Strategy Specifications

Deck Name And Archetype

  • Strategy identity: Kadena Face Down is a Sultai Commander strategy built around Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, face-down permanents, morph/manifest timing, and hidden-identity pressure. The deck is not a stock format staple shell; treat it as a rogue hybrid of creature-engine value, tricky stack/combat interaction, and Commander-specific face-down edge cases.

  • Format validation: Active format is Commander, and the submitted configuration passes the stated Veles validation contract: 100 main-deck cards, singleton main deck outside basic-land allowance, commander declared as Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, and a 10-card Veles policy sideboard. Do not apply 60-card constructed size checks to this strategy.

  • Registered zones: Main deck contains Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer plus 99 registered main-deck cards, including 36 lands and a compact acceleration suite with Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Fellwar Stone, Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, Bloom Tender, Deathrite Shaman, and Sakura-Tribe Elder. Sideboard contains exactly one each of Veil of Summer, Force of Vigor, Collector Ouphe, Endurance, Grafdigger's Cage, Thoughtseize, Negate, Krosan Grip, Heroic Intervention, and Opposition Agent.

  • Archetype tags: The registered tags are edge-case, draft-only, morph, manifest, face-down permanents, hidden identity, and turn-face-up timing. The decision agent should expect unusual rules surfaces: face-down object identity, controller and owner information, replay redaction, optional turn-face-up windows, and hidden-information discipline matter more than in ordinary creature decks.

  • Core commander plan: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer is the decks command-zone engine and should be evaluated as both mana relief and card-flow infrastructure for face-down creature sequencing. Commander-tax decisions matter because repeated recasts can be correct when the hand contains multiple face-down threats, but tapping out for a tax-increased recast can be wrong when visible pressure or open opposing interaction makes a protected setup turn unavailable.

  • Strategic texture: The main deck combines face-down creatures such as Den Protector, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Brine Elemental, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Sagu Mauler, Icefeather Aven, Hooded Hydra, Thousand Winds, Mischievous Quanar, Silumgar Assassin, Aphetto Exterminator, Bane of the Living, and Deathmist Raptor with enchantment/artifact engines such as Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Scroll of Fate, Dream Chisel, Obscuring Aether, Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Rhystic Study, and Mystic Remora.

  • Legality and support concerns: The list is accepted by the supplied format-aware validator, but runtime support must still verify face-down owner information, face-down replay redaction, and engine support for The Cyber-Controller and Ugin's Mastery. When exact card-reference metadata is missing, the pilot must avoid inventing card text, target restrictions, timing permissions, or legality certainty and should route choices through visible rules-engine legal actions.

  • Mana identity: The deck is Sultai, using blue, black, and green sources from Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Zagoth Triome, shocklands, original duals, fetchlands, slow/check/pathway lands, channel lands, and one each of Island, Swamp, and Forest. Mana decisions must respect actual available colors and registered targets; do not assume off-list colors, absent basic types, or absent utility lands.

  • Opponent information status: No opponent decklists, matchup identities, hidden zones, or metagame-specific cards are supplied for this batch. Any opponent card names used later must either be runtime-visible public information, marked as opponent: in policy Cards:, or kept in prose outside policy card fields.

Thesis

  • Core thesis: Kadena Face Down assembles a protected Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer engine, cost-reduced face-down creatures, and hidden-information turn-face-up pressure to convert ordinary creature deployment into card advantage, tempo traps, and eventual board dominance.

  • Primary path: Prioritize early mana, then land Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer with either protection or a follow-up face-down creature available, because the deck is strongest when each face-down deployment threatens multiple identities while replacing itself or reducing future costs.

  • Win pattern: The deck wins by snowballing face-down bodies into a wide board, flipping high-impact threats at tactical windows, and using cards such as Brine Elemental, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Thousand Winds, Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Bane of the Living, and The Cyber-Controller as pressure, reset, or lock-adjacent payoffs when legal actions and reference metadata support the line.

  • What not to do: Do not play this as generic Sultai ramp, pure permission control, or a tutor-for-one-combo deck; Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, and Green Sun's Zenith should usually find missing engine, protection, answer, or pressure pieces rather than chase unsupported deterministic kills.

  • Runtime priority: Respect rules-engine legal actions for face-down identity, turn-face-up permissions, owner information, and replay redaction; when metadata for The Cyber-Controller or Ugin's Mastery is incomplete, use only visible legal action text and avoid assuming exact triggers, timing, or outcomes.

Role Package

  • Threats: Den Protector, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Brine Elemental, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Sagu Mauler, Icefeather Aven, Hooded Hydra, Thousand Winds, Mischievous Quanar, Silumgar Assassin, Aphetto Exterminator, Bane of the Living, Deathmist Raptor, Ixidron, The Cyber-Controller, Whisperwood Elemental, and Ugin's Mastery are the face-down or face-down-adjacent pressure package; sequence them to preserve uncertainty, not merely to spend mana.

  • Payoffs: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Scroll of Fate, Dream Chisel, Obscuring Aether, Ugin, the Ineffable, Yedora, Grave Gardener, and Ugin's Mastery reward face-down deployment or cost compression; protect these before exposing multiple morphs into sweepers.

  • Engines: Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Grim Haruspex, Seedborn Muse, Primordial Mist, and Whisperwood Elemental generate cards, mana-window pressure, or replacement material; choose engine commitment based on visible opponent pressure and whether Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Counterspell, or Swan Song can cover the turn.

  • Velocity: Fact or Fiction, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, and Green Sun's Zenith find either a missing engine, a matchup answer, or a stabilizing creature; prefer tutor targets that solve the current board state over speculative hidden-identity value.

  • Interaction: Counterspell, Swan Song, Cyclonic Rift, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, Reality Shift, Putrefy, and Toxic Deluge are the main answer suite, while face-down interaction from Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Silumgar Assassin, Aphetto Exterminator, Bane of the Living, and Thousand Winds should be preserved when its hidden identity changes opponent lines.

  • Protection: Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Heroic Intervention, and Veil of Summer protect Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, engines, or a board of face-down creatures; do not spend them on low-impact exchanges when commander recast tax or engine loss will collapse the hand.

  • Recursion and resilience: Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, Yedora, Grave Gardener, Takenuma, Abandoned Mire, Hooded Hydra, Grim Haruspex, Whisperwood Elemental, and Primordial Mist help recover from removal or sweepers; use them to rebuild hidden boards instead of overcommitting all face-down material before a likely reset.

  • Mana: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Fellwar Stone, Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, Bloom Tender, Deathrite Shaman, and Sakura-Tribe Elder support early commander turns and double-spell morph turns; land sequencing should keep blue, black, and green available for interaction and turn-face-up costs shown by legal actions.

  • Sideboard modules: Force of Vigor, Collector Ouphe, Grafdigger's Cage, Krosan Grip, Endurance, Thoughtseize, Negate, Opposition Agent, Heroic Intervention, and sideboard Veil of Summer are matchup-specific tools; use them to add artifact/enchantment pressure, graveyard pressure, stack protection, hand disruption, or extra protection without diluting the face-down engine below functional density.

Primary Win Conditions

  • Kadena engine swarm: Build around Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer plus cost compression from Dream Chisel, Obscuring Aether, Ugin, the Ineffable, or the first-face-down discount Kadena supplies, then convert face-down deployments into cards and board presence. Prioritize this path when the opening has acceleration from Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Birds of Paradise, Elvish Mystic, Bloom Tender, Deathrite Shaman, or Sakura-Tribe Elder, because early Kadena with one protected follow-up face-down creature is the deck's cleanest snowball. Execute by adding one or more face-down bodies while preserving hidden identity, then attack once the board can survive blocks or flip tricks. Disruption to respect: commander removal, sweepers, and effects that punish creature-heavy boards; hold Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Counterspell, Swan Song, Lightning Greaves, or Swiftfoot Boots when losing Kadena would strand expensive morph turns.

  • Hidden-threat combat finish: Win by letting face-down creatures represent multiple punishments, then revealing the threat that converts a race: Sagu Mauler for a large resilient attacker, Hooded Hydra for scalable pressure and post-removal material, Deathmist Raptor for recurring pressure, Thousand Winds for a tempo reset, or Bane of the Living for a board-size correction. Prioritize this path when opponents are tapped low, their blockers are committed, or your hand lacks a pure draw engine but has several face-down bodies. Execute attacks before revealing unless the flip must happen precombat to clear blockers or enable lethal damage. Disruption to respect: instant-speed exile, bounce, stack interaction on face-up triggers, and sweepers after you reveal too much identity.

  • Brine lock pressure: Use Brine Elemental with Vesuvan Shapeshifter as a high-priority lock-adjacent finish only when rules-engine legal actions and card-reference metadata confirm the face-up and face-down sequence is available. Setup requires enough mana to keep the sequence operating and enough board pressure to close while opponents lose untap access. Prioritize it against slower boards or players who are already low on mana resources. Do not force this path through open interaction if a normal Kadena engine line is already winning.

  • Face-down payoff overrun: Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Scroll of Fate, Whisperwood Elemental, The Cyber-Controller, and Ugin's Mastery can turn ordinary hidden bodies into a closing board. Prioritize this path when engines are already visible and opponents are spending answers one-for-one. For The Cyber-Controller and Ugin's Mastery, treat exact payoff text as conditional on complete card-reference metadata and current legal actions.

Secondary Win Conditions

  • Value-control attrition: Win long games by pairing Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Fact or Fiction, Primordial Mist, and Kadena draw with selective interaction. Prioritize this when the table is trading resources, life totals are not under immediate pressure, or your commander has already been removed once and recast tax makes blind recommitment expensive. Execution is to draw extra cards, answer only decisive threats with Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Putrefy, Reality Shift, Cyclonic Rift, Counterspell, or Swan Song, then reload with hidden creatures.

  • Tutor-selected pivot: Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, and Green Sun's Zenith should find the missing piece for the visible state rather than a generic finisher. Search for protection when Kadena is the only engine, for Seedborn Muse when instant-window face-down play and interaction can be exploited, for Whisperwood Elemental or Guardian Project when rebuilding, or for creature answers such as Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Silumgar Assassin, Aphetto Exterminator, Bane of the Living, or Thousand Winds when their legal actions match public threats. Do not tutor a text-sensitive face-down answer unless the engine exposes a legal action that actually solves the problem.

  • Ixidron reset pressure: Ixidron is a secondary board-warping plan when opposing creatures are stronger than yours or when turning creatures face down creates a favorable hidden-information battlefield. Prioritize it when your engines and face-down synergies remain useful after the reset. Avoid it when your own revealed high-impact creature or commander is carrying the game and the reset would erase more of your advantage than the opponents'.

  • Creature-land and utility pressure: Zoetic Cavern can contribute hidden-body pressure, while Boseiju, Who Endures, Otawara, Soaring City, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire provide utility rather than primary damage. Use these lands to preserve spell slots and recover or answer key permanents, not as a substitute for assembling the face-down engine.

Emergency Lines

  • Behind on life: Stabilize before adding speculative engines. Use Toxic Deluge, Bane of the Living, Cyclonic Rift, Reality Shift, Putrefy, Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Silumgar Assassin, Aphetto Exterminator, or Thousand Winds only when legal actions show they reduce lethal pressure or reset combat. Do not spend protection on a minor creature if saving Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Seedborn Muse, or a wide board is the survival line.

  • Behind on board: Convert hidden cards into interaction instead of bluffing indefinitely. Flip Ainok Survivalist or Nantuko Vigilante only for legal artifact or enchantment problems, use Willbender, Stratus Dancer, Kheru Spellsnatcher, or Mischievous Quanar only through valid stack actions, and preserve Toxic Deluge as the clean reset when combat math is already lost.

  • Behind on cards: Rebuild around one durable draw source, not scattered morphs. Prioritize Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Fact or Fiction, Primordial Mist, or Den Protector recursion, then resume face-down deployment after the hand is functional.

  • Behind on mana or commander tax: Delay Kadena recast if it consumes the whole turn without protection or follow-up. Use signets, Fellwar Stone, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Deathrite Shaman, pathway lands, fetchlands, and tri/dual lands to rebuild color access, then recast Kadena when the same turn or next turn can produce a face-down creature.

  • Removed win conditions: Shift from lock or payoff lines into value combat. If Brine Elemental, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, The Cyber-Controller, or Ugin's Mastery is unavailable or unsupported, win with hidden attackers, Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Deathmist Raptor, Whisperwood Elemental, Seedborn Muse, and efficient interaction rather than chasing a nonexistent deterministic combo.

Resource Model

  • Hand converts into hidden board presence only when mana can keep identity flexible. Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer turns the first face-down creature each turn into card replacement, so protect hands that contain Kadena plus a legal face-down creature, Scroll of Fate, Primordial Mist, Whisperwood Elemental, or cost reducers. Do not empty the hand into exposed creatures if Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Rhystic Study, or Mystic Remora is not active.

  • Mana is the deck's main bottleneck because face-down deployment and face-up tricks compete in the same turns. Dream Chisel and Obscuring Aether convert mana into extra hidden permanents; Seedborn Muse converts every opponent turn into potential interaction plus face-down development. Keep mana open when Willbender, Stratus Dancer, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Mischievous Quanar, Icefeather Aven, Bane of the Living, or Thousand Winds can punish a visible action.

  • Life converts into speed only for specific costs and must not be spent generically. Use untapped Breeding Pool, Watery Grave, or Overgrown Tomb, fetchlands, Vampiric Tutor, and Toxic Deluge when the tempo gained preserves Kadena, stops lethal pressure, or unlocks a decisive engine turn. Avoid paying extra life merely to cast a nonessential face-down body when opponents already threaten combat damage.

  • Board converts into information pressure by making opponents respect multiple face-up possibilities. A single face-down creature can represent Den Protector, Willbender, Stratus Dancer, removal creatures, or a large threat, so preserve ambiguity until the legal face-up action changes combat, stack resolution, or permanent parity. Revealing a card for minor damage or marginal value spends hidden information and should be avoided.

  • Graveyard is a value resource, not the default win condition. Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, Takenuma, Abandoned Mire, Yedora, Grave Gardener, and sideboard Endurance give graveyard relevance, but the deck should still return Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer to the command zone unless a visible legal line and strategy context make graveyard placement clearly intentional. Do not assume graveyard recursion for commanders without runtime support.

  • Exile is both risk and engine space. Primordial Mist and Ugin, the Ineffable may create playable or relevant exiled resources, while opposing exile removal can permanently remove key morphs. Treat exact The Cyber-Controller and Ugin's Mastery conversions as metadata-sensitive until card-reference support confirms face-down owner information, replay redaction, and legal action exposure.

  • Lands convert into colors, shuffle access, and spell-like utility. Boseiju, Who Endures, Otawara, Soaring City, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire should be held when their channel-like utility is likely to matter, but played as mana when missing a color blocks Kadena or interaction. Zoetic Cavern is a hidden-body resource only when land drops and color stability are already secure.

  • Sacrifice fodder is scarce and should not be spent casually. Sakura-Tribe Elder naturally converts into a basic land, and excess face-down bodies can absorb sweepers or trades, but this list is not built around sacrificing artifact mana, utility lands, or engines. Protect Scroll of Fate, Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Dream Chisel, and Obscuring Aether from being treated as disposable material.

  • Sideboard bullets convert matchup pressure into narrower answers. Collector Ouphe, Grafdigger's Cage, Thoughtseize, Negate, Krosan Grip, Force of Vigor, Opposition Agent, sideboard Veil of Summer, sideboard Heroic Intervention, and Endurance should replace low-impact engines or slow morphs only when public matchup texture justifies the narrower card.

Mana Guide

  • Prioritize blue-green-black access before optimizing tapped-land value. Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer needs all three colors, while early accelerants and interaction pull in different directions: green for Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, Bloom Tender, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Nature-adjacent creature search through Green Sun's Zenith; blue for Counterspell, Swan Song, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, and Fact or Fiction; black for Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Toxic Deluge, Putrefy, and several morph payoffs. Keep hands that produce at least two colors early plus a credible path to the third.

  • Sequence one-mana acceleration before tapped or conditional lands when the turn-one play is real. Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, Deathrite Shaman, and Sol Ring justify untapped sources; do not count enters-tapped Zagoth Triome or a slow utility land as supporting those plays. If no one-mana action exists, lead with Zagoth Triome, Path of Ancestry, a surveil/check-style tapped land when applicable, or a fetchland that fixes the missing color.

  • Fetchlands should find the color pair that completes the next two turns, not the most prestigious dual. Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Fabled Passage, and Prismatic Vista should usually secure green first when ramp or Trail of Mystery matters, blue when holding stack interaction, and black when Toxic Deluge, tutors, or removal are needed. Basic Forest, Island, and Swamp are real targets only for fetches that can legally find them.

  • Play lands before draw when the land drop is required for a known spell or when Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Fact or Fiction, Kadena draw, or Guardian Project cannot change the turn's land choice. Delay the land drop until after draw when fetchland choice, pathway face, shockland untapped payment, Takenuma, Abandoned Mire, Boseiju, Who Endures, Otawara, Soaring City, or Zoetic Cavern depends on newly revealed information.

  • Choose pathway faces by shortage, not habit. Barkchannel Pathway, Clearwater Pathway, and Darkbore Pathway are irreversible color decisions, so prefer the face that lets the hand cast Kadena plus interaction across turns. If already holding Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, Zagoth Triome, Bloom Tender, or multiple signets, use pathways to cover the least redundant color.

  • Keep utility lands in hand only when color and land-count requirements are already met. Boseiju, Who Endures, Otawara, Soaring City, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire are powerful because they can be spell-like, but Kadena hands that miss a third land or third color should play them as mana. Zoetic Cavern should not be your only early land unless the rest of the hand already functions without colored mana.

  • Mulligan mana-light hands that need Kadena but cannot reach three colors. A keepable opener usually has two to three lands or one land plus Sol Ring/mana creature/signets, at least two colors, and either Kadena setup, card draw, or interaction. Ship hands with only colorless artifact mana plus no green creature acceleration when they cannot cast the actual spells in hand.

Mulligan Guide

  • Strong keep: keep two-to-three-land hands that cast early acceleration and reach Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer with protection or follow-up. Examples include Command Tower, Forest, Polluted Delta, Birds of Paradise, Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Den Protector, Counterspell; or Breeding Pool, Undergrowth Stadium, Sol Ring, Dimir Signet, Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Secret Plans, Willbender. These hands either cast Kadena on schedule or develop a face-down engine while holding stack interaction.

  • Medium keep: keep slower hands with excellent color fixing plus one engine, but treat them as vulnerable on the draw. Zagoth Triome, Misty Rainforest, Deathcap Glade, Trail of Mystery, Scroll of Fate, Reality Shift, Bane of the Living is acceptable if opponents are not fast combo or early combat decks. Path of Ancestry, Watery Grave, Forest, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Rhystic Study, Ainok Survivalist, Beast Within is acceptable because it fixes, interacts, and can pivot into Kadena later.

  • Risky keep: keep one-land hands only when the hand has a real turn-one mana source and a visible path to colors. Forest, Elvish Mystic, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Stratus Dancer, Heroic Intervention is risky but functional if the artifact and creature survive. Ship one-land hands where the only acceleration is Deathrite Shaman without a visible fetchland or graveyard context.

  • Automatic ship: ship hands that cannot cast spells through turn two, lack green or artifact acceleration, or rely on colorless mana for colored spells. Examples include Zoetic Cavern, Boseiju, Who Endures, Otawara, Soaring City, Toxic Deluge, Counterspell, Putrefy, Thousand Winds; or Island, Swamp, Dimir Signet, Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Hooded Hydra, Trail of Mystery, Green Sun's Zenith with no green source.

  • Matchup-dependent keep: against creature swarms, value Toxic Deluge, Bane of the Living, Cyclonic Rift, and early blockers higher than slow engines. Against stack/combo decks, prioritize Swan Song, Counterspell, Veil of Summer, Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, and postboard Thoughtseize or Negate. Against artifact-heavy pods, postboard hands with Collector Ouphe, Force of Vigor, or Krosan Grip can keep fewer morph payoffs if mana is stable.

  • Play/draw adjustment: on the play, keep acceleration-heavy hands that can cast Kadena before opponents establish pressure. On the draw, require either interaction, a resilient draw engine such as Mystic Remora or Rhystic Study, or a sweeper plan; do not keep a hand that only hopes a turn-three face-down creature survives.

