Gretchen pEDH is a Pauper Commander strategy built around commander access to Gretchen Titchwillow, with a 100-card singleton main deck and a 10-card Veles sideboard. Format-aware validation passes under the supplied contract: the main deck is exactly 100 cards, the sideboard is exactly 10 cards, and all nonbasic, nonland, and non-basic-land entries are singleton. Basic land repetition is intentional and legal here, with 13 Forest and 17 Island supporting a blue-green base.
- Identity: Pilot the deck as a Simic combo-control list whose commander converts excess mana into cards and land deployment pressure, while the maindeck assembles enchanted-land mana engines, untap effects, protection, and deterministic or semi-deterministic payoff routes.
- Tags: Use `combo`, `control`, and `tribal` as current metadata tags, but treat `combo` and `control` as the live tactical roles; the `tribal` tag is secondary unless visible legal actions from Vedalken Aethermage, Step Through, or other revealed cards make creature-type selection relevant.
- Stock status: Treat this as a rogue or hybrid pEDH build rather than a stock archetype. Do not assume common cEDH, Pauper, or Commander staples are present unless named in the registered list; Arcane Signet is present, but cards such as Sol Ring, Lightning Greaves, Expedition Map, or Swiftfoot Boots are absent and must not be inferred.
- Control shell: The interactive package is real but narrow, so decisions must be tied to visible threats and stack context. Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Miscalculation, Negate, Spell Pierce, Daze, Foil, Dispel, Turn Aside, Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, Imprisoned in the Moon, and Emerald Charm should be treated as limited defensive resources, not generic permission abundance.
- Mana concern: The mana base is mostly Forest and Island plus Command Tower, Opal Palace, Simic Growth Chamber, Mystic Sanctuary, and Darksteel Citadel, so blue-green development is strong but color sequencing still matters. Runtime pilots must check whether Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Urban Utopia, Careful Cultivation, and other aura mana pieces have legal targets before assuming ramp lines are available.
- Role concern: The deck can play control, but it is not a pure draw-go deck; it must eventually commit a mana engine, a commander draw loop, Viridian Longbow pressure, Wildheart Invoker mana conversion, or a large untap chain. Avoid spending early selection only to find generic interaction when the visible hand lacks an engine or mana multiplier.
- Legality concern: All strategic instructions are subordinate to Veles legal actions and Forge-visible rules output. Do not assume that an untap line, aura target, High Tide turn, transmute line, or infinite-mana pattern is legal unless the runtime action list exposes the necessary cast, activate, target, payment, and resolution choices.
- Card-text uncertainty: Card text check required for uncommon or highly context-sensitive lines involving Evanescent Intellect, Sheltered Aerie, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, Oboro Breezecaller, and any pEDH-specific commander legality edge case. Use these cards only through legal action text and visible board facts until their exact Oracle text is confirmed.
- Sideboard status: The registered sideboard is Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Annul, Return to Nature, Weather the Storm, Scattershot Archer, Spore Frog, Relic of Progenitus, Gleeful Sabotage, and Serene Heart. Sideboard plans must use only these names for cards brought in and only registered main-deck names for cards removed.
- Opponent info status: No specific opposing decklist, commander, colors, or metagame sample is supplied for this guide. Matchup rules must therefore be archetype-facing and visible-state-driven, with any opponent-only card examples kept outside policy `Cards:` fields or prefixed as `opponent:` when policy syntax later requires examples.
Gretchen pEDH assembles a blue-green mana engine first, then converts untaps and enchanted lands into commander draw, repeated action, and a compact payoff finish. The deck wants an early land-aura or mana-rock foundation, a permanent untapper such as Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Krosan Restorer, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Galvanic Alchemist, or Pili-Pala, and enough protection or stack discipline to force the engine through visible interaction.
The primary win pattern is to make one land or creature produce more mana than the untap cost, repeat that loop when legal, then spend the resulting mana on Gretchen Titchwillow, Wildheart Invoker, Viridian Longbow, or overwhelming spell velocity. Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Dramatic Reversal, Vitalize, Hidden Strings, Dream's Grip, Twiddle, Tidal Bore, Cerulean Wisps, Cloud of Faeries, Frantic Search, and Peregrine Drake are not interchangeable cantrips; treat them as engine pieces whose value depends on what they untap, how much mana the targets produce, and whether the next legal prompt can continue the chain.
The deck is not trying to win by normal creature combat unless the board already makes that plan safer than committing a combo piece. Llanowar Visionary, Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, Drift of Phantasms, Vedalken Aethermage, Oboro Breezecaller, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Krosan Restorer, and Wildheart Invoker can block or pressure, but combat is usually a stabilizing bridge to mana dominance rather than the central plan.
Prioritize mana quality, protected engine setup, and card selection over low-impact interaction when the visible hand lacks a path to excess mana. Preserve Counterspell, Negate, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Miscalculation, Arcane Denial, Daze, Foil, Turn Aside, and Tamiyo's Safekeeping for threats that stop the engine, remove the commander at a decisive point, or end the game before the combo can be assembled.
- Threats: Gretchen Titchwillow is the default long-game threat because commander access turns spare mana into cards and land deployment pressure; protect Gretchen when the hand can immediately use the activated ability or when recasting through commander tax would break the next turn. Wildheart Invoker is the clean mana-sink finisher when excess mana is visible, while Viridian Longbow turns repeated untaps into damage if a legal equip and untap loop is exposed.
- Payoffs: Use Gretchen Titchwillow, Wildheart Invoker, Viridian Longbow, Evanescent Intellect, and large chained draw-selection turns as the payoff module. Card text check required for Evanescent Intellect; use it only when legal action text confirms the activation, target, and milling line is relevant.
- Engines: Build around enchanted mana sources plus untappers. Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, Urban Utopia, and Careful Cultivation increase mana density; Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Krosan Restorer, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Galvanic Alchemist, Pili-Pala, Oboro Breezecaller, Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, Dramatic Reversal, Vitalize, Hidden Strings, Dream's Grip, Twiddle, Tidal Bore, Cerulean Wisps, Emerald Charm, and Frantic Search convert that density into tempo or combo turns. Card text check required for Sheltered Aerie, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, and Oboro Breezecaller before assuming a specific loop.
- Velocity: Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Deep Analysis, Lórien Revealed, Tolarian Winds, Frantic Search, Merchant Scroll, Drift of Phantasms, Step Through, Vedalken Aethermage, and Crop Rotation find lands, untappers, interaction, or payoff access. Use tutor and transmute-style actions only from visible legal options; do not assume the library contains a reachable target unless the rules engine presents it.
- Interaction: Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Miscalculation, Negate, Spell Pierce, Daze, Foil, Dispel, Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, Imprisoned in the Moon, and Emerald Charm form the control package. Spend bounce or removal on commanders, hate permanents, lethal attackers, or blockers that prevent a deterministic finish; avoid trading interaction for low-pressure permanents while the engine is incomplete.
- Protection: Turn Aside, Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Dispel, Daze, Foil, Spell Pierce, Negate, Counterspell, and Arcane Denial defend engine commitments. Hold protection when passing with a fragile enchanted land, Freed from the Real target, Viridian Longbow carrier, or commander activation turn matters more than using all mana.
- Recursion: Mystic Sanctuary is the explicit recursion card and should be sequenced to rebuy decisive instants or sorceries when its legal entry condition is satisfied. Deep Analysis also supplies graveyard card advantage if legal flashback-style actions appear; do not assume graveyard access before Veles exposes it.
- Mana: Command Tower, Opal Palace, Simic Growth Chamber, Mystic Sanctuary, Darksteel Citadel, Forest, Island, Arcane Signet, High Tide, Crop Rotation, and the aura package define the mana plan. Prefer early development that creates a high-output untap target over scattered mana that cannot be multiplied.
- Sideboard modules: Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast answer red pressure or red interaction; Annul, Return to Nature, Gleeful Sabotage, and Serene Heart fight artifacts and enchantments; Weather the Storm and Spore Frog buy time against damage races; Scattershot Archer pressures small flyers; Relic of Progenitus contests graveyards. Bring these in only through explicit sideboard plans and visible matchup needs.
- Mana-loop finish: Prioritize an enchanted high-output land plus a repeatable untapper when the hand or battlefield contains Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, or Urban Utopia alongside Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Krosan Restorer, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Galvanic Alchemist, Pili-Pala, or Freed from the Real. Execute only from legal actions that show the relevant untap and mana choices; protect the commitment with Counterspell, Negate, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Miscalculation, Daze, Foil, Turn Aside, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping when visible opposing mana or stack pressure can break the loop.
- Commander-conversion finish: Use Gretchen Titchwillow as the primary excess-mana outlet once a loop or large burst turn is online. Convert surplus mana into repeated draw and land deployment when legal, then keep digging until Wildheart Invoker, Viridian Longbow, Evanescent Intellect, additional untap effects, or enough protection appears. Prioritize this path in slower games, after removal has been taxed, or when Gretchen is already present and commander tax will not punish a failed attempt.
- Wildheart Invoker finish: Treat Wildheart Invoker as the clean creature-combat payoff when the board can generate very large mana and a legal activation is shown. Use it over slower card-draw chaining when opponents are low enough, blockers are manageable, or the deck needs to end before graveyard hate, artifact hate, enchantment hate, or commander removal catches up. Do not attack into obvious lethal crackback unless the activation produces a decisive race swing.
- Viridian Longbow finish: Assemble Viridian Longbow with a creature that can repeatedly untap only when legal equip, tap, and untap actions are visible. Pili-Pala, Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Krosan Restorer, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Cerulean Wisps, Vitalize, Dramatic Reversal, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Hidden Strings, Cloud of Faeries, Frantic Search, or Peregrine Drake can contribute, but verify the exact target and mana-positive sequence through Veles prompts. Prioritize this path through stalled combat or against life totals that make one large Wildheart Invoker attack unreliable.
- High Tide burst finish: Use High Tide with Island-heavy battlefields, Cloud of Faeries, Frantic Search, Peregrine Drake, Snap, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Hidden Strings, Cerulean Wisps, and Gretchen Titchwillow to create a single decisive turn. Prioritize this when multiple Islands are visible, the hand has card flow, and interaction can protect the first important spell; avoid firing High Tide as a small ritual unless it unlocks a protected commander activation, a lethal payoff, or survival interaction.
- Value-control fallback: Win by commander advantage when the table prevents deterministic loops. Cast Gretchen Titchwillow when the next turns can use the activated ability, then use Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Deep Analysis, Lórien Revealed, Tolarian Winds, Merchant Scroll, Drift of Phantasms, Step Through, Vedalken Aethermage, and Crop Rotation to find lands, untappers, protection, or payoffs. Preserve Mystic Sanctuary for a decisive instant or sorcery only when its legal entry condition and target are shown.
- Tempo pressure fallback: Use Cloud of Faeries, Llanowar Visionary, Drift of Phantasms, Vedalken Aethermage, Peregrine Drake, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Oboro Breezecaller, Pili-Pala, and Wildheart Invoker as pressure only when attacking does not expose an essential engine piece. Combat is a bridge to mana dominance, not the default plan; trade creatures mainly to preserve life, commander access, or time for a protected engine turn.
- Permanent-answer fallback: Use Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, Imprisoned in the Moon, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Miscalculation, Negate, Spell Pierce, Daze, Foil, Dispel, Turn Aside, and Tamiyo's Safekeeping to keep opponents from establishing a faster lock or lethal board. Spend answers on cards that stop mana auras, kill the untapper, disable Gretchen Titchwillow, remove Viridian Longbow, or end the game before the next setup turn.
- Evanescent Intellect fallback: Card text check required for Evanescent Intellect. Use it only when the rules engine exposes legal action text that confirms the activation, target, and win relevance; do not assume it mills, enchants a specific type, or creates a deterministic kill unless Veles shows those actions.
- Behind on life: Shift from combo greed to survival. Block with expendable creatures, spend Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, or Imprisoned in the Moon on the highest visible damage source, and keep Weather the Storm or Spore Frog plans for sideboarded games where they are registered post-board and legally available.
- Behind on board: Stabilize before committing fragile auras to a land that can be answered at high tempo cost. Use Drift of Phantasms, Llanowar Visionary, Peregrine Drake, or spare utility creatures as blockers, then rebuild around the first protected mana-positive untap sequence.
- Behind on cards: Prioritize Gretchen Titchwillow activation, Deep Analysis, Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Lórien Revealed, Tolarian Winds, and Frantic Search over speculative attacks. Do not discard protection or a unique payoff unless the legal selection choice is necessary to hit land, survive, or assemble a known line.
- Behind on mana: Sequence land drops, Arcane Signet, land auras, Careful Cultivation, High Tide, and untap effects toward one multiplied source instead of spreading low-output mana. Protect Simic Growth Chamber and enchanted Forest or Island lines from avoidable tempo loss.
- Removed win condition: If Wildheart Invoker or Viridian Longbow is gone, pivot to Gretchen Titchwillow card advantage and engine recursion through Mystic Sanctuary where legal. If Gretchen is taxed out, prioritize low-cost selection and interaction until a burst turn can pay commander tax and still continue.
- Life: Treat life as the buffer that buys one more protected engine turn. Take small damage to preserve Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Krosan Restorer, Pili-Pala, Oboro Breezecaller, Gretchen Titchwillow, or a protected enchanted land, but block or answer pressure once the visible clock can beat a setup-plus-combo turn.
- Hand: Convert cards into either mana multiplication, untap density, protection, or a payoff. Keep Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Lórien Revealed, Deep Analysis, Frantic Search, Tolarian Winds, Merchant Scroll, Step Through, Drift of Phantasms, and Vedalken Aethermage pointed at the missing category rather than generic card volume.
- Mana: Treat one overproducing land as the central resource when it is enchanted by Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, Urban Utopia, or Careful Cultivation. The deck wins when untap effects convert that permanent into repeated net mana, then Gretchen Titchwillow turns surplus mana into cards and extra lands.
- Board: Protect the battlefield pieces that convert mana, not every creature. Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Galvanic Alchemist, Dramatic Reversal, Vitalize, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Hidden Strings, Frantic Search, and Snap are strongest when they untap a multiplied source or reset enough Islands after High Tide.
- Graveyard: Use the graveyard as a delayed resource for Deep Analysis and Mystic Sanctuary only when legal actions expose that line. Do not assume recursion beyond what the rules engine shows, and value graveyard cards mainly as known resources for future selection or Sanctuary targets.
- Exile: Track exile as mostly lost material unless Veles shows a legal play permission or replacement effect. If a payoff such as Wildheart Invoker, Viridian Longbow, or Freed from the Real is exiled, shift toward Gretchen Titchwillow value and remaining mana-loop routes.
- Lands: Value lands above normal because Gretchen Titchwillow can put extras onto the battlefield and Crop Rotation can convert one land into a specific visible utility land. Treat Simic Growth Chamber as tempo-sensitive: it can increase land count and replay value, but bouncing the wrong land can delay protection or colors.
- Sacrifice fodder: Treat sacrifice costs as scarce, not incidental. Crop Rotation spends a land, and post-board Spore Frog may spend itself only when a legal action confirms the prevention line; do not sacrifice a key enchanted land, Mystic Sanctuary, Simic Growth Chamber, or the only source of a color without a clear payoff.
- Tempo and information: Spend tempo on selection when not under lethal pressure, and spend interaction when the opponent threatens the engine, commander access, or a faster kill. Use known public information and revealed cards only; never infer hidden removal or countermagic certainty beyond visible mana, prior actions, and matchup context.
- Sideboard bullets: Treat Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Annul, Return to Nature, Weather the Storm, Scattershot Archer, Spore Frog, Relic of Progenitus, Gleeful Sabotage, and Serene Heart as narrow resources that must answer the matchup problem they were registered for. Do not deploy a bullet early if holding it preserves the combo turn or survival window.
- Color base: Prioritize early green for Arbor Elf, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, land auras, and Gretchen Titchwillow access, while maintaining blue for Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Miscalculation, High Tide, and untap spells. Keep hands that produce both colors or have credible selection into the missing color.
- Keep rules: Keep two-to-four land hands with at least one green source, one blue source or blue selection, and either acceleration, card selection, or protection. Mulligan one-land hands unless the land plus Ponder, Brainstorm, or another legal draw path makes the second land highly likely; mulligan colorless-heavy hands with only Darksteel Citadel, Opal Palace, or Arcane Signet if they cannot cast early setup.
- Land sequencing: Lead with untapped colored lands before utility lands when early spells matter. Use Command Tower as the cleanest color fixer, play basic Forest before Arbor Elf or land-aura starts, play Island-heavy sequences when High Tide or blue interaction is central, and delay Simic Growth Chamber until bouncing a land does not strand Counterspell, Dispel, Spell Pierce, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping.
- Aura placement: Put Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, Urban Utopia, or Careful Cultivation on lands that maximize legal untap text and minimize blowout risk. Prefer a Forest for Arbor Elf lines, prefer Islands when High Tide and blue untaps are the turn plan, and avoid stacking everything onto a land exposed to visible land bounce or destruction unless the commitment turn is now.
- Utility lands: Treat Mystic Sanctuary as a spell-regrowth land only when Veles shows its entry condition and target; otherwise it is a tapped blue source with opportunity cost. Treat Opal Palace as fixing and commander support only when colored requirements are already stable, and treat Darksteel Citadel as a durable but colorless source that should not block early color development.
- Play land before or after draw: Play a land before draw when it is needed to cast Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Merchant Scroll, Counterspell, or a protection spell this turn. Draw or select before the land drop when Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Lórien Revealed, Gretchen Titchwillow, Frantic Search, or Tolarian Winds can materially change whether the correct land is Forest, Island, Simic Growth Chamber, Mystic Sanctuary, or a utility source.
- Payment discipline: Spend generic mana from Arcane Signet, Darksteel Citadel, or excess enchanted-land output before consuming the only colored source needed for protection. Hold blue open when passing with Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Miscalculation, Daze, Foil, Turn Aside, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping matters more than one extra setup permanent.
- Strong keep: Keep Forest, Island, Wild Growth, Ponder, Counterspell, Voyaging Satyr, and Gretchen Titchwillow because it has both colors, turn-one selection or acceleration, a land worth untapping, commander access, and interaction. Lead green acceleration unless visible pressure or open mana makes holding Counterspell more valuable.
- Strong keep: Keep Command Tower, Forest, Utopia Sprawl, Arbor Elf, Impulse, Freed from the Real, and Tamiyo's Safekeeping because it presents the deck's clean setup pattern: accelerated enchanted land, untapper, payoff aura, and protection. Do not commit Freed from the Real until Veles shows the target is legal and the board state supports a combo attempt.
- Medium keep: Keep three lands, Arcane Signet, Gretchen Titchwillow, Deep Analysis, and Echoing Truth when the lands produce both colors. This hand is slower but functional, and it can play commander value while saving Echoing Truth for a tempo reset or emergency answer.
- Medium keep: Keep Island, Forest, Simic Growth Chamber, Brainstorm, Fertile Ground, Merchant Scroll, and Miscalculation if the first two lands cast the early spells. Delay Simic Growth Chamber unless bouncing a land preserves blue interaction or enables a future Gretchen Titchwillow activation.
- Risky keep: Keep one land only when it is an untapped blue or green source with Ponder, Brainstorm, or Impulse and at least one cheap follow-up if the second land appears. Ship one-land hands with no selection, and ship hands where the only land is Darksteel Citadel or Opal Palace.
- Automatic ship: Mulligan hands with no lands, hands with only colorless mana and no immediate Arcane Signet line, hands with five or more expensive setup cards and no early colored mana, and hands that contain payoff pieces such as Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, or Peregrine Drake without mana development or selection.
