Deck Name And Archetype

Slimefoot and Squee is a Duel Commander Jund singleton deck built around command-zone recursion, creature-toolbox pressure, sacrifice value, and compact damage reach rather than a pure burn or pure tribal shell. The registered commander is Slimefoot and Squee; the main deck contains exactly 100 cards, the Veles policy sideboard contains exactly 10 cards, and the supplied format-aware validation result passes the active Duel Commander contract for a 100-card singleton main deck with a 10-card sideboard.

The current tags burn and tribal are incomplete tactical labels for this build. Treat burn as a secondary reach package from Lightning Bolt, Ghostfire Slice, Goblin Bombardment, Broadside Bombardiers, Fury, and combat-damage conversion, not as the primary deck identity. Treat tribal as low-confidence metadata unless runtime-visible card text or future tuning proves a real creature-type payoff; the deck is better modeled as Jund creature-combo midrange, graveyard recursion, sacrifice toolbox, and disruption.

The deck status is hybrid rogue-stock: many individual cards are familiar Duel Commander Jund tools, but the exact 100-card configuration and sideboard are commander-specific and should not be piloted as a generic Jund midrange deck. The agent should value Slimefoot and Squee, Birthing Pod, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Green Sun's Zenith, Eldritch Evolution, Demonic Tutor, Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and graveyard bodies as an integrated engine instead of independent rate cards.

The legality posture is validated by deck counts, but runtime legality still belongs to the rules engine. The pilot must choose only legal Veles actions, must not assume commander casting or recursion is available until the engine presents it, and must treat every target, cost, sacrifice, mana payment, and graveyard action as conditional on visible game state and legal prompts.

The mana base is powerful but strategically fragile because the deck needs early green for mana creatures and engines, black for discard/removal and graveyard play, and red for the commander, removal, and damage reach. Prioritize opening hands that can produce green on turn one or two while also reaching black-red by the commander window; watch pain, shock, fetch, and utility-land costs from Blood Crypt, Overgrown Tomb, Stomping Ground, Llanowar Wastes, Phyrexian Tower, Dryad Arbor, and fetch lands when racing.

The role concern is that the deck can mis-sequence itself by spending tutor and sacrifice resources as generic value before a real engine path is assembled. Worldly Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Eldritch Evolution, Birthing Pod, Survival of the Fittest, and Fauna Shaman should normally be treated as commitment cards that require matchup, mana, graveyard, and removal-context reasoning.

Card text check required for Wastewood Verge, Blazemire Verge, Abundant Countryside, Underground Mortuary, Commercial District, Badgermole Cub, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Hexing Squelcher, Headliner Scarlett, Starting Town, Frenzied Baloth, Boggart Trawler, Multiversal Passage, and Ghostfire Slice before making exact tactical assumptions beyond their visible legal actions. Use engine output and revealed text at runtime for these cards rather than inferred roles from name, mana value, or expected set mechanics.

Opponent information status is unknown for this guide batch. Until matchup-specific context is supplied by Veles, pilot from public information, revealed cards, commander identity if visible, sideboard stage, clock, mana, and legal action text; do not infer exact hidden cards from archetype labels, and prefix any future metagame-only card references outside this deck as opponent examples rather than registered-card policy cards.

Thesis

Slimefoot and Squee assembles a Jund recursion-toolbox board where cheap mana, discard, tutors, and sacrifice outlets turn individual creatures into repeatable pressure. The deck wins by establishing early green acceleration, trading resources with Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, removal, and creature bodies, then converting graveyard access through Slimefoot and Squee, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Green Sun's Zenith, Demonic Tutor, Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and recursive or high-impact creatures into an opponent who cannot stabilize.

Prioritize mana stability before engine greed because the deck needs green early, black for disruption and removal, and red for commander lines and reach. Keep hands that can deploy Arbor Elf, Birds of Paradise, Deathrite Shaman, Delighted Halfling, Elves of Deep Shadow, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Ignoble Hierarch, Wild Growth, or Utopia Sprawl while also progressing toward black-red access; a powerful hand that cannot cast its first two spells should be treated as suspect.

Win through layered pressure rather than one deterministic combo. Slimefoot and Squee is the identity card, but the deck can also close with Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Chaos Defiler, Broadside Bombardiers, Goblin Bombardment, Lightning Bolt, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, large graveyard-scaling attackers such as Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, or Wight of the Reliquary, and incremental card advantage from Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and tutor chains.

Do not pilot this as pure burn, pure tribal, or generic midrange. Burn cards are finishers and board-control tools, not a reason to ignore engine setup; tribal metadata should not affect decisions unless legal action text or visible card text creates a real creature-type payoff. Avoid sacrificing, discarding, tutoring, or Podding away a creature just for small value when it is needed as commander fuel, sacrifice material, pressure, or a bridge to a specific converted-mana-value chain.

Commitment decisions should favor lines that either stabilize the board immediately or create durable recursive advantage. Use Worldly Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Tainted Pact, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Birthing Pod, and Eldritch Evolution only after checking visible pressure, available mana, graveyard contents, removal exposure, and whether waiting gives the opponent a cleaner answer window.

Card text check required for Wastewood Verge, Blazemire Verge, Abundant Countryside, Underground Mortuary, Commercial District, Badgermole Cub, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Hexing Squelcher, Headliner Scarlett, Starting Town, Frenzied Baloth, Boggart Trawler, Multiversal Passage, and Ghostfire Slice; until Veles exposes exact legal text, treat them by visible legal actions, mana production, card type, and battlefield role only.

Role Package

  • Threats: Slimefoot and Squee, Orcish Bowmasters, Dauthi Voidwalker, Pyrogoyf, Barrowgoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, Detective's Phoenix, Broadside Bombardiers, Chaos Defiler, Fury, Grief, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Grist, the Hunger Tide, and conditionally Badgermole Cub, Headliner Scarlett, Frenzied Baloth, Boggart Trawler, and Metamorphosis Fanatic when their visible text supports pressure or recursion.

  • Payoffs: Goblin Bombardment converts expendable creatures into reach and removal; Skullclamp converts small creatures into cards; Yawgmoth, Thran Physician converts creatures and life into selection or removal if legal text supports the prompted action; Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Survival of the Fittest, and Fauna Shaman convert creatures into the right creature for the current board.

  • Engines: Slimefoot and Squee, Birthing Pod, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Grist, the Hunger Tide, and Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes are the cards most likely to snowball. Protect engine turns by sequencing discard first when possible and by leaving enough material to exploit the engine after it resolves.

  • Velocity: Worldly Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Tainted Pact, Green Sun's Zenith, Eldritch Evolution, Birthing Pod, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Skullclamp, and cycling or modal lands/cards such as Oliphaunt, Commercial District, Underground Mortuary, Abundant Countryside, Boggart Trawler, and Multiversal Passage should be used to find mana, interaction, a sacrifice outlet, a recursion target, or a finisher based on visible need.

  • Interaction: Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, Fatal Push, Abrupt Decay, Bitter Triumph, Dismember, Snuff Out, Flare of Malice, Lightning Bolt, Fury, Accursed Marauder, Cankerbloom, Boseiju, Who Endures, Opposition Agent, Orcish Bowmasters, Endurance, Dauthi Voidwalker, Keen-Eyed Curator, and Magus of the Moon cover hand, creature, artifact/enchantment, graveyard, stack-adjacent, and mana-base pressure roles.

  • Protection: Veil of Summer, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Endurance, Dauthi Voidwalker, Deathrite Shaman, Keen-Eyed Curator, Flare of Malice, and proactive discard protect engines by stripping answers, fighting blue or black interaction when sided, or interrupting graveyard and spell timing. Treat protection as situational; do not hold it over developing mana or answering lethal pressure unless the protected engine is decisive.

  • Recursion: Slimefoot and Squee, Emperor of Bones, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Deathrite Shaman, Endurance, Boggart Trawler, Detective's Phoenix, and graveyard-enabled threats require runtime text and legal prompts before assuming exact outcomes. Favor recursion targets that immediately affect the board, rebuild an engine, or close the game.

  • Mana: Arbor Elf, Birds of Paradise, Deathrite Shaman, Delighted Halfling, Elves of Deep Shadow, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Ignoble Hierarch, Llanowar Elves, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Dryad Arbor, Phyrexian Tower, fetch lands, shock lands, dual lands, and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth form the speed package. Spend early turns fixing colors before chasing damage.

  • Sideboard modules: Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast fight blue decks; Veil of Summer fights black or blue interaction; Force of Vigor, Collector Ouphe, Culling Ritual, Feed the Swarm, and Pithing Needle answer artifacts, enchantments, activated abilities, or permanent-heavy boards; Nihil Spellbomb and Grafdigger's Cage attack graveyard and library-casting plans.

Primary Win Conditions

  • Commander recursion pressure: Use Slimefoot and Squee as the highest-identity win path when the deck has black-red-green mana, at least one meaningful creature to return or sacrifice, and enough board material that removal does not end the turn. Set up with mana creatures, discard, and graveyard stocking from combat trades, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Eldritch Evolution, Birthing Pod, or normal attrition; execute by recurring the best visible creature for board impact, then loop material through attacks, sacrifice outlets, or value engines. Prioritize this path when the opponent is trading one-for-one, graveyard hate is absent or answerable, and commander tax is still manageable. Disruption to respect: exile-based graveyard interaction, instant-speed creature removal before sacrifice costs, and effects that stop graveyard casting or entering.

  • Sacrifice reach engine: Use Goblin Bombardment, Broadside Bombardiers, Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Phyrexian Tower, and expendable creatures to convert board material into damage, cards, mana, and removal. Set up by keeping small creatures, tokens, recursive bodies, or low-value mana creatures once mana is stable; execute by sacrificing creatures only when the legal action text produces lethal reach, removes a key blocker, draws into needed gas, protects a creature from exile, or fuels a commander recursion turn. Prioritize this path against creature decks, planeswalker pressure, and opponents low enough that Lightning Bolt, Ghostfire Slice, or bombardment damage can finish. Card text check required for Ghostfire Slice; treat it as a burn or interaction line only when Veles exposes legal target and damage text.

  • Tutor-to-threat chain: Use Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Tainted Pact, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Birthing Pod, and Eldritch Evolution to assemble the exact threat or engine the board demands. Set up with a disposable creature and stable colors; execute by finding Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes for fast closing pressure, Chaos Defiler or Fury for swingy board impact, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician or Goblin Bombardment for material conversion, Magus of the Moon for mana-base pressure, or Endurance/Dauthi Voidwalker/Keen-Eyed Curator for graveyard fights. Prioritize this path when the current hand lacks a clock or when one specific permanent changes the matchup.

  • Large creature and planeswalker finish: Win fair games by attacking with Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, Detective's Phoenix, Frenzied Baloth, Chaos Defiler, Fury, Grief, and Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes. Set up graveyards, card types, and mana without overextending into sweepers; execute by forcing blocks, then using Fatal Push, Abrupt Decay, Bitter Triumph, Dismember, Snuff Out, Lightning Bolt, or Accursed Marauder to clear the path. Prioritize this path when graveyard recursion is constrained, sacrifice engines are missing, or the opponent must answer one large threat at a time. Card text check required for Frenzied Baloth; attack or tutor for it only when visible text supports the role.

Secondary Win Conditions

  • Disruption tempo can win without a full engine: Lead with Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, Grief, Orcish Bowmasters, Opposition Agent, Dauthi Voidwalker, and Magus of the Moon when the opponents visible plan depends on a narrow card type, search effect, graveyard, draw burst, or greedy mana. Convert the disruption window into pressure quickly; do not keep stripping resources while passing with no clock unless the opponent is already locked under visible constraints.

  • Burn and attrition reach should close damaged games: Treat Lightning Bolt, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, Orcish Bowmasters, Goblin Bombardment, and Broadside Bombardiers as final-turn reach after combat math, not as automatic face damage early. Aim burn at creatures when doing so preserves a planeswalker, unlocks attacks, stops lethal, or protects an engine; aim burn at the opponent when visible life totals and legal follow-up actions show a short clock.

  • Creature-land and mana-creature pressure matters in stalled games: Use Dryad Arbor, Birds of Paradise, Ignoble Hierarch, Deathrite Shaman, and spare one-mana elves as attackers, crew material for Smuggler's Copter, sacrifice fuel, or clamp targets once their mana is no longer essential. Do not expose Dryad Arbor or a key mana creature to combat if it is needed for Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, commander colors, or a post-removal rebuild.

  • Value permanents can bury control: Grist, the Hunger Tide, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Skullclamp, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, and Birthing Pod are backup engines when the opponent is answering creatures one at a time. Commit them when discard has cleared the way, when the opponent is tapped low, or when waiting gives the opponent time to deploy a stronger battlefield.

Emergency Lines

  • Behind on life: Stop racing and spend interaction on the largest immediate damage source, even if that delays a tutor chain. Preserve blockers, favor Fury, Accursed Marauder, Dismember, Fatal Push, Abrupt Decay, Bitter Triumph, Snuff Out, and Lightning Bolt, and use sacrifice outlets only when they remove attackers or create enough cards to stabilize next turn.

  • Behind on board: Search or evolve toward a sweeper-like or multi-body swing only if legal text supports it, especially Fury, Chaos Defiler, Grist, the Hunger Tide, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, or Culling Ritual after sideboarding. If no swing card is available, trade down aggressively and preserve commander recursion resources for the first safe rebuild window.

  • Behind on cards or engines: Turn small bodies into cards with Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Smuggler's Copter, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, or Birthing Pod before spending one-shot removal on low-impact threats. If the main engine is removed, pivot to large attackers plus discard rather than trying to recreate the same engine through open interaction.

  • Behind on mana: Prioritize land drops, mana creatures, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, and fetchable color fixing over speculative pressure. Avoid sacrificing lands or mana creatures to Phyrexian Tower, Eldritch Evolution, Birthing Pod, Skullclamp, or Goblin Bombardment unless the legal action prevents lethal, wins now, or recovers more mana immediately.

  • Graveyard or commander plan shut off: Switch to battlefield pressure with Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, Broadside Bombardiers, Chaos Defiler, Fury, and removal-backed attacks. Use Cankerbloom, Boseiju, Who Endures, Abrupt Decay, Force of Vigor, or Feed the Swarm only when legal text and visible targets actually answer the hate piece.

Resource Model

  • Life is a spendable tempo resource, but preserve it against fast creature pressure: Use Thoughtseize, Dismember, Snuff Out, shock lands such as Blood Crypt, Overgrown Tomb, and Stomping Ground, and fetch lands when the tempo gained protects a stronger line than the life lost. Stop paying life freely once the opponent has visible burn, evasive pressure, or a two-turn attack clock.

  • Hand size is converted into selection, disruption, and engines: Spend early discard with Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, and Grief to protect a development turn or expose the opponents role, then convert redundant creatures through Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Skullclamp, Smuggler's Copter, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, or Yawgmoth, Thran Physician when legal actions show the exchange. Do not discard the only creature needed for commander recursion, sacrifice chains, or mana development unless the payoff is immediate.

  • Mana is the decks main bottleneck: Prioritize turn-one green or black access because Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Elves of Deep Shadow, Arbor Elf, Deathrite Shaman, Ignoble Hierarch, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Thoughtseize, Duress, Inquisition of Kozilek, and Fatal Push define the first two turns. Red matters soon after for Slimefoot and Squee, Lightning Bolt, Fury, Goblin Bombardment, Broadside Bombardiers, Pyrogoyf, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, and sideboard blasts.

  • Board material is currency, not decoration: Treat mana creatures, Dryad Arbor, Saproling tokens from Slimefoot and Squee when visible, and expendable bodies as fuel for Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Phyrexian Tower, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Accursed Marauder, and Flare of Malice. Sacrifice only when the legal result advances damage, cards, mana, removal, commander recursion, or survival more than the bodys battlefield role.

  • Graveyard size and contents are active resources: Grow or exploit graveyards for Slimefoot and Squee, Deathrite Shaman, Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, Keen-Eyed Curator, Emperor of Bones, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Boggart Trawler, Endurance, and Detective's Phoenix only according to visible legal text. Card text check required for Badgermole Cub, Frenzied Baloth, Headliner Scarlett, Hexing Squelcher, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Boggart Trawler, Ghostfire Slice, Wastewood Verge, Blazemire Verge, Abundant Countryside, Lazotep Quarry, Starting Town, Multiversal Passage, and Underground Mortuary; use their resource roles only when Veles exposes supporting text.

  • Exile is a cost and a payoff zone: Use Tainted Pact only when finding a specific class of card is worth losing unknown future cards, and remember that exiled cards may remove later tutor, graveyard, or commander-rebuild options. Respect visible exile hate from Dauthi Voidwalker and sideboard Grafdigger's Cage, Nihil Spellbomb, and Keen-Eyed Curator style effects by shifting toward battlefield pressure when recursion is constrained.

  • Lands are both fixing and tactical objects: Boseiju, Who Endures, Phyrexian Tower, Dryad Arbor, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, fetch lands, shock lands, true duals, and utility lands can change removal, sacrifice, color, and combat math. Do not expose Dryad Arbor or sacrifice Phyrexian Tower fodder if that creature is required for blocking, crewing, evolution, or commander colors.

  • Sideboard bullets trade broad velocity for narrow leverage: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Veil of Summer, Force of Vigor, Collector Ouphe, Nihil Spellbomb, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, Culling Ritual, and Feed the Swarm should enter when their visible target class or matchup role is high impact. Do not dilute the creature count so far that Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Skullclamp, and sacrifice outlets lose fuel.

Mana Guide

  • Build opening mana around green plus black, then red: Keep hands that can cast an accelerator or discard spell by turn one or two and can plausibly reach B, R, and G for Slimefoot and Squee. Mulligan hands with only colorless-looking utility, slow tapped lands, or red-only starts unless they also contain interaction and a clear legal path to green or black.

  • Fetch sequencing should preserve all three colors: Early fetches such as Wooded Foothills, Arid Mesa, Windswept Heath, Scalding Tarn, Polluted Delta, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Bloodstained Mire, Verdant Catacombs, and Prismatic Vista should choose the land that casts the current hand and keeps the next turn live. Prefer untapped access when a one-mana play matters; choose tapped or lower-pain lines when the turn has no urgent spell and life total is pressured.

  • Enchant-land mana requires stable targets: Cast Wild Growth and Utopia Sprawl on a land that is likely to remain usable and that supports the hands color bottleneck; Arbor Elf makes enchanted Forest lines higher priority when visible. Check Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, Forest, Snow-Covered Forest, Bayou, Taiga, Overgrown Tomb, Stomping Ground, and other visible land types before assuming a land is a legal or optimal enchant target.

  • Utility lands need timing discipline: Play Command Tower, Bayou, Badlands, Taiga, Blood Crypt, Overgrown Tomb, Stomping Ground, Blooming Marsh, Blackcleave Cliffs, Copperline Gorge, Llanowar Wastes, Grove of the Burnwillows, Woodland Cemetery, and Boseiju, Who Endures according to immediate spell colors, not generic land quality. Hold Boseiju, Who Endures when an opposing artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land is the likely problem, but play it if missing green prevents development.

  • Play land before drawing when mana is required now: Make the land drop first before Skullclamp, Smuggler's Copter, tutor, or selection actions if the extra mana is needed to cast the drawn card, pay removal, activate an engine, or hold interaction. Delay the land drop when Tainted Pact, Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Fauna Shaman, Survival of the Fittest, or a visible draw/filter action can determine which color or utility land should be committed.

  • Use mana creatures as lands until stable: Do not trade, crew, sacrifice, or clamp Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Elves of Deep Shadow, Ignoble Hierarch, Delighted Halfling, Deathrite Shaman, or Arbor Elf before confirming the next turn still casts the hand. Once mana is stable, they can become sacrifice fodder, crew, clamp targets, or chip damage.

Mulligan Guide

  • Strong keep: Keep any seven with two lands or one land plus Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Elves of Deep Shadow, Ignoble Hierarch, Deathrite Shaman, Arbor Elf, Wild Growth, or Utopia Sprawl, plus a castable one-mana discard or removal spell. Examples include fetch land plus Bayou plus Thoughtseize plus Fauna Shaman, or Forest plus Utopia Sprawl plus Demonic Tutor plus Fatal Push.

  • Medium keep: Keep slower hands with stable three-color mana, one early interactive spell, and a clear turn-three engine or commander line. A hand with Command Tower, Blood Crypt, Woodland Cemetery, Abrupt Decay, Skullclamp, Slimefoot and Squee, and Barrowgoyf is acceptable if the opponent is not presenting a known turn-two combo or mana denial plan.

  • Risky keep: Keep one-land accelerator hands only when the land casts the accelerator and at least one follow-up spell is live if the accelerator survives. Verdant Catacombs, Elvish Mystic, Survival of the Fittest, Lightning Bolt, Fury, Chaos Defiler, and Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes is powerful but fragile; ship it on the draw against heavy one-mana removal unless the hand also has discard.

  • Automatic ship: Mulligan hands with no turn-one or turn-two play, hands without green or black access, and hands that require multiple unproven draw steps to cast spells. Ship hands such as red land plus Lightning Bolt, Broadside Bombardiers, Fury, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Chaos Defiler, and Ghostfire Slice when no green or black source is visible.

  • Matchup-dependent keep: Keep discard-heavy hands with Thoughtseize, Duress, Inquisition of Kozilek, Grief, or Dauthi Voidwalker against combo, control, graveyard, or commander-centric opponents. Against creature pressure, prefer Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, Dismember, Snuff Out, Bitter Triumph, Accursed Marauder, Orcish Bowmasters, or Fury over slow tutor hands.

  • Play/draw adjustment: On the play, value Delighted Halfling, mana elves, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, and proactive discard because they force the opponent to answer development. On the draw, require either cheap interaction or a resilient two-spell curve; do not keep a hand that only starts with Birthing Pod, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, or Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes without acceleration.

  • Trap hand: Do not keep a hand because it contains Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Eldritch Evolution, Birthing Pod, Survival of the Fittest, or Fauna Shaman if the hand lacks mana, bodies, or time to use them. Tutors are not mana, and sacrifice or creature-conversion engines need legal fodder before they become real cards.

