# Strategy Specifications
## Deck Name And Archetype
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
Sonic the Hedgehog is a Duel Commander, 100-card singleton command-zone deck with a registered 10-card Veles policy sideboard. The active validation contract reports 100 main / 10 sideboard, exactly 100 main-deck cards with singleton compliance outside basic lands, and a sideboard size legal for this Veles policy workflow. Do not apply 60-card constructed sizing checks to this deck.
Treat the strategy as a rogue Jeskai tempo-combo tribal shell, not a stock format archetype. The registered tags are combo and tribal, but the maindeck also contains a large density of cheap pressure, prowess-like threats, card selection, protection, and disruptive permanents. Runtime decisions should assume the deck wins by converting early board presence plus spell velocity into combat damage or a commander-enabled combo/engine line, while respecting that the exact commander text is not available here. Card text check required for Sonic the Hedgehog before asserting any deterministic commander loop, trigger, cost reduction, haste rule, draw rule, or tribal payoff.
Use Jeskai colors as the deck identity and mana baseline: red is the densest color, blue supports selection and stack interaction, and white supplies protection, removal, hate permanents, and sideboard answers. The mana base contains Command Tower, Mystic Monastery, shock lands, fetch lands, pain lands, fast lands, check lands, filter lands, Horizon-style draw lands, and basics. The pilot should value opening hands that cast one-mana red pressure or blue selection on turn one while preserving access to white for Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Faith's Shield, Mother of Runes, Path to Exile, and sideboard cards.
Classify the deck's main battlefield plan as low-curve pressure into tactical burst turns. Tin Street Dodger, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, Goblin Guide, Gingerbrute, Phoenix Chick, Fanatical Firebrand, Sawblade Scamp, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Bomat Courier, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Slickshot Show-Off, Storm Entity, Slith Firewalker, Hell's Thunder, Captain Lannery Storm, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and Sonic the Hedgehog all point toward tempo pressure, evasive damage, or spell-count payoffs. The agent should not wait for a perfect combo line when visible legal actions allow efficient damage while preserving interaction.
Classify the deck's protection and disruption package as part of the proactive plan rather than a pure control shell. Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Faith's Shield, Mother of Runes, Plumecreed Escort, Zephyr Sentinel, Whitemane Lion, Cathar Commando, Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Aven Mindcensor, and sideboard hate cards are intended to force through pressure or block opposing engines. Do not spend these cards casually when the visible board suggests they are needed to protect Sonic the Hedgehog, a scaling threat, or a lethal attack.
Flag legality and text uncertainty instead of inventing outcomes. Several cards may have Universes Beyond, Alchemy-like, or recent-printing text that a runtime rules engine must confirm, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Kilo, Apogee Mind, Malcolm, the Eyes, Masked Meower, Merry, Esquire of Rohan, Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder, and Plumecreed Escort. Card text check required for any unfamiliar triggered ability, alternate cost, combat restriction, or keyword interaction before routing no-API deterministic policies.
Opponent information status is unspecified. No opposing commander, decklist, archetype, or metagame target is supplied for this guide batch, so the pilot must infer opponent role only from public game actions, revealed cards, commander identity if visible, battlefield texture, graveyard/exile contents, life totals, mana, and rules-engine legal actions. In policy fields, name only registered cards from this deck; when discussing external threats later, prefix metagame examples with opponent: or keep them outside `Cards:` fields.

## Thesis
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
Sonic the Hedgehog assembles a Jeskai low-curve pressure board, protects the most important attacker or commander-enabled engine, and turns cheap spells into tempo-positive combat damage. The deck should open with one-mana pressure or blue selection, add a scaling threat or evasive body, then use Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Faith's Shield, Mother of Runes, Zephyr Sentinel, Whitemane Lion, or Plumecreed Escort to preserve the threat that is converting turns into damage.
Prioritize board presence before abstract card advantage unless the visible game state demands a defensive reset. The deck is not trying to become a long-game draw-go control deck, a pure prison deck, or a generic midrange pile; Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Aven Mindcensor, Cathar Commando, and the sideboard hate cards are tactical speed bumps that buy attack steps, not a substitute for closing the game.
Treat Sonic the Hedgehog as the central command-zone threat or engine only when the rules engine confirms its legal text and current actions. Card text check required before assuming Sonic the Hedgehog grants haste, extra combat, card draw, cost reduction, tribal scaling, evasion, or a deterministic combo. When the commander is legal and mana-efficient, prefer lines that put it into combat or protect it over low-impact cantrips that do not change the board.
Win by compressing the opponent's time to stabilize. Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, Gingerbrute, Tin Street Dodger, Phoenix Chick, Fanatical Firebrand, Sawblade Scamp, Bomat Courier, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Robber of the Rich, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Slickshot Show-Off, Storm Entity, Slith Firewalker, Hell's Thunder, Captain Lannery Storm, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and Sonic the Hedgehog all reward early damage, spell sequencing, or forcing awkward blocks. When the opponent is low, count visible burn and attack damage before choosing card selection or holding mana for marginal interaction.
Preserve tempo interaction for moments that protect the clock or stop a faster opposing engine. Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Magma Jet, Arc Trail, Path to Exile, Izzet Charm, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Cathar Commando, Null Rod, Cursed Totem, and Aven Mindcensor should answer blockers, combo pieces, sweepers, or high-impact setup when public information shows the exchange advances the race.

## Role Package
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Threats: Use Sonic the Hedgehog, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, Goblin Guide, Gingerbrute, Tin Street Dodger, Phoenix Chick, Bomat Courier, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Robber of the Rich, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Slickshot Show-Off, Storm Entity, Slith Firewalker, Hell's Thunder, Captain Lannery Storm, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Lightning Stormkin, Akoum Battlesinger, Ash Zealot, Loyal Apprentice, Kilo, Apogee Mind, Malcolm, the Eyes, Masked Meower, Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder, Merry, Esquire of Rohan, and Zealous Conscripts as pressure sources unless card text check required changes their role.
- Payoffs: Treat Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Monastery Swiftspear, Slickshot Show-Off, Storm Entity, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Kolaghan Stormsinger, Akoum Battlesinger, Captain Lannery Storm, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and Sonic the Hedgehog as cards that may reward spell count, attacking, or sequencing; verify exact text before committing a deterministic payoff line.
- Engines: Lean on Dreadhorde Arcanist, Bomat Courier, Robber of the Rich, Esper Sentinel, Spectral Sailor, Fiery Islet, Sunbaked Canyon, Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and any confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog text to keep pressure from running out of material.
- Velocity: Use Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Fiery Islet, Sunbaked Canyon, Spectral Sailor, and Bomat Courier to find lands, protection, burn, or the next threat; do not spend selection before deciding whether the current turn needs a land drop, a removal spell, or lethal damage.
- Interaction: Use Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Arc Trail, Magma Jet, Path to Exile, Izzet Charm, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Cathar Commando, Aven Mindcensor, Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Fanatical Firebrand, and Zealous Conscripts to clear blockers, disrupt combo turns, protect lethal pressure, or punish tapped-out opponents.
- Protection: Save Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Faith's Shield, Mother of Runes, Plumecreed Escort, Zephyr Sentinel, Whitemane Lion, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, and Izzet Charm for Sonic the Hedgehog, a scaling threat, or a lethal combat step when visible actions show a protected threat matters more than another body.
- Recursion: Use Dreadhorde Arcanist as the main spell-reuse card and treat Phoenix Chick, Hell's Thunder, Whitemane Lion, Zephyr Sentinel, and Plumecreed Escort as conditional repeat-pressure or rebuy tools only after checking current legal actions and card text.
- Mana: Build decisions around red as the base color, blue for selection and stack interaction, and white for protection and removal. Command Tower, Mystic Monastery, Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, Steam Vents, Flooded Strand, Scalding Tarn, Arid Mesa, Mana Confluence, Adarkar Wastes, Battlefield Forge, Shivan Reef, Rugged Prairie, Cascade Bluffs, Seachrome Coast, Spirebluff Canal, Inspiring Vantage, Glacial Fortress, Clifftop Retreat, Prairie Stream, Sundown Pass, Fiery Islet, Sunbaked Canyon, Island, Mountain, and Plains should support early red pressure plus timely blue or white interaction.
- Sideboard: Use Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Wear // Tear, Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, Containment Priest, Swords to Plowshares, Abrade, and Pithing Needle as matchup-specific upgrades that preserve the deck's pressure plan while answering visible blue interaction, red pressure, artifacts, enchantments, graveyards, activated abilities, creature combo, or single high-impact permanents.

