Strategy Specifications

Deck Name And Archetype

Gitrog Cleanup Dredge is a Commander strategy named Gitrog Cleanup Dredge, registered as edge_commander_gitrog_cleanup_dredge, with The Gitrog Monster as commander and a black-green color identity. The deck is a rogue edge-case engine/combo shell, not a stock Commander midrange list: its core identity is cleanup-step discard, dredge replacement choices, land recursion, graveyard setup, and rules-bound loop execution through visible legal actions.

Format validation passes under the active Veles Commander contract: the main deck is exactly 100 cards including the command-zone commander, singleton constraints are respected outside basic lands, and the only repeated main-deck names are Forest with 3 copies and Swamp with 2 copies. The registered Veles policy sideboard contains exactly 10 cards: Endurance, Collector Ouphe, Haywire Mite, Scavenging Ooze, Pithing Needle, Pernicious Deed, Force of Vigor, Thoughtseize, Necromentia, and Surgical Extraction.

Archetype tags are edge-case, draft-only, cleanup step, dredge, discard loops, land recursion, and shuffle/replacement timing. Treat these tags as tactical warnings: the pilot must preserve rules-engine legality, replacement-effect timing, cleanup-step trigger loops, and bounded prompt handling before it tries to maximize abstract card advantage.

The decks primary mechanical axis is The Gitrog Monster plus land movement between battlefield, hand, library, and graveyard. Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Darkblast, Bazaar of Baghdad, Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, and Skirge Familiar define the discard/dredge engine, but every choice remains conditional on the rules-engine exposing legal replacement, discard, draw, and cleanup actions.

The decks land-recursion package makes lands tactical objects rather than passive mana only. Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Oracle of Mul Daya, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Exploration, Burgeoning, Manabond, Squandered Resources, Zuran Orb, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Field of the Dead, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Glacial Chasm, Bojuka Bog, Boseiju, Who Endures, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire all create board-state-sensitive lines that require visible zones and exact legal actions.

Mana validation is strategically nontrivial even though the color identity is only black-green. The deck uses many utility and non-mana-role lands, including Bazaar of Baghdad, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Field of the Dead, Glacial Chasm, Strip Mine, Wasteland, and Ghost Quarter, so early keeps must prove access to green and black development through cards such as Command Tower, Overgrown Tomb, Bayou, Llanowar Wastes, Twilight Mire, Deathcap Glade, Blooming Marsh, Darkbore Pathway, Forest, Swamp, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, and Talisman of Resilience before relying on high-ceiling utility sequences.

Legality and support concerns remain metadata concerns, not gameplay claims. The active deck-count validation passes, but Veles should still validate Commander legality/support metadata for Bazaar of Baghdad, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, and Golgari Grave-Troll, and should prove that cleanup-step prompt sequences involving dredge, discard, and The Gitrog Monster remain bounded before public showcase use.

Opponent information status is unspecified. No opponent decklist, metagame target, or reflection request was supplied, so the pilot must not assume hidden interaction, named opposing staples, or matchup-specific hate unless that information is public in the game state, sideboard plan, or runtime pairing context.

Thesis

Gitrog Cleanup Dredge assembles The Gitrog Monster plus repeatable land movement, discard access, and dredge replacement choices to convert lands entering the graveyard into cards, mana, recursion, and eventually a board or graveyard payoff. Prioritize a legal engine over raw speed: the deck wants The Gitrog Monster active with a discard outlet such as Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, Skirge Familiar, or Bazaar of Baghdad, plus a dredge or land-recursion card such as Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, or Darkblast.

The deck wins by turning recursive land flow into inevitability, not by playing normal black-green good-stuff turns. Titania, Protector of Argoth, Field of the Dead, Tireless Tracker, Tireless Provisioner, Finale of Devastation, Dread Return, Reanimate, Animate Dead, and commander-fueled draw loops are payoff paths, but Veles should only treat a loop as deterministic when the rules engine exposes the actual discard, draw, dredge, cleanup-step, mana, graveyard, and target actions needed to continue.

The deck is not trying to keep speculative hands that only contain utility lands and expensive engines. Early priority is colored development, then an engine permanent, then a way to put lands into graveyard or replay them; Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, Exploration, Burgeoning, Manabond, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, and Conduit of Worlds are strongest when they enable this exact sequence rather than isolated acceleration.

The tactical quality gate is legality and bounded execution. Do not invent dredge availability, cleanup-step continuation, commander draw triggers, shuffle/replacement outcomes, or graveyard targets; if the engine has not exposed the choice, pass or choose a lower-risk visible action. Treat unresolved metadata for Bazaar of Baghdad, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, and Golgari Grave-Troll as validation risk rather than a reason to improvise illegal lines.

Role Package

  • Threats: The Gitrog Monster is the central threat and engine; protect access to commander recasts through mana planning and commander-tax awareness. Titania, Protector of Argoth, Field of the Dead, Tireless Tracker, Tireless Provisioner, Underrealm Lich, Skirge Familiar, and large Finale of Devastation turns are closing pressure once land recursion or graveyard volume is already online.

  • Payoffs: Dread Return, Reanimate, and Animate Dead convert graveyard setup into battlefield material; select targets only from visible legal graveyard choices. Zuran Orb, Squandered Resources, Glacial Chasm, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Bojuka Bog, Boseiju, Who Endures, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire become payoff tools when paired with Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds.

  • Engines: Life from the Loam, Dakmor Salvage, Bazaar of Baghdad, The Gitrog Monster, Sylvan Library, The One Ring, Tortured Existence, Squandered Resources, Exploration, Burgeoning, Manabond, Oracle of Mul Daya, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, and Conduit of Worlds are the core repeatable-resource cards. Sequence them to make lands playable from hand or graveyard before sacrificing, cycling, discarding, or tutoring utility lands.

  • Velocity: Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Worldly Tutor, Grisly Salvage, Mulch, Satyr Wayfinder, Stitcher's Supplier, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Darkblast, Barren Moor, and Tranquil Thicket find or stock the engine. Prefer velocity that also supplies lands or dredge cards when The Gitrog Monster is available or imminent.

  • Interaction: Assassin's Trophy, Abrupt Decay, Force of Vigor, Toxic Deluge, Darkblast, Bojuka Bog, Boseiju, Who Endures, Strip Mine, Wasteland, and Ghost Quarter answer blockers, hate, graveyards, lands, and lock pieces. Spend interaction to protect the engine from visible disruption or stop faster wins; avoid firing flexible answers at low-impact permanents before the Gitrog engine is assembled.

  • Protection: Veil of Summer, Sylvan Safekeeper, Glacial Chasm, Zuran Orb, Noxious Revival, and careful commander recast planning preserve the engine. Use protection for decisive turns, not cosmetic value, and do not sacrifice critical land infrastructure unless the visible survival or combo payoff justifies it.

  • Recursion: Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Tortured Existence, Noxious Revival, Takenuma, Abandoned Mire, Reanimate, Animate Dead, and Dread Return let the pilot reuse lands, creatures, and topdeck access. Recursion choices should name the exact visible card that advances engine continuity or closes the game.

  • Mana: Colored stability comes from Command Tower, Overgrown Tomb, Bayou, Llanowar Wastes, Twilight Mire, Nurturing Peatland, Woodland Cemetery, Deathcap Glade, Blooming Marsh, Darkbore Pathway, Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Prismatic Vista, Fabled Passage, Forest, Swamp, Dryad Arbor, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, and Talisman of Resilience. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, Cabal Coffers, and Gaea's Cradle are high-ceiling mana pieces but need board context.

  • Sideboard modules: Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, and Surgical Extraction are graveyard-pressure tools; Collector Ouphe, Haywire Mite, Pithing Needle, Pernicious Deed, and sideboard Force of Vigor address artifact, enchantment, activated-ability, and board-permanent pressure; Thoughtseize and Necromentia are proactive disruption for known combo or key-card matchups.

Primary Win Conditions

  • Engine-dredge takeover: The Gitrog Monster plus a legal discard outlet and dredge card is the main path to overwhelming resources. Set up The Gitrog Monster with Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, or Darkblast, then use Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, Skirge Familiar, or Bazaar of Baghdad only when the rules engine exposes the discard and draw/dredge choices. Prioritize this line when the commander is active or safely castable, hand size or recursion can keep the loop bounded, and opponents do not have visible graveyard hate or stack interaction that makes committing worse than waiting.

  • Land-recursion board kill: Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds converts fetchlands, cycling lands, and sacrifice lands into repeatable material. Pair those engines with Titania, Protector of Argoth to build Elemental pressure, with Field of the Dead to build Zombie pressure, or with Tireless Tracker and Tireless Provisioner to snowball cards and mana before attacking. Prioritize this line when graveyard recursion is available but a full dredge commitment is unsafe, or when visible opponents are vulnerable to board pressure rather than a single graveyard stack.

  • Mana-payoff finish: Finale of Devastation is the cleanest mana-sink closer when Cabal Coffers, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Gaea's Cradle, Squandered Resources, Lotus Cobra, Tireless Provisioner, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, or Talisman of Resilience creates enough mana. Use tutors such as Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Worldly Tutor, Expedition Map, Crop Rotation, Elvish Reclaimer, and Finale of Devastation itself to assemble either the mana engine or the exact creature payoff exposed by legal search choices. Prioritize this route when combat damage can end the game immediately or when graveyard hate makes dredge recursion unreliable.

  • Reanimation conversion: Dread Return, Reanimate, and Animate Dead turn self-mill from Grisly Salvage, Mulch, Satyr Wayfinder, Stitcher's Supplier, dredge cards, or Bazaar of Baghdad into a battlefield payoff. Select only visible legal targets; high-impact targets are usually The Gitrog Monster, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Underrealm Lich, Skirge Familiar, Oracle of Mul Daya, or another engine creature already in the graveyard. Prioritize reanimation when commander tax is high, when a milled payoff is stronger than recasting from command zone, or when the reanimated permanent immediately stabilizes or closes.

Secondary Win Conditions

  • Combat fallback: Attack with The Gitrog Monster, Titania, Protector of Argoth tokens, Field of the Dead tokens, Tireless Tracker, Underrealm Lich, Lotleth Troll, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Grave-Troll, Dryad Arbor, and incidental creatures only when attacks preserve needed blockers or push a clock that matters. Do not sacrifice engine creatures into trades unless the visible exchange protects life total, commander access, or a decisive postcombat line.

  • Resource-lock fallback: Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Boseiju, Who Endures, and Bojuka Bog become win conditions when replayed through Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds. Use land interaction to remove a visible key land, graveyard, artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic-dependent plan; avoid spending recurring lands on low-impact targets before the recursion engine is established.

  • Attrition draw fallback: Sylvan Library, The One Ring, Tireless Tracker, Barren Moor, Tranquil Thicket, Nurturing Peatland, Life from the Loam, and The Gitrog Monster can win by burying opponents in cards. Choose this line when the table is trading resources, when life total can support the draw engine, and when a slower hand still has land drops and interaction.

Emergency Lines

  • Behind on life: Stabilize first with Glacial Chasm, Zuran Orb, Toxic Deluge, Darkblast, Assassin's Trophy, Abrupt Decay, Force of Vigor, Stinkweed Imp, and defensive creature trades. Sacrifice lands to Zuran Orb or maintain Glacial Chasm only when the visible damage clock justifies spending land infrastructure; recover afterward with Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds.

  • Behind on board: Use Toxic Deluge as the reset button when creature pressure beats incremental blocks, and preserve The Gitrog Monster recast mana if sweeping also removes your own engine. Use Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Force of Vigor, Boseiju, Who Endures, Strip Mine, Wasteland, and Ghost Quarter on permanents that stop recursion, lock combat, or threaten immediate loss.

  • Behind on cards or engines: Rebuild with Life from the Loam, Grisly Salvage, Mulch, Satyr Wayfinder, Stitcher's Supplier, Sylvan Library, The One Ring, Tireless Tracker, Tireless Provisioner, and land recursion before chasing a fragile combo. Tutor for the missing engine piece only when the visible board gives enough time to untap or execute safely.

  • Graveyard under attack: Pivot to battlefield mana and combat through Oracle of Mul Daya, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Field of the Dead, Finale of Devastation, and artifact mana. If an opponent presents graveyard hate, use Force of Vigor, Assassin's Trophy, Abrupt Decay, Boseiju, Who Endures, or Pithing Needle only when legal and visible; do not assume hidden graveyard access survives.

  • Win conditions removed: Recast The Gitrog Monster through commander tax when mana allows and the board does not punish tapping out. If Finale of Devastation, Titania, Protector of Argoth, or graveyard payoffs are unavailable, win by recurring lands, creating Field of the Dead tokens, attacking with surviving creatures, and using The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale or land destruction to slow opposing boards while rebuilding.

Resource Model

  • Life conversion: Treat life as a spendable but bounded resource for Sylvan Library, Reanimate, Toxic Deluge, The One Ring, Glacial Chasm, fetchlands, shockland sequencing with Overgrown Tomb, and combat setup. Spend life aggressively only when it produces an engine, prevents a larger visible loss, or converts directly into a decisive The Gitrog Monster, recursion, or Finale of Devastation turn.

  • Hand conversion: Keep hands that can turn cards into land drops, graveyard cards, or mana, because this deck often wins after discarding or milling its own resources. Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, Skirge Familiar, and Bazaar of Baghdad convert hand size into dredge access, black mana, or cleanup-step pressure; do not discard unique interaction or the only mana source unless the legal action clearly advances an active engine.

  • Mana conversion: Convert early mana into permanent engines before one-shot velocity. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, Exploration, Burgeoning, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Lotus Cobra, and Tireless Provisioner are best when they create extra land drops or repeated mana, not when they merely empty a weak hand.

  • Board conversion: Use creatures and permanents as engines first and attackers second. The Gitrog Monster, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Tireless Tracker, Tireless Provisioner, Titania, Protector of Argoth, and Underrealm Lich should be protected from low-value combat trades unless the visible board demands survival blocking.

  • Graveyard conversion: Treat the graveyard as a second hand only while legal recursion and replacement choices remain available. Life from the Loam, dredge cards, Dread Return, Reanimate, Animate Dead, Noxious Revival, Takenuma, Abandoned Mire, Barren Moor, Tranquil Thicket, and land-recursion permanents reward stocking the graveyard, but visible graveyard hate should shift decisions toward battlefield mana, tutors, and combat.

  • Exile conversion: Treat exile as mostly lost access unless a visible card says otherwise. Do not assume exiled dredgers, lands, or reanimation targets remain usable; if an opponent threatens exile effects, prefer committing the engine only when it immediately draws, dredges, recurs lands, or removes the hate piece.

  • Land and sacrifice conversion: Lands are cards, mana, sacrifice fodder, draw triggers, landfall triggers, and recursion fuel. Zuran Orb, Squandered Resources, Crop Rotation, Elvish Reclaimer, fetchlands, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Glacial Chasm, and The Gitrog Monster can spend lands, but land sacrifice is strongest when Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds is already active or immediately recoverable.

  • Tempo, information, and sideboard conversion: Spend tempo to set up only when opponents cannot present a faster visible kill; spend tutors such as Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Finale of Devastation, Expedition Map, and Crop Rotation on the missing engine, mana piece, or answer. Sideboard bullets convert narrow information into high-impact cards: Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, and Surgical Extraction for graveyard pressure, Collector Ouphe, Haywire Mite, and sideboard Force of Vigor for artifact/enchantment plans, Pithing Needle for activated abilities, Thoughtseize and Necromentia for known combo pieces, and Pernicious Deed for battlefield resets.

Mana Guide

  • Color priority: Secure black and green early, then scale into utility lands. Green enables Exploration, Burgeoning, Life from the Loam, Crop Rotation, Ramunap Excavator, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, and Oracle of Mul Daya; black enables Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Reanimate, Tortured Existence, Skirge Familiar, and interaction. Hands with only colorless or utility lands should mulligan unless they also contain Sol Ring, a signet/talisman line, or a legal land-search path.

  • Keep rule: Keep hands with at least two mana sources, at least one colored source, and either acceleration, land recursion, self-mill/dredge access, or a tutor. Strong keeps include a green source plus Exploration or Life from the Loam, a black source plus tutor and engine target, or a land-heavy hand with The Gitrog Monster access. Mulligan hands that cannot cast spells before turn three, cannot produce green or black, or rely on a single fragile utility land as their only mana.

  • Utility-land sequencing: Play fixing lands before narrow lands unless a specific legal line needs the utility land now. Command Tower, Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Llanowar Wastes, Twilight Mire, Blooming Marsh, Woodland Cemetery, Deathcap Glade, Darkbore Pathway, Forest, and Swamp cast spells; Bazaar of Baghdad, Bojuka Bog, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Glacial Chasm, Field of the Dead, Barren Moor, and Tranquil Thicket should be timed for their tactical function rather than treated as generic early fixing.

  • Land-drop timing: Play lands before draw effects when Lotus Cobra, Tireless Provisioner, Tireless Tracker, Field of the Dead, Oracle of Mul Daya, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Exploration, or Burgeoning rewards the land entering now. Delay the land drop until after Sylvan Library, The One Ring, Grisly Salvage, Mulch, tutor resolution, or dredge choices when the deck may reveal a better land, need a shuffle, or choose between Dakmor Salvage, fetchlands, cycling lands, or a protection land.

  • Recursion sequencing: Prefer fetchlands and sacrifice lands once recursion is online. Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Prismatic Vista, Fabled Passage, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Barren Moor, Tranquil Thicket, and Nurturing Peatland become repeatable resources with Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds; before recursion, do not spend them unless fixing, landfall, survival, or interaction requires it.

  • Big-mana sequencing: Assemble Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth plus Cabal Coffers, or creature count plus Gaea's Cradle, only after the deck can use the mana. Use big mana for The Gitrog Monster through commander tax, Finale of Devastation, multiple engine spells, or protected interaction windows; avoid tapping out into visible stack interaction or graveyard hate when waiting preserves a safer engine turn.

  • Tapped and replacement concern: Respect enters-tapped timing from lands such as Bojuka Bog, Barren Moor, Tranquil Thicket, and any runtime-reported tapped land. If card-reference metadata is missing for Bazaar of Baghdad, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Golgari Grave-Troll, or cleanup-step replacement prompts, do not invent mana, legality, or shortcut outcomes; follow the rules-engine legal actions and keep cleanup/dredge choices bounded by visible prompts.

Mulligan Guide

  • Strong keep: Keep hands with two or more mana sources, both colors or a clear path to both, and one engine or engine-finder. Examples: Forest, Swamp, Exploration, Life from the Loam, and a fetchland; Bayou, Sol Ring, Ramunap Excavator, and Crop Rotation; or Command Tower, Demonic Tutor, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and a plan to cast The Gitrog Monster on curve.

  • Medium keep: Keep slower hands when they develop mana and fill the graveyard without depending on one fragile card. Examples: Blooming Marsh, Darkbore Pathway, Satyr Wayfinder, Grisly Salvage, and Abrupt Decay; or Overgrown Tomb, Arcane Signet, Tireless Tracker, and Mulch. These hands need runtime awareness: if opponents show fast pressure or graveyard hate, spend tutors or interaction before durdling.

  • Risky keep: Keep land-heavy hands only when the lands are functional now or recursion is already present. Dakmor Salvage, Barren Moor, Tranquil Thicket, Life from the Loam, and The Gitrog Monster access is a plan; Bazaar of Baghdad, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Field of the Dead, and no colored spell access is not. Missing card-reference metadata for Bazaar of Baghdad, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, or cleanup-step prompts should make the pilot conservative, not speculative.

  • Automatic ship: Mulligan hands with no green source or green-finder, no black source or black-finder, one land and no Sol Ring, no castable spell before turn three, or only utility lands as mana. Ship hands that rely on Gaea's Cradle with no creature plan, Cabal Coffers without black access or Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, or graveyard-only action into visible pregame graveyard hate.

  • Matchup-dependent keep: Keep interaction-heavy hands when the opponent is visibly faster or combo-oriented. Thoughtseize is only sideboarded, but main-deck Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Force of Vigor, Veil of Summer, Toxic Deluge, and Bojuka Bog can justify a slower opener if they answer known pressure. Against attrition, prefer Sylvan Library, The One Ring, Tireless Tracker, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds over narrow removal.

  • Play/draw adjustment: On the play, favor Exploration, Burgeoning, Elvish Reclaimer, Expedition Map, Entomb, or Vampiric Tutor lines that establish the missing piece before opponents untap. On the draw, require more immediate interaction or self-contained mana because waiting through one extra opponent turn exposes The Gitrog Monster, dredgers, and land recursion to removal or exile.

  • Trap hand: Do not keep a hand just because it contains famous singleton cards. Sol Ring plus colorless utility lands and no colored source is not a deck hand; Skirge Familiar plus dredgers but no discard engine, black mana, or recursion setup is fragile; Glacial Chasm plus no land recursion can buy time but may strand development.

Turn Arc

  • Turn 1: Prioritize color access plus a permanent or tutor that shapes the next two turns. Best starts include Exploration with multiple lands, Burgeoning in multiplayer when extra land drops are likely, Sol Ring into Arcane Signet or Golgari Signet, Elvish Reclaimer, Stitcher's Supplier, Entomb for a known graveyard line, or Vampiric Tutor for the missing engine. Deviation: hold Crop Rotation unless it is fixing, protecting against a visible threat, finding Bojuka Bog, or setting up a guaranteed recursion line.

  • Turn 2: Convert setup into selection, ramp, or graveyard access. Preferred plays are Life from the Loam, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Satyr Wayfinder, Grisly Salvage, Mulch, Talisman of Resilience, Golgari Signet, Lotus Cobra, Sylvan Library, or Tortured Existence when creatures are available. Deviation: cast Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, or Force of Vigor only when the visible permanent threatens the engine, the commander, or an imminent kill.

  • Turn 3: Commit the first durable engine if the table cannot punish it immediately. Preferred plays are Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Tireless Tracker, or Tireless Provisioner with a land drop still available. Deviation: use Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Finale of Devastation, or Expedition Map to find the exact missing card rather than playing a redundant engine into known disruption.

