weaker when the opponent's interaction does not target your permanents, when holding two mana slows the first meaningful Wraith, Vicious Vigilante attack, or when one-mana protection such as Turn Aside, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, or Hindering Light already covers the relevant stack. Its role changes into attrition support in long games because the draw helps rebuild after trading shields.

  • Guided Strike: add against creature mirrors where first strike or a small power boost can let Wraith, Vicious Vigilante attack through blockers or survive combat while replacing the card. It is weak against no-creature control, edict-heavy decks, and matchups where combat is decided by evasion rather than blocking. Card text check required for exact pump, first-strike, and draw details; use it only when the visible legal action improves combat math or keeps a carrier alive.

  • Acrobatic Leap: add when flying is the cleanest way to connect, especially against ground stalls, token blockers, or boards where One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, or Steel of the Godhead is not available. It is bad against reach-heavy boards, instant removal held open, or races where three mana for temporary evasion prevents protection. Card text check required for exact stat boost and evasion duration before treating it as lethal.

  • Flare of Faith: add in creature combat races and removal-light aggressive matchups when a protection or pump effect can swing one attack step. It is weak against stack-control decks, edict decks, and boards where the opponent can answer after the pump resolves. Card text check required; make the runtime decision from legal action text and visible combat math, not assumed lifegain or keyword text.

  • Rebellious Strike: add when a cheap combat trick that cantrips or improves damage helps maintain pressure without spending a full card. It is poor when blockers are irrelevant, when the opponent has open removal that punishes pump on the stack, or when the deck needs hard interaction more than damage. Card text check required for exact effect; treat it as conditional combat pressure unless Forge exposes a deterministic lethal action.

  • Beaming Defiance: add against targeted removal, bounce, and mid-combat targeting where a creature shield plus a stat change can protect Wraith, Vicious Vigilante. It is weaker against edicts, non-targeting sweep effects, and matchups where mana must stay open for Counterspell or Muddle the Mixture. Card text check required for exact protection keyword; do not assume it stops every color or permanent type.

  • Moment of Triumph: add against red or creature-heavy pressure where lifegain plus a pump effect can turn a race or survive damage. It is bad against control decks that ignore life totals until they answer the carrier, and against combo-like opponents where a small life swing does not change the decisive turn. Card text check required for exact pump and lifegain; treat it as race stabilization, not as hard protection.

  • Bonds of Faith: add when the opponent relies on one large creature or when an aura-based pump role is legal and tactically relevant for your own creature. It is weak against go-wide boards, sacrifice engines, bounce-heavy opponents, and boards where enchanting an opposing creature fails to answer the actual clock. Card text check required for Human and non-Human mode details; do not assume Wraith, Vicious Vigilante qualifies for the pump mode unless the engine makes that legal.

Anti-Instant Control Protection Plan Side in: Dispel; Keep Safe; Intervene Cut: Goggles of Night; Prying Blade; Last Thoughts

  • Plan use: choose this plan against decks showing many instants, counterspells, bounce spells, or targeted removal. The added cards increase stack density while reducing slower combat-damage engines that need connection before paying back. Keep Goldvein Pick over Prying Blade when mana development matters; prefer protecting one premium hit with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante over drawing slowly from a fragile setup.

Anti-Creature Race Combat Plan Side in: Guided Strike; Moment of Triumph; Acrobatic Leap; Beaming Defiance Cut: Goggles of Night; Last Thoughts; Magic Damper; Dig Site Inventory

  • Plan use: choose this plan when the opponent presents early attackers and combat math is deciding the game. The added cards help Wraith, Vicious Vigilante connect, survive, or win a race while reducing slower card-advantage tools and uncertain-text setup. Card text check required for Magic Damper and Dig Site Inventory before de-emphasizing them in any matchup where their legal actions are currently strong.

Anti-Single-Threat Board Plan Side in: Bonds of Faith; Beaming Defiance; Keep Safe Cut: Goggles of Night; Prying Blade; Magic Damper

  • Plan use: choose this plan against commander-centric, voltron, or single-large-creature opponents where one opposing body must be contained and your own carrier must survive targeted interaction. Bonds of Faith can act as pressure or containment only if the rules engine exposes the legal mode; Beaming Defiance and Keep Safe guard the carrier during the turn you commit an aura, equipment, or attack.

  • Add role cards: against removal-control, prioritize Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, and Beaming Defiance. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow connection rewards such as Goggles of Night, Prying Blade, and Last Thoughts when the opponent is likely to answer the carrier before damage.