## Primary Win Conditions
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Pressure clock: Open on Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, Gingerbrute, Tin Street Dodger, Phoenix Chick, Fanatical Firebrand, Sawblade Scamp, Bomat Courier, Dragon's Rage Channeler, or Esper Sentinel, then add Sonic the Hedgehog or a second evasive/scaling threat before the opponent stabilizes. Execute by sequencing attacks first when damage is already lethal or near-lethal, and sequence Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, or protection spells before combat only when they improve attack legality, prowess-style damage, selection, or survival. Disruption that matters most is cheap removal, sweepers, lifegain, larger blockers, and activated/permanent engines that race the board. Prioritize this path when the opening hand has red mana, one-drop pressure, and at least one follow-up threat or protection spell.
- Spell-pressure kill: Build around Monastery Swiftspear, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Slickshot Show-Off, Storm Entity, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Kolaghan Stormsinger, and Sonic the Hedgehog when legal text confirms a spell-count or tempo payoff. Execute by holding cheap spells until they either remove blockers, trigger visible combat scaling, protect a key attacker, or produce a decisive damage burst. Disruption includes instant removal in response to pump/trigger stacking, graveyard hate against Dreadhorde Arcanist, and counters on the payoff threat. Prioritize this path when a scaling creature is already on board and the legal action list offers multiple cheap spells that affect combat or card flow this turn.
- Burn-and-attack finish: Use Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Magma Jet, Arc Trail, Izzet Charm, Fanatical Firebrand, Hell's Thunder, and hasty or evasive attackers to finish games after early pressure. Execute by counting public life totals, visible blockers, available red mana, and whether burn must clear a blocker or can go to the opponent. Disruption includes lifegain, prevention, counterspells, and losing a land to Shard Volley before a needed follow-up. Prioritize this path when the opponent is within one to two attack steps and direct damage turns a contested board into a forced answer.
- Protected commander or marquee threat: Treat Sonic the Hedgehog, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Captain Lannery Storm, Robber of the Rich, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, and Stormchaser Mage as threat-priority cards when they are already producing damage or material. Card text check required for Sonic the Hedgehog, Kilo, Apogee Mind, Malcolm, the Eyes, Masked Meower, Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder, Merry, Esquire of Rohan, and Plumecreed Escort before assigning deterministic engine value. Execute by reserving Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Faith's Shield, Mother of Runes, Zephyr Sentinel, Whitemane Lion, Plumecreed Escort, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, or Izzet Charm for the removal spell, sweeper, or blocker interaction that would break the clock. Prioritize this path when one protected permanent is worth more than deploying another small attacker.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Secondary Win Conditions
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Evasive chip damage: Use Gingerbrute, Tin Street Dodger, Phoenix Chick, Lightning Stormkin, Spectral Sailor, Delver of Secrets, Robber of the Rich, Hell's Thunder, and any confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog evasion to keep attacking through stalled boards. Choose this line when ground combat is poor but the opponent's life total is already pressured.
- Value pressure: Use Bomat Courier, Robber of the Rich, Esper Sentinel, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Spectral Sailor, Fiery Islet, Sunbaked Canyon, Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Dragon's Rage Channeler, and Laelia, the Blade Reforged to convert time into cards or card quality without abandoning attacks. Choose this line when the opponent has answered the first wave but has not presented a faster kill.
- Recursion and rebuy: Use Dreadhorde Arcanist for cheap spell reuse when legal targets are visible, and use Phoenix Chick, Hell's Thunder, Whitemane Lion, Zephyr Sentinel, or Plumecreed Escort only according to current legal actions and confirmed card text. Choose this line when trades have happened and replaying one burn, selection, or protection spell can restore tempo.
- Disruption lock support: Use Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Aven Mindcensor, Cathar Commando, Path to Exile, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, and Izzet Charm to keep the opponent from executing a stronger engine while small creatures finish the game. Choose this line when the hate card clearly constrains visible opposing permanents or known public strategy and does not prevent the deck from closing.
- Swing-turn fallback: Use Zealous Conscripts, Captain Lannery Storm, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Akoum Battlesinger, Skitter of Lizards, Rabbit Battery, and Kolaghan Stormsinger as conditional burst or board-swing cards. Card text check required before treating any of these as deterministic combo pieces; choose the line only when legal actions show immediate pressure, haste, theft, pump, or mana value.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Emergency Lines
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Behind on life: Stop racing when visible opposing attacks or burn can kill first; spend Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Arc Trail, Magma Jet, Path to Exile, Izzet Charm, Fanatical Firebrand, Mother of Runes, Brave the Elements, Faith's Shield, Gods Willing, Zephyr Sentinel, Whitemane Lion, or Plumecreed Escort to prevent the next decisive damage event before pursuing extra card selection.
- Behind on board: Clear the blocker or attacker that changes combat math, then rebuild with the cheapest threat plus protection instead of tapping out for a slow value spell. If no clean removal exists, use evasive attackers and preserve life with selective blocks rather than trading away the only clock without a follow-up.
- Behind on cards: Prioritize Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, Bomat Courier, Spectral Sailor, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Fiery Islet, Sunbaked Canyon, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Robber of the Rich, and Laelia, the Blade Reforged when the board can survive the turn. Do not cash in Fiery Islet or Sunbaked Canyon if the current or next turn needs that mana to cast protection, commander tax, or lethal burn.
- Behind on mana or colors: Make land drops over marginal spell sequencing, fetch or choose colors that unlock red pressure plus blue or white interaction, and avoid Shard Volley unless the damage is lethal or prevents a worse loss. Keep one-mana interaction available over deploying an extra small attacker when the opponent's next visible play is more dangerous than the added damage.
- Engines removed or commander taxed: Shift to singleton tempo rather than forcing the original plan; attack with any surviving evasive or hasty threat, reuse spells with Dreadhorde Arcanist if legal, and use burn as reach. If Sonic the Hedgehog is removed repeatedly, recast only when the legal board state shows it affects the race more than two cheaper actions.
- Graveyard or spell recursion shut off: Treat Dreadhorde Arcanist and Phoenix Chick as normal creatures until legal actions show recursion again, and win through board damage, burn, and sideboard-style hate permanents. Do not spend turns fighting graveyard hate unless the current hand depends on it more than the opponent's board depends on stabilizing.
- Primary win conditions gone: Preserve remaining threats carefully, convert protection into combat damage, and use Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Aven Mindcensor, Cathar Commando, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Path to Exile, and Izzet Charm to buy enough turns for small attacks and burn to finish.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Resource Model
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Life is a tempo resource, not a cushion: Spend life from Adarkar Wastes, Battlefield Forge, Shivan Reef, Mana Confluence, Fiery Islet, Sunbaked Canyon, Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, or Steam Vents when it enables an immediate threat, protection spell, counterspell, or lethal-reach line. Stop paying life casually once visible attacks or burn put the opponent on a faster clock.
- Hand size converts into pressure through cheap spell density: Prefer hands and turns that pair one attacker with one protection, burn, counter, or selection spell rather than holding cards for perfect value. Bomat Courier, Esper Sentinel, Robber of the Rich, Spectral Sailor, Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Fiery Islet, Sunbaked Canyon, Dragon's Rage Channeler, and Laelia, the Blade Reforged are the main ways to turn time into more cards or better cards.
- Mana converts into damage by double-spelling: The deck usually wants to deploy a cheap threat and still represent Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Path to Exile, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, or Izzet Charm. A slower single spell is correct only when it is Sonic the Hedgehog, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Captain Lannery Storm, Zealous Conscripts, a hate permanent, or a card whose current legal text changes the race immediately.
- Board presence is both clock and spell multiplier: Monastery Swiftspear, Stormchaser Mage, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Goblin Guide, Tin Street Dodger, Gingerbrute, Phoenix Chick, Lightning Stormkin, and Sonic the Hedgehog reward acting before combat when the spell changes power, evasion, or survivability. Do not trade away the only evasive clock unless the visible blocker or attacker would otherwise decide the game.
- Graveyard value is conditional and public: Treat Dreadhorde Arcanist, Phoenix Chick, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Hell's Thunder, and any visible graveyard synergies as resources only when legal actions confirm they are usable. Rest in Peace changes both players' graveyard plans; bring or keep it only when its disruption outweighs disabling your own graveyard-dependent value.
- Exile is an opportunity zone only when legal actions show it: Robber of the Rich and Laelia, the Blade Reforged can create temporary resources, but do not assume playable cards, timing, colors, or permission beyond the rules-engine output. Card text check required for Sonic the Hedgehog, Kilo, Apogee Mind, Malcolm, the Eyes, Masked Meower, Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder, Merry, Esquire of Rohan, and Plumecreed Escort before treating exile, tokens, protection, or attack triggers as deterministic engines.
- Lands are spell slots after the third or fourth land: Fiery Islet and Sunbaked Canyon can become cards when flooding, but keep them if current turns need colored mana for protection plus burn or commander tax. Shard Volley spends a land only when the damage is lethal, removes a creature that would win the race, or converts an otherwise dead land into a decisive tempo swing.
- Sacrifice fodder is scarce: Fanatical Firebrand, Bomat Courier, treasures from Captain Lannery Storm, and expendable small attackers may become resources, but do not sacrifice pressure without checking whether the same permanent is needed for combat, protection, or a future legal action. Use Cathar Commando as removal when the target is visible and higher value than the body.
- Information converts into commitment timing: Use Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Esper Sentinel triggers, Robber of the Rich reveals, public graveyards, and known sideboard cards to decide whether to race, hold up protection, or deploy Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Aven Mindcensor, Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, Containment Priest, Pithing Needle, Wear // Tear, Abrade, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, or Swords to Plowshares.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Mana Guide
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Keep mana that casts pressure early: A keepable opener usually needs two usable lands or one land with Ponder or Brainstorm plus a clear path to red mana. Red is the primary color for Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Rabbit Battery, Phoenix Chick, Fanatical Firebrand, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Reckless Lackey, Sawblade Scamp, Tin Street Dodger, and most reach; hands without red need strong blue or white interaction plus a fast route to red.
- Prioritize color pairs by hand texture: Fetch or choose red-white when protection and removal are the hand's bridge, red-blue when cantrips, counters, and prowess threats matter, and blue-white only when the hand is mostly interaction plus selection. Command Tower and Mana Confluence are best held as flexible fixers until another land has committed a color bottleneck.
- Sequence tapped lands before tactical turns: Mystic Monastery and Prairie Stream are slow unless the turn has no one-mana play or the hand needs all three colors later. Glacial Fortress, Clifftop Retreat, Sundown Pass, Seachrome Coast, Inspiring Vantage, Spirebluff Canal, and Prairie Stream should be sequenced around their entry conditions and the need to keep one mana open.
- Fetch with the next two turns in mind: Flooded Strand, Scalding Tarn, and Arid Mesa should find Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, Steam Vents, Island, Mountain, or Plains according to visible color needs, life pressure, and whether Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Path to Exile, Brave the Elements, or burn must remain available. Do not shock unnecessarily when a basic or already-untapped dual preserves the same legal line.
- Play lands before draw spells when mana use is already known: If the turn requires casting a one-drop, holding up Spell Pierce, using Path to Exile, or paying for protection, make the land drop first to preserve priority and avoid missing tempo. Wait to play a land before Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, or Dragon's Rage Channeler only when the selection can choose between land types, fetch timing, or Fiery Islet and Sunbaked Canyon cash-in lines.
- Keep utility lands functional before cycling them: Fiery Islet and Sunbaked Canyon draw only when flooding, when the extra card is needed immediately, or when holding the land no longer changes a double-spell turn. Avoid sacrificing them if Sonic the Hedgehog commander tax, Zealous Conscripts, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Captain Lannery Storm, or a protected burn finish needs that mana next turn.
- Mulligan mana-light hands without a functional first turn: Ship one-land hands that cannot cast Ponder, Brainstorm, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Esper Sentinel, Mother of Runes, or similar early action from the visible land. Also ship hands with only colorless utility value, only tapped access, or no path to the hand's protection and interaction colors by turn two.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Mulligan Guide
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Strong keep: Keep two-land red-based hands with one early threat plus one cheap spell, such as Mountain plus Command Tower with Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Lightning Bolt, Spell Pierce, Ponder, and Gods Willing. This hand pressures immediately, protects tempo, and can double-spell before the opponent stabilizes.
- Strong keep: Keep one-land blue selection hands only when the land casts the selection and the hand has a clear payoff, such as Island with Ponder, Brainstorm, Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Lightning Bolt, and a fetch land visible in the selection plan. Do not keep one-land Brainstorm hands without a shuffle effect or a second redraw unless the matchup punishes slow hands less than a mulligan.
- Medium keep: Keep two-land hands with Esper Sentinel, Mother of Runes, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, or Dreadhorde Arcanist when colors line up by turn two. These hands need the first permanent to survive, so prefer them on the play or when protection such as Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, or Plumecreed Escort is already present.
- Medium keep: Keep hands with Null Rod, Cursed Totem, or Aven Mindcensor only when the opposing strategy is visibly or matchup-known to depend on those effects and the hand still has pressure. A hand that only presents hate without Goblin Guide, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, Sonic the Hedgehog, or a cantrip is too slow for many unknown games.
- Risky keep: Treat three-land hands with only reactive cards such as Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Path to Exile, and Magma Jet as matchup-dependent rather than default keeps. Keep them against faster combo or commander-centric openings; ship them when the opponent can ignore permission and win through board presence.
- Automatic ship: Ship hands with no red source and no Ponder or Brainstorm unless the hand already casts Esper Sentinel, Mother of Runes, Path to Exile, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, or Delver of Secrets and has a visible route to red by turn two. The deck's fastest starts and reach depend heavily on red mana.
- Automatic ship: Ship hands with only tapped or delayed mana and no turn-one action, especially Mystic Monastery plus Prairie Stream style hands without Ponder, Brainstorm, or Esper Sentinel. This deck cannot spend the first two turns fixing while claiming to race.
- Matchup-dependent keep: Keep Sonic the Hedgehog hands when the mana casts the commander on curve and the rest of the hand either protects it or clears blockers. Card text check required for Sonic the Hedgehog, so do not assume a specific trigger or combo output unless legal actions expose it.
- Play/draw adjustment: On the play, prefer one-drop threat plus protection over cantrip-heavy sculpting. On the draw, keep more interaction-heavy hands because Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Path to Exile, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, and Izzet Charm can prevent falling behind before the second threat lands.
- Trap hand: Do not keep multiple heroic-looking protection cards with no creature worth protecting. Brave the Elements, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Mother of Runes, and Plumecreed Escort need a clock or a decisive commander line; without one, they do not advance the game.
- Trap hand: Do not keep Shard Volley as ordinary early interaction when the hand is land-light. Shard Volley is a finisher or emergency removal spell, not a plan that fixes a weak opener.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Turn Arc
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Turn 1: Lead with a red one-drop when possible: Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Tin Street Dodger, Phoenix Chick, Fanatical Firebrand, Rabbit Battery, Reckless Lackey, Sawblade Scamp, or Gingerbrute. Prefer Esper Sentinel or Mother of Runes when the hand needs protection or taxation more than raw damage.
- Turn 1 deviation: Cast Ponder or Brainstorm before a threat only when the hand needs a land, a missing color, or a specific one-drop to function. Use Delver of Secrets as the blue pressure start when the mana does not support red but the hand has enough instants or sorceries to reward it.
- Turn 2: Add a scaling threat or protect the first one. Preferred plays include Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Lightning Stormkin, Robber of the Rich, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Ash Zealot, Bomat Courier, Spectral Sailor, Cathar Commando, or holding up Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, or Path to Exile.
- Turn 2 deviation: Deploy Null Rod or Cursed Totem when the opponent's visible plan is meaningfully weakened and your board already has pressure or the hate buys a full turn. Do not spend turn two on hate against a creature race unless the legal board state shows it matters immediately.
- Turn 3: Commit Sonic the Hedgehog, Captain Lannery Storm, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Slickshot Show-Off plus spell, or a protected double-spell turn when mana allows. Card text check required for Kilo, Apogee Mind, Malcolm, the Eyes, Masked Meower, Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder, Merry, Esquire of Rohan, and Plumecreed Escort; use them according to visible legal actions, not assumed synergy.
- Turn 3 deviation: Use Arc Trail, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, or Path to Exile before combat when it opens attacks, triggers prowess-style pressure, or prevents a lethal crackback. Hold burn for reach only when the board race is already favorable.
- Turns 4-5: Convert tempo into a decisive attack or protected engine turn. Zealous Conscripts, Hell's Thunder, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Sonic the Hedgehog, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Robber of the Rich, Bomat Courier, Fiery Islet, and Sunbaked Canyon should turn excess mana or temporary resources into damage or cards.
- Turns 4-5 deviation: Preserve mana for interaction when the opponent can win on their next turn. Leaving up Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Path to Exile, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, or Cathar Commando is correct when tapping out only adds redundant damage.
- Late game: Treat every draw as either reach, protection, or a final threat. Cash in Fiery Islet and Sunbaked Canyon when mana is no longer the bottleneck, use Shard Volley only for lethal or survival, and use Zealous Conscripts or Hell's Thunder as closing pressure rather than midgame filler.
- Late game deviation: If the first wave is answered, rebuild with evasive or recursive pressure from Phoenix Chick, Spectral Sailor, Lightning Stormkin, Tin Street Dodger, Gingerbrute, Robber of the Rich, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and any legal commander action. Do not assume graveyard, exile, or commander-zone permissions beyond the rules-engine prompt.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Card Roles
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Commander role: Sonic the Hedgehog is the named build-around and should be treated as the highest-context threat, not a generic three-drop. Card text check required; cast it when legal actions and visible mana support a protected pressure or combo turn, and avoid assuming any trigger, haste line, or deterministic payoff unless the rules engine exposes it.
- One-drop pressure: Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Tin Street Dodger, Phoenix Chick, Fanatical Firebrand, Rabbit Battery, Reckless Lackey, Sawblade Scamp, Gingerbrute, Delver of Secrets, and Bomat Courier are the deck's opening tempo package. Lead with the creature that attacks soonest through the visible board; hold Fanatical Firebrand when one damage can answer a blocker or protect a larger attack; hold Bomat Courier longer only when immediate attacking is unsafe and card storage matters.
- Scaling threats: Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Slickshot Show-Off, Storm Entity, Slith Firewalker, Kolaghan Stormsinger, Akoum Battlesinger, and Monastery Swiftspear turn cheap spells or creature density into burst damage. Commit one scaling body before cantrips or burn when the opponent is not threatening removal; hold extra scaling threats when a sweeper or exposed blocker makes a single protected attacker better than overextension. Card text check required for Kolaghan Stormsinger if legal actions imply a mode, kicker, or alternative timing choice.
- Evasive clocks: Lightning Stormkin, Tin Street Dodger, Gingerbrute, Phoenix Chick, Spectral Sailor, Hell's Thunder, and Robber of the Rich convert stalled boards into damage. Prefer these when ground combat is clogged, when the opponent is low enough for burn reach, or when protection can force through a final swing; do not trade evasive bodies for small blockers unless survival requires it.
- Value attackers: Dreadhorde Arcanist, Robber of the Rich, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Captain Lannery Storm, Bomat Courier, Loyal Apprentice, and Spectral Sailor reward surviving combat. Protect them over disposable one-drops when their attack trigger, card access, Treasure, token, or draw ability is visible and relevant; attack only when the expected exchange keeps the engine alive or the damage race clearly favors you.
- Protection package: Mother of Runes, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Plumecreed Escort, Zephyr Sentinel, and Whitemane Lion preserve the key creature or force damage. Use them proactively only to secure lethal, a commander turn, or a high-value attack; otherwise keep mana open and respond to removal, combat blowouts, or damage prevention needs. Card text check required for Plumecreed Escort if the engine exposes a protection, sacrifice, or targeting choice.
- Flash and bounce tools: Whitemane Lion, Zephyr Sentinel, Deceiver Exarch, and Spectral Sailor let the deck play at instant speed after representing interaction. Use Whitemane Lion or Zephyr Sentinel to save a creature, reuse a valuable enter trigger, or maintain pressure while dodging removal; do not bounce a threat just for activity if it costs the next attack. Deceiver Exarch is primarily a tempo and surprise-combat card here unless the rules engine exposes a stronger legal target.
- Permission: Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, and sometimes Aven Mindcensor protect tempo from high-impact noncreature plays and search effects. Spend them on cards that answer your protected clock, establish an opponent engine, or win immediately; do not counter low-impact removal if Mother of Runes, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Plumecreed Escort, Whitemane Lion, or Zephyr Sentinel can answer it more efficiently.
- Removal and reach: Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Magma Jet, Arc Trail, Shard Volley, Path to Exile, Izzet Charm, Fanatical Firebrand, Cathar Commando, and Zealous Conscripts clear blockers or end games. Use Lightning Bolt and Burst Lightning flexibly; use Magma Jet when scry materially improves the next draw; use Arc Trail when it creates a two-for-one or opens combat; reserve Shard Volley for lethal or emergency survival because sacrificing a land can strand multi-spell turns.
- Disruption permanents: Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Aven Mindcensor, Cathar Commando, and Esper Sentinel tax or restrict opposing engines while pressure attacks. Deploy Null Rod or Cursed Totem only when the visible opponent plan depends on the affected abilities or artifacts; do not slow your own clock for a hate piece that does not change the next turn cycle. Cathar Commando should stay available when a visible artifact or enchantment matters more than two damage.
- Card selection: Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Fiery Islet, and Sunbaked Canyon smooth the singleton deck's uneven draws. Cast Ponder early to find land, color, or a first threat; cast Brainstorm when a shuffle from Flooded Strand, Scalding Tarn, or Arid Mesa can clear weak cards, or when instant-speed card hiding matters. Cash in Fiery Islet and Sunbaked Canyon only after land drops stop enabling double-spell or commander-tax turns.
- Tribal and spell-cost pieces: Kaza, Roil Chaser, Akoum Battlesinger, Kolaghan Stormsinger, Stormchaser Mage, Lightning Stormkin, Threnody Singer, and any legal Sonic the Hedgehog synergy should be piloted from visible rules text. Card text check required for Threnody Singer and Sonic the Hedgehog; use them according to exposed legal actions, not assumed tribal payoffs. Treat Kaza, Roil Chaser as a fragile setup piece when the hand contains spells worth reducing and as an attacker only when the board is clear.
- Commander-era specialty cards: Kilo, Apogee Mind, Malcolm, the Eyes, Masked Meower, Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder, Merry, Esquire of Rohan, and Plumecreed Escort require card text verification before strategic assumptions. When one appears in hand or as a legal action, prefer lines that match visible action labels: attack with it if it is clearly a pressure creature, hold it if it is clearly protective or reactive, and avoid building a combo line around unverified text.
- Burst closers: Hell's Thunder, Zealous Conscripts, Slickshot Show-Off, Storm Entity, Sprite Dragon, and Shard Volley are best when the opponent is already under pressure. Use Zealous Conscripts for lethal swings, blocker removal, or stealing a decisive permanent only when the legal target and outcome are visible; do not spend it as a generic five-mana creature if cheaper pressure or interaction is available.
- Small utility creatures: Ash Zealot, Cathar Commando, Esper Sentinel, Mother of Runes, Aven Mindcensor, Spectral Sailor, Loyal Apprentice, and Reckless Lackey bridge aggression and disruption. Cast Ash Zealot as efficient pressure unless the matchup makes its text specifically relevant; cast Esper Sentinel before other one-drops when taxation can slow the opponent; use Reckless Lackey and Loyal Apprentice according to visible attack and token or Treasure outputs.
- Lands: Command Tower, Mana Confluence, Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, Steam Vents, Adarkar Wastes, Battlefield Forge, Shivan Reef, Mystic Monastery, Glacial Fortress, Clifftop Retreat, Seachrome Coast, Inspiring Vantage, Spirebluff Canal, Cascade Bluffs, Rugged Prairie, Prairie Stream, Sundown Pass, Island, Mountain, and Plains are primarily color infrastructure for red-first pressure plus blue-white protection. Prioritize untapped red on turn one, blue for Ponder, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, and Delver of Secrets, and white for Mother of Runes, Esper Sentinel, Path to Exile, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, and sideboard interaction.
- Fetch and pain sequencing: Flooded Strand, Scalding Tarn, Arid Mesa, Fiery Islet, Sunbaked Canyon, Mana Confluence, Adarkar Wastes, Battlefield Forge, and Shivan Reef trade life for speed and selection. Pay life when it enables a turn-one threat, protected turn-two pressure, or exact interaction; conserve life against aggressive opponents once colors are established. Use fetchlands to fix colors, improve Brainstorm, and preserve untapped sequencing rather than to thin automatically.