Turn Arc

  • Turn 1: Prefer untapped green or black into acceleration or discard. Lead with Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Elves of Deep Shadow, Ignoble Hierarch, Deathrite Shaman, Arbor Elf, Wild Growth, or Utopia Sprawl when developing wins the next turn; lead with Thoughtseize, Duress, or Inquisition of Kozilek when the opponent can stop the engine, combo quickly, or punish a tapped-out start. Use Fatal Push or Lightning Bolt only if the opposing creature changes the next turns mana, life, or engine math.

  • Turn 2: Establish the engine piece that the hand can support. Cast Fauna Shaman, Survival of the Fittest, Skullclamp, Smuggler's Copter, Dauthi Voidwalker, Orcish Bowmasters, Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, Keen-Eyed Curator, or Cankerbloom according to board texture; hold up Abrupt Decay, Bitter Triumph, Dismember, Snuff Out, or Boseiju, Who Endures when the opponents visible permanent is more dangerous than your development. Do not expose Dryad Arbor unless it is needed for mana, sacrifice, clamp, or Green Sun's Zenith sequencing.

  • Turn 3: Convert acceleration into Slimefoot and Squee, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Grist, the Hunger Tide, Wight of the Reliquary, Goblin Bombardment, or a protected tutor line. Cast the commander when a Saproling body, recursion setup, or pressure matters and removal is acceptable; delay it when using discard first can clear exile removal or when the battlefield demands removal before a three-mana threat.

  • Turns 4-5: Turn material into a decisive board, not disconnected value. Use Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Phyrexian Tower, and Slimefoot and Squee to convert expendable creatures into cards, damage, mana, removal, or recursion. Commit Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Broadside Bombardiers, Chaos Defiler, Fury, Metamorphosis Fanatic, or Oliphaunt when the opponent is low on resources or when waiting gives them a stronger reset.

  • Late game: Rebuild through commander access, graveyard leverage, tutors, and sacrifice engines while respecting visible hate. Prioritize lines involving Slimefoot and Squee, Demonic Tutor, Tainted Pact, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Endurance, Emperor of Bones, Boggart Trawler, Detective's Phoenix, Deathrite Shaman, and Keen-Eyed Curator only when legal actions and visible zones support them. Card text check required for Badgermole Cub, Frenzied Baloth, Headliner Scarlett, Hexing Squelcher, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Boggart Trawler, and Ghostfire Slice; treat their late-game roles as conditional until Veles exposes exact text.

Card Roles

  • Slimefoot and Squee: Treat the commander as the decks repeatable material engine, pressure source, and graveyard bridge rather than a generic three-drop. Cast it when the Saproling, sacrifice body, or recursion text matters this turn or next turn; hold it when open mana and known exile removal make the first cast low-impact. Its best shells include Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Phyrexian Tower, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Birthing Pod, and expendable creatures.

  • Birds of Paradise; Llanowar Elves; Elvish Mystic; Fyndhorn Elves; Elves of Deep Shadow; Ignoble Hierarch; Delighted Halfling; Arbor Elf: Treat these as lands until the next meaningful spell is secure. Do not trade, crew, clamp, or sacrifice them early unless the visible hand still casts Slimefoot and Squee, Birthing Pod, Grist, the Hunger Tide, or interaction on curve. Delighted Halfling is especially important when commander or planeswalker access matters through permission.

  • Deathrite Shaman: Use Deathrite Shaman as flexible mana, graveyard pressure, and reach, but verify visible graveyards before relying on any mode. Prioritize mana when accelerating into a protected engine; prioritize graveyard exile against recursion or delve pressure; prioritize life drain only when racing or closing.

  • Wild Growth; Utopia Sprawl: Use aura acceleration to make turn-two engine starts, but protect the enchanted land choice from avoidable color bottlenecks. Prefer a basic or stable green source when possible, and name the color that lets the current hand cast black disruption plus green engines before red finishers.

  • Thoughtseize; Duress; Inquisition of Kozilek; Grief: Use discard to clear the path before committing fragile engines, tutor lines, or commander recursion. Take the card that most immediately stops development, answers Slimefoot and Squee, or creates a faster kill; do not spend discard on low-impact cards when a visible battlefield threat already demands removal. Grief is strongest when the pitch cost is offset by tempo, reanimation value, or preventing a decisive opposing play.

  • Fatal Push; Lightning Bolt; Abrupt Decay; Dismember; Snuff Out; Bitter Triumph; Flare of Malice; Fury: Use cheap interaction to protect life total, mana development, and engine permanents. Spend free or life-paid removal only when the tempo swing matters, because this deck often pays life to fetch, shock, or race. Abrupt Decay answers small noncreature hate cleanly; Fury can reset creature boards or become a sacrifice body; Flare of Malice is best when an expendable black creature makes the alternate cost materially cheaper.

  • Cankerbloom; Boseiju, Who Endures; Keen-Eyed Curator: Use these as main-deck answers to artifacts, enchantments, graveyard pressure, or other problematic permanents only when the visible target matters. Cankerbloom should not be sacrificed casually if it is also a creature body for Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Skullclamp, or commander recursion. Card text check required for exact Keen-Eyed Curator modes before treating it as guaranteed graveyard hate.

  • Orcish Bowmasters; Dauthi Voidwalker; Opposition Agent; Magus of the Moon: Deploy disruptive creatures when their text attacks the opponents current plan, not just because mana is available. Orcish Bowmasters punishes draw and stabilizes against small creatures; Dauthi Voidwalker pressures graveyard plans and can convert exiled cards if legal; Opposition Agent is a flash-speed punishment card, so hold it when the opponent is likely to search; Magus of the Moon is a commitment gate because it can also restrict this decks greedy mana.

  • Skullclamp; Goblin Bombardment; Yawgmoth, Thran Physician; Phyrexian Tower: Treat these as sacrifice infrastructure that turns expendable bodies into cards, mana, damage, or board control. Prioritize them when Slimefoot and Squee, Saprolings, Dryad Arbor, mana creatures that are no longer needed, or recursive bodies are available. Do not sacrifice the only mana source that enables the next turns hand unless the immediate payoff prevents lethal, wins the race, or creates a decisive engine state.

  • Survival of the Fittest; Fauna Shaman; Worldly Tutor; Demonic Tutor; Tainted Pact; Green Sun's Zenith: Use selection to find the missing role, not the flashiest card. Find mana or a cheap body when the hand cannot function, interaction when the opponents board or stack demands it, sacrifice payoff when material is abundant, or a closer when the opponent is low. Tainted Pact requires careful singleton awareness and visible objective selection; stop only when the named role is found and the exile cost is acceptable.

  • Birthing Pod; Eldritch Evolution; Grist, the Hunger Tide: Use creature-conversion engines when a legal sacrifice upgrades the board or finds a specific role. Do not sacrifice a unique hate creature, active mana piece, or commander body unless the target line is visibly better. Grist, the Hunger Tide supports creature density, removal, and sacrifice plans, but protect it only when the loyalty resource is more valuable than advancing the board.

  • Wight of the Reliquary; Barrowgoyf; Pyrogoyf; Emperor of Bones; Endurance; Boggart Trawler; Metamorphosis Fanatic; Detective's Phoenix: Use graveyard-adjacent threats as pressure, recursion, or stabilization according to visible zones. Endurance is both protection against graveyard wins and a flash body; hold it when the graveyard trigger matters more than tempo. Card text check required for Boggart Trawler and Metamorphosis Fanatic before relying on exact recursion or modal behavior.

  • Accursed Marauder; Cankerbloom; Dryad Arbor; expendable mana creatures: Use small creatures as bridge material for sacrifice, clamp, pod, and commander recursion after mana is stable. Accursed Marauder is strongest against single large creatures or protected threats, but weaker when the opponent has expendable bodies. Dryad Arbor is a land and creature liability; fetch it only when its body or green mana is worth exposure.

  • Broadside Bombardiers; Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes; Chaos Defiler; Fury; Oliphaunt: Use top-end pressure to end games after discard or removal has reduced the opponents answers. Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes turns board presence into a fast clock and card flow; protect it when it is the cleanest win condition. Chaos Defiler and Oliphaunt are high-impact but expensive; cast them when mana is stable and the opponent cannot easily punish the tap-out. Card text check required for exact Oliphaunt alternate timing if relevant.

  • Smuggler's Copter; Detective's Phoenix; Headliner Scarlett; Badgermole Cub; Frenzied Baloth; Hexing Squelcher; Ghostfire Slice: Use these as conditional pressure, filtering, or reach only after checking legal text and visible board texture. Smuggler's Copter is best when expendable bodies can crew without costing mana development. Card text check required for Headliner Scarlett, Badgermole Cub, Frenzied Baloth, Hexing Squelcher, and Ghostfire Slice; do not assume burn, combat, or protection roles beyond legal actions shown by Veles.

  • Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth; Command Tower; dual lands; fetch lands; Prismatic Vista; Multiversal Passage; Starting Town; verge lands: Use the mana base to preserve green on turn one and black interaction on turn one or two while planning red as the third color unless the hand needs immediate Lightning Bolt or Fury. Fetch untapped shock or dual lands only when tempo matters; choose tapped or safer sources when life total is under pressure.

  • Phyrexian Tower; Lazotep Quarry; Boseiju, Who Endures; Dryad Arbor; Grove of the Burnwillows: Treat utility lands as spells with mana text. Phyrexian Tower and Lazotep Quarry can convert bodies into mana or value if legal, but avoid weakening combat or engine resources without a clear payoff. Boseiju, Who Endures should be held as interaction when a visible artifact, enchantment, or land is more threatening than making an ordinary land drop. Grove of the Burnwillows life gain matters in races; use it when color fixing outweighs the point of life.

Card Hover Notes

Slimefoot and Squee

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, commander and core recursion engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; recursion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Creates Saproling material on entry or attack, then turns a Saproling plus {1}{B}{R}{G} into returning Slimefoot and Squee and up to one other target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.
  • Timing: Cast when the Saproling body, attack trigger, or future sorcery-speed recursion matters; delay into known exile removal unless discard or pressure makes the first body worth it.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes Jund mana and later a Saproling; produces a creature body, Saproling material, graveyard recursion, Pod/Evolution/clamp/sacrifice fuel, and repeated pressure.
  • Partners / packages: Uses Saprolings with Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Phyrexian Tower, and Birthing Pod; returns high-impact creatures such as Chaos Defiler, Fury, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Grief, Endurance, and Broadside Bombardiers.
  • Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Metamorphosis Fanatic for one-shot creature return and Emperor of Bones for temporary graveyard theft.
  • Failure modes: Activating without a meaningful second target, spending the only Saproling before a better recursion turn, or relying on graveyard access through Grafdigger's Cage, Nihil Spellbomb, opposing exile, or your own mistimed Endurance.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in removal-heavy and midrange games; shift toward battlefield threats if visible graveyard hate or commander-tax pressure makes recursion inefficient.

Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, mana resource and utility land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Makes each land a Forest in addition to its other land types, enabling Arbor Elf, legal Utopia Sprawl targets, and green access through utility lands.
  • Timing: Play early when it fixes green or turns on Arbor Elf/Utopia Sprawl; hold if revealing it helps the opponent more or if Magus of the Moon sequencing makes basics more valuable.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes the land drop; produces Forest typing across Phyrexian Tower, Lazotep Quarry, Boseiju, Who Endures, Command Tower, fetch targets already on board, and opponent lands too.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Badgermole Cub, and green-heavy cards Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Green Sun's Zenith, and Eldritch Evolution.
  • Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Multiversal Passage for chosen land type and Command Tower for color fixing.
  • Failure modes: It also fixes opposing lands, and it does not itself provide black or red unless another effect or land text does; do not assume it beats Magus of the Moon.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against your own color strain; be cautious against opponents whose nonbasic lands become easier to use with Forest typing.

Accursed Marauder

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, role-player edict creature.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Forces each player to sacrifice a nontoken creature of their choice, letting this deck trade a disposable creature for an opposing protected or oversized nontoken creature.
  • Timing: Best when opponent has one important nontoken creature or few expendable bodies; poor into token boards or when your only nontoken creature is an engine piece.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes two mana and likely one of your nontoken creatures; outputs a 2/1 body if it survives, sacrifice triggers, and a graveyard card for recursion or goyf sizing.
  • Partners / packages: Sacrifice-friendly with Slimefoot and Squee, Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Birthing Pod, and Eldritch Evolution.
  • Role peers: Closest removal overlap is Flare of Malice for forced sacrifice and Bitter Triumph for broad creature/planeswalker removal.
  • Failure modes: Opponent chooses what they sacrifice, so do not expect it to kill a specific creature when they control expendable nontoken creatures.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against hexproof, indestructible, and single-threat boards; weak against go-wide creature decks and token-heavy boards.

Worldly Tutor

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant-speed creature search slot.
  • Role type: tutor/search.
  • Deck-specific job: Finds the creature that solves the next turn: Endurance for graveyards, Opposition Agent for search, Orcish Bowmasters for draw bursts, Cankerbloom for artifact/enchantment pressure, Magus of the Moon for nonbasic mana, Fury for creature boards, or Chaos Defiler for a swing permanent answer.
  • Timing: Prefer opponent end step before your draw; cast earlier only when the card must be drawn immediately or protected from discard.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G} and your next draw step; outputs a revealed creature on top, not in hand.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Slimefoot and Squee, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Survival of the Fittest, and Fauna Shaman by setting exact creature access.
  • Role peers: Fauna Shaman, Survival of the Fittest, Green Sun's Zenith, and Demonic Tutor also search, but only Worldly Tutor is instant and top-of-library.
  • Failure modes: Do not shuffle with Wooded Foothills, Verdant Catacombs, Prismatic Vista, or another fetch after tutoring unless you intentionally abandon the chosen creature.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Treat the revealed creature as public information; choose high-impact hate or pressure when the opponent can plan around the draw.

Wooded Foothills

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fetch-land mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for a Mountain or Forest card, putting it onto the battlefield; registered high-value targets include Bayou, Taiga, Blood Crypt, Overgrown Tomb, Stomping Ground, Commercial District, Forest, Snow-Covered Forest, and Dryad Arbor.
  • Timing: Crack before non-random top-deck setup; hold when Fatal Push revolt, landfall-like timing, or hiding the chosen color matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop, 1 life, and itself; outputs untapped or tapped fixing depending on target and shock payment.
  • Partners / packages: Enables Arbor Elf, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Deathrite Shaman, Wight of the Reliquary, and graveyard count for Barrowgoyf/Pyrogoyf.
  • Role peers: Closest role overlap is Verdant Catacombs, Misty Rainforest, and Windswept Heath for Forest access.
  • Failure modes: Do not fetch Dryad Arbor into removal or combat unless the body is needed for mana, Green Sun's Zenith-style acceleration, sacrifice, or blocking.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Fetch basics or stable Forest sources before Magus of the Moon; pay shock life only when tempo matters.

Arid Mesa

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fetch-land mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for a Mountain or Plains card; in this registered list it has real Mountain-type targets Badlands, Blood Crypt, Commercial District, Stomping Ground, Taiga, and Mountain, but no registered Plains.
  • Timing: Use when red access is needed for Slimefoot and Squee, Lightning Bolt, Goblin Bombardment, Fury, Broadside Bombardiers, or sideboard blasts; avoid assuming white access.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes a land, 1 life, and the fetch; outputs a Mountain-type land onto the battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: Fuels Deathrite Shaman, Fatal Push revolt, Wight of the Reliquary, Barrowgoyf, and Pyrogoyf.
  • Role peers: Closest red-fetch overlap is Wooded Foothills, Scalding Tarn, and Bloodstained Mire.
  • Failure modes: Cannot find Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Forest, or Swamp unless another effect changes their types before search; do not treat it as green-black fixing by itself.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against fast pressure, prefer lower-life lines when the hand does not need untapped shock mana immediately.

Windswept Heath

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fetch-land mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for a Forest or Plains card; registered useful Forest targets are Bayou, Commercial District, Overgrown Tomb, Stomping Ground, Taiga, Forest, Snow-Covered Forest, and Dryad Arbor, with no registered Plains.
  • Timing: Prioritize early green for Arbor Elf, Birds of Paradise, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, and Survival of the Fittest.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop, 1 life, and itself; outputs a battlefield land and graveyard card.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Utopia Sprawl, Arbor Elf, Badgermole Cub, Deathrite Shaman, and Wight of the Reliquary.
  • Role peers: Closest role overlap is Verdant Catacombs, Misty Rainforest, and Wooded Foothills.
  • Failure modes: Do not claim it finds red unless the chosen registered Forest also has Mountain text such as Commercial District, Stomping Ground, or Taiga.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Fetch basic Forest or Snow-Covered Forest when planning Magus of the Moon or playing around nonbasic hate.

Wild Growth

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core one-mana acceleration Aura.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Enchants a land so whenever that land is tapped for mana, its controller adds an additional {G}, accelerating into Slimefoot and Squee, Birthing Pod, Grist, the Hunger Tide, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, and double-spell turns.
  • Timing: Best on turn one on a stable land; choose a land likely to remain usable and preferably a Forest if Arbor Elf is present.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G} and an enchant-land target; outputs recurring extra green mana while the land remains available.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Arbor Elf, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Forest, Snow-Covered Forest, Bayou, Taiga, Overgrown Tomb, and Stomping Ground.
  • Role peers: Utopia Sprawl is the closest peer, but Wild Growth enchants any land and only adds green.
  • Failure modes: Poor on a land likely to be destroyed, bounced, tapped down, or shut off by your own Magus of the Moon sequencing; does not provide black or red.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against tempo decks, weigh acceleration against getting two-for-oneed by land interaction.

Bayou

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premium dual-land mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides untapped {B} or {G} as a Swamp Forest, supporting early discard/removal and green engines.
  • Timing: Fetch or play early when the hand needs Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, or double-green development.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs black or green and counts as both Swamp and Forest for checklands, fetches, Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, and Yavimaya interactions.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Wooded Foothills, Windswept Heath, Polluted Delta, Verdant Catacombs, Misty Rainforest, Marsh Flats, Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, and Woodland Cemetery.
  • Role peers: Overgrown Tomb and Underground Mortuary share Swamp Forest typing, though Overgrown Tomb can cost life and Underground Mortuary enters tapped.
  • Failure modes: Does not provide red; do not keep a Bayou-only hand that cannot reach Slimefoot and Squee or red removal on time.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: High priority before Magus of the Moon when black-green spells matter.

Wastewood Verge

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, conditional green-black mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {G} unconditionally, or {B} only if you control a Swamp or a Forest, making it a good green source that becomes black fixing with Bayou, Badlands, Blood Crypt, Overgrown Tomb, Underground Mortuary, Swamp, Forest, Snow-Covered Forest, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, and similar typed lands.
  • Timing: Play early when green is the bottleneck; sequence a Swamp or Forest first if black is needed immediately.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs green or conditional black.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Arbor Elf only if Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth makes it a Forest; helps cast Thoughtseize, Abrupt Decay, Survival of the Fittest, and Slimefoot and Squee.
  • Role peers: Closest role overlap is Blazemire Verge for conditional second color and Woodland Cemetery for Swamp/Forest dependency.
  • Failure modes: It is not a Swamp or Forest from its own text and does not make red; do not assume black if no Swamp or Forest is controlled.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in hands needing turn-one green; awkward under Magus of the Moon planning if black access is not already secured.

Birthing Pod

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core creature-conversion artifact engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; tutor/search.
  • Deck-specific job: Sacrifices a creature at sorcery speed to put a creature with mana value exactly one higher from your library onto the battlefield, turning spare bodies into matchup-specific creatures.
  • Timing: Cast when you can activate soon or when discard/protection has cleared artifact removal; avoid tapping out with no legal or valuable sacrifice chain.
  • Inputs / outputs: Costs {3}{G/P} and activation {1}{G/P}, with Phyrexian green payable by {G} or 2 life; consumes a creature and outputs a higher-mana-value creature directly onto the battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: Upgrades Dryad Arbor or one-mana elves into two-drops such as Fauna Shaman, Dauthi Voidwalker, Cankerbloom, Orcish Bowmasters; upgrades two-drops into Grist, the Hunger Tide, Magus of the Moon, Wight of the Reliquary; upgrades three-drops into Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes if legal by mana value.
  • Role peers: Eldritch Evolution is the burst peer; Fauna Shaman and Survival of the Fittest search to hand instead.
  • Failure modes: Collector Ouphe and Grafdigger's Cage can shut off or constrain it; sacrificing a unique mana creature, hate piece, or commander body without a decisive target is a common punt.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in fair games; against artifact hate or fast combo, use only when the chain immediately stabilizes or finds hate.

Blackcleave Cliffs

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fast black-red mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Enters untapped early if you control two or fewer other lands and casts Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, Goblin Bombardment, Orcish Bowmasters, and red sideboard blasts.
  • Timing: Prioritize in the first three land drops; later it may enter tapped, so sequence it before slower utility lands when curving out.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs {B} or {R}.
  • Partners / packages: Supports early interaction Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, and commander colors with green from another source.
  • Role peers: Copperline Gorge and Blooming Marsh are allied fast-land peers in other color pairs.
  • Failure modes: Does not provide green, and late tapped entry can block double-spell turns.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against fast decks where untapped early removal matters; weaker in hands needing turn-one green acceleration.

Blazemire Verge

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, conditional black-red mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {B} unconditionally, or {R} only if you control a Swamp or Mountain, supporting discard first and red follow-up once land types are established.
  • Timing: Play early for black interaction; sequence a Swamp or Mountain-type land first if red is required for Lightning Bolt, Goblin Bombardment, Slimefoot and Squee, or Fury.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs black or conditional red.
  • Partners / packages: Turns on with Bayou, Badlands, Blood Crypt, Commercial District, Overgrown Tomb, Stomping Ground, Underground Mortuary, Taiga, Swamp, Mountain, and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth only for Forest/Swamp interactions if the land already has Swamp.
  • Role peers: Wastewood Verge is the conditional-color peer; Blackcleave Cliffs is the untapped early black-red peer.
  • Failure modes: Does not make green, and red is unavailable without Swamp or Mountain control.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good for discard-heavy keeps; check red availability before relying on sideboard Pyroblast or Red Elemental Blast.