  • Add role cards: against go-wide aggro, prioritize Moment of Triumph, Guided Strike, Acrobatic Leap, Flare of Faith, and Beaming Defiance. Reduce main-deck emphasis: expensive or delayed value pieces that do not block, prevent damage, create evasion, or protect Wraith, Vicious Vigilante in the current turn cycle.

  • Add role cards: against creature-light control, prioritize Dispel, Keep Safe, Intervene, and possibly Rebellious Strike only if card text and legal actions make it a low-cost pressure tool. Reduce main-deck emphasis: combat-only tricks whose legal text requires blockers or damage races that are not present.

  • Add role cards: against voltron or single-threat commanders, prioritize Bonds of Faith, Keep Safe, Beaming Defiance, and Intervene. Reduce main-deck emphasis: narrow equipment that adds damage without evasion or protection when the opponent's single threat is already racing faster.

  • Add role cards: against unknown decks, make minimal changes and favor flexible protection first. Dispel, Keep Safe, or Beaming Defiance are safer early inclusions than narrow combat cards because Wraith, Vicious Vigilante loses most games by losing the carrier at the wrong time. Delay broad role changes until public game information reveals whether the opponent is interacting on the stack, racing on board, or relying on one permanent.

Matchup Guidance

  • Aggro: keep hands that cast Wraith, Vicious Vigilante on time and either protect it or gain tempo immediately. Prioritize cheap stabilizers and carrier protection over slow connection engines; Spirit Link, Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Sentinel's Eyes, Steel of the Godhead, Cartouche of Solidarity, and Chains of Custody matter more than Last Thoughts or Goggles of Night when life total is under pressure. Add role cards: Guided Strike, Moment of Triumph, Acrobatic Leap, Flare of Faith, Beaming Defiance. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Dig Site Inventory, Last Thoughts, Goggles of Night, and Magic Damper when they do not affect the current combat step. Do not attack with a needed blocker unless the visible crack-back is survivable or the attack produces a decisive Wraith, Vicious Vigilante hit.

  • Control: force the opponent to answer one protected threat instead of spreading auras and equipment across expendable bodies. Commit All That Glitters, Ethereal Armor, Steel of the Godhead, Mammoth Umbra, or Spectral Flight only when mana remains for Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Muddle the Mixture, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Take Up the Shield, or Vanishing, unless waiting lets the control deck take over. Add role cards: Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, Beaming Defiance. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Moment-style combat-only cards if the opponent is not racing on board. Treat every tap-out aura turn as a commitment gate, not an automatic sequencing step.

  • Combo: race with evasive commander damage while holding stack interaction for the first visible decisive action. Counterspell and Muddle the Mixture are premium because they can answer a wider range of combo actions; Spell Pierce and Dispel are strongest before the opponent has excess mana; Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Intervene, and Keep Safe are narrower unless the combo uses targeted disruption against Wraith, Vicious Vigilante. Add role cards: Dispel, Keep Safe, Intervene only when public information shows relevant targets or instants. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow equipment such as Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Armory of Iroas, and Goggles of Night if they do not shorten the clock before the combo turn. Do not spend the last interaction on a low-impact spell unless the visible clock says there is no later turn.

  • Tempo: protect mana efficiency and avoid walking a single overloaded turn into bounce, tap effects, or cheap counters. Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, Utility Knife, Adventuring Gear, and Goldvein Pick can build pressure without risking a large aura stack all at once; Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Steel of the Godhead, and Acrobatic Leap are key when ground blockers create a tempo stall. Add role cards: Dispel, Keep Safe, Beaming Defiance, Rebellious Strike. Reduce main-deck emphasis: expensive plays that do not immediately protect, connect, or recover tempo. If the opponent leaves mana open, prefer adding equipment or passing with protection over casting the most punishable aura.

  • Midrange: make one evasive, protected Wraith, Vicious Vigilante larger than their board while denying profitable removal windows. Ethereal Armor and All That Glitters scale well with the deck's aura/equipment density, but they should be layered after totem armor, protection, or countermagic when the opponent has open mana. Chains of Custody and Bonds of Faith can matter against one important blocker or attacker only if Forge exposes a legal and tactically relevant mode. Add role cards: Beaming Defiance, Keep Safe, Bonds of Faith, Moment of Triumph. Reduce main-deck emphasis: narrow card-draw-on-hit tools when blockers or removal prevent safe connection.