### Card Hover Notes
#### Sonic the Hedgehog
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, command-zone core piece.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine payoff; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Sonic turns the deck's flash and haste creatures into a scaling combat team by putting +1/+1 counters on each creature you control with flash or haste whenever Sonic attacks.
- Timing: Cast when four-color mana is stable enough and you can attack soon or protect it; delay if the opponent is representing removal and you cannot hold Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, or Plumecreed Escort.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}{R}{W}; outputs haste damage, +1/+1 counters on eligible creatures, and tapped Treasure tokens when your flash or haste creatures are dealt damage.
- Partners / packages: Counter recipients include Whitemane Lion, Tin Street Dodger, Zephyr Sentinel, Monastery Swiftspear, Robber of the Rich, Lightning Stormkin, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Stormchaser Mage, Kolaghan Stormsinger, Storm Entity, Akoum Battlesinger, Slith Firewalker, Sprite Dragon, Reckless Lackey, Skitter of Lizards, Deceiver Exarch, Phoenix Chick, Rabbit Battery, Loyal Apprentice, Threnody Singer, Hell's Thunder, Ash Zealot, Slickshot Show-Off, Zealous Conscripts, Goblin Guide, Captain Lannery Storm, Cathar Commando, Spectral Sailor, Plumecreed Escort, Masked Meower, Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Kilo, Apogee Mind, Malcolm, the Eyes, Merry, Esquire of Rohan, and Aven Mindcensor.
- Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Laelia, the Blade Reforged as an attack-scaling threat and Sprite Dragon as a counter-based threat.
- Failure modes: Do not treat Treasure creation as proactive ramp; it triggers only when a creature you control with flash or haste is dealt damage and creates tapped Treasure.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against creature boards where counters let attackers outgrow blocks; protect it carefully against exile removal or bounce because commander tax quickly competes with double-spell turns.
#### Whitemane Lion
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, role player protection and flash body.
- Role type: protection/evasion; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Saves Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or another key creature from removal while leaving a flash creature that receives Sonic counters.
- Timing: Hold up {1}{W} when the opponent can target your best creature; cast proactively only if returning a creature will not cost a lethal or high-pressure attack.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes two mana and returns a creature you control to its owner's hand on entry; outputs a 2/2 flash body and a temporary dodge from removal or combat damage.
- Partners / packages: Best bounce targets are Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Robber of the Rich, Zephyr Sentinel, Plumecreed Escort, and Cathar Commando.
- Role peers: Zephyr Sentinel also bounces one of your creatures; Plumecreed Escort protects without removing the creature from combat.
- Failure modes: Its enter trigger is mandatory, so do not cast it onto an empty board or when returning your only attacker loses more tempo than the removal would.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against targeted removal and combat tricks; weaker against sweepers, sacrifice effects, and exile effects that do not target a creature you can save.
#### Tin Street Dodger
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Provides immediate red pressure and a mana sink that can keep damage flowing through boards without defender creatures.
- Timing: Lead with it when red mana is available and the hand needs a turn-one attacker; save {R} for the evasion ability only when that damage matters more than casting another spell.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; later consumes {R} to make itself unblockable except by creatures with defender; outputs haste damage and Sonic counter eligibility.
- Partners / packages: Gets bigger with Sonic the Hedgehog; protection from Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Mother of Runes, or Brave the Elements can force damage when the unblockable clause is not enough.
- Role peers: Gingerbrute has a similar evasion mana sink; Phoenix Chick and Lightning Stormkin provide flying haste instead of conditional unblockability.
- Failure modes: Do not spend red mana on the evasion ability when the opponent has no relevant blockers or when that mana is needed for Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Spell Pierce via fixing, or protection.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against ground stalls; poor against defender blockers, sweepers, and matchups where a 1/1 body cannot race.
#### Zephyr Sentinel
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash protection and evasive role player.
- Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Gives the deck a flash flyer that can save another creature you control while staying eligible for Sonic the Hedgehog counters.
- Timing: Hold for removal, bad combat, or end-step pressure; cast before combat only when flying damage or returning a creature unlocks a decisive attack.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; may return up to one other target creature you control; outputs a 2/1 flying flash body and sometimes a +1/+1 counter if the returned creature was a Soldier.
- Partners / packages: Saves Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and Stormchaser Mage; Soldier return bonus applies to Esper Sentinel, Zephyr Sentinel cannot target itself, and Cathar Commando is also a Soldier.
- Role peers: Whitemane Lion has mandatory bounce; Plumecreed Escort gives hexproof without bounce.
- Failure modes: Do not bounce a creature just to use mana if it removes a key attacker or resets counters from Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Storm Entity, Slith Firewalker, or Laelia, the Blade Reforged.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against targeted removal and flying races; watch for opposing instant-speed removal after you choose the bounce target.
#### Swan Song
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana stack interaction role player.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Protects your pressure from sweepers, removal-like instants or sorceries, and enchantment engines while trading the opponent a 2/2 flying Bird.
- Timing: Hold for an enchantment, instant, or sorcery spell on the stack that beats your board or stops lethal; do not counter low-impact setup while your mana is needed for pressure.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; counters target enchantment, instant, or sorcery spell; outputs a 2/2 blue Bird creature token with flying for that spell's controller.
- Partners / packages: Protects Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and burn finishers Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, and Shard Volley.
- Role peers: Spell Pierce and Izzet Charm counter noncreature spells with a {2} payment clause; Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast sideboard against blue spells.
- Failure modes: It cannot counter creature, artifact, planeswalker, or battle spells; the Bird can block Phoenix Chick, Spectral Sailor, Lightning Stormkin, Stormchaser Mage, Slickshot Show-Off, and Hell's Thunder.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against control, combo, and enchantment-based engines; less attractive against creature-heavy decks where the Bird changes combat.
#### Esper Sentinel
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana tax engine role player.
- Role type: engine piece; card selection; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Taxes the opponent's first noncreature spell each turn and can draw extra cards while also becoming a larger tax source if Sonic the Hedgehog counters it.
- Timing: Cast early before the opponent starts double-spelling; later, deploy only if the opponent's noncreature spells still matter or if Sonic counters can increase X.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; outputs a 1/1 artifact creature and a draw trigger unless the opponent pays {X}, where X is Esper Sentinel's power.
- Partners / packages: Sonic the Hedgehog counters increase the tax if Esper Sentinel has flash or haste? Esper Sentinel has neither, so Sonic does not counter it from its listed attack trigger unless another effect grants flash or haste; Rabbit Battery can give haste while attached, but the current text does not make Esper Sentinel a creature with haste while Rabbit Battery is attached unless equipped creature has haste.
- Role peers: Bomat Courier, Spectral Sailor, Robber of the Rich, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and Malcolm, the Eyes also convert time or attacks into cards.
- Failure modes: Do not assume it taxes every spell; it triggers only on each opponent's first noncreature spell each turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control, combo, and spell-heavy tempo; weaker when the opponent curves creatures and can ignore the tax.
#### Monastery Swiftspear
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana core pressure piece.
- Role type: threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Turns cheap noncreature spells into immediate combat damage while being a haste creature that benefits from Sonic the Hedgehog counters.
- Timing: Lead on turn one when red is available; cast Ponder, Brainstorm, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Gods Willing, or Spell Pierce before combat only if the prowess trigger changes damage, selection, or survival.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs haste attacks and +1/+1 until end of turn for each noncreature spell you cast.
- Partners / packages: Trigger spells include Ponder, Brainstorm, Swan Song, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Magma Jet, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Arc Trail, Lightning Bolt, Faith's Shield, Path to Exile, and sideboard Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Wear // Tear, Swords to Plowshares, Abrade.
- Role peers: Stormchaser Mage and Slickshot Show-Off also reward noncreature spells; Sprite Dragon keeps permanent counters instead of temporary prowess.
- Failure modes: Do not fire interaction into poor targets just to trigger prowess; the spell must improve damage, protect the clock, or answer a relevant permanent or spell.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against slow decks and removal-light starts; against creature decks, watch whether first strike blockers or larger bodies make temporary pump insufficient.
#### Robber of the Rich
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, two-mana value attacker role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine piece; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Pressures with reach and haste while stealing temporary access to the top card of the opponent's library when they have more cards in hand.
- Timing: Cast when it can attack immediately and your hand size is lower than the opponent's or likely to become lower after double-spelling.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs 2 haste damage, reach blocking, and exiled opponent cards you may cast during any turn you attacked with a Rogue.
- Partners / packages: Rogue attack permission comes from Robber of the Rich itself and Tin Street Dodger; any-color spending helps cast exiled cards, but timing and legality still follow the stolen card.
- Role peers: Laelia, the Blade Reforged exiles your own top card for this turn; Bomat Courier stores your own exiled cards face down.
- Failure modes: Do not assume card access if defending player does not have more cards in hand than you when Robber attacks; do not cast stolen cards at the cost of missing lethal damage.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control and midrange with full hands; reach matters against small flyers that race Phoenix Chick, Spectral Sailor, and Delver of Secrets.
#### Ponder
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, blue selection core piece.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Fixes the next draw sequence for a singleton tempo deck that needs the right land color, one-drop, protection, or burn at the right time.
- Timing: Cast before land drop when you need a specific land or color; cast after committing a threat when the turn already has pressure and you need next-turn protection or reach.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; looks at the top three cards, puts them back in any order, may shuffle, then draws a card.
- Partners / packages: Finds missing mana for Sonic the Hedgehog, Lightning Bolt, Spell Pierce, Gods Willing, and Path to Exile; improves Delver of Secrets reveal setup and Dragon's Rage Channeler spell count.
- Role peers: Brainstorm is instant-speed hand sculpting; Magma Jet filters while dealing damage; Izzet Charm can draw two then discard two.
- Failure modes: Do not shuffle away a stacked lethal draw unless the visible hand needs a different resource more; do not spend the only blue mana if Spell Pierce or Swan Song must remain available.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in unknown matchups for role discovery; against fast aggro, prioritize land and removal over slow value.
#### Lightning Stormkin
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, two-mana evasive pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Provides flying haste damage and is a clean Sonic the Hedgehog counter recipient.
- Timing: Cast on turn two when the opponent lacks a profitable flying blocker or when immediate damage matters more than holding interaction.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{R}; outputs 2 flying haste damage and a Wizard body for Kaza, Roil Chaser's cost reduction count.
- Partners / packages: Works with Sonic the Hedgehog counters, Kaza, Roil Chaser Wizard count, Merry, Esquire of Rohan legendary attack trigger only if another legendary attacks, and protection from Gods Willing or Faith's Shield.
- Role peers: Stormchaser Mage trades one power for prowess; Malcolm, the Eyes offers flying haste plus investigate on second spell.
- Failure modes: Do not run it into a known reach or flying blocker if a protected ground line or burn-removal line attacks better.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against ground stalls and planeswalker pressure; weaker against cheap flyers or removal-heavy tempo.
#### Kaza, Roil Chaser
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, spell-cost role player and evasive threat.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; mechanic enabler; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Reduces the next instant or sorcery spell this turn based on your Wizard count while also adding flying haste pressure.
- Timing: Cast when you can untap or immediately attack safely; use the tap ability before casting a relevant instant or sorcery when the reduction changes the turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{R}; taps to reduce the next instant or sorcery spell by {X}, where X is the number of Wizards you control as the ability resolves.
- Partners / packages: Wizards in this deck are Kaza, Roil Chaser, Lightning Stormkin, Stormchaser Mage, Delver of Secrets, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Slickshot Show-Off, and Aven Mindcensor.
- Role peers: Captain Lannery Storm produces Treasure by attacking; Cascade Bluffs and Rugged Prairie fix spell costs through lands.
- Failure modes: Cursed Totem shuts off Kaza's activated ability; do not cast Kaza as a ramp plan when your follow-up spells are creatures or when tapping Kaza removes necessary attack damage.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in spell-chain turns with Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Izzet Charm, Arc Trail, or sideboard Abrade; fragile against removal before the tap ability is used.
#### Gods Willing
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana protection role player.
- Role type: protection/evasion; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Protects one target creature you control or makes it unblockable by creatures of the chosen color while smoothing the next draw with scry 1.
- Timing: Hold for targeted removal or a decisive combat step; cast proactively only when protection from a visible color creates lethal or saves a key creature in combat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; target creature you control gains protection from the color of your choice until end of turn; outputs scry 1.
- Partners / packages: High-priority targets are Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Slickshot Show-Off, Stormchaser Mage, and Monastery Swiftspear.
- Role peers: Faith's Shield can target any permanent you control and has fateful hour; Mother of Runes repeats protection but must tap.
- Failure modes: It cannot target noncreature permanents and does not protect from colorless effects, sacrifice effects, edicts, or sweepers without damage/targeting/enchanting/equipping by the chosen color.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against colored removal and blockers; choose color from the actual spell, ability, or blockers visible in the game.
#### Stormchaser Mage
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, evasive spell-payoff role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Converts the deck's cheap noncreature spells into flying damage while staying eligible for Sonic the Hedgehog counters and Kaza, Roil Chaser Wizard count.
- Timing: Cast before a spell-heavy turn if it can survive; hold interaction instead when the opponent is likely to remove it before triggers matter.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{R}; outputs flying haste attacks and +1/+1 until end of turn for each noncreature spell you cast.
- Partners / packages: Works with Ponder, Brainstorm, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, and sideboard blasts.
- Role peers: Monastery Swiftspear is cheaper ground haste; Slickshot Show-Off gets +2/+0 per noncreature spell; Sprite Dragon grows permanently.
- Failure modes: Do not spend protection on Stormchaser Mage if Sonic the Hedgehog or Sprite Dragon is the real engine and Stormchaser's temporary pump will not change the race.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against ground creature boards and control; weak into cheap flying blockers or instant removal when you cannot protect it.
#### Kolaghan Stormsinger
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana haste role player and megamorph utility.
- Role type: threat/clock; modal utility; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Provides early haste damage or later uses megamorph to give another target creature haste for a surprise attack.
- Timing: Cast face up for immediate one-mana pressure; consider face-down {3} only when you have time and the face-up haste trigger will materially change a later combat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R} face up, or {3} to cast face down and {R} to turn face up; outputs a haste body and, when turned face up, target creature gains haste until end of turn.
- Mode map: Face-up {R}: simple 1/1 haste pressure and Sonic counter recipient. Face-down {3} then megamorph {R}: hides the card as a 2/2, later turns face up with a +1/+1 counter and gives target creature haste; this is wrong when the tempo loss costs early damage.
- Partners / packages: Haste target can enable Sonic the Hedgehog, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Sprite Dragon, or Zealous Conscripts if they entered without haste from their own text.
- Role peers: Rabbit Battery also grants haste; Sonic the Hedgehog naturally has haste and boosts haste creatures.
- Failure modes: Do not label this as a combo piece; it is a tempo and haste-enabling card unless a specific lethal attack is visible.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Better against tapped-out opponents and removal-light boards; face-down mode is slow against fast aggro.
#### Brainstorm
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant-speed selection core piece.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Digs three cards deep, hides important cards from discard, and pairs with fetchlands to clear excess lands or dead hate.
- Timing: Best with Flooded Strand, Scalding Tarn, or Arid Mesa available; cast in response to discard or when you urgently need protection, land, or lethal burn.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; draws three cards, then puts two cards from your hand on top of your library in any order.
- Partners / packages: Shuffle partners are Flooded Strand, Scalding Tarn, and Arid Mesa; top-card planning matters for Delver of Secrets and Ponder-style sequencing.
- Role peers: Ponder sees three and can shuffle before drawing; Izzet Charm draws two then discards two; Magma Jet scries after dealing damage.
- Failure modes: Do not cast Brainstorm without a shuffle or urgent need if it strands weak cards on top and costs the turn's Spell Pierce or Swan Song window.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against discard and control; against aggro, prioritize finding Path to Exile, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Arc Trail, or untapped mana.
#### Delver of Secrets
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana blue pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; multi-aspect card.
- Deck-specific job: Starts as a one-mana Wizard that can transform into a 3/2 flying clock when your upkeep reveal shows an instant or sorcery.
- Timing: Cast early when blue mana is available and the hand has enough instants or sorceries to threaten transformation; use Ponder or Brainstorm to set up a reveal when the tempo gain matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; outputs a 1/1 Human Wizard, then may transform after you look at the top card and may reveal it if it is an instant or sorcery.
- Mode map: Delver of Secrets: 1/1 Wizard that helps Kaza, Roil Chaser's Wizard count. Insectile Aberration: 3/2 flying Human Insect with no mana cost listed; transform only through the upkeep trigger in the reference.
- Partners / packages: Reveal hits include Swan Song, Ponder, Gods Willing, Brainstorm, Brave the Elements, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Magma Jet, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Arc Trail, Lightning Bolt, Faith's Shield, Path to Exile, and sideboard Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Swords to Plowshares, Abrade.
- Role peers: Dragon's Rage Channeler is another one-mana blue-red spell-density threat; Phoenix Chick is a guaranteed flying haste one-drop.
- Failure modes: Reference metadata includes face text but missing combined Oracle; rely on face text for transformation and flying, not unstated wording.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against slow decks without early blockers; weaker when you cannot control the top card or need a blocker immediately.
#### Null Rod
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, hate permanent role player.
- Role type: hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Shuts off activated abilities of artifacts to slow artifact mana, equipment, combo artifacts, and opposing utility artifacts while your creatures attack.
- Timing: Cast when visible opposing artifacts matter more than your own artifact activations; avoid blind turn-two deployment if your pressure depends on Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, Reckless Lackey, or later Clue tokens from Malcolm, the Eyes.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}; outputs a static restriction that activated abilities of artifacts cannot be activated.
- Partners / packages: Pairs with Cursed Totem against activated-engine decks and Aven Mindcensor against search-heavy decks; conflicts with Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, Reckless Lackey, Pithing Needle, and Stony Silence-like lines.
- Role peers: Stony Silence is the sideboard enchantment version; Pithing Needle names one card instead of shutting off artifact activated abilities broadly.
- Failure modes: Does not stop triggered abilities, static abilities, mana abilities of nonartifact lands, or creature abilities unless those sources are artifacts.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Bring or keep against artifact decks; cut or delay against creature decks where it does not change combat.
#### Cursed Totem
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, hate permanent role player.
- Role type: hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Turns off activated abilities of creatures, buying attack steps against creature-combo commanders and utility creatures.
- Timing: Deploy only when opposing creature activated abilities are central or when your own Mother of Runes, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Fanatical Firebrand, Spectral Sailor, Gingerbrute, Sawblade Scamp, Reckless Lackey, Masked Meower, and Rabbit Battery abilities are less important.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}; outputs a static restriction that activated abilities of creatures cannot be activated.
- Partners / packages: Works with Null Rod against activated engines; Aven Mindcensor and Pithing Needle cover search or named abilities Cursed Totem does not address.
- Role peers: Pithing Needle can name a single activated source; Containment Priest sideboards against creatures entering without being cast.
- Failure modes: Does not stop triggered abilities like Sonic the Hedgehog attacking, Laelia attacking, Goblin Guide attacking, or Malcolm investigating.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against creature-combo and commander decks with activated abilities; weak when it disables your protection from Mother of Runes without hurting the opponent.
#### Brave the Elements
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, team protection role player.
- Role type: protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Protects white creatures from a chosen color or lets them attack through blockers of that color.
- Timing: Save for lethal alpha strikes, a sweeper or damage effect of a chosen color, or a removal/combat window involving white creatures.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; choose a color; white creatures you control gain protection from the chosen color until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Affects white creatures in this deck: Sonic the Hedgehog, Whitemane Lion, Esper Sentinel, Zephyr Sentinel? Zephyr Sentinel is blue, not white; Gods Willing does not matter as a creature. Exact affected creatures are Sonic the Hedgehog, Whitemane Lion, Esper Sentinel, Cathar Commando, Plumecreed Escort? Plumecreed Escort is blue, so not affected; Merry, Esquire of Rohan, Mother of Runes, Aven Mindcensor, Containment Priest, and sideboard Swords is not a creature.
- Role peers: Gods Willing targets one creature you control; Faith's Shield targets one permanent and can scale at 5 or less life.
- Failure modes: It does nothing for nonwhite attackers such as Monastery Swiftspear, Sprite Dragon, Lightning Stormkin, Goblin Guide, or Laelia, the Blade Reforged.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High value against mono-colored removal or blocker boards; lower value when your battlefield is mostly red and blue creatures.
#### Spell Pierce
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana stack interaction role player.
- Role type: interaction-stack.
- Deck-specific job: Stops noncreature spells on the stack that answer your clock, establish an engine, or enable a combo before the opponent has spare mana.
- Timing: Strongest in the first turns and in tapped-out fights; check whether the controller can pay {2} before relying on it.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; counters target noncreature spell unless its controller pays {2}.
- Partners / packages: Protects Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and lethal Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, or Shard Volley.
- Role peers: Swan Song hits enchantment, instant, or sorcery spells and gives a Bird; Izzet Charm has the same noncreature tax mode at {U}{R}.
- Failure modes: Cannot target creature spells and loses value once the opponent can pay {2}; never hold it for a resolved permanent.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against control, combo, sweepers, and planeswalkers on the stack; side out more often against low-curve creature decks.
#### Izzet Charm
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flexible interaction and filtering role player.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Gives the deck a single card that can protect a threat, kill a small creature, or dig for pressure and reach.