  • Trap hand: do not keep hands full of expensive face-up threats without enablers. Sagu Mauler, Thousand Winds, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Brine Elemental, Ugin, the Ineffable, two lands, and no ramp is a trap because it has impressive cards but no early action. Also avoid hands built around The Cyber-Controller or Ugin's Mastery as the only plan until card-reference metadata and runtime support expose their exact legal face-down actions.

Turn Arc

  • Turn 1: cast Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, Deathrite Shaman with support, or Sol Ring when available; otherwise lead with fixing. Use Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Fabled Passage, or Prismatic Vista to complete the next two turns, not to maximize abstract value. If no one-mana play exists, prioritize Zagoth Triome, Path of Ancestry, or a land that enters tapped without costing a later Kadena turn.

  • Turn 2: develop mana or the cheapest engine that will matter before Kadena. Preferred plays are Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Fellwar Stone, Dream Chisel, Obscuring Aether, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Secret Plans, or Trail of Mystery. Hold up Swan Song, Counterspell, Veil of Summer, or Reality Shift only when an opponent presents an immediate engine, combo, or commander threat.

  • Turn 3: cast Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer when colors are stable and she is not walking into obvious removal without backup. If Kadena is unsafe, play Scroll of Fate, Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Guardian Project, or a face-down creature that preserves hidden identity. Prefer keeping Willbender, Stratus Dancer, and Kheru Spellsnatcher hidden until their face-up timing can affect a spell or target.

  • Turns 4-5: convert Kadena into repeated face-down pressure and cards while leaving interaction mana when possible. Play one face-down creature per turn cycle when cost reduction or Scroll of Fate makes it efficient, then choose face-up moments for board impact: Ainok Survivalist or Nantuko Vigilante for visible artifact/enchantment problems, Silumgar Assassin, Aphetto Exterminator, or Bane of the Living for creature boards, and Den Protector for a known graveyard return line. Use Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Swiftfoot Boots, or Lightning Greaves to preserve Kadena or a critical engine rather than a replaceable face-down body.

  • Late game: turn hidden creatures into decisive tempo, recursion, or sweep protection instead of revealing for small attacks. Thousand Winds, Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Brine Elemental, Primordial Mist, Whisperwood Elemental, Seedborn Muse, and Ugin, the Ineffable should shift the deck from setup to inevitability only when mana remains for interaction or the table is forced to answer. Use Cyclonic Rift, Toxic Deluge, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, Putrefy, and Reality Shift to clear blockers or stop lethal threats, but do not spend premium answers on minor permanents while a combo, commander, or evasive lethal clock is visible.

Card Roles

Kadena is a hidden-information value engine: protect Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, make the first face-down spell each turn cycle cheap, and reveal creatures only when the face-up effect changes combat, stack interaction, or board texture. The morph suite divides into stack/target tricks (Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Mischievous Quanar), removal/sweeper flips (Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Silumgar Assassin, Aphetto Exterminator, Bane of the Living, Thousand Winds), pressure/resilience (Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Deathmist Raptor, Den Protector), and lock/value threats (Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Brine Elemental).

Engine permanents are keep-or-kill priorities. Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Scroll of Fate, Whisperwood Elemental, Ugin's Mastery, and The Cyber-Controller increase face-down volume or payoff; use them before exposing premium morph identities unless the table presents lethal pressure. Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Fact or Fiction, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, and Green Sun's Zenith refill or find the engine piece that matches the visible board.

Interaction must be spent on threats that beat the hidden board. Counterspell, Swan Song, Veil of Summer, Heroic Intervention, Cyclonic Rift, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, Reality Shift, Putrefy, and Toxic Deluge protect the setup, stop combo, or reset boards that invalidate face-down combat. Mana creatures, signets, and lands are role players: they exist to cast Kadena early and keep mana open for reveal costs.

Card Hover Notes

Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer

  • Deck role: main 1 commander, core face-down engine and command-zone tax decision.
  • Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler; mechanic payoff; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: makes the first face-down creature spell you cast each turn cost {3} less and draws whenever a face-down creature you control enters, including manifests from Scroll of Fate, Primordial Mist, Whisperwood Elemental, and Ugin's Mastery.
  • Timing: cast or recast when UBG is stable and the turn can produce a protected face-down entry soon; delay through commander tax if recasting consumes the whole turn into open removal without Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Counterspell, or Swan Song.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes command-zone mana plus +{2} per prior commander tax; outputs cost reduction, card draw, and pressure from hidden bodies.
  • Partners / packages: face-down entries from Den Protector, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Hooded Hydra, Scroll of Fate, Primordial Mist, Whisperwood Elemental, and Ugin's Mastery.
  • Role peers: no direct peer; closest card-flow alternatives are Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, and Secret Plans.
  • Failure modes: assuming Kadena gives flash, forgetting Scroll of Fate manifests are not spells, or recasting through tax when Guardian Project or Primordial Mist is safer.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: against removal-heavy pods, prioritize protection before commander exposure; against creature swarms, stabilize with Toxic Deluge, Bane of the Living, or Ixidron before paying tax.
  • Low-skill guidance: return Kadena to the command zone by default, track commander tax, and only recast when she can draw from a face-down creature soon.

Den Protector

  • Deck role: main 1 role player, recursion morph and pressure body.
  • Role type: recursion; threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: face-down early for Kadena velocity, then megamorph for {1}{G} to return the best target card from your graveyard to your hand and become harder to block through its power-based restriction.
  • Timing: reveal after Counterspell, Cyclonic Rift, Heroic Intervention, Demonic Tutor, Toxic Deluge, or a spent engine is in the graveyard and the returned card can matter this turn or next.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3} face-down cast or normal {1}{G}, then {1}{G} megamorph; outputs a +1/+1 counter and one graveyard card to hand.
  • Mode map: normal cast is a small creature; face-down cast triggers Kadena and hides the recursion; megamorph reveals only when the graveyard card is worth exposing identity.
  • Partners / packages: recovers Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Cyclonic Rift, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Fact or Fiction, or Toxic Deluge.
  • Role peers: closest recursion overlap is Takenuma, Abandoned Mire; Deathmist Raptor and Yedora, Grave Gardener rebuild bodies instead of returning any card.
  • Failure modes: revealing for a low-impact land or mana rock while a premium answer may be needed later.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: stronger in attrition and control games where opponents have already spent removal or counters.
  • Low-skill guidance: keep it hidden until you can name the graveyard card you want back.

Stratus Dancer

  • Deck role: main 1 role player, hidden stack interaction creature.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: represent a face-down counter for target instant or sorcery spell while also becoming a flying megamorph attacker after the stack job is done.
  • Timing: reveal only with a legal instant or sorcery spell on the stack, prioritizing sweepers, commander removal, extra-turn effects, and combo spells over low-impact cantrips.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3} to cast face down or {1}{U} normally; megamorph costs {1}{U}, adds a +1/+1 counter, and counters target instant or sorcery spell.
  • Mode map: normal cast gives a flying body; face-down cast keeps opponents guessing; megamorph is the stack-interaction mode.
  • Partners / packages: protects Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Seedborn Muse, Guardian Project, Secret Plans, and wide face-down boards from instant or sorcery answers.
  • Role peers: Counterspell hits any target spell; Swan Song hits enchantment, instant, or sorcery spells; Kheru Spellsnatcher hits any spell but costs much more to reveal.
  • Failure modes: revealing proactively, trying to counter a creature/artifact/planeswalker spell, or spending it before a sweeper window.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest when opponents see a face-down creature and must respect hidden permission.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not turn it face up unless the rules engine shows an instant or sorcery spell target.

Willbender

  • Deck role: main 1 role player, target-redirection morph.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; interaction-stack; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: keeps a face-down threat that can change the target of a spell or ability with a single target, protecting Kadena or turning opposing removal toward a better legal target.
  • Timing: reveal only while a single-target spell or ability is on the stack and a better legal target exists.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3} to cast face down or {1}{U} to morph; outputs target reassignment, not a counter and not protection from untargeted effects.
  • Mode map: normal cast is rarely preferred; face-down cast preserves hidden interaction; morph reveal is the redirection event.
  • Partners / packages: protects Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Seedborn Muse, Beast Whisperer, Guardian Project-enabled creature turns, and high-value face-down creatures.
  • Role peers: Heroic Intervention protects all permanents from many targeted effects; Veil of Summer blocks blue/black targeting; Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves protect one equipped creature.
  • Failure modes: trying to answer a sweeper, a spell with multiple targets, or an effect with no targets.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best versus removal-heavy or targeted-combo decks; weaker against Toxic Deluge-style -X/-X effects and sacrifice edicts.
  • Low-skill guidance: if the stack object has no single target, keep Willbender face down.

Vesuvan Shapeshifter

  • Deck role: main 1 flex slot, repeatable clone morph and lock-adjacent payoff.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; mechanic payoff; role glue; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: copies the best creature on the battlefield as it enters or turns face up, then can turn itself face down at your upkeep to reuse morph identity and face-up triggers.
  • Timing: reveal when copying Brine Elemental, Sagu Mauler, Seedborn Muse, an opposing finisher, or a utility creature changes the game; avoid spending it on a blank 2/2 copy.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3} face-down cast or {3}{U}{U} normal cast, then {1}{U} to morph; outputs a temporary copy until it turns face down.
  • Mode map: normal cast copies immediately; face-down cast triggers Kadena and hides the clone; upkeep trigger can reset it for a later copy.
  • Partners / packages: with Brine Elemental, repeated turn-down and turn-up can make opponents skip untap steps; with Secret Plans, each turn-face-up draws.
  • Role peers: no direct peer; closest flexible payoff is Ixidron for face-down board reshaping and Mischievous Quanar for repeatable stack tricks.
  • Failure modes: copying a creature that will not matter, forgetting it loses copied identity when turned face down, or forcing the Brine line into open interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: stronger against battlefields with premium creatures to copy or slower pods vulnerable to untap denial.
  • Low-skill guidance: copy a creature only when you can explain why that exact creature matters.

Brine Elemental

  • Deck role: main 1 payoff threat, high-mana morph tempo piece.
  • Role type: mechanic payoff; threat/clock; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: turns face up to make each opponent skip their next untap step, buying a full tempo cycle for Kadena's hidden board to attack or rebuild.
  • Timing: reveal before opponents would untap when the skipped untap step prevents a comeback, protects a lethal setup, or starts the Vesuvan Shapeshifter repeat line.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3} face-down cast or {4}{U}{U} normal cast, then {5}{U}{U} to morph; outputs untap denial for each opponent's next untap step.
  • Mode map: normal cast is an expensive body; face-down cast hides the payoff and can trigger Kadena; morph reveal is the tempo event.
  • Partners / packages: Vesuvan Shapeshifter can copy and reset this effect; Secret Plans draws from the turn-face-up; Dream Chisel and Obscuring Aether cheapen the face-down cast.
  • Role peers: Thousand Winds and overloaded Cyclonic Rift create tempo resets, but neither denies untaps.
  • Failure modes: revealing when opponents have already spent their relevant mana or when you cannot pressure during the skipped untap cycle.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best against big-mana and control boards; weak when creature pressure will kill you before untap denial matters.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not turn it up just because you can pay; wait until skipped untaps protect a real attack or engine turn.

Kheru Spellsnatcher

  • Deck role: main 1 payoff, expensive hidden hard-counter swing.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; engine payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: face-down threat that can counter target spell, exile it if countered this way, and let you cast that card without paying its mana cost for as long as it remains exiled.
  • Timing: reveal for a decisive spell on the stack: a sweeper, game-winning spell, commander-breaking removal, or high-value tutor payoff.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3} face-down cast or {3}{U} normal cast, then {4}{U}{U} morph; outputs counter, exile, and future cast access if the spell is countered.
  • Mode map: normal cast is a medium creature; face-down cast hides the threat; morph reveal is the counter-and-steal mode.
  • Partners / packages: protects Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Primordial Mist, Seedborn Muse, Guardian Project, and committed face-down boards.
  • Role peers: Counterspell is cheaper and hits any spell; Stratus Dancer is cheaper but limited to instant or sorcery spells; Swan Song is narrower and grants a Bird.
  • Failure modes: using it on a bait spell, tapping out so it cannot threaten the stack, or expecting the steal if the spell cannot be countered.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest against big spells and combo; weak against creature swarms with many low-value casts.
  • Low-skill guidance: save it for the scariest spell on the stack, not the first spell opponents cast.

Ainok Survivalist

  • Deck role: main 1 role player, megamorph artifact/enchantment answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; mechanic payoff; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: stays face down until turning face up can destroy target artifact or enchantment an opponent controls.
  • Timing: reveal for a visible permanent that stops Kadena velocity, shuts off face-down creatures, enables a combo, or threatens lethal advantage.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3} face-down cast or {1}{G} normal cast, then {1}{G} megamorph; outputs a +1/+1 counter and destruction of an opponent-controlled artifact or enchantment.
  • Mode map: normal cast is a small body; face-down cast triggers Kadena and hides the answer; megamorph is the removal mode.
  • Partners / packages: overlaps with Nantuko Vigilante, Boseiju, Who Endures, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, sideboard Force of Vigor, and sideboard Krosan Grip.
  • Role peers: Nantuko Vigilante can destroy any target artifact or enchantment, including your own if necessary; Ainok Survivalist is limited to an opponent's permanent.
  • Failure modes: revealing without a legal opponent artifact/enchantment or spending it on a low-impact mana rock while a prison piece remains.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus artifact/enchantment engines and stax pieces; low value versus creature-only pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: only turn it up when the target line says artifact or enchantment controlled by an opponent.

Nantuko Vigilante

  • Deck role: main 1 role player, morph artifact/enchantment answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; mechanic payoff; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: second hidden artifact/enchantment answer, with broader target wording than Ainok Survivalist because it destroys target artifact or enchantment without the opponent-control restriction.
  • Timing: keep face down until the artifact or enchantment target is worth exposing identity; reveal before combat only if removing that permanent changes attacks or survival.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3} face-down cast or {3}{G} normal cast, then {1}{G} morph; outputs one artifact/enchantment destroyed.
  • Mode map: normal cast is a 3/2; face-down cast triggers Kadena; morph reveal is the removal action.
  • Partners / packages: works with Secret Plans for a draw on turning face up and with Trail of Mystery for +2/+2 if it is a creature after turning face up.
  • Role peers: Ainok Survivalist, Boseiju, Who Endures, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, sideboard Force of Vigor, and sideboard Krosan Grip.
  • Failure modes: revealing just to attack, or destroying a minor artifact while a game-ending enchantment remains.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: better than Aphetto Exterminator or Silumgar Assassin when opposing threats are artifacts/enchantments rather than creatures.
  • Low-skill guidance: wait for a real artifact or enchantment target; this card's value is the flip trigger.

Sagu Mauler

  • Deck role: main 1 payoff threat, resilient finisher.
  • Role type: threat/clock; protection/evasion; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: gives the deck a large trample, hexproof closer that can be cast face down for Kadena value and revealed once combat damage matters.
  • Timing: reveal or hard-cast when opponents are low on clean answers, when trample pushes through blockers, or when a protected clock is more valuable than another hidden 2/2.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {4}{G}{U} normal cast or {3} face-down plus {3}{G}{U} morph; outputs a resilient trampling attacker.
  • Mode map: normal cast is honest pressure; face-down cast preserves hidden identity and triggers Kadena; morph reveal turns a 2/2 into a hexproof trampler.
  • Partners / packages: Lightning Greaves gives haste but shroud blocks later targeting; Swiftfoot Boots adds haste while allowing your own future targeting; Trail of Mystery adds +2/+2 on turn-up.
  • Role peers: Hooded Hydra gives resilience through tokens; Thousand Winds gives tempo; Deathmist Raptor gives recursion.
  • Failure modes: using it as early vanilla pressure when stack interaction or board control is needed.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus spot-removal midrange; weaker versus sacrifice, sweepers, and go-wide races.
  • Low-skill guidance: turn it up when trample plus hexproof changes the race, not for one extra ordinary attack.

Icefeather Aven

  • Deck role: main 1 role player, flying tempo morph.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; protection/evasion; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: bounces another target creature when turned face up, clearing a blocker, saving one of your creatures, or setting back an opposing commander.
  • Timing: reveal in combat, before a key attack, or in response to removal if returning your own creature is the best legal target.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {G}{U} normal cast or {3} face-down plus {1}{G}{U} morph; outputs optional bounce of another target creature and a flying body.
  • Mode map: normal cast is a small flyer; face-down cast triggers Kadena; morph reveal is the tempo-bounce mode.
  • Partners / packages: saves Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, resets Den Protector or Ainok Survivalist for later cast lines, and clears blockers for Sagu Mauler or Hooded Hydra.
  • Role peers: Cyclonic Rift and Otawara, Soaring City bounce broader permanent classes; Thousand Winds bounces all other tapped creatures.
  • Failure modes: trying to target itself, bouncing a low-impact creature while a lethal attacker remains, or ignoring commander tax consequences when bouncing an opponent's commander.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against single large attackers and commander-centric tempo; weak against enter-the-battlefield value creatures you do not want to reset.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose bounce only when the exact creature returned changes combat, survival, or a commander turn.

Hooded Hydra

  • Deck role: main 1 payoff threat, scalable resilient body.
  • Role type: threat/clock; engine fuel/material; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: becomes a large morph threat with five +1/+1 counters when turned face up, or scales from hand with X to create Snake tokens when it dies.
  • Timing: cast face down when Kadena value and hidden pressure matter; hard-cast with a meaningful X when you need a body that leaves material after removal.
  • Inputs / outputs: normal cast consumes {X}{G}{G} and enters with X +1/+1 counters; morph consumes {3} then {3}{G}{G}; death outputs 1/1 green Snake tokens equal to its counters.
  • Mode map: X-cast is scalable board presence; face-down line is Kadena-friendly; morph reveal creates a five-counter threat.
  • Partners / packages: Trail of Mystery adds +2/+2 after turn-up; Secret Plans draws on turn-up; Yedora, Grave Gardener can convert it to a face-down Forest if it dies as another nontoken creature.
  • Role peers: Sagu Mauler is more protected; Deathmist Raptor recurs; Whisperwood Elemental creates ongoing face-down bodies.
  • Failure modes: tutoring it with Green Sun's Zenith can be poor because it enters without a chosen X; relying on tokens into exile removal loses the death payoff.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against one-for-one destroy removal; weaker against exile, bounce, or -X/-X effects.
  • Low-skill guidance: prefer the face-down line unless you can pay a large X or need Snake tokens after death.

Thousand Winds

  • Deck role: main 1 payoff, mass tempo morph and flying closer.
  • Role type: interaction-sweeper; threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: turns face up to return all other tapped creatures to their owners' hands, then attacks as a flyer.
  • Timing: reveal after opponents tap creatures to attack, or after your attack if bouncing your own tapped creatures is acceptable; avoid if Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Seedborn Muse, or other key creatures are tapped and would be returned.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {4}{U}{U} normal cast or {3} face-down plus {5}{U}{U} morph; outputs a broad tapped-creature bounce reset.
  • Mode map: normal cast is a flying body; face-down cast triggers Kadena; morph reveal is the mass-bounce mode.
  • Partners / packages: Secret Plans draws on turn-up; Trail of Mystery pumps it after turn-up; Cyclonic Rift is the noncreature-permanent reset peer.
  • Role peers: Cyclonic Rift hits nonland permanents you do not control; Bane of the Living applies -X/-X; Ixidron turns nontoken creatures face down.
  • Failure modes: forgetting it bounces your other tapped creatures too, or using it when destruction/exile is required.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest against attack-heavy creature boards and token-adjacent pressure; weaker against untapped combo creatures.
  • Low-skill guidance: check which of your creatures are tapped before turning this face up.

Grim Haruspex

  • Deck role: main 1 value engine, death-trigger draw creature with morph.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: rewards trades and sweepers by drawing whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, including face-down nontoken creatures.
  • Timing: cast before expected combat trades, destroy sweepers, or sacrifice-heavy turns; face-down mode is useful when Kadena needs hidden creature density.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{B} normal cast or {3} face-down plus {B} morph; outputs card draw from other nontoken creature deaths.
  • Mode map: normal cast exposes the draw engine; face-down cast triggers Kadena and hides the payoff; morph reveal turns on death triggers before creatures die.
  • Partners / packages: pairs with Toxic Deluge, Bane of the Living, Yedora, Grave Gardener, Hooded Hydra, and ordinary face-down blocks.
  • Role peers: Guardian Project draws on nontoken creature entry; Beast Whisperer draws on creature cast; Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer draws on face-down creature entry.
  • Failure modes: revealing after creatures have already died, or expecting it to draw when it dies itself.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus removal-heavy and combat-heavy pods; weak against exile effects and bounce resets.
  • Low-skill guidance: get it face up before the creatures you care about die.