Abundant Countryside

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, creature-only fixing and late token utility land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {C}, taps for one mana of any color only to cast a creature spell, and can pay {6}, {T} to create a 1/1 colorless Shapeshifter creature token with changeling.
  • Timing: Use early to cast creature-heavy hands; do not count its colored mana for Thoughtseize, Survival of the Fittest, Goblin Bombardment, removal, or planeswalkers.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs colorless or creature-restricted colored mana; late activation consumes seven total mana including tap and produces sacrifice/clamp/Pod material.
  • Partners / packages: Casts creatures such as Slimefoot and Squee, Fauna Shaman, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Fury, and Chaos Defiler; token feeds Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and Phyrexian Tower.
  • Role peers: Starting Town fixes any spell at a life cost; Command Tower fixes commander colors without restriction.
  • Failure modes: Treating creature-only colored mana as spell mana can strand Abrupt Decay, Demonic Tutor, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, or Birthing Pod.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in long attrition games where token production matters; worse when early noncreature interaction is mandatory.

Blood Crypt

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, shock dual mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Swamp Mountain source for black-red spells and fetch targets, with optional 2 life payment to enter untapped.
  • Timing: Fetch untapped when immediate Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, Goblin Bombardment, or Slimefoot and Squee color access matters; let it enter tapped when life and tempo allow.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop or fetch target; outputs {B} or {R} and carries Swamp/Mountain types.
  • Partners / packages: Found by Wooded Foothills, Arid Mesa, Polluted Delta, Marsh Flats, Bloodstained Mire, and Scalding Tarn; turns on Blazemire Verge, Woodland Cemetery via Swamp, and Snuff Out alternate cost.
  • Role peers: Badlands provides the same colors without shock cost; Stomping Ground and Overgrown Tomb cover the other Jund shock pairs.
  • Failure modes: Life payment stacks with Thoughtseize, Dismember, Snuff Out, Bitter Triumph, and fetches; do not overpay into burn range.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: High priority for red-black interaction; against aggro, choose tapped or a different source when no immediate spell is needed.

Utopia Sprawl

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core one-mana fixing Aura.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Enchants a Forest, chooses a color as it enters, and makes the enchanted Forest add one mana of the chosen color whenever tapped for mana.
  • Timing: Cast early on Forest, Snow-Covered Forest, Bayou, Taiga, Overgrown Tomb, Stomping Ground, Commercial District, Underground Mortuary, Dryad Arbor, or any land made a Forest by Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth; choose the color that unlocks the next two turns.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G} and a legal Forest target; outputs recurring chosen-color mana.
  • Partners / packages: Excellent with Arbor Elf, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, Wild Growth, and green engines Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Green Sun's Zenith.
  • Role peers: Wild Growth is the closest peer but adds only green and can enchant any land.
  • Failure modes: Cannot enchant a non-Forest unless Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth or the lands own types make it a Forest; wrong color choice can strand black/red spells.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Against land interaction, prefer basic Forest targets when possible.

Underground Mortuary

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped Swamp Forest mana resource with surveil.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides {B} or {G}, enters tapped, and surveils 1 by looking at the top card and optionally putting it into your graveyard.
  • Timing: Play when the turn can absorb tapped entry or when surveil helps set graveyard/tutor plans; avoid as the only turn-one source for immediate plays.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and tempo; outputs black/green fixing, Swamp/Forest typing, and optional graveyard stocking.
  • Partners / packages: Fetchable by Wooded Foothills, Windswept Heath, Polluted Delta, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, and Verdant Catacombs; surveil supports Slimefoot and Squee, Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, and Detective's Phoenix.
  • Role peers: Commercial District is the red-green surveil dual; Overgrown Tomb is the untapped-at-life-cost Swamp Forest.
  • Failure modes: Entering tapped can miss turn-one discard or acceleration; do not mill a card needed as the only answer unless graveyard use is immediate.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in slower matchups; risky against tempo or aggro if it delays removal.

Thoughtseize

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premium proactive discard.
  • Role type: interaction-discard.
  • Deck-specific job: Target player reveals their hand; you choose a nonland card and that player discards it, at a cost of 2 life.
  • Timing: Use before committing Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, or commander recursion; skip or delay if visible board pressure makes life loss unsafe.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {B} and 2 life; outputs hand information and removes any nonland card.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Slimefoot and Squee, Fauna Shaman, Demonic Tutor, Eldritch Evolution, Green Sun's Zenith, and sideboard hate.
  • Role peers: Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, and Grief are discard peers with different restrictions.
  • Failure modes: Taking a low-impact card while a battlefield threat demands removal, or paying 2 life against burn/aggro without stopping more damage.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against combo/control; weaker after opponents empty their hand or when every life point matters.

Cankerbloom

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flexible artifact/enchantment answer creature.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; sideboard bullet; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides a 3/2 body and can pay {1} and sacrifice itself to choose one: destroy target artifact, destroy target enchantment, or proliferate.
  • Timing: Deploy when its body matters or when a visible artifact/enchantment must be answered; hold if sacrificing it would break Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Skullclamp, or commander material.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes two mana; activation consumes {1} and Cankerbloom; outputs permanent removal or extra counters.
  • Mode map: Destroy target artifact for equipment, artifact engines, or hate; destroy target enchantment for prison, Aura, or graveyard-hate enchantments; proliferate mainly to add loyalty/counters on Grist, the Hunger Tide, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician -1/-1 counters, Emperor of Bones +1/+1 counters, or finality-style counters when profitable.
  • Partners / packages: Searchable by Worldly Tutor, Fauna Shaman, Survival of the Fittest, Green Sun's Zenith, Birthing Pod, and Eldritch Evolution.
  • Role peers: Boseiju, Who Endures, Abrupt Decay, Force of Vigor, and Feed the Swarm overlap as permanent answers.
  • Failure modes: Proliferate is rarely worth losing artifact/enchantment removal unless counters immediately swing the game.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Bring/tutor highly against artifact, enchantment, prison, and graveyard-hate boards.

Chaos Defiler

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, top-end disruptive threat.
  • Role type: threat/clock; interaction-removal; recursion payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: A 5/4 trample artifact creature whose enter-or-dies trigger makes you choose a nonland permanent each opponent controls, then destroys one chosen at random.
  • Timing: Cast or reanimate when the opponent has one or a few high-impact nonland permanents; weaker when random destruction can hit only low-value material.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes five mana; outputs a trampling body and one randomized nonland permanent destruction event on entry and again on death.
  • Partners / packages: Excellent with Slimefoot and Squee, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Emperor of Bones, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and Phyrexian Tower.
  • Role peers: Fury is the creature-board swing peer; Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes is the standalone top-end pressure peer.
  • Failure modes: The opponent does not choose; you choose eligible nonland permanents and random selection destroys one of the chosen. Do not rely on it to hit a specific permanent if multiple opponents/permanents are involved.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against midrange, planeswalkers, and nonland permanent engines; less reliable against token clutter or empty boards.

Tainted Pact

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant-speed high-risk selection spell.
  • Role type: card selection; tutor/search.
  • Deck-specific job: Exiles cards from the top until you put one into hand or exile two with the same name; singleton construction makes it a powerful but costly role-finder.
  • Timing: Use when a specific role is worth losing unknown future cards: missing land, removal, Goblin Bombardment, Survival of the Fittest, Demonic Tutor, graveyard hate, or lethal reach.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B} and library/exile resources; outputs one chosen card to hand if you stop in time.
  • Partners / packages: Finds any registered card but can exile Slimefoot and Squee targets, Green Sun's Zenith targets, Birthing Pod chains, or boarded Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Force of Vigor, Collector Ouphe, Nihil Spellbomb, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, Culling Ritual, Feed the Swarm, and Veil of Summer if used carelessly.
  • Role peers: Demonic Tutor is safer but sorcery speed; Worldly Tutor and Green Sun's Zenith are narrower.
  • Failure modes: Continuing past a good-enough card for a perfect card can exile too much action or hit duplicate basic names such as Forest/Snow-Covered Forest are not same name, but exact duplicate names matter if present.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best in urgent games where any live answer is acceptable; avoid in grindy games if the exile cost breaks future recursion.

Forest

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, strategically important basic green mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides untapped {G}, supports one-mana acceleration, gives a basic Forest for fetches, and remains functional under Magus of the Moon planning before the Moon resolves.
  • Timing: Fetch/play early when Arbor Elf, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, or Birds of Paradise must be cast.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop or fetch search; outputs green and a stable Forest target.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Wooded Foothills, Windswept Heath, Misty Rainforest, Verdant Catacombs, and Prismatic Vista.
  • Role peers: Snow-Covered Forest is the second basic Forest; Bayou, Taiga, Overgrown Tomb, and Stomping Ground add colors but are nonbasic.
  • Failure modes: Does not cast black discard or red reach by itself.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Important against nonbasic hate and when setting up your own Magus of the Moon.

Commercial District

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped Mountain Forest mana resource with surveil.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides {R} or {G}, enters tapped, and surveils 1 by looking at the top card and optionally putting it into your graveyard.
  • Timing: Play when tapped entry is acceptable and red-green fixing or graveyard setup matters; avoid if you need immediate Lightning Bolt, Wild Growth, or mana creature.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and tempo; outputs red/green fixing, Mountain/Forest typing, and optional graveyard stocking.
  • Partners / packages: Fetchable by Wooded Foothills, Arid Mesa, Windswept Heath, Scalding Tarn, Misty Rainforest, and Bloodstained Mire; supports Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, Oliphaunt Mountaincycling search, and graveyard cards Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, Detective's Phoenix.
  • Role peers: Underground Mortuary is the black-green surveil land; Stomping Ground is the untapped-at-life-cost red-green shock.
  • Failure modes: Tapped entry can lose tempo; do not mill a needed answer without graveyard payoff.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in slower setup games; risky against fast starts.

Survival of the Fittest

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core creature-tutor engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; tutor/search; discard outlet.
  • Deck-specific job: Pays {G} and discards a creature card to search for a creature card, reveal it, put it into hand, then shuffle, converting redundant bodies into exact tools.
  • Timing: Commit when you have a creature to discard and green to activate soon; protect with discard or Veil of Summer when opponents can remove it.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes mana and creature cards in hand; outputs creature access and graveyard fuel for Slimefoot and Squee, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, and Wight of the Reliquary.
  • Partners / packages: Finds Endurance, Opposition Agent, Cankerbloom, Orcish Bowmasters, Magus of the Moon, Fury, Chaos Defiler, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and Metamorphosis Fanatic.
  • Role peers: Fauna Shaman is the creature-bodied peer; Demonic Tutor finds any card once.
  • Failure modes: Discarding the only relevant recursion target, mana creature, or black/red pitch card can break later lines.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in fair and graveyard-friendly games; weaker through graveyard hate or enchantment removal unless activation happens immediately.

Snow-Covered Forest

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, strategically important basic green mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides untapped {G} and a second exact-name basic Forest for fetch sequencing, enchant-land starts, and Magus of the Moon resilience.
  • Timing: Fetch/play early when green acceleration is needed and preserving nonbasic duals matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop or fetch search; outputs stable green and Forest typing.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Prismatic Vista, Wooded Foothills, Windswept Heath, Misty Rainforest, and Verdant Catacombs.
  • Role peers: Forest is the closest peer; nonbasic Forest duals add colors at higher vulnerability.
  • Failure modes: No black/red access by itself, so plan follow-up lands for Slimefoot and Squee and removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against Magus of the Moon plans and nonbasic punishment.

Delighted Halfling

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana accelerator and legendary-spell protection.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {C} or one mana of any color to cast a legendary spell, and that legendary spell can't be countered.
  • Timing: Deploy early when it accelerates Slimefoot and Squee, Grist, the Hunger Tide, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, or Yawgmoth, Thran Physician; preserve when permission is visible.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes one green mana and summoning-sick turn; outputs colorless mana for generic costs or protected colored mana for legendary spells.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Slimefoot and Squee, Grist, the Hunger Tide, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth.
  • Role peers: Birds of Paradise and Ignoble Hierarch provide broader colored mana; only Delighted Halfling gives uncounterable legendary spells.
  • Failure modes: Its colored mana cannot cast nonlegendary Birthing Pod, Survival of the Fittest, removal, or sideboard blasts.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: High value against blue control; less special against creature decks where a generic mana elf may be equivalent.

Skullclamp

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core sacrifice-card engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Equips for {1}, gives +1/-1, and draws two cards when equipped creature dies, turning Saprolings, mana creatures, Dryad Arbor, and expendable bodies into cards.
  • Timing: Play early if you have fodder or expect removal; equip when losing the body does not break mana, blocking, or commander recursion.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes mana and usually a small creature; outputs two cards per death and graveyard material.
  • Partners / packages: Strong with Slimefoot and Squee Saprolings, Dryad Arbor, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Birds of Paradise, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and Phyrexian Tower.
  • Role peers: Yawgmoth, Thran Physician and Smuggler's Copter also convert bodies into cards, but with different costs and timing.
  • Failure modes: Collector Ouphe shuts off equip; clamping your only mana creature before casting key spells is a common failure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against removal and midrange; slower against combo unless it immediately finds disruption.

Scalding Tarn

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fetch-land mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for an Island or Mountain card; registered Mountain targets include Badlands, Blood Crypt, Commercial District, Stomping Ground, Taiga, and Mountain, with no registered Island.
  • Timing: Use for red access; crack before Worldly Tutor top-card setup if you need the shuffle first.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop, 1 life, and itself; outputs a Mountain-type land and a graveyard card.
  • Partners / packages: Enables Lightning Bolt, Goblin Bombardment, Fury, Broadside Bombardiers, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Slimefoot and Squee.
  • Role peers: Arid Mesa, Wooded Foothills, and Bloodstained Mire overlap on Mountain access.
  • Failure modes: It does not find green or black unless the Mountain target also has Forest or Swamp text, such as Stomping Ground, Taiga, Commercial District, Badlands, or Blood Crypt.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Choose basic Mountain only when red stability or nonbasic-hate preparation outweighs fixing.

Pyrogoyf

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, graveyard-scaling threat and damage payoff.
  • Role type: threat/clock; mechanic payoff; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Its power equals the number of card types among cards in all graveyards and toughness equals that number plus 1; when it or another Lhurgoyf you control enters, that creature deals damage equal to its power to any target.
  • Timing: Best after several card types are in graveyards or when the enter damage kills a creature/planeswalker or sets lethal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes four mana; outputs scalable body and damage to any target on Lhurgoyf entry.
  • Partners / packages: Pairs with Barrowgoyf, fetch lands, Tainted Pact, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Underground Mortuary, Commercial District, removal, and sacrificed creatures.
  • Role peers: Barrowgoyf is the Lhurgoyf peer; Lightning Bolt and Ghostfire Slice are fixed-damage reach peers.
  • Failure modes: Graveyard hate from Endurance, Keen-Eyed Curator, Dauthi Voidwalker, Nihil Spellbomb, or Boggart Trawler can shrink it; do not overvalue it before card types exist.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in attrition and creature boards; weaker against exile-heavy graveyard plans.

Eldritch Evolution

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, burst creature tutor/conversion spell.
  • Role type: tutor/search; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: As an additional cost sacrifices a creature, then searches for a creature with mana value up to sacrificed creature's mana value plus 2 and puts it onto the battlefield; exiles itself.
  • Timing: Cast when the sacrifice target and searched creature immediately stabilize, disrupt, or close; protect with discard if a counterspell would cost both card and creature.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{G}{G}, a creature, and the spell; outputs a creature directly onto the battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: Turns Birds of Paradise, Ignoble Hierarch, Elves of Deep Shadow, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, or Deathrite Shaman into Cankerbloom, Dauthi Voidwalker, Fauna Shaman, or Orcish Bowmasters; two-drops into Grist, the Hunger Tide, Magus of the Moon, or Wight of the Reliquary; three-drops into Fury, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, or Chaos Defiler if mana value allows.
  • Role peers: Birthing Pod repeats this style; Green Sun's Zenith searches green creatures without sacrifice.
  • Failure modes: Sacrificing your only mana or blocker into countermagic or a low-impact target can lose the game.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Best when a specific creature is decisive against the visible board or matchup.

Elves of Deep Shadow

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana black accelerator.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {B} and deals 1 damage to you, bridging early green into black discard/removal and black-heavy spells.
  • Timing: Cast early; preserve until the hand no longer needs black acceleration, then it can crew, sacrifice, clamp, or block.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G} and later life; outputs black mana and a creature body.
  • Partners / packages: Casts Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, Demonic Tutor, Dauthi Voidwalker, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and Slimefoot and Squee; fuels Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Birthing Pod, and Eldritch Evolution.
  • Role peers: Birds of Paradise, Ignoble Hierarch, and Deathrite Shaman also bridge colors; Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, and Fyndhorn Elves make green only.
  • Failure modes: Repeated self-damage matters against burn/aggro; do not sacrifice it while black mana is still bottlenecked.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in discard-heavy hands; less attractive when life total is under immediate pressure.

Elvish Mystic

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana green accelerator.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides early {G} to power turn-two engines and double-spell starts.
  • Timing: Cast on turn one whenever green acceleration beats discard/removal timing; preserve until mana is stable.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; outputs recurring green mana and later a small sacrifice/clamp/crew body.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Eldritch Evolution, Birthing Pod, Grist, the Hunger Tide, and Slimefoot and Squee.
  • Role peers: Llanowar Elves and Fyndhorn Elves are exact functional peers; Arbor Elf needs Forests but can scale with Auras.
  • Failure modes: Trading or clamping it before casting key spells can strand the hand.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: High keep value in functional opening hands; fragile against one-mana removal.

Emperor of Bones

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, graveyard-tempo role player.
  • Role type: recursion; hate piece; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: At combat on your turn, exiles up to one target card from a graveyard; adapt 2 for {1}{B}; when +1/+1 counters are put on it, it returns a creature card exiled with it to the battlefield under your control with a finality counter, haste, and sacrifice at the next end step.
  • Timing: Exile a high-impact creature before adapting or when denying an opponent's graveyard matters; adapt when the temporary creature swing changes combat, removal, or lethal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes graveyard target, black mana, and timing; outputs a larger creature and temporary reanimated creature.
  • Partners / packages: Works with Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Underground Mortuary, Commercial District, and opposing graveyards; sacrifice the temporary creature to Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, or Phyrexian Tower before end step if profitable.
  • Role peers: Metamorphosis Fanatic returns your creature more permanently; Endurance, Keen-Eyed Curator, and Boggart Trawler overlap on graveyard interaction.
  • Failure modes: Exiling the wrong card may deny your own Slimefoot and Squee or Metamorphosis Fanatic; returned creature is temporary and has a finality counter.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong when graveyards contain powerful creatures; use as hate against recursion but not when your graveyard is the active plan.

Badgermole Cub

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, mana-creature payoff and role-player body.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Earthbends target land you control into a 0/0 land creature with haste and a +1/+1 counter, and whenever you tap a creature for mana, adds an additional {G}.
  • Timing: Cast when you have Birds of Paradise, Elves of Deep Shadow, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Ignoble Hierarch, Llanowar Elves, Delighted Halfling, Deathrite Shaman, or Dryad Arbor ready to tap for mana; avoid earthbending a land that must stay safe.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes two green-side mana; outputs a 2/2, temporary land-creature pressure, and extra green from creature mana activations.
  • Partners / packages: Amplifies Birds of Paradise, Ignoble Hierarch, Delighted Halfling, Arbor Elf, and mana elves; land creature can feed Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Eldritch Evolution, and Wight of the Reliquary.
  • Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Wild Growth/Utopia Sprawl for acceleration and Dryad Arbor for land-creature material.
  • Failure modes: Earthbent land can die as a creature and return tapped; do not expose a critical colored source when mana is tight.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in development mirrors; risky into cheap removal or sweepers that punish animated lands.

Prismatic Vista

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, basic-fetch mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for a basic land card; registered targets are Forest, Snow-Covered Forest, Mountain, and Swamp.
  • Timing: Use early to secure missing basic color or before top-deck tutors; hold for Fatal Push revolt or Deathrite Shaman land fuel when not color-pressed.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop, 1 life, and itself; outputs an untapped basic land.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Magus of the Moon preparation, Deathrite Shaman, Wight of the Reliquary, Barrowgoyf, and Pyrogoyf.
  • Role peers: Other fetches find duals; Prismatic Vista is the cleanest basic fixer.
  • Failure modes: Cannot find dual lands, so it may not solve two colors at once.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against nonbasic hate and when life allows a clean untapped basic.

Fatal Push

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap creature removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Destroys target creature with mana value 2 or less, or mana value 4 or less if revolt is active from a permanent leaving your battlefield this turn.
  • Timing: Use early on mana creatures, snowball threats, and attackers; set up revolt with fetch lands, Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Phyrexian Tower, Birthing Pod, or Eldritch Evolution when a larger target matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {B}; outputs tempo-positive creature removal.
  • Partners / packages: Revolt enablers include Wooded Foothills, Arid Mesa, Windswept Heath, Scalding Tarn, Polluted Delta, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Bloodstained Mire, Verdant Catacombs, Prismatic Vista, and sacrifice outlets.
  • Role peers: Lightning Bolt, Dismember, Snuff Out, Bitter Triumph, and Abrupt Decay cover different target ranges.
  • Failure modes: Cannot hit planeswalkers or high-mana-value creatures without revolt; do not waste revolt if a bigger threat is imminent.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium versus aggro and tempo; weaker against spell combo and creatureless control.