  • Big mana: become the aggressor and tax their slow turns with commander damage before larger permanents dominate combat. Keep lower-curve hands with Wraith, Vicious Vigilante, evasion, and protection; do not keep reactive hands that only answer one spell while failing to pressure. Counterspell should be saved for the first stabilizing or game-turning spell visible from legal actions; Spell Pierce is strongest early and should not be held so long that it becomes ineffective. Add role cards: Dispel only if the opponent shows instant-based interaction; Keep Safe or Intervene only if removal is targeted. Reduce main-deck emphasis: lifegain tricks that do not change the damage race.

  • Graveyard: keep pressure primary because this deck is not built as graveyard hate. Recommission is your own recovery tool, not a reason to trade Wraith, Vicious Vigilante casually; protect the main carrier before planning recursion. If the opponent's graveyard engine is faster than commander damage, prioritize Counterspell, Muddle the Mixture, Spell Pierce, and fast evasion over slow value equipment. Add role cards: Dispel when graveyard actions are instant-heavy, Keep Safe when targeted removal protects their engine or disrupts yours. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow connection engines that fail to race. Do not assume hidden graveyard payoffs; respond only to public zones, legal actions, and visible stack objects.

  • Artifact/enchantment: expect board stalls and removal aimed at your auras or equipment, but do not invent removal from hidden information. All That Glitters and Ethereal Armor reward building a dense permanent base; however, a single answer to Wraith, Vicious Vigilante can still collapse the plan, so protection outranks marginal extra power. Against enchantment-heavy blockers or artifact creatures, evasion from One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, Steel of the Godhead, and Acrobatic Leap is often better than another ground-power equipment. Add role cards: Keep Safe, Intervene, Beaming Defiance, Bonds of Faith. Reduce main-deck emphasis: low-impact equipment when the opponent's permanents already invalidate ground combat.

  • Go-wide: stop measuring only largest-creature combat and count total visible crack-back damage before attacking. Flying and unblockable-style pressure from Cartouche of Knowledge, One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Steel of the Godhead, and Acrobatic Leap helps ignore small blockers, while Spirit Link, Moment of Triumph, Flare of Faith, and Take Up the Shield can swing races if legal text supports the current combat. Add role cards: Guided Strike, Acrobatic Leap, Flare of Faith, Moment of Triumph, Beaming Defiance. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Last Thoughts and Goggles of Night when connecting safely is unlikely. Do not take a chip-damage attack if it opens lethal or near-lethal retaliation.

  • Single-threat: answer or outsize the one opposing carrier while keeping Wraith, Vicious Vigilante protected from their interaction. Bonds of Faith, Chains of Custody, Sigil of Sleep, and Steel of the Godhead are important if legal action text confirms they affect the relevant creature or combat pattern. Add role cards: Bonds of Faith, Keep Safe, Beaming Defiance, Intervene. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Prying Blade, Goggles of Night, and other delayed rewards when the game is decided by one combat step. Preserve Counterspell for the threat, the protection spell, or the removal spell that decides the single-threat exchange.

  • Burn: treat life total as a hard resource and avoid paying tempo costs that delay lifelink or protection. Spirit Link, Steel of the Godhead, Take Up the Shield, Moment of Triumph, Flare of Faith, and Archon's Glory are relevant when legal actions show lifegain, protection, or combat swing potential; Card text check required for exact effects where uncertain. Add role cards: Moment of Triumph, Flare of Faith, Beaming Defiance, Dispel. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow draw and treasure-on-hit cards if they do not prevent damage or shorten the clock. Hold up Dispel, Spell Pierce, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, or Blacksmith's Skill when the opponent can point a lethal or carrier-killing spell at you or Wraith, Vicious Vigilante.

  • Removal-heavy: make every aura and equipment commitment pass a protection check before casting it. Lead with resilient or low-cost pieces such as Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Sentinel's Eyes, and Vanishing before exposing premium scaling cards; keep mana open for Counterspell, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Take Up the Shield, Saiba Cryptomancer, or You Come to a River when possible. Add role cards: Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, Beaming Defiance. Reduce main-deck emphasis: unprotected expensive auras and delayed hit-rewards in games where every carrier is answered. If Wraith, Vicious Vigilante has already been removed repeatedly, prioritize rebuilding with protection first and accept slower damage over another exposed commander-tax recast.

Specific Matchup Notes

  • General/archetype-only: revealed cards, public zones, stack objects, and Forge legal actions override every matchup assumption here. Treat the opponent as unknown until their plays identify pressure, removal, countermagic, go-wide combat, graveyard reliance, or a single large carrier; then shift from generic Voltron setup into the matching role from Matchup Guidance.