Mischievous Quanar

  • Deck role: main 1 flex trick, repeatable spell-copy morph.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; engine payoff; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: copies target instant or sorcery spell when turned face up and can pay {3}{U}{U} later to turn itself face down for another copy window.
  • Timing: reveal with a high-impact instant or sorcery spell on the stack where a copy benefits you: Cyclonic Rift, Fact or Fiction, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, or an opponent's powerful spell with legal targets.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {4}{U} normal cast or {3} face-down plus {1}{U}{U} morph; repeat setup costs {3}{U}{U}; outputs a copied instant or sorcery and optional new targets.
  • Mode map: normal cast exposes a 3/3; face-down cast triggers Kadena; morph reveal copies a spell; activated ability resets the hidden state.
  • Partners / packages: Secret Plans draws each time it turns face up; Seedborn Muse helps hold reset and reveal mana across turns.
  • Role peers: Stratus Dancer counters instant/sorcery spells; Kheru Spellsnatcher counters any spell; Willbender changes a single target instead of copying.
  • Failure modes: copying a spell that helps an opponent more, or revealing without a legal instant or sorcery target.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best in stack-heavy games; weaker against creature boards with few spells worth copying.
  • Low-skill guidance: if there is no instant or sorcery spell on the stack, do not reveal it.

Silumgar Assassin

  • Deck role: main 1 role player, megamorph creature removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; protection/evasion; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: turns face up to destroy target creature with power 3 or less an opponent controls, while its own blocking restriction can make it hard for larger creatures to block.
  • Timing: reveal when the legal target is a key utility creature, evasive clock, combo creature, or blocker whose removal changes combat.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{B} normal cast or {3} face-down plus {2}{B} megamorph; outputs a +1/+1 counter and destruction of a small opposing creature.
  • Mode map: normal cast is a small evasive attacker; face-down cast triggers Kadena; megamorph reveal is restricted removal.
  • Partners / packages: Secret Plans draws on turn-up; Trail of Mystery adds +2/+2 after turn-up; Aphetto Exterminator covers toughness-based removal without opponent-control restriction.
  • Role peers: Aphetto Exterminator gives -3/-3 to target creature; Reality Shift exiles any target creature; Putrefy destroys artifact or creature.
  • Failure modes: targeting a creature with power greater than 3 or using it on a replaceable attacker while a combo creature remains.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus small commander and utility creature decks; weaker against giant threats.
  • Low-skill guidance: check the target's power before choosing the face-up removal action.

Aphetto Exterminator

  • Deck role: main 1 role player, morph -3/-3 creature interaction.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; mechanic payoff; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: turns face up to give target creature -3/-3 until end of turn, killing utility creatures such as Birds of Paradise, Elvish Mystic, and Deathrite Shaman or shrinking larger attackers and blockers for combat.
  • Timing: reveal during combat or main phase when -3/-3 changes survival, removes a utility creature, or lets an attack connect.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{B} normal cast or {3} face-down plus {3}{B} morph; outputs a temporary -3/-3 effect on target creature.
  • Mode map: normal cast is a body; face-down cast triggers Kadena; morph reveal is the shrink/removal mode.
  • Partners / packages: Secret Plans draws on turn-up; Trail of Mystery can make Aphetto Exterminator attack larger after turn-up; combines with combat damage from Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, and Zoetic Cavern.
  • Role peers: Silumgar Assassin destroys an opponent creature with power 3 or less; Bane of the Living applies -X/-X across the battlefield; Toxic Deluge applies global -X/-X.
  • Failure modes: treating damage as shrink, or aiming -3/-3 at a creature too large to die when combat does not finish it.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: useful against creature swarms and utility creatures; low value against artifact/enchantment engines or spell combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it when -3 toughness actually kills or changes combat math.

Bane of the Living

  • Deck role: main 1 sweeper, scalable morph reset.
  • Role type: interaction-sweeper; mechanic payoff; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: turns face up with morph {X}{B}{B} so each creature gets -X/-X until end of turn, clearing boards that beat face-down combat.
  • Timing: reveal when the board requires a reset, choosing X from visible toughness, your own creature losses, and survival needs.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{B}{B} normal cast or {3} face-down plus {X}{B}{B}; outputs a global -X/-X effect, not damage and not destroy.
  • Mode map: normal cast is a body; face-down cast hides the sweeper; morph reveal is the scalable -X/-X reset.
  • Partners / packages: Grim Haruspex can draw from dying Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Ainok Survivalist, and Nantuko Vigilante; Yedora, Grave Gardener can convert those dying nontoken creatures into face-down Forest lands.
  • Role peers: Toxic Deluge uses life for -X/-X; Ixidron turns nontoken creatures face down; Cyclonic Rift returns opposing nonland permanents when overloaded.
  • Failure modes: wiping out Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Seedborn Muse, or your hidden board when a single-target Reality Shift or Putrefy would solve the problem.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best versus go-wide creature boards; weak versus planeswalkers, artifacts, enchantments, and noncreature combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the smallest X that stops lethal or breaks the board.

Deathmist Raptor

  • Deck role: main 1 resilient threat, graveyard-recurring megamorph creature.
  • Role type: recursion; threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: pressures with deathtouch and returns from your graveyard to the battlefield face up or face down whenever a permanent you control is turned face up.
  • Timing: value it highly when it is in the graveyard and you can turn up Den Protector, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Bane of the Living, Zoetic Cavern, or another face-down permanent.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{G}{G} normal cast or {3} face-down plus {4}{G} megamorph; outputs recurring battlefield material from graveyard.
  • Mode map: normal cast gives deathtouch; face-down cast triggers Kadena; megamorph adds a +1/+1 counter; graveyard trigger can return it face up or face down.
  • Partners / packages: Secret Plans and Trail of Mystery reward turn-up events; Grim Haruspex and Yedora, Grave Gardener make creature deaths less punishing.
  • Role peers: Den Protector returns any card to hand; Takenuma, Abandoned Mire returns a creature or planeswalker to hand; Yedora, Grave Gardener returns dying nontoken creatures as Forest lands.
  • Failure modes: expecting recursion without a turn-face-up event or through Grafdigger's Cage.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus destroy-based removal and combat trades; weak versus exile graveyard hate.
  • Low-skill guidance: if Raptor is in the graveyard, look for a safe face-up trigger before spending other recursion.

Scroll of Fate

  • Deck role: main 1 core engine, artifact face-down enabler.
  • Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: taps to manifest a card from your hand, turning excess or high-impact cards into face-down creatures that trigger Kadena without casting a spell.
  • Timing: activate on opponent end steps, in response windows where hiding a card matters, or when Kadena is out and the draw trigger is worth spending a hand card.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3} to cast, then tap plus one card from hand; outputs a manifested 2/2 face-down creature that can be turned face up for its mana cost if it is a creature card.
  • Partners / packages: triggers Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, works with Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, and Whisperwood Elemental.
  • Role peers: Primordial Mist manifests from library each end step; Whisperwood Elemental manifests at end step; Ugin's Mastery manifests from colorless creature casts.
  • Failure modes: manifesting a noncreature you needed to cast soon, forgetting it is not a creature spell for Beast Whisperer, or losing hidden-identity support in replay.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent versus control and removal because it makes threats at instant speed; weaker under Collector Ouphe, which stops artifact activated abilities.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it to make hidden creatures after Kadena resolves, but do not hide your only needed answer.

Secret Plans

  • Deck role: main 1 core engine, face-down toughness and turn-up draw payoff.
  • Role type: engine piece; mechanic payoff; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: gives face-down creatures you control +0/+1 and draws whenever a permanent you control is turned face up.
  • Timing: cast before committing multiple face-down creatures when you expect combat or repeated turn-up triggers; delay only if holding up Counterspell, Swan Song, or Reality Shift is urgent.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {G}{U}; outputs more durable face-down blockers and card draw from Den Protector, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Bane of the Living, Zoetic Cavern, and other turn-up events.
  • Partners / packages: pairs with the entire registered face-down creature group: Den Protector, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Brine Elemental, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Sagu Mauler, Icefeather Aven, Hooded Hydra, Thousand Winds, Grim Haruspex, Mischievous Quanar, Silumgar Assassin, Aphetto Exterminator, Bane of the Living, Deathmist Raptor, and Zoetic Cavern.
  • Role peers: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer draws on face-down entry; Guardian Project draws on nontoken creature entry; Beast Whisperer draws on creature cast.
  • Failure modes: expecting it to draw from a face-down creature entering; it draws from turning face up, while Kadena draws from entering.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against small attackers because +0/+1 changes face-down combat; vulnerable to enchantment removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: play it before turning creatures face up when possible.

Trail of Mystery

  • Deck role: main 1 core engine, basic-search smoothing and turn-up combat payoff.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mechanic payoff; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: whenever a face-down creature you control enters, may search for basic Island, Swamp, or Forest, reveal it, put it into hand, then shuffle; whenever a permanent you control turns face up, if it is a creature, it gets +2/+2 until end of turn.
  • Timing: cast early if colors or land drops matter; use turn-up pump before damage when +2/+2 changes combat.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{G}; outputs basic-land cards to hand and temporary creature pump from turn-up events.
  • Partners / packages: face-down entries from Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Scroll of Fate, Primordial Mist, Whisperwood Elemental, and Ugin's Mastery.
  • Role peers: Sakura-Tribe Elder, Fabled Passage, and Prismatic Vista find basics to battlefield; Trail finds them to hand.
  • Failure modes: treating the search as ramp, searching for nonbasics, or forgetting the +2/+2 applies only if the turned-up permanent is a creature.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in mana-hungry games and combat races; weaker when hand already has stable UBG and enchantments are under pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: get missing Island, Swamp, or Forest; do not search for a dual land.

Primordial Mist

  • Deck role: main 1 engine, manifest and face-down card-access piece.
  • Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: manifests the top card of your library at your end step and can exile a face-down permanent you control face up so you may play that card this turn while still paying costs and obeying timing.
  • Timing: cast in games expected to last multiple turns; use the exile-play ability when the face-down permanent is otherwise stuck or the revealed card solves the current turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {4}{U}; outputs one end-step face-down creature per turn and a way to convert face-down permanents into playable cards.
  • Partners / packages: triggers Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Trail of Mystery, and Guardian Project only when the rules engine confirms the appropriate entry; Secret Plans rewards later turn-up events.
  • Role peers: Scroll of Fate manifests from hand; Whisperwood Elemental manifests from library; Ugin's Mastery manifests from colorless creature spells.
  • Failure modes: exiling a face-down permanent when you cannot legally play the card this turn, or relying on hidden identity without replay redaction support.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus attrition and control; slow against fast creature pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: let it make end-step bodies, and use the exile ability only when you can actually cast or play the revealed card.

Ixidron

  • Deck role: main 1 reset piece, face-down board disruption creature.
  • Role type: interaction-sweeper; mechanic enabler; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: as it enters, turns all other nontoken creatures face down as 2/2 creatures, then has power and toughness equal to the number of face-down creatures on the battlefield.
  • Timing: cast when opposing face-up creatures are more dangerous than your own face-up commander or engines.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{U}{U}; outputs a non-targeting creature reset and a large body scaled by face-down creature count.
  • Partners / packages: leaves existing face-down creatures aligned with Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, and Kadena's hidden board; can protect you from oversized opposing commanders by removing their text.
  • Role peers: Toxic Deluge and Bane of the Living shrink/kill creatures; Thousand Winds bounces tapped creatures; Cyclonic Rift bounces opposing nonland permanents.
  • Failure modes: turning your own Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Seedborn Muse, Beast Whisperer, or Yedora, Grave Gardener face down when those engines matter more.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus creature-commanders and keyword-heavy boards; weaker against tokens, because it turns nontoken creatures only.
  • Low-skill guidance: count your important face-up creatures before casting it.

The Cyber-Controller

  • Deck role: main 1 singleton/flex slot, high-risk face-down payoff.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; mechanic payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: mills each opponent for X, puts all creature cards milled this way onto the battlefield face down under your control as 2/2 Cyberman artifact creatures, and pumps other artifact creatures you control +1/+1.
  • Timing: cast when X is large enough to create multiple bodies or disrupt graveyard-light opponents, and when graveyard decks will not profit from the mill.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {X}{U}{U}{B}; outputs opponent mill, face-down artifact creature bodies, artifact-creature pump, and possible Kadena draws from those face-down creatures entering.
  • Partners / packages: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer draws from face-down creature entries; Secret Plans buffs face-down creatures; Trail of Mystery searches basics from face-down entries.
  • Role peers: Whisperwood Elemental, Primordial Mist, Scroll of Fate, and Ugin's Mastery also create face-down creatures without relying on opponents' libraries.
  • Failure modes: helping graveyard opponents, overpaying into a low creature hit rate, or trusting replay/hidden-owner support before Veles exposes legal actions clearly.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus creature-dense opponents without graveyard payoffs; dangerous versus reanimator or escape-style decks.
  • Low-skill guidance: only choose this line when the engine shows clear face-down entries and milling opponents is not helping them.

Yedora, Grave Gardener

  • Deck role: main 1 resilience engine, nontoken creature death converter.
  • Role type: recursion; engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, may return it to the battlefield face down under its owner's control as a Forest land with no other types or abilities.
  • Timing: cast before expected trades or destroy sweepers when turning creature losses into mana resources is better than preserving graveyard recursion.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {4}{G}; outputs face-down Forest lands from other nontoken creature deaths, not Kadena draw because they return as lands rather than creatures.
  • Partners / packages: works with dying Den Protector, Grim Haruspex, Hooded Hydra, face-down creatures, and Bane of the Living; conflicts with graveyard lines from Deathmist Raptor and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire.
  • Role peers: Whisperwood Elemental gives face-up nontoken creatures manifest insurance; Den Protector and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire recover cards to hand.
  • Failure modes: assuming the returned face-down Forest still has creature abilities or can attack/block; use only turn-up actions the rules engine exposes.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus destroy-based sweepers; weak versus exile, bounce, and Grafdigger's Cage.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the return when losing the creature is worse than having an extra Forest, but remember it is not a creature anymore.

Ugin's Mastery

  • Deck role: main 1 singleton/flex slot, colorless-creature face-down payoff.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; mechanic payoff; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: manifests the top card of your library whenever you cast a colorless creature spell, and may turn a face-down creature you control face up when you attack with creatures with total power 6 or greater.
  • Timing: cast before turns with face-down creature spells, because face-down creature spells are colorless creature spells; attack trigger matters once your visible power reaches 6.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {4}; outputs manifest triggers and free turn-face-up pressure from attacks with total power 6 or greater.
  • Partners / packages: Den Protector, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Brine Elemental, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Zoetic Cavern, and other face-down casts trigger the first ability; Secret Plans and Trail of Mystery reward turn-up events.
  • Role peers: Primordial Mist and Whisperwood Elemental manifest from library without requiring colorless creature casts.
  • Failure modes: assuming colored face-up creatures trigger it, or turning up a manifested noncreature without rules-engine support.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in board-stall games where multiple 2/2s can attack for total power 6; slow versus fast combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: play it when you will cast face-down creatures, then attack with at least total power 6 before using the turn-up trigger.

Dream Chisel

  • Deck role: main 1 setup artifact, face-down cost reducer.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: reduces face-down creature spells you cast by {1}, helping Kadena double-spell and making hidden bodies cheaper when Kadena is absent or taxed.
  • Timing: cast before face-down development unless holding up Swan Song, Counterspell, or Reality Shift is required.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}; outputs a static cost reduction for face-down creature spells, not for manifest abilities and not for morph turn-face-up costs.
  • Partners / packages: stacks with Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Obscuring Aether, and Ugin, the Ineffable for face-down creature spell costs.
  • Role peers: Obscuring Aether is the enchantment version with a self-face-down ability; Ugin, the Ineffable reduces colorless spells including face-down creature spells.
  • Failure modes: treating it as colored fixing, expecting it to reduce Scroll of Fate activation, or losing too much tempo when no face-down cards are ready.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in slow/opening hands with multiple morphs; weaker against artifact-hate boards.
  • Low-skill guidance: play it early when your hand has face-down creatures; it does not help cast Kadena's colored mana cost.

Obscuring Aether

  • Deck role: main 1 setup enchantment, face-down cost reducer with self-hide text.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: reduces face-down creature spells you cast by {1}; can pay {1}{G} to turn itself face down into a 2/2 creature.
  • Timing: cast early before face-down chains; use the self-face-down ability only when a 2/2 body or hidden permanent matters more than keeping the cost reducer face up.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {G}; outputs static face-down spell discount; self-hide consumes {1}{G} and removes its visible enchantment abilities while face down.
  • Mode map: face-up enchantment mode is the primary cost reducer; face-down mode is a creature body and hidden-information play, but not ongoing cost reduction.
  • Partners / packages: stacks with Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Dream Chisel, and Ugin, the Ineffable for face-down creature spells.
  • Role peers: Dream Chisel reduces the same spell class without becoming a creature; Ugin, the Ineffable reduces colorless spells.
  • Failure modes: turning it face down too early and losing the reducer, or expecting it to reduce turn-face-up costs.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong when opponents are not pressuring enchantments; weak when your board needs interaction more than cost savings.
  • Low-skill guidance: leave it face up unless you clearly need the extra 2/2.

Ugin, the Ineffable

  • Deck role: main 1 top-end engine/removal planeswalker.
  • Role type: engine piece; interaction-removal; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: reduces colorless spells you cast by {2}, creates delayed-card Spirit tokens with +1, and destroys target permanent that's one or more colors with -3.
  • Timing: cast when you can protect a planeswalker, when -3 removes a decisive colored permanent, or when repeated +1 card flow matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {6}; outputs cost reduction for colorless spells such as Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dream Chisel, Scroll of Fate, Ugin's Mastery, and face-down creature spells.
  • Mode map: static mode reduces colorless spells only; +1 exiles the top card face down, lets you look at it, makes a 2/2 colorless Spirit, and moves the card to hand when the token leaves; -3 destroys target permanent that's one or more colors.
  • Partners / packages: supports face-down creature spell chains with Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Dream Chisel, and Obscuring Aether.
  • Role peers: Beast Within and Assassin's Trophy remove broader permanents; Guardian Project and Rhystic Study draw without needing a planeswalker to survive.
  • Failure modes: assuming Ugin reduces colored spells like Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, or using -3 on colorless targets it cannot destroy.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus colored permanent engines and attrition; vulnerable to wide attackers.
  • Low-skill guidance: use -3 only on a colored permanent and do not count Ugin as fixing colored mana.

Seedborn Muse

  • Deck role: main 1 engine multiplier, untap-window creature.
  • Role type: engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: untaps all permanents you control during each other player's untap step, letting you hold interaction, activate Scroll of Fate, and pay turn-face-up costs across the table.
  • Timing: cast when you have instant-speed actions or face-up tricks to use on opponents' turns; protect it if it unlocks multiple response windows.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{G}{G}; outputs repeated untaps of lands, mana artifacts, creatures, and utility lands.
  • Partners / packages: strongest with Scroll of Fate, Counterspell, Swan Song, Cyclonic Rift, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, Reality Shift, Putrefy, Willbender, Stratus Dancer, Kheru Spellsnatcher, and Mischievous Quanar.
  • Role peers: Bloom Tender provides burst colored mana; Wilderness Reclamation is not in this deck, so no direct duplicate exists.
  • Failure modes: assuming Seedborn gives flash for face-down creature spells; it untaps permanents but does not change casting timing.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in interactive pods; weaker when opponents can remove it before you untap.
  • Low-skill guidance: after casting Muse, leave mana open for real instant-speed cards and face-up activations.

Guardian Project

  • Deck role: main 1 draw engine, singleton creature-entry payoff.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: draws when a nontoken creature enters under your control if it does not share a name with another creature you control or a creature card in your graveyard, which is usually favorable in Commander.
  • Timing: cast before creature-heavy turns, especially before face-down creatures or utility creatures enter.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{G}; outputs card draw from nontoken creature entries, not from tokens and not from noncreature manifests if rules show they are not creatures.
  • Partners / packages: pairs with Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, face-down creature casts, The Cyber-Controller creature hits, and normal creatures like Seedborn Muse, Beast Whisperer, and Yedora, Grave Gardener.
  • Role peers: Beast Whisperer draws on creature cast; Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer draws on face-down creature entry; Secret Plans draws on turn-face-up.
  • Failure modes: playing it after the creature chain, or expecting it to draw from Hooded Hydra Snake tokens.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in removal-light attrition; weaker when tapping four mana exposes you to a combo turn.
  • Low-skill guidance: play this before creatures when safe, then cast creatures to refill.