- Matchup-dependent keep: Keep interaction-heavy hands with Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Daze, Foil, or Turn Aside against fast combo or removal-heavy opponents if the mana casts them on time. Against creature pressure, require a path to mana, Gretchen Titchwillow, Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, Imprisoned in the Moon, or a credible blocker.
- Play/draw adjustment: On the play, prefer acceleration hands with Arbor Elf, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Fertile Ground, or Arcane Signet because early tempo compounds into commander activations. On the draw, accept slightly more reactive hands if they have both colors and card selection, but do not keep a hand that only answers spells while failing to build mana.
- Trap hand: Do not keep High Tide, Cloud of Faeries, Frantic Search, Peregrine Drake, Hidden Strings, and two non-Island lands as a fake combo hand. High Tide hands need enough Islands, legal untap sequencing, and a card-flow plan before they are real.
- Trap hand: Do not keep Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, and lands without a mana creature, enchanted land, or selection. The deck wins by assembling mana plus untap infrastructure, not by holding isolated payoffs.
- Turn 1: Prefer untapped Forest into Arbor Elf, Wild Growth, or Utopia Sprawl when available, because these starts create the highest future mana. Prefer Island into Ponder or Brainstorm when the hand needs a land, a color, or a missing engine category; avoid Brainstorm before a shuffle or selection reason unless the hand is otherwise stranded.
- Turn 1 deviation: Play Command Tower when it is the only clean color fixer. Play Mystic Sanctuary as a tapped land only when no early spell is being lost, and avoid Darksteel Citadel starts unless the hand already has Arcane Signet or colored lands queued.
- Turn 2: Cast Gretchen Titchwillow when colors are stable and the opponent is not presenting a must-answer threat. Otherwise develop Fertile Ground, Urban Utopia, Careful Cultivation, Arcane Signet, Voyaging Satyr, Llanowar Visionary if legal, or hold Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Miscalculation, Spell Pierce, Dispel, Daze, Turn Aside, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping when protecting the engine matters.
- Turn 2 deviation: Use Impulse, Merchant Scroll, Step Through, Vedalken Aethermage, or Drift of Phantasms only when Veles shows the legal selection mode and the hand lacks a required category. Search for the missing category rather than for generic card advantage.
- Turn 3: Build one overproducing permanent plus one untap path before committing payoff pieces. Strong lines include enchanted Forest with Arbor Elf, enchanted land with Voyaging Satyr, or High Tide setup with multiple Islands and blue untap spells; hold Freed from the Real or Galvanic Alchemist until the target and protection window are acceptable.
- Turn 3 deviation: Spend Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, Imprisoned in the Moon, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, or Dispel over setup when the visible threat attacks the commander, the multiplied land, or the next-turn combo window. Do not tap out for Dawn's Reflection, Overgrowth, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, or Nature's Embrace if losing the land would collapse the game and waiting preserves interaction.
- Turns 4-5: Attempt a commitment turn only when mana, untappers, payoff, and protection line up through legal actions. Convert extra mana through Gretchen Titchwillow, Frantic Search, Deep Analysis, Lórien Revealed, Tolarian Winds, Impulse, or Ponder when the combo is incomplete; move toward Wildheart Invoker, Viridian Longbow, or repeated commander value when the opponent has disrupted the primary loop.
- Turns 4-5 deviation: Use Crop Rotation cautiously because it sacrifices a land. Take the line only when the resulting land materially improves mana, Mystic Sanctuary access, Simic Growth Chamber sequencing, or survival, and never sacrifice the key enchanted land unless the legal payoff is immediate.
- Late game: Prioritize protected engine turns over low-impact spending. Rebuild around Gretchen Titchwillow activations, Mystic Sanctuary targets when legal, Deep Analysis from graveyard when legal, and remaining untap packages; hold countermagic for disruption that stops the active engine or wins the game for the opponent.
- Late-game finish: Use Wildheart Invoker, Viridian Longbow, Evanescent Intellect, or large combat only when Veles shows legal actions and the mana engine can support the line. If the board is hostile, stabilize first with Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, Imprisoned in the Moon, blockers, or countermagic before spending mana on a slow kill.
- Commander role: Gretchen Titchwillow is the default mana sink, stabilizer, and combo-bridge card, not a card to expose casually into open removal. Cast Gretchen Titchwillow when the hand can keep making land drops or hold protection, then use activations to convert excess mana into cards and lands until a deterministic untap payoff is available.
- Enchanted-land package: Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, Urban Utopia, and Careful Cultivation turn a single land into the deck's main engine. Prefer enchanting Forest when Arbor Elf is available, prefer stable untapper targets when Voyaging Satyr or Stone-Seeder Hierophant is available, and avoid stacking multiple auras onto one land when the opponent has visible land interaction unless that land immediately enables a protected combo turn. Card text check required for the exact mana and secondary clauses on Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, and Careful Cultivation before treating them as interchangeable.
- Creature untappers: Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Galvanic Alchemist, and Oboro Breezecaller are engine pieces before they are attackers. Protect the untapper that pairs with the largest enchanted land, and do not deploy Galvanic Alchemist or Freed from the Real into removal unless the target can generate immediate repeated mana or the protection window is covered.
- Spell untappers: Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Cerulean Wisps, Vitalize, Dramatic Reversal, Hidden Strings, Snap, Frantic Search, Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, High Tide, and Vizier of Tumbling Sands create the burst turns. Use them after tapping the relevant permanent or lands, count floating mana before each cast, and prefer lines that leave blue mana for Counterspell, Dispel, Turn Aside, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping when the engine is fragile. Card text check required for modal or targeting details on Dream's Grip, Emerald Charm, and Hidden Strings before using no-API automation.
- Infinite or near-infinite commitments: Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Pili-Pala, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, Evanescent Intellect, and Gretchen Titchwillow are payoff or conversion pieces, not early setup by themselves. Treat Freed from the Real plus a mana-positive creature or land-untapper as a go-now gate; treat Viridian Longbow as a kill piece only when Veles shows legal equip or activation lines and enough untaps; treat Wildheart Invoker as the cleanest mana-to-lethal combat outlet when the board can attack or survive the turn. Card text check required for Evanescent Intellect before relying on it as a deterministic library kill.
- Card selection: Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Frantic Search, Tolarian Winds, Lórien Revealed, Deep Analysis, Llanowar Visionary, and Gretchen Titchwillow find the missing category rather than generic value. Use Ponder and Impulse to locate lands, protection, an aura, or an untapper; save Brainstorm for shuffle or known-card improvement when possible; use Tolarian Winds only when the hand is stalled or overloaded with redundant pieces; use Deep Analysis when life and tempo allow. Card text check required for Lórien Revealed if cycling, islandcycling, or spell mode matters to the runtime line.
- Tutor and transmute package: Merchant Scroll, Drift of Phantasms, Step Through, Vedalken Aethermage, and Crop Rotation are category tutors. Merchant Scroll should usually find the exact instant needed for the current gate, such as Counterspell, Dispel, Snap, Frantic Search, High Tide, Impulse, or Echoing Truth if legal. Drift of Phantasms, Step Through, and Vedalken Aethermage require card text checks before locking target classes; use them to complete the engine only when Veles exposes a legal search action. Crop Rotation is a high-risk land sacrifice that should get Mystic Sanctuary, Simic Growth Chamber, Command Tower, or a required basic only when the resulting land changes the turn.
- Protection suite: Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Miscalculation, Daze, Foil, Turn Aside, and Tamiyo's Safekeeping defend the engine, commander, and commitment turn. Spend narrow counters first when the target matches, preserve hard counters for removal or stack interaction that stops the combo, and do not pitch cards to Foil unless the protected line is worth the card loss. Daze and Spell Pierce are strongest before opponents have excess mana; they become trap holds if the deck needs proactive development.
- Removal and bounce: Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, and Imprisoned in the Moon buy time, remove blockers, answer hate pieces, or protect a combo turn by clearing one obstacle. Snap is especially valuable when it untaps lands and preserves tempo; Echoing Truth should be held for tokens, stacked problem permanents, or emergency commander protection if legal; Resculpt and Imprisoned in the Moon should answer permanents that stop the engine or threaten a fast kill, not low-impact creatures.
- Mana artifacts and fixer lands: Arcane Signet, Command Tower, Opal Palace, Simic Growth Chamber, Darksteel Citadel, Mystic Sanctuary, Island, and Forest define whether a hand functions. Arcane Signet fixes early turns but is not an untap engine by itself; Simic Growth Chamber supports land-drop value but can punish loose sequencing; Mystic Sanctuary is a late-game spell recovery tool when its condition is legal; Darksteel Citadel is mostly colorless and should not be treated as a keep enabler without other colored sources.
- Combat bodies: Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, Llanowar Visionary, Drift of Phantasms, Wildheart Invoker, Krosan Restorer, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Arbor Elf, Pili-Pala, and Gretchen Titchwillow block only when survival or commander safety outweighs engine utility. Avoid trading an untapper for damage prevention unless the clock demands it; use Drift of Phantasms as a defensive body when its tutor role is unnecessary or unavailable.
- Mistake avoidance: Do not cast payoff-only cards before the mana engine exists, do not tap the last blue source before a protected commitment, and do not over-enchant a land when the visible opponent plan can punish a single permanent. Do not spend selection on attractive value cards when the missing category is mana, untap, protection, or a win outlet. Do not assume any loop is legal until Veles shows the exact activation, target, and payment actions.
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, commander and core mana-conversion piece.
- Role type: engine payoff; card selection; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Converts excess `{2}{G}{U}` activations into cards and extra land deployment after Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, Urban Utopia, High Tide, Peregrine Drake, or Cloud of Faeries has created surplus mana.
- Timing: Cast early when colors are stable and recast tax is acceptable; activate mostly on the opponent's end step unless putting a land from hand onto the battlefield changes the current turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes four mana including green and blue; outputs one card and optional land-to-battlefield deployment from hand.
- Partners / packages: Best with Simic Growth Chamber, Mystic Sanctuary, Forest, Island, Command Tower, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, High Tide, Frantic Search, Peregrine Drake, and Crop Rotation.
- Role peers: No direct peer; closest role overlap is Deep Analysis for raw cards, Lórien Revealed for draw-three, and Wildheart Invoker as a mana sink.
- Failure modes: Activating into open pressure can consume Counterspell, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Negate, Turn Aside, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping mana; recasting through commander tax can strand the deck if Gretchen dies before producing cards.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, Gretchen is a repeatable threat if protected; against aggro, her 0/4 body blocks small attackers but should not trade away commander access unless survival requires it.
#### Echoing Truth
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flexible instant-speed tempo answer.
- Role type: interaction-removal; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Returns target nonland permanent and every other permanent with the same name to owners' hands, buying a combo turn against hate permanents, tokens with shared names, blockers, or a resolved threat that outpaces Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Timing: Hold until the latest safe window unless a permanent is already stopping Freed from the Real, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, Gretchen Titchwillow, or an enchanted-land engine from functioning.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes `{1}{U}` and a card; outputs temporary removal and can create large tempo when multiple same-name objects are visible.
- Partners / packages: Merchant Scroll can find Echoing Truth because it is a blue instant; Mystic Sanctuary can put it back on top if Mystic Sanctuary enters untapped and targets it in the graveyard.
- Role peers: Closest role overlap is Snap for creature bounce, Resculpt for artifact or creature exile, and Imprisoned in the Moon for durable neutralization.
- Failure modes: Does not hit lands; bouncing a commander or low-mana permanent may only delay it; bouncing your own permanent for protection costs tempo and should require a clear reason.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against token swarms, duplicated permanents, Aura targets after Auras fall off through rules, and hate pieces that must leave for one decisive turn.
#### Dawn's Reflection
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, high-output land Aura and core mana engine piece.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a land so whenever that land is tapped for mana, its controller adds an additional two mana in any combination of colors, turning untap effects into large mana jumps.
- Timing: Commit when the enchanted land is likely to survive or the turn can immediately use Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Frantic Search, Peregrine Drake, or Hidden Strings.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{3}{G}` and a land target; outputs two additional mana whenever that land is tapped for mana.
- Partners / packages: Strongest on Forest with Arbor Elf; strong on any stable land with Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, and Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Role peers: Market Festival is the closest peer; Overgrowth adds `{G}{G}` only, while Sheltered Aerie and Grafted Growth replace the land's tap ability with two mana of one color.
- Failure modes: Stacking it onto one land invites tempo loss from bounce or land removal; Serene Heart from the sideboard destroys it along with opposing Auras.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against removal-heavy or tempo opponents, wait until protection from Counterspell, Dispel, Negate, Spell Pierce, Turn Aside, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping can cover the key turn.
#### Overgrowth
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, high-output green land Aura and core mana engine piece.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a land so it adds an additional `{G}{G}` whenever tapped for mana, making green-heavy loops with Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, and Stone-Seeder Hierophant profitable.
- Timing: Best before a turn that can untap the enchanted land more than once; avoid casting it as a naked three-mana Aura if the opponent can punish the target before you use it.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{G}`; outputs two extra green mana per tap of the enchanted land.
- Partners / packages: Pairs with Arbor Elf on Forest, Voyaging Satyr on any land, Krosan Restorer on any land, Stone-Seeder Hierophant with land entries from Gretchen Titchwillow, and Wildheart Invoker as a green-compatible mana sink.
- Role peers: Dawn's Reflection and Market Festival produce more flexible colors; Fertile Ground, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Glittering Frost, and Blighted Burgeoning are cheaper or lower-output alternatives.
- Failure modes: Produces only green bonus mana, so it may fail to support Counterspell, Freed from the Real, or Gretchen Titchwillow unless the base land or other sources provide blue.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against slower decks that cannot answer the enchanted land; weaker against bounce-heavy tempo when losing the enchanted land collapses the next turn.
#### Step Through
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, Wizard tutor with expensive creature-bounce fallback.
- Role type: tutor/search; modal utility; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Usually Wizardcycles for engine creatures rather than casting the five-mana sorcery; the cast side can return two target creatures to owners' hands when two legal creature targets matter.
- Timing: Wizardcycle when the missing piece is a Wizard and spending `{2}` now is better than preserving a bounce spell; hard-cast only when two creature bounces are worth a full main-phase turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Wizardcycling consumes `{2}` and discards Step Through to search for a Wizard card, reveal it, put it into hand, then shuffle; hard-cast consumes `{3}{U}{U}` and returns two target creatures.
- Mode map: Wizardcycling finds Galvanic Alchemist, Vedalken Aethermage, Oboro Breezecaller, or Drift of Phantasms; sorcery mode bounces exactly two target creatures and is not instant-speed protection.
- Partners / packages: Finds Galvanic Alchemist for Soulbond untap lines, Oboro Breezecaller for land-return untaps, Vedalken Aethermage as another Wizardcycler, or Drift of Phantasms for defense/transmute access.
- Role peers: Vedalken Aethermage is the closest Wizard search peer; Drift of Phantasms tutors by mana value instead of creature type.
- Failure modes: Hard-cast requires two target creatures; Wizardcycling does not draw a card and cannot find non-Wizards such as Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Pili-Pala, Wildheart Invoker, or Viridian Longbow.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Better versus control as uncounterable-looking activated search if legal; better versus creature decks only when the two-creature sorcery bounce changes the race.
#### Vizier of Tumbling Sands
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, untapper creature and cycling burst piece.
- Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Untaps another target permanent with its tap ability, or cycles for `{1}{U}` to draw a card and untap target permanent from the cycling trigger.
- Timing: Cast when the body can survive to untap an enchanted land; cycle during a combo turn when immediate untap plus a card is better than waiting a full turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Cast side costs `{2}{U}` and later taps to untap another target permanent; cycling side costs `{1}{U}`, discards Vizier, draws a card, and triggers an untap of target permanent.
- Mode map: Creature mode supports repeat untaps over multiple turns; cycling mode is one-shot velocity that can untap Dawn's Reflection, Overgrowth, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Gretchen Titchwillow, Viridian Longbow carrier, or another key permanent.
- Partners / packages: Strong with enchanted Forest or Island, Gretchen Titchwillow, Viridian Longbow, Freed from the Real on another creature, and High Tide turns.
- Role peers: Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Emerald Charm, Tidal Bore, Cerulean Wisps, and Hidden Strings are one-shot untap peers; Voyaging Satyr and Krosan Restorer are repeatable land-focused peers.
- Failure modes: The tap ability cannot untap Vizier itself because it says another target permanent; cycling discards a reusable engine body.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Preserve it against slow decks; cycle more aggressively when under pressure or when one untap produces a decisive Gretchen activation or protected payoff turn.
#### Viridian Longbow
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, artifact Equipment payoff and compact win outlet.
- Role type: combo finisher; reach/finisher; engine payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Gives equipped creature “{T}: This creature deals 1 damage to any target,” turning repeated untaps into creature control or deterministic damage to the opponent.
- Timing: Cast early only if equip and untap support is close; equip at sorcery speed before a protected turn, not into obvious removal when the carrier cannot activate.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}` to cast, `{3}` to equip to target creature you control, then uses the equipped creature's tap to deal 1 damage to any target.
- Partners / packages: Best carriers or enablers are Pili-Pala, Krosan Restorer, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Galvanic Alchemist, creatures enchanted by Freed from the Real, creatures untapped by Vitalize, Dramatic Reversal, Cerulean Wisps, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, or Hidden Strings.
- Role peers: Wildheart Invoker is the other mana-to-kill payoff; Evanescent Intellect is a non-damage mill outlet; Gretchen Titchwillow converts mana into cards instead of direct lethal.
- Failure modes: Equip only as a sorcery; summoning sickness affects new creature carriers; without repeated untaps it is slow and mana-intensive.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent through stalled boards and against small utility creatures; target creatures first when they threaten lethal or break the loop, target the opponent when the damage line is already deterministic.
#### Impulse
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant-speed selection and setup glue.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Looks at the top four cards, puts one into hand, and bottoms the rest in any order to find the missing land, Aura, untapper, protection spell, or payoff.
- Timing: Cast on the opponent's end step when holding interaction is valuable; cast main phase when the selected card may change the land drop, Aura target, or combo sequence this turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{U}` and one card; outputs the best of four seen cards while preserving hidden library order below them.
- Partners / packages: Finds Forest, Island, Command Tower, Arcane Signet, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Counterspell, Dispel, Freed from the Real, Viridian Longbow, or Wildheart Invoker depending on the missing role.
- Role peers: Ponder and Brainstorm are cheaper selection; Frantic Search and Tolarian Winds churn more cards; Gretchen Titchwillow and Deep Analysis provide card quantity.
- Failure modes: Taking generic value over the missing engine category can leave the deck with mana but no payoff or protection but no engine.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against fast pressure, prioritize immediate stabilization from Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, Imprisoned in the Moon, or a blocker over slow setup.
#### Llanowar Visionary
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, value mana creature and stabilizing body.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Draws a card on entry and taps for `{G}`, bridging early development into Gretchen Titchwillow activations or four-mana Auras.
- Timing: Cast when spending turn three on a cantripping mana source is safe; block with it once the card draw has resolved and its green mana is less important than life total.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{G}`; outputs one card, a 2/2 body, and repeatable green mana.
- Partners / packages: Helps cast Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Wildheart Invoker, Return to Nature, Weather the Storm, Gleeful Sabotage, and Serene Heart after sideboarding.
- Role peers: Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Arcane Signet, Careful Cultivation token, and Command Tower all help mana, but Llanowar Visionary uniquely replaces itself on entry.
- Failure modes: It does not untap lands, so it is not a true enchanted-land loop piece; tapping it for mana can remove a needed blocker.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus attrition and midrange; against evasive aggro it is a ground body that may not answer the actual clock.