Flare of Malice

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, free-cost edict interaction.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Can sacrifice a nontoken black creature instead of paying {2}{B}{B}; each opponent sacrifices a creature or planeswalker with the greatest mana value among creatures and planeswalkers they control.
  • Timing: Use when the opponent's highest-mana-value creature or planeswalker is the key threat, especially while tapped out via alternate cost.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes mana or a nontoken black creature; outputs forced sacrifice by each opponent among their greatest mana value creatures/planeswalkers.
  • Partners / packages: Alternate-cost fodder includes Orcish Bowmasters, Dauthi Voidwalker, Grief, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Accursed Marauder, Emperor of Bones, Wight of the Reliquary, Barrowgoyf, Boggart Trawler, and Deathrite Shaman if black by rules identity/card color.
  • Role peers: Accursed Marauder and Bitter Triumph overlap, but Flare of Malice can be mana-free.
  • Failure modes: Opponent chooses from eligible tied greatest-mana-value permanents; sacrificing a key black engine creature can cost more than the removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against single large threats and planeswalkers; weaker against low-curve boards with multiple equal threats.

Polluted Delta

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fetch-land mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for an Island or Swamp card; registered Swamp targets are Bayou, Badlands, Blood Crypt, Overgrown Tomb, Underground Mortuary, and Swamp, with no registered Island.
  • Timing: Use for black access, especially turn-one discard or removal; crack before top-card tutors if you need shuffle first.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop, 1 life, and itself; outputs a Swamp-type land and graveyard card.
  • Partners / packages: Enables Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, Demonic Tutor, Dauthi Voidwalker, Snuff Out, Blazemire Verge, and Woodland Cemetery.
  • Role peers: Marsh Flats, Bloodstained Mire, and Verdant Catacombs overlap on Swamp access.
  • Failure modes: Does not find red or green unless the chosen Swamp target also has Mountain or Forest text.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Fetch basic Swamp when preparing for Magus of the Moon and black interaction is needed.

Orcish Bowmasters

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, disruptive flash creature.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; hate piece; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Flashes in, deals 1 damage to any target on entry and whenever an opponent draws a card except the first in each draw step, then amasses Orcs 1.
  • Timing: Hold for extra-draw punishment, a one-toughness creature, planeswalker ping, or surprise blocker; cast proactively if the body and Army token matter.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B}; outputs damage, Orc Army material, and pressure against draw spells.
  • Partners / packages: Bodies feed Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, and Flare of Malice.
  • Role peers: Dauthi Voidwalker and Opposition Agent are disruptive creature peers against different resources.
  • Failure modes: Do not fire it into an empty draw window if holding it can punish a visible card-draw spell; 1 damage may be too small for larger threats.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against blue card draw, cantrips, and small-creature boards; less important against creature-light decks that do not draw extra cards.

Mountain

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, strategically important basic red mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides untapped {R}, gives a basic Mountain for fetches and Oliphaunt Mountaincycling, and preserves red access around Magus of the Moon planning.
  • Timing: Fetch/play when red is needed for Lightning Bolt, Goblin Bombardment, Fury, Broadside Bombardiers, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, or commander colors.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop or search; outputs stable red.
  • Partners / packages: Found by Wooded Foothills, Arid Mesa, Scalding Tarn, Bloodstained Mire, and Oliphaunt.
  • Role peers: Badlands, Blood Crypt, Taiga, Stomping Ground, and Commercial District provide red with other colors but are nonbasic.
  • Failure modes: Does not cast green acceleration or black discard.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Important when Pyroblast or Red Elemental Blast must stay live through nonbasic pressure.

Goblin Bombardment

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core sacrifice-damage engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; reach/finisher; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Sacrifices creatures to deal 1 damage to any target, turning Saprolings, mana creatures, tokens, and dying creatures into reach or board control.
  • Timing: Commit when you have material or when removal/exile makes sacrifice conversion important; hold if the board has no fodder and mana is needed for interaction.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R} and creatures; outputs repeatable damage to creatures, planeswalkers, or opponent.
  • Partners / packages: Best with Slimefoot and Squee Saprolings, Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Phyrexian Tower, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes Boo tokens, Broadside Bombardiers, and recursive creatures.
  • Role peers: Broadside Bombardiers offers larger once-per-turn sacrifice damage; Yawgmoth, Thran Physician converts creatures into cards/-1/-1 counters.
  • Failure modes: Nonlethal face pings that consume mana creatures or commander fuel can lose long games; preserve blockers under lethal pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in creature mirrors, planeswalker fights, and low-life races; weaker when graveyard/exile hate prevents rebuilding material.

Metamorphosis Fanatic

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, high-end reanimation stabilizer.
  • Role type: recursion; lifegain/stabilization; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: A 4/4 lifelink creature that returns up to one target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield with a lifelink counter on entry; miracle {1}{B} if it is the first card drawn this turn.
  • Timing: Hard-cast when six mana is available and a good graveyard creature exists; miracle when the early discount returns a meaningful creature or stabilizes life.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes six mana or miracle {1}{B}; outputs 4/4 lifelink plus reanimated creature with a lifelink counter.
  • Mode map: Hard-cast is expensive but reliable late-game recursion; miracle is a first-draw timing opportunity that trades surprise discount for needing the card drawn first that turn.
  • Partners / packages: Returns Chaos Defiler, Fury, Grief, Endurance, Broadside Bombardiers, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Barrowgoyf, or Wight of the Reliquary.
  • Role peers: Slimefoot and Squee is repeatable recursion; Emperor of Bones is temporary graveyard use.
  • Failure modes: No good graveyard target makes it mostly a six-mana lifelinker; miracle timing can be missed if you draw through another effect first.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against aggro and removal-heavy decks; vulnerable to graveyard hate.

Hexing Squelcher

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, anti-permission/protection role player.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: This spell can't be countered, spells you control can't be countered, and other creatures you control have Ward—Pay 2 life.
  • Timing: Cast before a key engine or creature-heavy turn against permission; deploy as a 2/2 when ward pressure taxes opposing spot removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs an uncounterable body, uncounterable future spells while it remains, and life-tax ward for other creatures.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Slimefoot and Squee, Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Fauna Shaman, and creature chains.
  • Role peers: Delighted Halfling protects legendary spells; sideboard Veil of Summer, Pyroblast, and Red Elemental Blast protect specific stack fights.
  • Failure modes: Ward does not protect Hexing Squelcher itself and does not stop sweepers, edicts, or non-targeting removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against blue control and targeted removal; less impactful against creature swarms or non-targeting sweepers.

Grist, the Hunger Tide

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, planeswalker engine and creature-density payoff.
  • Role type: engine piece; interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
  • Deck-specific job: Off battlefield it is a 1/1 Insect creature in addition to other types; on battlefield it makes Insect tokens and mills, can sacrifice a creature to destroy target creature or planeswalker, and can make each opponent lose life equal to creature cards in your graveyard.
  • Timing: Cast when a token engine or removal line matters; use -2 when sacrificing a low-value creature answers a real threat.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B}{G} and loyalty; outputs tokens, graveyard fuel, removal, or graveyard-count life loss.
  • Mode map: +1 builds material and mills; -2 converts a creature into removal; -5 is a finisher when creature cards in your graveyard create lethal or near-lethal life loss.
  • Partners / packages: Tokens feed Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Birthing Pod, and Eldritch Evolution; creature typing works with creature tutors outside battlefield.
  • Role peers: Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes is the other planeswalker engine; Accursed Marauder and Bitter Triumph overlap on creature removal.
  • Failure modes: Milling can expose you to graveyard hate; protecting Grist with key creatures may be worse than advancing board.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in fair creature games; weaker when opponents pressure planeswalkers cleanly or graveyard count is suppressed.

Llanowar Elves

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana green accelerator.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {G}, enabling early engines and commander turns.
  • Timing: Cast turn one when it accelerates your hand; after mana stabilizes, it can become sacrifice, clamp, crew, or attack material.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; outputs green mana and a 1/1 body.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Eldritch Evolution, Birthing Pod, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, and Slimefoot and Squee.
  • Role peers: Elvish Mystic and Fyndhorn Elves are functional peers.
  • Failure modes: Do not trade it off before confirming the next turn still casts black/red-green spells.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Key in opening hands; weak topdeck when you need interaction unless sacrifice engines are active.

Detective's Phoenix

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, recursive evasive pressure.
  • Role type: threat/clock; mechanic payoff; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: A 2/2 flying haste enchantment creature with bestow {R}, collect evidence 6; bestowed from graveyard by paying red and exiling cards with total mana value 6 or greater from your graveyard to give enchanted creature +2/+2, flying, and haste.
  • Timing: Cast as a creature when immediate flying haste damage matters; bestow from graveyard when a larger attacker, commander, or goyf needs evasion and haste.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes three mana as creature or red plus graveyard mana value as bestow; outputs evasive pressure or an Aura-like upgrade.
  • Mode map: Creature mode is a standalone 2/2 flying haste; bestow mode from hand or graveyard makes another creature hit harder and fly, but consumes graveyard cards needed by Slimefoot and Squee, Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, and Wight of the Reliquary.
  • Partners / packages: Strong on Barrowgoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, Slimefoot and Squee, Broadside Bombardiers, and Boo from Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes.
  • Role peers: Smuggler's Copter also gives flying pressure; Headliner Scarlett creates unblockable-turn pressure.
  • Failure modes: Collect evidence can exile key recursion targets; do not shrink graveyard threats unless evasion converts to lethal or a decisive planeswalker hit.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in stalled boards and against control; poor through graveyard hate or when red is scarce.

Keen-Eyed Curator

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, graveyard hate threat.
  • Role type: hate piece; threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Exiles target card from a graveyard for {1}; if four or more card types are among cards exiled with it, it gets +4/+4 and trample.
  • Timing: Use early exile activations to disrupt key graveyard resources or build toward four card types; do not consume your own needed recursion cards without purpose.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes mana and graveyard cards; outputs targeted graveyard pressure and potentially a 7/7 trampler.
  • Partners / packages: Can exile opposing instants/sorceries for delve/flashback denial, creatures for reanimation denial, lands for Deathrite Shaman tension, and varied card types to grow itself.
  • Role peers: Deathrite Shaman, Endurance, Dauthi Voidwalker, Boggart Trawler, Nihil Spellbomb, and Grafdigger's Cage overlap on graveyard pressure.
  • Failure modes: Exiling your own creature can weaken Slimefoot and Squee, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Barrowgoyf, and Wight of the Reliquary.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus graveyard decks; in fair matchups, activate only when growth or denial matters.

Grove of the Burnwillows

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, red-green painless fixing with opponent life drawback.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {C} or for {R}/{G} while each opponent gains 1 life.
  • Timing: Use colored mode when it casts a relevant spell; prefer colorless when the life point changes lethal math and color is not needed.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs red/green/colorless and may give opponent life.
  • Partners / packages: Casts Lightning Bolt, Goblin Bombardment, Fury, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Green Sun's Zenith, and Slimefoot and Squee.
  • Role peers: Copperline Gorge, Stomping Ground, Taiga, and Commercial District are red-green peers without the same life-gain trigger.
  • Failure modes: Giving life can undo Lightning Bolt, Ghostfire Slice, Goblin Bombardment, and Broadside Bombardiers lethal math.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Fine for development; be careful in races and burn-reach endgames.

Inquisition of Kozilek

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap proactive discard.
  • Role type: interaction-discard.
  • Deck-specific job: Target player reveals their hand; you choose a nonland card with mana value 3 or less and they discard it.
  • Timing: Use early to take cheap removal, fast pressure, combo setup, or counterspells before committing engines.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {B}; outputs hand information and removes a low-cost nonland.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Birthing Pod, Goblin Bombardment, Slimefoot and Squee, and Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes.
  • Role peers: Thoughtseize hits any nonland at 2 life; Duress hits noncreature nonland; Grief is creature discard with evoke.
  • Failure modes: Cannot take high-mana-value sweepers or expensive haymakers; do not cast after the opponent has emptied relevant low-cost cards.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus tempo, combo, and cheap interaction; weaker against top-heavy big mana.

Lazotep Quarry

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, utility sacrifice land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; recursion; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {C}, taps and sacrifices a creature for one mana of any color, or pays {X}{2}, taps, and sacrifices a Desert to exile target creature card with mana value X from your graveyard and create a 4/4 black Zombie token copy at sorcery speed.
  • Timing: Use sacrifice mana when a body unlocks a key spell this turn; use token-copy mode only when the graveyard creature is worth exiling and the Desert sacrifice is acceptable.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop, creatures, and possibly itself as the only registered Desert; outputs mana fixing or a 4/4 Zombie copy.
  • Mode map: Mana mode is creature-to-any-color fixing; Zombie-copy mode is sorcery-speed graveyard conversion that exiles the chosen creature card and sacrifices a Desert.
  • Partners / packages: Sacrifice fodder includes Saprolings, Dryad Arbor, spent elves, Boo, and Insects; copy targets include Chaos Defiler, Fury, Grief, Endurance, Metamorphosis Fanatic, and Barrowgoyf.
  • Role peers: Phyrexian Tower is stronger black sacrifice mana; Slimefoot and Squee and Metamorphosis Fanatic recur creatures without making a 4/4 copy.
  • Failure modes: Exiling the creature prevents later commander or Fanatic recursion; sacrificing your only Desert usually means sacrificing Lazotep Quarry itself.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable in attrition; risky when graveyard resources are contested.

Ignoble Hierarch

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana Jund accelerator.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {B}, {R}, or {G} and gives exalted to a lone attacker.
  • Timing: Cast early; attack alone with Dauthi Voidwalker, Detective's Phoenix, Barrowgoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, or Slimefoot and Squee when exalted damage matters and the Hierarch is not needed for mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; outputs any Jund color and occasional +1/+1 combat boost.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Slimefoot and Squee, Goblin Bombardment, Demonic Tutor, Abrupt Decay, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Culling Ritual, Feed the Swarm, and Veil of Summer.
  • Role peers: Birds of Paradise fixes any color and flies; Delighted Halfling protects legendary spells.
  • Failure modes: Tapping it to attack or crew before mana is stable can strand multicolor spells.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in keepable hands; exalted matters in stalled boards or shadow/flying races.

Headliner Scarlett

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, haste pressure and temporary combat-access threat.
  • Role type: threat/clock; protection/evasion; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Haste 3/3 that makes creatures target player controls unable to block this turn on entry, then at your upkeep exiles the top card face down and lets you look at and play it that turn.
  • Timing: Cast when a no-block turn converts into planeswalker kill, lethal, or a large attack; deploy earlier against control if the upkeep card access is likely to survive.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes four mana including red; outputs immediate attack, one-turn blocker denial for target player, and ongoing temporary card access.
  • Partners / packages: Enables attacks from Barrowgoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, Slimefoot and Squee, Broadside Bombardiers, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes Boo, and Detective's Phoenix.
  • Role peers: Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes and Frenzied Baloth also offer haste pressure; no direct peer for no-block entry.
  • Failure modes: Targeting the wrong player or casting postcombat wastes the entry combat effect; exiled upkeep card must be played that turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against board stalls and planeswalkers; weaker when removal kills it before upkeep and no immediate attack matters.

Llanowar Wastes

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, black-green pain land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {C} or {B}/{G} with 1 damage to you for colored mana.
  • Timing: Use colored mana when it enables key spells; use colorless when life matters and generic costs are enough.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs black, green, or colorless at life cost for colored mana.
  • Partners / packages: Casts Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, Survival of the Fittest, Abrupt Decay, Demonic Tutor, and Slimefoot and Squee.
  • Role peers: Blooming Marsh, Woodland Cemetery, Bayou, and Overgrown Tomb cover black-green with different tempo/life profiles.
  • Failure modes: Repeated damage compounds with fetches, shocks, Thoughtseize, Dismember, Snuff Out, and Bitter Triumph.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Manage carefully against burn and aggro; excellent flexible untapped source otherwise.

Grief

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, disruptive creature and pitch discard.
  • Role type: interaction-discard; threat/clock; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Menace 3/2 that makes target opponent reveal their hand and discard a nonland card you choose; can evoke by exiling a black card from your hand.
  • Timing: Evoke when stripping a key card is worth the pitch cost or when recursion/sacrifice can reuse the body; hard-cast when a menace clock plus discard matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes four mana or a black card; outputs hand information, discard, body, graveyard material, and possible sacrifice trigger timing.
  • Mode map: Hard-cast gives a lasting 3/2 menace; evoke gives a temporary discard body that dies unless converted or reanimated.
  • Partners / packages: Recurs with Slimefoot and Squee or Metamorphosis Fanatic; can be converted by Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Phyrexian Tower, Birthing Pod, or Eldritch Evolution.
  • Role peers: Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, and Duress are cheaper discard peers.
  • Failure modes: Pitching the only black card or key engine card for a low-impact discard is costly.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against combo/control; weaker against empty-handed aggro unless body matters.

Marsh Flats

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fetch-land mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for a Plains or Swamp card; registered Swamp targets are Bayou, Badlands, Blood Crypt, Overgrown Tomb, Underground Mortuary, and Swamp, with no registered Plains.
  • Timing: Use when black access or black-green/black-red dual access is needed.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop, 1 life, and itself; outputs a Swamp-type land and a graveyard card.
  • Partners / packages: Turns on Snuff Out, Blazemire Verge, Woodland Cemetery, Deathrite Shaman, Fatal Push revolt, and graveyard-size threats.
  • Role peers: Polluted Delta, Bloodstained Mire, and Verdant Catacombs overlap on Swamp access.
  • Failure modes: Does not find basic Forest or Mountain; choose a dual if green/red access matters.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Fetch basic Swamp before Magus of the Moon if black spells are critical.

Dauthi Voidwalker

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, graveyard hate and evasive threat.
  • Role type: hate piece; threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Shadow 3/2 that replaces opponent graveyard entries by exiling them with void counters, then can tap and sacrifice to play one exiled card an opponent owns without paying its mana cost this turn.
  • Timing: Deploy early against graveyard decks or attrition; sacrifice only when the exiled spell is worth losing the hate body and shadow clock.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {B}{B}; outputs graveyard denial, evasive pressure, and potential free spell access.
  • Partners / packages: Protects discard/removal plans by exiling cards hit by Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, Grief, removal, and combat trades.
  • Role peers: Endurance, Keen-Eyed Curator, Boggart Trawler, Nihil Spellbomb, and Grafdigger's Cage are graveyard peers.
  • Failure modes: It also prevents opposing cards from reaching graveyards for Deathrite Shaman, Barrowgoyf, and Pyrogoyf sizing; double black can strain mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus graveyard and spell decks; use shadow clock to pressure planeswalkers/life totals.

Green Sun's Zenith

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, green creature search spell.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Searches for a green creature card with mana value X or less, puts it onto the battlefield, then shuffles itself into the library.
  • Timing: Use X=0 for Dryad Arbor acceleration only when that line is correct; later find the green creature that solves the board.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {X}{G}; outputs a green creature directly onto battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: Targets include Dryad Arbor, Arbor Elf, Birds of Paradise, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Ignoble Hierarch, Cankerbloom, Fauna Shaman, Keen-Eyed Curator, Endurance, Frenzied Baloth, Wight of the Reliquary, and Slimefoot and Squee.
  • Role peers: Worldly Tutor finds any creature to top; Eldritch Evolution puts any creature within range onto battlefield with sacrifice.
  • Failure modes: Cannot find non-green hate such as Opposition Agent, Orcish Bowmasters, Dauthi Voidwalker, Fury, or Magus of the Moon; Grafdigger's Cage stops library-to-battlefield creature entry.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Flexible across matchups; choose hate over greed when opponent's axis is visible.

Misty Rainforest

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fetch-land mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Pays 1 life and sacrifices to search for a Forest or Island card; registered Forest targets include Bayou, Commercial District, Overgrown Tomb, Stomping Ground, Taiga, Forest, Snow-Covered Forest, and Dryad Arbor, with no registered Island.
  • Timing: Use for early green and dual access; fetch before top-card tutor setup unless preserving shuffle.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop, 1 life, and itself; outputs a Forest-type land and graveyard card.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Deathrite Shaman, Wight of the Reliquary, and goyf sizing.
  • Role peers: Wooded Foothills, Windswept Heath, and Verdant Catacombs overlap on Forest access.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Fetch basics when preparing for Magus of the Moon or nonbasic hate.

Fyndhorn Elves

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana green accelerator.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {G} to speed up turn-two engines and three-color commander lines.
  • Timing: Cast early unless discard/removal is more urgent; later convert to sacrifice/clamp/crew material only when mana is stable.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; outputs recurring green and a small body.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Eldritch Evolution, Birthing Pod, Grist, the Hunger Tide, and Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes.
  • Role peers: Elvish Mystic and Llanowar Elves are functional peers.
  • Failure modes: Vulnerable to cheap removal and sweepers; do not keep one-land elf hands without a plan if removal is likely.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in functional openers; low-impact topdeck unless engines need fodder.

Starting Town

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, early untapped fixing land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Enters tapped unless it is your first, second, or third turn; taps for {C} or pays 1 life to add one mana of any color.
  • Timing: Strong in the first three turns when it enters untapped and fixes all colors; later it can be a tapped liability.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop; outputs colorless or any color at a life cost.
  • Partners / packages: Casts early Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, mana creatures, Survival of the Fittest, Goblin Bombardment, and Slimefoot and Squee.
  • Role peers: Command Tower fixes without life in this color identity; Llanowar Wastes and Grove of the Burnwillows have narrower color/life tradeoffs.
  • Failure modes: Late tapped entry can block interaction; repeated life payments matter with fetches, shocks, Dismember, Snuff Out, and Bitter Triumph.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in opening hands; against aggro, use colorless when possible to preserve life.

Oliphaunt

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, landcycling red top-end threat.
  • Role type: tutor/search; threat/clock; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Usually fixes mana with Mountaincycling {1}; hard-cast as a 6/4 trample that gives another target creature +2/+0 and trample when it attacks.
  • Timing: Cycle early if missing red/dual access; hard-cast only when six mana and combat pressure matter more than using it as graveyard or pitch material.
  • Inputs / outputs: Cycling consumes {1} and discards Oliphaunt to search for a Mountain card, reveal it, put it into hand, then shuffle; hard-cast consumes {5}{R} and outputs a trampling attacker.
  • Mode map: Mountaincycling can find registered Mountain cards Badlands, Blood Crypt, Commercial District, Stomping Ground, Taiga, or Mountain; creature mode is a late attacker and trample enabler.
  • Partners / packages: Cycling puts a creature in graveyard for Slimefoot and Squee, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Wight of the Reliquary, Barrowgoyf, and Pyrogoyf.
  • Role peers: Boggart Trawler is another land-access/multi-aspect card; no other main card searches Mountain to hand.
  • Failure modes: Do not call cycling card draw; it searches, reveals, puts a Mountain card into hand, then shuffles.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Cycle in mana-light openers; cast in slow games where trample pressure closes.