Beast Whisperer

  • Deck role: main 1 creature-cast draw engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection; mechanic payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: draws whenever you cast a creature spell, including face-down creature spells because they are creature spells while cast face down.
  • Timing: cast before a turn with multiple creature spells or before Kadena chains, but avoid tapping out if stack interaction is required.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{G}{G}; outputs a card per creature spell cast, not from Scroll of Fate, Primordial Mist, or Whisperwood Elemental manifest entries because those are not casts.
  • Partners / packages: strongest with Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Dream Chisel, Obscuring Aether, and face-down creatures such as Den Protector, Willbender, and Ainok Survivalist.
  • Role peers: Guardian Project draws on nontoken creature entry; Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer draws on face-down creature entry; Rhystic Study draws from opponents' spell choices.
  • Failure modes: assuming manifest creates a Beast Whisperer draw, or exposing a 2/3 engine into easy removal with no follow-up.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus midrange and control if protected; slow versus fast aggro.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast creatures after Beast Whisperer, not before, when the turn is safe.

Sakura-Tribe Elder

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, creature ramp and blocker.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: sacrifices to search for basic Island, Swamp, or Forest, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.
  • Timing: cast early to fix missing Kadena colors; block then sacrifice before damage only if the ramp matters more than dealing combat damage.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{G}; outputs one tapped registered basic land and can put a nontoken creature death into Grim Haruspex or Yedora, Grave Gardener contexts.
  • Partners / packages: Path of Ancestry scries if its mana casts this Snake Shaman; Yedora, Grave Gardener can return it as a face-down Forest if it dies while Yedora is present.
  • Role peers: Fabled Passage and Prismatic Vista find basics from the land slot; Elvish Mystic and Birds of Paradise accelerate without sacrificing.
  • Failure modes: searching for a nonbasic, forgetting the basic enters tapped, or sacrificing before knowing which color is missing.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in mana-light hands and versus removal where land-based fixing survives.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it to get the missing basic color for Kadena.

Elvish Mystic

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, one-mana green accelerant.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: adds {G} to accelerate Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Trail of Mystery, Obscuring Aether, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and green morph reveal costs.
  • Timing: cast on turn one whenever a green source is available and the hand wants early acceleration.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {G}; outputs one green mana per tap and a small nontoken body for Guardian Project or Grim Haruspex contexts.
  • Partners / packages: helps cast Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Seedborn Muse, Beast Whisperer, Yedora, Grave Gardener, and Whisperwood Elemental.
  • Role peers: Birds of Paradise fixes any color; Deathrite Shaman needs graveyard targets for mana; Bloom Tender scales with colored permanents.
  • Failure modes: treating it as blue or black fixing, or attacking with it when the mana is needed for face-up costs.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in openers; fragile against sweepers and pingers.
  • Low-skill guidance: tap it for green setup and keep it back unless attacking is clearly free.

Birds of Paradise

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, one-mana any-color fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: fixes UBG for Kadena and interaction while accelerating into turn-two engines or turn-three commander lines.
  • Timing: cast turn one whenever possible; protect its mana role if your hand lacks another blue, black, or green source.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {G}; outputs one mana of any color and has flying but zero power.
  • Partners / packages: enables Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Counterspell plus another blue source, Demonic Tutor, Toxic Deluge, and Assassin's Trophy.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet fixes commander colors from artifact mana; Fellwar Stone depends on opponents; Bloom Tender can produce multiple colors after colored permanents.
  • Failure modes: counting it as a combat threat, or losing it before the hand has stable colors.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: vital versus fast pods where Kadena must arrive early; vulnerable to creature removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Birds for missing colors before using it for generic mana.

Bloom Tender

  • Deck role: main 1 premium mana resource, colored-permanent scaler.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for one mana of each color among permanents you control, becoming UBG with Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer and scaling with colored permanents such as Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, and Rhystic Study.
  • Timing: cast early when you can untap with colored permanents; protect if it is the only path to multiple colors.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{G}; outputs colored mana based on permanents you control, while face-down colorless creatures add no colors.
  • Partners / packages: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer turns it into UBG; Seedborn Muse untaps it each opponent turn.
  • Role peers: Birds of Paradise fixes immediately for one color; Arcane Signet fixes one commander color; Sol Ring gives colorless speed.
  • Failure modes: assuming it taps for colors not represented by permanents, or counting hidden face-down creatures as colored.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong when Kadena survives; weak to cheap removal before it taps.
  • Low-skill guidance: check your colored permanents before deciding what Bloom Tender can produce.

Deathrite Shaman

  • Deck role: main 1 utility mana creature, graveyard resource converter.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; hate piece; reach/finisher; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: exiles target land card from a graveyard for any-color mana, exiles target instant or sorcery card with {B} to make each opponent lose 2 life, or exiles target creature card with {G} to gain 2 life.
  • Timing: best early with fetchlands in graveyards; hold activations when graveyard denial matters more than immediate mana or life.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes a graveyard card plus tap; outputs any-color mana, each-opponent life loss, or your life gain depending on target card type and paid mana.
  • Mode map: land-card mode fixes mana; instant/sorcery mode pressures all opponents; creature-card mode stabilizes life.
  • Partners / packages: your fetchlands Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Fabled Passage, and Prismatic Vista help fuel mana mode.
  • Role peers: Elvish Mystic is reliable green only; Birds of Paradise fixes without graveyard targets; sideboard Endurance is larger graveyard interaction.
  • Failure modes: keeping a one-land hand relying on Deathrite without any land cards in graveyards.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus graveyard decks and fetch-heavy pods; weak in empty-graveyard starts.
  • Low-skill guidance: use land cards for mana first, but exile key graveyard cards before opponents can pay escape, flashback, or reanimation costs.

Sol Ring

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, artifact colorless ramp.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: accelerates colorless and generic costs for face-down casts, artifacts, signet activation costs, Ugin, the Ineffable, and expensive morph reveal costs.
  • Timing: cast as early as possible unless a colored one-mana play is essential and mana sequencing cannot support both.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}; outputs {C}{C}, which pays generic/colorless costs but not Kadena's UBG colored requirements.
  • Partners / packages: helps cast Dream Chisel, Scroll of Fate, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Ugin's Mastery, and face-down creature spells.
  • Role peers: Fellwar Stone may produce colors; Arcane Signet produces commander colors; signets convert generic mana into color pairs.
  • Failure modes: keeping colorless-only hands that cannot cast Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer or colored interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: very strong in openers; weakened by sideboard Collector Ouphe.
  • Low-skill guidance: Sol Ring is speed, not color fixing; still find green, blue, and black.

Arcane Signet

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, artifact commander-color fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for one mana of any color in Kadena's Sultai color identity, covering blue for Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer and Counterspell, black for Demonic Tutor and Toxic Deluge, or green for Assassin's Trophy and morph support.
  • Timing: cast on turn two or off Sol Ring when the next turn needs Kadena mana, double-blue stack interaction, black tutor/removal mana, or green face-down support.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}; outputs one blue, black, or green mana per tap according to the commander's color identity.
  • Partners / packages: fixes Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Counterspell with another blue source, Demonic Tutor, Toxic Deluge, Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, and face-up costs for Willbender, Stratus Dancer, Bane of the Living, and Ainok Survivalist.
  • Role peers: Fellwar Stone depends on opponents' lands; Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, and Golgari Signet require {1} to activate but make exact two-color pairs.
  • Failure modes: sideboard Collector Ouphe stops artifact activated abilities, including Arcane Signet's mana ability, so board or sequence it carefully when relying on Sol Ring, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, or Golgari Signet.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: keep it for color stability against fair decks; trim only when a postboard Collector Ouphe plan or visible artifact hate makes signet mana unreliable.
  • Low-skill guidance: tap Arcane Signet for the missing Kadena color first, then preserve colored lands for Counterspell, Demonic Tutor, Toxic Deluge, or morph reveal costs.

Simic Signet

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, artifact GU fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: converts {1} and tap into {G}{U}, supporting green setup plus blue stack interaction and Kadena colors.
  • Timing: cast early when it completes a green-blue base or when Sol Ring can pay the activation input.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2} to cast and {1} per activation; outputs {G}{U}.
  • Partners / packages: helps pay for Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Secret Plans, Icefeather Aven, Counterspell with another blue, and green morph reveal costs.
  • Role peers: Golgari Signet covers B/G; Dimir Signet covers U/B; Arcane Signet gives one flexible color without activation input.
  • Failure modes: tapping all lands before leaving {1} to activate, or counting it as black access.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: important when blue interaction and green development must coexist; stopped by sideboard Collector Ouphe.
  • Low-skill guidance: leave one mana available if you plan to use the signet that turn.

Dimir Signet

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, artifact UB fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: converts {1} and tap into {U}{B}, supporting counters, tutors, removal, and Kadena's blue-black costs.
  • Timing: play early when hand has green already but needs blue/black density, or when Sol Ring makes activation easy.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2} to cast and {1} per activation; outputs {U}{B}.
  • Partners / packages: casts Counterspell with another blue, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Toxic Deluge, Putrefy with green, and Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer.
  • Role peers: Simic Signet covers G/U; Golgari Signet covers B/G; Arcane Signet is one-color flexible.
  • Failure modes: assuming it produces green or forgetting the {1} activation input.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: stronger in control/combo games where blue-black interaction matters.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Dimir Signet for blue and black, then make sure a green source remains for Kadena.

Golgari Signet

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, artifact BG fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: converts {1} and tap into {B}{G}, supporting black tutors/removal plus green ramp and face-up costs.
  • Timing: cast early when blue is already covered or when black-green spells define the hand.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2} to cast and {1} per activation; outputs {B}{G}.
  • Partners / packages: pays for Assassin's Trophy, Putrefy, Demonic Tutor plus green setup, Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer with blue source, and Bane of the Living black costs.
  • Role peers: Dimir Signet covers U/B; Simic Signet covers G/U; Arcane Signet fixes any one commander color.
  • Failure modes: keeping hands with Golgari Signet but no blue source for Kadena or counters.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: valuable versus creature decks where black removal and green development both matter.
  • Low-skill guidance: this gives black and green only; find blue separately.

Fellwar Stone

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, opponent-dependent artifact fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for one mana of any color that a land an opponent controls could produce, potentially fixing UBG but only if the current table provides those colors.
  • Timing: cast early, then verify the legal colors before planning Kadena, Counterspell, or Assassin's Trophy.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}; outputs one opponent-land-dependent color.
  • Partners / packages: helps cast Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Rhystic Study, Demonic Tutor, or Trail of Mystery only when opponents' lands supply the right color.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet is reliable U/B/G; signets give fixed pairs with activation input; Birds of Paradise fixes any color from creature mana.
  • Failure modes: assuming it produces a missing color before the rules engine shows opponent land outputs.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest in multiplayer pods with diverse colors; unreliable in color-skewed pods.
  • Low-skill guidance: check Fellwar Stone's available mana before choosing a line.

Lightning Greaves

  • Deck role: main 1 protection equipment, commander and engine haste/shroud tool.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: gives equipped creature haste and shroud, usually protecting Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Seedborn Muse, Beast Whisperer, or a closing threat from targeted spells and abilities.
  • Timing: cast before Kadena when possible; equip for {0} after the key creature resolves, but move it carefully before using your own targeted effects.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}; equip costs {0}; outputs haste and shroud, which prevents all targeting by any player including you.
  • Partners / packages: protects Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Seedborn Muse, Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, and The Cyber-Controller.
  • Role peers: Swiftfoot Boots gives hexproof and haste but costs {1} to equip; Heroic Intervention protects all permanents for a turn; Veil of Summer protects from blue/black.
  • Failure modes: shrouding a creature you still need to target with equip, bounce, or another ability.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against spot removal; weak against sweepers, sacrifice, and non-targeted -X/-X.
  • Low-skill guidance: equip Kadena after she resolves, but remember shroud blocks your own targeting too.

Swiftfoot Boots

  • Deck role: main 1 protection equipment, commander and payoff haste/hexproof tool.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: gives equipped creature hexproof and haste, letting Kadena or a key creature act sooner while blocking opponents' targeted spells and abilities.
  • Timing: cast before or alongside Kadena when equip mana is available; equip only as a sorcery.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}; equip costs {1}; outputs haste and hexproof from opponents, while your own spells and abilities may still target the creature.
  • Partners / packages: protects Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Seedborn Muse, Beast Whisperer, Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, and The Cyber-Controller.
  • Role peers: Lightning Greaves equips for {0} but gives shroud; Heroic Intervention and Veil of Summer handle broader one-turn windows.
  • Failure modes: leaving no {1} to equip, or expecting hexproof to stop sweepers and sacrifice effects.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus targeted removal and tempo bounce; weak versus Toxic Deluge-style global effects.
  • Low-skill guidance: keep one extra mana ready if Boots is meant to protect Kadena this turn.

Heroic Intervention

  • Deck role: main 1 plus sideboard 1 protection card, board-preservation tool.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; sideboard bullet; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: gives permanents you control hexproof and indestructible until end of turn, protecting Kadena, face-down boards, engines, artifacts, enchantments, and lands from many targeted or destroy effects.
  • Timing: hold for sweepers, targeted removal that matters, or a lethal combat blowout; use the sideboard copy when destroy-based resets or permanent removal are central to the matchup.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{G}; outputs one-turn hexproof and indestructible for your permanents.
  • Partners / packages: protects Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Scroll of Fate, Seedborn Muse, and wide face-down boards.
  • Role peers: Veil of Summer protects from blue/black and counters; Counterspell and Swan Song stop spells on the stack; Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots protect one creature.
  • Failure modes: expecting it to stop exile, bounce, sacrifice, or -X/-X effects like Toxic Deluge.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: board in the extra copy versus sweepers and removal-heavy decks, not against stack-only combo with no destroy pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast it when losing multiple important permanents would break the game plan.

Veil of Summer

  • Deck role: main 1 plus sideboard 1 protection/cantrip, anti-blue/black interaction.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; interaction-stack; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: if an opponent has cast a blue or black spell this turn, draw a card; your spells can't be countered this turn, and you plus permanents you control gain hexproof from blue and black until end of turn.
  • Timing: cast in response to blue/black targeting, during a counter fight over Kadena or an engine, or before a decisive spell when blue permission is expected.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {G}; outputs counter-proofing, blue/black hexproof, and conditional card draw.
  • Partners / packages: protects Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Demonic Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Secret Plans, Seedborn Muse, and face-up payoff turns.
  • Role peers: Heroic Intervention protects permanents broadly for a turn; Counterspell, Swan Song, and sideboard Negate interact on the stack.
  • Failure modes: casting it against nonblue/nonblack effects, expecting it to stop sweepers that do not target, or assuming card draw without an opponent's blue/black spell this turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: add the sideboard copy versus blue/black control, discard, and targeted removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it for blue or black stack fights; do not spend it on red, white, green, or colorless threats.

Counterspell

  • Deck role: main 1 interaction, hard permission.
  • Role type: interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target spell on the stack, protecting Kadena engines or stopping an opponent's decisive spell before it resolves.
  • Timing: keep {U}{U} open when opponents threaten sweepers, combo spells, commander removal, or engine-breaking permanents on the stack.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}{U}; outputs one countered target spell.
  • Partners / packages: protects Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Primordial Mist, Seedborn Muse, Guardian Project, Secret Plans, and lethal face-down boards.
  • Role peers: Swan Song is cheaper but narrower; Stratus Dancer hides instant/sorcery permission; Kheru Spellsnatcher is expensive but can steal the spell; sideboard Negate hits noncreature spells only.
  • Failure modes: trying to answer a resolved permanent, or countering low-impact bait while a sweeper remains likely.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest versus combo and control; less important when battlefield creature pressure must be answered by Toxic Deluge, Reality Shift, or Putrefy.
  • Low-skill guidance: counter the spell that would kill Kadena, wipe your board, or win the game.

Swan Song

  • Deck role: main 1 cheap permission, narrow stack protection.
  • Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target enchantment, instant, or sorcery spell, then its controller creates a 2/2 blue Bird creature token with flying.
  • Timing: use on sweepers, removal, combo instants/sorceries, or enchantment engines that matter more than the Bird token.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}; outputs one narrow counter and gives the spell's controller a flying 2/2 Bird.
  • Partners / packages: protects Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Guardian Project, and wide hidden boards from noncreature spell answers.
  • Role peers: Counterspell hits any spell for {U}{U}; Stratus Dancer counters instant or sorcery only; sideboard Negate counters noncreature spells but costs {1}{U}.
  • Failure modes: trying to counter artifact, creature, or planeswalker spells, or giving a Bird when flyer pressure already threatens you.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus combo/control and enchantment engines; weaker versus creature swarms.
  • Low-skill guidance: check the spell type before casting; Swan Song cannot hit creatures or artifacts.

Cyclonic Rift

  • Deck role: main 1 tempo reset, single-target or overload bounce.
  • Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; interaction-sweeper.
  • Deck-specific job: returns target nonland permanent you don't control to its owner's hand, or with overload returns each nonland permanent you don't control to its owner's hand.
  • Timing: normal cast for urgent commander, hate piece, or blocker problems; overload for lethal setup, survival, or a table reset that leaves your board intact.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U} normally or {6}{U} overloaded; outputs bounce, not destruction.
  • Mode map: normal mode targets one nonland permanent you don't control; overload changes target to each, so it affects all nonland permanents you don't control and does not target.
  • Partners / packages: clears blockers for Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, and wide face-down boards; protects engines by resetting opposing hate.
  • Role peers: Otawara, Soaring City bounces one artifact, creature, enchantment, or planeswalker; Thousand Winds bounces tapped creatures; Beast Within destroys any permanent.
  • Failure modes: bouncing a value permanent that re-enters profitably, or holding overload too long under lethal pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against go-wide, stax, and planeswalker boards; weaker against instant-speed combo if you tap out.
  • Low-skill guidance: use single-target when one permanent is killing you; save overload for a decisive reset or lethal attack.

Beast Within

  • Deck role: main 1 broad removal spell, universal permanent answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target permanent and gives that permanent's controller a 3/3 green Beast creature token, letting the deck answer almost any permanent type at instant speed.
  • Timing: save for permanents that beat face-down development: combo pieces, commanders, planeswalkers, hate permanents, or lethal threats.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{G}; outputs destruction and a 3/3 Beast for the controller.
  • Partners / packages: covers targets Putrefy, Reality Shift, and Swan Song cannot; can be copied by Mischievous Quanar when two permanent answers are needed.
  • Role peers: Assassin's Trophy hits opponent permanents and gives a basic search; Boseiju, Who Endures channels against artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land; Cyclonic Rift bounces instead of destroying.
  • Failure modes: creating a 3/3 that threatens your life total when the destroyed permanent was not important.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus resolved problem permanents; weak when the opponent's threat is a spell still on the stack.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not spend it on a small creature unless that creature is about to win or stop your engine.

Assassin's Trophy

  • Deck role: main 1 broad removal spell, opponent-permanent answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target permanent an opponent controls, then that permanent's controller may search for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield.
  • Timing: use on must-answer permanents where giving a basic land is less dangerous than letting the permanent stay.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {B}{G}; outputs destruction of an opponent-controlled permanent and possible opponent ramp.
  • Partners / packages: complements Beast Within, Putrefy, Reality Shift, Boseiju, Who Endures, and Cyclonic Rift.
  • Role peers: Beast Within can target any permanent including yours but gives a 3/3; Putrefy is limited to artifact or creature; Boseiju, Who Endures is limited to artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land.
  • Failure modes: using it on a low-impact permanent early and ramping an opponent into a stronger turn.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus commanders, combo permanents, planeswalkers, and hate pieces; weaker versus basic-light decks only because the drawback may fail less often, not because the target changes.
  • Low-skill guidance: Trophy the permanent that will beat you, not the first permanent you can legally target.