#### Command Tower
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premium two-color land and mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Taps for one mana of any color in Gretchen Titchwillow's green-blue color identity, smoothing early commander, counterspell, and Aura sequencing.
- Timing: Lead on Command Tower when the hand needs both colors or cannot afford a tapped land; preserve it when Crop Rotation sacrifice choices include less critical lands.
- Inputs / outputs: Uses land drop; outputs either green or blue mana.
- Partners / packages: Casts Gretchen Titchwillow, supports Counterspell alongside Island, supports Utopia Sprawl alongside Forest, and pays for Merchant Scroll, Arcane Signet, Fertile Ground, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Annul, Return to Nature, Weather the Storm, Scattershot Archer, Spore Frog, Relic of Progenitus, Gleeful Sabotage, and Serene Heart.
- Role peers: Opal Palace fixes with extra cost, Simic Growth Chamber produces `{G}{U}` but enters tapped and bounces a land, Arcane Signet fixes as an artifact.
- Failure modes: It is not a Forest or Island, so Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, High Tide, Lórien Revealed Islandcycling, Foil alternate cost, Daze alternate cost, and Mystic Sanctuary checks do not treat it as those basic land types.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best keep-enabling nonbasic; protect colored sequencing against tempo decks by using Command Tower before Simic Growth Chamber when interaction must stay up.
#### Sheltered Aerie
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, land Aura that grants a two-mana tap ability.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a land and gives it “{T}: Add two mana of any one color,” which replaces reliance on the land's printed mana ability for a clean two-mana source.
- Timing: Cast when a repeat untapper is available or when two mana of one color unlocks Gretchen Titchwillow, Counterspell, Freed from the Real, or Wildheart Invoker sequencing.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{G}` and a land target; outputs a tap ability for two mana of one chosen color each activation.
- Partners / packages: Works with Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Hidden Strings, and Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Role peers: Grafted Growth has the same granted land tap ability plus a +1/+1 counter trigger; Nature's Embrace can grant the same land ability if enchanting a land; Dawn's Reflection and Market Festival add mana instead of replacing the tap output.
- Failure modes: Because the granted ability adds two mana of one color, choose current and future color needs carefully; it does not create mixed `{G}{U}` from one tap.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good when the opponent lacks land interaction; risky when committing it to the only colored land against bounce or Aura destruction.
#### Glittering Frost
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, fixing land Aura and snow-converting engine piece.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a land, makes it snow, and adds one mana of any color whenever enchanted land is tapped for mana.
- Timing: Use as a three-mana fixer when an untapper can multiply the extra mana or when color smoothing matters more than raw output.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{G}` and a land target; outputs one additional mana of any color per mana tap of that land.
- Partners / packages: Combines with Arbor Elf if placed on Forest, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Hidden Strings, and Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Role peers: Fertile Ground and Blighted Burgeoning also add one mana of any color; Urban Utopia grants a one-mana any-color ability and draws a card; Dawn's Reflection and Market Festival are higher-output.
- Failure modes: Snow status has no registered payoff in this list, so do not value that clause beyond exact rules text; three mana for only one extra mana can be slow under pressure.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in stable setup games; sideboard Serene Heart destroys it, so avoid relying on it if your own Serene Heart reset is likely.
#### Market Festival
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, high-output land Aura and core mana engine piece.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a land so whenever it is tapped for mana, its controller adds an additional two mana in any combination of colors.
- Timing: Commit when the enchanted land can be untapped the same turn or protected through the next opponent turn; it is a four-mana investment.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{3}{G}` and a land target; outputs two extra mana in any color combination per mana tap.
- Partners / packages: Strong with Arbor Elf on Forest, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Frantic Search, Peregrine Drake, Hidden Strings, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, and Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Role peers: Dawn's Reflection is the exact functional peer; Overgrowth gives green-only extra mana; Sheltered Aerie and Grafted Growth grant a two-mana single-color tap ability.
- Failure modes: Expensive to deploy into open interaction; if the enchanted land is removed or bounced, the lost tempo is severe.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in slower midrange/control games where one protected land dominates; against aggro, cast only if it immediately accelerates survival or combo.
#### Grafted Growth
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, land Aura with small creature-counter utility.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a land, puts a +1/+1 counter on target creature or Vehicle you control when it enters, and gives the land “{T}: Add two mana of any one color.”
- Timing: Use when the +1/+1 counter has a real target and the two-mana land ability helps the current engine; do not expose a key land just to place a low-impact counter.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{G}`; consumes a land target and a creature or Vehicle you control for the counter trigger; outputs a two-mana single-color tap ability from the enchanted land.
- Partners / packages: Counter can matter on Gretchen Titchwillow, Pili-Pala, Wildheart Invoker, or an equipped Viridian Longbow carrier; the land ability works with Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, and Emerald Charm.
- Role peers: Sheltered Aerie grants the same land tap ability without the counter; Nature's Embrace can enchant creature or land; Fertile Ground and Glittering Frost are cheaper-output fixers.
- Failure modes: Requires a target creature or Vehicle you control for the enter trigger; the land ability adds two mana of one color, not mixed colors.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Useful when a small toughness boost protects an engine creature from one-damage effects, but still primarily a mana Aura.
#### Vedalken Aethermage
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flash Wizard with Wizardcycling tutor role.
- Role type: tutor/search; modal utility; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Usually Wizardcycles for a specific Wizard; flash body and Sliver-bounce trigger are secondary because the trigger only returns target Sliver to its owner's hand.
- Timing: Wizardcycle when Galvanic Alchemist, Oboro Breezecaller, Drift of Phantasms, or another Vedalken Aethermage line is the missing role; cast with flash only when a 1/2 body or Sliver bounce matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Wizardcycling costs `{3}`, discards Vedalken Aethermage, searches for a Wizard card, reveals it, puts it into hand, then shuffles; cast side costs `{1}{U}`.
- Mode map: Flash creature mode provides a small instant-speed body and Sliver-only bounce; Wizardcycling mode is the main deck use and does not draw.
- Partners / packages: Finds Galvanic Alchemist for Soulbond untap, Oboro Breezecaller for land-return untaps, Drift of Phantasms for defense/transmute, or Step Through if chaining Wizard search is useful.
- Role peers: Step Through also Wizardcycles; Drift of Phantasms searches by mana value with transmute.
- Failure modes: Cannot Wizardcycle for Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Pili-Pala, Wildheart Invoker, or Gretchen Titchwillow because they are not Wizards.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, tutor mode is a setup piece; against creature decks, the 1/2 flash body is only relevant if it changes combat or blocks one damage source.
#### Stone-Seeder Hierophant
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, landfall untapper and fragile engine piece.
- Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Taps to untap target land, then untaps itself whenever a land you control enters, turning Gretchen Titchwillow's land-put ability, Simic Growth Chamber replay patterns, Crop Rotation, and normal land drops into extra untaps of a loaded land.
- Timing: Deploy when a high-output enchanted land is ready or when a held land drop can immediately untap Stone-Seeder Hierophant after use; sequence land entries after the tap ability so landfall creates mana instead of only board development.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{G}{G}`; uses tap ability to untap target land; landfall from your land entries untaps Stone-Seeder Hierophant.
- Partners / packages: Strong with Gretchen Titchwillow putting land cards from hand onto the battlefield, Simic Growth Chamber replay patterns, Crop Rotation, Mystic Sanctuary, and high-output Auras Dawn's Reflection, Overgrowth, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Grafted Growth, Nature's Embrace, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, and Fertile Ground.
- Role peers: Voyaging Satyr and Krosan Restorer untap lands directly; Arbor Elf is cheaper but Forest-only.
- Failure modes: Treating it as generic ramp is too slow; without a land entry queued or an overproducing land to untap, the 1/1 can die before paying back the four-mana setup.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Prioritize protection with Turn Aside, Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Dispel, or Counterspell when it is the only untapper paired with an overproducing land.
#### Voyaging Satyr
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, repeatable land untapper and core engine creature.
- Role type: engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Taps to untap target land, converting enchanted lands and High Tide-boosted Islands into repeatable mana.
- Timing: Cast early when a land Aura is present or likely; preserve from combat unless blocking buys the only needed turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{G}`; later taps to untap any target land.
- Role peers: Arbor Elf is cheaper but only untaps Forest; Krosan Restorer can scale to three lands at threshold; Stone-Seeder Hierophant untaps lands and untaps itself with landfall.
- Failure modes: Summoning sickness delays the first activation; removing the enchanted land or the Satyr can break the line.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against removal-heavy decks, wait to commit the best Aura until Voyaging Satyr can generate mana or protection is ready.
#### Galvanic Alchemist
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, Wizard untap engine and combo enabler.
- Role type: combo enabler; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Soulbonds with another unpaired creature so both paired creatures have `{2}{U}: Untap this creature`, enabling repeat untaps when the paired creature taps for more than the activation cost or carries Viridian Longbow.
- Timing: Cast when the intended partner is ready, unpaired, and either protected or able to profit immediately; avoid casual deployment into removal with no partner.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{U}`; outputs a paired pair of creatures with a blue untap activation.
- Role peers: Freed from the Real grants tap/untap abilities through an Aura; Dramatic Reversal and Vitalize untap groups once; Vizier of Tumbling Sands provides a single tap untap engine.
- Failure modes: Soulbond requires pairing with another unpaired creature; the untap activation costs `{2}{U}`, so the paired creature must produce or convert enough value to justify it.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: A premium protection target against control and removal; Wizardcycling from Step Through or Vedalken Aethermage can find it when it is the missing loop piece.
#### Emerald Charm
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana modal instant with untap and narrow answer modes.
- Role type: modal utility; engine piece; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Most often untaps target permanent during a mana turn, but can destroy target non-Aura enchantment or make target creature lose flying until end of turn.
- Timing: Use untap mode after tapping the relevant permanent; use enchantment mode only when a non-Aura enchantment is actually the problem; use lose-flying mode when it changes blocks or lethal combat.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{G}`; outputs one of three targeted effects.
- Mode map: Untap target permanent for engine mana or Viridian Longbow reuse; destroy target non-Aura enchantment for resolved enchantment hate; target creature loses flying until end of turn for combat interaction.
- Partners / packages: Untaps Gretchen Titchwillow, enchanted lands, Viridian Longbow carriers, or mana creatures; answers non-Aura enchantments that Annul, Return to Nature, or Gleeful Sabotage may also cover after sideboarding.
- Role peers: Twiddle and Dream's Grip are broader tap/untap peers; Return to Nature and Gleeful Sabotage are stronger resolved-artifact/enchantment answers from the sideboard.
- Failure modes: Cannot destroy Auras; lose-flying does not remove abilities other than flying and does not tap or damage the creature.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Keep flexible against unknown opponents; in Aura matchups it does not answer the Aura itself, so use Serene Heart or Return to Nature post-board.
- Role type: modal utility; engine piece; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Taps or untaps target creature, either by paying `{1}{U}` or returning an Island you control to its owner's hand rather than paying its mana cost.
- Timing: Use free casting when preserving mana matters and returning Island will not break High Tide, Counterspell, Foil, Daze, Mystic Sanctuary, or future land sequencing.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes either `{1}{U}` or an Island returned from battlefield to hand; outputs tap or untap on target creature.
- Mode map: Untap target creature for mana creature, Viridian Longbow carrier, Gretchen Titchwillow, or Galvanic Alchemist line; tap target creature to remove an attacker or blocker for a turn.
- Partners / packages: Pairs with Pili-Pala, Krosan Restorer, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Wildheart Invoker attackers, and Viridian Longbow carriers.
- Role peers: Cerulean Wisps untaps and draws but only targets a creature; Twiddle can target artifact, creature, or land; Dream's Grip can tap or untap any permanent.
- Failure modes: Cannot target lands or artifacts; returning Island can reduce High Tide output and may strand blue interaction.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in tempo races where tapping one attacker prevents lethal or untapping one engine creature wins immediately.
#### Krosan Restorer
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, scalable land untapper and major combo creature.
- Role type: engine piece; mechanic payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Taps to untap target land, and with threshold, taps to untap up to three target lands if there are seven or more cards in your graveyard.
- Timing: Cast when it can survive to untap a high-output land; threshold turns should be planned around graveyard count from cycling, tutors, used spells, and fetch-like Crop Rotation lines.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{G}`; outputs one land untap normally or up to three land untaps at threshold.
- Partners / packages: Strong with Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Grafted Growth, Nature's Embrace, Simic Growth Chamber, High Tide, Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Viridian Longbow, and Vitalize.
- Role peers: Voyaging Satyr is cheaper; Arbor Elf is Forest-only; Stone-Seeder Hierophant scales with land entries.
- Failure modes: Threshold requires seven or more cards in your graveyard; Relic of Progenitus can reset your own threshold if activated broadly.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: A top protection target when the graveyard is near threshold; against graveyard hate, treat it as a one-land untapper unless threshold is already secured.
#### Dream's Grip
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana tap/untap instant with entwine option.
- Role type: modal utility; engine piece; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Chooses tap target permanent or untap target permanent, with entwine `{1}` allowing both choices if paid.
- Timing: Use untap mode after tapping a mana-rich permanent; use tap mode to stop an attacker, blocker, or active permanent for the turn; entwine when both halves materially matter.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}`, plus optional `{1}` entwine; outputs tap, untap, or both if entwined.
- Mode map: Tap mode disrupts a permanent; untap mode fuels an engine; entwined mode can tap an opposing blocker and untap your enchanted land or Viridian Longbow carrier.
- Partners / packages: Works with enchanted lands, Gretchen Titchwillow, Viridian Longbow carriers, Pili-Pala, Krosan Restorer, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, and Wildheart Invoker attacks.
- Role peers: Twiddle has a target restriction of artifact, creature, or land; Emerald Charm untaps any permanent but has different alternate modes; Tidal Bore is creature-only.
- Failure modes: Spending it for a low-value tap can lose a future mana-positive turn; entwine requires extra generic mana and legal choices for both effects.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against creature pressure, tap mode can buy a turn; against control, preserve it for the protected engine window.
#### Blighted Burgeoning
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, land Aura plus Incubator material.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a land, incubates 2 on entry, and adds one mana of any color whenever enchanted land is tapped for mana.
- Timing: Cast when a one-mana bonus plus an Incubator token is worth the three-mana investment; transform the Incubator only when a 2/2 Phyrexian artifact creature matters.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{G}` and a land target; creates an Incubator token with two +1/+1 counters and `{2}: Transform this token`; outputs one extra mana of any color per tap of the enchanted land.
- Mode map: Aura plan builds mana; Incubator transform spends `{2}` later to make a 0/0 Phyrexian artifact creature with two +1/+1 counters.
- Partners / packages: The enchanted land works with Arbor Elf if Forest, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore indirectly via creature untappers, and Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Role peers: Fertile Ground and Glittering Frost are similar one-extra-mana Auras; Urban Utopia cantrips; Grafted Growth creates a counter instead of an Incubator.
- Failure modes: The Incubator does not produce mana before paying `{2}` to transform; the Aura remains vulnerable to Serene Heart and enchantment removal.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Token body is relevant against edicts or aggro, but do not spend transform mana if it delays a protected combo turn.
#### Evanescent Intellect
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, creature Aura mill outlet and fringe payoff.
- Role type: engine payoff; reach/finisher.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a creature and gives it `{1}{U}, {T}: Target player mills three cards`, turning repeated untaps into a library-pressure win line when damage or combat is unreliable.
- Timing: Commit only when the enchanted creature can activate soon, be untapped repeatedly, or when the opponent's library is the chosen win axis.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}` and a creature target; later consumes `{1}{U}` and the enchanted creature's tap to make target player mill three cards.
- Partners / packages: Works with Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Vitalize, Dramatic Reversal, Cerulean Wisps, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Hidden Strings, and creatures that can survive long enough to tap.
- Role peers: Viridian Longbow is the damage-based tap outlet; Wildheart Invoker is the combat mana sink; Gretchen Titchwillow is the card-draw mana sink.
- Failure modes: Aura exposes the creature to removal; milling the wrong player can help graveyard decks; the activation needs blue mana and does not affect board survival immediately.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Poor against graveyard-recursion opponents unless it is immediately lethal; stronger against lifegain or locked combat if repeated untaps are legal.
#### Oboro Breezecaller
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flying Wizard and land-return untap engine.
- Role type: engine piece; mechanic enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Uses `{2}, Return a land you control to its owner's hand: Untap target land`, letting high-output enchanted lands or High Tide Islands be reused while also enabling land replay value.
- Timing: Deploy when returning a land will not set back colors and the untap target produces more than the activation cost or enables Gretchen Titchwillow land-put sequencing.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{U}`; activation consumes two generic mana and returns a land you control to hand; outputs untap target land.
- Partners / packages: Works with Simic Growth Chamber, Mystic Sanctuary, Gretchen Titchwillow, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Forest or Island carrying Dawn's Reflection, Overgrowth, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, or Urban Utopia.
- Role peers: Voyaging Satyr and Krosan Restorer untap lands without returning a land; Step Through and Vedalken Aethermage can find Oboro Breezecaller through Wizardcycling.
- Failure modes: Returning the wrong land can lose protection mana, High Tide count, or Mystic Sanctuary conditions; 1/1 body is fragile.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Better in slow games with land-drop engines; worse under pressure where bouncing a land costs a full turn of development.
#### Nature's Embrace
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flexible Aura for land mana or creature pump.
- Role type: modal utility; mana/fixing/ramp; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants creature or land; on a creature it gives +2/+2, and on a land it gives “{T}: Add two mana of any one color.”
- Timing: Choose land mode when building a mana engine; choose creature mode only when +2/+2 changes survival, combat, or a Wildheart Invoker clock.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{G}` and targets a creature or land; outputs either a creature stat boost or a two-mana single-color land tap ability depending on enchanted permanent type.
- Mode map: Land aspect is the primary engine role; creature aspect can protect or pressure with Gretchen Titchwillow, Wildheart Invoker, Pili-Pala, or a Viridian Longbow carrier but does not grant mana unless the enchanted permanent is a land.
- Partners / packages: Land aspect pairs with Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore via creature untappers, and Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Role peers: Sheltered Aerie and Grafted Growth grant similar land mana; Grafted Growth adds a counter; Careful Cultivation enchants artifact or creature and grants creature mana.
- Failure modes: Putting it on a creature sacrifices the land-engine role; putting it on a land exposes mana to Aura removal and Serene Heart.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Creature mode matters against damage-based removal or combat races; land mode matters most against slow decks.
#### Drift of Phantasms
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, defensive flyer and transmute tutor.
- Role type: tutor/search; protection/evasion; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Blocks flyers as a 0/5 defender or transmutes for a card with mana value 3 when the missing engine category is at that mana value.
- Timing: Transmute at sorcery speed when the three-mana target changes the game; cast as a blocker when flying pressure is the immediate problem.
- Inputs / outputs: Cast costs `{2}{U}` for a 0/5 flying defender; transmute costs `{1}{U}{U}`, discards Drift of Phantasms, searches for a card with mana value 3, reveals it, puts it into hand, then shuffles.
- Mode map: Creature aspect stabilizes combat but cannot attack; transmute aspect can find mana value 3 cards such as Freed from the Real, Krosan Restorer, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Galvanic Alchemist, Overgrowth, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, Careful Cultivation, Frantic Search, or Resculpt.
- Partners / packages: Finds Freed from the Real when an untapper is ready, Krosan Restorer for land loops, Frantic Search for High Tide turns, or Resculpt for a must-answer artifact/creature.
- Role peers: Step Through and Vedalken Aethermage tutor Wizards; Merchant Scroll tutors blue instants.