  • Versus fast creature pressure: race only after stabilizing the crack-back math. Priority targets are visible attackers that make Wraith, Vicious Vigilante unable to attack safely, blockers that invalidate evasion-free equipment lines, and stack actions that remove Spirit Link, Steel of the Godhead, Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, or the commander. Add role cards: Guided Strike, Acrobatic Leap, Flare of Faith, Moment of Triumph, Beaming Defiance. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Last Thoughts, Goggles of Night, Prying Blade, and other slow hit-reward cards when they do not affect the next combat.

  • Versus removal-heavy control or tempo: build Wraith, Vicious Vigilante only when a protection window exists or the opponent is tapped low enough for the legal-action context to justify committing. Priority targets are removal spells on the stack, edict-like effects when visible, and counter-wars over Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, or Vanishing. Add role cards: Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, Beaming Defiance. Reduce main-deck emphasis: expensive aura commitments without Hyena Umbra, Eel Umbra, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Take Up the Shield, Hindering Light, Turn Aside, or Counterspell support.

  • Versus big mana or slow engines: pressure first and hold narrow answers for stabilizing spells rather than ordinary setup pieces. Priority targets are stack actions that reset the board, blank commander damage, or create a larger clock than Wraith, Vicious Vigilante can beat. Add role cards: Keep Safe or Intervene only if targeted interaction appears; Dispel only if instant-speed interaction is public. Reduce main-deck emphasis: lifegain tricks and delayed draw engines when they slow the commander-damage clock.

  • Versus single-threat Voltron or aura mirrors: preserve interaction for the carrier exchange, not for marginal support permanents. Priority targets are the opposing carrier, protection aimed at that carrier, and auras or equipment that make combat unwinnable if they resolve. Add role cards: Bonds of Faith, Beaming Defiance, Keep Safe, Intervene. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Prying Blade, Goggles of Night, and other delayed rewards when one combat step decides the game.

  • Versus graveyard or recursion plans: keep Wraith, Vicious Vigilante attacking because this list has little dedicated graveyard control. Priority targets are visible graveyard-engine spells, recursion actions that return a blocker or threat, and removal that disrupts your clock. Add role cards: Dispel against instant-speed graveyard interaction; Keep Safe or Intervene when the game centers on targeted removal. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow connection engines that fail to race. Recommission is a recovery tool, not permission to trade the commander carelessly.

Risk Summary

  • Mana risk: two-color requirements plus many one-mana protection spells punish loose land sequencing. Prioritize Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, Skybridge Towers, North Pole Gates, University Campus, Island, and Plains choices around current legal actions, and avoid tapping the only relevant color before holding up Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, or Hindering Light.

  • Matchup risk: the deck can misrole between control and tempo if it waits too long. Against slow decks, failure to attack with a protected Wraith, Vicious Vigilante gives the opponent time; against fast decks, attacking without counting visible retaliation turns lifelink and protection into too-late resources.

  • Draw risk: Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, Goggles of Night, Goldvein Pick, and Prying Blade need safe connection or legal follow-through to matter. Do not choose a delayed card or Treasure plan over immediate evasion, protection, or survival when the board already threatens the commander.

  • Over-sideboarding risk: the sideboard is mostly combat and protection texture, so adding too many role cards can dilute the aura/equipment density that powers Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, and commander damage. Keep the main plan intact unless public information proves the matchup is about removal, racing, or one carrier.

  • Graveyard risk: the list has Recommission and Sentinel's Eyes recursion pressure but limited opposing graveyard disruption. Do not assume the deck can police graveyards; race, counter visible engine pieces, and use public information before spending interaction.

  • Sweeper/removal risk: stacking Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, Mammoth Umbra, One With the Wind, or Spectral Flight onto an unprotected carrier can lose multiple cards to one answer. Layer totem armor, Vanishing, instant protection, or countermagic before premium scaling when the opponent represents interaction.

  • Closer risk: Wraith, Vicious Vigilante is the cleanest closer, and repeated commander tax can strand expensive rebuilds. If commander recast is costly, rebuild with cheap equipment such as Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, Utility Knife, or Golem-Skin Gauntlets before exposing another aura-heavy line.

  • Interaction risk: Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Intervene, Keep Safe, and Dispel are narrow in different windows. Let Forge legal actions and stack text define whether each answer applies; never hold up a narrow spell as if it covers all removal, protection, or sweeper cases.

  • Sequencing risk: casting aura payoffs before evasion or protection can create a large creature that still cannot connect. Prefer the sequence carrier, protection layer, evasion, scalable damage, then hit-reward unless the current legal actions make a different line lethal or necessary for survival.