  • Turns 4-5: Cast The Gitrog Monster when a land can be sacrificed or discarded profitably and the deck can still act after removal. Strong companion pieces are Life from the Loam, Dakmor Salvage, Zuran Orb, Squandered Resources, Skirge Familiar, Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Oblivion Crown, or land recursion. Deviation: if opponents represent graveyard exile, prioritize Veil of Summer, Noxious Revival, Boseiju, Who Endures, Assassin's Trophy, or a tutor for protection/removal before exposing the cleanup-dredge engine.

  • Late game: Turn lands into inevitability while respecting rules-engine prompts exactly. Loop fetchlands, cycling lands, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Nurturing Peatland, or Glacial Chasm only through visible legal recursion from Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds. Win through overwhelming mana, Finale of Devastation, Titania, Protector of Argoth, repeated commander value, or graveyard recursion with Dread Return, Reanimate, or Animate Dead; if cleanup-step or dredge prompts become ambiguous, choose bounded legal actions and avoid invented shortcut loops.

Card Roles

The Gitrog Monster is the command-zone engine and should be cast when at least one land sacrifice, discard outlet, dredger, or recursion piece converts the upkeep sacrifice and draw trigger into advantage. Do not expose it into open exile or graveyard hate unless waiting loses more value than commander-tax risk. Life from the Loam, Dakmor Salvage, discard outlets, Skirge Familiar, and land recursion are the deck's cleanup-step/dredge core; use exact rules-engine prompts and avoid shortcut loops unless each replacement and discard choice is legal and bounded.

The land-engine creatures and artifacts are the fair-game backbone. Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, and Conduit of Worlds make fetchlands, cycling lands, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Nurturing Peatland, and Glacial Chasm repeatable. Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Exploration, Burgeoning, and Manabond turn lands in hand into tempo, but they are weak without lands to deploy or graveyard access. Lotus Cobra, Tireless Provisioner, Tireless Tracker, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Zuran Orb, and Squandered Resources convert land movement into mana, clues, food/treasure, bodies, life, or burst resources.

The tutor and selection suite should find the missing class, not the flashiest card. Entomb, Crop Rotation, Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Finale of Devastation, Expedition Map, Grisly Salvage, Mulch, Satyr Wayfinder, and Stitcher's Supplier should be aimed at a current bottleneck: colored mana, dredger, discard outlet, recursion, protection, graveyard answer, or finisher. Reanimate, Animate Dead, Dread Return, Tortured Existence, Noxious Revival, and Takenuma, Abandoned Mire are recursion tools; spend them on engine restoration or a deterministic payoff, not low-impact value while graveyard hate is visible.

Interaction is defensive and engine-protective first. Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Boseiju, Who Endures, Force of Vigor, Toxic Deluge, Darkblast, Veil of Summer, Bojuka Bog, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, and sideboard bullets should answer cards that stop graveyards, exile lands, shut off activated abilities, or threaten lethal. Do not fire premium interaction at ordinary creatures unless survival, commander access, or combo timing requires it.

Card Hover Notes

The Gitrog Monster

  • Deck role: Commander registration and Main 1 copy, core commander engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; mechanic payoff; combo enabler; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: turns land cards put into your graveyard from anywhere into card draw, adds one land play on your turns, and anchors the Dakmor Salvage discard/dredge cleanup engine.
  • Timing: cast or recast when you can immediately sacrifice, discard, fetch, cycle, or replay a land; delay if tapping out leaves no Veil of Summer, Sylvan Safekeeper, Noxious Revival, or recast mana plan.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes an upkeep land sacrifice unless you sacrifice The Gitrog Monster; outputs one draw when one or more land cards go to your graveyard from anywhere.
  • Partners / packages: Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Zuran Orb, Squandered Resources, Crop Rotation, Elvish Reclaimer, Bazaar of Baghdad, Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Oblivion Crown, and Skirge Familiar.
  • Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Underrealm Lich for graveyard-heavy draw replacement and Titania, Protector of Argoth for land-to-graveyard payoff.
  • Failure modes: commander tax can trap the deck if Gitrog dies before drawing; graveyard exile can break Dakmor Salvage or Life from the Loam; repeated cleanup prompts must stay bounded by visible legal choices.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: against visible graveyard hate or exile removal, prefer protection, removal, or a fair land-recursion line before committing the commander.
  • Low-skill guidance: return Gitrog to the command zone by default unless a visible Reanimate, Animate Dead, or Dread Return line is cheaper and safe this turn.

Ramunap Excavator

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, core land-recursion creature.
  • Role type: recursion; engine piece; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: lets you play lands from your graveyard so sacrificed, cycled, fetched, and destroyed lands become repeatable resources.
  • Timing: deploy before your land play when the graveyard already contains a useful target such as Verdant Catacombs, Dakmor Salvage, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Nurturing Peatland, or Glacial Chasm.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes your normal or extra land plays; outputs battlefield access to graveyard land cards.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Exploration, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Zuran Orb, and Squandered Resources.
  • Role peers: Crucible of Worlds and the static land-play half of Conduit of Worlds.
  • Failure modes: does nothing without a land play and a useful graveyard land; creature removal can strand the sacrifice plan.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest against attrition and land-destruction exchanges; weaker into visible graveyard exile that can remove the target before you play it.
  • Low-skill guidance: play this before sacrificing utility lands, and do not trade it in combat unless blocking prevents lethal damage.

Oracle of Mul Daya

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, land-velocity role player.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: adds a land play and lets you play lands from the top of your library, converting library information into extra mana and landfall triggers.
  • Timing: cast before making land plays when your hand or revealed top card contains a playable land; delay if revealing the top card gives control opponents free information before you can profit.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes four mana and land-play permissions; outputs one additional land play each turn and public top-card information.
  • Partners / packages: Exploration, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Tireless Tracker, Tireless Provisioner, Lotus Cobra, Field of the Dead, and shuffle effects from Verdant Catacombs, Crop Rotation, and Expedition Map.
  • Role peers: Azusa, Lost but Seeking gives more land plays; Dryad of the Ilysian Grove adds fixing; Courser of Kruphix is not registered.
  • Failure modes: low impact without lands to play; revealed top card can expose tutors, interaction, or a planned dredge decision.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in midrange games where extra land drops matter; slow against fast combo if it does not find interaction or Gitrog mana.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast Oracle before your land drop when it can play an extra land, but do not replace a needed tutored draw with dredge just because Oracle reveals a land.

Azusa, Lost but Seeking

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, extra-land-drop engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: gives two additional land plays each turn, letting Life from the Loam and graveyard land access turn into rapid battlefield development.
  • Timing: cast when you have at least two lands ready in hand or graveyard, or when Life from the Loam will refill land cards this turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes three mana; outputs two additional land plays on each of your turns.
  • Partners / packages: Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Dakmor Salvage, Field of the Dead, Lotus Cobra, Tireless Tracker, and Tireless Provisioner.
  • Role peers: Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Exploration, and The Gitrog Monster's additional land play.
  • Failure modes: a 1/2 body dies easily and does little with an empty hand or empty graveyard.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent when opponents are not pressuring your life total; poor if the turn must be spent on Toxic Deluge, Abrupt Decay, or Assassin's Trophy.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not cast Azusa into an empty land hand; use her to make real land plays that help cast or recast The Gitrog Monster.

Dryad of the Ilysian Grove

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, fixing and land-velocity role player.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: adds a land play and makes lands you control every basic land type in addition to their other types, smoothing black-green requirements and improving Cabal Coffers.
  • Timing: cast when color fixing, an extra land play, or Cabal Coffers scaling matters more than holding up instant interaction.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes three mana; outputs one additional land play and basic-land-type fixing across your battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: Cabal Coffers, The Gitrog Monster, Field of the Dead, Lotus Cobra, Tireless Provisioner, Tireless Tracker, Barren Moor, Tranquil Thicket, and utility lands that otherwise do not produce colored mana.
  • Role peers: Oracle of Mul Daya and Azusa, Lost but Seeking overlap on extra land plays; Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth overlap on type fixing.
  • Failure modes: enchantment-creature removal can remove both fixing and land velocity; it can also improve opposing land-type synergies only if an effect affects all lands, which Dryad does not.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: valuable in mana-denial games; less urgent when you already have Command Tower, Bayou, and Overgrown Tomb.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Dryad to make commander-tax recasts easier, not as a random 2/4 attacker.

Lotus Cobra

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, landfall mana role player.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: turns each land entering under your control into one mana of any color, enabling burst turns with fetchlands, extra land plays, and land recursion.
  • Timing: cast before a turn with Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Prismatic Vista, Fabled Passage, Exploration, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, or Oracle of Mul Daya.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes two mana; outputs temporary mana on each landfall trigger.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Tireless Provisioner, Tireless Tracker, and Field of the Dead.
  • Role peers: Tireless Provisioner makes Treasure or Food from landfall; Squandered Resources converts sacrificed lands into mana.
  • Failure modes: dies before the landfall burst; the mana empties as steps and phases end.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong for racing combo or big mana; fragile against visible cheap removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Cobra only when you can make land drops soon, and spend the landfall mana on Gitrog setup or protection before passing.

Tireless Provisioner

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, landfall resource engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; mechanic payoff; lifegain/stabilization; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: turns land entries into Food for survival or Treasure for burst mana, making extra land-drop turns materially stronger.
  • Timing: deploy before a cluster of land entries from fetchlands, Life from the Loam, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Exploration, or graveyard land replay.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes three mana; outputs Food tokens with {2}, {T}, Sacrifice this token: You gain 3 life or Treasure tokens with {T}, Sacrifice this token: Add one mana of any color.
  • Mode map: choose Treasure when casting The Gitrog Monster, Finale of Devastation, Demonic Tutor plus follow-up, or sideboard hate matters; choose Food when visible combat or burn pressure makes life total the bottleneck.
  • Partners / packages: Lotus Cobra, Tireless Tracker, Field of the Dead, Zuran Orb, The Gitrog Monster, and land replay from Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds.
  • Role peers: Lotus Cobra gives immediate mana; Tireless Tracker gives delayed cards and counters.
  • Failure modes: Collector Ouphe stops activated abilities of Food and Treasure because they are artifacts; tokens are slow if you need an answer now.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: Treasure is best against combo and big mana races; Food is best when creature swarms or burn make survival urgent.
  • Low-skill guidance: default to Treasure unless life total is under visible pressure, and remember Food/Treasure abilities may be shut off by your own Collector Ouphe.

Tireless Tracker

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, fair landfall card engine.
  • Role type: engine payoff; card selection; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: creates Clue artifacts from land entries and grows when you sacrifice Clues, giving the deck a non-dredge card-advantage plan.
  • Timing: cast before making land drops when you can later spend {2} to sacrifice Clues; delay if the matchup demands immediate removal or Gitrog setup.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes three mana and later two generic mana per Clue; outputs Clue tokens, cards from Clue sacrifice, and +1/+1 counters on Tracker.
  • Partners / packages: Exploration, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, and Field of the Dead.
  • Role peers: Sylvan Library and The One Ring draw cards without landfall; Tireless Provisioner turns the same land entries into Food or Treasure.
  • Failure modes: slow against fast combo; Collector Ouphe stops Clue activated abilities because Clues are artifacts.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against midrange and removal-heavy tables; board out more often when graveyard combo demands Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, Surgical Extraction, or Thoughtseize.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Tracker when you can make land drops after it resolves, and do not spend all mana cracking Clues if Gitrog recast or removal is needed.

Sakura-Tribe Elder

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, ramp and stabilizing creature.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: searches for Forest or Swamp onto the battlefield tapped while giving the deck an early blocker and a creature card for graveyard/reanimation texture.
  • Timing: cast early for color fixing; sacrifice before damage if blocking would not matter or before your turn if you need the tapped basic available next turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: sacrifices itself; searches a basic land card, puts it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffles.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster does not draw from Sakura-Tribe Elder's creature sacrifice, but the fetched Forest or Swamp supports Gitrog mana; Tortured Existence, Dread Return, and Gaea's Cradle care about creature presence or graveyard bodies.
  • Role peers: Springbloom Druid, Satyr Wayfinder, Prismatic Vista, and Fabled Passage also find basic land access.
  • Failure modes: cannot find Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Dryad Arbor, or utility lands; the searched basic enters tapped.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good against aggro as a blocker and ramp spell; less important when hand already has stable Command Tower, Bayou, and Overgrown Tomb.
  • Low-skill guidance: use it to secure the missing color for The Gitrog Monster before chasing utility lands.

Springbloom Druid

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, ramp creature with land-sacrifice synergy.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: can sacrifice one land to search for up to two Forest and/or Swamp basic land cards onto the battlefield tapped, triggering The Gitrog Monster if he is active.
  • Timing: best after Gitrog resolves, or when sacrificing a replayable land is worth fixing and ramping; avoid if losing the land breaks your colored mana this turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: optional land sacrifice; searches up to two basic land cards, puts them onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffles.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Titania, Protector of Argoth, and Field of the Dead.
  • Role peers: Sakura-Tribe Elder fixes without sacrificing a land; Crop Rotation sacrifices a land for any land at instant speed.
  • Failure modes: weak when Forest and Swamp are exhausted or when the sacrificed land is your only black or green source.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good into slower games where tapped basics are acceptable; risky under fast pressure if the turn requires Toxic Deluge or instant removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not sacrifice your only functional colored source unless Gitrog draw, Titania token, or immediate fixing makes the exchange safe.

Elvish Reclaimer

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, utility land tutor creature.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mechanic enabler; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: turns an expendable land into the exact land needed for combo, survival, hate, big mana, or land denial.
  • Timing: activate after summoning sickness clears and when {2}, tapping Elvish Reclaimer, and sacrificing a land will not strand Gitrog recast or interaction mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: gets +2/+2 with three or more land cards in your graveyard; activation sacrifices a land and searches any land card onto the battlefield tapped.
  • Partners / packages: finds Dakmor Salvage, Bazaar of Baghdad, Bojuka Bog, Glacial Chasm, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Cabal Coffers, Gaea's Cradle, Field of the Dead, Strip Mine, Wasteland, or Ghost Quarter.
  • Role peers: Crop Rotation is instant and puts the land untapped if applicable; Expedition Map searches to hand without sacrificing a land.
  • Failure modes: summoning sickness, creature removal, and graveyard exile shrinking it below combat relevance.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: prioritize Bojuka Bog against graveyard engines, Glacial Chasm under lethal combat, and Strip Mine/Wasteland against visible problem lands.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the land that solves the current bottleneck, not the flashiest land name.

Sylvan Safekeeper

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, creature protection piece.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: sacrifices lands to give target creature you control shroud until end of turn, protecting Gitrog or a discard engine from targeted removal.
  • Timing: activate only in response to a targeted spell or ability, or before a turn where losing targetability is acceptable.
  • Inputs / outputs: sacrifices a land; target creature you control gains shroud until end of turn, which also stops your own later targeting of that creature.
  • Partners / packages: protects The Gitrog Monster, Skirge Familiar, Ramunap Excavator, Underrealm Lich, Titania, Protector of Argoth, and an Oblivion Crown enchanted creature; sacrificed lands pair with Life from the Loam, Crucible of Worlds, and Conduit of Worlds.
  • Role peers: Veil of Summer protects you and permanents from blue/black targeting; Noxious Revival recovers after a card reaches a graveyard.
  • Failure modes: does not stop sweepers, edicts, sacrifice effects, or non-targeting exile; shroud can block your own Animate Dead, Tortured Existence, or other targeting lines.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: high value against targeted removal; low value against visible Toxic Deluge-style sweepers or graveyard exile.
  • Low-skill guidance: sacrifice a land only for a creature that keeps the engine alive or prevents lethal, and remember shroud blocks your own targeting too.

Skirge Familiar

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, discard-to-mana engine.
  • Role type: combo enabler; discard outlet; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: converts cards in hand into black mana, letting dredge/discard turns generate mana while stocking the graveyard.
  • Timing: commit when you can discard immediately for mana or when a protected Gitrog turn is ready; avoid tapping out for a 4/3 flyer that dies before producing mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: discards any card to add {B}; flying body can attack only when engine use and blocking are irrelevant.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Grave-Troll, Dread Return, Reanimate, Animate Dead, Noxious Revival, and Finale of Devastation.
  • Role peers: Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, and Bazaar of Baghdad discard cards but do not make black mana.
  • Failure modes: empty hand, graveyard hate, and removal before the first discard can turn it into an expensive loss.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest in combo or big-mana races; risky into open creature removal unless Veil of Summer or Sylvan Safekeeper is live.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Skirge Familiar as a mana engine, not just a flyer; do not discard the only protection or recovery card unless the line wins or stabilizes now.

Putrid Imp

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, cheap discard outlet.
  • Role type: discard outlet; mechanic enabler; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: provides repeatable discard for dredgers, Dakmor Salvage, and cleanup-step hand sculpting at one black mana.
  • Timing: cast early when you need a discard outlet; activate when discarding creates Gitrog draw, dredge access, reanimation setup, or a relevant flying attack.
  • Inputs / outputs: discards a card to give Putrid Imp flying until end of turn; threshold makes it +1/+1 and unable to block with seven or more cards in your graveyard.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Darkblast, Dread Return, Reanimate, and Animate Dead.
  • Role peers: Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Oblivion Crown, Skirge Familiar, and Bazaar of Baghdad; Lotleth Troll only discards creature cards.
  • Failure modes: threshold can remove blocking ability; random discards into visible graveyard hate can lose key resources.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: valuable against slower decks and combo races; preserve it as an outlet against removal-heavy opponents.
  • Low-skill guidance: discard Dakmor Salvage or a dredger for a clear engine reason, not just to make a small flyer.

Noose Constrictor

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, discard outlet and defensive reach creature.
  • Role type: discard outlet; mechanic enabler; lifegain/stabilization; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: lets any card become instant-speed discard fuel while reach helps block flying attackers.
  • Timing: cast before a Gitrog or dredge turn; keep it untapped when its reach blocks a visible evasive clock.
  • Inputs / outputs: discards a card to give Noose Constrictor +1/+1 until end of turn; no mana is required for the discard activation.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Darkblast, Barren Moor, and Tranquil Thicket.
  • Role peers: Wild Mongrel also discards any card for +1/+1; Putrid Imp is cheaper but less defensive; Skirge Familiar makes black mana.
  • Failure modes: combat pump can tempt wasteful discards; does not regenerate or protect itself.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: better than Putrid Imp against flyers; worse than Skirge Familiar when the line needs black mana.
  • Low-skill guidance: keep Noose alive as a discard outlet unless blocking prevents lethal damage.

Wild Mongrel

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, discard outlet and combat body.
  • Role type: discard outlet; mechanic enabler; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: discards any card for engine setup while becoming a larger attacker or blocker and changing color for corner combat or protection text.
  • Timing: play early when you need a durable outlet; activate for Gitrog/dredge progress before using discards as combat tricks.
  • Inputs / outputs: discards a card; Wild Mongrel gets +1/+1 and becomes a color of your choice until end of turn.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Darkblast, Dread Return, and Tortured Existence.
  • Role peers: Noose Constrictor has reach; Putrid Imp costs one black; Oblivion Crown grants a similar discard ability to another creature.
  • Failure modes: discard-for-damage without Gitrog, dredge, or survival payoff can throw away tutors, protection, or land drops.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good in removal-light games where a two-mana outlet can survive; preserve it against decks using graveyard hate until a protected window appears.
  • Low-skill guidance: treat Wild Mongrel as an engine switch first and a combat trick second.

Lotleth Troll

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, creature-card discard outlet and resilient threat.
  • Role type: discard outlet; mechanic enabler; protection/evasion; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: discards creature cards for permanent +1/+1 counters while trample and regeneration make it a credible backup clock.
  • Timing: cast when you have creature cards to discard or need a blocker that can regenerate; do not choose it as the outlet for Dakmor Salvage because the ability requires a creature card.
  • Inputs / outputs: discards a creature card for a +1/+1 counter; {B} regenerates before a destruction event, tapping it, removing damage, and removing it from combat.
  • Partners / packages: discard targets include Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Underrealm Lich, and reanimation targets for Reanimate, Animate Dead, or Dread Return.
  • Role peers: Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Oblivion Crown, and Skirge Familiar discard broader card types.
  • Failure modes: cannot discard lands; regeneration does not stop exile, sacrifice, -X/-X, or bounce.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: useful against combat decks and removal that destroys; weaker when the engine needs to discard lands or noncreature cards.
  • Low-skill guidance: only use Lotleth Troll as a dredge outlet for creature cards, and leave black mana up if regeneration matters.

Oblivion Crown

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, Aura-based discard outlet.
  • Role type: discard outlet; combo enabler; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: gives any enchanted creature "Discard a card: This creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn," creating another outlet for Gitrog and dredge lines.
  • Timing: flash it in when the target creature is likely to survive or when immediate discard access matters; avoid enchanting a creature into open removal if losing both cards breaks the line.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs {1}{B}, has flash, enchants a creature, and grants a discard-for-pump activated ability.
  • Mode map: cast at instant speed to surprise-enable a discard line or combat pump; cast in main phase only when you need a stable outlet before cleanup or Gitrog triggers.
  • Partners / packages: best on The Gitrog Monster, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Skirge Familiar, Underrealm Lich, or an expendable creature protected by Sylvan Safekeeper.
  • Role peers: Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Skirge Familiar, and Bazaar of Baghdad are natural outlets without Aura risk.
  • Failure modes: removal of the enchanted creature strands the Aura; shroud from Sylvan Safekeeper can make future Aura targeting illegal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: better against tapped-out opponents; poor against visible instant-speed removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: attach it only when the discard ability will be used soon or the creature is safe enough to carry it.

Tortured Existence

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, creature recursion exchange engine.
  • Role type: recursion; discard outlet; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: converts a creature card in hand into the best creature card already in your graveyard, supporting dredger loops and engine restoration.
  • Timing: activate when both halves are present: a creature card to discard and a target creature card in your graveyard that improves the current turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {B} and discards a creature card; returns target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
  • Partners / packages: recurs The Gitrog Monster, Ramunap Excavator, Skirge Familiar, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Titania, Protector of Argoth, and Underrealm Lich.
  • Role peers: Takenuma, Abandoned Mire returns a creature or planeswalker card to hand; Dread Return, Reanimate, and Animate Dead put creatures onto the battlefield.
  • Failure modes: no creature in hand, no legal graveyard target, or active graveyard exile makes the activation poor.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against removal-heavy decks; risky against opponents holding visible graveyard hate.
  • Low-skill guidance: exchange creatures for a named engine piece, not for a random body that does not help cast or protect Gitrog.