Fury

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, creature-board swing and red pitch threat.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Double strike 3/3 that deals 4 damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures and/or planeswalkers on entry; can evoke by exiling a red card from your hand.
  • Timing: Evoke when clearing multiple creatures or a planeswalker is worth the red card; hard-cast when body plus removal matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes five mana or a red card; outputs divided damage and possibly a double-strike body.
  • Mode map: Hard-cast leaves a 3/3 double striker; evoke gives a temporary removal body that can be sacrificed or recurred before it leaves.
  • Partners / packages: Red pitch cards include Lightning Bolt, Goblin Bombardment, Pyrogoyf, Broadside Bombardiers, Headliner Scarlett, Frenzied Baloth, Ghostfire Slice, Magus of the Moon, and Oliphaunt; recur with Slimefoot and Squee or Metamorphosis Fanatic.
  • Role peers: Lightning Bolt, Ghostfire Slice, and Pyrogoyf also deal damage; Culling Ritual is the sideboard mass-reset peer.
  • Failure modes: Cannot target players with its enter damage; dividing damage poorly can leave key creatures alive.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium versus go-wide and planeswalkers; less useful against creatureless combo/control unless pitch pressure is needed.

Overgrown Tomb

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, shock dual mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Swamp Forest source for {B} or {G}, optionally paying 2 life to enter untapped.

  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop/fetch and sometimes 2 life; outputs black or green and Swamp/Forest typing.
  • Partners / packages: Found by Forest/Swamp fetches; supports Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, Snuff Out, Woodland Cemetery, Wastewood Verge, and Blazemire Verge.
  • Role peers: Bayou is the no-life peer; Underground Mortuary enters tapped with surveil.
  • Failure modes: Life payment compounds with other paid-life cards; no red access.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Important for early discard plus green engine starts.

Phyrexian Tower

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, sacrifice mana utility land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {C} or taps and sacrifices a creature to add {B}{B}, converting expendable creatures into black mana bursts.
  • Timing: Use sacrifice mode when it casts a decisive spell now or converts a dying creature; avoid sacrificing needed mana, blockers, or commander fuel.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and potentially a creature; outputs colorless or two black mana.
  • Partners / packages: Sacrifice fodder includes Saprolings, Dryad Arbor, spent elves, Boo, Insects, and evoked Grief/Fury; enables Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Demonic Tutor, Metamorphosis Fanatic, and Flare of Malice.
  • Role peers: Lazotep Quarry also sacrifices creatures for mana, but Tower gives {B}{B} without colored-spell restriction.
  • Failure modes: Sacrificing your only green/red source equivalent body can strand spells; legendary land can be vulnerable to land interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in explosive engine turns and removal response windows.

Bitter Triumph

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, broad instant creature/planeswalker removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: As additional cost, discard a card or pay 3 life; destroys target creature or planeswalker.
  • Timing: Use when a creature or planeswalker must die and narrower removal cannot handle it; choose discard when life is pressured and the discarded card has graveyard value.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B} plus a card or 3 life; outputs unconditional creature/planeswalker destruction.
  • Partners / packages: Discarding creatures can fuel Slimefoot and Squee, Metamorphosis Fanatic, Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, and Detective's Phoenix.
  • Role peers: Dismember, Snuff Out, Fatal Push, Abrupt Decay, Flare of Malice, and Lightning Bolt cover narrower removal jobs.
  • Failure modes: Paying 3 life into a short clock can be worse than discarding; discarding the only answer/land/engine piece can break the hand.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable against planeswalkers and large creatures; be life-disciplined against aggro/burn.

Endurance

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash graveyard reset and reach blocker.
  • Role type: hate piece; interaction-removal; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Flash reach 3/4 that makes up to one target player put all cards from their graveyard on the bottom of their library in a random order; can evoke by exiling a green card.
  • Timing: Hold for graveyard commitment, self-decking pressure, reanimation/delve/escape windows before costs or spells resolve, or surprise blocking; hard-cast when body matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes three mana or a green card; outputs graveyard reset and a 3/4 reach body if not evoked.
  • Mode map: Hard-cast leaves a body; evoke gives instant-speed graveyard reset at card disadvantage unless recursion/sacrifice uses the body.
  • Partners / packages: Green pitch cards include Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Green Sun's Zenith, Cankerbloom, Wight of the Reliquary, Frenzied Baloth, Worldly Tutor, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, and green mana creatures.
  • Role peers: Keen-Eyed Curator, Deathrite Shaman, Dauthi Voidwalker, Boggart Trawler, Nihil Spellbomb, and Grafdigger's Cage are graveyard peers.
  • Failure modes: Resetting your own graveyard can shrink Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, Wight of the Reliquary, and shut off commander recursion.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium versus graveyard decks and flyers; weaker when graveyards are irrelevant.

Duress

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, noncreature proactive discard.
  • Role type: interaction-discard.
  • Deck-specific job: Target opponent reveals their hand; you choose a noncreature, nonland card and they discard it.
  • Timing: Use before key engine turns, against combo/control, or when a noncreature hate/removal card is the likely issue.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {B}; outputs hand information and removes a noncreature nonland.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, and sideboard hate.
  • Role peers: Thoughtseize is broader with life loss; Inquisition of Kozilek hits cheap nonlands including creatures; Grief is a creature discard effect.
  • Failure modes: Misses creatures, lands, and already-resolved threats; do not cast when the board demands immediate creature removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control/combo; often cut or deprioritized against creature swarms.

Opposition Agent

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash anti-search hate creature.
  • Role type: hate piece; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: With flash, lets you control opponents while they're searching libraries; while they search, they exile each card they find, and you may play those cards for as long as they remain exiled using mana as though any color.
  • Timing: Hold for visible fetch, tutor, ramp, or library-search windows when possible; cast proactively only if pressure or surprise-blocking matters more.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{B}; outputs search denial, stolen card access, and a 3/2 body.
  • Partners / packages: Protected by Thoughtseize, Duress, Inquisition of Kozilek, Grief, Veil of Summer; pressure with Dauthi Voidwalker and Orcish Bowmasters.
  • Role peers: Dauthi Voidwalker steals exiled cards from graveyard replacement; Aven Mindcensor-style effect is absent, so no direct peer.
  • Failure modes: Firing into no search window may let opponent play around it; it does not stop cards already found or searches that have resolved.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus fetch-heavy, tutor, and big-mana decks; lower value against low-search aggro.

Demonic Tutor

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, unrestricted sorcery tutor.
  • Role type: tutor/search.
  • Deck-specific job: Searches for any card, puts it into your hand, then shuffles; finds the exact missing role rather than the flashiest card.
  • Timing: Cast when you can use the found card before opponent punishes the tempo, or when hand/board state clearly defines the target.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B} and sorcery speed; outputs any registered card to hand.
  • Partners / packages: High-priority targets include Survival of the Fittest, Goblin Bombardment, Birthing Pod, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Boseiju, Who Endures, Fatal Push, Abrupt Decay, Endurance, and boarded Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Force of Vigor, Collector Ouphe, Nihil Spellbomb, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, Culling Ritual, Feed the Swarm, or Veil of Summer.
  • Role peers: Tainted Pact is instant but exiles; Worldly Tutor and Green Sun's Zenith are creature-limited.
  • Failure modes: Tutoring for a slow engine while dying to board pressure wastes the best card in deck.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: In combo/control find disruption or protected engine; in aggro find removal/stabilization.

Dismember

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flexible instant creature debuff removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Target creature gets -5/-5 until end of turn; Phyrexian black mana can be paid with {B} or 2 life each.
  • Timing: Use when -5/-5 kills or shrinks through indestructible-style damage prevention better than damage; preserve life against burn/aggro.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B/P}{B/P}, often 2-4 life; outputs temporary -5/-5 to one target creature.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Fatal Push, Snuff Out, Bitter Triumph, Lightning Bolt, Abrupt Decay, and Fury.
  • Role peers: Snuff Out is free with Swamp but cannot hit black creatures; Bitter Triumph hits planeswalkers too.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against large creatures and combat math; use cautiously when life is under pressure.

Deathrite Shaman

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, graveyard mana/reach/stabilization creature.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; hate piece; reach/finisher; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: Exiles target land from a graveyard for any-color mana, exiles target instant or sorcery for opponent life loss, or exiles target creature for life gain.
  • Timing: Deploy early when fetch lands or opposing lands make mana reliable; use drain/gain modes when racing or denying graveyard resources matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes graveyard cards and sometimes {B} or {G}; outputs mana, 2 life drain, or 2 life gain.
  • Mode map: Land-exile mode ramps/fixes; instant/sorcery-exile mode closes games; creature-exile mode stabilizes life and denies reanimation.
  • Partners / packages: Fetch lands fuel mana; discard/removal fill opposing graveyard; pairs with Dauthi Voidwalker, Keen-Eyed Curator, and Endurance but competes for graveyard cards.
  • Role peers: Birds of Paradise and Ignoble Hierarch are more reliable color dorks; Keen-Eyed Curator is repeatable graveyard exile without tapping.
  • Failure modes: No target land means no mana; graveyard exile can shrink Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, and Wight of the Reliquary.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in fetch-heavy and graveyard matchups; weaker when graveyards are empty or replacement effects prevent cards entering.

Copperline Gorge

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fast red-green mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.

Broadside Bombardiers

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, sacrifice reach threat.
  • Role type: reach/finisher; threat/clock; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: Menace haste 2/2 with boast: after it attacks, once each turn, sacrifice another creature or artifact to deal damage equal to 2 plus the sacrificed permanent's mana value to any target.
  • Timing: Attack when it survives or damage output matters immediately; activate boast only when the sacrificed permanent's value justifies the damage.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes three mana, combat attack, and another creature/artifact; outputs large damage to any target.
  • Partners / packages: Sacrifice material includes Saprolings, Boo, Insects, Dryad Arbor, spent elves, Skullclamp, Smuggler's Copter, and high-mana-value creatures if lethal.

  • Failure modes: Cannot boast without attacking, and only once each turn; sacrificing engine artifacts or necessary blockers for nonlethal damage is costly.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong for finishing planeswalkers/opponents and converting clogged boards; risky into instant removal before combat damage.

Boseiju, Who Endures

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, land and channel interaction.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; mana/fixing/ramp; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps for {G} or channels for {1}{G} by discarding it to destroy target artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land an opponent controls; that player may search for a land with a basic land type and put it onto the battlefield.
  • Timing: Play as land if green is needed; hold as channel when a visible artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land is likely to decide the game.
  • Inputs / outputs: Land mode outputs green; channel consumes Boseiju from hand and mana, outputs uncounterable-by-normal-spell removal and may give opponent a typed land.
  • Mode map: Land mode is ordinary green source; channel mode is instant-speed artifact/enchantment/nonbasic-land answer, costing {1} less for each legendary creature you control, including Slimefoot and Squee, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Headliner Scarlett, and Minsc & Boo's Boo token if present.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Cankerbloom, Abrupt Decay, Force of Vigor, and Feed the Swarm.

  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; outputs any color, flying blocker/crew body, and later sacrifice material.
  • Partners / packages: Casts Slimefoot and Squee, Dauthi Voidwalker, Goblin Bombardment, Abrupt Decay, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Force of Vigor, Collector Ouphe, Culling Ritual, Feed the Swarm, and Veil of Summer.
  • Role peers: Ignoble Hierarch fixes Jund and gives exalted; Delighted Halfling protects legendary spells.
  • Failure modes: As a 0/1 it dies easily and cannot attack meaningfully without buffs.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: High-value opener; against flyers, can sometimes block but usually mana matters more.

Wight of the Reliquary

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, graveyard-scaling land tutor creature.
  • Role type: tutor/search; threat/clock; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: Vigilance 2/2 that gets +1/+1 for each creature card in your graveyard and can tap, sacrifice another creature, and search your library for a land card onto the battlefield tapped.
  • Timing: Cast when graveyard creatures or land utility matter; activate when sacrificing another creature finds a decisive land or fixes mana without losing critical material.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {B}{G}, graveyard creature count, another creature, and tap; outputs any land tapped.
  • Partners / packages: Finds Boseiju, Who Endures, Phyrexian Tower, Lazotep Quarry, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, Command Tower, missing duals, or basics; sacrifice material includes Saprolings, Dryad Arbor, Boo, Insects, and spent elves.
  • Role peers: Elvish Reclaimer-style direct peer absent; Demonic Tutor can find lands but costs a card.
  • Failure modes: Summoning sickness delays activation; graveyard hate shrinks it; sacrificing a key creature for a tapped land can be too slow.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in grindy games and mana-sensitive boards; good route to Boseiju, Who Endures against hate.

Barrowgoyf

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, graveyard-scaling lifelink threat.
  • Role type: threat/clock; lifegain/stabilization; mechanic payoff; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Deathtouch lifelink Lhurgoyf whose power equals card types among all graveyards and toughness equals that number plus 1; on combat damage to a player, you may mill that many cards and may put a creature card milled this way into your hand.
  • Timing: Deploy when graveyards have multiple card types or when lifelink/deathtouch stabilizes combat; attack when connecting is realistic.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes three mana; outputs scalable threat, life gain, graveyard fill, and potential creature card to hand.
  • Partners / packages: Supports Pyrogoyf Lhurgoyf trigger, Detective's Phoenix evasion, Headliner Scarlett no-block turn, removal clearing blockers, and graveyard engines.
  • Role peers: Pyrogoyf is the damage Lhurgoyf peer; Wight of the Reliquary is the creature-graveyard scaling peer.
  • Failure modes: Graveyard hate shrinks it; milling can expose key cards to exile or fail if no creature appears.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against creature decks and races; weaker against exile-heavy control.

Badlands

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premium black-red dual mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Swamp Mountain source for untapped {B} or {R} without life payment.
  • Timing: Fetch/play when black-red interaction or commander colors are needed.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop/fetch; outputs black/red and Swamp/Mountain typing.
  • Partners / packages: Found by Swamp/Mountain fetches; turns on Snuff Out, Blazemire Verge, Woodland Cemetery, and red/black spells.
  • Role peers: Blood Crypt is shock peer; Blackcleave Cliffs is fast-land peer without types.
  • Failure modes: Does not provide green; vulnerable to nonbasic hate and Magus of the Moon.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Important for discard plus red removal starts.

Arbor Elf

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, Forest-untap accelerator.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps to untap target Forest, effectively producing mana from Forest, Snow-Covered Forest, Bayou, Taiga, Overgrown Tomb, Stomping Ground, Commercial District, Underground Mortuary, Dryad Arbor, or lands made Forests by Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth.
  • Timing: Cast early when a Forest is available; highest value with enchanted Forests.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; outputs extra mana through a Forest untap.
  • Partners / packages: Explodes with Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth.
  • Role peers: Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, and Llanowar Elves make green directly; Arbor Elf scales harder but needs Forests.
  • Failure modes: No Forest means no mana; untapping a land exposed to removal or tap effects can be disrupted.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium in enchanted-land starts; fragile against cheap removal.

Smuggler's Copter

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, filtering evasive Vehicle.
  • Role type: card selection; threat/clock; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: Crew 1 artifact Vehicle with flying; when it attacks or blocks, you may draw a card, then discard a card.
  • Timing: Deploy when expendable creatures can crew without costing mana development; loot when improving hand or discarding graveyard-useful creatures matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes two generic mana and tapped crew power; outputs flying attacks/blocks and draw-then-discard filtering.
  • Mode map: Artifact mode sits as a crewable permanent; animated Vehicle mode attacks/blocks as a 3/3 flyer after crew; loot trigger is optional on attack/block.
  • Partners / packages: Crew with Saprolings, Boo, Insects, spent elves, Dryad Arbor, Orcish Bowmasters Army; discard Grief, Fury, Endurance, Oliphaunt, Detective's Phoenix, or recursion targets when useful.
  • Role peers: Skullclamp and Yawgmoth, Thran Physician also convert small bodies into cards.
  • Failure modes: Collector Ouphe stops crew/activated artifact abilities; do not tap a needed mana creature or blocker to crew casually.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in grindy and evasive races; slower against fast combo.

Abrupt Decay

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, uncounterable cheap permanent removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: Can't be countered and destroys target nonland permanent with mana value 3 or less.
  • Timing: Hold for cheap hate, engines, commanders, creatures, artifacts, enchantments, or planeswalkers that matter; use before they generate repeated value.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {B}{G}; outputs uncounterable destruction of a legal cheap nonland permanent.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Cankerbloom, Boseiju, Who Endures, Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, Bitter Triumph, and sideboard Force of Vigor/Feed the Swarm.
  • Role peers: Assassin's Trophy-style broad peer absent; Boseiju, Who Endures hits artifacts/enchantments/nonbasic lands but gives land.
  • Failure modes: Cannot hit lands or mana value 4+ permanents, and it is not stack interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium versus tempo, hate permanents, cheap commanders, equipment, and low-cost engines.

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core sacrifice-card engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; interaction-removal; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: Protection from Humans; pays 1 life and sacrifices another creature to put a -1/-1 counter on up to one target creature and draw a card; can pay {B}{B} and discard a card to proliferate.
  • Timing: Cast when you have expendable creatures and enough life; activate in response to removal, after blocks, or to shrink/kill creatures while drawing.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes life, creatures, cards, and black mana; outputs cards, -1/-1 counters, and proliferated counters.
  • Mode map: Sacrifice/draw mode is the primary engine and removal tool; proliferate mode grows/shrinks existing counters on Grist, Minsc & Boo, Emperor of Bones, -1/-1 counters, finality counters, or opponent permanents when worthwhile.
  • Partners / packages: Uses Saprolings, Boo, Insects, Dryad Arbor, spent elves, Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Phyrexian Tower, and commander recursion.
  • Role peers: Skullclamp draws cards from creatures; Goblin Bombardment sacrifices for damage.
  • Failure modes: Life payment can be lethal; cannot sacrifice itself to its first ability; protection from Humans does not stop non-Human removal, sweepers, or edicts.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Dominant in creature mirrors; risky against burn and exile-heavy interaction.

Swamp

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, strategically important basic black mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Provides untapped {B}, enables Snuff Out alternate cost, gives a basic Swamp for fetches, and preserves black access around Magus of the Moon.
  • Timing: Fetch/play when black discard/removal is needed or when nonbasic hate is likely.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop or fetch search; outputs black and Swamp typing.
  • Partners / packages: Found by Polluted Delta, Marsh Flats, Bloodstained Mire, Verdant Catacombs, and Prismatic Vista; supports Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, Demonic Tutor, Dauthi Voidwalker, and Snuff Out.
  • Role peers: Bayou, Badlands, Blood Crypt, Overgrown Tomb, and Underground Mortuary add colors but are nonbasic.
  • Failure modes: Does not cast green acceleration or red reach.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Important before Magus of the Moon and against nonbasic hate.

Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, planeswalker finisher and card engine.
  • Role type: threat/clock; engine piece; reach/finisher.
  • Deck-specific job: Makes Boo, a legendary 1/1 red Hamster creature token with trample and haste on entry/upkeep; +1 puts three +1/+1 counters on up to one target creature with trample or haste; -2 sacrifices a creature to deal damage equal to its power to any target and draws that many cards if the sacrificed creature was a Hamster.
  • Timing: Cast when opponent cannot easily remove it before Boo attacks or when -2 immediately kills a threat/planeswalker/opponent.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes four mana; outputs hasty token, counters, damage, cards, and sacrifice material.
  • Mode map: Token creation builds material; +1 grows Boo, Detective's Phoenix, Frenzied Baloth, Oliphaunt, or another trample/haste creature; -2 converts a creature's power to any-target damage and can draw from Boo.
  • Partners / packages: Boo works with Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Phyrexian Tower, Broadside Bombardiers, and Slimefoot and Squee.
  • Role peers: Grist, the Hunger Tide is the other planeswalker engine; Broadside Bombardiers also converts creatures into damage.
  • Failure modes: Do not -2 a non-Hamster for cards; sacrificing your only blocker or engine body without lethal/removal payoff can backfire.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against control/midrange; protect against haste attackers and direct planeswalker pressure.

Frenzied Baloth

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, uncounterable haste/trample pressure.
  • Role type: threat/clock; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: Can't be countered, has trample and haste, makes your creature spells unable to be countered, and says combat damage can't be prevented.
  • Timing: Cast when immediate pressure or anti-countershield for future creature spells matters; use as a fast closer after discard/removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}{G}; outputs a 3/2 trample haste body and creature-spell permission protection.
  • Partners / packages: Protects creature spells Slimefoot and Squee, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Chaos Defiler, Fury, Endurance, Grief, Cankerbloom, and Magus of the Moon.
  • Role peers: Hexing Squelcher protects all spells from counters while alive; Delighted Halfling protects legendary spells.
  • Failure modes: Double green can strain mana; does not protect noncreature spells like Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, or removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against blue permission and damage prevention; less important versus creature removal or sweepers.