Test Feedback Checklist

  • Deciding factor: Identify the exact turn or decision that swung the game, then record whether it involved Wraith, Vicious Vigilante connecting, failing to connect, being answered, or being delayed by mana and protection sequencing.

  • Mulligans: Record whether opening hands had both colors, an early carrier plan, a protection piece such as Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Turn Aside, or Hindering Light, and a way to make combat matter through Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, One With the Wind, or Spectral Flight.

  • Mana: Note every turn where Island, Plains, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, Skybridge Towers, North Pole Gates, University Campus, Forge of Heroes, Abandoned Campground, or Dig Site Inventory changed the available line, especially when holding up Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Muddle the Mixture, or protection.

  • Velocity: Track whether Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, Goggles of Night, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Hidden Strings, Defiant Strike, or Cartouche of Knowledge created real follow-up decisions or sat stranded behind blockers, removal, or missing evasion.

  • Engine execution: Check whether Ethereal Armor and All That Glitters were cast after enough artifacts, enchantments, or protection were visible to justify the commitment, and whether Bone Saw, Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, Utility Knife, Goldvein Pick, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Armory of Iroas, Adventuring Gear, Greatsword of Tyr, Kor Halberd, Amorphous Axe, Dúnedain Blade, and Strider Harness supported a credible commander-damage clock.

  • Removal and disruption: Record whether Chains of Custody, Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Hindering Light, Magic Damper, Muddle the Mixture, Dizzy Spell, You Come to a River, and Sigil of Sleep answered the relevant public threat or were spent on low-impact windows.

  • Sideboard impact: For each post-board game, record whether Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, Guided Strike, Acrobatic Leap, Flare of Faith, Rebellious Strike, Beaming Defiance, Moment of Triumph, or Bonds of Faith had a visible legal-action window and whether the added role matched the opponent's public plan.

  • Closing: Ask whether the deck lost with lethal or near-lethal damage stranded because Wraith, Vicious Vigilante lacked evasion, protection, untap timing, or safe attack math.

  • Role accuracy: Record whether the pilot correctly played tempo against slow engines, control against fast pressure, and protection-first Voltron against removal-heavy opponents.

  • Mistakes: Mark any action where the pilot cast a premium aura before protection, tapped the only relevant color, attacked into a visible losing crack-back, passed with useful legal interaction, or used a narrow answer outside its real Forge-legal window.

  • Stranded cards: List every card stuck in hand for three or more turns, with the reason: missing color, missing target, unsafe board, no legal action, commander tax, or opponent pressure.

  • Overperformers and underperformers: Record whether specific cards won time, cards, damage, or protection, and separate real performance from games where the card was never drawn or never had a legal window.

First Tuning Questions

  • Protection quantity: Does the combined package of Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, Shore Up, Take Up the Shield, Adamant Will, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Eel Umbra, Hyena Umbra, Mammoth Umbra, Vanishing, Saiba Cryptomancer, and Benevolent Blessing produce enough protected commitment windows for Wraith, Vicious Vigilante?

  • Evasion quantity: Did One With the Wind, Spectral Flight, Cartouche of Knowledge, Steel of the Godhead, Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae, Acrobatic Leap, Guided Strike, and You Come to a River create enough safe connections, or did the deck build large creatures that could not attack profitably?

  • Mana base: Did the mix of Island, Plains, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Razortide Bridge, Skybridge Towers, North Pole Gates, University Campus, Forge of Heroes, Abandoned Campground, and Dig Site Inventory support early white protection plus blue stack interaction without too many tapped-land tempo losses?

  • Aggro plan: Against fast creature pressure, were Spirit Link, Steel of the Godhead, Moment of Triumph, Flare of Faith, Archon's Glory, Crumb and Get It, Cartouche of Solidarity, Aven Squire, Akrasan Squire, Ethercaste Knight, and Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast enough to stabilize before the commander clock mattered?

  • Control plan: Against removal or permission, did the deck need more sideboard emphasis on Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, Beaming Defiance, and Bonds of Faith, or did adding too many reactive cards reduce pressure too much?

  • Closer reliability: Did Wraith, Vicious Vigilante end games before commander tax became prohibitive, and did scaling cards such as Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Golem-Skin Gauntlets, Greatsword of Tyr, Armory of Iroas, Lightwheel Enhancements, and Mammoth Umbra justify their exposure risk?

  • Velocity package: Did Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Last Thoughts, Goggles of Night, Goldvein Pick, Prying Blade, Hidden Strings, and Defiant Strike improve decisions, or should future versions reduce main-deck emphasis on delayed rewards when blockers and removal are common?