Squandered Resources

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, burst land-sacrifice engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: sacrifices lands for mana of a type the sacrificed land could produce, converting land drops into burst mana and Gitrog triggers.
  • Timing: commit when the burst produces Gitrog, Finale of Devastation, protected recursion, or a lethal/stabilizing line; avoid early if it only sacrifices your mana base.
  • Inputs / outputs: sacrifices a land; adds one mana of a type that land could produce.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth.
  • Role peers: Zuran Orb sacrifices lands for life; Lotus Cobra and Tireless Provisioner make mana from land entries without sacrificing the land.
  • Failure modes: utility lands such as Bazaar of Baghdad, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, and Glacial Chasm may not produce mana under their own text unless another effect grants a type or ability.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent for decisive combo turns; dangerous against counterplay if sacrificing lands leaves no rebuild.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not sacrifice multiple lands unless Gitrog draw, Titania tokens, or land recursion is already available.

Exploration

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, early extra-land-drop engine.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: lets you play an additional land each turn, turning land-heavy hands and Life from the Loam into tempo.
  • Timing: strongest on turn one with multiple lands; still good before replaying fetchlands or cycling lands from graveyard.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes one green mana; outputs one additional land play on each of your turns.
  • Partners / packages: Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, The Gitrog Monster, Tireless Tracker, Tireless Provisioner, Lotus Cobra, and Field of the Dead.
  • Role peers: Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, and The Gitrog Monster's additional land play.
  • Failure modes: poor topdeck when hand and graveyard lack playable land cards.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent in openers against slower decks; weaker when the immediate need is Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, or Toxic Deluge.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast it before making land drops, but only keep hands with enough colored sources and action after the extra land.

Burgeoning

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, opponent-turn land deployment engine.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: puts land cards from your hand onto the battlefield when opponents play lands, accelerating Gitrog and landfall in multiplayer.
  • Timing: best early with several lands in hand; weak late after your hand is empty or opponents are not making land plays.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes one green mana; outputs battlefield land entries during opponent land-play triggers.
  • Partners / packages: Tireless Tracker, Tireless Provisioner, Lotus Cobra, Field of the Dead, The Gitrog Monster, Sylvan Library, and Life from the Loam.
  • Role peers: Exploration, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, and Dryad of the Ilysian Grove give land plays on your own turn.
  • Failure modes: does not play lands from graveyard and does nothing with no land cards in hand.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: stronger in multiplayer pods and slower tables; weaker in one-on-one or late-game topdeck states.
  • Low-skill guidance: only prioritize Burgeoning when your hand has land cards to put in; it does not replace normal black-green fixing.

Manabond

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, high-risk end-step land dump.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; engine piece; discard outlet.
  • Deck-specific job: can put all land cards from hand onto the battlefield at end step, then discard the rest of your hand, creating graveyard fuel and landfall bursts.
  • Timing: use when losing nonland cards is acceptable because The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Reanimate, Animate Dead, or land recursion converts the discard into progress.
  • Inputs / outputs: at your end step you may reveal your hand; if you do, all land cards go to battlefield and the rest of your hand is discarded.
  • Partners / packages: Life from the Loam, The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, Tireless Tracker, Tireless Provisioner, Lotus Cobra, Field of the Dead, Reanimate, and Dread Return.
  • Role peers: Exploration, Burgeoning, and Azusa, Lost but Seeking deploy extra lands without discarding the hand.
  • Failure modes: discarding Veil of Summer, Assassin's Trophy, Demonic Tutor, or Finale of Devastation too early can remove your best protection or payoff.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: avoid into visible graveyard hate unless the hand dump wins or stabilizes immediately.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not trigger Manabond just because it is offered; use it only when the discarded cards are useful in the graveyard or expendable.

Life from the Loam

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, core land recursion and dredge card.
  • Role type: recursion; mechanic enabler; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: returns up to three target land cards from your graveyard to your hand and provides dredge 3 for repeatable land access.
  • Timing: cast when at least one land target matters, and dredge when milling three plus returning Loam is better than the natural draw.
  • Inputs / outputs: targets up to three land cards in your graveyard; dredge 3 mills three cards and returns Life from the Loam from graveyard to hand instead of drawing.
  • Mode map: cast as a sorcery to refill land cards; replace a draw with dredge 3 only from the graveyard when the rules engine offers that replacement.
  • Partners / packages: Dakmor Salvage, Barren Moor, Tranquil Thicket, Nurturing Peatland, Verdant Catacombs, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, and Conduit of Worlds.
  • Role peers: Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, and Conduit of Worlds play lands from graveyard instead of returning them to hand.
  • Failure modes: graveyard exile, low library size, or replacing a needed tutored draw can make dredge wrong.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: central in attrition; under graveyard pressure, cast it for immediate land recovery before exposing more resources.
  • Low-skill guidance: dredge Loam only when you want graveyard velocity more than the next card draw.

Crop Rotation

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, instant land tutor with sacrifice cost.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mechanic enabler; interaction-removal; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: exchanges a land for the exact land needed now, putting it directly onto the battlefield.
  • Timing: use when the target immediately solves a problem or starts a protected line; avoid casting into likely counterspell pressure because the land sacrifice is an additional cost.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {G} and sacrifices a land as an additional cost; searches any land card onto the battlefield, then shuffles.
  • Partners / packages: target Dakmor Salvage for Gitrog dredge, Bojuka Bog for graveyards, Glacial Chasm for damage prevention, Cabal Coffers with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Gaea's Cradle with creatures, Field of the Dead for tokens, Strip Mine/Wasteland/Ghost Quarter for lands.
  • Role peers: Elvish Reclaimer repeats the effect tapped; Expedition Map searches to hand without sacrificing a land.
  • Failure modes: countered Crop Rotation loses the sacrificed land; wrong target can break colored mana or commander-tax planning.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: keep it up against graveyard decks for Bojuka Bog or against lethal combat for Glacial Chasm.
  • Low-skill guidance: name the land job before casting; do not sacrifice your only green or black source without a replacement plan.

Entomb

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, instant graveyard tutor.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mechanic enabler; recursion setup.
  • Deck-specific job: puts any chosen card from library into your graveyard, turning graveyard access into a toolbox.
  • Timing: cast at the end step before your turn or in response to a draw/dredge setup when the graveyard card can be used soon.
  • Inputs / outputs: searches library for a card, puts that card into your graveyard, then shuffles.
  • Partners / packages: choose Dakmor Salvage for Gitrog loops, Life from the Loam for land recursion, Stinkweed Imp/Golgari Thug/Golgari Grave-Troll/Darkblast for dredge, Dread Return for flashback access, or Titania, Protector of Argoth/Underrealm Lich/Skirge Familiar for Reanimate or Animate Dead.
  • Role peers: Vampiric Tutor puts a card on top; Demonic Tutor puts a card into hand.
  • Failure modes: graveyard exile can turn Entomb into card disadvantage; it does not put the card in hand.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong when graveyard is safe; avoid committing your only payoff into known graveyard hate.
  • Low-skill guidance: Entomb for the missing engine piece you can actually use, not for a famous target with no recursion.

Vampiric Tutor

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, instant topdeck tutor.
  • Role type: tutor/search; combo tutor; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: finds any missing card at instant speed and puts it on top, letting the next draw or draw engine access it.
  • Timing: usually cast on the opponent end step or before a draw you will not replace with dredge; avoid if Underrealm Lich or a dredge choice will prevent drawing the tutored card.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {B} and 2 life; searches for a card, shuffles, then puts that card on top.
  • Partners / packages: targets include The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Crop Rotation, Demonic Tutor, Veil of Summer, Assassin's Trophy, Toxic Deluge, Finale of Devastation, or Glacial Chasm.
  • Role peers: Demonic Tutor puts the card in hand at sorcery speed; Worldly Tutor is limited to creature cards.
  • Failure modes: life loss matters against burn and combat; shuffling, milling, or dredging before drawing can lose the tutored card.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong for finding Bojuka Bog access, removal, or combo pieces; risky when low life makes 2 life meaningful.
  • Low-skill guidance: after Vampiric Tutor, take the natural draw unless you intentionally want to mill or replace it.

Demonic Tutor

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, unrestricted hand tutor.
  • Role type: tutor/search; combo tutor; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: puts the exact missing card into hand without exposing it to topdeck disruption.
  • Timing: cast when you can use the target before opponents punish the tempo loss, or when it finds protection before committing Gitrog.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {1}{B}; searches your library for a card, puts it into your hand, then shuffles.
  • Partners / packages: choose Dakmor Salvage or Life from the Loam for engine setup, Putrid Imp/Noose Constrictor/Wild Mongrel/Skirge Familiar for discard access, Veil of Summer or Sylvan Safekeeper for protection, Finale of Devastation for payoff, and Toxic Deluge for survival.
  • Role peers: Vampiric Tutor is instant but topdeck and costs life; Finale of Devastation and Green Sun's Zenith are creature-limited.
  • Failure modes: tutoring without a clear bottleneck can waste the best selection spell.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: against fast combo, search interaction or a faster deterministic line; against aggro, search Toxic Deluge, Glacial Chasm, or Zuran Orb when survival is at risk.
  • Low-skill guidance: identify whether the missing piece is mana, outlet, commander access, protection, answer, or finisher before choosing.

Green Sun's Zenith

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, green creature tutor.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: converts mana into the best green creature for the current bottleneck and puts it directly onto the battlefield.
  • Timing: cast early for setup or later for a land engine, landfall payoff, or Titania pressure; do not cast for a creature that does not solve the turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {X}{G}; searches for a green creature card with mana value X or less, puts it onto the battlefield, shuffles, then shuffles Green Sun's Zenith into its owner's library.
  • Partners / packages: targets include Dryad Arbor if the engine exposes it as a legal green creature at X=0, Elvish Reclaimer, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Lotus Cobra, Ramunap Excavator, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Oracle of Mul Daya, Tireless Provisioner, Tireless Tracker, and Titania, Protector of Argoth.
  • Role peers: Finale of Devastation searches library and/or graveyard for a creature; Worldly Tutor puts a creature on top.
  • Failure modes: Card Reference omits Dryad Arbor's color indicator, so the X=0 line requires a visible legal target prompt; non-green creatures such as Skirge Familiar are not legal targets.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: choose Collector Ouphe only from sideboard games where artifact activated abilities matter and your own artifacts can be spared.
  • Low-skill guidance: use the X value to get the cheapest creature that fixes the current problem, not the largest creature by habit.

Worldly Tutor

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, instant creature topdeck tutor.
  • Role type: tutor/search; card selection; combo tutor.
  • Deck-specific job: finds the creature that completes the engine or stabilizes the board, then sets up the next draw.
  • Timing: cast before a draw step, The One Ring activation, Clue draw, or other natural draw; avoid replacing that draw with dredge unless you intentionally do not need the tutored creature.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {G}; searches for a creature card, reveals it, shuffles, then puts it on top.
  • Partners / packages: targets include The Gitrog Monster, Skirge Familiar, Ramunap Excavator, Elvish Reclaimer, Oracle of Mul Daya, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Underrealm Lich, and sideboard Endurance or Collector Ouphe.
  • Role peers: Green Sun's Zenith puts green creatures onto the battlefield; Finale of Devastation can access library or graveyard.
  • Failure modes: dredge, mill, or shuffle before drawing can lose the selected creature.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: find Endurance against graveyard pressure after boarding, or Ramunap Excavator against removal-heavy attrition.
  • Low-skill guidance: after Worldly Tutor, draw the creature unless the game state clearly requires dredging instead.

Finale of Devastation

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, creature tutor and mana-sink finisher.
  • Role type: tutor/search; combo tutor; reach/finisher; recursion.
  • Deck-specific job: finds a creature from library and/or graveyard and can turn high mana into a lethal team pump with haste when X is 10 or more.
  • Timing: use small X for missing engine creatures only when that creature changes the game; preserve for X>=10 when Cabal Coffers, Gaea's Cradle, Squandered Resources, Lotus Cobra, or Treasures can create a finishing attack.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {X}{G}{G}; searches library and/or graveyard for a creature card with mana value X or less and puts it onto the battlefield; if X is 10 or more, creatures you control get +X/+X and haste until end of turn.
  • Mode map: setup mode finds Ramunap Excavator, Skirge Familiar, Underrealm Lich, or The Gitrog Monster; finisher mode uses X>=10 to pump existing creatures and haste them.
  • Partners / packages: Cabal Coffers plus Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Gaea's Cradle with creature count, Field of the Dead Zombies, Titania, Protector of Argoth Elementals, and Tireless Provisioner Treasures.
  • Role peers: Green Sun's Zenith is cheaper for green creatures; Dread Return, Reanimate, and Animate Dead are narrower graveyard creature access.
  • Failure modes: X too small may spend the deck's cleanest closer for a replaceable body; graveyard hate can remove a planned target.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: prioritize finishing when opponents are tapped low or shields are down; use setup mode if survival or Gitrog access is the immediate bottleneck.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not call Finale lethal unless the engine shows enough mana, legal target, attackers, and combat damage.

Grisly Salvage

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, instant selection and graveyard setup.
  • Role type: card selection; mechanic enabler; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: digs five cards for a creature or land while putting the rest into the graveyard for dredge, Loam, and reanimation.
  • Timing: cast when both hand selection and graveyard stocking matter, often before a turn that needs a land, outlet creature, or Gitrog setup.
  • Inputs / outputs: reveals top five cards; you may put a creature or land card from among them into hand; the rest go to your graveyard.
  • Partners / packages: finds Dakmor Salvage, Bojuka Bog, Glacial Chasm, The Gitrog Monster, Ramunap Excavator, Skirge Familiar, Underrealm Lich, Stinkweed Imp, and Golgari Grave-Troll.
  • Role peers: Mulch puts all revealed lands into hand; Satyr Wayfinder does a smaller version attached to a creature.
  • Failure modes: cannot take enchantments, artifacts, instants, or sorceries; feeding visible graveyard hate can make the graveyard output a liability.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong before reanimation or land-recursion turns; risky when an opponent can immediately exile your graveyard.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the card that fixes the next turn's missing piece, and remember the nonchosen cards are intentionally going to the graveyard.

Mulch

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, land refill and graveyard setup.
  • Role type: card selection; mechanic enabler; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: reveals four cards, puts all revealed land cards into hand, and puts the rest into the graveyard for recursion or reanimation.
  • Timing: cast before extra land-drop turns or when you need land cards for Exploration, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Manabond, or Gitrog upkeep.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes {1}{G} at sorcery speed; outputs revealed land cards to hand and nonland cards to graveyard.
  • Partners / packages: Life from the Loam, Exploration, Burgeoning, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, and Conduit of Worlds.
  • Role peers: Grisly Salvage can choose a creature or land at instant speed; Satyr Wayfinder provides a body and one land selection.
  • Failure modes: can reveal no land cards; sorcery speed prevents holding up Abrupt Decay, Crop Rotation, or Veil of Summer.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good in slower land-engine games; cuttable against known single-card combo when Thoughtseize, Necromentia, Pithing Needle, or Surgical Extraction is required.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast Mulch when you can use the land cards soon; do not mill into known graveyard hate for no payoff.

Satyr Wayfinder

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, setup creature and land selector.
  • Role type: card selection; engine fuel/material; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: finds a land from the top four while stocking the graveyard and leaving a creature body for blocking, Dread Return, Tortured Existence, or Gaea's Cradle.
  • Timing: cast early when a land drop or graveyard fuel matters; later, use it when a body plus mill is better than a pure tutor.
  • Inputs / outputs: reveals top four cards; may put one land card from among them into hand; the rest go to graveyard.
  • Partners / packages: finds Dakmor Salvage, Bojuka Bog, Boseiju, Who Endures, Glacial Chasm, Field of the Dead, or fixing lands; works with Tortured Existence, Dread Return, Reanimate, and Animate Dead.
  • Role peers: Mulch can put multiple lands into hand; Grisly Salvage can choose a creature or land.
  • Failure modes: may miss on land and mills key spells without immediate recursion.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: useful against aggro as an early blocker; weaker against graveyard hate if the mill cannot be converted immediately.
  • Low-skill guidance: take the land that fixes your next spell or Gitrog recast before taking a fancy utility land.

Stitcher's Supplier

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, one-mana self-mill creature.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: mills three on entry and three on death, rapidly stocking dredgers, lands, and reanimation targets.
  • Timing: cast early when graveyard access is beneficial, or before sacrifice/blocking lines that can use the death trigger.
  • Inputs / outputs: mills three cards when it enters and mills three cards when it dies.
  • Partners / packages: Life from the Loam, Dakmor Salvage, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Darkblast, Dread Return, Reanimate, Animate Dead, and Tortured Existence.
  • Role peers: Satyr Wayfinder mills while selecting a land; Grisly Salvage selects a creature or land at instant speed.
  • Failure modes: can mill interaction or tutors before you can recover them; poor into immediate graveyard exile.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good against removal-heavy and slow decks; risky against opponents with visible graveyard-exile permanents or graveyard-trigger punishers.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Supplier to stock a graveyard plan, not as a random one-mana attacker.

Stinkweed Imp

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, dredger and defensive flyer.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; interaction-removal; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: provides dredge 5 for graveyard volume and discourages attacks because creatures it damages in combat are destroyed.
  • Timing: put it in the graveyard before draw engines when dredge volume matters; cast it when a flying blocker is needed.
  • Inputs / outputs: dredge 5 mills five cards and returns Stinkweed Imp from graveyard to hand instead of drawing; combat damage to a creature destroys that creature.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Skirge Familiar, Bazaar of Baghdad, Tortured Existence, Dread Return, and Reanimate.
  • Role peers: Golgari Grave-Troll dredges 6; Golgari Thug dredges 4 and stacks a creature on death; Darkblast dredges 3 with removal text.
  • Failure modes: dredging can mill needed topdeck tutors or low-library states; the 1/2 body dies to many small removal effects.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against creature combat and flyers; less useful against spell combo unless it fuels the engine.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose dredge 5 only when graveyard volume is better than the natural draw.

Golgari Thug

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, medium dredger and creature-topdeck recursion.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; recursion; engine fuel/material.
  • Deck-specific job: dredge 4 fuels the graveyard, and its death trigger can put a target creature card from your graveyard on top of your library.
  • Timing: use dredge when you need graveyard volume; cast or trade it when stacking a specific creature for the next draw is worth losing the body.
  • Inputs / outputs: dredge 4 mills four cards and returns Golgari Thug from graveyard to hand; death trigger targets a creature card in your graveyard and puts it on top.
  • Partners / packages: topdeck targets include The Gitrog Monster, Ramunap Excavator, Skirge Familiar, Underrealm Lich, Titania, Protector of Argoth, and sideboard Endurance or Collector Ouphe.
  • Role peers: Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Grave-Troll, Darkblast, and Dakmor Salvage provide other dredge sizes.
  • Failure modes: death trigger can conflict with a planned dredge or tutored top card.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: useful against attrition and removal-heavy decks; awkward against graveyard exile that removes the target before the trigger resolves.
  • Low-skill guidance: if you put a creature on top, take the next natural draw unless dredging is intentionally more important.

Golgari Grave-Troll

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, high-volume dredger and validation-risk singleton.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; threat/clock; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: dredge 6 gives the deck its largest graveyard burst, and it can become a large creature based on creature cards in your graveyard.
  • Timing: use only through visible legal dredge prompts; cast when graveyard creature count makes it a meaningful body and mana is not needed for Gitrog protection.
  • Inputs / outputs: enters with a +1/+1 counter for each creature card in your graveyard; dredge 6 mills six cards and returns it from graveyard to hand; {1}, remove a +1/+1 counter regenerates it before destruction.
  • Partners / packages: Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Skirge Familiar, Bazaar of Baghdad, Dread Return, Reanimate, and Animate Dead.
  • Role peers: Stinkweed Imp dredges 5 with defensive text; Golgari Thug dredges 4 with death recursion.
  • Failure modes: deck metadata flags Commander legality/support validation for Golgari Grave-Troll; regeneration does not stop exile, sacrifice, bounce, or -X/-X.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: powerful when graveyard volume is safe; dangerous into visible graveyard hate or low-library states.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not dredge 6 automatically; confirm the graveyard plan is safe and the library can afford the mill.

Darkblast

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, repeatable small-creature interaction and dredger.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: gives target creature -1/-1 until end of turn and can dredge back for repeated use while fueling the graveyard.
  • Timing: cast when -1/-1 kills or materially changes combat; dredge when repeated access matters more than the natural draw.
  • Inputs / outputs: targets a creature for -1/-1 until end of turn; dredge 3 mills three cards and returns Darkblast from graveyard to hand instead of drawing.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Life from the Loam, and discard outlets Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Skirge Familiar.
  • Role peers: Toxic Deluge handles wide/larger boards; Abrupt Decay and Assassin's Trophy answer broader permanent classes.
  • Failure modes: -1/-1 is not damage and may not kill larger creatures; repeated dredge can skip needed draws.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best against mana creatures, small commanders, and utility creatures; poor against artifact/enchantment hate.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Darkblast on creatures it can actually kill or shrink into a losing combat, not as generic removal.

Dread Return

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, graveyard recursion payoff.
  • Role type: recursion; combo enabler; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: returns a target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield, with flashback by sacrificing three creatures.
  • Timing: cast for a decisive engine creature or finisher; flash back only when the three sacrificed creatures are less important than the returned target.
  • Inputs / outputs: sorcery returns target creature card from your graveyard to battlefield; flashback cost sacrifices three creatures and exiles Dread Return after it resolves from graveyard.
  • Mode map: hand-cast mode costs {2}{B}{B} and preserves your board; flashback mode uses graveyard access and creature sacrifices when mana is constrained or Dread Return is milled.
  • Partners / packages: targets include The Gitrog Monster, Skirge Familiar, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Underrealm Lich, Oracle of Mul Daya, and Ramunap Excavator; fodder can include Stitcher's Supplier, Satyr Wayfinder, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Dryad Arbor, and Field of the Dead Zombies.
  • Role peers: Reanimate is cheaper but costs life; Animate Dead is Aura-dependent; Finale of Devastation can search graveyard with enough mana.
  • Failure modes: graveyard exile before resolution, insufficient creatures for flashback, or sacrificing needed outlets can break the engine.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong after self-mill; weaker into exile-heavy opponents.
  • Low-skill guidance: reanimate a card that changes the current game state, usually Gitrog, Skirge Familiar, Titania, Underrealm Lich, or Ramunap Excavator.