Boggart Trawler

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, modal black land/graveyard-hate creature.
  • Role type: modal utility; hate piece; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Front face Boggart Trawler is a {2}{B} 3/1 Goblin that exiles target player's graveyard on entry; back face Boggart Bog is a land that may enter untapped if you pay 3 life and taps for {B}.
  • Timing: Play as land when black mana is required; cast creature side when exiling a graveyard is worth three mana and a body.
  • Inputs / outputs: Land side consumes land drop and possibly 3 life for tempo; creature side consumes {2}{B} and outputs a 3/1 plus target-player graveyard exile.
  • Mode map: Boggart Bog is black mana fixing with a life/tapped choice; Boggart Trawler is sorcery-speed graveyard hate on a creature body.
  • Partners / packages: Creature body feeds Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician; graveyard exile overlaps with Endurance, Dauthi Voidwalker, Keen-Eyed Curator, Nihil Spellbomb.
  • Role peers: Nihil Spellbomb is cheaper graveyard exile; Swamp is safer black mana without life.
  • Failure modes: Reference metadata gives face data but missing full combined Oracle metadata; rely on visible engine legality for exact MDFC play permissions. Paying 3 life is dangerous in races.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus graveyard decks; land side helps keep black-heavy openers.

Multiversal Passage

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, chosen-type fixing land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: As it enters, choose a basic land type, then you may pay 2 life; if you do not, it enters tapped. It is the chosen type.
  • Timing: Choose the basic land type that fixes the current hand and fetch/checkland context; pay 2 life only when untapped mana matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop and optional 2 life; outputs a land with chosen type, with mana ability implied by its chosen basic land type in engine legality.
  • Partners / packages: Can be chosen as Forest for Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, and Wild Growth synergy; Swamp for Snuff Out, Blazemire Verge, Woodland Cemetery; Mountain for red cards and Blazemire Verge.
  • Role peers: Command Tower fixes directly; shock lands provide fixed dual types.
  • Failure modes: Choosing the wrong type can strand future colors; if Card Reference omits explicit tap-mana Oracle beyond type setting, follow engine-presented mana abilities for exact production.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Useful before Magus of the Moon planning if chosen type supports post-Moon basics-style access.

Lightning Bolt

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap damage interaction and reach.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
  • Deck-specific job: Deals 3 damage to any target, killing one- to three-toughness creatures, damaged planeswalkers, or finishing the opponent.
  • Timing: Use on creatures when it preserves life, mana, planeswalkers, or unlocks attacks; aim at opponent only when combat plus burn math makes a short clock or lethal.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs 3 damage to creature, planeswalker, player, or other legal any target.
  • Partners / packages: Pairs with Goblin Bombardment, Broadside Bombardiers, Ghostfire Slice, Fury, Pyrogoyf, and aggressive attacks from Dauthi Voidwalker/Detective's Phoenix.
  • Role peers: Ghostfire Slice deals 4, Fury divides 4 among creatures/planeswalkers, and Pyrogoyf damage scales with card types.
  • Failure modes: Face damage too early can lose to a creature that needed killing; damage is not shrinking and may fail against high toughness or prevention.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium versus aggro/tempo and low-life opponents; less effective against large creatures.

Fauna Shaman

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, creature-tutor engine body.
  • Role type: engine piece; tutor/search; discard outlet.
  • Deck-specific job: Pays {G}, taps, and discards a creature card to search your library for a creature card, reveal it, put it into hand, then shuffle.
  • Timing: Cast when it can survive or when forcing removal is acceptable; activate when the discarded creature has graveyard value or the searched creature solves the next turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes green mana, tap, and creature card; outputs exact creature to hand and graveyard fuel.
  • Partners / packages: Finds Endurance, Opposition Agent, Cankerbloom, Orcish Bowmasters, Magus of the Moon, Fury, Chaos Defiler, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and Metamorphosis Fanatic.
  • Role peers: Survival of the Fittest is faster/repeatable enchantment peer; Worldly Tutor is instant top-deck peer.
  • Failure modes: Summoning sickness and removal make it slower; discarding the wrong creature can break recursion or pitch-resource lines.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in midrange/control; slow against fast combo unless it finds immediate hate.

Dryad Arbor

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, land creature utility and tutor target.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: A land creature Forest Dryad with summoning sickness and {T}: Add {G}, enabling Green Sun's Zenith X=0, fetchable body lines, and sacrifice/clamp material.
  • Timing: Fetch or tutor only when the body or mana is worth exposure; avoid as a vulnerable land under removal-heavy pressure.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes land drop or search target; outputs green mana after summoning sickness and a 1/1 creature body.
  • Partners / packages: Found by Green Sun's Zenith, Wooded Foothills, Windswept Heath, Misty Rainforest, Verdant Catacombs; feeds Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Phyrexian Tower, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Wight of the Reliquary.
  • Role peers: Mana elves provide safer spell-based acceleration; no other land creature in list.
  • Failure modes: Dies to creature removal and summoning sickness affects mana; fetching it at end step exposes a land to removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in engine hands; risky against decks with cheap removal or sweepers.

Snuff Out

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, free black creature removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: If you control a Swamp, you may pay 4 life rather than {3}{B}; destroys target nonblack creature and it can't be regenerated.
  • Timing: Use free mode when the tempo swing prevents more than 4 life of damage or protects a decisive turn; hard-cast when life matters and mana is available.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes mana or 4 life plus Swamp control; outputs destruction of a target nonblack creature.
  • Partners / packages: Swamp sources include Swamp, Bayou, Badlands, Blood Crypt, Overgrown Tomb, Underground Mortuary, and chosen/typed lands if engine grants Swamp.
  • Role peers: Dismember can hit black creatures with -5/-5; Bitter Triumph hits creatures/planeswalkers broadly.
  • Failure modes: Cannot target black creatures; 4 life can be lethal against aggro/burn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against tempo and tap-out engine turns; be disciplined under short clocks.

Magus of the Moon

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, nonbasic-land prison creature.
  • Role type: hate piece; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: Makes nonbasic lands Mountains, potentially stranding opponent colors while also affecting your own nonbasic-heavy mana.
  • Timing: Cast only after securing basics, mana creatures, or colored sources needed for follow-up; use as a lock, not a routine three-drop.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R}; outputs a 2/2 body and global nonbasic-to-Mountain effect.
  • Partners / packages: Prepare with Forest, Snow-Covered Forest, Swamp, Mountain, Birds of Paradise, Ignoble Hierarch, Delighted Halfling, Elves of Deep Shadow, and green mana elves.
  • Role peers: Blood Moon direct peer absent; Opposition Agent and Dauthi Voidwalker are other disruptive creatures.
  • Failure modes: Can lock you off black/green if cast before basics or dorks; nonbasic utility text like Boseiju, Who Endures and Phyrexian Tower stops functioning as printed.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus greedy mana/big mana; weak or dangerous versus basic-heavy aggro.

Ghostfire Slice

  • Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, colorless red-costed reach/removal spell.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
  • Deck-specific job: Devoid instant that costs {2} less if an opponent controls a multicolored permanent and deals 4 damage to any target.
  • Timing: Use as cheap answer/reach when discount is active; otherwise treat {2}{R} as a real mana commitment.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R} or {R} with opponent multicolored permanent; outputs 4 damage to any target.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Lightning Bolt, Goblin Bombardment, Broadside Bombardiers, Fury, Pyrogoyf, and combat damage.
  • Role peers: Lightning Bolt is cheaper for 3; Fury handles multiple creatures/planeswalkers; Pyrogoyf scales with graveyards.
  • Failure modes: Devoid means the spell is colorless, but the cost still includes red; do not assume discount without an opponent-controlled multicolored permanent.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against multicolor commanders/permanents and four-toughness targets; often cut when slow or color-stressed.

Pyroblast

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, anti-blue stack/permanent bullet.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; interaction-removal; sideboard bullet; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Choose one: counter target spell if it's blue, or destroy target permanent if it's blue.
  • Timing: Bring in against blue decks; hold for a decisive blue spell on the stack or blue permanent that blocks your engine.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs conditional counter or blue permanent destruction.
  • Mode map: Counter mode can target any spell but only counters it if it is blue on resolution; destroy mode targets and destroys a blue permanent.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Slimefoot and Squee, Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Fauna Shaman, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes.
  • Role peers: Red Elemental Blast is similar but has stricter target wording; Veil of Summer protects against blue/black interaction differently.
  • Failure modes: Dead against nonblue cards; do not point counter mode at a nonblue spell unless a legal corner case requires it.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Side in for blue control/tempo/combo; avoid against nonblue creature decks.

Red Elemental Blast

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, anti-blue stack/permanent bullet.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; interaction-removal; sideboard bullet; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: Choose one: counter target blue spell, or destroy target blue permanent.
  • Timing: Bring in when blue spells/permanents are central; hold for the blue stack item or permanent that decides the game.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs counter to target blue spell or destruction of target blue permanent.
  • Mode map: Counter mode can only target a blue spell; destroy mode can only target a blue permanent.
  • Partners / packages: Protects engines Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, and commander turns.
  • Role peers: Pyroblast is the closest peer with different target restriction; Veil of Summer protects a turn instead of destroying blue permanents.
  • Failure modes: Cannot legally target nonblue spells/permanents; do not hold forever if countering blue card advantage preserves tempo.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus blue permission and blue commanders; board out/avoid versus nonblue plans.

Force of Vigor

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, free-speed artifact/enchantment sweeper bullet.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Destroys up to two target artifacts and/or enchantments; if it is not your turn, you may exile a green card from hand rather than pay {2}{G}{G}.
  • Timing: Bring in against artifact/enchantment engines, prison, equipment, and graveyard hate; use free mode when the tempo or surprise matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes four mana or a green card on an opponent's turn; outputs up to two destroyed artifacts/enchantments.
  • Partners / packages: Green pitch cards include Worldly Tutor, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Survival of the Fittest, Green Sun's Zenith, Cankerbloom, Endurance, Wight of the Reliquary, Frenzied Baloth, and green mana creatures.
  • Role peers: Cankerbloom, Boseiju, Who Endures, Abrupt Decay, and Feed the Swarm are narrower artifact/enchantment answers.
  • Failure modes: Pitching a green engine for one low-impact target can be card-disadvantage; cannot hit creatures/planeswalkers unless they are artifacts/enchantments.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Side in versus artifact/enchantment clusters and lock pieces; weak versus creature-only decks.

Collector Ouphe

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, artifact-activation hate creature.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Stops activated abilities of artifacts from being activated.
  • Timing: Bring in against artifact mana, equipment, artifact combo, and activated artifact engines; cast when it hurts opponent more than your artifacts.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{G}; outputs a 2/2 body and global artifact activated-ability lock.
  • Partners / packages: Searchable by Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Fauna Shaman, Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, and Eldritch Evolution.
  • Role peers: Pithing Needle stops one named activated source; Force of Vigor destroys artifacts/enchantments outright.
  • Failure modes: Shuts off your own Skullclamp equip, Birthing Pod activation, and Smuggler's Copter crew/loot as artifact activated/trigger context requires engine legality for exact prompts.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against artifact-centric decks; avoid when your artifact engines are the clearest win and opponent has only incidental artifacts.

Nihil Spellbomb

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, graveyard exile artifact bullet.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Taps and sacrifices to exile target player's graveyard; when put into a graveyard from battlefield, you may pay {B} to draw a card.
  • Timing: Deploy early if it must threaten a graveyard window; activate after opponent commits resources but before they can pay flashback/delve/escape/reanimation costs.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}, tap, sacrifice, and optionally {B}; outputs graveyard exile and possible card draw.
  • Partners / packages: Pairs with Dauthi Voidwalker, Endurance, Keen-Eyed Curator, Boggart Trawler, Deathrite Shaman, and Grafdigger's Cage.
  • Role peers: Boggart Trawler and Endurance also hit graveyards; Grafdigger's Cage prevents certain zone movement/casting instead of exiling.
  • Failure modes: It attacks graveyards even though it is an artifact permanent; exiling after flashback/delve costs are paid usually does not counter that already-cast spell.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Side in versus graveyard recursion/combo; be careful when your Slimefoot and Squee, Barrowgoyf, Pyrogoyf, or Detective's Phoenix plan needs your own graveyard.

Grafdigger's Cage

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, graveyard/library-entry hate artifact.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Stops creature cards in graveyards and libraries from entering the battlefield and stops players from casting spells from graveyards or libraries.
  • Timing: Bring in when opponent relies on graveyard casting, reanimation from graveyard/library, or library-to-battlefield creature chains; cast early before the engine begins.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}; outputs static rules restriction.
  • Partners / packages: Combines with Nihil Spellbomb, Dauthi Voidwalker, Endurance, Keen-Eyed Curator, and Pithing Needle against graveyard/creature-combo plans.
  • Role peers: Nihil Spellbomb exiles graveyards; Collector Ouphe stops artifact abilities; Pithing Needle stops named activated abilities.
  • Failure modes: It can interfere with your Slimefoot and Squee, Green Sun's Zenith, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Metamorphosis Fanatic, and Lazotep Quarry creature-entry plans.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus reanimator and library creature cheats; avoid when your commander recursion is the main route and opponent graveyard use is incidental.

Pithing Needle

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, named activated-ability hate artifact.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: As it enters, choose a card name; activated abilities of sources with the chosen name can't be activated unless they are mana abilities.
  • Timing: Bring in against visible commander abilities, planeswalkers, equipment, utility lands, artifacts, or creatures where one activated ability is central.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1} and a correct name choice; outputs static suppression of nonmana activated abilities from that name.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Thoughtseize, Duress, Inquisition of Kozilek, Opposition Agent, Collector Ouphe, and Force of Vigor.
  • Role peers: Collector Ouphe broadly stops artifact activations; Phyrexian Revoker direct creature peer absent.
  • Failure modes: Does not stop mana abilities, triggered abilities, static abilities, or spells; wrong name makes it nearly blank.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus commander-centric or planeswalker decks; choose exposed commander/permanent names, not guesses.

Culling Ritual

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, low-cost permanent sweeper and mana burst.
  • Role type: interaction-sweeper; sideboard bullet; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: Sorcery destroys each nonland permanent with mana value 2 or less, then adds {B} or {G} for each permanent destroyed this way.
  • Timing: Bring in against low-curve permanent floods, tokens with mana value, artifact/enchantment clusters, and go-wide boards; cast when the mana burst has a follow-up or survival requires reset.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{B}{G}; destroys cheap nonland permanents and outputs black/green mana per destroyed permanent.
  • Partners / packages: Follow-up mana can cast Slimefoot and Squee, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, or removal.
  • Role peers: Fury sweeps low-toughness creatures selectively; Goblin Bombardment and Yawgmoth, Thran Physician control boards over time.
  • Failure modes: Destroys your own Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Birds of Paradise, Ignoble Hierarch, Elves of Deep Shadow, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Deathrite Shaman, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, and Dauthi Voidwalker.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus swarm/artifact/enchantment low curves; poor against high-mana threats or when it hurts you more.

Feed the Swarm

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, black sorcery creature/enchantment answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Destroys target creature or enchantment an opponent controls, and you lose life equal to that permanent's mana value.
  • Timing: Bring in for must-answer enchantments or creatures that other removal cannot cover cleanly; cast before the permanent locks combat, graveyards, or engine access.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{B} and life equal to target mana value; outputs destruction of opponent-controlled creature or enchantment.
  • Partners / packages: Complements Abrupt Decay, Cankerbloom, Boseiju, Who Endures, Force of Vigor, and Bitter Triumph.
  • Role peers: Bitter Triumph hits creatures/planeswalkers at instant speed; Cankerbloom hits enchantments on a body.
  • Failure modes: Sorcery speed and life loss are real liabilities; cannot target your own permanents or opponent artifacts unless they are also enchantments.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Side in against enchantment/prison or hard-to-answer creatures; avoid against burn unless target is essential.

Veil of Summer

  • Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, anti-blue/black protection cantrip.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; interaction-stack; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: Draws a card if an opponent has cast a blue or black spell this turn; spells you control can't be countered this turn; you and permanents you control gain hexproof from blue and black until end of turn.
  • Timing: Bring in against blue permission, black discard/removal, and blue-black disruption; cast in response to targeted blue/black interaction or before a decisive spell turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: Consumes {G}; outputs counterproof turn, hexproof from blue/black for you and permanents, and conditional card draw.
  • Partners / packages: Protects Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Birthing Pod, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Slimefoot and Squee, and tutor lines.
  • Role peers: Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast fight blue spells/permanents; Hexing Squelcher and Frenzied Baloth provide permanent anti-counter pressure.
  • Failure modes: Does not stop red/white/colorless interaction, sweepers without targeting, edicts, or abilities outside blue/black; draw requires an opponent to have cast a blue or black spell this turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against control and black removal/discard; avoid against creature decks with little blue/black interaction.

Interaction Priorities

  • Prioritize discard before board development when the opponent can answer Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, or Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes on curve. Thoughtseize may take any visible high-impact card at a life cost; Inquisition of Kozilek should take cheap removal, fast pressure, or low-cost engines; Duress should take noncreature interaction, sweepers, combo pieces, or planeswalkers; Grief should be used when the tempo or information swing is worth the card cost.

  • Remove mana engines and snowballing permanents before ordinary attackers when the opponents next turn becomes materially stronger if they untap. Use Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, Dismember, Snuff Out, Bitter Triumph, Abrupt Decay, Fury, Flare of Malice, Accursed Marauder, and Goblin Bombardment according to legal targets and cost pressure; preserve unconditional answers for threats that cheap damage cannot cover.

  • Answer hate permanents before advancing graveyard or sacrifice engines when they shut off the selected line. Abrupt Decay, Cankerbloom, Boseiju, Who Endures, Force of Vigor, Feed the Swarm, and Culling Ritual are the relevant registered answers after sideboarding; do not spend them on replaceable artifacts or enchantments if a visible lock piece, graveyard hate card, or commander-stopping permanent is present. Card text check required before treating Keen-Eyed Curator as a guaranteed answer.

  • Hold flash or reactive disruption when the opponent is signaling a search, graveyard payoff, draw burst, or stack fight. Opposition Agent is strongest against visible or likely search actions, Endurance is strongest when graveyard timing matters, Orcish Bowmasters is strongest against extra-card draw or small creatures, Veil of Summer protects key green or black turns when sideboarded, and Pyroblast or Red Elemental Blast should be saved for blue spells or blue permanents rather than generic tempo.

  • Use Dauthi Voidwalker, Endurance, Nihil Spellbomb, and Grafdigger's Cage as archetype-specific interaction rather than automatic plays. Against graveyard combo or recursion, deploy or hold them to cover the decisive graveyard window; against fair creature decks, value their body or cantrip utility only if the opportunity cost is low.

  • Bait removal with expendable pressure before committing fragile engines when the hand contains both. Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Elves of Deep Shadow, Birds of Paradise, Ignoble Hierarch, Deathrite Shaman, Smuggler's Copter, Barrowgoyf, or Pyrogoyf can draw interaction; protect Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes unless waiting lets the opponent seize the game.

  • Ignore low-impact chip damage when life remains comfortably above the opponents visible burn or attack range and the trade would consume a key engine creature. Spend removal on cards that change clocks, block sacrifice loops, stop mana, or threaten lethal; do not kill a small attacker just because mana is available if Lightning Bolt, Fatal Push, or Abrupt Decay may be needed for a real engine or blocker.

Combat And Trading Rules

  • Attack when the damage advances a clock without sacrificing mana development, sacrifice infrastructure, or a key blocker. Slimefoot and Squee, Saprolings, mana creatures, Dryad Arbor, and small utility creatures may attack only when they are not needed for Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Phyrexian Tower, or commander recursion on the next exchange.

  • Preserve engine creatures over small damage unless the opponent is near lethal. Fauna Shaman, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Deathrite Shaman, Opposition Agent, Orcish Bowmasters, Dauthi Voidwalker, Magus of the Moon, and Cankerbloom should not be exposed to obvious blocks or combat damage when their static, activated, or reactive role is more valuable than two or three points of pressure.

  • Trade aggressively against faster creature decks when the trade buys a full turn or turns on graveyard and recursion value. Accursed Marauder, Saprolings, spent mana creatures, Dryad Arbor, and tokens from Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes are acceptable trade material; avoid trading away Endurance, Fury, Chaos Defiler, or a grown Barrowgoyf unless the exchange prevents lethal or removes the opponents best threat.

  • Block conservatively above 10 life and urgently below 7 life unless visible reach changes the math. Against burn or prowess-style pressure, treat fetch, shock, Thoughtseize, Dismember, Snuff Out, Bitter Triumph, and Phyrexian Tower life payments as part of the combat calculation; a block that preserves three or more life can be better than developing a slow engine.

  • Use sacrifice outlets after blocks only when Veles shows the legal window and the sacrifice changes value. With Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Skullclamp, Phyrexian Tower, or Lazotep Quarry, a creature already assigned to die can become damage, cards, mana, or counters; do not sacrifice a blocker before damage if doing so removes needed damage absorption.

  • Pressure control and combo decks with resilient threats while holding disruptive bodies. Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Broadside Bombardiers, Detective's Phoenix, Dauthi Voidwalker, Orcish Bowmasters, and graveyard-sized creatures can force action; keep Opposition Agent, Endurance, or discard timing available when the opponents visible posture suggests a key search, graveyard, or stack turn.

  • Avoid bad attacks into larger boards unless the attack creates a sacrifice, clamp, planeswalker, or lethal setup. Smuggler's Copter should be crewed by expendable bodies, not by a creature whose tap ability or defensive body is needed. Card text check required for exact combat roles of Headliner Scarlett, Badgermole Cub, Frenzied Baloth, Hexing Squelcher, Ghostfire Slice, Boggart Trawler, and Metamorphosis Fanatic; follow only legal actions Veles exposes for those cards.

Selection And Tutor Rules

  • Tutor for the missing role, not the strongest card in isolation. Demonic Tutor can find any card, so use it to complete the visible plan: mana when colors are broken, Survival of the Fittest or Fauna Shaman when a creature chain is available, Goblin Bombardment or Yawgmoth, Thran Physician when sacrifice material is already present, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes when the game needs a standalone finisher, or the exact answer when a visible permanent is stopping the deck.

  • Use creature tutors as commitment gates when the battlefield and hand support the follow-up. Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Eldritch Evolution, Birthing Pod, Survival of the Fittest, and Fauna Shaman should choose creatures that solve the next turn cycle: Cankerbloom for artifact/enchantment pressure, Endurance for graveyards, Opposition Agent for search-heavy opponents, Orcish Bowmasters for draw-heavy opponents, Magus of the Moon when the opponent is visibly weaker to nonbasic pressure than this deck, or Chaos Defiler when a large swing is needed. Do not spend a tutor on a narrow hate creature unless the relevant opposing resource is visible or strongly implied by public actions.