  • Sideboard slots: Which of Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, Guided Strike, Acrobatic Leap, Flare of Faith, Rebellious Strike, Beaming Defiance, Moment of Triumph, and Bonds of Faith repeatedly lacked a matchup or legal-action window?

  • Role conflict: Did the deck lose because it tried to be control and tempo in the same turn cycle, such as holding Counterspell while missing a safe Wraith, Vicious Vigilante attack, or tapping out for equipment while needing protection mana?

  • Recovery plan: Did Recommission, Sentinel's Eyes, cheap equipment, and commander recasts rebuild after removal, or did aura-heavy lines leave too little material after one answered carrier?

Veles Tactical Policy

Policy: Keep A Two-Color Voltron Start

Priority: High Decision families: mulligan; pregame Cards: Wraith, Vicious Vigilante; Island; Plains; Command Tower; Path of Ancestry; Razortide Bridge; Skybridge Towers; North Pole Gates; University Campus; Abandoned Campground Phase windows: opening hand; mulligan bottom Runtime cues: prompt:mulligan; zone:opening hand Use when: the hand can produce white and blue by turn three and has either a carrier, Wraith access, protection, evasion, or a pump permanent. Avoid when: the hand has one land, no blue source with blue interaction, no white source with white auras/protection, or only expensive equipment/aura commitments. Instructions: Prefer hands that cast Wraith, Vicious Vigilante on schedule while preserving one cheap protection or interaction window. Bottom redundant slow equipment before lands, protection, and first pressure. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Deploy First Carrier Before Fragile Enhancements

Priority: Medium Decision families: priority; combat Cards: Wraith, Vicious Vigilante; Aven Squire; Akrasan Squire; Ethercaste Knight; Faerie Guidemother // Gift of the Fae; Besotted Knight // Betroth the Beast; Tandem Lookout; Saiba Cryptomancer Phase windows: main phase before combat; early turns Runtime cues: legal actions include casting a creature or commander Use when: no protected Wraith attack is available yet and a cheap creature can carry equipment, auras, or exalted pressure. Avoid when: holding up Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, or Hindering Light prevents an opponents visible high-impact turn. Instructions: Establish a body before stacking Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Steel of the Godhead, One With the Wind, or Spectral Flight. Prefer Wraith as the primary carrier when commander damage matters and recast mana is available. Pilot skill floor: low No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Commit Scaling Auras Only Through A Protection Gate

Priority: High Decision families: priority; interaction; combat Cards: Ethereal Armor; All That Glitters; Steel of the Godhead; One With the Wind; Spectral Flight; Cartouche of Knowledge; Cartouche of Solidarity; Spirit Link; Sigil of Sleep Phase windows: precombat main; postcombat main Runtime cues: legal actions include casting aura or enhancement targeting a creature Use when: the target creature can attack or block meaningfully this turn cycle and mana or cards can protect it from visible or likely interaction. Avoid when: the opponent has open mana and a public removal pattern while the pilot cannot respond with protection or permission. Instructions: Treat Ethereal Armor and All That Glitters as commitment cards, not filler. Cast smaller utility auras first only when they create immediate evasion, lifegain, draw, or bounce pressure. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Deterministic Aura Target On Wraith

Priority: Low Decision families: selection Cards: Wraith, Vicious Vigilante; Ethereal Armor; All That Glitters; Steel of the Godhead; One With the Wind; Spectral Flight; Spirit Link; Sigil of Sleep; Cartouche of Knowledge; Cartouche of Solidarity Phase windows: spell target prompt Runtime cues: action:target self Wraith, Vicious Vigilante Use when: the selected spell is already being cast and the legal action text names Wraith, Vicious Vigilante as the target. Avoid when: more than one legal action text names Wraith, Vicious Vigilante with different spell objects or modes. Instructions: Choose the action that targets Wraith, Vicious Vigilante after the cast line has been selected by model reasoning. Pilot skill floor: low No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Sequence Cheap Equipment Before Mana-Hungry Equips

Priority: Medium Decision families: mana; priority Cards: Bone Saw; Bonesplitter; Utility Knife; Darksteel Axe; Goldvein Pick; Prying Blade; Golem-Skin Gauntlets; Greatsword of Tyr; Kor Halberd; Armory of Iroas; Adventuring Gear; Amorphous Axe; Dúnedain Blade; Strider Harness; Goggles of Night Phase windows: main phase; equip prompts Runtime cues: legal actions include cast equipment or equip Use when: developing board pressure without exposing a key aura to removal. Avoid when: equipping consumes mana needed for Counterspell, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, Hindering Light, Blacksmith's Skill, Karametra's Blessing, or Shore Up. Instructions: Use equipment to create persistent pressure and recover after aura losses. Equip before combat only when the attack changes damage, evasion, treasure, draw, or survival math. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Hold Permission For Removal, Sweepers, And Race Breakers