Reanimate

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, cheap one-shot reanimation.
  • Role type: recursion; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: puts a target creature card from any graveyard onto the battlefield under your control at life cost.
  • Timing: cast when the target's mana value life loss is safe and the creature immediately advances engine, survival, or pressure.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {B}; targets a creature card in a graveyard; you lose life equal to that card's mana value after it enters under your control.
  • Partners / packages: common targets are The Gitrog Monster, Skirge Familiar, Underrealm Lich, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Oracle of Mul Daya, Ramunap Excavator, or an opponent's high-impact creature if visible and legal.
  • Role peers: Animate Dead is cheaper on life but vulnerable to enchantment removal; Dread Return can be flashbacked.
  • Failure modes: life loss can be lethal; target exile in response fizzles the spell.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent after Entomb, Grisly Salvage, Stitcher's Supplier, or dredge; dangerous against burn or aggro when life is low.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not Reanimate a large mana-value creature if the life loss puts you dead on board.

Animate Dead

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, Aura reanimation.
  • Role type: recursion; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: enchants a creature card in a graveyard, returns it to the battlefield under your control, and keeps it tied to Animate Dead.
  • Timing: cast when enchantment removal risk is acceptable or the returned creature produces value immediately.
  • Inputs / outputs: initially enchants a creature card in a graveyard; returns that card, attaches to it, gives it -1/-0, and if Animate Dead leaves the battlefield that creature's controller sacrifices it.
  • Partners / packages: targets include The Gitrog Monster, Skirge Familiar, Underrealm Lich, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Ramunap Excavator, Oracle of Mul Daya, and opponent graveyard creatures.
  • Role peers: Reanimate is not Aura-dependent but costs life; Dread Return uses more mana or sacrifices.
  • Failure modes: enchantment removal kills the reanimated creature by the Aura trigger; graveyard exile can remove the target before resolution.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: weaker against decks with visible artifact/enchantment removal; strong when reanimating an ETB or immediate engine piece.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose a target that matters even if opponents remove Animate Dead soon.

Noxious Revival

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, graveyard-to-top protection and disruption.
  • Role type: recursion; protection/evasion; card selection; hate piece.
  • Deck-specific job: puts a target card from a graveyard on top of its owner's library, saving your key card or disrupting an opponent's graveyard plan.
  • Timing: use before a key card is exiled, before your draw when you want the card, or on an opponent's graveyard card before they can recur it.
  • Inputs / outputs: targets a card in a graveyard; puts it on top of its owner's library; {G/P} can be paid with {G} or 2 life.
  • Partners / packages: recovers The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Finale of Devastation, Veil of Summer, Crop Rotation, or Toxic Deluge.
  • Role peers: Golgari Thug puts creature cards from your graveyard on top; Takenuma, Abandoned Mire returns a creature or planeswalker to hand.
  • Failure modes: topdeck recovery conflicts with dredge or Underrealm replacement; 2 life matters under pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: use against graveyard exile windows or to place a card above an opponent's next draw when that delays their line.
  • Low-skill guidance: after putting your own card on top, draw it naturally unless dredging is deliberately better.

Veil of Summer

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, protection and stack-adjacent shield.
  • Role type: protection/evasion; interaction-stack.
  • Deck-specific job: protects your spells from being countered this turn and gives you and permanents you control hexproof from blue and black until end of turn; draws a card if an opponent has cast a blue or black spell this turn.
  • Timing: hold for a decisive Gitrog, tutor, reanimation, or engine turn against visible blue or black interaction.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {G}; may draw a card based on opponent spell history; creates temporary counter-prevention and blue/black hexproof.
  • Partners / packages: protects The Gitrog Monster, Skirge Familiar, Demonic Tutor, Finale of Devastation, Reanimate, Animate Dead, Squandered Resources, and land-recursion engines from applicable interaction.
  • Role peers: Sylvan Safekeeper protects a creature by sacrificing a land; Noxious Revival recovers a card after it reaches the graveyard.
  • Failure modes: does not stop nonblue/nonblack removal, sweepers, sacrifice effects, or resolved graveyard hate.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: high priority against control or black removal; low value against creature swarms without blue/black interaction.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not cast Veil just to cycle; save it for a blue or black spell window or a decisive uncounterable turn.

Assassin's Trophy

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, broad instant-speed permanent removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys any target permanent an opponent controls, answering hate pieces, lethal threats, problem lands, and engines at the cost of giving a possible basic land.
  • Timing: use when the target stops Gitrog, graveyard recursion, land plays, or presents imminent loss; avoid spending it on low-impact permanents.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {B}{G}; destroys target permanent an opponent controls; that permanent's controller may search for a basic land card onto the battlefield.
  • Partners / packages: complements Abrupt Decay, Force of Vigor, Boseiju, Who Endures, Toxic Deluge, Strip Mine, Wasteland, and Ghost Quarter.
  • Role peers: Abrupt Decay is narrower but uncounterable; Boseiju, Who Endures hits artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land as a channel ability.
  • Failure modes: ramping the opponent can matter; cannot target your own permanent.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: prioritize graveyard hate, activated lock pieces, lethal commanders, or high-impact lands over generic value cards.
  • Low-skill guidance: spend Trophy on the card that blocks your engine or kills you, not the first legal target.

Abrupt Decay

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, efficient uncounterable small-permanent removal.
  • Role type: interaction-removal.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target nonland permanent with mana value 3 or less, especially cheap hate pieces and early engines.
  • Timing: hold for permanent-based graveyard hate, activated-ability blockers, early pressure that changes the clock, or protection shields that block Gitrog.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {B}{G}; cannot be countered; destroys a target nonland permanent with mana value 3 or less.
  • Partners / packages: complements Assassin's Trophy, Force of Vigor, Boseiju, Who Endures, Toxic Deluge, and sideboard Haywire Mite or Pernicious Deed.
  • Role peers: Assassin's Trophy hits any opponent permanent but ramps them; Force of Vigor hits up to two artifacts/enchantments.
  • Failure modes: cannot hit lands, mana value 4+ permanents, or spells on the stack.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against cheap graveyard hate, artifact/enchantment locks, and fast utility creatures; weak against large threats.
  • Low-skill guidance: check mana value and nonland status before relying on Abrupt Decay as your answer.

Force of Vigor

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy and Sideboard 1 copy, artifact/enchantment answer and sideboard reinforcement.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys up to two target artifacts and/or enchantments, protecting Gitrog loops from hate and slowing artifact/enchantment engines.
  • Timing: on an opponent's turn, pitch a green card only when the targets are worth the card disadvantage; hard-cast when mana is available and the line can wait.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs {2}{G}{G}, or if it is not your turn you may exile a green card from your hand rather than pay; destroys up to two target artifacts and/or enchantments.
  • Mode map: hard-cast mode preserves hand resources; alternate-cost mode trades a green card for tempo when a hate piece or fast artifact/enchantment plan must die now.
  • Partners / packages: answers artifacts/enchantments that block The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Zuran Orb, Expedition Map, or Conduit of Worlds; green pitch candidates must not be your only Life from the Loam, Crop Rotation, Veil of Summer, or engine creature.
  • Role peers: Boseiju, Who Endures, Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, sideboard Haywire Mite, and Pernicious Deed.
  • Failure modes: cannot hit creatures unless they are artifacts or enchantments; pitching the wrong green card can remove your engine.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: bring the sideboard copy against artifact/enchantment prison or hate; avoid overboarding if the opponent is mostly creatures or spells.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Force for cards that stop the deck, not for minor mana rocks unless slowing those rocks is the matchup plan.

Toxic Deluge

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, scalable creature sweeper.
  • Role type: interaction-sweeper; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: pays life so each creature gets -X/-X until end of turn, clearing boards that combat and spot removal cannot handle.
  • Timing: cast when the life payment plus losing your own creatures is better than the visible combat clock; avoid if it kills your only discard outlet or land engine without stabilizing.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {2}{B} and X life as an additional cost; all creatures get -X/-X until end of turn.
  • Partners / packages: rebuild with The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Dread Return, Reanimate, and Animate Dead.
  • Role peers: sideboard Pernicious Deed resets Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, Exploration, Burgeoning, Manabond, Tortured Existence, Oblivion Crown, and creature boards by mana value; Darkblast handles small individual creatures.
  • Failure modes: -X/-X kills your creatures and bypasses regeneration if toughness reaches 0 or less; life payment can put you in lethal range.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best against creature swarms and token pressure; weak against spell combo or noncreature lock pieces.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose X to kill the important opposing creatures while preserving your life total and any engine creature you truly need.

Sylvan Library

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, draw-step selection engine.
  • Role type: card selection; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: manipulates draw steps, adds cards at life cost, and interacts with dredge decisions in a way that must be chosen carefully.
  • Timing: play early in fair matchups when life total is stable; be cautious against pressure or burn where paying life is dangerous.
  • Inputs / outputs: at your draw step you may draw two additional cards; if you do, choose two cards drawn this turn and for each pay 4 life or put it on top.
  • Partners / packages: Life from the Loam, Dakmor Salvage, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Darkblast, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, and shuffle effects from fetchlands or tutors.
  • Role peers: The One Ring draws cards with burden counters; Tireless Tracker draws through Clue sacrifice.
  • Failure modes: dredge replacements can change what was actually drawn; paying 8 life recklessly loses races.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent versus attrition and control; cuttable against fast creature pressure when Pernicious Deed, Endurance, or Haywire Mite matters more.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not pay 4 life per extra card unless the card immediately advances Gitrog, protection, removal, or survival.

The One Ring

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, artifact draw engine and temporary protection.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: buys a protected turn if cast and then converts burden counters into increasing card draw.
  • Timing: cast when protection from everything until your next turn matters or when the draw engine will outpace burden life loss.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs four generic mana; if cast, gives you protection from everything until your next turn; taps to put a burden counter on it, then draw a card for each burden counter; upkeep life loss equals burden counters.
  • Partners / packages: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Noxious Revival, and Tireless Provisioner Food.
  • Role peers: Sylvan Library filters draw steps at life cost; Tireless Tracker turns landfall into Clues.
  • Failure modes: Collector Ouphe stops The One Ring's activated ability; burden counters can make low-life games unwinnable.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against combat alpha strikes when cast protection matters; slow against artifact hate or combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: count burden life loss before activating, and do not board in Collector Ouphe while relying on The One Ring.

Sol Ring

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, colorless acceleration artifact.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: accelerates generic costs, artifact sequences, commander recasts, and large Finale of Devastation turns, but does not produce black or green.
  • Timing: cast early when you also have or can find colored mana; avoid keeping hands where Sol Ring is the only functional mana plan.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs {1}; taps to add {C}{C}.
  • Partners / packages: helps cast The Gitrog Monster, The One Ring, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Expedition Map, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, and generic portions of Finale of Devastation.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, and Talisman of Resilience provide black/green access.
  • Failure modes: cannot pay colored costs for Life from the Loam, Entomb, Demonic Tutor, Abrupt Decay, or Gitrog's colored mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: explosive in openers; poor when Collector Ouphe is boarded in or opposing artifact hate is visible.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Sol Ring to accelerate, but still prioritize a real black or green source for the commander plan.

Arcane Signet

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, colored mana artifact.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for black or green in The Gitrog Monster's color identity and helps cast the commander through tax.
  • Timing: cast early unless the turn must hold up Crop Rotation, Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, or Veil of Summer.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs two generic mana; taps for one mana of any color in your commander's color identity.
  • Partners / packages: supports The Gitrog Monster, Demonic Tutor, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Toxic Deluge, Finale of Devastation, and sideboard Thoughtseize or Necromentia.
  • Role peers: Golgari Signet filters one mana into {B}{G}; Talisman of Resilience makes {B} or {G} with 1 damage.
  • Failure modes: shut off by Collector Ouphe; vulnerable to artifact removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: keep in default engine builds; consider cutting when boarding into Collector Ouphe, Haywire Mite, Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, and Pernicious Deed against artifact/enchantment prison.
  • Low-skill guidance: this fixes commander colors, so value it more than Sol Ring in hands missing black or green.

Golgari Signet

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, black-green filter artifact.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: converts one available mana into {B}{G}, helping cast Gitrog, tutors, and two-color interaction.
  • Timing: cast early when you have a spare mana source to activate it on later turns; do not rely on it as standalone mana.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs two generic mana; {1}, {T} adds {B}{G}.
  • Partners / packages: supports The Gitrog Monster, Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Demonic Tutor, Toxic Deluge, Finale of Devastation, and Pernicious Deed.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet taps without input mana; Talisman of Resilience taps immediately but may cost life for colored mana.
  • Failure modes: cannot activate without another mana; Collector Ouphe stops the activated ability.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: useful for normal acceleration; weaker in sideboard plans centered on Collector Ouphe.
  • Low-skill guidance: make sure you have another mana source before counting Golgari Signet as colored access.

Talisman of Resilience

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, flexible mana artifact.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: produces {C} safely or black/green at the cost of 1 damage, giving early access to both commander colors.
  • Timing: cast early; use colored mode when the spell or commander-tax plan requires it, and colorless mode when life total matters.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs two generic mana; taps for {C}, or taps for {B} or {G} and deals 1 damage to you.
  • Partners / packages: casts Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Life from the Loam, Crop Rotation, Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, and commander recasts.
  • Role peers: Arcane Signet fixes without damage; Golgari Signet produces both colors but needs an input mana.
  • Failure modes: repeated pain matters against burn and creature pressure; stopped by Collector Ouphe.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: use carefully when Sylvan Library, fetchlands, Overgrown Tomb, Reanimate, The One Ring, or Toxic Deluge already pressure life.
  • Low-skill guidance: take 1 damage only when black or green mana changes the current turn.

Crucible of Worlds

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, core land-recursion artifact.
  • Role type: recursion; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: lets you play lands from your graveyard, turning fetchlands, sacrifice lands, cycling lands, and survival lands into recurring resources.
  • Timing: cast before your land play when the graveyard contains a land you want to use now or when future sacrifices are planned.
  • Inputs / outputs: consumes three generic mana and land-play permissions; outputs graveyard land play access.
  • Partners / packages: Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Prismatic Vista, Fabled Passage, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Nurturing Peatland, Barren Moor, Tranquil Thicket, and Glacial Chasm.
  • Role peers: Ramunap Excavator and Conduit of Worlds also allow land plays from graveyard; Life from the Loam returns lands to hand.
  • Failure modes: artifact removal and Collector Ouphe does not stop the static ability, but broader artifact hate can remove it.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in attrition and land-denial games; vulnerable to graveyard exile.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Crucible before using fetch or sacrifice lands when you can replay them afterward.

Zuran Orb

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, zero-mana land sacrifice and survival engine.
  • Role type: lifegain/stabilization; mechanic enabler; engine piece.
  • Deck-specific job: sacrifices lands for 2 life, triggering Gitrog when land cards go to your graveyard and buying time against damage races.
  • Timing: deploy early for free if artifact hate is not a concern; activate for lethal prevention, Gitrog draw chains, or to save lands from exile effects.
  • Inputs / outputs: sacrifices a land; you gain 2 life.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Glacial Chasm, and Squandered Resources.
  • Role peers: Squandered Resources sacrifices lands for mana; Glacial Chasm prevents damage at land and life costs.
  • Failure modes: Collector Ouphe stops Zuran Orb's activated ability; sacrificing too many lands can strand commander recast or interaction.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against burn and combat pressure; less useful against combo that ignores life total.
  • Low-skill guidance: sacrifice lands for life only when survival, Gitrog draw, Titania tokens, or recursion makes the cost acceptable.

Expedition Map

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, artifact land tutor.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: searches any land card to hand, giving slow but precise access to combo, survival, hate, and big-mana lands.
  • Timing: cast early when you can afford the setup; activate once you know whether the target is Dakmor Salvage, Bojuka Bog, Glacial Chasm, Cabal Coffers, Gaea's Cradle, Field of the Dead, Strip Mine, Wasteland, or fixing.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs {1}; activation costs {2}, taps, and sacrifices Expedition Map to search a land card, reveal it, put it into hand, then shuffle.
  • Partners / packages: pairs with The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth.
  • Role peers: Crop Rotation is instant and puts land onto battlefield; Elvish Reclaimer repeats the search from battlefield.
  • Failure modes: slow, artifact-vulnerable, and stopped by Collector Ouphe.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good when you need a specific utility land; too slow against immediate lethal unless already on battlefield.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose the land for the present problem, and do not board in Collector Ouphe while relying on Map.

Conduit of Worlds

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, land-recursion artifact with permanent recast access.
  • Role type: recursion; engine piece; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: plays lands from your graveyard and can cast a nonland permanent card from your graveyard under a once-per-turn spell restriction.
  • Timing: cast when the graveyard contains useful lands or a key nonland permanent you can cast before any other spell this turn.
  • Inputs / outputs: static ability lets you play lands from graveyard; {T} targets a nonland permanent card in your graveyard and, if you have not cast a spell this turn, you may cast it, then cannot cast additional spells this turn; activate only as a sorcery.
  • Mode map: land-recursion static supports fetch/sacrifice loops; sorcery-speed activated ability recasts Exploration, Tortured Existence, Sylvan Library, Skirge Familiar, or Ramunap Excavator when the one-spell restriction is acceptable.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Zuran Orb, Squandered Resources, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Nurturing Peatland, and Glacial Chasm.
  • Role peers: Crucible of Worlds and Ramunap Excavator share land recursion without the nonland permanent activation.
  • Failure modes: Collector Ouphe stops the artifact's activated ability but not the static land-play ability; graveyard hate can remove targets.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent in attrition; slower against combo and awkward when you must cast multiple spells in one turn.
  • Low-skill guidance: use the land-recursion text freely, but only activate the nonland-permanent ability before casting any other spell.

Titania, Protector of Argoth

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, land-death payoff and pressure engine.
  • Role type: engine payoff; threat/clock; recursion.
  • Deck-specific job: returns a land from your graveyard when she enters and turns lands you control going to graveyard from battlefield into 5/3 Elemental tokens.
  • Timing: cast before fetch, sacrifice, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Zuran Orb, or Squandered Resources bursts.
  • Inputs / outputs: ETB returns target land card from your graveyard to battlefield; each land you control put into graveyard from battlefield creates a 5/3 green Elemental token.
  • Partners / packages: Zuran Orb, Squandered Resources, Crop Rotation, Elvish Reclaimer, Verdant Catacombs, Nurturing Peatland, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Glacial Chasm, and The Gitrog Monster.
  • Role peers: Field of the Dead creates 2/2 Zombies from varied land names; The Gitrog Monster draws from land cards going to graveyard.
  • Failure modes: sweeper exposure; sacrificing lands without recursion can create tokens but destroy future mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against midrange and control once sweepers are accounted for; good when graveyard hate stops dredge but battlefield pressure can win.
  • Low-skill guidance: cast Titania before sacrificing lands when possible, and count whether the resulting 5/3 tokens survive the board state.

Underrealm Lich

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, draw replacement and graveyard-selection engine.
  • Role type: engine piece; card selection; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: replaces draws with looking at three, putting one into hand and the rest into graveyard, giving controlled self-mill and selection.
  • Timing: cast when life total can support its protection ability and when draw replacement will not conflict with a topdeck tutor you need to actually draw.
  • Inputs / outputs: each draw is replaced by look at top three, put one into hand, rest into graveyard; pay 4 life to give Underrealm Lich indestructible until end of turn and tap it.
  • Mode map: replacement ability fuels graveyard selection; 4-life ability protects from destruction but taps it and does not stop exile, sacrifice, bounce, or -X/-X.
  • Partners / packages: Sylvan Library, The One Ring, Tireless Tracker Clues, Barren Moor, Tranquil Thicket, Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, and reanimation spells.
  • Role peers: dredgers Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Grave-Troll, Golgari Thug, Darkblast, and Dakmor Salvage also replace draws but with fixed mill counts.
  • Failure modes: can prevent drawing a Vampiric Tutor or Worldly Tutor top card; 4 life is costly under pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in grindy games; weaker against fast damage or exile removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not combine Underrealm replacement and dredge blindly; choose the replacement that matches the current plan.

Dakmor Salvage

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, tapped black land and core dredge land.
  • Role type: mechanic enabler; engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: is both a land card and dredge card, making it the key repeatable object for Gitrog discard/draw/dredge loops.
  • Timing: play it tapped when black mana is needed later; keep or move it to graveyard when The Gitrog Monster plus a discard outlet can use dredge 2.
  • Inputs / outputs: enters tapped; taps for {B}; dredge 2 mills two cards and returns Dakmor Salvage from graveyard to hand instead of drawing.
  • Mode map: battlefield mode is a slow black source; graveyard mode is the Gitrog loop piece when a draw replacement prompt offers dredge 2.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Oblivion Crown, Skirge Familiar, Bazaar of Baghdad, Entomb, Crop Rotation, Elvish Reclaimer, and Life from the Loam.
  • Role peers: Life from the Loam recurs lands; Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, and Darkblast provide nonland dredge.
  • Failure modes: enters tapped; graveyard exile or low library can stop the loop; dredge is optional and replaces draws only when prompted.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: avoid committing it into visible graveyard hate unless the line is protected or immediately decisive.
  • Low-skill guidance: in Gitrog loops, discard Dakmor only when the engine is active and stop if prompts stop advancing the game.

Bazaar of Baghdad

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, non-mana discard/draw utility land and validation-risk engine piece.
  • Role type: discard outlet; mechanic enabler; card selection.
  • Deck-specific job: draws two cards then discards three cards, creating high-volume dredge and cleanup pressure without producing mana from its own text.
  • Timing: activate when discarding three is profitable through The Gitrog Monster, dredge cards, Life from the Loam, or reanimation; avoid when you need actual mana development.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps to draw two cards, then discard three cards; each draw may be replaced by a legal dredge prompt if offered.
  • Partners / packages: Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, Darkblast, Dread Return, Reanimate, Animate Dead, and Noxious Revival.
  • Role peers: Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Oblivion Crown, and Skirge Familiar discard cards without drawing two first.
  • Failure modes: deck metadata flags Commander legality/support validation for Bazaar; it does not list a mana ability, so do not count it as colored or colorless mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: powerful in safe graveyard windows; dangerous into graveyard exile or hands that cannot afford discarding three.
  • Low-skill guidance: never keep a mana-light hand because it has Bazaar; it is an engine land, not a mana source.