- Failure modes: Transmute only as a sorcery; cannot find Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, Gretchen Titchwillow, or Dawn's Reflection.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against flyers, body mode may be more important than tutoring; against control, transmute for a protected engine piece is usually stronger.
#### Simic Growth Chamber
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tapped bounce land and high-value mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Enters tapped, returns a land you control to hand, and taps for `{G}{U}`, giving both commander colors from one land drop.
- Timing: Play when the bounced land can be replayed profitably or when you can afford the tapped tempo; avoid early lines that strand one-mana interaction or Aura targets.
- Inputs / outputs: Uses a land drop and bounces a land you control on entry; outputs `{G}{U}` on later taps.
- Partners / packages: Works with Gretchen Titchwillow extra land placement, Stone-Seeder Hierophant landfall, Oboro Breezecaller land-return patterns, and Crop Rotation target maps.
- Role peers: Command Tower fixes without tempo loss; Opal Palace fixes with mana investment; Mystic Sanctuary has spell recursion but stricter entry value.
- Failure modes: Vulnerable to bounce-land tempo blowouts; not a Forest or Island for Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, High Tide, Foil, Daze, Lórien Revealed Islandcycling, or Mystic Sanctuary checks.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in slow hands with land count; risky against tempo or aggro when entering tapped costs a setup turn.
#### Lórien Revealed
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, draw-three spell and Islandcycling land access.
- Role type: card selection; tutor/search; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Either hard-casts for draw three or Islandcycles for `{1}` to find an Island card; in this deck Islandcycling can find Island or Mystic Sanctuary because both have the Island type.
- Timing: Islandcycle early when mana is missing; hard-cast when five mana is available and drawing three is stronger than holding interaction.
- Inputs / outputs: Sorcery mode costs `{3}{U}{U}` and draws three cards; Islandcycling costs `{1}`, discards Lórien Revealed, searches for an Island card, reveals it, puts it into hand, then shuffles.
- Mode map: Draw-three mode increases cards drawn this turn; Islandcycling does not draw and instead searches for Island or Mystic Sanctuary, reveals that Island card, puts it into hand, then shuffles.
- Role peers: Deep Analysis draws two twice over time; Ponder, Brainstorm, and Impulse are cheaper selection; Merchant Scroll and Crop Rotation search different card classes.
- Failure modes: Five-mana sorcery can be too slow; cycling for Mystic Sanctuary only puts it into hand and does not trigger Sanctuary.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Cuttable against fast aggro after sideboarding; valuable against control when card volume matters and graveyard hate is not pressuring Mystic Sanctuary plans.
#### Careful Cultivation
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, creature/artifact Aura ramp with channel token fallback.
- Role type: modal utility; mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants artifact or creature to give a creature +1/+3, reach, and `{T}: Add {G}{G}`, or channels for a 1/1 green Human Monk token with `{T}: Add {G}`.
- Timing: Enchant a creature when the body can survive and double-green output matters; channel when an Aura target is unsafe or you need a standalone mana creature.
- Inputs / outputs: Aura mode costs `{2}{G}` and targets artifact or creature; channel costs `{1}{G}` and discards Careful Cultivation to create the mana Monk token.
- Mode map: Aura mode turns a creature into a larger reach mana engine; channel mode creates a separate 1/1 green Human Monk mana creature and avoids Aura exposure.
- Partners / packages: Aura mode works on Gretchen Titchwillow, Pili-Pala, Wildheart Invoker, Llanowar Visionary, Krosan Restorer, or a Viridian Longbow carrier; channel token works with Vitalize and Dramatic Reversal.
- Role peers: Llanowar Visionary draws and taps for `{G}`; Arbor Elf and Voyaging Satyr are cheaper engine creatures; Nature's Embrace can pump a creature but grants land mana only on lands.
- Failure modes: Aura mode does not enchant lands; channel token has summoning sickness and produces only green.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against removal-heavy decks, channel is safer; against flyers, reach on the enchanted creature can stabilize combat.
#### Tolarian Winds
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, high-variance hand reset.
- Role type: card selection; discard outlet.
- Deck-specific job: Discards all cards in hand, then draws that many cards to convert stalled mixes of redundant mana, dead interaction, or uncastable payoffs into a fresh hand.
- Timing: Use only when the current hand cannot assemble mana plus untap plus payoff or when digging immediately is worth losing held cards.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{U}` and discards the entire hand; outputs the same number of drawn cards.
- Partners / packages: Can put Deep Analysis into the graveyard for flashback and increase Krosan Restorer threshold count; can find fresh access to Forest, Island, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Counterspell, Freed from the Real, or Viridian Longbow.
- Role peers: Frantic Search draws two then discards two and untaps lands; Brainstorm preserves selected cards; Gretchen Titchwillow and Deep Analysis generate cards without discarding the whole hand.
- Failure modes: Discards protection, payoff, and land drops if used carelessly; drawing the same number does not guarantee improved categories.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Weak against fast pressure and control when holding exact interaction matters; cuttable for Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Weather the Storm, Relic of Progenitus, or Serene Heart in sideboard plans.
#### Foil
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, hard counter with alternate pitch cost.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell, protecting combo turns even when tapped out if discarding an Island card and another card is worth the cost.
- Timing: Hard-cast when four mana is available; use alternate cost only to stop a spell that breaks the engine, wins the game, or removes the decisive payoff.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{U}{U}` or discards an Island card and another card instead; outputs counter target spell on the stack.
- Mode map: Mana-cast mode preserves cards; alternate-cost mode preserves mana but spends two cards, including an Island card such as Island or Mystic Sanctuary.
- Partners / packages: Protects Gretchen Titchwillow, Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, enchanted lands, High Tide turns, and Peregrine Drake.
- Role peers: Counterspell is cheaper hard permission; Arcane Denial is easier to cast but gives cards; Daze and Spell Pierce are soft permission.
- Failure modes: Cannot counter abilities or resolved permanents; pitching Mystic Sanctuary can lose recursion; pitching the only Island can harm High Tide and blue mana.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against combo and control; against creature aggro, save it for lethal pump, removal on the combo piece, or a must-counter noncreature spell rather than medium creatures.
#### Pili-Pala
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, artifact creature mana converter and Longbow carrier.
- Role type: combo enabler; engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Flying 1/1 with `{2}, {Q}: Add one mana of any color`, using the untap symbol to convert an untap event into colored mana and enabling repeated loops with tap effects.
- Timing: Deploy when you can protect it or need artifact-creature material; wait on exposing it if removal would break the only current combo line.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}`; activation consumes two generic mana and untaps Pili-Pala as part of the cost if tapped, producing one mana of any color.
- Partners / packages: Works with Viridian Longbow, Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Dramatic Reversal, Vitalize, Cerulean Wisps, Tidal Bore, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, and Emerald Charm.
- Role peers: Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, and Llanowar Visionary are mana creatures but do not use the untap symbol; Viridian Longbow turns Pili-Pala's repeated tapping into damage.
- Failure modes: Needs to be tapped before `{Q}` can be paid; the ability is mana-negative without a loop or payoff; 1/1 flying body dies easily.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Good against board stalls as evasive Longbow carrier; poor as a blocker unless one flying damage prevention matters.
#### Dramatic Reversal
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant untap burst for nonland permanents.
- Role type: engine piece; combo enabler.
- Deck-specific job: Untaps all nonland permanents you control, reusing Arcane Signet, mana creatures, Viridian Longbow carriers, Gretchen Titchwillow, and Careful Cultivation creatures during a combo turn.
- Timing: Cast after tapping relevant nonland permanents for mana, damage, or abilities; hold until it produces more than two mana or a decisive extra activation.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{U}`; outputs untap of all your nonland permanents.
- Role peers: Vitalize untaps each creature you control for `{G}`; Frantic Search untaps lands; Peregrine Drake and Cloud of Faeries untap lands on entry.
- Failure modes: Does not untap lands, so it is weak if the board's mana is only Forest, Island, Simic Growth Chamber, or enchanted lands with no creature/artifact tap support.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against removal-heavy opponents, use it in response windows only if the rules engine allows value before losing the permanent; otherwise save for a protected main-phase chain.
#### Cerulean Wisps
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, creature untap cantrip.
- Role type: engine piece; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Makes target creature blue until end of turn, untaps it, and draws a card, preserving card count while reusing a mana creature, commander, or Longbow carrier.
- Timing: Cast after the target creature has tapped; avoid firing it on an untapped creature unless the color change or cantrip is urgently needed.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}` and a creature target; outputs untap, temporary blue color, and one drawn card.
- Partners / packages: Works with Gretchen Titchwillow, Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Pili-Pala, Llanowar Visionary, Viridian Longbow carrier, and Wildheart Invoker attack math.
- Role peers: Tidal Bore untaps or taps a creature without drawing; Vitalize untaps each creature you control; Dramatic Reversal untaps nonland permanents.
- Failure modes: Cannot target lands or artifacts unless they are creatures; drawing one card may force decisions before mana is stable.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in protected engine turns; against aggro, can untap a surprise blocker while replacing itself if timing is legal.
#### Counterspell
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, premium hard permission.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell on the stack, protecting the active engine or stopping an opponent's decisive spell.
- Timing: Hold for removal, countermagic, hate, lethal spells, or commanders that will beat your setup; do not spend it on low-impact development when the combo is still fragile.
- Partners / packages: Protects Gretchen Titchwillow, Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, enchanted lands, High Tide, Peregrine Drake, and Mystic Sanctuary loops.
- Role peers: Foil is a harder but costlier counter; Arcane Denial is easier but gives cards; Negate, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Miscalculation, and Daze are narrower or conditional.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strongest against combo and control; against aggro, use on the spell that changes the clock or kills your stabilizing engine.
#### Daze
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, early soft counter with Island-return alternate cost.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell unless its controller pays `{1}`, either for `{1}{U}` or by returning an Island you control to hand instead of paying.
- Timing: Best in early stack fights or tapped-out combo turns; loses value once opponents can pay `{1}` easily.
- Inputs / outputs: Consumes either mana or a returned Island you control; outputs a conditional counter on target spell.
- Mode map: Mana-cast mode preserves land count; alternate-cost mode protects while tapped out but reduces Island count and land tempo.
- Partners / packages: Protects early Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Gretchen Titchwillow, Freed from the Real, and High Tide setup.
- Role peers: Spell Pierce and Miscalculation are similar soft counters; Foil is the other tapped-out counter but costs two cards.
- Failure modes: Opponent can pay `{1}`; returning Island can weaken High Tide, Foil, Mystic Sanctuary, Counterspell, and blue sequencing.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus tempo and early removal; board out or deprioritize in grindy games where mana is abundant.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target noncreature spell unless its controller pays `{2}`, efficiently protecting engine pieces from removal, opposing counters, sweepers, artifacts, enchantments, or planeswalker-like noncreature threats on the stack.
- Timing: Hold up on key early turns; use before opponents have spare mana or when they tap low during a stack fight.
- Partners / packages: Protects Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Freed from the Real, Viridian Longbow, Gretchen Titchwillow, and High Tide turns.
- Role peers: Miscalculation also taxes `{2}` but hits any spell; Negate hits noncreature spells unconditionally; Dispel hits only instant spells.
- Failure modes: Cannot target creature spells; weak when opponent can pay `{2}`.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control, combo, artifact/enchantment engines on the stack, and removal-heavy decks; weaker against creature-heavy aggro.
#### Wildheart Invoker
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, large-mana combat finisher.
- Role type: reach/finisher; threat/clock; engine payoff.
- Deck-specific job: Turns excess mana into lethal pressure with `{8}: Target creature gets +5/+5 and gains trample until end of turn`.
- Timing: Cast when it can survive or when the deck already has enough mana to threaten activation soon; activate before damage after checking blockers and removal.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{G}{G}`; activation consumes eight generic mana and gives target creature +5/+5 and trample until end of turn.
- Partners / packages: Converts mana from Gretchen Titchwillow engines, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, High Tide, Peregrine Drake, Cloud of Faeries, Krosan Restorer, Voyaging Satyr, and Stone-Seeder Hierophant into combat damage.
- Role peers: Viridian Longbow kills through tap damage; Evanescent Intellect mills; Gretchen Titchwillow draws into more action.
- Failure modes: Requires combat access and a target creature; removal or fog effects can blank the mana investment; attacking with engine creatures can expose future mana.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against stalled ground boards because trample breaks through; weaker against instant-speed removal unless protected by Counterspell, Dispel, Turn Aside, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a creature and gives `{U}: Tap enchanted creature` and `{U}: Untap enchanted creature`, enabling repeated mana, Longbow damage, or mill activations when the creature's tap ability is profitable.
- Timing: Commit only when the enchanted creature can immediately produce value or protection is ready; do not cast as a speculative Aura into open removal.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{U}` and a creature target; later consumes blue mana to tap or untap the enchanted creature.
- Mode map: Tap ability can tap the enchanted creature for tactical control; untap ability is the main combo role with creatures that tap for mana, land untaps, Viridian Longbow, or Evanescent Intellect.
- Partners / packages: Best with Krosan Restorer, Voyaging Satyr, Arbor Elf, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Pili-Pala, Llanowar Visionary, Viridian Longbow carriers, and Evanescent Intellect carriers.
- Role peers: Galvanic Alchemist grants untap through Soulbond; Cerulean Wisps, Vitalize, Dramatic Reversal, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, and Tidal Bore are one-shot or group untaps.
- Failure modes: Requires blue mana for each activation; Aura removal or creature removal can create a two-card loss; Serene Heart destroys it.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, hold until a protected go-now turn; against aggro, use only if it stabilizes or wins before the next combat.
#### Opal Palace
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, utility fixer and commander-scaling land.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Taps for `{C}`, or pays `{1}` and taps for one mana of Gretchen Titchwillow's color identity; if that mana casts Gretchen, she enters with additional +1/+1 counters equal to command-zone casts this game.
- Timing: Use as fixing when color sources are otherwise stable; use commander counter clause when Gretchen has been cast from command zone enough times for toughness or damage math to matter.
- Inputs / outputs: Land drop; outputs colorless or filtered green/blue with extra generic input; commander-use output can add +1/+1 counters to Gretchen.
- Partners / packages: Helps cast Gretchen Titchwillow through commander tax, Counterspell only indirectly with another blue source, and green Auras when Forest is absent.
- Role peers: Command Tower fixes without payment; Simic Growth Chamber produces both colors but enters tapped; Arcane Signet fixes as a nonland permanent.
- Failure modes: Colorless mode does not cast colored one-mana spells; filtered mode costs `{1}` and can be clunky early.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Counters on Gretchen matter in combat-heavy games; against fast starts, do not keep Opal Palace as the only colored plan without Arcane Signet or other lands.
#### Imprisoned in the Moon
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, durable Aura answer to creature, land, or planeswalker.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants target creature, land, or planeswalker and turns it into a colorless land with “{T}: Add {C},” removing all other card types and abilities.
- Timing: Use on a commander, active engine permanent, lethal threat, or land whose abilities matter; avoid spending it on low-impact creatures if Resculpt, Snap, or Echoing Truth can handle the immediate issue.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{U}` and an eligible target; outputs a long-term neutralization that leaves the opponent a colorless mana land.
- Partners / packages: Complements Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Miscalculation, Echoing Truth, Snap, and Resculpt as the resolved-permanent answer suite.
- Role peers: Resculpt exiles artifact or creature but gives a 4/4; Echoing Truth and Snap are temporary; Return to Nature and Gleeful Sabotage post-board hit different permanent types.
- Failure modes: Cannot target artifacts unless they are also creatures, lands, or planeswalkers; Aura removal can restore the permanent.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against commander-centric and single-threat decks because commander tax and recast timing matter after the enchanted permanent is handled.
#### Snap
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, tempo creature bounce and land untap spell.
- Role type: interaction-removal; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Returns target creature to its owner's hand and untaps up to two lands, functioning as both removal tempo and mana-positive spell with enchanted lands or High Tide Islands.
- Timing: Use during combo turns when untapping lands matters, or defensively before combat/lethal; avoid firing on a low-value creature if the untap clause is wasted.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{U}`; outputs creature bounce and up to two land untaps.
- Partners / packages: Strong with Island under High Tide, lands enchanted by Dawn's Reflection, Overgrowth, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Grafted Growth, Nature's Embrace, Glittering Frost, Fertile Ground, and Wild Growth.
- Role peers: Echoing Truth hits nonland permanents and same-name objects; Resculpt permanently handles artifact or creature; Imprisoned in the Moon neutralizes creature, land, or planeswalker.
- Failure modes: Only targets creatures; bouncing an opponent's cheap creature may not solve the problem; untap up to two lands requires useful lands to untap.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against creature pressure and blockers before Wildheart Invoker; also a Merchant Scroll target because it is a blue instant.
#### Resculpt
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant artifact/creature exile with drawback.
- Role type: interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Exiles target artifact or creature, then that permanent's controller creates a 4/4 blue and red Elemental creature token.
- Timing: Use when the exiled artifact or creature is more dangerous than a 4/4 token, especially commanders, combo creatures, hate artifacts, or lethal evasive threats.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{U}`; outputs exile of one artifact or creature and gives its controller a 4/4 token.
- Partners / packages: Complements Imprisoned in the Moon for resolved threats, Snap for tempo, Echoing Truth for nonland bounce, and Counterspell for stack prevention.
- Role peers: Imprisoned in the Moon is better for single commanders if Aura sticks; Snap is tempo-positive with lands; Echoing Truth can hit enchantments or tokens.
- Failure modes: The 4/4 can become the new clock; cannot target enchantments, planeswalkers, or nonartifact noncreature permanents.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus artifact engines and must-answer creatures; poor if the opponent can use the 4/4 to kill you before the combo turn.
#### Twiddle
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana artifact/creature/land tap or untap instant.
- Role type: engine piece; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Taps or untaps target artifact, creature, or land, giving a cheap engine untap or temporary interaction with a blocker, attacker, mana artifact, or land.
- Timing: Use after tapping the target for mana or damage; hold if the current untap does not create mana, protection, or lethal progress.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}` and a target artifact, creature, or land; outputs tap or untap.
- Role peers: Dream's Grip can hit any permanent and has entwine; Emerald Charm untaps any permanent but cannot tap; Tidal Bore is creature-only with Island-return option.
- Failure modes: Cannot target enchantments or planeswalkers; using tap mode for minor tempo can waste a combo enabler.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against creature pressure when it taps a lethal attacker; strong in combo turns when it untaps a multiplied land.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell that targets a permanent you control, defending Gretchen Titchwillow, an enchanted land, a key untapper, Viridian Longbow, or Freed from the Real carrier.
- Timing: Hold for targeted removal or disruption aimed at a decisive permanent; do not use on low-impact targets unless losing that permanent changes survival.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}`; outputs counter of a spell on the stack only if it targets a permanent you control.
- Role peers: Tamiyo's Safekeeping protects a target permanent you control directly; Dispel counters instant spells; Counterspell counters any spell.
- Failure modes: Does not counter abilities, sweepers that do not target, edicts, or spells that target players only; cannot answer resolved permanents.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Premium against removal-heavy control and red removal when Hydroblast or Blue Elemental Blast is not available.
#### Arbor Elf
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana Forest untapper and core acceleration.
- Role type: engine piece; mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Taps to untap target Forest, making Forest enchanted by Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Glittering Frost, Blighted Burgeoning, or Urban Utopia into an engine.
- Timing: Cast on turn one whenever possible with Forest access; preserve from combat unless blocking prevents lethal or buys the decisive turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{G}`; later taps to untap target Forest.
- Partners / packages: Best with Forest plus Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Glittering Frost, Blighted Burgeoning, Urban Utopia, or Nature's Embrace if the enchanted permanent is Forest.