Priority: High Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Counterspell; Spell Pierce; Muddle the Mixture; Hindering Light; Turn Aside; Magic Damper; Dispel; Intervene; Keep Safe Phase windows: opponent main; combat trick windows; end step Runtime cues: stack has opponent spell or ability; legal actions include counter or protect Use when: the stack object threatens Wraith, the main carrier, lethal pressure, a decisive blocker, or the pilots only path to continue attacking. Avoid when: the stack object is low impact and spending permission prevents a stronger response to visible mana or cards already known. Instructions: Counter removal targeting the stacked Voltron creature above generic value spells. Use Spell Pierce and Dispel before hard counters when the target type and tax window are legal. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Deterministic Counter Target On Opponent Removal

Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction Cards: Counterspell; Spell Pierce; Dispel; Turn Aside; Intervene; Keep Safe Phase windows: stack target prompt Runtime cues: action:target opponent Use when: one legal action targets the only opponent-controlled spell or ability currently on the stack and that stack object targets Wraith, Vicious Vigilante or the only enchanted/equipped pilot creature. Avoid when: two or more opponent stack objects are legal targets. Instructions: Select the legal target that is the opponent-controlled stack object threatening the protected creature. Pilot skill floor: low No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Spend Protection Before Losing The Carrier

Priority: High Decision families: interaction; combat Cards: Blacksmith's Skill; Karametra's Blessing; Shore Up; Take Up the Shield; Adamant Will; Eel Umbra; Hyena Umbra; Mammoth Umbra; Vanishing; Saiba Cryptomancer; Benevolent Blessing; Beaming Defiance; Flare of Faith; Moment of Triumph Phase windows: removal response; combat damage; declare blockers; end step Runtime cues: legal actions include protection, pump, phase-out, or aura with flash-like timing if Forge exposes it Use when: losing the carrier would remove multiple attached cards, stop commander damage, or create lethal crack-back. Avoid when: the carrier is replaceable and protection is needed for a later public lethal or survival window. Instructions: Protect Wraith first, then the most enhanced noncommander carrier. Treat Card text check required cards conditionally where exact prevention, ward, hexproof, indestructible, or phase-out text matters. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Attack Only Through Clock And Crack-Back Math

Priority: High Decision families: combat Cards: Wraith, Vicious Vigilante; Aven Squire; Akrasan Squire; Ethercaste Knight; Greatsword of Tyr; Armory of Iroas; Sigil of Sleep; Steel of the Godhead; Spirit Link Phase windows: beginning of combat; declare attackers Runtime cues: prompt:declare attackers; visible blockers; visible life totals Use when: attacking advances commander damage, lifegain stabilization, bounce pressure, treasure/draw equipment output, or lethal damage without exposing lethal return damage. Avoid when: the attack trades the only protected carrier for a blocker and no protection, evasion, or combat trick is available. Instructions: Prefer evasive Wraith attacks over wide chip damage. Keep a blocker home when public opposing power threatens lethal or forces protection to be spent defensively. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Use Combat Tricks For Lethal Or Survival, Not Filler

Priority: Medium Decision families: combat; interaction Cards: Defiant Strike; Guided Strike; Acrobatic Leap; Rebellious Strike; Arrester's Zeal; Archon's Glory; Battlefield Improvisation; Crumb and Get It; Take Up the Shield; Moment of Triumph; Adamant Will Phase windows: after blockers; before combat damage; lethal race windows Runtime cues: legal actions include instant pump, draw-combat trick, or evasion trick Use when: the trick changes lethal damage, saves a carrier, wins combat, enables a connection, or prevents dying on the return attack. Avoid when: the trick adds damage that does not change the clock and taps mana needed for protection or permission. Instructions: Use cantrip tricks when the combat result remains acceptable after the draw is unknown. Card text check required for exact pump, evasion, and prevention amounts. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Prioritize Connection Engines After Evasion

Priority: Medium Decision families: priority; combat; selection Cards: Ophidian Eye; Tandem Lookout; Last Thoughts; Goggles of Night; Hidden Strings; Goldvein Pick; Prying Blade; Cartouche of Knowledge Phase windows: precombat main; combat damage; postcombat main Runtime cues: legal actions include cast draw aura, encode, equip, or damage-trigger setup Use when: the carrier has evasion or the opponent has no visible blocker that stops the connection. Avoid when: the engine card is stranded behind blockers and the same mana can protect or create evasion. Instructions: Build card and mana velocity only after the attack is credible. Hidden Strings and Last Thoughts require Card text check required for exact encode and target sequencing. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Search And Transmute For The Missing Role