Bojuka Bog

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, tapped black land and graveyard hate land.
  • Role type: hate piece; mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: exiles target player's graveyard when it enters, while later tapping for black mana.
  • Timing: play or tutor before an opponent can cast flashback, delve, escape, reanimation, or graveyard recursion; do not expect it to undo costs already paid for a spell on the stack.
  • Inputs / outputs: enters tapped; ETB targets a player and exiles that player's graveyard; taps for {B}.
  • Partners / packages: Crop Rotation, Elvish Reclaimer, Expedition Map, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, and Life from the Loam.
  • Role peers: sideboard Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, and Surgical Extraction; Noxious Revival can also disrupt a single graveyard card by topdecking it.
  • Failure modes: tapped entry costs tempo; exiling your own graveyard can break Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, and reanimation.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: high priority against graveyard combo and reanimation; low priority against decks not using graveyards.
  • Low-skill guidance: target the opponent whose graveyard matters now, not yourself unless decking prevention or emergency denial requires it.

Boseiju, Who Endures

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, green legendary land and channel interaction.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; interaction-removal; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: acts as a green source or an uncountered-by-normal-spell-counter channel answer to artifacts, enchantments, and nonbasic lands.
  • Timing: play as green mana when development needs it; hold in hand when a visible hate artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land is likely to stop the engine.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps for {G}; channel costs {1}{G} minus {1} for each legendary creature you control, discards Boseiju, destroys target artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land an opponent controls, and that player may search for a land card with a basic land type onto the battlefield.
  • Mode map: land mode supports green spells; channel mode is interaction from hand and can trigger Gitrog because Boseiju is a land card discarded to graveyard.
  • Partners / packages: discount creatures are The Gitrog Monster, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, and Titania, Protector of Argoth; recursion through Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds.
  • Role peers: Force of Vigor, Abrupt Decay, and Assassin's Trophy answer overlapping permanent classes.
  • Failure modes: channel gives the opponent a land-card-with-basic-land-type search; playing it removes channel access until recurred.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: preserve against artifact/enchantment prison, graveyard hate, or dangerous nonbasic lands.
  • Low-skill guidance: if you need green mana to cast Gitrog support, play it; if hate is visible or expected, hold it for channel.

Takenuma, Abandoned Mire

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, black legendary land and channel recursion.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; recursion; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: is a black source or a channel spell that mills three and returns a creature or planeswalker card from your graveyard to hand.
  • Timing: play as black mana when development needs it; hold in hand when a key creature is likely to be milled or killed and recurred.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps for {B}; channel costs {3}{B} minus {1} for each legendary creature you control, discards Takenuma, mills three cards, then returns a creature or planeswalker card from your graveyard to hand.
  • Mode map: land mode fixes black; channel mode stocks the graveyard and recovers The Gitrog Monster, Ramunap Excavator, Skirge Familiar, Titania, Protector of Argoth, or Underrealm Lich.
  • Partners / packages: discount creatures are The Gitrog Monster, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, and Titania, Protector of Argoth; pairs with Life from the Loam and other land recursion after channel.
  • Role peers: Tortured Existence, Golgari Thug, Noxious Revival, Reanimate, Animate Dead, and Dread Return.
  • Failure modes: channel is expensive without legendary creatures; milling three can expose cards to graveyard hate.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against removal-heavy attrition; weaker against graveyard exile.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not channel Takenuma if you need it as your only black source for Gitrog or tutors.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, legendary land-type fixer and big-mana enabler.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: makes each land a Swamp in addition to its other land types, improving black access and powering Cabal Coffers.
  • Timing: play when black fixing or Cabal Coffers output matters; consider whether opponents also benefit from their lands becoming Swamps.
  • Inputs / outputs: static effect changes land types; black mana availability comes from the Swamp subtype when the rules engine exposes the resulting mana ability.
  • Partners / packages: Cabal Coffers, The Gitrog Monster, Demonic Tutor, Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Reanimate, Toxic Deluge, Skirge Familiar, and utility lands without printed mana abilities if the engine grants Swamp functionality.
  • Role peers: Dryad of the Ilysian Grove makes your lands every basic land type; Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth makes each land a Forest.
  • Failure modes: helps opponents too; if the runtime does not expose derived Swamp mana on a specific land, follow the legal mana actions shown.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: prioritize with Cabal Coffers for big mana; delay if an opponent can exploit universal Swamps more than you.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Urborg to fix black and fuel Coffers, but do not assume hidden mana abilities beyond what the engine presents.

Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, legendary land-type fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
  • Deck-specific job: makes each land a Forest in addition to its other land types, improving green access for setup, interaction, and land recursion.
  • Timing: play when green mana is the bottleneck or when utility lands need Forest type through the rules engine.
  • Inputs / outputs: static effect changes land types; green mana availability comes from the Forest subtype when the rules engine exposes the resulting mana ability.
  • Partners / packages: casts Exploration, Burgeoning, Life from the Loam, Crop Rotation, Ramunap Excavator, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Force of Vigor, and Finale of Devastation.
  • Role peers: Dryad of the Ilysian Grove makes your lands every basic land type; Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth makes each land a Swamp.
  • Failure modes: helps opponents too; runtime mana choices must show the derived Forest mana before relying on it.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: important against mana-denial and green-heavy hands; less urgent with Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Command Tower, or Forest.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Yavimaya when green mana unlocks your hand or commander setup.

Cabal Coffers

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, big black mana land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: turns Swamp count into large black mana, especially with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or Dryad of the Ilysian Grove.
  • Timing: tutor or play when you control enough Swamps to profit after paying {2} and tapping it.
  • Inputs / outputs: activation costs {2} and tapping Cabal Coffers; adds {B} for each Swamp you control.
  • Partners / packages: Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, The Gitrog Monster, Skirge Familiar, Demonic Tutor, Toxic Deluge, Reanimate, Dread Return, Finale of Devastation, and commander-tax recasts.
  • Role peers: Gaea's Cradle makes green mana from creatures; Squandered Resources creates burst mana by sacrificing lands.
  • Failure modes: poor with few Swamps; does not tap for mana without paying the activation cost.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: powerful in slow games and big-mana races; vulnerable to Wasteland, Strip Mine, or opposing land hate.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not keep Cabal Coffers as an early mana source unless you already have Swamp support.

Gaea's Cradle

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, creature-count green mana land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine payoff.
  • Deck-specific job: produces green mana equal to creatures you control, enabling Finale of Devastation, multiple engines, or commander support after a board develops.
  • Timing: play or tutor after you have creatures such as The Gitrog Monster, Stitcher's Supplier, Satyr Wayfinder, Dryad Arbor, Titania, Protector of Argoth tokens, or Field of the Dead Zombies.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps for {G} for each creature you control.
  • Partners / packages: Finale of Devastation, Green Sun's Zenith, Dread Return fodder, Field of the Dead, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Tireless Provisioner, Tireless Tracker, and sideboard creature bullets Endurance, Collector Ouphe, Haywire Mite, Scavenging Ooze.
  • Role peers: Cabal Coffers scales with Swamps; Lotus Cobra and Tireless Provisioner scale with land entries.
  • Failure modes: produces zero mana with no creatures; creature sweepers can turn it off.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest against midrange stalls and token boards; risky in sweeper-heavy games.
  • Low-skill guidance: count current creatures before using Cradle as a mana source for Gitrog or Finale.

Command Tower

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, primary commander-color fixing land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: taps for black or green in The Gitrog Monster's color identity without life loss or entry delay.
  • Timing: prioritize in openers and early turns because it casts both sides of the deck.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps for one mana of any color in your commander's color identity.
  • Partners / packages: casts The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Entomb, Demonic Tutor, Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Crop Rotation, and Veil of Summer.
  • Role peers: Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Llanowar Wastes, Blooming Marsh, Deathcap Glade, Woodland Cemetery, and Darkbore Pathway.
  • Failure modes: nonbasic land hate can remove it; it has no special graveyard, tutor, or landfall text beyond being a land.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: important in hands with utility lands such as Bazaar of Baghdad, Glacial Chasm, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Strip Mine, or Wasteland.
  • Low-skill guidance: keep Command Tower as stable color access unless sacrificing it directly wins, saves you, or is recoverable.

Overgrown Tomb

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, fetchable Swamp Forest dual.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: provides black or green and can be found by fetchlands that search Swamp or Forest.
  • Timing: pay 2 life to have it enter untapped when the turn needs immediate mana; let it enter tapped when life and tempo allow.
  • Inputs / outputs: as it enters, you may pay 2 life; if not, it enters tapped; taps for {B} or {G}.
  • Partners / packages: search targets from Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, and Polluted Delta; supports Cabal Coffers with Swamp type and green setup with Forest type.
  • Role peers: Bayou has the same land types without shock timing; Command Tower fixes without basic land types.
  • Failure modes: life payment stacks with Vampiric Tutor, Reanimate, Sylvan Library, The One Ring, Nurturing Peatland, and Toxic Deluge.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: enter untapped against fast decks only when that mana prevents more damage or enables a key line.
  • Low-skill guidance: pay 2 life only when immediate black or green mana matters this turn.

Bayou

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, fetchable Swamp Forest dual.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: gives painless black-green fixing with both Swamp and Forest land types.
  • Timing: fetch or play early when you need stable colors and want Cabal Coffers, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, or green spells supported.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps for {B} or {G}.
  • Partners / packages: search targets from Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, and Polluted Delta; casts Entomb, Life from the Loam, Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, and The Gitrog Monster.
  • Role peers: Overgrown Tomb is another Swamp Forest but can cost 2 life; Command Tower fixes without fetchable land types.
  • Failure modes: nonbasic land hate and land destruction can remove it.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: high-priority early fetch target when life total matters.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose Bayou over Overgrown Tomb when both are legal and you do not need a shuffle or shock timing difference.

Llanowar Wastes

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, pain-land black-green fixer.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: supplies colorless safely or black/green with 1 damage to you, helping cast early tutors and setup.
  • Timing: use colored mode when the spell matters now; use {C} for generic costs when preserving life is important.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps for {C}, or taps for {B} or {G} and deals 1 damage to you.
  • Partners / packages: casts Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Life from the Loam, Crop Rotation, Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, and The Gitrog Monster.
  • Role peers: Talisman of Resilience has a similar color/life tradeoff; Command Tower, Bayou, and Overgrown Tomb fix without repeated damage after entry.
  • Failure modes: repeated pain matters with Sylvan Library, The One Ring, fetchlands, Reanimate, and Toxic Deluge.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: be conservative against burn or aggro; spend life freely only when it prevents a larger loss.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not take 1 damage for colored mana if {C} already pays the cost you need.

Twilight Mire

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, black-green filter land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: turns an available black or green mana into double-black, black-green, or double-green for color-intensive turns.
  • Timing: strongest with another source of {B} or {G}; weaker as the only colored land in an opener.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps for {C}, or pays {B/G} and taps to add {B}{B}, {B}{G}, or {G}{G}.
  • Partners / packages: supports The Gitrog Monster, Demonic Tutor, Toxic Deluge, Finale of Devastation, Force of Vigor, Necromentia, and Pernicious Deed.
  • Role peers: Golgari Signet filters one mana into {B}{G}; Talisman of Resilience makes colors directly at life cost.
  • Failure modes: cannot produce colored mana alone unless another source pays the hybrid activation.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: valuable in hands with Sol Ring or colorless utility lands plus one colored source; poor as lone fixer.
  • Low-skill guidance: count Twilight Mire as color fixing only when another black or green mana is available.

Nurturing Peatland

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, black-green pain land and sacrifice draw land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: fixes colors early and later sacrifices itself to draw, triggering Gitrog and becoming reusable with land recursion.
  • Timing: use for mana while developing; sacrifice to draw when flooded, when Gitrog is active, or when recursion can replay it.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps and pays 1 life for {B} or {G}; `{1}, {T}, sacrifice Nurturing Peatland: draw a card.
  • Mode map: mana mode fixes colors at life cost; sacrifice-draw mode converts the land into a draw event and land-to-graveyard trigger.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Zuran Orb, and Titania, Protector of Argoth.
  • Role peers: Barren Moor and Tranquil Thicket cycle from hand; fetchlands sacrifice for fixing rather than cards.
  • Failure modes: life payments add up; sacrificing before recursion can reduce commander-tax mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent in attrition; be cautious against burn or fast combat.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not cash it in until the card draw, Gitrog trigger, or recursion loop is worth losing the land.

Woodland Cemetery

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, conditional black-green fixing land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: provides {B} or {G} if you control a Swamp or Forest, rewarding typed lands and land-type effects.
  • Timing: sequence after Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Forest, Swamp, Dryad Arbor, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, or Dryad of the Ilysian Grove when possible.
  • Inputs / outputs: enters tapped unless you control a Swamp or Forest; taps for {B} or {G}.
  • Partners / packages: works with Swamp/Forest typed cards Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Forest, Swamp, and Dryad Arbor, plus type effects from Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, and Dryad of the Ilysian Grove.
  • Role peers: Deathcap Glade checks land count; Blooming Marsh checks early land count.
  • Failure modes: can enter tapped on turn one and miss a one-mana play.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good in normal two-land starts; awkward in utility-land-heavy openers.
  • Low-skill guidance: play a Swamp or Forest typed land first if Woodland Cemetery must enter untapped.

Deathcap Glade

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, conditional black-green fixing land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: provides {B} or {G} but enters tapped unless you already control two or more other lands.
  • Timing: better from turn three onward; do not rely on it for turn-one Exploration, Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, or Crop Rotation.
  • Inputs / outputs: enters tapped unless you control two or more other lands; taps for {B} or {G}.
  • Partners / packages: supports midgame The Gitrog Monster, Demonic Tutor, Life from the Loam, Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, and Finale of Devastation.
  • Role peers: Blooming Marsh is better early; Woodland Cemetery checks Swamp/Forest control.
  • Failure modes: slow in low-land openers or after land sacrifices.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: acceptable in slower games; bad when early interaction or ramp must happen on curve.
  • Low-skill guidance: count it as tapped early unless you already have two other lands.

Blooming Marsh

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, early black-green fixing land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: enters untapped while you control two or fewer other lands, making it strong for early tutors, discard outlets, and setup.
  • Timing: lead with it early; later, expect it to enter tapped when you control three or more other lands.
  • Inputs / outputs: enters tapped unless you control two or fewer other lands; taps for {B} or {G}.
  • Partners / packages: casts Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Putrid Imp, Exploration, Burgeoning, Crop Rotation, Life from the Loam, and Abrupt Decay.
  • Role peers: Deathcap Glade is better later; Command Tower, Bayou, and Overgrown Tomb are more flexible at any land count.
  • Failure modes: poor late topdeck when immediate untapped mana matters.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in openers against fast decks because it supports turn-one and turn-two action.
  • Low-skill guidance: play Blooming Marsh before your third land if you need it untapped.

Darkbore Pathway

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, single-choice black or green MDFC land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; modal utility.
  • Deck-specific job: enters as either the black face Darkbore Pathway or the green face Slitherbore Pathway, fixing the color your hand lacks.
  • Timing: choose the face based on spells you must cast over the next two turns, not on hypothetical future draws.
  • Inputs / outputs: Darkbore Pathway taps for {B}; Slitherbore Pathway taps for {G} after you choose that face as it is played.
  • Mode map: black face supports Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Putrid Imp, Demonic Tutor, and Reanimate; green face supports Exploration, Crop Rotation, Life from the Loam, Veil of Summer, and Ramunap Excavator.
  • Partners / packages: works with commander-color requirements for The Gitrog Monster but lacks Swamp/Forest land types for fetchland and Woodland Cemetery checks.
  • Role peers: Command Tower, Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Llanowar Wastes, and Blooming Marsh.
  • Failure modes: chosen face cannot later switch; wrong color can strand half the hand.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: choose black against tutor/removal hands; choose green against land-engine hands.
  • Low-skill guidance: decide by the card you need to cast first, especially Gitrog setup and interaction.

Verdant Catacombs

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, Swamp/Forest fetch utility land.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: sacrifices itself to find a registered Swamp or Forest target and places a land card in your graveyard for Gitrog and recursion.
  • Timing: use when fixing, shuffling, landfall, land-to-graveyard triggers, or recursion value matters; hold if landfall timing is better later.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps, pays 1 life, sacrifices itself; searches for a Swamp or Forest card, puts it onto battlefield, then shuffles.
  • Partners / packages: targets Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Forest, Swamp, and Dryad Arbor; pairs with The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Lotus Cobra, Tireless Tracker, and Tireless Provisioner.
  • Role peers: Windswept Heath, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, and Polluted Delta search narrower registered typed targets.
  • Failure modes: life payment matters; searching Dryad Arbor requires respecting creature summoning sickness and vulnerability.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in landfall and recursion games; be cautious against effects punishing searching.
  • Low-skill guidance: fetch the color you need now, and remember the sacrificed fetch can be replayed with land recursion.

Windswept Heath

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, Forest-focused fetch utility land.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: sacrifices itself to find a Forest or Plains card; in this registered deck, relevant targets are Forest-typed cards, not Plains.

  • Role peers: Misty Rainforest has the same registered Forest-target map; Verdant Catacombs can also find Swamp.
  • Failure modes: no registered Plains target; life payment and land sacrifice matter under pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: use Dryad Arbor only when a creature body is worth exposing a land to creature removal.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not claim white access from Windswept Heath in this deck.

Marsh Flats

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, Swamp-focused fetch utility land.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: sacrifices itself to find a Plains or Swamp card; in this registered deck, relevant targets are Swamp-typed cards, not Plains.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: fetch black early for Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Reanimate, or Toxic Deluge.
  • Low-skill guidance: treat Marsh Flats as black fixing here unless Bayou or Overgrown Tomb gives both colors.

  • Role peers: Windswept Heath has the same registered Forest-target map; Verdant Catacombs can also find Swamp targets.
  • Failure modes: no registered Island target; fetching Dryad Arbor can expose a land to creature removal.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: choose a Forest target when green spells unlock the hand; choose Bayou or Overgrown Tomb when black is also needed.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not claim blue access from Misty Rainforest in this deck.

Polluted Delta

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, Swamp-focused fetch utility land.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: sacrifices itself to find an Island or Swamp card; in this registered deck, relevant targets are Swamp-typed cards, not Islands.

  • Matchup / visibility hooks: use for early black when Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, or Reanimate is the line.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not claim blue access from Polluted Delta in this deck.

Prismatic Vista

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, basic-land fetch utility land.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: sacrifices itself to find Forest or Swamp, placing a land in the graveyard for Gitrog and recursion while fixing basics.
  • Timing: use when you need a basic, a shuffle, landfall, or a land-to-graveyard trigger; hold if a landfall payoff is about to enter.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps, pays 1 life, sacrifices itself; searches for a basic land card, puts it onto battlefield, then shuffles.
  • Partners / packages: targets Forest or Swamp; pairs with The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Lotus Cobra, Tireless Tracker, and Tireless Provisioner.
  • Role peers: Fabled Passage also finds basics but may enter tapped; typed fetchlands can find Bayou and Overgrown Tomb.
  • Failure modes: cannot find Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, or Dryad Arbor; life payment matters.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: useful against nonbasic land hate and when basics are safer.
  • Low-skill guidance: fetch Forest for green setup or Swamp for black tutors/removal based on your hand.

Fabled Passage

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, basic-land fetch utility land.
  • Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: searches Forest or Swamp, supports landfall and land-recursion loops, and can untap the searched basic once you control four or more lands.
  • Timing: early fixing is tapped; later, use with four or more lands for immediate mana, landfall, Gitrog trigger, or recursion value.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps and sacrifices itself; searches for a basic land card, puts it onto battlefield tapped, shuffles, then untaps that land if you control four or more lands.
  • Role peers: Prismatic Vista costs 1 life but enters the basic untapped; typed fetchlands can find duals.
  • Failure modes: early tapped basic can cost tempo; cannot find nonbasic typed lands.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in recurring landfall lines; slow when immediate untapped color is required before four lands.
  • Low-skill guidance: remember the basic is tapped until the four-land condition is met.

Field of the Dead

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, colorless late-game token land.
  • Role type: engine payoff; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: creates 2/2 black Zombie tokens when this or another land enters and you control seven or more lands with different names.
  • Timing: tutor or play when your land names are already diverse or recursion can reach seven names soon.
  • Inputs / outputs: enters tapped; taps for {C}; landfall condition creates a 2/2 black Zombie creature token.
  • Partners / packages: different-name support from singleton lands, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Exploration, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, and Dryad of the Ilysian Grove.
  • Role peers: Titania, Protector of Argoth makes 5/3 Elementals from land deaths; Finale of Devastation converts a creature board into lethal.
  • Failure modes: enters tapped and makes only {C}; no token until seven differently named lands are controlled.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against attrition and graveyard hate that leaves land play intact; slow against fast combo.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not fetch Field early if you still need black or green mana to cast Gitrog.

Strip Mine

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, land interaction and colorless mana land.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys any target land and becomes repeatable pressure with land recursion.
  • Timing: use on a visible high-impact land, or hold until Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, or Life from the Loam can recover it.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps for {C}; or taps and sacrifices itself to destroy target land.
  • Mode map: mana mode pays generic costs; sacrifice mode answers a target land and places Strip Mine in your graveyard.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Titania, Protector of Argoth, and Crop Rotation.
  • Role peers: Wasteland hits nonbasic lands only; Ghost Quarter hits any land but may give a basic.
  • Failure modes: colorless only; premature sacrifice can leave you short on commander-tax mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: prioritize lands that enable an immediate win, lock, or outsized mana; avoid low-value land trades before your engine is online.
  • Low-skill guidance: destroy a land only when the target matters or you can replay Strip Mine.