  • Sequence top-of-library tutors around draw steps and shuffle effects. Cast Worldly Tutor on the opponents end step when possible, but cast it before the draw only when the chosen creature is needed immediately. Avoid using a fetch land after putting a card on top unless the shuffle is intentional. Use Wooded Foothills, Arid Mesa, Windswept Heath, Scalding Tarn, Polluted Delta, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Bloodstained Mire, Verdant Catacombs, and Prismatic Vista before non-random selection when deck thinning or color fixing matters more than preserving a shuffle.

  • Treat Tainted Pact as a high-risk selection spell whose stop decision depends on the visible need. Stop on the first card that materially solves the current problem, such as a missing land, live removal spell, graveyard hate, sacrifice outlet, tutor, or finisher. Do not continue past a good enough answer looking for an ideal card when life total, library size, or the opponents clock makes delay dangerous.

  • Convert disposable creatures into cards only when the exchange does not break mana or sacrifice math. Skullclamp is strongest on Saprolings, Dryad Arbor, spent mana creatures, or creatures that are already dying. Smuggler's Copter filtering should discard redundant lands, dead interaction, or recursive creatures when that advances graveyard plans; do not discard the only answer to a visible permanent.

  • Use land and utility selection to preserve future action density. Boseiju, Who Endures should be held as interaction when a visible artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land matters more than the land drop. Oliphaunt, Boggart Trawler, Abundant Countryside, Commercial District, Underground Mortuary, Lazotep Quarry, Starting Town, Multiversal Passage, Wastewood Verge, and Blazemire Verge need card text checks before treating their selection modes as deterministic; follow only the modes and targets Veles exposes.

Priority And Stack Rules

  • Pass priority by default only when no meaningful instant-speed action, sacrifice conversion, flash creature, graveyard response, or protection spell is legal. This deck has many short-window plays, so check Veles actions before passing through draw steps, combat, end steps, and opposing search or draw spells.

  • Fire discard before committing engines when the opponent can interact on curve. Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, and Grief should clear removal, countermagic, sweepers, combo pieces, or hate before Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, or Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes resolves. Respect the revealed hand only; do not assume the opponent still holds a card after hidden draws.

  • Hold reactive creatures and graveyard tools for the decisive window when possible. Opposition Agent should be used in response to an exposed search, Endurance should answer graveyard commitment or protect against deck/yard pressure, Orcish Bowmasters should punish extra draws or vulnerable small creatures, and Dauthi Voidwalker should be deployed early when replacement pressure matters. Sideboarded Nihil Spellbomb, Grafdigger's Cage, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Veil of Summer, and Force of Vigor should be timed for the spell or engine they actually answer.

  • Use removal on the stack only when waiting loses value. Lightning Bolt, Fatal Push, Dismember, Snuff Out, Bitter Triumph, Abrupt Decay, Flare of Malice, and Fury can stop attackers, mana creatures, combo creatures, or planeswalker pressure, but do not spend them into a low-impact target while a larger visible threat or hate permanent is pending. Abrupt Decay cannot be used like a counterspell; use it only on legal permanents Veles presents.

  • Convert dying creatures after blocks or removal when the legal window appears. With Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Skullclamp, Phyrexian Tower, or Lazotep Quarry, a creature targeted by removal or already assigned lethal damage can become damage, cards, mana, or counters. Do not sacrifice a creature before combat damage if its body is still needed to absorb damage.

  • Treat optional payments and activated abilities as tactical commitments. Activate Slimefoot and Squee recursion only when the graveyard target, Saproling cost, mana, and sorcery-speed restriction shown by Veles support the line. Pay life for Dismember, Snuff Out, Thoughtseize, Bitter Triumph, Phyrexian Tower, or shock lands only when the tempo or answer is worth the life loss.

  • Let harmless spells resolve when interaction must be saved for a higher-impact stack item. Use Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Veil of Summer, Endurance, Opposition Agent, and removal for cards that change the board, protect a combo, break the graveyard plan, or threaten lethal; do not react just because priority is available.

Sideboard Map

  • Sideboard by role, not by card fame. Keep the maindecks proactive Jund creature-engine core intact unless the opponents public plan makes a narrow sideboard card clearly higher impact than a flexible threat, removal spell, or slow engine piece. This is still a Commander-family deck: do not dilute the 100-card engine with reactive cards that answer only one possible draw pattern.

  • Pyroblast is for blue stack battles, blue commanders, blue card-advantage engines, and blue tempo decks where one mana can protect Slimefoot and Squee, Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, or a removal exchange. It is bad against nonblue creature decks, land-heavy prison decks, and graveyard decks whose decisive cards are not blue.

  • Red Elemental Blast duplicates the anti-blue role and improves hands that need cheap protection while advancing mana creatures or discard. It is strongest when the opponent presents blue permission, blue draw, or a blue permanent that must be answered efficiently. It is bad when the only blue card is the commander and the opponent wins through creatures, artifacts, or graveyards.

  • Veil of Summer is for black discard/removal, blue permission, and turns where protecting a key spell is more important than adding another body. Use it as a shield for Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, or a decisive tutor line. It is bad when the opponents interaction is mostly red damage, white exile, artifacts, sweepers without targeting, or board-based combat.

  • Force of Vigor is for artifact/enchantment engines, fast mana rocks, prison permanents, aura/equipment plans, and hate pieces that stop graveyard recursion or creature engines. It is best when the opponent can deploy multiple noncreature permanents before this deck can use sorcery-speed answers. It is bad against creature-heavy decks where pitching a green card creates a card deficit without answering the battlefield.

  • Collector Ouphe is for artifact mana, activated artifact engines, equipment shells, and artifact combo. Protect it when it shuts off more opposing material than friendly material. It weakens Skullclamp, Birthing Pod, and Smuggler's Copter, so avoid it when those cards are the clearest path and the opponent has only incidental artifacts.

  • Nihil Spellbomb is for graveyard recursion, reanimation, delve-style pressure, escape-style value, and graveyard combo. Hold it until the opponent commits a graveyard resource if immediate deployment is not needed to stop a known line. It is bad when graveyards are incidental and the opponent pressures with board, hand, or planeswalkers instead.

  • Grafdigger's Cage is for graveyard casting, library-to-battlefield effects, creature chains, and creature combo plans that rely on zones other than hand. Check friendly conflict before bringing it in, because it can interfere with Slimefoot and Squee, Green Sun's Zenith, Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, or other creature-engine lines depending on exact rules text and legal actions. It is bad when the opponents graveyard plan is only death triggers or when this deck needs commander recursion as the main route.

  • Pithing Needle is for commanders, planeswalkers, equipment, lands, artifacts, and creature abilities whose activated text is visible or strongly implied by public play. Name only legal choices Veles exposes; do not guess hidden cards. It is bad against spell-based decks with few activated abilities or board states where the threatening permanent is already answered by removal.

  • Culling Ritual is for low-cost permanent floods, token boards, artifact/enchantment clusters, and go-wide small-creature decks. Use the mana burst only when Veles exposes a follow-up that justifies waiting; otherwise cast it to stabilize before life total collapses. It is bad when it destroys too much friendly mana development, Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, or hate while leaving the opponents real threats intact.

  • Feed the Swarm is for enchantments or creatures that black/red/green removal does not cleanly answer through the current legal actions. Bring it in when a resolved enchantment can lock combat, graveyards, activated abilities, or commander access. It is bad against fast damage decks where the life loss and sorcery timing are liabilities.

Enchantment / Prison Permanent Plan Side in: Force of Vigor; Feed the Swarm; Pithing Needle Cut: Ghostfire Slice; Badgermole Cub; Detective's Phoenix

Big Mana Artifact / Activated-Permanent Plan Side in: Collector Ouphe; Force of Vigor; Pithing Needle Cut: Fatal Push; Ghostfire Slice; Frenzied Baloth

  • Against blue decks, increase one-mana stack protection with Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Veil of Summer; reduce main-deck emphasis on slow standalone damage or expensive threats when the game will hinge on resolving one key engine.

  • Against artifact decks, increase permanent hate with Force of Vigor, Collector Ouphe, Pithing Needle, and sometimes Culling Ritual; reduce main-deck emphasis on artifact-dependent value if Collector Ouphe is part of the plan.

  • Against graveyard decks, increase graveyard hate with Nihil Spellbomb, Grafdigger's Cage, and sometimes Pithing Needle; reduce main-deck emphasis on graveyard-size attackers if hate will shrink both graveyards or if Grafdigger's Cage conflicts with the commander plan.

  • Against enchantment or prison decks, increase Force of Vigor, Feed the Swarm, Cankerbloom, Boseiju, Who Endures, and tutor access to those effects; reduce main-deck emphasis on creature combat if a single permanent is preventing attacks, sacrifice, or recursion.

  • Against creature swarms, increase Culling Ritual and preserve Fury, Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, Dismember, Snuff Out, Abrupt Decay, Accursed Marauder, and Goblin Bombardment; reduce main-deck emphasis on discard that cannot affect the battlefield after the opponent has deployed multiple threats.

  • Against black disruption, treat Veil of Summer as protection and card-advantage insurance, not only as a countermeasure. Keep hands that can pair discard with a protected engine, but do not hold Veil of Summer forever if using it unlocks a decisive turn.

  • Against commander-centric activated abilities, use Pithing Needle when the name is exposed by commander identity or visible permanent text. Prefer Pithing Needle over removal when the commander can be recast repeatedly and the activated ability is the real threat.

  • Against decks with no blue, no black targeting, few artifacts, and no graveyard reliance, do not overload on narrow sideboard cards. Keep the maindeck pressure, discard, removal, and tutor density because Slimefoot and Squee wins many fair games by converting small creatures into engines and repeated threats.

Matchup Guidance

  • Aggro: stabilize before value engines if life total is under visible pressure, because this deck wins long creature games after the first wave is contained. Keep early mana plus one cheap interaction spell when possible, and use Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, Dismember, Snuff Out, Abrupt Decay, Fury, Accursed Marauder, or Orcish Bowmasters to prevent snowball attacks rather than saving removal for theoretical larger threats. Treat Slimefoot and Squee as a stabilizer when it creates a body and threatens recursion, but do not spend a full turn on commander setup if a legal removal action prevents lethal or a severe tempo loss. Add Culling Ritual when the opponent floods cheap permanents, and use Feed the Swarm only for a must-answer enchantment or creature. Reduce discard such as Duress and Thoughtseize when the opponents relevant cards are already on board and life loss matters.

  • Control: force the opponent to answer layered threats instead of one expensive spell, and lead with discard or cheap pressure before committing Birthing Pod, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, or Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes. Use Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, Grief, and Dauthi Voidwalker to clear the way for a permanent that keeps producing value. Add Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Veil of Summer against blue or black interaction, but do not over-sideboard if the opponents control plan is mostly white sweepers or planeswalkers. Reduce clunky creature-only pressure when the game is about sweepers and counters. Hold Worldly Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, and Eldritch Evolution for threat diversity unless the visible window requires immediate pressure.

  • Combo: disrupt first, clock second, and tutor for the narrow hate or discard that matches the visible combo axis. Prioritize Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, Grief, Opposition Agent, Dauthi Voidwalker, Endurance, Boseiju, Who Endures, Cankerbloom, and Abrupt Decay before slower battlefield engines. Add Grafdigger's Cage, Nihil Spellbomb, Pithing Needle, Collector Ouphe, Force of Vigor, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, or Veil of Summer only when the opponents public plan makes those cards live. Reduce fair combat cards and expensive threats that do not interact before the combo turn. Do not keep a hand with only mana acceleration and no disruption against a known fast combo deck unless the legal mulligan context makes all alternatives worse.

  • Tempo: protect mana development and trade on mana whenever possible, because falling behind while holding expensive engines is the common losing pattern. Sequence one-mana creatures, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, and untapped lands to play around soft pressure, but avoid exposing all acceleration to a single removal line when the hand can make normal land drops. Use Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, Abrupt Decay, Orcish Bowmasters, and Dismember on threats that convert every pass into damage or card selection. Add Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Veil of Summer against blue tempo; add Feed the Swarm only if the threat or lock piece is enchantment-based. Reduce slow graveyard engines when the opponent can win before recursion matters.

  • Midrange: become the better resource deck by turning creatures into repeatable value, sacrifice leverage, or recursive threats. Favor Skullclamp, Goblin Bombardment, Birthing Pod, Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Grist, the Hunger Tide, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and Slimefoot and Squee when both players are trading one-for-one. Use Accursed Marauder, Bitter Triumph, Abrupt Decay, Dismember, and Snuff Out on threats that outscale creature combat or planeswalker pressure. Add Veil of Summer against black removal/discard, Pithing Needle against repeatable activated abilities, and Feed the Swarm against enchantment threats. Reduce narrow burn-to-face plans unless the opponent is already in reach and board control is stable.

  • Big mana: attack setup, mana engines, and payoff timing instead of trying to win a long topdeck war. Use discard to take payoffs when mana is already established and take acceleration or enablers when the opponents hand lacks immediate payoff. Prioritize Magus of the Moon, Opposition Agent, Dauthi Voidwalker, Boseiju, Who Endures, Cankerbloom, Abrupt Decay, and fast commander pressure if legal actions expose them. Add Pithing Needle for visible activated mana or utility permanents, Force of Vigor for artifact/enchantment acceleration, and Collector Ouphe for artifact-heavy mana. Reduce creature removal that only answers small blockers unless it clears a fast lethal clock.

  • Graveyard: decide whether the graveyard is your resource, their resource, or both before firing hate. Use Deathrite Shaman, Dauthi Voidwalker, Endurance, Keen-Eyed Curator, and Boggart Trawler as maindeck pressure points when legal actions expose them. Add Nihil Spellbomb, Grafdigger's Cage, and sometimes Pithing Needle when the opponent relies on graveyard zones, activated recursion, or graveyard casting. Reduce Pyrogoyf, Barrowgoyf, Detective's Phoenix, and commander recursion if your own hate visibly weakens those lines. Prefer timed exile effects over early symbolic hate when the opponent must commit cards first.

  • Artifact/enchantment: answer the permanent that changes the rules of the game before developing optional value. Use Cankerbloom, Boseiju, Who Endures, Abrupt Decay, Force of Vigor, Feed the Swarm, Collector Ouphe, and Pithing Needle according to the visible permanent type and activated abilities. Add Force of Vigor when multiple targets or instant speed matter, Collector Ouphe when artifact activations are central, Pithing Needle when one visible activated ability is the issue, and Culling Ritual when low-cost permanents cluster. Reduce Skullclamp, Birthing Pod, and Smuggler's Copter as engine priorities when Collector Ouphe is shutting off your own artifact plan.

  • Go-wide: preserve sweep-like effects and sacrifice outlets until they change combat math or reset a developed board. Fury, Orcish Bowmasters, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Grist, the Hunger Tide, Accursed Marauder, and Culling Ritual are more important than single large attackers. Add Culling Ritual, Feed the Swarm, and Force of Vigor when tokens or cheap permanents are backed by enchantments/artifacts. Reduce discard and one-for-one removal after the opponent has already deployed several bodies. Do not attack with a needed blocker under a short clock unless the attack creates lethal pressure or a visible sacrifice line.

  • Single-threat: answer, blank, or race the one card that matters, and avoid spending premium interaction on support pieces unless they protect the threat. Bitter Triumph, Dismember, Snuff Out, Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, Abrupt Decay, Accursed Marauder, Grist, the Hunger Tide, and Pithing Needle are the main tools depending on threat type and legal actions. Add Pithing Needle for commanders or permanents with visible activated abilities, Feed the Swarm for enchantment or creature threats, and Veil of Summer when black or blue interaction protects the threat. Reduce go-wide attrition if the opponent can ignore small bodies.

  • Burn: protect life total as a resource, and stop paying life unless the play prevents more damage than it costs or wins quickly. Fetch shock lands carefully, avoid unnecessary Thoughtseize, Bitter Triumph, Dismember, Snuff Out, or untapped shock-land costs, and prioritize blockers plus life-preserving removal. Deathrite Shaman, Slimefoot and Squee, cheap creatures, and token generation matter because each body can trade, crew, sacrifice, or buy time. Add Feed the Swarm only for must-answer enchantments or creatures, and avoid narrow cards that do not affect damage. Reduce slow engines that require life payment or multiple turns before stabilizing.

  • Removal-heavy: overload one-for-one answers with recursion, death value, and must-answer engines. Lead with discard when it protects Survival of the Fittest, Fauna Shaman, Birthing Pod, Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, or Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes. Treat Slimefoot and Squee as a recurring threat only when the graveyard, Saproling requirement, mana, and legal activation timing are actually available. Add Veil of Summer against black or blue targeting, Nihil Spellbomb only if the opponent also uses graveyard recursion, and Pithing Needle for planeswalkers or commander engines. Reduce fragile single threats without protection when a value permanent or tutor chain is available.

Specific Matchup Notes

  • General/archetype-only: revealed cards, legal actions, and public board state override these assumptions. Treat unknown opponents by first identifying whether the visible pressure is creature damage, stack interaction, graveyard reliance, artifact/enchantment engines, commander-centric activation, or fast combo setup. Sideboard lightly until the opponent has shown a real axis; this decks default plan is still mana acceleration, discard, creature engines, sacrifice value, and commander recursion.

  • Blue control or tempo: protect the high-impact engine turn before committing Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, or Slimefoot and Squee. Add Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Veil of Summer. Priority targets are counterspell windows, card-advantage permanents, and commanders that convert open mana into repeated interaction. Reduce sorcery-speed engine lines into open mana unless discard or protection has cleared the way.

  • Graveyard combo or recursion: decide whether hate should stop a present graveyard action or preserve your own recursive plan. Add Nihil Spellbomb, Grafdigger's Cage, and Pithing Needle when visible activated recursion or graveyard casting matters. Priority targets are graveyard payoff spells, sacrifice-recursion loops, and commanders that turn the graveyard into card advantage. Reduce Pyrogoyf, Barrowgoyf, Detective's Phoenix, and Slimefoot and Squee recursion when your own hate visibly weakens them.

  • Artifact or enchantment engine: answer the permanent that changes legal play patterns before developing optional value. Add Force of Vigor, Collector Ouphe, Culling Ritual, Pithing Needle, and Feed the Swarm. Priority targets are mana artifacts, lock pieces, enchantments that stop combat or graveyard use, and activated permanents that generate repeated cards or mana. Reduce Skullclamp, Birthing Pod, and Smuggler's Copter as engine priorities when Collector Ouphe is active.

  • Creature swarm or low-curve aggro: preserve life total and avoid paying life unless the play prevents more damage than it costs. Add Culling Ritual and Feed the Swarm; add Force of Vigor only when artifacts or enchantments are driving the board. Priority targets are anthem effects, evasive threats, sacrifice payoff creatures, and bodies that make blocking impossible. Reduce slow tutor chains that do not affect the next combat.

  • Black midrange or removal-heavy decks: overload removal with recursive threats, sacrifice value, and protected engines. Add Veil of Summer, Pithing Needle, and sometimes Nihil Spellbomb if the opponent also uses graveyard recursion. Priority targets are planeswalkers, sacrifice outlets, commander engines, and graveyard hate that shuts off Slimefoot and Squee. Reduce fragile single-threat lines when Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Fauna Shaman, or Survival of the Fittest can create repeated value.

  • Big mana or spell combo: attack setup and payoff timing instead of trying to win a long resource war. Add Collector Ouphe, Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Veil of Summer according to visible colors and permanent types. Priority targets are mana engines, tutors, commander activations, and payoff spells. Reduce creature removal that only answers small blockers.

  • Commander-centric single-threat decks: identify whether the commander is best answered by removal, edict pressure, racing, or activated-ability denial. Add Pithing Needle when the commanders activated ability is the central threat, and add Veil of Summer when black or blue protection determines whether the answer resolves. Priority targets are repeated activations, protection engines, and support permanents that make the commander resilient. Reduce attrition cards that create material but do not change the commanders clock.

  • Prison or enchantment lock decks: keep access to Cankerbloom, Boseiju, Who Endures, Abrupt Decay, Force of Vigor, and Feed the Swarm, then use tutors to find the answer that matches the permanent type. Add Pithing Needle if a visible activated permanent is the lock engine. Priority targets are permanents that stop attacking, sacrificing, searching, graveyard recursion, or commander access. Reduce creature-combat emphasis when the board text prevents combat from mattering.

  • Fair creature mirrors: stay the engine deck, not the narrow-answer deck. Preserve Goblin Bombardment, Skullclamp, Birthing Pod, Survival of the Fittest, Grist, the Hunger Tide, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and Slimefoot and Squee unless a specific opposing permanent demands a sideboard answer. Add Culling Ritual only when the opponents curve and board actually make it asymmetrical enough. Priority targets are cards that snowball combat or invalidate blocking. Reduce narrow stack or graveyard hate when it has no visible text to answer.

Risk Summary

  • Mana risk: the deck is three colors with many fetch, shock, utility, and conditional lands, so keep hands only when the visible land sequence casts early green acceleration or black disruption on time. Magus of the Moon can punish opponents but can also strand your own black and green requirements if sequenced before basics, mana creatures, or fetch choices support the follow-up.

  • Life-total risk: Thoughtseize, Bitter Triumph, Dismember, Snuff Out, fetch lands, and shock lands can turn a stabilizing hand into a burn-range hand. Pay life only when the chosen legal action prevents more damage, breaks a combo setup, protects a decisive engine, or creates lethal pressure.

  • Graveyard risk: Slimefoot and Squee, Deathrite Shaman, Endurance, Dauthi Voidwalker, Boggart Trawler, Keen-Eyed Curator, Pyrogoyf, Barrowgoyf, and Detective's Phoenix can pull in different directions. Do not fire graveyard hate reflexively when your own visible line needs graveyard size, recursion access, or a specific card to remain available.