- Timing: Hold up {U}{R} when all three options are live; use proactively only if killing a blocker or drawing/discarding two improves the current turn's damage or mana.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{R}; outputs one chosen mode.
- Mode map: Counter mode counters target noncreature spell unless its controller pays {2}. Damage mode deals 2 damage to target creature only, not any target. Loot mode draws two cards, then discards two cards.
- Partners / packages: Damage mode clears blockers for Monastery Swiftspear, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Tin Street Dodger, and Sonic the Hedgehog; loot mode discards excess lands, dead Null Rod, dead Cursed Totem, or uncastable expensive cards.
- Role peers: Spell Pierce shares the noncreature tax role; Magma Jet and Burst Lightning are cheaper damage spells with different target classes.
- Failure modes: Do not aim damage at a player or planeswalker; the Card Reference damage mode targets only a creature.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in unknown games; choose mode from visible stack, creature size, and hand texture.
#### Storm Entity
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, spell-chain payoff role player.
- Role type: mechanic payoff; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Converts a multi-spell turn into a hasty creature that enters with a +1/+1 counter for each other spell cast that turn.
- Timing: Cast after the important cheap spells, not before; prioritize it when you can cast at least two other spells or when haste damage is immediately relevant.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs a haste creature with counters based on other spells cast this turn.
- Partners / packages: Best with Ponder, Brainstorm, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Gods Willing, Spell Pierce, Magma Jet, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, Tin Street Dodger, Phoenix Chick, Fanatical Firebrand, Reckless Lackey, or Dragon's Rage Channeler cast before it.
- Role peers: Sprite Dragon grows across turns from noncreature spells; Slickshot Show-Off gives temporary burst from noncreature spells.
- Failure modes: Do not cast it as a 1/1 or 2/2 if waiting one turn creates a lethal or resilient body and you are not under pressure.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in tempo mirrors after trading cheap spells; weak into open instant removal if it is your only payoff.
#### Akoum Battlesinger
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, haste creature and minor Ally payoff role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks immediately and can pump Ally creatures when it or another Ally enters, but this list has limited Ally density.
- Timing: Cast when a hasty body matters or when the pump changes combat; do not hold it for a nonexistent broad tribal package.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs a 1/1 haste creature and a may trigger giving Ally creatures you control +1/+0 until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Registered Ally creatures are Akoum Battlesinger only from the provided types, so the trigger usually pumps itself only.
- Role peers: Kolaghan Stormsinger and Rabbit Battery also help haste lines; Storm Entity is a stronger spell-chain burst threat.
- Failure modes: Do not evaluate it as a true combo or tribal engine in this exact deck because no other current-list Ally is named in the Card Reference.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Fine as pressure against slow decks; low impact against creature boards where a 1/1 cannot attack profitably.
#### Magma Jet
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, burn-selection role player.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Deals 2 damage to any target while using scry 2 to find the next land, protection, threat, or lethal burn.
- Timing: Use before combat when 2 damage clears a blocker or planeswalker; otherwise end-step it when scry information is worth more than prowess timing.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; deals 2 damage to any target and scries 2.
- Partners / packages: Triggers Monastery Swiftspear, Stormchaser Mage, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dragon's Rage Channeler, and can set up Delver of Secrets by managing top cards.
- Role peers: Lightning Bolt is more efficient damage; Burst Lightning has kicker reach; Arc Trail splits damage as a sorcery.
- Failure modes: Do not spend it on a low-value target if the scry is not urgent and Lightning Bolt or Burst Lightning must remain for a bigger creature or lethal.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against two-toughness creatures, planeswalkers at 2 loyalty, and stalled draws; less efficient against large creatures.
#### Slith Firewalker
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, double-red scaling pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Snowballs from early combat damage to the opponent, becoming a larger Sonic counter recipient over time.
- Timing: Cast early when {R}{R} is available and the opponent lacks profitable blockers; later, cast only if haste plus protection can force the first hit.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}{R}; outputs haste damage and a +1/+1 counter whenever it deals combat damage to a player.
- Partners / packages: Protection from Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Mother of Runes, or Brave the Elements can force the first connection; Sonic the Hedgehog adds more counters if it attacks while Slith has haste.
- Role peers: Sprite Dragon and Laelia, the Blade Reforged also accumulate counters; Monastery Swiftspear supplies cheaper immediate pressure.
- Failure modes: Do not keep hands that cannot cast {R}{R} early just because Slith is present; it is poor when blocked before the first counter.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control without early blockers; weak against creature-dense decks and red mirrors with cheap removal.
#### Burst Lightning
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flexible one-mana burn role player.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Removes small blockers early or becomes four damage to any target in longer games through kicker.
- Timing: Use unkicked when the mana efficiency matters; kick only when five mana does not cost a second spell or when 4 damage is lethal or kills a key creature.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}, or {R} plus kicker {4}; deals 2 damage to any target, or 4 if kicked.
- Mode map: Unkicked: cheap removal, reach, and prowess trigger. Kicked: late-game reach or bigger removal for five total mana.
- Partners / packages: Triggers Monastery Swiftspear, Stormchaser Mage, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, and Dragon's Rage Channeler; can be recast by Dreadhorde Arcanist when its power is at least 1 because Burst Lightning's mana value is 1.
- Role peers: Lightning Bolt is fixed 3 damage for {R}; Shard Volley is 3 damage with a land sacrifice.
- Failure modes: Do not kick it if that prevents holding protection or counterspell mana and 2 damage already does the job.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against low-toughness pressure and as a topdeck finisher; count planeswalker and opponent life totals exactly.
#### Sprite Dragon
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, core spell-payoff threat.
- Role type: mechanic payoff; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Turns Ponder, Brainstorm, Swan Song, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Magma Jet, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Arc Trail, Lightning Bolt, Faith's Shield, and Path to Exile into permanent +1/+1 counters on an evasive haste creature.
- Timing: Commit before a cheap-spell sequence when protection is available or opponent shields are down; do not run it into open removal if you can bait with a lower-value threat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{R}; outputs flying haste pressure and +1/+1 counters whenever you cast a noncreature spell.
- Partners / packages: Grows from Ponder, Brainstorm, Swan Song, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Magma Jet, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Arc Trail, Lightning Bolt, Faith's Shield, Path to Exile, and sideboard noncreature spells.
- Role peers: Stormchaser Mage and Monastery Swiftspear use temporary pump; Slickshot Show-Off gives larger temporary power; Laelia grows from exile events.
- Failure modes: Do not cast noncreature spells into irrelevant windows just to add counters if those spells are needed for removal, protection, or lethal reach.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: One of the best threats against control and midrange; protect it from exile and bounce when it is already large.
#### Shard Volley
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, high-risk reach and removal role player.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Converts an expendable land into 3 damage to any target, usually to finish the opponent or answer a must-kill creature.
- Timing: Save for lethal, emergency survival, or a blocker that changes the race; avoid early use when sacrificing a land strands Sonic the Hedgehog, Zealous Conscripts, protection plus burn, or commander-tax turns.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R} plus sacrificing a land as an additional cost; deals 3 damage to any target.
- Partners / packages: Best with extra lands after Fiery Islet or Sunbaked Canyon are no longer needed, and with Monastery Swiftspear, Stormchaser Mage, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, or Dragon's Rage Channeler triggers.
- Role peers: Lightning Bolt deals 3 without sacrificing a land; Burst Lightning is lower early damage but safer.
- Failure modes: Do not cast into counterspell mana unless lethal pressure demands it; if countered, the sacrificed land is still paid as a cost.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong as reach against control or combo; risky against aggro and mana-denial pressure.
#### Arc Trail
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, sorcery-speed split removal role player.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Creates tempo by dealing 2 damage to one target and 1 damage to another target, often clearing two low-toughness creatures or combining creature damage with opponent reach.
- Timing: Use precombat when it opens attacks or kills two relevant bodies; do not hold it as instant interaction because it is a sorcery.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; deals 2 damage to any target and 1 damage to any other target.
- Partners / packages: Supports attacks from Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Tin Street Dodger, and Lightning Stormkin by clearing small blockers.
- Role peers: Magma Jet is instant and scries but hits one target; Izzet Charm hits only target creature for 2; Abrade sideboard hits one creature for 3 or one artifact.
- Failure modes: Requires two different targets; do not cast if the forced second target helps the opponent or damages your own important permanent unnecessarily.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against creature swarms and mana creatures; cut against control or combo with few targets.
#### Dreadhorde Arcanist
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, graveyard spell-reuse engine role player.
- Role type: engine piece; recursion; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Recasts cheap instants and sorceries from your graveyard when it attacks, turning combat into extra removal, selection, protection, or reach.
- Timing: Cast when it can attack safely or be protected; do not attack into a bad trade unless the graveyard spell changes the race immediately.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs trample attacks and may cast target instant or sorcery card with mana value less than or equal to its power from your graveyard without paying its mana cost; that spell is exiled if it would go back to graveyard.
- Partners / packages: Recast targets at base power 1 include Ponder, Brainstorm, Swan Song, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Spell Pierce, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Lightning Bolt, Faith's Shield, Path to Exile, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, and Swords to Plowshares.
- Role peers: Laelia, the Blade Reforged and Robber of the Rich generate attack-based card access; Phoenix Chick and Hell's Thunder are graveyard pressure.
- Failure modes: Rest in Peace shuts off the graveyard target plan; do not assume kicker, overload, or alternate costs when casting for free unless the rules engine offers them.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against removal-light midrange and control; protect it against graveyard hate and exile removal.
#### Reckless Lackey
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana haste pressure and material role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine fuel/material; mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks early with first strike and can later cash itself in for a card plus a Treasure token.
- Timing: Lead with it when first strike matters in combat; activate the sacrifice ability only when the card plus Treasure outweigh losing a body and you can pay {2}{R}.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; activated ability consumes {2}{R} and sacrificing Reckless Lackey; outputs drawing a card and a Treasure token.
- Partners / packages: Treasure supports Sonic the Hedgehog, Zealous Conscripts, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and sideboard double-spell turns; conflicts with Null Rod and Stony Silence because it is an artifact? Reckless Lackey is a creature, not artifact, so Null Rod/Stony Silence do not stop its creature ability; Cursed Totem does stop it.
- Role peers: Bomat Courier also cashes in by sacrificing itself; Masked Meower discards and sacrifices to draw.
- Failure modes: Do not sacrifice it while it is a needed attacker, blocker, or Sonic counter recipient unless the draw or Treasure changes the turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good in races against low-toughness creatures because first strike preserves pressure; weaker under Cursed Totem.
#### Skitter of Lizards
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, scalable haste threat singleton.
- Role type: threat/clock; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Provides a one-mana haste body early or a larger hasty threat later through multikicker.
- Timing: Cast for {R} when early pressure is needed; multikick when extra mana would otherwise go unused and the larger body changes combat or lethal.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R} plus optional {1}{R} any number of times; enters with a +1/+1 counter for each time it was kicked.
- Mode map: No kicker: 1/1 haste for tempo. One or more multikickers: larger haste body for mana-heavy turns; each kick consumes {1}{R} and adds one +1/+1 counter.
- Partners / packages: Sonic the Hedgehog adds more counters because Skitter has haste; Kilo, Apogee Mind can proliferate existing counters after becoming tapped.
- Role peers: Storm Entity scales from spell count; Slith Firewalker scales from combat damage; Sprite Dragon scales from noncreature spells.
- Failure modes: Do not spend all mana on kicks if holding Lightning Bolt, Spell Pierce, Gods Willing, or Faith's Shield changes the opponent's next turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Flexible against control and midrange; inefficient against fast decks if kicked too late.
#### Deceiver Exarch
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash tempo and defensive role player.
- Role type: modal utility; protection/evasion; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Uses flash to surprise block, tap an opposing permanent, or untap one of your permanents for mana, blocking, or a second use.
- Timing: Hold up as instant-speed interaction when the opponent's attack or key permanent timing matters; cast end step if tapping/untapping is not needed.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{U}; outputs a 1/4 flash body and one enter choice.
- Mode map: Untap target permanent you control: reuse a land, Mother of Runes, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Sawblade Scamp, or a blocker. Tap target permanent an opponent controls: remove a blocker before your turn, tap an attacker, or disrupt a mana/permanent timing window.
- Partners / packages: Works with Mother of Runes, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Sawblade Scamp, and lands that produce needed colors; can buy time for Sonic the Hedgehog and evasive threats.
- Role peers: Threnody Singer changes combat stats at flash speed; Zephyr Sentinel and Whitemane Lion save your own creatures.
- Failure modes: No Splinter Twin-style combo is present in this registered list; do not hold it for a nonexistent deterministic kill.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against combat math and single big blockers; less useful against noncombat combo unless tapping a permanent stops the visible line.
#### Lightning Bolt
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premier burn core piece.
- Role type: interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Kills small to medium creatures, removes planeswalkers at 3 loyalty, or finishes the opponent after early attacks.
- Timing: Use before combat only when it opens profitable attacks or prevents lethal; otherwise preserve it for blocks, end step, or exact lethal.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; deals 3 damage to any target.
- Partners / packages: Triggers Monastery Swiftspear, Stormchaser Mage, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, and Dragon's Rage Channeler; Dreadhorde Arcanist can recast it at base power 1.
- Role peers: Shard Volley also deals 3 but sacrifices a land; Burst Lightning is 2 or kicked 4; Magma Jet is 2 plus scry 2.
- Failure modes: Do not spend it on face damage if a blocker or attacker will swing the race harder than 3 reach.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against aggro, planeswalkers, and as reach against control; count prevention and protection effects before targeting.
#### Phoenix Chick
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana evasive recursive pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; recursion; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Chips in with flying haste and can return from the graveyard tapped and attacking when you attack with three or more creatures and pay {R}{R}.
- Timing: Cast early for pressure; preserve red mana for recursion only when three attackers are realistic and the extra tapped attacker matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; cannot block; graveyard trigger consumes {R}{R} on attacks with three or more creatures and returns Phoenix Chick tapped and attacking with a +1/+1 counter.
- Partners / packages: Works with cheap attackers Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Tin Street Dodger, Gingerbrute, Fanatical Firebrand, Rabbit Battery, and Bomat Courier to reach three attackers.
- Role peers: Hell's Thunder also returns from graveyard for one more attack; Spectral Sailor is a flying one-drop that can block and draw.
- Failure modes: Do not rely on it defensively because it can't block; Rest in Peace stops the graveyard return.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against control and planeswalkers; weaker against fast flyers or when you must block.
#### Rabbit Battery
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana artifact creature and haste-granting role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; protection/evasion; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Starts as a hasty attacker or reconfigures onto a larger creature to give +1/+1 and haste.
- Timing: Cast early as pressure when curve matters; reconfigure only as a sorcery when the equipped creature's extra power or haste changes combat.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; reconfigure consumes {R}; outputs a 1/1 haste artifact creature or an attached Equipment giving equipped creature +1/+1 and haste.
- Mode map: Creature mode: attacks and receives Sonic counters because it has haste. Attached mode: not a creature while attached, gives target creature you control +1/+1 and haste, and helps Merry, Esquire of Rohan have first strike while equipped.
- Partners / packages: Equip targets include Sonic the Hedgehog, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, and Merry, Esquire of Rohan.
- Role peers: Kolaghan Stormsinger can grant haste once; Gingerbrute is another one-mana artifact haste threat.
- Failure modes: Null Rod and Stony Silence stop Rabbit Battery's artifact activated reconfigure ability; do not attach it if losing a creature body reduces lethal.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good for surprise pressure after removal; weaker against artifact hate and sorcery-speed reconfigure constraints.
#### Sawblade Scamp
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana noncreature-spell payoff role player.
- Role type: mechanic payoff; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Turns noncreature spells into oil counters, then converts oil into damage to each opponent.
- Timing: Play early before chaining noncreature spells; activate only when tapping it does not cost better combat damage or when the 1 damage matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; each noncreature spell you cast puts an oil counter on it; activated ability taps and removes an oil counter to deal 1 damage to each opponent.
- Partners / packages: Oil producers are Ponder, Brainstorm, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Izzet Charm, Magma Jet, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, and sideboard noncreature spells.
- Role peers: Monastery Swiftspear and Stormchaser Mage use temporary noncreature triggers; Sprite Dragon keeps counters; Slickshot Show-Off gets temporary +2/+0.
- Failure modes: Cursed Totem stops the activated damage ability; do not tap Sawblade Scamp before combat if attacking for more or receiving Sonic counters matters.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against control and stalled boards where incremental reach matters; weak if removed before oil converts.
#### Loyal Apprentice
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, commander-dependent pressure role player.
- Role type: engine piece; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Produces a hasty flying Thopter each combat when you control Sonic the Hedgehog.
- Timing: Cast when Sonic is likely to be on board for the next combat or when a 2/1 haste attacker is acceptable without lieutenant.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; outputs a 2/1 haste body and, at beginning of combat on your turn if you control your commander, a 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature token with flying and haste until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Sonic the Hedgehog enables lieutenant and can counter Loyal Apprentice because it has haste; Thopter tokens with haste also receive Sonic counters on future Sonic attacks if they remain creatures with haste.
- Role peers: Captain Lannery Storm creates Treasure on attack; Malcolm, the Eyes creates Clues on second spell.
- Failure modes: Do not assume tokens appear without controlling your commander at beginning of combat.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against removal-light midrange and control when Sonic survives; lower value when commander tax prevents Sonic from staying in play.
#### Fanatical Firebrand
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana pressure and ping role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks immediately, threatens to pick off one-toughness creatures, or converts into the final damage point.
- Timing: Lead early when pressure matters; hold the sacrifice ability for a target that changes combat, prevents lethal, or finishes a player or planeswalker.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; activated ability taps and sacrifices Fanatical Firebrand to deal 1 damage to any target.
- Partners / packages: Combines with Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Magma Jet, Arc Trail, Izzet Charm, and combat damage to finish larger creatures.
- Role peers: Sawblade Scamp provides repeated one-damage reach with oil; Masked Meower and Reckless Lackey are other sacrifice-for-resource attackers.
- Failure modes: Cursed Totem stops the activated ability; do not sacrifice it for a meaningless point if it is needed for Phoenix Chick's three-attacker recursion.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against mana creatures and small utility creatures; preserve it against decks with one-toughness combo pieces.
#### Threnody Singer
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash flyer defensive role player.
- Role type: protection/evasion; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Flashes in to shrink an opposing creature's power for a combat step while adding a flying Sonic counter recipient.
- Timing: Hold for combat when reducing power changes survival, blocks, or the race; cast end step only if pressure matters more than the -X/-0 trigger.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; target creature an opponent controls gets -X/-0 until end of turn, where X is your devotion to blue.
- Partners / packages: Blue mana symbols on permanents can include Sonic the Hedgehog, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Stormchaser Mage, Sprite Dragon, Lightning Stormkin, Deceiver Exarch, Spectral Sailor, Malcolm, the Eyes, and Kilo, Apogee Mind.
- Role peers: Deceiver Exarch can tap an opposing permanent; Plumecreed Escort protects your own creature instead of reducing opposing power.
- Failure modes: Do not use it as removal; -X/-0 does not deal damage or reduce toughness.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against single large attackers and races; weaker against wide boards and noncombat combo.
#### Faith's Shield
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana permanent protection role player.
- Role type: protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Protects any target permanent you control, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Null Rod, Rest in Peace, Mana Confluence, or another battlefield resource, and can protect you plus each permanent you control at 5 or less life.
- Timing: Hold for removal, combat, or lethal prevention; fateful hour makes it a blowout when you are at 5 or less life.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; target permanent you control gains protection from the color of your choice until end of turn, or if you have 5 or less life, you and each permanent you control gain that protection instead.
- Partners / packages: Protects Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, and lands from colored targeted effects.
- Role peers: Gods Willing targets only a creature and scries; Brave the Elements affects white creatures only; Mother of Runes repeats but targets creatures.
- Failure modes: Does not stop colorless effects, sacrifice effects, or non-targeted sweepers unless protection from the chosen color prevents damage or other relevant qualities.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High value against colored removal and burn; fateful hour can turn a losing combat or lethal red spell into a winning turn.
#### Hell's Thunder
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, burst evasive closer role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; recursion; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Delivers 4 flying haste damage for one turn, then can unearth for another one-turn attack from the graveyard.
- Timing: Cast when 4 flying damage pressures life total or planeswalkers; unearth only as a sorcery when the attack matters now.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}{R}; sacrifices itself at the beginning of the end step. Unearth consumes {4}{R}, returns it from graveyard to battlefield with haste, then exiles it at next end step or if it would leave battlefield.
- Mode map: Normal cast: 4/4 flying haste that sacrifices at end step. Unearth: graveyard access for one attack, then exile; wrong when Rest in Peace is active or when five mana is needed for interaction.
- Partners / packages: Protection from Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Mother of Runes, or Brave the Elements can force a lethal flying swing if color-relevant.
- Role peers: Phoenix Chick provides smaller recursive flying pressure; Zealous Conscripts is a five-mana swing closer.
- Failure modes: Do not cast into a flying blocker if burn or protection cannot clear the path; Rest in Peace prevents graveyard access.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control and planeswalkers; weaker against exile removal and lifegain.
#### Ash Zealot
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, double-red pressure and graveyard-punisher role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks and blocks efficiently with first strike and punishes any player who casts a spell from a graveyard.