Reality Shift

  • Deck role: main 1 exile creature removal, manifest drawback answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: exiles target creature, then that creature's controller manifests the top card of their library.
  • Timing: use on commanders, indestructible creatures, combo creatures, or threats that must leave permanently enough to justify giving a face-down 2/2.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U}; outputs exile of one creature and a manifested 2/2 for that creature's controller.
  • Partners / packages: answers threats that Putrefy cannot cleanly handle; can be copied by Mischievous Quanar if multiple creatures must be exiled.
  • Role peers: Putrefy destroys artifact or creature and prevents regeneration; Silumgar Assassin and Aphetto Exterminator are hidden creature-removal morphs; Toxic Deluge sweeps.
  • Failure modes: giving an opponent a manifest that may become a real creature when the original target was not important.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against indestructible and graveyard-recursive creatures; weaker against decks that exploit manifests or face-down synergies.
  • Low-skill guidance: exile the creature that matters most, and remember the opponent gets a face-down creature.

Putrefy

  • Deck role: main 1 removal spell, artifact or creature answer.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target artifact or creature and prevents regeneration, giving the deck clean instant-speed coverage for creature threats and artifact engines.
  • Timing: hold for creatures that beat face-down combat or artifacts that drive an opponent's engine.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{B}{G}; outputs destruction of one target artifact or creature.
  • Partners / packages: complements exact removal cards Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Reality Shift, Boseiju, Who Endures, Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Krosan Grip, and Force of Vigor.
  • Role peers: Reality Shift exiles creatures but gives manifest; Beast Within hits any permanent but gives a 3/3; Krosan Grip and Force of Vigor are sideboard artifact/enchantment answers.
  • Failure modes: trying to hit enchantments, planeswalkers, or land permanents, or spending it on a creature that a face-down blocker could profitably handle.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus creature-artifact decks; weaker versus enchantment prison and spell combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Putrefy on artifact or creature only; save broader answers for other permanent types.

Toxic Deluge

  • Deck role: main 1 sweeper, life-paid creature reset.
  • Role type: interaction-sweeper; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: as an additional cost, pays X life so all creatures get -X/-X until end of turn, clearing boards through indestructible if toughness is reduced to zero or less.
  • Timing: cast when survival, board parity, or a future Kadena rebuild is worth the life and creature losses.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{B} plus X life; outputs a global -X/-X effect that hits Kadena, face-down creatures, and opponents' creatures.
  • Partners / packages: Grim Haruspex can draw from other nontoken creatures dying; Yedora, Grave Gardener can turn other dying nontoken creatures into face-down Forest lands.
  • Role peers: Bane of the Living gives -X/-X from a morph reveal; Ixidron turns nontoken creatures face down; Cyclonic Rift can reset opposing nonland permanents without killing yours.
  • Failure modes: paying too much life against burn or wiping your own engine when Reality Shift or Putrefy would suffice.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: essential versus go-wide creature decks; poor versus noncreature combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose X from actual toughness and your life total, not from maximum mana.

Demonic Tutor

  • Deck role: main 1 unrestricted tutor, high-priority selection spell.
  • Role type: tutor/search; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: searches your library for any card, puts it into your hand, then shuffles, finding the exact missing role for the visible game.
  • Timing: cast when the chosen card affects this turn or next turn; avoid speculative tutoring while a lethal threat is already visible.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{B}; outputs any one card to hand.
  • Partners / packages: engine targets include Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Primordial Mist, Seedborn Muse, Guardian Project; protection targets include Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer; answers include Cyclonic Rift, Toxic Deluge, Assassin's Trophy, Reality Shift.
  • Role peers: Vampiric Tutor is instant but topdeck and costs 2 life; Worldly Tutor finds only creature cards; Green Sun's Zenith puts a green creature onto the battlefield.
  • Failure modes: defaulting to a finisher while a removal, mana, or protection card is required.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: versus combo find Counterspell, Swan Song, Thoughtseize, Negate, or Opposition Agent if present post-sideboard; versus creatures find Toxic Deluge, Bane of the Living, or Ixidron.
  • Low-skill guidance: tutor for the card that solves the current problem, not the flashiest card.

Vampiric Tutor

  • Deck role: main 1 instant topdeck tutor, flexible but life-costly selection.
  • Role type: tutor/search; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: searches for any card, shuffles, puts that card on top, and you lose 2 life.
  • Timing: cast before your draw step, before a Kadena draw trigger, or before a draw engine trigger when you can immediately access the chosen card.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {B} and 2 life; outputs a chosen card on top of library, not directly in hand.
  • Partners / packages: sets up Toxic Deluge, Cyclonic Rift, Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Seedborn Muse, Primordial Mist, or Demonic Tutor depending on the visible need.
  • Role peers: Demonic Tutor puts the card into hand at sorcery speed; Worldly Tutor topdecks only creatures; Fact or Fiction gives selection without a chosen card.
  • Failure modes: tutoring before cracking Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Fabled Passage, or Prismatic Vista, which shuffles away the chosen card.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in stack windows and end steps; risky when life total is pressured.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast it when your next draw is controlled and you know the exact card needed.

Worldly Tutor

  • Deck role: main 1 instant creature tutor, topdeck setup.
  • Role type: tutor/search; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: searches for a creature card, reveals it, shuffles, and puts it on top of your library.

  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {G}; outputs one revealed creature card on top of library.
  • Partners / packages: engine targets include Seedborn Muse, Beast Whisperer, Whisperwood Elemental, Yedora, Grave Gardener; interaction targets include Willbender, Stratus Dancer, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Bane of the Living, Ixidron, Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante.
  • Role peers: Green Sun's Zenith puts a green creature directly onto the battlefield; Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor find any card.
  • Failure modes: topdecking a creature before an unavoidable shuffle effect, or choosing a threat when a creature answer is required.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong when a single creature solves the board; weaker when you need Cyclonic Rift, Counterspell, or Heroic Intervention.
  • Low-skill guidance: pick the exact creature that solves the current job: Seedborn Muse for mana, Beast Whisperer for cards, Bane of the Living for a sweeper, or Willbender for target protection.

Green Sun's Zenith

  • Deck role: main 1 green creature tutor, battlefield deployment spell.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: searches for a green creature card with mana value X or less, puts it onto the battlefield, then shuffles Green Sun's Zenith into its owner's library.
  • Timing: early X=1 for Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, or Deathrite Shaman; later for Seedborn Muse, Whisperwood Elemental, Yedora, Grave Gardener, Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, or Sagu Mauler when they solve the board.

  • Role peers: Worldly Tutor finds any creature to topdeck; Demonic Tutor finds any card to hand.
  • Failure modes: choosing Hooded Hydra casually, because entering without a chosen X can make it a poor battlefield target.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong for ramp starts and creature silver bullets; weak under Grafdigger's Cage.
  • Low-skill guidance: set X to the creature's mana value and choose the creature that fixes mana or solves the board.

Fact or Fiction

  • Deck role: main 1 instant card selection, refill spell.
  • Role type: card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: reveals the top five cards, an opponent separates them into two piles, and you choose one pile for hand while the other goes to graveyard.
  • Timing: cast at an opponent's end step when you can still hold interaction, or when digging for a land, protection, or answer is urgent.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{U}; outputs one chosen pile to hand and puts the other pile into graveyard for Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, or Takenuma, Abandoned Mire context.
  • Partners / packages: looks for Counterspell, Swan Song, Heroic Intervention, Cyclonic Rift, Toxic Deluge, Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, and face-down creatures.
  • Role peers: Rhystic Study and Mystic Remora draw over time; Demonic Tutor finds one exact card; Vampiric Tutor topdecks one exact card.
  • Failure modes: choosing raw card count over the only pile containing a needed answer.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in slower games and control mirrors; risky if four mana should remain open for a known stack fight.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the pile that gives mana plus the answer or engine you need now.

Rhystic Study

  • Deck role: main 1 tax draw engine, opponent-spell pressure.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: whenever an opponent casts a spell, you may draw unless that player pays {1}, refilling the hidden-board plan.
  • Timing: cast early when opponents are likely to cast multiple spells before removing it; delay if tapping out loses Kadena or a needed answer.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{U}; outputs conditional cards based on opponent payment choices.
  • Partners / packages: feeds Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer face-down chains, finds Counterspell, Swan Song, Heroic Intervention, and keeps land drops flowing.
  • Role peers: Mystic Remora taxes noncreature spells by {4} with cumulative upkeep; Guardian Project and Beast Whisperer draw from your creatures.
  • Failure modes: fighting over low-impact spells before seeing whether Study draws, or keeping a hand that relies only on Study surviving.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in multiplayer and spell-heavy pods; weaker against creature decks that can pressure life instead of paying.
  • Low-skill guidance: play it early if safe, then let opponents decide payments before spending counters.

Mystic Remora

  • Deck role: main 1 cheap tax draw engine, noncreature-spell punisher.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: draws unless an opponent pays {4} whenever they cast a noncreature spell, but cumulative upkeep {1} increases each upkeep.
  • Timing: cast early against spell-heavy pods; pay upkeep only while expected cards are worth tying up mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {U}; upkeep consumes increasing generic mana; outputs conditional draws from opponents' noncreature spells.
  • Partners / packages: draws into Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Counterspell, Swan Song, Veil of Summer, and face-down creatures.
  • Role peers: Rhystic Study taxes all spells by {1} without upkeep; Fact or Fiction gives one instant burst.
  • Failure modes: paying cumulative upkeep when it prevents Kadena recast, face-up interaction, or survival removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus combo/control and artifact-ramp spell turns; weak versus creature-heavy attacks.
  • Low-skill guidance: let it go when upkeep mana would stop your real turn.

Whisperwood Elemental

  • Deck role: main 1 manifest engine, sweeper-insurance creature.
  • Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: manifests the top card of your library at your end step and can sacrifice itself so face-up nontoken creatures you control gain a death trigger that manifests the top card.
  • Timing: cast when you expect to reach end step or need protection against destroy sweepers; sacrifice before the wipe if face-up nontoken creatures are about to die.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {3}{G}{G}; outputs end-step face-down creatures and one-turn manifest insurance through sacrifice.
  • Partners / packages: triggers Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer on manifest entries; works with Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, and Guardian Project where legal.
  • Role peers: Primordial Mist manifests every end step from enchantment; Scroll of Fate manifests from hand; Yedora, Grave Gardener turns deaths into Forest lands instead.
  • Failure modes: sacrificing too late, expecting the granted death trigger on face-down creatures, or relying on manifest identity without support.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus removal-heavy and attrition decks; slow versus fast combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: if a sweeper is coming, sacrifice Whisperwood before your face-up nontoken creatures die.

Command Tower

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, commander-color nonbasic land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for U, B, or G because Kadena's color identity is Sultai.

  • Inputs / outputs: consumes the land play; outputs one mana of any Kadena color.
  • Partners / packages: fixes Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Assassin's Trophy, Secret Plans, Counterspell, and Toxic Deluge.

  • Low-skill guidance: play it early when your hand needs multiple colors.

Exotic Orchard

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, opponent-dependent nonbasic fixer.

  • Timing: play early but verify available colors before planning Kadena or double-blue interaction.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes the land play; outputs one opponent-land-dependent color.
  • Partners / packages: can cast Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Counterspell, Demonic Tutor, or Trail of Mystery only when opponents' lands permit the needed color.

  • Failure modes: assuming it taps for a color no opponent land can produce.

  • Inputs / outputs: consumes tapped land tempo; outputs commander-color mana and possible scry.
  • Partners / packages: scry applies when casting Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Hooded Hydra, Willbender, Grim Haruspex, or Aphetto Exterminator; face-down spells have no creature types for this purpose.

  • Inputs / outputs: consumes tapped land tempo; outputs U/B/G mana, fetchable type coverage, or one card through cycling.

  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: pays 1 life, taps, and sacrifices to find a Plains or Swamp card; in this deck the relevant registered targets are Swamp-type cards only.
  • Timing: use for black access, or for blue/green access through Swamp-type duals and triome when legal.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land, 1 life, and sacrifice; outputs one legal Swamp-type target.
  • Partners / packages: finds Zagoth Triome, Watery Grave, Overgrown Tomb, Underground Sea, Bayou, or Swamp.
  • Role peers: Polluted Delta finds Island/Swamp; Verdant Catacombs finds Swamp/Forest; Windswept Heath is the comparable off-color fetch for Forest.
  • Failure modes: claiming Plains access when this registered list has no Plains card.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong when black is the missing color for tutors or sweepers.
  • Low-skill guidance: treat this as a Swamp fetch in this deck.

Fabled Passage

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, basic-land search utility.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps and sacrifices to search for basic Island, Swamp, or Forest, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then untaps that land if you control four or more lands.
  • Timing: use early to fix missing colors or after four lands when the basic can enter untapped.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land and sacrifice; outputs one basic, usually tapped before the four-land clause.
  • Partners / packages: finds Island, Swamp, or Forest; puts land cards into graveyard for Deathrite Shaman.
  • Role peers: Prismatic Vista pays 1 life for a basic that enters untapped; Sakura-Tribe Elder finds a basic tapped from a creature slot.
  • Failure modes: searching nonbasics or expecting untapped mana before controlling four or more lands.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: stable fixing with no life payment, helpful versus burn.
  • Low-skill guidance: get the missing basic color; remember it usually enters tapped early.

Prismatic Vista

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, basic fetchland.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps, pays 1 life, and sacrifices to search for basic Island, Swamp, or Forest and put it onto the battlefield.
  • Timing: use when a basic color is missing and the untapped basic matters this turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land, 1 life, and sacrifice; outputs one registered basic.
  • Partners / packages: finds Island, Swamp, or Forest; fuels Deathrite Shaman by putting a land card into graveyard.
  • Role peers: Fabled Passage has no life payment but usually enters tapped early; Sakura-Tribe Elder finds basics tapped.
  • Failure modes: searching for nonbasic duals or paying life when Fabled Passage timing would be enough.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good versus color pressure; life cost matters versus burn.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the basic that completes your next spell.

Hinterland Harbor

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, conditional GU nonbasic.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters untapped if you control a Forest or Island and taps for {G} or {U}.
  • Timing: play after Zagoth Triome, Breeding Pool, Tropical Island, Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Overgrown Tomb, Bayou, Island, or Forest when those types satisfy the condition.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play; outputs green or blue if available, with tapped-entry risk.
  • Partners / packages: supports Secret Plans, Counterspell with another blue, Elvish Mystic, and Kadena's G/U costs.
  • Role peers: Dreamroot Cascade checks two or more other lands; Rejuvenating Springs checks opponent count; Breeding Pool has Forest Island types.
  • Failure modes: playing it turn one tapped when an untapped green source was needed.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong after typed lands; awkward in one-land hands.
  • Low-skill guidance: check whether you already control Forest or Island before relying on untapped mana.

Drowned Catacomb

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, conditional UB nonbasic.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters untapped if you control an Island or Swamp and taps for {U} or {B}.
  • Timing: play after Zagoth Triome, Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Breeding Pool, Tropical Island, Overgrown Tomb, Bayou, Island, or Swamp when those types satisfy the condition.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play; outputs blue or black, with tapped-entry risk.
  • Partners / packages: supports Counterspell, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Toxic Deluge, and Kadena's U/B costs.
  • Role peers: Shipwreck Marsh checks two other lands; Morphic Pool checks opponent count; Watery Grave has Island Swamp types.
  • Failure modes: keeping it as your only early land for a one-mana green play.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong for U/B interaction once a typed land is present.
  • Low-skill guidance: it needs Island or Swamp already in play to be untapped.

Woodland Cemetery

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, conditional BG nonbasic.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters untapped if you control a Swamp or Forest and taps for {B} or {G}.
  • Timing: play after Zagoth Triome, Overgrown Tomb, Bayou, Watery Grave, Underground Sea, Breeding Pool, Tropical Island, Swamp, or Forest when those types satisfy the condition.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play; outputs black or green, with tapped-entry risk.
  • Partners / packages: casts Elvish Mystic, Trail of Mystery, Demonic Tutor, Assassin's Trophy, and Kadena's B/G costs.
  • Role peers: Deathcap Glade checks two other lands; Undergrowth Stadium checks opponent count; Overgrown Tomb has Swamp Forest types.
  • Failure modes: treating it as blue access or assuming untapped entry without a Swamp/Forest.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong for ramp plus removal starts.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it for black/green and plan a blue source separately.

Dreamroot Cascade

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, slow GU nonbasic.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters untapped if you control two or more other lands and taps for {G} or {U}.
  • Timing: stronger from turn three onward; early tapped entry is acceptable only if no one-mana acceleration or blue interaction is required.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play; outputs green or blue.
  • Partners / packages: supports Secret Plans, Counterspell with another blue, Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, and Kadena's G/U costs.
  • Role peers: Hinterland Harbor checks Forest/Island; Rejuvenating Springs checks opponent count; Breeding Pool can enter untapped for life.
  • Failure modes: relying on it as an untapped turn-one or turn-two source without two other lands.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: solid midgame fixing; slow in fast openers.
  • Low-skill guidance: play it later if you need untapped mana.

Shipwreck Marsh

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, slow UB nonbasic.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters untapped if you control two or more other lands and taps for {U} or {B}.
  • Timing: use midgame for counters, tutors, and removal; early tapped entry can cost tempo.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play; outputs blue or black.
  • Partners / packages: supports Counterspell, Demonic Tutor, Toxic Deluge, Putrefy with green, and Kadena's U/B costs.
  • Role peers: Drowned Catacomb checks Island/Swamp; Morphic Pool checks opponent count; Watery Grave can enter untapped for life.
  • Failure modes: expecting it untapped before you control two other lands.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: reliable after setup; weak in one-land or two-land keeps.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not count it as early untapped interaction unless two other lands are already present.

Deathcap Glade

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, slow BG nonbasic.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters untapped if you control two or more other lands and taps for {B} or {G}.
  • Timing: best after early development; early tapped entry is acceptable only if the hand has no immediate green/black play.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play; outputs black or green.
  • Partners / packages: supports Assassin's Trophy, Putrefy, Demonic Tutor, Trail of Mystery, and Kadena's B/G costs.
  • Role peers: Woodland Cemetery checks Swamp/Forest; Undergrowth Stadium checks opponent count; Overgrown Tomb can enter untapped for life.
  • Failure modes: assuming it provides blue or enters untapped too early.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good midgame fixing for removal and green engines.
  • Low-skill guidance: count it as tapped until you already control two other lands.

Barkchannel Pathway

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, pathway choice between green and blue.
  • Role type: modal utility; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters as either Barkchannel Pathway for {G} or Tidechannel Pathway for {U}; the battlefield face choice fixes one color permanently for that land.
  • Timing: choose green when turn-one acceleration, Trail of Mystery, or green morph costs matter; choose blue when Swan Song, Counterspell, Rhystic Study, or Kadena's blue is missing.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play; outputs either green or blue, not both.
  • Mode map: Barkchannel face taps for {G}; Tidechannel face taps for {U}; choose based on hand shortage before playing it.
  • Partners / packages: supports Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, Secret Plans, Counterspell, and Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer.
  • Role peers: Clearwater Pathway chooses U/B; Darkbore Pathway chooses B/G.
  • Failure modes: choosing blue and then missing green acceleration, or choosing green and then failing to hold blue interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: important in openers with one missing color.
  • Low-skill guidance: pick the color you need for the next two turns.

Clearwater Pathway

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, pathway choice between blue and black.
  • Role type: modal utility; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters as Clearwater Pathway for {U} or Murkwater Pathway for {B}; the chosen face determines its color output.
  • Timing: choose blue for counters and Kadena's blue; choose black for tutors, Toxic Deluge, and Kadena's black.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play; outputs either blue or black, not both.
  • Mode map: Clearwater face taps for {U}; Murkwater face taps for {B}; the choice cannot be changed while on battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: supports Counterspell, Swan Song, Rhystic Study, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Toxic Deluge, and Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer.
  • Role peers: Barkchannel Pathway chooses G/U; Darkbore Pathway chooses B/G.
  • Failure modes: choosing black while the hand needs double blue, or choosing blue while black removal is urgent.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: blue face stronger versus combo/control; black face stronger versus creature boards and tutor needs.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the color your hand cannot otherwise make.

Darkbore Pathway

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, pathway choice between black and green.
  • Role type: modal utility; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters as Darkbore Pathway for {B} or Slitherbore Pathway for {G}; the chosen face provides only that color.
  • Timing: choose green for acceleration and face-down engines; choose black for tutors, removal, and sweepers.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play; outputs either black or green, not both.
  • Mode map: Darkbore face taps for {B}; Slitherbore face taps for {G}; choose before battlefield entry based on current color shortage.
  • Partners / packages: supports Elvish Mystic, Trail of Mystery, Demonic Tutor, Toxic Deluge, Assassin's Trophy, and Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer.
  • Role peers: Barkchannel Pathway chooses G/U; Clearwater Pathway chooses U/B.
  • Failure modes: missing blue for Kadena after choosing between black and green, or choosing the color already overrepresented.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: green face speeds setup; black face stabilizes with interaction.
  • Low-skill guidance: this never makes blue, so plan another source for Kadena.