Wasteland

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, nonbasic land interaction and colorless mana land.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target nonbasic land and loops with land recursion to pressure greedy mana or key utility lands.
  • Timing: hold for a nonbasic land that actually changes the game; use after recursion if you can keep making land drops.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps for {C}; or taps and sacrifices itself to destroy target nonbasic land.
  • Mode map: mana mode pays generic costs; sacrifice mode answers nonbasic land only.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Titania, Protector of Argoth, and Crop Rotation.
  • Role peers: Strip Mine hits any land; Ghost Quarter hits any land but may give a basic.
  • Failure modes: cannot target basic lands; colorless mana does not cast black or green spells.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strongest against big mana, commander utility lands, and combo lands; low value against basic-heavy decks.
  • Low-skill guidance: save Wasteland for a meaningful nonbasic land unless sacrificing it advances Gitrog or Titania with recursion.

Ghost Quarter

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, land interaction and colorless mana land.
  • Role type: interaction-removal; mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys target land while giving its controller a possible basic land, and can target your own land for emergency fixing if that is worth the exchange.
  • Timing: use on key lands when the basic-land search does not undo the disruption, or on your own land only when fixing prevents a worse failure.
  • Inputs / outputs: taps for {C}; or taps and sacrifices itself to destroy target land, then that land's controller may search for a basic land card onto the battlefield.
  • Mode map: mana mode pays generic costs; sacrifice mode is land interaction or rare self-fixing.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Titania, Protector of Argoth, and Crop Rotation.
  • Role peers: Strip Mine gives no basic search; Wasteland is limited to nonbasic lands.
  • Failure modes: the opponent may replace the land with a basic; colorless mana does not help colored bottlenecks.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: best against lands with unique text, not ordinary fixing lands.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not Ghost Quarter a random land if the opponent's basic search leaves them fine and you lose a land drop.

The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, legendary creature-tax utility land and validation-risk card.
  • Role type: hate piece; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: gives each creature an upkeep trigger that destroys that creature unless its controller pays {1}, pressuring commanders, mana creatures, and token boards.
  • Timing: play or tutor when opposing creature count matters more than your own creature engines, and when you can pay for the creatures you must keep.
  • Inputs / outputs: The Gitrog Monster, Ramunap Excavator, Skirge Familiar, Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, opposing commanders, and opposing token creatures each receive "At the beginning of your upkeep, destroy this creature unless you pay {1}."
  • Partners / packages: Crop Rotation, Elvish Reclaimer, Expedition Map, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, and Conduit of Worlds; survival peers include Glacial Chasm, Zuran Orb, and Toxic Deluge.
  • Role peers: Toxic Deluge removes creatures immediately; sideboard Pernicious Deed sweeps by mana value.
  • Failure modes: deck metadata flags Commander legality/support validation for Tabernacle; it lists no mana ability, so do not count it as a mana source unless another effect grants one and the engine exposes it.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against go-wide boards; poor when your own The Gitrog Monster, Ramunap Excavator, Skirge Familiar, or token board must survive.
  • Low-skill guidance: before playing Tabernacle, count your own upkeep payments and decide which creatures are expendable.

Glacial Chasm

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, emergency damage-prevention land.
  • Role type: lifegain/stabilization; protection/evasion.
  • Deck-specific job: prevents all damage that would be dealt to you, at the costs of sacrificing a land on entry, cumulative upkeep life payments, and losing your own attacks.
  • Timing: tutor or play when damage would kill you or when recursion can sustain its costs long enough to rebuild.
  • Inputs / outputs: when it enters, sacrifice a land; cumulative upkeep pays 2 life per age counter total; creatures you control cannot attack; all damage to you is prevented.
  • Partners / packages: Crop Rotation, Elvish Reclaimer, Expedition Map, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Zuran Orb, and The Gitrog Monster.
  • Role peers: Zuran Orb gains life by sacrificing lands; The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale taxes creature boards; Toxic Deluge removes creatures.
  • Failure modes: no mana ability listed; cumulative upkeep can become unaffordable; your creatures cannot attack while it remains.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against combat and burn; weak against combo, mill, poison-like alternate kills if present, or non-damage win conditions.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Chasm to survive lethal damage, then plan how to pay, sacrifice, or recur it.

Dryad Arbor

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, land creature Forest Dryad.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: functions as a Forest land that is also a 1/1 creature, enabling creature-count mana, sacrifice fodder, blocking, and green access with summoning-sickness limits.
  • Timing: fetch or play when the body matters or green mana next turn matters; avoid exposing it to creature removal if you need the land.
  • Inputs / outputs: is not a spell; affected by summoning sickness; has {T}: Add {G} through its Forest text.
  • Partners / packages: fetchable by Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, and Misty Rainforest; possible Green Sun's Zenith X=0 target only if the rules engine exposes it as a legal green creature; supports Gaea's Cradle, Dread Return, Tortured Existence, and Skullclamp is not registered.
  • Role peers: Forest is safer green mana; Sakura-Tribe Elder, Satyr Wayfinder, and Stitcher's Supplier are creature material with different utility.
  • Failure modes: Card Reference omits the color indicator needed for some green-creature search logic; dies to creature removal and sweepers.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: good as surprise blocker or creature-count source; bad into visible pingers or sweepers.
  • Low-skill guidance: treat Dryad Arbor as both land and fragile creature, so do not fetch it when you need guaranteed mana immediately.

Barren Moor

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, tapped black cycling land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: serves as a black source or a discard-to-draw land that can trigger Gitrog and be recurred.
  • Timing: play tapped when black mana is needed; cycle when flooded, when Gitrog is active, or when Life from the Loam can recover it.
  • Inputs / outputs: enters tapped; taps for {B}; cycling {B} means pay {B}, discard Barren Moor, then draw a card.
  • Mode map: land mode provides delayed black mana; cycling mode discards this land card and creates a draw event that may be dredged if a legal replacement is offered.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Dakmor Salvage, and Tireless Tracker.
  • Role peers: Tranquil Thicket is the green cycling land; Nurturing Peatland sacrifices from battlefield to draw.
  • Failure modes: tapped entry costs tempo; cycling consumes black mana and does not itself produce black.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong in attrition and dredge turns; slow against aggressive starts.
  • Low-skill guidance: cycle it when the draw or dredge is worth more than a tapped black land.

Tranquil Thicket

  • Deck role: Main 1 copy, tapped green cycling land.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection; mechanic enabler.
  • Deck-specific job: serves as a green source or a discard-to-draw land that can trigger Gitrog and be recurred.
  • Timing: play tapped when green mana is needed; cycle when flooded, when Gitrog is active, or when Life from the Loam can recover it.
  • Inputs / outputs: enters tapped; taps for {G}; cycling {G} means pay {G}, discard Tranquil Thicket, then draw a card.
  • Mode map: land mode provides delayed green mana; cycling mode discards this land card and creates a draw event that may be dredged if a legal replacement is offered.
  • Partners / packages: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Dakmor Salvage, and Tireless Tracker.
  • Role peers: Barren Moor is the black cycling land; Nurturing Peatland draws by sacrificing from battlefield.
  • Failure modes: tapped entry costs tempo; cycling consumes green mana and does not provide green access.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: useful in long games with recursion; weaker when a turn-one green spell must be cast immediately.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not cycle your only green source before casting the green setup spell that makes the hand work.

Forest

  • Deck role: Main 3 copies, basic green mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: provides reliable green for land engines, Loam, tutors, protection, and ramp without nonbasic vulnerability.
  • Timing: fetch or play when green is the bottleneck or when basic access is safer than a nonbasic land.
  • Inputs / outputs: basic Forest taps for {G}.
  • Partners / packages: searched by Prismatic Vista, Fabled Passage, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and Springbloom Druid; fetchable as a Forest card by Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, and Misty Rainforest; casts Exploration, Burgeoning, Life from the Loam, Crop Rotation, Veil of Summer, and Ramunap Excavator.
  • Role peers: Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Command Tower, Blooming Marsh, and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth provide green access in different ways.
  • Failure modes: does not cast black spells by itself unless Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, or another legal effect changes available mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: prioritize basics against nonbasic land hate or when fetch life loss matters.
  • Low-skill guidance: fetch Forest when green setup unlocks the hand and black is already covered or less urgent.

Swamp

  • Deck role: Main 2 copies, basic black mana resource.
  • Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
  • Deck-specific job: provides reliable black for tutors, discard outlets, reanimation, interaction, and Cabal Coffers count.
  • Timing: fetch or play when black is the bottleneck or when basic access is safer than a nonbasic land.
  • Inputs / outputs: basic Swamp taps for {B}.
  • Partners / packages: searched by Prismatic Vista, Fabled Passage, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and Springbloom Druid; fetchable as a Swamp card by Verdant Catacombs, Marsh Flats, and Polluted Delta; casts Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Putrid Imp, Reanimate, and Toxic Deluge.
  • Role peers: Bayou, Overgrown Tomb, Command Tower, Blooming Marsh, Bojuka Bog, and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth provide black access in different ways.
  • Failure modes: does not cast green spells by itself unless Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, or another legal effect changes available mana.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: prioritize basics against nonbasic land hate and when Cabal Coffers count matters.
  • Low-skill guidance: fetch Swamp when black tutors, removal, or Gitrog's black cost is the next bottleneck.

Endurance

  • Deck role: Sideboard 1 copy, graveyard-interaction creature.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: with flash and reach, can reset up to one target player's graveyard by putting all cards from that graveyard on the bottom of that player's library in a random order.
  • Timing: use before an opponent pays flashback, delve, escape, reanimation, or recursion costs; target yourself only to prevent decking or protect key cards from exile when bottoming them is acceptable.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs {1}{G}{G} or evoke by exiling a green card from hand; ETB targets up to one player and bottoms that player's graveyard in random order.
  • Mode map: normal cast keeps a 3/4 reach body; evoke mode trades a green card and Endurance for instant-speed graveyard reset.
  • Partners / packages: searchable by Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, and Finale of Devastation; sideboarded with Scavenging Ooze, Surgical Extraction, and Thoughtseize against graveyard pressure.
  • Role peers: Bojuka Bog exiles a target player's graveyard; Scavenging Ooze exiles individual cards; Surgical Extraction removes same-name copies from zones.
  • Failure modes: bottoming your own Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, or dredgers can shut off your primary engine; evoke requires a green card.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: bring against graveyard combo, reanimation, flashback, escape, dredge mirrors, or self-decking risk.
  • Low-skill guidance: Endurance does not shuffle; it puts graveyard cards on the bottom in random order, so use it only when that reset helps.

Collector Ouphe

  • Deck role: Sideboard 1 copy, artifact-activated-ability hate creature.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: shuts off activated abilities of artifacts, slowing opposing artifact plans but also many of your own artifacts and tokens.
  • Timing: bring in when opposing artifact activated abilities matter more than your own artifact mana and artifact engines.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs {1}{G}; static ability says activated abilities of artifacts cannot be activated.
  • Partners / packages: pairs with land-based acceleration Exploration, Burgeoning, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, and Lotus Cobra after cutting or de-emphasizing Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, and The One Ring.
  • Role peers: Pithing Needle stops activated abilities of sources with one chosen name except mana abilities; Force of Vigor and Haywire Mite remove artifact/enchantment targets.
  • Failure modes: stops your Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, The One Ring, Zuran Orb, Expedition Map, Conduit of Worlds activated ability, Tireless Tracker Clues, and Tireless Provisioner Food/Treasure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: strong against artifact combo and artifact mana tables; poor when your hand depends on artifact abilities.
  • Low-skill guidance: do not board in Ouphe without checking which of your own artifact abilities you still need.

Haywire Mite

  • Deck role: Sideboard 1 copy, cheap noncreature artifact/enchantment exile.
  • Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal; lifegain/stabilization.
  • Deck-specific job: exiles target noncreature artifact or noncreature enchantment and gains 2 life when it dies.
  • Timing: deploy when a visible hate piece or prison permanent is likely; hold activation for the noncreature artifact/enchantment that blocks Gitrog, graveyard recursion, or land engines.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs {1}; {G}, sacrifice Haywire Mite exiles target noncreature artifact or noncreature enchantment; death trigger gains 2 life.
  • Partners / packages: sideboards with Force of Vigor, Pernicious Deed, Pithing Needle, and sometimes Collector Ouphe against artifact/enchantment pressure.
  • Role peers: Force of Vigor destroys up to two artifacts/enchantments; Boseiju, Who Endures destroys artifact, enchantment, or nonbasic land; Abrupt Decay hits low-mana-value nonland permanents.
  • Failure modes: cannot target creature artifacts or creature enchantments; Collector Ouphe stops Haywire Mite's activated ability because Haywire Mite is an artifact.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: bring against graveyard-hate artifacts, noncreature enchantment locks, and prison pieces; weak against spell combo and creature-only pressure.
  • Low-skill guidance: use Mite on the card that stops your engine, not on a random artifact if a hate permanent is visible.

Scavenging Ooze

  • Deck role: Sideboard 1 copy, repeatable targeted graveyard hate and lifegain creature.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet; lifegain/stabilization; threat/clock.
  • Deck-specific job: exiles target cards from graveyards one at a time, growing and gaining life when the exiled card is a creature.
  • Timing: keep green mana available before opponents can pay flashback, escape, delve, or reanimation costs; activate on your own cards only when denying an opponent or saving life matters more than your recursion.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs {1}{G}; {G} exiles target card from a graveyard; if it was a creature card, Scavenging Ooze gets a +1/+1 counter and you gain 1 life.
  • Partners / packages: sideboards with Endurance, Surgical Extraction, Thoughtseize, and Necromentia against graveyard and combo plans.
  • Role peers: Bojuka Bog exiles an entire target player's graveyard; Endurance bottoms a graveyard; Surgical Extraction removes same-name copies.
  • Failure modes: green-mana hungry; can accidentally exile your own Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Stinkweed Imp, or reanimation target.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: excellent against reanimation, creature recursion, and graveyard mirrors; weaker against noncreature spell combo unless key cards enter graveyard.
  • Low-skill guidance: exile the opponent's key card before they spend it, and protect your own engine cards unless losing immediately.

Pithing Needle

  • Deck role: Sideboard 1 copy, named activated-ability hate artifact.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: names a card as it enters and shuts off activated abilities of sources with that name unless they are mana abilities.
  • Timing: cast when a visible permanent, revealed hand, commander, graveyard card, or confirmed matchup gives a reliable name.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs {1}; as it enters, choose a card name; activated abilities of sources with the chosen name cannot be activated unless they are mana abilities.
  • Partners / packages: sideboards with Thoughtseize, Necromentia, and Surgical Extraction when public information identifies a key card; supports Assassin's Trophy, Abrupt Decay, Force of Vigor, and Boseiju, Who Endures by covering abilities removal cannot time cleanly.
  • Role peers: Collector Ouphe broadly stops artifact activated abilities; Necromentia names a nonbasic-land-name card to exile from zones; Surgical Extraction needs a graveyard target.
  • Failure modes: wrong name does nothing; does not stop mana abilities, triggered abilities, static abilities, spells, or replacement effects.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: bring against commander-centric activated abilities, planeswalkers, graveyard-hate artifacts with activated abilities, or specific engine permanents.
  • Low-skill guidance: choose a name from public information, not format memory, and remember mana abilities still work.

Pernicious Deed

  • Deck role: Sideboard 1 copy, scalable permanent sweeper.
  • Role type: interaction-sweeper; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: destroys artifacts, creatures, and enchantments with mana value X or less, clearing wide boards and low-mana piles such as Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Exploration, Burgeoning, and Tortured Existence.
  • Timing: deploy when you can threaten a reset; activate when the chosen X hurts opponents more than losing your own engines.
  • Inputs / outputs: costs {1}{B}{G}; {X}, sacrifice Pernicious Deed destroys each artifact, creature, and enchantment with mana value X or less.
  • Partners / packages: sideboards with Haywire Mite, Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, and Collector Ouphe against artifact/enchantment pressure; rebuilds with Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, and Conduit of Worlds.
  • Role peers: Toxic Deluge sweeps creatures by -X/-X; Force of Vigor hits up to two artifact or enchantment targets, such as opposing graveyard hate or prison pieces, without touching creatures.
  • Failure modes: destroys your Exploration, Burgeoning, Manabond, Tortured Existence, Oblivion Crown, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, The One Ring, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, and Skirge Familiar if their mana values are in range.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: bring against creature swarms, token pressure, and boards built from Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Exploration, Burgeoning, Tortured Existence, low-mana creatures, and similar low-mana artifacts or enchantments.
  • Low-skill guidance: count your own artifacts, creatures, and enchantments before choosing X.

Thoughtseize

  • Deck role: Sideboard 1 copy, proactive hand disruption.
  • Role type: interaction-discard; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: reveals target player's hand and lets you choose a nonland card for that player to discard, trading 2 life for information and disruption.
  • Timing: cast before committing The Gitrog Monster, Squandered Resources, Skirge Familiar, Finale of Devastation, or graveyard recursion into possible interaction or combo.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {B}; target player reveals hand; you choose a nonland card from it; that player discards that card; you lose 2 life.
  • Partners / packages: sideboards with Necromentia, Surgical Extraction, Pithing Needle, and Endurance when known cards or graveyard plans matter.
  • Role peers: Necromentia removes named non-basic-land-name cards from graveyard, hand, and library; Surgical Extraction needs a graveyard card.
  • Failure modes: 2 life matters against burn and aggro; cannot take lands or cards not in hand.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: bring against fast combo, counterspell-heavy control, and hate cards that must be removed before resolution.
  • Low-skill guidance: take the card that stops your current plan or wins for the opponent soon, not the most expensive card.

Necromentia

  • Deck role: Sideboard 1 copy, named-card extraction sorcery.
  • Role type: hate piece; interaction-discard; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: names a non-basic-land-name card and exiles any number of matching cards from target opponent's graveyard, hand, and library, giving Zombies for cards exiled from hand.
  • Timing: cast only when the name is known from revealed cards, public commander context, graveyard, hand information, or confirmed matchup data.
  • Inputs / outputs: pays {1}{B}{B}; choose a card name other than a basic land card name; search target opponent's graveyard, hand, and library for any number with that name and exile them; they shuffle and create a 2/2 black Zombie for each card exiled from hand this way.
  • Partners / packages: Thoughtseize confirms the hand first; Surgical Extraction can follow a graveyard target; Pithing Needle covers activated abilities instead of removing cards.
  • Role peers: Surgical Extraction is instant and graveyard-targeted; Thoughtseize disrupts one card in hand immediately.
  • Failure modes: poor against singleton diversified threats, unknown names, and boards where spending turn three does not affect the battlefield.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: bring against known single-card combo, redundant nonland win pieces, or commander decks with a specific noncommander engine card.
  • Low-skill guidance: never guess the name without public evidence; Necromentia is powerful only when the named card matters.

Surgical Extraction

  • Deck role: Sideboard 1 copy, instant graveyard-name extraction.
  • Role type: hate piece; sideboard bullet.
  • Deck-specific job: targets a nonbasic card in a graveyard and exiles any number of cards with the same name from that card owner's graveyard, hand, and library.
  • Timing: use after the key card reaches a graveyard and before the opponent can recur, flash back, escape, shuffle, or otherwise use it.
  • Inputs / outputs: {B/P} can be paid with {B} or 2 life; choose target card in a graveyard other than a basic land card; search that card owner's graveyard, hand, and library for matching names and exile any number, then they shuffle.
  • Partners / packages: sideboards with Thoughtseize, Necromentia, Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, and Bojuka Bog against graveyard or known-card combo.
  • Role peers: Bojuka Bog exiles a whole target player's graveyard; Scavenging Ooze exiles single cards repeatedly; Endurance bottoms a graveyard.
  • Failure modes: needs a legal graveyard target; weak against singleton commander cards and diversified threats; 2 life matters under pressure.
  • Matchup / visibility hooks: bring against graveyard combo, reanimation chains, flashback/escape engines, and known redundant combo cards.
  • Low-skill guidance: target the exact card that enables the opponent's next line, and do not spend 2 life if black mana is available and life is tight.

Interaction Priorities

  • Preserve the engine before answering ordinary threats: protect The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, and an active discard outlet such as Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, or Skirge Familiar over spending removal on medium attackers. Use Sylvan Safekeeper, Veil of Summer, or Noxious Revival only when the legal action text actually protects or recovers the engine piece that keeps the loop alive.

  • Remove graveyard hate first: aim Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Force of Vigor, Boseiju, Who Endures, or postboard Haywire Mite, Pernicious Deed, Thoughtseize, Necromentia, Surgical Extraction, Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, and Pithing Needle at cards that stop dredge, exile graveyards, prevent searching, stop activated discard, or turn off land recursion before they constrain the cleanup-step plan. If the hate piece is already active, do not start a Dakmor Salvage dredge/discard chain unless the line is forced by survival or the engine can win through the visible text.

  • Answer commander blockers second: remove cards that prevent The Gitrog Monster from resolving, staying in play, or drawing from sacrificed lands before answering combat-only pressure. Veil of Summer is a commitment shield against blue or black interaction when its legal text applies; Sylvan Safekeeper can protect a creature at land cost, but sacrificing a land may trigger Gitrog and may also reduce mana, landfall, or Cabal Coffers output.

  • Prioritize stack or hand disruption by timing, not habit: when postboard Thoughtseize is available, use it before committing The Gitrog Monster, Squandered Resources, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, or a tutor-defined win attempt. This deck has no native counterspell and no native bounce spell, so do not hold mana for non-existent counter/bounce lines; represent only Veil of Summer, instant removal, tutor, cycling, land activations, or graveyard interaction that the rules engine exposes.

  • Treat fast combo and deterministic engines as higher priority than creature damage: use Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Crop Rotation, Entomb, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, or Finale of Devastation to find interaction or engine acceleration according to the visible clock. Against combo, discard/extract/name the known payoff with Thoughtseize, Surgical Extraction, Necromentia, or Pithing Needle when postboard and legal; against creature swarms, prioritize Toxic Deluge, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Glacial Chasm, or Pernicious Deed over one-for-one removal.

  • Ignore low-impact permanents when the engine is close: do not spend Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Force of Vigor, or Boseiju, Who Endures on small creatures, mana rocks, or value enchantments unless they race lethal, stop the engine, or enable an imminent opponent win. Bait interaction with Tireless Tracker, Tireless Provisioner, Oracle of Mul Daya, Ramunap Excavator, or The One Ring before exposing The Gitrog Monster when the hand already has redundancy.