- Timing: Cast early when {R}{R} is available; prioritize it against flashback, escape, unearth, or graveyard spell decks.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}{R}; outputs a 2/2 first strike haste body and a triggered 3 damage to any player who casts a spell from a graveyard.
- Partners / packages: Your own Dreadhorde Arcanist can trigger Ash Zealot against you when you cast a spell from your graveyard; Hell's Thunder unearth is an activated ability, not casting a spell.
- Role peers: Rest in Peace is a stronger sideboard graveyard shutdown; Dragon's Rage Channeler is another red one-drop-ish pressure card but not graveyard hate.
- Failure modes: Do not forget the trigger is symmetrical for players casting from graveyards; sequence Dreadhorde Arcanist lines accordingly.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against flashback and escape strategies; still a solid attacker against control if mana supports {R}{R}.
#### Slickshot Show-Off
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, evasive burst threat role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; mechanic payoff; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Turns noncreature spells into large temporary flying damage and can be plotted to set up a later no-mana burst turn.
- Timing: Cast when it can attack and you can chain noncreature spells; plot when spending {1}{R} now lets a later turn cast it for free with protection or burn.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; each noncreature spell gives +2/+0 until end of turn. Plot consumes {1}{R} and exiles it from hand; you may cast it as a sorcery on a later turn without paying mana.
- Mode map: Normal cast: immediate flying haste threat. Plot: delayed cast permission for a later sorcery-speed turn; wrong when immediate defense or pressure is required.
- Partners / packages: High-impact triggers include Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Magma Jet, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Ponder, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, and Swan Song.
- Role peers: Stormchaser Mage and Monastery Swiftspear gain toughness with prowess; Sprite Dragon grows permanently.
- Failure modes: Pump is power-only, so it still dies to small damage or blockers if unprotected.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong for surprise lethal against control or tapped-out opponents; weaker against instant removal if you plot without protection.
#### Zealous Conscripts
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, five-mana swing-turn closer singleton.
- Role type: threat/clock; interaction-removal; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Steals any target permanent for the turn, untaps it, gives it haste, and attacks or uses it to create a decisive swing.
- Timing: Save for lethal, stealing a blocker, commander, planeswalker, or engine permanent; avoid casting as only a 3/3 haste creature.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {4}{R}; outputs a 3/3 haste body and temporary control of target permanent until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Stealing a blocker opens attacks from Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Hell's Thunder, Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, and Lightning Stormkin.
- Role peers: Deceiver Exarch is cheaper tempo tapping; Path to Exile permanently answers a creature.
- Failure modes: Do not steal a permanent if you cannot use the attack, activation, or blocker removal profitably before end of turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against single large blockers, planeswalkers, and commander-centric boards; weaker against go-wide boards and removal before combat.
#### Goblin Guide
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premier one-mana pressure core piece.
- Role type: threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Opens the fastest damage clock and pressures life totals so burn and evasive threats become lethal quickly.
- Timing: Lead on turn one whenever red mana is available unless Esper Sentinel or Mother of Runes is much better for the matchup.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; outputs 2 haste damage and an attack trigger where defending player reveals the top card and puts it into hand if it is a land.
- Partners / packages: Follow with Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Tin Street Dodger, Monastery Swiftspear, Phoenix Chick, or Spell Pierce to keep the opponent from stabilizing.
- Role peers: Monastery Swiftspear is smaller initially but scales with noncreature spells; Dragon's Rage Channeler filters but lacks haste.
- Failure modes: Do not attack blindly if giving a land plus losing Guide to a blocker costs the race; the trigger can improve the opponent's hand.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best on the play against control and combo; against aggro, check whether revealing lands helps them curve out faster.
#### Command Tower
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premium mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Provides one mana of any color in Sonic the Hedgehog's Jeskai color identity, supporting red one-drops, blue selection, white protection, and the commander.
- Timing: Sequence early when it unlocks multiple colors; preserve other lands for fetch/shock or check-land needs.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for one mana of any color in your commander's color identity: {U}, {R}, or {W}.
- Partners / packages: Casts Sonic the Hedgehog, Ponder, Lightning Bolt, Gods Willing, Spell Pierce, Path to Exile, and sideboard Pyroblast, Hydroblast, Rest in Peace, and Abrade.
- Role peers: Mana Confluence also makes any color but costs life; Mystic Monastery makes all three colors but enters tapped.
- Failure modes: Does not make colors outside the commander identity; do not count it as colorless-specific mana because it produces colored mana here.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Valuable in every matchup; against burn, it is painless fixing compared with Mana Confluence, Adarkar Wastes, Battlefield Forge, Shivan Reef, Fiery Islet, and Sunbaked Canyon.
#### Glacial Fortress
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, blue-white mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Supplies {W} or {U} for protection, removal, cantrips, and stack interaction while supporting Sonic's color requirements.
- Timing: Best after controlling Plains, Island, Hallowed Fountain, Prairie Stream, Sacred Foundry, or Steam Vents with the right basic type; avoid as the only turn-one land if it enters tapped and you need Ponder, Delver of Secrets, Esper Sentinel, or Mother of Runes.
- Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped unless you control a Plains or Island; taps for {W} or {U}.
- Partners / packages: Supports Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Path to Exile, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Ponder, Brainstorm, and Sonic the Hedgehog.
- Role peers: Seachrome Coast is faster early; Hallowed Fountain has Plains Island types but may cost 2 life.
- Failure modes: Does not produce red, so hands relying on Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Lightning Bolt, or Phoenix Chick need another source.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong painless fixing after setup; sequence carefully against tempo and burn.
#### Clifftop Retreat
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, red-white mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Supplies {R} or {W} for early pressure plus white protection/removal.
- Timing: Play untapped after Mountain or Plains typed lands; avoid as the only turn-one land when you need immediate red or white.
- Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped unless you control a Mountain or Plains; taps for {R} or {W}.
- Partners / packages: Supports Goblin Guide, Lightning Bolt, Monastery Swiftspear, Gods Willing, Path to Exile, Brave the Elements, and Sonic the Hedgehog.
- Role peers: Inspiring Vantage is better early; Sacred Foundry has Mountain Plains types and can enter untapped for 2 life.
- Failure modes: Does not make blue for Ponder, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, or Izzet Charm.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good painless midgame fixing; tapped opening sequences are risky against fast decks.
#### Fiery Islet
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, blue-red pain draw land mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Provides early {U} or {R} for selection and burn, then turns into a card when mana is no longer the bottleneck.
- Timing: Use as mana while double-spelling or casting Sonic is still important; sacrifice to draw only when flooding, digging for lethal, or responding to land removal.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps and pays 1 life for {U} or {R}; {1}, tap, sacrifice draws a card.
- Partners / packages: Casts Ponder, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, and Izzet Charm.
- Role peers: Sunbaked Canyon is the red-white version; Mana Confluence makes all colors but has no draw sacrifice.
- Failure modes: Life loss matters against red aggro and burn; sacrificing it can strand white protection or commander tax if it was needed as mana.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against control and midrange flooding; be conservative versus burn.
#### Adarkar Wastes
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, blue-white pain land mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Provides painless {C} or painful {W}/{U} for white protection and blue interaction without entering tapped.
- Timing: Use colored pain early when it enables Ponder, Spell Pierce, Gods Willing, Path to Exile, or Sonic; use {C} only when generic costs allow it.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for {C}, or taps for {W} or {U} and deals 1 damage to you.
- Partners / packages: Casts Esper Sentinel, Mother of Runes, Path to Exile, Gods Willing, Ponder, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, and Zephyr Sentinel.
- Role peers: Hallowed Fountain offers typed fixing with optional 2 life; Mana Confluence fixes all colors for 1 life.
- Failure modes: Does not produce red, so it cannot cast Goblin Guide, Lightning Bolt, or Monastery Swiftspear without another red source.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Untapped interaction land is strong against combo and control; pain is costly against burn.
#### Battlefield Forge
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, red-white pain land mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Supplies untapped red or white for early pressure, burn, protection, and Path to Exile.
- Timing: Use colored mana when it preserves tempo; switch to {C} for generic costs when life total is under pressure.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for {C}, or taps for {R} or {W} and deals 1 damage to you.
- Partners / packages: Casts Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Path to Exile, and Brave the Elements.
- Role peers: Sacred Foundry has Mountain Plains types and optional 2 life; Inspiring Vantage is painless early.
- Failure modes: Does not make blue for Ponder, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, or Izzet Charm.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong for aggressive starts; pain must be managed against red mirrors and creature races.
#### Shivan Reef
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, blue-red pain land mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Gives untapped access to the deck's core red-blue tempo colors.
- Timing: Use colored pain for early one-drops, Ponder, Spell Pierce, Lightning Bolt, Sprite Dragon, or Izzet Charm; use {C} when casting generic parts of costs.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for {C}, or taps for {U} or {R} and deals 1 damage to you.
- Partners / packages: Supports Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Monastery Swiftspear, Ponder, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Sprite Dragon, and Stormchaser Mage.
- Role peers: Steam Vents supplies Island Mountain types but may enter tapped or cost 2 life; Spirebluff Canal is painless early.
- Failure modes: Does not make white for Gods Willing, Path to Exile, Brave the Elements, or Sonic's white requirement.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High tempo value; life cost matters in burn and aggro.
#### Mystic Monastery
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tri-color tapped mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Fixes all three Sonic colors at the cost of entering tapped.
- Timing: Play when you have no turn-one action or when the next turns require all three colors; avoid leading with it if you can cast a red one-drop or Ponder from an untapped land.
- Inputs / outputs: Enters tapped; taps for {U}, {R}, or {W}.
- Partners / packages: Supports Sonic the Hedgehog, Izzet Charm, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Stormchaser Mage, Gods Willing, Path to Exile, and Lightning Bolt.
- Role peers: Command Tower makes the same colors untapped; Mana Confluence makes any color for life.
- Failure modes: The tapped entry can cost the deck's pressure identity; do not keep slow hands relying on it as the only early mana without Ponder or a strong plan.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in midrange/control games; risky against fast aggro and combo.
#### Captain Lannery Storm
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, three-mana Treasure pressure role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks immediately, creates Treasure, and turns sacrificed Treasure into extra combat power.
- Timing: Cast when it can attack safely or when Treasure accelerates Sonic, Zealous Conscripts, protection plus Lightning Bolt/Burst Lightning/Magma Jet, or boarded Pyroblast/Red Elemental Blast/Hydroblast/Wear // Tear/Rest in Peace/Stony Silence/Containment Priest/Swords to Plowshares/Abrade/Pithing Needle.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R}; attacking creates a Treasure token; sacrificing a Treasure gives Captain Lannery Storm +1/+0 until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Treasure helps cast Sonic the Hedgehog, Zealous Conscripts, Izzet Charm, Path to Exile, and double-spell turns; Sonic counters Captain because it has haste.
- Role peers: Reckless Lackey can draw and create Treasure; Sonic creates tapped Treasure when your flash or haste creatures are dealt damage.
- Failure modes: Null Rod and Stony Silence stop Treasure activated abilities because Treasure tokens are artifacts with activated mana abilities.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong when attacking is safe and mana acceleration matters; weak into larger blockers without protection or removal.
#### Cathar Commando
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash body and artifact/enchantment answer role player.
- Role type: interaction-removal; sideboard bullet; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Applies flash pressure while threatening to destroy a visible artifact or enchantment.
- Timing: Hold when the opponent has a meaningful artifact or enchantment; otherwise flash in at end step to add pressure.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; activated ability consumes {1} and sacrificing Cathar Commando to destroy target artifact or enchantment.
- Partners / packages: Answers targets that interfere with Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Dreadhorde Arcanist, or burn; works alongside Wear // Tear and Abrade from sideboard.
- Role peers: Wear // Tear answers artifacts/enchantments from the sideboard; Abrade answers artifacts or creatures; Null Rod/Stony Silence suppress activated artifact abilities instead of destroying.
- Failure modes: Cursed Totem stops Cathar Commando's creature activated ability; do not sacrifice it if the artifact/enchantment is low impact and the 3/1 body is racing.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against equipment, prison pieces, and enchantment engines; low value against creature-only decks.
#### Path to Exile
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premium white creature removal role player.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Exiles a creature that burn cannot handle, especially commanders, lifelinkers, combo creatures, or blockers that stop lethal.
- Timing: Use when the creature must be gone now; delay if giving a tapped basic land lets the opponent recover and the creature can be raced or burned.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; exiles target creature; its controller may search for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.
- Partners / packages: Clears attacks for Sonic the Hedgehog, Goblin Guide, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Hell's Thunder, and Tin Street Dodger.
- Role peers: Swords to Plowshares sideboard also exiles a creature but gives life equal to power; Lightning Bolt and Burst Lightning are cheaper but damage-based.
- Failure modes: Do not use on a minor creature if the land will enable a bigger opposing turn and burn can solve the issue.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against large commanders, combo creatures, and graveyard-recursive creatures; less efficient against small aggro bodies.
#### Hallowed Fountain
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, typed blue-white shock land mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Provides Plains Island types for fetchlands and checklands while casting blue selection/permission and white protection/removal.
- Timing: Pay 2 life when untapped {W} or {U} changes the turn; let it enter tapped when tempo is not at stake.
- Inputs / outputs: As it enters, you may pay 2 life; if not, it enters tapped. Taps for {W} or {U}.
- Partners / packages: Fetchable by Flooded Strand and Scalding Tarn? Scalding Tarn searches Island or Mountain, so it can find Hallowed Fountain because it is an Island; supports Glacial Fortress and Prairie Stream type checks.
- Role peers: Prairie Stream is typed but conditionally tapped; Adarkar Wastes is untapped but painful per colored use.
- Failure modes: Does not make red; avoid shock damage against burn unless blue/white interaction changes the race.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control/combo for holding {U} or {W}; life payment is costly versus red aggro.
#### Flooded Strand
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fetch land mana resource and shuffle tool.
- Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Finds Plains or Island cards to fix blue/white, indirectly access red through typed duals, and shuffle after Brainstorm or Ponder.
- Timing: Fetch before you need exact mana or after Brainstorm puts unwanted cards on top; delay when life total or information matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps, pays 1 life, sacrifices itself; searches for a Plains or Island card, puts it onto battlefield, then shuffles.
- Partners / packages: Registered targets are Hallowed Fountain, Prairie Stream, Sacred Foundry, Steam Vents, Island, and Plains.
- Role peers: Scalding Tarn finds Island or Mountain cards; Arid Mesa finds Mountain or Plains cards.
- Failure modes: Does not find Mystic Monastery, Command Tower, Glacial Fortress, or basic Mountain unless the card has Plains or Island type; do not claim it searches any land.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong with Brainstorm and Delver setup; manage life against burn.
#### Sacred Foundry
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, typed red-white shock land mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Provides Mountain Plains types for fetchlands/checklands and casts red pressure plus white protection.
- Timing: Pay 2 life when untapped red or white enables a one-drop, Path to Exile, Gods Willing, or Sonic sequencing; enter tapped when pressure is already established.
- Inputs / outputs: As it enters, you may pay 2 life; if not, it enters tapped. Taps for {R} or {W}.
- Partners / packages: Fetchable by Flooded Strand because it is a Plains and by Scalding Tarn or Arid Mesa because it is a Mountain or Plains; enables Clifftop Retreat.
- Role peers: Battlefield Forge gives untapped red-white with repeated pain; Inspiring Vantage is painless early.
- Failure modes: Does not make blue; shocking unnecessarily can lose races.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent for aggressive starts; be conservative against burn and red aggro.
#### Scalding Tarn
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fetch land mana resource and shuffle tool.
- Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Finds Island or Mountain cards to support red-blue starts, white via typed duals, and Brainstorm shuffle lines.
- Timing: Fetch to secure immediate colors or after Brainstorm; wait if the best target depends on the next draw or visible opponent pressure.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps, pays 1 life, sacrifices itself; searches for an Island or Mountain card, puts it onto battlefield, then shuffles.
- Partners / packages: Registered targets are Hallowed Fountain, Steam Vents, Sacred Foundry, Prairie Stream, Island, and Mountain.
- Role peers: Flooded Strand finds Plains or Island; Arid Mesa finds Mountain or Plains.
- Failure modes: Does not find Mystic Monastery, Command Tower, Spirebluff Canal, or non-typed duals.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best fetch for red-blue tempo; choose basics more often against burn or mana denial.
#### Bomat Courier
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana artifact pressure and reload role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine piece; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks early to store face-down cards, then can discard your hand and sacrifice itself to refill from its exiled pile.
- Timing: Attack when safe to build a stash; cash in when your hand is low, weak, or about to be answered and you can pay {R}.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}; attacks exile top card of your library face down; activated ability consumes {R}, discards your hand, and sacrifices Bomat Courier to put all cards exiled with it into owners' hands.
- Partners / packages: Works with Sonic counters because it has haste; artifact activation conflicts with Null Rod and Stony Silence.
- Role peers: Robber of the Rich and Laelia, the Blade Reforged provide attack-based card access; Reckless Lackey draws one and makes Treasure.
- Failure modes: You cannot look at the face-down cards before cashing in; do not discard important protection or lethal burn unless the exiled pile is worth it.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control and removal-heavy decks; poor against artifact hate and large early blockers.
#### Spectral Sailor
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash flying one-drop and mana-sink role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; card selection; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Pressures in the air, holds up interaction, and draws cards with unused late mana.
- Timing: Flash in at end step when you did not need Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Lightning Bolt, or protection; draw only when {3}{U} would otherwise go unused.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; activated ability consumes {3}{U} to draw a card.
- Partners / packages: Gets Sonic counters because it has flash; works with Malcolm, the Eyes as a Pirate for theme only, with no direct listed payoff besides types.
- Role peers: Phoenix Chick is faster flying haste but cannot block; Threnody Singer is a flash flyer with combat text.
- Failure modes: Cursed Totem stops the draw ability; do not tap out for a card when protection or counter mana is needed.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against control and end-step play patterns; valuable blocker against small flyers.
#### Plumecreed Escort
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash flyer protection role player.
- Role type: protection/evasion; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Protects a target creature you control with hexproof for the turn while adding flying flash pressure.
- Timing: Hold for targeted removal or a combat trick; cast end step only if protection is unlikely to be needed.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{U}; target creature you control gains hexproof until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Protects Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Slickshot Show-Off, and Stormchaser Mage.
- Role peers: Gods Willing and Faith's Shield give protection from a color; Zephyr Sentinel and Whitemane Lion dodge by bouncing.
- Failure modes: Hexproof does not stop sweepers, edicts, sacrifice effects, or spells already legally targeting if the rules engine has passed the target-change window incorrectly; use only when legal priority exists.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against targeted removal and tempo bounce; less useful against board wipes and creature combat without targets.
#### Masked Meower
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana haste pressure and discard outlet role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; discard outlet; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Provides early haste damage and can turn a weak card in hand into a fresh draw by discarding and sacrificing itself.
- Timing: Attack early unless the discard outlet is needed to fix a stalled hand; activate only when the discarded card is worse than a random draw and losing the body is acceptable.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; activated ability discards a card and sacrifices Masked Meower to draw a card.
- Partners / packages: Discarding triggers Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder; can discard excess lands, dead Null Rod, dead Cursed Totem, or uncastable high-cost cards.
- Role peers: Izzet Charm draws two then discards two; Bomat Courier discards hand to reload; Reckless Lackey sacrifices for draw plus Treasure.
- Failure modes: Cursed Totem stops the creature activated ability; do not discard needed protection, land drops, or lethal burn for blind selection.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good when hand quality matters more than one damage; poor when every card in hand is live.
#### Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, two-mana evasive discard-payoff role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; mechanic payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks with flying haste and becomes a burst threat whenever you discard a card.
- Timing: Cast before Izzet Charm, Masked Meower, or Bomat Courier discard turns if the +2/+0 matters; otherwise treat as evasive pressure.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; whenever you discard a card, Hobgoblin gets +2/+0 until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Discard sources are Izzet Charm, Masked Meower, and Bomat Courier's activation; cleanup discard can also trigger if it happens.
- Role peers: Slickshot Show-Off provides burst power from noncreature spells; Stormchaser Mage provides smaller evasive spell-pump.
- Failure modes: Do not discard good cards just to pump unless the attack is lethal or removes a key planeswalker.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control when discard outlets are live; weaker against instant removal before combat damage.
#### Laelia, the Blade Reforged
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, three-mana scaling value attacker core threat.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine piece; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks to exile and play the top card this turn while growing whenever cards are put into exile from your library or graveyard.
- Timing: Cast when it can attack safely or be protected; prioritize when your hand needs extra material and the opponent cannot easily block or remove it.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{R}; attack trigger exiles the top card of your library and lets you play it this turn; counter trigger adds +1/+1 when one or more cards are put into exile from your library and/or graveyard.
- Partners / packages: Grows from its own attack, Bomat Courier exiling from your library, Dreadhorde Arcanist exiling recast spells from graveyard, and Rest in Peace replacement effects if cards would go to exile from library/graveyard contexts.
- Role peers: Robber of the Rich accesses opponent cards; Sprite Dragon grows from noncreature spells.
- Failure modes: Do not exile a card you cannot play this turn unless the counter and attack pressure justify it.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against midrange and control; protect from exile removal and bounce when large.

- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Supplies Island Mountain types for fetchlands/checklands and casts the deck's red-blue tempo core.

- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.

- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.

- Partners / packages: Counter partners are Sonic the Hedgehog-created +1/+1 counters, Sprite Dragon counters, Slith Firewalker counters, Laelia counters, Skitter of Lizards kicked counters, Storm Entity counters, and Phoenix Chick recursion counters.
- Role peers: Sonic the Hedgehog distributes counters; Laelia and Sprite Dragon grow themselves.
- Failure modes: Proliferate does little without existing counters; do not expose Kilo as a three-color 3/3 when a protected threat or interaction is better.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in board stalls with counters; weaker against spot removal before it taps.
#### Gingerbrute
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana artifact haste threat and utility body.
- Role type: threat/clock; protection/evasion; lifegain/stabilization.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks early, can become difficult to block against non-haste boards, and can sacrifice for 3 life in races.
- Timing: Lead when a one-mana attacker is needed; activate evasion only when the opponent lacks haste blockers and the damage matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}; {1} makes it unblockable this turn except by creatures with haste; {2}, tap, sacrifice gains 3 life.
- Partners / packages: Sonic counters Gingerbrute because it has haste; Rabbit Battery and Bomat Courier share artifact vulnerability to Null Rod and Stony Silence.
- Role peers: Tin Street Dodger has a red evasion activation; Phoenix Chick provides flying haste but cannot block.
- Failure modes: Null Rod and Stony Silence stop its artifact activated abilities; Cursed Totem also stops its creature activated abilities.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against ground midrange and burn races if life gain matters; weak into artifact hate.
#### Malcolm, the Eyes
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, two-mana evasive second-spell engine role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine piece; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Rewards double-spelling by investigating, giving the deck Clue tokens to cash in after pressure empties the hand.
- Timing: Cast before a turn where you can reliably cast a second spell; prioritize when you can still attack or hold interaction.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}{R}; whenever you cast your second spell each turn, investigate and create a Clue token with "{2}, Sacrifice this token: Draw a card."
- Partners / packages: Cheap spell pairs include Ponder plus Lightning Bolt, Monastery Swiftspear plus Spell Pierce, Dragon's Rage Channeler plus Burst Lightning, and Gods Willing plus any threat.
- Role peers: Esper Sentinel taxes into cards; Spectral Sailor uses mana to draw; Bomat Courier stores cards through attacks.
- Failure modes: Null Rod and Stony Silence stop Clue activated abilities because Clues are artifacts; do not delay pressure just to investigate if the Clue cannot be cashed in soon.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against control and midrange; less useful against fast aggro where {2} to draw is too slow.
#### Dragon's Rage Channeler
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana selection threat role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; card selection; mechanic payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Surveils with Ponder, Brainstorm, Swan Song, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Magma Jet, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Arc Trail, Lightning Bolt, Faith's Shield, Path to Exile, and other noncreature spells, then becomes a 3/3 flying forced attacker at delirium.
- Timing: Cast early before cantrips and burn so surveil shapes draws and graveyard types; monitor delirium before relying on flying pressure.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; noncreature spells trigger surveil 1; delirium requires four or more card types among cards in your graveyard, then it gets +2/+2, flying, and attacks each combat if able.
- Partners / packages: Card types in this deck include creature, instant, sorcery, artifact, enchantment from Rest in Peace/Stony Silence sideboard, and land via fetchlands or Shard Volley sacrifice.
- Role peers: Delver of Secrets is another one-mana evasive transformation threat; Monastery Swiftspear is immediate haste pressure.
- Failure modes: Delirium forces attacks each combat if able, so do not enable it when you need Dragon's Rage Channeler to block.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent at filtering in unknown games; graveyard hate weakens delirium and surveil value.
#### Merry, Esquire of Rohan
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, red-white legendary pressure and draw role player.
- Role type: threat/clock; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Attacks with haste and can draw when it attacks alongside another legendary creature.
- Timing: Cast when another legendary attacker is available or when a 2/2 haste body pressures life; equipment matters if Rabbit Battery attaches.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}{W}; has first strike as long as it is equipped; whenever you attack with Merry and another legendary creature, draw a card.
- Partners / packages: Other legendary creatures are Sonic the Hedgehog, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Captain Lannery Storm, Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Kilo, Apogee Mind, and Malcolm, the Eyes; Rabbit Battery can equip it.
- Role peers: Robber of the Rich and Laelia provide attack-based card access; Esper Sentinel draws from opponent noncreature spells.
- Failure modes: Do not attack Merry into a bad trade just to draw if losing the body costs future pressure.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong when Sonic or Laelia can attack with it; weaker against removal before combat.
#### Mother of Runes
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana repeatable protection core piece.
- Role type: protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Protects your best creature from a chosen color or pushes it through blockers of that color every turn.
- Timing: Cast early when a key threat is expected; activate in response to removal or before combat when protection creates lethal.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; taps to give target creature you control protection from the color of your choice until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Protects Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Stormchaser Mage, Slickshot Show-Off, and Monastery Swiftspear.
- Role peers: Gods Willing and Faith's Shield are one-shot protection; Plumecreed Escort grants hexproof for one turn.
- Failure modes: Cursed Totem stops Mother of Runes; summoning sickness prevents immediate tapping unless it has haste from Rabbit Battery or another effect.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against colored spot removal and creature combat; weak against sweepers, edicts, and colorless removal.
#### Aven Mindcensor
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash hate flyer role player.
- Role type: hate piece; threat/clock; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Punishes opposing search effects while adding a flying flash clock that gets Sonic counters.
- Timing: Hold up for fetchlands, tutors, ramp searches, or commander search effects when possible; otherwise flash in end step to pressure.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {2}{W}; if an opponent would search a library, that player searches the top four cards of that library instead.
- Partners / packages: Works with Spell Pierce and Swan Song against tutor-heavy combo; pressures alongside Spectral Sailor, Lightning Stormkin, Stormchaser Mage, Phoenix Chick, and Hell's Thunder.
- Role peers: Pithing Needle can preempt activated search sources by name; Containment Priest stops certain creature-entry lines.
- Failure modes: Does not stop drawing cards or looking at cards unless the action is a library search.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against fetchlands, tutors, and ramp; low impact against decks with few searches.
#### Pyroblast
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, blue-matchup interaction bullet.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Protects your pressure from blue spells or destroys a blue permanent that blocks, races, or stabilizes.
- Timing: Bring in against blue-heavy decks; hold for a blue spell on the stack or a blue permanent whose removal changes the clock.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; choose one mode.
- Mode map: Counter mode targets a spell and counters it if it is blue. Destroy mode targets a permanent and destroys it if it is blue.
- Partners / packages: Protects Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, and Shard Volley from blue interaction.
- Role peers: Red Elemental Blast has stricter target wording for blue spell/permanent; Hydroblast is the red-hate equivalent.
- Failure modes: Pyroblast can target nonblue objects, but the effect checks blue on resolution; do not spend it where the target will not be blue.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against blue control, blue tempo, and blue combo; cut against nonblue creature decks.
#### Red Elemental Blast
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, blue-matchup interaction bullet.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Adds a second red one-mana answer to blue spells and blue permanents.
- Timing: Bring in when the opponent has enough blue targets that the card is live before turn four; hold for blue stack fights or high-impact blue permanents.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {R}; choose one mode.
- Mode map: Counter mode counters target blue spell. Destroy mode destroys target blue permanent.
- Partners / packages: Shields Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Slickshot Show-Off, Dreadhorde Arcanist, and Laelia from blue counters or bounce.
- Role peers: Pyroblast is similar but can target nonblue objects and checks blue on resolution; Spell Pierce and Swan Song are broader main-deck stack interaction.
- Failure modes: Unlike Pyroblast, the target must be blue to choose the mode legally.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against blue control and tempo; side out against light blue splashes without important blue targets.
#### Hydroblast
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, red-matchup interaction bullet.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-stack; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Counters red spells or destroys red permanents to preserve life total, stop burn, or clear red blockers.
- Timing: Bring in against red aggro, burn, red commanders, and red removal-heavy decks; hold when a red spell or permanent will decide combat or survival.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {U}; choose one mode.
- Mode map: Counter mode targets a spell and counters it if it is red. Destroy mode targets a permanent and destroys it if it is red.
- Partners / packages: Protects Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Monastery Swiftspear, Dreadhorde Arcanist, and Laelia from red burn or red blockers.
- Role peers: Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast answer blue; Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshares answer creatures regardless of color.
- Failure modes: Can target nonred objects, but does nothing unless the target is red on resolution.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against burn and red prowess; avoid against decks with only incidental red cards.
#### Wear // Tear
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, artifact/enchantment answer bullet.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Answers artifacts, enchantments, or potentially both when the split-card/fuse rules are available in the engine.
- Timing: Bring in against artifact, enchantment, prison, aura, equipment, and hate-permanent strategies; save for permanents that stop attacks, spells, or lethal.
- Inputs / outputs: Wear consumes {1}{R}; Tear consumes {W}; exact Oracle for each face is missing in the Card Reference, so target-sensitive claims must follow rules-engine legal actions.
- Mode map: Wear face: reference metadata lists {1}{R} Instant but missing effect text. Tear face: reference metadata lists {W} Instant but missing effect text. If the engine exposes fuse, use it only when both legal targets are high value and mana allows.
- Partners / packages: Overlaps with Cathar Commando for artifacts/enchantments and Abrade for artifacts; complements Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Stony Silence, and Pithing Needle against permanent engines.
- Role peers: Cathar Commando is main-deck sacrifice removal; Abrade destroys target artifact or deals 3 to target creature.
- Failure modes: Card Reference is missing Wear and Tear face Oracle text, so do not assert exact target classes beyond the engine's legal actions.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against prison and artifact/enchantment engines; do not bring in against creature-only decks.
#### Rest in Peace
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, graveyard hate bullet.
- Role type: hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Exiles all graveyards on entry and replaces future graveyard movement with exile, shutting off opposing graveyard plans while weakening your own graveyard value.
- Timing: Bring in when the opponent's graveyard plan matters more than your Dreadhorde Arcanist, Dragon's Rage Channeler delirium, Hell's Thunder unearth, or Phoenix Chick recursion.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; on entry exiles all graveyards; if a card or token would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead.
- Partners / packages: Conflicts with Dreadhorde Arcanist, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Hell's Thunder, Phoenix Chick, and sometimes Laelia if graveyard exile events are relevant.
- Role peers: Ash Zealot punishes spells cast from graveyard; Containment Priest stops certain creature entries without being cast.
- Failure modes: Does not counter a spell already cast using flashback, delve, or escape after costs are paid; deploy preemptively before the graveyard resource is spent.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against reanimator, escape, delve, flashback, and graveyard combo; poor against fair decks where your own graveyard value is stronger.
#### Stony Silence
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, artifact activated-ability hate bullet.
- Role type: hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Shuts off activated abilities of artifacts without occupying an artifact slot itself.
- Timing: Bring in when opposing artifact mana, equipment, Clues, Treasures, or combo artifacts matter more than your artifact activations.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; activated abilities of artifacts cannot be activated.
- Partners / packages: Overlaps with Null Rod; conflicts with Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, Clue tokens from Malcolm, the Eyes, Treasure tokens from Captain Lannery Storm and Sonic the Hedgehog, and Pithing Needle's own artifact activated abilities? Pithing Needle has no activated ability in the reference after entering.
- Role peers: Null Rod is the main-deck artifact version; Pithing Needle names one source.
- Failure modes: Does not stop triggered abilities or static abilities; does not stop nonartifact creature abilities unless they are from artifact creatures because the source is an artifact.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against artifact combo and equipment; risky if your own artifact utility is central to the game.
#### Containment Priest
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, flash creature-entry hate bullet.
- Role type: hate piece; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Stops nontoken creatures entering without being cast while adding a flash body.
- Timing: Hold up when the opponent is about to reanimate, blink, cheat, or put a creature directly onto the battlefield; cast proactively only if the hate is already needed or pressure matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{W}; if a nontoken creature would enter and it was not cast, exile it instead.
- Partners / packages: Pairs with Rest in Peace against graveyard creature decks and Swords to Plowshares against resolved creatures.
- Role peers: Aven Mindcensor stops library search; Rest in Peace stops graveyard movement; Pithing Needle can name activated cheat engines.
- Failure modes: Does not stop normally cast creature spells or token creatures entering.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against reanimator, blink, and cheat-into-play commanders; poor against normal creature curves.
#### Swords to Plowshares
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, premium creature-removal bullet.
- Role type: interaction-removal; sideboard bullet.
- Deck-specific job: Exiles must-answer creatures for one mana when Path to Exile density is not enough or giving a land is worse than giving life.
- Timing: Bring in against large commanders, combo creatures, lifelink blockers, and creatures that burn cannot kill; cast when the creature changes the race or combo window.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {W}; exiles target creature; its controller gains life equal to its power.
- Partners / packages: Clears attacks for Sonic the Hedgehog, Goblin Guide, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Hell's Thunder, and Tin Street Dodger.
- Role peers: Path to Exile exiles but may give a tapped basic land; Abrade kills smaller creatures with damage.
- Failure modes: Life gain can move the opponent out of burn range, so do not use it on low-impact creatures that can be raced.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against big creatures and commanders; less useful against creature-light control.
#### Abrade
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, flexible red removal bullet.
- Role type: modal utility; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Answers either a creature in 3-damage range or a target artifact, letting the sideboard cover mixed boards without overloading on narrow cards.
- Timing: Bring in against artifact decks, equipment, artifact creatures, and creature decks with key 3-toughness-or-less threats.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}{R}; choose one mode.
- Mode map: Creature mode deals 3 damage to target creature. Artifact mode destroys target artifact.
- Partners / packages: Complements Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Magma Jet, Arc Trail, Izzet Charm, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Cathar Commando, and Wear // Tear.
- Role peers: Lightning Bolt hits any target for 3; Cathar Commando and Wear // Tear answer artifacts/enchantments; Izzet Charm deals 2 to target creature.
- Failure modes: Cannot hit enchantments unless they are also artifacts? Abrade's artifact mode destroys target artifact only, and creature mode targets a creature; it does not answer nonartifact enchantments.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against artifact engines and creature tempo; weak against spell combo and large creatures outside 3 damage.
#### Pithing Needle
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, named activated-ability hate bullet.
- Role type: hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Names a visible or known card and shuts off non-mana activated abilities from sources with that name.
- Timing: Bring in against commanders, planeswalkers, activated lands, equipment, combo artifacts, and repeatable activated engines; cast once you know the correct name or can name an opposing commander.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes {1}; as it enters, choose a card name; activated abilities of sources with that name cannot be activated unless they are mana abilities.
- Partners / packages: Complements Null Rod against artifacts, Cursed Totem against creatures, Aven Mindcensor against search, and Stony Silence against broad artifact activations.
- Role peers: Null Rod and Stony Silence stop activated abilities of artifacts broadly; Cursed Totem stops activated abilities of creatures broadly.
- Failure modes: Do not guess hidden cards; naming your own Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, Mother of Runes, or other source can shut off your own non-mana activations too.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against commander-centric activated abilities and planeswalkers; weak against triggered or static abilities.
#### Island
- Deck role: Main deck, 4 copies, basic blue mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Provides painless {U} for Ponder, Brainstorm, Delver of Secrets, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Spectral Sailor, and blue halves of Sonic and Izzet cards.
- Timing: Fetch or play when blue interaction or selection is needed and life total makes shock/pain lands unattractive.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for {U}.
- Partners / packages: Fetchable by Flooded Strand and Scalding Tarn; helps Glacial Fortress enter untapped and Prairie Stream's basic-land count.
- Role peers: Hallowed Fountain, Steam Vents, and Prairie Stream are typed blue duals; Adarkar Wastes and Shivan Reef provide painful blue.
- Failure modes: Does not cast red one-drops or white protection by itself.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Prioritize against burn when blue is needed without life loss.
#### Mountain
- Deck role: Main deck, 8 copies, primary basic red mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Powers the deck's densest color: Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Phoenix Chick, Dragon's Rage Channeler, and many haste threats.
- Timing: Lead on Mountain when the hand has red one-drops or burn; fetch basic Mountain when life total or Blood Moon-like effects would punish shocklands, if such effects are visible.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for {R}.
- Partners / packages: Fetchable by Scalding Tarn and Arid Mesa; enables Clifftop Retreat, supports Shard Volley sacrifice decisions, and pays red-heavy costs like Ash Zealot and Slith Firewalker.
- Role peers: Sacred Foundry and Steam Vents are typed red duals; Battlefield Forge, Shivan Reef, Fiery Islet, and Sunbaked Canyon provide red with life costs.
- Failure modes: Does not cast blue selection or white protection alone.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: The safest red source against burn because it does not cost life.
#### Plains
- Deck role: Main deck, 3 copies, basic white mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Provides painless {W} for Esper Sentinel, Mother of Runes, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Path to Exile, and sideboard white hate.
- Timing: Fetch or play when white interaction is needed and shock/pain life is costly; avoid over-prioritizing Plains if the hand still lacks red pressure.
- Inputs / outputs: Taps for {W}.
- Partners / packages: Fetchable by Flooded Strand and Arid Mesa; helps Glacial Fortress and Clifftop Retreat enter untapped and Prairie Stream's basic-land count.
- Role peers: Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, and Prairie Stream are typed white duals; Adarkar Wastes and Battlefield Forge provide painful white.
- Failure modes: Does not cast red one-drops or blue cantrips alone.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Important against burn and removal-heavy decks where white protection must stay open without life payments.

## Interaction Priorities
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Remove blockers before engines when damage converts immediately into a two-turn clock. Spend Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Arc Trail, Magma Jet, Fanatical Firebrand, Izzet Charm, Path to Exile, or Swords to Plowshares first on creatures that stop Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Stormchaser Mage, Monastery Swiftspear, Goblin Guide, Robber of the Rich, or evasive threats from attacking profitably.
- Exile first only when destruction or damage is insufficient. Use Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares on a commander, large lifelinker, recursive creature, combo creature, or single blocker that invalidates combat; avoid giving resources for a creature that can be raced, tapped, pinged, or ignored.
- Counter spells that answer the clock or establish an engine. Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Hydroblast should protect a developed battlefield, stop sweepers, stop combo setup, or fight opposing permission; do not spend them on low-impact cantrips when pressure is already ahead and no key permanent is exposed.
- Destroy artifacts and enchantments when the visible permanent changes the race. Cathar Commando, Wear // Tear, Abrade, Null Rod, Stony Silence, Cursed Totem, Rest in Peace, Pithing Needle, and Containment Priest are for opposing engines, lock pieces, graveyard lines, activated-ability commanders, and combo tools; do not deploy a hate card into an archetype where it only reduces your own tempo.
- Bounce or protect your own creature before losing the engine. Whitemane Lion, Zephyr Sentinel, Mother of Runes, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, and Plumecreed Escort should save Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Delver of Secrets, Kaza, Roil Chaser, or the only lethal attacker before they are used for marginal damage. Card text check required for Plumecreed Escort and Sonic the Hedgehog when the exact protection or synergy mode matters.
- Discard with Izzet Charm or cleanup by preserving pressure plus colors. Discard excess tapped lands after stable colors, redundant one-drops that no longer attack, or situational hate with no visible target; keep burn if it can become reach, keep protection if a key creature is ahead, and keep blue permission when the opponent is representing a high-impact noncreature turn.
- Bait removal with replaceable threats before committing fragile payoffs. Lead with Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Phoenix Chick, Gingerbrute, Tin Street Dodger, or Bomat Courier when the hand contains Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or Sonic the Hedgehog and no protection is ready.
- Ignore cards that do not affect the next two turn cycles. Do not spend burn, counters, or sideboard answers on slow value permanents, small blockers that cannot block evasion, or graveyard pieces before they have a visible payoff; convert that window into attacks, commander pressure, or card selection.
- Change priorities by archetype. Against aggro, remove attackers and protect life before holding narrow permission. Against control, counter sweepers and removal while committing threats in waves. Against combo, prioritize Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Aven Mindcensor, Containment Priest, Pithing Needle, Rest in Peace, Null Rod, Cursed Totem, and fast lethal over creature trading. Against artifacts or activated engines, value Wear // Tear, Abrade, Stony Silence, Null Rod, Cursed Totem, and Pithing Needle above ordinary burn.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Combat And Trading Rules
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Attack when the exchange keeps pressure alive. Favor attacks with Sonic the Hedgehog, Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Stormchaser Mage, Lightning Stormkin, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Hell's Thunder, Phoenix Chick, Gingerbrute, Tin Street Dodger, Robber of the Rich, Slith Firewalker, Storm Entity, and Laelia, the Blade Reforged when blocks either fail, trade down for the opponent, or unlock burn reach.
- Preserve engine creatures over small damage. Do not trade Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Mother of Runes, Esper Sentinel, or Aven Mindcensor for a generic blocker unless the trade enables lethal, stops lethal, or the card is about to be invalidated by board state.
- Use protection to win combat only at meaningful thresholds. Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, Plumecreed Escort, Zephyr Sentinel, and Whitemane Lion are strongest when they force lethal, blank removal, save the only fast clock, or let a pumped creature survive; do not spend protection to save a replaceable one-drop from a trade that leaves damage and tempo ahead.
- Block aggressively below stabilizing life totals. Against creature decks, begin valuing blocks highly once life is near burn range or the opponent has a visible two-turn attack clock; trade Fanatical Firebrand, Reckless Lackey, Sawblade Scamp, Bomat Courier, Tin Street Dodger, or Rabbit Battery before taking damage that forces future burn to become defensive.
- Race control and combo unless a specific blocker matters. Keep attackers back only when the opponent has a visible lethal swing, a must-block commander, or a combat-trigger creature that changes the game; otherwise pressure life total so Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, and sideboard blasts can close or protect the final turn.
- Sequence prowess and pump-like attacks after checking mana. Monastery Swiftspear, Stormchaser Mage, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Dreadhorde Arcanist, and Storm Entity reward precombat spells only when the spell improves damage or selection without exposing the attacker to a worse block; hold instant burn until blocks when hidden information and legal actions make the opponent commit first.
- Treat first-strike, haste, evasion, and unblockable text as race tools only when exposed by the engine. Ash Zealot, Gingerbrute, Tin Street Dodger, Phoenix Chick, Hell's Thunder, Lightning Stormkin, and Sonic the Hedgehog should follow visible legal action text; if exact combat text is unclear, attack only when the engine shows the creature can legally pressure without sacrificing a key blocker.
- Trade differently by archetype. Against aggro, trade early to preserve life and let card quality plus commander access matter. Against midrange, avoid low-value trades and force them to answer evasive or protected threats. Against control, overextend only enough to demand an answer. Against combo, attack with maximum safe power and block only to prevent immediate lethal.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Selection And Tutor Rules
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Use Ponder and Brainstorm to fix the next two turns, not to admire perfect cards. Prioritize missing land drops first, then untapped color access for Sonic the Hedgehog plus one-mana interaction, then pressure pieces such as Delver of Secrets, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dreadhorde Arcanist, or burn that turns attacks into lethal.
- Cast Ponder before the land drop when the hand needs a land or a specific color. Cast Ponder after the land drop only when mana is already fixed and the choice is between threat, protection, or reach for the current turn cycle.
- Pair Brainstorm with Flooded Strand, Scalding Tarn, or Arid Mesa when possible. Put back excess lands, dead hate, or expensive cards that do not affect the next combat; avoid locking away a needed protection spell when Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, or Dreadhorde Arcanist is exposed.
- Use Magma Jet scry as a tempo filter. Keep burn, protection, or a hasty/evasive threat when attacking matters next turn; bottom slow hate like Null Rod, Cursed Totem, or Aven Mindcensor when the opponent has no visible artifact, activated-ability, or search plan.
- Treat Dragon's Rage Channeler selection as graveyard-aware filtering. Keep cards that enable pressure, mana, or immediate interaction; surveil away duplicate colors, dead sideboard cards, or late one-drops when the battlefield already has attackers. Card text check required for exact delirium and trigger behavior at runtime.
- Use Dreadhorde Arcanist as pseudo-selection only when the graveyard contains a legal spell that advances the board. Prefer recasting Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Ponder, Brainstorm, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Spell Pierce, or Swan Song when the engine exposes the action and the attack is safe; do not attack Dreadhorde Arcanist into a bad trade just to access a marginal graveyard spell.
- Convert exile and impulse resources quickly when timing demands it. Robber of the Rich, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Bomat Courier, and possible Sonic the Hedgehog or Kilo, Apogee Mind text can create temporary card access; Card text check required for Sonic the Hedgehog, Kilo, Apogee Mind, Malcolm, the Eyes, Masked Meower, and Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder before relying on any specific exile, draw, or selection mode.
- Search with fetch lands for color, not deck thinning. Flooded Strand, Scalding Tarn, and Arid Mesa should find Hallowed Fountain, Steam Vents, Sacred Foundry, Prairie Stream, or basics according to the hand's current costs, life pressure, and whether Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Path to Exile, Brave the Elements, or red burn must remain available.
- Treat this list as having no true main-deck tutor package. Selection decisions should improve immediate mana, threat density, protection, or reach rather than chase hidden singleton cards that may not appear.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Priority And Stack Rules
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Spend counters on spells that beat the board you are building. Swan Song, Spell Pierce, and Izzet Charm should stop sweepers, combo enablers, removal aimed at Sonic the Hedgehog or a large threat, or a blocker/engine that invalidates attacks; let low-impact draw or setup resolve when your clock is ahead and mana is needed for pressure.
- Hold protection until the opponent commits a target or combat block. Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, Plumecreed Escort, Whitemane Lion, and Zephyr Sentinel should answer visible removal, force lethal, or save the key attacker; do not pre-spend them into open mana unless the engine shows a current lethal or survival line.
- Use burn on the stack only when timing changes the outcome. Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Magma Jet, Arc Trail, Izzet Charm, and Fanatical Firebrand can remove a blocker before combat, finish a planeswalker or player, or stop lethal pressure; otherwise wait until blocks or end step to preserve information and prowess-style triggers.
- Cast combat tricks and instant burn around prowess and attack triggers deliberately. Monastery Swiftspear, Stormchaser Mage, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Dreadhorde Arcanist, and Storm Entity reward spell timing, but the correct window depends on legal attacks, blockers, and removal risk shown by the engine.
- Activate or sacrifice permanents only for a visible exchange. Cathar Commando should answer a meaningful artifact or enchantment; Bomat Courier should cash in when the hand is low or the exiled pile matters; Spectral Sailor should draw when mana would otherwise be unused; Fanatical Firebrand should ping only when it removes a creature, enables lethal, or prevents a better opposing attack.
- Treat optional payments and ability choices as tactical commitments. Kaza, Roil Chaser, Captain Lannery Storm, Reckless Lackey, Rabbit Battery, Gingerbrute, and equipment/attachment-like actions should be used when they increase current damage, unlock mana, or protect a key line; Card text check required where the engine exposes unfamiliar options.
- Let opposing spells resolve when answering them costs the race. If the spell does not kill the key threat, stop lethal, create a lock, or outpace your clock, preserve Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Abrade, and Wear // Tear for a higher-impact window.
- Respect graveyard and exile timing before choosing actions. Rest in Peace can shut off Dreadhorde Arcanist and graveyard synergies as well as the opponent, so deploy it only when the opposing graveyard plan matters more than your own recursion or selection value.