Boseiju, Who Endures

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, legendary green source and channel interaction.
  • Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {G}, or channels for {1}{G} by discarding it to destroy target artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land an opponent controls; that player may search for a land card with a basic land type.
  • Timing: play as green mana if color-light; hold for channel when an artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land will beat your face-down engine.
  • Inputs / outputs: land mode outputs green; channel consumes discard and mana, with cost reduced by {1} for each legendary creature you control.
  • Mode map: mana mode is a legendary green land; channel mode is an uncounterable-by-normal-spell interaction ability, not a spell, and gives the opponent a typed-land search.
  • Partners / packages: cost reduction from Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Yedora, Grave Gardener, or The Cyber-Controller as legendary creatures.
  • Role peers: Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, sideboard Force of Vigor, and sideboard Krosan Grip.
  • Failure modes: holding it as a spell when missing green prevents Kadena.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against artifact/enchantment engines and utility lands.
  • Low-skill guidance: if you need green mana now, play it; if colors are stable, save it for a real target.

Otawara, Soaring City

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, legendary blue source and channel bounce.
  • Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {U}, or channels for {3}{U} by discarding it to return target artifact, creature, enchantment, or planeswalker to its owner's hand, with cost reduced by legendary creatures you control.
  • Timing: play as blue mana when needed for counters or Kadena; hold when a bounce answer can save tempo or clear a blocker/hate permanent.
  • Inputs / outputs: land mode outputs blue; channel consumes discard and mana, with {1} reduction per legendary creature you control.
  • Mode map: mana mode is a legendary blue land; channel mode bounces one legal artifact, creature, enchantment, or planeswalker and is not a spell.
  • Partners / packages: legendary cost reducers include Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Yedora, Grave Gardener, and The Cyber-Controller.
  • Role peers: Cyclonic Rift bounces nonland permanents you do not control; Icefeather Aven bounces another target creature; Thousand Winds bounces tapped creatures.
  • Failure modes: expecting it to hit lands, or holding it while blue mana is missing.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus commanders, stax permanents, and temporary blocker removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: use channel for the permanent that matters; otherwise play it for blue.

Takenuma, Abandoned Mire

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, legendary black source and channel recursion.
  • Role type: modal utility; recursion; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {B}, or channels for {3}{B} by discarding it to mill three cards, then return a creature or planeswalker card from your graveyard to your hand, with cost reduced by legendary creatures you control.
  • Timing: play as black mana when needed for tutors/removal; channel when a graveyard creature or Ugin, the Ineffable is worth recovering.
  • Inputs / outputs: land mode outputs black; channel consumes discard and mana, mills three, then returns a creature or planeswalker card.
  • Mode map: mana mode is a black legendary land; channel mode is self-mill plus recursion to hand and is not a spell.
  • Partners / packages: recovers Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer only if she is actually in graveyard, plus Seedborn Muse, Whisperwood Elemental, Bane of the Living, Den Protector, or Ugin, the Ineffable.
  • Role peers: Den Protector returns any card from graveyard; Deathmist Raptor returns itself to battlefield; Yedora, Grave Gardener converts deaths into Forests.
  • Failure modes: milling key cards while Grafdigger's Cage or graveyard hate constrains recursion, or holding it when black mana is needed.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in attrition; risky versus graveyard hate.
  • Low-skill guidance: play it for black unless there is a specific creature or planeswalker to recover.

Zoetic Cavern

  • Deck role: main 1 mana resource, colorless land with morph utility.
  • Role type: modal utility; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for {C}, or can be cast face down as a 2/2 creature for {3} and turned face up any time for morph {2}.
  • Timing: play as land when colored sources are stable but generic mana is needed; use face-down mode when hidden body count, Kadena draw, or Trail trigger is worth delaying a land resource.
  • Inputs / outputs: land mode outputs colorless mana; face-down mode consumes spell timing and morph mana but creates hidden pressure.
  • Mode map: land mode does not fix UBG; face-down spell mode can trigger Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Trail of Mystery, and Guardian Project; morph mode reveals it as a land.
  • Partners / packages: Secret Plans draws when it turns face up; Trail of Mystery pumps only if it is a creature after turning face up, so rules-engine output matters.
  • Role peers: no direct land peer; closest hidden-body overlap is Obscuring Aether turning itself face down.
  • Failure modes: keeping it as the only land in a colored hand, or assuming it taps for colored mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: useful in slow games with enough colors; poor in mana-constrained starts.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it as a colorless land unless colors are already solved.

Island

  • Deck role: main 1 basic mana resource, blue fetch/search target.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: supplies {U} for Counterspell, Swan Song, blue morph costs, Rhystic Study, Cyclonic Rift, and Kadena's blue requirement.
  • Timing: fetch or play when blue interaction matters or when check lands need Island support.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play or basic-search target; outputs blue mana.
  • Partners / packages: found by Fabled Passage, Prismatic Vista, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and Trail of Mystery; also legal for fetches that can find Island-type cards when searching basics is preferred.
  • Role peers: Swamp supplies black; Forest supplies green; Zagoth Triome, Breeding Pool, Watery Grave, Tropical Island, and Underground Sea supply blue with extra types/colors.
  • Failure modes: fetching Island when green is needed for acceleration or black for interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: important versus combo/control where blue stack interaction matters.
  • Low-skill guidance: get Island when you must hold blue spells.

Swamp

  • Deck role: main 1 basic mana resource, black fetch/search target.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: supplies {B} for Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Toxic Deluge, Bane of the Living, Putrefy, and Kadena's black requirement.
  • Timing: fetch or play when black interaction or tutoring is the bottleneck.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play or basic-search target; outputs black mana.
  • Partners / packages: found by Fabled Passage, Prismatic Vista, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and Trail of Mystery; supports check lands that care about Swamp.
  • Role peers: Island supplies blue; Forest supplies green; Zagoth Triome, Watery Grave, Overgrown Tomb, Underground Sea, and Bayou supply black with extra types/colors.
  • Failure modes: fetching Swamp when the hand cannot cast green acceleration or blue counters.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: important versus creature boards and tutor-heavy lines.
  • Low-skill guidance: get Swamp when you need black removal, tutors, or Kadena's black.

Forest

  • Deck role: main 1 basic mana resource, green fetch/search target.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: supplies {G} for Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, Trail of Mystery, Obscuring Aether, Heroic Intervention, Green Sun's Zenith, and Kadena's green requirement.
  • Timing: fetch or play early when one-mana acceleration or green setup is needed.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes land play or basic-search target; outputs green mana.
  • Partners / packages: found by Fabled Passage, Prismatic Vista, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and Trail of Mystery; supports Hinterland Harbor and Woodland Cemetery.
  • Role peers: Island supplies blue; Swamp supplies black; Zagoth Triome, Breeding Pool, Overgrown Tomb, Tropical Island, and Bayou supply green with extra types/colors.
  • Failure modes: overfetching green when double-blue Counterspell or black Toxic Deluge is urgent.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best basic in many openers because green starts acceleration.
  • Low-skill guidance: get Forest early when your hand contains green ramp or Green Sun's Zenith.

Force of Vigor

  • Deck role: sideboard 1 matchup card, free-speed artifact/enchantment answer.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys up to two target artifacts and/or enchantments, with an alternate cost of exiling a green card from your hand if it is not your turn.
  • Timing: bring in against artifact or enchantment engines where answering two permanents matters; cast for free on opponents' turns when mana must stay open for Kadena, counters, or morph reveals.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{G}{G}, or exiles a green card from hand off-turn; outputs destruction of up to two legal artifact/enchantment targets.
  • Mode map: normal cast uses mana; alternate cast uses a green card from hand only if it is not your turn.
  • Partners / packages: role peers in the main deck are Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Boseiju, Who Endures, Beast Within, and Assassin's Trophy.
  • Role peers: sideboard Krosan Grip is one target with split second; Collector Ouphe suppresses artifact activated abilities instead of destroying them.
  • Failure modes: exiling a green card that is essential to Kadena's engine, or boarding it where opponents have too few targets.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus artifact ramp, enchantment prison, and combo permanents.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it when two artifacts/enchantments matter more than the green card you exile.

Collector Ouphe

  • Deck role: sideboard 1 matchup card, artifact activated-ability hate creature.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece.
  • Deck-specific job: prevents activated abilities of artifacts from being activated, slowing opposing artifact mana or combo while also shutting off your own artifact activated abilities.
  • Timing: bring in only when opposing artifacts matter more than your artifact infrastructure.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{G}; outputs a static suppression effect on artifact activated abilities.
  • Partners / packages: conflicts with your Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Fellwar Stone, Lightning Greaves equip, Swiftfoot Boots equip, and Scroll of Fate; it does not stop Dream Chisel's static cost reduction.
  • Role peers: Force of Vigor and Krosan Grip remove artifacts/enchantments; Boseiju, Who Endures channels to destroy an artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land.
  • Failure modes: boarding it when your own mana rocks and equipment are more important than the opponent's artifacts.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against artifact-combo and artifact-ramp decks; weak against creature or spell decks without artifact activated abilities.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not bring it in if it hurts your Sol Ring, signets, Boots, Greaves, or Scroll more than the opponent.

Endurance

  • Deck role: sideboard 1 matchup card, flash graveyard interaction and reach blocker.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: with flash and reach, enters to make up to one target player put all cards from their graveyard on the bottom of their library in a random order; evoke exiles a green card from hand.
  • Timing: bring in against graveyard engines, reanimation, escape, flashback, delve, or mill pressure; use before graveyard costs are paid or recursion resolves.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{G}{G}, or evoke by exiling a green card from hand; outputs graveyard reset and a 3/4 reach body unless evoked and sacrificed.
  • Mode map: normal cast keeps the creature; evoke is a cheaper alternate cost that sacrifices Endurance after it enters.
  • Partners / packages: protects your library/graveyard plan while supplementing Deathrite Shaman and Grafdigger's Cage.
  • Role peers: Deathrite Shaman exiles one targeted card type at a time; Grafdigger's Cage prevents some graveyard/library access.
  • Failure modes: responding after flashback, delve, or escape costs have already been paid and expecting to undo the spell.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus graveyard combo and self-mill; useful versus flyers because of reach.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Endurance before the opponent spends the graveyard, not after the spell is already cast.

Grafdigger's Cage

  • Deck role: sideboard 1 matchup card, graveyard/library access hate artifact.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece.
  • Deck-specific job: stops creature cards in graveyards and libraries from entering the battlefield and stops players from casting spells from graveyards or libraries.
  • Timing: bring in when opponents rely on reanimation, graveyard casting, library casting, or creature-cheat effects more than your own deck does.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}; outputs a static restriction effect.
  • Partners / packages: conflicts with your Green Sun's Zenith, Deathmist Raptor, Yedora, Grave Gardener, The Cyber-Controller, and creature-card manifests from Primordial Mist, Whisperwood Elemental, or Ugin's Mastery when rules apply.
  • Role peers: Endurance resets graveyards once; Deathrite Shaman exiles selected graveyard cards; Thoughtseize and Negate can stop setup spells.
  • Failure modes: bringing it in when your own battlefield-from-library or battlefield-from-graveyard plan is the best route.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus graveyard recursion and library-cheat decks; weak versus fair creature pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it only when its hate text hurts the opponent more than your Green Sun's Zenith and recursion.

Thoughtseize

  • Deck role: sideboard 1 matchup card, proactive hand disruption.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-discard.
  • Deck-specific job: target player reveals their hand, you choose a nonland card from it, that player discards it, and you lose 2 life.
  • Timing: bring in against combo/control or sweeper-heavy opponents; cast before shields go up or before committing Kadena.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {B} and 2 life; outputs hand information and one chosen nonland discard.
  • Partners / packages: clears the way for Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Primordial Mist, Seedborn Muse, or a protected face-down turn; pairs with Negate, Veil of Summer, and Counterspell.
  • Role peers: Counterspell, Swan Song, and Negate answer spells on the stack; Opposition Agent punishes searches.
  • Failure modes: taking a low-impact card while the revealed hand contains a sweeper, combo payoff, or commander answer.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against fast combo and control; weak versus creature swarms and burn where 2 life matters.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the nonland card most likely to stop Kadena or win before you stabilize.

Negate

  • Deck role: sideboard 1 matchup card, noncreature stack interaction.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: counters target noncreature spell on the stack, covering sweepers, planeswalkers, artifacts, enchantments, instants, and sorceries before they resolve.
  • Timing: bring in against combo/control, sweepers, and noncreature engines; hold {1}{U} for the decisive spell.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{U}; outputs one countered noncreature spell.
  • Partners / packages: protects Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Secret Plans, Primordial Mist, Guardian Project, and wide face-down boards from noncreature answers.
  • Role peers: Counterspell hits any spell; Swan Song hits enchantment, instant, or sorcery and gives a Bird; Stratus Dancer hits instant or sorcery from face-down.
  • Failure modes: trying to counter creature spells or resolved permanents.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus planeswalker, spell-combo, and sweeper decks; weak versus creature-heavy pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: keep it for a noncreature spell on the stack that matters.

Krosan Grip

  • Deck role: sideboard 1 matchup card, split-second artifact/enchantment removal.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target artifact or enchantment, with split second preventing players from casting spells or activating nonmana abilities while it is on the stack.
  • Timing: bring in when a specific artifact or enchantment must die through protection, activation, or counterplay.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{G}; outputs destruction of one artifact or enchantment.
  • Partners / packages: complements Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Boseiju, Who Endures, Force of Vigor, Beast Within, and Assassin's Trophy.
  • Role peers: Force of Vigor can hit up to two targets and can be alternate-cast off-turn; Collector Ouphe suppresses activated abilities rather than removing permanents.
  • Failure modes: bringing it against creature combo or planeswalker pressure with few artifact/enchantment targets.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong versus prison pieces, combo artifacts, and enchantment engines.
  • Low-skill guidance: save it for the artifact or enchantment the opponent would otherwise protect or activate.

Opposition Agent

  • Deck role: sideboard 1 matchup card, flash search-punishment creature.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece; interaction-discard.
  • Deck-specific job: flashes in before an opponent searches, lets you control opponents while they search, exiles cards they find, and lets you play those cards with mana as though it were any color.
  • Timing: bring in against tutors, fetch-heavy plans, and search-based combo; cast in response to an actual search effect, not as a generic 3/2 unless pressure is the only need.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {2}{B}; outputs search control, exile of found cards, and possible future access to those cards.
  • Partners / packages: pairs with Thoughtseize, Negate, Counterspell, and Swan Song to fight combo/search turns.
  • Role peers: Ashiok-style effects are not in this deck; closest disruption is Thoughtseize for hand, Negate for noncreature spells, and Endurance for graveyard resources.
  • Failure modes: casting it after the search has resolved, or tapping out for it when a stack answer is required.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest versus tutor commanders, fetchland chains, and big-mana search spells.
  • Low-skill guidance: wait until the rules engine shows an opponent search before flashing it in.

Interaction Priorities

  • Priority: protect Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Scroll of Fate, Whisperwood Elemental, and Seedborn Muse before protecting generic face-down bodies; these cards turn legal face-down actions into cards, mana smoothing, hidden threats, or repeated end-step pressure.
  • Counter first: use Counterspell, Swan Song, Stratus Dancer, Kheru Spellsnatcher, and Mischievous Quanar on sweepers, exile-based removal, commander-stopping stack pieces, and combo commitments that beat a board of face-down permanents. Do not spend stack interaction on ordinary blockers or low-impact value spells while a face-down engine is active.
  • Remove first: use Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Putrefy, Reality Shift, Boseiju, Who Endures, or Otawara, Soaring City on permanents that stop activated or triggered face-up play, remove Kadena repeatedly, lock combat, or create an immediate lethal clock. Prefer Reality Shift or Ixidron when exiling or shrinking a creature matters more than preserving hidden bodies.
  • Bounce first: reserve Cyclonic Rift and Otawara, Soaring City for tempo windows that reopen attacks, save a key permanent from a sweeper, or break a board where removal one-for-ones cannot catch up. Do not bounce a harmless permanent merely to spend mana before deciding whether to morph, manifest, or hold interaction.
  • Sweep carefully: use Toxic Deluge, Bane of the Living, Ixidron, The Cyber-Controller, and Thousand Winds only when the visible board swing is worth exposing or killing your own face-down resources. Choose life payment, reveal timing, and bounce timing from current battlefield math, not from assumed hidden identities.
  • Redirect and punish: keep Willbender face down when opponents are likely to aim targeted removal, extra-turn interaction, or combat tricks at Kadena or a high-value engine. Turn it face up only if the legal target change shown by the engine creates a materially better target and does not fizzle your own required effect.
  • Protect selectively: use Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Lightning Greaves, and Swiftfoot Boots for Kadena, a lock/value engine, or a lethal-pressure creature; do not shield replaceable 2/2 face-down permanents unless losing them breaks the active plan.
  • Bait cards: lead with expendable face-down creatures, Dream Chisel, Obscuring Aether, or nonessential value permanents to draw removal before committing Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Primordial Mist, Seedborn Muse, or Whisperwood Elemental. Against blue decks, presenting a medium morph before the true engine can make later Stratus Dancer or Kheru Spellsnatcher more punishing.
  • Ignore when possible: let small attacks, slow value creatures, and non-lethal mana development resolve while your hand contains morphs and engines. This deck wins by compounding hidden threats, so one-for-one interaction should answer cards that beat face-down development, not every card that generates incremental value.
  • Archetype shift: against combo, become a stack-and-tutor deck with Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, counters, and disruptive morphs. Against creature swarms, become a board-control deck with Bane of the Living, Toxic Deluge, Ixidron, Thousand Winds, and oversized morphs. Against control, become a draw-engine deck that forces action on Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, Secret Plans, Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Rhystic Study, and Mystic Remora.

Combat And Trading Rules

  • Attack when hidden pressure is replaceable: send face-down creatures into tapped-down or low-blocker boards when combat damage pressures planeswalkers, life totals, or shields a draw engine by forcing removal now. Hold attacks when the face-down body is likely Willbender, Stratus Dancer, Kheru Spellsnatcher, or another interaction piece needed for the next stack window.
  • Preserve engine bodies: avoid trading Beast Whisperer, Seedborn Muse, Whisperwood Elemental, Yedora, Grave Gardener, and Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer in combat unless the legal block prevents lethal damage or protects a higher-value permanent. These cards create future turns; most face-down 2/2 bodies are the trading material.
  • Trade face-down creatures by role, not mystery: a generic manifested or morphed creature can trade for an opposing attacker if it protects life total, Kadena, or a key planeswalker, but do not trade a face-down card whose known owner information or visible action text indicates a high-impact reveal is available this turn.
  • Block for life thresholds: above roughly 25 life, prefer preserving morph density and accepting small noncommander damage unless the attacker carries snowballing triggers. Between 10 and 20 life, trade ordinary face-down creatures aggressively with evasive or scaling threats. Below 10 life, prioritize survival and leave mana for Heroic Intervention, face-up tricks, Bane of the Living, or instant-speed interaction over speculative attacks.
  • Turn face up before damage only when it changes combat: reveal Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Deathmist Raptor, Icefeather Aven, Silumgar Assassin, Aphetto Exterminator, Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, or Vesuvan Shapeshifter only if the legal face-up result improves blocks, removes a blocker, protects an engine, or creates a decisive attack. Do not reveal merely to show information.
  • Use oversized threats as closers: Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Thousand Winds, and copied bodies from Vesuvan Shapeshifter should attack when opponents are low on blockers or shields. Keep one high-toughness or high-impact body back if a crackback threatens Kadena or lethal damage.
  • Do not overtrade into sweepers: against control or removal-heavy boards, avoid converting every face-down creature into combat trades if Primordial Mist, Whisperwood Elemental, Secret Plans, or Trail of Mystery can keep building hidden material. Force the opponent to spend real answers instead of giving away bodies for small damage prevention.
  • Pressure planeswalkers and combo players: attacks should shift from life totals to planeswalkers or vulnerable combo seats when the visible board shows a permanent that will outscale morph value. Use Cyclonic Rift, Otawara, Soaring City, or a face-up tempo creature to clear the one blocker that prevents a meaningful pressure attack.
  • Commander combat rule: attack with Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer only when protection is equipped, blockers are absent or favorable, or commander damage materially changes the race. If Kadena dies, recast timing must account for commander tax and whether the next turn can still produce a face-down spell to regain the draw trigger.