  • Over-sideboarding risk: broad hate cards can weaken the creature-engine core if they do not answer the opponents revealed plan. Collector Ouphe can interfere with Skullclamp, Birthing Pod, and Smuggler's Copter; Grafdigger's Cage can constrain graveyard and library lines; Culling Ritual can remove your own cheap permanents.

  • Sweeper/removal risk: committing mana creatures, sacrifice fodder, and one engine into a known sweeper can lose both tempo and material. When the opponent represents mass removal, keep one rebuild source, tutor, command-zone line, or recursive threat uncommitted unless current pressure forces extension.

  • Closer risk: the deck can generate value without ending the game, especially if Goblin Bombardment, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Broadside Bombardiers, Fury, Chaos Defiler, or commander recursion is delayed. Convert advantage into attacks, sacrifice damage, or planeswalker pressure before the opponent topdecks a reset.

  • Interaction risk: discard and removal are strongest before the opponents key card resolves, but weak when held past the decisive window. Use Duress, Inquisition of Kozilek, Thoughtseize, Fatal Push, Abrupt Decay, Lightning Bolt, Bitter Triumph, Dismember, Snuff Out, Flare of Malice, and Fury according to visible threat type and timing.

  • Sequencing risk: tutor, sacrifice, and Pod-style lines are easy to mis-sequence because costs, targets, and board material all matter. Card text check required for Badgermole Cub, Headliner Scarlett, Hexing Squelcher, Starting Town, Multiversal Passage, and Ghostfire Slice; treat their tactical use as conditional on runtime card text and legal action output.

Test Feedback Checklist

  • Deciding factor: identify the turn or decision where the game shifted, and classify it as mana development, hand disruption, creature combat, engine commitment, removal timing, sideboard card, or closing failure.

  • Mulligans: record whether the opening hand had green acceleration, black disruption, castable interaction, and a two-turn mana plan for Slimefoot and Squee, Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, or Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes.

  • Mana: check whether fetch, shock, basic, and utility-land choices supported the next two legal actions, especially when Magus of the Moon, Phyrexian Tower, Dryad Arbor, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, or double-spell turns were involved.

  • Life total: note every paid-life decision from Thoughtseize, Bitter Triumph, Dismember, Snuff Out, fetch lands, or shock lands, and ask whether that payment prevented more damage or only accelerated the opponent's clock.

  • Velocity: record whether Skullclamp, Smuggler's Copter, Fauna Shaman, Survival of the Fittest, Worldly Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Eldritch Evolution, Birthing Pod, or Tainted Pact converted into a material advantage before the opponent stabilized.

  • Engine commitment: flag each turn where Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Goblin Bombardment, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Grist, the Hunger Tide, or Slimefoot and Squee was committed into open interaction, and record whether waiting would have improved the line.

  • Removal: verify whether Fatal Push, Abrupt Decay, Lightning Bolt, Bitter Triumph, Dismember, Snuff Out, Flare of Malice, Fury, and Accursed Marauder hit threats that mattered to the visible board or were spent on low-impact bodies.

  • Graveyard use: track whether Deathrite Shaman, Endurance, Dauthi Voidwalker, Keen-Eyed Curator, Boggart Trawler, Pyrogoyf, Barrowgoyf, Detective's Phoenix, and Slimefoot and Squee fought over the same resource or supported the same plan.

  • Sideboard: record which of Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Force of Vigor, Collector Ouphe, Nihil Spellbomb, Grafdigger's Cage, Pithing Needle, Culling Ritual, Feed the Swarm, and Veil of Summer appeared, whether each had a legal target or protective window, and whether it constrained the deck's own engines.

  • Closing: ask whether advantage became lethal pressure through Broadside Bombardiers, Goblin Bombardment, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Chaos Defiler, Fury, Pyrogoyf, Barrowgoyf, commander recursion, or attacks before the opponent rebuilt.

  • Role: label the played role as disruptor, engine midrange, sacrifice-control, graveyard pressure, or racing deck, and mark any turn where the pilot changed roles without a visible reason.

  • Mistakes: capture legal-action mistakes, missed land sequencing, premature discard, wrong removal target, unsafe tutor timing, unnecessary life payment, and attacks that left no blocker under a short clock.

  • Stranded cards: list cards that stayed uncastable or unused for two or more turns, with the reason: color shortage, life cost, missing sacrifice material, graveyard conflict, wrong matchup, or card text check required.

  • Overperformers and underperformers: identify the cards that most changed the game state and the cards that looked powerful but did not affect the decisive turn.

First Tuning Questions

  • Mana base: if losses involved color failure or awkward tapped lands, should the mana configuration increase reliable untapped green and black access for Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Birds of Paradise, Deathrite Shaman, Thoughtseize, Duress, and Inquisition of Kozilek?

  • Life pressure: if aggressive decks punished paid-life sequencing, should the plan reduce reliance on life-cost interaction in those matchups or prioritize Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt, Abrupt Decay, Accursed Marauder, and blockers earlier?

  • Acceleration density: if engine cards arrived too late, should the list preserve or increase one-mana acceleration roles around Arbor Elf, Elves of Deep Shadow, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Ignoble Hierarch, Birds of Paradise, Delighted Halfling, Wild Growth, and Utopia Sprawl?

  • Engine balance: if Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Fauna Shaman, and Yawgmoth, Thran Physician were stranded without creatures, should creature density or sacrifice fodder density be adjusted before adding more noncreature interaction?

  • Graveyard conflict: if Endurance, Dauthi Voidwalker, Keen-Eyed Curator, Nihil Spellbomb, or Grafdigger's Cage weakened Slimefoot and Squee, Detective's Phoenix, Pyrogoyf, or Barrowgoyf, should graveyard hate be narrower or matchup-locked?

  • Aggro plan: if creature decks won before engines mattered, should post-board emphasis increase Culling Ritual, Feed the Swarm, Fury, Accursed Marauder, and cheap removal rather than slow tutor chains?

  • Control plan: if blue decks stopped the first engine, should post-board emphasis increase protected commitment turns with Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Veil of Summer instead of exposing Survival of the Fittest or Birthing Pod early?

  • Closer package: if games stalled after gaining material, should the deck lean harder on Goblin Bombardment, Broadside Bombardiers, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, Chaos Defiler, and commander recursion as closing tools?

  • Sideboard slots: if Collector Ouphe, Grafdigger's Cage, or Culling Ritual harmed the deck as much as the opponent, should those slots remain matchup-specific rather than broad default inclusions?

  • Role conflicts: if discard, graveyard pressure, sacrifice engines, and creature combat pulled in different directions, which package actually won games, and which package merely looked synergistic without deciding matches?

  • Uncertain cards: if Badgermole Cub, Headliner Scarlett, Hexing Squelcher, Starting Town, Multiversal Passage, or Ghostfire Slice affected decisions, perform a card text check before changing tactical policy around them.

Veles Tactical Policy

Policy: Keep Functional Acceleration Hands

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: mulligan; pregame
  • Cards: Arbor Elf; Birds of Paradise; Deathrite Shaman; Delighted Halfling; Elves of Deep Shadow; Elvish Mystic; Fyndhorn Elves; Ignoble Hierarch; Llanowar Elves; Wild Growth; Utopia Sprawl
  • Phase windows: opening hand; mulligan decisions
  • Runtime cues: prompt:mulligan; visible opening hand; command-zone access to Slimefoot and Squee
  • Use when: the hand has two mana sources or one land plus castable acceleration, at least one early play, and a plausible path to black-green-red by turn three or four.
  • Avoid when: the hand relies on a single fragile source, lacks green or black action, or cannot cast interaction before a fast opponent develops.
  • Instructions: prefer hands that accelerate into Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, or Slimefoot and Squee while still interacting.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Reject Mana-Decorated Nonfunctional Hands

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: mulligan; mana
  • Cards: none
  • Phase windows: opening hand; mulligan decisions
  • Runtime cues: prompt:mulligan; visible opening hand
  • Use when: the hand has lands but no castable one- or two-mana spell, no acceleration, and no disruption that affects the opponent before turn three.
  • Avoid when: the hand has a clear two-turn plan with discard, removal, acceleration, or a tutor to a missing engine piece.
  • Instructions: treat singleton power cards as insufficient if the hand cannot cast them on time; do not keep because a late card is strong in abstract.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: First Green Source Setup

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: mana
  • Cards: Forest; Snow-Covered Forest; Bayou; Taiga; Overgrown Tomb; Stomping Ground; Command Tower; Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth; Dryad Arbor; Wooded Foothills; Windswept Heath; Verdant Catacombs; Misty Rainforest; Prismatic Vista
  • Phase windows: early main phases; fetch decisions; land play decisions
  • Runtime cues: action:play land; action:search library; visible hand includes one-mana green acceleration
  • Use when: a legal land or fetch decision can make Arbor Elf, Birds of Paradise, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Wild Growth, or Utopia Sprawl castable this turn.
  • Avoid when: fetching that source prevents required black interaction or red removal against a visible immediate threat.
  • Instructions: prioritize untapped green early because this deck converts green mana into both engines and fixing; preserve basics when Magus of the Moon is part of the visible plan.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Preserve Jund Access Before Utility Lands

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: mana
  • Cards: Phyrexian Tower; Boseiju, Who Endures; Lazotep Quarry; Grove of the Burnwillows; Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth
  • Phase windows: land play decisions; precombat main; postcombat main
  • Runtime cues: action:play land; visible hand contains multicolor spells or commander recast pressure
  • Use when: choosing between utility land development and colored access for Slimefoot and Squee, removal, discard, or engine spells.
  • Avoid when: the utility land is the only legal line that answers a visible permanent or creates immediate lethal/survival impact.
  • Instructions: do not strand black discard/removal or red commander costs to gain marginal utility; use Phyrexian Tower aggressively only when sacrifice mana advances a specific legal spell.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Engine Commitment Gate

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: priority; selection; mana
  • Cards: Survival of the Fittest; Birthing Pod; Fauna Shaman; Yawgmoth, Thran Physician; Goblin Bombardment; Grist, the Hunger Tide
  • Phase windows: main phases; priority with engine spell or activation legal
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Survival of the Fittest; action:cast Birthing Pod; action:activate Fauna Shaman; action:cast Yawgmoth, Thran Physician; action:cast Goblin Bombardment
  • Use when: committing an engine would consume most mana, expose the engine to open interaction, or require discarding/sacrificing a meaningful creature.
  • Avoid when: the legal action is the only available play and passing would lose to a visible board state.
  • Instructions: commit when the engine can activate immediately, is protected by discard or Veil of Summer, or waiting gives the opponent a better window; otherwise sequence discard/removal first.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Deterministic Green Sun Dryad Arbor Setup

  • Priority: Low
  • Decision families: selection; mana
  • Cards: Green Sun's Zenith; Dryad Arbor
  • Phase windows: early main phase
  • Runtime cues: action:target Dryad Arbor Green Sun's Zenith
  • Use when: Green Sun's Zenith for X=0 is already legally selected and the legal target text names Dryad Arbor.
  • Avoid when: the target list includes other selected nonzero creatures or the X value is not visible as zero.
  • Instructions: choose Dryad Arbor only for the exact X=0 acceleration line already presented by the rules engine.
  • Pilot skill floor: no-api
  • No-API allowed: yes
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Tutor Commitment Gate

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: selection; priority
  • Cards: Demonic Tutor; Worldly Tutor; Green Sun's Zenith; Eldritch Evolution; Tainted Pact; Survival of the Fittest; Fauna Shaman; Birthing Pod
  • Phase windows: main phases; end step for instant-speed selection when legal
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Demonic Tutor; action:cast Worldly Tutor; action:cast Green Sun's Zenith; action:cast Eldritch Evolution; action:cast Tainted Pact; action:activate Survival of the Fittest
  • Use when: a tutor or selection spell asks for a card, sacrifice, discard, exile continuation, or creature chain target.
  • Avoid when: the action text names a deterministic target covered by a no-API policy.
  • Instructions: select based on the current role: acceleration or engine when stable, removal when dying, graveyard hate when graveyard is decisive, and a closer when ahead but not converting.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Commander Recursion Gate

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: priority; selection; mana
  • Cards: Slimefoot and Squee; Phyrexian Tower; Goblin Bombardment; Yawgmoth, Thran Physician
  • Phase windows: main phases; sorcery-speed activation windows
  • Runtime cues: action:activate Slimefoot and Squee; prompt:target creature card in graveyard; visible graveyard
  • Use when: Slimefoot and Squee activation is legal and requires sacrificing material or selecting a graveyard creature.
  • Avoid when: graveyard hate, exile replacement, or a visible response window would make the activation lose the key target without immediate benefit.
  • Instructions: use the commander recursion to rebuild after trades, convert Saproling material into a high-impact creature, or loop pressure; do not spend the only sacrifice body for a low-impact return.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Discard Before Engine Against Interaction

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: interaction; priority
  • Cards: Thoughtseize; Duress; Inquisition of Kozilek; Grief
  • Phase windows: early main phase; pre-engine turns
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Thoughtseize; action:cast Duress; action:cast Inquisition of Kozilek; action:cast Grief
  • Use when: the opponent has untapped mana, unknown hand, and the pilot can follow with Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Slimefoot and Squee, or Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes soon.
  • Avoid when: life payment is lethal-risk, the opponent has no cards, or the visible board demands immediate removal.
  • Instructions: take the card that stops the next planned engine or removes the most immediate visible threat; respect rules-engine legal discard candidates.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Removal Triage

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: interaction; priority
  • Cards: Fatal Push; Abrupt Decay; Lightning Bolt; Bitter Triumph; Dismember; Snuff Out; Flare of Malice; Fury; Accursed Marauder
  • Phase windows: any legal removal window; combat trick windows; opponent main phase
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Fatal Push; action:cast Abrupt Decay; action:cast Lightning Bolt; action:cast Bitter Triumph; action:cast Dismember; action:cast Snuff Out; action:cast Flare of Malice; action:cast Fury
  • Use when: a visible permanent threatens lethal, disables the deck's engine, prevents combat stabilization, or will gain decisive advantage before the next turn.
  • Avoid when: the target is low impact, combat can answer it cleanly, or spending life would expose the pilot to lethal damage.
  • Instructions: use cheapest clean answers first when tempo matters; save flexible answers for permanents cheap removal cannot touch.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Stack Protection And Blue Interaction

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: interaction; priority
  • Cards: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Veil of Summer
  • Phase windows: stack interaction windows; engine commitment turns; discard protection windows
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Pyroblast; action:cast Red Elemental Blast; action:cast Veil of Summer
  • Use when: a legal action can protect a decisive engine, stop a blue spell, counter a black disruption spell through Veil of Summer text, or force through a game-winning play.
  • Avoid when: the spell does not affect the stack or permanent according to legal action text.
  • Instructions: hold these for high-impact exchanges rather than routine cantrips unless the visible stack decides the game.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Sacrifice Outlet Conversion

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: priority; combat; interaction
  • Cards: Goblin Bombardment; Yawgmoth, Thran Physician; Phyrexian Tower; Broadside Bombardiers; Skullclamp
  • Phase windows: combat damage setup; removal response windows; end step; main phase
  • Runtime cues: action:activate Goblin Bombardment; action:activate Yawgmoth, Thran Physician; action:activate Phyrexian Tower; action:equip Skullclamp
  • Use when: a creature is about to die, can be converted into damage/cards/mana, or sacrifice unlocks a selected spell this turn.
  • Avoid when: the creature is needed to block lethal damage, crew Smuggler's Copter, pay convoke-like costs shown by the engine, or enable Slimefoot and Squee.
  • Instructions: convert expendable bodies into resources before exile or bounce effects resolve; prioritize concrete lethal, survival, or engine activation over generic sacrifice value.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Combat Role Gate

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: combat
  • Cards: Pyrogoyf; Barrowgoyf; Broadside Bombardiers; Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes; Detective's Phoenix; Frenzied Baloth; Chaos Defiler; Slimefoot and Squee
  • Phase windows: declare attackers; declare blockers; combat trick windows
  • Runtime cues: prompt:declare attackers; prompt:declare blockers; visible attackers; visible blockers
  • Use when: combat decisions require choosing attacks, blocks, crew decisions, sacrifice timing, or planeswalker pressure.
  • Avoid when: exactly one legal no-attack or no-block action is forced by the rules engine.
  • Instructions: attack when pressure advances lethal or planeswalker control without losing the only stabilizer; block when preserving life or protecting engines matters more than incremental damage.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Moon Lock Commitment

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: mana; priority; interaction
  • Cards: Magus of the Moon; Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth; Forest; Snow-Covered Forest; Swamp; Mountain
  • Phase windows: main phase before casting Magus of the Moon; land sequencing before lock
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Magus of the Moon; visible lands; visible hand color requirements
  • Use when: Magus of the Moon is legal and may constrain opponent mana or the pilot's own future spell access.
  • Avoid when: casting it cuts off black-green-red access needed for hand, commander, or removal before the opponent is meaningfully constrained.
  • Instructions: cast after securing basics or mana creatures that let the deck function; treat it as a prison commitment, not a routine creature.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Card Text Uncertainty Gate

  • Priority: Low
  • Decision families: priority; selection; interaction
  • Cards: Badgermole Cub; Headliner Scarlett; Hexing Squelcher; Starting Town; Multiversal Passage; Ghostfire Slice; Frenzied Baloth
  • Phase windows: any legal cast, activation, trigger, or target prompt for listed cards
  • Runtime cues: action text includes Badgermole Cub; action text includes Headliner Scarlett; action text includes Hexing Squelcher; action text includes Starting Town; action text includes Multiversal Passage; action text includes Ghostfire Slice
  • Use when: Veles presents a legal action involving a listed card and tactical impact depends on exact Oracle or digital card text.
  • Avoid when: rules-engine text fully specifies the legal target, cost, and visible result in the action label.
  • Instructions: Card text check required; use only visible rules-engine outputs and do not infer hidden modes, damage amounts, protection, or triggered outcomes.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no

Policy: Sideboard Plan Selection

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: sideboard
  • Cards: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Force of Vigor; Collector Ouphe; Nihil Spellbomb; Grafdigger's Cage; Pithing Needle; Culling Ritual; Feed the Swarm; Veil of Summer
  • Phase windows: sideboarding after game one; sideboarding after game two
  • Runtime cues: prompt:sideboard; matchup label; observed opponent cards; sideboard candidate plan; generated swap plan
  • Use when: choosing a legal sideboard plan or generated swap plan from Veles candidates.
  • Avoid when: a proposed plan violates registered 100 plus 10 inventory, cuts too many mana sources, removes the commander-engine core, or adds hate that disables the pilot more than the opponent.
  • Instructions: choose role cards from the exact registered sideboard only. Add blasts and Veil against blue or black stack fights, graveyard hate against graveyard engines, Force of Vigor or Collector Ouphe against artifacts/enchantments, Culling Ritual against low-cost permanent floods, Feed the Swarm against enchantments or hard-to-answer creatures, and Pithing Needle for visible activated-card dependence.

Policy: Sideboard Lock Submission

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: sideboard; validation
  • Cards: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Force of Vigor; Collector Ouphe; Nihil Spellbomb; Grafdigger's Cage; Pithing Needle; Culling Ritual; Feed the Swarm; Veil of Summer
  • Phase windows: sideboard lock step; post-game sideboarding; match game transition
  • Runtime cues: prompt:submit sideboard; action:lock sideboard plan; validation:registered inventory; validation:100 main plus 10 sideboard
  • Use when: Veles asks to confirm the selected sideboard configuration for the next game.
  • Avoid when: any inbound card is absent from the registered sideboard, any outbound card is absent from the registered main deck, counts are not balanced, or the swap removes essential mana and engine density without a matchup-specific reason.
  • Instructions: submit only a validated plan that preserves the registered inventory and keeps the deck as proactive Jund creature-engine Slimefoot and Squee. If validation fails, prefer the closest legal conservative plan over an ambitious illegal one.
  • Pilot skill floor: light-model
  • No-API allowed: no

Policy: Narrow Hate Deployment

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: interaction; selection; sideboard
  • Cards: Force of Vigor; Collector Ouphe; Nihil Spellbomb; Grafdigger's Cage; Pithing Needle; Culling Ritual; Feed the Swarm
  • Phase windows: early turns; opponent setup turns; graveyard interaction windows; artifact/enchantment development windows; commander activation windows
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Force of Vigor; action:cast Collector Ouphe; action:activate Nihil Spellbomb; action:cast Grafdigger's Cage; action:cast Pithing Needle; action:cast Culling Ritual; action:cast Feed the Swarm
  • Use when: the opponent has shown the relevant zone, permanent type, activated ability, or low-cost board pattern and the hate action changes the next turn cycle.
  • Avoid when: the hate card is only theoretically live, the opponents public plan is attacking from a different axis, or the hate would shut off Skullclamp, Birthing Pod, Smuggler's Copter, Slimefoot and Squee, Green Sun's Zenith, Eldritch Evolution, Survival of the Fittest, or Fauna Shaman more than it hurts the opponent.
  • Instructions: deploy narrow hate for a visible purpose, not for symbolic coverage. Hold timed graveyard exile until the opponent commits a resource unless immediate deployment stops a known line. Use Pithing Needle only on a legal exposed name or commander-identity name.

Policy: Anti-Blue And Anti-Black Protection Timing

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: interaction; priority; sideboard
  • Cards: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Veil of Summer
  • Phase windows: key spell turns; counterspell windows; discard windows; removal windows; end-step setup windows
  • Runtime cues: action:cast Pyroblast; action:cast Red Elemental Blast; action:cast Veil of Summer; prompt:respond to spell; prompt:protect permanent
  • Use when: a one-mana answer protects Slimefoot and Squee, Survival of the Fittest, Birthing Pod, Fauna Shaman, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes, or a decisive tutor/removal exchange.
  • Avoid when: the opponents interaction is mostly red damage, white exile, artifact abilities, sweepers without targeting, or nonblue and nonblack board pressure.
  • Instructions: value these cards as tempo-positive protection and disruption, but do not hold them past a decisive window. In blue matchups, counter card advantage or permission that stops the engine. In black matchups, use Veil of Summer to turn discard or removal into a protected resource swing.