## Sideboard Map
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Sideboard from the active opposing plan, not from generic card strength. Sonic the Hedgehog wants cheap pressure plus one-mana interaction, so each sideboard card must either clear a blocker, stop a decisive spell, protect the race, or disable an opposing engine while preserving enough red one-drops and evasive threats to keep attacking.
- Pyroblast enters against blue commanders, blue control, blue tempo, blue combo, and any opponent whose visible plan depends on blue card draw, countermagic, bounce, or a blue finisher. Its role is stack protection when Sonic the Hedgehog, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, or a lethal burn spell is exposed; its creature-removal mode matters only when the legal target is blue and tempo-positive. When bad: avoid it against nonblue creature decks and artifact engines where it can sit idle. Role changes: on the play it can protect a threat; on the draw it often answers the opponent's first major blue stabilizer.
- Red Elemental Blast follows the same matchup rule as Pyroblast, but treat the second blast effect as density for blue-heavy games rather than automatic inclusion against a light blue splash. Add it when the opponent has enough blue spells that drawing either blast is live before turn four. When bad: reduce reliance on it when the opponent shows mostly nonblue permanents or when Sonic the Hedgehog needs creature removal more than permission.
- Hydroblast enters against red aggro, red burn, red prowess, red commanders, and red removal-heavy midrange. Use it to stop a burn spell aimed at a key attacker, counter a red sweeper, or remove a red blocker that prevents a winning attack. When bad: avoid it against decks where the only red cards are small support pieces. Role changes: when life is low, Hydroblast becomes survival interaction; when ahead, it becomes protection for the final attack.
- Wear // Tear enters against artifact, enchantment, prison, equipment, aura, and hate-permanent strategies. Use Wear // Tear when the target actually blocks combat, disables spells, prevents attacks, or creates a lock; do not spend it on a marginal permanent while Null Rod, Cursed Totem, or pressure already handles the opposing plan. When bad: avoid it when the opponent presents mostly creatures and stack interaction. Role changes: against artifact-plus-enchantment decks, preserve the fused option when the engine exposes it and mana allows.
- Rest in Peace enters against graveyard combo, reanimator, escape, delve, flashback, recursive creature engines, and graveyard-centered control. Deploy it when the opponent's graveyard matters more than Dreadhorde Arcanist, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Robber of the Rich, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Bomat Courier, or any visible graveyard value on your side. When bad: avoid it when your own graveyard recursion and selection are carrying the game and the opponent has no visible graveyard payoff. Role changes: against combo it is a lock piece; against fair decks it is a tempo tax only if it stops recurring threats.
- Stony Silence enters against artifact mana, artifact combo, equipment, activated artifact engines, and treasure-heavy decks. It overlaps with Null Rod, so include both only when the opposing deck visibly depends on artifacts or when one copy is likely to be removed. When bad: avoid it when your own artifact permanents such as Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, or Reckless Lackey are more important than the opposing artifacts. Role changes: against artifact combo it is a primary hate card; against equipment it is a support card behind removal and pressure.
- Containment Priest enters against reanimation, blink, cheat-into-play effects, creature tutors that put creatures directly onto the battlefield, and commanders that bypass normal casting. Hold it when the opponent must commit into open mana; cast it proactively only when the visible engine is already active or when passing preserves the same pressure. When bad: avoid it against normal creature curves and spell combo. Role changes: against reanimator it is a trap card; against blink it is a lock piece if protected.
- Swords to Plowshares enters against large creatures, must-answer commanders, lifelink blockers, combo creatures, and threats that Path to Exile alone cannot cover. Use it even if the life gain is unpleasant when the creature would stop lethal, race Sonic the Hedgehog, or enable an immediate combo. When bad: avoid it against low-creature control where every threat can already be raced or burned. Role changes: against aggro it is survival removal; against combo it is stack-adjacent creature interaction after the permanent resolves.
- Abrade enters against creature decks with key small or medium threats, artifact decks where Wear // Tear and Stony Silence need backup, and flexible matchups where the opponent can shift between creatures and artifacts. When bad: avoid it against spell combo, enchantment engines, and creature decks whose threats exceed Abrade's damage range. Role changes: against artifacts it is answer density; against creatures it is tempo removal before combat.
- Pithing Needle enters against commanders, planeswalkers, equipment, activated lands, combo artifacts, graveyard engines with activated abilities, and repeatable creature abilities that Cursed Totem does not fully solve. Name only a card visible in public information or a commander known from match context; do not guess hidden hand cards. When bad: avoid it against decks with mostly triggered abilities, static abilities, or redundant activated threats. Role changes: early it can preempt a commander; late it should name the permanent already constraining attacks or interaction.

Side in: Swords to Plowshares; Pithing Needle; Containment Priest
Cut: Null Rod; Magma Jet; Hell's Thunder
- Add role cards: against blue-heavy decks, add Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast before slower hate. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Arc Trail, Cursed Totem, Null Rod, or Magma Jet when those cards do not answer the visible opposing plan.
- Add role cards: against red pressure, add Hydroblast and Swords to Plowshares before narrow tax pieces. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Aven Mindcensor, Null Rod, Cursed Totem, or expensive threats when life total is the limiting resource.
- Add role cards: against graveyard decks, add Rest in Peace and Containment Priest, then Swords to Plowshares if creature payoffs matter. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Dreadhorde Arcanist value expectations, Dragon's Rage Channeler graveyard expectations, and slow damage-only spells when graveyard hate is the real axis.
- Add role cards: against artifact engines, add Stony Silence, Wear // Tear, Abrade, and Pithing Needle according to visible targets. Reduce main-deck emphasis: artifact synergies from Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, and Reckless Lackey when Stony Silence or Null Rod will constrain them.
- Add role cards: against creature-dense decks, add Swords to Plowshares and Abrade when their creatures invalidate attacks or threaten lethal. Reduce main-deck emphasis: Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and other narrow stack cards when the opponent is winning through battlefield material.
- Add role cards: against prison and hate permanents, add Wear // Tear and Abrade, with Pithing Needle for activated permanents. Reduce main-deck emphasis: fragile one-toughness pressure when the opponent's board already blanks combat and the sideboard card can reopen attacks.
- Preserve pressure after sideboarding. Do not overload on answers so heavily that opening hands lose one-drop threats, evasive attackers, Sonic the Hedgehog pressure, or burn reach; a hand of only hate cards and lands should be treated as suspect unless the opponent's known plan folds to that hate.
- Recheck anti-synergy after every sideboard decision. Rest in Peace weakens Dreadhorde Arcanist and graveyard filtering; Stony Silence can weaken Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, and Reckless Lackey; Pithing Needle can conflict with your own named permanent if the wrong name is selected. Let the rules engine and visible game state confirm all legal effects before relying on them.

## Matchup Guidance
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Aggro: Stabilize first, then race with evasive pressure and burn reach. Keep hands with early creatures such as Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Delver of Secrets, Tin Street Dodger, Gingerbrute, Phoenix Chick, or Spectral Sailor plus red or white interaction; ship slow hands that rely on Null Rod, Cursed Totem, or Aven Mindcensor to matter. Use Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Arc Trail, Magma Jet, Path to Exile, and sideboard Swords to Plowshares to break tempo before combat, not after damage has already forced a bad race. Hydroblast is a premium sideboard card against red aggro; Abrade is acceptable when opposing creatures are in range or artifacts also matter.
- Control: Lead with must-answer cheap threats and protect the threat that is already winning. Prioritize one-drop pressure, Sonic the Hedgehog only when commander deployment is legal and the timing does not walk into known interaction, and card selection from Ponder or Brainstorm to keep mana and threats flowing. Hold Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Izzet Charm, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, Plumecreed Escort, and Whitemane Lion for decisive turns instead of low-impact exchanges. Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast enter against blue control; Pithing Needle enters when a commander, planeswalker, activated land, or visible engine is the real stabilizer.
- Combo: Race while reserving one piece of disruption for the commitment turn. Mulligan toward pressure plus disruption rather than slow value; a hand with Tin Street Dodger or Monastery Swiftspear plus Spell Pierce or Swan Song is often stronger than a hand with several medium creatures and no interaction. Cursed Totem, Null Rod, Aven Mindcensor, Containment Priest, Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, Pithing Needle, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Wear // Tear, and Abrade are matchup-dependent lock or answer pieces; use only those that map to the visible or known combo axis. Do not fire burn at life total if the same card may need to kill a combo creature.
- Tempo: Avoid falling behind on mana efficiency. Sequence untapped lands and one-mana plays so Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Burst Lightning, Lightning Bolt, Gods Willing, or Faith's Shield can participate in the same turn cycle as a threat. Fight over blockers, bounce, and removal that would reset your only real clock; let low-impact cantrips resolve unless they clearly find a missing combo piece or answer. Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast are strong against blue tempo, but do not overload on narrow answers if doing so removes the creature density needed to punish their stumbles.
- Midrange: Preserve card quality while forcing awkward removal. Make the opponent spend premium answers on cheap threats before committing Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Zealous Conscripts, Hell's Thunder, Storm Entity, Slickshot Show-Off, Sprite Dragon, or Sonic the Hedgehog. Use Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Spectral Sailor, Bomat Courier, Robber of the Rich, and Dreadhorde Arcanist as legal-action engines only when their text and current board state support the plan; Card text check required for unfamiliar Universes Beyond cards before assigning engine value. Side in Swords to Plowshares or Abrade when midrange creatures dominate combat.
- Big mana: Shorten the game and disrupt the mana engine. Keep hands that produce early pressure plus either Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Izzet Charm, Aven Mindcensor, Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Stony Silence, Pithing Needle, Wear // Tear, or Abrade according to the opposing acceleration type. Use Shard Volley, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Hell's Thunder, Phoenix Chick, Gingerbrute, Tin Street Dodger, and evasive flyers to convert early turns into a closing clock. Do not spend Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares on a minor creature if a large payoff or commander is likely to follow.
- Graveyard: Decide whether graveyard denial hurts them more than it hurts you before committing Rest in Peace. Rest in Peace is excellent against reanimation, escape, delve, flashback, recursive threats, or graveyard combo, but it weakens your own Dreadhorde Arcanist lines and may reduce Dragon's Rage Channeler value. Containment Priest is the trap card when creatures enter without being cast; hold it for the relevant window if the rules engine offers priority and passing preserves the threat of action. Keep pressure high, because graveyard decks often recover if hate does not also close the game.
- Artifact/enchantment: Identify whether the permanent is a mana source, lock piece, combo engine, or blocker before choosing an answer. Stony Silence and Null Rod are broad plans against activated artifacts, but they can constrain Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, and Reckless Lackey, so do not lean on your own artifact activations after committing them. Wear // Tear answers artifacts or enchantments when legal targets are visible; Abrade is the flexible backup for artifacts or creatures. Pithing Needle should name a visible activated permanent or a known commander, not a guessed hidden card.
- Go-wide: Protect life total and preserve sweep-adjacent exchanges. Arc Trail is one of the best main-deck tools when the engine exposes two legal creature targets; Fanatical Firebrand, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, and Abrade can keep the first wave manageable. Do not attack needed blockers into bad trades unless Brave the Elements, Faith's Shield, Gods Willing, Mother of Runes, or Plumecreed Escort can force damage or protect from the crack-back. Captain Lannery Storm, Akoum Battlesinger, Kolaghan Stormsinger, and other attack-scaling creatures need board context; Card text check required where exact buffs or triggers are not confirmed.
- Single-threat: Answer the threat cleanly or ignore it only when lethal pressure is already credible. Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshares are the premium answers to a large commander, lifelink blocker, or combo creature; Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Abrade, Izzet Charm, and combat tricks cover smaller threats. Pithing Needle is correct when the single threat is powerful because of an activated ability, while Cursed Totem is correct when multiple creature activations matter. Zealous Conscripts can become a swing card if its legal action text offers a decisive steal line; Card text check required before relying on exact target or duration.
- Burn: Treat life total as the primary resource. Fetch shock lands such as Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, and Steam Vents cautiously; prefer untapped pain lands only when the point of damage enables a spell that changes the race. Hydroblast is the strongest sideboard card, Swords to Plowshares can remove a high-pressure creature even if life gain is irrelevant to you, and Faith's Shield, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, Plumecreed Escort, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, and Izzet Charm can protect against key burn or blockers when legal. Do not overpay life for velocity from Fiery Islet, Sunbaked Canyon, Adarkar Wastes, Battlefield Forge, Shivan Reef, or Mana Confluence unless the turn meaningfully advances lethal or survival.
- Removal-heavy decks: Diversify threats and make protection trade up. Lead with recursive or low-investment attackers such as Phoenix Chick, Hell's Thunder, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Delver of Secrets, Monastery Swiftspear, Goblin Guide, and Tin Street Dodger before committing higher-value threats. Hold Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, Plumecreed Escort, Whitemane Lion, and Zephyr Sentinel for the threat that carries the clock or for a removal spell that would also ruin combat. Do not spend all cantrips looking for more creatures if the battlefield already contains a protected threat and the missing resource is interaction.
- Mixed unknown decks: Default to pressure plus flexible mana until public information identifies the axis. Keep broad cards such as Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Path to Exile, Izzet Charm, Ponder, Brainstorm, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, and Sonic the Hedgehog over narrow hate when the opponent's plan is not yet known. Delay deploying Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Rest in Peace, or Stony Silence until they either constrain a visible opposing engine or the matchup guide confirms the target axis. Use the rules engine's legal actions and revealed information to update the matchup label every turn.

## Specific Matchup Notes
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- General/archetype-only note: Exact opponents are absent, so treat every matchup label as provisional and let revealed cards, commanders, public zones, and legal actions override assumptions. Keep the baseline plan as early pressure from Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Tin Street Dodger, Gingerbrute, Phoenix Chick, Lightning Stormkin, Stormchaser Mage, Sprite Dragon, Slickshot Show-Off, and Sonic the Hedgehog, then spend interaction only when it changes the clock, protects the clock, or stops a visible engine.
- Blue tempo or control: Prioritize resolving one efficient threat and protecting it through the first answer. Add role cards: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Pithing Needle when a visible commander or permanent has a critical activated ability. Priority targets are opposing draw engines, sweepers when stack interaction is offered, and blockers that stop evasive pressure. Do not walk Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Zealous Conscripts, Storm Entity, or Sonic the Hedgehog into open interaction unless waiting gives the opponent a better stabilizing turn.
- Red aggro or burn: Treat life as the scarce resource and avoid unnecessary pain from Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, Steam Vents, Adarkar Wastes, Battlefield Forge, Shivan Reef, Mana Confluence, Fiery Islet, and Sunbaked Canyon. Add role cards: Hydroblast; Swords to Plowshares; Abrade when artifact creatures or high-pressure small creatures are visible. Priority targets are haste attackers, repeat damage sources, and blockers that force your attackers into bad trades. Hold Faith's Shield, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, and Plumecreed Escort for lethal prevention or to preserve a race-winning creature.
- Graveyard or reanimation: Add role cards: Rest in Peace; Containment Priest; Swords to Plowshares; Pithing Needle for a visible activated graveyard engine. Priority targets are the first legal reanimation payoff, repeat recursion source, or graveyard-enabling permanent that outscales your clock. Check whether Rest in Peace turns off your own Dreadhorde Arcanist or weakens Dragon's Rage Channeler before committing it; pressure must continue after hate resolves.
- Artifact or activated-engine decks: Add role cards: Stony Silence; Wear // Tear; Abrade; Pithing Needle. Priority targets are mana artifacts, combo artifacts, activated commanders, and permanents that prevent combat damage from mattering. Remember that Null Rod and Stony Silence can also constrain Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, and Reckless Lackey, so make artifact-activation decisions before locking the battlefield when legal.
- Creature swarms: Preserve blockers until a protection spell, Arc Trail, Fanatical Firebrand, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, or Abrade can turn combat. Add role cards: Swords to Plowshares; Abrade; Hydroblast only against red boards; Wear // Tear only when an artifact or enchantment is part of the swarm plan. Priority targets are anthem-like permanents, evasive attackers, and creatures that make blocking impossible. Card text check required for Masked Meower, Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder, Kilo, Apogee Mind, Malcolm, the Eyes, and Sonic the Hedgehog before treating them as tribal payoff anchors.
2026-06-14 15:24:54 -03:00
## Risk Summary
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Mana risk: The deck is Jeskai, singleton, and tempo-sensitive, so hands with only one color or only tapped lands can lose before Ponder, Brainstorm, or Magma Jet fixes the draw. Fetch shock lands only when the color unlocks an immediate play, and do not spend pain-land damage casually against red or creature pressure.
- Matchup risk: Narrow hate such as Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, and Pithing Needle can be excellent or nearly blank depending on the opponent. Delay narrow permanents until the opposing axis is visible or the sideboard guide has high confidence.
- Draw risk: Ponder and Brainstorm can smooth weak hands, but they do not replace a missing clock. Avoid keeping slow reactive hands with Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Izzet Charm, and protection but no early threat unless the opponent is known to be faster and fragile.
- Over-sideboarding risk: Adding Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Wear // Tear, Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, Containment Priest, Swords to Plowshares, Abrade, and Pithing Needle can dilute the threat count. Reduce main-deck emphasis only from cards that are low-impact in the revealed matchup, not from the entire pressure package.
- Graveyard risk: Rest in Peace may reduce your own Dreadhorde Arcanist and Dragon's Rage Channeler value. Use it when the opponent's graveyard plan is more important than your recursion or filtering.
- Sweeper/removal risk: One protected creature is often better than three exposed creatures against removal-heavy decks. Sequence Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Phoenix Chick, and Tin Street Dodger before committing Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Zealous Conscripts, or Sonic the Hedgehog into likely sweepers.
- Closer risk: Burst damage from Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Hell's Thunder, Slickshot Show-Off, Storm Entity, and Zealous Conscripts can finish games, but using burn early on minor creatures may leave no reach. Count visible damage before choosing removal mode.
- Interaction risk: Spell Pierce, Swan Song, Izzet Charm, Path to Exile, and sideboard blasts are timing-sensitive. Respect the rules-engine stack and choose them only for legal visible threats, not guessed hidden cards.
- Sequencing risk: Protection, bounce, and flash bodies such as Whitemane Lion, Zephyr Sentinel, Gods Willing, Faith's Shield, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, Cathar Commando, Aven Mindcensor, and Plumecreed Escort require open mana or correct priority windows. Do not tap out for marginal damage when holding up one of these cards changes combat, protects the clock, or stops a visible search or engine.