Combat And Trading Rules

  • Avoid combat as the primary win plan: this deck wins by resource loops, dredge replacement, land recursion, and graveyard conversion more often than by fair attacks. Attack only when damage is free, commander damage is a real clock, or a creature is not needed as a discard outlet, mana engine, dredger, tutor body, blocker, or sacrifice resource.

  • Preserve The Gitrog Monster over trading: do not attack or block with The Gitrog Monster into visible deathtouch, exile, bounce, theft, or multi-block trades unless lethal pressure, commander damage, or a protected line justifies it. Recasting from the command zone must account for commander tax and whether the deck can still hold up Veil of Summer, Crop Rotation, Abrupt Decay, or other relevant instant-speed actions.

  • Keep discard outlets alive: Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown carriers, and Skirge Familiar are usually worth more than their combat stats. Do not trade them for ordinary attackers while Dakmor Salvage, dredgers, Life from the Loam, or graveyard payoffs are online, unless the block prevents lethal damage or the outlet is redundant and the replacement outlet is already visible.

  • Trade expendable setup creatures before engines: Sakura-Tribe Elder, Springbloom Druid, Satyr Wayfinder, Stitcher's Supplier, and sometimes Dryad Arbor can block or be sacrificed when their enter-the-battlefield or utility job is already complete. Preserve Ramunap Excavator, Oracle of Mul Daya, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Lotus Cobra, Tireless Provisioner, Tireless Tracker, Elvish Reclaimer, and Sylvan Safekeeper when their ongoing text is driving mana, lands, protection, or cards.

  • Use life as a managed resource: take nonlethal damage if the alternative loses a key engine piece, but switch to survival mode when the visible board threatens lethal next combat or burn range. In survival mode, tutor or deploy Glacial Chasm, use Zuran Orb if legal, consider Toxic Deluge, and block with completed setup creatures before sacrificing the active discard/land-recursion structure.

  • Respect archetype differences: against aggro, trade early bodies and prioritize sweepers, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Glacial Chasm, and lifegain from Zuran Orb or postboard Scavenging Ooze when legal. Against control, pressure planeswalkers or life totals with spare creatures only after protecting the engine from interaction. Against graveyard mirrors or combo, combat is secondary to timing Bojuka Bog, Endurance, Surgical Extraction, Necromentia, Thoughtseize, or Pithing Needle around visible resources.

Selection And Tutor Rules

  • Tutor for the missing engine piece before tutoring for payoff: find The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, an active discard outlet, or land-recursion infrastructure before searching for Dread Return, Reanimate, Animate Dead, or large-mana finishers. Treat Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, and Skirge Familiar as outlet targets, with Skirge Familiar preferred only when the mana conversion is immediately relevant.

  • Use exact tutor zones and timing: Demonic Tutor can take the needed card to hand at sorcery speed; Vampiric Tutor and Worldly Tutor put the chosen card on top and should be paired with an immediate draw, dredge choice awareness, or upkeep timing; Entomb puts the chosen card into graveyard and is strongest for Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, dredgers, or a reanimation target already supported by Reanimate or Animate Dead.

  • Search lands by current bottleneck: use Crop Rotation, Expedition Map, and Elvish Reclaimer for Dakmor Salvage when the dredge loop is missing, Bojuka Bog against graveyard engines, Glacial Chasm under lethal combat pressure, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale against wide creature boards, Cabal Coffers with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth for mana, Bazaar of Baghdad for discard/draw pressure if legal and supported, and Strip Mine, Wasteland, or Ghost Quarter for visible problem lands.

  • Sequence draw and dredge deliberately: when The Gitrog Monster is on the battlefield and Dakmor Salvage is in graveyard, consider replacing draws with dredge only if milling two is acceptable, graveyard hate is not already constraining the line, and the loop has a bounded purpose. Do not replace a needed natural draw from Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Sylvan Library, The One Ring, Tireless Tracker, Barren Moor, or Tranquil Thicket if the top card or card volume is the reason for the action.

  • Treat self-mill as selection, not blind dumping: cast Grisly Salvage, Mulch, Satyr Wayfinder, and Stitcher's Supplier when graveyard access, land drops, or recursion are useful, but avoid feeding known opposing graveyard hate unless the line is forced. Prefer choices that produce a land plus recursion, a missing outlet, or a card that can be replayed through Crucible of Worlds, Ramunap Excavator, or Conduit of Worlds.

  • Use creature tutors by job: Green Sun's Zenith finds green creatures such as Dryad Arbor, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Elvish Reclaimer, Ramunap Excavator, Oracle of Mul Daya, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Lotus Cobra, Tireless Provisioner, Tireless Tracker, or Titania, Protector of Argoth according to mana and board state. Finale of Devastation can be setup or payoff; do not treat it as lethal unless the rules engine exposes enough mana, legal target, and combat consequence.

Priority And Stack Rules

  • Commit to The Gitrog Monster only when the next priority pass is acceptable: protect it with Veil of Summer against applicable blue or black interaction, Sylvan Safekeeper against legal targeted removal, or a recovery plan such as Noxious Revival, Reanimate, Animate Dead, or command-zone recast with commander tax. Do not start a fragile cleanup-step loop into visible graveyard hate or an exposed exile effect unless waiting loses the game.

  • Respect replacement timing on draws: dredge choices replace draws before the card is drawn, so choose natural draw when a tutored top card is needed and choose dredge when graveyard velocity is the selected plan. If multiple draw events occur, evaluate each one independently; do not assume one replacement choice covers all later draw prompts.

  • Use cleanup-step discard as an engine only with a bounded objective: discarding Dakmor Salvage during cleanup can create The Gitrog Monster draw triggers and further dredge decisions, but the pilot should stop once it has found protection, mana, a deterministic payoff route, or enough resources for the next turn. If the rules engine presents repeated cleanup prompts without a clear advancing state, prefer the finite line that preserves legality and avoids an unbounded loop.

  • Respond to hate before it resolves when possible: use Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Force of Vigor, Boseiju, Who Endures, or postboard Haywire Mite, Pernicious Deed, Thoughtseize, Surgical Extraction, Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, Necromentia, or Pithing Needle according to the visible legal action and timing. Graveyard exile must be used before the opponent pays flashback, delve, escape, or other graveyard costs if the goal is to deny casting; responding after the spell is already cast will not undo costs already paid.

  • Activate discard outlets at the last useful window: use Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, Skirge Familiar, and Bazaar of Baghdad when the discard produces a draw trigger, dredge access, mana, survival, or a protected commitment. Avoid discarding engine pieces into open exile unless recursion is already legal or the line wins through the hate.

  • Let low-impact spells resolve when holding scarce interaction: save instant-speed answers for cards that stop graveyard use, shut off activated abilities, exile The Gitrog Monster, prevent land recursion, or create imminent lethal. This deck has no registered counterspell, so priority decisions should represent real exposed actions such as removal, tutor, cycling, Crop Rotation, Noxious Revival, Veil of Summer, land abilities, sacrifice outlets, or dredge replacement choices.

Sideboard Map

  • Sideboard posture: add narrow hate only when it attacks a visible opposing plan harder than it slows The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, discard outlets, land recursion, and draw-replacement sequencing. This deck is already dense with engine pieces, so sideboarding should preserve a commander plan, at least one discard route, and enough lands or land tutors to make cleanup-step decisions bounded.

  • Endurance: bring in against graveyard combo, reanimation, dredge mirrors, escape, flashback, or opponents using their graveyard as a hand. Use it as a reactive graveyard-reset creature when the opponent has committed resources, not as generic pressure; it is weaker when your own graveyard is the only graveyard that matters or when the opponent wins through artifacts, enchantments, or the stack without graveyard dependence.

  • Collector Ouphe: bring in against artifact mana, artifact combo, and activated artifact engines when slowing the table matters more than your own Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, The One Ring, Zuran Orb, Expedition Map, and artifact recursion pieces. It is bad when your hand depends on artifact mana to cast The Gitrog Monster or when Zuran Orb is the active survival/land-sacrifice engine.

  • Haywire Mite: bring in when a cheap exile answer to a noncreature artifact or noncreature enchantment is more valuable than a broad sweeper. It is strongest against hate permanents that block graveyard use, activated abilities, or land recursion; it is weaker against creature-based pressure, spell combo, and permanents it cannot legally target.

  • Scavenging Ooze: bring in against creature graveyards, reanimation targets, recursive creatures, and engines where repeated targeted graveyard exile is better than a one-shot reset. It is bad when green mana is constrained, when the opponents key graveyard cards are noncreature cards, or when holding up activation mana prevents commander deployment.

  • Pithing Needle: bring in against a known activated ability that is visible, nameable, and central to the opposing plan. Prefer it for commanders, planeswalkers, graveyard-hate artifacts with activated abilities, fast mana artifacts with non-mana abilities, or lands whose activated abilities dominate the game; it is poor against triggered abilities, static abilities, spell-based combo, and unknown hands.

  • Pernicious Deed: bring in against wide creature boards, cheap permanent piles, token pressure, and mixed artifact/enchantment boards where a scalable reset protects time for the Gitrog engine. It is risky when your own battlefield contains Exploration, Burgeoning, Manabond, Tortured Existence, Oblivion Crown, mana artifacts, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, or creature discard outlets that you still need.

  • Sideboard Force of Vigor: bring in against artifact/enchantment hate, fast artifact mana, prison permanents, and enchantments that prevent the graveyard or land engine from functioning. It is bad when the opponent presents mostly creatures or spells and when exiling a green card would remove the only engine creature, tutor, or recovery spell from hand.

  • Thoughtseize: bring in against fast combo, counterspell-heavy control, graveyard hate that must be taken before resolution, and matchups where seeing the opponents hand changes whether to commit The Gitrog Monster. It is weaker against wide creature decks, late topdeck games, and tables where two life plus one-for-one discard does not buy a meaningful window.

  • Necromentia: bring in only when the opposing deck relies on one named nonland card and the pilot can name it from public information, revealed cards, commander identity, or prior game knowledge. It is bad against redundant midrange piles, unknown singleton threats, and boards where spending a turn naming a card does not answer the battlefield.

  • Surgical Extraction: bring in against graveyard combo, reanimation chains, known redundant combo pieces, and cards already in a graveyard that can be named and removed at instant speed. It is weak before a target card reaches a graveyard, against singleton commander threats, and when using it would not change the opponents next legal line.

Graveyard combo or reanimation pressure Side in: Endurance; Scavenging Ooze; Surgical Extraction; Thoughtseize Cut: Manabond; Tireless Tracker; The One Ring; Toxic Deluge

  • Plan rule: this plan trades slower card-advantage and risky hand-dump texture for stack-adjacent hand disruption plus graveyard interaction. Keep Life from the Loam, Dakmor Salvage, dredgers, and land recursion because the deck still needs its own engine; use Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, and Surgical Extraction surgically so they do not erase your own winning graveyard unless survival requires it.

Artifact or enchantment hate/prison table Side in: Collector Ouphe; Haywire Mite; Force of Vigor; Pithing Needle; Pernicious Deed Cut: Sol Ring; Arcane Signet; Golgari Signet; Talisman of Resilience; The One Ring

  • Plan rule: this plan accepts lower artifact acceleration to make Collector Ouphe asymmetric and increase answers to permanents that stop graveyard, land, or commander loops. Keep land-based acceleration and tutors, then use Haywire Mite, sideboard Force of Vigor, Pithing Needle, and Pernicious Deed according to exact legal targets rather than firing them at low-impact permanents.

Fast creature swarm or token pressure Side in: Pernicious Deed; Haywire Mite; Endurance Cut: Sylvan Library; Manabond; The One Ring

  • Plan rule: this plan prioritizes life total and reset access over slow incremental draw. Pernicious Deed is the main reason to board this way; Haywire Mite answers noncreature hate that can accompany creature pressure, and Endurance gives a flash body plus graveyard disruption when creature decks also use recursion.

Known single-card combo or commander-centric engine Side in: Thoughtseize; Necromentia; Pithing Needle; Surgical Extraction Cut: Toxic Deluge; Tireless Tracker; Oracle of Mul Daya; Mulch

  • Plan rule: this plan is for matchups where one named card, activated commander ability, or graveyard-card chain is the bottleneck. Use Thoughtseize to confirm the line before Necromentia when possible, use Pithing Needle only for activated abilities, and use Surgical Extraction only after the exact card is in a graveyard.

  • Add role cards: against graveyard decks, add Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, and Surgical Extraction, with Thoughtseize when the key card is likely still in hand. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow battlefield card advantage such as Tireless Tracker, slow draw-risk cards such as The One Ring, and hand-dump cards such as Manabond when opposing graveyard exile makes overcommitting dangerous.

  • Add role cards: against artifact/enchantment prison or hate, add Haywire Mite, sideboard Force of Vigor, Pernicious Deed, Pithing Needle, and sometimes Collector Ouphe. Reduce main-deck emphasis: artifact mana and artifact engines when Collector Ouphe is part of the plan, especially Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, and The One Ring.

  • Add role cards: against spell combo and counterspell-heavy control, add Thoughtseize, Necromentia when the card name is known, and Surgical Extraction when graveyard targets matter. Reduce main-deck emphasis: creature sweepers and slow combat-value cards when the opponent is not trying to win with creatures.

  • Add role cards: against creature swarms, add Pernicious Deed and consider Endurance as a flash blocker plus graveyard check. Reduce main-deck emphasis: life-payment and slow card-advantage engines when they do not stabilize before combat damage matters.

Matchup Guidance

  • Aggro: protect life total before building the full cleanup-step engine, because The Gitrog Monster is strongest after the game has already slowed enough for land sacrifice and dredge loops to matter. Prefer early blockers and land development from Sakura-Tribe Elder, Springbloom Druid, Satyr Wayfinder, Stitcher's Supplier, Dryad Arbor, and Ramunap Excavator; use Toxic Deluge only when the visible board and life payment produce a real stabilization window. Glacial Chasm, Zuran Orb, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Bojuka Bog, and land recursion can buy turns, but do not keep a hand that only survives if unsupported land utility appears later. Add role cards: Pernicious Deed, Haywire Mite when hate permanents accompany pressure, and Endurance when the opposing creature deck also uses graveyard recursion. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slow card engines such as Sylvan Library, The One Ring, and Tireless Tracker when combat damage is already the limiting resource.

  • Control: force the opponent to answer repeated must-stop engines rather than one all-in graveyard commitment, especially when open mana or known counters make The Gitrog Monster fragile. Lead with land recursion, Life from the Loam, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Exploration, Burgeoning, and incremental lands before committing Skirge Familiar, Oblivion Crown, or a discard-loop piece. Use Veil of Summer only when the stack or legal action text shows it can actually protect a key spell or punish blue/black interaction; do not spend it into irrelevant windows. Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, and Finale of Devastation should select redundancy or protection according to visible pressure, not always the fastest combo piece. Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Necromentia when a key nonland card is nameable, Pithing Needle for activated abilities, and Surgical Extraction only when graveyard targets matter.

  • Combo: identify whether the opponent wins from hand, battlefield, graveyard, or a named commander ability before choosing interaction, because this decks hate pieces answer different zones. Against hand or stack setup, prioritize Thoughtseize, Veil of Summer, fast The Gitrog Monster, and tutors for a faster deterministic engine. Against battlefield engines, preserve Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Force of Vigor, Haywire Mite, Pithing Needle, and Pernicious Deed until a real bottleneck permanent or activated ability is visible. Against graveyard combo, use Bojuka Bog, Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, Surgical Extraction, Noxious Revival, and Crop Rotation for Bojuka Bog timing, but avoid exiling your own Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, or dredgers unless the alternative is losing immediately.

  • Tempo: respect the opponents ability to pair small pressure with disruption, and avoid hands that need every spell to resolve in sequence. Develop mana through lands and low-cost permanents, then force them to answer The Gitrog Monster while you still have recovery through Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, Crucible of Worlds, or Conduit of Worlds. Do not overpay life into Sylvan Library, The One Ring, fetch lands, shock lands such as Overgrown Tomb, or Toxic Deluge if a single attack step would put the game out of reach. Darkblast, Abrupt Decay, and Assassin's Trophy should be aimed at creatures or tempo permanents that preserve a functional turn cycle, not at low-impact threats that do not affect the engine clock.

  • Midrange: win by making land drops and graveyard recursion more durable than one-for-one removal, not by racing every creature on board. Keep engines that convert lands into cards or mana: The Gitrog Monster, Life from the Loam, Tireless Tracker, Tireless Provisioner, Lotus Cobra, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Field of the Dead, and recursive fetch-land lines. Trade removal for pieces that stop recursion, pressure commander recasts, or threaten a fast clock; do not spend Abrupt Decay or Assassin's Trophy on replaceable bodies while a hate permanent or planeswalker-style engine remains available as a legal target. The Gitrog Monster commander-tax planning matters here: recast when it immediately draws from a land-to-graveyard event, blocks profitably, or unlocks a dredge/cleanup line, not just because the command zone action is legal.

  • Big mana: race their payoff timing while attacking mana engines when legal, because this deck can punish slow setup but cannot always beat repeated oversized spells after they resolve. Prioritize fast commander deployment, Squandered Resources, Skirge Familiar, land-drop engines, and tutors that assemble Dakmor Salvage plus discard access. Use Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Boseiju, Who Endures, Assassin's Trophy, and Crop Rotation for high-impact lands or permanents only when the visible target materially changes their next turn. Field of the Dead and Titania, Protector of Argoth can become fair pressure plans when the combo line is disrupted; do not sacrifice too many lands into Squandered Resources without a draw/recovery engine or lethal path.

  • Graveyard decks: treat the graveyard as a contested resource and time hate so it interrupts costs, recursion, or known loops without disabling your own plan unnecessarily. Bojuka Bog through land drops, Crop Rotation, or land recursion is strongest when the opposing graveyard is stocked and the action window is legal. Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, and Surgical Extraction should answer visible cards and known lines; preemptive exile before flashback, delve, escape, or reanimation costs are paid is different from trying to respond after a spell is already legally cast. Keep your own Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, and Darkblast available unless survival requires a reset.

  • Artifact/enchantment decks: separate hate that stops your engine from low-value permanents that merely add pressure, because Force of Vigor, Boseiju, Who Endures, Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Haywire Mite, and Pernicious Deed are finite. Answer graveyard lock pieces, permanent-based rule changes, and artifacts or enchantments that block land recursion before spending interaction on mana rocks or value permanents. Collector Ouphe is strongest when you can lean on lands, Exploration, Burgeoning, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, and creature mana/value instead of Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, The One Ring, or Expedition Map.

  • Go-wide decks: prioritize scalable resets and defensive land tools over narrow spot removal. Toxic Deluge, Pernicious Deed, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Glacial Chasm, Zuran Orb, and Field of the Dead are the main stabilizers; Darkblast is useful only when its legal target and repeated dredge texture actually reduce the clock. Do not use The Gitrog Monster sacrifice triggers or fetch-land loops only for cards if the visible board requires preserving blockers, life, or a reset window. When Pernicious Deed is present, count your own Exploration, Burgeoning, Manabond, Tortured Existence, Oblivion Crown, artifact mana, and creature outlets before choosing an activation size.

  • Single-threat decks: answer or blank the one threat cleanly, then use the land engine to pull ahead. Glacial Chasm, Zuran Orb, Maze-style assumptions must not be invented; this list has Glacial Chasm and sacrifice life tools, so use only those visible legal actions. Pithing Needle is for activated abilities, Necromentia is for a known nonland card name, and Surgical Extraction is for a card already in a graveyard. Against commander-centric pressure, commander damage, commander tax, and recast timing should guide whether to race with The Gitrog Monster, tutor for removal, or set up a defensive land loop.

  • Burn: life total is the primary resource, so reduce self-inflicted life payments unless they immediately prevent more damage or enable a winning line. Be cautious with Sylvan Library, The One Ring, Toxic Deluge, Overgrown Tomb, fetch lands, Vampiric Tutor, Reanimate, and Nurturing Peatland. Zuran Orb, Glacial Chasm, Sakura-Tribe Elder, blockers, and faster commander card flow are high value. Do not assume burn damage shrinks creatures; only use damage or removal according to the rules-engine target and result text.

  • Removal-heavy decks: demand exile-quality or repeated answers by sequencing redundant engines instead of exposing every discard outlet at once. Lead with replaceable enablers such as Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Tortured Existence, or land engines according to hand texture, then commit Skirge Familiar, Oblivion Crown, The Gitrog Monster, or Underrealm Lich when recast, recursion, Veil of Summer, or immediate value is available. Sylvan Safekeeper protects creatures by sacrificing lands, so use it only when the protected creature is worth the land loss and the visible removal actually targets a creature it can legally affect.

Specific Matchup Notes

  • General/archetype-only: no exact opposing decklists are supplied, so revealed cards, commanders, public zones, and rules-engine legal actions override every assumption here. Treat sideboarding as role selection rather than a fixed plan unless the Sideboard Map provides an exact exchange. Priority targets are permanents or spells that stop The Gitrog Monster, graveyard recursion, land drops, discard outlets, or survival locks.

  • Fast graveyard combo: Add role cards: Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, Surgical Extraction, and sometimes Thoughtseize or Necromentia when a specific nonland card name is known. Prioritize Bojuka Bog, Crop Rotation, Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, and Surgical Extraction around visible graveyard commitments; preempt costs when possible, and do not assume an already-cast flashback, delve, escape, or reanimation spell can be undone by later exile. Reduce main-deck emphasis: slower fair engines such as Tireless Tracker, The One Ring, or Titania, Protector of Argoth when they do not interact before the opposing critical turn.

  • Artifact or enchantment prison: Add role cards: Force of Vigor, Haywire Mite, Collector Ouphe, Pithing Needle, and Pernicious Deed according to visible hate. Priority targets are lock pieces that block graveyard use, land recursion, activated discard outlets, or draw replacement loops. Collector Ouphe weakens your own Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, Expedition Map, and The One Ring, so prefer it only when land-based mana and creature engines can carry the game.