- Role peers: Voyaging Satyr untaps any land for two mana; Krosan Restorer scales at threshold; Stone-Seeder Hierophant untaps lands and untaps itself on landfall.
- Failure modes: Cannot untap Island, Command Tower, Simic Growth Chamber, Opal Palace, Darksteel Citadel, or Mystic Sanctuary unless another effect makes them Forest.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: High-priority removal target for opponents; protect it when it is paired with the only high-output Forest.
#### Ponder
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana sorcery selection.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Looks at the top three cards, reorders them, may shuffle, then draws a card to find missing mana, an Aura, untapper, protection, or payoff.
- Timing: Cast before land drop when the land choice may change; cast after land drop when mana must stay available for Spell Pierce, Dispel, Daze, Miscalculation, Turn Aside, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}`; outputs one drawn card and optional shuffle after seeing three cards.
- Partners / packages: Searches toward Forest, Island, Command Tower, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Counterspell, Freed from the Real, Viridian Longbow, or High Tide depending on hand needs.
- Role peers: Brainstorm is instant and draws three then puts two back; Impulse sees four at instant speed; Gretchen Titchwillow is repeatable but expensive.
- Failure modes: Keeping a pile with only payoffs and no mana or only counters and no engine can lose tempo.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against aggro, prioritize immediate board impact or mana; against control, prioritize protected engine assembly over raw card volume.
#### Brainstorm
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant card selection and hand sculpting.
- Role type: card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Draws three cards, then puts two cards from hand on top of library, letting the deck hide or set up expensive pieces while digging for land, protection, or combo.
- Timing: Best with a shuffle or library-changing effect from Crop Rotation, Merchant Scroll, Drift of Phantasms transmute, Vedalken Aethermage Wizardcycling, Step Through Wizardcycling, or Lórien Revealed Islandcycling.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}`; draws three and returns two hand cards to the top of library.
- Partners / packages: Sets up Mystic Sanctuary draws, fixes hands with extra Wildheart Invoker, Viridian Longbow, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, or excess lands, and digs for Counterspell, Dispel, Utopia Sprawl, Arbor Elf, or High Tide.
- Role peers: Ponder has shuffle built in; Impulse bottoms unchosen cards; Frantic Search churns with discard and land untaps.
- Failure modes: Without a shuffle, bad cards put back may be redrawn; casting before deciding land drop can be correct, but using it with no plan can lock poor draws.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against discard or control, can hide key cards on top; against aggro, avoid spending mana on Brainstorm if a stabilizing play is required now.
#### Deep Analysis
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, sorcery card advantage with flashback.
- Role type: card selection; recursion.
- Deck-specific job: Target player draws two cards, and later flashback for `{1}{U}` plus 3 life gives another draw two from the graveyard before exile.
- Timing: Cast when tempo and life allow; flash back when 3 life is less important than finding engine pieces or protection.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{3}{U}` from hand or `{1}{U}` and 3 life from graveyard; outputs two cards to target player and exiles itself after flashback resolves.
- Mode map: Hand-cast mode preserves life but costs four mana; flashback mode uses graveyard access, two mana, and 3 life for another draw two.
- Partners / packages: Discarded profitably to Tolarian Winds, Frantic Search, or Foil's second-card cost if future flashback matters; Mystic Sanctuary can recur it only if it is an instant or sorcery in graveyard and Sanctuary enters untapped.
- Role peers: Lórien Revealed draws three once; Gretchen Titchwillow repeats card draw; Brainstorm, Ponder, and Impulse are cheaper selection.
- Failure modes: Targeting the opponent is almost never correct unless a deck-out line demands it; flashback life payment can lose races.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus control and midrange; weaker versus burn and fast aggro, where Weather the Storm or Spore Frog may matter post-board.
#### Crop Rotation
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant land tutor with sacrifice cost.
- Role type: tutor/search; mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Sacrifices a land as an additional cost, then searches for any land card, puts it onto the battlefield, and shuffles.
- Timing: Use only when the target land materially changes the turn or game; avoid sacrificing an enchanted land unless the payoff is immediate and decisive.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{G}`, a card, and sacrificing a land; outputs a land from library directly onto the battlefield.
- Partners / packages: Target map includes Mystic Sanctuary for instant/sorcery topdeck when entry condition is met, Simic Growth Chamber for `{G}{U}` and bounce value, Command Tower for fixing, Opal Palace for commander recasts, Darksteel Citadel for indestructible artifact land, Forest for Arbor Elf/Utopia Sprawl, and Island for High Tide/Foil/Daze.
- Role peers: Lórien Revealed Islandcycles for Island or Mystic Sanctuary to hand; Gretchen Titchwillow puts lands from hand onto battlefield.
- Failure modes: Sacrifice is an additional cost, so countering Crop Rotation still loses the land; cannot find nonland engine pieces.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong when Mystic Sanctuary rebuy or color fixing wins; risky against stack interaction and land-light hands.
#### Hidden Strings
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, two-target tap/untap sorcery with cipher.
- Role type: modal utility; engine piece; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: May tap or untap target permanent, then may tap or untap another target permanent; cipher can encode it on a creature to recast copies after combat damage to a player.
- Timing: Use main phase when two tap/untap choices generate mana, clear blockers, or set up a repeat cipher engine; encode only on a creature likely to connect safely.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{U}`; outputs up to two target permanent tap/untap choices, then optional exile encoded on a creature you control.
- Mode map: First and second target choices can each tap or untap; cipher aspect turns combat damage by the encoded creature into a free copy.
- Deck-specific job: Untaps each creature you control, reusing mana creatures, Gretchen Titchwillow, Viridian Longbow carriers, and creatures enchanted with Careful Cultivation, Freed from the Real, or Evanescent Intellect.
- Timing: Cast after tapping multiple creatures; avoid using it for only one creature unless that single untap wins or preserves survival.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{G}`; outputs untap of each creature you control.
- Partners / packages: Works with Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Pili-Pala, Llanowar Visionary, Careful Cultivation token, Gretchen Titchwillow, Galvanic Alchemist pair, and Viridian Longbow carrier.
- Role peers: Dramatic Reversal untaps nonland permanents for `{1}{U}`; Cerulean Wisps untaps one creature and draws; Tidal Bore and Twiddle untap one target.
- Failure modes: Does not untap lands or Arcane Signet; weak if creatures are summoning sick or have not tapped.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong in creature-engine builds; against sweepers, do not overcommit creatures just to make Vitalize larger unless the current turn is decisive.
- Deck-specific job: On entry, untaps up to five lands, creating mana-positive turns with enchanted lands, High Tide Islands, or lands that produce multiple mana.
- Timing: Cast when five lands include high-output targets or when a 2/3 flying blocker/attacker matters; protect if it is the bridge to a winning chain.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{4}{U}`; outputs 2/3 flying body and up to five land untaps.
- Partners / packages: Strong with High Tide, Dawn's Reflection, Overgrowth, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Grafted Growth, Nature's Embrace, Simic Growth Chamber, Fertile Ground, Wild Growth, and Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Role peers: Cloud of Faeries untaps two lands cheaper; Frantic Search untaps three lands while filtering; Snap untaps two lands after bouncing a creature.
- Failure modes: Five-mana spell can be stranded; if lands do not produce enough mana, it is only a medium flyer.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, force it with protection when it starts a winning turn; against aggro, 2/3 flyer can block but may arrive late.
#### Miscalculation
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, soft counter with cycling fallback.
- Role type: interaction-stack; modal utility; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell unless its controller pays `{2}`, or cycles for `{2}` when the tax counter is dead.
- Timing: Use counter mode while opponents are mana-constrained; cycle when opponents can easily pay or when finding a missing engine piece matters more than holding a weak counter.
- Inputs / outputs: Counter mode costs `{1}{U}`; cycling costs `{2}`, discards Miscalculation, and draws a card.
- Mode map: Counter mode interacts with any spell on the stack conditionally; cycling mode is card replacement and does not interact.
- Partners / packages: Protects early Gretchen Titchwillow, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, and Viridian Longbow; cycling fuels Krosan Restorer threshold.
- Role peers: Spell Pierce taxes noncreature spells by `{2}` for `{U}`; Daze taxes by `{1}`; Counterspell and Negate are harder counters in their classes.
- Failure modes: Opponent can pay `{2}`; cycling at the wrong time can leave no answer to a must-counter spell.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong early against combo/control; cycle more often in late midrange games or against creature decks where the stack target is not decisive.
#### Tamiyo's Safekeeping
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana permanent protection and small lifegain.
- Role type: protection/evasion; lifegain/stabilization.
- Deck-specific job: Gives target permanent you control hexproof and indestructible until end of turn and gains 2 life, protecting the exact permanent that makes the engine work.
- Timing: Hold for targeted removal, destroy effects, combat damage, or board states where 2 life changes survival; use proactively only if forcing a decisive turn.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{G}` and targets a permanent you control; outputs hexproof, indestructible, and 2 life.
- Role peers: Turn Aside counters a spell targeting your permanent; Counterspell, Dispel, Negate, and Spell Pierce protect on the stack.
- Failure modes: Does not stop exile, sacrifice, bounce without destroy, or non-targeting effects unless indestructible/hexproof is relevant; must target your permanent.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against removal-heavy and burn decks targeting creatures; 2 life matters against red pressure but should not justify wasting the protection mode.
#### Merchant Scroll
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, blue instant tutor.
- Role type: tutor/search.
- Deck-specific job: Searches for a blue instant card, reveals it, puts it into hand, and shuffles, turning two mana into the exact instant role the current board needs.
- Timing: Cast at sorcery speed when the needed instant is clear; avoid spending the turn tutoring if immediate board survival is required.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{U}`; outputs a revealed blue instant from library to hand.
- Partners / packages: Target map includes Counterspell for hard permission, Dispel for instant fights, Negate for noncreature spells, Arcane Denial for flexible permission, Snap for creature bounce plus land untap, Echoing Truth for nonland permanent bounce, Frantic Search for High Tide turns, High Tide for burst mana, Impulse for selection, Turn Aside for protection, Twiddle for tap/untap, Dream's Grip for tap/untap, Cerulean Wisps for untap cantrip, Tidal Bore for creature tap/untap, Foil for hard counter, Resculpt for artifact/creature exile, and Miscalculation for soft counter/cycling.
- Role peers: Drift of Phantasms, Step Through, Vedalken Aethermage, Crop Rotation, and Lórien Revealed search different card classes.
- Failure modes: Cannot find Freed from the Real, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, Gretchen Titchwillow, land Auras, or sideboard green cards.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, find Dispel, Counterspell, or Foil; against aggro, find Snap, Echoing Truth, Resculpt, or High Tide only if it wins the race.
#### Urban Utopia
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cantripping land Aura fixer.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; card selection; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a land, draws a card on entry, and gives the land “{T}: Add one mana of any color,” smoothing colors while replacing itself.
- Timing: Cast when a land can safely carry an Aura and card replacement matters; good early if colors are awkward.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{G}` and a land target; outputs one card on entry and an any-color tap ability for the enchanted land.
- Partners / packages: Works with Arbor Elf if on Forest, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Emerald Charm, and Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Role peers: Fertile Ground adds extra any-color mana instead of granting a new one-mana ability; Wild Growth and Utopia Sprawl are cheaper; Glittering Frost and Blighted Burgeoning add extra mana with other bonuses.
- Failure modes: Does not increase total mana as explosively as Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, or Market Festival unless untap sequencing needs color fixing.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Better against attrition because it replaces itself; still vulnerable to Serene Heart and enchantment removal.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants Forest, chooses a color as it enters, and adds one mana of that chosen color whenever enchanted Forest is tapped for mana.
- Timing: Best on turn one Forest, especially with Arbor Elf; choose the color that supports current hand requirements, often blue when Counterspell, Freed from the Real, or Gretchen Titchwillow needs help.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{G}` and requires a Forest target; outputs one extra chosen-color mana per tap of enchanted Forest.
- Role peers: Wild Growth is also one mana but adds `{G}`; Fertile Ground costs two and fixes any color; Overgrowth gives `{G}{G}`.
- Failure modes: Cannot enchant Island, Command Tower, Simic Growth Chamber, Opal Palace, Darksteel Citadel, or Mystic Sanctuary; wrong color choice can strand spells.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: One of the best acceleration starts; against land interaction, avoid stacking additional Auras on the same Forest unless the turn is decisive.
#### Arcane Signet
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, two-mana artifact fixer.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; role glue.
- Deck-specific job: Taps for one mana of any color in Gretchen Titchwillow's color identity, giving stable green or blue without relying on Aura targets.
- Timing: Cast early when colors are unstable or when a nonland mana source helps Dramatic Reversal; avoid tapping out if holding Spell Pierce, Dispel, or Turn Aside matters more.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}`; outputs green or blue mana.
- Partners / packages: Works with Dramatic Reversal, Merchant Scroll, Counterspell, Gretchen Titchwillow, Freed from the Real, land Auras that need green, and blue interaction.
- Role peers: Command Tower fixes as a land; Llanowar Visionary fixes green and draws; Careful Cultivation token produces green only.
- Failure modes: Does not get multiplied by Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, High Tide, or land Auras; vulnerable to artifact removal and Annul-like effects from opponents.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong keep enabler in color-awkward hands; against artifact hate, do not rely on it as the only blue or green source if alternatives exist.
#### Wild Growth
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana land Aura acceleration.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a land and adds an additional `{G}` whenever that land is tapped for mana, creating early acceleration and untap value.
- Timing: Cast early on a land that can be untapped or safely used; Forest is best with Arbor Elf, but any land can be enchanted if green output is useful.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{G}` and a land target; outputs one extra green mana per tap.
- Partners / packages: Works with Forest plus Arbor Elf, any land plus Voyaging Satyr or Krosan Restorer, and untap spells Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Emerald Charm, Hidden Strings, Frantic Search, or Peregrine Drake.
- Role peers: Utopia Sprawl is Forest-only but color-flexible; Fertile Ground costs more and fixes any color; Overgrowth is larger green output.
- Failure modes: Extra mana is green only, so it may not pay for Counterspell, Dispel, High Tide, Freed from the Real, or Gretchen's blue cost.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strongest turn-one accelerator; risky to stack with other Auras into visible land bounce or enchantment removal.
#### Fertile Ground
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, two-mana any-color land Aura.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Enchants a land and adds one mana of any color whenever that land is tapped for mana, supporting both green setup and blue interaction.
- Timing: Cast early when color smoothing or untap multiplication is needed; prefer a land that will be untapped repeatedly or protected.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{G}` and a land target; outputs one extra mana of any color per tap.
- Partners / packages: Works with Arbor Elf on Forest, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Emerald Charm, Frantic Search, Peregrine Drake, and Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Role peers: Glittering Frost and Blighted Burgeoning add one any-color mana for three mana with extra text; Urban Utopia draws a card but grants a tap ability; Wild Growth is cheaper but green-only.
- Failure modes: Two-mana setup can be slow if the land is removed before reuse; still vulnerable to Serene Heart.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Important in color-sensitive hands that need Counterspell and green Auras; protect the land if it is the only source of blue or green.
#### Negate
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, noncreature hard counter.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target noncreature spell, protecting engines from removal, opposing counters, artifacts, enchantments, sweepers, or combo spells on the stack.
- Timing: Hold for noncreature spells that stop your active plan or win the game; let low-impact noncreature value resolve if permission is needed for a later fight.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{U}`; outputs hard counter against target noncreature spell.
- Partners / packages: Protects Freed from the Real, Viridian Longbow, High Tide, Gretchen Titchwillow, enchanted lands, Galvanic Alchemist, and Wildheart Invoker from noncreature disruption.
- Role peers: Counterspell hits any spell for `{U}{U}`; Spell Pierce is cheaper but conditional; Dispel is narrower for instants; Annul post-board hits artifact or enchantment spells only.
- Failure modes: Cannot counter creature spells or abilities; requires a spell on the stack.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against control, combo, artifacts, enchantments, and removal-heavy decks; weak against creature-only pressure unless their key effects are noncreature.
#### Darksteel Citadel
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, indestructible artifact land and colorless mana resource.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine fuel/material.
- Deck-specific job: Provides `{C}` from an indestructible artifact land, giving a durable Crop Rotation target and artifact count/body relevance for Resculpt edge cases.
- Timing: Play when colored mana is already stable; avoid opening hands where Darksteel Citadel is the only mana source for colored spells.
- Inputs / outputs: Uses land drop; outputs colorless mana and an indestructible artifact land permanent.
- Partners / packages: Crop Rotation can find it; Resculpt can target it in emergency to create a 4/4 blue and red Elemental for its controller, though that is rarely primary.
- Role peers: Opal Palace also provides colorless but can filter; Command Tower provides colored mana; Simic Growth Chamber provides both colors but enters tapped.
- Failure modes: Does not cast Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Ponder, Brainstorm, Counterspell, Arbor Elf, or Gretchen Titchwillow by itself.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Useful against land destruction that says destroy; poor against fast starts if it prevents early green or blue development.
#### Frantic Search
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, instant draw-discard with land untap burst.
- Role type: card selection; discard outlet; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Draws two, discards two, then untaps up to three lands, becoming mana-positive with High Tide or enchanted lands while filtering toward payoff/protection.
- Timing: Cast after tapping lands, especially Islands under High Tide or lands with Dawn's Reflection, Overgrowth, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Grafted Growth, Nature's Embrace, Fertile Ground, or Wild Growth.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{2}{U}`; outputs two drawn cards, two discarded cards, and up to three land untaps.
- Partners / packages: Strong with High Tide, Mystic Sanctuary recursion, Deep Analysis discard, Krosan Restorer threshold, and Merchant Scroll because it is a blue instant.
- Role peers: Tolarian Winds resets the whole hand; Brainstorm and Impulse filter without discarding; Snap and Peregrine Drake also untap lands.
- Failure modes: Discarding the only payoff, only protection, or only land drop can fizzle the turn; without profitable lands to untap, it is tempo-neutral or worse.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in combo turns; against graveyard hate, remember discarded Deep Analysis or threshold fuel may not remain available.
#### High Tide
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, Island burst-mana engine.
- Role type: combo enabler; mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Until end of turn, whenever any player taps an Island for mana, that player adds an additional `{U}`, turning Island and Mystic Sanctuary into large blue mana sources.
- Timing: Cast only when enough Islands and untap effects make a material turn; avoid firing it as a small ritual unless it enables protected Gretchen Titchwillow, Frantic Search, Peregrine Drake, or lethal payoff.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}`; outputs extra blue from each Island tapped for mana that turn.
- Partners / packages: Strong with Island, Mystic Sanctuary, Frantic Search, Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, Snap, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Hidden Strings, Vizier of Tumbling Sands cycling, and Gretchen Titchwillow.
- Role peers: Land Auras create persistent mana; High Tide creates one explosive turn.
- Failure modes: Benefits opponents' Islands too; weak with low Island count or without card flow/payoff; does not boost Forest, Command Tower, Simic Growth Chamber, Opal Palace, or Darksteel Citadel.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, protect the first key spell after High Tide; against aggro, start only if the turn stabilizes or wins.
#### Cloud of Faeries
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, cheap flying land-untap creature with cycling.
- Role type: engine piece; modal utility; threat/clock.
- Deck-specific job: Enters and untaps up to two lands, becoming mana-positive with enchanted lands or High Tide Islands; cycling is fallback card replacement.
- Timing: Cast when untapping two lands creates mana or tempo; cycle for `{2}` when a 1/1 flyer and land untap trigger are not useful.
- Inputs / outputs: Cast costs `{1}{U}` for a 1/1 flyer and up to two land untaps; cycling costs `{2}`, discards Cloud of Faeries, and draws a card.