Priority: Medium Decision families: selection; mana Cards: Dizzy Spell; Muddle the Mixture; Drift of Phantasms Phase windows: main phase with sorcery-speed selection; tutor prompts Runtime cues: legal actions include transmute or library search Use when: the current hand lacks protection, evasion, a carrier, permission, or a finisher and the game pace permits spending mana without board impact. Avoid when: immediate board survival, open-stack interaction, or a lethal attack requires using mana this turn. Instructions: Route tutor choices through light-model because the correct card depends on hand, mana, matchup, and visible pressure. Do not assume exact searchable costs without Forge legal output. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Use Bounce And Custody As Tempo Protection

Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction; priority; combat Cards: You Come to a River; Chains of Custody; Sigil of Sleep; Bonds of Faith Phase windows: opponent combat; precombat main; removal response if legal Runtime cues: legal actions include bounce, tap, aura removal, or pacifism-style action Use when: a visible creature blocks the Voltron line, presents lethal pressure, or forces unfavorable combat. Avoid when: the target has an immediate enter-the-battlefield payoff that makes temporary removal harmful. Instructions: Remove blockers before committing extra auras when the attack is otherwise ready. Card text check required for exact modes, restrictions, and whether the target can attack, block, or use abilities. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Manage Mana For Double-Spell Protection Turns

Priority: High Decision families: mana; priority; interaction Cards: Island; Plains; Command Tower; Path of Ancestry; Razortide Bridge; Skybridge Towers; North Pole Gates; University Campus; Forge of Heroes; Abandoned Campground; Dig Site Inventory Phase windows: land play; payment prompts; precombat main Runtime cues: prompt:pay mana; legal land actions; available mana sources Use when: a turn can both advance Wraith or an enhancement and hold up blue or white interaction. Avoid when: tapping a unique blue or white source disables the only legal protection, counter, or combat trick. Instructions: Preserve untapped blue for permission and untapped white for protection when possible. Use tapped lands early when they do not delay Wraith, protection, or a decisive attack. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Deterministic Mandatory Mana Payment

Priority: Low Decision families: mana Cards: Island; Plains; Command Tower; Path of Ancestry; Razortide Bridge; Skybridge Towers; North Pole Gates; University Campus; Forge of Heroes; Abandoned Campground; Dig Site Inventory Phase windows: mana payment prompt Runtime cues: action:pay mana Use when: exactly one legal pay-mana action is available and it pays the spell or ability already selected. Avoid when: two or more legal pay-mana actions are available. Instructions: Choose the sole legal pay-mana action without changing the strategic line. Pilot skill floor: low No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Rebuild After Removal With Persistent Pieces

Priority: Medium Decision families: priority; selection Cards: Recommission; Sentinel's Eyes; Bone Saw; Bonesplitter; Darksteel Axe; Utility Knife; Wraith, Vicious Vigilante Phase windows: post-removal main phase; recovery turns Runtime cues: graveyard has pilot cards; legal actions include recast, return, escape-like action, or equip Use when: the main carrier died or was answered and the pilot has enough mana to rebuild pressure while preserving future protection. Avoid when: recasting into visible open interaction repeats the same loss pattern and waiting preserves protection or permission. Instructions: Reuse equipment and recursive auras before committing another fragile stack of new auras. Recommission and Sentinel's Eyes require Card text check required for exact legal targets and costs. Pilot skill floor: medium No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Sideboard Toward The Opponents Public Axis

Priority: High Decision families: sideboard Cards: Dispel; Intervene; Keep Safe; Guided Strike; Acrobatic Leap; Flare of Faith; Rebellious Strike; Beaming Defiance; Moment of Triumph; Bonds of Faith Phase windows: between games; sideboard lock Runtime cues: prompt:sideboard; match stage game two or game three Use when: the previous game showed removal, permission, racing pressure, ground stalls, or large creature blockers. Avoid when: adding reactive cards removes too much pressure for the matchup clock. Instructions: Add Dispel, Intervene, Keep Safe, or Beaming Defiance against targeted interaction; add Guided Strike, Acrobatic Leap, Rebellious Strike, Flare of Faith, or Moment of Triumph against combat races; add Bonds of Faith against creature-centric threats. Before locking a sideboard swap, verify every added card starts in the registered sideboard and every removed card starts in the registered main deck. Pilot skill floor: high No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