  • Creature rush or token pressure: Add role cards: Pernicious Deed, Scavenging Ooze, and sometimes Haywire Mite when the pressure relies on a visible artifact or enchantment. Priority targets are damage engines, evasive lethal threats, and permanents that invalidate Glacial Chasm, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Toxic Deluge, or Zuran Orb. Reduce main-deck emphasis: life-costly or delayed cards such as Sylvan Library, Vampiric Tutor, Reanimate, and Nurturing Peatland unless they immediately find survival.

  • Control or removal-heavy midrange: Add role cards: Thoughtseize, Veil of Summer, Necromentia, and sometimes Pithing Needle for a known activated engine. Priority targets are stack interaction, graveyard exile, commander answers, and repeatable card-advantage permanents. Commit The Gitrog Monster, Skirge Familiar, Oblivion Crown, or Underrealm Lich when the line produces value immediately, is protected by Veil of Summer, or forces a recast window the opponent cannot punish profitably.

  • Big mana and commander-centric decks: Add role cards: Pithing Needle, Thoughtseize, Necromentia, Force of Vigor, or Haywire Mite only when they map to a revealed engine. Priority targets are mana engines, commander-enabling permanents, and lands vulnerable to Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Boseiju, Who Endures, or Assassin's Trophy. Race with Dakmor Salvage plus discard access when interaction is light; otherwise pressure with Field of the Dead, Titania, Protector of Argoth, and recursive land destruction.

Risk Summary

  • Mana risk: this deck needs black and green early while also using many utility lands that do not always cast spells on curve. Hands heavy on Bazaar of Baghdad, Field of the Dead, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Glacial Chasm, Barren Moor, or Tranquil Thicket need a real colored source, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, or a land-search line before keeping.

  • Matchup risk: fast decks can win before cleanup-step dredge loops matter. Prioritize Sakura-Tribe Elder, Toxic Deluge, Glacial Chasm, Zuran Orb, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Darkblast, Abrupt Decay, and Assassin's Trophy over greedy tutor chains when the visible clock is short.

  • Draw risk: Underrealm Lich, dredge replacements, Sylvan Library, The One Ring, cycling lands, Bazaar of Baghdad, and cleanup-step discard can create replacement-order complexity. Do not assume a draw happened if it was replaced by dredge, and do not start a loop unless the rules-engine prompts remain bounded and the library/graveyard state supports it.

  • Over-sideboarding risk: too many hate cards dilute discard outlets, land recursion, and commander payoff density. Keep enough of The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, Skirge Familiar, and land-drop engines to actually win.

  • Graveyard risk: opposing exile can break Dakmor Salvage, Life from the Loam, dredgers, Dread Return, Reanimate, Animate Dead, and Tortured Existence. Use Noxious Revival, Endurance, or sequencing discipline to preserve key cards when public information shows graveyard interaction.

  • Sweeper/removal risk: Toxic Deluge and Pernicious Deed can destroy your own discard outlets, land engines, tokens, artifact mana, and enchantments. Count your own board before resetting, especially Exploration, Burgeoning, Manabond, Tortured Existence, Oblivion Crown, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, and creature outlets.

  • Closer risk: the deck can draw many cards without converting them into lethal pressure. When combo access is disrupted, pivot deliberately to Field of the Dead, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Finale of Devastation, commander combat, or resource lock lines with Strip Mine, Wasteland, and recursion.

  • Interaction risk: spending Assassin's Trophy, Abrupt Decay, Force of Vigor, or Boseiju, Who Endures on low-impact permanents can leave no answer to hate. Hold finite answers for cards that stop the engine, threaten lethal, or invalidate the next planned line.

  • Sequencing risk: sacrificing lands to Squandered Resources, Zuran Orb, Sylvan Safekeeper, fetch lands, or Crop Rotation without The Gitrog Monster, recursion, or a survival need can strand mana and reduce future landfall. Treat commander recast tax as a real cost; recast The Gitrog Monster when it immediately stabilizes, draws, or enables a deterministic engine.

Test Feedback Checklist

  • Deciding factor: What single resource decided the game: The Gitrog Monster staying in play, Dakmor Salvage plus a discard outlet, repeated land drops, graveyard access, Field of the Dead pressure, Glacial Chasm survival, or an opponent stopping the engine?

  • Mulligan result: Did the opener contain green and black access, a credible early play, and either land recursion, a tutor, or interaction? Record whether hands with utility lands such as Bazaar of Baghdad, Strip Mine, Wasteland, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Glacial Chasm, Barren Moor, or Tranquil Thicket actually cast spells on time.

  • Mana development: Did Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Golgari Signet, Talisman of Resilience, Lotus Cobra, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Springbloom Druid, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, or Oracle of Mul Daya accelerate the commander, or did colorless and utility lands strand black or green cards?

  • Engine velocity: Did Life from the Loam, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Ramunap Excavator, Exploration, Burgeoning, Manabond, Squandered Resources, or Tireless Provisioner create enough actions before the opponents clock mattered?

  • Cleanup and dredge handling: Did cleanup-step discard, dredge replacement, Dakmor Salvage, Stinkweed Imp, Golgari Thug, Golgari Grave-Troll, and Darkblast prompts remain bounded and legal? Flag any repeated prompt loop, skipped replacement choice, or unclear draw-vs-dredge ordering.

  • Discard outlet quality: Did Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, Skirge Familiar, or Bazaar of Baghdad convert excess cards into progress, or did the pilot discard land recursion, protection, or the only closer too early?

  • Tutor discipline: Did Entomb, Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, Finale of Devastation, Crop Rotation, and Expedition Map find the right category for the visible board rather than defaulting to greed?

  • Interaction timing: Did Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Force of Vigor, Boseiju, Who Endures, Toxic Deluge, Veil of Summer, Bojuka Bog, Noxious Revival, and sideboard graveyard cards answer the cards that actually stopped the plan or threatened lethal?

  • Sideboard effect: Which of Endurance, Collector Ouphe, Haywire Mite, Scavenging Ooze, Pithing Needle, Pernicious Deed, Force of Vigor, Thoughtseize, Necromentia, and Surgical Extraction mattered, and which sideboard cards diluted engine density?

  • Closing pattern: Did the deck win or stabilize through Dakmor Salvage loops, Dread Return, Reanimate, Animate Dead, Titania, Protector of Argoth, Field of the Dead, Finale of Devastation, commander combat, or recursive land denial?

  • Role accuracy: Did the pilot correctly decide when to race, lock resources, preserve life, answer hate, or delay The Gitrog Monster until it generated immediate value?

  • Mistake audit: Record stranded cards, missed land drops, premature land sacrifices, unsafe Toxic Deluge, unsupported Manabond, wasted tutors, unnecessary commander recasts, and any card that sat in hand without a legal or tactical use.

  • Performance notes: Name overperformers and underperformers exactly, especially Underrealm Lich, The One Ring, Sylvan Library, Tireless Tracker, Tortured Existence, Zuran Orb, Glacial Chasm, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, and Bazaar of Baghdad.

First Tuning Questions

  • Engine density: Does the deck need more redundant discard outlets, or are Putrid Imp, Noose Constrictor, Wild Mongrel, Lotleth Troll, Oblivion Crown, Skirge Familiar, and Bazaar of Baghdad enough when opponents remove the first outlet?

  • Land recursion balance: Are Life from the Loam, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, and Ramunap Excavator sufficient, or does the deck draw too many recursion pieces without enough lands, tutors, or payoffs?

  • Mana composition: Do Cabal Coffers, Gaea's Cradle, Field of the Dead, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Glacial Chasm, and The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale cost too many colored-mana starts, even with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, and Dryad of the Ilysian Grove?

  • Aggro plan: Is the survival package of Darkblast, Toxic Deluge, Zuran Orb, Glacial Chasm, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Sakura-Tribe Elder, and sideboard Pernicious Deed enough against early creature pressure?

  • Control plan: Does the deck need more protection or discard beyond Veil of Summer, Sylvan Safekeeper, Thoughtseize, and Necromentia, or should it lean harder on threat redundancy and commander recast timing?

  • Graveyard vulnerability: Are Noxious Revival, Endurance, Scavenging Ooze, and Surgical Extraction serving both protection and disruption, or does graveyard hate from opponents still collapse the primary plan too often?

  • Closer reliability: When Dakmor Salvage loops are stopped, are Titania, Protector of Argoth, Field of the Dead, Finale of Devastation, Dread Return, Reanimate, Animate Dead, and commander damage ending games quickly enough?

  • Sideboard slots: Which sideboard card is least necessary: Collector Ouphe because it hurts own artifacts, Pithing Needle because targets are too matchup-specific, Necromentia because names require public certainty, or Haywire Mite because Force of Vigor and Boseiju, Who Endures already cover similar problems?

  • Role conflict: Are The One Ring, Sylvan Library, Tireless Tracker, and Tireless Provisioner improving fair games, or are they slowing the deck when it should focus on commander, dredge, and land-recursion execution?

  • Support validation: Do Bazaar of Baghdad, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Golgari Grave-Troll, and cleanup-step dredge prompts need additional card-reference metadata or engine proof before this strategy is trusted for automated testing?

Veles Tactical Policy

Policy: Keep Engine-Functional Openers

Priority: High Decision families: mulligan Cards: The Gitrog Monster; Dakmor Salvage; Life from the Loam; Sol Ring; Arcane Signet; Golgari Signet; Talisman of Resilience; Exploration; Burgeoning; Entomb; Demonic Tutor; Vampiric Tutor; Worldly Tutor; Crop Rotation Phase windows: opening hand, pregame mulligan Runtime cues: opening-hand cards, commander identity, visible mana sources Use when: choosing keep or mulligan for a Commander opener. Avoid when: the hand lacks green access, black access, and a path to either commander, land recursion, discard outlet, tutor, or early interaction. Instructions: Keep hands that can cast early acceleration or find a core engine piece while making colored land drops. Reject hands that are mostly colorless utility lands unless they already cast a tutor or stabilizing ramp. Pilot skill floor: Level 2 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Early Enabling Permanent Comes Before Greedy Value

Priority: Medium Decision families: mana; priority Cards: Exploration; Burgeoning; Manabond; Lotus Cobra; Sakura-Tribe Elder; Springbloom Druid; Ramunap Excavator; Oracle of Mul Daya; Azusa, Lost but Seeking; Dryad of the Ilysian Grove Phase windows: turns 1-3 main phase Runtime cues: legal cast actions for listed cards, available lands in hand or graveyard Use when: sequencing the first setup play before The Gitrog Monster. Avoid when: casting the setup card leaves no colored mana for a visible survival spell or interaction needed this turn. Instructions: Prioritize a permanent that converts lands into extra mana or extra land drops before fair draw engines. Do not deploy Manabond unless the hand can tolerate losing nonland cards or the payoff is immediate. Pilot skill floor: Level 2 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Commit The Gitrog Monster Only With Value Or Protection

Priority: High Decision families: priority; mana Cards: The Gitrog Monster; Veil of Summer; Sylvan Safekeeper; Dakmor Salvage; Life from the Loam; Bazaar of Baghdad; Putrid Imp; Noose Constrictor; Wild Mongrel; Lotleth Troll; Oblivion Crown; Skirge Familiar Phase windows: main phase, commander recast windows Runtime cues: legal cast The Gitrog Monster, available mana, visible outlet or land-recursion support Use when: deciding whether to cast or recast the commander. Avoid when: opponents show open interaction and the deck cannot draw from a land going to graveyard, protect the commander, or recast through commander tax soon. Instructions: Cast The Gitrog Monster when it immediately converts land sacrifice, discard, dredge, fetchland, or recursion into cards. Delay it when the table can remove it before any engine action and the hand has setup instead. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Return Commander To Command Zone Unless A Visible Reanimation Line Is Better

Priority: High Decision families: priority Cards: The Gitrog Monster; Reanimate; Animate Dead; Dread Return; Noxious Revival Phase windows: replacement/state-based commander movement prompts Runtime cues: action:commander_zone:yes, action:replacement:yes, commander moved to graveyard or exile Use when: The Gitrog Monster would move to graveyard or exile and a legal command-zone return action is offered. Avoid when: a visible legal reanimation plan is cheaper this turn, the commander is deliberately needed in graveyard, and the current pilot skill is allowed to reason about that exception. Instructions: Default to command zone because the commander is the engine, commander-tax tracking is preferable to losing access, and graveyard hate can strand reanimation plans. Pilot skill floor: Level 2 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Start Dakmor Cleanup Loop Only After Commitment Gate

Priority: High Decision families: priority; selection Cards: Dakmor Salvage; The Gitrog Monster; Putrid Imp; Noose Constrictor; Wild Mongrel; Lotleth Troll; Oblivion Crown; Skirge Familiar; Bazaar of Baghdad Phase windows: main phase discard outlets, cleanup step discard prompts, draw replacement prompts Runtime cues: legal discard action, dredge replacement prompt, The Gitrog Monster controlled Use when: deciding whether to initiate repeated Dakmor Salvage discard and dredge actions. Avoid when: visible graveyard hate, replacement effects, shuffle effects, or bounded-prompt risk can stop the line before it produces a controlled payoff. Instructions: Treat the first loop action as a commitment decision. Confirm The Gitrog Monster is active, a discard outlet or cleanup discard exists, and the pilot has a plan for stopping, shuffling, or converting resources. Pilot skill floor: Level 4 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Execute Selected Dakmor Discard

Priority: Medium Decision families: selection Cards: Dakmor Salvage; The Gitrog Monster Phase windows: legal discard action windows Runtime cues: action:discard Dakmor Salvage Use when: The line has already committed to Dakmor Salvage looping, The Gitrog Monster is controlled, Dakmor Salvage is in hand, and the legal action text is exactly a discard of Dakmor Salvage. Avoid when: The Gitrog Monster is not controlled or the legal action would discard a different card. Instructions: Choose the legal discard of Dakmor Salvage to create a land-to-graveyard trigger and prepare a dredge replacement on the next draw. Pilot skill floor: Level 2 No-API allowed: yes Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Replace Draw With Dredge Only For The Selected Engine Card

Priority: Medium Decision families: selection Cards: Dakmor Salvage; Stinkweed Imp; Golgari Thug; Golgari Grave-Troll; Darkblast Phase windows: draw replacement prompts Runtime cues: action:dredge Dakmor Salvage, action:dredge Stinkweed Imp, action:dredge Golgari Thug, action:dredge Golgari Grave-Troll, action:dredge Darkblast Use when: a dredge replacement action is offered for the card named in the current selected line. Avoid when: the current plan requires a natural draw, the library is low, or the offered dredge card is not the selected card. Instructions: Prefer Dakmor Salvage for Gitrog loops, Stinkweed Imp or Golgari Grave-Troll for graveyard volume, Golgari Thug for creature recursion texture, and Darkblast when repeatable small-creature removal matters. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Tutor For Category, Not Habit

Priority: Medium Decision families: selection Cards: Entomb; Vampiric Tutor; Demonic Tutor; Worldly Tutor; Green Sun's Zenith; Finale of Devastation; Crop Rotation; Expedition Map Phase windows: main phase, end step, instant-speed tutor windows Runtime cues: legal tutor or search action, known hand and battlefield needs Use when: selecting a search card or target. Avoid when: the intended target does not solve the visible bottleneck of mana, outlet, commander access, protection, hate, or payoff. Instructions: Find Dakmor Salvage or Life from the Loam for engine access, Bazaar of Baghdad or Field of the Dead for land-based plans, creature engines with creature tutors, and answers only when a visible threat or hate piece blocks progress. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Crop Rotation And Expedition Map Must Name Exact Land Jobs

Priority: Medium Decision families: selection; mana Cards: Crop Rotation; Expedition Map; Dakmor Salvage; Bazaar of Baghdad; Bojuka Bog; Boseiju, Who Endures; Cabal Coffers; Gaea's Cradle; Field of the Dead; Strip Mine; Wasteland; Ghost Quarter; Glacial Chasm; The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale Phase windows: instant-speed search, main phase artifact activation Runtime cues: legal search library for a land action Use when: choosing whether to spend a land tutor or sacrifice a land to Crop Rotation. Avoid when: sacrificing the land breaks colored mana or the searched land does not answer the present board. Instructions: Choose Dakmor Salvage for combo, Bazaar of Baghdad for discard velocity, Bojuka Bog for graveyards, Boseiju, Who Endures for artifact/enchantment/nonbasic pressure, Glacial Chasm or The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale for survival, and Field of the Dead for fair inevitability. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Protect Engine Before Fair Advantage

Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction; priority Cards: Veil of Summer; Sylvan Safekeeper; Noxious Revival; Force of Vigor; Abrupt Decay; Assassin's Trophy; Boseiju, Who Endures Phase windows: stack, removal response windows, opponent end step Runtime cues: opponent spell or ability targeting engine piece, visible hate permanent Use when: an opponent threatens The Gitrog Monster, a discard outlet, graveyard access, or land-recursion engine. Avoid when: the threatened card is replaceable and a more dangerous hate piece or lethal threat is already visible. Instructions: Use Veil of Summer only when its legal protection/draw condition matters. Use Sylvan Safekeeper when sacrificing a land is acceptable. Remove hate before spending protection on low-impact value pieces. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Spend Removal On Engine-Stoppers And Lethal Threats

Priority: High Decision families: interaction Cards: Abrupt Decay; Assassin's Trophy; Force of Vigor; Toxic Deluge; Darkblast; Boseiju, Who Endures; Bojuka Bog Phase windows: stack where legal, main phase, combat, opponent end step Runtime cues: visible permanent, legal removal action, opponent lethal pressure Use when: a resolved card stops graveyard use, land recursion, discard loops, commander survival, or presents lethal damage before the next engine turn. Avoid when: removing a generic value card leaves a known hate card, combo piece, or lethal attacker unanswered. Instructions: Use narrow removal first when it legally answers the blocker. Reserve Toxic Deluge for boards where life payment and own-creature losses are acceptable. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Use Graveyard Hate With Agency Awareness

Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction Cards: Bojuka Bog; Endurance; Scavenging Ooze; Surgical Extraction; Noxious Revival Phase windows: preemptive main phase, opponent graveyard-cost windows before spell casting, stack only where card text permits Runtime cues: visible graveyard card, legal exile or shuffle action Use when: an opponent graveyard card enables a visible recursion, delve, escape, flashback, reanimation, or combo line. Avoid when: the opponent has already paid a graveyard cost and the selected hate action cannot affect that spell. Instructions: Prefer preemptive graveyard action before costs are paid. Preserve who chooses cards for each effect and do not assume all graveyard hate can target a spell on the stack. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Combat Is Secondary To Engine Preservation

Priority: Low Decision families: combat Cards: The Gitrog Monster; Stinkweed Imp; Golgari Thug; Tireless Tracker; Tireless Provisioner; Titania, Protector of Argoth; Dryad Arbor Phase windows: declare attackers, declare blockers Runtime cues: legal attack or block actions, visible opposing attackers and blockers Use when: choosing attacks or blocks outside a deterministic lethal turn. Avoid when: attacking taps a needed blocker, risks a discard outlet or engine body, or exposes the commander for minor damage. Instructions: Attack when damage is meaningful and the creature is not needed for survival or engine function. Block to preserve life total against pressure, especially when graveyard recursion makes the trade recoverable. Pilot skill floor: Level 2 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Convert Land Death Into Board Or Life Stabilization

Priority: Medium Decision families: priority; mana Cards: Zuran Orb; Squandered Resources; Titania, Protector of Argoth; Glacial Chasm; Field of the Dead; Life from the Loam; Crucible of Worlds; Conduit of Worlds; Ramunap Excavator Phase windows: main phase, combat survival windows, upkeep triggers Runtime cues: legal sacrifice land action, land-recursion permanent active, lethal pressure visible Use when: sacrificing lands produces survival, mana for a decisive line, Titania tokens, Field of the Dead progress, or Gitrog draw. Avoid when: sacrificing lands strands colored spells, breaks commander recast mana, or only creates temporary value without a payoff. Instructions: Use Zuran Orb and Glacial Chasm for survival, Squandered Resources for committed turns, and land recursion to rebuild after the sacrifice. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Reanimate Only A Card That Advances The Current Plan

Priority: Medium Decision families: selection; priority Cards: Reanimate; Animate Dead; Dread Return; The Gitrog Monster; Skirge Familiar; Underrealm Lich; Titania, Protector of Argoth; Oracle of Mul Daya; Ramunap Excavator Phase windows: main phase, flashback windows where legal Runtime cues: legal reanimation action, target creature cards in graveyard Use when: selecting a reanimation target or deciding to pay Reanimate life. Avoid when: life loss, aura vulnerability, or sacrificing creatures for Dread Return leaves the deck dead to visible pressure. Instructions: Reanimate The Gitrog Monster for engine restoration, Skirge Familiar for combo mana, Titania for land-sacrifice pressure, and Ramunap Excavator or Oracle of Mul Daya for rebuilding when combo is not available. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Sideboard Without Diluting The Engine

Priority: Medium Decision families: sideboard Cards: Endurance; Collector Ouphe; Haywire Mite; Scavenging Ooze; Pithing Needle; Pernicious Deed; Force of Vigor; Thoughtseize; Necromentia; Surgical Extraction; Exploration; Burgeoning; Manabond; Tireless Tracker; The One Ring; Sylvan Library Phase windows: sideboard Runtime cues: known opponent archetype, revealed cards, game result context Use when: choosing sideboard changes under the Veles ten-card policy sideboard. Avoid when: adding answers removes too many discard outlets, land-recursion pieces, tutors, or mana accelerants. Instructions: Add exact hate for known graveyard, artifact, activated-ability, creature-swarm, or combo pressures. Reduce slower fair advantage or risky acceleration before cutting core engine cards. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes

Policy: Name-Based Disruption Requires Public Certainty

Priority: Medium Decision families: interaction; sideboard Cards: Thoughtseize; Necromentia; Surgical Extraction; Pithing Needle Phase windows: precombat main phase, sideboard, stack or graveyard windows where legal Runtime cues: revealed hand, visible permanent, graveyard card, known decklist from current match Use when: a card name must be chosen for discard, extraction, activated-ability shutdown, or library/hand search disruption. Avoid when: the name is only guessed from format familiarity and no match information or visible card supports it. Instructions: Choose names from revealed cards, battlefield permanents, graveyard cards, or confirmed matchup data. Do not name absent staples from memory unless the engine exposes them as known information. Pilot skill floor: Level 3 No-API allowed: no Light-model allowed: yes