- Mode map: Creature mode gives body plus land untaps; cycling mode replaces the card and fuels graveyard count but gives no body or untap.
- Partners / packages: Strong with High Tide, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Fertile Ground, Wild Growth, Sheltered Aerie, and Viridian Longbow as an evasive carrier.
- Role peers: Peregrine Drake untaps up to five lands; Frantic Search untaps three lands and filters; Snap untaps two lands after bounce.
- Failure modes: 1/1 body is fragile; cycling sacrifices an engine creature; untapping lands after a low-output cast may not advance the combo.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Blocks or pressures flyers lightly; preserve it for burst turns when High Tide or enchanted lands are visible.
#### Mystic Sanctuary
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, Island utility land and spell recursion piece.
- Role type: recursion; mana/fixing/ramp.
- Deck-specific job: Taps for `{U}` as an Island, enters tapped unless you control three or more other Islands, and when it enters untapped may put target instant or sorcery from your graveyard on top of your library.
- Timing: Sequence after three other Islands when the topdeck target matters; play tapped earlier only if blue mana is needed and recursion is not realistic.
- Inputs / outputs: Uses land drop; outputs blue mana and possible instant/sorcery topdeck recursion on untapped entry.
- Partners / packages: Recurs Counterspell, Dispel, High Tide, Frantic Search, Snap, Echoing Truth, Impulse, Crop Rotation, Ponder, Brainstorm, Deep Analysis, Lórien Revealed, Merchant Scroll, or Hidden Strings.
- Role peers: Crop Rotation can find Mystic Sanctuary onto the battlefield; Lórien Revealed Islandcycling can find it to hand.
- Failure modes: Needs three or more other Islands to enter untapped; Relic of Progenitus can exile graveyards and remove targets; topdeck recursion is not immediate draw without a draw effect.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent in control mirrors and long games; against fast aggro, tapped entry can cost too much tempo.
#### Arcane Denial
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, flexible counter with delayed card draw.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion; card selection.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target spell, lets that spell's controller draw up to two cards at the next upkeep, and draws you one card at the next upkeep.
- Timing: Use when the target spell must not resolve and the extra cards are acceptable; prefer narrower counters first if their restrictions fit.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{U}`; outputs counter target spell, delayed opponent optional draw up to two, and delayed draw one for you.
- Partners / packages: Protects Gretchen Titchwillow, Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, High Tide, and enchanted lands.
- Role peers: Counterspell has no card drawback but costs `{U}{U}`; Negate and Dispel are narrower; Miscalculation and Daze are conditional.
- Failure modes: Giving the opponent cards can reload removal or combo; delayed draw does not help the current stack fight.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong against must-answer commanders and combo spells; worse against grindy control if a less generous answer is available.
#### Dispel
- Deck role: Main deck, 1 copy, one-mana instant-only counter.
- Role type: interaction-stack; protection/evasion.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target instant spell, efficiently winning stack fights over removal, countermagic, burn, bounce, or protection during a combo turn.
- Timing: Hold for instant-speed interaction that targets the engine or decides the race; do not waste on a low-impact instant if the opponent can still break the payoff.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against blue control, red burn instants, and instant-speed removal; weak against creature-heavy opponents without instant interaction.
#### Forest
- Deck role: Main deck, 13 copies, basic green mana base and key Aura target.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Provides `{G}` and is the required target for Utopia Sprawl and Arbor Elf, making Forest the deck's most important early engine land.
- Timing: Lead on Forest when the hand contains Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, or other green setup; preserve at least one Forest for future Arbor Elf lines when possible.
- Inputs / outputs: Uses land drop; outputs green mana and Forest subtype.
- Role peers: Island is the blue basic for High Tide and counters; Command Tower fixes both colors but lacks Forest subtype.
- Failure modes: Forest alone does not cast Ponder, Brainstorm, Counterspell, High Tide, Dispel, or blue untap spells.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against tempo, avoid putting every Aura on one Forest unless immediate mana generation or protection makes the risk worthwhile.
#### Island
- Deck role: Main deck, 17 copies, basic blue mana base and High Tide fuel.
- Role type: mana/fixing/ramp; engine piece.
- Deck-specific job: Provides `{U}`, fuels High Tide, pays blue interaction, and can be returned for Daze, Foil's Island-card cost, and Tidal Bore's alternate cost.
- Timing: Prioritize Island when holding Ponder, Brainstorm, Counterspell, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Merchant Scroll, High Tide, or blue untap chains; maintain enough Islands for Mystic Sanctuary and High Tide turns.
- Inputs / outputs: Uses land drop; outputs blue mana and Island subtype.
- Partners / packages: Works with High Tide, Frantic Search, Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, Snap, Mystic Sanctuary, Lórien Revealed Islandcycling, Foil, Daze, Tidal Bore, and Counterspell.
- Role peers: Mystic Sanctuary is also an Island with recursion text; Command Tower fixes blue but is not an Island.
- Failure modes: Island alone does not cast Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Return to Nature, Weather the Storm, Scattershot Archer, Spore Frog, Relic of Progenitus, Gleeful Sabotage, or Serene Heart.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Against control, Island density keeps permission live; against aggro, too many Islands without green setup can slow the engine.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Either counters target spell if it's red or destroys target permanent if it's red, answering red removal, red commanders, red burn, or red engine permanents.
- Timing: Bring in only when red spells or red permanents are a confirmed axis; hold for the red card that kills Gretchen Titchwillow, breaks a key untapper, or ends the game.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}`; outputs either conditional counter or conditional permanent destruction based on red color.
- Mode map: Counter mode targets a spell and counters it if it is red; destroy mode targets a permanent and destroys it if it is red.
- Partners / packages: Protects Gretchen Titchwillow, Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Pili-Pala, Viridian Longbow carrier, Freed from the Real line, or Wildheart Invoker from red interaction.
- Role peers: Blue Elemental Blast is similar but says target red spell/permanent; Dispel, Spell Pierce, Negate, and Counterspell cover different stack classes.
- Failure modes: Dead against nonred cards; destroy mode does not exile and does not answer nonred artifacts or enchantments.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best versus red burn, red tempo, and red removal-heavy commanders.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-stack; interaction-removal; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Chooses to counter target red spell or destroy target red permanent, giving a clean one-mana answer to red pressure and red disruption.
- Timing: Board in when red cards are public and important; keep open during turns where a red instant or red permanent would stop the combo or kill you.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}`; outputs either counter of target red spell or destruction of target red permanent.
- Mode map: Counter mode requires a target red spell on the stack; destroy mode requires a target red permanent on the battlefield.
- Partners / packages: Defends Gretchen Titchwillow, Freed from the Real carrier, Galvanic Alchemist, Krosan Restorer, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, and enchanted lands from red interaction.
- Role peers: Hydroblast is the closest peer with “if it's red” wording; Counterspell and Negate are broader but cost more or have different restrictions.
- Failure modes: Completely narrow outside red matchups; does not answer colorless artifacts, nonred enchantments, or abilities.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent against red burn or red commanders; combine with Weather the Storm when both stack interaction and life total matter.
- Deck-specific job: Counters target artifact or enchantment spell before it resolves, stopping prison pieces, equipment, opposing Auras, or artifact/enchantment engines at the cheapest rate.
- Timing: Bring in only when artifact or enchantment spells matter; hold one blue when the opponent is likely to cast the permanent that beats your engine.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{U}`; outputs counter of target artifact or enchantment spell on the stack.
- Partners / packages: Protects Gretchen Titchwillow, enchanted lands, Freed from the Real, Viridian Longbow, and High Tide turns from stack-visible artifact/enchantment hate.
- Role peers: Return to Nature and Gleeful Sabotage answer resolved artifacts/enchantments; Serene Heart is the broad Aura sweeper; Negate counters broader noncreature spells.
- Failure modes: Cannot answer resolved permanents, creatures unless they are artifact/enchantment spells, or instants/sorceries.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best versus artifact commanders, Aura decks, equipment plans, and enchantment lock pieces shown in public information.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; modal utility; hate piece; interaction-removal.
- Deck-specific job: Chooses to destroy target artifact, destroy target enchantment, or exile target card from a graveyard.
- Timing: Bring in when a resolved artifact, resolved enchantment, or specific graveyard card is likely to matter; hold until the target is real, not speculative.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{G}`; outputs one targeted artifact destruction, enchantment destruction, or graveyard-card exile.
- Partners / packages: Covers permanents that Annul missed, graveyard resources that Relic of Progenitus also pressures, and opposing Auras when Serene Heart would hurt your own Aura engine.
- Role peers: Gleeful Sabotage is sorcery artifact/enchantment destruction with conspire; Serene Heart is the broad Aura sweeper; Relic of Progenitus attacks graveyards repeatedly or broadly.
- Failure modes: One-for-one answer can be too small against multiple permanents; graveyard mode must target a card before costs like flashback, delve, or escape have already been paid.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus artifact/enchantment engines, Aura commanders, and graveyard decks with one decisive card.
#### Weather the Storm
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, storm lifegain against burn and spell-chain pressure.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; lifegain/stabilization.
- Deck-specific job: Gains 3 life, then storm copies it for each spell cast before it that turn, buying a turn against burn, storm-like sequences, or high-spell-count aggro.
- Timing: Bring in when life total is the bottleneck; cast after the opponent or you have increased storm count, but before damage or lethal resolution makes the life irrelevant.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{G}`; outputs 3 life per original/copy created by storm count.
- Partners / packages: Pairs with Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast against red burn; buys time for Gretchen Titchwillow, High Tide, Peregrine Drake, Wildheart Invoker, or Viridian Longbow finishes.
- Role peers: Spore Frog prevents combat damage for a turn; Tamiyo's Safekeeping gains only 2 life while protecting a permanent.
- Failure modes: Does not affect board state; weak against one large commander hit or poison-like nonlife axes if present.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best when multiple spells are cast before lethal burn or combat; poor versus slow control with little pressure.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-sweeper; hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Taps to deal 1 damage to each creature with flying, pressuring flying tokens, small evasive commanders, and repeated flyer chip damage.
- Timing: Bring in when flying creatures are the real clock; deploy early enough to activate before damage snowballs.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{G}`; tap ability outputs 1 damage to each creature with flying, including your own Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, Pili-Pala, Drift of Phantasms, Vedalken Aethermage if granted flying by other effects, or Oboro Breezecaller if they have flying as printed.
- Partners / packages: Buys time for Gretchen Titchwillow, land Auras, High Tide, Viridian Longbow, and Wildheart Invoker by controlling small flyers.
- Role peers: Spore Frog prevents one full combat step; Weather the Storm offsets damage with life; Echoing Truth can bounce same-name flyer tokens.
- Failure modes: Damages your own flying creatures; does not kill flyers with toughness above damage already marked plus 1.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus flying token swarms and 1-toughness evasive pressure; weak versus ground aggro and large flyers.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; lifegain/stabilization.
- Deck-specific job: Sacrifices itself to prevent all combat damage that would be dealt this turn, buying the exact untap step needed for a combo or stabilization turn.
- Timing: Bring in against creature decks where one combat step determines survival; sacrifice only when preventing damage changes the game.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{G}` for a 1/1; activation sacrifices Spore Frog and prevents all combat damage for the turn.
- Partners / packages: Buys time for Gretchen Titchwillow activations, High Tide, Peregrine Drake, Wildheart Invoker, Viridian Longbow, or enchanted-land plus Krosan Restorer/Voyaging Satyr setup.
- Role peers: Weather the Storm gains life against spell chains; Scattershot Archer repeatedly damages flyers; Echoing Truth and Snap remove specific attackers temporarily.
- Failure modes: Does not stop noncombat damage, life loss, mill, or postcombat effects; sacrificing too early may waste the only fog turn.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Excellent versus go-wide or single huge combat steps; poor versus burn-heavy decks unless combat damage is also central.
#### Relic of Progenitus
- Deck role: Sideboard, 1 copy, artifact graveyard hate with card replacement.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; hate piece; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Taps to make target player exile a card from their graveyard, or pays `{1}` and exiles Relic of Progenitus to exile all graveyards and draw a card.
- Timing: Bring in when graveyards are a public engine; use tap ability early to pressure flashback, recursion, and threshold setup before payoff windows, and save full exile for the turn a broad reset is worth losing your own Deep Analysis, Mystic Sanctuary, or Krosan Restorer threshold value.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}`; tap ability targets a player, and that player chooses and exiles a card from their graveyard; sacrifice ability costs `{1}` and Relic exile, exiles all graveyards, then draws a card.
- Mode map: Targeted pressure mode is repeatable but that player chooses which graveyard card is exiled; full-exile mode is broad, one-shot, and replaces itself.
- Partners / packages: Conflicts with your Deep Analysis, Mystic Sanctuary, and Krosan Restorer threshold plans, so activate only when opponent graveyard value is more important.
- Role peers: Return to Nature exiles one target card from a graveyard; Relic handles all graveyards.
- Failure modes: Full exile can hurt your own recovery; tap ability does not let you choose the exact card, so do not treat it as precise hate against a single flashback or recursion target.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus graveyard recursion, flashback, reanimation, threshold, and escape-like plans before costs are paid.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-removal; modal utility.
- Deck-specific job: Destroys target artifact or enchantment, and conspire can copy it by tapping two untapped creatures you control that share green with it.
- Timing: Bring in against artifact or enchantment engines; cast when sorcery timing is safe and one or two targets matter.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{G}`; optional conspire taps two untapped green creatures you control as you cast to copy the spell and choose a new target for the copy.
- Mode map: Normal cast destroys one target artifact or enchantment; conspired cast can destroy a second artifact or enchantment if you can tap two green creatures such as Gretchen Titchwillow, Arbor Elf, Llanowar Visionary, Wildheart Invoker, Scattershot Archer, Spore Frog, or Careful Cultivation's Human Monk token.
- Partners / packages: Complements Annul for stack answers, Return to Nature for instant flexibility, and Serene Heart for Aura-heavy boards.
- Role peers: Return to Nature is instant and has graveyard mode; Annul counters before resolution; Serene Heart is the broad Aura sweeper.
- Failure modes: Sorcery speed can be too slow; tapping green creatures may remove blockers or mana sources; conspire requires two untapped green creatures.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Strong versus multiple artifacts/enchantments; weak versus spell-based combo or creature decks without targets.
- Role type: sideboard bullet; interaction-sweeper; hate piece.
- Deck-specific job: Destroys each Aura on the battlefield, acting as a reset against Aura Voltron, opposing land-Aura engines, or enchantment stacks.
- Timing: Bring in only when opposing Auras are a central axis; cast when destroying opposing Auras is worth losing your own Aura infrastructure.
- Inputs / outputs: Costs `{1}{G}`; outputs destruction of each Aura on the battlefield.
- Partners / packages: Can clear opposing Auras while also destroying your Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, Urban Utopia, Careful Cultivation, Freed from the Real, Evanescent Intellect, and Imprisoned in the Moon.
- Role peers: Return to Nature destroys one target enchantment; Gleeful Sabotage destroys target artifact or enchantment; Annul counters artifact or enchantment spells on the stack.
- Failure modes: Symmetrical effect can dismantle your mana engine or release a permanent locked by Imprisoned in the Moon.
- Matchup / visibility hooks: Best when the opponent has committed more important Auras than you; poor when your current plan depends on land Auras or Freed from the Real surviving.
- Priority: Stop effects that break the mana engine before stopping normal pressure. Counter, protect against, or bounce effects aimed at the enchanted land, the paired untapper, Gretchen Titchwillow, Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Pili-Pala, Viridian Longbow, or Wildheart Invoker when that permanent is part of the current kill or draw engine.
- Counter first: Use Turn Aside or Tamiyo's Safekeeping on targeted removal when the target is a committed engine permanent; use Dispel, Spell Pierce, Miscalculation, Arcane Denial, Negate, or Counterspell on stack interaction that stops a combo turn, a lethal attack, or an essential protection spell. Spend Daze early only when the opponent cannot easily pay; do not hold Daze as protection after the table has spare mana unless Veles shows a legal tempo line that still matters.
- Counter later: Let low-impact creatures, slow value spells, and nonlethal board development resolve when your hand needs mana aura, untapper, or payoff assembly. Save hard permission for removal, counterspells, edicts that hit the only untapper, prison pieces that shut off activated abilities, or effects that remove the commander during a commitment turn.
- Bounce first: Use Echoing Truth or Snap on hate permanents, lethal attackers, blockers preventing a Wildheart Invoker kill, or a permanent that stops the engine from operating. Snap is preferred when untapping lands changes the turn; Echoing Truth is preferred against repeated token names or multiple same-name permanents. Card text check required before using Echoing Truth as protection for your own permanent.
- Exile or lock first: Use Resculpt or Imprisoned in the Moon on a permanent that will beat the current engine if left in play, not on the first medium creature. Prioritize commanders, activated-ability hate, evasive lethal threats, or a permanent that prevents targeting, untapping, casting, or attacking. Treat Resculpt as a tempo-negative answer if the resulting body matters; use it when the answered permanent is worse than the replacement.
- Discard decisions: This deck has no registered main-deck hand-discard attack, so do not invent discard disruption. For self-discard from Foil, Tolarian Winds, or similar legal prompts, discard redundant lands, excess auras without an untapper, dead narrow counters, or duplicate category pieces before discarding the only payoff, only protection spell, only blue source, or only untapper. Card text check required for exact additional costs before automating Foil decisions.
- Bait cards: Use Arcane Signet, Llanowar Visionary, Ponder, Impulse, Urban Utopia, or a noncritical aura to draw out soft interaction before exposing Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Pili-Pala, Viridian Longbow, or a large enchanted-land commitment. Do not bait with the only functional untapper when the hand cannot rebuild.
- Ignore list: Ignore small chip damage, tapped low-power blockers, and value permanents that do not shorten the clock or interfere with mana, targeting, activated abilities, graveyards, or the stack. Against fast creature decks, the ignore threshold drops sharply; spend bounce or blockers when visible attacks threaten to force a defensive combo turn before protection is ready.
- Archetype shift: Against control, preserve protection and force action on the opponent's end step when legal. Against aggro, trade tempo for life and buy one more untap step. Against artifact or enchantment engines, prioritize the permanent that disables your engine or creates inevitability; exact sideboard answers belong in Sideboard Map.
- Attack rule: Treat most creatures as engine material before damage sources. Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Krosan Restorer, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Pili-Pala, Galvanic Alchemist, Oboro Breezecaller, Cloud of Faeries, and Peregrine Drake should attack only when damage is free, a Wildheart Invoker pump line is active, or the game will end before their mana role matters.
- Block rule: Preserve the best untapper unless life total, commander safety, or lethal pressure demands a trade. Chump with low-future-value bodies before sacrificing an active untapper paired with Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Fertile Ground, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, or Careful Cultivation.
- Defensive bodies: Use Drift of Phantasms and Llanowar Visionary as blockers more freely after their tutor or card-flow role is no longer needed. Use Gretchen Titchwillow as a blocker only when commander recast cost and lost activation access are less important than survival; do not trade the commander for small damage while a draw or land-drop engine remains relevant.
- Trade threshold: Above a comfortable life total, decline trades that reduce combo density; below a short-clock threshold, block to preserve one or two more draw steps even if a creature has engine text. When the opponent can present lethal next combat, Veles should value survival over future engine quality unless a visible legal line wins this turn.
- Protection in combat: Use Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Turn Aside, counters, or bounce during combat only when the protected creature is part of the current engine, blocks lethal damage, or enables a decisive follow-up. Do not spend protection to save a replaceable blocker if the same spell is needed to force through Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, or Viridian Longbow.