## Test Feedback Checklist
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Deciding factor: Identify the turn where the game moved permanently toward win or loss, then record whether the cause was early pressure, mana failure, protection timing, a missed stack window, sideboard hate, or failure to close with burn.
- Mulligans: Record every opening hand with land count, colors, first threat, and first interaction spell. Flag keeps where Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Tin Street Dodger, Gingerbrute, Phoenix Chick, or Sonic the Hedgehog was absent and the hand relied on Ponder, Brainstorm, or Magma Jet to become functional.
- Mana: Check whether Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, Steam Vents, Adarkar Wastes, Battlefield Forge, Shivan Reef, Mana Confluence, Fiery Islet, or Sunbaked Canyon life payments changed the race. Note any games where Mystic Monastery, Prairie Stream, Sundown Pass, or a slow fetch sequence delayed a one-drop, protection spell, or counterspell.
- Velocity: Track whether Ponder, Brainstorm, Bomat Courier, Spectral Sailor, Robber of the Rich, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Dreadhorde Arcanist, and Fiery Islet converted into real cards or only consumed mana while the opponent stabilized.
- Engine pressure: Record whether Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Slickshot Show-Off, Storm Entity, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Akoum Battlesinger, Kolaghan Stormsinger, and Sonic the Hedgehog actually rewarded the deck for chaining spells and creatures. Card text check required for Sonic the Hedgehog before calling any engine result confirmed.
- Removal use: For Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Arc Trail, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, Path to Exile, Fanatical Firebrand, Cathar Commando, and Zealous Conscripts, record whether the spell removed a blocker, stopped lethal, cleared a commander, or should have been saved as reach.
- Protection use: Record each Faith's Shield, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, Plumecreed Escort, Whitemane Lion, and Zephyr Sentinel decision. Mark whether the protected creature remained a clock, whether the play answered visible removal, and whether holding mana open cost too much tempo.
- Sideboard impact: For Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Wear // Tear, Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, Containment Priest, Swords to Plowshares, Abrade, and Pithing Needle, record the first legal target or use case seen. Mark cards that were drawn with no relevant visible target.
- Closing: Count missed lethal or near-lethal turns involving Hell's Thunder, Slickshot Show-Off, Storm Entity, Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Zealous Conscripts, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Gingerbrute, Tin Street Dodger, and evasion creatures.
- Role accuracy: After each match, state whether the deck was supposed to be beatdown, tempo-control, hate-bear pressure, or defensive race management. Flag decisions where the pilot protected life while ahead on damage or spent burn on creatures while behind on reach.
- Stranded cards: List cards stuck in hand for mana, timing, no target, or low impact. Pay special attention to Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Brave the Elements, Aven Mindcensor, Deceiver Exarch, Kaza, Roil Chaser, and high-cost threats.
- Mistakes: Record visible legal actions declined by the pilot that later mattered, especially missed attacks, missed blocks, missed protection windows, premature Shard Volley, and passing with Spell Pierce or Swan Song against a visible decisive spell.
- Overperformers and underperformers: Name the exact cards that created wins or failed to matter, separating battlefield pressure, reach, protection, selection, hate, and sideboard roles.

## First Tuning Questions
2026-06-19 18:54:22 -03:00
- Mana base: Are three colors reliable enough for one-drop pressure plus open white or blue protection, or do painful and tapped lands cost more games than the splash cards win?
- Threat density: Does the deck need more reliable early attackers, or are Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Tin Street Dodger, Gingerbrute, Phoenix Chick, and Sonic the Hedgehog enough when supported by selection?
- Velocity package: Are Ponder, Brainstorm, Magma Jet, Bomat Courier, Spectral Sailor, Robber of the Rich, Dreadhorde Arcanist, and Laelia, the Blade Reforged producing enough cards to recover after removal, or is the deck losing whenever the first threat dies?
- Protection balance: Are Faith's Shield, Gods Willing, Brave the Elements, Mother of Runes, Plumecreed Escort, Whitemane Lion, and Zephyr Sentinel protecting decisive threats, or are too many hands reactive without a clock?
- Interaction balance: Is the mix of Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Arc Trail, Magma Jet, Izzet Charm, Path to Exile, Swan Song, Spell Pierce, Null Rod, Cursed Totem, Cathar Commando, and Aven Mindcensor aligned with the actual opponents, or does the deck need clearer pressure-first and control-first configurations?
- Closer plan: Are Hell's Thunder, Storm Entity, Slickshot Show-Off, Zealous Conscripts, Laelia, the Blade Reforged, Sonic the Hedgehog, and burn reach ending games before stabilization, or does the list need fewer medium attackers and more unavoidable finishing power?
- Tribal or combo identity: Do Akoum Battlesinger, Kolaghan Stormsinger, Kaza, Roil Chaser, Sprite Dragon, Stormchaser Mage, Lightning Stormkin, and Sonic the Hedgehog form a coherent engine, or are they split between creature-tribal pressure and spell-chain payoffs? Card text check required for Sonic the Hedgehog, Kilo, Apogee Mind, Malcolm, the Eyes, Masked Meower, and Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder before making identity changes.
- Hate permanents: Are Null Rod and Cursed Totem winning enough games to justify their anti-synergy with Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, Reckless Lackey, Mother of Runes, and some sideboard plans?
- Sideboard allocation: Are Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Hydroblast, Wear // Tear, Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, Containment Priest, Swords to Plowshares, Abrade, and Pithing Needle covering the matchups actually lost, or are several slots overlapping while creature swarms, graveyard decks, red pressure, or blue control remain problematic?
- Role conflicts: Does the pilot lose more from overextending into answers or from waiting too long with protection and counters available? Use this to tune whether future guidance should favor one protected threat, wide pressure, or faster burn conversion.
## Veles Tactical Policy
### Policy: Pregame Tempo Role
Priority: Medium
Decision families: pregame
Cards: Sonic the Hedgehog; Goblin Guide; Monastery Swiftspear; Delver of Secrets; Dragon's Rage Channeler; Esper Sentinel
Phase windows: Pregame and opening choice.
Runtime cues: pregame role decision; play/draw prompt.
Use when: Veles asks for a pregame choice or opening role.
Avoid when: no pregame choice is legal.
Instructions: Prefer the play when legal because the deck converts one-drop pressure plus cheap protection into tempo. Treat Sonic the Hedgehog as commander pressure only after runtime card text confirms its relevant abilities. Pilot skill floor: basic tempo sequencing.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Mulligan For Functional Pressure
Priority: High
Decision families: mulligan
Cards: Goblin Guide; Monastery Swiftspear; Delver of Secrets; Dragon's Rage Channeler; Gingerbrute; Tin Street Dodger; Phoenix Chick; Ponder; Brainstorm
Phase windows: Opening hand and London mulligan bottoms.
Runtime cues: mulligan prompt; opening hand; bottom-card prompt.
Use when: Veles asks keep/mulligan or bottom choices.
Avoid when: hand contents are hidden from the acting player.
Instructions: Keep hands with two usable mana sources, at least one early threat or selection spell, and castable colors. Ship hands with no early action, one land without Ponder or Brainstorm, or interaction-only hands that cannot pressure. Bottom the slowest redundant threat or narrow hate before cutting mana. Pilot skill floor: intermediate.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Early One-Drop Setup
Priority: Medium
Decision families: priority; mana
Cards: Goblin Guide; Monastery Swiftspear; Delver of Secrets; Dragon's Rage Channeler; Gingerbrute; Tin Street Dodger; Esper Sentinel; Mother of Runes
Phase windows: Main phase turns 1-2.
Runtime cues: legal cast action for a one-mana creature.
Use when: multiple early creature or setup actions are legal.
Avoid when: a visible opposing threat requires immediate removal to prevent lethal or lockout.
Instructions: Lead with the threat that attacks soonest, then with Esper Sentinel or Mother of Runes when protection or taxation matters more than damage. Do not hold one-drops for theoretical synergy if the opponent is not presenting a sweeper cue. Pilot skill floor: basic.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Three-Color Mana Discipline
Priority: Medium
Decision families: mana
Cards: Command Tower; Hallowed Fountain; Sacred Foundry; Steam Vents; Adarkar Wastes; Battlefield Forge; Shivan Reef; Mana Confluence; Mystic Monastery; Prairie Stream; Sundown Pass
Phase windows: Land choice, fetch choice, payment choice.
Runtime cues: land play; fetch land activation; pay life for mana.
Use when: more than one land, fetch, or painland payment line is legal.
Avoid when: exact mana is forced by a single legal action.
Instructions: Prioritize untapped red for pressure and burn, white for protection or Path to Exile, and blue for Ponder, Brainstorm, Spell Pierce, Swan Song, and Izzet Charm. Spend life when it preserves tempo; choose tapped lands only when the turn still uses all mana. Pilot skill floor: intermediate.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Selection Before Commitment
Priority: Medium
Decision families: selection; mana
Cards: Ponder; Brainstorm; Magma Jet; Fiery Islet; Sunbaked Canyon
Phase windows: Main phase, upkeep where legal, end step where legal.
Runtime cues: legal cast or activate action for selection.
Use when: card selection can change land drop, threat, protection, or interaction sequencing.
Avoid when: casting selection would forfeit lethal damage, a required counter window, or a mana-efficient threat deployment.
Instructions: Use Ponder before land when land choice matters; use Brainstorm with a shuffle or urgent need for protection. Treat Magma Jet as removal plus scry only when the damage target matters. Pilot skill floor: intermediate.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Commander Or Engine Commitment Gate
Priority: High
Decision families: priority; mana
Cards: Sonic the Hedgehog; Sprite Dragon; Stormchaser Mage; Slickshot Show-Off; Storm Entity; Kaza, Roil Chaser; Akoum Battlesinger; Kolaghan Stormsinger
Phase windows: Main phase before combat, postcombat main phase.
Runtime cues: legal cast action for engine creature or commander.
Use when: committing a payoff creature competes with holding interaction, removal, or protection.
Avoid when: only one harmless mana use is legal and no opponent interaction is visible.
Instructions: Commit the engine when it attacks or triggers before the opponent can stabilize, when protection is available, or when waiting loses tempo. Card text check required for Sonic the Hedgehog before assuming combo output. Pilot skill floor: advanced.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Prowess And Spell-Chain Timing
Priority: Medium
Decision families: priority; combat
Cards: Monastery Swiftspear; Stormchaser Mage; Sprite Dragon; Slickshot Show-Off; Storm Entity; Lightning Bolt; Burst Lightning; Shard Volley; Izzet Charm
Phase windows: Precombat main, declare attackers, postblockers, end step.
Runtime cues: legal instant or sorcery while prowess-style attacker is present.
Use when: a spell can add damage, remove a blocker, or save mana for interaction.
Avoid when: opponent has open mana and the spell is needed after blockers or on stack.
Instructions: Cast sorcery-speed pressure before combat only when it changes attack math; hold instant burn until blockers or end step unless immediate damage enables lethal. Pilot skill floor: intermediate.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Burn As Removal Or Reach
Priority: High
Decision families: interaction; priority
Cards: Lightning Bolt; Burst Lightning; Shard Volley; Arc Trail; Magma Jet; Fanatical Firebrand; Izzet Charm
Phase windows: Combat, opponent main phase, end step, lethal turn.
Runtime cues: legal damage spell or damage ability.
Use when: burn can kill a blocker, stop lethal, answer a commander, or finish the opponent.
Avoid when: target legality or damage prevention is uncertain without reading current stack and board.
Instructions: Aim burn at creatures when it unlocks attacks or prevents a larger life swing; aim burn at the opponent when visible damage plus attacks can close before stabilization. Delay Shard Volley until lethal or land sacrifice is acceptable. Pilot skill floor: advanced.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Exact Opponent Lethal Burn
Priority: High
Decision families: interaction; priority
Cards: Lightning Bolt; Burst Lightning; Shard Volley
Phase windows: Any priority window with legal targeting.
Runtime cues: action:target opponent Lightning Bolt; action:target opponent Burst Lightning; action:target opponent Shard Volley
Use when: the legal action text targets the opponent, the visible opponent life total is less than or equal to the listed damage after required costs, and no prevention or counter effect is on stack.
Avoid when: alternate costs, ward/tax, prevention, or target redirection is visible.
Instructions: Select the opponent-targeting burn action that immediately ends the game. Pilot skill floor: basic.
No-API allowed: yes
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Permission Commitment Gate
Priority: High
Decision families: interaction; priority
Cards: Swan Song; Spell Pierce; Izzet Charm; Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Hydroblast
Phase windows: Opponent spell on stack, counter window.
Runtime cues: legal counter action; stack contains opponent spell.
Use when: a counterspell can stop a sweeper, combo piece, commander, removal on a key threat, or lethal interaction.
Avoid when: the spell is low impact and spending permission opens a stronger visible follow-up.
Instructions: Spend permission on game-swinging stack objects, not generic value spells. Respect payment clauses and current opponent mana. Use Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, or Hydroblast only when target color and sideboard role match legal action text. Pilot skill floor: advanced.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Protection Response Gate
Priority: High
Decision families: interaction; priority
Cards: Gods Willing; Faith's Shield; Brave the Elements; Mother of Runes; Plumecreed Escort; Whitemane Lion; Zephyr Sentinel
Phase windows: Removal on stack, combat damage setup, targeted ability window.
Runtime cues: legal protection, bounce, or save action.
Use when: a key attacker, commander, or engine creature is threatened by visible removal or combat exchange.
Avoid when: protection does not change survival, combat damage, or lethal clock.
Instructions: Protect the creature that preserves the fastest clock or engine, then choose color/protection only from visible threat colors and legal options. Route Whitemane Lion and Zephyr Sentinel target choices through reasoning because tempo loss matters. Pilot skill floor: advanced.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Deterministic Self-Save Target
Priority: Medium
Decision families: interaction
Cards: Gods Willing; Faith's Shield
Phase windows: Target-selection prompt after protection spell is selected.
Runtime cues: action:target self Gods Willing; action:target self Faith's Shield
Use when: exactly one friendly permanent is the legal target named by the pending protection action and that permanent is currently targeted by an opponent spell or ability on stack.
Avoid when: multiple friendly targets are legal or color/protection choice remains unresolved.
Instructions: Choose the visible friendly target already threatened by the stack object. Pilot skill floor: basic.
No-API allowed: yes
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Hate Permanent Commitment
Priority: Medium
Decision families: priority; interaction
Cards: Null Rod; Cursed Totem; Stony Silence; Rest in Peace; Containment Priest; Pithing Needle
Phase windows: Main phase, sideboarded games.
Runtime cues: legal cast action for hate permanent.
Use when: visible opponent permanents, graveyards, commander text, or matchup guidance indicate the hate card constrains the opponent more than this deck.
Avoid when: Null Rod, Cursed Totem, or Stony Silence would shut off a current needed Bomat Courier, Gingerbrute, Rabbit Battery, Reckless Lackey, Mother of Runes, or sideboard line.
Instructions: Deploy hate before pressure only when it blocks a faster opposing plan. Name choices for Pithing Needle require light-model reasoning from visible cards. Pilot skill floor: advanced.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Creature Combat Pressure
Priority: Medium
Decision families: combat
Cards: Goblin Guide; Monastery Swiftspear; Lightning Stormkin; Phoenix Chick; Gingerbrute; Tin Street Dodger; Robber of the Rich; Laelia, the Blade Reforged; Hell's Thunder
Phase windows: Declare attackers and combat tricks.
Runtime cues: legal attack declaration.
Use when: attack options involve evasive, hasty, or scaling threats.
Avoid when: attacking sacrifices a required blocker under a visible short clock.
Instructions: Attack when damage advances the clock and blockers are unfavorable for the opponent. Hold back only when the creature is needed to survive the next attack or protect planes of interaction. Pilot skill floor: intermediate.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Single Forced Attack
Priority: Low
Decision families: combat
Cards: none
Phase windows: Declare attackers.
Runtime cues: action:attack
Use when: exactly one legal attack action exists, it attacks with one creature, and no legal instant-speed spell or ability is available before attackers.
Avoid when: multiple attack groups, exert/enlist/tap choices, or combat tricks are legal.
Instructions: Submit the only attack action. Pilot skill floor: basic.
No-API allowed: yes
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Defensive Blocks Under Pressure
Priority: High
Decision families: combat; interaction
Cards: Deceiver Exarch; Whitemane Lion; Zephyr Sentinel; Threnody Singer; Plumecreed Escort; Mother of Runes
Phase windows: Declare blockers, before combat damage.
Runtime cues: legal block declaration; opponent attackers visible.
Use when: visible attacks threaten lethal, commander damage pressure, or a race reversal.
Avoid when: taking damage preserves a lethal crackback and life total remains above the visible next-turn burn or attack range.
Instructions: Block to survive first, then to preserve the most important threat. Consider flash creatures or protection only when legal actions show they can change combat. Card text check required for Threnody Singer before assuming combat modification. Pilot skill floor: advanced.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Sideboard Role Selection
Priority: Medium
Decision families: sideboard
Cards: Pyroblast; Red Elemental Blast; Hydroblast; Wear // Tear; Rest in Peace; Stony Silence; Containment Priest; Swords to Plowshares; Abrade; Pithing Needle
Phase windows: Between games sideboard step.
Runtime cues: sideboard prompt; matchup label; previous-game public log.
Use when: Veles asks for a sideboard plan or generated swaps.
Avoid when: no sideboard action is legal.
Instructions: Add color blasts against matching blue or red decks, artifact/enchantment answers against visible targets, graveyard hate against graveyard engines, Containment Priest against cheat or blink lines, Swords to Plowshares against creature-commanders, and Pithing Needle for known activated threats. Pilot skill floor: advanced.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Sideboarded Removal Priority
Priority: Medium
Decision families: interaction; priority
Cards: Swords to Plowshares; Abrade; Wear // Tear; Path to Exile; Cathar Commando
Phase windows: Opponent main phase, combat, end step.
Runtime cues: legal removal action for creature, artifact, or enchantment.
Use when: sideboarded answer can remove a permanent that blocks pressure, enables combo, or threatens lethal.
Avoid when: the target is low impact and a more dangerous permanent is visible or expected from public information.
Instructions: Prefer exile removal for creatures that must not return, Abrade for artifacts or small creatures, and Wear // Tear or Cathar Commando for artifacts/enchantments. Confirm split-card mode from legal action text. Pilot skill floor: intermediate.
No-API allowed: no
Light-model allowed: yes
### Policy: Exact Artifact Or Enchantment Target
Priority: Low
Decision families: interaction
Cards: Wear // Tear; Abrade; Cathar Commando
Phase windows: Target-selection prompt after the answer is selected.
Runtime cues: action:target Wear // Tear; action:target Abrade; action:target Cathar Commando
Use when: exactly one opposing artifact or enchantment is a legal target for the pending selected spell or ability and no modal choice remains.
Avoid when: multiple targets, fused modes, damage modes, or sacrifice timing choices are legal.
Instructions: Choose the only opposing artifact or enchantment target named by the legal action text. Pilot skill floor: basic.