Selection And Tutor Rules

  • Find the missing engine before the missing threat: use Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, and Worldly Tutor to assemble Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer plus a steady face-down pipeline before searching for closers. Priority finds are Seedborn Muse, Primordial Mist, Whisperwood Elemental, Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Scroll of Fate, or the exact interaction piece needed for a visible threat.
  • Tutor defensively when the table can break the engine: choose Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Counterspell, Swan Song, Cyclonic Rift, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, Reality Shift, Putrefy, or Toxic Deluge when a known spell, permanent, or combat state will kill Kadena, stop face-down casting, or end the game before value matters. Do not tutor for a morph payoff while a visible lock or lethal clock remains unanswered.
  • Use Worldly Tutor for timing-sensitive creatures: find Seedborn Muse when untap windows will multiply face-up tricks, Whisperwood Elemental when end-step manifest pressure matters, Bane of the Living or Ixidron when a creature board must be reset, Willbender, Stratus Dancer, or Kheru Spellsnatcher when the next stack fight is predictable, and Den Protector when a graveyard card is worth recovering.
  • Use Green Sun's Zenith only for legal green creature lines shown by the engine: common finds include Birds of Paradise, Elvish Mystic, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Bloom Tender, Deathrite Shaman, Den Protector, Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Deathmist Raptor, Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Yedora, Grave Gardener, Seedborn Muse, and Whisperwood Elemental if their mana value and timing are legal. Prefer ramp early, Seedborn Muse or Whisperwood Elemental for engine turns, and Bane of the Living alternatives only when the selected green creature actually solves the board.
  • Sequence top-deck tutors around draw triggers: cast Vampiric Tutor or Worldly Tutor before a draw step, before a Kadena draw from the first face-down creature each turn, or before an engine draw from Guardian Project or Beast Whisperer if the legal sequence immediately converts the tutored card to hand. Avoid top-deck tutoring before an opponent can force a shuffle or before you plan to crack Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Fabled Passage, or Prismatic Vista.
  • Resolve Fact or Fiction by role, not raw card count: take the pile that supplies mana plus an engine when behind on setup, interaction plus protection when a known threat is present, or morph density plus draw engine when Kadena is active. If one pile contains the only answer to a visible lethal or lock permanent, prefer that pile even over a larger value pile.
  • Use Trail of Mystery land search to stabilize colors: when its legal trigger searches for a basic, map targets to registered Island, Swamp, or Forest only. Take the missing color for commander recast, face-up costs, or interaction; otherwise take the basic that lets future fetch decisions preserve untapped duals.
  • Scry and bottom low-impact duplicates by current role: with Path of Ancestry or other visible scry/filter output, keep untapped lands, the first protection piece, and live morph/manifest engines; bottom extra mana rocks after six-plus mana, unsupported expensive creatures, or sweepers that would hurt your own board when no opposing board demands them.

Priority And Stack Rules

  • Spend priority to protect Kadena only when losing Kadena changes the turn: use Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Counterspell, Swan Song, Willbender, Stratus Dancer, or Kheru Spellsnatcher for removal, counters, sweepers, or targeted effects that stop the face-down engine. Let minor value spells and replaceable creature removal resolve when protection is needed for a later decisive stack window.
  • Keep face-up tricks hidden until the engine shows a legal payoff: turn Willbender face up only when the displayed target-change action redirects a spell or ability to a legal, better target; turn Stratus Dancer or Kheru Spellsnatcher face up only for stack objects they can legally interact with. Do not expose these cards for mana efficiency or uncertain text assumptions.
  • Use opponent end steps as the default reveal window: flip value or threat morphs after the last dangerous opponent has mostly spent mana, then untap with the revealed body. Break this rule when combat math, a stack object, or a lethal/survival window requires revealing before damage or during another players turn.
  • Treat Seedborn Muse as a priority multiplier: with it on board, hold mana through opposing turns for morph activations, Scroll of Fate, Cyclonic Rift, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, Reality Shift, Putrefy, Counterspell, and Swan Song. Do not tap out on your own main phase unless the new permanent creates more value than all missed response windows.
  • Let draw-tax permanents work before fighting: with Rhystic Study or Mystic Remora, allow opponents to make payment choices shown by the rules engine, then decide whether the spell still needs an answer. Do not counter a low-impact spell only because it declined to pay if the card draw has already supplied value.
  • Fire sweepers at clean breakpoints: cast Toxic Deluge, reveal Bane of the Living, resolve Ixidron, or use The Cyber-Controller only when the current legal result prevents lethal, breaks a superior board, or converts your hidden board into a stronger reset than opponents keep. Account for your own face-down creatures, engine creatures, and commander tax before choosing the window.
  • Preserve graveyard and recursion timing: use Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, Takenuma, Abandoned Mire, and Yedora, Grave Gardener lines only when the engine shows legal zone movement or recovery choices. Do not assume a face-down death, manifest state, or commander-zone replacement creates a recursion line unless public output confirms it.
  • Respect unresolved support risk for edge-case cards: for The Cyber-Controller and Ugin's Mastery, follow only the legal actions and revealed text supplied by Veles/Forge, and avoid policy-driven assumptions about hidden identity, replay redaction, or unsupported face-down ownership effects. If the engine exposes ambiguous hidden-information choices, route to model reasoning instead of no-API execution.

Sideboard Map

  • Sideboard from the Kadena engine outward: preserve enough face-down density, mana, and protection for Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer to generate cards while adding only the hate that directly changes the matchup. Do not overload on reactive cards if the post-board hand cannot cast a first face-down creature, protect Kadena, or recover from commander tax.

  • Veil of Summer is the sideboard copy for blue/black stack fights, discard, and targeted removal aimed at Kadena or the decisive face-up turn. It is weak against creature-heavy boards, colorless engines, and nonblue/nonblack removal; keep the main-deck copy in mind so the agent does not assume this effect is absent before sideboarding.

  • Heroic Intervention is the sideboard copy for sweepers, artifact/enchantment removal that would break Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Scroll of Fate, or a lethal combat turn, and protection from destroy-based resets. It is weak against exile sweepers, bounce, sacrifice, and stack fights where Counterspell, Swan Song, Negate, or Veil of Summer is the cleaner answer.

  • Force of Vigor enters against artifact/enchantment engines where spending mana during your own turn would expose Kadena or face-up tricks. It is weak when the opponent has few targets, when card disadvantage would strand the face-down engine, or when your own Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Dream Chisel, Obscuring Aether, Scroll of Fate, Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Guardian Project, or Ugin's Mastery matter more than answering one permanent.

  • Krosan Grip enters when an artifact or enchantment must die through stack interaction, especially prison pieces, combo artifacts, or enchantments that prevent face-down creatures from converting into value. It is weak against creature combo, planeswalker pressure, and low-impact targets where Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Boseiju, Who Endures, Beast Within, or Assassin's Trophy already covers the role.

  • Collector Ouphe enters against artifact-ramp and artifact-combo tables where shutting activated abilities buys more time than your own rocks lose. It is weak when your draw depends on Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Fellwar Stone, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Dream Chisel, or Scroll of Fate; avoid it when the lock slows Kadena more than opponents.

  • Grafdigger's Cage enters against graveyard-cast, library-cast, and creature-cheating engines if the rule text is relevant to visible opponent plans. It is weak when your own Green Sun's Zenith, Yedora, Grave Gardener, Den Protector, Takenuma, Abandoned Mire, or face-down recursion plans are the best route, and it does not answer already-resolved permanents by itself.

  • Endurance enters against graveyard engines, graveyard-fueled combo, and library-pressure games where the body also blocks profitably. It is weak when the opponent does not rely on graveyards, when holding green cards is costly, or when the decision requires exact card-reference metadata for shuffle timing and target-player choice.

  • Thoughtseize enters when a single known spell matters more than life total: fast combo, sweepers before a face-down commitment, or protection checks before resolving Kadena. It is weak against creature swarms, topdeck-heavy attrition, and matchups where losing life worsens a race that face-down blockers cannot stabilize.

  • Negate enters against planeswalkers, sweepers, combo noncreature spells, and interaction that targets Kadena or the engine. It is weak against creature-based pressure and board states where a face-up creature answer such as Bane of the Living, Ixidron, Silumgar Assassin, Aphetto Exterminator, Reality Shift, Putrefy, or Toxic Deluge is required.

  • Opposition Agent enters against search-heavy opponents and tutor-dependent combo when flashing in a disruptive creature is better than holding a normal counterspell. It is weak against decks with few search effects, against boards where a three-mana 3/2 does not trade usefully, and in windows where tapping mana prevents Kadena protection or a necessary face-up activation.

Artifact/enchantment engine plan Side in: Force of Vigor; Krosan Grip; Collector Ouphe Cut: Aphetto Exterminator; Silumgar Assassin; Sagu Mauler

  • Use this plan when opposing artifacts or enchantments are the main engine and creature removal is low-value. Aphetto Exterminator and Silumgar Assassin lose priority when their face-up removal text has too few legal targets, and Sagu Mauler is slower than hate plus Kadena card flow.

Blue-black control plan Side in: Veil of Summer; Negate; Thoughtseize; Heroic Intervention Cut: Aphetto Exterminator; Nantuko Vigilante; Sagu Mauler; Thousand Winds

  • Use this plan when the opponents best path is countering Kadena, stripping the payoff, or resolving sweepers. Keep enough morph bodies for draw triggers, but reduce expensive combat-only pressure and narrow permanent removal when the matchup is decided on the stack.

Graveyard-combo plan Side in: Endurance; Grafdigger's Cage; Thoughtseize; Negate Cut: Aphetto Exterminator; Sagu Mauler; Thousand Winds; Ugin, the Ineffable

  • Use this plan when visible graveyard resources or tutor lines threaten to win before Kadenas engine snowballs. Thoughtseize and Negate protect the graveyard hate from setup spells, while Endurance and Grafdigger's Cage attack the resource directly; avoid relying only on creature combat.

Search-heavy combo plan Side in: Opposition Agent; Thoughtseize; Negate; Veil of Summer Cut: Aphetto Exterminator; Nantuko Vigilante; Sagu Mauler; Thousand Winds

  • Use this plan when the opponents public plan depends on tutors, fetch chains, or noncreature combo spells. Hold Opposition Agent for an actual search window shown by the rules engine; do not cast it as a generic creature if the stack fight will matter next turn.

  • Add role cards: against fast creature pressure, prioritize the existing main-deck reset and removal roles from Bane of the Living, Ixidron, Toxic Deluge, Cyclonic Rift, Reality Shift, Putrefy, Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Silumgar Assassin, and Aphetto Exterminator before adding narrow sideboard hate. Reduce main-deck emphasis: expensive threat bodies that do not affect combat the turn they matter.

  • Add role cards: against spell combo, prioritize Thoughtseize, Negate, Veil of Summer, and Opposition Agent when legal search or stack cues support them. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow face-up beaters and creature-only interaction that cannot touch the decisive spell.

  • Add role cards: against artifact/enchantment prison, prioritize Force of Vigor, Krosan Grip, and sometimes Collector Ouphe if your own artifact abilities are less important than stopping the opponent. Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature-kill morphs and top-end combat cards that do not remove the lock.

  • Add role cards: against graveyard decks, prioritize Endurance and Grafdigger's Cage, with Thoughtseize or Negate when the graveyard engine is enabled by a noncreature spell. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow value cards that require multiple turns of face-down development before interacting.

Matchup Guidance

  • Aggro: survive the first damage wave before spending mana on hidden-identity luxuries. Keep hands with early mana from Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, Bloom Tender, Deathrite Shaman, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, or Fellwar Stone plus an actual stabilizer such as Bane of the Living, Ixidron, Toxic Deluge, Reality Shift, Putrefy, Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Silumgar Assassin, or Aphetto Exterminator. Use face-down creatures as blockers when life total is under pressure; Kadena value is secondary if taking a hit would force a later panic sweeper. Add role cards: Heroic Intervention when sweepers or combat blowouts decide the game, and Endurance when its body and graveyard text both matter. Reduce main-deck emphasis: expensive pressure-only cards such as Sagu Mauler and Thousand Winds when they cannot stabilize in time.

  • Go-wide: make the table prove you must commit more creatures before using Bane of the Living, Ixidron, Cyclonic Rift, or Toxic Deluge. Do not fire a reset for two low-impact attackers if a face-down creature can block and preserve the engine; do fire it before the opponent converts a wide board into lethal or a protection window. Secret Plans makes face-down blockers materially better, but it does not justify ignoring flyer pressure or trample. Whisperwood Elemental, Scroll of Fate, Primordial Mist, and Ugin's Mastery can rebuild after a reset, so preserve one engine if the visible board suggests repeated swarm turns.

  • Single-threat decks: prioritize clean answers over broad resets unless the threat is protected, recursive, or larger than your face-down blockers can contain. Reality Shift, Putrefy, Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Icefeather Aven, Willbender, Kheru Spellsnatcher, and Stratus Dancer are preferred when they answer one decisive spell or permanent without spending Toxic Deluge, Cyclonic Rift, or Bane of the Living. Keep Willbender and Stratus Dancer face down when the opponent is representing targeted interaction or a key instant or sorcery; revealing them for chip damage wastes the hidden-information tax this deck imposes.

  • Tempo: protect Kadena and mana efficiency before trying to win the long game. Against bounce, counters, and cheap threats, sequence Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Veil of Summer, Swan Song, Counterspell, and low-cost morph reducers such as Dream Chisel or Obscuring Aether so that Kadena either resolves with protection or is not your only card-flow plan. Do not tap out for Guardian Project, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, or Primordial Mist if the opponents visible clock plus open mana makes Kadena recast or a face-up defensive activation impossible next turn. Add role cards: Negate, Thoughtseize, and Veil of Summer when stack timing matters more than creature removal.

  • Control: force them to answer layered engines, not one large creature. Lead with tax and draw pieces such as Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Primordial Mist, and Scroll of Fate when the window is safer than committing Kadena into open countermagic. Use Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, and Green Sun's Zenith to find either protection, card flow, or the specific face-down creature that pressures their axis; do not default to a finisher if a protected Kadena turn will draw multiple cards. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Negate, Veil of Summer, and Heroic Intervention. Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature-only removal and slow combat-only threats when the game is decided by sweepers and counterspells.

  • Removal-heavy decks: make every removal spell trade down by diversifying permanent types and hiding high-value creatures. Avoid casting Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer into obvious removal without Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Counterspell, or Swan Song unless falling behind is worse than losing the commander. Face-down Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, and Kheru Spellsnatcher punish removal timing because the opponent may not know which answer matters. If Kadena dies, use commander tax only when recasting immediately restores cards or blocks; otherwise rebuild with Whisperwood Elemental, Primordial Mist, Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, or Ugin, the Ineffable first.

  • Midrange: win by converting hidden information into repeated two-for-ones. Trade early creatures when Grim Haruspex, Secret Plans, Guardian Project, or Kadena rewards the exchange, but preserve face-down creatures with unique interaction text until their trigger or face-up ability has a target. Ainok Survivalist and Nantuko Vigilante should stay hidden until a real artifact or enchantment target matters; do not reveal them just to increase damage unless the opponent is near lethal. Den Protector should recover the highest-impact used card only after visible resources show whether interaction, tutor, sweeper, or engine is needed.

  • Big mana: pressure while holding interaction for the payoff, not the ramp spell unless that ramp creates an immediate irreversible state. Develop Kadena plus low-cost face-down bodies quickly, then reserve Counterspell, Swan Song, Stratus Dancer, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Cyclonic Rift, and Reality Shift for the first decisive spell or permanent. Opposition Agent is strong only when the rules engine shows an actual search window; casting it as a generic attacker loses much of its value. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Negate, and Opposition Agent when the opponent relies on search or noncreature payoff spells.

  • Combo: identify whether the combo is stack-based, permanent-based, creature-based, graveyard-based, or search-based before committing mana. Use Thoughtseize, Negate, Veil of Summer, Swan Song, Counterspell, Stratus Dancer, and Kheru Spellsnatcher against stack and setup spells; use Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Putrefy, Reality Shift, Cyclonic Rift, Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Boseiju, Who Endures, or Otawara, Soaring City against visible permanents. Add role cards: Opposition Agent for search, Grafdigger's Cage for relevant graveyard/library-cast or creature-cheating text, and Endurance when shuffling a graveyard resource is the correct axis. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow face-up beaters that do not disrupt the combo turn.

  • Graveyard decks: attack the graveyard before costs are paid or recursion resolves, not after the opponent has already converted it into a spell or permanent. Deathrite Shaman, Endurance, Grafdigger's Cage, Scavenging effects if card-reference metadata confirms them from visible cards, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire decisions must respect the exact legal action text shown by the engine. Do not overuse your own graveyard if Grafdigger's Cage is part of the plan; Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, Yedora, Grave Gardener, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire become weaker when your hate constrains your own recursion. Add role cards: Endurance, Grafdigger's Cage, Thoughtseize, and Negate.

  • Artifact/enchantment decks: decide whether you are answering one permanent or suppressing an engine. Use Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Boseiju, Who Endures, Beast Within, Assassin's Trophy, Cyclonic Rift, Force of Vigor, and Krosan Grip for specific high-impact artifacts or enchantments. Use Collector Ouphe only when opposing activated abilities matter more than your own Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Fellwar Stone, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Dream Chisel, or Scroll of Fate. Preserve at least one answer for the permanent that actually stops face-down deployment or Kadena card flow.

  • Burn: protect life total and commander access before maximizing card draw. Toxic Deluge life payment must be conservative, and shock-land or fetch-land sequencing from Breeding Pool, Watery Grave, Overgrown Tomb, Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Fabled Passage, and Prismatic Vista should avoid unnecessary life loss when colored mana is already covered. Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, Counterspell, Swan Song, and Stratus Dancer should protect Kadena or stop lethal burn windows, not merely preserve a random face-down creature. Race only when the visible clock shows your face-down board can end the game before burn topdecks do.

Specific Matchup Notes

  • General/archetype-only: revealed cards override assumptions, so treat these notes as default routing until the engine exposes exact threats, colors, graveyards, stack objects, or search effects. Against unknown pods, prioritize early colored mana, one draw-tax or face-down engine, and a protected Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer over speculative interaction.

  • Creature swarm: make the opponent commit before spending the sweeper. Priority targets are board-wide damage clocks, go-wide anthem effects, and evasive lethal lines. Toxic Deluge, Bane of the Living, Ixidron, Thousand Winds, and overloaded Cyclonic Rift are the reset package; preserve life total when paying for Toxic Deluge. Add role cards: Heroic Intervention if their sweepers punish your rebuild, not if the matchup is only small attackers. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow single-target permission when the table is already on battlefield pressure.

  • Blue permission/control: fight over engines and commander access, not every answer. Priority targets are counterspells aimed at Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, sweepers that erase multiple face-down permanents, and card-advantage permanents that outscale Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Guardian Project, or Beast Whisperer. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Negate, Veil of Summer, and Heroic Intervention. Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature-only removal such as Silumgar Assassin and Aphetto Exterminator when few legal targets are likely.

  • Artifact or enchantment engines: answer the engine piece, not the first utility permanent. Priority targets are permanents that stop face-down casting, deny Kadena triggers, generate repeated mana, or lock combat. Add role cards: Force of Vigor, Krosan Grip, and Collector Ouphe only when opposing activated artifacts matter more than your own Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Fellwar Stone, Dream Chisel, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, and Scroll of Fate.

  • Graveyard recursion: use hate before the graveyard card is converted into a cost or resolved object. Priority targets are graveyard engines, flashback-like access, reanimation targets, and library-or-graveyard creature cheating if card-reference metadata confirms the exact text. Add role cards: Endurance, Grafdigger's Cage, Thoughtseize, and Negate. Reduce main-deck emphasis: self-recursion lines with Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, Yedora, Grave Gardener, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire when your own Grafdigger's Cage constrains them.

  • Search-heavy combo or big mana: keep mana open for the decisive search or payoff window. Priority targets are tutor/search actions for Opposition Agent, noncreature payoff spells for Negate, Counterspell, Swan Song, Stratus Dancer, or Kheru Spellsnatcher, and resolved permanents for Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Boseiju, Who Endures, Otawara, Soaring City, or Cyclonic Rift. Add role cards: Opposition Agent, Thoughtseize, and Negate.