- Wildheart Invoker plan: When large mana is already available, combat can become the payoff. Before attacking, check visible blockers, removal mana, and whether keeping an untapper untapped produces more damage after blocks. Do not send essential mana creatures into trades before confirming the pump action, target, and post-combat survival line are legal.
- Viridian Longbow plan: Treat equipped pingers as combo outlets, not normal attackers. If Viridian Longbow plus repeated untaps is visible, avoid combat lines that tap or expose the equipped creature unless the attack itself wins. Card text check required for exact equip and damage activation details before deterministic execution.
- Archetype adjustment: Against aggro, block earlier and use Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, or Imprisoned in the Moon to prevent lethal tempo swings. Against control, avoid unnecessary attacks into open removal when the creature is a combo piece. Against creature-light combo, attack with spare bodies only when it does not reduce mana, protection, or tutor access.
- Selection before commitment: Use Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Frantic Search, Gretchen Titchwillow, Deep Analysis, and Lórien Revealed to find missing categories before committing the fragile engine. Prioritize, in order, a functional land or color source, a land aura or mana doubler, an untapper, protection, then a payoff such as Viridian Longbow or Wildheart Invoker.
- Land-drop timing: Cast Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, or cycle-type selection before playing a land when the land choice can change. Play the land first when mana is required to hold up Spell Pierce, Dispel, Daze, Miscalculation, Counterspell, Turn Aside, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping after the selection spell.
- Brainstorm discipline: Use Brainstorm strongest with a legal shuffle or library-changing effect from Crop Rotation, Merchant Scroll, Drift of Phantasms, Vedalken Aethermage, Step Through, or Lórien Revealed. Without a shuffle effect, put back expensive redundant pieces, extra lands after the current land drop is secured, or combo pieces that are not castable soon.
- Ponder discipline: Keep a Ponder pile when it contains immediate mana plus an engine category. Shuffle when the visible pile has only reactive spells, redundant auras without an untapper, payoffs without mana, or lands that do not fix current colors.
- Impulse discipline: Take the card that completes the nearest legal engine, not the most powerful abstract card. If the board already has an enchanted land, take Voyaging Satyr, Arbor Elf, Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Galvanic Alchemist, or Freed from the Real over generic value.
- Transmute and wizard search: Use Drift of Phantasms, Vedalken Aethermage, and Step Through as role tutors when legal. Search for the missing deterministic category: Freed from the Real or Galvanic Alchemist when an eligible creature and mana source are ready; Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, or other untapper when the land aura plan is assembled; protection only when the engine is already in hand and the opponent represents interaction. Card text check required for each transmute or wizardcycling candidate set before automation.
- Merchant Scroll targets: Use Merchant Scroll to get protection or interaction when a combo turn is approaching, especially Counterspell, Dispel, Negate, Arcane Denial, Snap, Echoing Truth, or Dramatic Reversal if legal and tactically relevant. Do not tutor a reactive spell over a missing engine piece unless the visible clock or known interaction makes protection mandatory.
- Crop Rotation targets: Use Crop Rotation for Mystic Sanctuary when a spell in graveyard is worth rebuilding around and the required Island condition is legal. Use it for Simic Growth Chamber, Command Tower, Opal Palace, Darksteel Citadel, Forest, or Island only when the visible mana problem or landfall-like untap plan justifies sacrificing a land. Card text check required before assuming Mystic Sanctuary can place the chosen card on top.
- Wheel and flashback discipline: Use Tolarian Winds only when the hand is clogged with redundant mana, dead interaction, or uncastable payoffs and the deck needs a fresh engine mix. Use Deep Analysis when life and tempo allow card volume; delay it when holding up permission or protecting an engine matters more.
- Priority default: Pass priority when no legal action improves mana, protection, selection, board safety, or combo progress. Do not fire Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Cerulean Wisps, Vitalize, Dramatic Reversal, Hidden Strings, or Snap just because they are legal; hold untap effects for mana-positive turns, protection from tap effects, or a declared combo line.
- Commitment windows: Start a major engine turn only after checking visible opposing mana, known revealed cards, current clock, protection in hand, and whether waiting gives a better protected line. High Tide, Frantic Search, Peregrine Drake, Cloud of Faeries, Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, and Viridian Longbow are commitment cards; once exposed, use priority to protect the line instead of drifting into value plays.
- Counterspell hierarchy: Counter removal or stack interaction that breaks the active engine before countering ordinary threats. Use Dispel, Spell Pierce, Daze, Miscalculation, Negate, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, and Foil according to visible legality and payment windows; preserve hard permission when a soft counter is unlikely to work.
- Protection hierarchy: Use Turn Aside or Tamiyo's Safekeeping when a targeted effect threatens Gretchen Titchwillow, an enchanted land, a critical untapper, Viridian Longbow carrier, or a payoff creature during a commitment turn. Do not protect a replaceable body if the same protection is needed for the current combo or survival line.
- Bounce and removal timing: Use Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, and Imprisoned in the Moon at the latest safe window when waiting may gain information, unless the permanent already prevents the engine, creates lethal combat, or invalidates a spell on the stack. Prefer Snap when the untap clause creates mana or tempo; prefer Echoing Truth for repeated names or tokens when legal.
- Activated ability timing: Activate Gretchen Titchwillow on end step or when floating mana would otherwise be wasted, unless the land-put ability changes the current turn. Use Viridian Longbow activations as stack-visible removal or deterministic payoff only after checking equip status, summoning sickness, untap availability, and legal targets. Card text check required for exact activation and equip constraints.
- Untap-spell timing: Cast Cerulean Wisps, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Vitalize, Dramatic Reversal, and Hidden Strings when they generate net mana, save a key permanent from a tap effect, or unlock a lethal or protective sequence. If an untap spell does not change available mana, combat, or stack outcome, keep it for a later engine window.
- Graveyard and recursion timing: Treat Mystic Sanctuary, Deep Analysis, and flashback-like or graveyard-recursive lines as public resources. Before using graveyard value, check whether the opponent has visible graveyard interaction and whether holding mana for Counterspell, Dispel, or Negate is more important than drawing extra cards.
- Let-resolve rule: Let low-impact creatures, small card draw, and non-engine permanents resolve when answering them would leave the deck unable to protect Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, High Tide, Viridian Longbow, or Gretchen Titchwillow. Spend stack interaction only when the resolving spell changes the race, breaks the engine, or stops the next legal combo attempt.
- Sideboard principle: Add narrow cards only when they answer the opponent's visible axis or strongly predicted commander-family archetype axis better than a maindeck flexible spell. Gretchen pEDH wins by assembling mana-positive land or creature untap engines, protecting them, then converting mana into Gretchen Titchwillow, Wildheart Invoker, Viridian Longbow, or repeated card flow, so sideboarding must not dilute both mana development and protection at once.
- Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast are the cleanest upgrades against red commanders, red removal, burn-heavy pressure, and red combo interaction. Bring them when red spells can kill Gretchen Titchwillow, Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Krosan Restorer, Pili-Pala, or a Viridian Longbow carrier, or when a red permanent creates a clock that forces the combo turn too early. They are weak against nonred boards, colorless artifact engines, and creature decks whose important threats are not red.
- Weather the Storm is for burn, storm-like spell chains, and fast pressure where life total is the limiting resource. It is at its best when the opponent casts multiple spells before damage or tries to finish with noncombat reach. It is weak against slow control and against creature decks that win with one large commander hit rather than spell volume.
- Annul is strongest when the opponent's early artifact or enchantment matters on the stack and the deck can hold one blue mana without stalling setup. Return to Nature and Gleeful Sabotage are better when permanents have already resolved or the opponent presents multiple artifact or enchantment engines. Bring these cards against artifact commanders, Aura engines, equipment plans, graveyard engines supported by artifacts, and prison pieces that stop activated abilities, untapping, or targeting. They are weak against spell-heavy control when the opponent can ignore permanents and fight on stack timing.
- Serene Heart is a high-impact but symmetrical tool against Aura-stacked commanders, enchantment-voltron boards, and opposing land-aura engines. Use it only when destroying multiple opposing Auras is worth risking your own Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Urban Utopia, Careful Cultivation, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, Imprisoned in the Moon, or Freed from the Real. It is bad when your own current plan depends on Auras staying attached and the opponent has few Auras.
- Relic of Progenitus is for recursive commanders, graveyard combo, flashback engines, dredge-like pressure, and decks that turn the graveyard into a second hand. Bring it when the opponent's public graveyard or commander text makes graveyard resources central. Reduce reliance on Mystic Sanctuary, Deep Analysis flashback, and graveyard rebuild lines while Relic of Progenitus is active, because your own graveyard may also be consumed. It is bad when the opponent's graveyard is incidental and your own recovery plan needs the graveyard.
- Spore Frog is for creature decks where one prevented combat step buys the combo turn or protects life after tapping mana for setup. Scattershot Archer is for fliers, flying token swarms, and small evasive commanders that pressure life while ground blockers are irrelevant. These cards are weak against slow control unless their exact text answers a visible board state.
Red Burn Or Red Tempo
Side in: Hydroblast; Blue Elemental Blast; Weather the Storm
- Plan rule: Bring the red answers when red spells are the opponent's damage engine or their removal is likely to break your first engine attempt. Reduce slow self-mill, high-variance hand churn, and expensive setup before reducing protection or land-aura density. Preserve Dispel, Spell Pierce, Daze, Miscalculation, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Foil, Turn Aside, and Tamiyo's Safekeeping because the matchup often turns on whether Gretchen Titchwillow or an untapper survives one stack exchange.
Artifact Or Enchantment Engine
Side in: Annul; Return to Nature; Gleeful Sabotage
- Plan rule: Bring artifact and enchantment answers when the opponent's commander, mana engine, equipment, or lock piece must be answered before you can combo. Reduce slow win-more or hand-churn cards before reducing untappers, Auras, or permission. Keep Echoing Truth, Resculpt, Imprisoned in the Moon, and Snap as flexible answers unless the opponent has very few legal targets for them.
- Plan rule: Use Serene Heart as a reset button only when the opponent's Aura investment is larger than yours or when you can rebuild faster with hand resources. Sequence your own Auras with awareness that Serene Heart may be needed later; avoid overcommitting Dawn's Reflection, Overgrowth, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Nature's Embrace, and Freed from the Real into your own planned reset unless the combo turn is immediate.
Graveyard Recursion Or Graveyard Combo
Side in: Relic of Progenitus; Return to Nature
Cut: Evanescent Intellect; Tolarian Winds
- Plan rule: Add graveyard control when the opponent's public graveyard creates card advantage, combo material, or recurring threats. Use Relic of Progenitus before the opponent gets a decisive graveyard window, but do not sacrifice your own Mystic Sanctuary or Deep Analysis line without checking whether the graveyard hate is actually needed that turn. Return to Nature is preferred over narrow stack interaction when a single graveyard card or artifact or enchantment permanent is the visible problem.
Fliers Or Evasive Creature Pressure
Side in: Scattershot Archer; Spore Frog; Weather the Storm
- Plan rule: Add creature-stall cards when life total, not cards in hand, is the resource under attack. Scattershot Archer is best when repeated one-damage sweeps matter against flying creatures; Spore Frog is best when one combat step determines whether you untap into Gretchen Titchwillow activation, High Tide, Peregrine Drake, or an aura-untap sequence. Weather the Storm is best when the opponent uses multiple spells per turn or burn reach.
Blue Control With Artifact Or Enchantment Hooks
Side in: Annul; Return to Nature
Cut: Evanescent Intellect; Wildheart Invoker
- Plan rule: Use the permanent answers only if the opponent has artifacts, enchantments, or graveyard cards that matter. The main fight remains Dispel, Spell Pierce, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Miscalculation, Foil, Daze, Turn Aside, and Tamiyo's Safekeeping. Do not dilute the deck with creature-combat cards against a control opponent that is not pressuring combat.
- Sideboard restraint: Do not add all ten sideboard cards just because the opponent is unknown. A two-card or three-card plan is usually safer than broad dilution; the maindeck needs land enchantments, untappers, selection, permission, and payoffs in the right ratios. When uncertain, add the most text-relevant answer to the opponent's commander or visible permanents and keep the primary combo shell intact.
- Aggro: Treat creature aggression as a clock-management matchup, not a pure race. Keep hands that produce green and blue early, deploy Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Urban Utopia, Arcane Signet, Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, or Gretchen Titchwillow quickly, and spend Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, or Imprisoned in the Moon when the visible attacker changes your combo-turn count. Role cards are Spore Frog, Weather the Storm, and Scattershot Archer when combat damage or evasive damage is the visible constraint. Reduce emphasis on Evanescent Intellect, Tolarian Winds, Lórien Revealed, or Wildheart Invoker when they are slower than stabilizing and protecting an untap engine.
- Control: Make control answer your mana engine repeatedly before committing the payoff. Prioritize land drops, Gretchen Titchwillow activations, Mystic Sanctuary loops when legal, and low-risk selection from Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Deep Analysis, Merchant Scroll, Drift of Phantasms, Vedalken Aethermage, and Step Through. Hold Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Viridian Longbow, Peregrine Drake, or Pili-Pala until you can protect the commitment with Dispel, Spell Pierce, Miscalculation, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Foil, Daze, Turn Aside, or Tamiyo's Safekeeping. Annul is a role card only when artifacts or enchantments are central; Return to Nature is for a resolved permanent or graveyard card that matters. Avoid over-sideboarding into narrow cards when the opponent is mostly stack interaction.
- Combo: Identify whether the opponent is faster, more fragile, or more interactive before spending permission. If their combo requires a visible permanent, preserve Annul, Return to Nature, Gleeful Sabotage, Echoing Truth, Resculpt, Imprisoned in the Moon, or Snap for that permanent instead of firing interaction at low-impact setup. If their combo is spell-based, value Dispel, Spell Pierce, Daze, Miscalculation, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, and Foil once the opponent reaches a plausible go-now turn. Relic of Progenitus is for graveyard combo, Annul and Return to Nature are for artifact or enchantment combo, and Hydroblast or Blue Elemental Blast only matter when red cards are actual engine pieces.
- Tempo: Protect the first mana advantage more than the first payoff. Tempo decks punish expensive Auras and commander tax, so avoid exposing Dawn's Reflection, Overgrowth, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Nature's Embrace, or Freed from the Real into open interaction unless the same turn can recoup mana or force a protected combo attempt. Use Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Cerulean Wisps, Dream's Grip, Twiddle, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Vitalize, Hidden Strings, Snap, and Dramatic Reversal to regain initiative when legal. Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Weather the Storm, and Annul are role cards according to the opponent's actual colors and permanents.
- Midrange: Convert repeated mana and cards into inevitability while avoiding one-for-one exhaustion. Gretchen Titchwillow is excellent when the opponent spends turns trading resources, because extra cards and land deployment pressure their removal density. Let Llanowar Visionary, Deep Analysis, Frantic Search, Lórien Revealed, Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, and Mystic Sanctuary rebuild after trades, then commit Krosan Restorer, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Voyaging Satyr, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Galvanic Alchemist, Oboro Breezecaller, Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, or Pili-Pala when you can extract mana immediately. Return to Nature answers sticky artifact or enchantment engines, Relic of Progenitus checks recursive value, and Spore Frog buys a decisive combat turn.
- Big mana: Race their top-end by building a protected high-mana turn before their haymakers dominate. The priority is enchanting a land, untapping it profitably, and using Gretchen Titchwillow or selection to find a payoff, not spending early turns on low-impact disruption. Counter or bounce only the spell or permanent that changes your clock, blocks your combo, or invalidates your board. Annul, Return to Nature, and Gleeful Sabotage are justified when their acceleration is artifact or enchantment based; Relic of Progenitus is only for a graveyard-supported big-mana plan.
- Graveyard: Treat graveyard decks as timing puzzles where the hate card must land before the graveyard becomes a protected resource. Relic of Progenitus and Return to Nature are role cards when public zones show recursion, flashback, reanimation, or graveyard-count payoffs. Use Relic of Progenitus carefully because Deep Analysis, Mystic Sanctuary, and graveyard-dependent recovery can be harmed by your own activation. Reduce emphasis on Evanescent Intellect if self-milling helps the opponent's axis more than yours.
- Artifact/enchantment: Answer engines by permanent type before defending generic value. Annul, Return to Nature, Gleeful Sabotage, and Serene Heart are role cards when the opponent's visible cards make those effects live. Keep Echoing Truth as a tempo answer to repeated names, tokens, or a temporary lock, but prefer destruction or exile when the permanent will immediately return to matter. Be Commander-family aware: if the opposing commander is the artifact, enchantment, Aura carrier, or engine piece, every answer should be timed around recasts and commander tax.
- Go-wide: Buy exactly the turns needed to assemble mana plus payoff, then stop spending cards on small tempo exchanges. Echoing Truth is strongest when multiple tokens or repeated names are visible; Spore Frog is strongest when one combat step decides survival; Scattershot Archer is strongest when the pressure is flying and small; Weather the Storm is strongest when the opponent chains multiple spells before damage matters. Reduce expensive card selection when you already have an engine piece but need a battlefield answer.
- Single-threat: Match the answer to the threat's role. Imprisoned in the Moon is the cleanest plan for a commander or single permanent that must remain neutralized, while Resculpt, Echoing Truth, Snap, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Miscalculation, Daze, and Spell Pierce should be chosen by timing, mana, and whether the threat is already resolved. Annul, Return to Nature, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, or Serene Heart are role cards only when the exact threat type or color makes them live. Reduce emphasis on broad anti-swarm tools.
- Burn: Preserve life total and protect the engine piece that lets you win before burn topdecks finish the game. Weather the Storm, Hydroblast, and Blue Elemental Blast are the sideboard cards that most directly change this matchup. Use Gretchen Titchwillow cautiously if commander mana competes with protection, but value her high toughness when it blocks small attackers. Reduce emphasis on Evanescent Intellect, Tolarian Winds, and slow expensive setup that does not change the life-total race.
- Removal-heavy: Force them to answer mana sources, untappers, commander, and payoff across different card types. Do not put all pressure on one creature when the hand can stage land Auras first; do not load Freed from the Real or Galvanic Alchemist onto a creature without protection unless waiting loses to the visible clock. Tamiyo's Safekeeping and Turn Aside are premium when they protect a specific permanent; Dispel, Spell Pierce, Miscalculation, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Foil, and Daze are premium when the removal is on the stack. Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast matter against red removal; Annul matters only against artifact, enchantment, or lock-piece interaction.
- General/archetype-only: Exact opposing decklists are absent, so treat these notes as matchup assumptions until public information proves otherwise. Revealed cards, commander identity, visible mana, graveyards, and rules-engine legal actions override every archetype label. Because this is a Commander-family deck, reassess sideboard value after each game based on how the opposing commander actually converted resources, not only on color identity.
- Red spell pressure: Protect life first, then combo. Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, and Weather the Storm are role cards when red damage, red removal, or spell-chain pressure is visible. Priority targets are lethal burn, removal aimed at Gretchen Titchwillow or a mana creature, and any red permanent that prevents the enchanted-land engine from surviving a turn cycle. Do not spend Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Miscalculation, Daze, Spell Pierce, Dispel, or Foil on low-impact red spells if the same mana must answer the spell that breaks up Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Krosan Restorer, or Viridian Longbow.
- Flying or token pressure: Stabilize the combat step before committing slow Auras. Scattershot Archer is the role card when small flyers are visible, Spore Frog when one attack step determines survival, and Weather the Storm when spell volume or burn reach makes life total the bottleneck. Echoing Truth lines become higher value when multiple visible objects share a name. Priority targets are evasive attackers that shorten the clock below your setup turn and board-wide pump or payoff effects that convert small creatures into lethal pressure.