  • Removal-heavy midrange: make removal collide with hidden identity and protection. Priority targets are cards that exile Kadena, sweep multiple face-down creatures, or remove Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, and Scroll of Fate. Add role cards: Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, and Thoughtseize. Reduce main-deck emphasis: high-mana face-up threats when commander tax already makes recasting Kadena difficult.

Risk Summary

  • Mana risk: the deck needs early green or artifact acceleration plus blue-black-green access for interaction and face-down development. Path of Ancestry, Zagoth Triome, check lands, slow lands, fetch lands, shock lands, original duals, and Pathways require runtime sequencing; do not keep hands where Sol Ring or a Signet hides missing colored mana for Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer.

  • Matchup risk: creature decks can force premature Toxic Deluge, while spell combo can ignore face-down combat. Identify the opponent axis before tutoring; Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, and Green Sun's Zenith should find protection, disruption, draw, or the exact creature needed for the visible matchup.

  • Draw risk: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer is the best draw engine but also the most exposed one. If commander tax rises, shift to Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Primordial Mist, Secret Plans, Ugin, the Ineffable, or Fact or Fiction instead of recasting into open removal without payoff.

  • Over-sideboarding risk: sideboard cards can damage the deck's own infrastructure. Collector Ouphe weakens the artifact-mana and equipment package, Grafdigger's Cage can constrain your own graveyard plans, and too many stack-only cards can leave you behind against battlefield decks.

  • Graveyard risk: Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, Yedora, Grave Gardener, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire create value only while zones and legal targets cooperate. Do not assume recursion is available through exile effects, replacement effects, or your own hate permanents.

  • Sweeper/removal risk: many face-down creatures look interchangeable until their hidden text matters. Avoid turning up Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Kheru Spellsnatcher, or Bane of the Living without a concrete legal target or combat/survival reason.

  • Closer risk: large creatures such as Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Thousand Winds, and Vesuvan Shapeshifter close slowly if the table has flyers, fog-like effects, or sweepers. Convert card advantage into a protected lethal board before opponents stabilize.

  • Interaction risk: stack-only cards cannot answer resolved permanents, and permanent removal can give opponents replacement resources. Preserve Counterspell, Swan Song, Veil of Summer, and Stratus Dancer for stack windows; use Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Putrefy, Reality Shift, Boseiju, Who Endures, and Otawara, Soaring City only when the visible permanent matters enough.

  • Sequencing risk: face-down support has unresolved edge-case coverage for owner information, replay redaction, The Cyber-Controller, and Ugin's Mastery. When metadata or rules-engine support is missing, avoid text-specific claims and choose only legal actions exposed by the runtime.

Test Feedback Checklist

  • Deciding factor: Which exact sequence decided the game: early Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, protected face-down velocity, a sweeper reset, unanswered opponent combo, commander tax, or stalled mana?

  • Mulligans: Did the opener produce early green or artifact acceleration, at least two functional mana sources, and a credible path to blue-black-green access without relying on unsupported hidden information?

  • Mana: Did Command Tower, fetch lands, shock lands, original duals, Pathways, Zagoth Triome, check lands, and slow lands sequence into the colors needed for Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer, face-up costs, and interaction?

  • Velocity: Did Kadenas first face-down creature each turn meaningfully convert into cards, or did the pilot cast face-down creatures without the commander or another engine online?

  • Engines: Which engine actually mattered: Secret Plans, Trail of Mystery, Primordial Mist, Scroll of Fate, Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Ugin, the Ineffable, or Whisperwood Elemental?

  • Commander handling: Did the pilot protect Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer with Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, or permission before exposing commander tax risk?

  • Face-down decisions: Did the pilot preserve hidden identity until a legal tactical window, or turn up Ainok Survivalist, Nantuko Vigilante, Stratus Dancer, Willbender, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Bane of the Living, or Thousand Winds without a concrete target or survival reason?

  • Removal: Did Assassin's Trophy, Beast Within, Reality Shift, Putrefy, Cyclonic Rift, Toxic Deluge, Boseiju, Who Endures, and Otawara, Soaring City answer the highest-impact visible permanent rather than the first available target?

  • Stack discipline: Were Counterspell, Swan Song, Veil of Summer, Stratus Dancer, and Kheru Spellsnatcher saved for decisive stack windows, especially sweepers, commander removal, combo payoffs, and engine-breaking spells?

  • Combat and closing: Did Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Deathmist Raptor, Den Protector, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, and wide face-down boards convert advantage into lethal pressure before opponents rebuilt?

  • Tutors and selection: Did Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Fact or Fiction, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire find the card that matched the visible problem instead of defaulting to generic value?

  • Sideboard: Did the chosen sideboard cards solve the matchup without harming the decks own plan, especially Collector Ouphe versus artifact mana, Grafdigger's Cage versus recursion, and stack-only cards versus battlefield pressure?

  • Stranded cards: Record any card stuck in hand because of mana, timing, target restrictions, commander absence, missing metadata, or unsupported face-down/replay behavior.

  • Validation: Flag any ambiguous runtime handling for face-down owner information, replay redaction, The Cyber-Controller, or Ugin's Mastery as missing card-reference or engine-support metadata rather than treating the result as strategic proof.

First Tuning Questions

  • Mana base: Does the deck need more untapped green sources or one-mana acceleration if hands with Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, Deathrite Shaman, or Bloom Tender fail to cast early support on time?

  • Ramp balance: Are Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, and Fellwar Stone enough, or does artifact reliance make Collector Ouphe sideboard plans too self-damaging?

  • Commander dependency: Does the deck still function when Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer costs six or more, or should more weight move toward Guardian Project, Beast Whisperer, Primordial Mist, Rhystic Study, and Mystic Remora?

  • Face-down density: Are there enough impactful morph, megamorph, manifest, and face-down payoffs, or are support cards crowding out threats like Sagu Mauler, Hooded Hydra, Thousand Winds, and Brine Elemental?

  • Aggro plan: If fast creature decks force early Toxic Deluge too often, should the list increase cheap interaction, lifepreserving blockers, or repeatable board-control creatures such as Bane of the Living?

  • Control plan: If blue permission decks stop Kadena repeatedly, should the sideboard emphasize Thoughtseize, Negate, Veil of Summer, Heroic Intervention, and Opposition Agent more heavily?

  • Graveyard conflict: Do Den Protector, Deathmist Raptor, Yedora, Grave Gardener, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire justify their slots when Grafdigger's Cage or opposing graveyard hate is common?

  • Closing power: If games stall after card advantage, should the deck add more resilient closers, protect Sagu Mauler-style threats better, or tune toward Cyclonic Rift and Thousand Winds finish windows?

  • Sideboard slots: Are Force of Vigor, Krosan Grip, and Collector Ouphe too many artifact/enchantment answers, or are they necessary because resolved engines beat hidden-creature pressure?

  • Role conflict: Does the deck lose more by playing too defensively with hidden tricks, or by committing face-down boards into sweepers before protection and card engines are established?

Veles Tactical Policy

Policy: Commander Setup Gate

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: mulligan; mana; priority
  • Cards: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer; Lightning Greaves; Swiftfoot Boots; Heroic Intervention; Veil of Summer; Counterspell; Swan Song
  • Phase windows: opening hand through first main phases before committing the commander.
  • Runtime cues: commander legal to cast; protection or permission visible; opponents have untapped mana or open removal colors.
  • Use when: the line can cast Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer and either protect her now, reload with face-down creatures this turn cycle, or recast before falling behind.
  • Avoid when: casting Kadena taps out into visible stack pressure or leaves no follow-up face-down creature before the next turn.
  • Instructions: Treat Kadena as the engine, not a generic value creature; prioritize a protected commander plus one face-down trigger over unsupported morph deployment.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Early Enabler Before Hidden Board

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: mana; priority
  • Cards: Elvish Mystic; Birds of Paradise; Deathrite Shaman; Sol Ring; Arcane Signet; Simic Signet; Dimir Signet; Golgari Signet; Fellwar Stone; Dream Chisel; Obscuring Aether; Secret Plans; Trail of Mystery
  • Phase windows: turns one through three main phases.
  • Runtime cues: legal cast actions for acceleration, cost reducers, or face-down payoffs.
  • Use when: the opener lacks enough mana or cost reduction to cast Kadena and a face-down creature on schedule.
  • Avoid when: the enabler conflicts with holding stack interaction against a visible faster combo or lethal setup.
  • Instructions: Build mana and cost reduction before spending face-down cards as anonymous 2/2s; prefer colored acceleration that supports blue-black-green access.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 1.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Keep Functional Commander Hands

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: mulligan; pregame
  • Cards: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer; Elvish Mystic; Birds of Paradise; Bloom Tender; Sol Ring; Arcane Signet; Command Tower; Path of Ancestry; Zagoth Triome
  • Phase windows: pregame mulligan.
  • Runtime cues: opening hand lands, acceleration, and color sources visible.
  • Use when: the hand has at least two mana sources, a path to green plus blue or black, and either acceleration, Kadena access, or a face-down engine.
  • Avoid when: the hand cannot produce early green, cannot approach Kadena colors, or contains only slow lands plus expensive morph payoffs.
  • Instructions: Mulligan hands that rely on unsupported hidden information or late topdecks to begin playing; keep hands that sequence mana into commander plus protected velocity.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 1.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Fetch And Pathway Color Discipline

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: mana
  • Cards: Misty Rainforest; Polluted Delta; Verdant Catacombs; Windswept Heath; Marsh Flats; Fabled Passage; Prismatic Vista; Barkchannel Pathway; Clearwater Pathway; Darkbore Pathway; Breeding Pool; Watery Grave; Overgrown Tomb; Tropical Island; Underground Sea; Bayou; Island; Swamp; Forest
  • Phase windows: land play and activated land-search windows.
  • Runtime cues: legal land play, fetch activation, or Pathway face choice.
  • Use when: choosing a land source determines access to Kadena colors, face-up costs, or stack interaction.
  • Avoid when: the current color choice strands a known hand card or removes access to protection mana.
  • Instructions: Fetch and choose Pathway faces to preserve green acceleration first, then blue interaction, then black removal and tutors; do not describe fetch choices as accessing a basic type absent from the registered deck.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: First Face-Down Trigger

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: priority; selection
  • Cards: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer; Den Protector; Stratus Dancer; Willbender; Vesuvan Shapeshifter; Brine Elemental; Kheru Spellsnatcher; Ainok Survivalist; Nantuko Vigilante; Icefeather Aven; Hooded Hydra; Thousand Winds; Silumgar Assassin; Aphetto Exterminator; Bane of the Living
  • Phase windows: each turn's main phase when the first face-down creature may be cast.
  • Runtime cues: face-down cast action available while Kadena or cost reducers are active.
  • Use when: this is the first face-down creature this turn and the cast generates Kadena velocity or advances a protected board.
  • Avoid when: the face-down card is needed for a specific face-up answer and no replacement answer is visible.
  • Instructions: Prefer the first face-down creature each turn over lower-impact spells when Kadena is active; preserve identity uncertainty unless turning face up answers a concrete visible object.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 1.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Turn-Face-Up Commitment

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: priority; interaction; combat
  • Cards: Stratus Dancer; Willbender; Kheru Spellsnatcher; Ainok Survivalist; Nantuko Vigilante; Bane of the Living; Thousand Winds; Vesuvan Shapeshifter; Brine Elemental; Den Protector
  • Phase windows: stack, combat, and end-step windows where legal face-up actions are exposed.
  • Runtime cues: action:turn face up; visible spell, permanent, combat state, or graveyard target.
  • Use when: the legal face-up action changes a visible stack object, removes a decisive permanent, survives combat, unlocks lethal, or recovers a named card needed now.
  • Avoid when: the only gain is revealing identity without changing the visible board, stack, combat, or next-turn survival.
  • Instructions: Treat face-up choices as commitment gates; spend hidden information only for concrete tactical leverage.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Stack Permission Gate

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: interaction; priority
  • Cards: Counterspell; Swan Song; Veil of Summer; Stratus Dancer; Kheru Spellsnatcher
  • Phase windows: opponent spell on stack, own protected spell on stack, or decisive stack exchange.
  • Runtime cues: legal counter, protection, or face-up counter action.
  • Use when: the spell on stack removes Kadena, sweeps the board, wins the game, disables the face-down engine, or stops this deck's committed lethal turn.
  • Avoid when: the spell is a low-impact permanent or a bait spell and resolved-permanent answers are available.
  • Instructions: Stack-only cards answer spells, not resolved permanents; preserve them for commander survival, sweepers, combo payoffs, and engine-breaking interaction.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Protection Commitment

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: interaction; priority
  • Cards: Lightning Greaves; Swiftfoot Boots; Heroic Intervention; Veil of Summer
  • Phase windows: equip windows, response windows, and precombat protection setup.
  • Runtime cues: legal equip, protection, or response action with Kadena or engine pieces exposed.
  • Use when: protecting Kadena, a decisive face-down board, or an engine prevents commander tax, a sweeper loss, or a removal exchange that breaks velocity.
  • Avoid when: protection does not cover the visible threat's legal effect or consumes mana needed for a higher-priority stack answer.
  • Instructions: Confirm the protection effect matches the visible threat before acting; do not assume shroud, hexproof, indestructible, or color protection covers every removal type.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Permanent Removal Triage

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: interaction; priority
  • Cards: Beast Within; Assassin's Trophy; Reality Shift; Putrefy; Cyclonic Rift; Toxic Deluge; Boseiju, Who Endures; Otawara, Soaring City; Ainok Survivalist; Nantuko Vigilante
  • Phase windows: main phase, opponent end step, combat response, and channel or instant-speed windows.
  • Runtime cues: legal target permanent, destroy, exile, bounce, channel, or sweeper action.
  • Use when: the visible permanent stops Kadena velocity, threatens lethal, locks face-down actions, or outpaces the board.
  • Avoid when: the target is replaceable pressure and the answer gives the opponent a resource while a better stack or combat answer exists.
  • Instructions: Spend broad answers on engines, combo permanents, lethal threats, and hate pieces before ordinary creatures.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Deterministic Commander Return

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: priority
  • Cards: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer
  • Phase windows: commander zone replacement or state-based commander move prompt.
  • Runtime cues: action:commander_zone:yes; action:replacement:yes
  • Use when: Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer is moving to graveyard or exile and no visible deck-specific graveyard recursion line has already been selected for the commander.
  • Avoid when: the legal action text is not the commander-zone yes action or the chosen line explicitly needs Kadena in the graveyard this turn.
  • Instructions: Choose the command-zone return and track commander tax for the next recast.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 1.
  • No-API allowed: yes
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Combat Pressure With Hidden Bodies

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: combat
  • Cards: Sagu Mauler; Hooded Hydra; Deathmist Raptor; Den Protector; Vesuvan Shapeshifter; Thousand Winds; Brine Elemental
  • Phase windows: declare attackers, declare blockers, and combat trick windows.
  • Runtime cues: legal attack, block, or turn-face-up action.
  • Use when: attacking preserves necessary blockers or threatens commander-damage-independent lethal pressure through large, evasive, or resilient creatures.
  • Avoid when: attacking taps a required blocker under visible crackback lethal or reveals a morph for no combat advantage.
  • Instructions: Convert card advantage into damage once protected; use face-up surprises to win combat, not to show information early.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Board Reset Gate

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: interaction; priority
  • Cards: Toxic Deluge; Cyclonic Rift; Bane of the Living; Thousand Winds; Ixidron
  • Phase windows: main phase, overload or instant window when available, and combat-survival windows.
  • Runtime cues: legal sweeper, overload, bounce, face-up, or reset action.
  • Use when: opponents have lethal pressure, a stronger board, or a lock state that single-target answers cannot solve.
  • Avoid when: the reset destroys this deck's protected engine while opponents can rebuild faster.
  • Instructions: Reset only when survival, tempo swing, or lethal follow-up justifies spending the deck's own board.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Tutor And Selection Gate

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: selection
  • Cards: Demonic Tutor; Vampiric Tutor; Worldly Tutor; Green Sun's Zenith; Fact or Fiction; Takenuma, Abandoned Mire
  • Phase windows: legal tutor, selection, mill, or recursion windows.
  • Runtime cues: search, reveal, choose pile, return card, or selection action.
  • Use when: the visible game state identifies a missing role: commander protection, mana, sweeper, stack answer, removal, engine, or closing threat.
  • Avoid when: selecting a generic engine ignores a visible lethal threat or known stack window.
  • Instructions: Route target and card selection through model reasoning; exact card choice depends on visible pressure, available mana, and known public information.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Den Protector Recursion Target

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: selection; priority
  • Cards: Den Protector
  • Phase windows: legal face-up trigger or recursion-target window.
  • Runtime cues: action:target Den Protector; graveyard card choices visible.
  • Use when: choosing the returned card determines survival, protection, a reset, or a lethal/engine follow-up.
  • Avoid when: no graveyard card materially changes the current or next turn.
  • Instructions: Use light-model selection for the exact returned card; prefer visible role need over generic card quantity.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Unsupported Face-Down Metadata Guard

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: priority; selection
  • Cards: The Cyber-Controller; Ugin's Mastery; Scroll of Fate; Primordial Mist; Whisperwood Elemental; Ixidron
  • Phase windows: manifest, face-down creation, replay-relevant, or hidden-identity windows.
  • Runtime cues: legal face-down, manifest, disguise-like, exile-cast, or identity-changing action.
  • Use when: the rules engine exposes a legal action and the public result can be evaluated without inventing hidden card text.
  • Avoid when: owner information, replay redaction, or exact support for The Cyber-Controller or Ugin's Mastery is missing from metadata.
  • Instructions: Follow legal engine output and avoid text-specific claims when metadata is incomplete; preserve hidden identity as strategic information.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Draw Engine Commitment

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: priority; mana
  • Cards: Rhystic Study; Mystic Remora; Guardian Project; Beast Whisperer; Secret Plans; Primordial Mist; Ugin, the Ineffable
  • Phase windows: main phase deployment and upkeep payment windows.
  • Runtime cues: legal cast, upkeep pay, draw trigger, or engine activation action.
  • Use when: the engine will draw through face-down deployment or tax opponents before the deck runs out of cards.
  • Avoid when: paying upkeep or tapping out prevents commander recast, survival interaction, or a decisive board reset.
  • Instructions: Keep engines that convert repeated creatures into cards; decline costs that choke mana during a critical protection or interaction turn.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Sideboard Anti-Artifact And Graveyard Plans

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: sideboard
  • Cards: Force of Vigor; Collector Ouphe; Krosan Grip; Grafdigger's Cage; Endurance
  • Phase windows: pregame sideboard and post-board game planning.
  • Runtime cues: known opponent artifact engine, enchantment engine, graveyard recursion, flashback, reanimation, or library-graveyard dependency.
  • Use when: the opponent's revealed plan depends on artifacts, enchantments, graveyard access, or library-to-graveyard conversion more than this deck does.
  • Avoid when: Collector Ouphe disables this deck's needed Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Simic Signet, Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, Fellwar Stone, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Scroll of Fate, or Dream Chisel more than it harms the opponent.
  • Instructions: Sideboard hate must solve the opponent's plan while preserving Kadena velocity.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 2.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Sideboard Stack And Hand Disruption

  • Priority: Medium
  • Decision families: sideboard; interaction
  • Cards: Thoughtseize; Negate; Veil of Summer; Heroic Intervention; Opposition Agent
  • Phase windows: pregame sideboard, discard windows, response windows, and search-response windows.
  • Runtime cues: opponent control, combo, tutor, sweeper, or targeted interaction plan is known.
  • Use when: post-board games require stopping a spell, search effect, sweeper, or targeted disruption before it resolves.
  • Avoid when: the opponent's pressure is mostly resolved creatures or permanents and stack-only cards will be stranded.
  • Instructions: Add disruption for combo/control and protect commander turns; do not treat stack-only cards as answers to resolved battlefield threats.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 3.
  • No-API allowed: no
  • Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Execute Exact Lethal Attack Only

  • Priority: High
  • Decision families: combat
  • Cards: none
  • Phase windows: declare attackers.
  • Runtime cues: action:attack with all attackers; visible opponent life total and combat damage assignment.
  • Use when: exactly one legal attack action presents lethal damage to the defending opponent through currently visible blockers and no attacker is needed to survive the next combat.
  • Avoid when: multiple attack groups are legal, hidden tricks matter, blockers can change the result, or survival requires a blocker.
  • Instructions: Choose the exact lethal attack action only when visible combat math is deterministic.
  • Pilot skill floor: Level 1.
  • No-API allowed: yes
  • Light-model allowed: yes