- Artifact or enchantment engines: Answer the permanent type that actually matters. Annul, Return to Nature, Gleeful Sabotage, or Serene Heart are role cards only when public cards make them live; do not dilute the combo plan for speculative hate. Priority targets are artifacts or enchantments that stop activated abilities, tax spells, remove Auras, lock combat, or generate a faster engine than Gretchen Titchwillow plus enchanted land. Keep Imprisoned in the Moon, Resculpt, Snap, and Echoing Truth mapped to resolved problem permanents when legal.
- Aura commanders and Aura engines: Serene Heart can swing a game, but it can also destroy your own mana engine or Freed from the Real line. Use it when the opponent has committed more meaningful Auras than you or when your hand can rebuild after the exchange. If your best path is immediate combo through Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Sheltered Aerie, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Urban Utopia, Nature's Embrace, or Freed from the Real, prefer Annul, Return to Nature, Echoing Truth, Resculpt, or Imprisoned in the Moon unless Serene Heart is the only survival line.
- Graveyard plans: Use Relic of Progenitus only when the opponent's public graveyard, commander, or revealed cards show graveyard dependency. Priority targets are recursion pieces, flashback resources, reanimation setup, or graveyard-count payoffs. Account for your own Deep Analysis and Mystic Sanctuary before activating broad graveyard exile, because self-hate can reduce recovery after a failed combo turn. Return to Nature is a precise answer when one graveyard card is the real threat.
- Removal-heavy control: Present threats across card types and force inefficient answers. Prioritize protection for the permanent that currently converts mana into a win: Gretchen Titchwillow for cards, a land enchanted by Overgrowth or Dawn's Reflection for mana, or an untapper paired with Freed from the Real or Galvanic Alchemist for a combo turn. Hold Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Turn Aside, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Counterspell, and similar interaction for stack moments that preserve the decisive permanent. Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast upgrade this plan only when the removal is red.
- Big-mana or slow control: Race by assembling an advantaged mana turn before their top-end invalidates incremental play. Priority targets are accelerants or finishers that create a faster inevitability clock than your engine. Annul, Return to Nature, or Gleeful Sabotage are justified when their visible ramp is artifact or enchantment based; otherwise keep selection density high with Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Frantic Search, Lórien Revealed, Merchant Scroll, Drift of Phantasms, Vedalken Aethermage, and Step Through.
- Unknown opponents: Start from the maindeck engine unless the opposing commander, first-game public cards, or sideboard stage gives a clear reason to specialize. A single narrow answer can be correct when it maps to the commander, but broad sideboard swaps should wait for evidence. The deck's default strength is mana plus cards plus protection, and that identity should survive every legal sideboard configuration.
- Mana risk: The deck is powerful but color- and sequencing-sensitive, because early Forest or Island access must support auras, untappers, protection, and blue interaction. Avoid hands that rely on a single nonbasic, a single aura target, or Simic Growth Chamber without enough early action against pressure.
- Matchup risk: Fast evasive pressure and spell-based burn can end the game before Gretchen Titchwillow or an enchanted-land engine repays the setup cost. Weather the Storm, Spore Frog, Scattershot Archer, Hydroblast, and Blue Elemental Blast help only when the public matchup makes them live.
- Draw risk: Brainstorm, Ponder, Impulse, Frantic Search, Tolarian Winds, Deep Analysis, and Lórien Revealed can find missing pieces, but selection that does not affect the board can lose tempo. Under a short clock, prefer a legal stabilizer or protected combo commitment over digging for a better future line.
- Over-sideboarding risk: The deck needs a high density of mana enchantments, untappers, selection, and payoff access. Do not bring narrow sideboard cards just because the opponent's colors suggest them; require visible targets or a clear matchup axis.
- Graveyard risk: Relic of Progenitus can disrupt opponents but can also weaken Deep Analysis and Mystic Sanctuary recovery. Activate graveyard hate when the opponent's graveyard matters more than your own recovery plan.
- Sweeper/removal risk: Creature-based pieces such as Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Krosan Restorer, Oboro Breezecaller, Pili-Pala, Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, and Gretchen Titchwillow expose the engine to removal. Do not stack Freed from the Real or Galvanic Alchemist onto a creature unless the turn can produce value, protection is available, or waiting loses to the visible clock.
- Closer risk: Infinite or very large mana does not win by itself unless a legal payoff exists. Confirm access to Gretchen Titchwillow, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, Evanescent Intellect, or a deterministic board line before committing resources that cannot be rebuilt.
- Interaction risk: Countermagic is finite and can be stranded by wrong timing. Spend Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Miscalculation, Daze, Spell Pierce, Dispel, Foil, Turn Aside, and Tamiyo's Safekeeping on threats to survival, decisive engines, or the protected combo turn rather than generic value exchanges.
- Sequencing risk: Auras before protection, bounce lands before basic access, and draw before land-drop decisions can all create avoidable losses. Use legal actions and visible mana first, then decide whether selection, land deployment, commander activation, or combo commitment best preserves the next-turn line.
- Deciding factor: Record whether the game was decided by early mana development, commander access, a protected combo turn, combat pressure, interaction timing, or a failed closing plan. Name the exact visible cards involved, especially Gretchen Titchwillow, Freed from the Real, Galvanic Alchemist, Krosan Restorer, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, Evanescent Intellect, or Peregrine Drake.
- Mulligans: Note whether the opening hand had both colors, a functional land sequence, and an early plan before turn three. Flag keeps that depended on Simic Growth Chamber alone, had selection but no stable mana, had mana auras without a safe land, or had interaction without velocity.
- Mana: Track whether 13 Forest, 17 Island, Command Tower, Opal Palace, Darksteel Citadel, Mystic Sanctuary, and Simic Growth Chamber supported the actual spell mix. Record any game where Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, Fertile Ground, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Sheltered Aerie, Urban Utopia, Blighted Burgeoning, or Nature's Embrace was stranded, exposed, or decisive.
- Velocity: Identify whether Ponder, Brainstorm, Impulse, Frantic Search, Tolarian Winds, Deep Analysis, Lórien Revealed, Merchant Scroll, Drift of Phantasms, Vedalken Aethermage, Step Through, or Gretchen Titchwillow found the missing role on time. Separate good digging from selection that spent a turn without improving survival.
- Engine: Record which engine actually mattered: enchanted land plus untapper, High Tide plus untaps, Gretchen Titchwillow card flow, Peregrine Drake mana, Cloud of Faeries tempo, or a creature-aura loop. Note whether protection was available before committing Freed from the Real or Galvanic Alchemist.
- Removal and counters: Mark each Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Miscalculation, Daze, Spell Pierce, Dispel, Foil, Turn Aside, Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, and Imprisoned in the Moon as survival, engine protection, tempo, or low-impact. Flag every pass where visible interaction could have protected the decisive permanent.
- Combat: Record whether Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Krosan Restorer, Oboro Breezecaller, Pili-Pala, Cloud of Faeries, Peregrine Drake, Llanowar Visionary, Drift of Phantasms, or Gretchen Titchwillow needed to block instead of preserve engine value.
- Sideboard: Evaluate whether Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Annul, Return to Nature, Weather the Storm, Scattershot Archer, Spore Frog, Relic of Progenitus, Gleeful Sabotage, or Serene Heart had legal and relevant targets. Flag narrow cards that were drawn without public matchup proof.
- Closing: Record whether large mana converted into a win through Gretchen Titchwillow, Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, Evanescent Intellect, or combat. Flag games where the deck made mana but had no legal payoff.
- Role and mistakes: State whether the pilot should have acted as combo, control, or survival deck after the first three turns. List stranded cards, overperformers, underperformers, missed land-drop sequencing, premature aura commitment, and any legal-action mismatch between the guide and Forge output.
- Mana balance: If blue interaction or selection is stranded, should the 13 Forest / 17 Island split move toward more blue, or did the loss come from keeping hands without Command Tower, Urban Utopia, Fertile Ground, or other fixing? If green setup is stranded, ask the reverse before changing spell roles.
- Aura density: If enchanted-land engines fail to assemble, does the deck need more effects in the role of Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Overgrowth, Dawn's Reflection, Market Festival, Glittering Frost, Grafted Growth, Sheltered Aerie, Blighted Burgeoning, Nature's Embrace, or Fertile Ground? If aura targets die or get bounced too often, should emphasis shift toward High Tide, Peregrine Drake, Cloud of Faeries, and Gretchen Titchwillow instead?
- Untapper density: If mana engines lack a creature or spell to reuse lands, should the role currently held by Arbor Elf, Voyaging Satyr, Stone-Seeder Hierophant, Krosan Restorer, Vizier of Tumbling Sands, Twiddle, Dream's Grip, Tidal Bore, Emerald Charm, Hidden Strings, Vitalize, Dramatic Reversal, and Cerulean Wisps gain redundancy?
- Protection mix: If combo turns lose to removal, should the protection/counter suite emphasize Turn Aside, Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Dispel, Spell Pierce, Counterspell, Arcane Denial, Negate, Miscalculation, Daze, and Foil differently? If counters sit unused against creature boards, should more sideboard or main-deck emphasis move toward battlefield answers.
- Aggro plan: If fast pressure beats setup, are Weather the Storm, Spore Frog, Scattershot Archer, Echoing Truth, Snap, Resculpt, and Imprisoned in the Moon enough to bridge to the engine? If not, identify whether the failure was life total, blockers, flying pressure, or losing tempo to selection.
- Control plan: If removal-heavy opponents break up every creature engine, should the deck lean harder on Gretchen Titchwillow, Deep Analysis, Mystic Sanctuary, Lórien Revealed, Merchant Scroll, and protected land enchantments rather than fragile creature commitments?
- Closers: If games stall after large mana, should the deck increase access to Viridian Longbow, Wildheart Invoker, Evanescent Intellect, or other legal payoff roles? Record whether the issue was payoff absence, payoff removal, summoning sickness, or failure to leave mana after setup.
- Sideboard slots: If Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Annul, Return to Nature, Relic of Progenitus, Gleeful Sabotage, or Serene Heart lack targets across testing, which matchup axis actually needs help? If Weather the Storm, Scattershot Archer, or Spore Frog overperform, ask whether the maindeck survival plan is too thin.
- Role conflict: If the pilot loses while holding both combo pieces and counters, decide whether the matchup asks for earlier commitment or longer control. Use visible clock, known opposing interaction, commander tax, and available protection to separate bad strategy from bad sequencing.
Runtime cues: prompt:mulligan; opening hand; commander available
Use when: deciding keep or mulligan before the first turn.
Avoid when: the rules engine presents only mandatory keep-like choices.
Instructions: Keep hands with two functional mana sources or one land plus selection and a one-mana accelerator, with access to both blue and green by turn three. Reject hands that have only payoff pieces, only counters, or an aura with no safe land to enchant.
Phase windows: main phase before combat; main phase after combat
Runtime cues: action:cast; action:play land; visible mana development
Use when: selecting the first setup play in turns one through three.
Avoid when: visible pressure requires immediate interaction or a counter must be held for a known opposing threat.
Instructions: Establish a mana creature, land aura, or Arcane Signet before spending mana on slow selection unless the hand lacks a second land or a required color. Prefer setup that leaves next turn's Gretchen Titchwillow or protection line legal.
Phase windows: main phase before combat; main phase after combat
Runtime cues: action:cast aura; action:target land
Use when: committing an aura to a land that may become the combo mana source.
Avoid when: the enchanted land would be the only land, the opponent has visible bounce or land destruction pressure, or no untapper/payoff is present and waiting does not cost a turn.
Instructions: Put high-output auras on lands that untappers can legally reuse, especially basics or stable dual sources. Treat Simic Growth Chamber as powerful but fragile; require a reason before stacking the whole plan on it.
Phase windows: main phase before combat; main phase after combat; opponent end step
Runtime cues: action:cast Freed from the Real; action:cast Galvanic Alchemist; action:activate
Use when: deciding whether to start a loop, tap out, or expose the key creature.
Avoid when: visible interaction or open mana makes the engine likely to fail and the hand has a safer draw-control line.
Instructions: Commit when the line creates decisive mana, lethal damage, milling, or enough Gretchen Titchwillow activations to dominate before the opponent untaps. Wait when protection is absent and the board clock permits patience.

### Policy: Deterministic Self Target For Untap Aura
Priority: Low
Decision families: selection; mana
Cards: Freed from the Real; Galvanic Alchemist; Krosan Restorer; Voyaging Satyr; Arbor Elf; Stone-Seeder Hierophant; Pili-Pala
Phase windows: main phase before combat; main phase after combat
Runtime cues: action:target self Freed from the Real; action:target self Galvanic Alchemist
Use when: the combo gate has already selected the line and the only legal target matching the action text is the visible friendly untapper named in the current plan.
Avoid when: multiple friendly target creatures are legal and the current plan does not name the exact target.
Instructions: Choose the target creature already identified by the combo line. Do not retarget to a different creature for speculative value.
Use when: deciding whether to convert Islands and untaps into a burst turn.
Avoid when: Island count is low, payoff is absent, or the opponent can force the turn to fizzle through visible stack interaction.
Instructions: Start High Tide turns when untap spells and Islands produce a material mana gain and a payoff or draw chain is legal. Preserve one interaction spell when the payoff depends on a permanent surviving.

### Policy: Gretchen Card-Flow Activation
Priority: Medium
Decision families: mana; priority; selection
Cards: Gretchen Titchwillow
Phase windows: opponent end step; main phase after combat; main phase before combat
Use when: Gretchen Titchwillow activation is legal and mana can be spent on card flow or land placement.
Avoid when: activating consumes mana needed for a counter, protection spell, combat survival, or a same-turn engine commitment.
Instructions: Use Gretchen Titchwillow mainly at opponent end step or after essential plays. Main-phase activate only when the extra land placement changes the current turn or the hand needs immediate velocity.
Use when: an opposing spell or ability threatens the engine, a payoff, lethal survival, or a decisive resource swing.
Avoid when: the target is low impact, can be answered later, or spending permission opens the combo permanent to a known larger threat.
Instructions: Counter removal aimed at the active engine before countering generic card advantage. Use Turn Aside and Tamiyo's Safekeeping for targeted disruption, not for minor tempo unless survival requires it.

### Policy: Bounce And Removal Timing
Priority: Medium
Decision families: interaction; priority; combat
Cards: Echoing Truth; Snap; Resculpt; Imprisoned in the Moon
Phase windows: main phase; combat; stack interaction; opponent end step
Runtime cues: action:cast Echoing Truth; action:cast Snap; action:cast Resculpt; action:cast Imprisoned in the Moon
Use when: a visible permanent blocks the combo, creates lethal pressure, or must be removed before a payoff resolves.
Avoid when: the answer would trade down against a token or temporary threat while a higher-impact permanent is visible.
Instructions: Prefer tempo bounce during combo turns and durable answers for commanders or repeat engines. Use Snap as both interaction and mana generation only when the untapped lands are relevant.
Use when: choosing what role to find or whether to spend mana on selection.
Avoid when: the current board requires immediate survival or the selection line sacrifices a land without a clear legal payoff.
Instructions: Search first for missing mana, then missing untapper, then protection, then payoff. Merchant Scroll should prioritize the instant role required now; transmute and wizardcycling require light-model role judgment.

### Policy: Mandatory Exact Mana Payment
Priority: Low
Decision families: mana
Cards: none
Phase windows: any payment prompt
Runtime cues: action:pay; action:choose mana
Use when: the engine presents exactly one legal payment action and it pays the spell or ability already selected.
Avoid when: multiple payments differ by leaving different colors, tapping an engine land, or spending floating mana needed for a pending tax.
Instructions: Select the only legal payment for the chosen action. Preserve manual reasoning whenever payment choices change future blue interaction or green untap access.
Use when: the Longbow activation line has already been selected and the legal action text targets the opponent directly.
Avoid when: a visible creature must be removed first to prevent lethal damage or protect the loop.
Instructions: Target the opponent for deterministic closing only after the pilot has committed to damage as the win path. Use light-model for creature-versus-player target judgment.
Use when: the mill activation line has already been selected and the legal action text targets the opponent.
Avoid when: the opponent library is not the selected win axis or a creature target choice for the Aura is still unresolved.
Instructions: Target the opponent with the granted mill ability during a committed mill line. Do not choose self-targeting unless the engine request explicitly identifies a legal self-mill purpose.
Use when: deciding attacks, blocks, or whether to expose engine bodies.
Avoid when: exactly one legal no-block or mandatory block action is presented.
Instructions: Preserve untappers and commander access unless blocking prevents lethal or protects a more important engine. Attack only when damage matters and the creature is not needed for mana, defense, or combo material before the next untap.

### Policy: Sideboard Evidence Gate
Priority: High
Decision families: sideboard; pregame
Cards: Hydroblast; Blue Elemental Blast; Annul; Return to Nature; Weather the Storm; Scattershot Archer; Spore Frog; Relic of Progenitus; Gleeful Sabotage; Serene Heart
Phase windows: sideboarding; pregame after game one; pregame after game two
Runtime cues: prompt:sideboard; match stage; opponent commander; opponent public archetype; revealed permanents; graveyard contents
Use when: selecting a legal 10-card sideboard adjustment for the next game.
Avoid when: matchup evidence is unknown, the opponent's public cards do not match the Sideboard Map plan, or the change would remove both setup density and protection density.
Instructions: Choose only sideboard cards with visible matchup relevance, and remove only registered main-deck cards named in the corresponding plan. Prefer the smallest plan that answers the confirmed axis while preserving land enchantments, untappers, selection, permission, and at least one payoff path.

### Policy: Sideboard Lock Legality
Priority: High
Decision families: sideboard; validation; pregame
Cards: Hydroblast; Blue Elemental Blast; Annul; Return to Nature; Weather the Storm; Scattershot Archer; Spore Frog; Relic of Progenitus; Gleeful Sabotage; Serene Heart
Phase windows: sideboarding; match lock; pregame after game one; pregame after game two
Runtime cues: prompt:submit sideboard; sideboard validation; registered 100 plus 10; generated swap plan
Use when: submitting a final sideboard plan to Veles for the next game.
Avoid when: any proposed incoming card is absent from the registered sideboard, any proposed outgoing card is absent from the registered main deck, quantities fail to preserve the registered 110 cards, or the reason relies on hidden cards not shown to the player.
Instructions: Verify every incoming name is one of Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Annul, Return to Nature, Weather the Storm, Scattershot Archer, Spore Frog, Relic of Progenitus, Gleeful Sabotage, or Serene Heart. Verify every outgoing name is an exact main-deck card name. Reject placeholder names and speculative broad plans.
Cards: Hydroblast; Blue Elemental Blast; Annul; Return to Nature; Weather the Storm; Scattershot Archer; Spore Frog; Relic of Progenitus; Gleeful Sabotage; Serene Heart
Phase windows: main phase; combat; opponent turn; stack interaction; end step
Runtime cues: action:cast Hydroblast; action:cast Blue Elemental Blast; action:cast Annul; action:cast Return to Nature; action:cast Weather the Storm; action:activate Relic of Progenitus; action:cast Spore Frog; action:activate Scattershot Archer; action:cast Gleeful Sabotage; action:cast Serene Heart
Use when: a boarded card has a legal target or survival function matching public information.
Avoid when: firing the card would miss the confirmed matchup axis, consume mana needed for a protected combo turn, or harm your own Aura or graveyard plan more than the opponent's plan.
Instructions: Use Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast on red threats or stack fights; Annul, Return to Nature, Gleeful Sabotage, and Serene Heart on confirmed artifact or enchantment pressure; Relic of Progenitus before recursion becomes decisive; Spore Frog, Scattershot Archer, and Weather the Storm only when the combat or life-total window is real.
